Fujairah

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A massive and unprecedented transformation of transport infrastructure is taking place in Fujairah. The substantial investments being made by the government are intended to increase the GDP of Fujairah, to diversify the economy and to project Fujairah at the global stage in terms of logistics, tourism, financial market and trading infrastructure. At the epicenter of this transformation is Fujairah International Airport (FIA) which is a vital component of the overall transportation network. It will contribute directly to emirates’ regional and international competitiveness and the flow of foreign investment. FIA is destined to be a multimodal/functional business generating considerable commercial development both inside and outside of its boundaries. Hundreds of millions of dirhams are being spent by different sources in the infrastructure development of the Fujairah International Airport (FIA). The strategy is to consolidate cargo business, passenger traffic, be a magnet for MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) business and to capture upto 10% of the UAE’s thriving business jet market. Our vision for the airport is to support and integrate with the development of the Emirate of Fujairah. By the time the airport projects are completed, it will add billions of dirhams to the economy, and become a major direct and indirect employment generator, with profound social and environmental benefits and provide a boost to the emirate’s international trade and tourism. The airport will emerge as the preferred choice for learning and employment by having centers of excellence in aviation. FIA will serve to reinforce Fujairah’s position as the leading emerging airport hub for both cargo and leisure traffic. In this Yearbook we bring to you a brief but meaningful insight into Fujairah International Airport. Clearly FIA is set to redefine the UAE’s aviation scene and this is just the beginning. His Excellency Mohamed Abdulla Sultan Al Salami Chairman of Fujairah Department of Civil Aviation

general manager’s message Fujairah is gearing towards speed, mobility and global access through an ambitious development plan for Fujairah. In the emirate’s economy, Fujairah International Airport’s role has been envisaged as the one to provide a boost to international trade and tourism and enhance the emirate’s image in the world, to provide the airport’s cargo and passenger capacity ahead of demand, to provide efficient multi-modal linkages; to ensure total safety and security of aircraft operations; better passenger comfort; and creation of jobs. With a strategic location, an open-skies policy, highly competitive handling rates, first-rate facilitation services, and more personalized and efficient service, Fujairah International Airport adds new dimensions to the UAE’s aviation scene. Fujairah International Airport is evolving as the ideal trading and transit point in the booming sea-air cargo business between East and West. With multiple commercial opportunities being exploited, Fujairah International Airport is also increasingly being viewed as a ‘business oriented’ airport. At the same time we are keenly exploring nonaeronautical business avenues such as wider MRO and aircraft support operations. We take great pride in the remarkable progress we are making at Fujairah International Airport, but this is just the beginning. The future will see Fujairah International Airport cement its reputation as an aeronautical hub, not just for the UAE but for the greater Middle East region as well. Our Yearbook will give you a convincing glimpse into the developments at Fujairah International Airport and how we are preparing for a challenging yet exciting future. FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ADDING A NEW DIMENSION TO THE UAE’S AVIATION SECTOR

A

s the emirate of Fujairah rapidly progresses towards establishing itself as a strategic energy and shipping hub, Fujairah International Airport (FIA) is playing a pivotal role in the emirate’s growing economy. Established in 1987, FIA enjoys a highly strategic location which is complemented with cutting-edge technology and efficient services. More and more countries are looking to Fujairah as an ideal cargo hub and a destination of choice for holiday travel. Fujairah is a strategically located emirate – the only one outside of the Strait of Hormuz. As such Fujairah International Airport is the only airport serving the UAE’s east coast and Northern Oman. Apart from its close proximity to Europe and East Asia, FIA has also streamlined

