LETTER anuary is the month to make changes for the year ahead – to finally use that gym membership; to use fake tan instead of frying our skin in the sun; to take those vitamins that are still sitting in the bottle; to finally change that hairstyle we’ve had since our teens. It’s also a time to reflect on the past 12 months and to get excited about what the future holds. Who will dethrone Pippa Middleton as the next surprise fashion icon? Who will make headlines for all the wrong reasons (a la John Galliano) and, closer to home, what will be UAE’s new dining, dancing and

It was brilliant to read your piece on Isabel Marant. She really is a true genius whose clothes epitomise Parisian glamour. When the designer spoke about the importance of women feeling ‘themselves’ in her clothes I felt like yelling: “Finally!” It’s about time women are given the freedom to express themselves in fashion. Thanks EW for giving her the credit she so deserves. Kaylee W, Abu Dhabi
Happy Birthday I was pleased and proud to read your Happy National Day article. It was inspiring to look back at the enormous growth and triumphs of the UAE over the past 40 years. Much like the UAE, Emirates Woman has come on leaps and bounds. I’ve been a reader for 14 years L DAY N AT IO N A and, I have to say, it has gone from strength to strength. ALEXA MANIA I’m a huge fan of style princess Alexa Chung, so I was absolutely delighted with her beautiful shoot in your December issue. I think she represents what modern style is all about – comfortable and wearable chic. Back at home in the UK, the British fashion press are obsessed with her and I’m glad to see Dubai is catching on. She made the classic Chopard jewellery line look hip and edgy. Great choice, EW. I
’ve never been particularly au fait with haggling. The bartering, or rather ‘verbal battering’, skills some people possess in this region is something to behold – I’ve honestly seen demands for a ‘best price’ in H&M during a 50 per cent sale – and, frankly, the thought of becoming like that frightens me. However, people’s love of a bargain wasn’t really taken into consideration when I decided to take part in the Dubai Flea Market. I assumed I’d be able to simply, and calmly, sell off my no longer used bits ‘n’ bobs – last season’s clothes and handbags – in a relaxed Safa Park on a fresh Saturday morning, while sipping on an iced caramel frappuccino and making some friends from the vintage world. After collecting an unprecedented amount of ‘quality second-hand merchandise’ with my flea market friend, Amanda (a partner is imperative to the mission), we jam-packed a 4x4 and set off. We were as excited Only Fools & Horses’ Del Boy and Rodney. And just like these 40

