ToP SPoT Dubai International Airport is now the world’s third busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic and fourth in terms of cargo traffic. This new world ranking means that the only two airports with more international passengers than Dubai International are Charles De Gaulle in Paris and London’s Heathrow. This is a remarkable achievement for an airport that’s little over five decades old! Meanwhile, the UAE’s impressive Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi has been identified as one of the world’s top tourist attractions by the popular travel site TripAdvisor. According to the website, Sheikh Zayed Mosque is now listed in the global top 16, alongside Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Colosseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Table Mountain in Cape Town and New York’s Central Park. This is no mean feat for a mosque which opened in 2007, yet in a short space of time has come to be synonymous with the UAE capital, welcoming over 4.6 million visitors and worshipers last year. The mosque features 82 domes and 1,000 columns, as well as the world’s largest handmade carpet and the world’s largest chandelier – measuring 10 metres in diameter and weighing twelve tones. Regarded as an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture, it is also the largest mosque in the GCC. Back in Dubai, plans to build, the Dhs 6 billion Bluewaters Island developments in front of Jumeirah Beach Residence, have been unveiled. A multi-purpose project to be opened in phases over the next few years, the thrilling new tourist attraction is set to include the Dubai Eye – the world’s largest Ferris wheel at 210 metres tall. This month Dubai is offering up an exciting line-up of events, from the finals of the annual Dubai Duty Free-sponsored ATP Tennis Championships to Art Dubai and Dubai Design Days, as well as the Dubai Jazz Festival and Dubai International Boat Show… there is something for everyone. Come join us and enjoy… dv The dv team Email: dubaivoyager@motivate.ae | Twitter: @DubaiAirports | Digital Edition: issuu.com

The UAE’s most important cultural showcase, its highlights include Design Days Dubai, The City is Your Canvas project and Galleries Night, under which more than 40 new exhibitions will be held across the city in Al Quoz and Dubai International Financial Center. dv’s Nusrat Ali spotlights some of the most awaited events:

ART DUBAI 2013 Art Dubai returns to the city between 20 and 23 March at the Madinat Jumeirah. Sponsored by Cartier and held in partnership with Abraaj Capital, the 7th edition of the leading international art fair will see the world’s most influential galleries come together and engage in a dynamic exchange with the booming regional art scene. Over 500 artists will participate in Art Dubai, brought together by the selected participating galleries and the fair’s extensive non-commercial programming. This year’s exciting line-up includes events such as Marker 2013, Sculpture on the Beach and the unveiling of works by the winners of the annual Abraaj Group Art Prize. TALKING ABOUT ART A part of the Art Dubai fair, the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum will be held from 17 to 23 March at Madinat Jumeirah. This year’s edition is entitled ‘It Mean This’ and will investigate the words, terms, clichés and misunderstandings that proliferate in the art world and beyond. culture, arts and heritage, in a unique, custom-built location at the base of Burj Khalifa. Enabling Dubai to rank among an elite group of cities – London, Paris, Basel, New York and Miami – Design Days will focus on never-before-seen contemporary works alongside vintage and classic design pieces from the 20th century. cars and bikes. Artist Elise Vazelakis’ 12-meter long ‘MASHRAFFITI’ display became the focal point of the buzzing locality. Inspired by the geometric patterns of the intricate Mashrabiyas, long revered as the cornerstone of Islamic decoration, Vazelakis’ installation features the eyes of an Arab woman spray-painted in graffiti type fashion. The impetus behind the image was the intrigue of the privacy Mashrabiya has provided for women, enabling a view of the street without being seen. Masraffiti is a part of ‘The City is Your Canvas’ project organised by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The project aims to add a new dimension to the dynamic JBR locality by allowing UAE-based artists to display their work in different locations at The Walk.

ART STEPS OUT Pots, staircases, bridges, benches and walls became canvases for urban art expressionism as thirty of the city’s creative minds took to The Walk at JBR, one of Dubai’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. Commissioned by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and Xpoze, the Idea Factory run by Emirati women, in collaboration with Dubai Properties Group (DPG), the Emirati artists have transformed the face of The Walk at JBR, under the theme ‘The City is Your Canvas.’ Through the fourth edition of the ‘Dubai Outdoor Art Project’, the selected artists have explored the various facets of visual arts - from visual to installations - allowing them to discover and maximise their creative potential. In addition to producing over 40 artworks, participating artists held workshops and gave visitors, children and families the opportunity to also take part in creating public art pieces including sculpture, light calligraphy and painting.

SET IN STONE Laying the foundation for stone art in the country was Sculpture Dubai 2013. Held from 18 February to 8 March, celebrated artists from 13 Arab countries participated in the first edition of the event. Sculpture Dubai was hosted by the Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai with the aim to stimulate the art of sculpture, encouraging the exchange of culture and artistic expertise and provide a platform to network with elite Arab world’s fine artists. A number of activities and programmes, including student workshops, were held during the symposium.

