Save time at security Put anything metal – watch, jewellery, mobile phone, coins, belt – into your hand luggage before you arrive at security screening. It’ll save you time.

Pack away your liquids It’s best to pack liquids, aerosols and gels in your check-in baggage. If you need them as carry-on, make sure they’re in a clear resealable plastic bag and not more than 100ml each (for a total of one litre).

Get there early

Queue jump

Aim to arrive in good time. Leave a minimum of three hours for check-in and immigration. This gives you time to explore the airport’s restaurants and shops.

Beat the lines by checking in online (where available) or using the self-service check-in kiosks in the departures hall.

Check with the airline in advance for information on baggage allowance. You’ll be charged for baggage that’s in excess of the limit set by your airline.

Using the e-Gate card helps avoid queuing at passport control, both while arriving and on departure. You can get one from the General Directorate Of Residency And Foreigners Affairs (immigration) for a fee.

They have eGate offices in the departure areas of all terminals.

Essential information to help you make the most of Dubai Airports

Medical facilities

If you’re unfortunate enough to be taken ill at the airport, there are world-class facilities and response teams on hand 24 hours a day. Here’s what you can do…

Business centre A business centre and meeting rooms are available at Dubai International Hotel, located on the arrivals level in Terminal 1 and the hotel level of Concourses A and B in Terminal 3.

Get free Wi-Fi

Boingo Wireless manages and operates Wi-Fi services at both Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC). Passengers are able to receive 60 minutes of free Wi-Fi access, allowing them quick and easy access to their email, social networks and favourite entertainment content. Simply select the “DXB Free Wi-fi” or “DWC Free Wi-fi” networks to connect.

Children’s play area

If you’re travelling through DXB with family and kids, head to the family facility at Concourse B. Located between gates B7 and B8 you’ll find a children’s area complete with play equipment, TV screens with children’s programming and baby changing rooms.

There’s a climbing area and interactive game zone as well as baby changing facilities.

Smoking lounges

You can’t smoke in public areas, but there are dedicated lounges throughout both airports.

If you’re in Terminal 1 head to gates C9 and C23. At Terminal 2 you’ll find them near the departure area. Finally, at Terminal 3 they’re located at gates A2, A23, B7 and B27.

What: Middle East Film And Comic Con Where: Dubai World Trade Centre When: April 7 to 9 Dubai may have a reputation for glamorous restaurants and glittering night life, but a trip to the Middle East Film and Comic Con will reveal a very different side to the emirate. Comic book and sci-fi fans will be flooding to the region’s largest Comic Con this month as it takes over the Dubai World Trade Centre once again for an entire weekend.

Just walking into these events is an experience, and after the costumes – and we’ll get to that later – the best thing about them are the celebrities. Christopher Lloyd, otherwise known as Emmet ‘Doc’ Brown in the classic ’80s trilogy, Back To The Future, will be in Dubai ready to chat flux capacitors and time travel. However, the biggest news might just be that Mr Marvel himself, Stan Lee, will be answering questions via live video streaming. Facing south from the cliff tops that mark the entrance to Wadi Darbat, the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean lies before us. It laps at the shoreline of the Salalah coastal plain, heading east towards India and west towards Jabal Al Qamar (the Moon Mountain), where broad sandy beaches give way to jagged cliffs that rise spectacularly from the ocean floor.

To the north, the Al-Qara Mountains advance towards the Empty Quarter, while inland and to the east lies Jebel Samhan Nature Reserve, home to the rare Arabian leopard and plateaus punctured by deep gorges and narrow ravines.

During the khareef season, when the monsoon rains hit Salalah between midJune and September, all around us would be as lush and green as the rolling hills of England. The sky, filled with mist and cloud, would empty itself of rain and form rivers and waterfalls, and a climate far cooler than the scorching summers of the Arabian Peninsula.

