The increasing use of technology is steering Dubai towards its goal to be one of the smartest cities in the world as it surges ahead to woo 20 million annual visitors by the year 2020. Dubai Airports has just launched its new mobile app to help travellers efficiently and easily navigate their way through their airport experience. The app comes hot on the heels of the operator’s new WiFi offering, allowing travellers to stay connected during their journey. “Our passengers are increasingly engaging with us online, demanding immediate information on our airports. The Dubai Airports App allows us to provide that information in real-time, tailored to each passenger’s particular journey through our airport,” said CEO Paul Griffiths. Designed to offer a clean, intuitive user experience, the app seeks to provide maximum individual assistance throughout the airport journey, guiding passengers to the wealth of shopping and dining options and services at the airport in real time, while 3D maps help travellers to navigate through the facilities. Meanwhile, with sales of US$1.8 billion in 2013, Dubai Duty Free (DDF) has been named the world’s number one airport retailer. The dynamic DDF management team is also encouraging travellers to conveniently shop on-line by visiting the new virtual store: online.dubaidutyfree.com. Pre-travel shoppers simply select and reserve their purchases and then pay and collect at the airport. Supporting the emirate’s smart city strategy, Dubai Tourism Commerce Marketing (DTCM) previewed its new mobile app and website during the recent GITEX show – the region’s biggest tech and ICT expo. “Today’s global traveller expects to be connected at all times and wherever they go. Dubai recognises this need. Technology and connectivity have incredible potential to enhance the tourism experience. Technology is not only changing how and why we travel, but also where we travel,” a DTCM spokesperson said. The new DTCM app and website are expected to be launched in the coming months. With the recent opening of a third Burj Khalifa observation deck, on the 148th floor of the Dubai tower, the UAE has added another world record to its trophy cabinet. Now visitors can enjoy views of the city from a height of 555.7 metres, form what has been confirmed as the world’s highest observation deck. Until recently the record was held by the 448-metre-high facility at the Canton Tower in China. Over 1.87 million visitors visited the iconic Burj Khalifa last year, which stands some 800 metres high. This is the 130th entry for the UAE in the legendary Guinness World Records list! dv

Reaching the sky by the end of 2015, the Middle East will be home to 289 buildings over 150 metres high, according by a recent report by the CTbuH (Council on Tall buildings and urban Habitat). dubai is set to contain most of them – 149, with abu dhabi coming second with 32. Twenty years ago, only two skyscrapers in the region fitted into this category: the baynunah Tower in abu dhabi (165m) and the Mersin Complex in Turkey (177m). dubai's first 150+m skyscraper was the burj al arab, completed in 1999, but by 2010 it was already home to the tallest building in the world, the burj Khalifa (828m).
Red planet dubai has just announced the launch of the first uaE space programme which aims to send a research probe to Mars in the next seven years. it would be the very first time an arab country has sent a mission to the red planet. The newly established uaE Space agency starts with a generous budged of over uS$5 billion dollars (dhs18.3 billion) and its first priority will be to send an unmanned spaceship to Mars by 2021. The agency also aims to encourage the growth of the arab aerospace industry, and it is expected to have positive effect on the regional economy. 10

