SAY NO NOW

NO PROBLEMS

Your Say No Now feature in the December issue of Emirates Woman really hit home hard for me. I can’t say no to anything or anyone and always suffer massive guilt if I can’t do something that’s been asked of me. I have now made it my mission (and new year’s resolution) to say no more often and not feel bad about it. Peta Jefferies, Sharjah

Pandora’s Box, with thousands of showstopping outfits flaunted at every turn. She also owns the late Isabella Blow’s entire wardrobe, having purchased it in a bid to stop it being auctioned off. Making the headlines recently for toppling off her skyscraper McQueen ‘armadillo’ heels at the memorial service for the designer, some might see her fashion choices as being too extreme. Whichever camp you may sashay into, there is no denying that Daphne is leagues ahead, with style predicators watching patiently and the fashion crowd hungry to see just what she will do next.

very girl knows the feeling; the splitsecond of utter terror that toppling over whilst wearing high heels brings. It’s the ultimate revenge of geeky physics on cool-kid fashion; resulting in an instant, and sometimes painful, fall from grace. Speaking from firsthand experience, what may seem mildly funny to those watching from above is bitterly humiliating for those crumpled down below, swatting away smirking offers of ‘help’ with a meek laugh and hurried “I’m fine…” The unfortunate soul may be unscathed in body, bar a twisted ankle, but not in mind. It’s a problem that my girlfriends and

I have encountered ever since those initial giddy days exploring the social scene (a number of years ago that I care not to share), but a time when we weren’t yet accustomed to the ways of working a pair of six-inch heels; tottering excitedly around in partyready stilettos and ‘hitting the dance floor’. Occasionally this meant literally hitting the floor, face or bottom first, due to the unbalancing disadvantages of our chosen footwear. However, we looked fabulous (when upright) and that’s all that matters. And no amount of practice will rid you of the occasional bout of unhinged ‘Bambi on ice’ syndrome. The most seasoned and

elegant heel-wearing women still fall victim to a clumsy trip; first prize for which, in my opinion, still goes to Naomi Campbell’s infamous 1993 plunge in Vivienne Westwood’s iconic platforms. More recently, the stacked stumble by style maven Daphne Guinness, sadly whilst arriving at the Alexander McQueen memorial last September, proved that solemn situations and sky-high heels don’t always go hand-inhand. And finally, fashion hearts went out during the same month to 16-year-old Nina Porter, who fell to her knees on the shiny Burberry S/S11 runway; the young model was seen teary eyed backstage, despite the encouraging round of applause she received from the audience when bravely walking the final look of the show; and who could blame her. It seems fashion’s ‘no pain, no gain’ affair with height has an awful lot to answer for and it’s a situation that only seems to be getting more dramatic. Resident footwear front-runner YSL keeps knocking out superb platform staples each season; the label’s Tribute and Iconic styles boast nothing less than a 5.5inch heel; not to mention Mr Louboutin and his 15cm high A/W10 designs; Misfit and Toutenkaboucle (that’s right). Towering altitude is expected of us – so what are we supposed to do? If you cannot forgo the extra inches, take advantage of the seasonal dip in temperature and bring the ankle boot into play – far more supportive than a pair of peep-toes, and, dare I say it, a ‘practical’ height. Isabel Marant’s latest collection features a perfect shade of grey, slouched, wedge version to add edge to the new year. However, now’s also the time of year that most of us can contently declare that the party’s over anyway, and time to give those dancing shoes a well-earned break. But for those of you who aren’t ready to quit just yet, I’ve spotted a pair of glitter and crystal-embellished brogues by Miu Miu that should keep things tapping along nicely until next season. ■ JANUARY 2011

DANCER IN THE DARK

THE GRACEFUL NATALIE PORTMAN TALKS ABOUT HER POLITICAL ASPIRATIONS, STYLISTA CREDENTIALS AND IMMERSING HERSELF IN THE PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY DEMANDING WORLD OF BALLET FOR HER OSCAR-TIPPED ROLE IN BLACK SWAN W R I T T E N B Y N ATA S H A FA R U Q U E

went to see the Swan Lake ballet – one dancer was virginal and scared, and the other was sexy and predatory,” says Oscar-tipped director Darren Aronfsky. Other than 29-year-old Natalie Portman, the star of his new movie Black Swan, there is perhaps no actress in the world who could so perfectly embody both sides of this dramatic dichotomy. In Natalie, Darren, like so many directors, including Mike Nichols, Anthony Minghella and George Lucas before him, found his muse an accomplished, much-lauded actress who inspires her co-stars to enthuse, leaves critics grasping for superlatives and captivates audiences. Natalie’s career trajectory could never be labelled traditional. She burst onto the silver screen as a precocious 13-year-old in the seminal yet violent Luc Besson French flick Leon, a role that saw fame come fast. But even at such a young age, Natalie understood the calling and commitment of her career. “Acting from so young, I definitely missed things, but I also definitely gained experiences from that. Also when you‘re a kid actor you get applauded a lot

for being really grown up, so you act really grown up all the time. Maybe I should have enjoyed being immature when it was acceptable – now it’s too late, now no one will think it’s cute anymore.” Since her breakthrough role in Leon she has flirted with big budget Hollywood roles (Padme Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy was not an acting tour de force and garnered attention from the Golden Raspberries awards, but it certainly plastered her across billboards making her a worldwide, household name), period adaptations (her manipulative Anne stole the show despite Scarlett Johansson scoring the title role of Mary in The Other Boleyn Girl), high-brow Broadway theatre (Cherkov’s The Seagull, co-starring heavyweights Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman) and now her first foray into dance in this darkly opulent psychological thriller. Natalie takes on the role of ballerina Nina, whose whole world revolves around dance, caught up in a web of intrigue and competition with her sexy understudy Lily (played by Mila

