WINNING NUMBErS Dubai continues to triumph as she continues on the path to securing a reputation as a globally recognised world-class city. The past month has seen the emirate notch up a few more accolades, starting with the news that Dubai International is now the world’s second busiest airport in terms of international passengers, pipping Charles de Galle to the prized position. Some 16.49 million international passengers used the airport during the first three months of 2013. A short time later it was revealed that Dubai International is now considered by the OAG FACTS (Frequency and Capacity Trend Statistics) to be the fastest-growing airport in the world, a position held by Turkey’s Ataturk airport in 2012. The achievement was accompanied by news that Dubai World Central (DWC), located not far from the Dubai World Expo 2020 site, is expected to welcome its first passengers during the last quarter of this year. DWC is to be initially served by two low-cost carriers. Meanwhile, a lobby group are hoping to win UNESCO World Heritage status for Dubai Creek – the waterway that is inextricably linked with the rapid transformation of the once sleepy fishing town to a major city. Tourists continue to flock to our shores to enjoy the best of Dubai. The Downtown Dubai development appears to have even surpassed the estimated 56 million that visit New York City annually. The area, created to support the world-tallest 700-plus metre-high Burj Khalifa mega tower, recorded some 65 million visitors in 2012 – a 20 per cent increase over the previous year. Dubai Duty Free, one of the leading airport retailers in the world continues to make sales records, achieving some Dhs1.6 billion (US$438 million) during the first quarter of 2013 - a 12% increase over the same period last year. According to statistics, 49 per cent of departing passengers shop in Dubai Duty Free, compared to just nine per cent in Charles De Galle airport. Meanwhile, the first edition of the Gitex Spring Shopper broke records of its own, welcoming over 3,500 visitors within its first hour. According to the organisers, who have over 34 years’ experience organising consumer and trade shows here, this was the biggest launch event in the history of the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). The main Gitex show – the region’s largest technology retail show – will be held from 5 to 12 October at DWTC. he tourism industry has emerged as one of the megaindustries of this century and has become a key factor towards initiating income and driving a country’s economy forward. The unprecedented growth of the tourism sector in the Middle East alone is testament to this shift in economic focus. In the UAE, tourism receipts are forecast to rise by 67% over the next few years while its hospitality market is likely to reach US$7.5 billion by 2016. Looking longer term, a recent Dubai Chamber study puts UAE tourism sector growth at 6.5% per annum between 2011 and 2021, with visitors from the Middle East, Europe and Asia Pacific as the key source markets. Regionally, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and Lebanon have also earmarked millions of dollars for the expansion and development of their tourism sectors. At a time like this, the 20th edition of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), running from 6 to 9 May 2013, is of great significance to the region and the world. Being held at the Dubai International Convention

and Exhibition Centre, the line-up for this year’s Arabian Travel Market will once again bring together the UNWTO regional tourism ministers’ conference and the WTM Vision forum, which will focus on Middle East travel trends and the online travel market. The special UNWTO forum, to be held under the theme ‘Aviation and Tourism Policies: Balancing the Benefits’, will bring regional airlines, tourism leaders and the UNWTO together to discuss the role of the industry in driving Middle East tourism growth, and the regional influence on its tourism strategies and policy. The theme is particularly relevant and timely, as IATA reports indicate that the Middle East will handle 400 million air travellers by 2020 as a number of new state-of-the-art airports come on line, major carriers expand their route networks, and aircraft orders from the Gulf region add new capacity. Air travel will be one of the eight major vertical sectors during the weeklong event, alongside budget travel, careers, health and wellbeing, luxury, shopping, sports, and cruise and waterbased travel. Running the entire week, the popular Seminar Theatre programme will address industry hot topics from developments in the aviation sector and inbound and outbound trends, as well as the development of tourism over the last 20 years of ATM. 2013 also marks the launch of the Digital and Technology Day which will focus on online travel developments and showcase headline speakers from across the industry.

