he concept of the Diamond has long played a pivotal role in defining the spirit of Jimmy Choo; as a symbol of incomparable beauty and strength that is formed over time, in many ways the Diamond even serves as an emblem for the brand itself. “The Diamond is a metaphor I often use to describe Jimmy Choo. Not only does it represent the multi-

lection, Midnight Sun, which is ever more bold and creative. During Fashion Week, the Artistic Director unveiled 140 unique High Jewelry pieces, showcasing the exceptional expertise of her Parisian workshops to a backdrop of the trendiest disco vibes. The evening was a rendez-vous for many famous celebrities, including Cher, Nicola Coughlan, Kelly Rowland, Ed Westwick, Sara Sampaio, Taraji P. Henson and Ester Expósito, who were interviewed by the incredible host Ashley Graham during a so-

cial media livestream. A parade of 30 daring and hypnotic silhouettes walked the runway including Alton Mason, Carla Bruni, Taylor Hill, Adut Akech and Grace Elizabeth, who took to the catwalk wearing a Solar Diva set with a radiant yellow diamond weighing almost 35 carats, one of the largest stones ever set since the beginnings of Messika’s High Jewelry. The exciting show was rounded off by Ava Max’s performance of her unmissable tracks ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and ‘Kings & Queens’.

n a glittering soirée that unfolded under the starry Dubai night, Bulgari unveiled the opulent “Serpenti Factory” and the spellbinding “75 Years of Infinite Tales” exhibition. The event, held at DIFC in Dubai, transported guests to a world where luxury intertwined seamlessly with artistic brilliance. The Serpenti Factory in Dubai stands as a cultural bridge, celebrating the essence of Middle Eastern and Italian heritage. Beyond its status as a haven for emerging artists, it serves as a magnificent canvas for the talents of local artists. Bulgari, with profound admiration for the Middle East’s cultural tapestry and vibrant art scene, embraced a collaboration with a select group of exceptionally gifted local artists. These artistic luminaries, Azza Al Qubaisi, Dr Azra Khamissa, and Dr Afra Atiq, embarked on a creative journey inspired by the rich heritage and unique attributes of the Serpenti emblem. Their artistic interpretations breathed fresh life into this iconic symbol. The exclusive preview of this spectacular event was graced by 300 distinguished guests, including Bulgari’s regional brand ambassadors: Lojain Omran, Raya Abirached, Huda Al Mufti, and Bassel Khaiat. Jean-Christophe Babin, the CEO of Bulgari Group, marked the exhibition’s opening with a profound reflection on the enduring legacy of Serpenti. He declared, “For 75 years, the emblematic Serpenti symbol has embodied Bulgari’s daring and contemporary design vision. Rooted in the era of Cleopatra, it has evolved into the protagonist of an enchanting narrative that persists today, marked by creativity, impeccable craftsmanship, and a modern spirit. It has stood alongside the women who have adorned it, enhancing their individuality. We are delighted to celebrate this beloved icon with the Serpenti Factory in Dubai, marking the Middle East’s first exhibition of its kind.”

WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI

What inspired you to launch NAIA? Inspired by the accessibility to natural gemstones and excellent craftsmanship in Dubai, we wanted to create jewellery that defies the usual rigidity of fine jewellery: pieces that you can be playful with, that you never have to take off (whether you’re going to the gym or a party) and can customize to suit your own preferences. How would you describe the brand’s aesthetic and what are its core values? Playful, while being practical and refined; empowering, thoughtful and fun. How do you approach incorporating colour into your designs and how do you strike the

right balance of fun yet still feel luxurious? We’re guided by the beautiful gemstones we are able to source. We always try to emphasize nature’s beauty in our designs by allowing nature to lead the design process. This usually leads to colourful pieces that feel more whimsical and fun. We also only use natural gemstones (which includes diamonds) and 18k gold, resulting in luxurious forever pieces. Where do you source your materials from and how hard was it to refine this process? We’re quite lucky being based in Dubai because the city spoils us with options. All our suppliers and manufacturers are in Dubai, and we've stayed local so that we can always ensure quality in our designs. Which pieces have been most popular to date and was this as you predicted? Our most popular piece is our no piercing ear cuff “jealous”, and we definitely did not predict it would take off the way it did! It was created as a birthday gift for a friend who loves ear cuffs, but constantly takes them off because they were always too tight or too loose.

