24 Hours IN DXB
You might be flying in on the red-eye but, as you’re about to discover, DXB is the airport that never sleeps. Here's how to enjoy it… 24/7 5pm I’ve only been at the airport for 10 minutes and I’m already overwhelmed at the sheer size of the place. Forget 24 hours, I could spend a week here. I’m especially keen for an extended stay as I’m offered a glass of red wine and a cheese plate upon arrival at Dubai International Hotel in Terminal 3. Spying the massage lounger in my room, I make a mental note for a new article idea: 24 hours in one room at the airport.
6pm I head for Seafood Restaurant in Concourse B. The menus come on an iPad and the catch
is so fresh that it’s described as ‘live on your plate’. The service is fantastic, and I don’t know if anywhere will ever be able to top the gloy of a tandoori oven-cooked salmon.
7pm After a big meal, some relaxation seems in order, and where better than at the Emirates Lounge? The stress of flying doesn’t really exist here, with travellers spending time at the Moët & Chandon bar, or grabbing something from the huge buffet offerings. I follow suit, fill a plate with medjool dates and Häagen-Dazs, and take it easy.
8pm A massage following a big meal is perhaps not advisable, but I came here to investigate and so dutifully plough on and book the Hanakasumi Body Treatment at Timeless Spa at the hotel. My therapist explains it’ll make me “smell like flowers, happiness and sunshine for days”. I’m sceptical, but after 60 minutes of pure relaxation I leave feeling refreshed and with an aroma of cherry blossom rice powder and shea butter. 6

9pm I wander the airport halls and do a spot of people watching. It’s actually pretty quiet, but staff are nonetheless forthcoming with their offers of a perfume sample to spritz up a grimy traveller before their next flight; it’s the time-poor traveller’s shower.
10pm I head back to my room for a snack – yes, I’m still hungry – and more importantly, to my industrial-sized bathtub for a long soak. It’s been a tough day of food and massages. I never actually want to return to real life.
2am After a quick nap, I’m wide awake. Noticing the bustling crowds in the halls below, I head down for a nosy. It seems the airport comes alive in the middle of the night – so I follow the masses (and my subconscious) to the nearest duty free. I exit with a bag of makeup I already have plenty of at home, and am sure it’s the best 2am purchase ever. I then lose all willpower and join the queue (?!) for a Be Relax manicure. No regrets.
8am I’m awake, alert and rested (not a single jet
DXB is the busiest international airport in the world, with 83.6 million people passing through in 2016
engine was heard) and am off to the hotel gym. After a blat on the treadmill, and a quick few laps of the pool, I realise that I’m wasting valuable time exercising; I have so much more food to eat.
9am Next, it’s off to Giraffe for breakfast, where I try and combat the previous day’s gluttony with a health nut bowl – packed with fruit and Greek yoghurt – and a fresh smoothie.
10am In theory, I’m now heading to Le Clos for a spot of pre-lunch wine tasting (it’s 5pm somewhere one of these planes is going, right?). I find a small Le Clos, and a slightly bigger one, but I’m searching for the flagship store with the comfy leather seats. Because I’m terrible with directions, I go down the same escalator three times and ask the same person for directions three times. Eventually, I’m sidetracked by perfumes at Dubai Duty Free.
11am I’m still lost. I have no one to blame here but my mother, for passing on her complete lack of direction.
11.15am Speaking of mum, I realise I haven’t spoken to my parents for weeks, so I plonk myself in the middle of the concourse and boot up DUBAI voyAger

Skype. The Wi-Fi here is far quicker than my Wi-Fi at home – meaning my father’s bald forehead is clearer than ever.
11.45am I leave Terminal 3 for the now and head for Terminal 1. Passing by a tempting display of liquor at Dubai Duty Free, I resist the pull to just pick up a bottle of wine for another whizz on the massage lounger in my room.
Noon I arrive at Terminal 1 without getting even a little lost, and high-five a stranger in triumph. I pass by many shops with clothes I can neither afford, nor need. The makeup counters beckon me too. I need chocolate.
12.30pm How convenient: Butlers Chocolate Café. Here I’m served a delicious shot of caffeine and a bowl overflowing with chocolatey 8