IN FOR A PENNY CONSIDERING A SECOND-HAND SALE FOLLOWING YOUR NEW YEAR WARDROBE DETOX? THINK AGAIN, ADVISES ELLE TIMMS wheeler dealers we were hoping to ‘make a fair few bob’. Unfortunately, however, my dreams of a Portobello Market vibe were soon dashed when we arrived late and missed out on the last display table. Refusing to give up we continued to unpack our products but before we could finish a swarm of eager customers descended upon us. Ruthless and hungry to haggle, they shouted: “How much?” Goods were picked up, dropped and trampled on just as fast, and the ‘experts’ started pleading: “Please make it less.” As novices, we were like lambs to the slaughter. When fellow traders warned us to watch our phones – there was definitely a sense of a potential theft – we cracked. “Everything Dhs5 today, Dhs5 a piece!” we screamed, instantly destroying our pact
to make a profit – At this point we were practically giving our stuff away. However, while our experience may not have been fruitful, on reflection I’ve worked out the basic survival tricks that will ensure a successful attempt. Trick one: take a float, and make sure it’s full of Dhs10 and Dhs5 notes; honestly, you won’t need larger. Trick two: when it comes to price points, be prepared to sell shoes, regardless of label, for the price of that frappuccino you picked up en route to your stall. Trick three: don’t bother with the frappuccino, you’ll only drop it all over yourself in the stampede. Trick four: drink lots of water. We didn’t, and it wasn’t pretty. The main thing to remember is that people who visit the flea market will very rarely spend more than Dhs50 on any single
item. That said, if you have lots to sell, a small fortune can be acquired with just a few hours of hard work. In hindsight, I can only imagine it’s an experience like childbirth; you forget how bad it was at the time because the reward is so great and before you know it, you’ve got another one organised and on the way. Failing that, there’s always eBay… For more information on Dubai's Flea Market, visit www. dubai-fleamarket.com. JANUARY 2012
L
ast year, an eccentric young woman from Manhattan became the world’s biggest pop phenomenon. Dominating the music industry, 25-yearold Stefani Germanotta also became the youngest woman to feature on Forbe’s Most Powerful Women list (she came in 11th place), she was voted MTV’s Woman of the Year and was the first person to reach one million followers on Twitter (she now has over 16 million), and after sweeping up three awards at the 2011 Grammys (taking her total number of awards won to 137 in just three years) it’s clear everyone has gone goo-goo over Lady Gaga. With the world firmly in the palm of her hands, it’s hard to believe that only five years ago the over-styled, self-proclaimed “workaholic” saw her hopes for stardom almost dashed when she was dropped by her record label, DefJam, and fell prey to addictions. “I had a tremendous problem,” explains Gaga who, although regretful of her dark past, refuses to allow it to haunt her. Instead the singer draws on it for inspiration, particularly on her current chart-topping album, Born This Way. “It’s so much more personal than my previous work,” she says. “My first album, Fame [2008], was made before I had fans. But now I do so I have to answer all their questions.” By “re-opening wounds,” the lady behind the extravagant, often grotesque, but always weird, costumes finally offers a glimpse of the real her. And by momentarily ditching the horns, prosthetics and dinosaur eggs, Gaga is making her most controversial move to date – acting almost normal. She exclusively reveals her worst fears, her dreams for love and how her devoted fans are “the sunshine in my darkness”. While she may be at the top of her career – allowing her to adopt the megastar persona – when we get down to her roots, Gaga shows she hasn’t given up on Stefani. It’s those roots that come to the fore in her music, none more so than in her latest single, Marry the Night, she says: “It’s very autobiographical. It's me. It's my worst fears, it's about the chaos in my life. I think we all look back on our memories
and fill in the black holes, the moments we don't want to remember. It's just human nature. I wanted to show that.” Discussing her failed dreams, she adds: “I always wanted to be a ballerina, and knew I couldn't. When you are young, you have this idea of who you could become. And when you get older you realise that some dreams just won't be fulfilled.” Admitting she is grateful for her achievements, which have seen her become one of the world’s most recognised celebrities, she says: “A lot of my dreams did come true. And I do believe that you should never give up on your dreams or your ambitions. But when
“I’m
interested in
eaving a mark and a l
legacy
on the earth”
you are young, naivety works in your favour. I feel so incredibly grateful for what I have accomplished so far.” Listening to the singer, it’s obvious her self-depreciating attitude is what has helped her reach the top – she’s not arrogant, she doesn’t think she’s the best and she always wants to learn more. She admits: “Up to this day, I still blame myself when something falls apart.” Her family is always close by, offering support. “My dad always says how proud he is of me,” says the self-confessed daddy’s girl, before revealing how her close-knit family – Gaga is also best pals
with her sister, fashion designer Natali – ensures her fantasy world doesn’t become a reality. It’s thanks to her parents’ relationship that we see glimpses of a ‘normal’ Gaga. “My parents have been married for over 30 years now. It's just wonderful. I want that some day. I want to have a husband and grow old with him. I’m Italian, I want the ring, the church with flowers and bridesmaids – I’m traditional!” Though she insists she doesn’t have a husband in mind – despite rumours she is dating 30-year-old actor Taylor Kinney after meeting on set of her video, You & I – she reveals that behind closed doors, like most women she spends her free time “inviting a couple girlfriends over to my house, and we have somebody do our nails or get a massage. It's awesome. I love spending quality time with my girlfriends.” However, while she might be exposing a softer side, she maintains she’s never letting go of her ‘crazy’ – “I think delusion is the greatest gift for an artist.” And Gaga wants nothing more than to share that gift with her “little monsters” (her fans). Not only do they worship her, but she dotes on them too, revealing: “You learn a lot about yourself through the people that are attracted to your music. I see myself in them. It’s become my life’s work now and my inspiration to serve and return.” And it’s her commitment to inspire her fans and make them “feel free” that means she’ll never give up. Insisting that 2011 was only the start of what’s to come, she teases: “Quite honestly, you haven’t seen nothing yet. I haven’t even begun to show you creatively, or musically, what I am capable of.” Gaga’s rare moment of normality shouldn’t fool us, she isn’t becoming complacent. For the woman with many guises, what we’ve seen so far is clearly just a passing phase, after all she is a protégé and the queen of her own little world. Not even Gaga knows what’s she’s doing next, and that’s what makes her so captivating – this brief flirtation with normality is abnormal. “I am not interested in being a trend that you remember,” she says, almost cheekily reminding us that this chapter won’t last for long as she’s always evolving. “I’m interested in leaving a mark and a legacy on the earth.” JANUARY 2012

AND THE WINNER IS… WE INTRODUCE THE FIVE FANTASTIC WINNERS OF THE EMIRATES WOMAN, WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2011, IN ASSOCIATION WITH ADCB, REVEALING THEIR ASPIRATIONS AND PLANS FOR THEIR BRIGHT FUTURES Compiled by ALEXANDRIA GOUVEIA
THE ACHIEVER AND EMIRATES WOMAN, WOMAN OF THE YEAR SUMAYYAH AL SUWAIDI
Sponsors of The Achiever Award
GRAPHIC DESIGNER AND OWNER OF LUXURY BOUTIQUE GRAFIKA
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE EMIRATES WOMAN, WOMAN OF THE YEAR? It made me feel that I was not only
recognised but appreciated for all the work I had put in to help and support fellow artists and designers. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND YOUR PROJECTS IN 2012? As a boutique owner, I’m planning to get a bigger space
because of the high demand from the designers and clients, or even open a second branch. As an artist and a curator, I’m participating in a number of exhibitions including a solo exhibition in Dubai. I’ll also be curating a group exhibition internationally. As a fashion designer I’m looking forward to participating in more shows locally and internationally. YOUR RESOLUTION FOR 2012? Having my artwork in a museum and my fashion label, SEEN, in international boutiques. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My daily life – my art is like my diary and my fashion designs are what I feel like wearing. YOUR CREATIVE ICON? Jalal Luqman, my husband. His creativity always leaves me speechless. I’ve also been enjoying Victoria Beckham’s fashion designs. YOUR MOST IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON? Marriage. It made me look at life from a completely different perspective – the things I thought were most important in life turned out to be the least. WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAS THE UAE GIVEN YOU IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM? My education, my first
ever job, the opportunity to be a Khaleeji woman and still be able to have a business and pursue my career in art... The UAE strongly supports its women and gives us equal opportunities, if not more than men. JANUARY 2012

