f you were to think through Forbes’ 2015 list of highest-paid actresses in the world, you would come up with some of the major names: Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson and Melissa McCarthy. But you might not know the actress fourth down on the list, perching above Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, and Julia Roberts: Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. Yet you might recognise her face. Refined and elegant, 33-year-old Fan has appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past. She has worked with Cartier and posed, lashes fluttering, in a L’Oreal Paris advert. A muse to the fashion powerhouses, she has been seen at Versace and Armani, Dior and Valentino. She even closed the Stéphane Rolland Couture 2012 show in Paris, walking down the runway in a custom-designed, form-fitting white dress. As an actor, producer, singer, and all-around performer, Fan is the only non-American on Forbes’ 10 Highest Paid Actresses list. She’s also almost ubiquitous throughout China. Her pale skin, large eyes, delicate figure and long raven hair appears on billboards and as a cast for Barbie Dolls, selling everything from makeup products to sportswear. Born to a military family in Qingdao, Fan began performing at a young age. “I got interested in acting when I was 11 or 12, and saw a TV series based on the empress of China [Wu Zetian],” Fan told the South
four questions with fan Bingbing What do you think of hollyWood’s leading men?
There are many whom I would love to act opposite. like Brad Pitt?
China Morning Post. “I found her character fascinating and promised myself one day I’d incarnate her.” By 1997, aged only 16, Fan secured her path to fame with a role in TV series My Fair Princess.
He is very er… (laughing) amazing in every way. But so is his wife Angelina. I think it would also be amazing to act alongside her. you’ve Worked With french Brands. do you think the
Her career has only skyrocketed from there, with Fan starring in around 90 soap operas and films across, including the highest-grossing film in China in 2003. “My success can be summarised with a Chinese saying that is very international: ‘Being in the right place at the right time to do the right thing,’” she told SCMP. Today Fan works in cinema around the world. “It seems that every other week I am flying off somewhere, but this is my choice and I love what I do. I think this is such an exciting time for China to showcase our own great acting and directing talent.” In a way, Fan acknowledges, she has become more than a movie star; she’s become a spokesperson for China. “This is a consequence of being maybe the first generation of actors to travel to the West a lot, and talk about our work, our love of cinema. I hope I can introduce many people to the culture of China. It is truly so diverse and so remarkable.” “Every generation has an actor who served as an ambassador to the world. It’s an honour for me to be granted that role,” adds Fan to the SCMP. “China is growing and gaining power, and I’m glad that the world is paying more and more attention to us.”
french are very chic?
Absolutely. When I walk around somewhere like Cannes in the South of France, I’m amazed at just how many elegantly dressed women there are. Even when they dress down they just have this fantastic way of putting together an outfit. They also look so stylish in their sunglasses. I’m a big fan of sunglasses. do you think you Would ever live in the south of france?
It is certainly one of the most amazing places that I have ever visited. I love boats too and there are so many enormous boats there. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen quite so many. I love going to cocktail parties on boats, although I’m not really someone who drinks all that much.

opera’s it girl Celebrity opera star Danielle de Niese talks about loving to sing and singing for love
34
>>travel<<
Opera star Danielle de Niese (Dani to her friends) is known for her captivating voice and powerful stage presence. Born in Australia and raised in Los Angeles, de Niese made her singing debut in New York’s Metropolitan Opera’s production of The Marriage of Figaro. Now 36, the striking soprano has performed on stages around the world. She’s stood before audiences from New York to Covent Garden, performed with LL Cool J, sung in Ridley Scott’s Hannibal, and won an Emmy Award as a TV host at age 16. De Niese has even been the subject of BBC4’s Diva Diaries in a documentary trailing her work with the Metropolitan. It wasn’t until 2005 that de Niese met Gus Christie, manager of the famous Glyndebourne Opera Festival. That year, filling in for an ill lead, the darkhaired performer stunned crowds with her performance of Cleopatra. The rest is history. Marriage happened in 2009, and just recently the couple had their first child, a boy named Bacchus. Love, de Niese acknowledges, has changed her world: “I think when you fall in love, you fall in love and everything is in order in the universe. You can’t choose who that person is, that one person who you want to be the last person you see at night and the first person you see in the morning. But it’s a wonderful thing when it happens.”
The interview Why opera?
I want people to see that opera is just like any other kind of music. Music has the power to move people. You just need to have an open heart to do that. Opera is about relationships with people, between people. It could be sexy, glamorous, tragic, melodramatic… There’s a lot of emotional impact. you decided to go back to performing after having your son. hoW has it been?
