arrie Bradshaw is back.We simply cannot stop talking about the Jimmy Choo clad NYC princess, fashionista susperstar. As Oscar Wilde once said, ‘it’s better to be talked about than not talked about at all‌’ There’s obviously a reason why people love to expend so much energy and time on her. And the fact of the matter is, Carrie Bradshaw has inspired a generation of women to turn their lives around in every sense of the word. They’ve left the comfort of their Email your views on these and other daily lives and headed out into the issues to emirateswoman@motivate.ae world renewed and confident because they want to be just like her. They want to pigeonhole their friends into a Miranda, Samantha or Charlotte, live in a tiny but trendy city-based apartment, spend their entire income on shoes and bags and chase that unattainable and totally unsuitable Mr Big. It’s the perfectly imperfect dream of course. Carrie has undoubtedly shaped and touched the lives of many women the world over. From New Hampshire to as far as the Middle East, women have openly, or surreptitiously lived their lives through the eyes of Ms Bradshaw. So as Sex and The City part II hits cinemas worldwide, there’s a part in every fashionista that simply cannot wait relive the Carrie Bradshaw experience all over again. Maybe they’ll take three friends, wear their best Oscar de la Renta frock, delicious Brian Atwood pumps and the ultimate Alexa handbag. Maybe they’ll sit in Bloomingdales’ Magnolia Bakery, eat sugary cupcakes and sip on lattes afterwards while talking about their trials and tribulations with their very own Mr Big‌ Who knows? Carrie Bradshaw we salute you. You are truly inspirational. DARRIN JAMES WWW.DJPHOTOGRAPHY.NET

LOVE YOUR BODY

The Age Issue, (May) was a truly landmark magazine and the Great Health At Every Age feature really stood out. We often ignore those tell-tale signs of health problems, often masking them the best we can. But this article uncovered them all and made us all the more aware. Importantly, it reminds us that prevention is the best cure, giving us the knowledge and also the know-how to get there proactively. Had I read this article in my teens, or even my 20s or 30s, I would be in much better health today. Thanks for giving us the chance of optimal health. Fiona Baker, by email 166

From pretty in peach to angelic in cream, there is no softer or more feminine way to make an impact than with a soft and flowery shade. Peach is perfect for when you want to appear demure, and chic and nothing packs a fashion forward punch for this season’s style quite like a pastel-infused floral design. As long as you are clad in pastels you can’t put a fashion foot wrong.

MONOCHROME There is a reason the monochrome look has been around since style began – it simply shouts classic and refined elegance. There is no colour combination better at grabbing attention or for simply making you feel great whilst looking sleek and chic than functional and flattering monochrome. No matter what the trend of the day calls for, season after season designers will offer up an array of monochrome beauties from striped shift dresses to bold black and white prints.

ionda Castana, which translated from Italian means ‘blonde, brunette’, certainly describes its glamorous designers Natalia Barbieri and Jennifer Portman to a tee. With a passion for all things fashion, and in particular footwear, the two close friends joined forces to set up the Bionda Castana label in 2007. Skip forward a few years, and this luxury footwear company has made quite the splash on the style scene, and is championed by celebrities such as Alexa Chung and Charlize Theron. Beautiful shoes for elegant ladies – we love Bionda Castana shoes. But what’s the ethos behind the brand? “Quite simply, we make shoes that compel a woman to say: ‘I need them.’ Our designs are classic with an edge and they are, above all, a comfortable heel-height for ladies to wear from day to night.â€? The shoes are exquisitely designed but who is the ÂŚBionda Castana lady’? “Our customer is someone who understands and appreciates unique design and quality. They would be typically concerned about quality and design as we have a luxurious style that speaks for itself.â€? Before starting Bionda Castana you were working in a bank. How did the company come about? “The company was founded on pure passion in 2007. We showed our first season at the WSA show in Las Vegas and luckily it just grew from there. Our hard work and determination has certainly paid off.â€? You’ve made your company a true success story, so what advice would you give other budding business entrepreneurs? “To always be patient and have a clear vision. It is also important to make sure that you don’t dwell on the negatives, one must learn from your mistakes and celebrate your victories.â€? Having ‘made it’ in the fashion arena,

Which leading lady would you most like to see in a pair? “I have seen Alexa Chung and Ivanka Trump in them, but I would most like to see Scarlett Johansson in them as she is all woman – modern, glamorous and unafraid.â€? So finally, where will the path of Bionda Castana take you next? “We have various collaborations with readyto-wear designers for London Fashion Week and we are expanding the range from platforms to flats. Instead of braving the sun’s damaging rays, try Pastels Salon (www.pastels-salon.com) for a top-to-toe spray tan, or if you prefer a DIY solution, Rodial’s Brazilian Tan Range (left) is an easy to use ‘tan in a can’ style spray, available in four shades which develop over time. But if a traditional self-tanning cream is more up your bronzing street, then Clarins’ Delicious Self Tanning Cream (left) will get your vote. PUSPA PORTIER Founder, House Of Portier

arrying luxury living with a passion for creativity, Puspa Portier has built an empire of elegance in the UAE. Her business brainchild, House of Portier, is the ultimate expression of a lifestyle concept. As a lifestyle consultant to the VIP set, she brings together style leaders in fashion, art, interiors, automobiles and yachts, providing them a style of living befitting the exuberant world they enjoy. “I founded my company as an extension of my being and a personal concept of my lifestyle, interests and beliefs. The ethos is to celebrate the joy of living and sharing good tastes, sense and style.” Originally hailing from Singapore, Puspa’s youth was surrounded by books, art and literature, her more recent life spent travelling and setting up home in far corners of the world. Having moved to Holland and then London, a relocation in 2006 saw Puspa, her husband Glenn Portier and son, Julz, shift shores to Dubai. Glenn is a prominent figure in the UAE industry and it’s his family name, Portier, that is rooted back to the street square in Monaco named Portier, that is so much a part of their legacy. “My extensive travels gave me a wealth to my knowledge and add to my senses.” With an eye for the arts, interiors and finer things in life, Puspa found that during her travels, she had already been a volunteer buyer for close friends, and it was from this idea that she opened Le Kraton Gallery in Singapore in 2002. “Le Kraton means ‘palace’.

