n my book, everyone who is anyone watched the royal wedding in April; seldom has there been such an occasion that competes when it comes to sartorial scrutiny, and the guests prepared their Gaga-inspired millinery accordingly. Of course the bride, Kate Middleton, looked fairytale radiant. Her dress hit a fashion home run, accessorised to perfection with self-applied make-up and a beautiful head bridesmaid. However, there was one question troubling me; long after the oh-so-cute Aston Martin carriage whisked the sweethearts away. What, did Princess Beatrice have on her head? Commentators later compared the pink silk Philip Treacy creation to antlers, a toilet seat and, my favourite, a pretzel… the 22-yearold had made a fashion faux pas of monumental proportion and the furor that ensued was reminiscent, albeit royally, of Elizabeth Hurley wearing that slashed-to-the-waist, chili-hot red Versace (complete with leopard print knickers) to a ‘friend’s’ wedding in 1998. Conscious act or not, Princess Beatrice was branded a thunder stealer, finding herself in a situation that begs the question

of ‘how do I strike a balance between looking fashion-forward, without making people hate me?’ I found a similar sentiment echoed recently, when I stumbled across a genuinely funny fashion blog, www.manrepeller.com. Born from a conversation that went a little like this: Girl 1: “What are you wearing tonight?” Girl 2: “My sweet lime green dropcrotch utility pants.” Girl 1: “Oh, so we’re man repelling. Cool.” The site’s young New Yorker author, Leandra Medine, notices that when it comes to directional fashion, what women love, men generally hate. FYI, this season the wedge heel in all forms and Chanel’s sunshine yellow Mimosa polish should repel to a tee. Sunglasses and shoes are, of course, the key to complicating your outfit the simple way. Try Alexander Wang’s extreme

angular frames, Dhs1,100 at www. net-a-porter.com – utterly festival fabulous. I could go on for hours when it comes to shoes. I’m sold again on the second season of Iris van Herpen’s United Nude collaboration – www.unitednude. com – and on the high street, Julian Louie’s A/W11 drop at Aldo looks to be Balenciaga-inspired… dramatic, statement shoes at their finest, and total ‘man-repellers’. There are two things to remember here. First of all, know your audience – especially when it comes to royal weddings. Secondly, understand that sculpting genuine ‘look-at-me’ style takes time, and usually fame. The fabulousness of Daphne Guinness and eccentric genius of Lady Gaga are art forms to reconstruct with extreme care. By all means, take elements of McQueen’s groundbreaking

silhouettes or Thierry Mugler’s razor-sharp tailoring and work them into your own style… I’m just saying think before you take a dip into blue hair and stilt heels territory if we’re going to get all Fashion Police about it. The answer is easy, really – small doses, ladies. Yes, it’s important to include elements of your personality within your visual expression to the world – this is the fundamental reason why fashion exists. But do it with caution, as nobody loves a tryhard wacko. Exercise statement flair with an innovative ‘extra touch’, just not to Princess B’s pretzel proportions. ■

hey’re brothers and reigning kings of sculpting an aesthetic fit for the most discerning Nikki Beach party queen. But what you may not know is that Spanish design duo David and Custo Dalmau – aka Custo Barcelona – have been doing ‘disco couture’ since the 1980s, presenting their ‘fun layered on fun’ collections at New York Fashion Week for nearly 15 years. And this season, they’re bringing it to your beauty cabinet. The story began with the innovative prints and vivid colour surrounding 1970s California, a location that inspired the siblings to create their own fashion line following the pair’s great American adventure on a motorcycle. Capturing the essence of this lightheartedness is a design approach to which they have remained true, most notably with their latest venture into the world of fragrance with Pure Custo Woman. Elle Timms grabbed five minutes with Custo, the creative force and face of the label, to find out more‌ WHAT DOES S/S11 MEAN TO YOU?

Every season we try to start from scratch, trying to reinvent ourselves without losing our DNA. This collection was a very architectural one, inspired by the movement of the geometric pieces by the American sculptor, Calder. And, of course, this is the season we launched our fragrance‌ it celebrates and complements the line perfectly.

