CAPITAl gAINS Recently nominated as ‘World Festival and Event City 2012’ by the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), Dubai’s enviable tourist destination kudos just keeps growing. In the first half of this year some five million tourists have already holidayed here, about 10 per cent more than during the same period in 2011. And Dubai is gearing up to welcome even more visitors over the next few months. According to tourism officials over 19 million guest nights were recorded in the first half of the year – a growth of 20 per cent – sending hotel and hotel apartment revenues soaring over 22 per cent to Dhs 9.7 billion (US$ 2.64 billion). Over recent months a number of new hotels, including the 5-star Dubai Duty Free owned Jumeirah Creekside, have opened, as have new beach resorts like Meydan Beach in the JBR area – contributing to the success of the many tourist attractions the growing metropolis offers. Meanwhile, a number of new projects on the radar, including the region’s first Crocodile Park at the new Dubai Zoo, the Designer Outlet Shopping Village and the new Four Seasons Hotel on Jumeirah Beach, are expected to enhance the city’s offering. With the economic upturn, real estate prices on the rise and an influx of new residents, Dubai appears to be on the crest of another boom. Foreign investment is flowing into the country again, with over Dhs 22 billion (US$ 5.9 billion) having been injected into the real estate market alone during the first half of 2012. Major commercial deals are said to have been made in DIFC, TECOM and the Downtown area, providing yet another indicator that the UAE economy is back on track. Excitement is already mounting for the UAE’s National Day on 2 December, following the announcement that the National Day Festival will actually kick off on 24 November. Charity News YoGATHoN Fitness First Middle East hosted its annual charity challenge, the Yogathon in October with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of healthy living, and inspiring residents to contribute to the dubai autism Centre. Held at burj Park, the Yogathon was led by yoga manager Pewee Sanchez as well as a number of veteran yoga instructors from balance Wellness 360 and Fitness First, who invited members of the public to complete 108 sun salutations within three hours. This sequence of movements relaxes the body, mind and breathing rhythms for improved health. CARING IS SHARING The uaE donated dhs7.74 billion in foreign aid to 128 countries last year, almost three times the amount granted the previous year. according to the uaE Foreign aid Report 2011, the uaE also committed to provide aid assistance of dhs674.9 million in 2011. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, the Ruler’s representative in the western region and president of the foreign aid office, praised the efforts made by uaE donor organisations to provide shelter, food and education to orphaned and deprived children. among the countries that received the most aid were Oman with dhs3.68 billion, Jordan with dhs757.5 million and Kazakhstan with dhs315.9 million. The uaE Government was the largest donor, giving dhs5.97 billion, more than 77 percent of the total aid, followed by the abu dhabi Fund for development (adFd), which disbursed dhs782.3 million. apart from financial assistance, the uaE also sent relief teams to assist those displaced by fighting in Libya, the victims of the famine in the Horn of africa and thousands affected by flooding in Pakistan. The report also covers the programmes of assistance for orphans and the charitable programmes of several donors which support religious and cultural ties.
Breast cancer on ice This month lend some support to the multinational uaE-based team of 12 breast cancers survivors who have been practicing cold-weather trekking techniques at Ski dubai in preparation for their pioneering expedition to antarctica. The team will be at the most southerly place in the world (ushuaia) on the 2 december, uaE National day and look forward to flying their respective country flags beside the uaE flag to celebrate National day before beginning their 10 day floating expedition aboard the purpose built ice vessel M/V Plancius. The expedition is the first of its kind and represents an active campaign to highlight the uaE as an emerging leader in the field of women’s health and personal leadership as well as reinforce the strength and spirit of women. The initiative is aimed at encouraging more women to step out of their comfort zone and take charge of their health by following in the footsteps of the team of breast cancer survivors who have signed up as roving ambassadors for breast cancer awareness, education and prevention. Racing tips Racing at Meydan will begin on 8 November, with a total of nine additional fixtures dates held before and intermixed with the hugely popular and highly anticipated dubai World Cup Carnival (dWCC). The 2013 dWCC, beginning 10 January, will once again attract the greatest names in racing and the sport’s most-talented runners, as prize money of uS$37.36 million will be offered during the schedule of 11 fixtures. Meanwhile the dubai World Cup will be held on 30 March and will feature an impressive nine group races. This will mark the second year that the dubai World Cup will offer nine races. The dubai Gold Cup joined the prestigious night of racing in 2012. The list of Group races will include: ‘the world’s richest race,’ the Group 1 uS$10 million dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates airline. The success of the dWCC has brought international prominence to racing in dubai and the uaE.