I returned to work three weeks and three days after the birth of my first son, Bacchus. It was certainly a major decision, and not one I took lightly. But there were a few factors that entered in. The particular performance was a long time in the making and something I had been looking forward to for quite a few years. I couldn’t bear to give it up, as it was the first time I would collaborate with conductor Robin Ticciati. I also had a chance to reunite with one of my favourite directors in the world, Laurent Pelly, to star in two one-act operas. One role would be a femme fatale, and the other role a little boy. The dramatic challenge of attempting both lead roles in different genders in the same evening was just too exciting to shy away from. Also, this first engagement post-birth would take place at Glyndebourne festival, which is also my home. It would be a 10-second commute between the house and the opera. My baby was able to stay in the comfort of our home (that is, when he wasn’t with my husband watching me on stage in the theatre!). What inspires you to perform?
Singing is the most organic and natural way for me to express myself as a performer. I have also studied dance and done television, but singing is the strongest part of my identity. For me the key element is an audience. Performing, interpreting, sharing a story, using the human voice and emotion to transport people into a different state, this is at the heart and soul of why I love what I do.
35
Danielle de Niese getting ready at Jumeirah Carlton Tower
One of the things that surprised me about Glyndebourne is it’s the most amazing English love story. A man falls in love with a soprano while he’s putting on opera with his friends for fun and he marries her. He builds an opera house in the backyard so that she can sing at the opera house and doesn’t have to travel around the world.
tiny detail had been carefully thought-through in every facet of the hotel. A thought would barely enter my mind when my eyes would fall on the very thing I was thinking of, present and perfectly placed. It was as if there was a ‘genie in a bottle’ that cared for my comfort. Staying in the Royal Suite was like coming to a residence in London. The hotel doesn’t feel like a hotel; it feels like a home away from home.
now the story of you and your husband has become part of
where Is your favourIte place to travel?
Glyndebourne’s own. dId you expect thIs?
I love Paris, Amsterdam, Tuscany, Barcelona, Los Angeles, and basically anywhere in California. I’m a California girl at heart! I do love so many different places. My husband jokes that I am always landing somewhere and sighing that it feels like coming home… so I guess the world is my home, in a way.
Is It true that Glyndebourne has Its own love story?
It’s very sweet that, completely accidentally, history has repeated itself. It’s hard to know what either of us would have ‘expected’ in terms of a life-partner. I think when you fall in love, you fall in love and everything is in order in the universe. You can’t choose who that person is, that one person who you want to be the last person you see at night and the first person you see in the morning. But it’s a wonderful thing when it happens. how Is It workInG wIth the InternatIonal rescue commIttee?
what’s been the bIGGest surprIse of your career?
I think the continual evolution of my voice. I started so young and have grown up in the public eye (and ear) so it has been astounding to see how my voice is still taking shape.
(see sIdebar)
I’m honoured to be able to use my voice to help raise awareness and support for some of the world’s most vulnerable, both of the challenges they face and their incredible resilience. If you could travel anywhere In the world, where would you lIke to Go?
At the moment, given the current world premiere I’m starring in (the opera Bel Canto, based on Ann Patchett’s novel), I think I would love to go to South America and see every treasure. I would also love to go to Abu Dhabi, which has been beautifully shot in recent films!

During the photoshoot, the cast laugh. They joke. Then, when one performs, they fall silent, watching and waiting. Come evening, any of the five performers might be on Pacha Ibiza Dubai’s stage. The company boasts dozens of different acts on a regularly shifting schedule. Its nightlife is a highlight. Its food, featuring a recently renovated Asian Mediterranean menu, also attracts. On Thursdays and Fridays, the venue is packed. There is theatre to watch and rooftops to enjoy. Guests linger late into the night. But while we shoot, Pacha is silent, closed to the public. Off to one side, a cast member orders lunch: salad, something healthy, something from the venue’s kitchen. Another jokes about wanting a burger. He’s going on stage soon though, and so grinning, he defers. For the final set of photos, four of the performers take the stage. They laugh again, playing, performing, at once exquisitely artistic and mischievous. The camera clicks and then we’re done. But they’re not; as we depart, the cast lingers behind, discussing the line-up for that evening. The acrobat stretches. The en-pointe dancer shrugs into a jumper. As the afternoon fades into night, the show goes on. BulGaRi:
timeless luxury The name Bulgari is synonymous with luxury. Established in Rome in 1884 by jeweller Sotirios Voulgaris (who had emigrated from Greece), Bulgari’s flagship store on Via dei Condotti in Rome has been satisfying Romans’ thirst for exquisite ornaments since 1905. Bulgari has since established itself as one of the foremost luxury brands in the world, with boutiques in most major cities stocking its iconic necklaces, bracelets, rings and watches, including a sizeable boutique in the Dubai Mall. Jumeirah spoke to Guido Terreni, Managing Director – Bulgari Watches, about the process of creating design masterpieces the connection between bulgari’s designs and rome’s history
have you spotted any current trends in the luxury
is very strong, isn’t it?
market?
