The results are in: for the second year in a row, DXB took home the coveted Best Airport in the Middle East award at the annual ACI Airport Service Quality Awards. Now Dubai Airports is gearing up for its role as Emirati Writers Sponsor at the upcoming Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. The year began on a strong note with over 4.85 million passengers travelling through DXB in January. And there’s plenty more where that came from: according to the latest forecast by international industry consultant Business Monitor International, the number of tourists heading to the UAE this year is expected to hit nearly nine million... a whopping nine percent increase on the 8.2 million that flocked to our shores to shop, swim and stuff their faces in 2011. So just how is the UAE gearing up to welcome a slice of the world? Slated for the months ahead is the opening of the new Fujairah City Centre, the expansion of The Dubai Mall and the completion of the 16.4-hectare Waterpark on Yas Island… not to mention, an exciting host of world-class sporting events, cultural festivals, art exhibitions, theatre productions, restaurant openings and concerts galore. But no date was scribbled quite as frantically into our already-crowded schedules like June 3, when the Material Girl herself will perform at what promises to be the UAE’s biggest gig of the year. International Women’s Day
World Consumer Rights Day
World Water Day
I Am In Control Day
Marked across the world, IWD is an annual event that reflects on the past struggles of women, celebrates their accomplishments and looks ahead to the opportunities that await future generations. This year’s theme is Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures. The idea behind IWD was proposed by Clara Zetkin, the leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, at the second International Conference of Working Women in 1910. It received unanimous approval from over 100 women representing 17 countries. The very first IWD was held the following year with meetings, rallies and protests campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained and hold public office.
Held annually, WCRD is used as a means of building solidarity within the international consumer movement and raising global awareness about consumer rights. Consumer organisations worldwide use campaigns, press conferences, exhibitions, workshops and street events to observe the occasion by demanding that basic rights are respected and protesting the social injustices that undermine them. The theme for 2012 is Our Money, Our Rights: Campaigning For Real Choice In Financial Services. WCRD traces its origins to March 15,1963, when President Kennedy gave an address to the US congress on the issue of consumer rights, becoming the first world leader to do so.
Water is a basic requirement for all life, yet many countries are rapidly reaching conditions of water scarcity. Studies state that one out of every eight people lacks safe drinking water, while only $1 invested in water and sanitation improvements returns roughly $8 in increased economic productivity and averted healthcare costs. To draw attention to the importance of freshwater and advocate for its sustainable management, the UN General Assembly declared March 22 as the first WWD in 1993. The 2012 theme is Water and Food Security: The World Is Thirsty Because We Are Hungry to call for actions to better manage the 2-4 litres each of us consumes daily, most of which is embedded in the food we eat.
You’re late for a meeting, the phone is ringing off the hook, you’ve just spilt your coffee… and your day has only just started. Pull it together by taking a cue from the infamous Alexander Haig. On March 30, 1981, President Reagan was wounded in an assassination attempt and plenty of confusion prevailed. Then Secretary of State Haig was taken a little out of context when he said: "I am in control here." Instead of taking his entire statement into account, the press focused on these few words. Political uproar ensued, eventually leading to his resignation. Since then, this day has continued and evolved. Today, it is a chance to fight feeling scatter-brained, get your affairs in order and regain control!

