Innovation and technology are disrupting things in the world of interior design and architecture. As we witness advancements across various industries, the fusion of easy-to-use technology with creative design is revolutionizing how we see and interact with our built environment. We chose the topic for the month of April to explore what has been done to advance design in the last quarter while also looking towards what the year has in store for the sector in terms of growth and ideas.
From smart homes equipped with AI-driven systems to sustainable building materials crafted using state-of-the-art techniques, the possibilities seem limitless. Not only are these advancements making spaces more functional and efficient, but they are also putting the craft of design at the forefront.
In this edition of the magazine, we are celebrating the designs/designers who brought an edge to their projects/products or are changing up the processes. From ground-breaking developments to the latest trends, there’s a whole world of possibilities out there waiting to be explored.
We’re also seeing a big push towards sustainability. From energy-efficient lighting to eco-friendly building materials, architects and designers are making sure their projects are kind to the environment.
As we ride this wave of innovation, it’s important to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity. So, for this edition of the magazine, we chose to shine a spotlight on the upcoming edition of Salone del Mobile, which is set to take place from 16th to 21st April 2024, in the Rho Fiera Milano spaces, Italy, as is tradition.

Aedas along with a consortium of architects, designs the futuristic resort –Trojena Ski Village in KSA
WORDS – SUHA SABITH
Aedas is breaking new ground in the A+D industry with its latest project, the Trojena Ski Village in NEOM. This futuristic resort, set to be the world’s first “vertical ski village,” is poised to redefine the concept of a snow destination in the GCC, offering year-round adventure sports for visitors. Scheduled for completion in 2026, Trojena is set to make history as the Gulf Region’s inaugural outdoor ski resort. Located in NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s ground-breaking giga project, the new resort will host the 10th Asian Winter Games in 2029, marking a significant milestone for the region.
Designed to accommodate both seasonal visitors and permanent residents, Trojena Ski Village will feature a plethora of amenities, including year-round skiing opportunities, retail outlets, restaurants, luxury accommodations, and more. By 2030, the resort aims to welcome
700,000 annual visitors and house up to 7,000 residents, making it a bustling hub of activity. Led by a consortium of international architecture firms, including Aedas, the design of Trojena Ski Village represents a bold departure from traditional ski resort typologies. Aedas’ innovative approach challenges conventions, envisioning a superstructure that integrates multiple levels of mobility and connection vertically, rather than horizontally. “‘For millennia, ski villages have had the same formula with multiple plots and buildings connected by roads. We challenged this convention by asking what if the village could be a building. This led us to dream up a superstructure that has the scale of a village but with all the connections and mobility happening vertically across several levels”, said Ignacio Gomez, Aedas’ Global Design Principal. The resort’s multi-level activation promises visitors a seamless tran-
sition between experiences, facilitated by a range of vertical mobility devices. From skiing and mountain biking to zip-lining and Alpine coasters, Trojena offers a diverse array of outdoor activities for guests to enjoy year-round.
Designed to blend harmoniously with its natural surroundings, Trojena Ski Village is sculpted to complement the natural topography of the NEOM mountain range. With a monumental scale that echoes the landscape, the resort is envisioned as an extension of the mountain itself, seamlessly integrating with the terrain over time.
In addition to its architectural ingenuity, Trojena Ski Village prioritizes sustainability at every stage of development. From energy-efficient building materials to innovative snowmaking technologies, the resort is designed to minimize its environmental footprint while maximizing guest comfort and enjoyment.

Sustainability at Salone
Salone’s president affirms commitment to sustainability policy for their upcoming edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano
The latest edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano is shining a spotlight on sustainability, making it a the focal point in every aspect of its operations – socially, environmentally, and economically. The goal is to pioneer cutting-edge solutions while maintaining a focus on human, community, and environmental well-being, all while showcasing the beauty of design each year.
To further its commitment to sustainability, the event organisers are refining and enhancing its Sustainability Policy. This policy has already been integrated into the company’s strategy and management, recognizing the importance of responsible resource management in today’s interconnected world.
The renewed Sustainability Policy, endorsed by Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, articulates the event’s belief in creating enduring value while upholding ethical principles of integrity, honesty, inclusion, and transparency. It sets forth concrete objectives aimed at driving the event towards inclusive, responsible, and sustainable development. “After the 2022 edition, which put sustainability right at the heart of its content with the large installation by Mario Cucinella, and then being awarded ISO 20121 certification in 2023, we believe it is crucial to continue along our path to sustainability by officially setting out our strategies and objectives, and measuring our progress in a timely manner,” said Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano. “For this reason, we are renewing, strengthening and perfecting the Sustainability Policy drawn up last year – this revision is useful to us in terms of acquiring increasing awareness as we go about our daily business, as well as in building an even more constructive dialogue with all the stakeholders involved. Mixing Luxury, Art, and Culinary Excellence