Now, in the winter of mid-January, the wadi remains patchily green and peppered with wandering cows. Many of the river beds are dry and cracked, while trees of immense stature are set like giants in the wadi basin. Camels are everywhere; on the steep inclines of hills, in lakes, under trees. Somewhere nearby is the Tawi Atair sinkhole, or ‘the well of the birds’, falling to a depth of 210 metres. At the end of the wadi, and up a steep rocky path, cave walls are adorned with paintings of camels and other animals.

A short while earlier we had stopped to take photographs as an elderly man, sitting alone beneath a tree, shouted his objection. He spoke in a language we hadn’t heard before. “Jibbali,” explained our guide. Dhofar is sprinkled with Modern South Arabian languages. They are spoken in the mountainous regions of western Oman and across the border in war-torn Yemen. They simultaneously signify uniqueness and diversity in a region known for conformity.

From our original vantage point at the entrance to Wadi Darbat we could see the landscape of Dhofar and the Salalah coastal plain, softened by the tropical nature of its climate. Plantations of banana, coconut and papaya dot the 40

Beaches From dramatic rugged coastline to picturesque sunbathing spots, Salalah has its fair share of beaches...

Mughsayl Beach Around 45km from Salalah city, Mughsayl Beach is where the mountains meet the sea. It is not only home to one of Oman’s most dramatic beaches, but also to a series of blowholes, where jets of seawater shoot into the air, often up to 30 metres high.

landscape. They flank the roads that zig-zag from Salalah, past Taqah and eastwards towards the coastal town of Mirbat, where once a battle was fought during the Dhofar Rebellion.

Water from Wadi Darbat feeds the creek at the ancient port of Khor Rori below, 40 kilometres to the east of Salalah on a hilltop on the eastern bank of a sweetwater outlet. The ruins of the small fortified town, once part of the ancient kingdom of Hadhramaut, form an integral part of the Unesco-listed ‘Land Of Frankincense’, which includes the Boswellia trees of Wadi Dawkah and the remains of the caravan oasis at Shisr, sometimes thought to be the location for the lost city of Ubar.

Frankincense, of course, is what made Oman famous, and Dhofar is its primary natural source. More valuable than gold, it was once the most sought-after commodity in the ancient world, but has since become greatly reduced in value. And yet it is still cherished. An ornamental tin filled with the aromatic resin is handed to us as a gift during our stay and burns beside me.

We sleep and sunbathe by the sea. With the Al-Qara Mountains set as an imposing backdrop, the Salalah Rotana Resort is slightly to the west of Taqah. Its feet dip into the Indian Ocean and an elaborate network of manmade Venetian waterways connect the property to the sea.

It is from here that we head out in search of dolphins along a shoreline dotted with coastal inlets. The further from human development we travel, the more rugged and appealing the coastline becomes. Occasionally, a lone swimmer is spotted amid craggy rock formations, while pods of dolphins slowly appear before strengthening their presence. They swim beside us in formation, breaking the surface with steady rhythm before disappearing and re-emerging further away. Every now and then they leap into the air, but never when our cameras are poised and ready.

Salalah is defined by the beauty and grandeur of nature. Arid and bleached, it is nevertheless the most fertile area of Oman, with its temperate vegetation and birdlife disturbing the mundanity of parched earth and rock. In the aquamarine sea, large shoals of sardines dart between my partner and I as we swim along a broad and expansive beach-front. At 29 degrees celsius, the weather is perfect.

On our last night we dine by the sea at a table for two. A path made of small lanterns has been created in the sand and leads us towards the sound of softly crashing waves. We toast Salalah and dine from a menu created especially for the occasion, and make a vow to return, if not for the khareef, then for the tranquility of a quiet and blissful land.

The 8.2km beachfront at the Salalah Rotana Resort is surrounded by some of Oman’s most breathtaking natural settings. Lined by palm trees and manned by lifeguards, this wide, expansive beach offers safe and relaxing swimming conditions.

