Smart with a heart As part of the Smart City plan to become a fully-connected city, free internet will be available on all Dubai’s taxis by the end of this year. This service, already available on 155 Hala Taxis across the city, will be extended to all cars, which will also be able to accept payments by debit or credit card, as well as Nol cards, the pre-paid smart cards used on the Dubai’s metro, bus networks, and the soon-to-be launched Dubai Tram. Driverless cars on the streets of Dubai could also become a reality sooner than we think, as the RTA said in local newspaper reports. By 2020, when over 25 million visitors are expected to visit the Expo site, electric cars guided only by laser and radar could be the regular way we commute, making every trip safer and causing less congestion on the roads, while the land now occupied by parking lots will be free for public green spaces to be built. Dubai has already the world’s longest driverless metro system, which is very successful and carries 50.000 passengers every day. The people of the UAE has proved once again their generosity by raising millions in charity donations to the Red Crescent as well as other organisations, which together with over Dhs 50 million donated by the government, will go to help providing emergency aid and food to all those affected by the recent unrest in the region. We can all keep making a difference in the life of many by donating to a charity of our choice. After the great success of Dubai as the host of the Fiba Under 17 World basketball championship, sport-lovers were happy to hear that the new goal for the city might be nothing less than hosting the Olympic Games. Rio de Janeiro is hosting the Games in 2016, and Tokyo will host in 2020, but the bidding for the 2024 games is still open, and according to recent news, the possibility of a Dubai bid within the next eight years is being seriously considered. Two Guinness Records Known for her outstanding and innovative work around the globe, Maria Conceicao, founder of dubai’s Maria Cristina Foundation, has been awarded two Guinness World Records. She conquered both the 777 ultramarathon Challenge and seven full-distance (50km) ‘ultramarathons’ that were run on each of the seven continents within seven weeks. Conceicao completed the challenge in only six weeks, and her second record was the fastest aggregate time taken to complete an ultramarathon on seven continents. Her incredible efforts were all in aid of her charity, the Maria Cristina Foundation (MCF), which helps educate slum children in dhaka, bangladesh, to help free them from poverty.
Crazy for crocodiles arriving from a crocodile farm in australia with his female companion of 20 years, King Croc is coming to the dubai aquarium & underwater Zoo. Weighing 750 kg plus, equivalent to the weight of over 15 fully-grown men, the 40 year-old is over five metres long and has the potential to grow even bigger in the next 50 years. His bite force (with 60 razor-sharp teeth the size of an average index finger) is the highest of any animal: 703 kilograms per square metre (3,700psi), with its head weighing over 150 kg.

dubai is the first city in the Middle East to host an Expo in 2020, but next year it is time for Milan, italy, to be home to this extraordinary event. words laura volpi

The first Expo in the Middle East will be in dubai in 2020, but before that, there will be another Expo in 2015 (May 1 – October 31), held in the italian city of Milan. The 2015 theme is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, and it will be the largest worldwide event ever organised on the theme of food. The main topic of debate will be: is it possible to ensure that all humanity has good, healthy, sufficient and sustainable food? More than 140 nations will take part, each showcasing the best of their culture with custom-designed pavilions and a variety of restaurants, cafés, shops and bars. The 1 million square meters site, inspired by the original structure of Roman encampments, will feature thematic areas and special districts such as the ‘supermarket of the future’, as well as a wide program of events, conferences and performances, including a Lake arena hosting shows and concerts on floating platforms. The main italian pavilion will be the six floors-high Palazzo italia, whose waved facade echoes a petrified forest: the exterior will be made of a new cement which collects pollutants and purifies the city’s air.

The uaE will be present at Milan Expo 2015 with a pavilion designed by british architect Lord Norman Foster, which is the author of many projects in the region, such as the recently opened aldar Central Market in abu dhabi, and the new Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat island, to be inaugurated in 2016. The uaE pavilion will feature waved walls and augmented reality displays which will bring to life an ancient desert city full of narrow alleys and courtyards, and even a green oasis, a perfect example of an urban settlement with high energy efficiency. Modern Emirati food will be offered in different dining spaces, including a striking rooftop terrace restaurant. at the heart of the pavilion will be a state-of-the-art auditorium, complemented by interactive displays, digital talks, and a special exhibit about Expo 2020. among the many other countries taking part in this global fair are azerbaijan, which will present a sustainable four-storey structure covered in wooden waves and inspired by the rich diversity of the country's territory, traditions, climate, cultures and cuisine; China, which is planning a structure dominated by an undulating bamboo roof, which will be lit at night to create an ethereal effect; austria, which will recreate a miniature forest where visitors will enjoy a micro-climate typical of the country’s landscape, bringing the focus on the quality of the air we breathe; and Germany, which will present a landscape-like structure in steel and wood, with nature as their main inspiration and different routes offering a variety of experiences.