Kunis) when it comes to the casting to a new production of Swan Lake. Fragile Nina’s angelic demeanour is perfect for the White Swan; the question is whether she can tap into her dark side to take on the alter-ego, the devastatingly seductive Black Swan. Paranoia and self-doubt devastate the delicate Nina as the story unfolds and the two polar opposites merge and intermingle. Integral to the story is the relationship between Lily and Nina – constantly pushing her increasingly confusing boundaries and perceptions. Dance is used as a metaphor for life, the choices we have to make and the extent to which we are able to deconstruct and redefine ourselves. The character of Nina is a psychologically-challenging role for any actress, yet alone one still shy of hitting the big three-zero. To Natalie, however, her career is her craft – honing her credentials, whatever the role, is all part of the process. And it’s a process she is exceptionally proficient at. Despite being thrust into the limelight before hitting puberty, Natalie’s demeanour is always composed. You won’t see her stumbling out of nightclubs or involved in scandal al la Lindsay Lohan and co. When questioned about her take on the Hollywood acting scene and her ability toe the line when many of her peers fall so far from it, she says: “I’m not a perfectionist, but I definitely like discipline. I’m obedient.” She may be a bona fide A-list celebrity, yet her private life remains private – a novelty in tabloid-obsessed Hollywood circles. She refuses to be drawn into commenting on her controversial relationship with French-born New York City Ballet principal dancer turned choreographer and Gap model Benjamin Millepied, (who was rumoured to have cast aside his girlfriend Isabella Boylston in favour of Natalie) who she met on set. Often compared to fellow thespian Jodie Foster, who juggled her showbiz lifestyle with an Ivy League education, Natalie’s intellectual credentials cannot be questioned. Her priorities were laid bare when she blithely stated “I’d rather be smart than a movie star.” Luckily

it’s not a choice she has to make. She used her undergraduate degree in psychology from Harvard University to penetrate Nina’s psyche. “This was actually a case where something I did in school translated into something practical, which is very rare. It was absolutely a case of obsessive compulsive behaviour. The scratching, anorexia and bulimia are forms of OCD; ballet really lends itself to that because there’s such a sense of ritual. The wrapping of the shoes everyday and the preparing of new shoes for every performance – it’s such a process. It’s almost religious in nature. It really is a devotional, ritualistic, religious art, which you can relate to as an actor, because when you do a film you submit to your director in that way. Your director is your everything and you devote yourself to them; you want to help create their vision. I think the sort of religious obsession compulsion would be my professional diagnosis.” Natalie is nothing if not ambitious and whilst she pledges allegiance to her craft, she is still acutely aware that she can use it as a springboard to explore other options. “I do love acting, but I do love other things, too. I don’t want to limit myself. I don’t really feel like I’m at a point in my life where I could say forever, or never, about anything. I guess I’m not committing to anything, but I’m very committed to acting right now and I love what I do.” Unlike other actresses who might lend their names to furthering their brand via promotional spin-offs and products, this active Democrat campaigner who backed John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and current US President Barack Obama, has more weighty options and muses, “maybe I can go into politics once I’m too ugly for Hollywood!” Ugliness isn’t a problem that besets the elf-like Natalie; her flawless face and porcelain skin is a beauty brand’s dream (the premiere of Black Swan at the legendary Ziegfeld Theatre in New York was sponsored by Dior Beauty) yet she prefers not to market herself as a model or use her fame to sell moisturisers. She also never puts a sartorial foot wrong; despite being firmly on the fashion

“ I DON’T WANT TO LIMIT MYSELF. I DON’T REALLY FEEL LIKE I’M AT A POINT IN MY LIFE WHERE I COULD SAY FOREVER, OR NEVER, ABOUT ANYTHING” police’s radar, she has never been issued with an arrest warrant for failing to impress. She saunters down red carpets full of selfconfidence (looking breathtaking in a black Dior gown matched with bright red lips for Black Swan’s premiere) and has no qualms in donning the standard fallback of jeans, T-shirts and Converse whilst grabbing a Starbucks. Unlike other stars looking to expand their brands, Natalie has no plans to dabble in couture – unless she’s wearing it. When asked if we should be looking out for a future fashion collaboration, she responded: “I don’t think so. It’s not something I’m particularly interested in. I don’t think I have a particular talent for it. I have no problem finding clothes; there are plenty of clothes out there that I like.” Not one for taking fashion risks, she also steers clear of fashion faux pas; having American Vogue favourite Zac Posen as your personal stylist helps when it comes to premiere night. Other überdesigners she sports include Chloé, Isaac Mizrahi and Marc Jacobs; labels that seem to reflect her understated, yet timeless, aesthetic. Skirts are usually knee-length and silhouettes always classic; she channels the grace and class of film stars of the 50s, always elegant, never brash or vulgar. This vegan’s animal rights focus is also at the forefront when it comes to fashion; she won’t touch fur, feathers or leather; she has even gone so far as to launch a range of Te Casan luxury vegan shoes. Unusually for a member of the female species, she doesn’t go weak at the knees when faced with four-inch stilettos, stating: “I like wearing flat shoes. The thing that I was happy to stop wearing for this movie was point shoes. They are torture devices. Ballerinas get used to it and so it was definitely a case of it being a new experience for me, but they feel very medieval.” Natalie has also been a champion of Rodarte, created by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, and has sent the brand’s red carpet kudos soaring; they were also chosen to create the heartbreakingly intricate costumes for Black Swan. Most women – let alone actresses who bank on their looks for their next pay cheque – would balk at shaving their head, yet Natalie exuded self-confidence when she embraced the buzz-cut that was required for her role in sci-fi epic V for Vendetta. “I was really excited to get to shave my head – it’s something I’d wanted to do for a while and now I had a good excuse. It was nice to shed that level of vanity

