“Building something meaningful doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient, stay true to your values, and trust the process; success will come when the timing is right”
What or who have influenced your design aesthetic? Perfection of the woman nature. Tell us more about the inspiration behind the collaboration with The Dubai Edition? Brand values and aesthetics – we have recognised these common key points with The Edition Dubai and it made our choice from all the great variety of opportunities. We were looking for a new, highly contemporary format for our very first boutique in the new market. Key styles showroom, the highest quality focus and super service for those who are always on the move including fitting at the hotel rooms – that’s the plan.
As a founder, what is the greatest risk you’ve faced in growing your business and how did you know it was one you should take? The greatest risk I faced in growing VAARA was transitioning from wholesale to a direct-to-consumer approach. While it was a bold move, I recognised it was essential to forge a deeper connection with our customers and gain complete control over our brand narrative. This decision ultimately aligned with our long-term vision and allowed us to grow meaningfully.
Which pieces drive sales consistently and what separates VAARA apart from other competitors? Our products are not white label; we are proud to produce everything in Europe, ensuring impeccable quality and craftsmanship. The cornerstone of our brand is our Eco Seamless range, which we believe is the most comfortable activewear on the market. This range stands out not only for its perfect fit and luxurious feel but also for its sustainable materials, making it a firm favourite among the VAARA customers.
What’s your proudest achievement since you started VAARA? If you ask our customers what VAARA stands for, they consistently say: quality. This recognition fills me with pride because it reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering the best. We prioritise honesty, respect, and authentic conversations with our customers. At VAARA it’s about quality, not hype, and knowing that our customers value this ethos is incredibly rewarding.
What are your daily non-negotiable practices to set yourself up for an optimal body and mind? As a founder of a successful business, I truly appreciate the value of a slow morning routine. While my mornings can often be hectic, especially as a mother of three, I’ve found that starting the day at a relaxed pace can make a significant difference. Even just a couple of minutes of morning meditation or a 10-minute stretch sets a positive tone for the day ahead. I’ve also learned that planning my schedule hour by hour helps me stay organised and focused.
What is your design philosophy and how do you keep VAARA one step ahead of competitors? At VAARA, our design philosophy is anchored in the principles of simplicity, quality, and purposefulness. We are dedicated to crafting designs that empower women to feel beautiful and confident without complicating the experience. Each piece we create is meticulously designed to enhance a woman's lifestyle, whether she is engaged in dynamic activities or enjoying moments of relaxation. We place immense value on quality, which is why we exclusively manufacture in Europe. This decision not only guarantees exceptional craftsmanship but also allows us to maintain stringent oversight over every aspect of the manufacturing process. To ensure we remain at the forefront of the industry, it is vital to cultivate a distinct and unwavering perspective that we express boldly. At VAARA, we wholeheartedly embrace innovative ideas and trust our instincts to guide us. By staying authentic to our brand identity while possessing the courage to explore new avenues, we consistently maintain our position ahead of our competitors.
Let’s talk about the growth strategy and the brand’s expansion to Dubai. What influenced this and how did you manage scaling while retaining quality? Expanding into the Middle East was a strategic decision driven by the region’s growing focus on wellness. In Dubai, there’s a unique mix of women who appreciate high standards and understand the value of thoughtful design. This market aligns perfectly with our brand’s values, and it’s exciting to grow in such a dynamic environment.
How do you see the future of the brand - are there any category expansions and new goals on the horizon? While I can’t reveal all the details just yet, I can share that VAARA is moving towards offering spa services, beauty clinics, and wellness retreats. This aligns with our mission to create a complete lifestyle experience for our customers. These expansions are an extension of our vision, and we’re excited to share more soon – stay tuned!
What is your advice to women who want to launch their own business or for personal growth? My advice to women is to invest in quality –whether it’s a product, idea, or vision – and take the time to nurture it. Building something meaningful doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient, stay true to your values, and trust the process; success will come when the timing is right.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay optimistic? I stay optimistic by focusing on the positive and believing in the power of energy and intention. I truly believe that our thoughts have the ability to shape our reality. Optimism not only helps me navigate challenges but also fuels creativity and resilience, allowing me to thrive even in difficult times.

Investment Pieces
Founder of GROES, Dilly Groes, discusses launching the core collection of the brand, focusing on quality over quantity and staying optimistic as an entrepreneur
What does the first 30 minutes of you day look like, your morning routine? I am such a morning person; I am always my most productive in the morning. I usually wake up around 6-6:30am and get some kind of movement in before I will walk my dog and am usually at my desk by 8-8:30. What was the vision from the outset for GROES and how did your previous roles support your ability to do this? The vison for the brand really came from the styling element, after years of working in the online/digital fashion landscape I just felt that online shopping had become so monotonous and unimaginative. With GROES, I wanted to not only create your perfect capsule wardrobe, at an attainable price, but also show you how to make the most of the pieces. We did this by shooting each piece in our collection in three looks (work, evening and weekend) and even giving you the links to buy the full looks. My aim is to highlight the power of investment pieces and hopefully encourage people to buy better and less. What is the DNA of GROES and have these evolved over time? Quality and Versatility is really at the core of GROES. When starting this brand, my main objective was to create those pieces you want to grab again and again, which are not only comfortable but instantly elevate any outfit. Did you always know you would launch your own brand, or has it evolved organically? I think there was always a part of me that wanted to start my own brand at some point in my career, but I never really knew how or when it would happen. I have worked in fashion since my school holidays, I remember interning at Alexander McQueen at 16 and being so inspired by everything. I think the longer I worked in fashion and the more experience I gained; I got more confidence in myself and understanding in what it took to launch a brand. Your launch was so successful – what was your launch strategy and who do you go to for advice? Thank you so much! I have been so blown away from the response. I think the main thing I have learnt is to not get distracted by too many opinions or ask too many people for advice, especially before you launch, you really need to trust your gut. If you spend the time and put in the work to make the perfect pieces and create inspiring, exciting imagery, it will speak for itself.
What was the final catalyst to you knowing now was the time? I think in the past few years the gap between luxury and high street fashion has been getting larger and it was getting increasingly hard to find ‘attainable luxury’ pieces where you weren’t compromising on quality. I truly believed I could create the product to help bridge this gap. On top of that, I also saw there was a gap in multi-brand styling in the ecommerce space. Both things made me feel like I could finally take the leap! How do you approach scaling without compromising on quality? Good question, I think in terms of scaling, I have been conscious to not overproduce and get myself in a situation where I have to cut any corners or comprise on any of the brand’s values. Our collections are small, curated and considered and I plan to keep it this way, even as we grow.
How many collections will you be doing per year? Right now, I want to really understand what our customers want and what GROES can provide whilst keeping our quality and price. We will be doing two core collections a year, I am currently finalising our Summer Core which will be out in April, as well as two mini drops in January and June.
How challenging was it to find the right manufacturer and distributors and were there many iterations of these? It was really challenging, but I really loved the process. My team and I are aligned in our values when looking for the right manufactures and fabrics. We eventually found our amazing manufactures, who are really supportive of small brands and are happy to produce in smaller volumes, which was really important.
What has been the most effective marketing that has delivered results and how do you see social media in your business space? Getting real customers who love the pieces sharing the brand is a really undervalued area of marketing. I have done no influencer
marketing at all, but instead focussed on making everyone who buys a piece of the collection feel part of our growing community.
What has been the biggest challenge since launching to date? I think as a founder with a very small team the biggest challenge has been juggling all the different tasks as well as focussing on the bigger picture and how to keep up momentum.
What has been the biggest reward? Definitely seeing the way people have styled and interpreted our collection and how confident and happy people are wearing the pieces, there is nothing better!
Who has inspired you in terms of business and life, and why?
Working alongside Alex Eagle for four years and seeing how she has grown such a namesake brand is constant inspiration to me, she has become a great friend and mentor who I am so grateful for. I am also constantly in awe of Bryony Deery, the community she has single handedly has built whilst also being one of the most generous, supportive people with her time is something I aspire to do/be!
What daily practices do you undertake to ensure you stay in your best energy? I am such a routine person, I would say creating a routine that you love sets you up to have a great, energised day. I also always do some kind of movement before starting work in the morning whether that’s running, walking or the gym.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own brand or business? I think my biggest piece of advice would be to just start, the hardest thing is putting pen to paper and beginning the process. My first step was finding a business plan template online which I would work on during the weekends or in the evenings. I think it always seems impossible before you start the process, but once you do, everything comes together, and you will see your idea come to life. This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay optimistic and which tools/apps /platforms do you use? I think a big part of staying optimistic is who you surround yourself with. I have the most supportive and inspiring friends, family and mentors. Being a small business can be isolating and knowing you have people at the end of the phone when you are having a bad day is invaluable. I also think taking each day as it comes and trying to find things each day to look forward to and be grateful for is important. When it’s busy it’s easy to feel overwhelmed but try enjoying the little things in life find moments of happiness in each day.

NEW DIRECTIONS
The fashion industry is in a state of flux. From Dries Van Noten, Chanel to Maison Margiela, last year brought forth notable shake ups and designer departures. With the changing of the creative guards, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year ahead
HAIDER ACKERMANN
JULIAN KLAUSNER
MATTHIEU BLAZY
LOUISE TROTTER
In March, news circulated of Dries Van Noten’s exit from his namesake label and he showed his final collection in June at Men’s Paris Fashion Week. In December, it was announced that 33-year-old Belgian designer Julian Klausner, a member of Dries Van Noten’s design team who worked alongside Dries himself since 2018, was promoted internally and will be showcasing his first women’s collection at Paris Fashion Week in March. Last June, Virginie Viard’s sudden exit from Chanel
has speculated rumors with the fashion industry on her potential replacement. With such big shoes to fill, the French luxury brand has finally announced Matthieu Blazy as its new Artistic Director of Fashion, who announced his exit Bottega Veneta has sent ripples in the fashion industry. September and October came in with a flurry of announcements from some of the biggest fashion houses. Following her exit from Alexander McQueen in 2023, Sarah Burton took over the creative role at Givenchy, following the footsteps of Lee McQueen who served as the artistic director from 1996 to 2001. Haider Ackermann was appointed as creative director at Tom Ford, replacing a short stint by inside talent Peter Hawkings. Tom Ford said, “I have long been a great fan of Haider’s work. I find both his womenswear and menswear equally compelling. He is an incredible colorist, his tailoring is sharp, and above all he is modern. We share many of the same historical references, and I could not be more excited to see what he does with the brand. I suspect that I will be the first on my feet to applaud after his show in March.” French Maison Celine ended the speculations as it announced the departure of Hedi Slimane. Having served as the artistic, creative and image director for the past seven years and taking the reins from Phoebe Philo in 2017, Slimane has reimagined the iconic house codes and introduced new territories such as couture and fragrances, resulting in a profitable success, securing its position as LVMH’s third largest fashion house. Before the dust settled, American designer Michael Rider was announced to be replacing Slimane. Previously at Polo Ralph Lauren, Rider began his design career with Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga and for a decade with Phoebe Philo at Celine. Adding to the whirlwind of changes, British designer Kim Jones exited Fendi as women’s artistic director for haute couture and ready-towear collections, a position he has held for four eventful years, succeeding Karl Lagerfeld who served as the creative director until his passing in 2019. As of time of publishing, the Italian house has yet to announce a replacement for the coveted role. Rounding off December, John Galliano has parted ways with Maison Margiela winding up a 10-year tenure at an all-time high with his 2024 Artisanal Collection. In an Instagram statement, Galliano addressed whispers of where he’s supposedly heading, “The rumors... Everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream. When the time is right, all will be revealed.” Capping of the year, Bottega Veneta appointed British designer Louise Trotter to bring her pared-back sensibilities to the Italian brand.

