The new Smart Gates make travelling in and out of Dubai even easier for UAE residents

No one likes waiting in queues after a long flight. It’s good news then that UAE residents can now use their Emirates ID to dash through the new Smart Gates at Arrivals and departures, cutting queuing time for everyone.

Dubai International is now home to a whopping 127 Smart Gates, which allow passengers to skip the passport process and

instead simply scan their Emirates ID card and get through with minimum fuss.

In one swipe the automated immigration gates can accurately and efficiently confirm a resident’s identity, travel plans and eligibility to enter and depart the UAE – and all with an average transaction time of 10 to 15 seconds.

A MACRO BREAK IN SPAIN SHA Wellness Clinic, L’Albir, Spain Few spa resorts have a reputation quite like SHA Wellness Clinic, on Spain’s Costa Blanca near Alicante. Founded by Alfredo Bataller Parietti in 2008, the retreat has welcomed A-list stars such as Naomi Campbell, Gwyneth Paltrow and even Russian president Vladimir Putin to its heady mix of macrobiotic detoxing and top-end luxury.

SHA was founded after Bataller Parietti, an economist, saw a doctor after receiving an early-stage colon cancer diagnosis. The doctor recommended a natural overhaul of the businessman’s lifestyle including diet and exercise. The change injected into Bataller Parietti’s life inspired him to create a space for others to do so.

“When you find something positive, you want to share it with others,” says his son, Alejandro Bataller Pineda, who himself beat debilitating migraines by converting to a macrobiotic diet. Perched high up in one of Spain’s most naturally spectacular spots, at the former Bataller family retreat, SHA offers a wide array of facilities including a fitness club, library, tennis courts and even a multifaith meditation room across more than 6,000 square metres.

Depending on guests’ requirements, they’re prescribed a bespoke diet and schedule of appointments that may range from acupuncture and mud wraps to fitness plans.

More recently the spa has begun offering brain training in the form of cutting-edge neurocognitive and stimulation programmes.

Last year SHA even opened a branch in Dubai, to cater for the growing number of converts to a place where you’ll return from holiday more relaxed and rejuvenated than possibly anywhere on earth. “Some people, like well-known models and actors, appear to be the picture of health, but come here to de-stress, find peace and readjust,” the elder Bataller recently told The National. “Other people are recovering from serious illness and they want to learn new habits.”

GET UPLIFTED IN INDIA Ananda-In The Himalayas, Narendra Nagar, Uttarakhand, India When seeking a spiritual replenishment, plenty of travellers choose India. And for obvious reasons: its mix of culture, relaxation and food is tough to beat.

But there are Indian spas, and there is Ananda, tucked high into the foothills of the Himalayas in a maharaja’s palace.

Ananda means bliss in Sanskrit, and there’s little of the hundred-acre resort that hasn’t turned its blissfulness up to a chakrapopping 11.

Older guests might remember Ananda’s milieu from the Sixties, when the nearby town of Rishikesh became the yoga centre of the world. It was where The Beatles came to seek cosmic refuge in 1968 at the height of their fame. The local scene has gone upmarket since the Fab Four were in town.

And there’s enough at Ananda to dry out even the most reckless of rockstar.

Immediately upon arrival (around a 40-minute drive from the incredibly-named Jolly Grant Airport) guests at Ananda are given a yogic timetable aiming to stimulate, invigorate and relax. Ananda’s principles are based on Ayurvedic medicine, a 3,000-yearold discipline stressing the balance between mind, body and spirit. Regular massages are de rigeur. So is a private butler.

It’s not all plain sailing, though: nakedness and nasal cleansing might deter more prudish spa-goers. But Ananda’s food is designed to get you back in shape – and its chefs will teach you how to make a variety of detox dishes including lentil curries and beetroot salads.

You’ll also find that this retreat has a unique setting. The luxuriant former residence of the maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, it was built in the 19th century and has hosted a variety of important figures including Mahatma Gandhi. Anand’s brilliant architecture and views across the state of Uttarakhand ensure a health resort unlike any other.

A FAIRWAY TO HEALTH IN ITALY Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort, Tuscany, Italy Italy can usually be trusted to provide some of the world’s most luxurious lodgings. And in Terme di Saturnia, it has a health resort that is as historic as it is stunning. The word spa itself is thought to be an acronym of the Latin phrase salus per aqua – health through water – and soul searchers have been coming to Saturnia since long before even Julius Caesar was Roman leader.

Just an hour north of the Italian capital, Saturnia is an easy stop between Rome and Tuscany’s many beautiful towns and villages.

