the editor’s letter

ast year ramadan coincided with the school holidays as well as the year’s most 'scorchio' temperatures, resulting in the Uae experiencing a mass exodus around this time. so i am looking forward to sticking around this holy month to enjoy some quiet, reflective moments as the city simmers down. and while it would be good to spare a thought for those who are refraining from food and liquid during daylight hours, it’s worth bearing in mind that ramadan is not just about ‘fast, eat, repeat’ for a month. the word ramadan means ‘to burn’ with part of its purpose to burn away bad habits, impunity and things that are distracting you from the remembrance of allah. on page 50 we delve deeper into the meaning of ramadan in the modern world as we speak to three local muslim women. if your intentions are altruistic – i’ll be doing my annual box collections for the labourers, the ones who built this beautiful country – then turn to p46 for some humanitarian inspiration. it’s also a time to be kind to yourself: to use your shorter working hours to get in a good workout at the gym, to spend more (quality) time with your family, to treat you and your friends to iftar, take up meditation, discover what all the fuss about mindfulness is, spring clean your house, learn new recipes or simply to curl up with a good book. of course, it wouldn’t be Emirates Woman if we didn’t also have your ramadan wardrobe, plus your summer holiday sunnies, sorted. because the best way to see the world (and dubai’s sensational sunsets) is through these must-have, statement accessories. enjoy the issue. and please drive extra carefully this month.

remember being a huge fan of the Spice Girls when I was 11. Mel C’s three-stripe Adidas tracksuit was always so striking that, even standing among the miniskirts and leopard print of her bandmates, her ultra-sporty look still stood out. I always loved how relaxed she looked – comfort was cool in the 90s and it’s just as cool now. In fact, I doubt it will ever go out of style. Mel C represented the freedom of choice that I love – personal style is all about breaking the rules and being an individual, after all. Her and her tracksuits represented that. I’m pretty happy to say, then, that this 90s rave culture stalwart is back in a big way thanks to Moschino, Vetements and Versace – although pioneering its return more than most is Parisian brand Chloé.

Wearing its school-uniform-maroon two-piece took me right back to 1994, except creative director Clare Waight Keller has done an amazing job of elevating it into the realms of high fashion. It’s a perfect coup – everyone is rushed off their feet these days, so they seek out those trends that allow them to be relaxed yet stylish at the same time. It’s the same reason that the sneaker trend has run and run. Wearing an haute tracksuit for me felt very authentic, as I’m a casual person anyway who’s always on the go. I loved how nonchalant the top-to-toe Chloé made me feel, but if I were to style it differently to the runway look, I would team it with one of my handworked denim jackets from Goé. The tracksuit came from streetwear, after all, so denim and trainers are its natural bedfellows. Mel C is probably rocking exactly the same look as we speak.”

ut no one’s ever gonna find Miss Jackson,” Panic! At The Disco famously sang in their 2013 Miss Jackson hit. They were right on the money. While the Emirates Woman team were on set to style and direct our cover shoot – coaxing out Janet’s more playful side in the process – for the most part she was sweetly coy and extremely private, retreating to a sanctuary far from the madding crowd. And so the scene was similarly set for a very intimate event for Janet Jackson in a suite at Dubai’s Armani hotel in order for her to showcase her brand sparkling new Unbreakable Diamonds collection along with business partner Paul Raps of Paul Raps New York. The VIP guests craned to catch a glimpse of one of the world’s most recognizable and celebrated women – so famous that minders, managers and a multitude of media are de rigueur for this dainty star. According to her business partner, Janet’s nature shines in harmony with the collection: “Janet is truly a special, gracious person,’ says Paul. ‘After having the pleasure of meeting with Janet, it was then that I realised her prestige, elegance, class and strive for perfection were the most ideal personifications to represent the most exclusive, beautifully exquisite line of extraordinarily designed diamond jewellery.” Unbreakable – also the name of Janet’s latest album and her tour that has now been put on hold – reflects all aspects of the artist. According to Jimmy Jam, of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, American R&B songwriter and production team associate of Janet Jackson since the 1980s: “It talks about her unbreakable bond with her fans and her family, with her faith and with her friends. And I think it’s an