64

emirates woman

June 2010

It’s a lifestyle gallery displaying interior pieces and art that I’d sourced from exhibitions or artists around the world.” These travels saw Puspa’s reputation grow and influence House of Portier. “My recognition in a world of style was enhanced by my travelling and personal networking, which became the foundation of my business. It positions House of Portier as the ‘style mantra’ that collaborates with style leaders in the world of glamour and luxury.” This flair and passion have seen Puspa’s business grow from a gallery, to a luxury lifestyle consultancy companyto even kitting out racing cars. As one of the world’s first female owner of a motor racing team, it was a happy accident that Puspa became so involved in the sport. “The House of Portier racing team was initially Glenn’s hobby and it has since become very professional and sophisticated. My enthusiasm and love for fashion, interiors and hospitality complements my husband’s passion for automobiles.” The House of Portier automobile division is a marriage between the couple’s business and interests, marrying luxury and vintage cars with an elite lifestyle both on and off the tarmac. “My idea is to mix glamour and engines,” says Puspa. And so, for a woman who lives and breathes luxury, how does she define it? “It’s an exclusive manner of services rather than materials. My ultimate definition, though, would be room service.” Away from her working life, howerver,

06

luxury to Puspa is precious time spent at home: “Being at home with my family is where the heart is. Though our romantic getaways would be the lakes in Italy or Paradise Lagoon in Tanzania.” Life isn’t all plain sailing, but Puspa takes setbacks in her stride. “Charm goes a long way and my energy, passion, commitment and loyalty counter the setbacks. I define the challenges as the fun part of my life that end with beautiful results. I am fortunate that I am surrounded and supported by respectful males who are admirers of women’s independence.” It is Glenn’s support that has ensured the continuing success of Puspa’s business, even during shakier economic times. “My husband is my great leader – he’s the rock and core of my living and always makes my world a better place to live in, and I count my blessings every moment I have. with him” And the route of her success, she puts down to her unerring discreetness: “My high profile clients are mostly some friends, but my words are my contract of trust and they know and have faith in my discretion in protecting their portfolio.” But when it comes to mantras, passion is paramount. “I do what I believe in and I do it with passion. I also believe love and happiness are perfect ingredients to have utter success in everything. I like who I am – a woman, wife and mother – and being a the fun, glamorous and exclusive business, this is a reflection of me and my beliefs.” ■ www.houseofportier.com

Clinic at EuroMed on Jumeirah Beach Road and suggested I sample one of her most popular makeunder treatments, known as Radio Frequency Skin Tightening. Using a warm, heated rod, she gently passes the contraption over the skin for about 45 minutes, which tricks the

baby soft skin. It goes without saying, I was totally hooked and returned for top-ups, finding the results increasingly more effective. If I continue down this line, I cannot honestly imagine ever needing Botox. Another market leader in skin tightening is Endermolift, available at L’Espirit, also on Jumeirah Beach Road. This procedure is marginally less uncomfortable, and patients have actually been known to fall asleep during their treatment. I may not have got any shut-eye, but I did find the experience generally quite relaxing. A small-ish nozzle whirs and putters around the skin, gently pulling and manipulating the fat cells into submission, thus encouraging tautness, circulation and regeneration. The results aren’t as eye-popping as the Radio Frequency treatment, and I was told I’d need several sessions to notice the ultimate results. After one session, my skin had a slight glow and the next day it certainly felt firmer. I can imagine that after multiple sessions the results would be more effective. Verdict? If you have a low pain threshold, take the Endermolift and bide your time. If you want instant firmness, clench your teeth and go for the Radio Frequency. Whichever you opt for, turn back the clock by attempting to makeunder the makeunder. ■ IMAGE GRAPHEAST/CORBIS

ast month we featured an article on Stealth Surgery, otherwise known as the ‘makeunder’, profiling the prevalence of minor procedures that gently nip and tuck you into shape, without resorting to anything drastic. Ebbing away are the more invasive facelifts of yesteryear, and in coming are a barrage of lunchtime procedures, which encompass a mélange of jabs such as Botox, fillers and mesotherapy, all promising to put the brakes on the ageing process without the telltale signs of surgery. A little nip here, a little jab there and slowly but surely age is kept at bay, as the years stand still rather than slip by. The talk of the town is that plastic doesn’t have to be drastic these days, and if there ever were two celebrities flaunting the beauty of the makeunder, Madonna and Demi Moore share the crown. My only concern is that, we still don’t know the long-term effects of these jabs, and for those who don’t fancy filling their faces full of unknown liquids, what are the other options out there? I went in search of the ultimate minimalist makeunder (the makeunder’s makeunder, if you like), looking for treatments that can actually make us appear younger and stave off ageing, without the necessity of going near a needle. My first port of call was a visit to skin guru Rebecca Treston, a vivacious Brit who has been buffing and preening complexions to perfection in Dubai for over 10 years. She’s recently opened an Anti-Ageing

collagen into thinking it is damaged and your skin begins to regenerate. I found the experience warm and pleasant at first, increasing to almost toe-curling discomfort. The rod heats itself up so radically, and even though cooling gel is applied prior, the experience can become quite unpleasant. That said, the results were instant and shockingly effective. My skin looked immediately tighter, brighter and more radiant. So much so, even my fairly unobservant husband noticed a change, complimenting me on my wrinkle-free,

Inspired by their fans, SJP, the leading lady and producer of both the SATC show and films, and her co-stars Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Catrall (they play Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha respectively) decided to bring back the fabulous foursome and take them on a glamorous, sun-drenched adventure that whisks the women away from NYC to Abu Dhabi. Over a perfect spring weekend in NYC just days before SATC 2 premieres in her hometown of New York, SJP shares the invaluable lessons she’s learned from

working and living for months in the Middle East and the fact that she actually loves the way women around the world consider her to be more like a personal friend than a fictional character or movie star. You’ve been playing the world’s favourite single girl, Carrie Bradshaw, for 12 years. What made you want to come back for a sequel? Doing a second movie wasn’t necessary, it wasn’t required. But Michael Patrick King (the writer/producer/director of the show

But as Carrie Bradshaw, you’re no longer the ultimate single girl. You’re now happily married to Big (played by actor Chris Noth). What’s there left to explore? I think that Carrie is learning what so many women learn when they finally get married and say ‘I do’. There is a huge difference between having a wedding and being married. This is about what happens after you say ‘I do’ and even more importantly, it’s about how as women and people we are always evolving. Like Carrie, we may spend the majority of our life single and then we are married. And that makes us ask how does the title of ‘Mrs’ affect a woman whose identity has been tied to the idea of being single? What does ‘happily ever after’ actually mean? Luckily for Carrie, and myself since I play her, she gets to go on an amazing holiday with her three best friends to the UAE to figure this all out. June 2010