THE POWER OF PAUSING
WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI
Image Consultant and Wardrobe Specialist, Ale Platz, discusses having a mindful approach to shopping, curating a capsule wardrobe, and keeping a positive perspective
Can you tell us how you started in the fashion industry? I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember. I was choosing my own outfits at 4-years old and going shopping and making all of the decisions. l always knew l wanted to work in fashion – l just wasn’t sure in what capacity, so l studied PR knowing that l could apply that career to fashion. After trying a few different paths, l can wholeheartedly say that nothing brings me more joy than personal styling and image consulting. The one-on-ones with my clients fulfill me not only professionally, but emotionally – seeing the impact that developing their style together can have is genuinely inspiring. In 2024, you went a year without shopping. What was the catalyst for this and will you be continuing this in 2025? For anyone who knows me, if you told them I would go an entire year without clothes shopping, they wouldn’t believe you – I love shopping! But I realised I was feeling constantly overwhelmed by the amount of clothes and felt like every week l had to dedicate precious time off to keeping on top of it. It felt like my clothes owned me instead of me owning them! So, l knew l had to do something drastic about it and decided to go shopping-free for a full year! For 2025, l will allow myself a few new things. However, l will keep a mindful approach to shopping making conscious and intentional decisions. The luxury industry is filled with temptation in terms of consumption. How did you cultivate this mindset and how did you manage this? It absolutely is a constant stream of temptation! But this was also one of the reasons to stop shopping. With the relentless new trends and the appetite for fashion’s latest “It” thing. It felt like a never-ending chase, so l wanted to completely remove myself from it. And it worked really well, l now feel empowered and trust my purchasing decisions a lot more. How can one tackle wardrobe organisation and decluttering as a positive experiencewhat are some effective methods that actually deliver game-changing results? This is my absolute favourite thing to do with my clients! The methodology I have developed – which seems to resonate with all of my clients – is to start sorting by category, take all the items from that category out of your closet, place them on your bed and objectively look at them: when was the last time you used it? Does it fit your body type and skin tone? Would you be okay running into someone you dislike whilst you are wearing it? If yes, then it goes back in your closet. If the answer is no to any of those questions, then donate it, sell it or swap it with your friends. The second hardest part of the organisation process is the maintenance – what would be your advice? This might sound boring but, in order to keep your wardrobe organised you need to have systems in place, and you need to be consistent. Firstly, everything needs to be divided into categories, such as casual bottoms, work bottoms, formal tops, etc. Then break down those categories and colour coordinate so that you can find everything quickly. Lastly, and most importantly, stay on top of putting your things away after laundry or trying them on.
in its simplicity, and simple doesn’t mean basic. Spending the time curating a capsule wardrobe has honestly been one of the biggest game changers not just for me, but for my clients as well. So, if you feel like you are constantly exhausted and frustrated at the time of choosing outfits and getting dressed each day, a capsule could be the solution to your problems.
How do you approach following the trends game yet remaining true to your own sense of style? This is an important question that l always discuss with clients. If you follow every trend, where would that leave your personal style? I like to start with my clients by having a good foundation of classic and timeless pieces – for example, black tailored pants and a beautiful white shirt. Once you have all those foundation pieces, you can add a couple of trendy pieces per season to throw into the mix.
“It felt like my clothes owned me instead of me owning them! So, l knew l had to do something drastic about it and decided to go shopping-free for a full year!”
The way we dress can affect the way we feel and how others perceive us. What do you reach for when you want to feel like your best positive self? Dressing up should feel like an extension of your personality and it’s a way to communicate without speaking. When l want to feel like my best positive self l tend to reach for one of my maxi dresses if l’m in the house; if l am going out, one of my favourite LBD, and l can never feel sad when l am wearing a swimsuit because it means I’m at a pool or the beach, my natural habitat. Wear whatever you feel happy and confident and beautiful in. Confidence is irresistible!
To you, what are your personal favourite brands for capsule wardrobe pieces? There are so many amazing brands out there for building your dream capsule. Some of my favourites are: Everlane: for great timeless pieces; LIMÉ: for a good mix of capsule pieces and ontrend styles; Uniqlo: perfect for buying all the wardrobe capsule pieces with good quality and at a good price; Vince and Theory: for upscale options which can elevate any outfit.
You are also an advocate for building a capsule wardrobe. How can one take a holistic and curated approach to shopping? I can honestly say that without a capsule wardrobe l could simply not have achieved going without shopping for a whole year. My capsule wardrobe is my secret weapon. The beauty of a capsule collection is that you know that each piece works well with every other piece, so you feel confident in your decision making. The key lies
This is The Optimism Issue – what are the tools and practices that help you maintain a positive perspective? Optimism is so important. I try to only ever think and say positive things about myself – and if l catch myself having a negative thought, l quickly think, would l say that about someone l love? And the answer is always no, so why would l be saying that to myself? It works wonders for a positive mindset and self-love. Also, I'm a huge advocate for finding time to celebrate the little things: any excuse to get together with loved ones, have a beautiful dinner or however you fancy celebrating, always embrace the small victories!

“Our DNA is to bring an elevated approach –though aesthetic, curation, partnerships and community”
BFORE and After
Formerly at Dior for over a decade, Bridie Forster, founder of BFORE Agency, discusses making the leap of faith and an optimistic outlook for driving your own business forward
What do the first 30 minutes of you day look like, your morning routine? As a working mother, the first 30 minutes of my day is dedicated to my three children. In an ideal world, I’d exercise every morning as I find it helps with mental clarity and relieving stress, however time doesn’t always permit this, so I don’t have a set routine. I would love to be the type of person who meditates and starts the day in a calm way, but for now, that is not my reality!
What was the vision from the outset for BFORE and how did your previous roles support your ability to do this?
It is an interesting time in the beauty industry because we are seeing many international brands entering the market. As I was already immersed in the industry it felt like a natural transition to bring my big brand experience to brands that are growing and scaling. Beauty and wellness is a varied and diverse industry and one that is my passion. I strongly believe that a communications partner on the ground who can effectively articulate a brand’s narrative through organic, earned media, relevant authentic influencer collaborations, and a curated community is invaluable.
Ultimately at BFORE, we are storytellers. We understand each brands’ core value propositions and support their community marketing approaches, ensuring that the way we tell their stories resonates deeply.
What is the DNA of BFORE and have these evolved over time? In this fiercely competitive landscape and with new beauty brands entering the region all the time, it is essential for us to find innovative ideas to engage with our brands’ communities. Our DNA is to bring an elevated approach – though aesthetic, curation, partnerships and community.
Did you always know you would launch your own agency, or has it evolved organically? It was really a conversation that I had with my mentors and formers colleagues who are working with brands
looking to enter the Middle East that planted the seed to open a specialist beauty agency. Over a certain period, a few of them reached out to me looking for a strong beauty communications partner in the region. I saw there was an opportunity to bring my 20 years of experience working in the beauty industry in the Middle East through my role at Parfums Christian Dior for over a decade, and my previous role at The Estée Lauder Companies, working at La Mer, Bobbi Brown and Jo Malone London, to these brands entering and navigating the market for the first time. It is an honour to be the trusted partner of the brands in our portfolio; Glossier, Summer Fridays, Augustinus Bader and Slip. How do you approach scaling without compromising on quality? I really think that having the best people in the team makes all the difference. I am optimistic that if you have a strong team, who are aligned with your DNA and vision, you will be able to scale without compromising on quality.
What has been the most effective marketing that has delivered results and how do you see social media in your business space? It’s all about relationships. Whether at brand level or with editors, influencers and industry experts. This network who has supported me throughout my career, both at big brand level and now working with a diverse portfolio, is something I am very grateful for and don’t take for granted. We have used social platforms to build our community of people who are authentically interested in the portfolio we represent. What has been the biggest challenge since launching to date? I listened to a podcast with Laney Crawley, founder of beauty brand Saie, who said when she faced challenges in her early days of launching her brand, she reminded herself that she wanted this challenge and leaned into it. That has rung true for me and when I am facing something outside of my comfort zone, I try to keep that mindset. What has been the biggest reward? I have loved engaging a team that is young and eager to grow and learn. It’s not easy to be in a start-up environment and being surrounded by motivated, smart, younger people is something that gives me great joy. And as the company grows, it will become more of a focus of my time that we create a company culture that is happy, and that people like to be part of. Who has inspired you in terms of business and life, and why? Clare Goodwin, founder of CGC Global, the agency that BFORE is in partnership with, has been a great inspiration and a mentor throughout my career. Clare is always ahead of the curve, brings strong expertise and has impeccable taste across everything she does. Do you believe in visualisation and how has it impacted our life? I do. I have worked with executive coaches during my corporate career and during this time I was introduced to the power of manifesting. I think it can be such a powerful tool and is a great way to encourage focus. I also think it is a great way to reflect on things, to revisit your intentions and see your evolution. What daily practices do you undertake to ensure you stay in your best energy? Oh gosh, this is something I need to work on. I really believe in the positive endorphins that exercise releases, and I am an avid reader which gives me great escapism. I also recharge by being around others who have positive energy – I find it contagious – in the best possible way!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own brand or business? Find something you truly love to do. Hire people smarter and younger than you and combine networks. Be open to collaboration – there is enough room for everyone in the industry and spending time with other business owners can be invaluable. Remain true to the DNA of what you set out to build, even if that means saying no to opportunities.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay optimistic and which tools/ apps / platforms do you use? I try to seek joy in the little moments of daily life. As a society there is much conversation around big moments of joy and creating core memories, but for me, it’s about recognising and appreciating the small daily moments that all add up to create a feeling of overall optimism.
“I really believe in the positive endorphins that exercise releases, and I am an avid reader which gives me great escapism. I also recharge by being around others who have positive energy – I find it contagious – in the best possible way!”

