Natural Radiance

History has proven that using naturally derived skincare products deliver a radiance that we all desire. A radiance that comes from enhancing our own natural glow. This is at the heart of the Camel Soap Factory’s skincare range - Natural Skin Rescue. Each product uses Arabia’s own cosmetic super ingredients – camel milk and frankincense – as a base for powerful, natural skincare. Camel Milk, known as the “white gold” of the desert, is one of the beauty industry’s best-kept secrets, despite it being used in the region for centuries. It was revered by the Ancient Egyptians and Bedouins, who used camel fat and milk to protect their skin from the harsh desert sun. Frankincense – known as al-luban in Arabic or olibanum in Asia – is still widely used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. The oil has

ancient roots – beyond being the companion of Gold and Myrhh – as a naturally effective anti-acne and anti-wrinkle remedy. Taking inspiration from these key ingredients and ancient practices, The Camel Soap Factory has created powerful products with their Natural Skin Rescue range. The flagship being Camel Milk Face Rescue, which provides intense moisturisation for the skin. By including camel milk, the moisturiser is rich in naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) which promotes healthy cell regeneration. This helps to reduce fine lines and softens the skin while keeping it supple and smooth. The high vitamin and mineral content is also hugely beneficial, with it being particularly rich in Vitamin C – an integral ingredient for tissue repair. The second fundamental

feature, frankincense, is known to diminish blemishes and scars while combating dryness and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin discolouration. To top it off, the aroma of the oil makes using the luxurious cream a meditative experience. These natural ingredients are expertly combined in a simple, natural formula with minimal additives and high-quality oils to create a moisturiser that smooths, evens and enhances your natural glow. Camel Milk Face Rescue can be used in the mornings and evenings – ideal for the face, neck and eyes but also for any areas that need extra care. It is the perfect beauty product to claim your natural radiance. Visit naturalskinrescue.com to shop their products

3/1/21 2:18 PM

What is your background? I was born in South Korea but spent my early years in America and then moved to New Zealand and on to Australia. I was lucky enough to have travelled and lived with my diverse family members who had settled in different cities, so I feel like I’ve always been attracted to all aspects of creativity and new environments. What inspired you to launch aaizél? Fashion was something I always saw myself in, but that strong desire of wanting to have my own brand wasn’t until after graduating university. Fashion had always been something that’s imaginative, expressive and exciting for me to engage in, whether it be choosing fabrics, designing, sewing, castings or styling. aaizél is like my life journey, every process involved in putting together a collection is fulfilling and motivating for me not only because of the end result but there’s always something new I learn each season. Who is the aaizél woman? The aaizél woman is nomadic in her knowledge while grounded in structure. She is curious with a consciousness for quality. She’s a progressive individual with a poetic spirit. The brand is focused on sustainability. Has this been the case from the start? Yes, the idea of being able to self-learn and move towards change for a better future is something I’m committed to as I’ve always had a strong appreciation for quality and longevity over quantity and trends as well as the process of how designs are created. I’m still researching and learning but it’s important to be conscious and informed about labour conditions, wastage and water footprints in the industry you’re in and raising customer awareness of where all products come from, how they’re made and the social and environmental impact of the sourcing and production. Can you talk us through your creative process? I usually have so many ideas in my head and start with all types of sketches. They’re on my board for a while until I cull about half of them and I start developing around the rest. I source fabrics around the same time, mostly I have a specific idea of what fabrications/textures I want to be working with for certain styles. Keeping all four seasons in mind for both hemispheres when designing is something that comes naturally from my own experience. Creating pieces that can be worn across all seasons timelessly, that can easily go with your existing wardrobe and carefully sourcing fabrics that will last. Where do you get the inspiration? I love recalling the beautiful experiences I had from certain places. Travelling for me is the most

valuable way to reward and educate myself on other cultures as well as soaking up inspirations and new feelings. The last trip I took was right before the outbreak in Spain, luckily, I was able to thoroughly enjoy the journey and when I returned home, we went into lockdown. During the continuous months of dullness, I could relive good memories through photos and videos of the relaxed atmosphere, people, architecture/art and I was able to create a collection. In your design process, how do you ensure the process is sustainable to protect the wellbeing of the planet? There are so many ways to operate sustainably, partnering with businesses that have similar values where their main principles are fair trade, ensuring that ethical practice is embraced within the production process. I work with small family run manufacturers who are ethically accredited and when you have a strong, caring relationship for one another, it’s easy to see how they operate and their values within their workplace. Things that play major parts in production such as fabrications to packaging should be thoughtfully chosen, I’ve been working closely with a textiles agency whose fabrics are sourced predominantly from finely edited stock used by high-end brands, these fabrics are rescued before being sent to landfills. Although aaizél is a micro business and it’s a step-by-step method, if we can all get into the habit of practising sustainability and raising awareness amongst customers into buying smart and supporting ethical brands, this can really make an impact in the long run. In your opinion, what changes does the fashion industry have to make in order to help the wellbeing of the planet? I think it comes down to individuals involved in the fashion industry playing their part to help the wellbeing of the planet. Sustainable practices have been implemented by many workplaces already but we need to promote more to be able to combat unethical business practices and fast fashion speeding up climate change. As a designer, my role is to create a cohesive and functional range that has both social and environmental impact in sourcing and production as well as heightening customer awareness of the importance of sustainable development. You collaborated with NET-A-PORTER for their NET SUSTAIN collection. This is such an incredible milestone. How did the collaboration come about? I’ve always been a visual person and treated Instagram as my own design aesthetic diary rather than a selling platform. Being a one-woman show with little to no budget for marketing PR, I feel like I have spent so much time on Instagram naturally, creating a brand story through a series of inspirations and details of work I’ve done in the past with friends. I am beyond grateful for my dream retailer to have found aaizél via social media and giving the platform an opportunity to launch because this partnership has supported the brand in so many ways. What have been the major milestones in your career? Launching at NETA-PORTER exclusively for NET SUSTAIN. My dream retailer becoming my first ever stockist is really a dream come true. I felt so rewarded and the whole experience boosted my desire to work even harder. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – how do you implement wellness practices in your life? I find cleaning and organizing quite therapeutic since it gives me a much clearer mind and limits stress when I have a tidy work and personal space. I try to work on my posture as well since I’m always slouching over designs or patternmaking. I also take life drawing classes whenever I have spare time to keep my freehand skills and creativity flowing.

Sustainability has emerged as a key focus for the fashion industry. Contemporary brands are incorporating sustainability at their core, from the outset. Australia-based aaizél is one such brand. Since launching in 2016, designer and founder Minnie Jo has ensured sustainability is at the core of the brand’s DNA, putting longevity and quality at the forefront over quantity and following trends. However, the designer notes it’s an ongoing process. “I’m still researching and learning but it’s important to be conscious,” she says. This is how she ensures aaizél is continually supporting the wellbeing of the planet through mindful, sustainable and ethical practices. It’s something that’s certainly served her well, as aaizél is one of the hero brands of NET-A-PORTER’s curated platform NET SUSTAIN dedicated to consciously crafted brands. Emirates Woman sat down with the designer to discuss how her collaboration with NET-A-PORTER came about, her creative process, the sustainable practices of aaizél and what makes up the aaizél woman.