46

for a girl.” She did, however, reveal: “I wasn’t used to being looked at so much. Walking down the street, I can usually blend in, but people really stare at you when you’re a girl with a shaved head.” Her lack of vanity and dedication to transform for her character was also in evidence when she embarked on the gruelling filming schedule for Black Swan. “It was a great challenge and I had really amazing support. I started with my ballet teacher (Mary Helen Bowers) a year ahead of time. We would do two hours a day for six months; really just strengthening and getting me ready so that I wouldn’t get injured. Then we started doing five hours a day, so I was swimming a mile, toning and then doing three hours of ballet class. Then we added the choreography; we were probably doing eight hours a day and the physical discipline of it really helped with the emotional side of the character, because you get the sense of the sort of monastic lifestyle of only working out that is a ballet dancer’s life. You don’t go out with your friends. You don’t have much food. You are constantly putting your body through extreme pain and you really get that understanding of the self-flagellation of a ballet dancer.” She famously sustained a dislocated rib whilst training for the film. Natalie’s portrayal has already garnered a Best Actress Golden Globe nomination – another statuette to keep company the one she already has for the drama Closer – with a win seemingly imminent (she narrowly missed out on the Best Supporting Actress award in 1999 as Ann August in Anywhere But Here). Although she was nominated by the Academy for an award in 2005, it seems certain that she is the leading lady in the running for the coveted Oscar this year to add to this plucky, empowered silver screen ingénue’s already impressive résumé. One thing is for sure, with varied roles on stage and screen, an appearance in Paul McCartney’s Dance Tonight video, philanthropic work that specialises in anti-poverty activities and FINCA International (which provides micro-financing to womenowned businesses in developing countries), a stint on Saturday Night Live (where she heroically parodied herself in a rap) not to mention a kid-pleasing turn alongside Dustin Hoffman in Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium – this is one leading lady who is set to inspire, captivate and challenge her audience, both on and off stage. ■

A Haitian woman rests sitting on the rubble of a destroyed building at a market in Port-au-Prince just days after the earthquake that shattered the country

I

t’s been a year since a deadly earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck Haiti. Already ranked the poorest country in the Western hemisphere with a history of violence and dictatorship, this new catastrophe left utter devastation and chaos in its wake. With at least 230,000 people killed and over 1.5 million homeless, this natural disaster crippled an entire country and its population. Despite the efforts and good intentions of immediate rescue operations and international aid, the earthquake had damaged and essentially shut down Haiti’s major airport, seaports and roads making relief efforts virtually impossible. In many ways, it seemed as if the people of Haiti, surrounded by endless piles of rubble, grief and makeshift tents, were left to literally save themselves. Unfortunately, the earthquake was not the last major disaster that the Haitian people had to face in 2010. Once the tremors and aftershocks finally subsided, Haiti was flooded by torrential storms and hurricanes making living conditions even more dangerous and unsanitary. Ultimately, due to a lack of water sanitation, the country was soon facing a cholera outbreak that quickly became an epidemic. In the last three months alone, over 93,000 people have been infected with the water borne illness and over 2,100 have died. With one tragic disaster after another, both natural and political, Haiti’s present day status and future seems fairly bleak. Yet time and time again, particularly in the past 12 months since the earthquake hit, the brave and resilient nature of the Haitian people shines through. Determined to rebuild their country and reshape their future, Haitians continue to move forward in the face of adversity. Aid and support has since poured in from various sources ranging from celebrity fundraising efforts to international relief organisations providing medical care. Julia Roberts, George JANUARY 2011

communities. It has been working in Portau-Prince, Haiti’s capital, for the past 30 years with humanitarian projects in the area covering basic education and literacy, health and nutrition, as well as HIV and AIDS prevention. Once the earthquake struck, TearFund’s disaster management team conducted a ‘needs assessment’ of the region and identified that while the various aid organisations were reaching out to the population of Port-au-Prince, virtually no aid was reaching the neighbouring rural regions. When TearFund learned there was no support offered in Léogâne, a mountainous city just 30km outside of the capital, it became the sole agency working in the area. Lynsey Pollack, Senior Communications Director of TearFund, says: “In just the past 11 months, TearFund has built 500 transitional homes that are earthquake and hurricane resistant for the population of Léogâne which 3,000 people will benefit from. “We’ve also built three permanent schools

VIVA RIO Committed to promoting a culture of peace and social development through innovative arts, sports, water sanitation and peace building projects, Viva Rio is a Rio De Janeiro-based NGO that has been successfully working in Haiti since 2005. For the past five years, especially this past year, Vivo Rio has addressed the social and sanitation needs of the underprivileged community of Bel Air in Portau-Prince. Ruben Cesars Fernandes, Director and Founder of Vivo Rio, says that what allows the organisation to provide relief in Haiti is that, “many of the issues facing urban Haitian communities in Port-au-Prince – from gang culture to poor sanitation operations – are very similar to issues facing favela communities in Brazil.” Thanks to government and private funding in Brazil, Viva Rio has applied the methods it uses to assist communities in its home country to its work in Haiti.

and supported 28 others with construction, teacher training and providing staff, which in turn has addressed the educational needs of about 5,000 children. And most recently, due to the cholera epidemic, we have conducted children’s clubs to teach them how to prevent and detect communicable diseases. We also promote teaching about hygiene in the local schools and provide communities with bucket filtration systems so that they can sanitise water from the local spring.” Additionally, TearFund also offers social services to Haitians displaced by the earthquake. Evelyn’s most resounding memory, however, isn’t the devastation caused by the earthquake, it’s the spirit of the people who she is helping. “Haitians are incredibly resilient. They just dust themselves off, no matter what hand is dealt them, and move forward.” To find out more about TearFund’s incredible work or to donate to their emergency fund, visit their website at: www.tearfund.org/haiti

Viva Rio’s dance programme provides an emotional outlet for the Haitian community

Thus, to provide clean water supplies for several communities in the slum neighbourhood of Bel Air in Port-au-Prince, Viva Rio brought in numerous respected engineers from Brazil to work with Haitian engineers and masons to collect and treat water from the Haiti’s frequent rain storms. Also to battle the cholera outbreak, Vivo Rio distributed 1,000 water filters through out the capital with each filter providing 1,000 litres of clean water per day. Viva Rio also works with community organisations from schools and clinics to distribute filters at these locations so the maximum number of people can benefit from clean drinking water. Another way in which Viva Rio has improved the welfare of Haitian communities and reduced violence has been their music, dance and soccer programme for local youths. By using the cultural connection of Brazilian dance and sports to provide an emotional and stress relieving outlet for the local population, Viva Rio conducts various dance programmes and capoiera classes through out Port-au-Prince to huge success. After the earthquake, Viva Rio continued the classes for hundreds of people. Ruben says that Viva Rio’s success in improving the emotional and basic needs of the Bel Air community can be attributed to three simple factors. “We have a cultural affinity with Haitians with similarities between our cultures, we believe that we are equals and operate as such, and we always partner with the locals.” To donate to Viva Rio’s team and its unique programmes to support Haiti’s victims of the earthquake victims, visit their website at www.vivario.org.br.

