Scottie v Nelly who is better?

The dominating duo are running the show in global golf

HOW AMAZING have Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda been this year? The pair have both, hands down, ruled world golf in eyewatering fashion so far in 2024.

Let’s start with Scottie. Not only has he won his second major title at the Masters, but this year alone, he’s won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship and the RBC Heritage while also packing in five further top 10s to cement himself firmly as World Number One.

In addition, he just seems so blasé about it all. He doesn’t seem to stress about it, doesn’t get nervous, and seems to just treat golf like a job.

“Coming off the high last week,” after winning the following week at the Masters, “to going into here, not really with a ton of energy, not really with a ton of prep work,” Scheffler said. “I think it’s underrated how difficult it is to do the stuff that Tiger was doing, and win like every single week. It takes a lot out of you emotionally and physically, especially major championships.”

it up on a Thursday morning and then four days later will have a trophy in her hands. It started back at the LPGA Drive on Championship with trophy number one. FIR HILLS Seri Pak Championship was trophy number two (plus a climb to World Number One). The following week was win number three at the Ford Championship and she then won again the following week at the T-Mobile Match Play for number four. The run was topped off spectacularly with trophy number five coming in the first major of the year at The Chevron Championship.

“It’s just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf. I can finally breathe,” said Korda.

“I’m going to enjoy this right. It’s been an amazing time. Hopefully, I’ll keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row.”

I don’t think anyone has any idea when he will be de-throned. Maybe with the imminent birth of his child and the sleepless nights as a new dad might stop the Scottie show.

Then in the women’s game we’ve got Nelly Korda. The 25-year-old is in unstoppable form with a winning strike of five out of five.

Only Annika Sörenstam (2004–2005) and Nancy Lopez (1978) have won five consecutive starts before Korda became the third LPGA player to achieve the feat.

The current World Number One started off the year with a casual tie for 16th in her first event, but since then, she literally pegs

Safe to say she deserves a week off, a well-earned rest counting her trophy’s and dollar bills she has made.

In the professional golf scene closer to home, we have had two successful weeks in the UAE for the Challenge tour as they came to town for the Abu Dhabi Challenge in Al Ain followed by the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, where World Number 11 Tommy Fleetwood actually made an appearance as he caddied for his stepson Oscar Craig who qualified for the event via the Emirates Golf Federation. Across the border in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, John Catlin continued his fine form by going back-to-back and wireto-wire by capturing the Saudi Open presented by Public Investment Fund by seven shots – if he finishes the Asian Tour’s International Series as number one he gets a ticket onto LIV Golf for next season…

‘Winning in Al Ain gives reassurance that you’re doing the right things’

Moving to Dubai in August refocused me and got me more in love with the game.

Iwas actually born in Colchester, but my Dad is from Newcastle and my Mum is from Wales. I picked up golf when I was about three and I got my first handicap when I was ten which I believe was 32. I was using a half set of ladies’ clubs, and I got down to a handicap of 12 using them. I think that’s pretty impressive!

I made it into the England squad and grew up playing with Tommy Fleetwood, Andrew “Beef” Johnston, Eddie Pepperell and all those boys. Then when I was 18 I went to university in America at Tennessee to study graphic design and studio art.

● ● ●

Had a great time there, the people were great fun, great bars, live music. I think that’s where my love of going to gigs came from.

● ● ●

then I’ve floated between there and the DP World Tour. You do start to question yourself. Is this right for me? Do I do something else? But somehow golf always seems to just drag you back.

● ● ●

GARRICK PORTEOUS

AGE 34

I finished there in Christmas 2012, and then I won the 2013 Amateur Championship the following summer which then got me into the 2013 Open and the 2014 Masters. It was then that I turned professional.

PRO WINS 3 LIVES DUBAI, UAE

Thankfully I managed to get a Challenge Tour card by making the cut at final stage Q-School in 2015 which was a relief because you see a lot of youngsters struggling and finding it hard to get somewhere to play for the whole year. So for me to get out straight away back then was a massive relief.

● ●

My maiden Challenge Tour win came in the Czech Republic in 2017 and since

My wife Maisie and I moved to Dubai in August last year. That sort of refocused me and I feel like I’m more in love with the game now and I enjoy it more. We love it here. I feel like I’ve met a lot of good people especially within the golfing community and since joining Trump International Dubai, everyone seems to drive you along and wants you to do well. We’ve got some great friends at Trump International and the practice facilities are second to none, the condition of the course is unreal. Simon and his team, they do a fantastic job. It feel’s like I’m at home.

● ● ●

That all led to me winning in Al Ain on the Challenge Tour. With it being only my third professional victory in 10 years means a lot. I think it just gives you reassurance that you’re doing the right things and you’re in a good spot. So I think you’ve just got to capitalise on it and try to push forward.

● ● ●

But I’ve come a long way in the last 10 years. You grow with experience and it’s just kind of ironic that a win ten years after turning pro helps you feel like you’ve done a lot of good work. Especially after 2019 when I felt like I’ve got a bit lost, I got my DP World Tour card via Q-School and then Covid hit. But ever since then, it’s kind of been like some good, some bad, and never really performing to where I felt like I could win and feel comfortable to win.

● ● ●

Now having a DP World Tour card and a Challenge Tour card is a nice option to have. If I continue to play well out on the Challenge Tour, then hopefully I can get my full card back that way. The jump up these days, it’s not that big. You see a lot of lads from previous years winning on the DP World Tour and staying there, there are some great players coming up from the Challenge Tour these days.

SET FOR SEOUL

Round two of the 2024 Aramco Team Series has South Korea in it’s sights

he Aramco Team Series presented by PIF, is poised to make a ground breaking entrance into South Korea, as it marks its debut at the prestigious New Korea Country Club.

This event is notable as the first major tournament hosted at this exclusive venue in nearly four decades, stirring considerable anticipation in Seoul.

Set for May 10-12, the second round of the 2024 Aramco Team Series schedule will showcase LPGA stars like Hyo Joo Kim and Danielle Kang, alongside 2024 LET winners Bronte Law and Shannon Tan.

Representing Golf Saudi, ambassadors Chiara Noja, Marianne Skarpnord and Pauline Roussin are set to participate in the land of morning calm, underscoring Golf Saudi’s commitment to enhancing women’s golf in collaboration with Aramco and PIF.

For its debut in South Korea, Golf Saudi will also be partnering with KOLON Group, the Official Host Partner, to bring top-tier global talent to Seoul. Leveraging KOLON Group’s experience in organising premier events such as the Kolon Korea Open, this collaboration aims to deliver a world-class experience for both players and spectators.

The 2024 Aramco Team Series, kicked off its

season with Team Roussin-Bouchard and Alexandra Forsterling clinching the team and individual titles in Tampa, Florida. As usual, 36 teams of 4 will battle it out over two days at New Korea Country Club to become the first Aramco Team Series - Korea Team Champions. Meanwhile, there is a three-day individual strokeplay competition contested between the 108 player field.

Contributing to the growing success of golf in South Korea is World No. 9 and Amundi Evian Championship winner, Hyo-Joo Kim, who enters the tournament as the home crowd favourite.

For Kim, competing in Seoul as part of the LET, serves as a major source of motivation to clinch her first Aramco Team Series presented by PIF title, on her series debut.

Hyo-Joo Kim said: “I’ve heard from those on Tour how special Aramco Team Series events are and how they are set up like a Major. As soon as I heard the series was heading to Korea for the first time there was no doubt that I would be competing.

“The unique format of the event excites me; I’ve never played in a tournament quite like it. I’m looking forward to competing with some of my fellow LPGA players here on Korean soil, and exciting the passionate crowds.”

Kim will be joined by LPGA star Danielle Kang, who is on the hunt for her first win since 2022.

The Major winner is no stranger to the city, sharing a deep connection with South Korea thanks to her own Korean heritage.