Rakhyut Further west towards the Yemeni border is Rakhyut, home to a deserted beach and a small fishing village. It’s a sizeable trek from Salalah city, but worth it if you’re adventurous and a keen surfer.

Take advantage of the monsoon swells on either side of the khareef season.

The lights will help get passengers to their gates quicker

Improved taxiway tech Dubai Airports is making efforts to save time, fuel and emissions after adopting a new state-of-the-art technology, or ‘follow the greens’ airfield guidance system last month.

Along with the international technology giant Honeywell, this new Ground Traffic Management (GTM) system can help pilots safely navigate the runway taxiways in all weathers.

Previously, pilots relied on radio instructions from the air traffic control tower when visibility was bad, but the new tech

Jet Airways now operates ten flights a day between India and Dubai

Jet Airways’ latest flight to Mumbai Indian expats in the region will be pleased to hear that there’s now an additional option to fly home after Jet Airways launched its latest flight from Dubai International (DXB) to Mumbai. The Indian airline now operates a total of ten daily flights between its home country and Dubai.

The departure of flight 9W557 was marked with a ceremony where the first passengers to check-in cut a ribbon at the Jet Airways check-in counters at DXB and were presented with a gift hamper.

Dubai International (DXB), already the world’s number one hub for international passenger traffic, is set to welcome even more as its capacity soared from 75 million to 90 million with the opening of Concourse D in February.

This is a result of a US$1.2 billion investment to enhance service and boost capacity for the more than 70 international airlines that will now call it home.

The first flight to be welcomed at the facility was British Airways’ flight 105. This historic first operation followed months of intensive testing and a successful operational trial involving 2,000 members of the public earlier in February.

“Aside from its many customer-centric features, Concourse D continues our legacy of providing timely capacity,” said Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports CEO. “Today we also announce our 2016 forecast which projects 85 million passengers will visit DXB this year.”

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2016 The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships are one of the highlights of the UAE’s sporting calendar and the 2016 tournament, run February 15 to 27, didn’t disappoint, delivering two weeks of action and entertainment.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament saw four of the world’s top ten players on court, including defending champion Simona Halep and former world number ones Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic. While the ATP tournament featured Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open and four-time Dubai Champion Novak Djokovic, twotime Dubai finalist Tomas Berdych and Feliciano Lopez.

This year saw Sara Errani overwhelm Barbora Strycova 6-0 6-2 to win the women’s event, as she dominated the most one-sided final in 16 years of the WTA event.

Baghdatis to win 6-4 7-6 (13) and claim the first Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title of his career.

Horseracing starts at Newbury Dubai Duty Free is turning its attention to horseracing as the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Meeting at Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire, the UK, kicks off this month, on April 15 and 16.

If this has ever worked for anyone, it would be amazing, but the fact remains that when you drag your not-upgraded self through Business Class to your seat in Economy, almost everybody in the former appears to be wearing jogging bottoms. Just what’s the message here?

It wasn’t always this way of course. In the 1950s, the Golden Age of Flying saw a rather more stylish traveller. Men wore suits and ties, women smart dresses and hats, it was indicative of a smarter time.

If you happen to be flying into Dubai this month, then you should really think on your outfit ahead of time. April sees Fashion Forward showcase the best of the autumn/winter collections of 2016.

It’s a pretty big deal in the region, and

although the vast majority of it focuses on womenswear, there’s a real buzz around the four days of catwalk shows, industry talks and big parties.

Of course, if you’re on the way out of the city and are set to miss out on the beautiful people, then make the most of your time at DXB and go shopping. Like most things at the airport, the options are absolutely staggering. Whether you want high-end or high street, we’re fairly confident that you can get yourself kitted out in something so stylish that they’ll be forced to upgrade you on arrival at your gate. Our advice? Get yourself some really expensive jogging bottoms. This, it seems, is the key to looking like a high class traveller.