Design to mould

The chief designers at Pandora’s Copenhagen headquarters unveil two new collections a year. Once finalised, the design specs are sent to the factory in Thailand, which employs 3,600 local workers and jewellers. Moulds are carefully created for the new designs, which, when finished, will be filled with wax to make blueprints for the charms before they are cast in silver or gold.

he Pandora jewellery brand is on the march to become as famous as its Greek goddess namesake. The Danish charm bracelets, necklaces and rings are sold in more than 55 countries and have adorned the wrists of A-list stars from Goldie Hawn to Catherine Zeta-Jones. The beauty of the brand is that you can customise each piece to your taste, ensuring that each item is truly unique. This is especially true with Pandora’s charm bracelets, which have propelled an age-old concept into the 21st century with modern pieces created from Murano glass, gold, silver, diamonds and precious stones, with charms for births, anniversaries and almost every milestone in between. According to the factory’s managing director, Thomas Nyborg, the pieces have become talking points themselves for women in shopping queues, at work or in restaurants. With over 60 million units produced on a yearly basis at Pandora’s factory in Bangkok, Thailand, Emirates Woman was lucky enough to sneak a peek behind the scenes to see how the jewellery is handcrafted and assembled – and where Pandora’s story begins.

All of Pandora’s jewellers are trained for one month to perfect the art of making Murano glass beads. Thailand is famed for its expert jewellery heritage and talent pool, which is a major reason why Pandora founded its production facilities in the country in 1989.

Conscious act or not, Princess Beatrice was branded a thunder stealer, finding herself in a situation that begs the question

of ‘how do I strike a balance between looking fashion-forward, without making people hate me?’ I found a similar sentiment echoed recently, when I stumbled across a genuinely funny fashion blog, www.manrepeller.com. Born from a conversation that went a little like this: Girl 1: “What are you wearing tonight?” Girl 2: “My sweet lime green dropcrotch utility pants.” Girl 1: “Oh, so we’re man repelling. Cool.” The site’s young New Yorker author, Leandra Medine, notices that when it comes to directional fashion, what women love, men generally hate. FYI, this season the wedge heel in all forms and Chanel’s sunshine yellow Mimosa polish should repel to a tee. Sunglasses and shoes are, of course, the key to complicating your outfit the simple way. Try Alexander Wang’s extreme

angular frames, Dhs1,100 at www. net-a-porter.com – utterly festival fabulous. I could go on for hours when it comes to shoes. I’m sold again on the second season of Iris van Herpen’s United Nude collaboration – www.unitednude. com – and on the high street, Julian Louie’s A/W11 drop at Aldo looks to be Balenciaga-inspired… dramatic, statement shoes at their finest, and total ‘man-repellers’. There are two things to remember here. First of all, know your audience – especially when it comes to royal weddings. Secondly, understand that sculpting genuine ‘look-at-me’ style takes time, and usually fame. The fabulousness of Daphne Guinness and eccentric genius of Lady Gaga are art forms to reconstruct with extreme care. By all means, take elements of McQueen’s groundbreaking

silhouettes or Thierry Mugler’s razor-sharp tailoring and work them into your own style… I’m just saying think before you take a dip into blue hair and stilt heels territory if we’re going to get all Fashion Police about it. The answer is easy, really – small doses, ladies. Yes, it’s important to include elements of your personality within your visual expression to the world – this is the fundamental reason why fashion exists. But do it with caution, as nobody loves a tryhard wacko. Exercise statement flair with an innovative ‘extra touch’, just not to Princess B’s pretzel proportions. ■

hey’re brothers and reigning kings of sculpting an aesthetic fit for the most discerning Nikki Beach party queen. But what you may not know is that Spanish design duo David and Custo Dalmau – aka Custo Barcelona – have been doing ‘disco couture’ since the 1980s, presenting their ‘fun layered on fun’ collections at New York Fashion Week for nearly 15 years. And this season, they’re bringing it to your beauty cabinet. The story began with the innovative prints and vivid colour surrounding 1970s California, a location that inspired the siblings to create their own fashion line following the pair’s great American adventure on a motorcycle. Capturing the essence of this lightheartedness is a design approach to which they have remained true, most notably with their latest venture into the world of fragrance with Pure Custo Woman. Every season we try to start from scratch, trying to reinvent ourselves without losing our DNA. The chief designers at Pandora’s Copenhagen headquarters unveil two new collections a year. Once finalised, the design specs are sent to the factory in Thailand, which employs 3,600 local workers and jewellers. Moulds are carefully created for the new designs, which, when finished, will be filled with wax to make blueprints for the charms before they are cast in silver or gold.