Dubai “World Festival and Event City 2012” The international Festivals and Events association (iFEa) has crowned dubai as “iFEa World Festival and Event City 2012”. This is the second time dubai has won the award that is expected to boost its Expo 2020 bid. Representatives from the dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (dEPE) received the award on behalf of dubai at a ceremony held in denver, Colorado, uSa. Laila Suhail, CEO of the dEPE, said: “The iFEa World Festival and Event City award is a milestone in the evolution of dubai’s events and festivals sector and the dEPE is truly honoured to receive the award on behalf of dubai. “Whether it is the annual anticipation created by the dubai Shopping Festival or the finery and finesse of the world’s richest horse race at the dubai World Cup; the cultural capital created through the dubai international Film Festival, art dubai and Emirates airline Festival of Literature; or the spectacle of the world’s tallest building burj Khalifa illuminated with fireworks each New Year’s Eve; the city has staked its claim not just as the regional leader in events but as a true global contender and ‘must visit’ destination for people from all corners of the globe.”

Croc Alert Not so much an amusement park but an educational facility is how dubai Municipality has described their plans to open a new Crocodile Park in 2013. With up to 40 crocodiles planned for the park, all coming from Egypt and with experience of living in arid temperatures, the crocodile park is to be located opposite Mushrif Park. This exciting venture comes hot on the heels of the announcement of a further Safari Park in al Warqa. The latter will be used to relocate hundreds of animals, birds and other creatures living in enclosures in the city’s 45 year old dubai Zoo. both are sure to be magnets for animal enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Golfing greats after the thrilling climax of the recent Ryder Cup comes the dP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Now in its 43rd year, the Emirates airline dubai Rugby Sevens comprises over 1,750 players, 50,000 spectators and takes place from 29th November to 1st december. Officially it’s the second round of the nineleg international Rugby board Sevens World Series, but for visitors and residents alike, it’s also about sporting expertise, family fun and international camaraderie. words Penny mccormick
O
riginating in Melrose, Scotland, the game of Rugby Sevens is popular at all levels, so much so that in fact Sevens is now recognised as an Olympic sport and will make its debut in the 2016 Summer Olympics. As a variant of rugby union, teams are made up of seven players instead of the usual 15, with shorter matches another key feature. In Dubai, what began over 40 years ago with a small band of British expatriates has grown into one of the premier Rugby Sevens events around the world. The tournament experienced tremendous growth in the 1970s with new innovations appearing year by year. The first matches to be played on grass took place in 1995 and this was followed a year later by Dubai hosting a qualifying round of the World Cup Sevens. By 2006, with a full venue capacity of 32,000 at the old Al Awir venue (the Dubai Exiles training ground), the tournament had officially tripled in size since 2001. This rapid expansion continued from there, with the 2008 move to Emirates’ purpose-built venue on Al Ain Road. The Emirates Sevens stadium features a permanent grandstand with 5,000 seats while temporary stands are erected around this permanent 22

The remaining four rugby pitches are located close to an 80-metre long clubhouse that houses the offices of the UAERA Rugby Union - the governing body of rugby in the region. Sevens tournaments are traditionally known for having a more relaxed atmosphere than fifteen-a-side games, and are often known as “festivals”. The Dubai Sevens is no exception, with the Rugby Rock concert in the Rugby Village an eagerly anticipated end-oftournament celebration. The tournament has been voted Dubai’s ‘Favourite Sporting Event’ at the What’s On Awards on eight occasions (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008, 2009, 2010). as its aims demonstrate, Expo 2015 is dedicated to food safety, security and quality and is intended to stimulate regional and national economies as well as showcase italy’s rich heritage when it comes to food production and diversity. words Penny mccormick