This year’s Travel Technology Theatre will be sponsored by internet giant Google who will be using the forum to share insights of the travel industry and technology under the umbrella theme of ‘Think Travel’. “This is a first for ATM and the regional travel and tourism community. Our partnership with Google will not only deliver up-to-the-minute industry data, but will showcase how technology plays a role in the travel industry - whether it’s searching for ideas or booking vacations or sharing their experience through social platforms,” said Mark Walsh, Portfolio Director, Reed Travel Exhibitions. The dedicated Travel Technology Theatre was introduced in 2012 in response to the huge demand for technology-related content. Targeting all ATM attendees, the programme covers online travel trends, new developments in social media and advances in travel technology. This year New York State, Pakistan and the Philippines have been nominated for the New Frontiers Award, which recognises outstanding contributions to tourism development in the face of overwhelming adversity. The winner will be revealed at a special session during the ATM. Wrapping up the week will be the Industry Careers Day. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, the 2012 edition of the Middle East’s leading travel exhibition showcased 2,436 exhibitors and attracted more than 23,000 attendees. With this year’s bigger and better line-up, those figures are just set to rise. dv

THE AIRPORT SHOW Co-located with the ATM is the Airport Show 2013, the Middle East’s largest event dedicated to airport technologies, operations and infrastructure. This year’s event, running from 6 to 8 May, will showcase the latest technologies in the airports industry, and attract airport and aviation professionals from around the world. A two-day international conference titled Global Airport Leaders’ Forum, will also take place along the sidelines of the show, offering a platform to address global challenges and encourage cross-border partnerships and cooperation. Airport Show 2013 assumes greater significance with a large number of debuting and returning exhibitors, new national pavilions and a dedicated Airport Passenger Experience (APE) area, showcasing the latest cutting-edge technologies from around the world. As the region’s aviation sector continues to grow, this year’s Airport Show will build on the success of the last edition and the continued multi-billion dollar investments across the regional airports sector. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, the Airport Show is supported by leading international industry associations and local government authorities.

s part of an overall strategy to cater for the growth of the budget carriers, especially flydubai, and the booming tourism sector in general, Dubai Airports has launched a phased expansion and refurbishment plan that will see Terminal 2’s footprint double in size and increase annual passenger capacity to 10-million passengers. At present more than 50 airlines including African Express Airways, Iran Asseman Airlines, Iraqi Airways, Ariana Afghan Airlines, Kish Air, Qeshm Air and Jubba Airways LTD operate out of this terminal. The first phase of the project, expected to be completed imminently, will see the construction of a new departure hall. Once phase 1 has been completed, the refurbishment of the existing departures hall and arrival area will begin. Once the entire revamp is completed towards the end of next year, Terminal 2 will have 52 check-in counters, 12 gates, a new, more efficient baggage handling system and a greater selection of food & beverage outlets in a more spacious and airy environment. The new terminal will also include a new Marhaba lounge for the first time.

A notable highlight of the expansion works at Terminal 2, will be the additional space for Dubai Duty Free which will occupy 1,478 square metres of prime retail space at the terminal. New shops retailing duty free favourites such as Perfumes and Cosmetics, Liquor, Tobacco and Confectionery will create a striking ambience at the terminal. The hugely popular ‘Gifts from Dubai’ category will take centre stage with its strategic location at the entrance of the retail area. The first phase of the Duty Free expansion has already been completed and is set to be followed by a gradual opening of the second and final phase of the shops later this year. Named the Best Airport Retailer and also one of the single largest retail operations in the world, Dubai Duty Free recently announced that its sales from Terminal 2 recorded an impressive 22 percent growth for the first quarter of 2013. 22

FLY DUBAI: FORGING NEW GROUNDS The fastest growing start-up airline in the world and the second largest airline operating out of Dubai International, flydubai is playing an increasingly prominent role in the emirate’s aviation sector. Within three years of operations, the low cost carrier acknowledged profitability; in the past two years it has more than doubled the number of destinations it flies to, from 25 to 52 - a rate of more than one new destination per month, increased its weekly flights to more than 1,000 and has carried 10.4 million passengers since its launch. The Terminal 2-based airline’s operational route network covers the Middle East, Africa, Subcontinent, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe, targeting secondary airports within five hours flying time of its Dubai base.