album where you have to live a lot of life in order to really be able to verbalise and lyricise those thoughts.” Back in the Armani Hotel and a fresh-faced Janet emerges from behind closed doors with her Qatari billionaire husband, Wissam Al Mana, who gallantly escorts her through the room; the star, dressed in an abaya with her hair tumbling down her back like a modern-day Rapunzel, protesting all the while in a sweet, sotto voice about how “shy” she is. But is it possible for an award-winning recording artist and actress, who started her career as a nipper when she first appeared on stage with the Jackson 5, to genuinely be this coy? especially given she grew up in the spotlight and went on to become one of the biggest-selling pop artists in history with 35 number one hits and five Grammys. Not to mention her countless performances in front of thousands of excitable fans and her acting roles on both the small and big screen. Plus her seminal influence on music videos that cemented her status as a pop icon. Then again, Janet has always been an enigma. “Janet is pretty shy, but only when you don’t know her well. I think when you know her well, she’s not shy at all,” says Jimmy of the youngest member of the Jackson family. one of her oldest friends, puts a slightly different spin on it: "Anybody who has been around Janet for any period of time will tell you the same thing... That she is humble to a fault. she will not take credit for the things she is responsible for. she will always say, 'we did it' instead of 'I did it,” he says. of course, it's a common myth that all musicians and actors are extroverts. Many of the best performers are actually very reserved and it’s tenable that it is music – more importantly, her music – that switches her on. “I think music is really the power for her; it’s why she can perform in front of people,” says Jimmy of the ingénue turned actress turned music mainstay. “she enjoys the energy and the feedback that the audience gives – she feels that instant recognition of a song, people singing along with her. It’s a friendly environment and she feels she’s amongst a group of friends so it makes it easy for her to get out there and perform because she feels comfortable on the stage.”

and there lies the dichotomy when it comes to her fans. on one hand she is as loyal to them as they are to her. But she is also relishing her new-found privacy and her quieter life in the middle east as the wife of 41-yearold wissam who manages a middle eastern empire of 55 companies involving fashion, media, engineering and real estate. (as an interesting aside, economist sam wilkin writes in his book, Wealth Secrets of the One Percent that there are only 1,826 billionaires in the whole world). way to go Janet. with sources revealing that Janet never previously considered offspring an “essential” part of her “fulfilment”, and international online magazine MadameNoire writing that she did not panic about not having kids of her own due to the abundance of nieces and nephews in her family circle, some are now suggesting that it is her new circumstances and her role as a happily married woman which has led to this happy – albeit unexpected – announcement. even her social media messages are often conundrums, littered with cryptic clues of a far more clandestine life. while Janet never declared she’s actually pregnant, she did announce in a video on her twitter account (just after our shoot) that she and her husband were “planning” their family, which meant delaying her Unbreakable tour. "we’re in the second leg of the tour and there’s been a sudden change. i thought it was important that you were the first to know," she said. “i have to rest up, doctor's orders, but i have not forgotten about you and will continue the tour as soon as i can.” You have to give the woman props: for all the fame, she’s remained famously private – determined that her life not become tabloid fodder. in spite of this, or perhaps because of this, she continuously manages to surprise us. she’s come full circle in her career, breaking away from her father and becoming a superstar in her own right as opposed to being known as michael’s baby sister (she was his closest friend and confidant – he used to call her Dunk). in spite of her public discretion, it’s clear she still calls the shots.