goodness. In the face of some amazing cakes, I stand strong and tell myself I need more exercise before I can have another treat. I’m lying to myself – I’ll definitely come back for them later, exercise or not.
1pm After all this eating and drinking, I feel like I deserve another spa treatment. I’m in luck, as Be Relax is just a few steps from Butlers and offers some great options. There’s a hairdressing station, massage chairs and professional waxes. My favourite is the Anti-Jet Lag facial – despite the fact that I’m not jet lagged because I’m not actually travelling. I come out of it glowing like a pregnant Beyoncé. And yes, that is a good thing.
2pm It’s lunchtime at The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck in Concourse D. And I’ve found my new favourite restaurant – I’ll take

4pm Through some crazy fluke of timing, family friends are heading through DXB and on to Oman. I surprise them at their gate with coffees and an incredible chunk of carrot and pineapple cake, and a fresh chocolate éclair from Le Pain Quotidien. Yes, I eat some of each. No, I am not embarrassed.
4.30pm Because I’m now exceptionally good at following directions – or perhaps because I stumbled upon it by chance – I finally discover the leather-chaired, whisky and wine haven that is Le Clos. They offer free tastings, and being a sucker for anything involving wine and freebies, I immediately agree. I’m even more enamoured with the place after being recommended Central Otago, a New Zealand wine by the sommelier who has, unbeknown to him, just offered me a tipple from my hometown.
5pm the drive to the airport any time just for another meal there. I devour a gloriously tender salmon fillet and a mountain of delicious vegetable and quinoa salad. But the true crowning glory is the chocolate layer cake that may or may not be the size of my head (and I have a big head). In full chocolate coma, with my waistline pushed to the limit and my jeans feeling far too snug, I roll out of the restaurant and look for somewhere to hibernate.
3pm Rejoice for the Snooze Cube! I get myself a quaint little room (Dhs75/Dhs100 per hour) with a comfy bed and lie down to deal with the sugar coma. The mural on the wall is of New Zealand’s Mount Maunganui, a place where I spent many a happy summer, and I’m hit with a pang of nostalgia. I cannot let the sweet treats put me from my quest. Channelling strength from my people, I set off for another date with T3.
I really can’t fit one more bite in, but I’m an absolute sucker for Pret a Manger; and this is the only one in Dubai, so it would be rude not to visit. I load up on flatbreads and cookies and head half-heartedly for the door. Insider gossip: Pret is currently scouting locations for it’s first Dubai city centre location. News to rejoice to if ever I heard it.
The Verdict 24 hours in DXB has taught me many things. Most importantly to me, it’s big, and there are many places to eat. But there’s so many other things going on here – 24 hours a day – that if you plan your trip well, then no layover will be a problem. In fact, it should be something you look forward to. This place is more like a destination in itself, than somewhere to simply pass through. So, DXB... I still really haven’t got any travel plans, but how about same plan, same time next week? The righT sT u f f To make the most of the airport that never sleeps, you’ll need to be in rude health. Here are the vitamins to take on the fly
For more energy… Vitamin B A long flight can leave the best of us feeling a little fragile, but a good dose of B Vitamins – B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 – should put the spring back in your step. They work together to help make energy and form healthy red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is particularly important, aiding the development and upkeep of DNA and maintaining a healthy nervous system. Get multivitamins and supplements at Boots in DXB, T3 B gates and T1 D gates.
For an immune system boost… Vitamin C You’ll normally get this from a healthy diet, but if you’re flying you’ll need a supplement. Vit C is essential in helping the body maintain strong bones and blood vessels, healthy skin and absorb iron. While it can’t actually prevent colds, it can lessen some of the symptoms, as well as protect you from heart disease.
For strong bones… Vitamin D Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium better in order to maintain healthy teeth and bones. The ‘sunshine vitamin’ is also important for supporting a healthy immune system, brain and nervous system, and has even been linked to fighting diabetes by regulating insulin levels.
Beat jet lag how to hit the ground running after a long haul flight
Flying can be something of an assault on the body. The humidity in an aircraft cabin is as low as 10-20 per cent – the equivalent the Sahara – while the pressure in there puts you under extra strain. That means that if you’re flying four hours or more, you’ll lose essential salts and minerals. That’s when the jet lag kicks in. The best way to combat this is to avoid hitting the drinks trolley too hard. The most realistic way is with a rehydration drink. Uppy contains electrolytes that help to restore the body’s fluid balance. Vitamins D and C as well as zinc and selenium maintain a normal functioning immune system, while vitamin B12 and magnesium helps reduce fatigue and exhaustion. Take one tablet every three or four hours and arrive at your destination in fine fettle. Uppy – The Genius Flyer, Dhs30-35, uppyflyer.com 16 DUBAI voyAger

