alf Egyptian half Turkish influencer Zeynab El-Helw has been adjusting to a new life rhythm. If previously she spent much of her time on set or travelling the world to sit front row at fashion shows, she now has someone else demanding her attention, her son Luca who recently turned one. Regularly sharing her motherhood journey with her 1.4 million Instagram followers, she looks back on her own childhood, shares her experience of pregnancy and birth, the support network she created around herself and what she has learnt from the first year of being a parent. What was your childhood like? I grew up in London, a family of five; my twin brother, my older brother and myself. We spent a lot of time outdoors and our parents indulged us with sports and music. We travelled a lot too; therefore, we would spend long summers away in Egypt and Turkey with our extended families. Looking back, these were my favourite memories of all time.
Was pregnancy what you expected? Didn’t know what to expect! I never could imagine myself pregnant. Let’s just say it’s even better than expected, an eventful year filled with many new chapters. Everything was new to me, which made it even more exciting. I did continue my life in the same manner, just slowed down and rested when I was tired. Strangely enough, I had boosts of energy, which enabled me to enjoy the journey. How did you feel about your body changing? I found it fascinating as the idea of a foetus developing inside me into a baby and the fact my body was making space for it and a safe zone was incredible and bizarre at the same time. I read a lot over this period and can only say once the kicks started that’s when it started to hit me that there was a living soul all cuddled up inside. I was very eager to embrace motherhood and Luca. Eventually, I did revert to wearing loose and comfortable clothing as my bump grew and always tried to make it as stylish as possible. I launched a maternity line at that time as I found it quite difficult to

find pretty clothing that are flattering and fit well. Any baby books/apps/films/podcasts you’d recommend? ‘What To Expect When Not Expecting’, ‘Back Up Plan’ and ‘Knocked Up’ were humorous movies I related to and I did use the time to read and learn as much as I could. Books I found very useful were ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’, ‘Your Baby Week By Week’ and ‘The First Year’ were words I lived by and still refer to now and then amongst others, of course, the list is endless. Also, there are some fantastic apps I would refer to numerous times a day such as the ‘Baby Centre’, ‘Baby +’ that share the development and allow you to document the journey day by day. Moreover, ‘Little Ones’ got me prepared for birth and introducing the sleeping routine. Till today I refer to it occasionally for tips when Luca goes through a sleep regression. Talk us through your birth plan, did you know exactly how you wanted it to go or did you approach it with an open mind? I had an open mind about it all, as I know that you can’t expect your plan to be exactly what you desire and you just want the safest method as you can imagine. I did seek a natural birth, which turned out to be quite successful and luckily I had a smooth birth. My water broke outside of Starbucks in front of the hospital a week before my due date! How important do you think it is for women to share their pregnancy journeys and birth experiences? Talking with other women about my pregnancy journey helped me so much as mentally and physically there are so many elements to learn and pick up along the way, which you would naturally miss in a book for example. Otherwise, mental support is so valuable to know you’re not alone in this and it’s okay not to know it all. I realise looking back that no matter how much you prepare in advance; it’s completely different going through it. 20
How did the name Luca come about? There were two solid reasons the name came about, as we wanted to choose a name that was sentimental to us. Most importantly my husband proposed to me in Italy on the Amalfi coast near a small town named Lucca so at the time I didn’t think anything of it yet later it came to my attention that it subconsciously was hovering in my mind. Moreover, my husband’s favourite basketball player is called Luka, therefore, we found a midpoint with the spelling ‘Luca’ which is a name we’re very fond with. How did those first few weeks of being parents feel? Was it what you expected? It was surreal and very emotional – it took a very long time to sink in and realise that we are parents and that we had a new bundle of joy! It was exciting and nervewracking at the same time, as we wanted to be and do the best for him. We didn’t sleep much for weeks on end but it was worth every minute and we were lucky enough to have support from our families to help through those sleepless nights. Newborn weeks are extremely challenging, how did you divide up the tasks? My husband and I were very aligned in having a system in place and were lucky to have our parents take turns to ease the challenge when necessary. I believe the closeness of the parents is essential to maintain the necessary support. It is a difficult period and sleep is underrated therefore it is significant to squeeze in those naps as much as possible. The best advice was to nap when the baby naps which we found quite challenging, as we were too excited and overwhelmed to sleep. In a way, we were running on reserve fuel and naturally were worried about the baby. Who else did you turn to for support? We did introduce a sleep consultant on board for a short period to help Luca learn to sleep in his cot and set him into a rhythm as with breastfeeding, as much as I love it, it also becomes a form of com-