“nobody’s putting words in her mouth or telling her what to sing or how to dance or how to look or anything,” says Jimmy. “she is in total control of that. i think you certainly see another side of her in front of the camera, but it’s always very honest, it always is the same coming from the same heart and the same soul.” perhaps her enigma lies in her ability to assume multifarious identities – both in her public persona and her behind the scenes working life. as Jimmy says: “she makes timeless music. it’s music that’s rooted in great melodies and great lyrics and there are many sides to Janet. there’s the rock side, like Black Cat, there’s the more sensual side like That’s the Way Love Goes, there’s the funky side with What Have You Done for Me Lately or Nasty and songs like that. she makes it so it’s a whole experience and so you don’t get tired of what she does because it’s not the same thing all the time. it’s really a wide array of different songs and different tempos and different textures and all of that.” significantly, it’s talent that doesn’t come with an expiration date. she’s paced herself – there’s usually a three to four year gap between albums – which, Jimmy says, has helped her to live an exciting life while still being able to take time off. “that makes you a complete artist and it definitely helps your longevity.” what’s more, she’s not yet ready to bow out. “we can definitely expect more albums from Janet,” says Jimmy. ”i say that because of how much fun we had making Unbreakable. Going into it, we knew what we were setting up to try to do, which was to make a great album that spoke to her friends, her family and her fans. and i think we were able to do that. But i think we really felt in our hearts that there’s still more music and more lyrics and more things that we wanna do. that said,” he adds, “Janet is also very much into acting, into Broadway plays and really all types of creative things so you may see her do a whole lot of different things and really kind of mixing the different medias which is something she does really well. i’m excited about the future for her, but definitely would hope to be in the studio making some new music very soon.” so while Janet’s impending motherhood may be her focus for now, the surprise specialist still has plenty saved up her sleeves. Until then, she plans to lead her life as anonymously as possibly. Because when you’re as famous as ms Jackson, who can blame you for not wanting anyone to find you? n

HOPE AND HUMANITY Listed as the worLd’s Leading aid donor, the Uae is home to some of the most charitabLe peopLe on the pLanet. ahead of the hoLY month, EmiratEs Woman meets the women whose hUmanitarian efforts are crossing continents, cULtUres and caUses from their base in dUbai words: traceY scott

or some, philanthropy is about volunteering. For others it’s about fundraising. And for most it’s about solving problems. Whatever your interpretation, there’s no denying that the UAE has created a culture of charitable giving that is unmatched in the Middle East. As the saying goes, the numbers speak for themselves. In 2015, the UAE was listed as the world’s leading aid donor, contributing US$5.1bn (Dhs5.5 bn) to poorer nations in 2014, according to figures released by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Honing in on Dubai, International Humanitarian City has delivered more than Dhs1.3 billion in humanitarian assistance via its members – which include UN agencies and NGOs – in the last three years. And with humanitarian action now the UN’s costliest activity – more so than its peacekeeping operations – philanthropy is absolutely necessary. Of course, philanthropy comes in many guises, from

government-backed initiatives to individuals on the ground making a difference. Cue Barbara Evans, the founder of Rags to Ritches, a Dubaibased organisation that turns unwanted fabric into beautiful clothes for less fortunate children. “I read about Lillian Weber, a 99-year-old lady living in America who would make one dress a day and then send a batch off to an orphanage in Africa,” says Barbara, a British expat who moved to Dubai from Egypt in 2012 following the Egyptian revolution. “I couldn’t get this lady out of my mind – she was there all the time – and so I thought why don’t I try and do that in Dubai. I put a shout-out on the Green Community Ladies' Facebook page for unwanted bedding and fabric and the response was unbelievable. Now there are 16 ladies sewing in and around Dubai and a R2R rep in the US, UK and one in New Zealand." Since setting up the charity in 2014, Barbara has stitched and shipped almost 2,000 items – from hooded fleeces and

dresses to shirts and baby bed sheets – to countries children and charities in India, Uganda and Ethiopia among others. Most recently Barbara and a troupe of six ‘sewing ladies’ and three interpreters headed to the refugee camps at the TurkeySyrian border to teach single mothers how to sew items which they can then sell to generate an income. In September, she will pack her bags once again and head to Nepal to make and distribute her storied fleeces – made from Emirates Airline fleecy blankets – to the children living in the Nepalese mountains. Another lady making positive change in the UAE is Stephanie Sutherland, founder of Dubai Mums’ Helping Hands, a community resourced network of almost 2,000 women who give their time to support the UAE’s labour community through a bunch of benevolent initiatives, such as the delivery of care packages. “DMHH started off as a small group of ladies who wanted to thank the tram workers for their hard work,” explains Stephanie, winner of

