Designed for perfection Amr Abdelaziz’s design for Fondovalle in collaboration with Casamia
T
here is a certain symphony in nature, a certain connect even amongst the chaos. Dreamt and designed by Amr Abdelaziz, a celebrated designer at LW, it is this very calling of nature, raw and uninterrupted, that formed the inspiration behind his winning design for the design community competition held by Fondovalle in collaboration with Casamia. In the world of design, each tile tells a story of style, culture and heritage, com-
bining practicality with poetry. In the modern world of design, it’s easy to forget our humble beginnings, rooted in the very fabric of nature. Yet, every marble slab chiseled from rugged mountains, every stone hewn from ancient quarries, each piece of wood harvested from the depths of the woods and each concrete form cast in urban jungles tells a timeless story of our profound connection with the natural world. Amr’s “RAW” is Fondovalle’s tribute to this profound bond, a tile that honors the origin of raw materials, taking from nature and giving back through unwavering sustainability. “RAW” is more than just a tile; it’s a celebration of nature’s raw, unvarnished beauty and the concrete jungles we’ve built. The design Amr has created reflects the elemental charm of both nature and the city and promise to add to the resources that have shaped our existence. It is a testament to Fondovalle’s commitment to sustainability and a humble ode to the elemental origins, urban landscapes and geological treasures that shape our world. Unearthed elegance, nurtured by nature. Similarly, the Background collection by Fondovalle takes its calling from nature and the complexity of time. Time flows by leaving its traces through layers of materials that settle and amalgamate, stratifications of dust and natural elements shaped by atmospheric agents and a continuous flow of sea water, which smoothes and compacts surfaces. Background finds its inspiration in a limestone of calcareous origin with an almost monochrome texture. Discover the collections at Casamia Flagship Showroom.

sofa, meticulously designed by the Natuzzi Style Center to embody a fresh perspective on the amalgamation of comfort and design. In continuation of the stylistic journey initiated with The Circle of Harmony in 2020 – an exploration project delving into functionality and sustainability – Comfortness delves into the realm of comfort, derived from the ancient French word ‘confort’, meaning ‘what gives strength’. The very essence of Comfortness lies in its name, merging ‘comfort’ and ‘wellness’. It signifies more than just physical ease – it encapsulates a lifestyle, a personal and intimate approach to self-care, fostering strength and relaxation. Natuzzi Italia endeavors to harmonize comfort, design, and function, positing that living in comfort is the key to a harmonious life.

theme exudes opulence and warmth, introducing rich bronze, gold, and jewel tones to elevate hosting spaces with a touch of luxury. For those looking for a maximalist approach, the ‘Carnival Celebration’ segment bursts forth with lively colors, playful patterns, and cheerful hues inspired by the vibrant ambiance of a carnival. Meanwhile, the ‘Tropical Birds Paradise’ theme mimics the tropics and creates spaces immersed in dazzling blues, lush greens, vibrant reds, and sunny yellows. The meticulously curated themes within the ‘Happiness in Hosting’ collection cater to a range of preferences, simplifying the process of turning holiday visions into reality. eing a medical professional by education, Bangkok-based designer Taras Yoom closely works with the theme of human physiology, endowing his art objects with subconsciously familiar functions and features. According to the new legend of his Yoomoota art universe, the camel is made from elements collected by the character Pillman on the Wantland planet. Originally Pillman is a character who embodies addiction from treatment with medical drugs, pills and antibiotics. However, in a new desert edition of Pillman, this hero serves as a mysterious guardian of our health during extreme temperatures and other dangers in deserts. “Desert Pillman exists in the context of the East and the United Arab Emirates. He arrived there solely in the role of an assistant. He is a positive character who integrates into society by helping to alleviate various ailments and providing needed assistance. Desert Pillman is like a nomad on a quest who has come to lend a hand,” explains Taras Yoom. Desert Pillman appears wherever there is a need, and in the desert, there is indeed a pressing need. The camel accompanying Desert Pillman essentially serves as a ‘water tank’.