EYES FOR ART For the month of February, all eyes were on The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence, and it wasn’t just for the dazzling displays of super

BITS OF PAPER Underrated and grossly misused, the humble sheet of paper finally received due credit at the XVA Gallery’s exhibition entitled ‘Paper’, a group show by renowned Indian, Pakistani and Arab artists. Indian sculptors Anish Kapoor and Debjani Bhardwaj, Iraqi maestro Walid Siti, Pakistani contemporary visual artist Imran Channa and Iranian artist Mohsen Ahmedvand explored the modest medium of paper, underlining the diversity of its application and redefining its limits of artistic expression. The exhibition ran from 4 February to 13 March. dv MARCH 2013

With simultaneous translation between Arabic and English in all sessions too, the ideal of shared friendship is uppermost. So fear not if your own literary credentials are rather shaky – remaining open-minded and enthusiastic is the key to enjoying this festival to the max. march 2013

FIRST AND FINEST CAMEL MILK CHOCOLATE.

In the Arabian desert, camel milk is a source of life. Rich in vitamins and minerals it has long been appreciated by local Bedouin for its healing properties and life-giving benefits. Now, thanks to Al Nassma chocolates, it is also a source of luxurious pleasure. To complement this unique ingredient our chocolatier selects only the best: a cuvĂŠe of cocoa beans, the richest acacia honey, and genuine Bourbon vanilla. The result is a well defined aroma deeply evocative of its Arabian origins. Of course, in faithfulness to our origin, all our products are halal. For the discerning traveller Al Nassma is a treasured memento of a desert land; for those looking for a unique and delicious gift Al Nassma represents the refined elegance and luxury of Arabia.

One of the LitFest’s most acclaimed events is the Orwell Lecture, sponsored by Emirates NBD, which commemorates the life and work of British author and social activist George Orwell. This year it will be delivered by Dr Shashi Tharoor, the celebrated United Nations Peace Keeper, refugee worker, human rights activist, a former Minister of State for External Affairs and now an elected member of the Indian Parliament. His topic of Globalisation, Disruption and The Human Imagination will no doubt include a discussion of his latest book Pax Indica: India and the World of the 21st Century – a study of India’s foreign relations and global strategy. While this will undoubtedly be an unforgettable address, the LitFest also promises other ‘firsts’. The Public Area Events programme, for instance, includes Roger McGough and Mark Cockram’s Dubai Doors Project – comprising poetry, painting and collaborations with Emirati artists. Mixing mediums also is Robert Crowther whose Icons of Dubai paper-engineering displays will be eagerly anticipated, as will Korky Paul’s free-standing mural project. For those who are hoping to pick up tips from authors, Kathy Shalhoub’s Finding Your Creative Muse should help. As will The Quick Pitch – a workshop conducted by literary agent Luigi Bonomi in which attendees get feedback on their ideas for a book. This year also offers several writing prizes, of which the Montegrappa First Fiction award will give aspiring writers a chance to have their work evaluated, edited and published by professionals. It's no surprise, therefore, that many events on the programme are already sold out. And if you need any further incentive, as Abuhoul states: “All of our sessions are live and unique – never to be repeated – and the discerning public in Dubai understands this.” We’ll see you there! dv

fficially, the flat racing season began in Dubai on 10 January and will culminate in the Dubai World Cup Carnival, traditionally held on the last Saturday of March. This is the fourth year that the Carnival, which encompasses 11 highquality race meetings featuring 27 Group and Listed races, will be held at the state-of-the-art Tapeta track that is Meydan Racecourse since it was launched in 2004. Super Saturday is scheduled for 9 March and is always seen as a spectacular dress rehearsal for horses looking to compete at the Dubai World Cup, which is held on 30 March. This will mark the second year that the Dubai World Cup programme will comprise nine races; when the Dubai World Cup debuted in 1996 at Nad Al Sheba there were a total of six races. The list of Group races will include the Group 1 $10 million Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates airline; Group 1 $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic, presented by Longines; Group 1 $5 million Dubai Duty Free, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free; Group 1 $1 million Al Quoz Sprint, sponsored by Emirates NBD; Group 2 $2m Dubai Golden Shaheen, sponsored by Gulf News; Group 2 $2m UAE Derby, sponsored by The Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group; Group 2 $1 million Godolphin Mile, sponsored by Etisalat; Group 3 US$1 million Dubai Gold Cup, sponsored by Al Tayer Motors; and the Group 1 $250,000 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians, sponsored by Emaar. Dubai World Cup attracts global attention as its line-up of worldclass racehorses, jockeys and owners compete for a total prize fund