EW_112023_P72-73_NAIA Gems.indd 73

We strived to create the perfect fit for an ear cuff and included it in our collection as an afterthought. Little did we know that people would love it as much as she did! This is The Refinement Issue — what does refinement mean to you and how do you implement it for yourself? Refinement to us is focused and deliberate quality and elegance. We refine by always reminding ourselves of the end pieces we are trying to create - functional, fine jewellery that is both playful and elegant.

ODEEM founder Fatma Al Otaiba and jewellery designer Alia Bin Omair join forces for a meaningful collaboration inspired by the Emirati founders’ creativity and refined spirit

When did you first conceptualize this collaboration, and what was the inspiration behind it? FAO: I reached out to Alia, because I fell in love with her designs and wanted to create a piece that has elements rooted and inspired by our culture, her use of natural textures is what I was drawn to. ABO: Fatma invited me to collaborate on a bag she designed to design the handle, and we explored the idea of elevating one of my collections. You’re both creatives on your own merit. How did you go about refining the creative process for this collaboration? FAO: We worked together with ease, loved the development process. ABO: We always felt comfortable talking about our ideas, which made it easy for us to work together. What are the biggest style differences and similarities between your brands? FAO: Alia’s designs are more organic, and she draws a lot of inspiration from our heritage with a refined execution, whereas my pieces are more classic and timeless. Working with her made me want to explore developing bags with unique hardware, a blend of both styles. ABO: I believe each of us has a distinct style, yet our ability to complement each other’s creations has been the driving force behind the success of this collaboration. Your designs are deeply connected to culture and nature in terms of influence — how did you incorporate your signature techniques in each piece? FAO: I wanted to develop the bag with Alia to create a piece that had cultural influence... I was inspired by her style. ABO: I continue to incorporate consistent textures and forms when creating the hardware. What have you learned about each other worlds through this collaboration? FAO: Collaborating with Alia made me excited about developing accessories for my brand with her help. ABO: Through our collaboration, I’ve had the opportunity to discover the world of bag design. It’s been fascinating to understand the attention to detail, functionality, and material selection that goes into creating a bag. How do you want the pieces from this collection to be worn? ABO: I envision our collaboration bag to be worn by a sophisticated woman who appreciates beauty and wants to be unique with her looks.

This is The Refinement Issue – what does refinement mean to you and how do you implement it for yourself? ABO: As a jewellery designer, refinement means achieving a balance between aesthetic, elegance and a high level of craftsmanship. It’s about creating pieces that show sophistication and timelessness, paying attention to every intricate detail, and using high-quality materials.

Vibrating Higher How do you use Reiki on the products? My entire range is energised with the positive energy of Reiki. Being a Reiki master, I am able to personally charge my products with this healing energy. I begin by setting an intention to heal and balance, I then start vibrationally sending the healing through my palms across all my products which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. I then actively seal this energy and it becomes ready to be enjoyed by you all. I do this practise as our raw material leaves our warehouse to our factory and then upon receiving the packaged goods. Doing this ensures that the intent to heal is there right from the beginning. As a trained Reiki master – how important is it to balance your chakras? I cannot stress how important it is to balance your chakras at least once a week, unless you are going through a stressful situation which might require you to do it a bit more. Getting caught up in daily stresses can take a toll on all of us – balancing your chakras will bring harmony, calm, help you overcome daily challenges but more importantly bring positivity. The Kansa Wand is a unique beauty tool – can you expand on how this is used? The sacred metal (copper + tin) that makes up the kansa wand has been part of Ayurveda for over 5,000 years, dating back to the bronze age. A Refined Taste