The tenth edition of the Tanween Design Programme by Tashkeel concludes with the debut of four innovative, sustainable furniture and lighting designs by early-career design professionals at Downtown Design Editions 2023: Wafa Al Falahi, Marwa Abdelra-

him, Chinara Tashmatova, Maryam Elattar & Mohamed Elnaggar. Since 2014, the Tanween Design Programme by Tashkeel has trained 36, early career, UAE-based design professionals which produced original 49 furniture and lighting designs inspired by, developed and manufactured in the UAE. Today, 23 of these limited edition pieces are offered through Tashkeel’s furniture and lighting series, The Tanween Collection. All profits from each sale of The Tanween Collection supports the development of UAE design, specifically alumni and future participants of The Tanween Design Programme,
Tashkeel’s leading training initiative for gifted UAE-based designers. Since 2020 (the seventh edition), the Tanween Design Programme has been addressing one of the fundamental challenges facing the world today; sustainability and the circular economy. This has resulted in the launch of several highly sustainable furniture and lighting designs, which are available to buy through The Tanween Collection: • Reema Al Mheiri’s Tibrah lamp made of recyclable metal and fish scales sourced from Ajman, aiming to reduce the excessive waste resulting from the human consumption of fish. • Huda Al Aithan’s Anamil light preserves the traditional safeefah (palm weaving) craft in contemporary design practice and, in doing so, helps to sustain communities of craftswomen in the UAE. • Sara Abu Farha & Khaled Shalkha Datecrete Console 0.1 is made of a new cementitious design material developed from date seeds by the designers that could serve as a local alternative to Portland cement. • Nuhayr Zein’s SEEDS series ottoman/ table features Leukeather, a new sustainable plant-based material developed by the designer from pods of the popinac tree.

elebrating the global premiere of the artist’s latest film ‘One Life Many’, the exhibition marks the first survey of Shetty’s moving image works, presenting rarely seen videos, multi-media installations and sculptures. The exhibition at Ishara features eight significant works from Shetty’s vast oeuvre, presenting his rare and deep interest in the musical and literary traditions of South Asia. In the unique form of interdisciplinarity that his practice advocates, a key motif that runs throughout the exhibition is a ‘poetics of listening’. Videos, images, objects and texts assume a fleeting presence in Shetty’s repertoire, as if they were musical notes that are at once real yet ungraspable, repetitive yet novel. The exhibition opens with an untitled sculptural installation by Shetty. Comprising of six pairs of water vessels displayed inside a glass vitrine, each object rests on its side with its mouth partly facing the viewer. Dented and worn with age, the metallic pots are accompanied by their mirror replica sculpted in wood. Arranged vertically in a single column, the installation carries an uncanny resemblance to percussive instruments, an abstract composition of progressive scales, and a duet of bodies resting silently together. Reflecting on the exhibition, Sudarshan Shetty comments: “Like in the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East has a captivating tradition of poetry and storytelling deeply entrenched in its history. The interaction between these two distant lands has fostered a cross-pollination of stories, which has resulted blending of myths, legends and folktales, creating a vibrant mosaic that resonates through both regions. Retelling is the life blood of oral traditions ensuring a sense of community and recalling wisdom that has evolved through centuries. How else can we make sense of our present?” Only Life, Myriad Places is an artistic homage to the rich and diverse traditions of music, literature and storytelling that have travelled for centuries and are presented through contemporary art. The exhibition will be accompanied by physical and virtual tours, educational and public programmes, and artist conversations over the duration of the show.
Only Life, Myriad Places: Sudarshan Shetty will be on view till 9 December 2023 at the Ishara Art Foundation, Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, UAE.

Versatility of Design The Brera Sofa System is a testament to Massaud’s ability to transcend traditional norms. With different configurations available, from the classic linear arrangement to the gracefully curved, it adapts seamlessly to diverse spaces – whether it be the snug confines of a cozy apartment or the expansive openness of a luxurious lounge area. Natural Habitat
GLOBAL OUTLOOK
The natural world meets exceptional architecture at Serenity Mansions in Tilal Al Ghaf
WORDS – SUHA SABITH
Wellbeing takes centre stage
nder the global restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us discovered a newfound appreciation for the freedom and tranquillity that time spent in nature can bring – and our desire for a closer connection with the natural elements is making its way into modern design aesthetics. Nowhere is this more evident – or beautifully executed – than in Majid Al Futtaim’s ultra-premium lifestyle destination, Serenity Mansions in Tilal Al Ghaf. Serenity Mansions was designed in collaboration with multi-award-winning architectural firms SAOTA and nabilgolam, and revered interior design firm BLINK, known for its work on the world’s most luxurious hotels. But as Hawazen Esber, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Development, commented: “Serenity Mansions is more than just a luxury neighbourhood. It represents an exceptional new era of luxury living tailored to Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals who are progressively looking for exceptional and unique experiences across every aspect of their lives.”
In ‘Ecopsychology: How Immersion in Nature Benefits Your Health’, Yale points to the growing body of research demonstrating the beneficial effects that exposure to nature has on our health. With the power to reduce stress and promote healing, it’s little wonder that policymakers, employers and even healthcare providers are incorporating our need for nature into their plans for the future. A study of 2,000 people in the UK also found that more exposure to nature translated into more community cohesion and substantially lower crime rates. Majid Al Futtaim’s own commitment to natural, sustainable living can be seen across the 500,000 square metres of parks, green open spaces and treescapes that connect Serenity Mansions to the natural world. Designed to harmoniously coexist with nature, residents can enjoy walkable neighbourhoods, interconnected by 18 kilometres of walking trails and 11 kilometres of cycling and jogging tracks. And with panoramic views of lush green landscapes and calming lakes, there’s no denying that the beauty of Serenity