of Dh27.25 million. And with approximately 80,000 guests attending, it is famed as the social and fashion highlight of the Dubai calendar. Apron Views and Bubble Lounge at Meydan are the places to be seen and spot celebrities like Aishwarya Rai, who was one of the judges in the 2012 Best Dressed competition. Indeed, almost as much attention is paid to the Jaguar Style Stakes as is given over to the race cards. This year radio and TV presenter Simone Heng will join Jaguar Style Stakes judges Simon Lock (former Creative Director of Dubai Fashion Week) and Fashion Director and Stylist Mandi Kingsbury on the judges’ podium alongside Jaguar marketing manager Nicola Gibson. Categories for 2013 include ‘Best Dressed Lady’ (winner and runner-up), ‘Best Hat’, ‘Best Dressed Man’, ‘Best Dressed Couple’ and ‘Most Creative Hat’. The lucky ‘Best Dressed Lady’ will drive away a brand new Jaguar XK for a year and winners of the other categories will receive prizes from Jaguar and additional sponsors such as HTC mobile phones, NStyle International, The Meydan hotel, Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa and Meydan Beach. The winner of ‘Most Elegant Lady’, sponsored by Longines and selected by a team of style spotters as racing guests arrive on the day, will also be presented as part of the Jaguar Style Stakes programme. It should be noted that the dress code for the free admission area is casual attire; however smart attire is required for those entering the Meydan Grandstand hospitality area. hats and proper racewear, while t-shirts, trainers, flip flops and shorts are strictly prohibited in the Parade Ring. Fashionistas will need no hints as to what’s in and what’s not. The catwalk this season is all about lace, white and monochrome chic… But what about the horses? Since the inaugural race was won by Cigar, owned by American Allen E Paulson, there have been many notable names in the roll of honour and each have given the race credibility and international clout. Singspiel was Sheikh Mohammed’s first winner in 1997 while Dubai Millennium provided a stunning victory in Godolphin colours in 2000. Jockey Jerry Bailey remains the most successful rider in the event with four winners. Having ridden the first two winners, he won on Captain Steve (2001) and Street Cry (2002), the latter providing leading trainer Saeed Bin Suroor with the third of his record five winners in the race. His later winners were Moon Ballad (2003) and Electrocutionist (2006). The Americans have had the most winners with Pleasantly Perfect (2004), Roses In May (2005), Invasor (2007), Curlin (2008) and Well Armed (2009). In 2010 Glória de Campeão gave Brazil a memorable triumph in the race and Victoire Pisa (2011) added to the international flavour of the event when winning for Japan. In 2012 the Dubai World Cup was won by Monterosso, owned

by the Godolphin Stables and trained by Mahmoud Al Zarooni. He was followed home by stable companion Capponi, another first achievement in the race. This year the Dubai World Cup has received a staggering 272 entries from 11 countries at the end of the free nominations stage, led by a 184-horse entry from the UAE. As expected, the Group 1 contest has attracted some of the best thoroughbreds from around the world, including 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, 2012 Eclipse Award-winning and Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic heroine Royal Delta and 2012 South African champion Igugu. Trained by South African legend Mike de Kock, Igugu is hotly anticipated to win, while Argentina’s Premio Classico General Belgrano and Breeder’s Cup Marathon Winner Calidoscopio are also nominated. Defending champion Monterosso looks like the pick of the local entries as he bids to become the first horse in history to win the race twice. Monterosso represents six-time Dubai World Cup winner Godolphin and, together with the progressive Farhh, twice runner-up to the great Frankel last season, heads a significant 28-horse entry from the stable. Whatever the result, a visit to Dubai World Cup is a mixture of excitement, glamour, and pride in being a part of such an acclaimed international event. dv

egend has it that Warsaw got its name from a love story; that of a fisherman called Wars who meets a beautiful siren, called Sawa, on the banks of the river Vistula. They met, married and lived happily ever after. This romantic story is at odds with some of the city’s more turbulent history but tourists are once more falling in love with the capital known for Chopin, cuisine, clubbing and its curiosity factor. dv chooses its top ten must-sees.

1]

Get the View Start any trip to Warsaw with a visit to the Palace of Science and Culture in the heart of the capital. It’s the tallest building in Poland and at 230 metres, with 42 floors is the 8th tallest building in Europe. Take a lift to the 30th floor for a great overview of the city. The Neo gothic building, by the way, was built in the 1950s as a gift from Joseph Stalin to the Polish people to remind them of where their loyalties should lie during the Cold War. In 1967 it’s also where the Rolling Stones played a concert. After communism ended in 1989, the cavernous palace was transformed into a multiplex. Now you’ll find that the building plays host to a cinema, theatre, museum, university, bars and a swimming pool. 28

Stroll around the old town Be warned though, the Old Town is not so old! The Old Town (stare miasto) and castle (zamek) have been completely rebuilt from paintings after World War II. During the war and especially during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the city was torched and razed to the ground. You can get an idea of what that looked like if you watch the famous scene in The Pianist when Adrian Brody emerges from his final hideout and looks at the completely ruined Warsaw. Now though, you can enjoy a main square dominated by cafes and restaurants as well as the Mermaid Statue – and painters selling their art along the ramparts of the city.

3]

Crazy for Chopin Warsaw’s most famous resident is omnipresent. There’s the recently revamped Chopin Museum which has a concert hall and memorabilia. For diehard fans, you can stop by the Church of All Saints by the Copernicus Monument where his heart is buried, while in summer, a bus to the Royal Park (Lazenki) will not only yield a boating lake but the chance to enjoy an open air Chopin concert - a must-do on any trip to Warsaw. Meanwhile on the outskirts of

Warsaw is Kampinos national park and UNESCO site worth visiting (look out for moose, beaver and lynx!), if you combine with a visit to Chopin’s birthplace at Zelazowa Wola village. His hometown also houses a museum and musicians come to play here from all over the world each summer.

iMMerSe yourSelf in hiStory The Warsaw Rising Museum commemorates the definitive event in the city’s history when Polish Freedom fighters were completely annihilated by the Nazis in 1944 after battling for an independent Poland.

