LIGHT UP THE SKY The Hindi festival of Diwali falls on October 30 this year. Here’s how to make the most of the Festival of Lights

While Diwali is a Hindu festival, it’s celebrated by millions of people every year from different religions across India, South Asia and beyond. The meaning behind the festival varies from region to region, but the most enduring story is that it began when King Rama and his wife Sita returned to their northern Indian kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravanna in the 15th century BC. The festival is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. It also tends to be held in honour of Lakskmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and fortune. In fact, houses will light diyas (small clay lamps), welcoming the goddess into their homes – it’s no coincidence, Diwali literally means ‘rows of lights’.

Coinciding with the Hindu New Year, it’s always a big party and, spread over five days, it’s packed with sweets, prayer and lots of fireworks. Naturally an important time for Dubai’s Indian expat community, it’s when family and friends come together for an almighty celebration.

“For me Diwali is a festival that brings not only family but also friends together,” says 29-year-old Aishwarya Shiv. “Usually all the mums get together and prepare the evening feast while the husbands go grocery shopping and the kids decorate the home and plan games. Back home in India you’d usually spend Diwali with just your relatives, but in Dubai friends become part of your family.”

For 26-year-old Shilpa Abhilash, family celebrations also ring true. “My earliest

memory of Diwali is my mum asking me to light diyas around the house and at the entrance,” she says. “Mum told me they’d guide the goddess Lakskmi into our house – I was completely blown away and the house looked beautiful. Diwali celebrations are all about going back to tradition. We decorate the house with diyas, rangoli and set up the puja place, as well as making Indian sweets and snacks. Family and friends come over for puja and mouthwatering food, but most importantly we set off firecrackers. When we were in India we’d start bursting firecrackers at sunset and go on late into the night.”

Five days packed with family, food, fireworks and fun; if you’re in town for October 30 then it seems that you’ve planed your trip to perfection.

1. Crush the almonds and roast until light golden

Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes

2. Dry roast the gram flour in a heavy bottomed pan (like a kadai) at a low heat for five to ten minutes, stirring all the time to avoid burning. Add the ghee and mix. After a few minutes the flour will have a nutty fragrance. Keep stirring until you see ghee oozing out of the corners. Be sure not to burn it or undercook it, otherwise it’ll be bitter.

ach year for five days the Hindu world is bathed in light, as it celebrates an end to summer’s harvests and the victory of good over evil. But some places in India, where over 90 per cent of the world’s Hindus live, are more spectacular than others.

Here’s a guide to three cities, guaranteed to thrill and inspire at this year’s Diwali festival.

AMRITSAR The Punjabi city of Amritsar may be better known as the spiritual and cultural home of the Sikh religion, and its Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the religion’s magnificent epicentre, welcomes more visitors per year than the Taj Mahal.

But Amritsar is also a vital place of worship for Hindus: its gold-and-white Durgiana Temple is dedicated to the gods Durga, Lakshmi and Vishnu. And each Diwali, the northwestern city is flooded in light in one of India’s most breathtaking renditions of the ancient festival.

For Sikhs, too, the event is important.

It celebrates the release from prison of their sixth guru, Hargobind Sahib, in 1619 – and the martyrdom of Bhai Mani Singh, a guardian of the Golden Temple.

Jains, who number just 0.1 per cent of the city’s population, also see in Diwali with an emphasis on their religion’s commitment to non-violence.

Dal roti gear di, Diwali Amritsar di (‘Home-cooked food and Amritsar’s Diwali have no parallels’), goes the popular local phrase. Amritsar’s festivities live up to the billing. Tens of thousands of worshippers flood the Golden Temple complex, while the reflecting lake it sits in, the sarovar, is festooned with thousands of tiny oil lamps and candles laid out by revellers.

Visitors can expect an ear-cracking cacophony of fireworks and music that lasts for hours during Diwali celebrations. Eating DUBAI VOYAGER 25

is a huge part of the fun, too: the Guru Ka Langar is a feast prepared for up to 100,000 people within the temple confines. Other, heavier Punjabi delights can be had in abundance around the city.

Especially unique, perhaps, are Amritsar’s veggie dishes, which include chana masala and kulcha bread. But for meat-eaters there are plenty of options too, including chicken tikka tandoori, mutton and, for the more adventurous, a rich, hoof-based broth.

When the lights have died down Amritsar has plenty to keep visitors interested for days. A host of museums speak to the city’s difficult history. Food and village tours are worth joining to sample a slice of historic Punjabi life, and there are a host of other temples, palaces and natural beauty spots.