8

its security and customs procedures with these countries, making it a preferred transit point for the re-export trade between these two areas. FIA is in close vicinity of the sea port (the second largest bunkering port globally) enabling it to handle sea-air cargo movements more efficiently than other airports. With the other emirates all within a three-hour driving distance, FIA’s stateof-the-art facilities and proficient services make it an ideal gateway to the UAE. Fujairah International Airport continues to add a new dimension to the UAE’s aviation industry. From its renowned cargo handling capabilities to its newly launched domestic flights to the capital city Abu Dhabi, FIA reflects the Emirate’s growing importance as a dynamic center for aviation, commerce and tourism activities. ujairah International has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1987. Under the directives of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Fujairah and the able guidance of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, FIA has evolved into a modern and convenient transit points for goods and passengers. The regional aviation industry is highly appreciative of the benefits offered at Fujairah International Airport, such as its open sky policy, low handling rates and very competitive fuel

rates which make it attractive to cargo handlers. Personalized services and a highly flexible work and service attitude means FIA is able to offer its clients and industry partners custom-made solutions for all their needs. Situated at a strategic point linking the east and west, it maintains a positive reputation for providing the most up-to-date facilities to passengers and air cargo operators.

EXPANSION With a host of ambitious expansion plans underway, FIA is cementing its position as a world class airport in the UAE and Middle East.

11

Under construction is the Skyone Maintenance Services MRO Hangar, which will serve Airbus and Boeing aircraft. The size of the hangar will be able to accommodate four A320 or two A340 aircraft. Skyone Maintenance Services has invested $25 million (Dh91.8 million), and the airport will spend Dh70 million on the maintenance center. The airport is also working on bringing other maintenance companies to provide aircraft maintenance work, as well as storage of aircraft spare parts, by building many maintenance workshops. With increased airport operations in terms of aircraft movements, passengers and cargo, FIA has recently completed a new airline office building which will have 60 offices, training and conference rooms. A General Aviation centre comprising of two private hangars, operations building, facilities for Aviation Academy and a hangar for maintenance for small and business jet aircraft, are planned to follow. Renovation and expansion of the ATC and RFFS building will see an improvement of the facility making it capable of meeting training and operational demands of the future. FIA has an annual capacity for two million passengers. Cargo makes up 80 per cent of the flights. With more hangars, maintenance, MRO workshops, the airport will see an increase in capacity for business jets and offer a lower cost for the country’s aircraft servicing needs. While attracting business from neighboring airports, the Airport Authority is also in talks with more companies to increase traffic from European, Far Eastern and African destinations.

OPEN SKY POLICY Fujairah has adopted an open-sky policy and even open ground policy which allows airline

12

traffic from all over the world hassle free access to the airport. Enhancing this policy are the competitive landing and handling rates and modern equipment and infrastructure. These features have resulted in a flexibility and competitiveness that attracts both large and small operators, keen to take advantage of the opportunities that await them at FIA. FIA is also a popular stopover for airlines which cannot access the Northern Emirates’ airports due to inclement weather or congestion.

FIA has been gradually expanding its private charter or business jet revenues and is now looking into non-aeronautical business streams. With strategic partner Aurora Aviation, VIP and Executive flights and passengers are assured of superior and efficient services from the dedicated FBO provider.

With a host of ambitious expansion plans underway, FIA is cementing its position as a world class airport in the UAE and Middle East

AIRCRAFt DISMANtLING CENtRE

AIRCRAFt MAINtENANCE

The near future will see FIA position itself as the UAE’s aircraft-dismantling centre as it invests hundreds of millions of dirhams in infrastructure development. The airport is building long-term aircraft parking for up to 50 aircraft, with space for two to four aircraft dismantling companies. FIA enjoys year-round environmental conditions which are conducive to aircraft storage and dismantling and can provide full life-cycle services such as maintenance, storage and end-of-service dismantling/materials reclamation. There is an industrial area immediately adjacent to the airport with scrap material merchants resulting in lower transportation costs.

FIA has multiple areas available for any size maintenance operations including the newly construc ted Maintenance Workshops and Maintenance Apron. FIA also offers airlines the facility to construct their own maintenance hangar. The completion of the large Skyone Maintenance Services hangar will boost the availability of hangarage as well as maintenance service provision.