Egyptian Art dubai art-lovers can embark on a journey to Egypt via Egyptian beliefs, a solo show for Egyptian artist adel Tharwat at Gallery Ward. Curated by Ehab El-Laban, the exhibition highlights the iconic concepts, style and imagery of Tharwat’s representations of Egyptian culture, with figures and scenes exploring the heritage that shaped modern Egyptian life. in his work, old tales, popular myths and melodious hymns reveal new meanings using symbols manifested in objects (like the key), forms (like triangles), texts or postures and figures reminiscent of Pharaonic monuments and murals. The Future of Flight The first solar-powered flight in the world is scheduled to depart from abu dhabi in March 2015. Health is wealth. Contracts for new medical facilities in the GCC are anticipated to reach uS$9.53 billion by the end of the year. This 25 per cent increase over last year is another example of how the region continues to lead in the health care field. alongside this rapid growth, contractors will be gathering in dubai at The big 5 building and Construction Exhibition. Currently ranking as one of the top 20 destinations for medical tourism, the uaE plans to attract 500,000 patients for treatment by 2020 as part of its goal to become a centre for medical excellence. Trackrecord The dubai Tram system is a one-of-a-kind: the first in the Middle East and a world-first feat of engineering, safety and style. Get on board and get all the answers with dv!
Dubai has a tramway line? Yes! The new Dubai Tram is scheduled to open this month, a first for the Gulf region. It is the first tramway outside Europe to be powered by a ground-based electric supply system, and the world’s first to use PSD (platform screen doors) in every station. The custom-built, fully air-conditioned trams are referred to as ‘Diamond Cut’, due to their diamond-shaped front nose, and their exterior is inspired by the look of sand dunes.
how Does it work? It’s easy! Trams will operate for 20 hours a day, from 5am to 1am, running every six minutes, and can be accessed using a Nol card: tickets fares are based on the same Zone structure as the Dubai Metro. They will provide a hassle-free, fun and practical way to get around the city for both residents and tourists alike. Inside, each tram has seven coaches, including a gold suite and a family area, and features state-of-the-art technology with deluxe seating and ‘infotainment’ systems.
is it safe? Very! The PSD system fully aligns with the tram’s doors, providing maximum convenience, safety and security for passengers, and protecting the quality of the air-conditioned air, even in harsh weather. Extra care has also been taken to safeguard everyone on the road: new traffic rules say that motorists crossing a red traffic signal at the intersection area with the tramway will incur hefty fines, and new rules ask pedestrians to abstain from using headphones or mobile phones in the area where the tram is running. And for bike users, a wide cycling track will also be constructed alongside the tram route, to make roads even more accessible and safe.
where is it going? The construction of the line is in two phases: at the moment, the line is a 10.6 kilometre-long track starting at Dubai Marina and running to the tram depot next to the Dubai Police Academy, with 11 stations inbetween, covered by a fleet of 11 trams. Phase two, scheduled to be completed before 2020, will bring the route length to 14.6 kilometres and the tram fleet to 25. The new tramway line is also set to connect to the Dubai Metro and the Palm Jumeirah monorail. Four air-conditioned footbridges at Tecom, Dubai Marina Mall and Al Sufouh Road will serve the tram stations, which will connect destinations such as Burj Al Arab and Dubai Media City.

why is it unique? Dubai Tram is really special: aside from being the first tramway system in the Middle East region, the first tram in the world to feature PSD doors, and the world’s first tramway project outside France powered by a ground-based electric supply (meaning no need for overhead electric cables), it also has many other high-tech features, such as ‘tropicalised’ equipment that can withstand temperatures above 50°C, high humidity and sand. The trams and all the signalling systems have been developed by French multinational Alstom, the same company behind the TGV high-speed train and many other transport systems around the world, while the main contractor for the line is Belgian company Besix.

ritically-acclaimed Akshay Kumar started acting in the 1990s and has more than 120 films under his belt. His contribution to Indian cinema has earned him many awards, including an honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Windsor, Ontario. A karate black belt, he is known for performing all of his stunts, and recently launched a Martial Arts Institute for women in Mumbai, offering free self-defense classes. His philanthropic work supports initiatives such as the Asian Heart Institute, the UN campaign against human trafficking, HIV awareness in rural India, and the Special Olympics. After the success of his last comedy, It's Entertainment, he travelled to the UAE to film Baby, tipped to be an exhilarating action-thriller.
How did you become an actor?
During one of my martial arts classes, one of my students, a photographer, encouraged me to get into modelling. I was spotted a couple of months later and recommended to a film director. I wasn’t born to act; I’ve become an actor, and an extremely passionate one at that.
Any interesting stories about any stunts you’ve performed?
Once I had to stand on top of a plane flying over 60 meters-high with only my feet strapped in. I'd never felt so cold and my bones have never rattled so much. I had to jump on top of a flying hot air balloon, slide down the side and swing into the basket! The director only had two cameras, so I only had one chance to get it right. That’s probably the one stunt I would never perform again; I was lucky I got away with it!
You opened a free martial art centre for women in Mumbai.
I have always believed in equality. The self-defence of women in India has been a major concern lately, so with the support of young leader Aditya Thackrey we started free self-defence classes for as many women as we can.
What about your work as ambassador for the Special Olympics?
My philanthropic work is extremely important to me. I had the privilege of accepting ‘The Flame of Hope’, for the first ever International Olympics Cricket Cup, which was passed to me by Pakistani Cricketer Wasim Akram.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Goa is one of the most beautiful places I have been to, the perfect place for family time with my wife and children. We have many great memories from time spent there.
What is your favourite place in Dubai?
It is impossible to pick just one! Dubai is so welcoming that we decided to purchase a home here. If my family were to move anywhere, this is definitely a wonderful place to settle down. dv

