Know your cork from your screw cap It’s not true that great bottles have a cork, or that screw caps are for cheap wines. In fact, screw caps are incredibly reliable. Come for: Stunning French dishes at a UNESCO site

S

et between northern and southern France and just a two-hour drive from Paris, Loire Valley was once a vast hub of strategic importance, with a slew of royalty and nobility descending on the area to build imposing castles and decadent, hedonistic palaces. Leftovers from these sumptuous days are still apparent, with grand châteaux and fortresses, elegant cupolas, imposing towers, and gleaming banquet halls dotting picturesque villages and vineyards. The area – which is, in fact, a rather large UNESCO World Heritage Site – isn’t just a pretty face, boasting impressive cultural and artistic depth across several of its lively towns and cities, including Orléans, Tours, Saumur and Angers.

If you’re looking to flex your culinary muscles here, start warming up. There’s a slew of magical high-end dining spots throughout the valley, and – bonus – they don’t all charge a small fortune. For those seeking contemporary best-value French fare in a former village café that is now a Michelin-starred restaurant, the Auberge du Cheval Rouge (30 Rue Nationale) in Chisseaux is the ideal choice. Chef Jacques

Guillaumat – who joined after heading the stove at Paris’ Le Meurice – creates a feast of delectable fare on the rustic-chic property. Must-tries include cromesquis of small gray snails on parmesan shortbread with parsley cream of garlic, and traditional soufflé with Grand Marnier and bourbon vanilla ice cream. Want everything? Opt for the three-course Discovery Menu for €31, or the two-course deal for €25.

When looking at an authentic French menu, never ignore the duck. The same goes for when you’re at the next foodie gem, L’Aigle d’Or (10 Avenue Adélaïde Riche) in Azay-le-Rideau. Jean Luc Fèvre’s detailed but modern French cooking builds its foundations on regional produce, with the prix-fixe menu offering gawpworthy value considering the impressive feast on offer. Bite into pleasingly savoury goats’ cheese tart garnished with both cooked and raw vegetables before sampling tender duckling glazed with strawberry vinegar, with the finale coming in the form of fragrant roast peaches paired with creamy pistachio ice-cream.

For something a little more laidback industrial, Café de la Promenade (1

Avenue du Général de Gaulle) – situated in the wine producing area of Bourgueil – is a beautiful look-twice inn set in an old gasworks on the edge of town. Serving up plates heaving with steaming homely fare, prepare to tuck into sumptuous and generous salads, proper quiche, and tarte flambée. Be warned: the must-try hambougueil – a perfectly cooked burger crowned with sautéed foie gras and dressed in onions deglazed in Bourgueil vino – could make you want to relocate to the area full-time.

So whether you’re after Southern-fried chicken, authentic sushi, handmade falafel or a big fat burger, NYC has you covered.

While choice is bountiful, you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to try something a little unusual. A fusion of Japanese and Peruvian food, Nikkei cuisine was first developed in the early 1900s by Japanese rail workers who immigrated to Peru. It’s a fascinating hybrid cuisine that’s hugely popular throughout New York today. Sen Sakana is the venue to go if you want the real deal with a gourmet twist. Whipped up by Peruvian chef Mina Newman and Japanese chef Taku Nagai, here you’ll find a beautiful feast proffering food fused from both countries. Think Causa Onigiris, a Peruvian potato version of the Japanese rice ball, and Anticuchos, the Peruvian version of robata, a grilled meat served as street food in Japan, among others.

The French involvement with New York goes back way before the Japanese arrived, with the Europeans’ discovery of the city actually being led by the French, when Giovanni da Verrazzano – an Italian explorer in the service of the French crown – came to town in 1524. that exudes authenticity from both sides, visit Mas Farmhouse (masfarmhouse. com). Destroyed by a fire in 2016, this now-revamped space – first established by chef-owner Galen Zamarra – features delightful fusion dishes, from roasted diver scallops in sweetcorn soup with summer truffles to yellowfin tuna l’occidental with beurre noisette and crispy shallots. We hear the Long Island duck breast dressed with beet and coconut purées, baby fennel and roasted turnip is wonderful, too.

Of course, while in New York you’re (almost) legally obliged try a hot dog and a bagel. Locals swear by the former found

at Katz’s Delicatessen (katzsdelicatessen. com), an iconic Lower East Side deli counter that’s been going since 1888.

Featuring a no-frills attitude, here you will bite into an all-beef frankfurter beautifully flavoured with garlic, salt and paprika.

While you’re there you should also try the pastrami sandwich that the place is famous for. For hot dogs with more historical significance, Nathan’s Famous (nathansfamous.com) is perfect. Set up in 1916, the former five-cent stand still does a roaring trade, with its hot dogs being a favourite of both New Yorkers and tourists.