Ethical Soles

What inspired you to partner on the launch of VEJA? SK: Ghislain and I met when we were 14 years old. We graduated with an economics degree and then eventually started working in New York and Washington DC straight after. After a few months of working in banks, we decided that this was not the life we wanted. We started an NGO and travelled around the world for a year, while going on a field trip to study 70 projects. We went to China, Brazil, India, Bolivia, Vietnam, Australia and many more places to

68 emirateswoman.com

EW_032021_P68-69_Veja.indd 68

analyse projects and improve them when it came to reducing pollution, respecting the environment and enhancing social conditions of the local population. After seeing it first hand in the field, that actions did not follow words from companies, eventually at the age of 25 we decided to create a project that would be based on action, not words. Hence, VEJA was born. The brand was established in 2005, how has the retail market/brand grown changed since then? SK: We are not looking for fast

growth, we focus on creating deep roots. Since 2005, VEJA has been growing organically, step by step, without investors. We source and control every raw material and the processes within our production chain so it takes time, but we are sure that it is the best way in order to create a positive impact. Today, VEJA has over 200 talented people in Paris, New York, and Brazil. We’ve bought more than 390 tons of organic cotton; 450 tons of Amazonian rubber and we’ve sold more than 4.5 million pairs globally. What is the core DNA of VEJA? SK: The core of VEJA since its inception is to know everything about our sneakers from the agroecological and organic cotton fields in Brazil and Peru, to the mud of the Amazonian forest where we buy our rubber from seringueiros (rubber tappers living in the forest who collect latex from the rubber trees). We spend months and months in the factories where we produce our sneakers, and we have a team in Brazil that visits them every day, while we’ve also managed to build a strong relationship with our suppliers. This is why we can say that ecology is not a burden for a company, but a strength. To understand sustainability, you need to meet people, spend time with them to understand their difficulties and find solutions together. Design is just as important as sustainability – were these both clear focuses for the brand from the outset? SK: VEJA is walking on two feet: ecology and social justice on one side, design on the other. We never compromise between the two of them. A lot of our clients don’t know what is behind the brand, which is not a problem for us. A lot

of people are discovering it every day, and we are cool with this. Which piece to date has been your most popular shape? SK: We love minimalism and are inspired by the worker outfit, military shoes, trail shoes etc. We design pairs that can be worn every day, and that we love first. Our models are timeless (for example, we launched the Esplar in 2010, and it is still selling well). We launched the Campo style in 2019, and it is one of our best shoes. How has partnering with ecommerce platforms such as MATCHESFASHION helped to grow the brand? SK: We work with more than 2,500 retailers in more than 45 countries. Some are small but very cool stores in big cities, some are big e-shops. But we don’t differentiate. Since 2005 we haven’t held stock to ensure we don’t overproduce. Some clients sell-out after a couple of weeks and ask us to restock, but we tell them they will have to wait until next season! You have global clients – do you see trends in buying patterns as a brand? SK: Our first customer is always us, we never set benchmarks or carry out research studies as we always create what we like to wear. We love minimalism and are inspired by the worker outfit, military shoes, trail shoes... We design pairs that can be worn every day. Can you explain the biodegradability of the sneakers? SK: Usually, a pair of sneakers ends up in the trash. However, sneakers are among the most complex products to recycle. After all, they are made of many different materials, often fused together. For a long time, the end of life of our sneakers has been one of our main limits, and it’s still a complex subject. For several months now, VEJA has been developing its recycling project. The purpose is to sort the different materials of a VEJA trainer such as the Amazonian rubber, organic cotton or leather to establish a recycling chain. Being aware of the origin of our materials allows us to create a different end life for our sneakers. But we are only at the very beginning of the project. Today, we have recycling boxes in our Parisian store and at our Store in Bordeaux, VEJA x Darwin where people can drop off their VEJA pairs that are no longer in wearable condition. Your use corn waste to construct the sneakers, how did you decide on this material? SK: We have been looking for smart alternatives to leather for years. In 2014, we started a research and development programme to enlarge our materials base, which made us visit dozens of innovative suppliers around the world, attend conferences and contact

biologists who did many tests and try various different fabrics. Our objective was simple yet rather ambitious, it was to offer a biobased alternative to leather, something that has a great touch and feel, with very good resistance. Our goal was to find an alternative, without using plastic, something like the majority of vegan leathers in the market but replacing leather with plastic is not a good enough solution for us. Back in 2019, we released one of our first models made from corn waste leather (C.W.L), a vegan alternative to leather. It’s an innovative material that took us four years to find and yet unfortunately, we still could not manage to trace it entirely. Months of research and sourcing enabled us to find a better composition and source the raw material from its roots. The new C.W.L is a hundred per cent organic cotton canvas coated with P.U., corn starch and ricinus oil. The organic cotton used is the same we source for all our canvas, lining, and laces with everything made in Brazil. What have been the biggest challenges you’ve had and how did you overcome them as a brand? SK: The main challenge for

VEJA is to go beyond ourselves. We have come a long way in the last 16 years by creating the first sneaker that goes up the production chain, made with ecological materials like organic cotton or Amazonian rubber and that we source directly. VEJA is growing all over the world without investors, organically going from strength to strength. We’ve created a fantastic team of more than a 200 people. Our main goal is not a financial objective; it is to create a company that could draw a path that many others could follow if they like it and to create a company that Ghislain and I would have loved to work for. What advice would you give anyone wanting to launch their own brand? SK: Do what you like to do every day, even if people don’t believe in your project. Back in 2005, nobody was talking about ecology or social justice. When we launched VEJA, everybody was laughing at us, telling us we were crazy to produce sneakers that cost 5 to 7 times the price of another sneaker brand and that we were crazy to still sell them at the same price by eradicating marketing and advertising budget. But we knew our reality was in the fields, close to the producers, in the mud of the Amazonian forest, and not paying for big advertising campaigns with stars. Just do what you want to see, as what matters is to act now. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’, what does that mean to you as a brand? SK: A slow time, to act differently, with more consciousness – I think that wellness starts here.

and serve its purpose beside being beautiful. Sustainability is a key focus – has this been the case from the start? Sustainability was always important to me although 15 years ago we didn’t have as many options as we do now. However, being kind to the environment and cherishing it was always part of Nanushka. With time as I uncovered and learned about the damaging impact of the industry on the environment along with its effect on people, our goals became even more clearer. Since the beginning we’ve always valued accountability, transparency and to value the human side as well as the environment at Nanushka. How has Nanushka evolved as a brand? I feel that Nanushka has evolved and matured with me. When I launched the brand

in 2005 I was very young and inexperienced in terms of business, despite being daring. I think the evolution of Nanushka also represents my evolution as a woman. I still consider myself daring, that’s my bohemian nomadic side, but in a more mature way and I think Nanushka represents that very well. Throughout the years from a womenswear only brand, we’ve evolved and grown into a much larger business with our values reflecting on everything we do. What changes need to be implemented in the industry to support the wellbeing of the planet? I think there are many different steps one can take to improve and reduce the adverse impact of the fashion industry. Especially after the pandemic, not only have the indus-

What do the first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine? I start my day with a quick meditation to prepare myself for the day, followed by a morning coffee and a walk with my dog Ginie. What inspired you to launch Nanushka? I founded Nanushka in 2005, right after graduating from London College of Fashion. I was very inspired by the theme of my thesis which I really wanted to develop further, into a full collection and not just a few pieces. The theme was connected with the Bauhaus movement which was very significant in Hungary and the concept which lies on “Form follows Function” became one of Nanushka’s key founding values. I believe that a garment has to be functional, comfortable

try but also the consumers realised that we need to change the way we work to incorporate a more environmentally responsible surrounding. One of the key steps to take control is to reduce overconsumption and create products which have essence, where long lasting craftsmanship is valued. What lies at the core of the brand’s DNA? Nanushka’s DNA as a sustainable modern luxury brand lies in its Hungarian heritage coupled with a bohemian, nomadic spirit. Nanushka eptiomises the modern bohemian spirit – rebellious, free-spirited and driven to explore the very essence of life. We as a brand believe in the three pillars which include, craftsmanship, experimentations and progressiveness.

What have been the hurdles you have experienced in your career and how did you overcome them? There have been many ups and downs throughout the years, at some point I almost lost my business. However, hope, resilience and trust have helped me overcome the obstacles and allowed me to grow into the person I am today. I launched Nanushka without any business experience after graduating and throughout the years I had to learn the ins and outs of the industry and adapt to new challenges – I think surrounding myself with colleagues I trust has helped me grow. Which have been the key milestones? The past few years Nanushka has reached so many amazing milestones, but I would highlight the opening of our New York and Lon-

don flagship stores and cafes, establishing a sustainability department within the company and launching menswear. Our next big step is going to be the launch of our sustainable eyewear collection at the end of March. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – how do you implement wellness practices in your life? Meditation, spirituality and nature are very important for me to find balance. I have always practised both, but meditation became increasingly more important throughout the past year when we had to find new ways of working and encountered numerous lockdowns. Nature plays a very important part in my life as well, I always loved hiking and long walks with my dog Ginie – it helps me unwind after a long day or week.