TRAINING YOUR MIND
Globally renowned speaker, founder of Rapid Transformational Therapy and best-selling author, Marisa Peer tells us how to train our minds to stay positive for an uplifting 2025
How can we train our minds to default to an optimistic outlook? Your mind responds to the words you say to yourself and the pictures that you make in your head. It can’t differentiate between what’s good or bad, true or false – it simply accepts it all as fact and works to make it your reality. This is why being intentional about your thoughts is so powerful – it’s like giving your mind a roadmap for success and positivity. Of course, with the average person having over 60,000 thoughts a day, this can feel overwhelming at first. That’s why awareness is key. Instead of getting caught in a loop of automatic thoughts and emotions, practice observing your thoughts with curiosity. When you step into this role of observer, you can see clearly what you’re feeding your mind daily – and decide whether it’s nourishing or toxic. Mindfulness is an excellent way to begin this process. For example, you might try setting aside a few minutes each day to pause, breathe deeply, and ask yourself, “What am I telling myself right now?” If the answer is negative or unhelpful, flip it into something positive and constructive. Repetition is your secret weapon. Begin each day with an empowering affirmation like, “Today is full of opportunities, and I am ready to embrace them.” Even if it feels awkward at first, your mind will start to believe it because repetition wires and codes it in. Don’t underestimate the power of gratitude –it’s like a daily reset for your mindset. Focusing on what’s good in your life trains your mind to notice and attract more of it. Remember, you have the power to update and change your thoughts and, in doing so, create a reality you truly love. Also, remember you were born naturally optimistic, and you can reactivate that. How important are habits in cultivating or impacting our outlook? Habits shape who we are, and they play a massive role in how we see the world. We make our habits, and then our habits make us. Setting yourself a simple daily practice, like starting your morning with a positive affirmation or taking a moment to acknowledge small wins and successes, can create a powerful ripple effect in all aspects of your life. The secret is consistency – it’s the things you do every day, not just occasionally, that shape your mindset and outlook on life. These small actions begin to rewire your mind, training it to focus on positivity and possibility. It takes just 21 days to form or break a habit, so set an intention to embrace positivity for those three weeks. You’ll be amazed at how your thoughts, mindset and even your reality begin to shift in remarkable ways.
Over time can someone be set to a negative outlook, and can this be fixed in one RTT session? Absolutely! Negativity often stems from deeply rooted beliefs formed in childhood or from past experiences. The incredible thing about Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) is how quickly it uncovers the root cause of those beliefs and then rewires and recodes the mind to move forward with more constructive habits of thought and action. In just one session, many people experience a profound shift – letting go of long-held patterns that have kept them stuck - and embracing a more positive outlook. The transformation can be completely life-changing, and it all starts with understanding the why behind that negativity.
For someone who has been through a lot of trauma, how can they help themselves out of a dark place to see there is a brighter future?
Healing begins with compassion for yourself. Acknowledge what you’ve been through and recognise that you are choosing not to be defined by it. RTT is powerful for releasing the grip of past trauma, but even on your own, you can take steps forward. Start by focusing on one small thing each day that brings you comfort or joy – a walk, a book, or even a conversation with a friend or family member.
Over time, these moments build hope and remind you of the positive aspects of your life. Remember, your mind believes what you tell it. Repeating, “I am strong, and my future is wonderful,” may seem simple and a little awkward to begin with, but over time can be profoundly transformative.
Do you believe in the power of visualisation and future self to cultivate a new reality via manifesting? Visualisation is one of the most powerful tools we have. When you vividly imagine your future self with crystal clear clarity – what you’ll achieve, how you’ll feel, and who you’ll become – you create a blueprint for your mind to follow. It’s the Law of Attraction/Assumption in action – you can literally ‘think’ your way into your desired reality. Manifestation isn’t just wishful thinking; it’s aligning your thoughts, words, images, and actions with your desires. The more you see yourself living your dream life, the more your subconscious mind will work to make it your reality.
Is this connected to our view of our identity or one of the core issues RTT fixes, such as ‘I am not enough’? The belief that “I am not enough” is one of the most common issues people face, and it affects every area of life – from relationships to career success. What is great about RTT is that it addresses the root cause of this thought and feeling – uncovering when and why this belief was formed, reframing it, and replacing it with new, empowering truths that help you to move forward. Once you believe you are enough, your entire outlook and sense of identity transforms. You start to see opportunities rather than obstacles, and that’s the foundation of optimism. What other hacks can we use to stay optimistic in tough times? There are so many simple but effective strategies you can use to stay optimistic, even when faced with challenges. Surround yourself with
“Once you believe you are enough, your entire outlook and sense of identity transforms. You start to see opportunities rather than obstacles, and that’s the foundation of optimism”
positivity – whether that’s uplifting music, inspiring podcasts, or people who lift your spirits. Practice gratitude daily, even for the smallest things, like a good cup of coffee or a beautiful sunset. Also, reframe challenges as opportunities to grow. Instead of thinking, “Why is this happening to me?” try, “What am I learning from this?” Your mind is incredibly powerful – it will believe whatever story you choose to tell it!
This is The Optimism Issue – what or who keeps you optimistic? My family keeps me optimistic, especially my new baby grandson, who brings me so much joy, reminds me of the beauty and possibilities in life, and shows me that babies are born believing they are enough and worthy of love. We can reactivate and regenerate the strong sense of self-worth that we are all born with. The message in my new book, coming out late this year, also keeps me optimistic. I also stay optimistic because I’ve witnessed the incredible power of human resilience and transformation. Time and time again, I’ve seen people unlock their potential and completely change their lives by shifting their mindset. Being able to guide and support them on that journey fills me with a profound sense of fulfillment and gratitude. Ultimately, optimism isn’t about denying life’s challenges; it’s about believing in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow and knowing we have the power to create it – and that belief is a gift we can give ourselves every single day.
BALANCING ACT
Dr. Mohsen Soofian, leading physician at Hortman Clinics shares how hormones can play a vital role in how we feel
Hormone Imbalance, Iodine, and selenium-rich foods if deficient are added to the diet. For Hyperthyroidism, Methimazole or propylthiouracil (PTU) is used to suppress thyroid activity. To lower cortisol, medications such as ketoconazole and metyrapone are used. The treatment varies on the issue and can be personalised as per each client’s requirements.
How do lifestyle factors like diet, stress, and exercise affect hormone levels? Of course, stress, diet, and sleep are so important. If these are not made optimal then your hormone levels will suffer. Stress management, good sleep, healthy food, minimising/eliminating alcohol will help greatly in keeping your body resilient and keep hormones at healthy levels.
WORDS: SARAH JOSEPH
Talk us through your background and how you became interested in wellness and anti-aging? I am an Osteopathic Physician with American Board Certification in Family Medicine. I have advanced training through the American Academy of Anti-Aging medicine through their Fellowship for Anti-Aging, Metabolic, and Functional Medicine and the Aesthetic Anti-Aging Fellowship. This reflects five state licenses (Alabama, California, Hawaii, Florida, and New York) and I have practiced all over the United States and established my clinic in Miami (The Renaissance Clinic). I have currently joined Hortman Clinics as their mindset and goal to bring elevated wellness and longevity to the UAE matched with my passion and professional goals. What are the main symptoms or signs that indicate the need for hormone testing? Hormone testing in women is typically indicated when there are symptoms or signs suggesting hormonal imbalances. These may involve reproductive, metabolic, or systemic functions. Here are some of the main symptoms and signs that warrant consideration for hormone testing: Irregular menstrual cycles, Amenorrhea (Absence of menstruation for more than three months), Heavy or prolonged periods, Infertility, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Hot flashes and night sweats, Mood changes, Sleep disturbances, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Unexplained weight changes. Hormone testing in men, on the other side, is typically indicated when symptoms or signs suggest hormonal imbalances affecting reproductive, metabolic, or systemic health. Below are the main symptoms and signs that may encourage hormone testing in men: Low testosterone (Hypogonadism), Physical changes (Decreased muscle mass and strength), Energy and Performance, Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function), Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Low cortisol (Adrenal Insufficiency), High cortisol, Cushing’s Syndrome), Estrogen imbalance, Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome, Prolactin imbalance, Fertility issues, Bone, and joint symptoms. If an imbalance is found, what treatment options are available? Different treatments are offered to patients according to their imbalances. For instance, Low Estrogen Imbalance is treated with Hormone Replacement Therapy, while High Estrogen Balance is corrected through lifestyle changes or Progesterone Therapy. With Thyroid
How important is physical fitness when it comes to balancing your hormones? This is everything. Physical fitness will improve your bodies resiliency and release optimal levels of hormones for men and women. Testosterone has been shown to increase dramatically after exercise, also increasing endorphins in the brain, so your stress is reduced, and you have a sense of well-being. There is no shortcut or avoiding it, physical fitness is necessary to maintain health. All the studies show, the more muscle you have and the more you exercise, the less risk of mental health issues, less risk of dying, and less cancer.
Are there natural or non-prescription approaches to balancing hormones? While natural supplements are available (such as LJ 100 for boosting testosterone), there is nothing that can replace the efficacy and treatment response we get from pharmaceutical interventions. All my patients on pharmaceutical hormones are very happy and love the treatment response they get and how tremendously it benefits their well-being. We need to understand that hormonal dysfunction is a consequence of aging, so while it is natural to experience a decline in hormones, we do not need to tolerate the decades of suffering and the symptoms that come with the aging process and suboptimal hormone levels. We can directly intervene to keep you feeling good, functioning well, and performing at your best every day. As a testament to this, I can proudly say that all my patients who started hormones have continued, and none have stopped.
“Physical fitness will improve your bodies resiliency and release optimal levels of hormones for men and women”
What are the common causes of hormone imbalances in women in the UAE? Hormone imbalances in both women and men can arise from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, environmental, and medical factors. In the UAE, specific cultural, environmental, and lifestyle influences may play a role. Below are the “common causes of hormone imbalances” in women and men, with a focus on factors prevalent in the UAE. In women, they include various elements such as lifestyle factors, dietary patterns, PCOS, stress, physical inactivity, Thyroid disorders, and other external factors such as Vitamin D deficiency and more can cause these imbalances. In men, various elements such as diet, stress, lack of sleep, Hypogonadism and environment factors such as pollution, toxins and vitamin D deficiency play a big role.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? I’m a big believer in stoicism, but a positive approach to it. Life happens. Life is 10 per cent of things that happens to us and 90 percent how we respond to them. “This too shall pass” is a very powerful concept, that we just accept what has happened and that it will move on, and we can work hard to overcome it. Losing hope is the biggest sin, because if you have accepted giving up, nothing can be done. The phrase: “It’s always darkest before dawn” is very true, because when times are bad and it may seem there is no way out, we need to count our blessings and find opportunity in every challenge that lies ahead.

PROTECT YOUR PEACE
How Dr. Saliha Afridi, Founder and Clinical Pyschologist at LightHouse Arabia, focuses on making a positive impact on the mental health of her community
Talk us through your background? I am a clinical psychologist and the founder of the LightHouse Arabia which is a community mental health center in Dubai since 2011. Over the past decade, my focus has notably shifted towards adult development and navigating the personal and processional transitions of midlife. I specialised in workplace and executive mental health, and also deep-seated expertise in parenting strategies and dynamics. My transition from the US to the UAE over 15 years ago marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to significantly enhance the mental health landscape of the region. In 2011, I founded The LightHouse Arabia, and under my leadership, it has evolved into one of the most influential mental health centers in the UAE and the region. Since its inception, I, alongside my dedicated team, has devoted thousands of volunteer hours to community education, focusing on the cultivation of mental health and wellness best practices. Can optimism influence physical health, and if so, how is it connected to mental well-being? Absolutely. Our mind and body are connected. Our thoughts can even impact something as biological as our gut microbiome, which is deeply connected to our mental health. Research has consistently shown that optimism can lower stress levels, decrease the cortisol levels in your body, and thus, reduce inflammation in the body. With a reduction of cortisol and inflammation you are impacting nearly every organ and system in the body such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, strengthening the immune system, which can even lead to increased longevity. A positive mental outlook also
encourages healthier habits, such as exercise, better nutrition, and improved sleep, all of which impact physical health. What role does therapy or professional support play in helping someone develop optimism? Working with a psychologist can be very helpful to develop optimism for a few reasons. Sometimes we don’t even know we are being negative and having our thoughts and feelings reflected back to us can make us more aware of how deep the beliefs that fuel the negativity might be. Learning skills such as techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy which makes you aware of your mental models, cognitivie distortions as well as teach you skills of reframing, thought journaling, and thought stopping will help you challenge your negative thoughts and develop healthier more balanced ways of approaching life. Therapy also provides tools to process traumas and other difficult life experiences, which can help heal parts of you that might be holding on to a negative outlook as a way of surviving. By working through these experiences, therapy allows you to release old patterns of thinking and coping that may no longer serve you. It helps you identify the origins of these beliefs, reframe your perspective, and build healthier, more adaptive ways of approaching life’s challenges.
Can social connections and community engagement enhance a strong mindset? Research shows that there is a significant relationship between loneliness and pessimism, with loneliness often leading to a more negative outlook on life. A study involving 260 undergraduate students found that higher levels of loneliness were associated with increased pessimism and decreased optimism.
Social connections help us feel more well resourced and that helps us feel stronger. Social connections help us feel more well-resourced, both emotionally and mentally, which in turn strengthens our ability to cope with challenges. When we feel connected, supported, and understood, we are reminded that we don’t have to face life’s difficulties alone. This sense of belonging and shared experience provides a buffer against stress and reduces feelings of isolation. Simply put, relationships serve as a source of strength, helping us feel grounded, supported, and better equipped to navigate life. With the fast-paced culture, are there specific tools or techniques to manage stress, anxiety, or burnout effectively? One of the most important things we can do to manage stress, anxiety, and burnout is to remember that we are human. There is no quick fix. We live in a world that is fast-paced and machine-like, but we are not machines. Our human bodies have evolved over thousands of years to thrive through simple, natural rhythms: moving, eating, sleeping, connecting. Our internal clock was once set by the sun, not a screen, and we existed in constant relationship with nature and our tribe/community. When you feel overwhelmed, burnt out, or unwell, instead of looking for quick fixes, pause and ask yourself: How can I return to my natural rhythms? Are you getting enough sleep to restore your body and mind? Are you moving in ways that release tension and energy? Are you eating nourishing foods that fuel and heal? Are you connecting with others, or do you feel isolated? When was the last time you stepped outside, grounded yourself in nature, and slowed your pace? Our modern world may demand speed, but our bodies and souls still crave what we have always needed: rest, movement, nourishment, and connection. By returning to these essentials, we honour our humanity and reclaim balance, calm, and well-being. How can people set boundaries to protect their mental health without feeling guilt? It would be important for people to understand why they feel guilty when they set boundaries. It is too easy to say “just say no” or “have good boundaries” but there is a lot of cultural conditioning, especially for women, who are taught to say yes, extend themselves, sacrifice for the sake of relationship and be complaint. Saying no could go against everything you have been taught about what it means to be good and kind and can feel like a betrayal of this identity. For people who value relationships, this can trigger deep-seated fears of abandonment or not being loved. So before you say no, I would encourage people to reflect on: What does saying no mean to me? Identify the fears or beliefs that surface when you set boundaries. Also, explore where these beliefs come from – family messages, cultural norms, or personal experiences. If you are just saying yes without consideration for yourself then you will eventually burnout or engage in unhhealthy relational patterns. Boundaries are a form of self-respect and self-consideration. While, there will also be times where you will sacrifice your own needs to show up for a relationship and if that is done consciously you won’t be resentful than if you are doing it unconsciously. How can technology, like apps or virtual therapy, help improve mental health access? I am personally a big fan of in-person, nervous system to nervous system interaction in therapy, and usuing virtual apps and virtual therapy as an adjunt for inperson therapy. I think apps and virtual therapy are a great way to increase accessibility and the apps are a great way to provide out of the therapy hour support. Virtual therapy has made support more accessible for individuals who face barriers such as distance, stigma, or time constraints. Are there specific habits or routines that foster a positive mental attitude? I think it is really important to differentiate between positivity and realisitic optimism. Realistic optimism is a
well-researched concept in psychology and refers to the ability to maintain a hopeful and positive outlook while being grounded in reality. It is often seen as a middle ground between blind optimism (unrealistic positivity that ignores challenges) and pessimism (a focus on negative outcomes).I think positivity when disconnected from reality can be naïve and detrimental to people’s well-being. But doing a proper assessment of the situation, seeing the pros and cons, being aware of the challenges and obstacles paired with proactive planning in how you will address it is important. Realistic optimists acknowledge problems but believe in their ability to overcome them through action, effort, and adaptability. There are some specific habits one can engaeg in to foster the PMA: Do a gratitude journal and let your heart fill with gratitude. Gratitude is a great way to fill your cup and the best part is that you don’t have to do anything other than name the things you appreciate about your life in this moment. Memorise ‘wow’ moments throughout the day. There are many times a day where we experience something that is ‘wow’ or comforting or soothing. Take 20 seconds and memorise that moment. The thing with our minds is that its teflon for positive moments and velcro for negative moments – that’s because remembering the negative things is linked to our survival. So we really have to go out of our way to remember the wow moments throughout the day. For example, if the weather is amazing, spend 20 seconds, taking in five deep breaths to remember how good it feels to have such amazing weather. Don’t compromise on the non-negotiables when it comes to caring for your body – sleep, nourishment, and movement. It won’t matter how positive you are if you are underrested, undernourished, and not getting sufficient movement it will take a whole lot more energy and willpower to stay positive.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? For me, faith is central to how I navigate life and faith in inherently optimistic- faith that everything that is happening to me is for me. I do not deny the feelings that come with difficult experiences – the grief or sadness, overwhelm – but all the while there is something inside of me that holds me up and says to trust in the greater process, even when this moment or the path ahead is difficult. This perspective allows me to face life’s uncertainties with openness, knowing that every moment is part of a larger journey toward becoming more of me, more whole, and more true to myself. Faith doesn’t remove the discomfort, but it reminds me that the discomfort is temporary and transformative, like a refining fire. It’s a way of anchoring myself to the belief that when difficulties arise something more is being asked of me.