For bagels, Ess-a-Bagel (ess-a-bagel.

com) is the spot to head to. Established in 1976, this place sells big, crusty bagels with cushiony insides – and you can choose from 18 types. Think sweet (apple cinnamon; blueberry) to savoury (cream cheese; sundried tomato; jalapeño). Absolute Bagels (2788 Broadway) is another great bagel purveyor, serving up to 16 perfect boiled bagel varieties that come with an array of toppings, from cream cheese to walnut-raisin and blueberry.

Come for: Rustic Mediterranean classics

pen a map and look at the boot that is Italy. See the easternmost ‘spur’ and ‘heel’?

That’s Puglia. One of Europe’s most impressive agricultural territories, the region’s stunning plains and rolling hills grow much of Italy’s olive oil, as well as enormous quantities of fruit and vegetables and the majority of the hard durum wheat used to make its pasta.

Once considered poorer than the rest of the country, many of the area’s old, culturally-rich peasant traditions are still followed – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially when it comes to the food.

While certainly less extravagant than other parts of the country, Puglian ingredients are anything but restricted.

Bordered by 800km of azure coastline,

here seafood is bountiful, ridiculously fresh and, being an agricultural hotspot, there is no shortage of it, with goat and sheep being on hand to provide dairy and meat, too. As is typical in most parts of Italy, pasta is a staple here, with Puglia’s most popular offering being orecchiette, also known as little ears (thanks to their shape). If one type of pasta just won’t do, there are many other varieties, including the more unusual. Think troccoli, cavatelli, stacchiodde, curti and gruessi, among others. In keeping with the simple theme, most pastas here are made using flour and water, with eggs once considered a luxury. If you’re trying orecchiette, have it with cime di rape – which literally means turnip top (that are actually more like leafy broccoli) sauce. Alternatively, feast

on any form of pasta alongside mussels (cozze), white beans (cicerchie), aged ricotta (ricotta forte), wild chicory, fennel, nutty grano arso (that literally means burnt grain) and tasty courgette blooms.

For home cooked food that is as authentic as it gets, head to the motherand-sons-owned Osteria Pugliese (Vico I Orto Nannavecchia 10) in Ceglie Messapica. While this area may be the poorest among the white cities, it’s well known for its wonderful food – and this reasonably priced establishment proves it.

Dine on fave e cicoria (beans and chicory) paired with peperoni (large mild chillies), among other delights, surrounded by locals. If you’d like to continue the people watching, Cicinedda Fruit Bistrot (Piazza Libertà 15) in Ostuni is the answer. About a 20-minute drive from Ceglie Messapica, this shabby-chic, but hugely charming, restaurant proffers fresh juices, as well as wonderful ricotta and vegetable platters.

One should never visit Italy without indulging in the finer things, and there’s no better place to enjoy a spot of sweetness than at Cremeria History di Vignola (Via San Quirico 28) in Cisternino, about 24 minutes from Ostuni. You will find a vast array of cheesecakes and sweet treats – like almond-based madorle atterrate – in this tiny but characterful café, with the former being crafted from recipes brought back from Germany by the family who own the establishment. Sit outside for gorgeous views across the plain.

Finally, for a magical feast from the sea with a steampunk twist, head about three and a half hours north to Trabucco di Montepucci (on the SS89 between Rodi and Peschici). Set in Montestrione, this is one of the oldest of Gargano’s trabucchi (offshore fishing platforms). Sit on the coast and dine on seafood hauled to land with an age-old system of pulleys and winches.

Travellers take on world’s top freestyler Passengers in DXB Terminal 3 got to kick around with the world’s top freestyle footballer – Red Bull athlete Sean Garnier.

Garnier showed off his plentiful skills in front of a packed crowd, many of which tried – in vain – to tackle him.

The Frenchman, a former professional footballer, was declared World Champion at the inaugural Red Bull Street Style World Finals in Brazil in 2008. He combines music, breakdance, somersaults and various football and basketball tricks in his entertaining routine.

Another record month for DXB Dubai International registered yet another month of record passenger traffic with 8.2 million people welcomed in August.

Boosted by the seasonal rush of travellers, particularly UAE residents returning for the start of the academic year, passenger traffic at DXB reached 8,233,311 in August compared to 7,727,105 recorded in the same month last year, an increase of 6.6 per cent. The year to date traffic totalled 59,353,368 passengers up 6.3 per cent compared to 55,851,148 recorded during the first eight months of 2016.

During August, South America was the fastest expanding market in terms of percentage growth (27.4) followed by Asia (21.9), and Eastern Europe (18.8).