e have come a long way since the day where new mothers had to stay home as their sole role, yet now there can be the challenge to try and balance it all. It’s not easy, and at times you can feel the “mum guilt” but putting yourself first on occasion can do wonders for your home life, and inspire the little ones to see no boundaries in what they can achieve themselves. We speak to three high-powered mothers from the region and beyond who have made it their career to make the balance tip in their favour.

How has your career mindset changed since having children?

My happiness in my career has come from the perfect balance between my family and work life, managing the time for both is extremely important to me. I’m a full-time businesswoman but also a mum. Each day is completely different. I multitask on so many things, both work and personal life at the same time. How did it feel going back to work? As a CEO and artistic director I never really left my job for time off as I continued to remain updated with all things Messika. I love my job and feel honoured to have the career that I do, but I also make sure to enjoy every moment of my children. There are momentous career moments that are missed, for example, I couldn’t be at the opening of my flagship store on rue Saint-Honoré because I was giving birth to my second daughter that day. However, I am so lucky I have the career and family life that I do.
What do you do to set boundaries between work and family? Messika Paris is at foremost a family business, so work and family are closely linked. My job is about my family story and Messika showcases the origins of how my family created the brand. We are an extremely strong and close family unit, that gets involved in all things work. I couldn’t imagine my everyday-life without them. During those moments of madness, how do you find calm and balance? I am lucky to be well surrounded by my family, which is very important for me. Taking a moment to spend some time outdoors, relaxing in fresh air either by myself or with my daughters is the perfect way to find calm. Do you have any rituals or mindfulness practices for personal wellbeing? I have a personal fitness coach and I do yoga. I also use an app for meditation.

sion will make my daughters want to succeed themselves and find their own passion. They will be guided by the same inner flame and drive when they grow up. It is important to have an amazing balance of both, but it is also good to never put pressure on yourself to have this perfect balance constantly – doing your best and putting your passion and love into your family and career is key.

fulfil your dream. I try to pass down my passion to my girls. My daughters are still young, they don’t know exactly what we do but they understand that we work on amazing creations. What have you learnt about yourself as a mother and a career woman since having children? I have learnt that being a mum who has made her work her pas-

Once I got this into my head I went back to enjoying my work because I felt the purpose again. My life had changed, every tiny particle of it and that scared me initially, there was so much to juggle, the working mum guilt mixed with the desire to still be on my A-game. I had to rejig what that meant to survive! What I figured out was once I accepted that things weren’t going to go back to what they were I was more comfortable with what it was. My life is different, not completely unrecognisable, but different. Ambition and motherhood can go hand in hand you just need to learn to give yourself a break, you’re doing the best you can.

How did it feel going back to work? Bone-shaking anxiety! What do you do to set boundaries between work and family? I’m not sure how good I am at this but when I leave work my full attention is on my son and the family time we have before it’s bedtime. Whatever comes in from work after I leave office I hop back online after he’s asleep. It can wait but those precious little moments at bath time or quiet time reading his favourite book won’t. I tell myself to

