Queue jump
Aim to arrive in good time. Leave a minimum of three hours for check-in and immigration. This gives you time to explore the airport’s restaurants and shops.

GETTING AROUND So you’ve arrived in Dubai, but what next? Here are the best ways to get around the city
TAXI All terminals at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) have their own official 24/7 taxi rank. Your taxi metre will begin at Dhs25 (Dhs10 anywhere else in the city) and has a rate of Dhs1.92 per kilometre. Expect to pay Dhs60 from DXB to Downtown and Dhs110 to Dubai Marina. The pink-topped taxis have female drivers and are for women and families.
TRAM The tram starts near the Palm Jumeirah, travels down Al Sufouh Road past Media City and into the marina, where it loops around close to the beach at JBR.
METRO The Dubai Metro is clean, air-conditioned and linked directly to Terminal 1 and 3 with clear signposts. The trains run roughly every 10 minutes from 5.50am (10am on Friday) to midnight (1am on Thursday and Friday). You can buy your ticket at the station and the price will vary depending on how many zones you cross. Alternatively, buy a Dhs20 Nol card and top it up as you go. For Downtown and Dubai Marina head to the platform for UAE Exchange at DXB. From DWC the nearest station is Ibn Battuta Mall, which can be reached by bus or taxi.
1414 DUBAI VOYAGER VOYAGER • FEBRUARY 16
WATER TAXI ABRA Before the first bridges were built in the 1960s, traditional abra boats were the most efficient way to cross Dubai Creek. At just Dhs1 per trip, it’s a fantastic way to see the city, as well as cross from Bur Dubai’s Textile Souk to the Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira.
Skip the traffic and take to the sea by hopping on a water taxi from one of the many stations along the coast, from Jebel Ali Golf Resort to Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Al Mamzar. From Dubai Marina Mall to the Waldorf Astoria on the Palm Jumeirah, expect to pay approximately Dhs195. They’re available throughout the day and can be booked online in advance. gift boxes as an Eid gift. Well, we say Eid; it would more than likely be devoured during the first iftar of the month – only the brave could leave this untouched for 30 days. The idea behind the café is a simple one: shop for great luxury chocolates and then sit, relax and enjoy a hot drink and some chocolate. It’s an idea that probably takes on even more relevance once placed in a busy airport environment. Check-in, drop off your bags, and then head to Butlers and buy a gift box or two. After that, simply drink copious amounts of their award-winning hot chocolate until flight time.

What: Dubai Sports World Where: Dubai World Trade Centre When: June 5 to August 27 As the temperature in the city continues to rise, so too does the temptation to choose relaxing on the sofa. Thankfully Dubai Sports World is back and determined to keep the city’s residents and visitors active throughout the sweltering summer season. The fantastic indoor sports stadium is taking over the Dubai World Trade Centre for a sixth year and is open all day, even during Ramadan. The huge venue is an air-conditioned sports haven and packed with things to do. People can play football, take on friends at basketball, hone their tennis serve, try their hand at ping pong, perfect their BMX moves and go for a jog – all under one roof. You’ll also find mini cricket pitch nets, where amateurs and pros alike can practise their stroke, rugby pitches, a state-of-the-art gym and a 400-metre looped running track. While the track is free to use, make sure you book and pay for the pitches and courts beforehand. When the holidays come around, parents can register children for one of the many summer camps, allowing them to get to grips with all types of team sports, such as basketball, cricket and rugby. Sports World often holds special one-off activities too, run by some of their sporting ambassadors, which last year included UAE national footballers Ahmed Khalil and Habib Al Fardan, and female badminton and football player Muna Al Sahlawi. While the summer is always a perfect time to catch up on a boxset or two, thanks to Dubai Sports World, it’s no excuse to consign your trainers to the wardrobe for the entire summer.

dventure holidays usually involve people skydiving over glaciers or white water rafting on unpredictable waters. In Hanoi, just crossing the road is enough to get the adrenaline pumping. There are families of five crammed onto one motorbike, brides on the back of mopeds, teenagers with huge crates of chickens driving Vespas at top speeds, and more. They fly up, down and across one-way streets, completely ignoring pedestrian crossings and red lights, somehow rhythmically following the same haphazard harmony. But there’s more to Vietnam’s capital than the rush of motorbikes and the squeal of traffic – you just have to be brave enough to take the leap of faith and cross the road to find it.