A 45-minute ride out of town is all it takes to reach the India-Pakistan border at Wagah, where every day guards conduct a lavish flag-raising and lowering ceremony involving the slamming of gates and a heap of bravado. Phones are prohibited and guests should be on their best behaviour.

JAIPUR Jaipur usually ranks pretty highly on a must-see list for any traveller to India. As part of the Golden Triangle it’s often visited alongside Delhi, India’s manic capital, and Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. Its home state of Rajasthan (Land Of Kings) is also home to the ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur and Udaipur, known as the ‘Venice Of The East’ and famed for its gorgeous city palace.

But it is sprawling Jaipur, the state’s biggest city, which draws the most tourists each year. That’s unsurprising given its protean wonders, many of which are daubed in the city’s iconic pink. As such colour plays a huge role in Jaipur’s Diwali celebrations, and its many attractions are drenched in a rich palette of neon lights and candles.

On the first day of Diwali in Jaipur, as is the case in many other Indian locations, locals begin cleaning homes and workplaces to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome.

By day three the entire city is awash with 26

the talismans of the festival, including diyas, or small clay lamps, and rangoli, a form of decoration in which patterns are created on the floors of homes from foodstuffs such as dyed rice, flour or petals.

Jaipur’s many markets play a big role in Diwali, too, and are decorated in an array of lights and adornments. Each year there is an award for the market that is most incandescent. The most famous of them is the Johari Bazaar (Jewellers’ Market), known by many locals as Jaipur’s ‘Las Vegas Strip’. But there are dozens of other labyrinthine locations catering to seemingly every product imaginable, including Handipura (kites), Chameli (silver) and Bhindon Ka Rasta (marble statues).

Don’t expect much respite in Jaipur unless you’re holed up in one of its luxury hotels: traffic is choking and its narrow streets are barely navigable without bumping into a myriad Jaipuris. But experiencing the city’s many iconic buildings, lit up amid the black of the Rajasthani night sky, is a marvel: don’t forget to see the Jal Mahal, Hawa Mahal and Birla Mandir in all their ornate glories while enjoying Diwali.

of Jaipur, and they’re a great way to experience as many of the city’s markets as possible. Other attractions include the Jantar Mantar, a collection of 19 astronomical monuments dating back to the 18th century, the Albert Hall Museum, housed in a magnificent Indo-Saracenic building, and the city’s spectacular forts: Amer, Nahargarh and Jaigarh.

While you’re there, once thing is for certain: Rajasthani food is not to be missed.

It is India’s largest state by land area, and there’s a huge range of dishes on offer.

meat and dipped in mutton gravy. Certainly not a dish for vegetarians.

SHIMLA Shimla, which lies on the edge of the Himalayas, was declared the British Raj’s summer capital in 1864, moving it away from Murree, which now sits in neighbouring Pakistan. Today the small, hilly city is a far cry from sweltering central

and south India, and makes an ideal spot for those wanting to witness some Diwali action without the fierce subcontinental heat.

Like many other places in India, Shimla celebrates Diwali with no small amount of passion. And during the festival all of its pretty hillside homes and historic sites are lit up by thousands of brightly decorated candles and lights. One of the most striking aspects of the city’s skyline during Diwali is that of the 1857 Christ Church, the second oldest in north India, illuminated above the humdrum of Shimla’s variegated neighbourhoods.

not even one per cent of locals follow the faith), Shimla is dotted with a variety of eye-catching temples – and owing to the city’s small size, it’s fairly easy to wander around them by day, before the evening’s festivities begin. Indeed, Shimla’s name is derived from Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the creation goddess Kali. Of its many places of worship, the Jakhoo, with its statue of Hanuman – the world’s tallest – is comfortably the most famous.

Visitors should make sure they take adequate winter clothing, despite the heat of the fireworks and thousands of lights: Shimla can get extremely cold towards the end of the year, and last year’s Diwali celebrations were marked by temperatures that dropped to 8.6C – hardly Himalayan, but enough for a layer or two.

Those happy to brave the cold, however, will be treated to one of India’s most unique, and iconic, places. Shimla is littered with grand buildings from the Raj era including the mock-Tudor Town Hall, Public Library and Rashtrapati Niwas, or Viceregal Lodge, an intricate mansion and former resident of the British viceroy of India, the highest office in British-ruled India. It is now a beautiful botanical garden.