As the producer of the film, what made you choose Abu Dhabi as the setting of the holiday in the sequel? It was actually prompted by Michael Patrick King. He wanted to take us out of our comfort zone and put us in a completely different culture so he thought of the Middle East, the new Middle East. And the UAE is now one of the most exotic, sought-after locations in the world, a place that is completely modern and entirely traditional and by having Carrie and company take a holiday in Abu Dhabi, our characters and audiences get to experience a lifestyle that most of us only dream about. And that’s the point of movies, to allow us to escape for a few hours and live vicariously through these four amazing women in a glamorous modern world that we may never have an opportunity to go to. Also, Michael wanted us to go global and portray a bigger world view of women because when we opened the first movie in cities like London and Berlin and Paris and Tokyo, we started to see that it was reaching more than just American women and that women around the world were identifying with these four characters, their storylines, and their issues. We might not all live in Manhattan and wear couture clothes, but as women our emotional experiences are universal. The outfits in SATC2 are incredible and so fun. What was it like having to dress for the Middle East? Culture shock doesn’t begin to explain what happens when abayas and Manolos meet under the desert sky. Thank goodness for our costume designer Pat Fields. Even though we used Morocco to stand in for Abu Dhabi in the film, Pat actually flew to the UAE to research the fashion and see what the environment was like so she could dress everyone from us four to all of the extras. She wanted it to be less about reality and more about fantasy, which Pat is so amazing at. But I know that she was really inspired by the UAE’s nightclub scene. Pat calls it a “mult-cultiâ€? place with every level of society. She loves that it’s so international. 72

After all these years with your co-stars Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Catrall, what was it like to reunite once again? There are so many rumours of catfights and stories of the four of you not getting along. It’s so strange and funny to hear that because by playing Carrie and spending so many hours and years with these three incredible women, I have learned how to be a better friend. I’m not saying that over the years all of us have not been sensitive and feelings haven’t gotten hurt, but at the end of the day I truly don’t have any regrets about how I’ve treated people. Actually, making this second film was such a great experience because for the first time in 12 years we had to live together for two months while on location in Morocco. We were all taken away from friends, family, children, husbands, boyfriends, the extended family, the extended family that is ours as grown-ups, and we lived together in the same hotel. I think it’s the best time we ever had as a group because we knew intimately what our experiences were. We weren’t working and then going home to the people I just mentioned. We were going home to each other and I think it was the best thing in the world for us. I don’t think we ever felt closer or more depended upon in a way that felt really nice. We were together all the time and that’s what we chose to do, eat together and live together and stay at the same hotels. It was just great. It was probably the best time we’ve ever had. In addition to producing and starring in SATC2, you’re still the spokesperson for Garnier, you launched your latest perfume SJP NYC, you’re the newly appointed president and chief creative officer of the couture line Halston (the Halston Heritage line specifically which is based on Halston’s legendary archives), and you’ve just added two beautiful little girls to your family with husband Matthew Broderick and son James Wilke. How do you do it all? That’s a good question! Well, I don’t make movies all the time and I only do things I’m passionate about. I guess time is what you make of it and I like to make the most of my time. I never want to stop learning, evolving, growing. I guess in certain ways, I’m a lot like Carrie. It’s all about evolution.

Sarah Jessica Parker is more than just a style icon thanks to Carrie Bradshaw. When Halston, the design house behind one of her favorite fashion idols, offered her the opportunity to head up the archive-inspired Halston Heritage line (the main line is designed by Marios Schwab) beginning with the Spring 2011 collection, SJP just couldn’t say no. “You have to realise that growing up in the 1970s in NYC, you couldn’t be alive and not know the name Halston.” Ray Halston, who rose to fame after designing the pill box hat that Jacqueline Kennedy wore to her husband JFK’s presidential inauguration, became a fashion legend synonymous with classically cut, simple, and elegant designs. He was the first major designer to begin licensing and launched the phenomenally successful fragrance line Halston. After opening his own salon in 1968, he quickly became the toast of New York’s fashion society. Halston’s close circle of friends and clients included Liza Minnelli, Barbara Walters, Martha Graham, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Andy Warhol and Elizabeth Taylor. As Halston’s career skyrocketed during the 1970s, his creations truly set the standard for American designers and he was seen as the undisputed high priest of fashion. Throughout most of the 70s he epitomised the glamour and decadence of the era and become a central figure in the nightlife scene of NYC’s famous Studio 54 disco. While Halston passed away in 1990, his designs and legacy continue to live on and with Marios Schwab and Sarah Jessica Parker on board, Halston is once again creating quite a stir on the fashion and film scene . ■

omen hate her. Men are intimidated by her. Ruthless and calculating at work, domineering and aggressive at home, she will let nothing stand in the way on her path to the top, be it family or friendships. She’s the much maligned “alpha woman – a self-serving sisterhood which includes the likes of US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and of course, ex-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. And then there’s the “beta woman, the nurturing and passive homemaker, dutiful wife and doting mother – think Jackie Kennedy or Katie Holmes. But how relevant are these stereotypes to today’s women? To get ahead do we really have to take on a masculine persona, and is the role of homemaker always passive? We speak to the experts about the new definitions of the alpha and beta female, and meet the women who are challenging the stereotypes.

TOUGH AT THE TOP It’s important not to confuse the alpha woman with her male equivalent, says Emily Cheyne, founder of knowhowlife, a Dubai-based professional life-coaching service. “Alpha males are perceived as bullying, selfish and will tread over people to get what they want, she explains. “Alpha females, however, will use their

GFBUVSF QTZDIPMPHZ emotional intelligence to lead in a successful way in the workplace without having a purposefully negative impact on others.” Even so, the mythical ‘glass ceiling’ still shapes how women are perceived in the workplace, says Dr Raymond H Hamden, Clinical and Forensic Psychologist at Dubai’s Human Resources Institute. “In spite of how we like to deny it, women in the workplace are still not taken as seriously as their male counterparts,” he says. “Women still report that they have to work twice as hard in their roles to be taken seriously, to prove that they are both capable and unemotional.” Zoe Baxter, who works at a senior level in a large multi-national construction firm, couldn’t agree more. “In my experience, I think you have to cultivate a certain amount of toughness working in a maledominated environment,” she explains. “I still have men asking me if I can get my boss to attend meetings to discuss technical questions which I’m perfectly capable of answering myself – that’s the reason I’m employed to do my job.” But why is female ambition so often seen as a negative trait? “It’s the classic case of men being assertive while women are aggressive,” says Emily. “Alpha women are driven and motivated, yes, but this does not mean that they will deliberately go out of their way to ruin others to get to the top.” Often, it’s other women who are perpetuating these negative stereotypes. “It should be about encouraging each other’s successes, not about backstabbing and sabotage,” says Sylvia Rodriguez, who works in media. “There’s still such a high school clique mentality among some women – they seriously need to grow up.” While alpha females may not be winning in the popularity stakes at work, it seems that it does indeed pay to be assertive. A recent study from the University of Essex in the UK revealed that alpha women can earn significantly more during their lifetimes than their less dominant, beta female colleagues. It discovered that women who were deemed to be ‘neurotic’ earned around three per cent less than their co-workers, although there was no such link for males who displayed the same personality traits. “I’ve heard too many times when people say, ‘we can’t trust people who get emotional, and all women are emotional, therefore we cannot rely on them in the workplace’,” says Dr Hamden. “It’s a false logic”, he adds, “but unfortunately one that seems to prevail.”