THE ARTIST ALIA AL SHAMSI PIONEERING FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER
HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN YOUR CATEGORY? Just one year ago I was
struggling to define myself. I made mistakes during my journey to find ‘me’, but somehow I did alright. That’s why the award means so much to me. I couldn’t have done it without my newborn son, Ahmad, for his creative contribution over the past nine months! HOW DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND YOUR PROJECTS? I’m setting up my
own company with two amazing partners named The Photographic Corporation. Currently our shoots are on location, but I’m also hunting for a villa. I’d love to create a mini-community of different small businesses that are run by mothers. Creating a place where we can keep our children in a nursery upstairs and have our professional environment downstairs. This would be great for working mums. FAVOURITE STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY?
Street photography. A friend once said that to find out about the community you’re in go into the local grocer. I do the same but with photography. I’m like a curious anthropologist gathering data. WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE THE FIRST EMIRATI WOMEN TO SUCCEED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? First isn’t a
measure of success. To be successful I have to make sure I continue in this field and constantly improve and innovate. It’s important to never get too comfortable. BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Don’t pat a thub [desert lizard]! These suckers bite and never let go! WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAS THE UAE GIVEN YOU IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM? Education.
I was awarded an MA scholarship from EDAAD and later took further courses in Museum Studies at Emirates Foundation. JANUARY 2012

THE HUMANITARIAN SABINA KHANDWANI FOUNDER, SAFE AND SOUND – THE BURJUMAN BREAST CANCER AWARENESS PROGRAMME
HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN YOUR CATEGORY? I thank everyone for their
votes, support and encouragement. I believe recognition is key to doing bigger and better things, no matter what the odds. When it comes to the breast cancer cause, I want every woman in the UAE to be alert, be aware, be safe and sound. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND YOUR PROJECTS? BurJuman’s Safe and
Sound Programme is one of the biggest, most comprehensive breast cancer campaigns in the region and over the years it’s reached over 20 million people. Our mission is to extend the campaign. We’re also adopting a new approach to target corporate environments and highlight the key message of ‘early detection saves lives’. YOUR LIFE MOTTO? There’s no next time, do it now. YOUR HUMANITARIAN ICON?
Mother Teresa – she brought so much hope and love into the lives of the poor. I also have great respect for Lola Lopez of Volunteer in Dubai, she’s so selfless. YOUR ROLE MODEL? My mother, who I lost to cancer in 1999. She was the epitome of strength, courage, positivity and perseverance. WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAS THE UAE GIVEN YOU IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM? Government, partner
and community support has helped us take Safe and Sound to a new level each year. Certainly, the support of BurJuman and the entire team has been pivotal to the success of this programme. YOUR FUTURE PLANS? Providing women with free mammograms, checkups and patient support is our priority. YOUR BIGGEST WISH? For the world to be cancer free.

THE VISIONARIES MAHA ABDUL RASHEED OWNER OF VINTAGE BOUTIQUE BAMBAH
HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU WON YOUR CATEGORY? It’s a great confidence
boost and has already encouraged me to explore new ideas and ventures. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND YOUR PROJECTS? After all the positive feedback,
I’d love to expand in the Middle East, opening boutiques in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Beirut. In the long run, I’d love to diversify and start a bakery – it’s my second favourite hobby, after collecting vintage. YOUR STYLE ICON? Souad Hosny and Jean Patchett – I like the way they’re both very feminine and very confident in their styles. I also admire Olivia Palermo’s elegant style. She mixes different labels, which makes her style unique. YOUR CREATIVE ICON? Raha Moharrak, who designed Bambah’s identity. I love how she doesn’t depend on a computer programme to enhance her work. She always thinks outside the box. WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?
Style is about wearing your mood. Ultimately, I don’t believe there should be any rules when it comes to fashion and I don’t usually follow trends. I love it when an outfit makes a strong statement that says something about the person. I have a soft spot for ruffles, bows and polka dots. YOUR ROLE MODEL? My grandmother. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO REVOLUTIONISE THE FASHION SCENE IN THE UAE? I think people in the UAE
are generally fashionable, but I would like people to integrate more vintage wear into their wardrobe. WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAS THE UAE GIVEN YOU IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM? There is so much room
for innovation. I love learning about other cultures. I also like the bridge between Western and Eastern cultures that you experience here. It’s a very cosmopolitan city with a lot of style and stylish people who enjoy looking good and standing out from the crowd. FUTURE PLANS? I have a couple of [work] shopping trips planned over the next couple of months which should be fun. But, eventually, I would like to venture into bakery as a long-term plan once Bambah is a little older! JANUARY 2012

ADCB AMBITION AWARD SIAN ROWLANDS FOUNDER OF MY EX WARDROBE
HOW HAS WINNING YOUR CATEGORY MOTIVATED YOU? I’m
so flattered that our little idea has been so well received and that we now have the backing and support of such prestigious players. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND YOUR PROJECTS IN 2012? Our plan
was always to take our concept online and we can now do this. We have lots of great ideas on how to grow our events and make them more popular and keep them fresh. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SPEND YOUR US$10,000 BUSINESS GRANT FROM ADCB? The prize money will be added to
our own investment money to pay for the website development and purchase some much-needed equipment for our events. It will also contribute toward the general day-to-day running costs WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS? The
hardest part has been finding enough hours in the day to do everything. I’m still working full-time, so I have two parts to my working day: one in the office and the other when I get home! YOUR STYLE ICON? Zooey Deschanel. But my favourite designer is Elie Saab – his creations are so elegant and graceful. YOUR ROLE MODEL? My dad. He’s always supported me and always challenges me to be a better person. I aspire to be like him. WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?
It’s about expression and having the confidence to express yourself. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO REVOLUTIONISE THE FASHION SCENE IN THE UAE? Through My Ex Wardrobe
we’d like to encourage people to buy second hand clothes because it has many financial and environmental benefits. WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAS THE UAE GIVEN YOU IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM? I grew up in Dubai and
have always wanted to be my own boss, and with the growing demand for small ‘boutique’ brands it seemed like the perfect time to start fulfilling my dream. By finding a gap in the market for something that I believe in so passionately, I’ve discovered that the UAE is a prime place to follow your dreams. 54