talian food is loved the world over and Italians are known for their passionate approach to the quality and taste of their regional cuisine and produce as well as the country’s biodiversity and the health of its population. Indeed, the Italian food industry is the nation’s second largest and includes no fewer than 36,000 family firms and medium sized companies, half a million workers and an annual turnover of 100billion euros. This is the result of centuries spent honing farmer’s skills, refining production methods and improving agricultural management. Therefore when Italy won the nomination for Expo 2015, (they pipped Turkey to the post) it was no surprise that the theme should centre on a subject for which Italians are justly proud and dedicated to improving. Expo 2015 has as its theme, ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for life’ and it will be an event displaying tradition, creativity and innovation in the business of food. The common goal is the idea that everyone on the planet should have access to food that is healthy, safe and sufficient. Workshop and debate themes include: ensuring healthy and high-quality nutrition for all, doing away with the hunger, drought, infantile mortality, and malnutrition (still affecting 850 million people), preventing famine and pandemic disease; as well
as other diseases of our time including obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer by promoting practices which have proven results. Education will be another key theme especially in prompting proper nutrition and encouraging more healthy lifestyles, especially among children, adolescents, the disabled, and the elderly. Cross cultural discussion at any Expo and is especially valuable when it comes to culinary traditions, because farming traditions from different communities are part and parcel of genuine, high quality food. Today these traditions benefit from the application of scientific and technological innovations. Sustainable development issues will be high on the agenda as will an in depth look at the entire food chain from farm to table, with private firms, charities, NGOs, public institutions and consumers all playing a vital role in food related economies. Also very much in focus will be the host city, Milan. Like London or Paris, it has almost 10 million inhabitants. It produces 10% of Italy’s GNP and has a pro capita income which is almost double the Italian average and an unemployment level which is half the Italian average. It also sells 10 million tickets every year for art exhibitions, music and films putting it on a par with

Berlin, Amsterdam and Barcelona. Most notably it has 650 fashions show rooms making it a competitor to Paris and New York, and it is the Italian capital of charity work and tertiary services. For six months in 2015 Milan will be a hub for tourists from all over the world, and will therefore find itself in a position to prove its excellence and confirm its international standing. And for Milan the Expo will be a catalyst of resources and an accelerator of projects which will boost the city’s infrastructural legacy. The Centre for Sustainable Development will be one of the most concrete and prestigious legacies of the Expo, as will the large park which will be left on the site after the Exposition closes. ABOUT THE SITE The master plan concept for the site was drafted by a group of five internationallyfamous architects: Stefano Boeri, Richard Burdett, Jacques Herzog, Joan Busquets and William Mc Donough. The plans drawn up by these architects will make the 2015 EXPO a truly memorable one, as it will offer visitors a direct and immediate experience of the theme which is food. The exposition site will be an uncommon encounter between agriculture and the city and it will nourish Milan both literally and intellectually thanks to the creation of a massive food-farming park built on a series of orthogonal grills which will be surrounded by water canals and punctuated by large landscaped architectural features.

Jumeirah Creekside hotel, dubai From the outset, it’s the design and décor that first makes an impression on those entering Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, located in the heart of old Dubai, adjacent to The Irish Village. the haymarket, london Hot on the heels of the success of The Soho Hotel, London hoteliers Tim and Kit Kemp opened the Haymarket Hotel which is in total contrast to the minimalism of other contemporary London hotels. Housed in a landmark building by architect John Nash, the hotel comprises 50 individually designed bedrooms and suites as well as a 2-5 bedroom townhouse, all decorated to perfection by Kit Kemp (owner and design director of Firmdale 30