SaMple the CuiSine Traditionally Polish food is hearty and tasty – comfort food at its best. Try the specialist dumpling restaurants (pierogarnia) with every conceivable filling from mince to mushrooms such as Kompania Piwna or Bar Krokecik. If you have a sweet tooth there’s WZ (traditional Warsaw cream cake) apple pie, doughnuts or cheesecake. The famous Blikle Café located on Nowy Swiat Street is a must do. It’s survived two world wars and is famous for its doughnuts. For foodies Atelier Amaro is worth a visit, being the first Polish restaurant to earn a Michelin Rising Star Award.

taKe in the niGht life The café scene in Warsaw is thriving, and has much to do with the Polish tradition of drinking vodka (neat and chilled in 50 ml measurements). Famous brands include Zubrowka; flavoured with bison grass from the Bialowieza Forest, berry-flavoured Wisniowka and Jarzebiak and lemon-infused Cytrynowka. Before knocking it back in one go, friends say Na zdrowie (a toast to good health). At the Palace of Science and Culture you could try the artsy Café Kulturalna that often hosts alternative music bands that play small live concerts, while on Foksal street there are a whole host of bars with beautiful patios. End the night at the post-industrial style club 1500 square metres Do Wynajecia or one of the many clubs on Mazowiecka street. Warsaw may not yet be Berlin but it’s making up for lost ground on the international party scene.

ViSit wilanow The beautiful baroque palace and gardens complex, dating from the 13th century has been called The Polish Versailles and was the residence of King Jan III Sobieski in 1676. He is famous for two things – his victory over the Turkish army in the Battle of Vienna in 1683 and also for the passionate letters he wrote to his beloved French-born wife. Situated in a rolling green park and housing a museum, it’s the perfect pick me up after a late night!

Stay A stone’s throw from the Palace of Culture and Science and a short walk from the Old Town is Warsaw’s first boutique hotel, Rialto. Opened in 2001 after the renovation of a turn of the century townhouse, it has been finished in art deco and art nouveau style and looks like a film setting. Much of the furniture is antique and sourced from auction houses around Europe with each room having a certain theme from William Morris to colonial. As such, the Rialto harks back to Warsaw’s golden age but still makes guests’comfort a priority. dv

Shop! The fact that Warsaw leads the country’s economy and provides a home for several international companies, the stock exchange, government and universities, it goes without saying that the shopping scene is thriving too. The Golden Terraces Centre, located beside Warsaw Central Station and the Palace of Culture, has homegrown Polish shops as well as all the big European names like Zara, Marks & Spencer, Topshop and so on. ubai International Airport is today the new face of the world’s aviation industry. In 2012 passenger traffic surged 13% to 57.6 million – exceeding Dubai Airports’ beginning-of-the-year forecast by one million – and this was even before the opening of Concourse A. Envisaged always as much more than an airport, this corporate vision is more than evident in the newly opened Concourse A which has pushed the barriers of lifestyle airports and raised the bar across the aviation industry. dv explores the concourse, the length of which is the size of 27 tennis courts placed end-to-end.

the PLan According to IATA, the UAE is the most connected country in the world and this is in no small part due to Dubai’s thriving aviation sector. Over two-thirds of the world’s population lives within eight hours flying time from Dubai and a third lives within four hours. By 2020, some 98.5 million passengers and over four million tonnes of air freight will pass through Dubai International each year. The fleets and networks of Emirates and flydubai (the Government of Dubai’s budget airline) will grow considerably to accommodate traffic and capture market share. Together with the expected expansion of services operated by the more than 140 airlines that fly into Dubai International, Dubai Airports forecasts a cumulative annual growth rate of 7.2%. To keep up with the demand, the world’s most significant airline and airport expansion programme, the Strategic Plan 2020 (SP 2020), has been underway in Dubai. SP 2020 is Dubai Airports’ $7.8 billion (Dhs28.65 billion) 10-year master plan, which outlines aggressive expansion plans for airspace, airfield, stands and terminal areas at Dubai International. Concourse A is a vital element of this plan which will see Dubai International become the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic by the end of 2015. In just its first month of operations, Concourse A handled 461,972 pieces of luggage carried on more than 2,450 flights serving 589,234 passengers. It is envisaged that Concourse A is going to increase Dubai International’s passenger-handling capacity to 75 million from the current 60 million. 36

the eMIrates Factor Dubai’s Emirates is the world’s largest operator of the twindeck A380 with 31 in service and another 59 on order. So, it was only fitting that Dubai stepped forward to set up a world-class facility to meet the needs of the airline and aircraft. Concourse A, which is a part of the Emirates Terminal 3 complex, has been designed as the home of the super-jumbo from where passengers will connect to more than 21 Emirates A380 destinations across Europe, North America, Australia and Asia, including A380 flights on Australian airline, Qantas, as part of the global partnership. Built at a cost of $3.2 billion (Dh11.75 billion), Concourse A (CA) covers a sprawling 528,000 square metres across 11 floors. It features 20 aircraft contact gates, all capable of accommodating the A380 (two of these gates can handle B777 aircrafts), in addition to 13 remote stands. At the Concourse, passengers will find an enhanced Dubai Duty Free offering; Emirates First and Business Class lounges; and the Dubai International Hotel. Zen gardens and water features dot the building while natural sunlight streams in through the wing-shaped glass panels to give the concourse a feel of capaciousness. grand oPenIng Prior to its phased opening, CA went through rigorous operational trials to ensure flawless and smooth operations

