DUBAi’S 2020 ViSiOn Dubai has set itself the ambitious goal of welcoming some 20 million passengers to our desert shores in less than eight years’ time. The year of the target, 2020, is the same year that the emirate is expecting to host the World Expo. The ambitious goal has been set by the Dubai’s target-driven visionary leader, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. Over 10 million visitors already come to the emirate annually, but additional aviation and naval cruise facilities are making it possible for more and more people to work, rest and play here. A number of new touristic initiatives are expected to play a major role in doubling tourist numbers. Dubai’s key role not only as a holiday destination but also as an events, sporting, educational, financial and medical hub in the Middle East is expected to play a major part in increasing the footfall into the city and beyond. Among the new tourist’s attractions will be the long-awaited 396-hectare Dubai Safari Park which is under construction in the Al Aweer area. The safari park will feature Arabian, African and Asian Villages, created specifically for animals native to those geographical areas. Visitors will also be able to enjoy an open safari experience and visit the Butterfly Park. Being built at a cost of Dhs150 million, the park is scheduled to open in 2014. Located in the popular Zabeel Park, the 150-metre-high Dubai Frame, which has been designed to resemble an enormous picture frame, will offer magnificent views of all aspects of Dubai including Deira, the Creek, Jumeira and beyond. The Dhs120 million Dubai Frame will also house a museum dedicated to the history and development of the city that is now home to some two million residents from all over the world. Property tycoon Donald Trump recently inked a mega deal with Dubai’s leading property developer Damac which will result in the world’s first Trump Golf Course. To be located in the heart of Dubailand, the new 18-hole Championship golf course will be surrounded by a new development of designer villas and other sports facilities. Meanwhile, Dubai’s World Expo 2020 bid is extremely fortunate to have the backing of former US President Bill Clinton, the UK’s Foreign Secretary William Hague and London’s flamboyant mayor, Boris Johnson. DUBAI DUTY FREE’S IRISH DERBY FESTIVAL The Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Irish Derby is regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest international race weekends. A winning combination of the world’s finest Thoroughbreds competing for Irish sport’s ultimate prize and the best of fashion and entertainment, the event is much-awaited on both racing and social calendars. The DDF Irish Derby is the centrepiece of the three-day festival which runs from 28 to 30 June at The Curragh. This year, the DDF Irish Derby race will take place on 29 June. The contest, with a purse of €1.25 million, will feature an eight race programme. This year marks the sixth year of DDF’s sponsorship of the festival, and the world’s leading airport retailer will once again sponsor the prestigious 'Most Stylish Lady' competition, in association with luxury jeweller Boodles. DDF started its sponsorship of The Anglesey Stakes on Darley Oaks Day in 2003. As part of the sponsorship deal, the Curragh set about creating a Dubai-themed day at the track and DDF was joined by a host of other Dubai-based companies, including Emirates, the Jumeirah Group and the Dubai Racing Club, with the aim of giving race-goers an opportunity to see and learn more about Dubai. DDF later took over the title sponsorship of the Irish Derby. In 2008, it was announced that DDF had agreed to sponsor the race until 2012 which marked the 143rd running of the race and DDF’s last year of sponsorship. Last year DDF renewed its sponsorship of the Irish Derby until 2015, which will mark the 150th running of the great race. Over the years DDF’s sponsorship has become much more than simply supporting one race - albeit one of the biggest in Europe. The DDF Irish Derby is now a complete festival with three days of racing events. Other ancillary events that DDF runs and supports include The DDF Irish Derby Golf Classic and the DDF Irish Derby Summer Ball with proceeds going to charity. The DDF Irish Derby will run on 29 June, when the eyes of the world will be drawn to the Curragh Racecourse to see the world’s top Thoroughbreds battle on the turf for Derby glory.

HAYA AT THE HELM HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, president of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and wife of HH Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, will chair the new board of the Dubai Equestrian Club. The Club’s role will include setting standards and regulations for the licensing of equestrian facilities in the UAE and to cater for the growing interest of the sport locally and internationally. Princess Haya, a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2007, has a long standing connection with the equestrian world: in 2000 she was the first Arab woman to compete in the Olympics when she competed in the show jumping event in Sydney. In 2007 she was elected president of the FEI for a four-year term and was re-elected to a second term in 2010.