Hotels). Her forte is to avoid any design cookie cutter formulas and she mixes rich textures and colour with customised furniture (Miller Harris supplies the signature toiletries). It’s in the hotel’s communal areas that the artwork shines, particularly in the conservatory and library, which is favoured by the London fashion posse for hosting meetings. Worth checking is The Shooting Gallery, a vast space on the ground floor which can seat 70 for dinner, plus the spectacular 18 m long pool
with a bar, lounge, music and lighting system which uses strong contrasts to garner the wow factor. Kemp’s vision has combined the building’s heritage with a contemporary vision – as seen in the lobby. It’s an airy space featuring a large stainless steel sculpture by Tony Cragg and paintings by John Virtue, and these set the tone for other areas. the W Paris - oPera, Paris, FranCe Inspiring, iconic, innovative and influential are the hallmarks of the W brand of design-led lifestyle hotels. They've just launched their 42nd property, the W Hotel Paris - Opéra, and it’s the artwork which takes centre stage. Take, for instance, Suite 112 and its invisible art – the tear drop portrait on a background of Louis Vuitton logos can only be seen properly by using a special UV light usually associated with crime scene investigators. This was made by Zevs –- who made a reputation for himself in the 1990s due to his street art. If you look in the mirror of Suite 115 you might think it a wry joke. “Due to a manufacturing defect, the mirror in room 115 is no longer able to accurately reflect your image, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused". The handiwork of Shoboshobo, aka Mehdi Hercberg, he is influenced by the Japanese experimental scene and his drawings and murals are a mixture of improvisation as well as figures with rapidly scrawled body parts, geometric landscapes and monsters. You can also view his work, French Kiss, at the W Lounge or while training at the SWEAT Fitness centre where fictional characters can be seen exercising with wine bottles or doing yoga with macaroons. More surrealism and drama is found in Room 110 with an installation by Andrea Crews called Performance, while Room 215 presents Study of You by Random International. Its light, luminous images and messages shine and then slowly disappearing from view. If the art may not suit all palettes then two Michelin-starred Spanish Chef Sergi Arola’s concept of ‘pica pica’ sharing plates at his signature Arola restaurant may be more to your taste. This month, Dubai’s Just Falafel fast food chain is opening in the British capital – the first of a string of international franchise outlets. The popular eatery’s UK flagship store will open with the inauguration of its restaurant in trendy Covent Garden. Falafels, the tasty deep-fried spicy croquettes made from fava or chickpeas stuffed with vegetables, are an increasingly popular snack and were originally eaten during the month of Ramadan. The name Falafel comes from the Arabic word Filfil, which means pepper. The first Just Falafel outlet opened in Abu Dubai in 2007 and the company has earned a following in the country for its healthy vegetarian menu choices. Now, with over 25 outlets across the UAE, its founders have been bombarded with requests to take the brand global. According to CEO Fadi Malas, the company is looking at opening over 200 stores over the next five years. The company is expected to roll out across the UK, from London to Exeter and Cambridge, over the course of the next year. The company follows hot in the footsteps of the Noodle House. The popular Dubai noodle kitchen, created and managed by the Jumeirah Group, is also undergoing international expansion from its UAE base, with restaurants opening in the UK, Turkey, the Far East and Africa. Another popular Dubai eatery, Japengo – run by the Bin Hendi family – has also expanded into the Indian market. Travellers to the North African city of Casablanca, perhaps best known because of the Humphrey Bogart movie of the same name, can now enjoy an IMAX 3D cinema experience in the city’s new über-tech architectural attraction in the Moroccan Mall. Wrapped in a techno-shell of Corian from DuPont, the mall is the first luxury shopping centre to open in the region. Designed by Davide Padoa, CEO of Design International, and representing a new generation of North African consumer, the mall’s use of Corian extends from the external walls to the interior’s mushrabea space dividers. With some 70,000 square metres of retail space for 350 stores, including a Galleries Lafayette, the Morocco Mall is said to be the first and largest in Africa in its class, and recently won ‘Best Mall’ at this year’s international real estate show, MIPIM. Linked to the state-of-the-art mall that symbolises the innovation and the rebirth of the nation is a 400-seat IMAX cinema. Designed by architect Yasser Kahlaoui, the cinema houses the first digital projection in Africa. Meanwhile, in Oman’s canyon-like Wadi Shab, some 200 kilometres from Muscat, 11 divers from all over the world dove from the 27 metre-high cliff edge into fresh water pools below for the annual Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, which was being held in the Middle East for the first time. Britain’s thrill-seeking diver Gary Hunt made a number of impressive dives to take first prize and become the overall 2012 champion – his third successive championship. Olando Duque took second place and Steve Lobue third at the global event. In the south-east of France a number of flying enthusiasts-cum-daredevils took to the skies in their custom-built paragliders as part of the 39th annual Icare Cup competition. The highlight of the two day-long trade-fair combined with air show that attracts over 200 ultralight air-sport manufacturers is the Icarnival, which this year saw a dragonfly, a tool box and tandem cyclists suspended from gigantic parachutes soaring into the sky… dv