he Pandora jewellery brand is on the march to become as famous as its Greek goddess namesake. The Danish charm bracelets, necklaces and rings are sold in more than 55 countries and have adorned the wrists of A-list stars from Goldie Hawn to Catherine Zeta-Jones. The beauty of the brand is that you can customise each piece to your taste, ensuring that each item is truly unique. This is especially true with Pandora’s charm bracelets, which have propelled an age-old concept into the 21st century with modern pieces created from Murano glass, gold, silver, diamonds and precious stones, with charms for births, anniversaries and almost every milestone in between. According to the factory’s managing director, Thomas Nyborg, the pieces have become talking points themselves for women in shopping queues, at work or in restaurants. With over 60 million units produced on a yearly basis at Pandora’s factory in Bangkok, Thailand, Emirates Woman was lucky enough to sneak a peek behind the scenes to see how the jewellery is handcrafted and assembled – and where Pandora’s story begins.

hen it comes to celebrity relationships, most are far more ‘showmance’ than romance, with the telltale signs of a calculated PR push rather than the genuine victims of Cupid’s well-aimed arrow. So, when a couple such as Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony step forward with, what appeared to be, the ‘real deal’, cynics are forced to make way for the closet romantics to have their turn in the spotlight. Demi and Ashton, SJP and Matthew Broderick, and Jennifer and Marc… Hollywood’s golden couples all going the distance. Or, so we thought. But then news hit the gossip sites mid-July that all was not well in JLo’s camp and, after seven years, her relationship with the Puerto Rican singer wasn’t just floundering, it was officially over. Reporters started their digging for dirt before the cynics even had time to say ‘I told you so,’ as they rooted around to sort the facts from the fabrications about the fated relationship. It goes without saying that the gossip columns and tabloids’ imaginations have since been running rampant, conjuring up all manner of flamboyant, and potentially wildly inaccurate, accounts of the failings behind the marriage (mostly based on speculation, we might add). We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters.” One point well raised, however, is the Oscar-worthy performance of both parties in the lead up to the split – quite some cover-up. One would assume, and hope, that the couple was already in discussions regarding their split prior to the shock announcement on People.com on Friday 15th July (just nine days before her 42nd birthday), however the preceding months indicated nothing other than a united front. They shared the stage (her dancing, him singing) at the American Idol finale on May 15th, and appeared very much ‘together’ at their last public appearance at the Boys And Girls Club event in New York on June 10th… quite an acting tour de force. However, perhaps the fact that she chose to take her mother to meet Prince William and Duchess Kate at the BAFTA Brits To Watch party on July 9th, and not her husband, was somewhat of a sign that all was not well. With one engagement (Jennifer and Ben Affleck) and three prior marriages between them (her two, him one) perhaps this relationship was always set to fail – despite the adage of ‘third time lucky’? But, as with any relationship where children are involved, the emphasis so far appears to be on making the break-up as peaceful a process as possible. It was Jennifer who made this stance most evident, stepping out in West Pennsylvania less than 10 days after the announcement wearing a tracksuit from Peace Love World, with the ‘peace’ sign emblazoned over the back of it. Message received, loud and clear.

But with children, the joint venture of their fashion line for Kohl still due to launch (albeit now separately), and their television show Q’Viva! And as the days post break-up continue to unfold, you can bet gossip columnists the world over will continue to bleed the rumour mills dry, desperate to be the ones who finally uncover the ‘truth’. In the meantime, however, the singer has other things to talk about – namely love, but only for the little people in her life…

(Laughs) I don’t know if that is going to end. Not for a few years, anyway. But they are amazing and they are so smart and sweet and loving, and I am just proud. ARE EITHER OF YOUR CHILDREN STARTING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? YOU RECENTLY RELEASED YOUR SEVENTH STUDIO ALBUM LOVE? – WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CALL IT THAT?