PRECISION & SCALE
How Michele Barclay, founder of Browz, consistently stays ahead of the curve in the beauty industry
What inspired you to launch BROWZ?
After frequent visits to the Middle East, I fell in love with the region and had a burning desire to bring my brow expertise here, which I did in 2005. It was over ten years later in 2016, with the inspiration and help of my daughter Yasmin, who to this day remains my greatest teacher – that the BROWZ journey began. We saw a gap in the market for custom brow design in an environment where people could put their trust in the process and get their desired shape consistently. At the time, brow services were often offered as add-ons to other treatments like blow-dries or nail services. While this met the need for basic brow grooming, I knew that bringing a specialized, bespoke brow design concept to the region would be a game-changer. As we know, beautifully groomed brows can dramatically enhance and radiate the face. It was a risk to invest fully in a business focused solely on eyebrows, but I was confident it was needed. Using the Silva method, I was able to clearly visualise the BROWZ concept and knew it would fill an important gap in the market.
How do you ensure the quality and precision of your services? Ensuring the highest quality and precision in our services is a top priority at BROWZ. We achieve this through a multi-faceted approach centered on building an exceptional team fully aligned with our companyʼs vision and values. As a therapist myself and now a business owner, I deeply understand the importance of doing the inner work and the complexities involved in delivering consistently flawless results. Thatʼs why we invest heavily in sourcing, training, and mentoring the talented therapists who work with us. Our rigorous training programme, combined with ongoing mentorship and support, equips our team with the skills and expertise to exceed client expectations and stand out in a market that already houses many exceptionally successful beauty and aesthetic brands. We have also implemented robust quality control measures. This includes regular training, mystery shopping, weekly audits, and participation in external seminars to keep our knowledge and techniques at the cutting edge. We are constantly raising the bar, always striving to set new benchmarks for ourselves. When it comes to maintenance, what are your best tips for this? Maintenance is all
“Challenges
are opportunities to grow and do the inner work”
about your daily practices and rituals. We recommend using a nourishing brow gel after brow lamination. This helps lock the lamination in place while keeping the hairs healthy and hydrated. Scheduling a monthly HD Brow treatment is another maintenance ritual to help keep your brows looking defined. Protecting Semi Permanent Brows from UV exposure and scheduling an annual top-up appointment to refresh the pigment. All our clients receive bespoke maintenance suggestions so they can maximise the longevity and transformative results of their treatments. Are there any unique techniques or innovations BROWZ has introduced? While BROWZ is renowned for our exceptional brow services, weʼve expanded our offerings. In 2022/2023, we strategically moved into the injectable and laser facial treatment market, driven by the evolving needs of our loyal client base. Weʼve also pioneered the use of cutting-edge technologies in our ser-
vices. Our state-of-the-art laser treatments utilise the latest advancements for precise, targeted outcomes. And our specialised injectable techniques achieve a truly natural, balanced enhancement of features. What advice would you give to someone interested in starting their own business in the beauty industry? The most important advice I can give is to focus on yourself and do the inner work. Believe in your own magic and vision. I would also strongly urge anyone starting a beauty business to work with an experienced business coach. They can help you identify and work through any limiting beliefs that may be holding you back. Above all, cultivate a steely determination to bring your unique vision to life. Know your “why” – the deeper purpose that drives you. This will fuel your passion and keep you motivated, even in the face of challenges. Tell us about your own beauty routine and why it’s important to maintain this? As a
beauty business owner, maintaining a consistent self-care routine is essential for me. My non-negotiable daily practices include a five-minute morning ice bath in my home to rewire my thoughts and maintain mental clarity, as well as a Pilates reformer workout to energise my body. These rituals keep me sharp, empowered and operating at my best. BROWZ II is officially launching, what lies ahead for the brand? We move and flow with the time that we are in – always remembering where we started, we remain aware of what we have achieved, conscious about nurturing where we are and motivated to focus on how we can continue to improve all the details.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? Challenges are opportunities to grow and do the inner work. I ask myself “What can I learn here?” As my most trusted mentor Louise Hay says, “What is it I need to know?”

Founders of SYNKRO, Brittany Small and Mimi Sawedeg, discuss energy, vision and the importance of timing when it comes to launching a business
WORDS: AMY SESSIONS
What do the first 30 minutes of you day look like, your morning routine? Our morning routines are our sacred time to set the tone for the rest of the day. Not all mornings start the same but we both aim to connect with ourselves mentally and physically whether it’s through meditation or movement.
What was the vision from the outset for SYNKRO and how did your previous roles support your ability to do this? The vision for SYNKRO came from our deep passion for movement and connection to the body. Our inspirations derive from Pilates, dance, yoga and strength training drawing over 10 years of experiences in these practices. We started with just creating a class that had a unique style of movement, but we evolved the idea to build a safe space for women to step away from the noise of the outside world and truly connect with themselves. The goal was to develop a method that fosters a dialogue with the body that encourages full presence and mindfulness in every movement. How did you know it was the right time to launch and how did you decide to partner together? The decision to launch SYNKRO was deeply intuitive, we knew the time was right and we were ready to take the leap. We share a unified vision, built on mutual trust and respect, with complementary strengths that make us a great team. When we met six years ago, we were in very different stages of our lives. While we always aspired to collaborate, the timing never aligned. As we’ve grown and evolved, so have our goals and passions. We truly believe in divine timing, and now is the moment for us to channel our experience, vision, and purpose into making a meaningful impact in the wellness space. What is the DNA of SYNKRO and have these evolved over time? The DNA of SYNKRO is rooted in inspiring positive change and empowering women to feel confident and connected to themselves. Our mission is to build a community of strong, empowered women, creating a space that is free of judgment – a place where everyone can be authentic, feel supported, and enjoy the journey. While our core values remain constant, our approach evolves to meet the needs of our community, always ensuring we deliver an experience that uplifts and inspires. Did you always know you would launch your own brand, or has it evolved organically? We are both entrepreneurs with experience in many different industries – the health and wellness field has always been the constant in our lives and careers. Launching a brand
like SYNKRO felt like a natural progression. This vision has always been in our hearts, and while we’ve had conversations about creating something together in the past, the timing was never quite right. Now, everything has aligned – we felt ready to share our energy and purpose, and to show our community the meaningful difference we’re here to make. SYNKRO represents the culmination of our passion, experience, and shared vision for inspiring change and connection. What has been the biggest challenge since launching to date? The biggest challenge we've faced since launching has been learning to trust ourselves fully and step into the unknown. Leaving behind the security of established routines and structures from our previous work lives to pursue a shared dream required both courage and a leap of faith. It’s been a journey of embracing uncertainty and finding confidence in our passion and vision together.
What has been the biggest reward? Our biggest reward has been the impact that we have made on others and ourselves – hearing the feedback about the practice and how it has helped so many of our members in their personal lives both in their bodies and mindset. We have also changed since building this community, we feel deeply connect-
that keeps us grounded, inspired, and connected, allowing us to see opportunities and possibilities with fresh clarity.
What daily practices do you undertake to ensure you stay in your best energy? To stay in our best energy, we prioritise positive selftalk, which helps us remain grounded and aligned with our intentions. Daily movement is essential for us, whether it’s a short walk or practicing our method – we listen to our bodies and choose what feels right each day. Additionally, we incorporate breathwork to keep ourselves centered and in tune, fostering balance in both mind and body. It is also really important for us to be around others that are on the same frequency which helps us feel recharged.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own brand or business?
Our advice is to find something that sets your soul on fire – something rooted in a clear mission and purpose. When you create from the heart, it will always bring a sense of fulfilment, no matter the outcome. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s too hard or that you can’t do it. We truly believe in chasing your dreams, taking risks, and trusting in yourself. It’s not always easy, but if you don’t try, you’ll never discover what’s waiting for you on the other side. Believe in your vision,
“Believe in your vision, take that leap, and trust the process – you are capable of so much more than you know”
ed to ourselves and others and it has been such a gratifying experience.
Who has inspired you in terms of business and life, and why? We draw inspiration from each other in countless ways. In areas where one of us may feel weaker, the other brings strength, and this balance is what truly unites our partnership. Both personally and professionally, we continuously motivate one another, pushing each other to grow and evolve. Our mutual support and complementary strengths are at the core of what drives us forward, both in business and in life
Do you believe in visualisation and how has it impacted our life? We absolutely believe in visualisation. Having a clear vision of the future and how you want it to unfold can truly transform your life. Even during times when it felt impossible, we learned to surrender and trust in what’s yet to come. We have embraced what we call “intention walks,” where we focus on our purpose, our mission, and the community we’re building. During these walks, we talk about our dreams, express gratitude, and align ourselves with a higher vibrational frequency. It’s a practice
take that leap, and trust the process – you are capable of so much more than you know. This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay optimistic and which tools/ apps / platforms do you use? Optimism, to us, is a mindset – a choice to focus on what we create within ourselves. We take it day by day. Some days are filled with positivity and flow, while others require more intention. On those tougher days, we remind ourselves to be kind, to focus on what’s going well, and to give ourselves credit for the progress we’ve made. We allow ourselves to feel everything that needs to be felt because that’s part of the journey too. SYNKRO classes are our sanctuary –a moving meditation where the mind and body are fully present in the moment. We believe in the power of prayer in whichever form it may be and that’s different for everyone. Find the time to sit, connect with your higher power and open your heart. We also find inspiration and grounding through the teachings of Abraham Hicks and Joe Dispenza, which help us reconnect with purpose and possibility. It’s all about staying aligned with what truly feels good.