Gaggenau in collaboration with Lamborghini and Firetti Contemporary Gallery presented a series of events under the title – The Suhoor Edition
Renowned luxury appliances brand – Gaggenau teamed up with automatic giant – Lamborghini and Firetti Contemporary Gallery for a series of events in Ramadan to further expand on their artistic explorations. The collaboration between the brands stands as a testament to the fusion of automotive opulence, culinary mastery, and artistic expression. To delve deeper into the essence of this collaboration, we spoke to representative from Gaggenau - Tomas Alonso, CEO BSH Middle East, to uncover the driving forces behind this unique partnership. Martino Picotti, general manager of Lamborghini in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and Mara Firetti, founder and manager partner of Firetti Contemporary Gallery shared their input on the collaboration and what it means for the design+art industry.
How did the collaboration between Gaggenau and Lamborghini come about? Why was the artist – Ghaleb Havila specifically chosen for the collaboration?
Tomas Alonso: We always strive to create holistic experiences for our clients where they are surrounded by a certain calibre of products, features and brands. Ghaleb
14 INNOVATION IN DESIGN identity.ae
Havila was chosen to collaborate with Lamborghini & Gaggenau because we wanted to showcase the humanistic part of the art and culture while enjoying outstanding brands at the same event. We wanted to craft an event where we did not just talk about brands. Luxury is not confined to a single channel or sector. It is closely associated with emotions and therefore should have specific messaging of brand exclusivity and heritage. Without highlighting the “how”, Lamborghini and Gaggenau can replicate these sensorial emotions to people. That’s the beauty of this kind of collaboration.
Martino Picotti: One of our main objectives is to deliver memorable experiences that engage our guests on different levels. The winning ingredient is to focus on their lifestyle and interests, be it luxury cars, yachts, watches, art pieces, fine dining, etc. Then we create a connection among those various elements: this is the rationale of our collaboration with Gaggenau and Firetti Contempoary.
Mara Firetti: The collaboration between Gaggenau, Lamborghini and Firetti emerged from a shared vision of excellence and a desire to celebrate cultural richness during Ramadan. Ghaleb Hawila, our chosen artist for this collaboration, perfectly embodies the essence of this season through his Arabic calligraphy artworks.
What role did culinary culture play in the overall experience of the Suhoor event, and how does Gaggenau contribute to elevating that experience?
Alonso: We strategically scheduled this event to take place during the holy month of Ramadan. For us, it’s very im-
portant to keep traditions while being respectful with the different cultures worldwide. Having said that, Gaggenau is committed to delivering the full potential of its products whereby it’s not only felt but also experienced. According to this concept, we defined a proper culinary experience for our customers to appreciate delectable menus crafted via our outstanding products.
How does Gaggenau approach partnerships and collaborations to create experiences for its audience?
Alonso: Gaggenau is a brand born more than 340 years ago. It’s a brand shaped by heritage and craftsmanship. The brand has grown through the years and has understood the need to adapt its lines, features, and designs according to today’s innovations. Our key word or the main intention of preparing these events are: Unforgettable Experiences. Following this idea, Gaggenau looks to hosting events at or in joine partnerships with remarkable places such as Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi, EXPO2022 or at Expo City, The Royal Atlantis or at our very own Galleria. Spaces that add a touch of luxury and share an extra added value to our customers while they enjoy these exclusive dinners.
Looking ahead, are there any future collaborations or events in the pipeline for Gaggenau?
Alonso: We will definitely look towards more collaborations of such kind in the future. In my opinion, highlighting luxury brands involves a lot of subtlety. A luxury brand cannot be continuously highlighted with a message in the markets as they lose their exclusivity. Having said that, we have the obligation to create beautiful and differential experiences among clients, to stay ahead of the curve and continue creating the desire to purchase our brand. This is the direction that we take while forecasting our events.

Kelly Nunes’ artworks illuminate conservation through healing
WORDS – SUHA SABITH
Kelly Nunes unveiled ‘The Celestial Cycle’, a collection of five artworks at the Age of Union’s Earth Center in Montreal, Canada. The collection was commissioned by Age of Union’s founder Dax Dasilva over the course of 10 years. The series, comprises of the Earth Room, Sun Room, Moon Room, Glacier Cave, and Black Hole Room, delves into themes of care and nature to address the discourse on healing and well-being.
Nunes’ creations serve as a poignant reminder of our disconnection from the outdoors, aiming to reignite a connection with nature’s healing qualities. Through each piece, the creative director and multi-disciplinary artist, seeks to instil awe and reverence, urging viewers to take action against climate change.
Within the series, Glacier Cave transports visitors into the heart of a melting glacier, utilising post-consumer plastics, responsive lighting, and soundscapes to evoke the sensations of thawing ice structures.
Earth Room welcomes guests into a lush garden surrounded by post-consumer paper sculptures, accompanied by soothing sounds proven to reduce stress hormones. This was done in collaboration with Nicolas Fonseca.
Moon Room offers a close encounter with the celestial body, projecting a rotating image of the moon, enabling new perspectives and inspiring feelings of sensations of reverence.
Sun Room, a collaborative effort with Adam Hummell, functions as a space for healing and meditation, featuring a sculpture of modulating light frequencies, ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’ lamps, and therapeutic soundtracks tuned to 432 hertz. Drawing inspiration from the physics of black holes, and the profound transcendent effect they play on our collective consciousness, Black Hole Room immerses viewers in generative video content driven by audio input and body tracking.
Through materials like post-consumer plastic and reconstituted wastepaper, Nunes prompts discourse on conservation and degradation, emphasizing the healing power of nature present within each artwork.
Age of Union, founded in 2021 by Dax Dasilva, is a non-profit environmental alliance supporting global changemakers dedicated to preserving the planet’s species and ecosystems.