Well, love is a very complex topic for me and the more I learn about it the more I realise how much I don’t know. It is a journey, you know, and that is why I think it should have been spelt with a question mark. TELL US THE STORY BEHIND IT…

There are so many songs on the album that I am excited for people to hear for so many reasons. Some of them because they are just straight club bangers, some because of what they have to say and some because of how they make you groove. All my albums have always been a mix of different types of music. Like urban and dance, pop and a little bit of Latin. This one is no different. All for different reasons, but they are all very thematic in a sense that they are all about love. TALKING ABOUT LOVE, HOW ARE YOUR LITTLE ONES?

Max and Emme are beautiful. They just turned three and I can’t believe it. It is something new every day.

My babies? Emme sings and it is just so funny when you listen to her because she sings out of pure joy and pleasure, but the minute she thinks you are watching her she stops. But she has a beautiful little voice, like a little Shirley Temple vibrato thing. Max is just kinda loud, with a very loud voice. He is a real boy! Marc used to say he will be her manager! He is super smart and amazing and a real boy. He is just into everything and just wants to throw and break everything in the world. WHAT IS DAY-TO-DAY HOME LIFE LIKE FOR YOU WITH TWO CHILDREN?

Well, the minute we get anywhere, because we travel a lot, we have to move everything up. No flowers on the coffee table, no cups, no knives, no forks, no food. Max likes to throw fruit. We have to put everything away. Anything he finds he just throws over his shoulder. Why? He just doesn’t want it there (laughs). ARE THEY AS OBSESSED WITH MUSIC YET AS YOU?!

Well, they are obsessed with the movie Beauty and the Beast right now and The Chipmunks.

“In a sense, ALL MY ALBUMS are about LOVE” I think I have seen The Chipmunk movie about 700 times – I could actually recite it to you, it is crazy. WHAT’S IT LIKE GOING OUT IN PUBLIC – DO YOU HAVE TO GO INCOGNITO?

I tell you, that’s why I love Hallowe’en, because we get to put on masks all night. My coconuts, that’s what I call my babies, were going insane because they couldn’t believe people were giving out free candy everywhere. But what was great is that Marc and I were wearing masks and we got to walk through the whole neighbourhood and no one knew it was us and we were like, ‘This is kinda fun’. But no, it is not something I would do all the time. 62

(Laughs) Well, for example, I went out last New Year’s Eve and I got up on the couch and danced all night. Sure, I was trapped in the VIP area, but I still got to dance! THE VIDEO WAS A J LO PRODUCTION AT ITS BEST…

Oh my gosh, so much! It just changes you so completely from the inside out and it is just the most profound thing that can happen to you as a woman. You have a child and they just completely change your perspective on the world and on yourself and on your life and what you have been doing and the way you see things. It is just a totally different thing. YOU ARE A MUMMY FIRST AND FOREMOST BUT YOUR NEW RECORD SHOWS THAT THERE IS STILL THAT PARTY GIRL IN THERE!

(Laughs) Too right! Babies have gotta sleep some time and grandma comes over and mummy can go out and cut loose for a while! Mummy can go out and have a little bit of fun. For sure (laughs). There is nothing wrong with that. It can’t be all the time, but I definitely stay connected to that girl that used to just love to dance. That is what I really loved about my recent track On The Floor, is that it really expressed that feeling. I love music that expresses and captures a feeling that I identify with the minute I hear it. If I can’t get it myself then we write them.

WHY DID YOU PICK PITBULL TO CONTRIBUTE TO TO THE THE SONG? SONG? CONTRIBUTE

I picked Pit because for me, right now, there is nobody who gets on a track and just elevates it the way he does. Everything I hear him on is just amazing – he just makes it more party, more everything. SO TO AMERICAN IDOL – YOU PROVED A HUGE SUCCESS!