Drink Dry is the region’s first premium online nonalcoholic beverages marketplace. With a growing thirst for zero-alcohol alternatives on the rise, Founder Erika Doyle talks about delivering an elevated experience and championing a conscious mindset What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? My mornings are a beautiful blend of serenity and chaos. With three young girls to get ready for school, it’s all hands on deck. I start my day a good hour ahead of everyone else in the household. I have discovered a passion for running in the last two years and so at least three times per week, I put my trainers on and I go on an hour-long run around the community. This is my me-time. The time after the kids wake up involves a whirlwind of breakfast prep, helping my daughters get dressed, and ensuring everyone is set for the day. Amidst the hustle, I make it a point to take a few moments for meditation or mindfulness practice. This practice allows me to ground myself and find a sense of calm, which is essential for tackling the day ahead. Drink Dry is the GCC’s first online premium non-alcoholic beverages marketplace. What was the catalyst for launching this? My journey with Drink Dry was driven by a passion for health and wellbeing. Almost four years ago, I recognised a significant gap in the market for high-quality, nonalcoholic beverage options. The inspiration to launch Drink Dry was rooted in my belief that people should have convenient access to these options and most importantly, they should have a choice to opt for 0.0% drinks when they wanted. Despite the skepticism and underestimation I faced as an entrepreneur in this sector, my determination only grew stronger. I was committed to proving the potential of this category and providing a platform for mindful choices in beverages. Can you expand on how the brand has grown and do you think the timing of launching has aligned with an interest in this in terms of wellness? The growth of the non-alcoholic drinks category globally has been remarkable, and I’m truly proud to have played a part in this movement here in the region. In return, Drink Dry has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception almost four years ago. The timing of Drink Dry’s launch couldn’t have been more opportune. We’ve observed a global shift toward wellness, moderation, and conscious consumption. People are increasingly seeking alternatives that align with their health and lifestyle choices. Our platform caters to this growing demand, offering a diverse range of non-alcoholic options that resonate with the increasing interest in wellness. In the first year of being operational, we successfully ventured into the wholesale distribution of our products and now our exclusive brands are available in over 350 venues and retail stores across the GCC. We are a team of 15 experienced professionals.

You champion a ‘sober curious’ mindset. How does it feel to be leading such a lifestyle and has your view of yourself changed? Embracing and championing a ‘sober curious’ lifestyle has been transformative for me. It has deepened my awareness of both my physical and emotional wellbeing. Personally, it has reinforced my commitment to living in alignment with my values. Through Drink Dry, I aim to empower individuals to make conscious choices that enrich their wellbeing. Being a proponent of the sober curious mindset isn’t about deprivation; it’s about embracing a more fulfilling and holistic life. I see this role as a real privilege and take the responsibility seriously. What are the greatest challenges you’ve faced to date and how did you overcome them? Entrepreneurship presents its unique set of challenges and one of the most significant hurdles I faced was the initial underestimation by industry leaders. Being taken seriously as a woman with no previous business experience in this industry required unwavering selfbelief and determination. I used the skepticism as motivation to prove the potential of the nonalcoholic drinks market. Additionally, navigating the logistics of an online marketplace in the GCC, with its unique dynamics, posed its own challenges. This called for adaptability, collaboration, and persistent problem-solving. How do you constantly refine and innovate as a business? Continuous refinement and innovation are integral to our strategy. We engage actively with our customers, gathering their feedback and insights to understand their evolving preferences. This, in turn, informs our product selection and the user experience on our platform. We also stay attuned to market trends, enabling us to introduce new and exciting options that align with our vision for a healthier and more mindful future. The 0.0% drinks category is forever changing and evolving, and we must do the same at Drink Dry to stay the leading force in the region. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you refined your life/what is refinement to you? To me, refinement is an ongoing journey of selfimprovement and personal growth, whether we are talking about our personal lives or professional ones. It involves continuous learning and adapting to life’s evolving demands. Personally, it’s about striving for a more balanced existence, where I align my values and priorities. My journey has led to a deeper appreciation for wellness and a heightened awareness of the significance of balance in both my personal and professional life. I also have to be aware that my priorities change from time to time and have to be quick to adapt to that too.

three core values: craftsmanship, sustainability, and unparalleled comfort. However, achieving the perfect balance between these three pillars was no small feat. Can you tell us about you latest weighted blankets and how they support achieving restorative rest? Our new collection of hand-knitted weighted blankets has a special story behind it. It’s a tribute to women’s empowerment. When the pandemic brought economic uncertainty and job loss, we found a group of women with remarkable weaving skills who were determined to support their families. It’s an incredible way to appreciate the passion and expertise that goes into every piece. What are the benefits of a weighted blanket? The secret behind the magic of weighted blankets lies in the concept of “Deep Pressure Therapy”. It’s like a gentle, even pressure hugging your body, mimicking the comfort of a warm embrace. along with a cool, dark, and quiet room, create the ideal sleep setting. Relaxation: Engaging in calming activities before bedtime, such as reading, meditation, or a warm bath, prepares your body for sleep. Limiting Stimulants: Avoiding caffeine, nicotine, and heavy meals close to bedtime prevents sleep disruptions. Digital Detox: Reducing screen exposure before bed is crucial as the blue light emitted can interfere with your sleep-wake cycle. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can pro-