Desert islands, active volcanoes, and a forgotten scientist: Dubai Voyager crosses the mysterious Wallace Line to find out why nothing compares to the Indonesian island of Lombok Words: Gary Evans

I
’m sitting outside a tent halfway up an active volcano. The sun goes down, and when it comes back up again, I’m standing on the summit, proud to be looking down on the clouds, freaked out by the cone in the crater that puffs white smoke. It’s late afternoon now. I’m clinging to the side of a small speedboat as it bounces over clear blue water. The sun sets again and I’m looking for a beachside treehouse – my bed for the night – but I’ve somehow managed to get lost on an island that’s barely a mile wide. I’m surrounded by jungle. I’m on a deserted dirt road. The power goes out. This two-day period doesn’t represent how I usually travel. I consider finding my hotel enough strenuous activity for most holidays. Lombok isn’t an island that encourages you to overexert yourself

either. Time moves slowly here. So why was I charging up and down volcanos and zipping about on speedboats and wandering around in the dark on desert islands? The blame lies with Bali. Now I’ve done what everyone does when they talk about Lombok: I’ve compared it to Bali. It’s neighbour, 20-odd miles west, casts a long shadow. Lombok is always hyped as ‘the new Bali,’ an ‘unspoiled Bali’. The comparisons started long before the tourism. These two Indonesian islands have a history of being joined by what separates them. Between Lombok and Bali, still waters run very deep. Alfred Russel Wallace called himself a ‘travelling naturalist of limited means.’ He had the long beard, the round glasses, but unlike many Victorian natural scientists, he had no family wealth to fall back on. He funded his trips by selling the plant
and animal specimens he collected along the way. In 1854, he began a decade-long expedition through Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. While there, in bed with a fever, Wallace came up with a revolutionary idea – two ideas in fact. He struggled out of bed and stayed clearheaded long enough to write them down. He titled one, On the Tendency Of Varieties To Depart Indefinitely From The Original Type. This first idea he sent off in essay form to the naturalist Charles Darwin. Wallace sailed from Bali to Lombok, crossing the Lombok Strait. I did the same. He enjoyed views of the volcanoes on each island, “magnificent objects at sunrise and sunset.” The trip took him two days. It took me two hours. The town most-changed since Wallace’s day is Senggigi Beach. It’s now the island’s
A p r i l 2 0 17
main resort town and Lombok built its first hotels here. Development picked up pace in the early ’90s, when the ‘new Bali’ hype first began. Senggigi certainly looked like parts of Bali, but my least favourite parts. I walked down the main strip of bars and restaurants – karaoke posters on the on walls, sports on the widescreen TVs, pie and chips on the
menu – and they all seemed to be owned by middle-aged expats. I travel from Senggigi to Sembalun and hire local guide, Harry, 19, who looks the part, has all the right gear, and says he’s climbed the mountain [Rinjani] more times that he can remember. He rustles up a couple of porters. They do not look the part. They’re either lighting a cigarette or putting one out. They do not have all the right gear. They wear shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops. We walk all day through grassy plains, a steady incline, nice and easy. Green hills roll off in all directions. Grey, long-tailed macaque monkeys scamper alongside, squabbling among themselves. It gets tougher, steeper, but the porters always walk ahead. Each balances a bamboo pole across their shoulders. On either end of the pole hangs a sack. These sacks hold all our food and water, our cooking and camping gear, and their cigarettes smoke and their flipflops flip-flop. We pitch tent at over 9,000ft and sleep in the clouds. At 3am, Harry and I set off again. The porters stay at camp, smoking, and are very smug about it. For three long