V ictoi re DE CASTELLANE The Dior Haute Joaillerie designer on the fantasy world of fine jewellery COMPILED BY CLAIRE CARRUTHERS
W
ith signature fringed bangs and a fondness for black, Dior’s iconic fine jewellery designer, Victoire de Castellane, offers a cross between Morticia Addams and Chrissie Hynde, with a fittingly effortless Parisian ‘coolness’ to match. Having discovered her calling at the tender age of five when she dismantled her mother’s priceless charm bracelet to make a pair of earrings, Victoire entered into a career designing costume jewellery for Chanel, where she remained for 14 years before joining Dior in 1998 to launch the house’s Haute Joaillerie department. Often reinterpreting Dior’s codes, her highly original collections have redefined the conservative world of fine jewellery. Exaggerated proportions, bold colour combinations and hyper-real design details that are simultaneously beautiful and garish bring to life Victoire’s exuberant imagination. Boring they most certainly are not and, much like the whimsical couture gowns they adorn, Victoire’s jewels are gloriously over-the-top, one-of-a-kind works of art.

WHY JEWELLERY DESIGN, AND NOT FASHION? Jewellery was my first passion and still is! SO YOUR HERITAGE WAS A BIG INFLUENCE… Yes, especially my
Dior Couture Gowns
THE INSPIRATION
grandmother [Sylvia Hennessy of the Hennessy Cognac family] who wore sumptuous jewellery that always filled me with wonder when I was a child. I think my passion for jewels came from that indelible childhood memory. AND WHAT ABOUT INSPIRATION TODAY? I have a really strong interest in women and the feminine universe is always my first source of inspiration. Other than that, I’d say nature and fashion – Dior collections are obviously a constant source of inspiration. IS FASHION SOMETHING YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT? To me fashion is not
a ‘passion’, but I truly enjoy choosing and combining outfits to create a feminine silhouette for myself.
WHAT’S THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT THING YOU’VE EVER BOUGHT? A long time
ago I bought a Rolex – a unique piece and a special order for an African president. The eccentric design was inspired by the shape of a gold nugget.
TELL US ABOUT THE LA BAL DES ROSES COLLECTION.
The latest collection is comprised of 12 one-of-a-kind pieces, all designed as if Christian Dior’s favourite flower, the rose, was the personification of the couture house’s first clients; women looking for unique dresses to wear to the most extravagant balls. As is a signature of all of my work, the overall design and shape of each rose is true to reality but the colour combinations are fantastical. Choosing the colours was difficult, but I looked to nature and then selected stones to create the harmonies I was looking for. The collection took two years to create. WHAT KIND OF STONES DID YOU USE? Semi precious stones, which aren’t usually used in Haute Joaillerie, are combined with precious stones so that the sparkle of the diamonds is contrasted with plain colours. LUXURY IS…The artisanal aspect, the meticulous handiwork, the sophisticated technique, the time invested, the quality, and the materials. Unfortunately, luxury is expensive by definition. For me, if it’s accessible to everyone, it’s no longer luxury.
LUXURY IS... THE ARTISANAL ASPECT, THE METICULOUS HANDIWORK, THE SOPHISTICATED TECHNIQUE, THE TIME INVESTED, THE QUALITY, AND THE MATERIALS. UNFORTUNATELY, LUXURY IS EXPENSIVE BY DEFINITION. FOR ME, IF IT'S ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, IT'S NO LONGER LUXURY
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE PIECE FROM LE BAL DES ROSES, OR ANOTHER COLLECTION, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR FAVOURITE? I can’t imagine having a preference
for one of my jewels; for me, they are like children – I love them all! I can’t play favourites. SO YOU MUST BE SAD TO SEE THEM GO… Of course, but I try to force myself not to become too attached. I accept that one day my children will leave home. I’ve gone through the [psychological] process: these jewels are going to leave.

NEW-AGE
BE AUT Y IT’S TIME FOR A FRESH BEAUTY PERSPECTIVE. ADHERE TO THE ADVICE OF THE PROFESSIONALS AND COMMIT TO MAKING 2012 YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL YEAR TO DATE Written by Elizabeth Whiston-Dew
Looking in the mirror, it’s hard to be objective about our own beauty, honing in on even the slightest imperfection or flaw. The gift of makeup can be a huge confidence boost, and as Tom Ford eloquently states: “When you put on your make-up, you are preparing yourself for the world.” This season sees the style icon launch his first cosmetics collection filled with, as he puts it, “glamorous and sexy colour,” so no self-respecting beauty addict ought to go without. With a bold, new aesthetic, this collection isn’t for shrinking violets, and brows are a case in point. “They are the only feature that can change the face without surgery,” Ford quips. Whether arched, angled or gently curved, the statement brow is here to stay. And the tool du jour? The Tom Ford Brow Sculptor (Dhs200), with its calligraphy tip and hidden sharpening device, provides precision application. For look-at-me lips to complement your now exquisitely framed eyes, a berry-toned pout is the order of the day. With more punch than pink and a more sophisticated option than red, Tom Ford’s Lipstick (Dhs230) in Black Orchid does the trick.