that women are second-class citizens. Today’s alpha and beta females are no longer polar opposites, and the majority of us display certain traits of both, whether it’s in our social or working relationships. “I only have my tough side at work,” says Zoe. “Outside of the workplace I try to be less aggressive – which is the hardest thing I find to set to one side! I am a woman and I like doing girly things and get really annoyed when people call me ‘one of the boys’ outside of work. I guess it’s a classic feminist issue: I demand to be treated equally at work, and in order to get that equal treatment I have to become more male in my behaviour. However, in my personal life I still want to be seen as a women and it’s very hard to balance the two.” It’s the other way round for Sylvia. “My friends call me the ‘tiny terror’,” she smiles. “Being female, Asian and just 5ft 1in, it’s not always easy to be taken seriously and sometimes being nice hasn’t got me anywhere. I guess I’ve had to develop an alter-ego which I use depending on the situation.” The queen bee of her social circle, she often finds herself frustrated that her colleagues and, more importantly, bosses, can’t seem to acknowledge this side of her at work. Because of this, she feels that there have been times when she hasn’t received the recognition and career progression that her hard work has deserved. “I think it’s mainly because I haven’t felt the need to shout or tell people off to get the job done,” she explains. “I know what I’m capable of and I don’t feel the need to advertise it.”

BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES Just as we should not assume that all alpha women are cold and aggressive, similarly beta women are not necessarily passive, says Emily. “They will challenge what they think is right, but are not driven as much as alpha females to succeed and achieve. They can still be career-minded, but they are not focused on becoming the most successful in their company.” In fact, the terms ‘aggressive’ and ‘passive’ are wrong and degrading, says Dr Hamden, and can imply 78

The boundaries have blurred in our romantic relationships, too. “Traditionally females have been socialized to give and follow, and these were often regarded as valuable qualities in a wife,” says Devika Singh, Psychologist and Learning Specialist at the Dubai Herbal and Treatment Centre. “However, recent research shows that many men now prefer their partners to be more independent, financially stable and able to make important decisions when necessary.” Sylvia wouldn’t have it any other way. “Who’d want to be with a man who doesn’t see his partner as his equal?” she says. “My boyfriend always encourages me to get ahead and to never settle for anything less than I deserve.” Zoe agrees, and doesn’t believe she would be attracted to someone with less drive than her. “I generally don’t gravitate towards people who aren’t dynamic and get-up-and-go types. I wouldn’t be comfortable spending time with anyone who is unhappy in a mediocre job – I would expect them to do something about it,” she says. “I suppose an equal would be lovely, but I’m not entirely sure he exists…” We should not undervalue the importance of our innate female qualities when it comes to personal relationships and

GFBUVSF QTZDIPMPHZ

GFBUVSF QTZDIPMPHZ family life, warns Dr Hamden. “The original beta woman would have misinterpreted her role as inferior to her partner, but this is wrong,” he explains. “Men and women should be equal and being a homemaker is as important as any other career. Equality is not about making up for the difference, equality is making the balance. And the balance is that men provide and protect and women nourish and bond.” Yet still some of the old stereotypes linger on. Men can feel threatened by alpha women, says Dr Hamden, seeing them as competitive and selfdirected. “Men are threatened by alpha women, without question,” says Zoe. “They are threatened by the fact that we have the power to earn more money, that we are focused on our career and possibly not as open to starting a family or settling down. Most men say they are fine with it, but when it comes to booking holidays or going out for expensive dinners, most will have a problem with the woman paying. While they might enjoy being spoiled from time to time, I don’t think any of them are happy with that being the default in a relationship.”

conversely, to beta women who aim to improve their career prospects by going back to education, or embarking on vocational training. “For me, the big thing was working 14 to 16 hours a day,” says Sarah Matthews, an events manager who recently left her highpowered and stressful job at one of Dubai’s busiest five-star hotels. “Getting home and thinking about work, waking up and thinking about work. It was soul destroying.” After a three-month sabbatical, she decided to go freelance and drastically scaled down her work commitments, a move that she does not regret. In fact, she’s relishing her new role. “I know it’s a fairly traditional viewpoint, but I really like running my own house now. For me, it was about finding the time to do all the things I wanted to do. It’s still early days, but I’m really happy with the way things are, I can still pick up freelance projects as and when I need to, but I feel like I’ve got my life back. Financially, there’s a lot more uncertainty, but on the whole I’m more than happy to bring in a lot less money and have a lot less stress.” It’s had a knock-on effect on her relationship with her husband too, she says. “He says I’m so much nicer now! Ultimately I’m a lot happier in myself and, of course, this is reflected in my relationship.”

CHANGING PRIORITIES Alpha and beta personalities are not a permanent personality trait. As our lives progress, our personal goals and priorities change, and women will tend to switch between being an alpha and a beta personality, or vice versa. “Personality is dynamic and fluid,” explains Devika. “Although genetics and biology play an important role in one’s personality make-up, it is just as important to consider an individual’s environment. The experiences brought on through someone’s environment can change personality preferences and as a result behavior can change. Of course, this doesn’t happen overnight and may take a number of experiences for this shift to occur, with each layer affecting an individual’s perceptual system.” Often this change occurs in alpha women who want to scale down their working life to dedicate more time to bringing up a family, or

POWER AND PERCEPTION When it comes to defining today’s alpha and beta women, it’s no longer a matter of traditional gender norms, and is more a case of who is actually doing the defining. “The perception really depends on the perceiver,” says Devika. “And personality traits that define alpha and beta women can be labeled advantageous or dysfunctional depending on the woman’s role within the larger system and the mindset of those around her.” So who ultimately has the better quality of life? Alpha and beta women have different life goals, explains Emily. “As long as we are both aware of what these goals are and are on the path to achieving them, then we can all be winners.” ■

leader and is as successful in his career as he is in his relationships.