COMPLEtE SECURItY FIA employ high tech biometric identit y recognition systems-computer-driven applications that identify a person from a digital image. Recognized as the future of airport security, more than 30 biometric security points have been installed in the new passenger terminal at FIA, both as part of the emirate’s border control system and to limit access at various points within the airport to control and monitor the movement of personnel and passengers around the facility. This power ful, flexible and failure-proof access control system at the new state of the art terminal at FIA employs finger print scanning, iris recognition systems and e-gate cards for passengers at border control points and customers checks, as well as at different parts of the airport with limited access, including its business class lounge. FREIGHT FORWARD

FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: THE REGION’S PREFERRED CARGO HUB

F

ujairah International Airport has earned a reputation for being the ideal trading and transit point in the booming sea-air cargo business between East and West. Today, air freight accounts for around 90% of FIA’s traffic movements.

TWIN-PORT ADVANTAGE FIA’s state- of-the-ar t facilities and highly professional services are complemented by the presence of a modern deep-water port just 5kms away. Handling more than half a million T.E.U. per year and located outside the Strait of Hormuz, the port has become a “mother port” for the region. The full-fledged cargo complex at FIA, with its fully automated cargo handling system serves as a break bulk center – freight is taken from the seaport and loaded onto various cargo flights. Under the aegis of a single custom authority, clearance and forwarding operations are smooth and hassle free thereby, attracting greater volumes and making Fujairah a hub in global freight movement. The efficiency and lack of congestion means that cargo from other sea ports such as Jebel Ali are often transported by road to Fujairah International Airport for onward flights. Another principal area of promise is the Emirate’s Free Trade Zone, which has been established in the port vicinity and offers some of the most attractive schemes and concessionary terms.

FIRM FAVOURITE Cargo airlines favour FIA due to its unrivalled combination of competitive landing, ground handling and parking rates; responsiveness FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT YEARBOOK

and availability of capacity. Its modest size is a hidden advantage as all clients are extended personalized services. FIA is renowned for maintaining an elaborate and meticulous approach in all its air cargo-related dealings. The Airport follows strict procedures of import and export to maximize speed and efficiency and minimize risks and inconvenience. FIA also, actively invites cargo airlines from around the globe to establish a regional base at their premises. This move has helped open up new routes to des tinations in India, Pakistan, Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS countries.

BUSINESS BOOM The opening of an overland pipeline from Abu Dhabi, allowing crude oil to bypass the Strait of Hormuz by exiting through Fujairah – making the city’s port the largest bunker port in the world – has led to a significant increase in business opportunities in the emirate. The Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline, also known as the Habshan-Fujairah Pipeline, was initiated by the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), which is owned by the Abu Dhabi Government. More than 500 oil and gas companies have now registered in Fujairah and many more are expected to imminently. The airport is also benefitting from military logistics taking place in the region due to its close proximity to the Port of Fujairah. Humanitarian flights have also increased due to the airport’s flexibility to handle operations at short notice. FIA

FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OFFERS THE FOLLOWING CARGO FACILITIES • • •

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WORKS CLOSELY WITH OTHER GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS TO ENSURE THE EMIRATE PROGRESSES ON ALL FRONTS

T

he emirate of Fujairah is witnessing a remarkable economic boom. Fujairah International Airport works closely with the Port of Fujairah, Fujairah Free Zone and Fujairah Customs to create the ideal business environment, making a significant contribution to the Government’s vision of creating opportunities and bringing investments into the Emirate.

PORT OF FUJAIRAH The Port of Fujairah is the only multi-purpose port on the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates. Acclaimed as one the best ports in the Middle East and fourth largest in the Gulf in container handling, it has helped attract many international shipping firms to the emirate of Fujairah. The proximity of the seaport to the Fujairah International Airport has been a positive factor for the rise in transship ment operations.

FUJAIRAH FREEZONE The strategic position of Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, as an Eastern Gateway for UAE provides many numerous economic and commercial advantages to investors, the most impor tant being the efficient and fast shipping, air and land routes. The Fujairah Free Zone’s proximity to Fujairah International Airport and Port of Fujairah have been instrumental in attracting a large number of businesses to the emirate.