I am so happy that everyone loved the show. I am very grateful about that. I really just wanted to be myself and I think Steven [Tyler] felt the same thing. I think that’s why we were chosen – they knew that we were good, and hopefully interesting, people. It was just a very natural, fun experience for me and I think that is what came across. We were also very serious about what we are doing. We actually cared about it and about the process – about music and the artists, and you got that from us every week. I truly had a great time. AND YOU GOT TO WORK WITH THE GREAT STEVEN TYLER FROM AEROSMITH…

I know! He’s a very spontaneous person – you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth. Probably half the series was me looking at him in surprise, thinking, ‘Did he just say what I think he just said?’ (laughs). He is just so funny and I enjoyed every second of it – all the zaniness and craziness. WERE YOU ALREADY A BIG FAN OF THE SHOW?

Oh yeah, I was, and still am, a huge fan. I have always loved the judging and doing it from my couch at home. I always thought, ‘I could do that’ and then I did.

It is funny, I didn’t think of that in the beginning and this was the first time I had ever been on TV before without a script. I mean I have done interviews and stuff before and minutes here and there but not where people really get to see me like that, where I am really me and I was quite terrified the night of the premiere. I was like ‘Oh my goodness, this is so overwhelming.’ I remember waking up white as a ghost and Marc saying I looked crazy! It is funny, even though I have been out there for so many years it is a totally different thing. It wasn’t like I was afraid for people to get to know me – I’m actually happy for them to because I feel so much has been written about me over the years and people only know me through the interviews – but this is actually a nice thing and I cannot tell you how very appreciative I am of being able to show who I really am.

ETHIOPIA’S FEMALE LABOURERS HAVE FOUND SALVATION IN BRICKS AND MORTAR

L

ife for women in rural Ethiopia is defined by hardship and abuse. Disadvantaged and vulnerable, they are forced to marry at an extremely young age. Cultural and social traditions dictate their role is to produce and educate children, as well as toiling in the fields as and taking care of the home. For these women, life is tough; a daily struggle to make ends meet and stay alive. But in this desperately poor country, female manual labour is not only confined to villages deep in the countryside. In the cities too, women are increasingly found working on building sites. These labourers are often unmarried, divorced or separated. As single mothers they are seen as outcasts by society and their families, making it virtually impossible to find work. But far from being a burden on their already difficult lives, they see the building site as their salvation. “I’m one of the fortunate ones,” says Ayehu with a shy smile. “I have a job. 66

In my country it is difficult for everyone. But especially for women like me.” Ethiopia was ranked 157th of 169 countries listed on the United Nations’ 2010 Human Development Index. This index measures life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare and is used to distinguish whether a country is a developed, developing or an under-developed country, and quality of life. Despite an apparently booming economy that has grown at a rate of around 10 per cent every year since 2005, 68

most Ethiopians live below the poverty line, with many earning less than $2 per day. More than 80 per cent of Ethiopia’s 85 million citizens live in rural areas; half are under the age of 15. Due to regular famines and food shortages, and the growing scourge of HIV/ AIDS, life expectancy has fallen to barely more than 40 years. And the plight of the nation’s womenfolk is most acute of all. Throughout the world,

the on going issue of children forced into arranged marriages is rightly considered a violation of basic human rights, but in Ethiopia the situation is particularly grave. Pressures imposed on young girls by various cultural and religious aspects of their community mean it is virtually impossible for them to break free from this tradition of marriage and family life, which they start at a far younger age than is considered morally responsible, or acceptable, in the West. If they try to resist a union, the girls risk being ostracised by

their families and society – they are more likely to be offered a beating than emotional, or financial, support. In such cases, girls – usually uneducated – find themselves married off by the age of 10, and in some cases even younger. Despite the fact the legal minimum age for marriage is 18, the law is regularly ignored and it is rare to find an unwed girl over the age of 16. Many of these girls fall pregnant before their bodies are properly matured and are injured in childbirth – once again leaving their future bleak and susceptible to further recriminations. As for the men, those with deep-rooted attitudes or beliefs often have little respect for women. It is not unusual for

one man to be in a relationship with several women at one time, while others mistreat their wives, abusing them physically and sexually while under the influence of dagga (drugs). If a girl is disfigured or injured during childbirth, as happens frequently due to a lack of medical care, she is simply cast aside and abandoned by her husband. And, in a society where single women are treated with little respect, this only heaps more misery on them. They struggle to find work and