Can you tell us a bit more about It’s Entertainment?
It’s a comedy of errors. I play Akhil, who inherits a huge sum from a relative. His plans are dashed when he realises that everything has been left to a dog called 'Entertainment'.
What about Baby?
It is directed by one of India's finest young directors, Neeraj Pandey. I am thrilled to be back filming in the UAE.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to be an actor?
Always read a script before declining it because you just never know what it might become. Be prepared for the good and bad times.

oday, during an average year, airplanes carry three billion people – the equivalent of 44 per cent of the world’s population, and 50 million tonnes of cargo, while the airline industry supports 56.6 million jobs and is worth US$2.2 trillion. Over 40,000 cities are connected by planes, and new airports are built every day throughout the world: the recently opened Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central is now fully operational 24 hours a day, while works on Dubai International’s Concourse D are on schedule for the planned opening early next year. Works are well under way also at Abu Dhabi Airport, with the new Midfield terminal expected to open in 2017. The luxurious Hamad International Airport in Doha – where the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently celebrated 70 years of activity – is now open to passengers, as is the new Terminal 2 – The Queen’s Terminal at Heathrow airport, which was inaugurated by Her Majesty herself. It is hard to comprehend how quickly things have evolved since 1 January 1914, the day on which the first ever scheduled flight with a paying passenger took off from the American town of St. Petersburg to reach Tampa, Florida: a 23-minute journey that was truly destined to change the world forever. American pioneering pilot Tony Jannus and his only passenger, former St. Petersburg mayor Abram C. Pheil, flew in a Benoist
bi-wing airboat, an open-cockpit seaplane: the US$400 paid by Pheil for his ticket seems today a very reasonable price for making it into the history books! One hundred years later, on 1 January 2014, the number of paying passengers boarding a commercial plane all over the world was reported to be a staggering 8,547,945. Of course, it is not all positive: with more and more passengers travelling every day, IATA is confronted with new challenges, such as how to penalise unruly passengers: between 2007 and 2013 there were over 28,000 reported incidents on board aircraft. Misbehaving passengers are still a small minority but IATA has developed new guidance and training that’s intended to manage these potentially risky situations. No other form of transportation is as scrutinised, investigated and monitored as commercial aviation, making it one of the safest methods of transportation today: according to studies conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, over a monitored period of nearly 20 years the risk of being in an accident while in flight is one in seven million, which pales in comparison to the recorded one hundred and thirty fatal car accidents that happened daily during this study. If today we get on a plane as easily as we brush our teeth in the morning, we truly owe it to the pioneering minds that took that first leap of faith 100 years ago. dv november 2014

The compact nature of the passenger terminal building has already won travellers’ votes. From kerb to boarding gate, departing passengers are able to complete check-in and immigration processes in less than ten minutes. Marhaba, Dubai’s premium meet-and-greet service, earlier this year inaugurated its DWC lounge, a spacious facility that comfortably accommodates up to 100 passengers. Inside the terminal, a wide variety of cuisine awaits food aficionados. For Indian cuisine with a twist – such as piping hot parathas with halloumi, Nutella and even peanut butter – head to Hot & Roll, finishing off your meal with a cup of quintessentially Indian cardamom tea. Voted the best airport in the Middle East, Europe and Africa by Frequent Business Traveler readers, and the world’s second busiest international airport, Dubai International has been leading the region by expanding its digital services to help more than 66 million passengers get smoothly from check-in to the boarding gate. “Our passengers are increasingly engaging with us online, demanding immediate information on our airports. The Dubai Airports App allows us to provide that information in real-time, and tailored to each passenger’s particular journey through our airport,” says Dubai Airports’ CEO Paul Griffiths. “It is just another way in which we are leveraging technology to create a passenger experience that is efficient and welcoming.” The app was designed to offer a clean and intuitive user experience that provides maximum individualised assistance through every part of their airport journey. “The app is one part of a wider digital ecosystem refresh