mote better sleep but avoid vigorous workouts close to bedtime. Manage Stress: Stress and anxiety can disrupt sleep. Practising relaxation techniques or stress management can be helpful. Diet: A light, healthy snack before bed can be beneficial, but steer clear of heavy or spicy foods that may cause discomfort. Limiting Alcohol: While alcohol may help you fall asleep, it can disrupt sleep quality, so consume it in moderation. Sunlight Exposure: Natural light exposure during the day helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Limiting Naps: Long or late-day naps can interfere with nighttime sleep, so keep them short and early. Bedtime Routine: A consistent pre-sleep routine signals your body that it’s time to wind down. Avoid Clock-Watching: Constantly checking the clock can increase stress and make it harder to fall asleep. Sleep-Enhancing Tools: Techniques like weighted blankets, white noise machines, or sleep masks can assist in creating a conducive sleep environment. What does your evening routine consist of? My pre-bedtime routine is a carefully designed sequence of activities that helps me unwind and prepare my body and mind for a peaceful night’s sleep. It’s a blend of relaxation, self-care, and creating the perfect sleep environment. I start by disconnecting from screens at least an hour before bedtime, making sure there are no phones, tablets, or computers around. A warm and soothing bath is my go-to relaxation ritual. I find journaling to be an enriching practice that allows me to reflect on the day’s activities and process my thoughts and feelings before settling in for the night. My husband and I share about 30-40 minutes of reading together, which relaxes us and sets the stage for a restful night’s sleep. Lastly, I do a final check to ensure everything is in order and all doors are locked, so my mind can be at ease, allowing me to drift into a serene slumber. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you refined your life/what is refinement to you? Refinement, to me, is an ongoing process of self-improvement. It’s about learning new things, enhancing my skills, and becoming a kinder person to others. Life offers numerous opportunities for improvement, and that’s what refinement means to me – making those little things better and continuously striving to become a better version of myself each day.

AM TO PM BEAUTY Tia Lineker, Dubai-based content creator, shares her morning-to-evening beauty routine Talk us through your morning beauty routine. My morning beauty routine consists of washing my face with Caudalie Vinopure Pore Purifying Gel Cleanser followed by Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum and Kiehl’s Ultra-Light Daily UV Defense Sunscreen to protect my skin from the sun and UV exposure. And how about your evening beauty routine? My evening beauty routine consists mainly of Caudalie, if I have worn makeup in the day, I will remove this first with the Caudalie Vinoclean Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil

and then follow with the Caudalie Vinopure Pore Purifying Gel Cleanser. My absolute favourite product in my skincare routine is the Caudalie The Rich Cream Premier Cru, it’s a dream! I apply this every evening. What are your go-to skincare products? I really love the Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment – it has become a go-to after I do my skincare and before bed. How would you describe your approach to makeup? My approach to makeup is to keep it natural and glowy, creating the perfect base is always key.

What can always be found in your makeup bag? In my makeup bag, you will always find the Dior Forever Glow Veil Radiance Primer, it’s the perfect product to get that glowy base. I’m also a huge fan of the Hermès Plein Air Complexion Balm (my favourite tinted moisturiser). Let’s talk fragrance. What are you loving at the moment? In regards to fragrance, I am a cologne kind of girl. I love fresh scents and nothing too feminine… I always find myself in the men’s section when it comes to fragrances, I really love Celine Cologne

I don’t have a huge selection when it comes to fragrances as I know what I like and I buy them over and over again, so normally I just alternate between them. Talk us through your hair routine. My hair has had a real journey over the years, since I started to take more care of it and not use much heat on it, it has really improved. I get it cut often and I love blunt ends! I

only colour my hair every nine months as I have balayage and I love the grownout look! I swear by the Dyson Airwrap. What is the most unusual item in your makeup bag? The most unusual item in my makeup bag is probably that I have five to six different lip liners. I go through stages, some days I want a more nudebrown tone and others I want a deeper tone. I couldn’t say my favourite as I have a few. REFY lipliner in shade ‘Taupe’ is up there along with Caia Cosmetics Lip Pencil in shade ‘Bianca’.