eke out a living, barely able to earn enough to feed their children. Meseret’s story is typical. She was just 13 when she married a boy she had never met before the day of her wedding. Her new partner was barely older than she was, but the cruelty and violence he inflicted on her was like that of a grown

man. However, 10 years on her life took a turn of the worse – if imaginable. Her husband abandoned her and she was left to raise five young children alone. Ayehu, now 28, was 15 when she fell pregnant. Being so young, her first child was stillborn – a common occurrence in a country that lacks appropriate pre-natal care. But, as if the loss of a child wasn’t a brutal enough blow, it was the ‘shame’ this tragedy

brought on her family that led to them not to close ranks around her to provide support, but to completely ostracise her. Her husband deserted her and she was left to fend for herself. Through no fault of their own, both Meseret and Ayehu – like thousands of other young women – became social outcasts. They also faced an added challenge. Like most of their contemporaries, they received no schooling once they AUGUST 2011

were married. They are among the 80 per cent of Ethiopians who cannot read. Discarded by their relatives, many women turn to begging with their children to survive, or risk verbal, physical and sexual abuse working as ‘house servants’. Others resort to prostitution, which in turn has led to an increase in the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. But Meseret and Ayehu are two of the lucky ones. They’ve been given work on a project set up by GTZ, an aid agency sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GTZ, and other foreign organisations, are working in Ethiopia on programmes teaching women new skills, whilst also helping to build the country’s industry and infrastructure by finding them work on construction sites and road-building schemes. Across the capital, Addis Ababa, 70

“WE WORK VERY HARD. On average we are on site for 10 to 12 hours every day. That makes it almost IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO LOOK AFTER our children” the sight of women working in construction has become commonplace. Some women are employed as day labourers, mixing sand and gravel and carrying heavy bags of cement and rocks. In Meseret and Ayehu’s case, GTZ has taught them how to work with cobblestones, breaking them up in milling machines to make gravel, a far more sustainable material for building roads in rural areas than using expensive tarmac or concrete. The techniques and skills they have acquired can easily be replicated in the impoverished regions they come from. Nevertheless, the work is intense, the hours long and the

conditions harsh. Even though the high altitude across much of Ethiopia means the daytime temperatures are lower than in the city, the dust, sandstorms and heavy manual labour the women endure makes life hard. And for all their efforts, these women earn the equivalent of just Dhs310 a month, slightly less than the average of around Dhs415. “We work very hard. On average we are on site for 10 to 12 hours every day. That makes it almost impossible for us to look after our children,” says Meseret. Like Meseret, most of the other women are divorced or separated, forced to bring up families alone. Some have five or more children. Disowned by relatives, they lack the usual support network available in developing countries, spending much of their meagre wages on rudimentary childcare, paying

neighbours to look after their children whilst they work. Those with young babies usually bring them to the site, breastfeeding them when they can. The work may be backbreaking, but the alternatives, in a land ravaged by high unemployment, are potentially far worse. These women are under no illusions and, grateful for the employment opportunity afforded them, work diligently and seldom complain about anything. “We are just happy to have work,” says Ayehu. “It is very, very difficult for a woman in Ethiopia to find a job. Especially single women like us, says Ayehu. “We are the lucky ones.” They know full well that no matter how tough the work gets, they are better off on the building site than on the street or at home, trapped in a violent marriage. “We were beaten and abused by our husbands,” Ayehu continues. “Why would we want it in our jobs as well?” ■

VALENTINO: OUT WITH THE OLD

ARMANI PRIVÉ: OPULENT ORIGAMI Giorgio Armani’s stunningly sombre couture zoned in on, and paid homage to, Japan. The designer has been quietly contributing to a scholarship programme that helps child victims of the natural disasters earlier this year, and appropriately wove blossom-printed silks, obi-esque belts, paper-like parasol silhouettes and strategically folded hats (courtesy of Philip Treacy) into this moving, elegant show.