HAITI’S LOCAL HEROINE Just over a year ago, Melissa Gilchrist Higgins, 34, was working as a Dubaibased PR executive, but having seen the devastation the earthquake caused, her life changed forever. “I donated funds, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I had to do more and that I could do more,” says Melissa. She quit her job in PR and signed up with the Global Volunteer Network, a volunteer services organisation with placements in Port-au-Prince. In her 30 days of service, Melissa taught adult English classes, visited and treated children in orphanages, helped dismantle and clear schools damaged in the earthquake, sanitised school bathrooms, helped run a Women’s Day once a week and spent countless hours playing with children and providing them with swimming lessons. “By travelling to Haiti, I gained the

understanding I needed to educate myself in ways I could help, but most importantly, how I can continue to help,” she says. “By living alongside the community, by playing with children who had lost their entire families in the earthquake, by spending time with individuals who just needed someone to talk to in their darkest hour, I learned more than I ever imagined.” Now back in Dubai, Melissa knows that her commitment to Haiti’s progress, “is, and will always be, a life-long project of passion. For me, this is a long-term partnership and not something I imagine I will ever want, or be able to, walk away from.” Currently raising funds to start her own charitable organisation to assist the earthquake victims, you can learn more about Melissa’s experience with her online diary blog of her time in Haiti at http://alligatorsontheroof.blogspot.com. ADVOCATE. WHY IS THIS PARTICULAR ROLE SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? Because women are the architects of tomorrow’s world. We are pacifiers, nurturers, providers – everything depends on women. Never underestimate what we can do. AT 90 YEARS OLD, HOW DO YOU STILL STAY SO FOCUSED AND PASSIONATE? We are still the same now as when we were young – we love, we hate, we learn, we make friends. ‘Old’ doesn’t mean ‘finished’ – I’m still the same and just as passionate as I was before. I’m also extremely organised and always in control. I have everything in my reach so that I never miss a minute. But my strength comes from all the wonderful young people I meet. They inspire me.

EMIRATES WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2010

MARIAM BEHNAM THE EMIRATES WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2010, WINNER OF THE ARTISTS CATEGORY, AN AUTHOR AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS ADVOCATE CONGRATULATIONS MARIAM, ON WINNING THE ARTISTS CATEGORY AND THE TITLE OF EMIRATES WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2010. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. This award isn’t just about now, it’s recognition for all my services to this country, and to girls and women in general. It’s for them that I do my work. But it almost feels like a lifetime achievement award and it’s a feeling that won’t go away, as I feel like I have finally landed after a very long journey. 56

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WON THE OVERALL AWARD? There was just so much love and sincerity in the room. I had a standing ovation from people I didn’t even know – it was a rare treatment that came from the heart. In terms of the award – it’s reawakened me and the people around me, and reminded me that I’m still worth something and still have something to contribute. AS WELL AS AN AUTHOR, YOU ARE A WOMEN’S RIGHTS

YOU MOVED TO DUBAI FROM IRAN 30 YEARS AGO – HOW HAS THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE CHANGED IN THAT TIME? Not long ago, 30 or 40 years, the mentality was very different. Women didn’t go into higher education as they had no need for it. Girls in Dubai now are constantly studying and pushing themselves forward. This is a land of opportunities and I’ve never felt as alive as I do in Dubai. Girls here should gallop and I’m very, very proud of our achievements thus far. WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN CHASING A DREAM? It’s about not wasting time – especially as children. Don’t sit behind closed doors; knock and knock until they are opened. We should all reach our full potential in our lifetime. WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? I’m at my best when speaking at educational institutes and educating young girls, so I will certainly continue with that. I also have another book ready, a love story, so I look forward to that being published soon, too.

LUCY BRUCE WINNER OF THE HUMANITARIANS CATEGORY AND FOUNDER OF HARMONY HOUSE CHILDREN’S CHARITY WHEN YOU WON THE HUMANITARIANS CATEGORY, HOW DID YOU FEEL? I was completely taken aback. It was the first time in my life that I’ve actually been nominated for an award, and the fact that the award was for my work with Harmony House made it very special to myself, my family and our hard-working, dedicated team. TELL US ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO WITH HARMONY HOUSE… Harmony House provides underprivileged children in the slums of Haryana, India, with basic children’s rights, including education, nutrition, medication, clothing and hygiene facilities. It’s a place where children can enjoy their childhood without the worry of the hardships and responsibilities they have at home. We opened just over a year ago and now work with 170 children.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR US TO GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY? It not only benefits those who need our help, but I can honestly say that the happiest people I have ever met are those who dedicate a part of their time to helping others. I personally believe that the more you give, the more you receive – in more ways than one. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR PEERS? There are many people who can sway your confidence, but never let anyone discourage you. Learn and absorb from other people’s

experiences and then apply yourself to your mission. WHAT LASTING MEMORY WILL YOU TAKE FROM THE AWARDS? Firstly, I would like to salute the other nominees – both their efforts and their initiatives. Secondly, every minute of the awards evening will remain engrained in my memory for a lifetime. I think it’s applaudable that Emirates Woman has taken it upon itself to launch such a platform of recognition for women living in the UAE. I will always cherish the award, so thank you.

