Airport of mAss AttrAction More than 70 million passengers used Dubai International (DXB) last year, making the airport the world’s number one airport for international passengers, a position long held by London Heathrow. This is a huge achievement for the emirate and the UAE, yet the focus is now on the next goal: 79 million passengers by the end of 2015. In the coming months expect to see new technologies being deployed to make the airport even more efficient and people-friendly, complemented by new food and beverage concepts and additional duty free shopping opportunities. Later in the year Concourse D is expected to open, further enhancing the airport’s facilities. Meanwhile, Dubai’s 700+ metre-high Burj Khalifa is back in focus, rubbing shoulders with the greatest global icons as one of the most popular backdrops for a ‘selfie’! According to Instagram data, the top 10 most ‘selfied’ architectural backdrops are the Eiffel Tower (Paris), Walt Disney World (Florida), Burj Khalifa, Big Ben (London), the Empire State Building (New York), Sagrada Familia (Barcelona), Disneyland Paris, the Coliseum (Rome), Top of the Rock (New York) and London Bridge. Dubaians are also proud that the recent LiveLeak global ‘drop the wallet’ experiment conducted by Reader’s Digest showed the city to be made up of honest, law abiding people. A wallet was dropped in the city 45 times – and each time the wallet was returned to its owner. As Dubai focuses on becoming one of the smartest cities of the future, attention is also being turned to its humble origins. Areas of the historic Khor Dubai Creekside district are being rejuvenated as part of Dubai’s 2016 bid to win UN World Heritage Site status for the Creek. The 1.5-square kilometre project will include a museum and pedestrianised streets. The goal is to attract 12 million visitors to the heritage area by 2020.

Photo oP The world’s best photographers and instructors will be making headlines at this year’s Gulf Photo Plus 2015 annual event. Literary Greats

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is bringing world-famous authors to Dubai. Fans and authors from around the globe are gathering in Dubai to celebrate the art of writing, promote education and support local talent of all ages at the Emirates airline Festival of Literature. oted the number two festival in the Middle East, the Middle East’s largest celebration of the written and spoken word has something for UAE residents and visitors of all backgrounds and with all interests. “We are thrilled to welcome over 130 of the world’s top authors, speakers and celebrities to Dubai’s shores in March,” said Isobel Abulhoul, CEO of the Emirates Literature Foundation and Festival Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. “This is our seventh year and the programme is spectacular! With over 200 sessions and workshops, there is something for everyone, whether you are entranced by words, pictures or theatre.” This year’s festival will include new features such as the War Horse Concert, featuring Michael Morpurgo reading extracts from the play, and the first-ever appearance 14

in the UAE of the life-size horse puppets, Joey and Topthorn. Festival favourites Desert Stanzas and the Murder Mystery Dinner will return, as well as debates, panel discussions, talks and workshops on a variety of genres. Simultaneous translation between Arabic and English will be available for selected sessions. As Joanne Harris, award-winning author of Chocolat, said of the festival: “We have so much in common, despite our cultural differences. We all love stories. Stories help us keep in touch with our past; our homeland; our feelings; our culture. Stories expand our horizons; show us that dreams can sometimes comes true. Stories teach us how to see the world from different perspectives.” Writing competitions and an inter-school quiz are among the educational highlights, and young people will also have the chance to hear and meet some of their favourite writers. The 2014 Festival welcomed more than 150 writers, thinkers and speakers from 25 countries. More than 30,000 visitors attended the Festival, which featured more than 200 one-off sessions and unique events. Annabel Kantaria and Rachel Hamilton, success stories from the 2013 Montegrappa First Fiction competition, will both be appearing as internationally published authors. Lucinda Martin, runnerup in the 2014 contest, has signed a deal for