Plant power With two rival beauty clans – the organic goddesses and the super sci-fi queens – the great beauty debate of science versus nature seems endless. But French pharmaceutical brand Nuxe, a staple in every chic Parisienne’s Kelly bag, bridges the two categories perfectly. Its spokesperson and laboratory expert, Cécile Debrieve, tells EW: “I see it every day in my job, nature is really where the power lies.” We aren’t talking about a mere misting of rose water and dab of rosebud lip salve, but new power plants such as blue lotus seeds and althaea root, native to Africa where it is revered for its medicinal purposes. These ingredients make up Nuxe’s Nirvanesque Contour des Yeux eye cream (Dhs105), giving a natural botox-like effect to block muscle contraction and stop wrinkles in their tracks. Another new star ingredient is the white crocus, perfect for brightening dark spots and hyper-pigmentation. This clever little springtime bloom is a major discovery in beauty and, present in Nuxe’s Brightening Protective fluid (Dhs189), is every sun-worshipper’s antidote. 78

Sunshine state The sun can be a major frenemy. Too little and we’re in danger of Vitamin D deficiency, too much and we’re on a fast track to sun damage and the big C. In our sunny climes the latter is a huge worry and daily protection is key. The question is, what level of SPF is high enough? “In Europe the highest SPF is 50+ which is 98 per cent effective against UV rays,” says Dr Yuliya Zielinski, guest dermatologist and aesthetician for Eucerin. “So if you use SPF100 there is no clinical advantage. Remember that here in Dubai the texture is also important and you should go for lighter formulas so you don’t clog your skin.” The new breed of SPFs are discreet and efficient, none more so than 3LAB Hydra Day SPF20 (Dhs375). Worth every penny, this water-based daily moisturiser is completely oil free so you won’t have a clogged pore in sight. For a higher level of protection opt for the St Tropez SPF50 Face with Tan Enhancer (Dhs90). With its star ingredient, melanobronze, stimulating melanin production, you can lounge by the pool without the risk of burning.

Whether it’s a nip or tuck, EW brings you the go-to gurus to help you on your way to beauty supremacy WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH WHISTON-DEW AND CHERITH NICHOLL
Rhinoplasty
The expert: Dr Michael Apa, D.D.S. Best for: The most natural-looking veneers in town New York-based Dr Apa is a pioneer of Facial Aesthetic Design, a technique that can transform the look of your face just by adjusting your teeth. Having worked with the A-list and supermodels alike, he is the go-to man for a dental makeover. He tells EW: “Your teeth are the first thing you see when you look in the mirror, they can change the shape of your eyes and even cheekbones.” If you want enhanced cheekbones, the teeth need to angle ever-so-slightly inward. On the flipside, building teeth outwards can have a great antiageing effect. His work looks to a patient's facial features for guidance. So no piano key porcelain veneers. The result: A Hollywood-worthy smile Clinic: Dr Michael’s Clinic, Dubai Price: From Dhs147,000 Tel: (04) 3949433 Website: www.rosenthalapagrp.com Dubai dates: January 28-February 5
Top tips to keep your teeth in check: See the hygienist for cleaning three times a year and invest in an electric toothbrush. Sonicare Diamond Clean is one of the best.

The expert: Dr Andrew Frankel, M.D., F.A.C.S. Best for: A picture-perfect nose Considered by his contemporaries as a leader in his field, Dr Frankel is an award-winning surgeon who specialises in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat). If you’re lucky enough to get on his waiting list to tweak your beak, make sure you’ve done your homework. He says: “When someone is considering what to look for in terms of the new shape of their nose it's vital they can clearly articulate what they dislike about their current nose.” The surgery itself is done under ‘twilight’ sedation, or deep conscious sedation, and there is a down time of around 12 days. The result: A profile to be proud of Clinic: Lasky Clinic, Beverly Hills, USA Price: From Dhs17,000 Tel: (+1) 3105522173 Website: www.rhinoplastyrevisions.com Dubai dates: Summer 2012
Choose the right surgeon: Do your research and look at several photographs of a surgeon’s previous work in order to determine if you like the aesthetic of that doctor. It's vital you think your surgeon knows what looks good.
Face lift The expert: Professor Luiz Toledo, M.D. Best for: Taking years off your birth date This charming Brazilian surgeon, a certified member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, has 36 years of private practice experience. “A face lift is recommended to remedy the problem of excess skin and thus reinstating the curves of the face,” he explains. During the procedure the cheekbones can be sculpted using fat grafting techniques and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be undertaken at the same time. Dr Toledo advises that the stitches are removed one week after the op and the majority of swelling subsides after just 10 days. The result: A more defined and younger version of you Clinic: Mercato Family Clinic, Dubai Price: Dhs30,000-Dhs60,000 Tel: (04) 3448844 Website: www.drluiztoledo.com
Doctor’s tip: “The most important check you can do is to verify that the surgeon is a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in his home country. Checking the operating facility is an absolute must,” says Dr Toledo.

Breast augmentation The expert: Dr Buthainah Al-Shunnar M.D., F.A.C.S. Best for: Increasing your cup size in the right proportion A pioneer in her field and the only American Board Certified female plastic surgeon in Dubai, Dr Al-Shunnar is the go-to lady for a sensitive approach to your op. With 10 years of experience in the US before returning to her native UAE, she says that “a good aesthetic surgery result is one which looks natural and not ‘done’.” Dr Al-Shunnar admirably uses her skills to help breast cancer survivors in need of a woman’s touch for their reconstructive surgery. Top three options for breast augmentation: An implant is put in to replace the lost tissue. Tissue from your own body can used to create added volume and shape. Or a combination of an implant and body tissue can also be used for reconstruction.