the Humanitarian Award at last year’s Emirates Woman, Woman of the Year Awards. “It was simple, we would make a couple hundred treat bags and pass them out when they got on their bus at the end of the day. The outpouring from our community was pretty incredible. That’s when we realised how many people wanted to participate in helping others but just didn’t know how. So, we created the ‘how’.” And by creating the ‘how’ the group, which Stephanie set up in 2014, helped over 20,000 labourers in Dubai last year. But rather than relax her efforts following 2015’s record numbers, its founder is ramping them up. “We like to do a project every quarter and we’re about to kick off our Fruit and Vegetable programme,” explains the former vice president of a New York-based start-up. “After interviewing several labourers, we’ve found that their diets are comprised mostly of starch because fruit and vegetables are somewhat 48

emirates woman june 2016

costly. This programme is meant to help supplement their nutrition. It’s more than that to us, though. By hand delivering our bags of groceries and thanking them for building the incredible city that we know and love, we let them know that we care.” A case in point that philanthropy and commerce can work together is Maysa Jalbout, the recently appointed CEO of the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, a multi-billion dirham charitable venture set up by UAE businessman Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair to provide Arab youth from underprivileged backgrounds access to higher education. “We are aiming to place 15,000 students [in universities] over 10 years,” says Maysa, the former chief executive of the Queen Rania Foundation and champion of quality education for all children and youth. “I’ve long been a supporter of girls' and women’s education – I’ve done that throughout my career – and

I’m very much interested in ensuring that the foundation supports young women just as much as it supports young men.” Maysa, who applauds the UAE’s “generosity” and support of education for all, says: “Education can be the bridge to better health, protection, prosperity and peace, and one of the best investments a nation can make.” It is oft said that true philanthropy requires a disruptive mindset, innovative thinking and a lot of creativity. This coterie of charitable women proves that such criteria (and more) can be found flowing through households and conglomerates across the UAE. n

The True meaning of ramadan Jennifer Mcneill speaks to three women about what the holiest month in the islamic calendar means to them and learns that there’s much more to ramadan than simply abstaining from dawn until dusk

T

he ninth month of the Islamic calendar is a time of connection: connection to faith, to families confined to tradition. There is comfort in knowing that around the world, 1.6 billion people are engaged in the same activities at the same time. And despite the fact that there will be variations in how they observe Ramadan, despite the differences in the places they call home and the levels of freedom they may enjoy, however different their journeys through life, for four weeks they are united in their practice. As we found out when we spoke to three very different Arab women. Dr Rafia Ghubash, the former president of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain and President of the Arab Network for Women in Science and Technology, is one of the most influential women in the UAE. She says that while non-Muslims might think of Ramadan as the month of fasting, it is in fact also the month of giving. “This giving should be a daily habit of everyone’s that’s reflected in our behaviour,” she says. Non-Muslims can also, of course, use 50

emirates woman june 2016

this month to get involved in local charities. Saira Farhat, a Dubai-based housewife says: “Giving should be a way of life and shouldn’t be subjected to one month alone. However, giving in Ramadan comes with a heightened reward. It is a blessed month.” This is all part of the spiritual journey of Ramadan, explains Ilham Abbas, Emirati fashion and e-commerce entrepreneur: “It’s to be the best version of yourself, a time to reflect and improve.” “The important aspect that non-Muslims should know about Ramadan is that during this time we have a very strong positive spiritual energy – we feel it around us and it stays with us throughout the month,” says Dr Rafia. In this cultivation of spiritual energy, fasting undoubtedly plays its role. It’s a practice of discipline as well as a way to foster empathy and kindness, as Ilham tells us:“Fasting helps in self-restraint, and builds a stronger compassion towards the poor.” When we asked Saira about the changes she plans to make over the Holy Month, she replied simply: “Cleanse the soul.”