once open. Thousands of members of the public volunteered for the multiple operational trials of the new facility. Men, women, children, senior citizens and people with special needs played the part of passengers arriving, departing and transiting through the concourse; checking the readiness of the staff, systems and procedures as well as testing the effectiveness of signs and travelling on the train from Terminal 3 to the concourse. These trials helped yield valuable insights and CA’s processes and systems were further fine-tuned. On 2 January this year, Dubai Airports began a phased opening of Concourse A, with four gates put into operation. On 11 February, 2013, all 20 gates at Concourse A were operational. “Much like the opening of Terminal 3 in 2008, the phase-in of Concourse A has resulted in the seamless introduction of worldclass infrastructure that responds to the rapid growth of Emirates and caters to the needs of its discerning and truly global customer base,” Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said.

the exPerIence Today, not only is CA the only purpose-built A380 facility in the world, but it is also a seamless meld of cutting-edge technology, gold class services and some of the most exclusive retail and gourmet offerings. The novel experience begins with the way passengers are transported to Concourse A from Terminal 3 and Concourse B. An underground ‘train’ or Automated People Mover (APM) - the first of its kind in the Middle East - brings passengers to CA in a journey of just over two minutes. The APM has separate lines and platforms for passengers in transit. CA is also partially underground, comprising the APM stations - both arriving and departing. Its lower and upper levels are connected by means of a special vertical transportation system, known as Sky Trains. Unlike any other airport facility in the world, the 11-floor CA gives the First Class and Business Class lounges their own dedicated floors with direct access to aircraft boarding gates. The lounges, which extend the entire length of the 528,000-square metre concourse, are the largest in the world and offer customers’ fine dining, conference rooms, business centres, a spa, entertainment zones and cigar lounges, as well as children’s play areas. The Business Class lounge has an exclusive Ezone entertainment area which features a driving simulator and Sony PS3 units, while First Class lounge passengers have the added convenience of a dedicated duty free shopping area and a Le Clos wine cellar. Above the lounges is the hotel level, which also includes a health club and a business centre. Dubai International Hotel has both four-andfive star operations at Concourse A. maRCh 2013

a serIes oF FIrsts: The first thing that strikes passengers at CA is the hugely enhanced duty free shopping area and dining experiences on offer. Passengers will be forgiven for forgetting that they are at an airport! shoP tILL You droP The Duty Free area spans 8000 square metres; apart from its usual offerings, the CA Duty Free encompasses many new fashion brands making their first foray at the airport. Another first is the opening of an exclusive Duty Free outlet in the Emirates First Class lounge. "As the quality and choice of food and beverage outlets is an increasingly important measure of any airport's overall reputation, we considered it essential to provide the right mix of trusted brands appropriate to Dubai International's diverse passenger base," said Eugene Barry, Senior Vice President Commercial at Dubai Airports. For Giraffe, the award-winning family restaurant from the UK, its outlet at CA is the chain’s first international outlet. Giraffe is open 24/7 and its menu is extensive, featuring food that's created fresh and is reasonably priced. Bringing a Mediterranean flair to Concourse A, in what will be its second airport outlet globally, is Carluccio’s. The outlet has a range of breakfasts, fresh juices and coffee, light lunches, wood-fired pizzas, pastas, desserts, fresh sandwiches, paninis and salads. Carluccio’s also offers the ultimate food-based travel gifts, including ‘regional’ and ‘recipe’ gift packs and exclusive Italian food products. CA keeps the sporting action on at the Heineken® Airport Lounge. The lounge has all the trappings of a traditional bar further enhanced by live screenings from all major sporting events around the world. The lounge at Concourse A is the second at Dubai International and only the second outside North America. To kick off its presence, Heineken is hosting a special offer; customers simply need to purchase Heineken at any participating bar or restaurant in Dubai and in return they receive a voucher redeemable for a complimentary house beverage at the Heineken Airport Lounge at Concourse A. The promotion runs until 31 March. to break records