Hair Health Global hairstylist Nicky Lazou reveals her secrets to achieving optimum hair health Can you talk us through your career in hairstyling and hairdressing? I started getting into hair when I was around 14-years-old working in salons as an apprentice and just grew from there. Originally, I wanted to be a journalist, but I was just naturally talented with creating styles. I think it’s because I have so much hair – I used to do my own hair really well and I learnt from that. I fell into hairdressing just because I gradually built such a huge clientele, but I also think

84 emirateswoman.com

EW_032021_P84-85_Nicky Lazou.indd 84

what really drew me into this career is the fact that someone can feel so good because of you. The feeling that you can make someone’s day better when they leave your salon is priceless. It was also bringing me a great income from such a young age, it meant I could help the people around me including my mum and dad and it inspired me to just keep working hard. I have come through some challenges with people knocking me down, but I kept pushing through. I’m very

creative and see my hairdressing as a form of art. This is how I came to create ‘The Melt’, my balayage signature, by experimenting on myself and my family. I then expanded my business to the Middle East after meeting someone in Selfridges, Zeina, who is from Kuwait. She told me she follows me on Instagram and asked me to consider flying to Kuwait to do hair. From there I went to Dubai, to Qatar, to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia is next. What is your approach to creating healthy hair? I feel like hair is such an important thing in a woman’s life. I see hair as our crowns and just like you invest in quality skincare and body care, we need to invest in quality hair care. People don’t seem to understand that healthy hair does come from within. If you eat healthy, you will see the benefits in your hair. My approach to hair is: we need to love our hair, nurture our hair and treat it like it’s our best friend. In terms of wellness of the hair, what do you recommend your clients do? For the wellness of the hair, it all starts with hair care. I used to travel all the way from Yorkshire to Leeds to Harvey Nichols to source the best hair care that was out there. Eating the right foods has major benefits all around. It helps to have a healthy scalp, which then helps your hair to grow. You need to have the right nutrition to ensure your hair will be at its optimum health. Then you need to have the right hair care, such as masks, to maintain its health. What is the best way to achieve thick and full hair? Whatever you put on the inside of you, will show on the outside. You need to keep your scalp and hair follicles clean to aid in hair growth. Your natural oils are also fantastic for stimulating hair growth, that’s why I recommend not to wash your hair too often as you strip your hair of these natural oils. I’m a huge believer in hair masks. Once a week you should be doing a hair mask to keep the strength of your hair intact. You’ll have heard of the term “wear and tear” of the hair once it grows, because if something is not cared for properly as it grows it becomes weak and limp, resulting in breakage. Overall, you need to ensure you do regular hair masks, go for regular trims and don’t over-colour it. This is why my balayage is great, because it lasts so long without having to put chemicals on the ends. How does your scalp affect your overall hair health? A lot of scalp issues come from intaking too much sugar and a bad diet. The weather also has a major effect on the scalp and can cause your scalp to become very dry. Not rinsing your hair properly when washing it can also attribute to poor scalp health. Discussing your issues with your hairdresser can help and also seeking advice from a dermatologist on your scalp’s health can be very

BEAUTY

3/1/21 3:24 PM

beneficial, especially in identifying if you are using the right products for you. It’s also good to use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while because you can get build-up on both the scalp and hair from the products you use. How can you combat damaged from colouring? If you hair is damaged from colour, it can be really hard to rectify. A lot of people come to me wanting to correct their hair immediately in one appointment. However, it’s going to be a hair journey. What I advise people to do is get a regular trim and regular treatments which don’t rectify the issue, but will help stop your hair’s condition from worsening. But most of all, I encourage my clients to forget about the past and focus on getting back to where they want to be and the end goal of their hair. You have a global client base. How did you take your business global? I started working in Birmingham, UK, then I took my business to London. I then expanded to Kuwait, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Los Angeles and now Saudi Arabia. It’s basically word of mouth. I don’t believe in any shortcuts to success. I worked hard, did my best for people, created beautiful work and the word spread. I also believe if you deliver great service, that is what leaves a lasting impression. I want people to get the highest standard that they paid for which, in turn, leads to referrals through word of mouth. In terms of your customer ratio, what is your Middle Eastern clientele? My clientele in the Middle East feels like one big family. I have so much appreciation for these women. They’re so smart, kind and beautiful. The appreciation I get from these women is just another level. Their kindness, the way they speak to me is just amazing. It’s a massive clientele for me and I’ve really missed them during the pandemic. It’s such a joy for me to get on a plane to see them, which is why I’ve been doing this for so long. I’ve been working in the Middle East for about eight years now. How would you say the market in this region for hair differs from other areas of the globe? I just love the fact that people in the Middle East love to look after their hair. They are happy to listen and go on this journey of achieving beautiful hair. Sometimes in other regions, people just want a quick fix or a style that’s just the fashion trend of the moment. What I love about the Middle East is the women here want to look effortless, classic and timeless, which is what I’m passionate about when it comes to hair. What have been the hurdles you have experienced in your career? It’s been quite an easy road for me, because when you do what you love you know you’re on the right path. I know I’m doing what I’m meant to be doing in life. The only hurdles I’ve had is not being able to create something for someone that

I want to because of their canvas and their hair state. So, someone coming from so far away expecting to have an image in mind from my Instagram, but me not being able to create it is hard. Even though I’m great at what I do, I need the right canvas to work from to be able to create what they want. Another hurdle is people trying to knock you down and speak badly about you from one bad experience, which results in me fearing that I could lose my business. And what are the milestones? There are definitely more milestones than hurdles – there’s a lot of them! One of them would be being sure about what I want to do and having a vision in mind for my clients to help them achieve the look they want. Another one would be self-awareness – being confi-

BEAUTY

EW_032021_P84-85_Nicky Lazou.indd 85

dent in knowing who I am, what I can do and what I can deliver. And also being confident and self-assured to be able to deal with any criticism that comes my way, but realising that that’s their opinion and not mine. What are your future plans for your business? The future plans I have include launching my own products, which I cannot wait for. As I’ve said on Instagram and here, I’m obsessed with hair masks and my own mask has been in process for about three years now, which can bring quality haircare right into your home. I’m hoping this will then lead to launching my own heat tools for home use and producing more tutorials to help people gain more knowledge about hair. This is 'The Wellness Issue' – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? We’re only here for a short time and I think wellness is such an important thing to bring to your life. Obviously, it encompasses your overall health and wellbeing. Wellness to me is to train your mind and yourself to grow from situations and to see good in others. The choices we make about what we put in, on and around bodies are deeply connected to our own wellbeing.

How did you get into the field of nutrition? When I moved into high school, I came across nutrition in science, since then, the topic left me completely fascinated. I studied nutrition and dietetics at Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon, but it’s not an easy process. It takes a few years of demanding classes and a 12-month internship in a hospital and passing a board exam to become a certified clinical dietitian. While it’s been a challenge and a lot of hard work, I’m grateful I chose a domain to work in that I’m truly passionate about. What drives the passion for your career? In the last 11 years of practising dietetics, the best gift that I can is hearing from my patients, “I no longer need my blood pressure medications”, “I can now fit into my jeans”, “you helped me to have a happy and healthy life” – this makes it a rewarding career path. I also love being a dietitian because I am learning every day. I learn things from my clients, other dietitians and other healthcare professionals. The job never gets old because the medical field is constantly changing. We are always learning new things about medicine, the human body and its relationship with food. I truly feel that twenty years from now I will still not be bored doing what I do. I’m always growing as a practitioner and perfecting the art of counselling people on nutrition. What is the difference between a food intolerance and a food allergy? A food allergy is an autoimmune system response when the body mistakes a particular food as a harmful substance. For example, antibodies are released mounting a defence against the food in the body with a release of chemicals like histamine, causing the allergic reaction. A food intolerance is often called a non-allergic food hypersensitivity, which doesn’t involve the immune system and is more common than a food allergy. Let’s refer to food intolerance as the body’s inability to break down and digest the food. Food intolerances are often delayed in their response and trickier to be diagnosed. How can both affect the body? Symptoms of an allergic reaction can manifest in a minor way as rashes, itching, hives, or swelling. In more severe cases people can have breathing difficulties and can lose consciousness, meaning a food allergy can be fatal. While the impact on your body from a food intolerance can be described as nausea, stomach