hours, in the dark, I drag my boots through the loose stones that cover the narrow ridge that leads to the summit. We make it to the top just as the sky begins to lighten. The sun rises, reds, oranges, and I see for the first time the full spectacle of 12,000-ft Mount Rinjani: the volcano’s huge crater, and inside the crater a lake, and in the middle of the lake a smaller volcanic cone, a cone that smokes more than my porters. Off in the distance, out at sea, the Gilis Trawangan, Meno and Air, an ellipsis of islands dotted off Lombok’s northwest coast. Trawangan is known as the party island, Meno as a desert island, and Air as being popular with families and couples, but there’s some overlap. People haven’t been coming here very long. The first settlers arrived about 60 years ago. They say that to claim a plot of land all you had to do was cordon it off with sticks and string. There are no cars or motorbikes or motorised transport of any kind. You can walk around each island in about an hour, and you’ll go whole stretches without seeing a local, never 28

mind a tourist. The permanent population on Meno is about 400. The Lombok government actively encourages tourism, but it appears determined to grow in a sustainable way. A couple of years ago, it called for 80 per cent of new tourism developments to feature some form of eco-tourism. I tried to find some of these developments.
After Rinjani, I travelled from Sembalun to Bangsal by car, and from Lombok to Gili Air by speedboat. The boat pulled up right on the beach. On foot, during a power cut, I found my way to Manusia Dunia Green Lodge, I stayed in a two-floor, treehousestyle bungalow. As treehouses go, it was luxury. But it was also built using natural timbers and local tradesman. It creaked,
A p r i l 2 0 17

swayed, looked a bit wonky. I liked it. It caught the sea air and echoed the sound of the waves. On Trawangan, I stayed at Pondok Santi, which offers a similar group of bungalows, all built on the site of a former coconut plantation. The coconut palms still outnumber bungalows by a hundred to one. Since space on the island is limited, development can only go so far. Delphine
Robbe runs the Gili Eco Trust, an environmental group that encourages everyone on the islands to think greener. Robbe came to Gili Trawangan a decade ago for a diving course, and never left. Indonesia is one of the best places in the world for diving But dynamite fishing destroyed as much as 80 per cent of Trawangan’s shallow reefs. The Frenchwoman found an ingenious way to regenerate lost coral. She and her team lower a metal structure into the seabed and pass a small electrical current through it, which encourages coral to grow up to six times fast than normal. The coral’s more resilient too. The method is known as biorock. Robbe helped set up 124 of these structures around Gili Trawangan and Lombok. Proximity aside, there seems to be no good reason to compare Lombok with Bali. Lombok, like most of Indonesia, is mainly Muslim. Bali is largely Hindu. The islands mostly speak different languages – not surprising in a country made up of 17,000 islands speaking 300 different languages. They have different histories, different cultures. Bali is Indonesia’s most-visited
island. Lombok doesn’t make the top 10. But it goes further than that. There’s an invisible line that separates one side of the world from the other. It cuts across Indonesia, between Borneo and Sulawesi, and through the Lombok Strait. It’s called The Wallace Line. Wallace wrote: ‘The islands of Bali and Lombok … belong to two quite distinct zoological provinces, of which they form extreme limits.’ The Lombok Strait is narrow, but deep. It’s depth, he said, acted as a barrier that separated two different groups of plants and animals, those originating from Asia and those originating from Australasia. When it came down to it, Darwin was well ahead of Wallace on his first theory – plus Darwin had more money to support his research – but Wallace was onto something with this second one: he proposed a boundary line that separated the two ecozones, with all the Asiatic plants and animals to the east, and all the Australian organisms to the west. Lombok sits on one side of The Wallace Line, and Bali on the other. The two islands, he concluded, were worlds apart. After the Gilis, I returned to Lombok, to Kuta, a village on the south coast. I booked into a US$10-a-night hotel ran by locals, hired a US$3-a-day moped (helmet included, but they didn’t have any left), and bought petrol by the side of the road, which the seller poured into the tank from a vodka bottle. Either side of Kuta sits a string of beaches – wild beaches compared to the Gilis, but beautiful too – and the best by far is Mawi. I ride along a road that follows the rising, falling coastline, the jungles, the mountains, through little villages and farmland, past terraces of brilliant green rice paddies. The road finally opens up onto the beach, enclosed on either side by high green headlands. The water is blue and green and crystal clear, giant waves crest, break and roll up onto a flawless white-sand beach, then slip away again. Here I found the Lombok I was looking for, a bit of paradise in the wild, a place with no comparison. Fly there Fly direct from DXB to Bali with Emirates. The inaugural DXBLaughs, launched by Done Events, will bring some of the world’s leading comedians to Dubai to perform at various venues across the year. Beginning with Izzard, more artists will be announced for further comedy shows slated to take place in October and December. Beginning in 2013, the English comedian’s Force Majeure tour has already visited 30 countries, including cities across the USA, Europe and Asia. Izzard regularly performs gigs at Madison Square Garden in New York, making him only the fourth comedian ever to play that venue. In 2011, he became the first ever stand up to perform at the legendary Hollywood bowl. He has also performed residencies globally including Paris, Germany and Spain where he performs his shows in French, German and Spanish. Outisde his life in the spotlight, he’s a political activist and philanthropist. Last year, he ran 27 marathons in 27 days in South Africa to honour the late president Nelson Mandela and raise money for children in poverty in Africa. ‘We are very excited to be able to bring such a leading comedian as Eddie to Dubai whilst launching our comedy platform, DXBLaughs. Providing a unique show for our UAE audience, we will all be in for a real treat come April 27’, said Girish Bhat, managing director at Done Events.