H
orseracing’s richest day, the most highly anticipated event on Dubai’s social calendar or simply a competitive sporting event not to be missed… regardless of how you view the Dubai World Cup, it’s unlikely that the memory of last year’s race has faded away. The $21.5 million spectacle showcased not just an international field of the best in racing, but also provided tremendous thrills to spectators around the world as Japan’s Victoire Pisa romped to victory. Trained by Katsuhiko Sumii, the four-year-old colt won the 2,000-metre event by a half-length and was timed in 2:05.94. As the country was still in the throes of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, the emotional win offered a bright spot to briefly temper the tragedy in some minor way. The subsequent scenes in the parade ring at the Meydan Racecourse will remain momentous in the event’s history. Fans were in tears as Japan’s national anthem played, while winning owner Yoshimi Ichikawa and jockey Mirco Demuro dedicated their win to the people of Japan during a poignant prize ceremony. The 17th running of the Dubai World Cup on March 31 promises to be yet another unforgettable affair as the prospect of the world's largest purse – a staggering $10 million – will inject the whole affair with the kind of highly-charged excitement that always accompanies the biggest stakes available. The race is classified as a Group One Flat Race for four-year-old thoroughbreds and above, and spans a distance of 2,000 metres (one mile, two furlongs). Previously run on dirt, it is now contested on an all-weather surface. Chief supporting races are the $5 million Dubai Duty Free and the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic – the two richest races run on turf, anywhere in the world. New to the World Cup card this year is the addition of the newly renamed Dubai Gold Cup, a move that will increase the race card to nine events, and overall prize money to $27.25 million. It will join as a 3,200-metre, Group Three turf event with a purse of $1 million. This latest addition to the highly competitive card completes the programme’s offerings to feature significant events for all divisions, on all surfaces, from sprinters to stayers. Almost as talked about as the races themselves will be the sartorial display at the glitzy event: women dressed to the nines and men in immaculately tailored suits will fill the galleries to cheer for their favourites, while not-so-secretly vying to be picked as winners in the Jaguar Style Stakes. The Dubai World Cup is the brainchild of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum –Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai – and stands as a fitting testament to his passion for horses and racing. The first edition took place at the Nad Al-Sheba racecourse in 1996, when 11 of the world’s best thoroughbreds burst away from the starting line and stormed down
the dirt track and into racing history. The inaugural winner, clocking two minutes and three seconds, was the American thoroughbred Cigar, later voted the ‘Racehorse of the Decade’. The winners have continued to be horses of the highest calibre, distinguishing the Dubai World Cup not only for the quantity of the prize, but the quality of the entrants as well. The list of nominees for this year’s instalment is compiled of an international cast of some of racing’s current and emerging stars, and features a number of trainers who have previously won the world’s richest race. The contest has attracted an impressive roster of 271 horses, representing 12 countries in which the contenders are being trained. Eight of the 11 trainers to have won the Dubai World Cup are represented by nominees. Emirati trainer Saeed bin Suroor, who holds the record with five Dubai World Cup wins, has six nominees. American trainer Bob Baffert has nine horses eligible to the race, led by his Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic runner up Game on Dude. The remaining Dubai World Cup winning trainers include Richard Mandella (with two nominees) and Bill Mott, Dale Romans, Eoin Harty, Katsuhiko Sumii (last year’s winner) and Kiaran McLaughlin, all with one each. The all-star list of nominees include three horses that earned Eclipse Awards in the US: Animal Kingdom, the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, champion three-year-old male; Acclamation, champion older male; and Royal Delta, Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner. Other notable winners include Blue Bunting, Cirrus des Aigles, Shackleford, So You Think and Ruler on Ice. There is also a number of 2011 Dubai World Cup programme veterans: River Jetez, Transcend, Wigmore Hall, Gitano Hernando and Master of Hounds. Characteristic of traditional Arabian hospitality, the subsidies and incentives for the Dubai World Cup are outstanding. The Dubai Racing Club provides contenders with air tickets from all over the world and with the biggest purses by far, it’s little wonder that the best of the best flock to the city every spring. dv MaRCH 2012

To get a real taste of Dubai’s cultural face, head over to the Al Quoz industrial area, a hotspot for the city’s creative types. With a gritty combination of car workshops, warehouses and factories, nothing about its name is misleading… but don’t let this deter you! A cluster of galleries makes for a worthwhile artistic venture outside of the city centre; just think of it as our answer to Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. Mojo, Lawrie Shabibi and Carbon 12 are all located within a one-block radius, undoubtedly making Alserkal Avenue the hub of artistic activity in Al Quoz. The area is home to several leading spaces that will participate in Art Dubai including Gallery Etemad, IVDE and Green Art Gallery. Alserkal Avenue will also welcome six new spaces on March 19, exhibiting everything from designer collectible furniture and fine antiques to more graphic and experimental forms. Head over to view art, engage with the artists and gallerists… and generally soak up the artsy ambience.
Nothing flaunts the city’s newfound quest for culture quite like Art Dubai, the region’s leading art event. Promising to be bigger and bolder than ever, the sixth instalment will play host to 75 galleries from 31 countries, with works by over 500 artists on display. More festival than fair, Art Dubai prides itself on providing the region with a cultural platform that unites the region’s art collectors, students, curators and enthusiasts. On the roster of first-timers are Arndt from Berlin, Rodolphe Janssen from Brussels, Lombard Freid Projects from New York, Galerie Perrotin from Paris and Platform China from Beijing. Returning galleries include Athr Gallery from Jeddah, Chantal Crousel from Paris, Experimenter from Kolkata, Goodman from Johannesburg, Grey Noise from Lahore, Marianne Boesky Gallery from New York and Sfeir-Semler from Hamburg. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect:
The Global Art Forum (GAF) will kick off at the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha from March 18-19, continuing at Art Dubai. Under the direction of writer Shuman Basar, GAF will explore The Medium of Media, examining the different roles that media has played since the Arab uprisings began through six days of conversations, presentations and screenings. Hosted at The Pavilion Downtown Dubai, Art Week Education Programme is a series of the monthly seminars that provides students
and art buffs with insights into the region’s arts scene.
Dubai’s historic Bastakiya quarter is home to the Artists-in-Residence Dubai programme, which selects six artists and one curator for a three-month residency. Their site-specific works will debut at the Sikka Art Fair, running alongside Art Dubai from March 15-25.
Art Dubai Projects – an interactive programme of curated commissions, films screenings, talks and performances – will feature new initiatives such as live, city-wide radio programmes and a new Performance Night staged at Traffic. Five Indonesian galleries have been invited to participate, and will showcase pieces created especially for the event.