As Emirates launches the first direct flight from DXB to Hanoi, we dive headfirst into the history of Vietnam’s buzzing capital city Words: Deborah Cicurel
The vibrancy of the perpetually busy streets combined with the beauty of its colonial architecture makes Hanoi the perfect place to simply wander. But for those who need a bit more direction, there are plenty of original ways to explore the city. Booking a tour with HanoiKids is a free and fun way to get to know the capital, with students volunteering their time to show you around any area you like, as long as they get to practise their English too. It’s a more intimate way of seeing the city through a local’s eyes. You can stroll through the grand boulevards of the French Quarter, where the French once erected buildings and streets reminiscent of 19th century Paris in the place of ancient Vietnamese monuments. Or discover the Old Quarter, home to narrow, crooked streets, lined with vendors keen to sell you everything from scarves and chocolates to furniture and even coffins. Half-hidden behind colourful stalls and merchants flogging their wares live centuries-old houses, temples and pagodas. The maze-like lanes between these relics mean discovering something unexpected is more than likely. Half the pleasure of Hanoi lies in discarding the guidebook and strolling around, stumbling upon an ancient temple you’ve never heard of, or people-watching from a French-style cafe. DUBAI VOYAGER

Culture Haggling over a pair of knock-off trainers at a market, slurping on street food you’ve never tried and even confidently crossing the road is all part of immersing yourself fully in Hanoi’s culture. However, if artful negotiation, culinary exploration and pedestrian near-death experiences aren’t quite your bag, you can get a more tranquil taste of Vietnam by waking up before sunrise and heading to the calm of Hoan Kiem Lake. There you’ll find everyone from old ladies practising tai chi to early morning joggers, all convening for an active start in the serene and beautiful surroundings. Even if you’re aren’t adventurous enough to rival a 90-year-old great-grandmother at tai chi, simply walking around the lake is a great way to get a flavour of Hanoi. You can take in just a few of the city’s significant landmarks, from Den Ngoc Son, a pictureperfect 14th century temple, to Thap Rua (or the Tortoise Tower), a three-tiered pavilion atop a tiny island, perhaps at its most beautiful at night, when its gleaming reflection shimmers delicately in the lake. Slightly macabre, but also worth a visit, is Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum. The striking marble building is home to the embalmed body of revolutionary communist leader Ho Chi Minh himself, who is visited by thousands every day keen to pay their respects.
Halong Bay Worlds away from the crazed energy of Hanoi – but only a couple of hours away by car – is Halong Bay. The breathtaking Unesco World Heritage Site is made up of thousands of tiny limestone islands rising majestically from the ocean. ‘Halong’ means ‘where the dragon descends into the sea’, and yet its fantastical name doesn’t do justice to its spectacular smattering of islands and endless beautifully lit grottos. Unlike so many of the world’s areas of natural beauty that have been weathered by tourism and construction, less than 2,000 people live on Halong Bay’s four fishing villages in quaint floating houses. This means the ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere you see – whether that’s cruising past in a boat or flying high above 40 DUBAI VOYAGER

shopping for food. The smell of freshly cooked noodles fills the air and the allure of all-night pho draws in tourists and locals alike. If you’d rather sit at a table and peruse a menu, there are plenty of more formal restaurant options too. The French-inspired La Badiane is set dreamily in a restored French villa and features both Asian and Mediterranean influences on its menu, while Cafe Phô Cô is tucked away on Hang Gai, across from Hoan Kiem, and is allegedly Hanoi’s oldest café. It’s so hidden that it’s hard to find, even if you’ve been there before, but once you climb the stairs, the reward – a bird’s eye view onto the frenzied streets of Hanoi – is well worth the search. DXB wins best airport award Dubai International (DXB) was named ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ at the Business Traveller Middle East awards in April. The category recognises the range and quality of services including check-in, security checks, luggage and customs as well as food and beverage offerings and shops on offer. “Dubai Airports continues to invest in state of the art facilities and services to elevate customer experience across our airports and
Passenger numbers skyrocket at Dubai World Central The passenger traffic at Dubai World Central (DWC) increased by 79.8 per cent in the first three months of 2016, according to a report by operator Dubai Airports. Dubai’s second airport welcomed 257,813 passengers from January to March, compared to 143,374 passengers in the same time in 2015. The sharp increase was spurred by demand on routes served by major carriers, including Flydubai and Qatar Airways, and increased frequencies. DWC is served by 16 passenger carriers, operating more 190 flights weekly to 25 destinations worldwide. “We are very pleased with the growth at DWC and expect the trend to continue”, explained Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports CEO. “The growth projection is based on two key factors. First is the planned move of Flydubai’s entire operation to DWC by end of 2017. Second is the sheer convenience of using the facility. It takes only minutes for passengers to get from kerb to gate and the arrivals process is similarly efficient.” 46

World’s largest plane stops in Dubai The world’s largest and heaviest plane touched down in Dubai World Central on its way from Perth, Australia on May 17. Measuring in at an impressive 84 metres long and 175,000kg, the Antonov An-225 has the largest wingspan of any plane in operational service. The mammoth aircraft started in Prague, where it picked up a 117,000kg generator, and flew to Australia, where it was greeted by crowds. On its return journey it stopped off in Dubai. The one-of-a-kind vehicle is called Mriya, which means ‘dream’ in Ukranian, and has been in service for 27 years. Its cargo compartment is reportedly big enough to hold up to 50 cars. 48