pain, gas, cramps or bloating, heartburn, diarrhoea and headaches. How common are food allergies and intolerances? Food allergies are present in three per cent of adults. The most common food allergies are nuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts and milk. A food intolerance is much more common, with around 30 per cent of the population suffering from food intolerances. The most common one is a lactose intolerance – around 65 per cent of the Mediterranean population have lactose intolerance. Other types of food intolerances include: fructose found in fruits; histamines substances created in the fermentation process in aged cheeses, processed meat, beer, wine, soy sauce; salicylate which is a type of salt; tartrazine, an artificial food colouring; and some additives such as benzoates, butythyroxynisol (BHA), sulphites and MSG monosodium glutamate. How can you go about diagnosing allergies? To make a diagnosis for a food allergy, your allergist will ask you a detailed history of your symptoms. Get ready to be questioned about the quantity of the food and the onset of the symptom. Accordingly, they will order a blood test or skin prick food allergy test to indicate where your IGEs antibodies are present in your body. IGEs are weapons that your body creates to fight the allergenic food. How can you test for food intolerances? For food intolerances, most of them are found through trials. Before heading to the hospital for a test, you are advised to keep a food diary to record what you’ve been eating and to identify the symptoms associated with a special ingredient. In the case of lactose, the diagnosis is made based on the breath test. Once a lactose intolerance or any food intolerance is diagnosed it is important to start avoiding this food for a specific time of period – It can vary between six to eight weeks. Some find that intolerances are reversible and can be dose-related, meaning that symptoms may occur only when huge quantities are consumed. As for the IgG Blood testing, the science has shown weak evidence; the presence of IgG is likely a normal response and a memory antibody of the immune system to exposure to food. Thus some people have shown improvement in their digestion after restricting the food brought from an IgG blood test By identifying what a person is allergic or intolerant to, how can this affect the overall wellbeing of an individual? Once a person is diagnosed with food allergy/intolerance and appropriate food restrictions were taken, you will start to notice a positive outcome on your general health in a wealth of different areas. This includes: a healthy digestion without abdominal distension, cramps and regulation in bowel movement; a better

BEAUTY

mental clarity and fewer headaches; glowing skin; normalised vitamins status in the body; higher energy levels; improvement in sleeping pattern; optimisation in the weight and empowered sense. What is your advice to those who believe they have food allergies or intolerances? If you’re curious to know more about the food allergies and sensitivities, don’t rush for a Google search – it will get you more than a million hits. Instead, seek the opinion of your medical team; they are the right one to advise you. During your restrictive phase always keep your routine appointments with your dietitian, as a simple restriction in dairy products for instance can lead to cal-

cium, B2 and Vit D deficiencies. Therefore your registered dietitian will help you with the correct food alternatives and can prescribe the needed supplements. And finally, don’t always blame your food for being bloated or waking up with headaches, think of your general lifestyle habits. Bloating can be triggered by the fact that you’ve been stressed and eating too quickly before rushing to your busy day with back to back meetings. Or if you’ve woken up with a headache it could be due to spending most of your days in front of your screen. Further information at Mediclinic.ae

EW_032021_P90-91_Cryotherapy.indd 90

Tell us about your experience with cryotherapy? My career began in the fashion industry, it was essential that I maintained healthy skin and a toned body. Due to over-training and fatigue, I suffered from a severe back injury, so I decided to travel to Australia in search of new remedies. This is how I discovered nitrogen-free cryotherapy, after just three sessions it healed and repaired my back pain. When did you decide you launch your own clinic? It was in October 2018, when we began doing in-depth research into various cryotherapy treatments. The benefits were so profound, that we explored it further and decided to create a studio concept that is focused on cold and light therapies. What has the reaction to your clinic been like? It has been so positive! The feedback from our clients has exceeded our expectations, some achieving immediate results after only one session. Can you talk us through what is cryotherapy? Cryotherapy involves exposing the body to extreme cold, as low as -110°C in a safe, oxygen-enriched chamber. What benefits does cryotherapy have? The benefits are endless. It is the perfect post-

work out therapy, it speeds up recovery time, decreases inflammation and reduces muscle soreness and stiff joints, while burning 500 to 800 calories at the same time. Cryotherapy rejuvenates your skin by boosting your collagen levels. It increases your level of endorphins, elevates your mood, reduces stress and improves sleep patterns. What results can you see from cryotherapy? You will feel immediate results from wholebody cryotherapy, such as reduced muscular pain and notice an improvement in your sleep patterns, however the more regular your sessions are the greater the reward is! From Cryo T-shock your skin looks tighter, brighter and your body more toned and sculpted. Can you talk us through the story behind RESYNC? RESYNC is the fusion of three core components: temperature, healing and optimism. We believe that human preservation can be achieved through cold and light therapies. Our name reflects what we aim to achieve and that is to RESYNC your body back to a balanced and healthy state. What are the different treatments you offer and how to they affect the body? We are also proud to be the first studio in Dubai to offer Endospheres Therapy – this reduces cellulite, aids weight loss and improves facial toning. How often should you do cryotherapy? To achieve all the benefits of cryotherapy, we recommend three sessions per week. For body sculpting and face lifting we recommend 10 sessions over the course of six weeks. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – how does cryotherapy affect your overall wellbeing? Whole-body cryotherapy is designed to preserve and restore your body. Once you try it for the first time you will realise that brave step into -110°C is your first step into your new lifestyle of wellbeing!

Annie Jaffrey, founder of skincare brand Nourished3, talks us through her beauty routine Talk us through your morning routine. I typically get up around 6:30 am as I love time to myself in the morning. After brushing my teeth, I drink some fresh water and then I make warm water with lemon. Hydration first thing in the morning is so essential after being asleep, it not only energizes me, but gets my digestive system going as its beneficial for my skin and health too. I then like to move my body, either by going for a walk, doing Pilates at home or occasionally I also do a workout class. After that I like to either meditate or journal depending on how I feel. I then head into the shower, wash my

face and focus on my skincare routine before getting dressed, making breakfast and getting my day started. How does your evening routine differ? I love having a relaxing shower at the end of the day with a really beautiful, naturally-scented body wash to sooth and ease my mind. I visualise any worries from the day getting washed off my body while instantly relaxing me. I love Epsom salt baths combined with a few drops of essential oils such as lavender or eucalyptus to calm the senses. I then prioritise my evening skincare routine which consists of cleansing, a face mask 1-2 times per week, fol-

lowed by serum and moisturizer. After having dinner, I love making a mint tea, and reading a few pages of whichever book I’m currently loving usually related to self-development or wellness. I find this so calming and therapeutic, as it truly relaxes me before bed, yet also inspires me with creativity and helpful ideas which I can implement in my life. What are your go-to skincare products? A few of my go-to favourites are the Protini Polypeptide Cream by Drunk Elephant, the Universal C Skin Refiner by Beauty Stat, the Clarify & Brighten Face Mask by Nourished3 and the UV-Clear SPF 46 by Elta MD.

Which masks work best? My favourite mask is the one we spent two years creating called the Clarify & Brighten Face Mask by Nourished3 featuring AHAs, BHA, sulfur, vitamin C, niacinamide, zinc and more – it’s the most incredible formula to brighten, exfoliate, hydrate and plump skin naturally. It gives me a gorgeous healthy glow and keeps my skin clear and blemish-free. How would you describe your approach to makeup? I think makeup is a great tool that can be used to enhance your natural beauty. It’s important however, to take care of your skin both from the inside and out, so you

can feel confident and beautiful without it as well. I would describe my personal makeup style as soft, natural and fresh. Which products are perpetually in your makeup bag? A great concealer to brighten under my eyes is the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Ginger shade. I also love a loose setting powder to lock it in place all day to prevent creases. I also like to fill in and define my brow shape as it really frames the eyes. I then curl my lashes and apply mascara to open them up, finish off with some bronzer, a peachy blush, a little glow on the tops of the cheekbones and a rosy soft lip colour.

Let’s talk fragrance. What are you loving at the moment? I am currently loving Jour d’Hermes, it’s fresh, lightweight and uplifting. Talk us through your hair routine? I highlight my hair and use heat styling tools a few times per week, so I really focus on using products to bring back the strength and shine. I love deep conditioning masks once per week and use a purple shampoo every other time I wash my hair to help keep the colour looking fresh and cooled-toned, as otherwise it can lean on the warm side. I also apply a good leave-in heat protectant serum before styling to minimise damage.