THE GUT –HAIR CONNECTION
In a world that idolizes quick fixes – think miracle serums, salon treatments, and the trendiest superfood mask – it’s easy to overlook the most essential aspect of beauty: our inner health. The secret to luminous, strong, and glossy hair doesn’t lie in your vanity kit alone. Instead, it begins deep within – right in your gut. Imagine your gut as the soil of a flourishing garden. Neglect the soil, and no amount of effort will yield thriving blooms. Your hair, like those blooms, reflects your inner vitality. Vitamins, minerals, and nutrients essential for hair health are processed in the gut. An imbalanced gut can disrupt this flow, leading to brittle strands, dullness, or even hair loss. But don’t despair – there’s a way to nurture both your gut and your hair. By blending ancestral wisdom with modern practices, you can unlock a beauty secret that’s as old as time and as relevant as ever.
ANCIENT WISDOM WITH MODERN SCIENCE: THE PERFECT BLEND
For centuries, our ancestors harnessed the healing power of nature. They sipped nutrient-rich broths, used time-honored oils, and adhered to mindful rituals that celebrated the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. Today, modern science validates these traditions, showing us how gut health is intimately linked to hair vitality. If you’re in the UAE and tired of hearing, “It’s just the water here” (hint: a filter helps but won’t perform miracles), this is for you. Let’s explore a stepby-step guide to reclaiming radiant hair with remedies rooted in tradition and adapted for our fast-paced lives.
GUT HEALTH: THE INNER SECRET TO HEALTHY HAIR
Strong, shiny hair begins in the gut – the control center for nutrient absorption and overall wellness. Your gut microbiome ensures that nutrients like biotin, zinc, vitamin D, and collagen are effectively absorbed to fuel hair growth. When gut health falters, deficiencies arise, manifesting as thinning, dryness and breakage. Here’s how to start healing from within: 1. Matcha: Start your day with ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha, a powerhouse of antioxidants that soothe inflammation (a main reason for hair fall) and energise digestion (direct impact on the hair strength). Pair it with seven minutes of silence and mindfulness as you sip to set the tone for the day.
The L-theanine, a unique amino acid in matcha, plays a crucial role in reducing stress by promoting alpha brainwave activity, which fosters a state of relaxed alertness. This stress-reducing effect indirectly benefits gut health since chronic stress is a known disruptor of gut microbiota and can lead to digestive issues like inflammation or leaky gut syndrome.
Furthermore, matcha’s catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have potent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These properties help maintain a healthy gut microbiome by supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria while inhibiting harmful pathogens. A well-balanced microbiome contributes to overall nutrient absorption, which indirectly supports hair health by ensuring the delivery of essential nutrients like amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to hair follicles. Matcha also contains a moderate amount of caffeine, which enhances circulation and improved blood flow
and delivers more nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles, promoting hair growth and strength. I’m telling you ladies, not one excuse to not Catch a Matcha in the day instead of a cup of coffee. It tastes so good whether cold or hot – as a Latte or a matcha shot. Go to your Instagram and type @catcha_matcha to learn how to make your very own at home!
2. Broth Lab: Sip on The Broth Lab’s delicious grass-fed and freerange 15-hour long simmered bone broth mid-morning. A timehonored remedy, it repairs gut lining and strengthens hair from the inside out. A cup of grass-fed bone broth provides collagen and amino acids for gut lining repair and hair strength. Bone broth is a nutrient-dense – a powerhouse of collagen, amino acids like proline and glycine, and minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and calcium, amongst many other nutrients of which all support gut and hair health. The amino acid called Proline particularly plays a vital role in the synthesis of collagen and elastin, which are crucial for maintaining the integrity of gut lining and skin tissue. A healthy gut lining prevents the leakage of toxins into the bloodstream, a condition known as leaky gut, which can trigger systemic inflammation which directly impacts hair health.
Glycine, another abundant amino acid in bone broth, has anti-inflammatory and calming effects on the body. It supports the production of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress. By reducing inflammation and oxidative damage, glycine helps create an environment conducive to healthy hair growth. The way The Broth Lab is created allows it to be rich in glutamine, an amino acid that fuels the cells lining the gut. Glutamine is essential for maintaining the integrity of the gut barrier and aiding in the repair of damaged intestinal walls. A robust gut barrier ensures efficient nutrient absorption, which is critical for delivering key nutrients like biotin, zinc, and amino acids to hair follicles. A single cup of The Broth Lab broth provides amino acids and tackles the deficiencies we women especially suffer from due to our cycle. Those nutrients that are in abundance in broth are crucial for hair thickening – a centuries-old practice now backed by research and science.
∙ Modern Twist: I personally love the brush by ‘Hams’ it has an easy grip that is incredibly gentle but effective in promoting blood flow and detangle without damage. Most importantly, it evenly distributes your hair’s natural oils, leaving it instantly shinier and healthier looking. The first step to a healthy hair routine is choosing the right brush. Brushing with mindfulness is an ancient practice and the very first step towards hair vitality.
2. Scalp Love: Massages for Growth and Balance
∙ Ancient Ritual: Scalp massage has roots in Ayurvedic practices, where oil massages (often with herbs like rosemary and neem) were used to promote circulation, balance the doshas, and stimulate hair growth.
∙ Modern Twist: Apothecary Mamta’s The Hair Elixir infused with rosemary, vitamin E, and lightweight coconut oil works as a nourishing treatment, adding a spiritual touch by using ingredients passed down through generations. This ritual deeply nourishes the scalp, balancing energy and promoting healthy hair. I like to be generous and let it soak in for 20 minutes in the bathroom as the water runs as I flick through my favourite Emirates Women magazine.
3. The Sacred Wash: Shampoo as a Sacred Cleansing Ritual
∙ Ancient Ritual: In ancient Egypt and up until today in the Gulf region women would use essential oils and herbs to cleanse their hair, with henna and desert rose being popular choices for both cleansing and beautifying.
“It’s a conscious daily decision to care for your gut health for hair vitality and understanding that they are deeply interlinked”
∙ Modern Twist: Treating shampooing as a skincare ritual is a nod to those practices. The Black Baccara Fresh Rose Stem Cell range by Miriam Quevedo from Barcelona offers both nourishment and a rich scent, connecting the body and mind to a state of balance. They also offer a fresh rose stem cells hair scrub, as a pre-step if you have had any styling products before shampooing. My hair requires it once a week as a scalp detoxifier but on days that I style it more often, I would use it twice a week. The range Optimizes Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) and balances microflora for superior hydration and improved scalp health by preventing hair growth disturbances caused by our harsh environment.
When incorporating these superfoods together into your diet, they offer numerous synergistic benefits for gut and hair health. Matcha’s stress-reducing properties complement bone broth’s guthealing capabilities, addressing two major contributors to poor gut health: stress and inflammation. Together, they ensure optimal nutrient absorption and reduce systemic inflammation, creating a strong foundation for healthy hair growth that is sustainable long-term!
TRANSFORM HAIRCARE INTO A HOLISTIC RITUAL: CONSISTENCY IS KEY
True hair care is more than just choosing the right products – it’s about creating mindful rituals that embrace your hair’s natural beauty. By integrating ancient rituals into your modern hair care routine, you create a mindful and holistic experience. The following steps not only will transform drastically your hair if implemented properly but will also allow you to foster a deeper connection with your own well-being.
1. The Gentle Start: Brush with Intent
∙ Ancient Ritual: In many cultures, hair brushing was considered a sacred act that not only detangled the hair but also helped balance energy. Emirati Bedouins have long embraced thick, long and lush hair and have always used special soft combs to brush their hair to connect to mother earth.
4. Rinsing with Heritage: Fermented Rice Water
∙ Ancient Ritual: Rice water has been used for centuries in Asian cultures like Japan and China to promote long, strong, and shiny hair. The fermented rice water, rich in amino acids, works to strengthen the hair shaft and improve elasticity.
∙ Modern Twist: Soak organic rice overnight – pour out the water into a bottle. You may use rice to cook and eat – nothing is to waste. Use the rice water to rinse your hair as a final step after conditioning to restore nourishment, giving your hair the perfect shine.
5. Hydration and Nourishment: Sublime Gold Ritual
∙ Ancient Ritual: In ancient civilizations, like Morrocco, Lebanon, Palestine (and other countries in the Levant region), precious oils like olive oil and argan oil were used to nourish hair and skin, often believed to be the reason of their youth
∙ Modern Twist: I swear by the Sublime Gold, infused with the exclusive Bioactive 24k Gold by the famous Miriam Quevado. I place two pipettes in my hand, take a deep breath and with the tips of my hands glide the product on my décolleté up to my neck and glide through my bottom of my hair, the beautiful mix of nourishing oils; argan oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil eaves my hair shinny but also leaves me with a polished look.
6. Herbal Steam Treatments: Purification and Detox
∙ Ancient Ritual: Turks in the old days often used steam treatments
regularly stock her jars in my fridge as condiments with all my meals. We had a workshop recently together at The Roost Rotisserie where we showcased how the gut-hair axis reveals the deep connection between gut health and hair vitality, with the microbiome playing a key role in nutrient absorption, inflammation control, and hormone balance – all essential for healthy hair. Feed your gut soldiers and they will repay you with good hair follicles.
2. Hormonal Balancing Broth: The vegan Umami broth by The Broth Lab is another probiotic rich source which is perfect for bedtime. I like warming a cup whilst reading or Netflix-ing – a hug in a cup. Rich in iodine (a main requirement for thyroid health) and high in probiotics from the fermented white miso and a lot of plant protein and medicinal properties from the shiitake mushroom. An elixir that is both healing, soothing and great for hormonal balance – a key for healthy locks!
with herbs like eucalyptus, thyme, and rosemary to open pores, cleanse the scalp, and rejuvenate the hair.
∙ Modern Twist: Using a herbal steam treatment once a month can deeply cleanse your scalp, opening up follicles and allowing nutrients to penetrate more effectively. It not the same at home, so I personally book myself to a special hair herbal bath at Layers by Leila Salon, its located in Jumeira 1, Dubai, ask for the therapist Layla herself, she is the co-owner of the salon and an expert in this field – thank me later!
Not only will your hair feel soft, nourished for days – it will smell like a bouquet. It is always hard for me to wash my hair after doing this therapy, I miss how my hair smells and usually book it regulary.
7. The Oil Lock Blend: Radiance
∙ Ancient Ritual: Aromatherapy and the use of oils for relaxation and spiritual connection date back to ancient Egypt and beyond that we mentioned earlier how rose and gold have always been a staple for glow and nourishment used in both hair and skincare.
∙ Modern Twist: I personally love incorporating a little bit of my skin routine into my hair care ritual. A few drops of 111Skin rose Gold Radiance Booster that I usually add to my moisturizer – I separately massage three droplets into my scalp massage or mix into my leave-in treatment. This thing knows radiance indeed.
8. Night Care: Restorative Rituals
∙ Ancient Ritual: In ancient India, before going to sleep, women would often apply nourishing oils to their hair and wrap it in a silk or cotton cloth to protect it and allow the oils to work overnight.
∙ Modern Twist: I know how impractical this may be given we rarely have time to wash and style our hair in the morning before we bash out the house. An alternative would be to consider spraying the energy clearing spray and pillow mist by Apothecary Mamta before bed, then gently wrapping your hair in a silk scarf or bonnet to lock in moisture and prevent damage during sleep. It is phenomenal what this small tip can do for your hair the next morning.
9. Gratitude and Mindfulness: Closing the Ritual
∙ Ancient Ritual: In many cultures, the act of grooming was accompanied by moments of reflection, gratitude, or prayer. In Japan, the tradition of "Kintsugi" (the art of repairing broken pottery with gold) was a reminder to honour imperfections.
∙ Modern Twist: At the end of your routine, take a moment to reflect on the nourishing process you’ve just engaged in. Feel gratitude for your hair’s natural beauty, your body’s self-care, and the energy that flows through you. Your hair is energy and feeds from your thoughts. Good thoughts = good vibes = good hair.
LIFESTYLE PRACTICES FOR RADIANT HAIR AND A HEALTHY GUT
Your hair and gut health aren’t separate entities, they’re deeply intertwined. Incorporate these lifestyle changes for a complete transformation:
1. Fermented Foods: Probiotic-rich foods like kimchi and homemade kefir balance your microbiome, enhancing nutrient absorption. UAE-based fermentista Dr. Tejas offers an incredible range of Ayurvedic-inspired fermented products that I personally swear by. I
3. Mindful Movement: Exercise promotes gut microbiome diversity and reduces stress – a key factor in hair health. Wellness communities like Ossalmadxb are fantastic for motivation and camaraderie. Ask for Salma, the trainer – she is more than a fitness coach and can help you maintain a healthier lifestyle.
4. Targeted Supplements: Clean and bio-available supplements like Cymbiotika address nutrient deficiencies. I always recommend a CBC (Complete Blood Count) blood test in my practice to understand which deficiencies must be addressed. The most ones I see with women with thin hair is Iron and Zinc. The Bone Marrow broth by The Broth Lab is high in Iron and I would complement it with Cymbiotika’s fantastic zinc complex daily which is a zinc-copper combo. I follow this protocol every time I am on my menstrual cycle as we women lose a lot of blood during that week and will need to boost our reserves.
BIOHACKING MEETS ANCESTRAL PRACTICES
I am all for technology to speed up results, so I combine cutting-edge tools with ancient rituals. One of them is the Ultra-red therapy caps from Restore Fitness enhance scalp blood flow, ask for Dr Elie at their branch at Sunset mall and thank me later. I wear the Ultra-Red Therapy every night while I apply my magnesium spray oil before bed and as I sip on my broth from The Broth Lab – have I mentioned I am a multi-tasker? What about the other two – magnesium oil spray and some broth lab broth? Because I need my hair beauty sleep – yes sleep affects the skin, scalp and even the hair! They help me unwind and get more REM and deep sleep. How would you know if you got enough deep sleep? By tracking. I wear the Ultrahuman ring every single night. They’ve revolutionized my understanding of sleep and recovery. I swear I know I’m having a bad hair day if I didn’t get my 7-8 hours in of which 50 per cent must be deep/REM versus light.
FROM GUT TO GORGEOUS HAIR: YOUR HAIR AS A REFLECTION OF YOUR GUT HEALTH
By reviving ancestral wisdom and integrating modern science, you can create a comprehensive routine that nourishes your body and hair. From sipping on Matcha and The Broth Lab’s broth to indulging in ancient oil blend mixtures, these rituals celebrate the synergy between inner health and outward beauty. However, the true path to luscious, envy-worthy hair is more than a beauty routine; it’s a conscious daily decision to care for your gut health for hair vitality and understanding that they are deeply interlinked.
By healing my leaky gut nine years ago and experimenting like a Guine pig with numerous brands until I found the cleanest, most effective and ones that truly transformed my hair. Take it from someone who’s walked this path: the transformation is worth it. My journey to healing my gut has brought me not only compliments on my hair but a renewed sense of vitality. And trust me, once you see the changes, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner.
Let your hair be the crown of your wellness journey, shining with the brilliance of a healthy, nourished life.

AM TO PM BEAUTY
Jewellery designer and founder of Yuniu Jewels, Dalia Kombarji, shares her morning to evening beauty routine
Talk us through your morning routine. My morning routine is pretty simple yet effective. I start by washing my face with the Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser, which I absolutely love. It’s gentle and refreshing. Then, I apply the UV PLUS Anti-Pollution Translucent to protect my skin from the day ahead. It’s a quick routine, but it keeps my skin feeling clean and protected for the busy day. How does our evening routine differ? For my evening routine, I start by washing my face with the same Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser. Then, I apply the Parsley
Seed Anti-Oxidant Intense Serum. I also discovered a new skincare brand called Ashri, which is made in Korea, at an event, and I've been hooked ever since. After the serum, I use the Ultra Radiance All-inOne Brightening Complex to finish off my routine. It’s really effective for keeping my skin healthy and glowing.
What are your go-to skincare products? My go-to skincare products are definitely the Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser, Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Intense Serum, and Ultra Radiance All-in-One Brightening Com-
plex. But throughout the day, I also keep reapplying the Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ from Ashri – it’s become a must-have for me. It’s so smooth and really protects my skin from the sun, so I can’t live without it anymore! Are you a fan of masks? I'm not really a fan of masks as part of my daily routine, but I do enjoy trying different ones every now and then. It’s a seamless way to mix things up and see what works for my skin.
How would you describe your approach to makeup? My relationship with makeup is all about creativity. I love experimenting
with different looks, and I feel like I apply it really well, though I don’t wear it every day. For me, it’s a way to enhance my look and express my mood or style for the day. But overall, I’m more into skincare keeping my skin healthy is my priority.
What can always be found in your makeup bag? The one thing that can always be found in my makeup bag is lip liner. It’s a must-have for me to define my lips and give them a polished look, even on days when I keep it simple. Which fragrance are you loveing at the moment? At the moment, I’m loving Loewe
Esencia. It’s a beautiful fragrance that feels fresh yet deep, with a perfect balance of warmth and elegance. It’s definitely one of my go-to scents right now.
How do you choose your evening fragrance?
I choose my evening fragrance based on the mood I want to set for the night. Right now, my favourite is Lucky by Dior. It’s just the right mix of freshness and sweetness, making it perfect for nights out.
Talk us through your hair routine. My hair routine is really important to me, and I’ve tried many different shampoos. Right now, I al-
ternate between Inecto Argan shampoo and Horsetail shampoo. After washing my hair, I use a garlic serum by Vatika, which has been great for my hair. For the tips, I use Garnier Ultra Doux Honey Treasures Repairing Serum for Damaged Hair and Split Ends, which also has heat protection. This routine keeps my hair looking healthy and shiny. What is the most unusual item in your makeup bag? The most unusual item in my makeup bag is probably a chocolate bar! I always keep one with me for a little treat whenever I need it.