By redirecting focus from distracting world activities, fasting is thought to cleanse the soul well beyond the actual act of fasting itself. Saira says: “Fasting doesn’t only mean refraining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, it continues even after hours.” And what about the claim that productivity falls in Arab countries during the month of Ramadan? “For me personally, I have a clearer mind during Ramadan, my productivity is better in terms of quality of work,” insists Dr. Rafia, while also illuminating us on the health benefits associated with intermittent fasting. Describing Ramadan as a month that requires focus on the inner self, Ilham says that giving yourself a certain amount of flexibility is paramount. “I adjust my timings and have more flexibility during the weekends.” “The great thing about work in Dubai,” adds Saira, “is the reduction of working hours for those who fast. This allows them to catch up on what the month is all about. And that is beautiful.” n

lose your eyes and think about Dolce & Gabbana, and what comes to mind? Va-va-voom corsets, frothy lace, bejewelled embroidery, sexy wiggle dresses, flamboyant florals, ecclesiastical motifs – and italy of course! Few designers have mined their heritage for inspiration like Domenico Dolce and stefano Gabbana. the duo have paid a less-than-subtle tribute to every aspect of their country’s culture, season after season, for over three decades. they’ve turned the golden mosaics of sicily's Cathedral of monreale into jaw-dropping prints, tourist locale the Leaning tower of Pisa into intricate beaded embroideries, the traditional ceramic planters of taormina into statement-making jewellery and the notion of la famiglia into a full-on sentimental tribute to mammas and their bambini. “we see our collections as a continuous evolution of our ideas, without forgetting our roots and our Dna,” explains Gabbana. “we remain open, not forgetting who we are and where we come from.” each collection, therefore, is a celebration of one of the many head-spinningly multi-layered possibilities of italian history that the designers have to play with. “italy is a beautiful and magical country. each region has its own peculiarities and flavours that cannot be found elsewhere. everybody knows and loves something italian, be that food, art, fashion, cinema, language…” says Dolce. “i love the humanity and the warmth of people, the traditions found in each region, the sense of

fashion/interview family and belonging, the artistic and cultural heritage that was left to us and the craftsmanship abilities whose knowledge has been passed on from generation to generation.” To put it simply, the pair love their birthplace and they certainly aren’t afraid to show it. Favouring their own brand of high-octane glamour and never shying away from a cliché – indeed, they see glory in them – the duo don’t overhaul their collections with a drastically different look each season, instead they tell fantastical tales in a never-ending playbook, with each collection a cohesive continuum of the last. “We certainly like the idea of being narrators telling a story through our collections,” says Dolce. “They are chapters of the same big tale,” Gabbana explains. “Each of them is an individual world of magic and beauty but they all have a fil rouge that merges them into one big story.” And so, on to the next chapter – the latest Alta Moda show. After the breathtakingly spectacular milieus the designers

have conceived for their couture collections over the years—who could forget the Midsummer Night’s Dream fantasia at sunset in Portofino, the flotilla of sailboats docking on Capri’s Fontelina for a Fellini film come to life, the ode to Venice in a Palazzo overlooking the Grand Canal, (not to mention the debut Alta Moda in a former monastery beneath Mount Etna)—this season’s show had some extravagant shoes to fill, but these boys know how to rise to an occasion. We’re talking couture on an operatic scale — literally! “This Alta Moda edition was centred around the Teatro alla Scala and its world. Last year we drew inspiration from the ballet, this time from the opera,” says Dolce. The pair took over the stage of Milan’s world famous