The Gut – A Guide When it comes to wellness, the gut is the cornerstone of the overall health and wellbeing of people. However, according to Dr Saya Pareeth and Dr Hafeel Ambalath, the founders of The Healers’ Clinic in Dubai, it’s a topic that is particularly important, yet often ignored. With both having extensive experience in holistic care and Ayurvedic treatments, the clinic’s clear mantra is about healing from the core. “In our 20 years together, we have devised innovative protocols in traditional and integrative medicine and have advised people in this arena,” the cofounders explain. In keeping with the clinic’s holistic health methods, ensuring the root cause of health issues are dealt with rather than just the symptoms, gut health directly reflects this. “Gut health has always been the starting point for age-old health traditions and our practice too, has always been deeply rooted in this concept,” they explain. Dr Pareeth and Dr Ambalath sat down with Emirates Woman to discuss their fiveyear journey with The Healers’ Clinic, what they focus on and the importance of shining a light on gut health. What inspired you to launch The Healers’ Clinic? One of the challenges was to first understand why we are born on this planet and then are given this huge opportunity to be able to serve people. As a medical professional, often we are overawed with the burden and responsibility placed on us. One of the primary reasons to start The Healers’ Clinic was to look beyond an okay life and spread the knowledge of traditional medi-

cine, to lead a holistic life. On another level, the rather small number of facilities offering holistic and integrative care was one of the driving forces behind The Healers’ Clinic. Our primary aim was to fill the gap between individuals or families and an integrative or holistic family-physician. We wanted to make integrative and holistic care, easily accessible to all who needed it. We also aimed to build awareness in individuals as well as families on preventive care rejuvenation, and maintenance of good health, by way of our unique methodologies and practices. And of course, we wanted to see Dubai as a hub of health tourism, where the world got to experience what traditional and alternative medicine can do. What is a holistic approach to health and wellness? “Holistic” refers to “a complete form of healthcare that does not reject conventional medicine. Instead, it considers a comprehensive and individualised picture of health while using safe, effective and appro-

priate options for prevention or healing”. It involves looking at an individual as a whole, to determine the underlying balances that may affect his or her health. Speaking of ourselves – while we function on the ancient philosophy of preventive health care systems, and practice traditional healing – we adapt them and implement them through modern and scientific platforms. We do not restrict ourselves to any one form or method of medical treatment. Incorporating approaches from across the world, we choose a course of treatment best suited to an individual’s needs and tailored to individual lifestyles. This briefly describes the holistic approach we have successfully taken to health and wellness. This also is the beauty of The Healers’ Clinic as we focus on the overall wellbeing of individuals and on strengthening their core health pillars than indulge in superficial quick fixes. Gut health is a big topic of conversation in the health and wellness space at the moment.

Gut health is the foundation of our bodies’ overall wellbeing

F E AT U R E

3/1/21 3:39 PM

Why do you think this has become a focus? The body’s gastrointestinal tract and its functions are the cornerstone of our wellbeing. Numerous studies have shown the connection between our gut health and our immune system, mental health, skin health, endocrine and early points in pathogenesis. Gut health has always been the starting point for age-old health traditions and our practice too has always been deeply rooted in this concept. It is a large part of discussions doing rounds in the health and wellness space because, in simple language, you are talking about a stronger immune system, clearer skin, weight control, hormones, improved state of mind, less bloating, better quality of sleep and improved digestion. How does your gut health affect your overall wellbeing? Our gastrointestinal tract is “a universe and an ecosystem within us”. It is a contained world of complex chemistry and microbes controlled by indefinable energy of intricate movements and messenger sys-

would suggest facilitating the body to do what it actually wants to do. We would also suggest reducing pressure on the gut by simplifying the way one treats oneself – by eating well and in a healthy manner, getting sufficient sleep, exercising regularly and more. Always listen to the body. Watch what you eat. Watch your day, watch your bowels and your energy levels. Most of the learning happens here. As an integrative and holistic care facility, The Healers’ Clinic uses age-old, traditional and time-tested Eastern ways of understanding the gut with tools and investigations made available by modern Western science, such us non-linear health screening. A treatment plan is then designed for an individual. What are the best foods to feed our gut? Vegetables and seasonal fruits are the best. Go slow on grain though. Fish and occasionally, chicken or meat could be a part of your meal plan, but you do not have to consume meat every day. Eating a range of diverse foods that can give rise to new types of bacteria can be beneficial to gut health. Include whole fruits and vegetables that are fibrous and fermented foods like yoghurt, kimchi and sauerkraut. What treatments do you offer to aid in overall gut health? No single form of treatment or medication can replace proper and healthy eating or lifestyle habits. The Healers’ Clinic, which is a centre of excellence in integrative and holistic care, encourages people to start on a journey of detox and rejuvenation, wherein we introduce or reinstate healthy gut habits. We take our learning from world cultures and the ancient Ayurveda to introduce cleansing and strengthening gut-health practices. The experience we have gained through our work in the local community, embracing different health cultures, gives us the confidence to say that prevention of disorders and sustenance of good health can be made possible by respecting traditional wisdom along with the modern and scientific understanding. Good Practice

We talk to some of the most incredible women we know about their philosophy when it comes to wellness LYNDSAY DORAN FOUNDER OF L’COUTURE @lyndsay_doran, @lcoutureofficial

How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? By looking after my body inside and out. I start my day with green juice and vitamins followed by an intense gym workout. I like to take care of my body by eating the right healthy foods and drinking 3 litres of water per day. I have two weekly deep tissue massages per week to help relieve tension and tightness. This helps me both physically and emotionally. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? I recently started practicing warm yoga and meditation and have fallen in love with the practice. I can escape from the normal dayto-day stress while I am in my yoga class. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? Wellness is good mental, physical and emotional health. It is important to get into a routine of making healthy choices daily in order to reduce stress and the risk of illness. One positive thing I feel we will all take away from the pandemic is the importance of your mental and physical wellbeing, and for that to come before everything. It should be a priority for everyone.

MINAL SIYAL

ASMA HILAL LOOTAH

FOUNDER OF THE HUNDRED WELLNESS CENTRE @thehundredwellness How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? Listening to your body and what it needs is invaluable and truly transformational. Physical and mental wellness are intrinsically linked, and we should view them as skills that need to be consistently worked on and developed. I like to start my day by praying, reading my morning verses and listening to my daily affirmations. I pour a sencha green tea before making a plan and focusing on my top priorities. Taking time for myself and drinking my tea is like a form of mindfulness that sets me up for the day ahead. These practices give me a truly positive outlook on life both mentally and emotionally. When we pay attention to what is happening in our minds, our emotional states can become more balanced and as a result, our physical bodies will be healthier. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? Maintaining a consistent approach to my daily practices, routines and influences allows me to consciously

support my overall wellbeing. Supplements are essential health boosters. I take a variety of plant-based non-synthetic ones that are bespoke to my DNA, for my mental and physical needs. Whilst a healthy and nutritionally balanced diet is always imperative, supplements really enhance the nutrient density of your diet. Movement, be it Pilates, strength training or any form of exercise, is very important and has had such an incredible impact on my life, mental health and overall wellbeing. It is so important to be kind and compassionate to oneself, no matter what is happening in our external circumstances. Our inner voice is the most meaningful voice we ever hear. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? I believe that true wellness lies in allowing yourself to do everything in moderation. Wellness is an integrated relationship between every layer of our being, it is made up of every breath, thought, feeling, intention, movement and the food we eat. Wellness is to be aligned with your whole self, and in harmony on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. A lifestyle of wellness creates a positive attitude towards oneself and to others. It gives us the tools to lead a happier and healthier life, as well as the resilience and ability to handle all situations and circumstances that life brings.