“A good aesthetic surgery result is one which looks natural and not ‘done’” – Dr Buthainah Al-Shunnar Tummy tuck The expert: Dr Jaffer Khan M.B., B.S., F.R.C.S.I., F.R.C.S. (Plast.), F.A.C.S Best for: Those who want to revisit their bikini days Often known as a Mummy Makeover, the tummy tuck will get rid of loose skin on the abdomen after pregnancy or weight loss. Dr Khan will talk you through the best type of tummy tuck to ensure you get the best possible result with minimal scarring. The result: A new-found waistline Clinic: Aesthetics International, Dubai Price: Dhs40,000 Contact Tel: (04) 3469888 Website: www.aesthetics.ae
Factoid: A doctor will only perform a long cosmetic procedure if the patient is medically fit – the longer the procedure, the longer they are under anaesthesia and the more risk involved.
Injectable breast The expert: Dr Maurizio Viel Best for: Those who want to go up a cup size without going under the knife With no risk of rejection and no possibility of an allergic reaction, women are flocking to Dr Viel to opt for an organic breast augmentation over implants. Fat is harvested from an area of your body (an added bonus) and then injected to create a fuller appearance. Dr Viel tells EW that the procedure is “ideal for new mothers who want to get back lost volume and those with sufficient fat on their abdomen and thighs.” The procedure can also be done to plump the face and the backs of hands to reduce the appearance of unsightly veins. The result: An instant boost with minimal down time to recover Clinic: London Centre for Cosmetic Surgery, Dubai Price: Dhs23,000 Contact Tel: (04) 3752393 Website: www.lcas.ae
Doctor’s tip: “Don’t be afraid to ask your surgeon questions such as who the anaesthetist is, where the surgery will take place and what risks are involved – a good surgeon should always be willing to provide this information,” says Dr Viel.

IT’S A SKIN WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG THING IN PERFUMERY? THE SEDUCTIVE SCENT OF LEATHER…
F
orget sugary scents that smell more like dessert than something that should be dabbed on one’s wrists. The world of perfume is so much more refined these days. Girly concoctions more suited to Barbie and ‘fresh air’ scents with splashes of lavender are so last century. Modern perfumes are all about the deep and mysterious – igniting reactions and stirring memories. The scent du jour is leather. Not convinced? Just remind yourself of the delicious feeling your senses experience when unwrapping a lambskin handbag, equestrian gear, new shoes, or when you slip into the back of a very expensive new car. The instinct is to draw the leather close to your nose and inhale deeply. This is exactly the inspiration for perfumer Nathalie Larson with Cuir Noir, the latest launch for Armani’s Privé La
Collection des Mille et une Nuits. This range was created to celebrate all things Eastern, with previous scents including Oud Royal, Rose d’Arabie and Ambre Orient, and this ‘Black Leather’ latest addition sits happily alongside. The scent of leather has come a long way from its origins in the 15th century when it was actually considered putrid. However, after evolving over the years, Armani has now transformed the smell with the perfume’s leather note coming from the exact aroma of a new Jaguar interior. But, of course, alongside the leather sit some other fabulous ingredients too. Larsen has managed to create a scent that encapsulates all the good stuff related to leather tanning – the carnal animal elements, along with the tarry aroma of black birch, amber and spices like coriander and nutmeg. Tahitian vanilla punctuates throughout and adds only
the smallest hint of sweetness. The whole fragrance is feminised with the inclusion of the finest rose oil – distilled from the petals so it offers a light and powdery element. The backbone, though, is close to all Arabian hearts and that is the smokiness of oud, the perfect scent to wear day or night, and especially good with the balmy Arabian Gulf breeze. Get ready to inhale…
Allow extra time post check-in as you’ll most definitely be side tracked by the new Giorgio Armani boutique that has opened in Dubai airport. It has the renowned Crema Nera women’s skincare products from Pantelleria, all the quietly confident colours for eyes, lips and cheeks, the make-up artist’s favourite Luminous Silk Foundation, along with the last word in luxury when it comes to fragrances.

FOOD TABOOS
With so many conflicting reports on what we should and shouldn’t eat, it’s difficult to know what’s good and what’s bad for us these days. EW investigates the so-called miracle foods and whether ‘bad’ ingredients are really that harmful to our health WRITTEN BY RACHEL SILVESTRI

ating well can be a constant struggle. While we’re all educated enough to know that more fruit and vegetables, whole grains and non-processed foods make up the ideal diet, most of us also fight an ongoing battle as we desperately try to avoid the snacks and junk food we know are bad for us. But with a constant stream of often conflicting information from nutritionists, doctors, food agencies and the medical industry dictating what’s good and bad for us, healthy eating has become something of a grey area. Should we be eating more fish for its omega-3s, or less because of its mercury content? Should we up our intake of ‘good fats’ or cut them due to cholesterol risks? Where does the truth about our food really lie? “The most common misconceptions regarding ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods rely heavily on the colour, such as brown being better than white in sugar and bread, in addition to ‘diet’ labels on products ranging from ‘natural’ juices to low-fat and sugar-free products,” says Sara Ismail, a Clinical Dietician at Lively Abu Dhabi. She stresses that while it’s important to read labels, a good deal of common sense is needed to truly understand them – and fruit juice is the perfect example. “We find a large number of juices on supermarket shelves, but which ones are best?” asks Sara. “Nectar cans indicate that sugar has been added to the original fruit juice. Natural juice means that no sugar has been added. But it’s important to note that natural juice still have fructose in it, the natural sugar found in fruits. So calories still count and they are not insignificant.” Dr Javier Magnago, Specialist Registrar at Dubai Hospital, agrees: “An orange contains a certain amount and type of carbohydrate, but if you drink the juice from it, it has a much higher glycemic index as it’s absorbed much faster and creates a higher peak of glucose in the blood than if you eat the whole orange.” So to avoid that glucose peak – a sugar rush resulting in a following ‘crash’, causing cravings for more sugary foods and promoting weight gain – the whole orange and a glass of water is much better. And it’s not just fruit