Shimla has no shortage of stunning scenery, too, including Shimla Glen and a range of camping options. The Kalka-Shimla Railway, a narrow-gauge route that twists and turns through 107 tunnels, 864 bridges and 60 miles of incredible mountain scenery, is such an impressive journey that in 1999 Unesco deemed it worthy of World Heritage

status. A single trip takes around five-anda-half hours – though truthfully, there’s not a huge amount of interest at Kalka itself, a town of some 30,000 people, in the adjoining state of Haryana.

Aside from the festival, the sights, the mountains and the history, no visit to Shimla is complete without sampling its renowned street food. Many are sweet and take cues from Britain and nearby Tibet. Tea, as such, is a must – not least for its taste, but to keep the winter breezes at bay.

What: Anoushka Shankar Where: Dubai Opera When: October 15 Anoushka Shankar counts the singer Norah Jones as her half-sister, is married to the Bafta-winning director Joe Wright, and used to call The Beatles’ George Harrison ‘Uncle George’.

However, her most noteworthy relation is her father, Ravi Shankar – the world-famous sitar player and composer who’s credited with single-handedly bringing traditional Indian music to the West and was the mentor and friend of George Harrison. Ravi was responsible for introducing Indian music to psychedelic pop – think The Beatles, The Stones and ’90s rockers Kula Shaker.

Anoushka, of course, is recognised as a world music superstar in her own right – having played on stage with her father since the age of 13, she’s had plenty of time to practise. Since then she’s received five Grammy nominations, released more than 10 albums and played the West Holts area at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

She’s known for pushing the classical Indian instrument way beyond its limits and giving it a contemporary twist. Her line-up at Glastonbury included both a bansuri (a traditional South Asian flute) and electronic drum kit, while her latest album Land Of Gold features British rapper MIA and German-Turkish singer Alev Lenz.

GETTING AROUND So you’ve arrived in Dubai, but what next? Here are the best ways to get around the city

TAXI All terminals at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) have their own official 24/7 taxi rank. Your taxi metre will begin at Dhs25 (Dhs10 anywhere else in the city) and has a rate of Dhs1.92 per kilometre.

Expect to pay Dhs60 from DXB to Downtown and Dhs110 to Dubai Marina. The pink-topped taxis have female drivers and are for women and families.

TRAM The tram starts near the Palm Jumeirah, travels down Al Sufouh Road past Media City and into the marina, where it loops around close to the beach at JBR.

METRO The Dubai Metro is clean, air-conditioned and linked directly to Terminal 1 and 3 with clear signposts. The trains run roughly every 10 minutes from 5.50am (10am on Friday) to midnight (1am on Thursday and Friday).

You can buy your ticket at the station and the price will vary depending on how many zones you cross. Alternatively, buy a Dhs20 Nol card and top it up as you go.

For Downtown and Dubai Marina head to the platform for UAE Exchange at DXB. From DWC the nearest station is Ibn Battuta Mall, which can be reached by bus or taxi.

WATER TAXI ABRA Before the first bridges were built in the 1960s, traditional abra boats were the most efficient way to cross Dubai Creek. At just Dhs1 per trip, it’s a fantastic way to see the city, as well as cross from Bur Dubai’s Textile Souk to the Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira.

Skip the traffic and take to the sea by hopping on a water taxi from one of the many stations along the coast, from Jebel Ali Golf Resort to Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Al Mamzar.

From Dubai Marina Mall to the Waldorf Astoria on the Palm Jumeirah, expect to pay approximately Dhs195. They’re available throughout the day and can be booked online in advance.

DXB entertains millions for Eid Dubai International (DXB) was a hive of performance art during the Eid Al Adha period, with live entertainment from Middle Eastern dancers, African drummers and a spectacular contact juggler.

More than one million passengers travelled through the airport between September 8 and 12, as travellers looked for a holiday escape during the Islamic holiday.

The entertainment formed part of Dubai Airports’ ongoing musicDXB initiative, with its own purpose-built stage around the B gates in Terminal 3.

In addition to the live performances, at the airport, passengers across terminals took part in a virtual reality game ‘Find Pedro’, with prizes handed out to hundreds of lucky winners.

Record passengers for July Dubai International welcomed a recordbreaking number of passengers with a historic high of more than 7.6 million in July, according to Dubai Airports’ monthly traffic report.

Passenger numbers totaled 7,616, 792 in July, which is a considerable 14 per cent surge from the 6,682,676 handled in the same month in 2015. Interestingly, Eastern Europe was the fastest growing

region, up 33.4 per cent, followed by Asia (20.8 per cent), and then Indian subcontinent (17.1 per cent).