Awards simply poured in recently, reiterating that DDF is indeed the world’s best. outstaNdiNg coNtributioN hoNoured Colm mcLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free’s executive vice Chairman, has been named as a recipient of Ireland's Presidential Distinguished Service Award – in recognition of service given to Ireland by Irish citizens living abroad. mcLoughlin is the first Irish person living in the UAe to be given the award, for his outstanding contribution to Irish business and communities abroad. He was nominated in the business and education category. over the past three decades, mcLoughlin has been an integral part of the Irish community in the UAe and through his success as a business leader has greatly enhanced the reputation of Ireland and the Irish in the UAe. The Irish Ambassador to the UAe, Patrick Hennessy, said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Colm mcLoughlin, who is the first Irish person in the UAe to receive this Presidential Distinguished Service Award. During his time in the region, Colm has been hugely important in helping to increase business ties between the UAe and Ireland”. Irish President michael D. Higgins presented the award at an official ceremony held in october at the official presidential residence in Dublin. double delight For ddF DDF shone brightly at the recent Asian Leadership Awards ceremony. In recognition of his 31 years of leadership at DDF, which has helped to make it the world’s single largest airport retailer, Colm mcLoughlin, was inducted into the Asian Leadership Awards Hall of Fame. At the same event, DDF also won the marketing Campaign of the Year award for its 30th anniversary campaign, which included a series of initiatives such as the publication of a book entitled ‘Through the Lens’, ‘The First 30 Years’ and the production of a documentary film. The anniversary campaign culminated on the anniversary day itself – 20 December 2013 – when discounts of up to 30% across a wide range of products resulted in a spending frenzy and daily sales of US$30.65 million.
World’s No.1 Dubai Duty Free regains Position as World’s No.1 Airport retailer. Independent sales analysis has confirmed that DDF is again the largest single airport retail operation in the world, a position it also held in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The annual report by Generation research showed that sales of US$1.8 billion in 2013 allowed the retailer to take first place for the fourth time, ahead of Seoul Incheon, Singapore Changi and London Heathrow airports. DDF’s sales performance gave it a 3 per cent share of the global duty free and travel retail market, which rose by 7.5% in 2013 to reach a record US$60 billion. Airport duty free sales account for US$34.67 billion of that business, and Dubai Duty Free met 5.19% of global demand during the year. In the middle east, airport-based duty free sales reached US$3.9 billion in 2013, a 10% increase over the previous year, and Dubai Duty Free accounted for 45.73% of airport sales in the region. Among the world’s top 25 countries for duty free and travel retail shopping, the UAe ranked 7th, taking 4.1% of sales. Colm mcLoughlin, executive vice Chairman of DDF, commented on the latest figures: “We are obviously delighted to be the world’s number one duty free retailer for the fourth time and to see that our business, along with the duty free business across the middle east, continues to grow significantly. “This is a dynamic part of the world for airport retail and the continued investment in airport infrastructure reflects that. At DDF,
our expansion plans continue in line with development at Dubai International, where our retail operation will reach 33,000 square metres with the opening of Concourse D next year. And at Al maktoum International, our 2,500-square metre operation will grow in line with the massive development plans of Dubai World Central.” DDF continues to enjoy increasing sales and is on track to reach a record US$1.9 billion by the end of this year. DDF will be the Federation’s official Sponsor of the UAe rugby referees and match officials for the 2014/2015 season. JuNiors at the tee The Dubai Duty Free Junior medal Championship 2014 got back under way at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club recently. Attracting a strong field of junior golfers, the nine-hole stroke play series has been very well received since its introduction last year. Aarkesh bhatia and Alex Nielsen finished tied with two fantastic scores of 30. Nielsen and brother markus excelled in the boy’s Division, finishing first and second respectively with scores of 30 and 33.5. Jai bhalla picked up the best Gross prize with a score of level par 35. mikhail Pinto and vijayesh Haridas were awarded for their accurate tee shots on the par-3 fifth and eighth holes. 38

Dubbed as the wedding of the year Hollywood actor
George Clooney recently married Anglo-Lebanese human rights lawyer, Amal Alamuddin in Venice, Italy. The intimate wedding was attended by Hollywood a-listers including Matt Demon, Bono, and Cindy Crawford, as well as close family members. Seventeen year old Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai and 60-year old Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian child rights campaigner are the joint-winners of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. Malala, suffered life-threatening gun shot wounds to her head after being targeted by the Taliban in 2012, for campaigning for girls education. She is the youngest ever reciprocate of the laureate. Satyarthi, founded the Save the Childhood Movement, that lobbies for child rights and an end to human trafficking.