How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? Positivity is all about approach problems with a solutionoriented mindset. Ever since a young age, I’ve learned that 20 per cent is the problem and 80 per cent is how you deal with it. It’s very easy to complain and argue over things
that don’t work, however, it takes a strong mind to focus on how to fix things and act upon them quickly, all with a smile. What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? I never gave too much importance to this before, and now I’ve realised it’s everything. Whether it’s a spa treatment or taking an hour a day to workout, they all play a big role in setting that reset button. It’s all about listening to your body and knowing when to give yourself the love it deserves. Who inspires you and why? I’ve started taking inspiration from everyone around me. I think no one is perfect, however, everyone in my life has certain inspiring qualities, and the more I value them for that, I can start to learn from everyone around, whom I interact on a daily basis with. What are your manifestations for 2025? To live a fit life that focusses on health and wellness. I also want to spend more time with my loved ones, as at the end of the day, it’s all about healthy relationships. This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? I’ve found journaling to be a powerful tool. When I make a list of things I’m grateful about and count my blessings, there’s great victory in reflecting everything we have in life and moving forward to attract more positvity. I also enjoy taking a step back and going for a meditation class to ground my thoughts and realise no problem is too big as mindset is everything. It’s important to be resilient and tough, as good things only come to those focus on what they have in life, rather than not have.

How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? Calmness is my super power and it allows me to step out of the problem and find solutions. Being positive is a state of trust that even when things may seem to not go your way, eventually, it will work out in your favour. Any inconvenience you experience, you choose to respond meaningfully.
What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? Brain dumping, writing or journaling has helped me keep a positive mindset to remind me of what I already have and to keep on working on myself and notice the patterns to be the best version for others. Taking time each week to jot down and acknowledge all the things that I’m grateful for (small or big) as well as the things that did not work out or have drained my energy so I know what to avoid. Who inspires you and why? I’m inspired by
people with ambition – not everyone has it and not everyone can start building on their dreams and have the consistency to keep learning. I’m inspired by those who lead with empathy and authenticity – following through their words with actions. As well as those who are quietly doing the work and upgrading their life.
What are your manifestations for 2025? Stability, peace of mind, good health, and love all around for 2025.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? Surround yourself with the right mix of people who know you and believe in you. Setting boundaries and having the power to walk away from things that drain your energy and are not serving you positively. For an instant mood boost, I have a go-to playlist of my favourite songs!

What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? Self-care helps me maintain a positive mindset because it reminds me that I am my most important priority and helps me get rid of things that aren’t helping me be the best version of myself.
Who inspires you and why? I wouldn’t say one single person inspires me. My inspirations keep changing. Recently I’ve been wanting to get into long-distance running so anyone I follow online or know who has been able to do that has been my inspiration.
What are your manifestations for 2025? Travel a couple countries, attend a couple concerts. Have the discipline to stick to my goals and most of all be happy spending time with myself.

Bryony Deery
FOUNDER OF PILATES BY BRYONY
How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? When I think of positivity, I think of a healthy constructive mindset and outlook on life. I really think the brain is a muscle we can train like our bodies and training yourself to think positively might not come naturally to some and takes daily work and consistency – just like your workouts. For me feeling thankful and feeling as present as possible during the small daily moments of joy helps alot. Whether it’s my daily matcha, calling my mum for a catch up or walking my dog. For me, it’s a feeling of calm that I notice all throughout the different areas of my life, that to me is a positive and happy life. What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? Self-care in this sense is daily work and habits that set you up for success and for me thats breathwork, meditation or a soundbath on my app and movement. For me, Pilates is such an all-inone because you get such incredible results physically, but it’s such a mindful practice because you are so in your body that your mind is free. Journaling is also a practice that I find such an incredible tool when it comes to creating a positive mindset. Who inspires you and why? So many people. I am lucky to have such an incredible mum, she has been through so many challenges and is the strongest, kindest and most resilient person I know. I also have incredible women around me that inspire me everyday, we all really lean on each other and have such solid friendships it makes such a difference to have that strong force around you, I am so grateful for that.
What are your manifestations for 2025? I don’t have manifestations as such but I have a vision board with tangible action points that work backwards to make sure I can achieve these goals. I don’t believe in “put it out into the universe and it will come.” You have to put the work in and once you achieve that goal that you’ve worked so hard
for it feels so good! We do a vision board as a company too which is so fun to get really clear as a team of what we want to achieve, it feels so exciting!
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? I feel lucky because in the past years I have become very calm, when you go through something difficult or experience a family member suffering with their health you realise nothing else really matters other than health and I feel very lucky everyday to have my health and to be able to move my body, it’s such a gift and I dont ever take that for granted.
Courtney Black
FITNESS TRAINER & ENTREPRENEUR
How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? Being positive is the key to success. I have never excelled in something I didn’t believe first-hand in. You have to be positive towards any goal, friendship, relationship, work task in order to see it through and see it through well. Even when times get hard you need to shift your mindset to think of a positive outcome For me, in fitness, this means telling yourself you can do something rather than keep reminding yourself how hard it might be. That will not help you succeed and move forward. What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? Self-care is so important. If you are stressed and haven’t prioritised your own mental health then nothing will go to plan. You can easily loose yourself and stop being positive if you do not care for yourself. Something as small as getting fresh air can make you think about everything so differently. Self-care improves confidence and confidence improves positivity
Who inspires you and why? I inspire myself daily. I know how much I am capable of and am a living example of you can completely change your world to be more positive and more successful. You should look to yourself for inspiration when times get hard, who do you want to be? How are you going to be proud of yourself?
What are your manifestations for 2025? To have complete clarity of my vision. I want to know exactly where I want to be and how I want to get there. Setting smaller realistic goals and then big goals that I will aim to achieve.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? As I said earlier, positivity is going to drive success so even when I find it hard to be positive I remember its key to moving forward. Remembering that means it’s crucial to change your mindset.
Zeina Abdalla
CEO AT GLUCARE
How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? I am becoming quite the believer in the ‘burnt toast’ theory as bizarre as it may sound to some. For instance, if I miss a workout or my meal prep goes sideways, I remind myself that rest days or unexpected changes are just as crucial to my health journey. ‘Trust the process,’ as the kids have been saying. Positivity is about acknowledging that silver linings exist and perfection is overrated. It’s a mindset that helps me embrace balance over burnout and keeps me motivated in both life and work. What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? Contrary to what the internet glamorises, it’s so much more than journaling and ice baths. For me, my idea of utopia is an extension of self-careprioritising yoga, strength training, walks in the sun, and health check-ups every three months. Real self-care is in daily acts: nourishing your body with wholesome food, prioritising sleep, and listening to its subtle cues. Agains, it’s not about being perfect— it’s about building sustainable habits that make my body and mind feel good. Who inspires you and why? I’m inspired by people who care for their bodies like the sacred vessels they are – those who show up for themselves despite life’s mundane sundries. It’s incredibly empowering to see someone turn small, consistent habits into transformative results. From the mom balancing work and workouts to the colleague committed to their health, their quiet dedication is a reminder that wellness is a long game, built one mindful choice at a time. What are your manifestations for 2025? I have been manifesting (and working towards, if I say so myself) a world where women’s health is the headline act, not a footnote. Fostering a community that espouses that vision is top of mind. For me, it’s about shifting the narrative to include metabolic health as a core part of the conversation – where understanding hormones, energy, and holistic well-being becomes second nature, not a luxury. This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? Perspective is everything. I remind myself that no storm lasts forever, and every challenge comes with
lessons. Pair that with good coffee and even better friends, and I’m set! I also make it a point to check in with my body – whether it’s through movement, mindful eating, or simply stepping outside for a deep breath. You are a sum total of your daily habits after all!
Roxie Nafousi
AUTHOR OF MANIFEST
How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? To me being positive isn’t about being happy all the time, it’s about knowing that even on the dark days, better days our coming. I also believe that it is about cultivate a mindset that allows you to focus on all that you have, appreciate life’s small pleasures, and find value in the challenges that you face. What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? Self-care is the foundation of a positive mindset. When you prioritise your well-being – physically, mentally, and emotionally – you give yourself the energy and clarity to handle life’s challenges with resilience. For me, self-care means carving out time to rest, reflect, and do things that nourish my spirit, whether it’s journaling, meditating, or simply stepping away from work to reconnect with myself. It’s about setting boundaries and making choices that protect your peace so you can show up as your best self, even in tough times. Who inspires you and why? My dad, without a doubt, is the most positive person I know. Even through his years battling cancer, he never once complained. He faced every challenge with grace, humour, and an unwavering belief that life is still full of reasons to smile. His strength, resilience, and ability to focus on the good in every situation inspire me every single day. He taught me that positivity isn’t about avoiding hardships but about choosing hope and gratitude no matter what life throws your way. What are your manifestations for 2025? For 2025, I’m manifesting growth and impact. I see myself continuing to create work that resonates deeply with people, whether that’s through my books, live shows, or new projects. I’m also manifesting abundance –not financially, but in terms of opportunities, connections, and moments of joy. On a personal level, I also want to nurture my relationships, focus on my health, and enjoy travelling to new places.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? During testing times, I remind myself that every challenge is temporary and that they hold a lesson or opportunity for growth. I remind myself of my fourth step of my manifesting practice: Overcome tests from the universe – it
reminds me that there is after we overcome something, we are always rewarded. I also give myself permission to feel my emotions fully instead of suppressing them; and then, when I have done that I find ways to lift my spirits – practicing gratitude, going for a long walk and spending time with people I love.
Sarah Lindsey
FOUNDER OF ROAR FITNESS
How do you define positivity in your personal and professional life? For me, real positivity is not only being able to turn negatives around, but also to embrace the perceived negative situation as a good thing. A lesson rather than a failure, part of the journey rather than an obstacle, and a challenge rather than a problem. This outlook definitely came from being an athlete, as nobody wins every race and I personally saw every loss as all the lessons I needed to learn so that I could win the ones that mattered.
What role does self-care play in sustaining a positive mindset? It’s a bit of a cycle, but how you feel about yourself will determine your inner dialogue. To love yourself, you must invest in yourself and take care of yourself physically and mentally. I think it is easier to take physical action that will impact your mental state rather than the other way around. Exercise can have a profoundly positive effect on your mood, and it is far easier to address your psychology when your mood has already been lifted. Along with the release of dopamine and serotonin, post exercise you feel a sense of achievement and progression, often stress and anxiety relief and it also serves as a distraction enabling a clearer mind.
Who inspires you and why? Physical talent has instinctively always inspired me. It feeds my fascination with the human body, but it’s incredible how the mind has so much control over what the body is truly capable of. Creative thinkers and strong minds are what inspire me more now. People who think differently and aren’t influenced by other people telling them who to be. It’s an inner confidence and understanding of their own beliefs that means they are free to think and act with conviction and calm because, regardless of the outcome, their decision was correct.
What are your manifestations for 2025? My 2024 goal was to buy a dream house in Dubai which I managed just a few weeks ago and that made me incredibly happy! There are three business end goals that I have committed to and put out into the universe for 2025, which include Roar expansion in Dubai and launching a new business that I will announce later in the year. Both of which are very exciting to me. I continue to work on myself and have very personal goals for my heart and mind. I believe that without this the business goals end up not only being limited, but also not really meaning very much. This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? I lean into the physical a lot. I exercise daily regardless of how I feel, even if that’s just a walk. I also rely on meditation in the form of grounding. It’s 15 minutes, standing outside barefoot with my morning coffee. I feel the sun on my face and I physically smile. I don’t care if I look crazy to my neighbours, it’s impossible not to feel happier when you smile and take deep breaths. Other than that, I really try to embrace it all. It sounds a little silly, but my sister and I have a response when the other shares a bad situation which is simply “good” Neither life or business is meant to be perfect or run smoothly. What you’re made of when things go wrong will determine how good things can feel when they go right. You are meant to feel stress and sadness and worry, otherwise you’ll never feel or enjoy the calm, happiness and excitement in life. Find joy every day, be really nice to people and never ever give up.