ALPHA FEMALE The alpha female is often very different to the alpha male. Academically gifted, she may

be perceived as confident and domineering. “Although they’re similar to alpha males in their outlook and motivation to succeed, alpha females have to use their emotional intelligence to

come across as driven rather than aggressive,” says Emily Cheyne.

BETA MALE Beta males are typically seen as more submissive and hesitant than alphas. Not necessarily

less intelligent, they tend to be quieter and less confrontational. Followers rather than leaders, they are less likely to take risks.

BETA FEMALE Beta females are

portrayed as the exact opposite of the stereotypical alpha, and are typically gentler in nature. They are introverted rather than extrovert, polite rather than threatening and caring and nurturing as opposed to hostile and aggressive.

You might think that a vast European flagship store in Paris from one of the most iconic and quintessentially American designers would stick out like a sore thumb. But actually there is a lot in the classic Ralph Lauren signature which rings true with the innate Parisian sense of style. While it’s hard to imagine his spring/summer denim-on-denim clad farm-girl sloping down the streets of St Germain whilst chewing on a wheat stalk, autumn/ winter’s lady with her floaty floral chiffon, natty little knits and smartly tailored outerwear would be in her element tripping along by the banks of the River Seine. Describing the Ralph Lauren muse, the great man himself talks of “a woman who is not the obvious beauty, but a beauty that has a quality of charm and understatement. enduring glamour.” It’s this inherent sense of elegance and perfect ability to create an outfit, without being too obvious, that women have envied their French counterparts for decades. As Lauren points out, it isn’t just us mere mortals intrigued by the Franco-flair for fashion; artists and designers alike have for centuries looked to Paris for inspiration: “All the great writers and artists, many of them American, were drawn to Paris for its romance, history, culture and artistic spirit and I am by nature romantic.” Ralph’s love of glamour, mixed with a more utilitarian rusticity, does fit in rather well in this City of Lights. Although one can imagine the French turning their chic little noses up at too much of the rustic, there is a lot more at the heart of his offering this summer than denim baker boy caps and slacks. In fact, some of the pretty white ruffled dresses worn with sleek metallic heels would work rather well for a glamorous dinner date on the Champs-Élysées, and even this sparkling city might struggle to hold a candle up to the romantic pastel-perfection of the shimmering palest rose and crushed cornflower blue catwalk show finale gowns.

The cross-Atlantic love affair seems based on mutual affection, with French President Nicolas Sarkozy recently bestowing the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur on Ralph in recognition of his contributions as a designer, businessman and philanthropist in the fight against cancer. An award Lauren accepted, “not only for myself, but for my family and my country.” A central tenet of his philanthropic work is the Polo Ralph Foundation, which supports initiatives in cancer care and prevention, focusing on those who are under-served medically. One of the key aspects of this is the Ralph Lauren Centre for Cancer Care and Prevention which was formed in

GBTIJPO FYDMVTJWF 2003 when Polo Ralph Lauren partnered with America’s leading cancer hospital, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, and the North General Hospital in East Harlem New York. The centre is dedicated to providing high-quality screening, treatment and education for those affected by cancer in disadvantaged communities. As France’s highest national decoration, conferring the Chevalief LĂŠgion d’Honneur is a clear sign, if ever there was one, that Ralph is already a firm favourite in Paris; and that is even before they’ve tried his “favourite chocolate cakeâ€?, on offer in his store’s new in-house Ralph’s restaurant. So what of the designer’s American influence and heritage then? Well you need look no further than the restaurant, set in the extensive St Germain store. “I think the story of the menu is like the classic film An American in Paris. genuinely international. The contrast should be unique and memorable.â€? However, the menu itself is a mouth-watering feast of “genuine all-American food: great steaks, burgers, fries and lobster salad.â€? The beef is even raised on the RRL Ranch in Colorado. Ralph Lauren branded beef... who knew cows could be so stylish? Preceded only by the existing Ralph restaurant in Chicago, “it offers the visitor an opportunity to have a full experience: to arrive in the morning and sit with a cup of coffee before exploring the store, or meeting a friend for lunch before shopping, or gathering with friends and family for a relaxing dinner at the end of the day.â€? Ralph’s hugely successful global empire hasn’t been achieved by neglecting the small details, and he applies the same ultra-attentive approach to creating a dining experience as intricate as the all encompassing process of designing a collection: “When we sit down to eat, every detail has an influence on the enjoyment of the meal itself.â€? Expect impeccable linen, enviably attired attendants and a perfectly presented cuisine. Ralph’s, as with the rest of the boutique, has a decor accessorised with pieces from the Ralph Lauren Home Collection. Take a tour of the store’s super-chic interiors and you’ll come across another exciting milestone for the brand: the new watch salon, the first in France, and home to the three Ralph Lauren watch collections. Meanwhile, a store-within-a-store in the attic offers a more down-and-dirty selection of authentic, rugged RRL denim. This all sits within a très jolie exterior. In one of the most romantic areas of this, one of the world’s most romantic cities, the building is an hĂ´tel particulier: a grand old Parisian townhouse. The recent 40th anniversary of Ralph Lauren pales into insignificance compared to the building’s provenance back in the mid-1600s. Classical French architecture dominates with rich carving and ornamentation on a limestone facade, adorned with wrought-iron balconies and a traditional zinc-and-slate roof. Within, the restored French white-oak panelling, ‘Versailles’ style parquet flooring and traditional plaster mouldings and carvings add a refined air of old world glamour. The interior design perfectly epitomises the love-match between Ralph Lauren and Paris: old-school French rococo architectural details blend seamlessly with carefully selected pieces from his homewares collection, in a beautiful and elegant marriage of classic proportions and effortless style. Citing his travels as a major inspiration for his fashion collections, perhaps we can expect to see more obvious references to Paris creeping into the Ralph Lauren designs in the not so distant future. â–

You can almost sense that she has been raised surrounded by style; indeed her aristocratic Austrian grandmother, Lady Klaudia Mayer, the inspiration behind the much-lauded Atelier-Mayer vintage on-line boutique, had a haute couture salon that catered to the society ladies of Austria, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Carmen grew up in this rarified world, firmly ensconced amongst the fashion shows and fittings, finding scraps from the Atelier to dress her Barbie dolls. June 2010