WINNER: HUMANITARIANS

HOW WILL THE AWARD BENEFIT YOU AND HARMONY HOUSE? Winning the award has given us a tremendous amount of exposure and credibility. To be recognised in such a prestigious manner will help us to establish and gain respect from our existing and potential supporters. We hope that through winning we will be able to generate more interest and awareness throughout the UAE. WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION FOR HELPING OTHERS? I have always felt incredibly blessed and I’ve been lucky enough that these blessings have been passed onto my children. But it overwhelms me when I think about the problems some people face every day, unable to provide for their families. I reached a point where I needed to do whatever was within my means and power to make some less fortunate families lives a little brighter. WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? I intend to continue carrying the torch for Harmony House, hopefully increasing the size of our shelter and opening more centres. Ideally we want to secure a few acres of land and work towards a government grant to build our own facility. We want to do so much more and intend to keep tackling the challenges ahead of us, one day at a time. JANUARY 2011

SIMA VED WINNER OF THE ACHIEVERS CATEGORY AND VICE CHAIRPERSON OF THE APPAREL GROUP YOU WON THE ACHIEVERS AWARD – HOW DID THAT FEEL? It felt amazing – who doesn’t like wining! But it did feel a bit premature for me, as I still have a long list of things I would like to achieve. Our ambition is to have 1,000 stores by 2012. YOU’RE VICE CHAIRPERSON OF THE APPAREL GROUP – TELL US A BIT ABOUT ITS HISTORY. My husband and I started Apparel in 1996, as a franchise retail company. Today we have

600 stores, 50 international franchises in 14 countries. Our key strengths have been the people who work with us and for me, the undeniable support from my father and brother. WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION AND DRIVE FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Having watched my self-made father inspired me to do the same myself. Luckily I married a man who believes in hard work and has a lot of passion – we push each

other. I want my daughter’s to realise that women are great multi-taskers, able to handle work and home. YOU THANKED YOUR HUSBAND IN YOUR SPEECH. WHAT ROLE DOES YOUR HUSBAND PLAY? He is forever reminding me how I need to earn a living! But his sheer drive is daunting, so in order to keep up, the least I can do is share his passion for business, so we’re achieving the Apparel dream together. HAVE YOU FACED ANY OBSTACLES IN YOUR WORK LIFE? The hardest thing to overcome is people’s perception. There is a tendency to assume that if you come from a wealthy background, you don’t need to work or that you don’t understand the value of hard work. It was difficult to convince people about my seriousness and sincerity at work. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN FORGING AHEAD IN THE BUSINESS ARENA? Go for it! Life is too short not to try out all your dreams and aspirations. Money comes and money goes, but what should never leave you is a high sense of self-worth and respect. WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO HONOUR WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE EAST? Women are primary care givers and nurturers in any society. Men owe women a lot, but tend to overlook this contribution in their daily grind. So reminders like the Emirates Woman of the Year Awards are essential for those who need to realise that this society would not be the same if women weren’t around. WHAT WILL YOU TAKE AWAY FROM THE EVENING? I was nervous, but it all felt like a dream. It was a great feeling. Everyone in my category deserved to win. It was really remarkable for me to hear people say that they consider the Emirates Woman Awards the most genuine in the region. I will also remember Mariam’s speech – I aspire to live my life with such passion, having boundless energy to fight for the right causes. She is one of a kind.

ELHAM AL-QASIMI WINNER OF THE VISIONARIES CATEGORY AND THE FIRST EMIRATI FEMALE TO REACH THE NORTH POLE HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN THE VISIONARIES AWARD? I truly did not envisage the recognition through any award, much less a Visionaries award. It was a surprise and very humbling. WHAT IMPACT WILL THE AWARD HAVE ON YOUR AMBITIONS? It has reminded me that with the ability to impact or engage people, comes the responsibility to achieve the most you can on behalf of all. It also reminded me I need to stop putting off, and start announcing, what is next! HOW DID YOU SUCCEED IN SUCH A PHSYICAL AND MENTAL EXPEDITION? The knowledge that if I didn’t succeed drove me, as I knew it would be something in my own head, for me to deal with. But if I succeeded, it would be a new context for me to share with many who don’t have to take risks in order to fulfil their dreams. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR WOMEN CHASING A DREAM? Often women are told they juggle too much but, if we are honest with ourselves, we know what we are capable of, therefore only we can truly push ourselves to succeed. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR CHALLENGE? It was a life experience that made me realise no one can succeed as a lone agent. But likewise, even the best support network cannot carry you to your destination if you don’t have the right resolve to begin with. No one can give you wings, you have to grow them yourself – but no one can take them away, either. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS? It is incredibly important, but some of the most compelling messages I received after sharing my journey were actually from men who talked about how they hoped the place of women in their society might evolve. These messages were often more ambitious than those from women. HOW DO YOU SEE THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE REGION 60

EMIRATES WOMAN

JANUARY 2011

CHANGING IN THE FUTURE? I think the key to unlocking a powerful source of development and growth is through women, both in their traditional and evolving roles. Women constantly influence and shape the next generation. Celebrating shifts in roles as and when they arise, through everday roles and one-off achievements, are important reminders that we can all achieve results. WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? I am currently very focused on learning

from my experience – it is very introspective phase. After life-changing events, one can fluctuate in one of two very different directions and I want to make sure I continue down the path that is right for me. WHAT WILL YOU TAKE AWAY FROM THE AWARDS? I was so impressed by the winner Mariam Behnam. What she has subsisted through reminded me how lucky we all are today, and what luxuries we all have in our lives.

YOU WON A US$10,000 BUSINESS GRANT FROM ADCB, AS WELL AS A BUSINESS COURSE FROM INSEAD – HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT YOU? Firstly, I’d like to use the money to develop my website so it’s more functional and usable for clients. The grant will also help towards my marketing plan and support my advertising strategy. I can’t wait to start the INSEAD course. I’m a huge fan of learning and the Key Management Challenge course will really benefit my ability to run my company successfully. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF EMIRATES WOMAN AND ADCB? Knowing that someone backs my vision has given me the extra confidence boost I really needed to keep me focused and heading in the right direction. I’m now pushing to make Know How Life a success for all of us.