Shifting Sands: A Battle Song
Contemporary artist Manal AlDowayan brings together the voices of over 1000 Saudi Arabian women in a multimedia art installation for the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale
WORDS – JENNIFER COPLEY
Artist Manal AlDowayan bears witness to the position and representation of women on a global and local scale. Renowned for her participatory practice that brings together women from across Saudi Arabia, AlDowayan creates powerful moments for interaction and community. Navigating and documenting the changing cultural landscape of her homeland, the artist is perfectly positioned to represent Saudi Arabia at this year’s Venice Biennale. Shifting Sands: A Battle Song was commissioned by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture’s Visual Arts Commission and is curated by Jessica Cerasi and Maya El Khalil and assistant curator Shadin AlBulaihed.
Shifting Sands: A Battle Song amplifies the voices of Saudi Arabian women on an international scale. For the project, AlDowayan held three workshops in Al Khobar, Jeddah, and Riyadh. Participants of all ages were invited to join group singing lessons led by the artist and Ileana Yasmin, a vocal coach for the Music Commission within the Ministry of Culture in Riyadh. The women were asked to consider their representation in the context of the international media and to write about and illustrate their perceptions of each other. The result is a highly personal meditation on iden-
tity within a global context. The illustrations, texts and songs created in the workshops will be incorporated into the installation. The work is an expression of self-determinism and a document of collectivity.
AlDowayan is well known for her artworks that foreground the collaborative voices of women. For example, in 2023, she presented From Shattered Ruins, New Life Shall Bloom at the Guggenheim, New York. This piece contained a collection of porcelain scrolls annotated with text sourced from popular culture, media, and literature, that evidence the oppression of women. The work was activated when visitors were called upon to observe and then crush the porcelain objects. The words and their significance were destroyed, leaving space for new narratives to be written. Suspended Together (2011) contains 200 fiber-
glass dove sculptures. Each flightless bird has a permission to travel document written across its body. The documents were submitted by leading women from Saudi Arabia. The document is issued by an appointed male guardian and must be carried by every female regardless of age or position. In such works, AlDowayan creates powerful opportunities for understanding and action.
AlDowayan’s contribution to the Venice Biennale promises to be an evocative experience that celebrates visibility and autonomy. In a statement, the artist explains, “Shifting Sands: A Battle Song is a call for solidarity in the context of the global representation of women in and from Saudi Arabia, and a rally to take ownership of our identity as we navigate both the physical space we inhabit and the narratives that have historically defined us.”

Located in Dubai Hills Mall, the latest Zafran restaurant designed by Broadway Interiors marks a significant milestone for the brand. Chris Barnes, the founder of Broadway Interiors, spearheaded the project, setting a new benchmark for the brand's interior standards that will be adopted in all future branches across the region.
“Being located in such a competitive and high-profile shopping destination, we saw an excellent opportunity to elevate Zafran brand,” said Barnes. “The restaurant is situated right next to the VIP entrance on the ground floor, offering dual access to accommodate the significant footfall from both directions. The design caters to the diverse clientele that Zafran generally attracts, providing varied dining experiences to suit their different preferences.” The interior design concept masterfully captures the spirit of Zafran’s culinary offerings without resorting to literal interpretations. Warm hues, natural textures, and an array of seating options intersect to create an ambiance that compliments the gastronomic journey.
A key highlight of the design is the prominent placement of the open kitchen, allowing patrons to witness the culinary process firsthand. “We showcased the kitchen prominently, allowing guests to see their food being prepared, which is quite unique for a mall setting,” emphasizes Barnes. Striking a balance between luxury and cost-effectiveness, Barnes spoke about his passion for crafting spaces that create interest without significant expenditure. He was able to strike a similar balance in the Zafran project utilising a dynamic palette. “We’ve used a palette that appears luxurious,
yet is economically applied, delivering value to our clients”.
Upon entering Zafran, guests are greeted by a bespoke seating arrangement featuring a circular red velvet booth, serving as the focal point of the space. Complemented by terrazzo-patterned marble tables and custom-made chairs adorned with warm wooden frames and cane detailing, the ambiance exudes elegance and sophistication. The space also features a variety of upholstered seats in muted green and pink hues. Central to the design narrative is the infusion of lush greenery, seamlessly integrated into the dining experience through strategically placed planters. This oasis not only enhances the restaurant’s ambiance but also provides a refreshing contrast to the urban mall setting.
Collaborating with Design Infinity, the fit-out contractor for the project, Broadway Interiors harmoniously blends premium accents with cost-effective materials, resulting in an elevated dining environment without the added expenditure.
“Zafran’s redesign needed to be understated yet remarkable, a task we achieved by focusing on layout, material harmony, and creating different dining zones that cater to varied demographics,” Barnes continues. “The design DNA we’ve introduced is neutral and sophisticated, mirroring the mall’s luxurious vibe and ensuring that the true star remains the food.”