Words: Penny MccorMick; photography: Gerry o’Leary

ll things considered this is a special year for Dubai Duty Free. Not only did the 2012 sales figures reach a record-breaking US$1.6 billion (Dhs5.9 billion), up 10% on the previous year, but plans for the 30th Anniversary of Dubai Duty Free, while will be in December, are well under way. And with the recent expansion into Concourse A, giving Dubai Duty Free a total retail footprint of 26,000 square metres, and even more outlets and new brands, there is a lot for both retailer and passenger to look forward to. InsIDe THe cOncOurse Let’s look at the facts first. Concourse A has been divided into East and West zones containing 25 retail areas which include a pre-immigration shop for passengers arriving to Dubai. The design of the retail areas was done by RCD, the digital media is installed and managed by Connectiv, and the fit-out was done by the main contractor ALEC with Umdasch as one of the principal sub-contractors. Indeed, one of the first things passengers will notice is the new technology in place. The retail areas now have a brand new Digital Media Network which will centrally control

the 100+ screens designed to be fitted within the retail domain. The network can be used for corporate advertising, promotions of special offers and for communication to passengers on special occasions - for example, Eid or Chinese New Year - using TV style ‘channels’. These screens provide much more flexibility for communication than the traditional light boxes. This, explains DDF’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Colm McLoughlin, was all part of the masterplan. “Planning for the layout and composition of Concourse A has taken several years. We had three main priorities. The first was to ensure that the offer was very much part of the departing passenger’s journey. We worked closely with the master planners for the Concourse nearly 24 months before opening by going through several iterations of the master layout and suggesting changes to the flow. “Achieving the current layout required changes to the location of several mechanical and other services within the building, but the result was a strong central offer in the middle of the departures level that greets the passenger immediately as they step off the escalators or out of the elevators, and then primary and secondary flows to the East and West

ends of the building.” “The second priority was to ensure that all the major categories such as Perfumes, Cosmetics, Liquor, Tobacco, Confectionery, Delicatessen, Gold, Watches, Gifts from Dubai, and Electronics were well represented in terms of merchandise range and availability of product on the shop-floor, and yet that there would be sufficient retail space to significantly enhance the Fashion offer by introducing more brands.” “The third priority was to make the offer as attractive as possible by having strong anchor points at both ends of the shop and integrating new elements such as digital media into the retail design, rather than install them as an after-thought later.” sO MAnY BrAnDs... In what is one of a series of firsts for the retail operation, Dubai Duty Free features a new shop in the Emirates First Class lounge at Concourse A. The First Class shop is 595 square metres in size and features an array of exclusive, high end, luxury products. The right product mix was essential for the first class clientele. Products such as Royal Salute Tribute to Honour – a whisky retailing at US$200,000 – is on display in this lounge, creating what is known as the ‘halo effect’ for the shop. The First Class shop also features special display units from leading luxury brands such as Royal Salute, Johnnie Walker, Chanel and Vertu among others. As for the retail floor itself, George Horan, DDF’s President, gives an overview. “Firstly, the overall design and layout is very spacious with an easy flow pattern, so the customer will immediately feel relaxed and will be able to browse products with ease. The planning of the 8,000 square metres followed from the priorities that were outlined above by Colm, and from our understanding of passengers’ needs for the markets that are served by Emirates from the new Concourse. We also took on board the things we had learnt from Concourse B.

Central retail areas

“The main retail attractions are firstly the strong central offer comprising of Perfumes, Cosmetics, Gifts from Dubai, Gold and Watches, leading to Electronics. This offer, using the large welcome LED screens at the entrance of the retail areas, makes the passengers immediately feel that they are ‘entering’ Dubai Duty Free.” The main retail concourse also features a dedicated M&M’s shop, which occupies 27 square metres close to the Food & Liquor shop, and is destined to keep younger travellers busy and entertained. As, no doubt, will the two Emirates airline merchandising units.

For more sophisticated tastes, explains Horan, “Concourse A features two Liquor & Tobacco shops positioned at either end of the duty free area and each of them contains a built-in cigar room of approximately 45 square metres and designed for cigar connoisseurs. The cigar rooms in Concourse A feature the world’s best known Cuban cigars as well as cigars from other important cigar producing nations such as the Dominican Republic and Honduras. The cigar rooms are stocked with well-known brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo and Romeo Y Julieta from Cuba, as well as Davidoff.” Wines, too, have played an important role in attracting customers into the retail areas; something which Horan and the team acknowledged in the planning process. “In the recent past we have seen a growing interest from Chinese customers looking for high-end wines. As Concourse A features two Liquor & Tobacco shops at either end of the Concourse, we are able to carry an extensive range of wines in these areas. In the West shop at Concourse A the wine rack contains a built-in wine cooler featuring top-end wines. We sell wines ranging from a regular bottle of an Australian Shiraz to the world-renowned Chateau Lafitte. Wine connoisseurs can find anything ranging from the basic wines to the top end brands at Concourse A and we have wine experts on hand to assist with their choices.” To fit into the exclusive environment of the Emirates First Class lounge in Concourse A, the rare collection of Dalmore’s whiskies are being retailed for discerning travellers. Known as The Dalmore Constellation Collection, the whiskies were produced at the Highland distillery between the years 1964 and 1992 and the exclusive retail environment in Concourse A provides the perfect backdrop for this rare collection. The Dalmore Constellation Collection consists of up to 21