“This summer was the busiest in DXB’s history with daily traffic averaging a quarter of a million passengers across the three terminals,” explained Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths. “We are pleased as much with the growth as we are with the way we managed service levels.”

Traditionally a strong market, India was a top destination country with 990,213 passengers, with the UK taking second place with 573,025 passengers.

Flights in July followed suit, increasing by 5.8 per cent to 35,832. The passengers per flight remained at world-beating levels at 220 during July, as the airport’s rising ratio of wide-bodied aircraft continues to drive airport efficiency.

Dubai Airport CEO wins Business Leader award Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths is celebrating after being named the Business Leader of the Year at the Gulf Business Awards, in September. He was also named the Business Leader of the Year for the aviation sector, in which he’s played an important role since becoming Dubai Airports CEO in 2007.

Over the past seven years, Griffiths has been involved in the opening of Terminal 3 and Concourse B in 2008, Dubai World Central (DWC) in 2010 and, more recently, oversaw the US$7.8 billion strategic plan 2020 expansion project. This concluded

Passenger numbers from January to June totalled 410,278, which is a considerable leap from the 209,989 recorded in the same time period last year.

Traffic there is mainly driven by flydubai, one of Dubai’s two flagship carriers, which operates 35 weekly flights from DWC. The airport is set to increase its weekly flights from DWC for the upcoming winter schedule.

Currently served by 17 passenger carriers, DWC operates an average of 174 flights weekly to 39 international destinations. The airport is also home to 34 scheduled cargo operators, which fly to up to 141 destinations around the world.

“Already one of the world’s top 20 international cargo hubs, we hope to see DWC play an increasingly important role for passenger operations as it undergoes expansion to accommodate 26 million passengers by 2018,” said Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports CEO. 42 DUBAI VOYAGER

He also continues to lead the development of DWC, which is being expanded to 26 million passengers capacity by 2018. The aim is that eventually it will be the world’s biggest airport with an annual capacity of 240 million passengers.

The award ceremony recognised Griffiths’ leadership skills in a variety of situations and in his acceptance speech, the CEO paid homage to the fire fighters whose speedy response, selfless dedication and bravery have saved lives.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began more than 30 years ago, when the American Cancer Society teamed up with Imperial Chemical Industries. From October 1985 to today, its aim has been promoting mammograms as the most effective way to fight breast cancer through early detection.

It wasn’t actually until October 1992 that the pink ribbon became an official symbol of breast health, when Evelyn Lauder (above right), the senior corporate vice president of Estée Lauder Companies, created the annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

Over the past 24 years, The BCA Campaign

has brought together women, men and families in every corner of the globe to enhance awareness, raise funds and inspire action in the fight against breast cancer.

The BCA Campaign’s leading partner is the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), a nonprofit organisation dedicated to advancing the world’s most promising research to eradicate breast cancer. Also established

by Evelyn H Lauder in 1993, it’s now the world’s largest private funder of breast cancer research and has accelerated major breakthroughs in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survival. Around

If you’re heading into the city this month, you should expect a liberal amount of treachery, intrigue, love, loss and laughter – and not just because the brunch season is back in full swing.

October sees the first volume of Shakespeare In The Sands, a series of special screenings of the Bard’s work at The Junction in Al Quoz.

his 400th anniversary, and a collected literary works that is woven into the fabric of the world we live in today; from modern day story-telling, to philosophy, to the English language itself.

While Globe to Globe, the two year round the world tour of Hamlet, garnered much of the headlines earlier in the year, the definitive celebration was undoubtedly The Complete Walk, which saw the iconic stretch of land between Westminster Bridge to London Bridge screen films dedicated to each and every one of his 37 plays.

Each ten-minute film features bigname actors and scenes filmed where Shakespeare imagined as he wrote them, so expect The Wire’s Dominic West, Bond girl Gemma Arterton, Cleopatra in front of the Pyramids, and Hamlet on the rocks of Elsinore.

Over the course of the next nine

months, Shakespeare In The Sands will screen all 37 short films, starting this month with volume one featuring A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Measure For Measure and more.

Not content with simply re-showing the films, however, the two-day event will also include panel discussions, workshops, monologues by guest artists and competitions. It’ll be a fully immersive Bard experience.

More than anything, it’s perhaps it’s the rather inscrutable nature of Shakespeare’s work that makes it so enduring. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on it, you re-read a line and suddenly discover a whole new meaning. Unfortunately the author’s not around to confirm or deny, so we’re all left to puzzle things out as best we can.