Nokha Village Community Centre by Sanjay Puri Architects features a curvilinear volume
–
WORDS – SUHA SABITH PHOTOGRAPHY
VINAY PUNJWANI
Sanjay Puri Architects recently completed the Nokha Village Community Centre, located in the desert region of Nokha in Rajasthan, India. The sweeping curvilinear volume rises up from the northeastern corner, looping around the site and rising up on the northwest corner to create a north facing open courtyard.
The brief of the clients was to create a memorial for their father, Padmaramji Kularia. Nokha is a district in Rajasthan that encompasses 144 small villages. Studies of the vicinity and the current facilities in the village schools and the village areas fueled the need to create a community centre for all age groups.
The main spiral building of 9,000sqft becomes an inclined garden with two varying slopes, allowing it to be used for recreation
and gatherings, and offering views of the surrounding desert landscape from the rooftop.
Beneath the garden, at the lower eastern side, there is a small museum with a children’s digital library on the higher western side. The southern side is enveloped in a grass covered earth berm to mitigate heat gain in response to the desert climate, where temperatures of 35 to 40°C are common for 8 months annually. The building forms an open courtyard with an amphitheatre to provide a space for music performances, talks, and social interaction.
The ovoid library is sheathed in natural sandstone screens derived from traditional architecture in Rajasthan, with the stone being sourced from the immediate surrounding area.
These screens reduce the heat gain and create different shadow patterns throughout

the day. The library serves all the village schools in the region, most of which do not have libraries of their own. The museum is lit indirectly by scooped recesses within the roof garden berms.
To facilitate the servicing of large gatherings, a linear amenity block housing, cafeteria, toilets, stores, and parking flanks the entrance at the northern side.
The rooftop gardens, the stone screens, the north facing courtyard, and southern grass berm collectively reduce the heat gain, rendering the spaces energy efficient. Rainwater harvesting and water recycling make the building and its construction sustainable, using local craftsmen and contract labor with materials available in the region.
A building with a built up area of only 9,000sqft (810 sqm) generates a 9,000sqft rooftop garden and a 27,000sqft open auditorium and, in addition to the enclosed spaces, generates usable space that is four times more than the built space.

A look at the regional design industry’s phenomenal growth and future with experts from the hospitality, commercial and residential sectors weighing in
In collaboration with Downtown Design, identity spoke to renowned designers from the region, to get insights into some of the key factors driving change in region across the various sectors.
Ralf Steinhauer
Director at RSP
As per Steinhauer, the surge in projects, particularly in luxury residential, boutique hospitality, and office spaces, presents a platform for architects to showcase innovative designs that cater to regional needs while competing globally. However, navigating ambitious project timelines remains a challenge. Steinhauer emphasizes the need for adaptation and streamlined processes to ensure timely delivery. “As a global firm with almost 70 years of experience and 15 years in the MENA region, RSP is well-catered to the deal with these challenges as we are adapted to demanding clients and their aggressive deadlines. Our teams have the expertise required in anticipating client needs, mitigating risks and delivering high quality projects, having successfully completed many projects in this region and delivering our design on time to meet with our client’s launch dates”. Steinhauer highlights RSP’s approach to commercial design in Dubai, emphasizing communal spaces,
sustainability, and inclusivity. Integrating elements of play and wellness, the firm’s designs foster creativity and support employees’ needs, including dedicated spaces for maternity. “Clients are increasingly expecting designs that not only incorporate the latest trends but also prioritize sustainability practices, reflecting the cosmopolitan status of Dubai”.
“We employ tools for office performance evaluation to ensure that our designs not only meet but exceed expectations in terms of functionality and occupant experience. Seamlessly integrating technology, such as interactive screens and collaborative applications, enhances teamwork and connectivity within the workplace and beyond. Lastly, our dedication to sustainability extends to our own commercial space, where we are currently outfitting out RSP’s new studio in Dubai with eco-friendly features, with more details to be revealed soon”.
Jonathan Ashmore Founding Principal of ANARCHITECT
Ashmore shed light on the shifting landscape of high-end residential projects in the UAE, reflecting on the evolution of client preferences and design approaches.
He notes that the transition of people from ‘a transient population’ to a ‘more permanent’
mindset among clients has led to a demand for bespoke designs. “We have seen clients focus more on the choice of materials, looking for longevity, sustainability and authenticity as they see this as long term”. ANARCHITECT integrates individual craftsmanship into their designs, creating unique statements tailored to each client's preferences.
Ashmore also spoke in depth about the opportunities and challenges presented by the digital procurement – with the former outweighing the latter. “The challenge lies with patience and critical decision making, having such a variety and availability at the push of a button meaning that some purchases or decisions might be made prematurely by a client ahead of a space being fully resolved. Another complexity is to do with scale and material quality; until the client sees an object or artefact in person, it is difficult for them to judge the curation and the placement of the piece in space accurately. On the other hand, the sourcing opportunity and options due to the rise of these platforms does outweigh the challenges by providing an expansive variety of options to curate from. Our clients sometimes prefer to mix the digital and traditional procurement, particularly dependent on whether the client and project is located”. Looking ahead, Jonathan anticipates a trend towards repurposing