FUJAIRAH CUSTOMS The aim of the department is to offer simple and efficient Customs facilities to users of the Fujairah International Airport, Port of Fujairah and Dibba Sea Por t. With over a decade of experience, Fujairah Customs has moulded its procedures to customers’ needs, and continuously improved them to provide effective services. FIA 30

DOING BUSINESS AT FIA FUJAIRAH IS EMERGING AS THE UAE’S NEW CENTRE FOR BUSINESS WITH FIA PLAYING A LEADING ROLE

F

ujairah is a thriving investment area and boasts different avenues waiting to be explored. The Government of Fujairah is adopting more investor friendly policies and regulations such as the easing of sponsorships and business laws. Other substantial investments being made by the government are intended to increase the GDP of Fujairah, diversify the economy and project Fujairah at the global stage in terms of logistics, tourism, financial market and trading infrastructure. The development of the transport infrastructure is among the emirate’s top priorities and a vital component of this is Fujairah International Airport (FIA). FIA will contribute directly to the emirates’ regional and international competitiveness and flow of foreign investment. It is destined to be a multimodal/functional business generating co n si d e r a b l e co mm e rcia l d e v e l o p m e n t both inside and outside its boundaries. An organisation comprising some 4 0 0 - plus employees, FIA works in par tnership with airlines, passengers and employees to drive the growth of Fujairah as an emerging centre for leisure and business. The organisation is FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT YEARBOOK

managed in three key business streams – Administration, Commercial and Operations. Instilled with dynamism, foresightedness and keen business acumen, these three departments help FIA to adopt business practices that adapt and keep pace with the ever-changing needs of the market and economy.

FIA is also ac tively seeking to generate revenues through non-aeronautical resources. Its focus has broadened to include commercial revenues from retailing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), FBO and advertisements to generate profits. A step in this direction has been the establishment of the Sky One Maintenance Ser vice s MRO Hangar and setting up of a professional and ISO accredited re c y clin g o rg a nis a t io n, Fa l co n A ircr a f t Recycling, at FIA. Fujairah provides the perfect location with space, skilled staff and facilities such as workshops and storage facilities within the airport as well as smelters, a sea por t and good road access to the rest of the UAE. Commercially FIA hopes to gain revenues by offering long term aircraft parking facilities, concessions and franchises, office rentals, land leases and company sponsorships. By 2015, FIA seeks to generate around 70% of their total revenues from non-aeronautical sources of the airport. With multiple commercial opportunities being exploited, Fujairah airport is increasingly being viewed as a ‘business oriented’ airport, much more than a mere service provider. FIA 31

The towering hajar Mountains form a majestic backdrop to the emirate while the crystal waters of the arabian Sea gently caress its pristine sands. These natural bounties complemented with luxurious hospitality offerings, a burgeoning economy and rich historical background, make Fujairah an ideal destination for holiday or business.

Fujairah is steadily rising from a sleepy backwater to a burgeoning maritime and petrochemical hub on the uaE’s eastern coastline. Led by the visionary leadership of his highness Sheikh hamad Bin Mohammed al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Fujairah, the emirate of Fujairah has succeeded in establishing itself as a flourishing commercial and tourism hub. Due to its strategic position with the uaE’s only access to the indian Ocean, Fujairah has a bustling, important multipurpose port. in fact,

Fujairah ranks as one of the top three bunkering locations in the world. Fujairah is a popular tourism destination in uaE with its natural beauty, powder white sand beaches, historical attractions, mountains and oases. Today the emirate offers a standard of living comparable to that of the most developed nations of the world. More than a quarter of a million people of various nationalities, inhabit this Emirate of 1450 sq kms. Linked to the rest of the uaE via modern highways, Fujairah is a mere 90 minutedrive from Sharjah, just over one hour from Dubai, and just three hours from abu Dhabi.

LESSONS IN HISTORY records of ancient times refer to Fujairah as the ‘land of sea giants’. While the origin of the term remains unclear, Fujairah has carefully preserved its historical sites such as the 500-year-old Fujairah Fort, Fujairah heritage Village, Fujairah Museum, awhala and Bithna Forts, al hayl Castle and Bidiya Mosque. all these sites are a must-see for tourists and yield extremely valuable insight into the emirate’s historical significance. Each year in 34

april, the Emirate organises the “international heritage Day” event to bring to the fore its history and traditions.