EMILY CHEYNE WINNER OF THE ADCB AMBITION AWARD AND FOUNDER OF KNOW HOW LIFE COACHING CONGRATULATIONS FOR WINNING THE ADCB AMBITION AWARD! Thank you! with the objective to work with individuals in the UAE to help them realise their potential and dreams. Offering psychological support seems like such a basic offering, but I know the positive effect it can have on people. YOU GAVE UP YOUR FULL-TIME JOB TO FOCUS ON KNOW HOW LIFE – WHERE DOES YOUR COMMITMENT COME FROM? I’d been in the Marketing industry for 10 years, but it was no longer fulfilling me. I knew I had to do it. Know How Life is my

WHAT DOES THE CONCEPT OF ‘AMBITION’ MEAN TO YOU ON A PERSONAL LEVEL? Ambition is about hard-work, self-belief, enthusiasm and perseverance. I do a lot of work with my clients in helping them set goals and it’s vital that we all aspire to achieve them. Growth is a natural way of life, but we all need to keep moving, achieving and progressing. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO WOMEN WHO HAVE A STRONG AMBITION LIKE YOURSELF? Never, ever stop dreaming. Realising your ambition or goals is never going to be easy – you need to stay focused, even when the end seems hard to reach. Keep going. WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU BOTH PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY? Professionally, I want to keep raising Know How Life’s profile and build up a solid client database. Last year was about setting it up, I would like to make 2011 the year where I make the business work and reach as many people and clients as possible. Personally, I want to continue learning and developing my business and entrepreneurial skills. I’ve had a very busy 12 months, so I’d also like to start enjoying what I have achieved! ■

hen the temperature drops, it’s not only the opaques that need to come out of the closet, your beauty products should also offer some comfort to the skin, too. Skin can lose up to 25 per cent more moisture in the cold, while hair can take on a frizziness usually reserved for The Simpson’s Sideshow Bob. SKIN SUPPORT

WATCH YOUR MOUTH

A serum is a good starting point when it comes to skincare – think of it as your insurance plan. Look for products that have hyaluronic acid in them because it holds in at least 50 times more water, and keeps skin plumped and hydrated. Kerstin Florian’s Correcting Hyaluronic Serum is the best kind of non-greasy hydration. Apply directly onto cleansed skin, under your moisturiser to ensure you don’t get any midday crepey-effect. Your moisturiser should also be amped up. Take into account the ingredients – things like Glycerine draw in moisture without being too cloggy on combination skin types, and can be found in Garnier Nutritionist Skin Renew Daily Regenerating Moisture Cream. Ceramides in Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Gold Ultra Restorative Capsules Intensive Treatment, hold onto moisture in the skin and create a barrier to keep all the rubbish and pollution out. And don’t think you should skip the SPF either – this is a time when you can do some serious damage. For winter protection, you cannot beat Bobbi Brown’s SPF 25 Moisturizing Balm. Dr Leslie Baumann, MD, skincare expert from the Baumann Cosmetic and Research Institute in Miami, recommends, “applying moisturisers to the skin within three minutes of getting out of the shower or bath. Doing this helps trap the water in the upper layers of the skin and decrease dryness and itching.” Masques are a brilliant weapon – forget anything with clay, you need the ones that up the moisture content – like Estée Lauder’s Triple Cream Skin Rehydrator; it only takes 10 minutes and gives instant relief to wind-swept cheeks.

Lips can also become chapped very easily, especially when you’ve travelled to colder climes on a long haul flight. Lip balm is really the ultimate cure; anything with shea butter, hyaluronic acid and demethicone are all great ingredients and offer a protective barrier and remedy for fissures. Also be aware about the other aggravators of the mouth – your toothpaste and mouthwash can make dry skin around your mouth worse; so opt for alcohol and sodium laureyl sulphate-free products. And when it comes to severe chapping, we know that the cherry-flavoured lip balm tastes great, but those yummy flavours can be another irritant. Keep it pure and use something like Sisley Nutritive lip Balm or Chanel’s Hydramax + Active Nutrition Lip Care.

EMIRATES WOMAN

HAIR HELP Key words for winter hair are “moisture” and “protection,” says British haircare guru Philip Kingsley. “Your hair absorbs moisture from the air, and as cold winter air contains much less moisture than warm air, your hair tends to dry out making it frizzy and more vulnerable to damage. Your dehydrated hair is thirsty, so it needs to be re-moisturised and protected.” Kingsley does also recommend a “humidifier” in drier conditions and also “washing and conditioning everyday – switching to richer formulas.” For further haircare, we also love Nivea’s range of hair masks – they have all hair types covered, and in a poll at the EW office it came out trumps as a brilliant budget buy. If you do feel like splashing out on something sumptuous, then nothing is easier than Frédéric Fekkai’s Overnight Repair Mask; simply smooth it onto dry hair before bedtime and leave it to work its moisturising magic while you sleep – without any greasy residue left on your Egyptian cotton linen pillows either.

YOU’VE BEEN THE FACE OF A NUMBER OF FRAGRANCES THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO FINALLY HAVE YOUR OWN?

It makes me feel very proud. I learned so much from being the face of other fragrances that I feel prepared to have my own. For me it wasn’t about deadlines, I didn’t care if it had to come out on a certain day or if it would take me five years; this was my first, and I really wanted it to represent me and everything that I love. Everything from the scent, to details of the font used, to the colour of the box and the bottle... YOU SOUND LIKE YOU WERE VERY INVOLVED IN THE CREATION OF HEAT?

I was. It was a long process but I really enjoyed developing it. Heat has one of my favourite flowers in the top note – red vanilla orchid, which is really sexy and spicy. I worked very closely with the perfumers at Coty to produce something that I am proud to share with the world. We went back and forth, over and over again to get it perfect. I knew exactly what I wanted to create.

Behind the scenes of the Heat campaign, shot by Michael Thompson and directed by Jake Nava

SHOOTING THE TV CAMPAIGN FOR HEAT MUST HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE. TELL US ABOUT IT…

It was! I’ve worked with Michael Thompson before, and he actually took one of my first ever photoshoots many years ago. Similarly, Jake Nava has directed many of my music videos, so the set was very relaxed. Everyone was really laid-back and it was great to turn the whole concept into film – it was one of the most fun parts of creating this fragrance for me.

“I LOVE ANTIQUE BOTTLES. MY MOTHER COLLECTED THEM AND I REMEMBER GROWING UP PLAYING WITH HER FRAGRANCES” WHICH FRAGRANCE NOTES DO YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE?

Honeysuckle nectar, as it’s very sensual, so we added in notes of this, too.

HEAT’S TAGLINE IS ‘CATCH THE FEVER’ – WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

The phrase ‘Catch the Fever’ reflects the infectious nature of the scent. When you smell Heat it’s like something you just can’t get enough Beyoncé designed the bottle for her fragrance of. It’s hot, sexy and contagious and it with an antique, yet definitely makes you feel like you’ve modern feel caught the fever.