There are many examples [of this], some that are immediately understandable and others that are subtle. For instance the Coliseum: everyone knows the shape of the Coliseum, the three layers of windows – that inspired the Bulgari Bzero-1. Imagine Rome 2,000 years ago. It didn’t have tall buildings; it had this monument that was for having fun, it was for games – it was for cruel games [laughs] – but it was also an expression of power. You have an inspiration that is an expression of majesty.
On the men’s side there is a request for thinner watches. [We have] the Octo Finissimo. It’s an ultra-thin watch for men, in platinum. As has occurred in the past, formal watches continue to be very understated designs that are very traditional. They are like watches that were worn in the 1950s. At that time brands didn’t even have a unique case. There were generic case makers that sold the same case to different brands; the dial was different and the movement were different, [but the cases were identical]. That’s what you still see today with many brands.
the rulers of ancient rome certainly appreciated luxury.
Not many people know that the word luxury was born in Latin; it didn’t exist before. Lux means luxury, and in Greek it didn’t exist. Why? Greeks were hedonists, of course, and they were looking at the object of beauty, but that object of beauty was not an element of segmentation. In [Ancient] Rome you see evidence that luxury put distance between social strata, that it was an expression of exclusivity but also of power, again, and of personality. When you are in the luxury business you are addressing people who are at the higher level of society, usually people who make their own decisions, who rule, who have a strong personality. the link to ancient rome is very obvious in some pieces. for example, you use roman coins adorned with the emperor’s image in the monete collection. is that another expression of power?
Overall, you have an emperor who is ruling, [who] puts his own name on the coins for trading. That is an expression of ‘that’s my rule in time’. The [Bulgari] family did the same; they put their family name in Rome on a timepiece, and that was done 40 years ago when logos were just on the packaging of a product that you bought. The father [Sotirios Voulgaris] of the brothers [Constantino and Giorgio Bulgari] did the same on the boutique. If you go to Rome you have this huge Bulgari logo across the five windows. That has existed since 1930. There you have the courage, the boldness of the family. That’s part of Roman culture. That’s why Andy Warhol said that he came to Rome every year to visit Bulgari – because it was an expression of contemporary art.
but that’s not bulgari’s style, is it?
We would never do a thin movement [like the Octo’s] and put it in such a case, because I wouldn’t like to wear my grandfather’s watch. I don’t wear his clothes, I don’t drive his car, why should I wear his watch? That’s the difficult thing about watch making; it is very conservative, and you have men who are afraid of moving on to a different style. You buy a watch [perhaps] every ten years of your life, if you are a normal person, and not always from the same brand. It’s not like people are always looking for the next watch [they are going to buy]. So you have to buy something that is safe, and safe means long-lasting. For me is a long-lasting item, but it has some edges that other watches don’t have, and that can mean some people refrain from purchasing it. But either you love it or you hate it, and I prefer it to be loved or hated rather than just average. what is bulgari’s most popular creation at the moment?
In terms of sales, Serpenti is the number one Bulgari line, for sure. Serpenti is an expression of seduction first of all, of power, strength, of daring to do something different. Then it would be the Octo. how would you define bulgari?
We are Romans in everything we do. Everything is done in an extrodinarily refined way. That’s why [our pieces have] a contemporary longlasting design, because that design is not just decorative, it is functional. They’re something you could wear for a long time.

Stylist to the stars Lorenzo Martin talks about what’s hot in hair

Hair is the ultimate accessory. You wear it every day. It’s always with you. And if done correctly, it has the potential to make you feel like a million bucks.
“Interestingly, I have never seen so much hair as I’ve seen in Dubai,” he explained. “We have gone through so much colour.
It also has the power to compel. One study (admittedly by the biased team behind Pantene) noted that 74 percent of men noticed women because of their hair. Some 44 percent of men surveyed said hair is the first thing they notice about a woman.