Yes, we admit views of the city from Smith Tower come at half the cost and rarely with a wait… but a first-time trip to Seattle just wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Space Needle. Visit the city’s most iconic symbol for stunning, 360-degree views of Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, the city skyline and beyond. Try and arrive just before sunset so you can watch the city change into a seemingly endless sea of lights in about 30 minutes. Tip: if you dine at the rotating 28

Sporadic rainfall and the Space Needle may scream Seattle, but there’s so much more to the Emerald City. it’s essentially what happens when grunge rock, too much caffeine, bill Gates, bruce Lee, a knack for counterculture and a love for the outdoors are haphazardly fused together. Here are 10 things to do and see on your trip. WORDS SAMIA QAIYUM

Loud, chaotic and oh-sowonderful is Pike Place Market, one of America’s oldest and best farmers’ markets. Dubbed ‘the soul of Seattle’, it features nine acres of fishmongers, fresh produce stands, lavish flower displays, craft stalls and street performers alongside unique stores such as antique dealers and herbal apothecaries. Be sure to bring your appetite; eateries here feature everything from
handmade cheeses to piroshkys and steaming, hearty chowder. Amidst the madness, keep your eyes peeled for attractions like the ‘flying fish’, the germy Gum Wall and Rachel the Pig, a 250-kg bronze piggy bank.

For a great two-in-one outing, head to the Experience Music Project (EMP) museum, housed in an eccentrically shaped structure inspired by a smashed guitar. EMP is an interactive music museum that started out as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, but has grown to include 80,000 rare artefacts and memorabilia such as handwritten lyrics by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Janis Joplin’s pink feather boa. Let your innerrockstar loose in the interactive rooms, where you can play real instruments ‘on stage’ for a crowd (musical talent optional). But skip your encore and appease your inner geek instead with a peek at costumes, props, models and rare manuscripts from sci-fi movies and TV shows over at the Science Fiction Museum.

Now you can see parts of the old city thanks to the popular Underground Tour, which takes you through nondescript sidewalks, doorways and passages hidden beneath the streets of Pioneer Square. If it’s raining – again – find shelter at The Crocodile and discover why Seattle’s music scene is so much more than just grunge and emo. Arguably Seattle’s best live music venue, the once-grimy spot has seen the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and Alice In Chains take the stage, all while launching the careers of nearly obscure musicians and bands. Breaking many a heart, it abruptly closed in 2007 but was resurrected with a swanky makeover in 2009. With an upgraded stage and new viewing balcony, it is once again home to gigs by some of Seattle’s best local and touring indie-rock bands. MaRCH 2012

Just weeks after announcing record passenger traffic of 51 million in 2011, dubai international earned consumer recognition for its customer service quality by winning the coveted airports Council international’s (aCi’s) airport Service Quality (aSQ) awards for best airport in the Middle East and Most improved airport in the Middle East. This is dXb’s second consecutive win at the annual aSQ awards in both categories. Commenting on the airport’s success, Paul Griffiths, CEO of dubai airports, said: “dubai international’s consecutive win at the aSQ awards is a direct result of dedicated employees, innovation, a systematic approach and an unmatched spirit of collaboration amongst the airport community here to work together as one entity to achieve the common goal of providing the best service possible. “dubai international has emerged as one of the world’s busiest hubs for international passengers, yet customer service quality remains one of our top priorities. This award acknowledges the high importance we attach to fulfilling and indeed exceeding the expectations of our customers.”
Last year, dubai airports launched a number of new facilities and services to further enhance customer service across dXb. These included the expansion of the “May i Help You” service; the signing of several service level agreements with strategic partners such as ground service provider dnata and dubai Police; the launch of dXb Connect, the world’s first prepaid card for airport customers; the introduction of modular sleeping pods called SnoozeCubes; the launch of mydXb, a mobile retail service directory for android and apple handheld devices; and the trialling of bilingual ‘virtual assistants’ that use the latest projection technology to guide passengers through travel formalities. dubai airports is also currently carrying out the world’s largest airport service delivery measurement project to further enhance service quality at dXb. Griffiths added that since passengers play a direct role in the outcome of the aSQ awards, the accolade is a true reflection of what customers feel about the airport’s service standards. The annual aSQ awards recognise and reward the best airports in the world according to aCi's aSQ passenger satisfaction survey.
Today’s minds, tomorrow’s leaders With the aim of attracting and developing the next generation of Emirati aviation professionals, dubai airports recently launched a nationwide graduate development programme dubbed Masar (arabic for ‘path’). The yearlong programme is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to national development. in its inaugural year, Masar will offer eight Emirati graduates, selected through a stringent merit-based process, an opportunity to acquire skills and experience in a variety of fields through specialised training, external workshops and on-the-job training. Masar will target graduates of Emirates aviation College, american university of dubai and dubai university, among others. Qualifying national graduates from other universities can also apply. at the end of the programme, candidates may be selected for continued employment with dubai airports based on performance. 32