DXB wows passengers with the world’s fastest airport Wi-Fi DXB wows passengers with the world’s fastest airport Wi-Fi Dubai Airports has unleashed the world’s fastest free Wi-Fi connection at an airport to millions of passengers that travel through DXB each month. Aptly named WOW-Fi, the service provides Internet connection up to a staggering 100mbps, surpassing all other airports. This follows the launch of upgraded free unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi connection across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) in December last year. “As the biggest international airport in the world, we are at the heart of many journeys across the globe,” said Michael Ibbitson, executive vice president of technology and infrastructure at Dubai Airports. “To support these travellers, late last year we launched unlimited free high-speed Wi-Fi for our customers across our airports but our
goal was to offer something they have never experienced at an airport before. “During the two months since the soft launch of WOW-Fi, the service has been enjoyed by an average of over 100,000 unique users per day. We are certain the WOWFi experience will impress the 89 million passengers we expect to welcome at DXB in 2017” he added.
Thanks to a simplified landing page, the unlimited free Wi-Fi at DXB connects with just one click and offers speed that sets a new benchmark for airports globally. To ensure the speed and reliability, Dubai Airports is investing in more than 6,000 new Wi-Fi access points to upgrade the entire wireless network infrastructure across both airports.
St Patrick’s Day at DXB DXB got into the St Patrick’s Day spirit with lrish-themed entertainment and food to mark the occasion, celebrated by millions around the world on March 17. The main event was a live performance from Irish band Ruaile Buaile, whose energetic show for #musicDXB set a party atmosphere in Concourse B. The young quintet hails from Offaly, in the heart of Ireland, and is renown for their high energy, ground-thumping celtic pop-folktraditional music. The musicians were friends before forming the band, which has now performed in festivals across the world. The airport’s food outlets also relished the chance to get creative, with DXB’s Costa Coffee offering a colourful shamrock cupcake. Both Jack’s Bar & Grill and The Draft House offered a special St Patrick’s Day burger, with a green shamrock bun, grilled Riverland beef, mature Glenstal Irish cheddar, Ballymaloe relish, pulled short rib and golden onions. 36 DubAi VoyAger

Nick Kane Wins Mark Fahy Memorial Golf Tournament The rolling fairways of the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates played host to the Dubai Irish Golf Society (DIGS) for the annual Mark Fahy Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, on March 10. On what was a warm and, at times, blustery day, over 60 DIGS members turned out to support the event. The tournament is run in memory of Mark Fahy, a prominent figure within Dubai’s Irish community who died from cancer. With the strong field and challenging course conditions, the champion golfer on the day was Nick Kane, who scored a scintillating 43 stableford points. Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free, said: “This year marked the 13th year of the annual golf event which honours Mark 38