ALL HANDS ON DECK True North is a 21-metre yacht that is currently circling the globe, taking the city’s Expo 2020 bid across the seven seas. Since it submitted its proposal to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris in 2011 as host for the World Expo 2020, Dubai has emerged as one of the top candidates. With former US President Bill Clinton and Mayor of London Boris Johnson declaring their support for Dubai, the emirate’s Expo 2020 campaign is now stronger than ever. Perhaps the most interesting component of the UAE’s campaign is the 21-metre yacht True North which is circumnavigating the globe in an effort to spread the unifying message behind the country’s bid. The ship is named after the Arabic Najmet al-Shamal, the North Star that acts as a crucial guide for ships and nomads in the desert. Commenting on True North’s journey to share the UAE’s Expo vision around the world, Reem Al Hashemyi, UAE Minister of State, in her capacity as Managing Director of the Higher Committee for Hosting the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, said: “Given the UAE’s proximity to the sea, sailing plays a proud part in our heritage. True North’s voyage reflects the UAE’s Expo bid theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ by taking the Expo messages of unity and innovation to her ports-of-call across the globe.” Having started its voyage in Europe, True North connects with communities in each port, giving people of all ages a chance to share their own experiences of how the Dubai Expo theme and subthemes resonate with them locally and impact their daily lives. Bahamas National Trust and the Government of The Bahamas' multi-year project aimed at developing a sustainable land use plan for the Exumas, a district of the Bahamas consisting of over 360 islands. Dubai’s theme for Expo 2020 is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. Dubai Expo 2020 will inspire the partnerships required to meet the world’s changing needs. The three issues that will form the subthemes for Dubai’s Expo 2020 bid are Sustainability: Intelligent Sources of Energy and Water; Mobility: New Systems of Logistics and Transportation; and Opportunity: New Paths to Economic Development. Dubai is competing against four other candidate cities (Izmir, Turkey; Ayutthaya, Thailand; Yekaterinburg, Russia; and Sao Paulo, Brazil) bidding to host the World Expo 2020. Soak up the atmoSphere If you’re a fan of the Oscars, a trip to the Kodak Theatre, which forms part of the Hollywood & Highland Centre, is a must-do. You can follow the pavement stars and look at the handprints of Johnny Depp, Matt Damon and Nicolas Cage among others. The Grauman Chinese Theatre is also there but not worth the entrance fee. Much better is to soak up the atmosphere and then head to the observation decks on the third and fourth floor from where you’ll have the perfect view and photo op for the iconic Hollywood sign on Mount Lee.

Santa moniCa No visit to LA would be complete without a visit to Santa Monica and Venice Beach. If you want to sample some of the laid-back vibe and lattes for which the city is known, then the historic Santa Monica Pier is a good starting point. Yes, Rodeo Drive has designer labels, but many more American stores are found in the latter shopping malls. Check J Crew, Cole Haan and Brooks Brothers for accessories and clothing with Preppie credentials.

Spa daY You’ll quickly realise that the LA look is high maintenance, especially for women. If you want to treat yourself to a spa session, then checking in at Ole Henriksen's, just off Sunset Boulevard, for a facial is highly recommended. He only has one spa in the US and his products have achieved cult status with beauty editors and fans alike. Seventies pop-group Abba, one of Sweden’s top exports, best-known for their hit singles ‘Waterloo’, ‘Mama Mia’ and ‘Dancing Queen’, are being celebrated with the opening of the Abba Museum in Stockholm. With sales of over 378 million albums around the world, Abba are widely recognised as Sweden’s most successful band of all time. Despite disbanding in 1983, the group enjoys a cult following of fans old and new who appreciate their chirpy, easy to sing along to music. The hit musical ‘Mamma Mia!’, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of Abba, and starring Meryl Streep, successfully revived interest in the band and introduced their music to another generation of pop music enthusiasts. The Abba Museum, located in the scenic Djurgarden in the Swedish capital, offers fans of the 1974 Eurovision Contest winners an interactive journey into the lives of Agnetha, Benny, Björn and Frida, allowing them to temporarily step into the shoes of the successful musicians. They can play the piano with Benny, dress up like Agnetha, mix music and more… The exhibition has been curated by Ingmarie Halling, the band’s former stylist and curator of the successful Abba World exhibition in London’s Earls Court, who spent two years on this project. ravelling through Dubai International’s Terminal 2 just got a lot more relaxing and hassle-free thanks to the major expansion and refurbishment work the terminal has been undergoing. Passengers can now look forward to wider terminal space, enhanced Dubai Duty Free and dining experiences as well as a welcoming retreat to new lounges, with the opening in April of the first phase of the development. 2012 was a record year for Dubai International’s Terminal 2; 6.2 million passengers travelled through it, up 11 per cent of 2011. To accommodate this surge in passenger numbers over the past few years, it is being expanded to accommodate 10 million passengers a year once the refurbishment has been completed next year. While Terminal 2 (T2) was opened in 1998 to alleviate congestion at Terminal 1 and cater to scheduled and charter flights from the CIS

region, Iran and South East Asia, it soon became the hub of Dubai’s budget airline, flydubai. At the moment the low-cost carrier, whose operational network covers the Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe, accounts for around 80 per cent of the total passengers at Terminal 2. The airline is also seeking to more than double its fleet of aircraft this year. Similarly, India’s low-cost carrier Air India Express has also added new flights and destinations to and from Dubai in the past year. At present more than 30 airlines, including African Express Airways, Iran Asseman Airlines, Iraqi Airways, Ariana Afghan Airlines, Kish Air, Qeshm Air and Jubba Airways LTD, operate out of this terminal. As part of an overall strategy to cater for the growth of the budget carriers and the booming tourism sector in general, Dubai Airports launched a phased expansion plan of Terminal 2.