existing structures for high-end residential projects, mirroring movements seen in more established markets. “Now that the UAE’s residential market has shown sustained growth over the years and central key locations are now densely occupied, I believe this opportunity will begin to present itself organically and ANARCHITECT as a global practice has significant experience in delivering such projects for aesthete clients”.
Pooja Shah-Mulani Partner, Design Director at LW Shah-Mulani from LW Design spoke about the growing demand for luxurious projects in the hospitality sector. She spoke in-depth about the multifaceted needs of today’s travellers and how they challenge industry stakeholders to innovate and redefine luxury. “Our newest project SIRO One Za’abeel has found a niche in the market and targeted a particular cus-
tomer group and made a luxury offering suited for high performing athletes and sportsmen. Luxury is no longer a singular definition, but a constantly evolving emotion”.
As per Shah-Mulani, local contextualization has always been crucial to the design process, with firms recently shifting from a generic citywide context to specific narratives tailored to each neighbourhood. By embedding elements of local culture, heritage, and surroundings into their designs, firms can successfully create contextual projects. Shah-Mulani points to LW’s award-winning refurbishment project - Bab al shams as a good example of this style.
While branded furniture adds value to design, the designer notes the growing importance of bespoke furniture and collectible pieces in creating unique guest experiences. In her words, “something that has been designed for just this project can perhaps be seen as more luxurious than a beautiful product from a brand that can be found in other properties”.
To ensure designs reflect contemporary travellers’ preferences while maintaining timelessness and sophistication, LW Design focuses on differentiation and storytelling.
Shah-Mulani also touched on the crucial role of digital innovations in enhancing guest satisfaction and convenience in hospitality spaces. “SIRO is the first hotel project we have worked on that has used technology and digital innovation to enhance guest experience. While specific artwork has been used to mimic the rhythm of the human body, it is displayed in the public areas on digital screens to create a dynamic synergy between the guests and the space”.
“User friendly interfaces that enhance guest experience is key, no one wants an over complicated guestroom management system that disrupts a guestroom experience”. Looking ahead, the designer anticipates a continued demand for iconic hospitality projects, particularly in emerging markets like Saudi Arabia. “Currently projects are not only created by designers but

in collaboration with the operators and clients who have carefully selected the brand that is specifically related to this location”.
Mihir Sanganee
Co-founder and Creative Director of Designsmith
Sanganee spoke about the transformation of the A+D sector, moving towards sustainability, digitalisation, and user-centric design. The designer spoke about the immense opportunities in the region, where a blend of cultural heritage and modern aspirations fuels demand for iconic projects. As per Sanganee, this is especially relevant in the UAE, KSA, and Qatar where he has witnessed a surge in luxury experiences across commercial and hospitality sectors, catering to diverse audiences' evolving preferences. However, these opportunities are not without its challenges, says Sanganee. Challenges such as rapid technological ad-
vancements and clients' expectations necessitate agility and continuous learning. “For one of our projects in the DIFC, we used intricate CNC metal dividers with one of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s poems, drawing inspiration from local literature. We also crafted a 3D metal sculpture of the UAE’s map and His Highness’ Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s portrait”.
“For Fil - Florist & Cafe in Abu Dhabi, the entire space was designed in a rock faced interior with no straight walls reminiscent of our client’s ancestral home from the Hajar mountains from the eastern emirates. Even the decor larger rock pieces were transported in directly from the mountains to maintain the authenticity of the concept”. Sanganee believes in staying ahead with a proactive approach to research, collaboration with innovators, and engagement with the community. “We have weekly lunch and learns to interact with new vendors and suppliers, travel to global trade
and design events, and continuously develop and redesign the brief to fulfil requirements of the present day and the future”.
One such regional event that has made a significant mark on the industry is Downtown Design, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and showcased a diverse selection of products, design talks and activations. The growth of the fair’s participant list and size is a great indicator of the growing interest global clients have in developing projects in the region.

Measured Architecture transforms a house in Vancouver, Canada while maintaining its historical charm
WORDS

Designed by Measured Architecture and landscaped by Paul Sangha Creative, the family house in Vancouver, Canada, preserves the historical charm of the original house while adding a contemporary cubic structure.
“Although my aesthetic is modern, I have a deep appreciation for history and loved knowing that the building, property and neighbourhood had lots of stories to tell already,” says one of the homeowners, a CEO in the fashion industry who lives there with her husband and their 11- and 13-year-old boys.
Through every step, this project was all about connecting and harmonising history with modernity. The starting point: a 418-square-metre, grand Edwardianera Foursquare house built in 1910. “An interior wall was torn down in favour of an open atrium that spans all four levels of the house and features an uninterrupted racing stripe of glass that unifies the rear façade and becomes an illuminated lantern wall at night,” say
One of the goals was also to introduce “contemporary interventions to draw the building into the present,” according to the architects who designed a modern, steel steel-clad cubic structure during a second phase. “The top portion houses a two-car garage and wall-mounted bicycle storage system,” describes the team from Measured Architecture. “Below that, the pool house stands in cool relief as a modernist geometric form angling on the perpendicular of the infinity pool edge. The upper exterior portion of the structure is clad in mirrors, which not only camouflage the vehicles parked inside the garage, but also effectively multiply the lush backyard plantings.” In total, it took five years to achieve the result. It was, however, worth the wait: The house won the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) Special Jury Award for Heritage Retention and Modernization in 2016.