Mansion’s natural landscape is fully immersive. Feeling safe in nature is a natural antidote to stress – and nowhere could be safer than the green spaces on your own doorstep. Studies show that time spent in nature can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, improve immunity, and even boost mood and self-esteem. In fact, a study from the European Centre for Environment & Human Health at the University of Exeter found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces were substantially more likely to report good health and psychological wellbeing than those who didn’t. It’s this feeling that Majid Al Futtaim was so keen to capture through urban greening in its latest luxury endeavour.
Placemaking, done right We’re far more aware of the power of nature since the pandemic hit, but we’re also more focused on our personal living spaces. With the rise of home-working, people are spending less time in offices, and more time at home. That means our surroundings are more important than ever before: something that the interna-

The structured design of Fay allows residents to close themselves off into a self-contained world, while the fragmented and explosive composition of Kai is outgoing and adventurous. tional architecture studio, SAOTA understand perfectly. “Since Covid, clients have a lower tolerance for minor inconveniences and imperfections in their homes. They’re also using their living spaces very differently. There are a lot of grand villas on the market, but in designing Serenity Mansions, our focus was to create a home which caters to every need and occasion. Offering a wide variety of experiences and spaces – from the grand to the intimate scale. We also worked closely with landscape designers to bring the outside in, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living – as well as extending the living spaces outwards to make use of the full extent of the site” Conrad Martin, Associate, SAOTA. SAOTA’s Conrad Martin also spoke of Majid Al Futtaim’s willingness to be adventurous in the architectural market. With a focus on placemaking, detailed consideration was given to Dubai’s climate – with the sun a fundamental informant to the design of Serenity Mansions. With covered and uncovered living areas, an absence of traditional boundary walls, and walkable neighbourhoods, the resort embodies a real sense of community – while reducing the reliance on cars, and encouraging residents to spend time outdoors with their neighbours, families, or by themselves. The design also speaks to different personalities: Fay and Kai contrast introversion against ex-

The luxury housing market has undergone a shift in the last five years. According to Clint Nagata, Founder and Creative Partner of BLINK, the concept that ‘more is more’ is in fact, no more. Today, people want a retreat that takes its cues from nature; a sanctuary for their wellbeing. Subtle touches that nod to luxury, rather than grandiose and ostentatious displays of wealth and status. “People have come to understand the importance of nature and their surroundings, and the need for tranquillity from their homes. So while we are designers, we draw on the organic flow of the natural world, and respect that some things are more beautiful in their God-created form.”With a design philosophy that centres on placemaking, Clint describes himself and his team at BLINK as ‘design whisperers’ – listening to the vision of the client, understanding the essence of a place, and translating that vision into something that belongs to its natural surroundings. There’s also a real focus on individuality: BLINK won’t repeat their designs anywhere else, and rarely take on residential properties – making Serenity Mansions high-demand indeed. “At BLINK, we’re able to visualise how clients will use the space. We also take the time to understand individual and cultural needs: not enough consideration is given to culture in the design world. In this region of Dubai, family is a key component of everyday life, so we designed for variations of formal living. There’s even a home cinema!” Clint stresses that good design can only come from good collaboration – and the collaboration between BLINK, SAOTA and Majid Al Futtaim has created something truly special: psychologically healthy spaces that blur the lines between interior and exterior; moving away from the concept of home as a fortress, and welcoming the world beyond the walls.