The latest edition of Expo was held in 2010, in Shanghai, China, and had the theme Better City, Better Life. Over 73 million people visited the city, which resulted in over uS $157 million profit for the organisers, despite the event being billed as the most expensive Expo in history. 246 countries and international organizations took part, and among them was the uaE, which presented a striking desert-inspired pavilion designed by Lord Norman Foster, which is now a permanent exhibition centre on Saadiyat island, abu dhabi. Previously, the Japanese city of aichi hosted Expo 2005, with the theme Nature's Wisdom. 126 countries took part in this event, visited by over 22 million people, and the city recorded a profit of over uS $97 million.

WHAT IS EXPO? Expo is also known as the World's Fair. Every five years, hundreds of countries from all over the globe come together to present to the rest of the world their unique identity as nations, and to forecast how the future can be improved, with the help of new technological and scientific inventions, but also by encouraging dialogue and discussion on themes such as peace, sustainability and cultural understanding. The very first Expo was held in London in 1851 and it was called The Great Exhibition. it was famously supported by Queen Victoria and her husband Prince albert as a celebration of modern industrial technology and design. Many worldfamous monuments have been created in occasion of Expo. among them are the Crystal Palace, London (1851), the Tour Eiffel, Paris (1889), the Atomium, brussels (1958), and the Space Needle, Seattle (1962).

Fast forwarding after Milan, dubai will be hosting Expo in 2020 (October 20 2020 - april 10 2021), with the theme Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. Spanning over 4 square kilometres in the Southwestern edge of dubai, as part of the global hub of dubai World Central, the Expo site will feature state-of-the art, environmentally friendly technology, as green and sustainable living is one of the main focus of the event, together with technological innovation and celebration of Emirati heritage. Three main pavilions, joined by a central plaza called al Wasl – a historic name for dubai which means 'the connection', will be divided into separate areas for each participating country. The whole site will be nearly self-sufficient, thanks to innovative photovoltaic fabric used to cover the pavilions and walkways. Over 25 million visitors are expected to come to dubai for this event and the city is investing billions in creating new landmarks and infrastructures to woo the world with. The reasons to attend the most international of all fairs are many. Expo gives you the possibility to get a taste of the best of the entire world with only one trip. You will also explore dubai in its greatest shape ever, as new infrastructures, new tourist destinations and new monuments will be created, as well as world-class events, concerts and exhibitions planned. if you are a businessman, this is a great chance to network and discover what other countries have to offer in terms of export and unique production. Thanks to the innovative, groundbreaking work of Dubai Design District (d3), the region is thriving, with globally acclaimed fashion events being held throughout the year. Fashion Forward (FFWD) is also making waves. This year’s April show, featuring 18 top designers, was sponsored by some of the world’s foremost design institutions, including Jumeirah; MAC; University of the Arts, London. From 30 october to 1 november, the second Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience (in partnership with Vogue Italia) will be held at The Dubai Mall. Stays & Plays: Fashion editors, models and muses will be found in the upcoming Palazzo Versace + Restaurant (under construction), the forthcoming Bulgari hotel, the Burj Khalifa’s Armani Hotel or the Fendi apartments by Damac. This season welcomes BFC Headonism, a showcase of the UK’s emerging talents in millinery. The Abbey Road zebra crossing in the leafy St John’s Wood area of London has to be one of the most iconic road crossings in the world. Ever since The Beatles posed for their record cover on the crossing – a stone’s throw from their recording studio – it has been a hit. Today, 45 years since the launch of the famous Abbey Road album, Beatles fans continue to flock to the crossing to walk in the footsteps of John, Paul, George and Ringo, recreating the pose of the equally famous photo of the Liverpudlian group, taken by Ian Macmillan. Since the release of Abbey Road in 1969, it’s estimated that millions of people have visited the location to pay tribute to the ‘Fab Four’. Some 200,000 people from all over the world are reckoned to visit the crossing annually and as the number of fans continues to grow the local authorities are having to consider deploying additional traffic wardens and even a ‘lollipop lady’ to ensure that the sheer numbers of these die-hard music-loving pedestrians do not create problems… The old adage used to be ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. More recently we have been advised to eat five or even more fruit and vegetables a day in order to keep in tip-top condition. Now it seems, the humble tomato may hold the healing key to good health and longevity. According to research conducted at Britain’s prestigious Cambridge University, a lycopene-enriched tomato pill supplement could be the boost that we need to give us the effects of a Mediterranean diet in a single pill – which is said to contain as much lycopene (the pigment that gives the fruit its juicy red colour) as one kilogram of tomatoes. For decades we have attributed the Mediterranean-style diet, rich in olive oil, fruit and fish, as well as the lycopene found in tomatoes, to be partly responsible for higher levels of cardiovascular health in the Med’ area. Early research indicates that consumption of the ‘Ateronon’ pill has a positive effect on the blood vessels of heart attack survivors, angina sufferers and those with other cardiac issues. It appears that taking the pill leads to a widening of blood cells and improved blood flow. Further studies are still required to determine whether or not the non-prescription pill can actually reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Unfortunately, the tomato pill is not a miracle and will be a supplement to other medication and a healthy diet. It is not a cure in itself. The big question in the motorcycle world now is whether die-hard bike riders are going to buy into Harley-Davidson’s first electric model. Test-riders are currently zooming along the US’s famous Route 66 on the latest Project LiveWire eco-bikes that bring together innovation and technology. They’re participating in a project designed to allow riders to experience the new proposition and offer their feedback, which will help determine whether or not the new motorcycles will be officially put on the market for sale. While the styling and speed of the bikes don’t seem to be so much of an issue with Harley aficionados, the greatest obstacle for the designers is to recreate the ‘potato-potato’ sound synonymous with and unique to the Harley. A spokesperson for the company said: “The sound is a distinct part of the thrill. Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier. The unique sound of Project LiveWire was designed to differentiate it from combustion and other electric motorcycles.” As the electric car continues on its fast-evolving route to acceptance, the electric Harley is poised to lead the way when it comes to the enduring thrill of a technology-enhanced freedom ride Harley-Davidson into the future… dv SEPTEMBER 2014