It’s not often that you meet a bona fide insider when it comes to the world of luxury high fashion. This one time model and London College of Fashion graduate has worked in PR with some of the giants of the industry; she discretely mentions Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent (who personally gave her the statement-piece glass ring that she sports); Alber Elbaz and Hedi Slimane, the young geniuses who took over the womenswear and menswear prêt-a-porter collections when Saint Laurent concentrated on couture. She worked as head of PR with Tom Ford, and was at the forefront once the Gucci group started its streak of high profile acquisitions. A small family company was transforming into a luxury conglomerate, and Carmen was at the centre of it all. She then upped the ante and was poached by Gucci’s big rival LVMH to nurture their problem child, Celine, which she launched in the UK before turning her hand to Tommy Hilfiger; a global American brand with 12 lines to promote. So, how does a style savvy young woman with a PR fashion pedigree such as Carmen’s turn to individual, quirky vintage? “I personally always loved the vintage aesthetic even though I worked for the designer Emirates Woman 19.5x13.ai

names. My designer friends would rummage through my wardrobes and borrow items for inspiration; these items always became the best-sellers in their shows and it was then I realised that this was the basis for a business,” explains Carmen. Showcasing clothing and costume jewellery from 1900 to 2000, Carmen personally picks out each piece for her on-line boutique “My favourite period is from the 1920s to the end of the 1970s for vintage, and when it comes to the newer designers, Erdem, Christopher Kane, 2:33:41 PM

Philip Lim and Alexander Wang are on top of my list. The quirky Clements Ribeiro is also a firm favourite and has collaborated on the ‘half and half ’ collection, new designs made from vintage fabrics.” Carmen likens collecting her pieces with sourcing a book collection; she scours fairs and markets worldwide. Her new website, just over a year old, has been such a success that she is now opening a boutique on Kendal Street in London’s secret insider-haunt, Connaught Village in W2, (around the corner from

GBTIJPO POMJOF former PM Tony Blair’s house). Carmen says, “Vintage is very personal; it is a one-off, so I want my salon to reflect that special quality. Clients can sit on the terrace, sip bubbles and shop for vintage. I believe in high customer service – for me it’s not just about the brand names and labels, it is about the craftsmanship, fabrics and style. Once you start to understand vintage, the name doesn’t matter as much. On her recent visit to the UAE, Carmen brought all of her much-loved pieces with her so Dubai’s vintage lovers could get up close (and purchase) the best vintage in the world. In addition to the vintage Yves Saint Laurent Safari suit and Halston dancing dress, the accessories were as beautiful (and well-maintained) as they were in their heyday. The 1960s Christian Dior green earclips,1970s Pucci scarf, Chanel 1970s gold pendant necklace and an unworn 1970s Ungaro bikini were on top of our shopping list, closely followed by the gold 1970s Pierre Cardin evening bag and 1950s unworn Elsa Schiaparelli wedge slippers. Dubai is known for its obsession with all things big, brand new and bling, but do the city’s style sirens understand vintage? “People here are very fashion-savvy and advanced in their fashion, brand and trend knowledge. Sure, some love to wear new pieces, but the clientele who came to see me really appreciate vintage. They like to be different and to have a look that’s unique, explains Carmen. Testament to the city’s design sensibility is the fact that she promises to be back; extending her trip to include Beirut and Bahrain next time. Dubai’s fashionistas join heavy A-list hitters from the international scene who have already discovered the joy of donning a one-off, intricately-made, vintage piece and making it your own, rather than slavishly following what is photographed in advertisements and facing the dreaded inevitability of sporting the same outfit as your fiercest fashion rival. Carmen loves the elegance of Queen Rania of Jordan and the joie de vivre of YSL’s bohemian muse Loulou de la Falaise. Yet her roster of celebrity clients is a name-dropper’s dream; Kate Moss, Nicole Kidman, Rosamund Pike, Dannii and Kylie Minogue have all been Atelier-Mayer clad. ■www.atelier-mayer.com

pring/summer and autumn /winter – so far, so easy. Cruise, pre-fall and pre-spring – starting to get confused? Then, when Chanel decides to throw a Métiers d’Art collection into the mix too, we’re just about ready to throw in the fashion towel and set sail for an easier industry to understand. But dig a little deeper and channel your inner Chanel, and the Métiers d’Art collection is truly quite fascinating. With the manifesto to preserve the livelihoods of the Maisons d’Art, Chanel calls on the specialised

skills of master craftsmen. The metal worker Desrues, feather artist Lemarié, embroiderer Lesage, shoemaker Massaro, milliner Michel, goldsmith Goossens and florist Guillet are evocative of another era, one where the idea of mass production in fashion was a complete anathema. Showing each year in a different city, last year London, for Métiers d’Art 2010 Karl Lagerfeld chose Shanghai for its vibrant, cosmopolitan vibe. When it came to styling such a grand show, Karl took his inspiration from the Terracotta Army, the urban romanticism of

Chinese cinema and the opulence of the Imperial Court. As to be expected from the illustrious roll-call of artisans involved, the drama is in the detail, overflowing with rich embroidery and intricate structure. But the setting and showmanship plays an enthusiastic second fiddle, staged as it was on an 85-metre long barge floating on the Huangpu River. With such a genuinely exquisite collection and extraordinarily big budget production values, it looks like there is still definitely space and in today’s world for fabulously over the top fashion, Chanel style. . ringing one of France’s most iconic towns to a standstill is no mean feat, but thanks to Karl Lagerfeld and a handful of models such as Natasha Poly and Georgia May Jagger, this is exactly what happened at the Chanel Cruise show in St Tropez recently. Using the street as an impromptu catwalk, Chanel gave us a sexy, carefree and 70s inspired collection, showing off a mixture of hot pants, gipsy skirts and baby doll dresses. When it came to colour, Karl took a creative step outside his monochrome comfort zone by showing lashings of browns, greens and blues with the pièce de résistance of the collection his, glittering, shimmering, soon to be legendary, cardigans. ■

ashion can be a trend, an outfit or an accessory, and for the children of Al Noor, there is one accessory they are never without — a smile. On top of creating their individual bespoke dresses for our upcoming Fashion With A Heart event, our 10 local designers accompanied EW to The Al Noor Training Centre For Children With Special Needs to spend the day with the children who will benefit from the proceeds of the auctioned dresses. An eye-opening and touching experience, the day highlighted to us and the designers the need to not only help those less fortunate than ourselves, but the importance of looking at the wonderful work that happens on our doorstep – from the talents of our designers, to the creativity of the Al Noor teaching staff and the beauty of the children in their care.

THE COMPETITION Back in December, as part of our Diamond Issue, EW teamed up with jewellers Khalil Al Sayegh to give one reader the chance to win a beautiful and rare fancy yellow diamond which would then be custom-set into a unique and bespoke piece of jewellery worth Dhs100,000.