In terms of passenger volumes, India remained the top destination country with 1,044,730 passengers in August, followed by the UK (611,254) and Saudi Arabia (610,434). London was the top destination city with 377,130 passengers followed closely by Kuwait (284,151) and Mumbai (211,564).

“We’re very pleased with the way things are shaping up this year,” said CEO of Dubai Airports Paul Griffiths.

“Not only in terms of growth, which has been robust with passenger numbers exceeding the eight-million mark three times, but also with our success

in significantly enhancing the airport experience, thanks to initiatives such as the launch of the world’s fastest free airport Wi-Fi, streaming entertainment service ICFlix, quicker passport control, and shorter wait times in queues thanks to cutting edge technology.”

DXB honoured at Aviation Awards Dubai Airports was honoured with two awards at the 11th Aviation Business Awards on Wednesday, as DXB won the Airport of the Year award while CEO Paul Griffiths was recognised as the Aviation Executive of the Year.

DXB won the Airport of the Year category based on the its success in significantly enhancing airport experience thanks to the latest in technology and innovative ideas, making passengers’ journeys more comfortable while managing the phenomenal growth in traffic.

Griffiths, who marks 10 years at the helm at Dubai Airports this year, has been instrumental in delivering the two key priorities – to never constrain growth and to ensure quality customer service through constant innovation. Arriving at Dubai Airports from Oman Dubai Airports welcomed the inaugural flight of Oman’s first budget carrier SalamAir at Dubai International’s Terminal 2 on October 8.

The new arrival was celebrated first with a traditional water salute for the flight, followed by a cake cutting ceremony at the terminal attended by representatives of the airline and the airport, as well as passengers.

Head there for the latest tech, dazzling displays, and a mission to Mars

W

hen the Wright brothers successfully landed their very first flight – in the Kitty Hawk on December 1903 – there was only a handful of people, including one child, there to greet them.

Mostly a curiosity, the idea of a contraption that could take to the skies was largely shrugged off at the time, with most rational people asking, “What problem does this machine actually solve?” While that was perhaps a valid point back then, it was also a shortsighted one.

One-hundred-and-thirteen years later – in 2016 – 3.8 billion travellers enjoyed air travel,

according to the International Air Transport Association, with that figure predicted to double to 7.2 billion by 2035.

Of course, in an innovative industry that adapts to keep up with – and often create – new technology and safety procedures, things are constantly changing. It’s events such as the Dubai Airshow – taking place between November 12 and 16 at Dubai World Central – that are leading the charge, on both the commercial and consumer sides of the aerospace market.

This year, the event’s Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Summit – a twoday conference focusing on the past,

present and future of flight – is set to be a very big deal. A buzzword across the UAE, and globally, right now, thanks in part to Dubai’s recent announcement that autonomous flying taxis will soon be taking to the emirate’s skies, UAS is predicted to more than double over the next decade, from its current US$5.2 billion to US$11.6 billion by 2023.

While Mohammed Ahli, Director General of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, will deliver the opening summit’s keynote presentation, ongoing discussions will also include in-depth perspectives on regulations, registration,

future development, innovation, commercial operation and new aircraft technology for airspace management, as well as optimising military technology.

Captain Samir Saget of the UN World Food Programme and Esther Nidichu, Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations at UPS, will also talk about ‘Drones for Good’, examining the role of UAS in the delivery and distribution of aid in poorer areas of the planet. On top of the conference, curious visitors can take a gander at some of the most exciting new UAS tech on offer inside a dedicated exhibition area.

Staying in the future for the moment, another one of the event’s new and impressive features is its Space Pavilion.

Designed in collaboration with the UAE Space Agency, this area will look at future space missions and projects within the country, while providing a global outlook into investment and innovation. The UAE government is actively investing in and researching space innovation, with the country revealing that it is building an enormous Mars Science City so that its people can better understand what it might be like to one day live on the Red Planet. Renowned architect Bjarke Ingels is in charge of designing and building the prototype US$140 million city in the desert, with the first CGI images being mind-blowingly impressive. But this is just the beginning. The prototype city is actually a lead-up to the real coup de grâce that comes in the form of the country’s even-farther-into-the-future plans to build the first mini city, Mars 2117, on the actual planet by, well, 2117.

All this talk of automated flying craft and space travel too much for you to handle? Come back down to earth and simply ogle at the Dubai Airshow’s very expensive aeroplanes – from fighter jets to passenger craft – with family and friends before enjoying some jaw-droppoinaerial acrobatics. Air displays are set to take place during the event’s opening ceremony, at 10am, on November 12, and then at 2pm on consecutive days.