CAMILLE MACAWILI
BUILDING BLOCKS
Amira Sajwani, founder and CEO of PRYPCO, discusses bringing optimism to the housing market
What has been the vision and purpose form the outset? PRYPCO was founded with a clear vision: to revolutionise the real estate landscape by making property ownership accessible to everyone, as well as transparent and efficient. Our vision is to democratise real estate investment, breaking down barriers to entry and making it possible for a larger profile of individuals to engage in the market with unprecedented ease and flexibility, combining buyers, sellers, investors and brokers, in one platform. You think outside the box – have you always been able to do this, and how has it served you? Innovative thinking has been a core strength throughout my career. It’s the basis of my approach which is honed by observing market inefficiencies and identifying opportunities where others see challenges. This ability to think outside the box led to the foundational concept behind PRYPCO Blocks, or fractional ownership, recognising a target audience in the market to be tapped. This approach has allowed me to pioneer new ways of thinking, enabling the company to remain at the forefront of innovation. It has also served as a guiding principle in evaluating startups on Shark Tank, where creative thinking and resilience are key indicators of success. Have you ever had moments when you have been under great pressure and in those moments, what sustains your drive? Pressure is an inevitable part of leadership, especially when building a business from the ground up. What kept me motivated was my unwavering belief in the vision and the tangible impact we could make. My drive is sustained by the knowledge that every chal-
lenge presents an opportunity for growth and the understanding that perseverance is the bedrock of success. What have been your proudest achievements in your career so far? One of my proudest achievements has been positioning PRYPCO as a disruptor in the real estate sector, offering cutting-edge solutions that have redefined market norms, from PRYPCO Mortgage, Golden Visa Services, to PRYPCO Blocks. Another milestone was the recognition as a judge on Shark Tank, where I have had the privilege to mentor and invest in transformative ideas. On a personal level, it is gratifying seeing PRYPCO truly making a significant difference in how a large spectrum of individuals achieve their real estate investment goals.
Alternatively, what is the greatest risk you’ve faced in growing your business? The greatest risk we faced in growing our business was launching PRYPCO Blocks, a concept that challenged traditional norms and beliefs in real estate ownership. When we introduced the idea, many skeptics questioned its feasibility: Who would want to own a fraction of a property? How will ownership of fractions be proven? Countless an other concerns arose. However, we believed in the power of innovation and the demand for more accessible property investment solutions.
Today, we’ve proven the success of PRYPCO Blocks by fully funding nine properties, with each investor receiving a certificate of ownership. Moreover, the service is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), ensuring transparency and trust. This bold step not only validated the concept but also demonstrated our ability to redefine real estate investment. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? I am deeply grateful to my father, Hussain Sajwani, whose vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering determination have been a constant source of inspiration. Growing up, I had the unique privilege of observing his ability to overcome challenges and transform DAMAC into a global powerhouse. His mentorship instilled in me the core values of perseverance, innovation, and strategic thinking.
From engaging conversations around the dining table to hands-on summer internships across various departments at DAMAC, I gained invaluable insights into leadership, management, and the intricacies of the real estate industry. These formative experiences not only sparked my passion for the field but also equipped me with a comprehensive and nuanced perspective that continues to guide my approach to business today. Have you seen a positive investor mindset change in the real estate space since you founded PRYPCO? Absolutely. You know what they say: the numbers speak for themselves. We announced the largest single retail disbursal in the history of United Arab Bank and PRYPCO’s partnership, amounting to AED 48,000,000. In addition, over AED 500,000,000 in mortgages were disbursed in the month of August alone. On top of
“What kept me motivated was my unwavering belief in the vision and the tangible impact we could make”
that, we successfully raised $10 million in a seed funding round led by Shorooq Partners, Apparel Group, and other key investors. PRYPCO has proven to be a formidable force in the industry, and we will continue to build on our clients’ trust and confidence to achieve even greater milestones.
How does PYRPCO aim to make a positive difference in the real estate market? PRYPCO’s mission is to transform the real estate market by making real estate investment accessible to a wider audience. Through PRYPCO
“PRYPCO was founded with a clear vision: to revolutionise the real estate landscape by making property ownership accessible to everyone, as well as transparent and efficient”
Blocks, we’ve introduced fractional ownership, allowing individuals to invest in high-value properties with as little as AED 500, enabling them to generate passive income. Our platform also ensures greater transparency and trust, as PRYPCO Blocks is regulated by DFSA.
What piece of advice can you give to those looking to build a similar career path and venture on their own - and how was it relevant to you in your life?
My advice is to embrace resilience and remain adaptable to change. Challenges are inevitable, but the key is to view them as opportunities for growth. Be bold in your vision and don’t shy away from taking calculated risks. This mindset has been crucial in my journey, from founding PRYPCO to exploring innovative approaches in the real estate industry. Surround yourself with people who share your passion, and never stop learning.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you aim to have a positive influence for the future generations? I believe in creating a legacy that inspires innovation and empowerment through PRYPCO and beyond. Through PRYPCO, my aim is to pave the way for a more inclusive and technology-driven real estate market. Beyond that, I am passionate about mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs and fostering a culture of resilience and creativity. By championing sustainable and innovative solutions, we can contribute to a brighter, more equitable future for everyone.

A POSITIVE VOICE
Emirati author, poet and artist Shamma Albastaki discusses her creative journey, how she aims to positively shape the arts and cultural landscape through her practices, plus her her milestone debut at the Emirates Literature Festival 2025
Tell us about your career journey. What inspired you to be a poet? There wasn’t a single point of inspiration. It just happened naturally. I started writing when I was very young. I wrote my first poem when I was about seven years old. At a very young age, I just felt drawn to words and stories and the possibilities that they held. I always loved making, listening and imagining stories, and then between the ages of 13 until 17, I’d say that’s when I wrote the most. In my younger years, poetry became both a safe haven and a place for me to channel my thoughts and emotions. As someone who is quite introverted growing up, poetry was a place that would welcome my imagination, there was something so liberating, freeing, and fun about working within structures and rhyme. So, my earliest poems were structured, metrical, and rhythmic. To me, it was like sitting for hours on a puzzle, trying to uncover what meanings it could arrive at through working with this language on a page. Over time, my practice shifted. In undergrad, I studied Literature and Creative Writing at NYU, where I also studied social research and public policy. I was fascinated by the ethnographic component of my sociology degree, which I interwove with my Literature and Creative Writing degree.
I wrote ‘House to House’, which is my very first collection of poetry that will be published by the Emirates Literature Foundation early next year. It was inspired by stories of the Dubai creek communities from the 1940s until the 1980s. The original idea for this collection was born from a poetry workshop that I did in New York called Writers in New York in NYU the summer before
my senior year of university. I spent a year-and-a-half doing ethnographic research, and started writing this collection, which was edited, reviewed, and expanded this year and will be debuted at the Emirates Literature Festival next year. What’s your creative approach when developing the style and language around new literary works – what are the key themes that lead you? I don’t have one creative approach. I sort of let the language guide me and decide how it wants to show up on a page and make itself a poem. Every poem is different, and sometimes it will just come to me. It’s a super psychosomatic and physical process where the page is like a playground, and I just play around with words. And then other times, if it’s project-based, it’ll be more kind of intentional. I always come up with a set of what I call generative constraints, and then work within them to produce something. My latest collection, which I wrote as part of my master’s at Harvard, is called ‘Al Majaz: A Crossing’. And for this, I based it off of my walks around the pedestrian underpasses of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, thinking about the way language travels through a city, and the word al majaz in Arabic literally means crossing. So, it was all about crossing from one point to another across underpasses; from one language to another; from the mind to the page; from various kinds of crossings.
A lot of my work is research based. I don’t really think about definitive genres. I like to go beyond definitional concerns and explore the blur between academia and poetry. How would you describe your style of work in one word? What is your relationship to it and how do you bring that into your work? It
would be infraordinary, which is the word I borrowed from French poet George Perec, and essentially it sort of describes what happens when nothing is happening, details of the everyday that often go unnoticed.
Is there a specific emotion that you hope to evoke in those who experience your work? I don’t intentionally seek to evoke any emotion, but if my work inspires any emotion, then that means that the language is doing something. But even if it doesn’t inspire emotion, I don’t take that to be a marker of non-success in a writing context, because to me, narrative depth means less and less. By the day, I’m less interested in narrative depth and more interested in play and in the infraordinary.
Emirates Literature Festival has become a popular destination for established and aspiring writers and creatives to showcase their work and further expand their cultural calendar. What role does literature play in the wider cultural ecosystem? The Emirates Literature Festival has been an incredible force of literature in the UAE for more than a decade and has really been foundational to the shaping of our Contemporary Literary landscape. Particularly in situating our literature on global horizons and vice versa, bringing new, unfamiliar voices and talents to the region for us to kind of interact with and explore and inspire points of connection. I remember going to the Emirates Lit Fest when I was really young. I think, 13, when I first went and started exploring the programmes. I was really excited to have found a place where I felt like I belonged, a place where my interests, as someone who loved reading and writing, were not only accessible, but where I could really find a sense of community and belonging, where I felt like my interests matter, and I could expand them. It’s more than 10 years now that I look back and I remember just walking around the halls and thinking to myself, “I hope I can share my poetry here someday”. And I’m very blessed and grateful to have had the opportunity to do that on multiple fronts across the years, and now, being published by the Emirates Literature Foundation this year is an extremely special full circle moment. It’s really crucial groundwork that they have been laying and continue to let flourish. How things are changing for Emirati women in UAE across cultural spaces and what are the key things that are shaping it? For Emiratis in general, the landscape has always been rife with opportunities and support, and that has, very much, expanded and flourished. There’s been a lot of support for some pioneering Emirati women artists and the early modernist writers that have been foundational to shaping our literary legacies, and upon whose shoulders we are able to kind of build and create and it’s really exciting to see the many possibilities that lie ahead for making and creating in our context. What has been the most pivotal moment of your career so far? In my writing practice, there’s been so many and have been incredibly blessed and lucky to have had great experiences. I would say one of them was discovering that my poetry was being taught to a university in Japan. Some excerpts from ‘House to House’, were published in the Asymptote Journal of Global Contemporary Literature, which is a very well-known journal for poetry worldwide. My poetry was held in company with the likes of Douglas Kearney, who is a renowned American poet, and various others. A year later, I found out that excerpt was taught in a university in Japan. It was almost surreal for me to think that my poetry about the Dubai Creek from the 1940s until the 1980s is being taught in a completely different context,
having been found out through the publication was really rewarding and exciting. Excerpts of this collection also won the ADMAF Creativity Award, which was a super special moment.
Reading my poetry at COP28, such a pivotal platform, was a big highlight. To know that poetry could be brought on as a means to get people to listen was a big moment in my poetic practice. Through the Emirates Literature Foundation, I read my works at the Natural History Museum in London in celebration of Emirati Women’s Day, under the great big whale skeleton. And I’d say also, having won the Best Thesis Award at Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for my poetry collection. Somehow, I managed to convince the program directors to let me do a creative project as a thesis, I just felt this compulsion, and they told me, “Shamma, we trust your experiment”, and so I did. I never expected that I would actually win this award in my cohort. Who have been the female role models in your life that left an impression on you and why do you admire them? My biggest inspiration growing up is my mother. She’s incredibly strong and a magnetic force of life and energy in the people she meets. She has been one of the pioneers in the UAE banking and finance sector for a long time and has contributed so much during her time. She currently sits on various boards and continues to be an advisor and mentor the younger generations to advance in their careers. This is The Optimism Issue – how do you aim to have a positive influence for the future generations? I’m generally quite optimistic as a person. I believe hope and leading with love are the biggest forces. I think about every action and decision coming from a place of love. I hope to be able to contribute positively to the flourishing and expansion of literature and arts in general, and to be part of the conversation with the younger generation and see the ways in which they innovate, experiment and expand the capacity of what language can do and be.
“...being published by the Emirates Literature Foundation next year is an extremely special full circle moment. It’s really crucial groundwork that they have been laying and continue to let flourish”
AGENT OF CHANGE
Mariam Farag, Global Keynote Speaker and Author, has built a business based on shifting the perspective of how companies and individuals talk about their brand. Here, Mariam puts pen to paper and shares how a humanized and purpose-led approach can affect a positive change in her book, Humanize Your Brand: Stand Out in a Busy Digital World
WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI
“Optimism, for me, is a daily choice. It’s not about ignoring struggles but reframing them as opportunities to grow”
What inspired you to write a book, Humanize Your Brand: Stand Out in a Busy Digital World – was the idea percolating beforehand, or was it a leap of faith? It was a bit of both. For years, I saw how brands struggled to create genuine connections in a world that’s increasingly digital. The idea of humanizing brands had been growing inside me, but deciding to write the book was a leap of faith. It was my way of stepping out of my comfort zone and putting my beliefs into action – sharing my story and insights so others could connect more authentically with their audiences. In your book, you discuss taking on a holistic approach to building meaningful connections, online and offline – can you expand on this? And who can benefit from this? A holistic approach means seeing the bigger picture – your audience isn’t just a statistic; they’re real people with emotions, values, and unique stories. Whether you’re communicating online or offline, it’s about creating experiences that feel genuine and personal. Online, this could mean sharing relatable stories or engaging meaningfully with your audience. Offline, it’s about showing up as your authentic self and building relationships based on trust. This approach is valuable for everyone – from entrepreneurs and corporate leaders to freelancers and individuals. Whether you’re building a brand, a business, or just meaningful relationships, it’s about leading with authenticity and connection.
Why is finding your own personal voice so important in business and in life – and how can one find this? Your personal voice is your unique identity – it’s what sets you apart in a world full of noise. In business, it builds trust and relatability. In life, it’s how you express your values and beliefs. To find your voice, you need to embrace your story – every success, failure, and lesson that makes you who you are. Reflect on what you stand for, and give yourself permission to show up authentically, even if it feels vulnerable. It’s not about perfection; it’s about being real. What advice can you give to those who are afraid of putting themselves out there, and how is this relevant to your life? Start small. You don’t have to share everything all at once. Begin by sharing what you’re comfortable with – something that feels meaningful to you. For me, putting myself out there felt intimidating at first, especially sharing vulnerable moments. But I learned that when I opened up, people connected with me on a deeper level. The key is to focus on your purpose and remember that your story can inspire and help others. Don’t aim for perfection; aim for connection. What activities or tools can help support celebrating our own successes and bring out their best self? Celebrating your successes doesn’t have to be grand – it’s about acknowledgment. I suggest creating a “success jar,” where you jot down your wins throughout the year, no matter how small. Journaling is another powerful tool to reflect on what you’ve achieved and how it made you feel. Sharing accomplishments with people who support and uplift you can also amplify the joy. For me, gratitude plays a huge role – taking a moment to pause, say “I did this,” and appreciating the journey helps me see my growth. These small habits fuel confidence and remind you of your unique strengths. How do you balance being commercial while staying true to your values? It starts with clarity – knowing your core values and sticking to them. Whether it’s me as an individual or a brand, I always ask, “Does this align with my purpose? Is it creating genuine value?” For
brands, balancing commercial success and authenticity means integrating purpose into every decision. For example, brands that embrace sustainability or social impact do so not because it’s trendy, but because it aligns with their values. It’s also about transparency and consistency – audiences notice when your actions don’t align with your words. I believe that profit and purpose can coexist. The sweet spot lies in choosing opportunities that align with your mission and communicating authentically. When your audience sees that alignment, you build trust, which is the foundation of both meaningful connections and long-term commercial success. What are some of your personal daily rituals that help you with self-expression and self-examination? I start my mornings with intentionsetting – it’s a simple practice that keeps me focused and mindful. Journaling is my go-to tool for self-expression; it helps me unpack my thoughts, reflect on my feelings, and clarify my goals. I also dedicate time to learning, whether through books, podcasts, or exploring new perspectives – it fuels my creativity and growth. Movement, like Pilates or even a walk-in nature, helps me reconnect with my body and find clarity. These rituals may seem small, but they create space for self-reflection and allow me to express myself authentically.
“I believe that profit and purpose can coexist. The sweet spot lies in choosing opportunities that align with your mission and communicating authentically”
Social media is part of the mainstream. How do you manage being a thought leader in such an effortless way? The key is authenticity – I don’t try to be perfect; I focus on being real. Social media can feel overwhelming if you approach it as a performance, so I approach it as a conversation. I share what I believe in, what inspires me, and what I think can spark meaningful dialogue. Thought leadership isn’t about being flawless; it’s about being consistent, relatable, and intentional. I also make it a point to listen to and engage with my audience. Effortlessness comes from alignment –when you’re sharing ideas that reflect your values, it feels natural.
You’ve had an incredible career journey so far. Was there a moment you considered giving up, and where did you get the drive to stay positive and continue through your challenges? Yes, there were moments when giving up felt like the easiest option, especially during tough times like 2020. I was overwhelmed by personal and professional setbacks and doubted whether I could keep going. In those moments, I leaned on my support system – my family, friends, and mentors – who reminded me of my purpose. I also gave myself permission to rest and reflect without guilt. The drive to continue came from focusing on the bigger picture and recognising that challenges are temporary. Each obstacle shaped me into a stronger and more compassionate person, and I’m grateful for the lessons they brought.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay optimistic? Optimism, for me, is a daily choice. It’s not about ignoring struggles but reframing them as opportunities to grow. I practise gratitude – it helps me focus on the positive, even in the smallest things. I also surround myself with forward-thinking, supportive people who inspire me to keep going. Staying connected to my purpose is another anchor –knowing that my work has meaning keeps me motivated. Finally, I remind myself that every setback is temporary and that progress, no matter how small, is still progress. Optimism is believing in what’s possible, even when the path ahead isn’t clear.