It makes for an excellent post-city detox, too, and guests are given a biological age evaluation that includes everything from stress levels to complexion.

Then, a smorgasbord of spa therapies are offered including microdermabrasion and even Restylane injections to shed crow’s feet. The house special Saturnia DNA facial has become something of a byword in the beauty trade.

Saturnia’s own thermal spring might smell a bit eggy at first, but fear not: the great mists of sulphur that rise from its pools – where 37C water gushes at 500 litres per second – are a natural building block for collagen and great for the skin.

There are also waterfalls nearby in case you fancy a stroll among some of Italy’s more spectacular natural backdrops.

If you’re a golf lover then Saturnia should be high on your list of post-festive detox priorities. The resort boasts a 6,316m championship course set among 70 sweeping hectares in the Maremman countryside. So prized is the course that it was awarded a globally-sought-after GEO certification – which ensures its place among Europe’s best clubs.

So many of Thailand’s tourist sites have been oversaturated these days that it’s refreshing to encounter somewhere trying to stay hidden. That was the ethos architect Robert Powell embraced when creating Kamalaya, a resort inspired by Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple complex that is flung deep among the rainforests of Koh Samui, one of the country’s natural treasures.

So bucolic are Kamalaya’s surroundings that its manmade buildings appear like sudden apparitions. It is nestled in a valley split by a stream whose quiet air is punctured only by the rustling of trees and exotic birdsong. Club 18-30 it most certainly isn’t.

A SONG OF QUIET IN ICELAND Blue Lagoon, Iceland Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is not the most exclusive of retreats on this list. In fact it’s the Atlantic nation’s most visited attraction. But what the resort lacks in one-on-one care, it makes up for with an experience unlike any other on earth.

Located in a lava field on the southwest of the island, around 24 miles from capital city Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon is a rugged tangle of volcanic rock and mineral-rich spring water, whose silica and sulphur are great natural healers for a tired, post-winter body.

What: Cats the musical Where: Dubai Opera When: January 16 to 28 Joining the epic line-up at Dubai Opera this month is the legendary musical, Cats. Rum Tum Tugger, Mr Mistoffelees and the rest of the allsinging, all-dancing Jellicle Cats bring the epic musical to Dubai, adding yet another city to one of the most well-travelled shows in the world.

The show is celebrating its 35th anniversary and has reportedly grossed more than US$2.16 billion worldwide – not bad for a musical that was almost never made. The legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber had to take out a second mortgage in the late ’70s as he and producer Cameron Mackintosh couldn’t raise enough money to fund the show.

Critics were dubious about a musical based on a children’s poetry book, T S Eliot’s 1939 Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats. The story goes that the author’s widow Valerie gave Webber an unfinished poem that never made it into the book – Eliot had deemed it too dark for children – and from those few lines came the show’s starring role Grizabella and the song Memory.

A young Judi Dench was originally lined up for Grizabella the Glamour Cat, but had to pull out after tearing her Achilles tendon. So the role shot Elaine Page to fame and has since been played by an array of fabulous females, including Lea Salonga and, more recently, Nicola Scherzinger and Leona Lewis.

Cats defied critics by attracting sell-out audiences for decades, running for 21 years on the West End and 18 on Broadway, which made it the longest running musical on both at the time.

After several years away, the original team brought the musical back with new performers for a new generation of theatre fans, and now they’re heading to Dubai.

Dubai Airports becomes official supporter of Dubai Expo 2020 Dubai Airports is now an official supporter of Dubai Expo 2020 after signing an agreement with the Bureau Dubai Expo 2020 last month.

The Memorandum of Understanding will ensure a world-class experience for the millions of guests that will visit Dubai during the event, by creating an ‘expo experience’ inside the airport, which will set the tone for visitors and entice transfer passengers to return or stopover.

“Our Expo will welcome the highest proportion of international visitors in World Expo history, and Dubai Airports will be a vital supporter in welcoming those visitors and giving them their first taste of this extraordinary host city,” said HE Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Bureau Dubai Expo 2020 Director General.

In line with its DXB Plus programme, the airports will also work to ensure minimal queuing and fast and convenient passage through both airports.

Dubai Airports recently launched two major projects what will provide the capacity needed to Expo 2020 and beyond.

The first, DXB Plus, will boost capacity to 118 million passengers by 2023, while the second will see Dubai World Central’s passenger terminal building expanded from the current five million passengers a year to 26 million by the end of 2017.