UNPRECDENTED GROWTH flydubai reported its first net profit of Dh151.9 million ($41.3m) for last year on revenue of Dh2.8 billion. This was accompanied by the announcement that the company would be seeking to more than double its fleet of aircraft this year. The carrier already has a fleet of 28 Boeing 737 aircraft, but is understood to be talking to both Boeing and Airbus for its new order. The airline already has an order in place for 50 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, all to be delivered by 2016. During this fiscal year, six more aircraft will be added to its fleet. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, commented: “Launched to support Dubai’s thriving commercial and tourism sectors, flydubai’s ambition and success embody the spirit of the city it represents. In its short history, flydubai has firmly established its place in the region. It has opened up new markets, contributed to increased tourism in Dubai and made a major contribution to the growth and connectivity of Dubai’s aviation hub.” At the core of flydubai’s success story lays its ability to meet the varying needs of its business and tourism passengers. Since June 2009, it has experienced phenomenal growth in passenger numbers. In 2012 alone, the airline carried 5.1 million passengers. In January 2013, latest figures from Dubai International Airport revealed that passenger traffic from the CIS and CEE markets in 2012 surged by 285% compared to 2011 while the number of flights increased by 114% over the same

period in large part due to flydubai’s on-going expansion in this region. flydubai’s GCC network is also the largest of all Middle Eastern carriers, with 265 flights per week to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In 2012, the airline recorded 65% growth in passenger numbers from the GCC compared to 2011, and a 36% growth in the number of flights over the same period. Since its launch, the airline has increased accessibility to and from Dubai, launching 31 routes that either did not previously have direct links with Dubai or were not served by an UAE national carrier from Dubai.

New Routes 2013 is going to be a remarkable year for flydubai in terms of opening new destinations. By the end of 2013, the low-cost carrier will touch more than 60 destinations. At the beginning of the year, Malé in the Maldives; Ha’il in Saudi Arabia; Juba, the capital city of South Sudan, Sialkot and Multan in Pakistan joined flydubai’s network. In May, the carrier will start flying to Salalah in Oman as well as Sri Lanka’s newly opened Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. 2013 will also see the carrier double its network in Russia and add additional services in Ukraine. In Russia, flydubai will launch flights to Mineralnye Vody, followed by Rostov-on-Don, Volgograd and Krasnodar becoming the only carrier to offer year-round direct scheduled services to these cities. The route map in Ukraine will also expand to include the only direct services from Dubai to the Black Sea resort of Odessa as well as Dnepropetrovsk. These additional operations will bring flydubai’s network to 18 points in the CIS region – more than any other Middle East carrier. When the Dubai Government announced flydubai’s launch in March 2008, the vision for the airline was to provide a low-cost alternative on already popular routes from Dubai, as well as open up destinations that were underserved by direct air links to the UAE, thereby boosting trade and tourism. With a committed leadership, sustainable business model and a well-defined strategy for growth, flydubai has well lived up to these goals and its outlook for 2013 and beyond is definitely a promising one. The Paramount Hospitality Group is collaborating with Dubai’s Damac properties to open a fabulous new 540-room hotel as part of Damac’s new 250-metre tall four-tower complex located in the vicinity of the iconic Burj Khalifa. The 101-year-old film company behind great Hollywood blockbuster movies such as The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Titanic is said to be conceiving the launch of every new property in the manner of a major film release. The Dubai property is part of Damac Towers by Paramount – a US$1 billion development – and expected to open in 2015, soon after which another is to open in China. Three of the four towers will include a total of 1400 Damac Maison-Paramount serviced apartments, which are expected to attract large numbers of regional and global investors. David Rockwell has been consulting with Paramount on the interior concept of the hotel, which is to have a unique Californian style. DUBAI WORLD CENTRAL TO LAUNCH PASSENGER OPERATIONS IN OCTOBER dubai World Central will open its doors to passengers on 27 October 2013 with launch carriers nasair and Wizz air commencing operations into dubai’s second airport. Saudi-based carrier nasair plans to operate over 50 flights per week between dubai and a number of destinations in Saudi arabia while lowcost carrier Wizz air will provide non-stop services linking dubai World Central to Central and Eastern Europe. Construction of dubai World Central’s passenger terminal building was completed in 2012. upon opening, the new facility will offer full retail as well as food and beverage amenities. it is serviced by one a380-capable runway, 64 remote aircraft stands and has capacity for up to 7 million passengers per year. The terminal will undergo a full testing and trial programme over the coming months to ensure a seamless opening. dubai World Central first opened for cargo operations in June 2010, followed by general aviation operations in 2011. upon completion, dubai World Central will become the world’s largest airport with five runways and an ultimate capacity of 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per annum. “a new era in dubai’s already proud aviation story is set to begin,” said dubai airports CEO Paul Griffiths. “The introduction of passenger services from dubai World Central is the first step