THE FRAGRANCE BOTTLE IS ALMOST SULTRY IN SHAPE. TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN…

The ‘Catch the Fever’ Heat campaign

HOW DO YOU WANT WOMEN TO FEEL WHEN WEARING HEAT?

Sexy, strong, empowered – I want them to feel like they can conquer anything. When they walk into a room, I want them to feel like they can leave a lasting impression on everyone they walk past.

I love antique bottles. My mother collected them and I remember growing up playing with her fragrances. So I really wanted to make sure that I had a little touch of those beautiful perfume bottles, while also achieving something very modern. We also wanted to make sure the bottle had the illusion of a flame, so it starts out red and radiates to gold, my two favourite colours. I am really happy with the final result and I think it will be something that I will be proud of 20 years from now.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO APPLY THE FRAGRANCE?

Well, for me, I always apply my fragrance behind the ears and on the chest, and I like to spray some in my hair as well. DID YOU TEST YOUR FRAGRANCE OUT ON FAMILY AND FRIENDS?

Yes, I did! But actually for me the best test are my fans. I wore Heat all through the end of my last tour, and every night as I greeted my fans I would wait to see if there was a reaction to my fragrance, and they loved it – I got a lot of compliments. JANUARY 2011

Marrakech is a mystical mix of mouth-watering mezzes and tagines, maze-like bazaars, gracious hosts and atmospheric riads. The fortified, pink-walled, dusky corridors of old Marrakech, situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and known as the Medina, entice and entrance visitors eager to capture the spirit of a bygone age. Travellers note the juxtaposition of Morocco’s romantic past with a modern future; although evidence of modernity seems to be banished outside the Medina in this bustling metropolis. A shopaholic’s dream, the term Aladdin’s Cave is particularly apt here; you’ll be tempted to splash your (Moroccan) dirhams on canary yellow babouches (slippers), jellabas (brightly coloured gowns), handpainted pottery, aromatic spices and vibrantly embroidered carpets. The most photogenic of the city’s souks is Souk des Teinturiers, while Kissaria is lined with stalls specialising in clothing, kaftans and cotton. The carnival-like main square of Jemaa el-Fna is where snake charmers sit alongside herbalists, magicians, acrobats and the gnawa (mystical musicians); come at night for an unforgettable alfresco dining experience with a nod to days of old. 2 GIORGIO ARMANI’S ARMANI HOTEL, DUBAI, UAE A minimalist aesthetic, with a sophisticated palette of muted greys, eggshell and taupe, combine with contemporary furnishings in Giorgio’s überluxe 160-room hotel located over 37 floors of the iconic Burj Khalifa; which is a little like walking into the world’s largest Armani Casa showroom. The entrance is suitably impressive yet somehow understated;

who’d have thought that could be achieved in the world’s tallest building, with the addition of mesmerising dancing water features, mega-lighting and a rather intimidating barrier stopping gawping plebeians sans reservations from entering? Italophiles can indulge their gastronomic fantasies in the signature fine-dining Ristorante, deli-style Peck, relaxed Meditarrano, or opt for the exotic in the form of Japanese or Indian. A chic spa and fabulously fashionista-friendly Privé nightclub complete the package with in-house chocolatier Dolci providing the requisite bedtime cocoa hit. www.armanihotels.com

When it comes to luxury, nothing is done by halves at Palazzo Versace

1 DONATELLA VERSACE’S PALAZZO VERSACE, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA The first high-fashion designer to add hotelier to her resumé, Donatella Versace’s Gold Coast Palazzo is aptly named. Fans of the label will find luxury (and Medusa-heads) by the opulent bucket load in the form of giltheavy, rich-coloured interiors, intricate mosaics and marble

hallways showcasing the late Gianni’s artwork. Rise at the crack of dawn (and make sure you throw on some waterproof mascara) to bag one of the blissful floating deck chairs poolside, while the Salus Per Aquum offers up Tai Chi and yoga amongst the usual spa suspects. You’ll probably be rubbing shoulders with one, but even if you don’t, you’ll feel like a rock star in this ‘more is more’ homage to all things ornate. A second hotel is due to open in Dubai later this year, so designer luxury will be one step closer to home. www.palazzoversace.com JANUARY 2011

3 DVF FOR CLARIDGE’S, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM Doyenne of the wrap dress and a Claridge’s aficionado since the 70s, Diane Von Furstenberg has turned her design hand (her first interior project) to the refurbishment of 10 rooms in this Mayfair art deco temple and legendary London landmark. Fans of her label (who include supermodel Natalia Vodianova and Victoria Beckham) will instantly clock her bold prints and bright colours, which are used to accent the light-filled Mayfair rooms on the custom-made furnishings, while signed prints from her Voyages series decorate the walls. Serious spenders with an eye on design will splurge on the beautiful two-bedroom Piano Suite. Get your Centurion card ready for a battering as the hotel’s located just steps from the spending temples on Bond Street. www.claridges.co.uk

yet-retro 50s, this bolthole is a welcome break from the rather more traditional, stuffy rooms that seem to typify hotels in the city. Perched steps away from the Ponte Vecchio in the romantic heart of Florence overlooking the River Arno, you’ll want to spend time gazing out, sketchbook in hand, whilst lounging on the window seats, or gazing in at the cleverly-disguised leather trunk-like tables. The classic black and white European films playing on loop on a plasma screen in the foyer mesmerise, while the sky lounge Terrazza dei Consorti is the city’s cocktail spot du jour. www.lungarnohotels.com

5 RALPH LAUREN’S PINEAPPLE HOUSE, ROUND HILL RESORT, JAMAICA Tasteful whites, blonde bamboos and dark mahogany (including a cloud-like four-poster bed) set the tone for the airy oceanfront 36-bedroom Ralph Laurendesigned celeb magnet. Classic, contemporary and ever chic. Ensuite bright white bathrooms include deep-set tubs and freestanding rain showers. Set

amidst a former allspice, pineapple and coconut plantation, with private pristine beaches and a double infinity pool, Pineapple House epitomises laid-back tropical beach glamour, and is just one part of the larger exclusive 110acre ‘Garden of Eden’ style Round Hill Resort. Well-heeled regular guests, including Harrison Ford, George Soros and the late Grace Kelly, gazed at the sunset from the sweeping terraces. Light, bright and marvellously Missoni