“But in terms of trends, right now, it’s all about looking natural and carefree. Things aren’t so heavily styled. In Los Angeles, people want their hair to seem effortless, and to grow in nicely. A lot of people were doing ombré for a long time. But now it’s much more relaxed.”
Like great fashion, the trend for ‘what’s in’ with hair has changed over time. In the 1920s, Louise Brook’s a-line bob (think clean-cut bangs, and abovethe-jaw layers) was the rage. The 40s and 50s embraced Rita Hayworth’s Hollywood glamour waves, while the 60s channelled Twiggy’s boldly short pixie cut. Farrah Fawcett brought the feathered waves in the 1970s. And who could forget ‘The Rachel’, Jennifer Aniston’s iconic many-layered cut from the 1990s?
Today’s Tresses To understand what’s in this season, we met with celebrity stylist Lorenzo Martin at the luxury beauty lounge, Jose Eber Laloge. A stylist for Jennifer Lopez for over 15 years, Martin has worked with celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sophia Bush, Anastasia, and Heather Locklear. On the day of our chat, he had only just flown to Dubai from his home of Los Angeles. Amidst chandeliers, Fendi chairs, and the delicate wafting of Chanel hair perfume, working across several eager clients at once, Martin shared snippets of what’s new and hot in the world of hair.
Cuts are becoming shorter, he noted. “People are dropping the weight of heavy hair. It seems lighter. A lot of my clients are ditching hair extensions and going for more of a natural look. A layered bob is very in. Pastels, which were big earlier last year, are still around but aren’t as big.” When it comes to tips, Martin didn’t hesitate: “Don’t dye your hair black. It’s so hard to change once it happens. And when you visit a salon, take a picture of something you love, and also something you don’t want, so the stylist has a base.” Several hours and numerous contented clients later (one even returned to take a photo with Martin, so pleased with her transformation from black to caramel blond), the celebrity stylist had a few more words of advice. “Do a nice conditioning treatment regularly, like hot oil, or anything to put moisture back in your hair. Your hair is like fabric. If you’re good to it, it will look good every day.”
The Salon José eber Laloge, a recently opened salon located in dubai, is known for bringing over the hairstylists to Hollywood stars. Lorenzo Martin was only one in a recent string of famous names. The salon itself emphasises luxury with a twist of Middle eastern glamour, channelling elements of French theatres. The Beverly Hills vibe is evident in a collaboration with Californian stylist José eber. as for the treatments? They are exclusive and deliberately luxurious, perfect for the salon’s gold-gilded, chandelier-lined interiors. Laloge.com

The Chinese New Year is one of those celebrations steeped in tradition yet shaped with modernity. Today often called the Spring Festival, CNY draws together loved ones during (as the name suggests) spring. Local Chinese journalist Sage Miranda explores some of the nuances of the holiday’s history, considering everything from the colour red to the importance of cleanliness

What you need to knoW History
Originating during the Shang Dynasty between 17th and 11th century BC, the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday centres on people spending time with families and loved ones. Traditionally, during CNY entire households stopped other business. Instead, families focused on cleaning homes to rid them of ‘inauspicious breaths’ that might have amassed during the old year. Elders gave money to children, while ritual sacrifices of paper and food were offered to gods and ancestors. On New Year’s Eve, the entire family would join together for the most important part of the celebration: feasting. In 1912, when China adopted the Western calendar, the Chinese joined in the celebration of January 1st as New Year’s Day. Yet China continues to embrace the CNY, only in a slightly shorter version. The name also changed, altering to the Spring Festival. Fireworks
Firecrackers in mainland China are generally set off at midnight, while firework displays in Hong Kong are set off on the second day to mark the beginning of the week-long celebration. In some provinces, firecrackers are set off again on the fourth day, known as the welcoming of the fortune gods, to ensure an abundant wealth in the coming year. wrapped in red
Chinese New Year is full of traditions and customs based on ancient legends. A popular one is for the elderly and married couples to give out a single note in red envelopes, or hongbao, to their children and single friends as a means to send their blessings and wishes. Temple visits in the early hours of the New Year are one of the solemn duties to bring luck for the year ahead. Cleaning
In the preceding days, cleaning every corner of the house is believed to drive bad luck away. Moreover, the character fu, meaning good fortune or happiness, in visually enticing red paper-cuts or Chinese knots are displayed to express good wishes and yearning for the future. Flowers
Flowers are also a sight for sore eyes. It signifies life, fortune and the advent of spring, and it also symbolises harmony. In Hong Kong, the Flower Market Road in Mongkok gets crowded in the Eve with elders buying them. The plum blossoms and white narcissus are two most popular types that symbolise prosperity.