CAN YOU ALWAYS BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ? SOME OF THESE COMMONLY-HELD BELIEFS ABOUT HEALTHY EATING AREN’T ALL THAT THEY SEEM… WHILE OTHERS ARE 100 PER CENT TRUE
FALSE: OILY FISH INCREASES BRAIN POWER “Reading, playing Sudoku and switching off the TV increases your brain power,” says Dr Javier. “Fish oil does not.” However, oily fish is still good for you: “Omega-3 fats found in fatty fish are especially beneficial to the heart,” says Sara. “They may also protect against irregular heartbeats and help lower blood pressure levels.” FALSE: LOW-FAT MEANS LESS CALORIES “In terms of dairy products, it is recommended to turn to low-fat choices because they do cut the calories and reduce the total saturated fat content naturally present in dairy products,” says Sara. “However, while low-fat candy and sweets do contain a lower content 92

of fat, they usually still contain a considerable amount of sugars, sweeteners and carbohydrates that add up to calories. Low-fat does not mean free of calories.” FALSE: BROWN SUGAR IS LESS FATTENING THAN WHITE SUGAR “They both contain the calories but they differ in the processing method,” says Sara. “Bleach is used to whiten the white sugar, whereas the brown remains the same.” FALSE: ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAUSE CANCER AND OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS “Artificial sweeteners have been the subject of intense scrutiny for decades,” says Sara, “but according to the National Cancer Institute in the USA and other health agencies, there’s no sound
scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved for use cause cancer or other serious health problems.” TRUE: WE DON’T NEED TO ADD SALT TO OUR DIET “In the modern world, soduim – salt – is already present in a lot of forms such as preservatives and processed food, so you don’t really need to add it to your diet, as it’s bad for hypertension – high blood pressure,” says Dr Javier. “One exception might be if you do sports and sweat, as you lose electrolytes including sodium, potassium and chloride from your body. So a sports drink containing these minerals helps with fast recovery.” TRUE: YOGHURT AIDS DIGESTION
SARA SAYS YOGHURT IS THE PERFECT SNACK: “It’s rich in calcium, proteins and helps reduce constipation.” TRUE: COLD-PRESSED OLIVE OIL IS BETTER FOR US THAN NORMAL OLIVE OIL Cold-pressed olive oil that hasn’t been heated is full of polyunsaturated fatty acids that help protect against clogged arteries. “But,” says Dr Javier, “if you heat the oil it becomes a saturated fat, which is not good for you. So don’t use your expensive cold-pressed olive oil for cooking, use the regular one.” TRUE: IT’S BETTER TO EAT DINNER EARLY “Have dinner at least two to three hours before sleep,” says Sara. “You need that time to digest it properly.”

health/what not to eat juice where the lines between good and bad become blurred – ‘diet’ labels can hide some rather surprising ingredients. “Being labelled low fat doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you,” says nutritional therapist Laura Holland of Inshallah. “Many times these foods have just had loads of sugar added in place of the fat that has been taken out to keep the taste pleasing. So in many cases you would be better off eating the original product.” An exception to this rule may be artificial sweeteners in diet drinks such as Diet Coke – despite years of rumours that these sweeteners cause nasty health problems including cancer, these claims have never been proven. However, artificial sweeteners are still a processed food and don’t carry the health benefits of fresh, whole foods. A prime example of confusion around another serious health issue is cholesterol – conflicting reports about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol, diseases it causes and foods that supposedly increase cholesterol levels abound. So much research goes into the causes and effects of high cholesterol that it’s difficult to know how, or even if, to tackle it. But some basic medical facts are all that are needed to solve the cholesterol conundrum. “Cholesterol is a specific type of fat that the body needs to function,” says Dr Javier. “In the blood you never find cholesterol alone, but combined or transported by lipoproteins, some of which are high density lipoproteins [HDL], others low [LDL] and others very low density [VLDL]. HDL is called ‘good’ cholesterol because its function is to remove cholesterol from the cells that cover the inside of arteries and capillaries, helping to prevent hardening of SARA ISMAIL, CLINICAL DIETICIAN AT LIVE’LY the arteries. LDL and especially VLDL do the ABU DHABI, WWW.LIVELY.AE opposite so they’re called ‘bad’ cholesterol. LAURA HOLLAND, NUTRITIONAL “The body can make all the cholesterol it THERAPIST, WWW.INSHALLAH.ORG.UK needs, so you don’t really need it in your diet. Any DR JAVIER MAGNAGO, SPECIALIST animal fat has cholesterol, but no vegetable fat or REGISTRAR AT DUBAI HOSPITAL, oil has cholesterol that the body will absorb from JMAGNAGO@DHA.GOV.AE your diet,” adds Dr Javier. So reducing intakes of animal fats is sensible for those watching their cholesterol, while vegetable fats shouldn’t give us anything to worry about. In fact, the belief that ‘good’ vegetable fats, despite being better than animal fats, will still make you put on weight is one that annoys many nutritional therapists, Laura included: “I've heard people say avocados and nuts make us fat. They don’t, and it is not the reason people experience challenges with their weight. Avocados and nuts are full of good fats that enhance our metabolism and help to make us leaner.” However, Sara adds her own word of warning: “Always keep in mind that ‘fat is fat’ when it comes to calories. So the energy that these fats give is still high and must be controlled in portions. Make wise choices to include ‘good’ vegetable fats in your daily diet while managing portion sizes and cutting down on fats from animal sources and desserts.” With new research into the effects of food released every day, the rules are ever changing, but there’s one constant we can all follow... eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, control your portions and cut down on treats to stay in shape. ■