uaE nationals are playing an increasingly influential role in the success of dubai airports. according to 2011 staff statistics, 37 per cent of all employees in supervisory and management grades are uaE nationals while 24 per cent of the total employee base comprises Emiratis. Further some 60 per cent of executive-level managers are Emirati. “i endorse the approach we are taking by focusing on the development of uaE nationals at the management level to ensure a strong pipeline of talent is available to become our leaders of the future. i am equally pleased with the progress to date,” said HH Sheikh ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, Chairman of dubai airports. Candidates can apply for the Masar programme by registering with dubai airports on www.dubaiairports.ae. applications will be accepted until March 19, 2012.

More collaboration needed dubai airports CEO Paul Griffiths has called on aviation leaders to change the industry’s attitude and approach to solving chronic problems that have made it so susceptible to economic downturns. “in an industry beset by misguided regulation, taxation, protectionism and drowning in red ink, we have to stop characterising challenges as internal and external. if they affect our business, then they are all internal. it’s the attitude that needs to change,” said Griffiths as a member of an iaTa industry panel at the recently held Singapore airshow Leadership Summit. The panel – which featured aviation heavyweights Frank durinckx, director-General of belgium’s Civil aviation authority; Virgin australia CEO John borghetti; airbus CEO Thomas Enders; Singapore airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong and French Transport Minister Thierry Mariani – tackled a number of industry hot topics including regulation, liberalisation, taxation and profitability. "The various parts of the aviation value chain – airports, airlines, retailers, manufacturers and the like – still operate in silos. This often impacts the level of service provided to our mutual customers and restricts the value we generate as a business," added Griffiths. "The automotive, refining and manufacturing sectors have done this

successfully. dubai’s aviation model also offers an example with its collaborative approach and supportive business environment. The end result is a sector that yields healthy returns and supports $22 billion in economic activity or 28 per cent of dubai's GdP.”
CARRY FORWARD dubai airports recently announced traffic statistics for dubai World Central (dWC) that showed the airport handled 89,729 tonnes of airfreight during 2011, its first full calendar year of operations. Last year, dWC’s average monthly air cargo volumes totalled 7,477 tonnes compared to the 795 tonnes per month recorded during the airport’s first half year of operations in 2010. Cargo transit traffic comprised 32,989 tonnes or 37 per cent of volume. aircraft movements for the year came in at 8,198 of which 3,609 (44 per cent) were commercial cargo flights, 4,548 (55.5 per cent) were test and training flights while 41 (0.5 per cent) were general aviation operations. during 2011, 36 airlines operated into dWC, predominantly as cargo charter operations. “although the airport is in its infancy, incremental cargo traffic growth has been steady and continues to ramp up as new operations are launched,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of dubai airports. “Sea to air freight traffic growth was particularly robust as airlines took advantage of the airport’s bonded link to the Jebel ali port. additionally the road feeder service operating between dubai international and dWC facilitated the smooth flow of transit airfreight. Combined, dubai’s two airports handled 2,279,219 tonnes of airfreight in 2011, which is up marginally from 2010.” “it’s clear dWC will play a pivotal role in providing the capacity needed to accommodate projected growth,” added Griffiths. “in terms of cargo, the need is more immediate. by 2015, cargo volumes will top three million tonnes exceeding the current capacity of dubai
international. We expect a good proportion of that growth to spill over to dWC. as for passenger operations, dubai international will continue to serve as the primary focus of expansion and we will be investing $7.8 billion to boost capacity to 90 million passengers by 2018. That said, operational trails for dWC’s passenger terminal are set to start during the second quarter of this year and we could see commercial passenger operations commence in 2013.” MaRCH 2012