Navigating through the world’s fourth busiest airport just got easier thanks to the installation of a new alpha-numeric system for gate numbering and way-finding at dubai international. dubai Voyager talks exclusively to Mazhar butt about the changes. words Penny MccorMick

ou may have noticed something different at Dubai International recently. Perhaps you found your departure gate more quickly or even noticed the newly installed signage? If not, then take a second look at the newly installed alphanumeric system that has impacted everything from flight information display screens to boarding cards as well as airport reservation systems - as well as requiring that more than 1,500 signs be changed. Hundreds of airport staff, including Dubai Airports’ May I Help You personnel,

were deployed across the airport to support customers during the change-over. While the terminals retain their current numbering, all concourses and departure gates have been renamed. Concourse 1, which houses over 100 international airlines, becomes Concourse C with gates numbered C1 to C50. Concourse 2 becomes Concourse B with gates B1 to B32, and Concourse 3, the world’s first purpose-built A380 facility set to open next year, becomes Concourse A featuring gates A1 to A24.
On the other side of the airfield, gates in Terminal 2 have been numbered F1 to F6. The remaining alpha numeric sequences are being reserved for future airport facilities that are part of Dubai Airports’ $7.8 billion expansion programme, including Concourse D, for which excavation work commenced in June. The updating and conversion of existing signage was the first phase of a longer term project. When Concourse A opens in 2013, it will trigger a second round of upgrading which will feature the use of colour-coding

and internationally recognised icons in addition to the use of alpha-numeric gate numbering to further simplify the way-finding process.
DV talks to Mazhar Butt, Head of Service Development, about the behind the scenes planning for this cross-airport initiative Congratulations on the recent signage change. How long has this been in the planning? Thank you. This gate change was first discussed in 2011 as part of the Concourse A (then Concourse 3) planning process and Dubai Airports met with stakeholders, such as Emirates, dnata, flydubai and Dubai Duty Free in April 2012 to assess the scale of the challenge. However, the detailed planning for the project commenced from mid-July as we began to ensure everything from systems sign changes and communications were in place well before the reveal date of the new signage on 18 September.
What prompted the change to an alpha numeric system for gates? Ease of finding your way through the airport is one of our key service measures, and given the inherent design of Dubai International, coupled with the high volume of connecting passengers, it is imperative that passengers can find their way through the airport with ease. A combination of research, feedback from passengers as well as best practice benchmarking showed that an alphanumeric system would dramatically help our passengers find their way from the kerb to their seat on the plane. The system is an industry standard, with most big airports having adopted an alphanumeric gate numbering system where passengers tend to associate a letter with a building, and the gate with a number. Our ultimate aim is to ensure all passengers can find their way to their assigned gates well in time for their flights.
What has the response been to the new signs? It has been extremely positive. All our airlines, and in particular Emirates airline, feel it is working well and, judging by the feedback from our operations team, passengers have quickly adapted to the new system.
our stakeholders that we managed to break all the key tasks down and manage the risks as they arose. On the actual day, we set up two separate workgroups – one focusing on the systems and the other on the actual sign changes. The overarching steering group then focused on the planned changes for the day.
It’s the first phase of a longer term project. Could you tell us a little about this please? The aim is to upgrade signage across all our passenger buildings with new signage standards, of which the alpha-numeric gate numbering system is the first step. The new signage will be much clearer, using more internationally recognised icons instead of text, as well as colour-coding to emphasise key messages, all of which will make it easier for passengers to navigate their way through the airport. Concourse A will be the first facility to use this new signage when it opens in the first quarter of next year. This will be followedby the upgrading of signs in Terminals 1, 2 and 3 as well as Concourses B and C to the new signage over the remainder of 2013. With the new gate numbers in place, the second phase of the project can progress with
minimal impact on the airport operations.
Can you give us some of the statistics for this change – I believe there are 1,500 new signs. Any other facts you could share with us? We had a total of 750 signs which had to be double-printed. The new alpha-numeric signs were printed and then covered again with the old numeric gate number sign so that on the day we simply had to remove the old numeric gate number to reveal the alpha-numeric sign beneath. So in total we had to print around 1,500 new signs and on the day we removed 750 of these. We had a tight window of 3-4 hours to do this in Concourse B (formerly Concourse 2) and did this in around two hours, and then completed Concourse C (formerly Concourse 1) in a similar time. The team then moved to Terminal 2 and completed the changes in under an hour. In total, we had scheduled an eight-hour plan and completed the works within six hours. For the day itself, we had a list of around 50 separate activities which had to be completed sequentially within specified times, with everything going perfectly to plan. dv