THE DIAMOND Choosing the diamond was the first port of call for Khalil Al Sayegh. “We wanted something that was going to be universal which would appeal to any woman, explains Amynah Hassanali, wife of Khalil Al Sayegh’s CEO. “We chose a

very special 1.23-carat oval cut fancy yellow diamond. So special in fact, that only one in every 100,000 diamonds can be classified as ‘fancy coloured’ and although they come in shades of pink, blue and even red, yellow is often classed as the most revered colour.

THE WINNER EW reader Suzie McCrum was the lucky winner and we met up with her at the Khalil Al Sayegh store in Deira on the day she received her diamond. “I entered the competition on my birthday, but I never thought I would actually win, laughs Suzie. “I completely forgot

about entering the competition, so when I received the call from Emirates Woman to let me know I had won, I nearly fell over.

THE DESIGN Suzie decided to transform her diamond into a ring, and identified the style and setting within minutes. “I came to Khalil Al Sayegh '03 .&/ to see the diamond. Amynah drew some sketches of what the ring could look like and showed me some samples of rings of varying shapes and sizes, explains Suzie. Amynah adds: “When a diamond is two carats or below we like to concentrate on the solitaire, and we decided since this was a yellow diamond, it was best to enhance the yellow. We gave Suzie a few options, but when we saw her, straight away we knew which one would be right for her. You have to meet a client to really know what will work best for them.

THE CHOSEN SETTING

“I generally like simple jewellery and I am a great believer in jewellery I can wear every day, explains Suzie. “There is no point having jewellery if you are not going to wear it, so I wanted to chose a ring design which I would be comfortable to wear day-to-day.

THE DIAMOND After the setting was chosen, Suzie’s diamond was sent to Khalil Al Sayegh’s team of craftsmen in Italy to be produced. “We don’t make anything in the UAE. We send all our jewellery to Hong Kong or Italy as they have the technical expertise to guarantee the highest quality,â€? explains Amynah. And eight weeks later, Suzie’s ring was complete. “I absolutely love the ring. Khalil Al Sayegh have done a fantastic job and I feel very privileged to have a fancy yellow diamond ring. I would like to thank both Emirates Woman and Khalil Al Sayegh for making this happen.â€? â–

As a purveyor of classic and elegant jewellery, Suzie opted for a simple micro pave setting. June 2010

ith the recent official opening of its Dubai Mall boutique, DSquared2 is certainly making its mark in the fashion world. Dean and Dan, the twins behind the designs, feel it’s an important step, helping people understand the “full DSquared2 message in a way that is difficult in a department store. It’s only when you step into their boutique that you truly understand what they mean. A little wood-lined haven in homage to the Canadian wilderness, with faux wood fires burning in the changing rooms, antler light fixtures, maple leaf motifs, and an interior which feels like a log cabin, this really isn’t just another sleek monochrome high-end store. It’s this commitment which sets their collections apart, and an ability to take lowbrow references and bring them to life with a high-fashion execution. Where some designers might only show a couple of ultimately un-wearable pieces on the runway which really epitomise their ‘inspiration’ that season, DSquared2 is distilling and refining their themes so they remain obvious, yet stylish. You don’t need to work your way through interpretive layers to see the references to camping in the spring/summer collection. Yet the

cheeky white tunic dress, embellished with a party of little crystal ants processing over the shoulder, is totally wearable. The camping story was born after a recent trip in the great outdoors. “When you camp in Canada you are alone and you sleep next to a lake and wake up with the birds singing. You can go hiking and canoeing and it’s so much funâ€?, explains Dan. Goodness only knows where the duo was hanging out before they put pen to paper for the autumn/winter offering, which is: “a mad scientist with a weird twist, all chic-ed out and wearing latex accessoriesâ€? smiles Dean. The tight LBD with cut-out back panel, latticed over by a crystal skeleton is a little McQueenesque, and with the boys’ distain of ‘flimsy construction’ the skill of craftsmanship is guaranteed. Forget kitten heels and clogs: the must-have shoe for autumn/winter comes teetering with a section of spine replacing the heel... you read it here first. â–

SIGNATURE STYLE

“When I was younger, I wanted to be a sculptor – which is probably where my passion for styling and my attention to detail originates from. However, my father had different plans, pushing me to be a lawyer. But, when I was 27 and working in New York as a stylist, I woke up one day and thought ‘this is so me’ and I felt so confident.

“It is never about creating or following trends – I focus on the moment, the mood, the personality, wanting to create something effortless that enhances what you already have. Which is why our consultations have become so well-known – we spend time with our customers getting to know them, their lifestyle, their mind, their personality, how they dress‌ we create and complement the whole ensemble.â€?

THE FRÉDÉRIC FEKKAI PHILOSOPHY “Faultless and seamless, not rigid and false. Hair is your greatest accessory because it’s so versatile – you can do different styles, looks, highlights and have fun playing with it. It can transform you or enhance your features and should feed your personality – working with your face, not against it. A dress can do it temporarily, but hair is instant.â€? 118

STYLING THIS SEASON “This summer it’s about un-constructed, imperfect, textured and natural hair and highlights. Think free-style, with long layers, waves, bangs swept to the side, low on the neck ‌ loose and fun, like a modern ‘shag’. It will look just as great with jeans, as with a dress.â€?

should do a glaze, which will make the colour more vibrant, or a rejuvenating treatment which will bring a little bit more protein to the hair. Your hair needs a check-up every now and then and needs just as much TLC as the rest of your face and body.

HOT OFF THE SHELVES “The Glossing cream is a best-seller, as it instantly manages the texture of your hair, taking away frizz and bringing shine and separation. The Technician Shampoo is amazing for colour-treated hair, as its unique protection enhances the colour and natural sheen. And for women in the Middle East, the Shea Butter line is great for the heat , while the Overnight Hair Repair moisturises and oxidises the blood and exercises the follicles as you sleep, helping the hair to get stronger.

IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER “Going into winter, hair usually gets a little longer and less layered. It’s about the texture of the hair, because it can get very flat in the cold. So when autumn and winter come, make sure you give great body to your air by crunching it. Also use hair treatments and products to keep it looking shiny and healthy.

SAY GOODBYE TO BAD HAIR DAYS “Today they are unacceptable. With the technology of products available you can manage your hair no matter what. Rain, sun, wind‌ it’s about using what you have and the products available to you.â€?

THAT’S LIFE “I spend much of my life travelling, but always try to make it home for weekends. And when I do have a break, I go back to my hometown of Provence, or skiing in Colorado or the Alps – I’m an avid skier. ■For more information, visit www.fekkai.com

FRINGE BENEFITS “I created the Heidi Klum fringè, but I didn’t plan for it to become a trend – it’s just what was right for her at the time. She wanted something different, I came up with the fringe and it became a success.â€?