CHOICE LEISURE OFFERINGS a unique blend of east and west, Fujairah offers a highly diverse shopping experience. Friday Market is perfect for visitors looking for carpets, pottery and other souvenirs while the perfect high-street shopping experience can be had at the glittering Century Mall, Fujairah City Centre or Lulu hypermarket. The emirate’s malls also host exciting entertainment areas and lavish food courts to provide a complete lifestyle experience. Fujairah has some of the most unique nature spots in the country. The Madhab Sulpheric Spring park is renowned for its mineral hot water springs while Wadi Wurrayah is the uaE’s first protected mountain area and a ramsar wetland. This 129sq km of protected land in Fujairah provides shelter to over 500 indigenous species including 20 species of mammals, 17 species of reptiles and amphibians (five of which are endemic to the area), and 19 species of insect never before discovered by

entomologists. The endangered arabian Leopard and Tahr (mountain goat) have also been sighted here. Wadi Wurayyah also has fresh water pools and the uaE’s only year-round waterfalls. The area is culturally significant, too. remnants of 16 separate Bedouin settlements have been found here. Bedouins lived in Wadi Wurayah for 2,000 years, with the last communities vacating around the early ’80s. a popular SCuBa diving spot, the marine reserves at Faqeet, Dhadna and aqa enable visitors to glimpse into the stunning variety of fish and colorful coral reefs of the emirate. apart from these, Fujairah’s sun kissed beaches and calm waters are ideal for a host of water sports such as jet skiing, sailing, snorkeling and many more. One of Fujairah’s most renowned attractions is the sport of bull butting. held in the emirate for hundreds of years, each Friday evening during the winter months, throngs of people from across the uaE gather at the al Ghurfa suburb to watch the sturdy Brahman bulls in battle. The emirate’s hospitality offerings are some of the most luxurious in the uaE. Guests can choose Fujairah InternatIonal aIrport Yearbook

IDEAL BUSINESS HUB Fujairah’s strategic location has helped it evolve from a regional hub into a global logistics hub. Being the only emirate on the open ocean side of the Strait of Hormuz gives it access to both the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. Its location is transforming this emirate into a bulwark of Gulf security and a global energy hub. The Dolphin Energy pipeline, completed in 2007, is the first multinational gas grid in the Gulf, and links Fujairah to the biggest gas field in the world, Qatar’s North Field. The government of Abu Dhabi, which possesses 9 per cent of global oil reserves, has completed a $3.3 billion crude pipeline to the port in Fujairah. With a capacity of 1.5 million barrels a day, and with an adjacent refinery also planned, it will allow , half of Abu Dhabi’s crude oil to be exported from Fujairah. In 2014, Abu Dhabi will build a liquid natural gas (LNG) pipeline, terminating at a new gasification facility at the Fujairah port. In all, these networks will allow ships to load and offload in Fujairah, avoiding a additional distance through the Strait of Hormuz. Other Gulf countries are also negotiating for access to these networks. Fujairah is often called the ‘bread basket’ for construction projects across the UAE as its quarries provide the much needed stone. Fujairah’s limestone is pulverised into aggregate and supplied to building projects around the region, such as Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. The Port of Fujairah with its strategic location on the UAE East coast, at the crossroads of shipping lines between East and West is one of the Emirate’s vital facilities. It offers an important access to the markets of the Indian sub-continent and East of Africa. Fujairah is amongst the world’s top three suppliers of bunkering services, fueling ships at sea on a scale second only to Singapore. Since the establishment of the Fujairah Free Zone more than a decade ago, commercial activity in the emirate has flourished. The Free Zone is in close proximity with the airport and sea port making it doubly lucrative for investors. Offering 100% ownership, low tariffs and within a minimum start up time, Fujairah Free Zone is becoming the preferential venue for businesses in the UAE. FIA Fujairah InternatIonal aIrport Yearbook