NatioNal geographic films “dubai: ultimate airport” Finding out what happens behind the scenes at dubai international will become a lot easier and more accessible, as National Geographic Channels international, in conjunction with award-winning production company arrow Media, has commissioned a ten-part documentary series about the day-today working of dubai international that will be broadcast to over 440 million households in 171 countries when it airs in 2013. “National Geographic Channel is always at the forefront of providing viewers exclusive access to extraordinary places around the globe, and this series combines great stories of cutting-edge engineering, technology and architecture, with a truly international cast of characters who deal every day with the pressures of running a very large, dynamic airport,” said Hamish Mykura, Executive Vice President and Head of international Content for National Geographic Channels international. With the working title ‘dubai: ultimate airport’, the series will follow the daily operation of the world’s fourth busiest airport for international passenger traffic, and will involve staff across dubai’s aviation community including Emirates airline, dnata, dubai duty Free, dubai Customs, dubai immigration, dubai Police and dubai airports. The main focus of the 10 one hour-long documentaries will be on the frontline aspects of the airport’s operations, and camera crews will strive to capture the humour, tension and jeopardy that is part of the daily operation of the airport, as well as the patience and professionalism displayed by staff dealing with challenging situations. Filming kicked off on 24 September. dubai iNterNatioNal’s cargo capacity uNdergoes major expaNsioN Over the next few months, as part of dubai airports’ $7.8 billion Strategic Plan 2020, construction is set to begin on a 30,000m2 addition to dubai international’s 1.2 million tonne Cargo Mega Terminal (CMT), increasing capacity by 25 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes a year. dubai international’s original cargo facilities, Hall a and Freight Gate 1, located adjacent to the Cargo Mega Terminal, will also undergo a complete refurbishment. Together, these facilities will be dedicated for the sole use of Emirates airline. as a result of the modernisation and expansion programme, cargo capacity will increase to 3.1 million tons by 2018. a new transhipment facility with capacity for 400,000 tonnes of freight a year is also under construction. Once complete, it will handle about 60 per cent of cargo transferred between dubai international and dubai World Central, dubai’s second airport. The new facility will be erected on the former site of the airport Expo building, which was partially demolished earlier this year to make way for it and a new baggage processing facility. The new infrastructure is in response to growing volumes of freight being transported through dubai. Total annual cargo volumes across both airports are projected to surge from the 2.19 million tonnes recorded last year to 4.1 million tonnes by 2020. While the greater flexibility at dubai World Central is attracting an increasing number of dedicated cargo operators, dubai international will remain an important cargo hub with growth in belly cargo driven by Emirates airline’s ongoing network expansion.