individual expressions, with the selection at Concourse A containing seven different expressions, all of which have spent their lives finessing in the finest casks from around the world before being bottled at natural cask strength and at natural colour. Prices range from US$4,537.5 (Dhs16,335) for a bottle of Vintage 1989 up to US$28,875(Dhs103,950) for a bottle of the Vintage 1966. Meanwhile the Gifts from Dubai retail area takes centre stage at the central side of the main walkway in Concourse A, creating a ‘sense of place’. Featuring a wide range of souvenirs, from confectionary to ornaments, the Gifts from Dubai shop is styled in an Arabian theme and covers 376 square metres. Considering the demand from passengers, special emphasis was placed on having two pharmacies at either end of the concourse while there are two ‘At Your Service’ shops for those passengers looking for smaller items such as newspapers, water and snacks. “The third major attraction in Concourse A is the Fashion offer that has been enhanced and expanded,” says Horan, “and which will feature a range of high-end brands, to be announced at a later date. For now, there is an extended retail area for Salvatore Ferragamo, where we have been able to develop the existing range to include daywear. The Fashion zone is opposite the Perfumes and Cosmetics offer. And in all the areas the quality of lighting, flooring and fit-out makes the overall experience extremely attractive to the passengers.” Along with all the regular brands featured at Dubai Duty Free a number of new brands have been introduced including SKII, Bobbi Brown, Coach, Michael Kors, Chaumet and Panerai to name a few. Dubai Duty Free is not only proactive but reactive to customer needs and that is therefore reflected in the products it sells. Explains McLoughlin, “By the very nature of our business, where there are always going to be fads and fashions that change, we have to always stay ahead of the game when it comes to innovations in travel retail. We also have to be very mindful of the downtown competition and as you know, in Dubai the downtown retail offer is fantastic. So, we have to offer value for money, which is one of our founding principles and one that we work hard to adhere to.”

By the very nature of our business, we have to always stay ahead of the game when it comes to innovations in travel retail. We have to offer value for money, which is one of our founding principles and one that we work hard to adhere to.” – DDF’s executive Vice-chairman, colm McLoughlin

WIreD up Dubai Duty Free has placed great emphasis on technology and the Electronics Shop is housed in a 332-square metre space with smartphones, tablets and music devices such as iPods. The space also features a large interactive area where the customer can touch and feel the latest products. Such expansion of course necessitates changes behind the scenes too. “With the opening of Concourse A, our retail footprint at Dubai International Airport grew to 26,000 square metres and in order to ensure that the shelves are stocked and that all of the logistics are met, we have expanded the automated capacity of our warehouse/distribution Centre in Ramoul,” explains McLoughlin. “This can now store 20,000 pallets and 27,000 totes within the automated system (automation has increased from 70% to 90% since the summer of 2012). This helps us to receive and issue the merchandise for the full operation every day, and also helps us to meet the demand caused by fragmentation of the retail areas which are spread across all three Terminals. Of course staffing is of prime importance. “In line with the growth of the retail operation, our staffing levels have grown significantly in the past year. Our staff numbers grew from 4,000 in January 2011 to 5,670 at present,” says McLoughlin. Digital Media screen

“All of the new staff undergo an induction and training period and we have had an average of 60 new recruits starting with us each week for the past several months. The HR department has done a great job in rising to the challenge and our staffing levels now consist of 49 nationalities with the top nationality being Filipino, followed by Indian, followed by Chinese. With the growing importance of the Chinese passenger, we have increased the recruitment of Chinese staff to 573 at present. Central to Dubai Duty Free’s success is undoubtedly its customer service. Says McLoughlin, “To ensure that all of our staff deliver a first class service, we have a number of initiatives in place, including our Gotcha! programme. This was launched in 2011 and sets out to identify and reward our staff who have been seen providing a high level of service and going out of their way to help customers in their purchases. At the end of the day, a high level of customer service can in turn increase our sales. It is also important that our retail area is welcoming and easy to navigate. I think that this is very evident in Concourse A where we have taken on board some of the challenges we had in Concourse B and adapted the retail offer accordingly.” There’s no doubt that the new Concourse will impact on their impressive annual sales figures. McLoughlin notes, “In the past 29 years, we have doubled our sales figures six times with overall sales growing by 7,200% while traffic figures in the same period grew by 1,317%. Another interesting metric is in the analysis of our sales per square metre. In 2011, Dubai Duty Free sold approximately US$80,832 per square metre, compared to the global average of annual sales per square metre of US$34,392.” It seems that in the new Concourse A Dubai Duty Free has got the mix just right. To summarise, McLoughlin says, “For Dubai Duty Free, the layout and overall customer experience has always been focused on providing an attractive, customer-friendly and convenient shopping experience. We have tried to improve on this with every new retail development and in Concourse A, I think that we have achieved a great deal.” We’re sure passengers will agree too.