tHree to trY nian Gao (riCe Cake)
With a tradition of Spring Festival consumption dating back some 3,000 years, eating rice cakes is meant to bring you prosperity. It also celebrates the approaching rice harvest in the spring. While there are various production methods, nian gao in broadly made of glutinous rice ingredient that is pounded into a paste. This can be simply molded, or cooked again to firm the shape. It can be served savoury or sweet. yu (fish)
Another dish meant to bring prosperity, fish is a regular part of dining at the Chinese New Year table. Indeed, the character for prosperity, yu is a homophone for the word for fish, yu. It’s common for the fish to be served whole, as this symbolises unity; and for part of the fish to be left over for the following day, as this suggests prosperity will continue and overflow. tanG yuan or yuanxiao (sWeet riCe ball)
On the 15th day of celebration, it’s tradition to eat sweet rice balls. Depending on where one is located, the dish varies. In northern China, the rice balls (yuanxiao) are rolled in flour, symbolising a circle of harmony within the family. In southern China, the stuffing is put into the balls (tang yuan) only once the dough is made. Fillings are rich and decadent, including red bean paste (reminiscent of Oreos) or peanuts.
A feAst of food As in many cultures, food plays a large role in Chinese New Year. Kenmin foo, executive Chinese Chef at Zheng He’s, explains why What’s unique about Chinese food?
Chinese cuisine is an important part of Chinese culture. To put it simply, delicious and nutritious food is a basic necessity of life. Their food is famous for colour, aroma, taste, significance, and the look. What’s one dish everyone should try?
Yusheng/Lo Hei. Known as prosperity toss, this is a raw fish salad mixed with vegetables and condiments. It signifies abundance, prosperity and vigor. What role does food play in Chinese neW year?
The New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. It’s the family reunion dinner, especially for those with family members away from home. Customarily, fish will be served, as well as dumplings, which is the most important dish in Northern China. Together, these two dishes mean prosperous. Other dishes are served depending on personal preference. The majority of the Chinese will gather together to eat. What’s your personal favourite dish?
Lo Hei and Nian Gao (sticky rice cake). Zheng He’s will be offering a set menu for Chinese New Year, Dhs350 per person, 7 to 25 February, book at 04 432 3232, restaurants@jumeirah.com

Feasting at Zheng he’s, Dubai, uae The idea
Teasing with the story of a great nautical explorer and diplomat of the Ming Dynasty, Zheng He’s presents food from across China with a neo-oriental flair. The food
Dishes are varied, rich, and distinctively Chinese. A starter of Chinese soft-shell crab fried gently before being covered in sour plum and lime sauce combines meaty and crunch textures, while golden king prawns with Chinese mustard and spicy mango impress by their sheer size alone. While the Dim Sum selection is extensive, black cod dumplings served alongside ginger and garlic are at once doughy, rich, and filled with flaky meat. For a main, the restaurant’s signature roasted Beijing Duck, carved tableside by a trained ‘duck master’, shouldn’t be missed. The gently cooked meat is served alongside chilled cucumbers and thin pancakes, creating a complex combination of textures and flavours. Or for diners who prefer something lighter, the sautéed diver scallops with asparagus and lily bulbs mixes chili and a hint of butter while allowing the dish’s natural taste to shine through. A word of advice: portions are by no means small, so come hungry.