The fluid flow between interior and exterior areas is further strengthened thanks to the landscaping. “We aimed to create a series of diverse zones that harmoniously coexist under a unified design concept,” says Paul Sangha, principal landscape architect and founder of Paul Sangha Creative. Among these zones are a nature walk, a sports court area and pavilion, a trellised walkway connecting the veranda to the garage and a tranquil lounge space by the poolside. The inspiration for the palette came from the serene colours of the lakes and oceans of the Pacific Northwest for a serene feel. “Existing greenery is preserved and enhanced with a variety of indigenous plants, embracing rewilding principles whenever possible to minimise water consumption, pesticide use, and the need for fertilizers, while also promoting ecological balance,” says Sangha.
Reflecting a sense of connexion and cohesiveness throughout, both the architecture (of the heritage home and the new structure) and the landscaping dialogue with each other in perfect harmony.
“Sitting outdoors in the serene, tranquil space is my favourite spot,” says the homeowner. “After a stressful day, it becomes my sanctuary.”

Agraduate of architecture from the Glasgow School of Art (2010), Richy Almond spent few years working in London’s luxury interior design industry before a shift in 2014. That year, he commissioned some architectural metalwork for a residential project and realised it was time for a change – or rather, a return to basics. His idea for Novocastrian consisted in fusing a family heritage in manufacturing with his own creative aspirations. Coming from a long lineage of shipbuilders in Newcastle upon Tyne – a former mining village in North East England, which was once one of the great cradles of the Industrial Revolution – Almond has been always been captivated by the history of his homeland and family. The summer holidays of his youth were spent at his father’s small industrial metal fabrication shop.
“Novocastrian is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship and innovation,” says Almond. “It is the embodiment of a vision to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, creating pieces that will stand the test of time.”
Handcrafted in a workshop and design studio built in the 1950s in Washington, England, every product is imagined becoming an heirloom, to be passed from generation to generation, borrowing from the industrial relics of the region while relying on innovation. “I am deeply inspired by the rhythm and repetition of the railways, the elegant yet utilitarian iron structure of a Victorian bridge, the graceful, hydrodynamic curving hull of a steel ship,” confesses Almond. “[At the same time], our designs are refined and forward-thinking. We are continually exploring new ways to work with metal, which is the backbone of what we do.”
Case in point: Novocastrian’s inaugural lighting range, which evokes the lattice of the overhead power lines and intriguing saucer-like pin insulators which adorn them. Almond had many chances to observe the power lines that inspired the range during countless train journeys between Newcastle and the British capital. Aptly named “Insulator,” the new collection comprises four core pieces, including a pendant, a table lamp and two wall lamps – all of which allow endless configurations and bespoke finishes. For example, the pendants are available with four different glass shade styles, which can be stacked in a variety of ways or clustered to create chandeliers.
“Conceptually the lights take a functional, utilitarian part of the urban landscape that many of us encounter every day, reinterpret it and elevate it to become something special,” says Almond. “It showcases something often mundane in a new light, highlighting the overlooked beauty of our industrial landscape.”
With a growing team of 12 people, Novocastrian reflects a passion for both design and the process of making through unique pieces that honour the past while looking toward the future with truly timeless results.

Patriarche, the augmented architecture agency, designed the interiors of Gearbox, in collaboration with the video game company. Following the triumph of their previous venture in Quebec City, where they clinched the prestigious Grand Prix du Design, Gearbox and Patriarche reunited their creative forces to craft a workspace that seam-
lessly intertwines functionality with aesthetics. The Montreal studio boasts a distinctive layout, characterized by its rectangular and elongated floor plan, presenting an intriguing design challenge. Patriarche embraced this architectural canvas, employing varied ambiences and dynamic colour contrasts to outline distinct zones. This innovative approach not
only injected vitality into the space but also fostered a sense of cohesion and ease of navigation for the team members.
Comprising of open-space workstations, enclosed offices, meeting rooms, and lounge areas, Gearbox’s Montreal studio epitomizes versatility in spatial planning. Each area was meticulously tailored to accommodate specific

requirements, nurturing collaboration, individual focus, and relaxation. This holistic approach to functional diversity ensures that every team member is situated in an environment conducive to productivity and well-being.
Patriarche pushed the boundaries of conventional workspace design to conceive a distinctive concept. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant urban energy and industrial heritage of Montreal’s Old Port neighbourhood, the studio’s fit-out incorporates elements of street art and pays homage to 90s pop culture, resulting in a design language that is both bold and evocative. Eclectic furniture pieces, including stools resembling tree trunks and a monumental meeting table supported by wooden branch legs, infuse the space with originality and add a subtle nod to nature. Quirky details,
like the yellow curtain – playfully nicknamed the ‘shower’ – reclaimed from a welding workshop, adds an unexpected layer to the space.
An artistic collaboration with Julien Lebargy gave rise to the centrepiece of this project: a reproduction of his thought-provoking work, “Little Boy Bomb,” prompting contemplation on humanity’s relationship with war. This integration of art and design enriches the studio with a sense of dynamism and inspiration, fostering an environment of innovation and creativity.
Through a harmonious blend of originality and boldness, Gearbox and Patriarche have brought their collective vision to fruition, culminating in a one-of-a-kind workplace where every detail narrates a compelling story of ingenuity and imagination.