GROWING TO WIN Dubai Duty Free continues to flourish as it travels its triumphant path. CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF WORLDCLASS GOLF What started as a concept for bringing representatives of the duty free industry to Dubai for a few days of friendly competition has turned out to be one of the most successful and popular golfing events on the DDF calendar. For two decades, this prestigious event has consistently attracted top executives from the duty free industry worldwide, with players coming from Great Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Netherlands, as well as from regional duty free operations in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Qatar and Bahrain. On 28 and 29 November, Dubai Duty Free will mark the 20th year of the tournament, at the Montgomerie Dubai and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club. DOUBLE DIGIT SALES GROWTH As Dubai Duty Free heads into a busy last quarter of 2012, sales up to the end of September have reached Dhs4.16 billion (US$1.14 billion), representing a 10% increase over the same period last year and placing the operation very much on track for year-end sales of an estimated Dhs6 billion (US$1.6 billion ). Perfumes, liquor and gold continue to be the top three selling categories at Dubai Duty Free, with sales of perfumes reaching Dhs633 million (US$173 million), representing an increase of 15% over last year. With perfume sales accounting for 15% of total Dubai Duty Free sales, the operation plans to open a second Perfumes and Cosmetics (P&C) retail area in Concourse B at Terminal 3. Covering some 240 square metres, the new shop will be located in the west side of the Concourse, and is scheduled to open by the end of the year. Commenting on the top selling category, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free said, “We are constantly looking at our retail offering at Dubai International and looking at ways of enhancing it. In the case of Perfumes and Cosmetics (P&C), which are core categories, we have had several developments this year, including the opening of a Jo Malone retail area in Concourse B, the opening of a second Kiehl’s area, this time in Concourse C in Terminal 1, and the installation of a new Tom Ford unit - also in Concourse C. “The opening of a second P&C area in Concourse B later this year will enable us to extend our existing product range and to introduce some new brands that we have not formerly been able to do due to space constraints in the existing shops.” Meanwhile, Liquor and Gold achieved sales of Dhs612 million (US$168 million) and Dhs415 million (US$114 million) respectively for the first nine months of the year. Sales of Cosmetics rose by 16% to Dhs265 million (US$73 million) while Confectionery grew by 17% to Dhs333 million (US$91 million), accounting for 8% of total revenue. Sales grew across all three terminals, with Terminal 1 sales growing by 9%, while sales in Terminal 2 rose by 15% and Terminal 3 was up by 10% over the same period last year. Overall Departure sales have grown by 10% while overall Arrivals duty free sales have risen by 14%. Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, Dubai Duty Free will celebrate its 29th anniversary on 20 December this year and the operation has plans in place to make this a memorable occasion. For starters, the anniversary day will be marked by a 25% discount on a wide range of merchandise, for what has become an annual celebration for all passengers using the airport on that day. “We started this promotion when we celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2003 and it has become a popular day with travellers, some of whom book their flights in order to shop on that day,” says McLoughlin. “Last year, the operation achieved magnificent sales figures of Dhs86.75 million (US$24 million) or US$1 million per hour on the anniversary day, and we are looking forward to trying to break that record.”

MEDFA 2012 The forthcoming middle east Duty Free Association (meDFA) Conference will highlight the middle east’s pivotal role in the global economy; and specifically in the aviation sector as a major hub for international travel. dv talks exclusively to Colm mcLoughlin, executive vice Chairman, Dubai Duty Free, ahead of the event. What is the importance of this conference and exhibition to the global Duty Free industry? The meDFA conference is hugely significant for the industry both in this region and beyond. meDFA was established in 2001, mainly to serve the industry in the middle east and to share common experiences as an industry. The current President of meDFA is John Sime, vice President retail Services, emirates Airlines and vice President of meDFA is Sean Staunton, vice President – operations of Dubai Duty Free. The idea for the conference followed in 2002 and the TFWA (Tax Free World Association) has worked with meDFA on the running of the conference. over the past 11 years the calibre of speakers and the topics covered has been consistently high and I can honestly say that I have learnt something new at every conference that I have attended. This year, for the first time, the middle east exclusive exhibition will be staged ahead of meDFA, which I think will be a great addition to what is a busy industry week. What does it mean for Dubai to be host nation for this conference? The objective of meDFA is to take the conference to different cities in the region that are represented by meDFA members, so Dubai is the host every second year. The fact that Dubai has such an established infrastructure and its hotels are second to none certainly makes it a popular destination for meDFA and its delegates. Also, the fact that the UAe is such a significant contributor towards the aviation industry (accounting for 250,000 jobs and contributing over $22 billion (Dhs80.8 billion), which represents around 19% of total employment in Dubai and 28% of the city’s GDP), staging the meDFA conference here obviously has a lot of interest from within the industry. but it is also good for the conference to move venues every now and then and I have enjoyed the years that the meDFA conference was held in new markets. What is the anticipated growth of Dubai Duty Free sales over the next year and how will this be achieved? Year to date our sales are up by 10% over the same period in 2011 and that means that we are very much on track for sales of US$1.6 billion by the end of this year. With the opening of Concourse A in the first quarter of 2013, we believe that next year will be a significant year with our retail operation expanding to 26,000 square metres and our staffing levels growing to over 5,400. The new Concourse will be a fantastic addition to all stakeholders and from a retail point of view it will ease congestion greatly in Concourse b and provide us with the opportunity to expand our current product range as well as introduce new categories in a brand new retail environment that will definitely have the ‘wow’ factor. In personal terms, what are some of the Duty Free milestones of which you are particularly proud? There are many milestones of course but I do remember vividly when our daily sales reached Dhs1 million - we were all very excited about that. I also remember the year when our annual sales surpassed Dhs1 billion (2002). now our average daily sales are Dhs15 million and our annual sales are expected to be Dhs6 billion (US$1.6 billion) this year. From a personal point of view I am very proud of the fact that of our original 100 staff in December 1983, 46 remain in active service, including George Horan, President of Dubai Duty Free and myself!