Danielle Kang said: “I’m thrilled to be participating in the Aramco Team Series in Korea. I absolutely love the team aspect of this series and can’t wait to play alongside a great field of golfers from both the LPGA and LET. I am very thankful for this opportunity and excited to compete in Korea. See you all there.”

With the backdrop of the Bukhansan Mountain, the New Korea Country Club will be opening its doors to the public for the first time in 38 years – having been an exclusive and highly sought after members’ club, just thirty minutes from the capital city.

The immaculate course, which is richly lined with cherry blossom trees, is equipped with undulating fairways and offering breath taking views, set to host the USD 1 million prize funded event.

Following the Korean tournament, the 2024 series will continue with events in London, another Asian city, and conclude with the grand finale in Saudi Arabia at Riyadh Golf Club.

Graeme McDowell has got himself sitting pretty into the pack thanks to a revived career at LIV Golf

It’s coming up to two years since Graeme McDowell relived himself of his PGA Tour and DP World Tour membership, to join the Saudi backed LIV Golf League.

The 44-year-old from Portrush, Northern Ireland had decided to wash his hands of golf’s two strongest and most powerful tours, where he claimed a total of 13 victories, with the last ironically being the Saudi International at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in 2020.

McDowell even has a major title to his name at the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach where he overcame a chasing pack including Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson and he also has the bragging rights of clinching the winning moment in the 2010 Ryder Cup for Team Europe by defeating Hunter Mahan. All being a catalyst that sent him on his way to a career high of number four in the world in 2011. But it seemed he didn’t want any of those privileges anymore.

For what it is, and like many others, McDowell alongside with close friends Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood all moved across to LIV Golf in 2022, spearheaded by CEO Greg Norman.

But it wasn’t plane sailing for McDowell. He played poorly during his first two years in LIV and after ending up outside the top 24 and within the free trade category to then be in danger of being ejected from the league. Not before Brooks Koepka threw him a lifeline and invited him to play for team Smash GC.

If we just rewind a bit first though. Why did Koepka sign the out-of-form McDowell?

The pair have history. They formed a friendship when both were competing back on the then European Tour (DP World Tour) where Koepka’s caddie and McDowell’s close friend, Rickie Elliott, who is also from Northern Ireland became the bond for the pair.

Another seed growing this friendship was horse racing, as McDowell explained to Golf Digest.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said McDowell. “I’m not a horse racing expert, but I feel like ‘ve grown up around horse racing. In the UK and Ireland it’s something that people are really into.”

JOCKEYING INTO POSITION

“I love being around people like JP McManus and meeting people like AP McCoy. That’s how we met Harry Derham.”

“In the beginning Harry obviously trained horses under Paul Nicholls, a 14-time champion jumps trainer, plus JP’s got a lot of horses with him. So Harry always had dream of having his own yard and we said, hey when that day comes let’s, let’s get a couple of horses with you.

“We initially bought Fourofakind at the start of 2023, which we own with a few of the guys out here on LIV. Then last summer, Brooks had just won his fifth major, so I said to him this is it, it’s meant to be my friend, and we called it Givemefive.

“All Brooks said was how much is it and where do I send the cash? That’s pretty much how Brooks operates!

“We’re on a cool WhatsApp group with Harry and the team at the yard, and Brooks enjoys staying in touch with what’s going on. I think he wants a few more horses. Maybe to get something in the U.S. like a horse that can run on the flat, maybe get him to the Kentucky Derby one year!

“But Givemefive is certainly paying it’s way right now, and we’re having a good time which is a good thing to have as a team. It’s something else to bond over and get excited about.

“We have a great group of guys that are very competitive and obviously having a horse, which is competitive as well as is definitely something fun for us to be focusing on.

Maybe the form of Givemefive has rubbed off from the racing track to the course. Not only is Givemefive a part of Smash Racing, but it carries the colours of Smash GC. Since McDowell made

12 GOLFDIGESTME.COM MAY 2024
courtney thompson/liv golf

the trade across to the new look Smash GC team, it has been close to a dream start for not just himself, but the whole crew.

A dominating performance in Smash’s performance in Saturday’s final round of LIV Golf Las Vegas allowed skipper Brooks Koepka to celebrate his fifth trophy of any kind since joining LIV Golf, while teammate Talor Gooch became the first player to win trophies with three different teams.

But perhaps the most meaningful celebration came from McDowell, for the first time in his 24 starts in LIV Golf, he had his hands on a trophy once again.

His five under par 65 was two strokes better than any other player, as he fuelled Smash’s late surge on the final holes to break open a tight leaderboard.

These guys are motivated and they’ve got a great work ethic. I still want to sin every week and you know these guys are going to compete at every event.

“It’s been it’s been fun,” he said. “You know, being surrounded by players like Brooks, Jason (Kokrak) and Talor, who was the individual champion last year which is no small feat against the field that we have out here. It brings it’s own level of competition.

“These guys are motivated and they’ve got a great work ethic. I still want to win every week and you know these guys are going to compete at every event. So you better get going or else you’re going to get left behind,” McDowell said.

“I feel like for me, at this point in my career, I feel like I’m still good enough. I just need that motivation and that momentum.

“We’ve got a team now which believes that it can compete every week.”

WIRE-TO-WIRE (AND BACK-TO-BACK!) FOR THE AMERICAN AS HE BEATS STAR-STUDDED FIELD IN RIYADH

CATLIN CRUISES

TO SAUDI OPEN

As weeks go, John Catlin had the perfect one in Saudi Arabia as the Asian Tour visited the Kingdom for the USD 1 million Saudi Open presented by PIF.

In a field that was headlined by the likes of LIV Golfers Henrik Stenson, Peter Uihlien and three-time DP World Tour winner Haotong Li from China, 144 players from 33 different countries set foot on Riyadh Golf Club.

In a momentous moment for the tournament, there were 20 Arab golfers from eight nations taking part, including seven from the host country, all who had been handed the opportunity to compete alongside some of the world’s best players as golf continues to develop in the region.

Golf Saudi CEO Noah Alireza spoke to gathered media ahead of the tournament as he stressed the importance of the 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF’s commitment to handing opportunities to national and regional players.

“We are delighted to welcome a strong field to the 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF following its first holding on

the Asian Tour last year and I am certain that this week will prove a success with exciting golf on show at Riyadh Golf Club” said Alireza.

“The opportunity that the Saudi Open presents to all of the competitors, but particularly to the seven Saudi nationals and the 13 other Arab golfers in the field, is one of the main driving forces behind our desire to host this tournament in Riyadh.

“Playing alongside the best Asian Tour players, plus a number of LIV Golf and DP World Tour members, helps them understand what it takes to reach this level and is a vital part of their golf education. It is a key part of Golf Saudi’s commitment to golf in our country.”

When it came to the action, Catlin led from the word go in Riyadh. An opening round of 66 saw him carry on the fine form he showed when capturing the Asian Tour’s International Series Macau in March, alongside his 59 if you hadn’t heard!

The five-time Asian Tour winner sat at six-under par with Australian Wade Ormsby and Scott Hend, Philippine’s Justin Quiban and Japan’s Tatsunori Shogenji all just one shot back after the first day of action on Wednesday. Leading the Asian Tour Order of Merit was LIV Golf’s David Puig who was wellplaced on Catlin’s heels not before a double bogey on his 16th hole dropped him back to the group of four players at four-under par.

The Asian Tour’s newly crowned ‘Mr 59’, kept his lead going on Thursday, as he added a four-under-par 67 to his opening 65. Extending his bogey-free golf to 36 holes.

“I didn’t have my best stuff,” said Catlin. “My short game was saving me, especially on the back nine there. I’m looking forward to getting some rest tonight and battling it out over the next couple of days and will see what happens.

“I think I got a very good chance over the next two days. I mean, there’s obviously a lot of good players up there, but I think I’m one of them, so I think I have a good shot.”

If things couldn’t go any better for Catlin, unsurprisingly they did. Round three on Friday was a thing of more amazement.

“EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS EVENT IS TOP CLASS AND I LOOK FORWARD TO COMING BACK IN THE FUTURE”

Trying not to sound like there’s an echo, Catlin again went bogey-free, but this time he set a new course record at Riyadh Golf Club of nine-underpar 62 to lead the event on 19-under par and extend his lead to eight shots. Everything the American did was just flawless.

Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat sat in a distant second place following a 67, while a shot further back were Ormsby, Hend, Puig and Haotong. All they could do is just look on in amazement.

“My game has felt in good shape,” said the American. “Yesterday I hung in there when I didn’t have my best and was able to shoot a decent round.

“Today it was just one of those days where the putter just gets hot and it’s almost like you can’t miss, so I just kept going and kept trying to make as many as I could.”

Catlin started the final day with an eight-shot lead and not surprisingly was never challenged as he aimed to go both wire-to-wire and aim to become the first back-to-back winner on the Asian Tour in five years.

But he was never really challenged.

A final-round five-under-par 66 to finish on 24-under was enough to win by seven shots from Australian Wade Ormsby. He did come agonisingly close to becoming the first player to complete 72 holes bogey-free, but he actually missed a seven-foot par putt on the 14th. Ouch! Two records it is then!

Victory in Riyadh, earned Catlin a winners cheque for USD 180,000, and saw him overtake Puig at the top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit. The Fireballs member entered the event with a victory and a second place already this season on the Asian Tour, as he closed with a 67 to finish in solo fifth… just the 10 shots back from Catlin!

Topping off the week, Catlin was full of praise for the organisation of the 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF and is already looking forward to defending his title in 2025.

“The tournament was awesome. From start to finish we were looked after amazingly and the people were friendly. The hospitality has been great, the food has been awesome - everything about this event is top class and I look forward to coming back in the future.”

WHAT TO WISH FOR WHEN YOUR ONLY DREAM COMES TRUE

PHOTOGRAPHS BY JUSTIN

A thousand years ago, in 2022, Tom Kim sat in the audience while Rory McIlroy held court with reporters before the CJ Cup in South Carolina. Kim raised his hand for the microphone and joined the ranks of the inquisitors. “What’s it like,” he said, “having so much success as a young player? How do you manage all that?” Kim was 20 years old at the time, and he had won his second PGA Tour event, the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, only two weeks before. He had started to feel the dizziness that comes with heights and needed someone to steady him.

McIlroy smiled from the front of the room. “I didn’t have as much success as you’re having from such a young age,” he said. Kim laughed. Then McIlroy turned serious. “The biggest thing I realised is managing your time,” he said. “You’re going to be pulled in so many different directions.” McIlroy looked down at Kim and started counting out loud. “One, two, three, four . . . I can see five sponsors on you,” he said. McIlroy warned Kim not to lose sight of what really mattered. What had made him a two-time winner at such a precocious age? “It’s the time that you put into it,” McIlroy said.

As of this writing in 2024, Kim is a three-time PGA Tour winner, having claimed the Shriners again last October. He was 21 years, three months, and 24 days old when he lifted the trophy, making him the youngest to raise three since Tiger Woods.

Seeing Kim slumped on a couch at his home in Dallas, that’s where the similarities seem to end. He has been left a little flat by a cold. His parents

sit nearby, discreet in their perpetual availability. He hit the gym with Scottie Scheffler this morning, but he hasn’t swung a club today, a rarity. He probably won’t. “It’s ballsy cold,” he says. “It’s so cold.” Instead, he’ll work on his mental game. For the next hour at least, that means thinking about what McIlroy told him. It means thinking about time.

He bristles at the idea that his rise has been meteoric. “People think I came out of nowhere,” he says. “That’s not true.” He turned professional when he was 15 years old. He was born in South Korea—his father, Changik, was a former professional and coach—but Kim’s first tour was in the Philippines. He moved on to the Asian Development Tour, the Korean Tour, the Asian Tour. Because of his age, his parents travelled with him, watching from behind the ropes while he won tournaments in Malaysia, India and Singapore. His family’s fortunes rose and fell with him.

“Tom has battled for his livelihood since he was 15,” his older brother Sam says. “Golf was the only opportunity that he had. For him, growing up, every tournament counted. Every shot mattered.”

He yearned to come to America all the while. (Even his accent is a testament to his singlemindedness. The Kim brothers perfected their English during an extended family sojourn to Australia. Sam, a business major at Georgetown, has an Aussie accent. Tom sounds Californian.) It took Kim five years to make his dream come true. That might not seem like a long time, but numbers are never as absolute as they seem. They are framed by perspective, given meaning by context. For Kim, five years is a quarter of his lifetime. Five years felt like forever.

“You’re at this age when there are so many things you want to experience, but you’re not experiencing them because you have a job to do,” he says. “You realise that this is the most important thing, and that’s all you see—you’re just running toward that one dream—and when it happened it was like, I’ve been working my whole life for this.”

Which means that now that he has arrived, Tom Kim isn’t in a hurry anymore. It’s one of the reasons he chose Dallas as his stateside home. Life in Seoul can be frenetic. A short commute can be harrowing. The pace is different in Texas. There seems to be more of everything, including hours in a day and days in a week. “I just try to live a very quiet life,” Kim says. “I’m enjoying just trying to live easy.”

He is an unusual 21-year-old in many ways. Maybe what makes him most special is his desire to slow down.

A YOUNGER KIM THOUGHT

ONLY OF

THE FUTURE

. He made plans. It proved instructive when his plans didn’t come to fruition, and his life worked out better than he had imagined.

He thought his path to the United States was the Korn Ferry Tour; he saw a logic in climbing golf’s

MAY 2024 GOLFDIGESTME.COM 19

built-in ladder. In 2021, he reached the second stage of the Korn Ferry Q school at Bear Creek in California. He needed to make an eight-foot putt on the last hole to advance to the final stage, guaranteeing him conditional status. He would become a grinder at least, lifting his game to domestic demands and perhaps finding his way to the PGA Tour. No matter what, he would finally call America home.

He missed the putt.

“It felt like my life was over,” he says. “It was that kind of feel.”

He returned to Asia and did his best with what was in front of him, winning the Korean Tour Order of Merit. He won the Asian Tour Order of Merit, too. That got him into some serious tournaments for 2022: the U.S. Open and the Open Championship, the Byron Nelson and the Genesis Scottish Open, where he finished solo third in July. He also made the cut at both Opens and joined the PGA Tour as a special temporary member after finishing seventh at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

That August, he won the Wyndham Championship. He was the first tour winner born after 2000, and then he won again, and again. He traded his birth name, Joohyung, for his childhood nickname—born of his love of Thomas the Tank Engine—made Dallas his American home, and enjoyed a star-making turn at the 2022 Presidents Cup. “He’s been such a tremendous gift for our sport,” International captain Trevor Immelman said of him at the time. “Man, I am a huge fan.”

Immelman was not alone. Kim’s buoyant presence gained him as much notice as his game. “He’s been awesome,” teammate Cameron Davis said. “Really positive—really high energy, which I think is great.” His roars, fist pumps and heart thumps became a personal signature. He had been working on those since childhood, too. Sam Kim remembers his little brother mimicking the fist pump Woods unleashed after the putt that earned him a playoff against Rocco Mediate at the 2008 U.S. Open. Tom was 5 years old.

After, Kim admitted that his putting routine included deciding how he would celebrate the putt he was about to make. Not many golfers would confess that, but his compelling mix of drive and innocence, of savvy and guilelessness, somehow works for him. He is a home-schooled golf obsessive, but he’s funny and unabashed, regularly straying delightfully off-script. Chad Mumm, executive producer of “Full Swing,” Netflix’s insidethe-ropes golf series, watched Kim’s Presidents Cup display and gave him an episode this season because of his rare heart: It’s so big; he can’t help but wear it on his sleeve.