Baranzate Ateliers is back in Milan for its eagerly awaited second edition, promising an even bigger and bolder showcase compared to its highly successful debut during Milan Design Week in 2022. Occupying a massive 7,300 square meter industrial building at Via Gaudenzio Fantoli 16/3, near Linate, this year's program will feature art, collectible design, and performances, aiming to be a major highlight of the design week.
Conceived by Zaventem Ateliers, a creative hub founded by Belgian designer and architect Lionel Jadot in 2019, Baranzate Ateliers is the latest in a series of trailblazing initiatives which have seen the transformation of vast industrial “wastelands” around Brussels, Paris, Lisbon and Milan into dynamic showcases for pioneering design talent. With a core mission emphasizing manual and experimental craftsmanship, their hive-like approach fosters a community of like-minded makers, encouraging collective and innovative artistry.
The curatorial program of Baranzate Ateliers features vibrant new works by 14 designers from Zaventem Ateliers, showcasing a deep commitment to societal and environmental values. From fortress-inspired furniture to objects crafted from unconventional materials like clay, sand, and gravel, the highlights
include wood-crafted designs by Arno Declerq, abstract tapestries by KRJST Studio, and bronze LED pendant lights by DIM Atelier, among others. Additionally, 11 specially invited designers and design studios, primarily from France and Belgium, will present brandnew series, including stone and wood creations by Studio Khachatryan, furniture handcrafted from recycled materials by Middernacht & Alexander, and monochrome wall sculptures by Marijke De Cock.
“Baranzate Ateliers is a hub of contemporary excellence, merging collectible design with a dedicated curatorial vision,” says Lionel Jadot. “The radical 7,300 sqm space amplifies the relevance of the showcased creations, converging contemporary talent with historical remnants and collectively pushing boundaries towards poetic beauty. Leading the way towards a collaborative approach to collectible design, the event echoes the Zaventem Ateliers motto: strength lies in unity. It fosters a philosophy centred on the sharing of spaces, ideas, and energies in order to cultivate distinct and positive emulation.” Rooted in Belgium, Zaventem Ateliers aims to foster a culture of sharing places, ideas, and energies, fostering a unique and positive environment for creative exploration and collaboration.

Technogym celebrates its 40th anniversary with 40 designers
WORDS – SUHA SABITH
This year’s Milan Design Week marks a significant milestone for Technogym as the renowned wellness brand commemorates its 40th anniversary with a special exhibition titled ‘Design to Move’. The exhibition will showcase 40 unique Technogym Benches, each designed by a different international designer or artist.
The ‘Design to Move’ exhibition delves into the intricate relationship between design and wellness, blending style with functionality and emotion with tangibility – a cornerstone of Technogym’s ethos since its inception. Founded by Nerio Alessandri in his family garage at the age of 22, Technogym began as a fusion of Alessandri’s passion for technology and design (“TECHNO”) with his dedication to exercise (“GYM”). Over the years, the brand has evolved from a fitness equipment company into
a comprehensive ecosystem promoting a wellness lifestyle, becoming a prominent figure in Italian design along the way.
Using the Technogym Bench as a canvas, the exhibition features the creative contributions of renowned designers such as Antonio Citterio, Nendo, Patricia Urquiola, Kelly Hoppen, Piero Lissoni, Walter de Silva, Rolf Sachs, Elena Salmistraro, Michele Bönan, and many others. Each designer offers a unique interpretation of movement, showcasing the versatility of the Technogym Bench as a functional yet artistic piece. Following the conclusion of Milan Design Week, the specially designed Technogym Benches will be auctioned in partnership with Sotheby’s, with proceeds benefiting UNICEF – an initiative that aligns with Technogym’s commitment to promoting global well-being. The project was collabora-
tively conceived with acclaimed architect and designer Giulio Cappellini and curated by Artistic Director Bruna Roccasalva. Roccasalva gathered the artists and designers from around the world, inspiring them to explore the concept of wellness through their individual artistic and cultural perspectives.
The inauguration of the exhibition, scheduled for Monday, April 15th, coincides with the celebration of Made in Italy Day, established by the Italian government in honour of the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci.
Reflecting on the significance of the exhibition, Nerio Alessandri, Founder and CEO of Technogym, emphasized the importance of movement in enhancing quality of life. “As Leonardo taught us, movement is the cause of all forms of life. In the last 40 years we have been working every day to help people live a better life thanks to wellness. Design has always been a key element of our journey, a strong ally to turn functional into emotional and needs into aspiration. We are proud that so many designers and artists have joined our dream of putting the world back in motion” said Alessandri.
As Technogym continues to champion wellness through innovation and design, ‘Design to Move’ serves as a testament to the brand’s enduring commitment to fostering a healthier, more active world.