6 HOTEL MISSONI, EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND You’d be forgiven for being slightly surprised that Italian stalwart Missoni chose the Scottish capital rather than fashion-centric London, Milan or Paris to launch their hotel collection. Yet floor to ceiling windows offer up sweeping city and country views of Edinburgh’s historical Royal Mile and Castle, adding to the

allure of this modern 136-room design destination. Creative Director Rosita Missoni’s trademark zig-zag motif and funky signature stripes stamp their mark giving it a retro 70s vibe; bold base blacks and whites are broken up with blocks of bright green, yellow and turquoise. Giorgio Locatelli’s Cucina restaurant has morphed into the epicentre of the city’s social scene with Missoni’s psychedelic-printed crockery and tableware very much in evidence. Best of all, prices are of the prêt-a-porter rather than bespoke variety. www.hotelmissoni.com JANUARY 2011

9 TODD OLDMAN’S THE HOTEL, MIAMI, USA Todd Oldman’s Tiffany Hotel may have changed names to The Hotel, but the blue immediately associated with the jeweller still remains throughout the hotel. The rooftop terrace, with its traditional art deco spire, and the Wish Garden bar are where the beautiful perch on comfy

canvas sofas with a chilled Belvedere Martini. The blue waves of Miami’s posing paradise South Beach match the hand-stained tiles, satinribboned pillows and handblown glass lamps in the interior – ensuring the non-smoking 73-room property’s former identity remains very much in the foreground with Oldman’s love of colour apparent in the tie-dyed bathrobes and bright block bedspreads. The new annexe is inspired by Miami’s sunsets, so expect warm orange, corals and dusky reds. www.thehotelofsouthbeach.com

alph Lauren professes: “I don’t design clothes, I design dreams.” Which is exactly what he did when designing his ultimate escape; a vast ranch found in the deep south west of Colorado with breathtaking views over the San Juan Mountains. As an aspiring designer, Ralph started his fashion journey with a simple line of men’s cravats. He now presides over a global empire, including a plethora of fashion houses, fragrances and furnishings. And the name Ralph Lauren is now synonymous with the ‘all American’ style that can be found adorning everything from Purple Label Couture to wall paint. Passionate about interiors, his home furnishings line uses the finest quality fabrics, globally sourced like

woven Italian Jacquard linen. It is the iconic polo pony logo that identifies Ralph’s love of all things equestrian and his beloved ranch is a reflection of his love for Westerns. The huge saloon-inspired space is flooded with colonial fabrics, Native American knick-knacks and impressive antlers. The 100-year-old wooden barn is decorated with an enormous American Flag echoing his patriotism. Leafing through the exquisite interiors found in American Fashion Designers At Home will have you dreaming of quitting the rat race, slipping on a pair of leather riding chaps, by Ralph Lauren of course, and heading off into the wilderness. LEO (JULY 24 –AUG 23)

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more complicated, another spanner is thrown into the works on Tuesday 18th. Keep your cool, or risk losing everything, as stressing out will be counterproductive. Leave room to relax towards the end of the month to avoid burn-out. Learning when to focus on ‘you’ is vital. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

HOROSCOPES :PVS GPSFDBTU GPS UIF NPOUI PG +BOVBSZ CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – JAN 20)

Not everyone shares your optimism, but with a common goal use your positive thinking to drive the desired result. With the new year upon us, now is the time to shake off bad habits, and focus on the here and now. Procrastination has no place in 2011. Wednesday 12th brings opportunities.

If you’re on a detox, make sure it applies to your life, not just your diet. Strip everything back to basics and then work out where it is you want to go. Progress might be slow, but things you really want are worth waiting for. Say yes on Monday 10th – even if it’s just to go along for the ride. LIBRA (SEPT 24 – OCT 22)

Taking your anger out on loved ones is par of the course, push them too far and something, or someone, is bound to snap. Know your boundaries. Having a healthy attitude towards your career will bode you well on Tuesday 4th, come across keen and the next promotion could well be yours.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21 – FEB 19)

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

GEMINI (MAY 22 – JUN 21)

Guilt is a wasted emotion – think before you act to cast off its shackles. Friday 28th is the time to down tools and give yourself some muchneeded introspective time, so you can learn what you want to get out of the year ahead. A renewed interest in a past passion gives you new avenues to explore.

If you want this year to outdo the last, it’s going to take determination – put your money where your mouth is and invest in your future, because only you can. Love may have had you sidelined up until now, but you’re fully in its radar now. If you want it, it’s yours for the taking on Thursday 13th.

Being proven wrong can be a bitter pill to swallow, but mistakes are well worth learning from. Don’t walk away without acknowledging where you slipped up. Where money is concerned, less is more when you spend it wisely on Sunday 9th. Let a friend down gently to avoid confrontation neither of you need.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 22)

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 23)

SAGITTARIUS (OCT 23 – NOV22)

Your slate has been wiped clean at the turn of the new year, allowing you to start afresh. See this as the opportunity it is and make your year count from start to finish. A sudden change in opinion at work leaves you confused, but bare with the decision and work it to your advantage on Friday 7th.

Misunderstandings are all too common and yours threatens to blow up if you don’t let it blow over. Manage your emotions to avoid confrontation on Sunday 30th. Romance might not be your priority now, but make room for it when it does show its face – it promises to be a very welcome distraction. ■

Family ties may be tested at times, but it’s only when you need to rely on someone that you realise how strong those bonds are. Never say never may well be a cliché, but on Monday 3rd, it rings ever true. Pass up an opportunity at your peril. Use the weekends to recharge your batteries – mentally and physically.

TAURUS (APR 21 – MAY 21) PISCES (FEB 20 – MAR 20)

Look lively on Saturday 22nd – it’s a thinking woman’s game and once in a lifetime chances don’t come knocking twice. Someone you know is harbouring a big secret, but all the detective work in the world won’t uncover the truth. Patience will be your greatest weapon.

Home is where the heart is so take time to channel your energies where they’re most needed. Monday 17th is the perfect opportunity to show someone you care, but false platitudes can be sensed a mile off. Interest in work may have cooled recently, but the next few weeks will require your attention.