always be present in whatever situation I am in so I get the most out of it. When I work I give it my all, when I’m with my son I give him everything I can. How do you tackle “mum guilt”? I won’t lie, it is hard. I think if I’m going to leave my son every day then I want to have an impact and ensure the work I do really matters, that one day he’ll be proud of what his mum achieved. During those moments of madness, how do you find calm and balance? I honestly just tell
myself I can do it. If my mum could bring up 3 children alone and still hold down a career then goodness, I’ve got this too. Self-belief, being your own cheerleader, taking it one day at a time. I can only do so much and I know that now. Do you have any rituals or mindfulness practices for personal wellbeing? Not straight off the back but I realised that a happy mother is what my child needs so I do take time to focus on me too. I don’t have space in the day to go to classes so I love the Melissa Wood Health app; I can do a quick Pilates or meditation session in 20 minutes and feel great afterwards. What do you hope your son will take away from seeing their mum build a career? I hope he’s proud. I hope it teaches him to aim high, that he can achieve anything he sets his mind on. I hope he understands that he won’t win at everything and that’s okay, there will be setbacks and that’s okay too. But set goals, work hard, be a dreamer, enjoy life to its fullest. What have you learnt about yourself as a mother and a career woman since having children? I can honestly say that having my son is the best thing that has ever happened to me but it also terrified me at the beginning. Life won’t be the same but that’s growth and that’s the beauty of it.

between having my 2nd child to when my 3rd child went to school. I was going into a brand new industry, so it was a large leap of faith and I was nervous. However, my family was always there to provide me with the support needed and I think that gave me the confidence to stick it through. What do you do to set boundaries between work and family? I don’t set hard boundaries. It’s all about communication, and that’s in all directions. Be it if I have to miss a school pick up once in a while, then I support my kids with their work or set aside some time to just be with them. During those moments of madness, how do you find calm and balance? I tend to fall back on systematic problem-solving in most situations. So, taking the time to identify what is creating the madness, and then breaking down the tasks into achievable ones to get through it. Do you have any rituals or mindfulness practices for personal wellbeing? I practice yoga regularly, and I also enjoy guided meditations. What do you hope your children will take away from seeing their mum build a career? Dedication and drawing your path, no matter what it looks like. What have you learnt about yourself as a mother and a career woman since having children? opular Abu Dhabi-based fashion blogger Dana Ahmed may seem like she has the perfect life from her fabulous Instagram feed – and she definitely does. However, that doesn’t mean she won’t go through the same guilt many other mothers can feel, particularly when it involves leaving your children to go to work. Luckily, Dana has found a wonderfully supportive community after starting her blog – which has seen her collaborate with some superlative brands including NET-A-PORTER, Dior and Max Mara. She talks to us about balancing work and parenting, what her life was like before becoming a mum to two-year-old Adnan and what her biggest take away she has learnt becoming a mother. Life and career before becoming a mother. I used to work at an insurance company full time and had my fashion blog as well. How life changed once she became a mother. First, I quit my job at the insurance company – I wanted to spend time with my first born kid more than anything. But at the same time, I kept my social media accounts and I tried to share my journey as a mum with my followers. I’ve noticed that I gained so many wonderful mum followers who loved reading and following my journey. To be honest, I couldn’t give more to my office job anymore. I wanted to do something I love, whilst having my baby next to me.
How quickly she returned to work after having her son. As a fashion blogger, I took a very short break when I first delivered as I was so overwhelmed with everything happening. Then I went back to sharing my diaries with my followers, but this time as a new mum. The hardest thing about being a working mum. I think the hardest thing is when I have to leave my baby for a whole day shoot, or travel without him. How her style has changed since becoming a mum. I don’t think my style changed, now I just like to go more with casual or street style looks – and thankfully it’s so trendy at this moment. It’s more comfortable especially I will be running around with my kid, carrying his bag, my bag and sometimes carrying him. How her beauty routine changed since becoming a mum. I’m focusing more now on skin care routines, because the better your skin is, the less makeup you need and as a mum, and now I have less time for makeup than before! Her top parenting tips. Be you, follow your instincts and don’t compare yourself to any other parent. Yes, take advice, but sometimes what works for others might not work for you. The biggest thing she’s learnt since becoming a mum. The biggest take away since becoming a mum is how my priorities have changed, material items means less to me.