Visionnaire is set to unveil Nomad at Salone del Mobile Milano 2024
WORDS – SUHA SABITH
The meta-luxury brand - Visionnaire, is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary with the unveiling of “Nomad” at Salone del Mobile Milano 2024. The concept of Nomad is thought to be the essence of a long journey distilled into a living space. It’s said to be about celebrating beauty in everyday life while embracing a sense of movement and exploration. Nomadism, in this context, isn’t about lacking a home; it’s about prioritizing discovery and the quest for new horizons. The design of the collection reflects this ethos. It involves organic architecture that avoids sharp edges for soft, inviting curves. The colour palette is subdued, creating a serene atmosphere akin to a desert landscape.
The “Nomad” collection is the result of the intersection of different creative worlds that have collaborated with the brand over the years, such as Alessandro La Spada, Mau-
ro Lipparini, Marco Piva, Draga&Aurel, Studiopepe, m2atelier, and new visions of artists capable of interpreting Visionnaire’s artdesign DNA, such as Matteo Cibic, Naqsh collective, CaCO3, Michele Astolfi, Gupica, and Hagit Pincovici. The mural – Shawl AlNada is created by Naqsh collective for their inuagral collaboration with Visionnaire. This imposing work, 4 meters in length, is a carved wooden panel with engravings and three-dimensional symbols, enriched by the insertion of brass elements.
Alessandro La Spada’s Babylon Circle sofa follows the organic lines of the walls and develops the seat in a soft curve. Mauro Lipparini’s Villa D’Este kitchen also displays organic
angles and celebrates the combined dimension of living. Alessandro La Spada’s secret wall, Duncan, is a true architectural treasure. On one occasion, it reveals the presence of a kitchen inside, making this space unique yet functional. The wall transforms, revealingbehind the sophisticated wooden surface - the new Eidos walk-in closet by Fabio Bonfà, created with a lightweight structure in metal and ribbed glass. Bonfà’s second design is the new upholstered Boid – characterized by a linear wooden structure outlining the perimeters of the upholstered volumes.
Marco Piva creates a wellness unit that resembles an architectural composition of rounded volumes named – Tharis. Studiopepe, designers of the “L’impero dei sensi” project, continue the development of the Blanches mirror line, characterized by the insertion of hand-engraved symbols on the surface and concealed by a curtain of thin strips of leather.
The new Muse screen, created by Draga&Aurel features Aurel’s painting in a printed organza which during movement seems to reproduce the gesture of painting. The Nubia console by Hagit Pinconvic is a monolithic structure that is akin to a contemporary totem. Similarly, Matteo Cibic’s Siona bar cabinet enhances the singularity of curved forms and sinuous volumes through the skillful combination of materials such as brushed metal and lacquered wood.
Visionnaire will be at Salone del Mobile Milano 2024 from April 16 to 21, with its stand at Pavilion 9 | L11 – M06.

able journey of recovery and processing in Italy. Through a fully traceable upcycling chain, it generates social and environmental value for the community. When applied to Listone Giordano parquet flooring, Graphit transforms the material texture, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. This is achieved through a meticulous industrial process, involving the application of a pigmented base followed by a layer of graphite powder paste. The final touch includes the application of a protective finishing layer of opaque oil, meticulously crafted to enhance durability and beauty.
By transforming inert materials into functional and beautiful design elements, Listone Giordano and Alisea exemplify a commitment to sustainability and creativity, offering a glimpse into the future of responsible luxury design.

Harrat desk organiser by Studio Niko Kapa
Part of the collection designed by Niko Kapa for AlUla, KSA, the Harrat desk organizer was inspired by Saudi volcanic craters and Islamic geometric patterns. The construction of the product uses one of the area’s most abundant natural resources: sand. Dessert sand is the main of an environmentally conscious cement composite containing recycled AshCrete as a bonding agent for sand.

Characters from SABI
by Sabina Blasiotti
The Characters collection is informed by Japanese calligraphy, but each piece possesses its own expressional character. The furniture is sculpted using cedar wood which is burnt on the surface to obtain a superficial layer of carbon that allows for more sustainable preservation of the timber when compared to wood oils and paints. Furthermore, the charred finish provides the furniture with a black look, reminiscent of the black ink characters of calligraphy.
Rodan Console by PINCH
The Rodan Console is a piece of modern simplicity. The console demonstrates the same distinct curves and sturdy conical bases, this time by means of a lighter, streamlined form. Identified by signature circular foundations, the tables of the Rodan family feature the same supportive hand-turned bases, created using traditional woodwork techniques typically seen in barrel-making. 16 individual pieces of timber are meticulously measured, cut, and assembled. Although internally the sections of timber are positioned in hexadecagon formation, the final outer-facing result is hand-turned, presenting a smooth and conical appearance