“Everybody fell in love with Tom,” Mumm says. “A lot of these guys are very protected and cloistered by virtue of their talent. He’s living his dream in the biggest way possible.”

There are moments when Kim can seem like an id-driven maniac. He split his pants twice at the Presidents Cup. (“The pants were just awful,” he

KIM HAS NEVER BEEN ONE TO HIDE HIS FEELINGS OR HIS AMBITIONS.

says. “They were terrible pants.”) Trying to track down a wayward shot at the PGA Championship, he wound up hip-deep in mud. (“Like, I would do that all over again just to find that ball.”) Next, he raised eyebrows along with his cuff line when he played at the St. Jude Championship with his pants rolled up, stretched over the pot roasts he calls calves. (“I didn’t want to get my pants dirty. Might as well roll them up.”)

Then he’ll make a turn, and he’ll do or say something that will remind you that he’s younger than most top amateurs. “He’s sacrificed a lot to be where he is,” Sam Kim says. “He’s still learning how to be an adult.” It was widely reported that Kim’s 21st birthday party was his first party—the first time he had been in the company of people other than his family to celebrate something.

“No, that’s not true at all,” he says.

Oh, when was his first party?

“It was at the Presidents Cup. That was my first official party.”

So now Tom Kim has been to two parties, one for each pair of pants he has destroyed. He has also climbed as high as 11th in the world golf rankings, a multicultural force of nature, poised to become the game’s next global superstar.

“It all started with that missed putt at Bear Creek,” he says.

The lesson? Sometimes it’s not up to you how things happen. Only so much of your fate is within your control. Take what life and the game gives you and make the most of it.

Kim nods. “Exactly,” he says.

SINKING A LITTLE MORE DEEPLY INTO HIS couch, Kim seems happy for the reinforcement. It might sound strange given his success, but 2023 was something of an off year for him. “It was humbling,” he says. “I left so much out there.” In retrospect, when he had asked McIlroy about how he had dealt with his own early triumphs, Kim was exposing a looming fragility. He had never been one to hide his feelings or his ambitions. Now he was confessing a new uncertainty about both: What do you wish for when your only wish comes true?

KIM IS GOLF’S

VERSION OF AN EXTREME GRADUALIST.

“You’re never going to be able to train for when your success comes,” Kim says. He revels in the company of more experienced golfers, partly for the camaraderie but also for the wisdom. He spent last Christmas with Jordan Spieth and his young family—“I think they’re so close in age, it actually makes it nice,” Spieth said after, comparing Kim with his toddler son Sammy—and Scheffler is another close friend. (Full Swing’s cameras caught a beautifully typical Tom Kim moment in Augusta when, after he had missed the turn for Magnolia Lane, he parked in a spot reserved for former Masters champions, and Scheffler, among their number, delighted in pointing it out. “Oh, no!” Kim said before recovering his pride. “All right, winner. I’m gonna get out of your parking spot.”)

He has asked his indulgent colleagues for advice on everything from how to play certain lies to how to sleep on an overnight lead in a major. “Those guys have been a huge help,” Kim says. He thought he had followed enough of their lead. He signed with Nike, and now his sweaters have one logo instead of five. But preparation will carry you only so far. There’s a difference between expectation and reality, and Kim started to lose himself when he began to win. “Instead of going into 2023 just trying to get better, I was thinking, I want to win this, and I want to win that,” he says, “which is not the way I normally do it. My mind-set shifted a little, and it’s been really eye-opening about who I really am and what works for me. I learned a lot about myself.”

Kim’s soul doesn’t match his vessel, and neither does his game. With his robust build and self-confessed appetites—“I’m a big meat guy,” he says—he looks like he should be a huge swinger, a bomber. He’s almost shockingly average off the tee, but he’s straight. “I’m just a 172-ball-speed guy who tries to hit a lot of fairways,” he says. His long irons are his standout clubs, which he uses to catch up to the longer drivers. (His signature shot at the Presidents Cup was a 2-iron he laced from 239 yards to eight feet.) He competes whenever his putter gets hot.

“I feel like once you get to the PGA Tour, everyone knows how to make birdies,” he says. “It comes down to who can make the fewest mistakes. Just how can you be in there?”

His early finishes this year have been underwhelming because his putting has been below his standards, particularly in the should-makebut-can-miss range. It’s a surprising development given his allegiance to precision. It’s also no reason to panic. Chris Como, his swing coach, has reminded him to think more about his process than his results—the key to Woods’ success, according to Como—and Kim is heading into summer in a measured frame of mind. It isn’t time alone he’s trying to stop; he’s trying to hold himself back.

There isn’t anything Earth-shattering about that approach. A lot of golfers talk about playing within themselves, especially when they’re trying to recapture past success. There is still something inspiring about Kim’s zeal for restraint. Buzz Aldrin talked about courage being an accumulation of discipline: You make small, steady steps toward weightlessness until one day you’re strapped on top of a rocket. Tom Kim is golf’s version of an extreme gradualist, a testament to the efficacy of micro-gains.

“He’s always thinking about golf,” Sam Kim says.

Kim’s roars, fist pumps and heart thumps won over fans during the 2022 Presidents Cup.

“He’s always thinking about how to get a little better compared to yesterday. He’s always thinking about how he can improve the system that he has.” Golf Digest asked Tom Kim to share more about that system. Politely, if unusually, he declined, citing fear of losing his competitive advantage, as though he had been asked to give away his rights to a patent. Kim’s system isn’t trademarked, but he believes it, like his approach to the game, is his and his alone. Take his length off the tee. When he hit that famous 2-iron, he was 60 yards short of his American foes. Does he feel pressure to drive farther?

“No, not at all,” he says. Last year, he gained seven miles per hour in his ball speed, mostly by getting stronger physically. Sometimes he felt like he was overswinging—with distance came wildness, or what passed as wildness for him—and he has toggled things back to 172. Now the goal is to add a mile per hour per year.

“Then I’ll be 180 by the time I’m 28, 29,” he says. “That’s probably when my prime is going to come. I’m very old school. I know what’s good for my game. If someone could give me 185 tomorrow, would I take it? Yes, of course. But it doesn’t work that way. I have to go out and earn it. If I play worse with 185, there’s no point. That’s the beauty of this game. I just love how detailed you need to be.”

McIlroy told him something else at the CJ Cup that made an impression: It was easier for him to become the best golfer in the world than stay the best golfer in the world. Spieth’s own dramatic arrival at 20 and his volatile career since is proof of the fickle nature of greatness. There’s nothing wrong with thinking big. Every miracle begins

RISING STAR

An episode of “Full Swing Season 2” chronicles Kim’s life on the

with the vision of it. “Of course, you want to win,” Kim says. “It would be great to win one or five or 10 majors.” But he knows that monuments have foundations in bedrock. The best-built parts of them are the parts that no one can see.

KIM MIGHT RESIST WINS AS A MEASURE. IT’S still hard not to wonder what might be in store for him. Maybe, just this once, we should fight the urge to future cast. Maybe we shouldn’t saddle an emerging golfer with the weight of expectation, measuring him against the best of the best. Maybe we should remember that there are metrics other than trophies. “Not losing yourself—not forgetting what brought you here, that grit, hunger, determination—that’s the most important thing,” Kim says. His tie for second at last year’s Open Championship, after he blew up his ankle tripping over a patio stone, was reminder enough. Maybe we should be happy to watch him go about his small, almost imperceptible work, finding something to admire in a young man’s pursuit of increments rather than absolutes.

Kim thinks he’s down to the final one percent of his efforts—that’s the margin between his game, as it exists today, and the games of the elite, the golfers who compete in most majors, who routinely win multiple times each year. He isn’t starry-eyed about the company he’s suddenly keeping. Asked to describe his first practice round at Augusta last year, when he was out for three hours with Woods and McIlroy, he at least feigned nonchalance: “a nice, enjoyable round,” he called it. But he has been watching them as closely as the world has started to watch him. At golf’s most rarified levels, the margins become almost impossibly fine. Not much separates the very good from the great, and the opportunities for self-improvement are limited. Kim shot a 61 to close out his win at the Wyndham. Some rounds, it’s hard to find the strokes to shave. He has found them, though. By his lights, they are all around him. They are all around us.