If you have a fear of flying, try the following: Request an aisle seat so you can move around the cabin more easily Ask your doctor about taking a sleeping pill or anti-anxiety medication before you fly Pack items of comfort such as calming music or a favourite pillow and blanket Distract yourself with a funny movie, crossword puzzle or good book Let the cabin crew know you’re anxious so they can keep an eye on you Avoid caffeine and other stimulants that can make you more jittery

IN TRANSIT WITH
You’re heading to Mount Everest this month. What do you think will be your biggest challenge? The Body Disposal Form that each climber has to submit keeps occupying my mind; it dictates what is to be done with your body if you die during the climb. Above 8,000 metres, the body gradually starts dying so if someone collapses above this altitude, you have to leave them behind. The logic is there’s very little oxygen and if you start helping someone alone, it’s probably going to be two victims rather than one. As a husband and the oldest of three children, I have a huge issue with leaving someone behind. I’m not convinced I’ll be able to walk away.
What goes through your mind upon reaching a summit?
PINNACLES OF PASSION
Atte on C erro Aco ncagua's summit
Calling him a daredevil in the disguise of a Finnish telecoms executive would be like calling the Burj Khalifa a tall building. Meet Atte Miettinen: a Dubai resident on a quest to climb the Seven Summits, the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. After conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Mount Kosciuszko, Vinson Massif and Cerro Aconcagua, he’s set his sights on climbing Mount Everest and Denali in the months ahead. What do you like best about living in Dubai? It’s a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. I’ve always enjoyed learning new things, meeting new people… I’m very curious by nature. Dubai is a great place because every day, you meet people from all over the world. It’s also very central; I enjoy travelling a great deal and it’s easy to get to many places.
How do you explore a new city? I come from a country where you only use cars when you need them, so I like to visit places where I can walk around… you see and hear a lot more this way. I find it nice to walk around the heart of a city, where you get a different pulse. Sometimes I just sit in a café and look at people, try to listen to their stories to get a good feeling about what’s happening.
You’ve travelled to roughly 90 countries across all seven continents. What’s your favourite travel destination? I loved Antarctica; I’ve been there both as a tourist and a mountain climber. It was so, so unique and untouched. I get a huge kick 66
DUBAI VOYAGER
out of being able to go to places that have not been exposed to mass tourism.
What have your expeditions taught you? That you have the capacity for a lot more than you expect. Challenges feel huge at first, but then you realise, each is manageable if you tackle it one step at a time. I’ve also learnt a lot about teamwork; on the mountains, you have to succeed as a group and help each other. I also appreciate the little things more – when you’re at high altitudes with a headache, it’s wet and cold, you’re sleeping on a rock… you think back to your warm bed in Dubai. I now value experiences more than material things.
How would you compare being physically vs. mentally ready for a climb? The physical side is easier, because it’s just plain training. Mental preparation is more difficult because you’re not really sure what you’re preparing for. Before I leave for a climb, I’m constantly running scenarios – like what I would do if a storm blows away my tent – in my head to prepare myself.
It’s a difficult thing to explain… you just have to climb a mountain yourself to experience it! [laughs] I need a psychologist to explain this – I’ve seen many people almost collapse when they summit because something in their bodies tells them, “you can relax now”… when actually, they’re only halfway done. It’s a weird mixture of exhaustion and happiness. You look around and the clouds are below you; it’s a magical kind of feeling. It’s also a little disorienting because it reminds me of being in an airplane… I feel the urge to order a coke before remembering I’m on a mountain!
During a climb, how do you spend the extensive downtime while your body acclimates? We rest a lot because the entire process really takes a toll on one’s body. We do lots of gear preparation, training for different situations and planning for the climb. Sometimes we read, play cards and listen to our iPods.
Can you share one of your memorable moments? Many are from the Indonesia trip. We flew into a village in the middle of a jungle that was discovered only 60 years ago. Villagers here walk around naked with bows and arrows, and eat spiders. We spent a night there and their idea of decoration was wooden branches with stuffed birds without heads… it felt like a real “we’re pretty far from Dubai” moment! I spoke to one of the village elders, who looked about 70 or so, and asked his age through an interpreter. He replied “maybe 18” because he had no concept of time!
We’re optimistic that you’ll summit the next two… so what’s next? Right now, I’m focused on the task at hand. Every rational cell in my brain is saying “get this out of your system and get a real job”… while another part goes “well, it would be nice to ski to the South Pole”. Let’s see… time will tell! dv