her debut novel, Moth and the Nightingale, which will be published in 2016. Dubai Airports will again sponsor the Emirati Writers Strand at the festival. This year Dubai Airports will take their participation a step further with an innovative new competition. Using Twitter, participants from all over the world are invited to express their ‘creative side’ by posting travel related poetry or short story in no more than 120 characters. Participants are asked to include the hashtag #DAlitfest. The competition runs from February 8 to March 7 2014 and the winner will be announced on the final day of the festival. The entries will be displayed daily on a big screen television at the entrance of the food hall at the festival. The winner will be the entry that receives the most retweets or favourites. In line with the digital theme, the winner will receive a Samsung Galaxy tablet. The fan favourite: the Jaguar Style Stakes contests for most creative hat, most fashionable man, woman and couples, and most elegant lady. While the ladies are creating their chapeau strategies and the gents are suiting-up in sophisticated Chanel and bowlers, the world’s top jockeys will be preparing for heated on-track competitions that offer total prize money of US$29.25 million. With the World health Organisation (WhO) reporting that a third of the global population is now overweight, governments are prioritising finding ways to reduce obesity and its associated diseases. Meanwhile, a daily handful of peanuts, a bunch of red grapes or berries and a glass of red wine could be the secret to a better memory and warding off alzheimer’s and other aging diseases. according to research at the Institute of regenerative Medicine in Texas, there is increasing evidence that the antioxidant resveratrol – which is found in the skins of red grapes, raspberries, blueberries and mulberries – could possibly protect our brain cells from aging, as well as improving our mood, learning ability and memory as we age. Czech out PILSEN The Czech Republic’s European Capital of Culture 2015 is hosting over 600 events that explore art and technology. Opening this March, the creative zone DEPO2015 is a new space for creative industries, art and talent development. Art lovers: The West Bohemian Gallery and the Gallery of the City of Pilsen will offer special exhibitions, including ‘Munich – the Shining Metropolis of Art’ with works from the famous Munich painting school (including Wasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Gabriel von Max, Alfons Mucha and Hugo Steiner-Prag). ince 2012 Cyril Zammit has been traveling the world to bringing the world’ best designers to Design Days Dubai and act as an ambassador for the region’s top design talent. Tapped by Benedict Floyd, co-founder of Art Dubai, approached Zammit to after his years of experience handling top cultural affairs all over the globe, including his first job as a cultural diplomat in Prague and in Switzerland working at the Montreux Jazz Festival. This year he continues with its fourth edition (16 – 20 March) with an international line-up of 44 renowned exhibitors, from 20 countries at ‘The Venue’ next to the Burj Khalifa. He generously spoke with us about his favourite places in Dubai, the world, and how travellers can bring home the world’s best design.

What are your tips for first-time visitors to Design Days Dubai? Immerse yourself in the fair. Allow yourself to be surprised, amused and intrigued by the objects. Then stop at the booth and speak with the design gallery representatives. Touch the piece and develop an intimate relationship with the object. Understand how it was created, which material were used and its rarity.

What is your favourite thing to do in Dubai Airport? Arrive early, disappear in the Emirates lounge and use this buffer time to relax before taking off. How do you avoid jetlag? I stay hydrated during airborne and setting my watch to the time of the destination. I then try to focus my brain to the respective time and always keep the window shutter open, darkness = sleep. I act as if was living in my host city. How do you entertain yourself during your flights? I catch up on alternative European movies, mainly French films. I also enjoy watching German, Scandinavian, Italian and Spanish movies. If the flight is

Why will global visitors enjoy Design Days Dubai? The chance to discover design creations from 20 different countries. We will have pieces from Taiwan, Brazil, Jordan, Australia and South Africa. The UAE design scene also has a strong presence this year. What are your tips for bringing design finds home from a trip? Consider shipping a primary concern. Otherwise, nothing should stop you bringing home any piece. Various materials react differently to wrapping sheets, make sure there is no harm in the way it is being wrapped. Insurance is worth the investment.

What is the best place you’ve visited? Travel expands the mind and soul. My favorite city to travel to is Tokyo, up till the past two years, it is my yearly pilgrimage. Tokyo is constantly in motion, through different aspects of life. The simplicity and clean lines aesthetic attracts me tremendously. How are travel and luxury related? Luxury to me is the freedom of movement. The choice to pick up and visit a place. dv March 2015

t’s official: Dubai International (DXB) is the world’s busiest airport. It overtook London Heathrow after a record 70.47 million passengers travelled through it in 2014. Figures from the Dubai Airports’ year-end traffic report show yearly passenger numbers totalled a whopping 70,475,636 – an increase of 6.1 per cent from the 66,431,533 recorded in 2013. Additionally, December 2014 was DXB’s busiest month, with nearly 6.5 million people travelling through the airport in that month alone.

This achievement has been made more remarkable given the short time taken to attain this milestone. Dubai International has surged from being the 30th busiest airport 15 years ago, increasing from just 12.3 million passengers in 2000 to more than 70.4 million in 2014.

“The shared goal is to make Dubai a global centre of aviation and we are nearing that goal thanks to an open skies policy, a friendly business environment, Dubai’s growing attractiveness as a centre for trade, commerce and tourism, growing network connectivity due to the rapid expansion of Emirates and flydubai, and timely investment in aviation infrastructure,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Airports (DA). Dubai Airports is forecasting significant growth in passenger traffic this year, with 79 million travellers expected to pass through Dubai International in 2015. With the current growth rate, analysts expect Dubai International to surpass its 100 millionpassenger target by 2018 – almost two full years before the projected date of 2020.