POSITIVE EATING WITH SO MUCH INFORMATION ON FOOD AVAILABLE TO US, IT’S EASY TO FORGET THE FUNDAMENTALS – OUR EXPERTS CUT THROUGH THE CONFUSION AND GET BACK TO THE BASICS OF GOOD EATING DR JAVIER’S SIMPLE CHECKLIST FOR A FAD-FREE, BALANCED AND HEALTHY DIET:
1. Eat more vegetables and fruits 2. Put limits on the amount of fat you eat 3. Cut down on quickly-absorbed carbohydrates 4. If you’re overweight, cut down your overall calorie intake LAURA HOLLAND’S TOP TIPS FOR EASY, HEALTHY EATING: “Keep it simple and just try to eat good,
old fashioned food – food that actually looks like food, rather than stuff that’s been processed to within an inch of its life and is practically unrecognisable. This stuff is dead and does nothing to feed your body, so try to incorporate a large natural food element in every meal. An easy way to know that you are doing this is to try and increase the amount of raw food that you eat, this way you can be sure that you are eating natural, energy rich, vitality-boosting food.” SARA ISMAIL’S COLOURFUL ANTIOXIDANT ADVICE:
“Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer, and antioxidants act to neutralise them. Antioxidants are abundant in fruit and vegetables, as well as in other foods including nuts, grains, and some meats, poultry, and fish. Important sources include: Orange foods: sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, apricots, oranges pumpkin and mangoes. Green, leafy vegetables: collard greens, spinach and kale. Red-fleshed fruit: Tomatoes, watermelon, guava, papaya and grapefruit.”

Highlights included the funding of 24 schools in Pakistan (US$710,000), an IWC watch (US$85,000), and an original artwork by Pablo Picasso (US$50,000). Regional celebrities, including Emirati film-maker Ali Mustafa and Egyptian film star Amr Waked, were special guests along with Bollywood legend Rahul Bose, Hollywood actor Owen Wilson, supermodel Helena Christensen and singer Ronan Keating, who provided the evening’s entertainment. It was truly a night to remember. n

agenda/stars
news around the time of the Cancer full moon on the 9th – this is a sensitive period for you. Lie low and see what transpires at your place of work. As much as you’d like to put up a fight, you may be wasting both your time and your energy, without a reality check. This month’s memo: Try to contain your emotions.
HOROSCOPES YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY
HOROSCOPES BY PETRA DU PREEZ / ILUSTRATION BY AREZOU ERJACKI
(DEC 22 – JAN 20)
Your year commences on an intense note, but for someone like you, who takes life seriously, this is a welcome relief. Be sure to set some realistic goals for yourself and don’t omit the very important balancing point for work, which relates to play and relaxation. You often work far too hard, but this month you're intent on getting the maximum dose of fun. If in-laws dabble in your affairs at home, take a stand to counteract that. This month’s memo: Ring in the changes at home. Birthday wish: To have yet another successful year at work.
AQUARIUS (JAN 21 – FEB 19) You're seemingly quite happy with the way things are going as far as your home and family life is concerned. If you had an unlimited budget, you could really do all those things you’d like to do. However, as with most things in life, one has to acknowledge one’s boundaries. That is very true as far as your debt is concerned this month. This month’s memo: Do not bury yourself under a mountain of debt. PISCES (FEB 20 – MAR 20) Love diva Venus settles into your sign on the 14th and promises to keep you happy and content for most of the month. Take note though that warrior Mars moves backwards into your love horoscope on the 24th, which needs careful handling. You definitely need
harmony and tact to calm down your other half. This month’s memo: Negotiating is better than confronting. ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) You start the year off on a motivated note and your work seems to benefit from this hardworking ethic. However, keep in mind that you’re good at starting things, so let someone else do the follow through. You also need to monitor your energy levels as your planet, Mars, goes backwards on the 24th. This month’s memo: Don’t take abundant energy for granted. TAURUS (APR 21 – MAY 21) You’re still the flavour of the year, what with popular Jupiter gracing your sign. It’s a good time to take calculated risks, as you probably have more luck than
usual. The same, however, doesn’t apply to your love life. Your partner seems to be quite unhappy towards the end of the month. This month’s memo: Allow your partner the ups and downs in life. GEMINI (MAY 22 – JUN 21) You’re all geared up to start 2012 on an organised note, especially at home. You’re able to accomplish much more during the first three weeks of the month, but come the 24th you either run out of steam or are having second thoughts. As always though, if the communication lines are open, you’re happy. This month’s memo: Be realistic about what’s achievable at home. CANCER (JUN 22 – JULY 23) Brace yourself for some unexpected
LEO (JULY 24 – AUG23) You’re so intent on making a success of your career this year that you’re perhaps not keeping an eye on what you're spending in order to achieve your goal. Although it’s an excellent time for progress at work, keep a close eye on your income and expenses. Be careful on the 24th when you're bound to have to cough up some big money. This month’s memo: Balance your financial books. VIRGO (AUG 24 – SEPT 23) It seems to be a divine time for love, especially around the 14th. The combination of Venus and Mars in your sign is making you appear more magnetic than usual. Keep in mind, though, that your energy and will might flag when Mars moves retrograde in your sign on the 24th. This month’s memo: Endeavour to maintain a steady mood. LIBRA (SEPT 24 – OCT 23) Your partner might be acting in a strange and unusual manner towards the end of the month, which will certainly leave you feeling anxious. Try not to probe too much and let them come to you naturally. Having Saturn in your sign for such a long time has made you quite mature. This month’s memo: Have faith in your relationship. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV21) It’s not in your nature to form superficial friendships. So, it may come as a surprise that a close friend is either turning on you or withdrawing from your company. Chances are that this has nothing to do with you or what you said. Nevertheless, check it out and show your friend that you’re supportive through the ups and the downs. This month’s memo: Value your ability to be intuitive. n JANUARY 2012