n 2019, OPSO Dubai embarked on a remarkable journey as the brand's inaugural international venture beyond the UK. Since its inception, this iconic destination has had the privilege of hosting royalty, renowned singers, and supermodels from across the globe. Recently, it underwent a sweeping interior transformation, guided by the expertise of the renowned interior design firm, Bishop Design. The studio set out to completely redefine Opso’s appearance, transforming it into a sleek and sexy day-to-night destination. They achieved this by harmoniously blending contrasting elements, marrying refinement with ruggedness and darkness with light to create a multifaceted experience. The interior incorporates design elements such as, wooden parquet, black decorative painted walls resulting in a concrete stone finish, antique brass balustrades, and metallic wooden renders, artfully manipulated by decorative paint and copper leaf to resemble rustic brick-like features, culminating in a warm, autumnal ambiance. As the journey begins, guests are welcomed by a tantalizing ‘peek-a-boo’ moment, guided by a carefully curated fiber-optic starlit corridor that beckons them into the heart of the venue. Upon crossing the threshold, a visually mesmerizing spectacle unfolds as LED lights adorn the columns and dance across the ceiling, saturating the space with vibrant energy. This dazzling display releases a cascade of colours and patterns, immediately immers-

ing guests in an experience that transcends the palate, inviting them to savour not only the exquisite dishes but also the very essence of Opso itself, as it comes to life through every facet of the environment. Situated in a prime location within Dubai Mall, Opso’s terrace treats its guests to a panoramic view overlooking the captivating dancing fountains, set against the twinkling backdrop of the iconic Burj Khalifa and authentic architecture of the Souk Al Bahr. Dylan Adams, Senior Designer for Bishop Design explained: “While OPSO, like many of the neighbouring restaurants, caters to a wide range of guests, it distinguishes itself through its diverse array of offerings. The concept revolves around three distinct sectors, OPSO Dining, OPSO Social - the Café and OPSO Privé, each meticulously crafted to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience. Whether one gravitates towards the understated charm of the cafe, craves the vibrant energy of the restaurant, or seeks the exclusive luxury of the lounge to indulge in a delightful selection of mocktails and shisha, there's an option to satisfy every preference.” In a city defined by innovation and drenched in competition, standing out is a formidable challenge. This is precisely why choosing Bishop Design for this project was an obvious decision. They demonstrate the courage to challenge conventions and the confidence to introduce fresh, groundbreaking concepts, a spirit Opso embodies.

stablished in 1983 in The Netherlands, Studio Piet Boon has evolved into a globally recognized design studio renowned for its creation of harmonious exterior, interior, and product designs. The sofa’s cushions can be covered in a different material for a contrasting effect. As a part of the ‘Pigments of Nature’ theme, the new collection is a testament to the firm’s commitment to embodying the natural hues of its surroundings in both indoor and outdoor furnishings. The designers have strategically chosen materials applicable to both environments to ensure a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces. As a result, the collection blurs the boundaries between the exterior and interior. The RAF lounge series further enhances the fluid dialogue between indoor and outdoor environments: RAF lounge series – Studio Piet Boon’s first-ever upholstered series designed for both indoor and outdoor spaces, the series features movable rounded cushions on daybeds, following the sun’s trajectory, all while resting on an architectural frame.

With a wide range of upholstery options from the Piet Boon fabric collection, these pieces offer adaptability to various spaces, ensuring continuity in design. The natural, untreated teak frame further enhances their beauty. The RAF side table is a perfect companion to the RAF seating. Its sturdy structure, executed in natural untreated teak or optional concrete, lends an earthy touch. The side table, just like the entire RAF series, is designed to age beautifully over time. t The Creativ Club, our approach to floral decor within interior design projects and events is deeply rooted in sustainability and eco-conscious practices. We believe in the beauty of nature and its enhancement of spaces, and we've made it a priority to ensure that our floral designs not only beautify interiors but also uphold environmental responsibility. We meticulously select and source flowers from local, sustainable suppliers, prioritizing those with eco-friendly cultivation methods. By partnering with environmentally conscious growers, we reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting flowers over long distances. Additionally, we opt for seasonal blooms whenever possible, minimizing the need for energy-intensive greenhouse conditions and chemical treatments. Our commitment to sustainability doesn't end with sourcing; it extends to the treatment of flowers. We use eco-friendly practices to maintain their freshness and longevity, employing natural preservatives and minimizing the use of harmful chemicals. By employing sustainable floral arrangement techniques, we aim to prolong the life of the flowers. Once our interior design projects conclude, we focus on repurposing and reusing the flowers to minimize waste. Rather than disposing of them, we explore various options for redistribution. One way is to donate the flowers to local community centers, hospitals, or retirement homes, where they continue to bring joy and beauty beyond their initial use. Another approach involves transforming the flowers into compost, which is then used to enrich soil for future projects or gardens. By embracing sustainable floral practices, The Creativ Club seeks to align creativity with environmental responsibility. We continually innovate ways to ensure that our floral designs not only elevate spaces aesthetically but also contribute positively to the environment and local communities. Through conscious sourcing, eco-friendly treatments, and thoughtful reuse, we aim to foster a greener approach to interior design.