FOUNDER OF BEAUTY BINGE @cleanbeautybinge How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? Discipline and consistency are two pillars that I have consciously tried to incorporate for my physical and mental wellbeing. Mindful practices, journaling, setting consistent goals and most importantly making time for physical activity have all contributed towards this mindful journey. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? Self-reflection on behaviour and actions is a fundamental driving factor that empowers my physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Ultimately, I believe we all have the capacity to truly be our own critics as well as the loudest cheerleaders. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? Forgiveness, I believe is a very strong emotion that can significantly impact our health and happiness. MARIAM HOURANI FOUNDER OF RAWKURE @rawkure

How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? In order for me to achieve wellness in my life, I like to maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep me balanced in all aspects. My healthy physical choices include playing volleyball, working out, and cooking nutritious food. My mental choices are meditating and praying, spending time alone and with loved ones, and spending time reading by the beach. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? Cooking is the one practice I perform every day that truly is therapeutic for my mind and soul. This is why I love what I do at Rawkure. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? Wellness is an interactive process of becoming aware of and practicing healthy choices and habits to create a more successful and balanced lifestyle both physically and mentally. Your decisions and choices will impact both your short-term and long-term wellness. So be patient with yourself and make better and not quick decisions, don’t let your mind bully your body, and remember that self-love is the greatest medicine.

SOPHIE MALPASS FOUNDER OF SUPER SUP FIT @supersupfit

How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? Having founded Super SUP Fit – Bespoke & boutique HIIT, Yoga & Pilates workouts on standup paddleboards in swimming pools – when I teach it keeps me active and always makes me happy. Mentally, I love hanging out with my wonderful friends, podcasts, beach strolls and bike rides are my favourite. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? Good music. Whether it be sweet and acoustic or an upbeat track, it is my one-stop wonder for a happy headspace and an instant mood lift. I am addicted to Spotify and nothing brings me more joy than finding new feel-good songs that I can put into playlists and blast out any time of the day. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? For me and what I try to push in my Super SUP Fit classes is that wellness and fitness should be a special you time. To really breathe, smile and splash and that fitness should be enjoyed as a pleasure and not a punishment. Additionally, if you need to tap out and have a few hours to yourself, go for it. Also a good cup of strong English tea really does help!

NORA HAMEIDANI FOUNDER OF BARRE EFFECT @barreeffectdxb

How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? I feel that an important aspect of wellness and health is balance. As a trainer, I work out often and try to vary my workouts between strength/ stretch/cardio, however I listen to my body and take rest days when I need. Mentally I try my best to take time out of each day for myself, my family, and work, and knowing when that designated time is helps me to be present and find enjoyment in each. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? Working out supports my overall wellbeing, and I strive to take three Barre Effect classes each week outside of my teaching. I find the 50 minutes of class is a mental break for my day as barre challenges me both mentally and physically – I see it as a moving meditation. The technique takes focus, and while in class you can’t think about anything else but following the instructor, properly executing the technique, and staying with the music. Physically it is so challenging, it takes mental strength to not just give up when it gets tough. Once the class is over, and endorphins are flowing, I feel lighter both mentally and physically. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? I believe the definition and relevance of wellness is unique for each person. All we can do is try our best, and know that it will never be perfect or like anyone else’s journey. Wellness affects all aspects of our lives, and if one aspect is neglected everything else is set off balance. Making health and wellness a priority in your life sets you up for the greatest opportunity of happiness and success.

DINA ELSHURAFA FOUNDER OF REFORM ATHLETICA @reformathletica How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? I view attention to wellness as an essential part of living. I don’t view attempting to maintain my physical and mental health as a luxury. As Warren Buffet said, “You get the one car and you need to maintain for up to 75 years and beyond.” Our body is that car. The sooner one

RASHI CHOWDHARY CO-FOUNDER OF PROTEIN BAKE SHOP @proteinbakeshop, @rashichowdhary

How do you embody wellness in your life, both physically and mentally? To me wellness is a state of mind. The more present I am, the more deeply I feel in the present moment the more well and aligned I feel. Breath work, less blinking of the eyes, choosing and eating food consciously, running and weight training are some of the ways I keep myself physically and mentally well. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? Practicing mindfulness all through the day through little things like doing my morning rituals, slowing down while I’m having my coffee, water memory which is planting the best intention possible for my healing every time I sip on water are the things that support my purpose and my overall wellbeing. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? Wellness is our birthright. We are all nothing but pure energy or consciousness expressing itself through our bodies. Our body or any illness is the “result” of our thoughts feelings and emotions and not the other way round. When we begin to realise that true power is internal our healing become effortless. Wellness then becomes our way of life.

gets to that realisation, the easier it will be to drop the bad habits and take up the good ones. It is all about creating and maintaining a routine and not allowing your physical (and mental) fitness to be the first thing to be squeezed out of a busy schedule. Prioritising those things that contribute to your wellness should be second nature. What is one practice that supports your overall wellbeing? The creation of ‘fitness as a habit’ (I recommend the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg). Setting aside time for your body and mind is essential to maintain and lead a positive happy life. Now more than ever and because of the effect of the pandemic on us, understanding the needs of our wellness has never been so important. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? Listen to your body and your mind. If you feel tired, run-down or drained, then you probably are. If you feel energized, then you are. We are the sum of our decisions – what we eat, what we do, what we choose and what we prioritise are all decisions directly linked to how our wellness turns out to be. Discipline, habit and commitment are the key factors to keep our wellness in check. Keep a diary, create a solid group of friends to whom you can be accountable and meditate. Do everything in your power to plant the seeds for a healthy body and mind – it is life-changing!

WORDS: OLIVIA MORRIS

Can you talk us through your career? I am a Palestinian finance lawyer based in London who always had a passion for fitness. As my work necessitates being on the road a lot, I was fortunate enough to visit many studios all over the world to keep up my fitness regime. I grew up in Saudi Arabia and spent some time working in the UAE. Whenever I visited Dubai, I always felt that the fitness landscape lacked the high-quality offering that other world capitals had. The adventure started with my pitch to an initial investor and then to one of London’s top trainers over a juice in London. From there, the idea of Reform was born and together we worked hard to bring it to life. For three years, we went on a working holiday world-tour of classes in London, New York, Hong Kong and LA gathering useful experiences and taking the best of each studio in these cities to turn this concept into a reality in the Middle East hub of Dubai. We wanted to create a space in Dubai that is comparable in quality and standard to studios in the fitness capitals of the world. What inspired you to move into the wellness space? Having experienced real results from my regular fitness regime and attendance of classes similar to the Reform Method and TRX Athletica (the two signature classes at RA) at a top London studio, I became fascinated with the fitness industry and started exploring the possibility of creating a fitness space where clients could experience the same ‘high’ and results I experienced. We are almost three years into our journey since launching Reform Athletica and what a journey it has been! We have built a real following among our clients who now share the same passion for our classes as I did before the idea of Reform Athletica came about. It’s rewarding to see that our clients are seeing the benefits and realis-

ing the results of their hard work that they have been putting into their fitness journey. We continue to promote our environmental commitment and sustainability promise by reducing the use of one-time plastic, so much so, that we were verified and received the badge of ‘Oceanic Champion” by Oceanic Global. We have added more signature classes to our schedule to compliment the

initial offering we had and of course, we continue to grow our art collection which is all on display at the studio! How has the brand evolved since opening? The answer to this question can be summarised into three main changes we have witnessed in the fitness industry over the past couple of years. Firstly, the more conscious end-user, the growth of the ‘studio

Rejuvenate & Reform Dina Elshurafa tells us why Reform Athletica is so much more than just a boutique fitness studio

What sets the studio apart from others in Dubai and this region? I have to say that the studio market in Dubai is flourishing and there are some world-class offerings in Dubai and the region so well done to all our fellow studio owners! The recent flurry of studio openings has raised the bar in terms of quality, offering and general level of training in Dubai. Having said that, we do believe that at Reform Athletica we have a distinguishing edge and a unique selling point compared to our rivals. The first is the size of ours being capped at 10 people at full capacity. The second is our plastic-free initiative, being the first studio in Dubai to do so we have successfully managed to create a trend evidenced by other studios following suit. The aim is for us to set a precedent and for these measures to be standardized in the

cused on sustainability in the UAE. We are also turning our attention to mental wellbeing and mental health by preparing to stock various items to help with our drive to focus on the importance of mental health, especially during the current times. In short, we would like to be seen as a place to get fit, healthy, happy and enriched. What have been the hurdles you have experienced in your career? Having a double-career! I am still a practising ambitious lawyer and I love what I do. I also have a studio that needs to be looked after. Managing this isn’t without its challenges especially as I live in London and travel back and forth to Dubai. There are a lot of similarities in what I do between running a business and being a lawyer. Law, at the heart of it, is also a business that needs to be run just as much as the

culture’ and the rise of digital fitness. The increased awareness and attention to fitness has turned a vast majority of people (of all ages and fitness levels) to exercise in a quest to take care of their health. Also, the emergence of the ‘studio culture’ or ‘pay as you use’ model means that people are no longer confined to the one ‘super-gym’ and tied to monthly memberships that worked more for the gym-owner rather than the end-user. What experience do you want your clients to have when visiting Reform Athletica? We want them to feel at home, happy and pleased to be at the studio. This is why we were extremely focused on design and interiors when we set up the studio. Not only does the space need to offer the best quality training, but it needs to offer it in a setting that is both inviting, clean, high quality and homey. We are also very much focused on customer experience and client satisfaction.