BUMPER FIRST QUARTER FOR DUBAI DUTY FREE if the beginning of the year is anything to go by, 2013 signals excellent prospects for the airport retailer’s 30th year of business. dubai duty Free (ddF) sales reached dhs1.6 billion (uS$438 million) in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 12% over the same period last year. Sales from Terminal 3, the biggest in terms of cumulative sales for ddF, rose by 19%. The average spend of passengers at Terminal 1 accounted for 31% of sales while Terminal 2 saw an impressive rise of sales by 22% in the first quarter. Liquor, perfumes and gold held on to the top three spots category-wise in the first quarter of the year, followed by confectionery, electronics, cosmetics and watches. Commenting on the sales so far this year, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of dubai duty Free said: “We have had a very good start to the year and no doubt the opening of Concourse a has contributed to this. The new facility has been extremely well received by passengers and it has enabled us to introduce a number of firsts, including a retail offer in the Emirates First Class lounge in Concourse a, which is doing very well. Don’t sit still! Though only about 1 in 4,500 airplane passengers develop a blood clot you should still make every effort to move around on the plane, whether it is just standing in the aisle or by taking a walk to the toilet. Have a layover? Instead of sitting, make sure to walk around the airport.

Do stay germ-free. Bring disinfecting wipes with you and carry antibacterial or paper soap for occasions when a public restroom is out of soap. Most importantly, stick to your vitamin regimen and make sure to get plenty of vitamin C!

Don’t forget to hydrate. Due to low humidity on planes, many of us can find ourselves feeling thirstier than ever. Don’t want to pay for water at the airport? Bring an empty bottle in your carry on to fill at a water fountain and carry on the plane. Lucky enough to be flying an airline with complimentary beverage services? Opt for water.

Don’t rely on everything going to plan. If you are on medication for an existing condition, take enough for your whole trip and any unexpected delays.

Do snack smart. While at an airport you’ll roll past countless fast food restaurants. Though these seem like a convenient option, they’re not always the healthiest. Stick to something simple (like a kid’s meal) and whatever you do, don’t supersize.

Do get vaccinated! Visit your GP as soon as you know you are travelling to exotic locations to check if you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures, such as malaria tablets etc.

Don’t neglect your travel insurance. Make sure you know when it expires and read the small print or you could face a huge medical bill if you fall ill and need treatment. Carry a doctor’s letter and a copy of any prescriptions, if you have a pre-existing condition.

Do find out important numbers – such as the local emergency services numbers and the number of the local hospital. Learn key words and phrases in the local language for your condition, medication and emergency help.