At Dubai Airport Arrivals you can buy a visitor sim card which is sold by either Etisalat or du, the two local telecoms operators. It allows you to have a UAE mobile phone number charged at local rates. The biggest difference between the two operators is that du charges by the second, while Etisalat charges per minute usage. To obtain a local number you must be 18 years or above and provide a copy of your passport. An activation fee of Dhs60 will be charged, which includes Dhs25 in credit. The sim card is valid for 90 days but can be renewed every time you visit Dubai, so you can keep the same number.

KLAUS ASSMANN Having worked around the globe, Klaus Assmann is a seasoned traveller and an accomplished hotelier who brings international perspective and expertise to his role as general manager at the hip Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. WORDS PENNY MCCORMICK
T
here’s not much Klaus Assmann doesn’t know about hotels and his forte, it seems, is opening them! In his varied career in hospitality, he has worked in London, New York, San Francisco, and in Dubai for the Nikko, Park Hyatt and Holiday Inn hotel groups before joining Jumeirah. As a connoisseur of service and with an eye for detail, he first joined Jumeirah as Director of Food and Beverage for Madinat Jumeirah in 2003 before becoming the Executive Assistant Manager of Food & Beverage for the property in 2004. In 2005, Klaus moved to America where he worked as the Hotel Manager for Jumeirah Essex House in New York and also worked for the pre-opening of some of Jumeirah’s new properties. In his role as General Manager of Jumeirah Creekside (owned by Dubai Duty Free), he has overseen all the pre-opening activities of this boutique hotel, implementing Jumeirah’s Stay Different brand promise with impressive results.
languages; I speak English and German fluently and can speak basic Greek and French. One of my big regrets is not to have learned more. Languages for me are the gateway to a culture; but I hope I still have enough time to learn one or two more!
As a hotelier, what do you look for in other hotels while you are travelling?
Walking! I’ve tried everything else and for me walking is the best way to orientate myself and to see and explore a new city or town.
I always look forward to staying at hotels which deliver seamless service. I always notice when things are being taken care of before you notice or need them. I am also very keen on location; a hotel has to be the right fit for the purpose of the journey, as well as being in the right place.
What has been your most memorable holiday? There are many places for many different reasons; however, a place that still impresses me is the Alps.
Which part of travelling do you most enjoy? I like to stroll around in airports, like we all do I guess, and of course the onboard service. I find the idea of being served at your seat a bit like having breakfast in bed!
How many languages do you speak and what’s the best method of learning languages in your opinion? I am unfortunately not that talented with 74

What have your world travels taught you? That the world is small, but also big at the same time. I am still massively impressed by nature’s creations such as the Alps and the Grand Canyon, and how different cultures and people are playing such an important role in the big picture of global unity and uniqueness; I have embraced them and learned from them.
How do you explore a new city?
What is the biggest misconception you’ve encountered about Dubai? I was surprised how welcoming Arabic hospitality is, on all levels, at homes, in hotels, everywhere!
Where are you going on holiday to this year? I just came back, from a family holiday in Paris.
Are you a big collector of holiday souvenirs and if so, what do you usually bring back home from a new destination? For me, personally I don’t usually collect holiday souvenirs, but I always buy small, unique gifts for my children.
what the secret is! I’ve tried a lot of different ways but have had no luck yet, so I still keep exploring options.
Do you travel light? If I can yes; I do not like to wait for my luggage after landing.
I never leave home without… Aspirin.
Who was the most interesting people you’ve met on your travels? A monk in Thailand whom I met at the airport in Bangkok inspired me the most.
How do you overcome jet lag?