The expansion of Terminal 2 forms part of Dubai Airports $7.8bn SP2020 airport and airspace expansion programme which will boost capacity at Dubai International to 90 million passengers per year by 2018. After many successful passenger and baggage handling trials, phase one of the expansion was successfully opened. With the provision of an enhanced passenger experience at its core, this phase saw the construction of a new departures area and the addition of five new boarding gates, as well as a new Marhaba Lounge at Terminal 2. T2â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marhaba Lounge features its own kitchen, separate dining facility and a fully equipped business centre, as well as a bar. The number of check-in counters at the new Departure area has increased from 38 to 52 including four counters for over-sized baggage and twelve self-check-in kiosks. An important aspect of the Phase One expansion at the Departures area is the introduction of a new baggage sortation system which eliminated the need for baggage screening before check-in. Passengers are now able to checkin their baggage at any counter instead of airline-specific counters only. The baggage handling system at Terminal 2â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Arrivals area was also modified to an in-line screening system which means that all bags are now security checked prior to reaching the baggage claim area - eliminating the need for a security check after passengers have claimed their bags.

Phase Two of the expansion plan will see a refurbishment of the existing Departures area to create five more boarding gates, bringing the total number of gates to 12. During Phase Three, the current boarding area will be refurbished, increasing the size of current arrival area and doubles the number of baggage reclaim carousels to six. Phases Two and Three are expected to be completed by the end of 2013 and mid- 2014 respectively. It is evident that Terminal 2 is playing a key role in enhancing passenger traffic at Dubai International which aims to overtake London to become the world's busiest international hub by 2015. RUNWAY UPGRADE AHEAD FOR DUBAI AIRPORTS dubai airports recently announced plans to conduct an extensive runway enhancement project at dubai international (dXb) during an 80-day period commencing 1 May 2014. during this period, scheduled passenger flights will be reduced and all freighter, charter and general aviation flights will be diverted to dubai World Central (dWC). The airport’s northern runway is nearing the end of its design life and requires modifications such as resurfacing and a runway lighting upgrade, as well as the construction of new taxiways on the southern runway to boost capacity. While runway resurfacing is a common occurrence with

airports around the world, dubai international’s 24/7 operation makes the runway closure more complex and one that must be meticulously planned. dubai airports already closes each runway at dubai international for five hours per week to conduct regular maintenance but the size and scope of the programme will require each runway to be closed for extended periods of time - almost three months. “Safety and service are our two top priorities,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of dubai airports. “While we regret any inconvenience caused to our airline customers and our passengers, these upgrades are necessary to heighten safety, boost capacity and quite literally pave the way for future expansion.”

DUBAI IS THE WORLD’S LEADING A380 HUB it’s on record now – dubai international is the world’s leading hub for a380 operations. DUBAI WORLD CENTRAL SEES RISE IN CARGO VOLUMES dubai World Central (dWC) reported a 7.8% increase in cargo volumes in the first quarter of 2013. according to a traffic report issued by dubai airports, the airport handled a total of 53,974 tonnes of freight in the first three months this year, a year-on-year increase of 7.8 per cent compared to 50,062 tonnes that was handled during the same period in 2012. air traffic movements at the airport rose 16.8 per cent to 4,104 in the first three months of 2013 compared to 3,513 movements during the first quarter of 2012. dWC is aiming to start passenger operations later this year, “Maintaining triple digit air freight traffic expansion is a difficult task… even in dubai,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of dubai airports. “The next step in the evolution of the airport will see continued cargo traffic growth, the commencement of passenger operations slated for 27 October with launch carriers Wizz air and nasair, and the hosting of its first ever dubai airshow from 17 November. all will play a role in building our new airport’s growing brand reputation,” he added.