The Retreat
Muskoka Cottage by Reigo & Bauer is a sensitive yet impactful renovation of the traditional shingle-clad cottage
S
et in the scenic landscape of Ontario’s lake country, two hour’s drive north of Toronto, the Muskoka Cottage is an almost 200-year-old dwelling built in the style typical of the region. The waterside property, once part of a sprawling resort that was gradually demolished, had been added to and updated over the decades by its current owner as a summer retreat. The request to design studio Reigo & Bauer, which had worked with the clients on two previous interior projects, was to retain and restore as much of the 6,700-square-foot building’s historic charm and original details as possible, while imbuing the spaces with character that reflects the family’s contemporary aesthetic tastes. Reigo & Bauer’s sensitive yet impactful renovation of the traditional shingle-clad cottage involved modernizing the interiors, and curating a selection of bold and playful furniture pieces that would both contrast the existing architecture and complement the clients’ impressive collection of Pop Art, Warhols et al. Approaching the former innkeeper’s lodge with soft minimalism – which has become the studio’s signature – contemporary elements were carefully inserted into the house as a layer added over the original western red cedar panels that blanket the interiors. Architectural interventions were limited to a crisp black and white palette, while colour was introduced sparingly yet dynamically through accent pieces. This is immediately apparent upon entry, where a bright white storage unit and blue cushioned bench are installed to read as a standalone element, replacing a series of boardand-batten-clad closets beside the front door. Similarly in the kitchen, the cabinetry and stainless-steel surfaces and appliances are placed to create a stark juxtaposition with, and distinct separation from, the paneling. Custom units form an L around a central island – its top extending at one end to form a breakfast bar, and its base subtly curved underneath to allow an extra seat on the adjacent side. In the bathrooms, vanities are cleverly hung like artworks in front of the cedar walls on powder-coated steel frames, which hold mirrors and marble tiles, and accommodate the plumbing. Showers are similarly outlined in black, carefully slotted into place and patterned with hexagonal tiling. Furniture throughout the home is again treated like pieces of art, imbuing each of the rooms with personality through flashes of colour, a variety of textures, and a surprising mix of scales. Huge domed pendant lights create continuity between the kitchen, dining area and hallway, while an oversized Anglepoise lamp standing in the living room warps the perspective when looking through to the kitchen. Hues from a dichroic glass vitrine beside the entrance, and a console with pixelated sides in the living room, are picked out in accent pillows, coffee table books, and other upholstered items. The cottage’s six bedrooms are treated in the same way, using colourful textiles and playful lamps to ensure none of the spaces feel too cold or serious.

A fresh lick of white paint transformed the screened back veranda into a bright and airy room that capitalizes on views out to the water. The narrow space is arranged into separate seating areas for adults and kids, which are demarcated using blue Paola Lenti outdoor rope rugs and populated with hard-wearing yet comfortable outdoor furniture. An additional area for entertaining is found on the lake itself, where custom units that hold storage, cooking apparatus, and even a TV are built into a shelter on the dock. Expertly detailed to resist water damage, particularly in the case of inevitable spring floods, each unit is constructed entirely from powder-coated aluminium, and includes cleats around its perimeter so that a cover can be quickly pulled over in anticipation of adverse weather. lthough the very idea of luxury might seem to be a modern concept developed over the last decades only, the history of luxury is as old as the history of humanity. The earliest human societies were not merely content to meet their physical needs. Many ornaments crafted thousands of years ago provide evidence of the pleasure human beings took in possessing special objects. The beauty of unique “turqueries,” the splendor of the Topkapı Palace, the magnificience of delicate decorative arts... Whoever speaks of five centuries of luxury cannot fail to feel the power of such a heritage, which makes everything bigger and grander, drawing new forms and combinations from each motif. Even in the twenty-first century, this heritage continues to inspire, enthrall and summon up dreams. And celebrating