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships celebrates 25 years
Andy Murray (winner) and Fernando Verdasco (runner-up) of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships ATP week with Dubai Duty Free officials and dignitaries
One of the most eagerly anticipated events on the UAE sporting calendar, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships celebrated its 25th anniversary in fine style last month. It would have been hard to foresee that an idea hatched over a coffee in 1992 would have such a significant impact on the growth of Dubai and on the emirate’s international profile. Back in that first year the site of the tournament, like Dubai, looked very different. There was no grand stadium and no Irish Village – just a temporary stand erected in the grounds of the Aviation Club, which catered to 3,500 spectators. There have been many memorable moments since then, most notably the 40

new stadium, constructed in 1996 and inaugurated by the patron of the event, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the introduction of the WTA tournament in 2001, and the announcement in 2005 that the men and women would receive equal prize money. With that announcement, Dubai became only the third tournament in the world, after the Australian and US Opens, to offer equal prize money. This year, to commemorate the 25th anniversary, a full calendar of celebrations and ceremonies took place during the event to honour those who have been involved for many years, and to recognise the valuable contributions of the sponsors and the tennis committee.
Those honoured were presented with a commemorative box containing a film, book and coin produced to mark the occasion. The book, Game, Set and Dubai: A Quarter Century of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, was officially launched on March 3, during the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. Both the WTA and the ATP tournaments boasted world-class lineups in 2017. The WTA tournament, which this year had Premier 5 status and a 64 draw, featured six of the world’s top 10, including World No 2 Angelique Kerber, reigning French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, reigning WTA Finals champion Dominika Cibulkova, and former Dubai winners Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki.

Elina Svitolina at the ceremonial cake cutting after the WTA awarding with Dubai Duty Free officials
The ATP World Tour 500 event included World No 1, Wimbledon, Olympic and ATP World Tour Finals champion Andy Murray, Australian Open and seven-time Dubai champion Roger Federer, US Open winner and defending Dubai champion Stan Wawrinka, two-time finalist Tomas Berdych, and flamboyant Frenchman Gael Monfils. This year saw the crowning of two new champions, with Elina Svitolina and Andy Murray claiming their first Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships titles. Svitolina claimed the title with a hardfought 6-4 6-2 win over 2011 title holder Caroline Wozniacki. By reaching the final, Dubai Duty Free Ambassador and 2011 Dubai champion Wozniacki has now
won more matches in Dubai than any other player, with 22 wins, overtaking the record set by Jelena Jankovic. But this year, it was Svitolina’s turn to take the title, which elevated her into the top 10 for the first time. In ATP week, Andy Murray became the first British champion at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, as he defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-3 6-2. His win comes after he finished as runner-up to Roger Federer in Dubai in 2012. But it was two dramatic matches during the week that had the full house on the edge of their seats, as Federer was defeated by qualifier Evgeny Donskoy – only his third defeat by a qualifier in 10 years. Then, Andy Murray saved seven match points

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina claimed the women’s doubles title with a 6-2 4-6 10-7 victory over Andrea Hlavackova and Shuai Peng, while JeanJulien Rojer and Horia Tecau celebrated their 13 title together in the men’s doubles. The tournament offered something for everyone, from world-class action on court, to the excitement of the thousands of children who participated in the offcourt activities and the enjoyment of those soaking up the atmosphere and entertainment in Tennis Village. Despite some unseasonal weather, the event again attracted huge crowds, with over 100,000 spectators attending over the two weeks. DUBAI voyAger 41

For St GeorGe
How to celebrate the festival of the legendary dragon slayer on April 23, in England and beyond Words: Ashleigh Stewart
O
nce a year, on April 23, Saint George’s Cross is waved fervently across England, as the nation drinks, feasts and chants merrily to salute just what it means to be a proud citizen. A celebration of the country’s patron saint – and reputed dragon-slayer no less – swathes the country in red and white, and while it might often get overshadowed by the more wellknown and boisterous patron saint day of its Irish neighbour, there’s actually much more to St George than a (rather impressive nonetheless) myth. 42 DUBAI voyAger
Real-life George was born around 280AD and grew up to become an fearsome soldier of the Roman Empire. But when faced with expulsion from the army for his beliefs, he refused to comply – even after offers of land and riches. He eventually paid the ultimate price. Since then, myth and legend have taken over, the most well known being where he saves a beautiful woman from becoming dragon food. As the story goes, a village, terrorised by the ferocious beast, was offering up a princess as a human sacrifice, that is until George arrived in the nick of time. It’s this act of bravery that endeared him to the English – who have otherwise
little claim to a man who never actually set foot on their shores. Although the Roman soldier’s place of birth has long been up for debate, it’s widely believed that George was born into a Greek Christian noble family in Syria, or Turkey. But the English later decided he was the perfect representation of chivalry and bravery for their nation. He was made patron saint in 1350 when King Edward III formed the Order of the Garter in his name. Hundreds of years later, St George is celebrated across England – and much of the rest of the world – during a fantastic day of festivities.