“You make a nice six-footer for par, that’s one of those strokes,” he says. “You make one birdie from 80 yards, that’s another. Instead of the numbers, you need to see what you can do compared to the guys who win by a lot. The difference might come down to half a shot a day.”

Half a shot a day. A mile per hour per year. Let those tiny achievements add themselves up, and one day you’re walking on the moon. It’s a beautiful way to think. The shame is that not many young men think that way. They think in big swings. They think in right now when they have all the time in the world. When Kim thinks of his competitive career in its entirety, he thinks about how long it might be. “I’m only 21,” he says. “I still have a lot of years of golf in me. I have one more lifespan than I’ve lived.” Take everything he has ever done since the day he was born, every improvement he has ever made, every inch of progress, and double it.

Tom Kim will be 42 years old.

The five holes that will decide the PGA Championship

alhalla Golf Club outside of Louisville, host of the 2024 PGA Championship, is a course defined by rich topographical variety and pointedly modernist architecture. Designed by Jack Nicklaus in the mid-1980s, the layout covers two distinct sections of land: a flood plain in the bend of a river known as Floyd’s Fork and hilly, upland terrain that plunges through hardwoods and former pastureland. The architecture is creative and stern, with defined targets and rewards for powerful driving. Artistic flourishes come in the form of fescue-carpeted mounding throughout the first nine and naturally occurring limestone used to bulwark greens, streams and water features. Previous PGA Championships at Valhalla—1996, 2000 and 2014— finished suspensefully on 18, a reachable par 5 with a split fairway second shot. Late-game theatrics are certain to be in store again, but to get there players will have to survive these equally distinctive holes.

HOLE 2 / 500 YARDS / PAR 4

“WINNING COLORS”

Much of the first nine is constructed to look like rambling Midwestern prairie with the holes switching over former agricultural fields. The second hole occupies a separate environment, leveled into the wooded hillside on the far side of Floyd’s Fork and bending left around a sunken wetland. Members play the double dogleg as a par 5, but it’s a monstrous par 4 for the PGA Championship, one that registered as the most difficult hole in 2014 with a stroke average of 4.36. Drives must try to push as far into a narrow neck of fairway as they dare while hewing toward the hazard to shorten the approach into a green set over an embankment that falls steeply into a stream.

MAY 2024 GOLFDIGESTME.COM 27

HOLE 6 / 495 YARDS / PAR 4

“LONG SHOT”

It sometimes seems the only viable architectural defense in an age of routine 330-yard drives is to cut off the fairway. That’s what the sixth hole does. Floyd’s Fork bisects the hole, capping drives at 300 yards, and any tee shot that goes right or through the fairway tumbles into a deep ravine. Players will club down to put the ball in play, then face an approach of about 200 yards—front hole locations are accessible, but birdies will become scarce the further the flag moves back. This was the second-most-difficult hole in 2014 with a 4.35 stroke average.

28 GOLFDIGESTME.COM MAY 2024

HOLE 13 / 351 YARDS / PAR 4

“THE LIMESTONE HOLE”

The 13th is one of the most unique holes in the PGA Championship rotation. The green is structured like a silo that has been plopped in a moat and shorn a third of the way up, its base ringed in limestone rock while water trickles down a newly constructed façade of limestone to the right. The reason the green is built so high is to keep the putting surface above the flood line because the site is at the lowest point of the second nine. Missing the fairway in the bunkers or bluegrass rough makes hitting the 6,000-square-foot target more difficult, and most players will hit irons and hybrids for position, though a few will try to hit drives as close to the hazard as possible and pitch on from there.

MAY 2024 GOLFDIGESTME.COM 29

HOLE 15 / 435 YARDS / PAR 4

“JULEP”

There aren’t many level stances at Valhalla, but the 15th fairway glides like the smooth backstretch of Churchill Downs along a creek called Brush Run. The creek can catch drives flared right, but its primary role is to set up one of the course’s most exacting second shots as it bows against the front of the angled green before circling around to the right. The approach must find land between a fronting bunker and another bunker left, and a ridge running onto the putting surface creates an elevated back section. Expect to see at least three hole locations set along the right edge of the green where bogeys outnumber birdies at a two-to-one clip.

30 GOLFDIGESTME.COM MAY 2024

HOLE 18 / 570 YARDS / PAR 5

“PHOTO FINISH”

Drives off an elevated tee must find fairway between a bunker and a limestone waterfall hazard. Hole locations on the boomerang green with three exaggerated levels should impact how players approach the second and third shots, especially if they need to make birdie or eagle. In 1996, Kenny Perry’s bogey here put him in a playoff with Mark Brooks, who finished with a 4 and then birdied the hole again 20 minutes later for his first and only major. Tiger Woods and Bob May both birdied it in 2000 to cap matching 31s on the second nine, then traded pars in their three-hole playoff until May needed another birdie to stay alive. Phil Mickelson closed with a birdie and a final-round 66 in 2014, but Rory McIlroy, playing in near darkness and hitting up while Mickelson waited to play his third shot, made a par from the left greenside bunker to win by one.

8 REASONS WHY WORKING ON YOUR SWING IN A SIMULATOR BEATS GOING TO THE RANGE

THE SIM -PLE TRUTHS ABOUT PRACTICE

WITH PETER MORRICE

UNLOCK THE MYSTERIES OF THE SHOTS YOU HIT

I bet I’ve spent more time hitting in a golf simulator than any other teacher in the world. It’s not a brag; it’s just where I shoot all my content and give all my lessons. What I’ve found is, the feedback you get from the sim can help you better understand your shots and practice with more confidence than you can on a driving range, which to me is just a place to warm up before you play.

The first advantage relates to establishing baselines. What is the typical character of your shots—the shape, the trajectory, the distance? What is the data on the simulator telling you? I know you’re thinking that your

shots are all over the map, but I promise you will see some patterns here, so let’s get started.

My favorite club to use for charting data is the 6-iron because it’s relatively easy to hit, and it shows curve better than the shorter clubs. Hit some shots at a centre target (above), see the info on the data screen and develop a shot profile. For example, here are my 6-iron stats:

Clubhead speed: 82-85 mph Apex of flight: 80-90 feet

Ball speed: 115-118 mph Distance: 175-178 yards

Launch angle: 17-19 degrees Shot shape: Left to right

START TRACKING TO SEE A PATTERN

“It’s also important you exercise patience with your upper body as you swing down,” Baile says.

Practice works best when you can look for patterns in a series of shots. Good luck trying to isolate your shots on a busy range, with golf balls flying everywhere. In a simulator, the tracer arrows show you the start line, curve and finish position of every shot and for groups of shots (right).

“Amateurs tend to pull on the club from the top, which narrows the hand path and makes it very difficult to square the face. Instead, feel as if your dominant arm is pushing the club away from you as your hips shift laterally toward the target. Also, feel like your back stays facing the fairway a touch longer. The arms stay wide, and the longer the hand path means there is more time you have to build speed.”

In my case, I want all my shots to start left of my target and curve back toward it. I don’t care how much they curve because I know they’re working in the right direction, but I never want them curving left. Your pattern might be the complete opposite. The point is to get a clear picture of what your shots are doing swing after swing after swing.

USE YOUR OWN BALL FOR REAL FEEDBACK

Many ranges have golf balls with worn-down dimples, cuts, chips—not a recipe for reliable results. Plus, range balls are probably not the same model you use on the course, so you won’t see the same distance, trajectory, spin, and so on. In a simulator, you often can bring your own balls for consistency. You also can eliminate factors like temperature, wind and different lies. Also, a range might be slightly uphill or downhill, and the distance to targets changes from one end of the teeing area to the other. Yes, part of golf is handling changing conditions, but we’re trying to establish baselines.