What do you do to decompress after a long day? To decompress after a long day, I will do my skincare, get in some fresh pyjamas and get in bed with a cup of tea! That’s my little slice of heaven. This is The Refinement Issue – how do you implement a refined approach to beauty? To implement a refined approach to beauty I don’t like to overdo my skin with too many products and will only try something if I feel like my skin needs a change, I think it’s important to stick to a routine to see the benefits.

his year the event returned with the aim to shine a light on and celebrate the outstanding achievements of women in their industries who live by the values we at Emirates Woman align ourselves with – integrity, authenticity, excellence, and grit. We would like to extend our thanks to Sabra Thani, Director of Corporate Communications for Dubai Women Establishment, who was the MC of the evening and Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District, who gave an inspirational keynote speech. In a time when there is a perpetually growing focus on social media followings,

we want to also remember the importance of values and personal connection. Over the last four years we have built on the 40-year heritage of Emirates Woman, cemented long standing relationships and called upon existing ones to truly build a brand that is dedicated to championing and supporting the incredible women of the region and beyond. Emirates Woman is the friend who champions you in a room where you are not, meaning we support those who often have too much integrity to shout about themselves. We would like to extend our thanks to our sponsors for their support in making the evening possible and to our wider team of colleagues whose efforts resulted in an exceptional evening.

WORDS: AMY SESSIONS

Another Level What does the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? After your first TM session of the day, you’ll feel enthused and energised and actively looking forward to a super-productive day. There is a real joy that comes from being relaxed, happy, focused, and productive first thing in the morning and TM is key to achieving this. What is Transcendental Meditation? Transcendental Meditation (TM) is the simplest and most effortless form of meditation. It uses only the natural tendency of the mind to move effortlessly in the direction of more and more contentment. This means that no control, effort, or concentration is required. When you learn TM, you are learning the timeless technique of effortless transcending – of how to allow the mind access to the ocean of consciousness beyond the busy waves of surface-level mental activity. TM is taught by fully trained experts who will teach you how to dive deep within yourself to experience and harness the fabulous breadth and depth of our creative minds. How often should it be practised? The great advantage of TM is that we only need to practise it twice a day, morning, and evening, and for only 20 minutes a session, but the benefits will be long-lasting and be felt for the rest of the day, and then with regular practise, the benefits continue to compound and develop over your lifetime. What are the key benefits both in terms of mind and body? People who practise TM find that they have greater mental clarity and broadened comprehension. Focus and concentration levels are higher and there is a greater ability to draw on deeper re-

112 emirateswoman.com

serves of intelligence and creativity, making problem-solving and innovative thinking much stronger. TM produces unique levels of metabolic rest, allowing residual fatigue and deep-rooted stresses to be dissolved naturally, resulting in greater calm and inner serenity. The result is that we achieve more, more successfully with less negative consequences like burnout and anxiety. All TM’s benefits have been scientifically validated in over 390 peer-reviewed studies. Are there any indications of when you are successfully activating this practise — what can signify this? There are two main indicators. Firstly, the performance itself is easy, relaxed, and enjoyable. Those who practise TM look forward to their sessions because there are no preset demands to achieve outcomes. They can simply relax into it and enjoy it! The second indicator comes in the spontaneous growth of benefits across a wide spectrum of markers in cognitive development, mental health and in physical and emotional wellness. Will you feel sleepy afterwards? TM wakes up the mind and body, giving much greater energy and momentum. By providing deep rejuvenating rest, TM recharges depleted reserves, resulting in greater mental and physical resources at our disposal so that we can achieve our goals with less effort. How does this differ from other meditation practises? There are so many meditation practises out there and as a result, many people who come to learn TM have already tried another form of meditation. A very common remark of new TM-meditators is just how much simpler and fulfilling TM

LIFESTYLE

is to practise compared to other practised techniques. The reasons generally given are the absence of focus, concentration, and outcome-emphasis in TM. Why is it important to be guided by a certified Transcendental Meditation teacher and how long is the course of instruction? When someone learns TM, they are learning a valuable life-skill. Everyone owes it to themselves to learn from a properly qualified, accredited teacher, as this guarantees you’ll benefit from correct training from an expert and the advantage of a lifetime’s worth of support across more than 100 countries worldwide. The instruction course