neoclassical opera house in a show that paid homage to the great Puccini operas—Turandot, Madama Butterfly and Tosca—and to Biki, the Milanese dressmaker (and granddaughter of Puccini) who fitted aristocracy in all their finery and “lived and breathed the world of the opera,” says Dolce. “She was extremely strong, creative and emancipated just like her grandfather’s heroines, and a true style icon in the years of the Maria Callas opera grandeur.” “What fascinated us was the strength, the sensuality, the grace of the female protagonists,” says Gabbana. And what beautiful things grew out of the exploration: exquisite cocktail dresses were pailetted with water lilies, irises and orchids. intricatelyembellished bodices, gilded pagoda shoulders and fur-trimmed sleeves on floorskimming cloaks. There were the literal references to La Scala’s sweeping red velvet auditorium and baroque gold castings. namely, bulliondecorated dresses that clung to the body, its distinctive façade illustrated on numerous silk garms, the ceiling’s dramatic chandeliers transformed into gleaming earrings and the lavish Puccini opera bills re-imagined in gemstone-encrusted lettering across turn-of-the-century A-line opera coats. The Biki thread of the story was sewn heavily into the collection, from the pin cushion-cum-fabulously gem-festooned watches and the surfeit of wondrous headpieces – Biki was a fan of big hats – to the deconstructed gowns of dramatically full proportions, striated with measuring ribbons, unfinished hems, tacking stitches and layer upon layer of spectacularly coloured tulle. it wasn’t just a question of delightfully elaborate excess, but also of the duo’s ability to parade the more sober side of their DnA with equal eminence. That combination of style and substance is Dolce & Gabbana to a fabulous T. Take the precision-cut male opera-goer inspired pantsuits, the seemingly simple sheaths whose only adornment were glittering clips that clasped at the shoulders and the waist, the sumptuous green velvet gown that held its own in a sea of splendid florals, or the sculpted black hoods that gave a nod to the designers’ Catholic upbringing. This was a show by italian designers about how much they love italy, and Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are shining examples of why it is good to remember where you came from. That’s amore! n

“Keep your pencil sharp and apply your colour in hair-like strokes, to give your brows that threedimensional look”, says Tonya Crooks, the brains and skills behind Hollywood’s most coveted brows. Think Megan Fox, Julia Roberts, Fergie, Eva Mendes – basically any starlet with incredible eyebrows. On a recent visit to Dubai to debut the aptly-named Brow Gal collection at Tips & Toes, the brow guru also revealed the Second Chance Brow Enhancement Serum. “Everyone wanted thick Cara Delevingne brows, and they’ve either waxed or threaded and generally made a mess, so I came up with a solution – a brow enhancement serum.” Basically a vibrating wand that you brush over your brows for five to 10 seconds to stimulate the hair and push the serum down in to the follicle to encourage growth. Overdue a threading? Glide on the highlighter pencil just under the brow, “great for covering re-growth” says Crooks.

That’s because the revolutionary skincare line uses EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) to stimulate the reproduction of skin cells. Incorporating as few ingredients as possible, the serum focuses on the thinning of skin – one of the most overlooked characteristics of ageing – with Bioeffect possessing the atounding ability to increase the thickness of the skin by up to 60 per cent.

PuttIng LIFE On IcE everything you neeD to know about freezing your eggs in the uae worDs: jennifer mCneiLL

L

ast month actress Olivia Munn revealed on Anna Faris’s podcast that she had frozen her eggs, enthusing: “I think every girl should do it!” And with more and more people opting to have children later on in life, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has found that there has been

a “substantial increase” in the number of women freezing their eggs in recent years. For girls whose careers are taking centre stage, it’s good to know that hitting the snooze button on your biological clock is an option. But before you go putting anything on ice, here is everything you need to know about the procedure in the uAE.

Time is of The essence When it comes to freezing your eggs, the first rule is: the younger the better. In the uAE, the average age for women having the procedure is early thirties. “It is certainly possible to freeze eggs in a woman aged over 35, but the numbers obtained will be smaller and the quality reduced,” explains Dr David Robertson, group

Medical Director of Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic in Jumeirah, Dubai. As every woman is different, clinics always offer initial testing to determine if you are a good candidate for egg freezing at all. Who knows? Biological factors and lifestyle choices could mean one woman at 41 may be more viable than another one at 29, though statisically this is seldom the case.