fitness industry to reduce plastic consumption and improve the environmental footprint of gyms and studios worldwide. Sustainability is a focus for the brand, how does this contribute to global wellness? The purpose of Reform Athletica’s Sustainability initiative is to stimulate a provocative discussion about how personal wellness is inextricably linked to the social, economic and environmental wellness of our society. We want our clients to understand through adopting their own sustainability efforts, their individual wellbeing can be a source of wellness and is intimately linked to the environment in which they live and contribute to. It is impossible for an individual to be concerned with personal wellness without taking into consideration the wellness of society and the environment. You're so much more than just a Pilates studio, tell us about this? I’m so glad you’ve asked this. Indeed, we are not just a Pilates studio. We offer six signature workouts – TRX Athletica and KettleForm, TRX Sculpt, Microform and the Reform Method and finally Yoga. On the non-training side, we have our sustainability initiative where we try to host events that promote plastic-free living. We don’t sell or stock or use any single-use plastic at our studio. We have partnered up with Oceanic Global to be verified as an Ocean Champion and often run joint events with Azraq, a homegrown organisation fo-

next business. Understanding the fundamentals of how to build and grow a business has certainly been an immense help in my law career and vice versa. And what are the largest milestones? Also having a double-career. I am proud that I am able to do and combine the things I love. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” Confucius once said. It is 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year for me, no days off. What are the future plans for Reform Athletica? Together with my co-founders, setting up a one studio Reform Athletica in Dubai was never the dream. We wanted to give birth to our brand in Dubai, to set the scene, to build our following and establish the foundations for the future. Now that we have built this platform, we are ready to take the next step. We are already looking into our second and third locations and planting the seeds for expansion. However, with COVID-19 still being very much at the forefront of world events, we will have to tread carefully and choose our timing correctly. However, watch this space! This is 'The Wellness Issue' – what is your philosophy when it comes to wellness? I am a great believer in the importance of mental wellbeing as much as physical wellbeing which go hand in hand. You cannot be a fit and healthy person if your mind and mental wellness is not in the right place.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba have both successfully forged a second career in the wellness space and become leading figures in the industry

GWYNETH PALTROW & GOOP WHERE IT STARTED Back in September 2008, with over two decades of acting under her belt alongside an Oscar and two Golden Globes, Gwyneth Paltrow launched goop which began as a lifestyle newsletter, encouraging readers to “nourish the inner aspect”. With the content focus from Paltrow’s end, goop expanded into e-commerce making the brand an overall wellness and lifestyle hub for women.

HOW IT’S GOING With this year marking goop’s 13th anniversary, the brand is now an all-encompassing hub launching pop-up shops, hosting wellness summits, launching a print magazine, hosting a podcast and part-taking in a docuseries for Netflix entitled The Goop Lab. As for its e-commerce venture, goop now houses some incredible hero brands including Dr. Barbara Sturm, Grown Alchemist, Mara Hoffman, Adidas, Joseph and more. Along the way, Paltrow and goop have been met with some controversy with accusations of promoting “pseudo-science” with outlandish claims and being “out of touch”. Regardless, it’s gotten people talking and goop has become an incredible hub for women to converse and put their wellbeing at the forefront.

THE FUTURE As for what’s next for goop, Paltrow has admitted the pandemic turned things on its head. In an interview with Bruce Bozzi on Radio Andy on Sirius XM 102 she explained that in 2020 all spend stopped for the company. However, in turn, goop found its content and e-commerce platforms grew expo-

nentially. “People come to us for the content and experience,” she said. “What we need to be focusing on is converting the people that already come [to the brand] and make them into a profitable customer.”

JESSICA ALBA & THE HONEST COMPANY WHERE IT STARTED After giving birth to her first child in 2008, actress Jessica Alba was inspired to explore alternative products which were free of harsh petrochemicals and synthetic fragrances. Realising there was a gap in the market, she co-founded The Honest Company with business partner Christopher Gavigan in 2012 with the brand selling a range of household goods, baby products and body care products. One year after launching the brand, Alba went on to release her book The

F E AT U R E

EW_032021_P104-105_Goop & Honest.indd 105

Honest Life which touched upon her experiences living a sustainable, eco-friendly and natural life with her family.

HOW IT’S GOING From the start, the company’s main aim has been to promote ethical consumerism. Nearly nine years later, The Honest Company continues to sell clean and toxic-free household goods, baby products and body care products, as well as cleaning products, masks and baby clothes. A further expansion for the brand came about in 2015, three years after it first launched, into the beauty space. Honest Beauty promotes clean beauty, with their skincare and makeup products being 100 per cent cruelty-free.

THE FUTURE After the launch of its beauty arm in 2015, The Honest Company attained unicorn status being valued at over $1 billion. However, a mere two years later it dipped below the unicorn value in 2017. With a change of CEO occurring in 2018 and a resurgence of interest in the brand amidst the pandemic, the tide appears to be turning for The Honest Company.

WORDS: AMY SESSIONS

What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine? I usually wake up between 5:30-6:30 am depending on the day, its coffee and out the door to the activity of the day! I don’t give myself time to procrastinate; I love to train in the morning as it fuels my high energy and strong mindset for the day, especially at this time of the year when I run a lot and spend most of my mornings outdoors by the beach or around the city. It also ensures I’m tired enough by nightfall and helps to regulate my sleep pattern. What are the most important things to track when it comes to health and overall wellness? Movement is one of the most important things to track. We live in a fast-paced city with easy accessibility to most things and people here don’t move enough. I love tracking movement, heart rate and sleep, which is one of the most important parts of recovery and performance! How do you track your health on a daily basis? I track how many kilometres I’ve run and if I’m taking the day off exercise I ensure I get at least 10,000 steps a day. I also love to challenge my friends through community features on my Apple Watch to ensure they are also moving. I track my food and water intake because it’s so easy to under hydrate or over consume when everything is so accessible and I love to track my sleep! This also helps me understand how to schedule my day and holds me accountable; I won’t settle for anything less than 7 hours and if I’m pressured to sleep less due to obligations I make sure to train with less intensity to avoid injuries. How has tracking this allowed you to optimize your health by changing your habits? Definitely learning to create and prioritize a sleep routine has been the biggest shift I’ve had which helps me perform and recover better. Sleep is also key to wellness – is this something you monitor and what have you noticed? So many people suffer from insomnia nowadays, which has been shown to be attributed to too much screen time and over stimulating the

The modern way to track your health is data driven with the latest in tech. Apple is always a step ahead of the game says Dr Tamara Ghazi, Founder of Diversified Integrated Sports Clinic

sion inducing injuries and chronic pain. What advice would you give to your younger self, starting out? Live more in the now, stop worrying about what people think and focus on what makes you happy. I also wish I started my health journey when I was much younger, rather than when I was in my mid 20s. It would have definitely balanced and grounded me a lot more. I’ve recently taken up more adrenaline inducing sports and as an adult you have more fear which can be good but also slows down your progression! Life happens outside your comfort zone. Which piece of tech is your daily go-to when it comes to health optimization? My go-to daily tech would have to be my Apple Watch. It wasn’t always the case, but over time I kept discovering new and convenient features that made me appreciate it more. For starters, it’s my health, fitness, and wellness partner. It lets me keep track of my goals and pushes me to improve them with time. Being within the health and fitness industry, I also love the fact that people within my network can share their workout progress with me and vice versa. That can be very motivating. And it’s very practical, it keeps me connected while I run through my busy work schedule without losing focus from my patients. This issue is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is wellness to you? To me wellness is holistic; knowing what works for your best interest and your best performance in every aspect of your life from your job to the gym, to your social structure. It’s finding your balance, between your personal life, your physical and mental health, being able to catch yourself when you’re not at your optimal state and recognizing what you need to bring yourself back to homeostasis. Wellness is finding yourself and your happiness in this beautiful journey of life.