IMAGE: GETTY IMAGES

We discuss Transcendental Meditation and its ability to elevate mind, body and spirit with Dr Maha Ema, Director of Transcendental Meditation, UAE

in TM requires four consecutive days of attendance of roughly 90 minutes per session. You’re given your own sound for life to use during this practice. What happens if someone forgets this? Any aspect of the training course can be refreshed at the meditator’s request. This is part of our follow-up programme and serves as our professional commitment to everyone we teach. What changes have you personally felt since including this practice into your daily habits? The greatest changes have been the feeling that anything is achievable. TM has been pivotal in resourcing my mind and body to go after the things I really want in life and

know that they are always within my reach. What should we do if we break our routine? It is a very simple restart at your convenience. If you need help with this, we will support you fully to reinstate your practise and check its efficacy so that you are sure that you are practising TM correctly and getting results. Is there a certain time of day we should or

LIFESTYLE

should not be practicing? TM is very flexible in that you can practise your twicedaily sessions at any time of the day. Ideally though, the first session is best done in the early morning before starting activities to create maximum boost and momentum, and the second session is best done towards the end of the day’s activities – late afternoon or early evening – to dissolve any accumulated fatigue and stress from the day’s activities and help you sleep better. What advice would you give to someone wanting to try this? Start now and make sure you’re working with an accredited TM teacher wherever you are globally. www.tm.org

informed by this too, and we were able to create a showcase bookcase because this was very much ingrained into all of us from when the project came into fruition for all stakeholders and suppliers. AT: Essentially, storytelling was the anchor of the brand and tying that into how our grandmother Lulu (who couldn’t read or write) was an incredible storyteller which was key to how we briefed the designer. My initial mood board to her always had a bookcase and the Verner cloverleaf sofa, because getting lost in a magical piece of an often times hard world was what Mama Lulu nurtured in us, so bringing a touch of maximalism to the space with an anchoring bookcase was essential. There are a host of nostalgic elements in the space from the palm trees to rammed-earth detailing – how have you seamlessly incorporated it in the design? WT: The design was rooted in the nostalgia for our grandmother and her home and her kitchen but also to the earth we played in and created in, which was her garden basically, so these stories and how they shaped us were part of our designer’s brief, and she was able to encapsulate this into the design but also harken back to Middle Eastern processes of build and design, case in point the rammed earth wall. AT: And she was the original island girl, so the palm trees were an added touch to the story. The concept is located in one of the most sought-after spaces in Dubai, ICD Brookfield Place – how has this contributed to the success? WT: We are blessed to be able to have a space at ICD Brookfield Place, which is centrally located and has a great profile, not just in Dubai or the UAE but globally, this has garnered us a lot of attention, access and we are grateful for their support and understanding of our vision. What inspired you to open Lulu & The Beanstalk? WT: We wanted a space outside of our film work but that served as an extension of it Elevated comfort food anchors the menu – what are the key dishes that showed what stories can look like, so we created our very own offered? WT: We have comfort food that ranges from amazing samolove letter to our grandma Lulu and the city of Dubai. Our motto is sas, but these are complemented by a high-grade red snapper dish community through food, drink and music. or a lovely striploin steak and lovely creamy desserts that are delicious, familiar and easy to eat but also very aesthete pleasing. And AT: The city also needed a casual but chic bar/hang out space and then to round off the ease and comfort we have a fully stocked and that was something we didn’t have for ourselves, so like the saying goes, if there’s a book you want to read and it hasn’t been written easy to eat deli menu offering grab and go sandwiches. yet, you must be the one to write it. This come-as-you-are spot takes inspiration from your grandmother Tell us about your background. WT: We are Swahili (Black, Indian – Mama Lulu – tell us more? She was a and Omani ethnicity) and our family has had a presence and base in Black woman who fought against so many odds to raise her kids the UAE since 2001. WT: I do it by practicing gratitude. It’s amazing how counting your blessings can root you in refinement. The space is a whimsical explosion of colour – how does it all come together in harmony? AT: Mood boards. Lots of mood boards between us and the designer. And again, creating for what the public will experience and taking that into consideration while still bringing one’s own taste into it. It’s a delicate balance. WT: We got a really brilliant designer with great vision and taste who respected and fully grasped our brief, but she was also very spiritually attuned to us and who we are, because she is special like that. This translated into working in colors in a contrasting but very harmonious way. We were very lucky to be able to work with her. Melika Yazdjerdi ENTREPRENEUR How do you define refinement? Refinement, in its essence, is the art of taking an entity and nurturing it into the finest incarnation of itself, be it a masterpiece of art, a cuttingedge technological marvel, a mastery of skill, or a profound conceptualisation. It stands as a testament to an unwavering dedication to the pursuit of excellence, an unceasing journey towards perpetual betterment. What are key characteristics determining refinement for you? Characteristics that define a person as refined encompass not merely an unwavering dedication to personal growth but a profound capacity to radiate positive influence upon both individuals and the broader world through their cultivated behaviour and attitudes. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? Implementing a refined approach is an ongoing journey, and progress may take time, but I do follow these set of basic rules that apply to my daily life: Foster positive relationships with friends, family, and colleagues — Strive to create a supportive and uplifting social circle. Practise empathy in your interactions – Try to understand and acknowledge the emotions and perspectives of others. Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning – Seek out opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills regularly. Approach life with humility – Acknowledge your imperfections and the growth that comes from them. Cultivate resilience in the face of challenges – View setbacks as opportunities for growth and approach them with grace.