Capacity gains and service enhancements

will be achieved though streamline processes and new technology.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said, “We are always looking at ways to enhance the experience for the millions of customers that pass through our airports each year.”

As part of the DWC expansion, the check-in area, baggage and immigration halls, as well as security screening area will be substantially expanded, while the parking and drop-off areas will also be improved.

Once complete the passenger terminal will provide a total of 24 boarding gates, 7 baggage reclaim carousels and 104 checkin desks.

“With the programmes we have underway, and our partnership with the Expo 2020, we are well on track to support what we know will be a fantastic event that showcases the innovation, collaboration and customer service that has become the hallmark of Dubai and the UAE,” added Griffiths.

Dubai Duty Free Celebrates 33 Years of Retailing Success Passengers to Dubai International and Al Maktoum International took advantage of a special 25 per cent discount at Dubai Duty Free in December, across three days that totalled more than Dhs161.817 million (US$44.33 million) in sales.

The offers were in celebration of Dubai Duty Free’s 33rd anniversary and ran from midnight on December 18 to midnight on December 20. The annual celebration lined up well with the high passenger traffic over the pre-Christmas holiday weekend.

On the first day alone, sales at Dubai Duty Free across both airports reached Dhs35.29 million (US$9.67 million), while December 19 clocked Dhs32.88 million (US$9.01 million).

The anniversary day itself falls on December 20, which this year saw sales reach Dhs93.64 million (US$25.6 million).

“The anniversary celebrations spread over three days were fantastic and received positive

results across all the concourses. The 25 per cent discount to our customers is our way of saying thank you for their support through the year.” commented Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin.

Perfumes were the biggest selling category this year, with sales of Dhs25.30 million (US$6.93 million), followed by watches and cosmetics on December 20.

The till transactions alone show how busy Dubai Duty Free was, with a total of 293,903 sales transactions over the three days.

As part of the celebrations, there were cakecutting ceremonies and two winners were announced when DDF officials, headed by McLoughlin and COO Ramesh Cidambi, and other senior officials conducted a Millenium Millionaire and Finest Surprise draw.

Pakistani national Saad Khan won US$1 million in the draw, while Prajwal Raj Paudel from Nepal won a Ducati Monster 821 Star White Silk.

Dubai Duty Free’s employees also enjoyed a special Staff Surprise draw, resulting in a total of over US$23,000 being won by employees.

In the Ladies division, Naema Mayam was named overall local winner for the second year with two solid scores totalling 67 points. While Nancy Miller managed to secure victory in the overall visitor winner category for the third year in a row with a whooping 74 points.

A total of 64 points saw Gunther Becker claim overall super senior title, while Clarke Francis took the senior winner with 77 points.

The Chinese New Year is here and the ancient celebration is a time for giving. But the art of Chinese gifting can be fraught with cultural dangers. Here’s how to get it right Words: Sean Williams

T

his year, the Chinese New Year falls on January 28, and welcomes the end of the Year Of The Monkey, and beginning of the Year Of The Rooster. Each zodiac animal brings with it traditionally lucky flowers, and the rooster’s fortunate flora are gladioli and the aptly-named cockscombs.

But whether you should give flowers at Chinese New Year is another matter. Chinese gifting is steeped in ancient, Confucian tradition and forms a pillar of the country’s attitudes towards respect for elders, harmony and the importance of friends and family.

Nobody knows for sure when the tradition of the Chinese New Year began. Most people believe it emerged during the Shang Dynasty period, between 1766BC and 1122BC. Some 40 DUBAI VOYAGER

think it started even earlier than that, under the tenure of the legendary Emperor Yao and Shun, around 4,300 years ago.

Whatever the actual date, the New Year – known as ‘Spring’ in China – is a cornerstone of Chinese culture and is now celebrated worldwide, with fireworks, parades and lantern lighting. According to legend the event began with the fight against a mythical creature called Nian, a sea-dwelling, lionheaded ox (hence the modern lion dances associated with the festival). But today, gifting is as much a tradition at New Year as anything else. For those without the heritage, navigating it can often be something of a cultural minefield.

Chinese people keep a close eye on how many gifts they give or receive: a facet of

li shang wang lai, or ‘courtesy demands reciprocity’. This mantra is engendered in almost every aspect of Chinese life, including gifts. Should you shower a friend, family member or colleague with too many gifts, they will likely consider it bribery. So make sure to keep tabs on your gifting or you may well be eyed with a fair dose of suspicion.

Similarly giving large amounts of cash – as well as expensive electronic equipment, cars or even company shares – can also give you something of a bad reputation.