brain through blue light. Of course, sleep is a crucial factor in maintaining good health and for optimum recovery and performance. I tend to use the Wind Down feature on my iPhone and Apple Watch to help me stick to my sleep goals every night. When it’s getting close to my bedtime, my iPhone automatically reduces the distractions and eye strain linked to the device and enables Do Not Disturb. It’s all about habit and creating routine, and I found this feature to be especially useful to get me to relax and prepare myself for a good night’s sleep. For people interested in understanding their sleep better, I would advise the use of an Apple Watch and ‘Sleep’ app which give you access to key metrics including Time in Bed, Time Asleep, and Heart Rate. What has been the biggest hurdle since launching Diversified Integrated Sports Clinic and how did you overcome it? Managing people and finding the right team who share the same work ethic, integrity and vision. It’s in my nature to make people happy, but I’ve learnt that it cannot come at the expense of one’s own happiness and peace of mind. My work is my life, and it’s a big part of who I am, but I really focus on trying to achieve a work/life balance, finding my purpose and happiness outside of work, which I’ve found in an active and healthy living. It allows me to be a role model to my team and my patients. What health issues do you see most commonly at the clinic? We treat musculoskeletal pain, so a lot of neck and back pain due to lack of movement, poor posture and ergonomics or over chronic repetitive loading of certain joints due to lack of movement variation. Contrary to what our name might suggest, we see more sedentary lifestyle related injuries in the working and ageing population. We also see a lot of stress-related ten-

WORDS: SARAH JOSEPH

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? I am an early bird and reach the office by 7am after completing my morning workout. I start by looking into the previous day’s reports, online reviews received through the various channels, going through the arrivals of the three properties of Sharjah Collection, as well as getting an insight into any event that is taking place. I make a tour of the property I am present at, whether it is Kingfisher, Al Faya or Al Badayer Retreat, and then brief the team on the day ahead. What inspired the creation of this property? When Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) decided to create Al Faya Retreat - history and heritage were two main points of consideration. The property is a complex of historical buildings, sitting on the red sands at the foot of Mount Alvaah in the Emirate of Sharjah, while it is also located in proximity of the Mleiha archeological centre which displays the rich history of the region that was first inhabited by humans around 130,000 years ago. The pair of stone buildings originally built half a century ago, which once housed a clinic and a grocery shop, has been renovated into a contemporary boutique retreat and restaurant, and on the premises is one of the UAE’s first petroleum pumps. With your clients visiting from around the globe, how do you ensure a bespoke experience for each stay? Guests can embark on a wellness journey as they venture through the herbal and Himalayan salt rooms, before heading to the tropical walk where a range of different shower pressures, lights and noises allow for a completely immersive experience. Promoting both physical and mental health, the rooms aid in reducing inflammations, helping those with respiratory issues, and assists the improvement of overall wellbeing. Al Faya also offers a variety of activities such as archery, trekking, cycling as well as cultural activities arranged

by a visit to Mleiha Archeological Center, Jebel Buhais Archeological Center and the 4x4 museum nearby. How has the hospitality industry evolved in the last 12 months? Although 2020 was a challenging year for everyone, it marked a significant shift in the behaviour of domestic and international tourists, who primarily focus on properties that offer social distancing, a smaller number of guest and sanitisation measures alongside unique experiences that allow them to try something new. What are the design elements that allow the property to stand out? With just five rooms, Al Faya Retreat’s contemporary feel masterfully combines aspects of originality, blended together with luxe modernity. Bedrooms feature a skylight for stargazing at night with a fire pit primed for recapping the day’s many adventures. Surrounded by the commanding presence of the desert and the nature that calls it home, Al Faya Retreat celebrates its location ensuring that its practices are eco-friendly and that its guests fully love this once in a lifetime experience. The Mlieha region was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, tell us about this? Mleiha is home to a number of significant sites, including Bronze Age tombs, historical caves and pre-Islamic forts. A wealth of fascinating artefacts, from camel skeletons to pottery and iron tools have been discovered here, with many on display in the outstanding Mleiha Archaeological Centre. The surrounding area is a beautiful location for a desert camp on soft dunes and the perfect haven to spend a night under the glittering stars. You have a spa on location – how do you approach wellness? Privately. The spa is a private sanctuary only available to in-house guests, the spa at Al Faya Retreat offers a distinct experience. Inspired by the landscape that surrounds it, its tranquil atmosphere allows for complete relaxation. Located in its own building, privacy is key with views gazing towards the desert while being unique to the region, the spa is based on the element of salt. How do you approach client retention and client engagement? Our aim is to always offer our guests a personalised service that starts from the reservation process, through the pre-arrival to stay and post departure. We do our best to capture all the preferences and details of our guests to provide them with a tailormade experience that makes their stay memorable and distinguished. This is ‘The Wellness Issue’, what is wellness to you and how do you support achieving this personally? From my perspective, wellness is being well from all aspects which mainly include the mind and body. I do encourage people to eat with balance and focus on activities that enhance their body and mind performance, which I constantly apply myself.

Wings of Wellness

We spoke to Barbara Szep, Wellness Ambassador for Etihad Airways, who explains the steps taken to ensure healthy travel in these times

120 emirateswoman.com

What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine? I believe hydration is the most important aspect to start a day. I have one large glass of water and take my daily supplements. I am a big coffee lover, so I can’t start my day properly without having a freshly brewed coffee. What are the most important things to track when it comes to health and overall wellness? For me personally, maintaining a healthy BMI and a balanced diet are two of the most important aspects. How do you track your health on a daily basis? As a flight attendant, my schedule can be challenging so I do my best to keep my regular sleep pattern, exercise on a regular basis and have a balanced diet. Sleep is key to wellness – how do you ensure a good night’s rest on board during these times in terms of sanitisation? Etihad has high hygiene standards which means our aircraft are deep cleaned after every flight. In addition, high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters on the aircraft are effective in capturing more than 99 per cent of airborne microbes which makes for a more restful sleep. We are also provided with individually sealed and packed blankets and pillows on board. What does a Wellness Ambassador do? As Wellness Ambassadors, we provide essential travel health information and care so guests can fly with greater peace of mind. We reassure flyers they are in safe hands. We conduct a Wellness Passenger Announcement before the flight, give additional care to the elderly, answer questions and share information on Etihad Wellness – talking about our initiatives regarding hygiene and how Etihad’s aircrafts are sanitised before and after every flight. The safety, health, and wellbeing of our guests will always be Etihad’s paramount priority, and we are doing everything we can to protect our guests and help them feel safe. Etihad’s Wellness Ambassadors are also at Abu Dhabi International Airport providing travellers with support at every stage of their journey until they board their flight; from check-in to security, immigration, the retail areas, lounges and boarding, so that guests can fly with added comfort, security and confidence. What is it about this role that appeals to you? I engage with elderly guests, families and reassure any nervous flyers during COVID-19. I enjoy putting their minds at ease and making guests feel safe and comfortable on board.

What is it currently like to fly in your role? It is challenging but when you see how effective and crucial our job is to the universal community, I am glad to be involved and even volunteered to be part of a courageous army of frontlines. What has been the biggest hurdle since launching the Wellness Ambassador programme and how did you overcome this? The most challenging part was getting used to wearing a face mask because it can feel like a barrier between you and the guest. We have introduced a number of these protocols and procedures which support safety including 100% PCR testing for all guests prior to departure. What advice would you give to your younger self, starting out? Being lucky enough to have support from my family, I was able to take a chance and follow my dream. I would

advise the younger generation not to be afraid, to take risks and follow the same. Which piece of tech is your daily go-to when it comes to health optimisation? That would have to be my smart watch. It allows me to keep track of my daily steps, the number of calories I burn and monitors my heart rate while exercising. This issue is ‘The Wellness Issue’ – what is wellness to you? Wellness is a lifestyle and without discipline we cannot reach our goals. My discipline is to tone my body and take care of my overall health. I believe that a body is like any other project in life, to build and shape it, you need a plan. The key to wellness and health does not refer only to your physical wellbeing, but it is just as important to focus on mental health as well.