Mina Al Sheikhly FOUNDER OF BEAUTY BRAND BY MINA AL SHEIKHLY How do you define refinement? The process by which someone moves effectively from one stage to another. What are key characteristics determining refinement for you? There is no one type of personality that defines a sophisticated individual. Instead, they are individuals with a sense of self. Whether the individual is an introverted type, a complete tech nerd, or someone with amazing social skills, they are just entrenched in their strong suits and have a strong sense of identity in how they accomplish what they do. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your dai-

ly life? My belief is that being ‘refined’ is not about what you enjoy, but in how you enjoy it. It doesn’t matter what it is, but what matters is that when you are enjoying it - you are focusing on it. You are actively deciding what to listen to, and you listen to the things that bring you joy. It is not background music. It is not random background noise. It is something that brings you pleasure, that you have thought about, and actively chosen.

Sophie Howard FOUNDER OF JEWELLERY BRAND BY PARIAH How do you define refinement? Refinement is also about precision, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication to craftsmanship. It’s in the way our artisans meticulously carve each stone, the way our metal smiths shape and polish, and the way we create pieces that

LIFESTYLE

EW_112023_P122-125_Refine.indd 123

transcend fleeting trends. But refinement isn’t just about aesthetics or materials; it’s about creating jewellery that tells a story. It’s about crafting pieces that resonate with the wearer, that become a part of their journey, and that carry their memories and emotions. This, to me, is the true essence of refinement — the ability to create jewellery that goes beyond adornment and becomes an enduring symbol of elegance and ethical choices. This is The Refinement Issue — how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? I think it’s about being mindful and conscious in your choices - the food you eat, the products you use and causes you support. I find beauty in simplicity and minimalism, much like the timeless elegance of our designs. I appreciate the artistry in clean lines, well-crafted objects, and the power of design in enhancing daily life. Trends come and go, but enduring values and classic elements remain a constant.

Sonia Leretz CO-FOUNDER & PARTNER - REVALUE How do you define refinement? Refinement resembles an overall attitude. Translating itself in an array of manners, but it remains very much about taste and affinities we have for things, and in the relationships we have with others. Refinement is a peculiarity that nourishes itself within the detail, the subtlety and the elegance that mutually live up to a certain perfection. It is a sophisticated composure, a distinction, a form of delicacy. A composure that you build up along the years and in every context you will find yourself immersed in. It’s the relationship you build with life, time, and the relationship with the others that is more attentive and deeper. Refinement will be seen in the manner you will unfold or approach a situation; it can even be a motive: as we grow older, refinement becomes more than just a composure, a certain

The elegance in the way a person speaks; words used to express an idea; gesture; ways and manners a person would wear her/his apparel. On a deeper level, refinement is also maturity, and can be seen in characteristics such as resilience and diplomacy. A refined person is perceived as being unique in a certain way, with a singular personality. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? Refinement is the means we use to take care of our self. I implement it and experience it with culinary experiences where the refinement of certain chefs can be mind-blowing and will ignite my curiosity; in travels where refinement comes as a major learning process thanks to new cultural and social aspects I can experience; in the way I manage my business and how I will

seek to provide the finest solutions to make me progress; in my relationship with others for which I seek meaning and depth; and lastly, on how I will distance myself from situations to enable a finer analysis. Refinement is an attitude I have become accustomed to everyday, that makes me seek for authenticity and elegance. It supports my growth and puts me in the pursuit of always refining that version of myself that is endlessly shifting. In a certain way, refinement is my reliable pillar in making sure that my behaviour and my manners are always aligned with my values.