DDF Irish Derby becomes Ireland’s richest horse race Ireland will be home to the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival, which kicks off at The Curragh Racecourse, Co Kildare on June 25. Immerse yourself in Arabic culture as the holy month of Ramadan begins
54 DUBAI VOYAGER
June 2016
T
he holiest time in the Islamic calendar, Muslims will fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan; and while it might be a time for reflection and modesty, it’s also a time for joy, as people come together to break the fast. There are two main meals during Ramadan. The suhoor that takes place before sunrise, and the iftar that comes after sunset. This is always a time for family and friends and traditionally starts with water and some juicy dates. Other typical foods are fresh fruit and vegetables, halal meat, the tastiest breads and an amazing array of sweets and other Arabic delicacies. If you’re flying into the city this month, why not try one of the many iftars that, along with huge majlis [tents], spring up all around the city. To get a better idea of what it’s like, here are accounts from people around the world on what Ramadan – and the daily iftar – means to them…
Amad Mian Sharjah, UAE “I started fasting when I was seven – I’ve got three older brothers and the whole family was doing it. We’d finish school at about two o’clock and then go home and chill. That’s mainly what I remember, the family spending time together. Fasting actually makes me mellower – until about an hour before iftar and then I’m antsy. I often go to the kitchen to ask what’s cooking, because at that point you just want to eat everything. We have a mix of Arabic and Pakistani food and used to eat lots of fried food, but we’re more health conscious now. Personally, I always have insane cravings for lgeimat, those Arabic fried dough balls. We also always have meat samosas. I remember my mum sitting down and making them while I’d pick at the filling. One of my favourite Ramadan memories was when my dad and brothers were travelling and it was just me and my mum. We’d plan out our meals, sometimes eating out or going somewhere nice for dessert, and then we’d sit, drink tea and watch those Ramadan TV series – it was brilliant. For me iftars are all about family.”
Claire Taylor Jeddah, Saudi Arabia “My family aren’t Muslim, but my earliest Ramadan memories are probably being at the stables. During Ramadan my sister and I would have iftar with the grooms and go riding in the evenings. They were mostly Egyptian and I remember we’d have rice, bread and either goat or sheep and then sweet Saudi tea. We didn’t have iftar all the time, but traditionally it was just a meal, starting with some dates, bread or soup. Sometimes we’d go round to friends’ houses and there’d be a bit of a banquet; people wouldn’t leave until 2am. When I was little I’d crash out on the sofa. I remember my friend’s mum used to bring round these beef samosas; they were delicious and I’d eat about 10. I’m not sure how she did it, it must have been the spices. I did try and fast sometimes. We’d wake up really early and drink a litre of water before the sun rose. The problem was I was quite sporty – I swam nine times a week – so four days was the longest I managed before my coach advised me otherwise.”

Khaleda Rahman Birmingham, UK “Growing up where most people don’t fast, they’d associate Ramadan with hunger and thirst, but for me it’s also always the fattiest time. While we spend daylight hours depriving ourselves, with the sunset comes iftar and my mum’s epic cooking. I have the good fortune of having two parents who love to cook – and outdo each other – so iftar has always been a spectacularly greedy affair. When I was younger my eyes were always too big for my stomach. Iftar is a family affair, when everyone makes time and gathers to eat (and no longer be grumpy) together. With relatives encouraging me try this and that, I always look forward to very satisfying meals – each one starting with water and a juicy date. For our family, it’s then followed by the best of Bengali soul food, such as samosas, pakoras, kitchuri, kebabs, piles of pilau rice, tandoori chicken and, of course, my mum’s legendary chicken curry and dal. It all ends with a refreshing slice of watermelon or mango.”

Crowd pleaser W hy Eu ro 2 0 1 6 c a n m a ke t h e wo r l d a b e t te r p l ac e If you look closely around DXB this month, you’ll see them. Football shirt on at all hours and look of completely misplaced confidence in their eyes: the travelling football fan is on the move. As the masses head towards France for this month’s Euro 2016 tournament, you can sense the excitement levels slowly cranking up. On the face of it, it’s all 74 DUBAI VOYAGER
about the multi-million dollar prowess of Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and co. It’s about colossal sponsorship deals, endless ad campaigns, and hours of TV showing games, re-showing games, and dissecting the very minutiae of every moment of consequence. But behind the money lies something else. You see, football, at its most basic level, unites people – and who could argue that the world couldn’t do with a touch of unity right now? Never mind the action on the pitch, football is about the fans. Protests against ticket prices forcing people out of the game saw clubs drastically re-think their strategies last season as, no matter how talented the players, football played in an
empty stadium carries with it significantly less glamour. Former England manager, Sir Bobby Robson, explained it rather well when he said, “What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging…” If you’re travelling through DXB this month, you can experience that belonging firsthand at one of the many bars and cafes showing the action live. Simply pick your allegiance, get your shirt from Dubai Duty Free, and prepare to embrace the beautiful madness.