MAY 2024 GOLFDIGESTME.COM 35

OUT HOW MUCH SPEED YOU CAN CONTROL

To play good golf, you have to control the distance and direction of your shots. Sounds obvious, but when you hit balls at a range, you’re really judging only direction: Did the ball go where you wanted it to go? The range just isn’t the place to judge distance with any accuracy, and I think most golfers instinctively understand that.

One thing golfers will do on the range is try to hit the ball as far as they can, which is fun but doesn’t accomplish much. In fact, swinging faster often produces poor contact, and there goes the distance. The stat I want you to look at on the sim is ball speed, which tells how efficiently you

transfer club speed to the shot (above). If you swing faster but your ball speed goes down, that’s poor contact. Forget about maximum distance. Your goal should be predictable distance, and that comes from the ball speed staying the same because the strike is consistent.

Try this: Hit 10 balls at 75-percent effort, noting your club speed and how many you hit flush. At least six is a good goal. Then, hit 10 more swinging a few miles an hour faster. If the number of solid strikes drops, the extra speed is hurting you. Find the tipping point between speed and contact. See how fast you can drive the car and still keep it on the road.

36 GOLFDIGESTME.COM MAY 2024
FIGURE

DON’T FORGET THE TRAJECTORY

CHECK THE LAUNCH AND THE SPIN DATA

Every club is designed to launch the ball at a certain angle and with a certain amount of backspin, and that has a huge impact on distance. If you launch the ball higher than prescribed, you’re turning your 7-iron into an 8-iron. Same with backspin: More spin makes a club play shorter. My ideal 6-iron launch is 17-19 degrees, with a backspin of 5,200 to 5,400 rpm (left). If you swing slower, your numbers should be lower. There are many factors that effect launch and spin, like the attack angle into the ball or the clubface angle at impact. You can find those on the sim, too.

H OLD OFF YOUR TORSO STARTING DOWN

Apex is another critical measurement you’ll see on any simulator. It tells you how high the ball is at its peak, and you might be surprised to know that you should hit all your full-swing shots roughly the same height, no matter the club. Your 9-iron appears to go higher than your 5-iron because it reaches its apex closer to you. Why is apex really important? First, the height of a shot affects the landing angle and rollout. With a 9-iron, you want a steep landing so that the ball stops on the green; with a driver, you want a shallower landing to get some roll. Second, it can lead to equipment tweaks. For example, if your apex is low with a particular club, like one of your fairway woods, you might need a softer shaft or more loft to bring it up.

“It’s also important you exercise patience with your upper body as you swing down,” Baile says.

“Amateurs tend to pull on the club from the top, which narrows the hand path and makes it very difficult to square the face. Instead, feel as if your dominant arm is pushing the club away from you as your hips shift laterally toward the tar get. Also, feel like your back stays facing the fairway a touch longer. The arms stay wide, and the longer the hand path means there is more time you have to build speed.”

MAY 2024 GOLFDIGESTME.COM 37

As I said, direction tends to be the focus on the range, but what causes the direction is often misunderstood—and the simulator can clear things up. When your ball goes left or right, you probably think you aimed there or swung in that direction, but the issue is usually the face being open or closed. When the ball goes right, the face was looking right at impact; when the ball goes left, the face was left.

Direction is a combination of where the ball starts and how much it curves, and the initial direction is hard to see on the range. A simulator will tell you the start line and

Experiment on the sim, first swinging left and holding the face open, then swinging straight or right, with the face open or closed. Always check the relative face and path numbers on the data screen. You’ll quickly learn why your shots—good and bad—go where they go. LEARN TO ANALYSE AND ADJUST YOUR SHOT DIRECTION

the curve, which is a blend of the swing path and the clubface angle. For example, if the path is 5 degrees to the left, and the face is 2 degrees to the left, the face is 3 degrees open to the path. That shot will start right of the path and then curve even more to the right.

Check it out at schools.golfdigest.com.

KEEP A CLOSE TAB ON THE DISRUPTORS

One data point that elite players gravitate to is something called horizontal launch. Just like the ball launches upward, it also comes off left, right or straight—that’s horizontal launch. It’s a big deal because if you’re not starting the ball on the line you want, your shots are doomed. The other factor in shot shape is curve, and the key stat there is sidespin. With my 6-iron, I know 200 rpm or less of sidespin is essentially a straight shot. When I see 416 R (left), I know it’s starting to bend right. But backspin counters sidespin, so even 800 with a wedge, which has a lot of backspin, is fine. With a driver, that’s too much spin.

BETTER, FASTER,

PHOTOGRAPHS BY OCTAVIO PASSOS/GETTY IMAGES

STRONGER

UAE National Joshua Grenville-Wood has fast become one of the longest hitters in world golf. His coach, Joe Marshall, Senior Teaching Professional at CH3, talks us through that journey.

The first time I met Josh was in 2019, when this skinny, wiry, 20-year-old rocked up to the Claude Harmon III Academy (CH3) here at The Els Club Dubai. He had come over from the UK and was living with a member at the club that he knew quite well, so we allowed Josh to come and practice at the Academy.

He was starting his MENA Tour adventure, and it got to around mid-February and he had just missed three of four cuts in a row and he asked if I could have a look at his chipping.

We worked on that, and it was literally the week later he came second in Bahrain. How much to my chipping lesson that came from I don’t know! So, it was a pretty good start!

After that it progressed to, “can you have a look at my pitching” then “can you look at my mid irons.” That then just progressed as I built a little bit of trust with Josh and I was allowed into the “circle”.

It was clear to see that Josh had speed from the first day that I saw him. Even

though he didn’t physically look it back in 2020. But he was a multi-sport athlete. I think his Dad, Gavin, said that he was doing nine sports when he was 12-yearsold and they were all high speed.

As TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) would say “there’s rocket fuel available”. But the issue was he was very wiry and he didn’t have the body to support this kind of speed and I was worried about injury and longevity especially when it came to his drives.

So I didn’t directly chase speed with him, I just knew he needed more muscle mass. That way he would naturally get faster. So indirectly we were really able to crank his speed up via his explosive training.

He managed to put on a lot of this muscle mass during Covid. So, when he came out of Covid he had built this new body that could cope with this new speed and be able to grow it more. In a way Covid, although it was a tough time, was a bit of a blessing in disguise for Josh. He came through it different person and can now play with less in-

juries plus he has got faster and he has more control of the speed from this.

After Josh’s stint competing on the DP World Tour at the start of their 2024 season. Himself, Wilco Nienaber and Marco Penge were exchanging pleasantries at the top of the tree as to who was the longest driver out of them. All three of them were around 340-yards average, which is about seven yards from the next closest guy!

On the course, his clubhead speed cruises in the low 130’s (mph). The

highest we have clocked him was actually in the winter at CH3 was 140mph clubhead speed, which was 202mph ball speed and 370 yards carry. That one was as straight as you could see, it was like a missile! He doesn’t hit it like that very often in tournaments, even though it might look like he is going hard at it, but still he’s certainly one of the longest around.

Being able to drive the ball far is always a great discussion. Technically, if Josh has it under control, he should be gain-

ing one and a half shots per round strokes gained really on most of the field. But if you don’t have a wedge game, it’s not much of an advantage! Josh has worked tirelessly over the past six months to two and a half years on his wedge game from 130 yards and in just so then he can really make that driver of his an advantage. Without a wedge game it doesn’t matter how far you hit it, because if you still hit to it 40 feet after a 340 yard drive you aren’t gaining anything.

Back in the day, his chipping was easily the worst part of his game, but it’s slowly becoming his strength. Then when you combine the two and they are both on point, he contends, it’s as simple as that really.