ALAĂ?A: BACK IN BUSINESS Tunisian-born Azzedine AlaĂŻa is famously very shy. So shy in fact, that this is his first couture collection in eight years – and it was definitely worth the wait. The designer had to be coaxed from backstage to take his bow in front of an audience that included Kanye West and Sofia Coppola. The show saw the ‘King of Cling’ give his dedicated followers exactly what they wanted: sculpture, laser-cut precision and a perhaps surprising hint of green. The colour of next season, it would seem. ALAĂ?A

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli looked to the decadence of the last Tsar of Russia’s family before adding their signature red splash and contemporary flourish. The Valentino client requires her couture to have a fresh attitude – and doesn’t this design duo know it. Ultra-glamorous pleated tulles, modern gothica nods and the injection of eau de nil, a delicious soft green tinge (trust us, it’s going to be big), saw to that.

With an ice-like smattering of sequins, beads and glass embellishment, Elie Saab’s couture show screamed ‘expensive’ – and rightly so. Taking a somewhat refreshing, and more youthful angle than we’re used to seeing from the Lebanese couturier, the translucent start steadily built into a midnight blue clad Anja Rubik finish (prior to the obligatory bride) – every look sparkling as redcarpet ready as they come.

STÉPHANE ROLLAND: FURTHER EAST Stéphane Rolland took inspiration from Caoshu for his couture collection this season, and studied the style of Chinese ancestral calligraphy, referred to as ‘en herbes’, or ‘wild grass’. Reference was also made to British illustrator David Downton’s striking portraits via a continuous ink line dripping along the backs of garments... the sheer elegance of the show could be surmised by looking to the French designer’s muse; the world’s oldest working model, the utterly charming Carmen Dell’Orefice, who watched on proudly from the front row next to Olivia Palmero.

Riccardo Tisci’s ‘just off porcelain white’, highly technical, 10-look collection was centred by the idea of “purity, lightness and fragility”. On closer inspection, the garments were intrinsically decorated with staggeringly delicate embellishment. Pearls inserted with crystals, caviar beads, hundreds of symmetrical silk tulle snippets, hand-curled feather plumes and stones that changed texture from matte to sheen under varying light offering just a glimpse into the thought behind this exquisite white out.

DIOR: ALL CHANGE In the wake of John Galliano’s controversial departure, designer Bill Gaytten is currently at the historical fashion house’s helm, albeit temporarily. His first collection presented an eclectic mix of inspirational references, from clowns to 80’s architecture, bringing about a newage disco doll vibe and a decidedly different way of doing things at Dior… DIOR

Make-up up for Mr Armani could have gone a little too pantomime dame, Memoirs of a Geisha or angry Kabuki doll as he looked East for inspiration. However, the magic touch of make-up artist Linda Cantello meant the girls looked fresh, modern and beautiful. There were no clichÊs, like hard reds or brilliant fuchsias, as you’d expect – instead there was a beautiful tangerine eye mixed with graphic liner and a fresh, clean face, while lips were just a darker version of the girls’ own lip colour.

Her latest collaboration with Lancel sees her in a new role as a bag designer alongside the creative brains of Leonello Borghi.

WORKING WITH BRIGITTE BARDOT IS QUITE THE COLLABORATIVE COUP – HOW DID IT COME ABOUT? Two years

ago there was an exhibition in Paris celebrating her style. I have always thought she had such an infectious quality and was a huge symbol of femininity – a perfect fit for the brand. It was there that I met a journalist who knew Brigitte and he suggested we write her a letter to propose a project to create the BB bag. Two weeks later she replied saying she would love to be involved. WHAT WAS IT LIKE COLLABORATING WITH SUCH AN ICON? I made several trips to her

villa La Madrague in St Tropez as she does not travel much or use email. She has the strongest personality and loved the fact that Lancel is a French company that has existed since 1876 and was started by a woman, Madame Angèle Lancel. Brigitte wanted to be involved in the entire design process and, of course, the making of the BB bag had to be totally environmentally friendly. TALKING BIGGEST-SELLERS, WHICH BB BAG HAS PROVEN MOST POPULAR?