Style diva With styling for The BRIT Awards, The Grammys and The Dubai Film Festival under her belt, stylist Kelly Lundberg, who recently conducted style workshops for Harvey Nichols in Dubai, is constantly travelling around the world’s fashion capitals to get the best for her clients. She shares a few of her style and travel tips with dv.

What are your absolute must-haves when you travel?

ulti award winning, personal stylist, speaker and author, Kelly Lundberg has been giving sartorial inspiration to the fashion conscious for over fifteen years. What started off with at-home wardrobe consultations and shopping sessions has grown into an international style forum and boutique for both men and women.

I am a massive fan of clutches and use them to give any outfit, from casual shorts to a slinky evening number, the wow factor. I always have a few pairs of lashes with me; my current favourites are Eyelure style number 110. Moisturiser is another travel essential. Of course you can’t forget the iPad!

Are you a big collector of travel souvenirs? Generally speaking, no. But I do pick up a fridge magnet from each place I visit as they are a small and fun reminder of my travels.

How has personal styling impacted the way people see themselves and others? People often underestimate the power of clothing and how it makes you feel. Personal style has a huge impact on our self -perception and greatly affects the way we form an opinion of someone else. A change in style gives people new purpose, transforms their body language and you can physically see them glow. Renewed confidence spills over into all aspects of life.

What was lacking in the market here that inspired you to set up your own business? In the early 2000s, while there were a few people interested in fashion, there were no established businesses specialising in styling services and shopping advice. I wanted to create a company offering consistent service at great value for money, teaching clients how to shop, maximise their style potential and be inspired about clothing. My company StyleMeDivine is now about to become a franchise globally and I am very excited to take our success to a wider clientele.

What are the basic tips of styling that everyone can follow? It is essential to feel good in what you are wearing. I always suggest having a smaller wardrobe consisting of pieces you love and enjoy wearing rather than a larger one with many pieces that don’t look or feel good. Every time you try on something consider why you like it. Is it the colour, the cut or perhaps the fabric? Understanding why something works will make you a more efficient shopper and help create a capsule wardrobe of quality, wearable outfits. 66

Do you travel light? Yes much lighter than my husband! I use our ‘Divine Travel Check List’ that allows you to plan each day you are away. I always pop in a couple of extra outfits but by preplanning I always take less than I otherwise would.

How do you overcome jetlag? Do you travel a lot for your business? Yes, this is definitely one of the perks of the job! Twice a year, I offer an international styling experience. In 2011, I was in New York with a client; in January I was in London shopping for a number of different clients. The next dates are booked for another London experience to buy for AW13/14.

Where was your last holiday? It was a childhood dream fulfilled last month when my husband took us away for our anniversary. We went to Lapland in the Artic Circle to go in search of the Northern Lights, far from glamorous when the temperatures plummeted to -29 degrees, but it was an unforgetable experience.

How do you explore a new city? Wherever possible, I research before I go by downloading a LUXE guide to the destination - if there is one. I also check out a hotel’s Facebook page for tips or hints on what to do whilst we are there. Ultimately, word of mouth is the best way to get inside information on a new city and I love visiting places that have been recommended by friends or family.

As ex-crew I have had many years of dealing with jetlag. I always get into the local time as soon as I land and stay awake until it’s time to sleep there. Adjusting to local time quickly is the best way to beat jetlag.

What is the biggest misconception you've encountered about Dubai? Many people who have never been to Dubai think we are restricted in what we can wear, and as a result the population in general is deeply unfashionable. In reality, Dubai is starting to make its mark on the global fashion circuit and some of the most fashionable trends can be found year-round in our malls and on our streets. Recently we have seen the rise of some talented Emirati designers showcasing collections on global catwalks. Designers from all over the world have chosen to open boutiques here.

Your favourite place to hang out in Dubai? Riva is walking distance; I love the view and they serve a divine pizza. If there is a group of us (especially with children) the Irish village ticks all the right boxes; unpretentious and relaxing, it is the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. dv