It’s safe to say I have never worked with anyone with Josh’s speed before. There’s not many around. One of our ethos’ at CH3 is to build speed with young, elite players which is just one of our major targets that our students go through. We want them to hit it far first, before hitting it straight.

One of the fastest young guys I did coach was Josh Hill, we got him just above 120 mph at the age of 15, which for us was a big achievement. He actually went onto win on the MENA Tour at Al Ain. So he was very fast for his age and now he is at the University of Tennessee.

But all young golfers should try and hit it as far as you can and not worry about what direction it goes in, you can worry about hitting it straighter the older you get.

If Josh keeps trending at the pace he has in the past six months, we might be at Augusta this time next year haha! He obviously has a very bright future. In his recent performances throughout the past six months, it has been no fluke.

It’s been a lot of well-structured hard work over the past two years. He has his days lined up and treats them like going to work. There is no wasted time, there’s a lot of performance stuff in there and if he sticks to these habits and keeps his mind strong with the good people around him that he does, there’s no stopping him really.

It’s going to be really exciting to track him. It will be a rollercoaster as it is with everybody, but if he just keeps doing what he’s doing both on and off the course, then he has got all the raw materials to reach the top.

LAY IT ON THE LINE

It’s all about how you start on pressure putts

putting under pressure can be a grind mentally. Like most golfers, I find that the more I focus on what the putt means for my score, the harder it becomes. That’s why I like to set my attention on something small, like the first six to eight inches of the putt.

Generally, every putt is a straight putt within the first foot. Instead of trying to focus all my energy on holing an eight-footer to win my match, I make it my job to hit a straight putt for those first six to eight inches. This way, the ball starts on my intended line and rolls true. Provided I read the putt correctly and hit the ball with the proper speed, it should take the break and find the bottom of the cup.

The next time you have a five-footer to break 80 for the first time, think about nailing the first six to eight inches of the putt and nothing more. To practice your start lines, find a relatively straight putt on the practice green, determine your line, and focus on a spot six to eight inches along the chosen track that the ball has to pass over. Then set up two tees slightly wider than the width of the ball at that spot and putt the ball through the gate. Do this several times, then find a putt that breaks slightly from left to right, then right to left, and repeat.

The more consistently you hit your start lines, the steadier and more clutch you’ll perform under pressure. —with keely levins

WEDGES

Your swing is a mess. You’re missing greens right, left, long and short. All day you must get up and down to save par. Fear not. Whether your preference is to get properly fit into a model with north of 20 loft/bounce options or your pick is a point-and-pitch model, there are plenty of choices. Need help producing greengrabbing spin? The surface roughness of grooves is specific to the loft because lower-lofted wedges behave di erently than higher-lofted ones. We fully endorse the wedges on this year’s Hot List. Trust us, they’ll help you get the job done.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Golfers dream of sucking the ball back like they’re playing walk the dog with a yo-yo. Callaway’s groove design is an effort to get players there. A 37-degree wall angle enhances the sharpness of the groove edge for extra grab on full shots. Micro-milled grooves between the regular grooves are milled at a 20-degree angle, helping spin on greenside shots. Tungsten—used for the first time in a Callaway wedge—helps position the centre of gravity in the middle of the face for control and feel.

RRP AED 745

In 2017, Cleveland said that because 84 percent of everyday golfers were playing cavity-back irons, it made little sense to play with a wedge that didn’t match the rest of the irons in the bag. That led to the development of the wider-soled, cavity-back CBX wedge. Since then, the line has built on the original premise, adding more features along the way. The latest is the introduction of a loft-dependent face finish that increases friction at impact and combines with sharper, tighter spaced grooves for more spin.

T24 RRP AED 850

WHY WE LIKE IT

When you have a proven winner, the temptation is to make modest improvements and move on. Not with these wedges. The amount of weight removed from the lower heel and replaced with the company’s ZipCore compound is nearly double from last year. The compound is a quarter of the weight of the steel it replaces, saving 21 grams that has been moved elsewhere to position the center of gravity toward the toe. This slightly increases the moment of inertia in the heel-toe and high-low directions to help mis-hits.

• Three di erent versions of ZipCore help maximise the weight saved by individual loft.

• A new face finish uses sandblasting for more spin.

• 15 options (46-60, 64 degrees); 4 sole grinds; 1 finish

The T24 line has a thinner topline, shorter, more compact blade lengths and heads that transition in shape depending on loft compared to the T23. A straight-line look on the lower, full-swing lofts (for easier transition from the short irons) moves to a rounded look on the higher lofts to emphasise shot-making finesse (open-face shots in particular). The T24 still maintains the classic teardrop shape better players prefer. Two new groove designs specific to higher and lower lofts provide more opportunity for the groove edges to interact with the ball for maximum spin. OVERALL

• The upper portion’s tapered shape improves stability.

• The shoulders of the grooves are sharper for improved spin.

• The lower lofts have 17 grooves, and the higher lofts use 15.

CREATE LOFT WITH YOUR WEDGES THE EASIEST WAY POSSIBLE

There is more than one way to add loft to a wedge shot, but some are easier than others—an important point for those who don’t have a lot of time for shortgame practice.

The method I teach a lot of golfers gets much of the work done at address. When trying to create more loft with a wedge, some players get into their traditional chipping stance (narrow feet, ball back, shaft leaning forward) and then spin the face open so that it’s pointing more skyward (above, left). That setup can work, for sure, but executing from it requires more practice and near precise execution.

Instead, you can create more height on your shots by simply standing wider and further away from the ball than normal, which lowers the shaft in relation to the ground so it’s less upright. Coupled with a forward ball position, almost where you’d play it with a driver (above, right), you’ve done most of what you need to create loft. There’s no reason to open the face. Just let the wedge trace the ground and slide under the ball through impact. You’ll pop it up every time. —with Ron Kaspriske

PUTTERS

Putters do more to control our happiness than any other club, and golfers have no excuses for not finding the right putter. More options exist today for more types of strokes: Mallets and blades have embraced stability on o -centre hits, new face designs improve roll, and heads feature di erent kinds of hosels to align with stroke type. The problem is that golfers don’t tend to get fit for their putter even though dialing in the correct specs on a putter is easier than it is for any full swing club. Our advice: If you want to improve your distance control and alignment, go with a mallet. If feel and a more compact shape are important, maybe a blade is for you.

One thing I love about mallet putters is how easy they are to align with your intended start line. Knowing this, I scratch my head when I give a lesson on the green and see a golfer step into their putts in a manner that makes it harder to get aligned properly. Let me explain:

When you are about to putt, do you set the putter down at the same time or just after you start to get into your stance? If you do either, you’re greatly increasing your chance of misaligning the putter to your line. It’s di cult to get an accurate view from this perpendicular standpoint, which is exactly what happens when you set up feet first.

Instead, always get your line from behind the ball and then set the putter down to that line before you do anything else (above). Keep in mind, you’re setting your putter down relative to the start line, which is the first few inches after you strike the ball. Also, when you do step in, don’t worry so much about being perfectly square to the line with your body. Just get in a comfortable, balanced position. —with Ron Kaspriske

The stock heads are almost 20 grams heavier than some standard models, shifting the club’s balance point lower, leading to more consistency in face rotation. One other thing all yippy putters need is more forgiveness on off-centre hits.

• Adjustable sole weights increase stability on o -center hits.

• Three models (1, 2, 4); three finishes; slant neck or plumber’s neck; head weight: 370 grams; lengths: 34, 35 inches; loft: 3 degrees

Blade putters that stretch the boundaries of offcentre-hit forgiveness seem more prevalent these days than pickleball injuries. Odyssey’s team found a method to keep the centre speed and raise it for mishits. Although that probably sounds like alchemy, for Odyssey it’s about machine learning and artificial intelligence. The odd topology on the back of these faces creates “microdeflections” for consistent roll. The urethane face coating makes all that tech feel like the company’s most favored White Hot insert.

• Soft aluminum face insert is coated with the same urethane used for the company’s famous White Hot insert.