Timing is important, too. You must return a gift, such as dinner with friends or a gift for a child, in a reasonable amount of time.

And make sure you don’t under- or outdo someone: the value of a reciprocal gift must be kept similar to avoid accusations of

Of course, westerners will not be held to as high a gift-giving standard as their Chinese counterparts, but it’s important at least to try. A good way to endear yourself locally may be to give something unique from your homeland that no-one could get in China.

Colours are a big part of tradition, and picking the wrong one can land you in trouble. Never wrap something in white, as it’s the colour associated with funerals. Black and blue are both no-nos, as they represent death. The best choices are red, yellow and gold – they’re associated with prosperity.

Gift-giving etiquette also extends to the numbers with which your gift may be associated. The number four, for example, is normally off-limits as the way it is pronounced is very close to the word for death. The luckiest number in China, meanwhile, is eight. A double-eight is even luckier, which is good to know for moneybased gifts.

When giving or receiving a gift, always use both hands. This tradition has fallen away in many corners of Chinese etiquette, but it’s going strong with gifting and signifies respect and appreciation.

When it comes to cash, avoid giving people old, dirty or torn notes. Many people will spend days, or weeks, withdrawing crisp notes from the bank ahead of the New Year to avoid this. And when you do find a wad of

new yuan, make sure to give it to the oldest member of a family first. Respect for elders is a huge part of Chinese society. Shirking it is a huge faux pas.

Other dubious gifts include sharp objects, which may signify a wish to cut off your relationship with someone; shoes, whose name is close to the Chinese word for evil; and handkerchiefs, which are traditionally waved at funerals and thus should be avoided. Cut flowers are another traditional funeral gift. And mirrors, which can be easily broken anyway, are a bad idea throughout Asia as they are believed to attract malevolent spirits.

As much as many gifts are shunned in China, there are many your Chinese friends and family will be delighted by. Tea, fruits (but not pears, whose name is similar to that for parting), alcohol and tobacco are good gifts for friends – so long as they drink and smoke, of course. Clothing is generally preferred by senior recipients, while kids will enjoy sweets, schoolbooks and toys.

A final point of note is that Chinese gifts are opened later, and in private. Do not open a gift as soon as it is given to you: doing that alone is a mark of respect to he or she who gave you the gift. Got all that?

Then it’s time to party. And few festivals are marked in quite the same spectacular style as the Chinese New Year. Especially if you’re deemed an expert gift-giver.

From Januar y to Februar y, the ripe Marulas are collected by rural women. The fruit is fermented into a Marula wine that is then double-distilled to make a Marula spirit and aged in French oak barrels for two years. Fresh dair y cream is added to create the deliciously velvety-smooth Amarula Cream.

Reasons to run W hy t h e D u b a i Ma rat h o n i s t h e p e r fe c t s t a r t to t h e ye a r It’s fitting that the Dubai Marathon is held in January. This ultimate effort of endurance and bucket list goal to thousands is positioned slap bang at the beginning of the year, so if you’re taking part you’re a fine example of how to start 2017 as you mean to go on.

Of course, this is the Middle East and it’s January, the coolest month of the year. The weather plays its part in the race timing – but then why ruin a 66 DUBAI VOYAGER

perfectly good inspirational opening statement just because of common sense?

This race can be the perfect start to a year of achievement. That’s the takehome message here.

If you’re involved on January 20, it’ll be the culmination of months of hard work – in fact it’s often said that the training is harder than the race itself.

Kilometre after kilometre clocked up day after day as you work towards the goal of 42.195km. For the majority, victory lies in just completing the distance at all. But for the few, some staggering performances of physical performance are the order of the day.

Consider this: when you’re on the treadmill at the gym, many workouts will ask you to push it to the maximum speed (most likely 18kmph) for the final minute of the workout. You then spend the next ten flat on your back gasping for breath.

Last year’s Dubai Marathon was won by the Ethiopian Tesfaye Abera in two hours, four minutes and 24 seconds. If you sprinted on your treadmill at its top speed for the same amount of time, you’d still come up 4.95km short.

For any aspiring runners flying in, the bad news is that you’ve missed the cut for this year’s event. But you can still head down to cheer people home. It genuinely does help, so position yourself at the finish line on Umm Suqueim Road next to the Police Academy Failing that there are roughly 500 marathons around the world each year, so if you’re a regular traveller then perhaps try and plan your trip to coincide with one? Fly in for business, run 42.195km, fly home. The challenge has been set.