GLOBAL AIRPORT LEADERS FORUM HH Sheikh ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, chairman of dubai airports and President of the dubai Civil aviation authority has called for global aviation regulators and civil aviation authorities to explore best practices and collaborate on the establishment of clear legislative frameworks, policy priorities, transparent governance systems and effective funding strategies to accommodate the growth in the region to 400 million passengers by 2020. Sheikh ahmed was addressing delegates attending the two-day Global airport Leaders’s Forum (GaLF) was held for the first time this year. With over 35 experts and thoughtleaders from airports, airlines and other organisations sharing their insights on industry issues and travel trends, GaLF emerged as an ideal platform where experts shared ideas, discussed future trends and needs and presented innovative solutions to issues of common interest. in his keynote address, he said that the coming together of great minds often gives birth to wonderful ideas and valuable solutions that benefit everyone. Referring to a study conducted by Oxford Economics in 2011, Sheikh ahmed said that aviation industry supports over 250,000 jobs and contributes over uS$22 billion to dubai’s economy, representing around 19 per cent of total employment and 28 per cent of the emirate’s GdP. He added: “This is the basis of our continued investment in airport infrastructure. Currently we have committed uS$8 billion for the ongoing expansion of dubai international. We are confident that investment will pay huge dividends. in fact by 2020 aviation’s contribution to our economy will grow to uS$44.5 billion and 372,900 jobs.” Sheikh ahmed said that industry leaders must leverage new technologies, find ways to tap into renewable sources of energy

Famous for his elegant, ethereal gowns, couturier elie Saab’s first foray into the world of scent has already caused a sensation. His Eau de Parfum Intense was created by Francis Kurkdjian whose trademark is musky florals. The Penfolds Ampoule was created to celebrate the 2004 Kalimna Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon, which received praise from global wine critics and in 2011 was awarded the highest accolade of 100 points by renowned u.S. wine critic james Suckling. The Penfolds Ampoule is not only a work of wine art - it also provides a truly memorable experience. When a decision is made to open the ampoule a member of the Penfolds Winemaking team will personally attend a special opening ceremony for the owner. The winemaker will travel to the destination of choice, where the ampoule will be ceremoniously removed from its glass plumb-bob casing and opened using a specially designed, tungsten-tipped, sterling silver scribe-snap. The winemaker will then prepare the wine using a beautifully crafted sterling silver tastevin. For the lucky owner, this is a private and very luxurious wine master class, made available by DDF.

Where are you more at home, London or Dubai? Though we have a home in London, I spend most of my time in Dubai now which I consider my home.

Dubai boasts a vibrant food scene. what do you think is missing? Persian haute cuisine of course! And Japanese home cooking, Mexican regional food and great-tasting organic healthy Californian cuisine.

Do you plan to open your restaurant in Dubai soon? I've been approached on many occasions and even though I run away from the idea (as the long hours will take me away from my family) I may be tempted once my son is old enough. It's also in my blood as my father was a well-known restaurateur. I love making people happy through food and watching them enjoy themselves, which for me is what a restaurant is all about.

If you had to cook a special meal for your family, what would you serve? Zereshk Polo - it's comforting, delicate tender chicken in saffron and onion jus, fluffy rice and studded with sweet and sour barberries. The most satisfying and easy-to-prepare food in the world.

Your favourite recipe from Pomegranates and Roses? I often get asked that but how could a foodie answer a question like that? I'm a food-obsessed individual; I think, sleep and breathe food!

Which was the most challenging menu you’ve had to create for a celebrity? Dairy-free and gluten-free desserts which led me to write my first cookbook, Sweet Alternative: desserts without gluten, dairy or soy.

One celebrity you would like to cook for?

How do you explore a new city? Food markets are the first places I go to and also supermarkets. I spend more than half my time there and the rest with my head deep into hotel and restaurant menus.

What are your travel must-haves? My big cashmere shawl, my colloidal silver spray and my Frownies (small sticky papers which you put on your forehead so as not to frown at night).

Do you travel light? I'd like to think I do but my husband thinks otherwise!

How do you overcome jetlag? Lots of freshly pressed green organic juice: parsley, celery wheatgrass, cucumber, a little apple and ginger and cool refreshing coconut juice. These two work wonders.

Your favourite restaurant in Dubai?

Kashan, a jewel of a city, renowned for its architecture, silk carpets and production of the most incredible smelling rose water in the world.

You never leave home without?

One basic cooking technique that every cook should know? That saffron is best ground and diluted in a little hot water before being added to food. This way the stems or strings release their true flavour and go a long way. Also, always add saffron to dishes 10 minutes before the end of the cooking time so that the aroma doesn't evaporate.

One ingredient that you cannot do without? Persian rose water from Rabee, the only brand that truly captures the smell of Persian roses. I use it in cordials, in desserts, in savoury dishes, on my pillow in hotel rooms and even as a tonic for my face. It's not overpowering at all and has so many health benefits.

The most versatile ingredient in your opinion? Rabee rose water again! I use it in so many of my ingredients in my book, from sweet to savoury dishes! dv