Warm, inviting, elegant and exclusive, the lounges ensure there is a wealth of tranquil comfort zones available to the weary traveller within its airports’ bustling premises. In this issue we take a walk through the superb lounges at Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC). EMIRATES LOUNGES Emirates’ First and Business Class lounges at DXB’s Concourse A have made headlines again –after travellers across Middle East and North Africa voted the lounges as the best in the region at the annual World Travel Awards 2014. Back for good dubai international returned to full operation on July 21, following a major runway upgrade project involving both its runways, with a 31 per cent rise in flight numbers marking the reopening, and traffic running smoothly. all airlines that temporarily moved their flights to al Maktoum international at dubai World Central (dWC) have now returned to their original location – these include flydubai, Malaysian airlines, Royal brunei and PaL Express – as have selected flights from Qatar airways and Gulf air. Four airlines will continue to offer flights from dWC: Wizz air, Gulf air, Qatar airways and Jazeera airways. both the Southern and Northern runways at dXb were closed consecutively from 1 May for an 80-day period to undergo renovation, essential to accommodate more aircraft while improving operational flexibility during busy periods. The project involved the resurfacing of the entire 4,000-metre long Northern runway, as well as the upgrading of runway lighting, and construction of additional taxiways and rapid exits on the Southern runway. The upgrades involved the use of 800,000 tonnes of aggregates, 11,000 airfield lighting luminaires, 1,050km of cabling, 1,750 new manholes and 8.3km of drainage piping. These refurbishments are part of dubai airports' uS$7.8 billion (dhs29 billion) SP2020 master plan, which aims to expand dubai international’s annual capacity to more than 103 million passengers by 2020.
Passenger traffic at dXb rose to 34.68 million during the first half of 2014 - up 6.2 per cent on the same period last year, despite the runway refurbishment programme cutting flights by over 26 per cent during May and June. in June, a total of 5.07 million passengers passed through dXb, the 18th consecutive month with more than five million passengers – down 8.5 per cent from the 5.54 million passengers of June 2013. in the same month, 22,031 aircraft movements were recorded, down 27 per cent from the 30,191 in June 2013, drop due to the planned traffic reductions during the airport's upgrade. as dXb is now fully operative, renewed growth is expected towards the end of the year. The first six months of 2014 saw 170,815 recorded aircraft movements, down 6.6 per cent from the first six months of 2013. as airlines, in particular Emirates, used larger aircraft, passenger-per-aircraft movements rose 16.1 per cent, to 235 – a significant increase from the 202 recorded in the same period last year. as all dedicated freighters were moved to al Maktoum international at dWC, cargo volumes at dXb in June dropped to 180,025 tonnes, down 14.3 per cent from the 210,134 of June 2013. in the first six months of 2014 freight volumes fell to 1.18 million tonnes, down 1.8 per cent from the 1,20 million tonnes in the first half of 2013. 30