LITTLE BLACK BOOK “I’ve been so fortunate to have amazing clients – from the beginning with Jodie Foster, Jessica Lange, Hilary Clinton and Meryl Streep to today, with Scarlett Johansson, Naomi Watts, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek. It’s different generations and they are all very much of the moment.

DEFINING MOMENT “About six years ago I was at the Cannes Film Festival and was called by Elizabeth Taylor’s office with a last-minute request to do her hair. I was already doing Salma Hayek and Naomi Watts’ hair and I was frustrated I couldn’t fit her in. But they wouldn’t take no for an answer, so they sent the French Police on motorcycles to escort me to Elizabeth’s hotel so I could do her hair in time – incredibly surreal.

SPORTING TRESSES “For women who do a lot of exercise, you should wash your hair every day, but it’s about more than just the shampoo and conditioner – every once in a while you

DIY FrÊdÊric Fekkai Don’t try too hard. Keep your hair natural – with colour and texture. Do the best with what you have – it’s always better and there’s always a solution. Cut your hair every 4-8 weeks. Wash your hair with apple cider vinegar to get rid of deposits from the harsh UAE water. Avoid hair extensions, as they damage your hair when taken out. Hair isn’t about age, it’s about attitude and lifestyle. Adapt to those. If you have straight hair, brush it upside down three times a day to give it lift. Hair should be about shine, body and texture – everything else follows.

he days before the annual summer holiday are usually taken up with last minute shopping, packing and preening to ensure you look beach-beautiful as soon as you step off the plane. As vital as it is to pack your perfect wardrobe, your beauty routine pre-take off is just as important. The key to looking your best beauty-wise is to leave your treatments to the latest date possible – think three days before departure. Start with a hammam, which will give you a full overall body treatment – simply the best is The One and Only Royal Mirage. Your locks are your next priority, which will need a trim, colour (if you need) and a moisturising treatment to ensure your hair is in the best condition before a holiday in the sun. Next comes the defuzzing. Try Eternal Med Spa’s lazer hair removal for best results. For those who like a little fake base tan before your trip, wait until the day after your waxing to apply. Last on your list should be a manicure and pedicure to ensure you’re beach ready from top to toe. f excess kilos are a worry when packing, don’t ditch your basic beauty essentials for another pair of Manolos – your cleanser, toner and moisturiser (at the very least), will be much more useful than a pair of sky high heels in the sand. And don’t think that just because you’re on holiday and you have the ok to let your day-to-day routine fly out the window, that your beauty routine can slip. This is when your skin needs it the most. Number one on your beauty priority list has to be sun protection, and don’t even take a step outside without a minimum of SPF15 on your body and preferably SPF50 on your face to keep the ageing lines and sun spots at bay. In any climate keeping hydrated is imperative through drinking water, and replenishing the skin’s lost water when in the sun is essential with a daily after-sun lotion. Showering with 124

A great trick for simple yet effective make-up is to use your bronzer not only on the cheeks, but swept across eyelids as a subtle and natural eyeshadow.

:PVS GPSFDBTU GPS UIJT NPOUI CANCER (Jun 22 – Jul 23) June will be alive with bright ideas that you’re determined to see put into action – your way. Your stubborn streak hits someone hard on Friday 17th, when Mars adds fuel to the fire. But a bit of soul-searching allows you room for manoeuvre and by the start of July, your pace of life will mirror those around you.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 – Feb 19) The cosmos is turning you into a cash magnet, but when the chips come in, you’d be smart to save not splurge. Voices in your head will see you torn between two decisions on Monday 21st – one safe, one risky. Before committing, think of long-term goals over short-term gains. Help is also at hand, but it might be you doing the offering on Wednesday 16th.

LEO (Jul 24 – Aug 23) Feeling lucky has enabled you to stretch yourself further than before, and on Sunday 20th, the new dizzying heights you’ve reached will reap financial benefits, too. Keep your appearance up wherever you go to match your new-found courage. Give someone a chance on Thursday 3rd – and share your good fortune. VIRGO (Aug 24 – Sep 23) Routine has its merits, but more can be said of testing unchartered waters. Take Wednesday 23rd as your green light to break old habits and create new ones. Dress differently, change your daily routine and act as the new improved you. Being positive ticks all the right vibe boxes with Tuesday 29th offering a lifealtering experience. LIBRA (Sep 24 – Oct 22) An intoxicating blend of benevolence fills your world, and with this gift of goodness, you have the power to do great things. By Monday 21st the focus of your relationships is redirected to mutual satisfaction, allowing both parties to benefit. Strike gently but forcibly on Friday 4th to ensure maximum effect.

PISCES (Feb 20 – Mar 20) Suppressing sentimentality might be a more modern approach, but Friday 18th warrants grand gestures. Lunar activity in Pisces hints of a wrongful undoing, but guilt is sugar-coated in white lies and best intentions, so leave judgments at home. Approach a friend with caution on Thursday 24th, as tempers may flare.

Most of our fears are self-inflicted, often rendering us useless, but all (May 22 – Jun 21) obstacles are surmountable when looked at from the right angle. Your mood darkens by Tuesday 8th, but a fresh opinion will help blow away the clouds, leaving you with a clear light directing you back to safer ground. Self-confidence will be key.

GEMINI

SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 22) You’re in a hurry this month to experience everything right now. But slowing down will allow you to see the beauty in what you’re doing. From Sunday 6th onwards, romance plays its card and alerts you to some much-warranted attention. Be open to suggestion, as this is one experience that will be flooded with memories. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21) Your classic Sagittarian qualities may back you into a corner, but explore new avenues to turn it into a positive experience. Monday 14th asks that

you focus on the past, so that you may unlock a secret to your present. Venus is riding high and friendships will benefit its good mood. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 20) Spirit is key to sparing yourself the anxiety of old wrongs. Mistakes are just miss-takes and everyone deserves a Take Two. Use your spirit freely on Saturday 12th and the winds of change will usher you towards a revelatory announcement. Freedom is your greatest virtue, so explore wherever the mood takes you.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Mercury’s influence might procure a diary teeming with social invitations, but quality over quantity is key to save being accused of fickle friendships. The easy life isn’t always the good life, and a decision on Tuesday 8th will offer you a road less travelled, but one paved with golden opportunities. Take it. TAURUS (Apr 21 –May 21) Planetary alignments signal a struggle between your head and heart. All will be clear by Friday 18th, so let patience reign supreme until then. Take heed of a friendly warning that comes knocking on Thursday 3rd, the consequences will be both satisfying and enriching, with a long-off goal brought within reach. ■ June 2010