• Four models (#1, #2, Double Wide DB, Double Wide CH); head weight: 360 grams; lengths: 33-35 inches; loft: 3 degrees

A titanium face on a putter would seem to make as much sense as a 6.2 liter V8 Hemi in a Dodge Caravan. Titanium is what makes driver faces hot, and a hot putter face seems like a recipe for binge drinking, but not here. Titanium is thin, light and strong with flexure properties. Flexing matters when you’re trying to create a putter face that intricately responds to the slightest variations in thickness, all created through artificial-intelligence simulations. Those thicknesses yield similar roll across the face.

• The lightweight, flexible face is designed with varying thicknesses to improve consistency across the face.

• Two models (One T, Two T); head weight: 355 grams; lengths: 33-35 inches; loft: 3 degrees

It involves a highly automated, computer-controlled process, but don’t assume milled putters are as easy to churn out as belt buckles or Zippo lighters. A lot of machinations make possible the beauty and complex efficiency behind these iconic Anser blade shapes. Every curve and angle was meticulously interpreted from elite player input and then matched with locating the most effective centres of gravity, weighting and even sole curvature. The purpose of all this precision is to make every stroke more, well, automatic.

For all the bodacious TV ads, you might forget that PXG is dead serious about one of the less sexy aspects of the business. Fitting is central to PXG’s philosophy, and that’s especially true for putters. These blades, which feature super-thin faces supported by a feel- and forgiveness-enhancing polymer fill, come with an array of hosel options ranging from heelshafted to armlock. The heel and toe weight ports on the sole can further customize the look you want fit to the stroke you have.

• Four models (Brandon, Closer, Dagger+, Mustang); five hosel options (double bend, plumber’s neck, heel-shafted, armlock, center-shafted); head weights: 325-415 grams; lengths: 33-38 inches; loft: 3 degrees

WHY WE LIKE IT

Someday we want someone to talk about us the way Scotty Cameron talks about his putters. His tone about these blades seems to emanate from a cathedral, and why not? His dominance in the milled-blade market isn’t an accident. Cameron and his team comb over every detail to improve these designs. Tweaks like milling out sections of the plumber’s neck and the iconic “cherry dots” redistribute mass to heel and toe sole weights. Cameron says this makes his blades “as forgiving as a mallet.” Sweet talker.

• Heel-toe sole weights match head mass to shaft lengths.

• Six models (Newport, Newport Plus, Newport 2, Newport 2 Plus, Newport 2.5 Plus, Squareback 2); head weights: 345, 355, 365 grams; lengths: 33-35 inches; loft: 3.5 degrees

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT WITH A BLADE PUTTER

If you prefer the look of a blade putter over a mallet, that’s fine, but I’ve always felt that blade models are more challenging to align. A mallet o ers more of a straight-back and straight-through feel to the stroke, but a blade seems to move on a slight in-to-in arc in relation to the line of the putt. It’s more feel versus real, but it does influence aim.

To be sure you’re lining up over your blade putter correctly, try this drill to check if you’re standing too far away from the ball—a common mistake.

Find a straight four-foot putt and set a ball down. Then, a few inches in front of it, place a ball marker, making sure both are aligned in relation to the cup. Take your address position and see if the marker still appears on-line with your ball and the hole (above, right). If it doesn’t (above, left), adjust your stance until they line up. Now go ahead and putt. —with Ron Kaspriske

LIVES Dubai, UAE

STORY I only started using TaylorMade just after coming back from my injury, and EGolf Megastore told me they wanted to start to sponsor me with clubs. So I was like sure! The driver didn’t suit me though so I stuck with Titleist for that. And as a lefthanded golfer there aren’t many options for a putter so I have an Odyssey putter which works really well. WITH HARRY GRIMSHAW

WHAT'S IN MY BAG : AHMAD SKAIK

DRIVER

SPECS Titleist TSR2 9 degree

It took me a while to find a driver that I liked and suits my game. And i finally found this one! I love how this Titleist SR2 sits nicely when I am teeing it up. Which is a good view for me. I am able to launch it high with a low spin rate to gain maximum distance.

HYBRID

SPECS TaylorMade Stealth Rescue 3 – 19 degree – Shaft Ventus HB 7-S Fujikura

My hybrid is definitely easier to hit than a 2 or 3 iron which is why I carry it. I used to play with a 3 iron but swapped it out for this as a rescue “miss” isn’t as bad – plus it’s great to use from the rough as it just comes out as a rocket and you are able to launch it high.

TaylorMade P.770 Tungsten – Shaft Project X PXi 6.0

I need to get fitted again for these actually because my back is moving much better and faster than before. So PW to 7 iron need to have smaller heads because they tend to come out a bit hot. So when you are in contention you don’t want to be worrying about that.

WEDGES

TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 SB 10 & SB 12 – Shaft Project X

I really like my wedges. It’s a part of my game that I constantly have to work on. They’re great from like 130 yards and in. I tend to always chip with my 60 degree but learning to use them all around the green now.

PUTTER

SPECS Odyessey Toulon Design Las Vegas H4.5 - Shaft Stoke Lab 70 Class

I originally was stuck between two putters but this one has the Odyssey Stroke Lab the balance of the putter is very consistent across my stroke. I am able to roll this putter so nicely and it sits great behind the ball. Plus the midnight black design is pretty cool.

I have a Saudi Riyal coin which I use as a ball marker. Years ago, I randomly found it in my wallet – I started using it, putted well and shot 2 under, so ever since then I have used it.

I have a putting aid and a slope guide always in my bag. It’s a really important aspect of my game to practice so I am constantly using it to keep sharp when it comes to putting.

SWEET TOOTH

I always have a Nature Valley protein bar in my bag. They are really nice, especially the ones that come with chocolate or caramel. There are plenty of different types to keep my energy levels going.

Considered to be one of the best courses in the Algarve, it has 9 technical holes with narrow fairways and well-protected greens. The choice is then yours. Step out onto the pristine fairways, greens and naturally beautiful surrounds of the 18-hole Le Château Golf Course, recently voted the Indian Ocean’s Best Golf Course.

For links golf lovers on the other hand, Heritage Golf Club’s new course - La Réserve Golf Links – that opened in December 2023, is a must-play.

Co-designed by former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen and acclaimed course architect Peter Matkovich, the layout is inspired by the wild open spaces of great links designs. It is the first contemporary links golf course in the Indian Ocean and served as the host venue for the 2023

AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a DP World Tour event.

LE PALMIER

Golf paradise in Mauritius

Mauritius has a very long link with golf. It was the third country in the world to discover this sport in 1844 when Mauritius was under British rule. Golf is a “market segment” that perfectly matches the upscale positioning of Mauritius. The government, through the Ministry of Tourism and the MTPA, has made golf a priority of its strategy for the tourism industry, especially during the low season.

Today, Mauritius boasts ten 18-hole and three 9-hole golf courses, each offering a unique golfing experience. What must be emphasized is that the courses are in the north, south, east, west and centre of the country. A visitor cannot go more than 15 km without meeting a green. On the other hand, around these courses, we have five-star accommodations that make golfers pampered.

The world-class golf courses have exceptional facilities and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world., surrounded by rolling mountains on one side and the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon on the other, has won first place as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Indian Ocean.

The Gymkhana Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Mauritius and, according to historic documents available, it was the 4th country club in the world where golf was played.

Another beautiful location is the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Course, which covers the southern half of Ile aux Cerfs, featuring

a naturally undulating topography with volcanic rocks, lakes, and ravines, as well as a variety of tropical trees and plants.

Two golf courses, The Heritage Golf Club, and the Mont Choisy le Golf, welcome the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, the only competition in the world that brings together the European, Sunshine and Asian Tours during the same event. The prize money of 1 million Euros is the highest for a golf tournament in Mauritius.

Mauritius has been voted by IAGTO golf tour operators as the Tropical Island Golf Destination of the Year 2024.