freighT Traffic rises aT dubai world ceNTral dubai World Central, dubai's second airport handled 219,092 tonnes of air freight during its second full calendar year of operations, an increase of 144 per cent over 2011. in 2012 dubai World Central’s average monthly air cargo volumes totalled 18,258 tonnes compared to 7,477 tonnes recorded during the airport’s first full year of operations in 2011. Cargo transit traffic comprised 44,052 tonnes or 20 per cent of volumes. “Less than three years after its opening dubai World Central is fast emerging as a significant cargo airport in the region,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO, dubai airports. “That emergence is set to continue as airlines take advantage of the airport’s facilities, road feeder service to dubai international and bonded link to the Jebel ali port.” The impressive figures point to the rising number of cargo charter operations – more than 30 airlines operating

predominantly as charter operations – as well as the flexibility at dubai World Central. The latter continues to attract new cargo operators and in 2012 added Zetavia, abakan aiva, Silk Way airlines, Khalton air, Sakavia Services, iran aseman, Vision air and Saudi arabian. indeed, projected figures for cargo indicate that cargo volumes will top three million tonnes by 2015. General aviation traffic is also expected to pick up in 2013 with the recent opening of the new al Majlis facility. Operated in partnership with private aviation groups Execujet and Jet aviation and contained within the passenger terminal building, al Majlis offers an alternative to business travellers by providing greater flexibility in terms of general aviation departures and arrival slots. its proximity to the fast-growing business area of ‘new’ dubai is an added attraction. The new al Majlis has six lounges capable of accommodating 80,000 ViP passengers a year.

trAvel tiP iP If you’re late to the airport and the check-in agent says that you’ve missed the 30-minute cut-off, don’t stress. Instead, ask for a gate pass. If you can get to the gate within 15 minutes of take-off, the gate person will often get you on the flight. Of course, check in before you get to the airport, so that you already have your boarding pass.

Fashion Pioneer In transit with Bong Guerrero, CEO of Fashion Forward & Managing Partner of Brag marketing agency. words Penny MccorMick

D

escribing himself as an ‘eventologist’, Bong Guerrero’s two-decade career in Dubai has seen him produce and organise parties for international companies such as Google, Microsoft, Mercedes Benz and Fendi as well as working as a sponsor for Dubai International Film Festival, Art Dubai and in tandem with Dubai Arts & Cultural Authority. However, it was through his fashion show production in the region that his latest venture took off. As Creative Director of Fashion Forward, Guerrero’s goal is to create a platform to showcase regional designers, of which there are many, and to educate as well as exchange ideas to further develop the business infrastructure of the fashion industry in the Middle East. Quite a challenge; but if the impressive line-up of April’s inaugural Fashion Forward event is anything to go by, Guerrero has already succeeded.

What sparked your interest in the regional fashion scene here in Dubai? My first business in Dubai in 1990 was a fashion house catering to the well-heeled ladies of the region. It was considered then to be one of the more prominent ateliers with a customer base of celebrities and royalty. When I changed my career and business focus to event management in 1999, I naturally produced a lot of fashion events between corporate launches and concerts. In April 2013, I will launch Fashion Forward (FFWD), a bi-annual event that aims to be the most definitive fashion platform in the Middle East. It was developed to address a specific need that we identified in the regional market – for a fashion movement or platform that would celebrate regional designers while fostering discussion, debate and development of the fashion industry from a trade perspective.

What can audiences expect from FFWD in April? FFWD will have a lot of fashion excitement. It will showcase couture and prêt collections from established designers in the region. It will be the very first time that these celebrated designers will be showcasing their talent under one roof. Complementing the catwalk calendar, we will host several forums and 90

panel discussions featuring global experts on relevant fashion topics. FFWD will have fashion galleries and installations, a series of pop-up stores, VIP lounges and fashion cafes. It will also have special events and parties with the city’s fashionistas in full attendance.

How many languages do you speak and what’s the best method of learning languages in your opinion? The best way to learn a foreign language is to immerse one’s self in its environment - and of course practice. I used to be conversational in Italian many, many years ago but now can’t even muster a sentence to order my favourite pasta. One day, I hope to do a sabbatical in Naples to pick it up again. I think, speak and express myself in English. When I don’t want anyone to understand my frustration, I sigh in my native tongue, Tagalog. Having lived in melting pot Dubai for over 23 years, I can fake a bit of Hindi and Arabic to my occasional benefit.

What have your world travels taught you? That despite all our obvious differences we are all the same.

How do you explore a new city? Whenever possible, the best way to discover a new city is through its people.

What is the biggest misconception you’ve encountered about Dubai? That Dubai is one huge transit lounge where most foreigners stay for couple of years to make a quick buck. I have many expat friends that have lived and rooted themselves here for decades.

Where are you going on holiday to this year? Mykonos and Barcelona in the summer and I’m thinking Cape Town or Rio for the Christmas holidays.

Are you a big collector of holiday souvenirs and if so, what do you usually bring back home from a new destination? I was never a big fan of holiday souvenirs except in the last five years; I’ve developed an obsession with unique fridge magnets, which I bring back from everywhere I visit.

How do you overcome jet lag? I always write off the first day of my return and sleep it off. On the second day I force myself to get back into my routine of early morning gym before going to the office. Drinking lots of water also helps.

I never leave home without… My smart phone.

Of all the interesting people I’ve met on my travels… I am always fascinated with anyone who has an ordinary, simple life yet everything seems so extraordinary to them. I went to the Seychelles recently and started taking photos of the fishermen’s catch by the beach. Our guide and driver jested that his wife was the best cook in the island. I suggested we cancel our tour and requested home-cooked food in his house. I had the best Creole meal and an amazing time with his wife and kids.

Your favourite escape in Dubai? Camping in the desert is always relaxing and a favourite escape. dv