Christina
Maroudias, founder of CM Communications Middle East, discusses celebrating five
years
of entrepreneurship
and what it takes to build a bespoke brand in the PR industry
What inspired you to found CM Communications Middle East? Being able to work on projects I am passionate and excited about truly brings me so much joy. It’s something I never take for granted. I have always wanted to work for myself, and when we need to make a big decision in life, I believe the universe will push us towards it in its own ways. When I started CM Comms, I wanted to develop consistent, curated communications for luxury brands, and become someone within the industry that you can call for
PR advice, someone that you can trust. Every campaign is so different, and I love helping people work out the best approach and strategy for them and their projects. Our work is centered around raising awareness for people, places and concepts that come together to form a balanced lifestyle. Health and happiness are at the core of everything we do – whether it is travel and inspiration, nourishment, movement, or mindfulness. The secret to happiness truly is found in our daily routines, so we aim to highlight
concepts that can create a beautiful way of living. Communications that enhance your health, wellness and happiness.
What have been some of the key events that CM Communications has worked on? I am so grateful and feel so proud to have worked on so many fun and exciting projects. We represent Roxie Nafousi, a wonderful and inspiring author and motivational speaker who has helped me immensely on my own personal manifesting journey. Chef Izu Ani, who has a philosophical approach to dining, and has taught me so much about food, life, how to be present and live life fully. Most recently, we opened Mimi MeiFair and Jamavar in Downtown Dubai, an exquisite collection of Michelin-Star restaurants from Mayfair, with Samyukta Nair, who teaches me about the art of hospitality, joy and friendship. This season, we are also working with ZUMA on their beautiful winter pop-up experience in the Ras Al-Khaimah desert, which is a dream come true. For so many years, I wanted to work in hospitality and represent luxury hotels, and it is so exciting to achieve something you have put so much effort into. I am beyond grateful to work with the Four Seasons and help raise awareness for their beautiful brand and incredible concepts. In November, we celebrated ten years of Four Seasons Dubai at Jumeirah Beach with a beautiful floral installation by Jeff Leatham, and over the summer we had so much fun working with Pavyllon in the Four Seasons Park Lane, an incredible restaurant and terrace by renowned Chef Yannick Alleno.
One of my favourite things about my job is seeing the growth and evolution of brands and concepts that we have worked with for a number of years. It fills me with so much joy to see GAIA and Scalini exceed and expand internationally, as I have worked with both restaurants since they opened in Dubai and they hold such a special place in my heart. It really is such an honour to feel included as part of the team – the best partnerships are based on friendship and collaboration. What advice would you give to women who wish to launch their own brand? Listen to your intuition. Sometimes it takes a while, but we all have an inner voice and it just gets louder until we do what we know is right.
Understanding what we want, and most importantly, why we want it, can take a few attempts (and many, many mistakes in my case), but starting with a clear, simple goal will be so helpful. Ask yourself what you want to do, and then keep asking yourself why you want to do it until the answers reveal themselves. Sometimes a good friend will help you with this, and sometimes the answers will come after a yoga class, in the shower, during a walk, but mostly when your mind is calm. I am a huge fan of small incremental upgrades and changes towards our
goals – I really believe success is found in the smaller moments. How we spend our time, and the actions we take each day. If we break things down to the most simple, managable next step, we will achieve it – it’s inevitable. Also, we have to celebrate our wins! When you achieve one of your goals, give yourself a little treat. Buy yourself a cute, symbolic gift or take yourself somewhere you have always wanted to go. It will be a gift of gratitude to yourself and a reminder that you can do the things you set your mind to. How has the PR industry evolved since you’ve launched? I studied PR and have worked in the industry my entire career, and I still find it fascinating every day. To me, PR is more about psychology and connection than anything else. It is finding, and often creating the “tipping point”, of what becomes interesting to others. It is so important, yet so subtle. At its core, PR is about relating to people, understanding what they want and need, and then translating our messaging into the language that our audience understands best. Those “translations” can be through events, activation or across traditional media, interviews, press releases, social media, by working with key opinion leaders, personalities and so much more. It really depends on what we want to say and who we want to listen to us. The way that we absorb media and information will continue to evolve, which means that the possibilities and opportunities are really quite endless. Owning a PR agency comes with challenges. How do you foster creativity and collaboration within your team? I am so beyond lucky to work with such an incredible, talented team. We all actually just like each other and support one another which is so rare. I aim to create an environment where everyone feels heard, supported and appreciated, and I am so grateful to work with people that make me feel that way too. Our work is fast paced and often quite a lot of pressure, but when you take a moment to understand why, you realise that it is important to people because they care about what they are putting out into the world. It is quite an honour to be able to be a part of that and to help our clients achieve their goals and dreams. I think honesty is so important, and I am quite open with how I feel about things which is not always so common in my role. I think being vulnerable, kind and transparent allows others to feel safe to open up and be themselves too. What makes your agency stand out in the industry? I consciously curate our client portfolio to ensure that everyone we work with aligns with our values to create a balanced approach. We focus on luxury because their products and services are crafted with time and energy, there is a depth and beauty to their story which is so interesting to talk about. We put our energy into quality over
myself and do what I know is right. Acting in alignment with ourselves and our values truly is a form of self-care and selflove, even when it doesn’t make sense to others. We have to ignore the outside noise a lot of the time, which is fairly terrifying, but understanding what we want and need gives us the ability to find and connect with people that truly align with us.
How do you think women can support each other to achieve better quality results? When we have a mindset of abundance and gratitude, and believe that there are more than enough opportunities for us all, it naturally allows us to encourage and empower each other. As women, we listen, communicate and support each other so well, and we have the ability to understand and connect with one another. One of my closest friends recently mentioned how rich we are in health and friendship and it is something I now remind myself of every day – I am so so grateful to have such a supportive group of friends and to be surrounded by people that make me laugh, listen to me when I’m over thinking and encourage me when I’m not feeling my best. I really hope I make them feel the same way, it’s one of my biggest life goals to be supportive and nurturing to those around me.
quantity, as I believe that creates the best opportunities for exposure, and allows us to really dive deeply into the story behind each concept and campaign. Quiet luxury is something that we naturally navigate towards, I prefer an understated approach that truly showcases the brand, personality or product itself. I like to maintain humility and transparency across everything we do, which means that we don’t represent brands that we don’t believe in or promote things that wouldn’t fit into a healthy, happy lifestyle. Those are my non-negotiables, and I sometimes struggle to explain that to people
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times? In the most testing of times I actually write a gratitude
“When we have a mindset of abundance and gratitude, and believe that there are more than enough opportunities for us all, it naturally allows us to encourage and empower each other”
driven by growth, numbers or renumeration, but I would much rather be selective so that we have the ability to work on projects and with people that I adore. What’s next in the pipeline for the brand? I would love to work on curated campaigns for global luxury brands and hotels, becoming an extension of their in-house team and incorporating the elements of a happy, healthy lifestyle across all of our campaigns. Moving forwards, I aim to focus on highlighting international concepts to a regional audience, and working with people and on projects that inspire and excite me, and everyone else. One of my biggest ambitions is to build and sustain a really happy team, and a balanced, flexible schedule that allows everyone the space to be creative and feel passionate about their work. The agency celebrates five years this January. What are you most proud of? Honestly, I am most proud of staying true to myself in such a competitive industry. I genuinely really appreciate all of the guidance and advice I receive, but the past five years have taught me to listen to that voice inside, trust
list for the issue itself or the things I am anxious about. It takes a little time, but it is such a healing process. It helps me realise that every issue we face is curriculum for our personal growth and expansion, and the things that test us are really our next steps towards our goals – even if they don’t look that way at the time. I love a little routine and the daily rituals that ground me and make me feel content, having a little morning walk, listening to podcasts, yoga, running at sunset, going to Pilates, and phone calls or voice notes with my mum, sister and best friends. When I need an extra boost of motivation, I like to create vision boards to manifest the life I would like to build and things I would love to experience. I pop onto Pinterest for visual inspiration, and have a little think about the next steps I need to take in order to achieve it. The only difference between us and the people living the life we want, is that those people actually planned it. We must take a moment to appreciate it all, the good and the not so good, and have a little laugh along the way.

Ounass Maison opens its doors to an offline shopping haven with immaculate design by Beirutbased architecture duo, David & Nicolas
Located in Mandarin Oriental, Jumeirah, the region’s leading luxury online player, Ounass, unveils its Maison – a brick-and-mortar physical retail space offering a bespoke and tangible shopping experience to its VIP clientele and hotel guests.
The house speaks the same language as the Ounass shopping experience: curated, luxurious, and stylish. It houses three private family-style
shopping suites where customers can indulge in styling consultations and fittings ensuring a personalised experience from a selection of well-loved brands, both international and regional, such as Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and more. Designed as a place of discovery, Ounass Maison invokes a sensation of stepping into a private apartment rather than a traditional retail space. Exquisitely designed by Beirut-
based renowned architecture duo, David & Nicolas, the Maison intended to create a sense of community and convenience, where the space feels less transactional. A quick wander around, you’ll get to discover an eclectic mix of revival aesthetics and thoughtfully placed decor in an environment that’s coloured with muted shades of earthy tones such as mustard, cream, terracotta, red, cobalt blue, and more to create a sense of comfort and intimacy.
PERSONAL SPACE
In the office with Fay Ezzat, founder of L’Atelier Middle East
WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI
How long have you been in this space? It actually took me a few good months to establish and renovate the whole place, and I can proudly say that we have been operating here for a year-and-a-half now.
Have you custom-built any bespoke pieces? In our L’Atelier we mostly produce clothes for different local designers from the region as well as outside. We are getting requests from designers from France, Australia, but
we also have started doing pieces for Jo Malone, Bvlgari, Victoria’s Secret and other big global brands for their campaigns. In the meantime, I have been creating a few bespoke pieces for my own brand for this year’s launch.
How do you think the interior reflects you? I have been creating this space not only for myself, but also for designers and brands to inspire and produce their collections within
a beautiful set-up and light space. I believe that the environment is very important when it comes to creation, that’s why I built this place to make everyone feel the fashion energy, where they can come up with new ideas. The way that reflects in L’Atelier is not only production but is also a space to create, design and do fittings. L’Atelier is a fashion hub. Describe your taste in three words. Sharp, androgynous and minimalistic.