FEAST OF ST GEORGE IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON Where better to celebrate the English patron saint than in Trafalgar Square? The landmark is bedecked in red and white and lined with food stalls. There’s also a host of games, music and live performances until late.
ST GEORGE’S DAY CHARITY FESTIVAL, LYTHAM The festival at this tiny village in north England runs over several days, and has parades, a golf tournament, lunches and an official raising of the flag on the big day itself. In 2016, it raised Dhs366,000 for charity.
ST GEORGE’S DAY AT GEORGE’S QUARTER, LIVERPOOL Expect games, fancy dress and medievalthemed activities for St George’s Day in Liverpool, a highlight of the day being a Punch and Judy show at St John’s Gardens – the place it was first performed 155 years ago.
St George’s Day around the world This isn’t just and English celebration. In Serbia, St George’s Day is called Durdevdan and is celebrated on May 6, in line with the Julian calendar. Its big ritual is the preparation and eating of a whole lamb – as St George is the patron saint of shepherds. In Russia, the day is celebrated on April 23, with another event on November 26 in celebration of when the Church of St George in Kiev was dedicated. There are also celebrations across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Georgia, and also throughout the Middle East.

MADE FROM
AFRICA Amarula Cream is made with the tangy, exotic and wild-har vested fruit of the Marula tree, that’s indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa. From Januar y to Februar y, the ripe Marulas are collected by rural women. The fruit is fermented into a Marula wine that is then double-distilled to make a Marula spirit and aged in French oak barrels for two years. Fresh dair y cream is added to create the deliciously velvety-smooth Amarula Cream. Enjoyed on its own, over ice or in a range of delectable cocktails and desserts.

Raiders of the lost arts S e e I n d i a n a J o n e s s e t to a l i ve s c o re at D u b a i O p e ra t h i s m o n t h Life changes you when you live in Dubai. The city has made superlatives its native tongue: the biggest, the best, the tallest, the most expensive. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great, but it occasionally means that your perspective gets all out of whack, blinded by the golden glare of it all. So, for anybody currently feeling a little dulled in the senses, three words for you: Indiana Jones Live. Let that sink in. I honestly can’t imagine three better ones; except, perhaps: You’ve Struck Oil. 66 DUBAI voyAger
If you’re flying into the city this month, a trip to Dubai Opera should be at the top of your to-do list regardless. But throw in a full Symphony orchestra simultaneously performing John Williams’ legendary score to a screening of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and you’ve got what will surely be the event of the month. Seriously, watch the trailer on the website (dubaiopera.com). I defy you not to be excited by it. Dubai Opera has had to work hard to earn, and maintain, its market share since opening last year. The packed houses and genuine excitement that greets every new show is testament to the talent and skill of Chief Executive Jasper Hope and his team. But while an opera house is a cultural marker for any modern city worth its salt, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was always
destined for long-term success. This isn’t Field Of Dreams and “Build it and they will come,” is a sure-fire way to go bankrupt (Kevin Costner’s set unrealistic life goals for all of us on that one). However, Dubai has perfectly demonstrated how to run a successful opera house in 2017. It’s not just opera, it’s contemporary singers such as James Morrison, it’s the biggest shows on Broadway such as Jersey Boys (here in October), it’s Jeff Goldblum being chased by a T-Rex – did we mention that they’re giving Jurassic Park the same treatment this month, too? The only problem is, your TV sound system will never sound the same again. Raiders Of The Lost Ark In Concert, April 19,21; Jurassic Park In Comcert, April 20-21 at Dubai Opera, tickets from Dhs150. dubaiopera.com