You get what You paY for Freezing your eggs is a pricey procedure and that’s unavoidable. Depending on the clinic, the whole process costs around Dhs15,000 – give or take the cost of injections. Researching your clinic is something you should take seriously. “Go see it yourself – visit the clinic fully armed with a questionnaire,” says Dr Pankaj Shrivastav, Director at Conceive Gynecological and Fertility Hospital in Sharjah. Ask whether or not they’ve had a successful pregnancy from someone using a frozen egg. If the answer isn’t yes, find another clinic.

Let’s get down to detaiLs Women are born with two to three million eggs, which decreases to about 400,000 thousand by the time they hit puberty. Egg freezing procedures will only be able to freeze as many mature eggs as a woman can produce after ovarian stimulation in one menstrual cycle. During a normal month, the female body produces one egg, so to increase the possibility of success, medicine is used to stimulate the production of multiple eggs for freezing. “Depending on 78

your age, that’s around eight to 14 eggs,” says Dr Pankaj. The whole thing will take between 10 to 12 days, with ovarian stimulation taking up the bulk of this time. You’ll need to medically induce multiple eggs to be produced and this is normally through self-administered injections of follicle-stimulating hormones, luteinizing hormones or both. But before you start squirming in your seat, remember that apart from these daily injections, which

many cells and you can take out one to five of those cells without harming the embryo. However, if you test an egg for its entire chromosomal content, you essentially kill it.” Additionally, freezing your eggs will not hurt your odds of getting pregnant. Having eggs frozen will not affect your fertility nor will it affect your ability to fall pregnant naturally at a later date.

Lower Your expectations Like with natural conception, pregnancy is not a guarantee. When mature eggs are retrieved, there’s no way of knowing which (if any) are viable until

is her husband’s sperm used for the fertilisation,” says Dr David, emphasising that a legal marriage certificate would have to be produced. Frozen eggs can be kept for a period of five years after which it is at the clinic or patient’s discretion to keep them or discard them and the eggs may not be taken out of the country. Freezing fertilised eggs is not currently legal in the UAE and neither is egg or sperm donation. “Many women travel overseas to receive this kind of treatment but, if a pregnancy resulted, the Sharia view would be that this was an adulterous pregnancy and hence illegal,” says Dr David, adding, “It is an

“unofficiaL figures state that onLY around 5,000 BaBies have Been Born worLdwide from frozen eggs” you will become quickly accustomed to, this is a painless procedure. The actual egg retrieval itself is performed under local anesthetic and/or sedation and the procedure is usually painless. It requires no incisions; the doctor uses a special hollow needle and a suction needle to extract the eggs into a test tube. And no incisions means no scars and minimal recovery time.

Know the facts One large misconception surrounding egg freezing is that congenital abnormalities can be detected from the eggs prior to fertilisation, but Dr Pankaj explains this is not possible: “The chromosomes of embryos can be checked because an embryo has

it’s time to use them. Unofficial figures state that only around 5,000 babies have been born worldwide from frozen eggs, even though the treatment has been around in some form since 1986 and its popularity has been on the incline ever since. Statistically, fresh eggs have a much higher rate of resulting in pregnancy.

Be aware of the Law In the UAE there are protocols that dictate the process of freezing eggs.“There is no legal restriction on social freezing (freezing your eggs for personal and social, not medical, motives) but the eggs cannot be fertilised and replaced into a woman unless she is married and it

extremely sensitive issue and considered to be haram.” The following procedures, however, are legal: IVF (in vitro fertilisation), IUI (intrauterine insemination, when sperm is injected into the womb during ovulation), blastocyst culture (when embryos are left to develop for longer before being placed in the womb), sperm freezing and egg freezing. If you are considering the process the most important rule is to ensure you go into it armed with as much factual information as possibleand completely realistic expectations. n