Fatma AlMheiri ENTREPRENEUR How do you define refinement? Refinement, to me, is the ongoing journey towards becoming the best version of oneself. It involves continuous learning, and a commitment to improving in all aspects of life. What are key characteristics determining refinement for you? Self-awareness, a broad range of knowledge and interests, good manners and kindness, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous self-improvement.

This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? I’ve implemented a refined approach to my daily life by ensuring that every aspect of my professional and personal life reflects the characteristics of the person I aspire to be. It is the way I live. Being self-aware allows me to recognize my strength and weaknesses which results in setting realistic goals, navigating through challenges, understanding my emotions and reactions, and most importantly not being attached to any outcome. I believe this is easily achievable once you surround yourself with people who only lift you higher, tell you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear.

Clare Holbrook DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AT MAISON PYRAMIDE How do you define refinement? It’s a lifestyle philosophy that goes deeper than its application to a single aspect of your life. For me, refinement is elegance. Not only in style but also in my life choices. It’s about creating an environment that values simplicity

and clarity. it’s about navigating my life with purpose, confidently pursuing my goals and dreams. I cherish simplicity. What are key characteristics determining refinement for you? Discreet but powerful. Less is more. I’ve always preferred an unfussy but considered way of dressing. I apply the same to my thinking, quality over quantity and substance over showiness. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? The choice is keeping things simple, selective, and intentional. I try to consider what brings me happiness and act on that instead of impulse, this applies to style and to my life. As I see refinement as elegance and courtesy, probably one of the most important lessons I’ve learned, is the importance of treating myself with the same courtesy I extend to others.

Karina Ross FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF FASHION LABEL YVON How do you define refinement? I believe it’s a highly developed state of perfection, beauty, and flawless quality. You can see my understanding of refinement in every piece and collection of YVON. What are key characteristics determining refinement for you? Elegance which is exhibiting high levels of sophistication in one’s actions and appearance. Cultivating taste, appreciating different paradigms, art, and the fine things in life. Thoughtfulness and showing a deep level of understanding of other feelings, patience, and intelligence. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? Great question, well at work I always

strive towards perfection in everything we do. Starting with the idea of our collection, to the design where we spend a lot of time reiterating, testing and validating to get to the final refined theme of our collection, then producing the first samples where make sure the quality is impeccable and meets our aspirations. Finally, the photo-shoot, we sometimes spend days shooting the collection until we achieve the desired vision for the campaign. Refinement is critical in fashion and it is sometimes what makes your brand different and stands out. On a personal level, I embrace refinement in my daily activities, like travelling, yoga, tennis, horse riding, buying fresh flowers every week. Mostly activities that give me composure and inspiration.

thing that is not making you become a better person is the best way to be. This is The Refinement Issue – how have you implemented a refined approach to your daily life? I would say I’m not there yet… I still have a lot to learn and change. I just want to refine my life in a positive way. I would also like to say that refinement does not mean being selfish, self-centred and leaving everyone, completely isolating oneself. It’s more of being emotionally intelligent and making effort towards people and things that are serving you too.

CONTENT CREATOR How do you define refinement? I would say to get rid of anything from your life that no longer serves you for the better. This could be anything from people, habits to places. What are key characteristics determining refinement for you? I think when someone has healed and is happier with losing the wrong people or things, for instance moving on from someone or something toxic and being happier with a positive mindset.. How long have you been in this space? We’ve been open since September 2022, so just over a year. Have you custom-built any bespoke pieces? Most of the space was a labour of love from our designer whose signature style is upcycling and re-inventing classic and iconic design pieces. She upcycled six of the Artek dining chairs, complemented by a beautiful Kooij table, and above that sits a one-off lamp designed for use by New York-based Japanese artist Yuko Nishikawa. Our most iconic custom décor is our centerpiece chandelier which was crafted by the whimsical team of Willow Lamp in South Africa. The bar front was a terrazzo design commissioned locally. How do you think the interior reflects you? Mama

Lulu was a woman who loved colours, and her world was filled with them. That was important for us to recreate through the lens of our designer and a big reason why we went with a female designer as well as she has an authentic understanding of curves, colours and texture. It was also important to evoke our island heritage (we have roots in Lamu and Mombasa in Kenya) and to capture the feeling of warmth and community that our grandmother’s home symbolised not just for us growing up, but our family and community as a whole in Nairobi and now through her spirit, Dubai. Describe your taste in three words.Warm, welcoming and delicately tasteful.