To accommodate this tremendous growth, Dubai Airports (DA) has implemented a Dhs28.8 billion (US$7.8 billion) Strategic Plan 2020 (SP2020) which maps the expansion of Dubai International. The plan involves the construction of additional terminal space and concourse areas comprising 675,000 additional square metres of floor space – twice the footprint of London Heathrow Terminal 5. The upcoming Concourse D (CD) is a vital part of SP2020. Being custom-built to serve more than a hundred airlines, the 65,000-square metre concourse will accommodate up to 18 million passengers. Touted as DXB’s ‘green’ building, CD is constructed in keeping with Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) principles, its most significant feature being the use of solar panels to provide for the building’s energy requirements. Authorities’ plans are for the emirate of Dubai to become the ultimate global aviation hub, with operations being shared between Dubai International and Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC). With DXB slated to reach maximum capacity by 2020, Dubai’s aviation future lies at DWC. That airport is currently undergoing a US$32 billion expansion, which will enable it to accommodate more than 200 million passengers a year. Anticipated to be the biggest airport project in the world, the expansion will take place in two phases over the next six to eight years. It will take place over two phases, with the first phase – expected to be complete by the mid-2020s – providing annual capacity of 120 million passengers. However, once fully developed, DWC will be the world’s largest global gateway, with capacity for more than 200 million passengers per year, four concourses, 400 aircraft contact stands, five runways capable of simultaneous operation and 14 stations between the terminals and concourses linked by six trains. DWC will also serve as a multi-modal logistics hub for 16 million tonnes of freight each year.

Amidst its vision for DWC to develop into a next-generation airport, Dubai Airports is ensuring that passenger comfort remains at the centre of the entire process. DWC will by adopt the latest innovative technologies, such as biometrics and smart passenger tracking – including iris and palm scans, RFID boarding cards – as well as other innovative methods that will facilitate the seamless flow of passengers through its massive terminals with minimum paper processing. DWC’s compact design incorporates shorter passenger walking distances within the terminal and concourse facilities. Other features include a reduction in processes

for both passengers and baggage, allowing almost uninterrupted flow to aircraft. DWC’s baggage handling system will allow passengers to be separated from their bags as early as possible, complementing this convenience with a personalised collection service upon arrival. Additionally, the six-track train system between the airport’s terminals and concourses will allow arriving and departing passengers to reach their key journey points even more quickly; transfer passengers will be able to move between concourses within set minimum connecting times, and so board onward connections quickly and comfortably.

The chocolate tower was made using 4,200 kilogrammes of chocolate and took 1050 hours of painstaking work to complete. WorlD’s lArgest cAncer AWAreness ribbon Last February, DXB’s air traffic control tower was draped in the world’s largest cancer awareness ribbon as part of a major campaign. The advert is lit up by 183,024 white LEDs and the entire structure weighs 100 kilogrammes. It took a total of 3000 manhours to erect the advert.

UP, UP aND aWaY Passenger and cargo operations soar at al Maktoum International at Dubai World central. DubAi’s AirPort, al Maktoum International at Dubai World central (DWc), recorded record passenger traffic and freight volumes in 2014, according to the year-end traffic report by Dubai airports. DWc welcomed 845,046 passengers in its first full year of passenger operations. During the fourth quarter of last year, just under 111,000 passengers travelled through DWc – contributing strongly to its annual figures. The runway refurbishments carried out at Dubai International (DXB) from May to July last year also helped boost the number of passenger carriers using DWc. “It was a very important year for al Maktoum International at Dubai World central as it played a critical role during the runway refurbishment programme at Dubai International – by accommodating a substantial volume of passenger traffic that was diverted from the main hub during the course of the project,” said Paul Griffiths, cEO of Dubai airports. Similarly, freight volumes at DWc surged 262.5 per cent to 758,371 tonnes in 2014 – compared to 209,209 tonnes in 2013. The shift of all freighter operations from DXB

to DWc in May 2014 was responsible for the increase. The airport registered robust growth in the fourth quarter, with cargo volumes reaching 238,520 tonnes, up 278.4% compared to the 63,028 tonnes recorded during the same period in 2013. The increased activity in passenger and freight operations at DWc propelled the number of annual aircraft movements to 47,655 – up by 91.6% compared to 24,871 in 2013. The airport recorded 11,687 aircraft movements during the fourth quarter, up 47% compared to 7,948 during the corresponding period in 2013. “The scale of DWc’s operations and the significance of its role – especially as a main hub for pure cargo operations – will only continue to grow in 2015, as airlines take advantage of the airport’s facilities, road feeder service to DXB and bonded link to the Jebel ali port,” added Griffiths.

Some 5211 Indian women danced their way in to the record books recently, by performing the world’s largest traditional Kaikottikali dance. Choreographed by Jitha Binoy, the women mesmerised an audience of more than 55,000 as they swirled and swayed in sync, performing the most popular of South Indian Hindu dances during the Thanima Arts Festival, held in Irinjalakuda in Kerala.