The pink has sold extremely well and there is a waiting list for it in Europe. The more vibrant colours are selling particularly well here in Dubai. 86

She was 17 and staying in St Tropez at Hotel Yaca with her parents and noticed that everywhere she went people wore white. Just to be different, she took down the pink and white checked curtains from her hotel room and wrapped them over the top of her skirt, creating her gingham look. don’t really have a good head for heights!� says Peter Copping, as he towers over his French entourage at the macaroon-cushioned Nina Ricci boutique in The Dubai Mall. He is quick to rebuff the idea of a trip to the top of Burj Khalifa, insisting that, despite his own impressive stature, the mere suggestion turns his legs to jelly. Copping, as I soon discover, is a gentle giant and the antithesis of Oliver Theyskens – the long-haired, whippet of a man he replaced as Nina Ricci’s Creative Director. But while their looks certainly differ, both designers share a common passion and interest in the tailoring traditions of the past and the romance associated with old-school haute couture. The result is breathtakingly beautiful collections for the Nina Ricci brand; ethereal clothing that evokes fairytale princesses in floating chiffon ball gowns – the kind only a true romantic could create.

YOU ONCE SAID THAT YOUR HEART IS WITH FRENCH DESIGN – WHY IS THAT?

Even when I was studying at college in London, I always knew that I wanted to go to work in Paris. That sense of luxury and femininity in the way French women dress appeals to me – they can be very chic, but there is always a little touch of humour. EXPLAIN YOUR NOTION OF ROMANCE‌

Romance, in terms of clothes, can be reflected in certain materials and fabrics – lace, chiffon and all those very seductive, feminine things. I think romance is also linked to a general spirit and happiness. YOU LOOKED TO ARTISTS FOR YOUR S/S11 INSPIRATION. IS ART IMPORTANT TO YOU?

The reason I looked to art for S/S11 is that I wanted to reference the archive of the house but not necessarily the clothes; the brand has always been linked with artists. We looked at Lalique’s work (onetime designer of Nina Ricci perfume bottles) for some of the prints and to the


colour and joie de vivre of Christian Bauer, an illustrator who designed some of the perfume packaging back in the 40s and 50s. There really was a cross-section of artists I was able to draw on. TALKING COLLABORATIONS, WHICH HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST?

It’s difficult to say because I think I’ve learnt something from everyone. When I was at the Royal College of Art, I interned with Christian Lacroix. Working in the haute

couture salon was one of the most defining moments of my career. I obviously worked with Marc Jacobs for the longest period [12 years at Louis Vuitton] and he is incredibly precise – he will deliberate over a hemline for days! I probably learnt the most there. While Marc had a very American perspective, mine was more European so we complemented each other.

OUTSIDE OF FASHION, WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

FASHION IS CREATED, PRESENTED AND CRITIQUED SO FAST THESE DAYS – IS THAT A GOOD THING?

I’m not phobic of new technology, but equally I’m not personally into it. I don’t have a Facebook or Twitter account and emails are pretty much where it stops with me! I think things like live streaming of shows can work for other brands, but I like to keep a bit of intimacy in the Nina Ricci world.

I like interiors – buying things for the house and going to flea markets. ANY HOLIDAY HOT-SPOTS?

For the quiet side of life I like Ibiza, as a lot of the island is very rural and attractive and I like quiet holidays. I feel like it’s just the beginning, so I want to carry on making good collections. I’d like to do a collection at some point that is very high-level and couture-like. I do think their opinions are valid. Journalists like Suzy Menkes and Hilary Alexander have been critiquing fashion for such a long time that they see collections in a broader picture and can reference something to the past. A blogger is much more immediate and, perhaps, more personal – they either love it or hate it. So whether or not they’ve earned their place on the front row‌ I’m not completely sure yet.

ur senses fought hard not to let out a collective sigh of relief as we stepped from the hectic office at EW towers into the serenity of Park Hyatt Dubai. From the rolling green lawns to the statuesque palm trees that flanked us on arrival along the winding driveway, it was difficult to feel anything other than tranquil as we left the frenetic city behind. The silent calm of Amara, the hotel’s signature day spa, is truly far from the madding crowd. Magnificently designed in the style of an ancient Moorish palace, with its whitewashed exterior, regal blue domes and the sweet smell of flowers around the peaceful courtyard fountain, Amara serves up a true ‘Arabian nights’ experience. No cranes in sight, only the creek and the sprawling banks of Dubai Creek Golf course, the ritual of relaxation is taken seriously here.