New coNNectioNs a major rise in traffic at al Maktoum international at dWC was registered in the second quarter of 2014, following the temporary relocation of 600 flights per week from dXb. Flydubai, Malaysian airlines, Royal brunei, PaL Express, Qatar airways, Gulf air, Jazeera airways, and East Horizon were among the airlines that temporarily relocated: between april and June, dWC recorded 475,992 passengers - a sharp rise from the 102,137 of the first quarter. Freight volumes registered just under 200,000 tonnes, up 308 per cent from the 48,955 of the same period in 2013. Year-to-date freight volumes reached 276,567 tonnes, up 169 per cent from the 102,929 during January-June 2013. This spike is a result of the transfer of all Emirates SkyCargo freighter operations to dWC in May 2014, following a similar move by Cathay Pacific, Qatar airways, Ethiopian airlines and Cargolux. aircraft movements in the second quarter of 2014 rose to 13,697, up 123 per cent from the 6,133 in the same period of 2013. Year-to-date flight movements reached 23,662, up 131 per cent compared to 10,237 during the first half of 2013.

SMILES ALL AROUND Hand-made pieces created by students of the Al Noor Training Centre for Children with Special Needs are on sale at Dubai Duty Free (DDF). The airport retailer has renewed their support to the organisation by choosing products from their Smile n'Stuff range, available at the centre's gift and coffee shop. The unique pieces are created by children with cognitive disabilities between the ages of 14 and 18, and helps not only to fund-raise for the centre, but also brings to the forefront the issue of empowering persons with disabilities. DDF has been collaborating with Al Noor since 2006, when their creations were first placed at the DDF souvenir shops. The enthusiastic support has been just increasing year after year: in 2007, Al Noor was acknowledged as one of DDF official suppliers; in 2009 it was assigned a dedicated shelf space with signage and a write-up display to educate and promote the customers about the Centre and its Vocational and Training programs. The order demand increased in 2010 and 2011, with the items promoted by headers carrying the Smiles n’ Stuff logo. As a part of their ongoing commitment of supporting and promoting the Al Noor cause, the Centre has been allocated an exclusive display of their products on a purpose-built gondola strategically located on Concourse A at Dubai International. F
alconry has always been an essential part of the traditional Bedouin culture, and is today still a great passion of Emiratis. Abdul Aziz bin Sultan Al Ali – or Bu Soud, as friends call him – has been a falconer for most of his life. After retiring from his job in the police, he is now on the board of the Fazza Championships for Falconry and a keen participant in the races. Organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center – institution protecting the UAE's traditional and cultural heritage – the Fazza Championships are the only official falconry racing championships in the world. Sponsored by HH Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, these popular events – which are free and open to the public – are held every year in the Dubai area of Ruwayyah: last year's edition attracted over 3000 falconers from all over the GCC.
How long have you been a falconer for?
The old generations inspire the young ones: my sons all love falconry and on weekends we always go to the desert for training.
You have to exercise daily, to create a real bond between you and the bird, for instance by feeding him with your hands. It is important to be very gentle, to understand their nature. At the beginning, you will tie them to a 50-metre-long tether, but when they start responding to you, you unleash them and they will always come back.
Has falconry changed throughout the years?
Do you travel with your falcons?
Yes, especially due to new technologies: today, for instance, we can track any falcon's position using a wireless sensor attached to its tail. Also, in the past falcons were mainly used for hunting, while now many are trained for racing.
Yes, I have been to Pakistan, Tanzania, Chad, Iran, Uzbekistan and more, where we go hunting.
Since I was 8 years old, and now I am 48, so for most of my life.
How is the passion for falconry transmitted in your family?
How do you get a falcon? Today you are no longer limited to what you can hunt here in the UAE: falcons are imported from all over Asia and Africa, but it is also very popular to have falcon farms.

How do you train a falcon?
I like the Shaheen and Saker falcons, but breed-wise, the pure Gyrfalcon is the best: it is said to be the fastest in the world. It used to live in the UAE but now it is very rare: it can cost up to Dhs1.5 million to buy one.
How do you carry a trained falcon on a plane? Falcons have their own passports, whose number matches their microchip. Many airlines allow trained birds to be free in the cabin. Falcons eat only once every few days, so if you feed them before flying, they will just perch next to you and won't move for the duration of the journey.
Where is the best place to see falcons in Dubai? Definitely at the Fazza Championships in Ruwayyah: Sheikh Hamdan's initiative means this is the only place in the world where you can witness falcon racing. dv