The desserT
Sweet treats are split into two sections: traditional and modern. The deep fried mango cheesecake, placed alongside vanilla ice cream, presents a delightfully delicate flavour; while the hot chocolate fondant, with warm chocolate sat inside a gooey crust, mixes richly with the accompanying red bean ice cream The aTmosphere
Oriental, modern, and beautifully chic, Zheng He’s is decorated in glossy blacks and vibrant reds. The best table of the house is outside. Ask for one perched on a private peninsula looking across the waters of Madinat Jumeirah and towards the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. While you eat, quiet abras will float past. Celebrate in Shanghai, China If you’re visiting China during February, book a room at Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel in Shanghai. This bustling city is where Eastern tradition and modern influences collide, presenting the best of art, culture, nightlife, and of course food. Within the hotel itself, you can enjoy five bars and restaurants offering a wealth of diversity. For instance, for breakfast you can sample a traditional feast from the extensive buffet. A savoury noodle soup, garnished with fresh soy sauce, mini shrimps, and tofu slivers is one option. Another tasty choice is the sometimes sweet, sometimes savoury, but always delicious Xiao Long Bao. A steamed bun popular throughout Shanghai, this delight is best served warm, great to cradle between gloved hands while warding off the early-morning chill. For breakfast, opt for a bun filled with sesame paste. The flavour is reminiscent of Oreos. If something heartier appeals to you for dinner, you can visit the Art Café and Lounge, where dishes like sweet-and-savoury eel in a rich sauce are presented alongside fresh fish and meats. If you want a more traditional offering, you can enjoy the authentic taste of Shanghai at Shang-High. Of course, food isn’t all the venue offers. You can also enjoy an urban spa, a beautiful gym with a separate bamboo-floored room for yoga, spacious rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a fantastic location beside the Shanghai New International Expo. A short walk away is Central Park, while the Huamu Road subway station is on the corner. Within Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel itself, you can also enjoy extensive art. The hotel’s 16-metrehigh lobby tells a 5,000-year-old story, featuring characters from the ‘Thousand Character’ essay. jumeirah.com

Detox programmes
The property enjoys a lovely setting on the beach and it is extremely well equipped to provide you with some much needed R&R. You’ll be well looked after if you opt for one of the tailored detox programmes, which can be mixed and matched depending on your requirements. There’s a dedicated team on hand to guide you, including professional spa therapists, fitness experts and there’s even a nutritionist. The three-day detox programme option may sound overwhelming, but don’t panic – this isn’t about eating less. You’ll be able to eat three meals a day plus snacks and it actually includes a healthy number of calories (roughly 1,800 per day). The aim of the game is to give your system a break. The secret? To focus on whole foods, so there’s no limit on the amount of veggies and seeds you can eat. You’ll consume only foods thought to be ‘non-reactive’ such as blueberries, flaxseed and chicken, avoiding those foods that are said to trigger inflammatory responses, leading to gastrointestinal distress, headaches, fatigue and weight gain. The ‘get slim’ package is a personalised weight-loss programme ideal for anyone looking to kick-start weight loss. And there’s no risk of undoing all your hard work in the gym as the programme incorporates a delicious and healthy menu. Highlights include the super detox green juice made from celery, cucumber, kale leaves, spinach, fresh parsley, lemon and apple. Lunch options might include carrot-ginger soup with chia seeds accompanied by steamed broccoli, drizzled with lemon juice and a mixed green salad. As far as exercise goes, there are two packages. You could try sunrise yoga and reflexology, but if it’s a jolly good work out you’re after then the resort’s personal trainers can put you through your paces. Afterwards, you can recuperate in the spa. Perhaps an Affusion Shower Massage may take your fancy (which can help to remove toxins) or a traditional Thai massage that can reduce tension and establish feelings of wellbeing. The exercise and spa programmes can be tailored to your requirements and incorporate trips to the steam room, which can help increase your metabolism and aid weight loss. If you’re serious about sticking to that New Year’s resolution, then the ‘get fit’ package will have you well on your way to a healthy new you. Perfect for anyone looking to get into better shape, this package incorporates delicious, healthy cuisine alongside a more energetic, tailored sports programme. Sample activities include a cardio training routine, interval training, weight training, circuits, strength training, and conditioning sessions. The very popular (and slightly painful) Tabata training is also offered, consisting of a four-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session, conducted in eight rounds
74
of specific 20-seconds-on, 10-seconds-off interval. Be warned: this is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
talise spa
After day one of detox, you’ll have earned some time in the Talise Spa and this award-winning facility will not disappoint. As soon as you enter, the low lighting and aroma of essential oils will instantly help you slow down and unwind. I personally recommend a visit to the Himalayan Salt Room, one of the spa’s top features. Compressed for over 250 million years, the salt has natural healing properties and is known in the Himalayas as ‘white gold.’ The room’s inviting amber glow creates a calming ambiance as you gently sink into the heated water-bed. Once the salt-infused air is inhaled, it is said to travel through the body, absorb moisture, remove toxins and help to heal many common ailments. It is even said to strengthen the immune system. The salt contains the same natural elements found in the human body and can therefore help rebalance the body’s minerals. This room is the first of its kind in the Middle East and is popular among those keen to benefit from one of the most useful natural salts on earth. If you’re after some inspiration, the spa offers an impressive selection of treatments and hydrotherapy baths. The 195-minute Detox Ritual is an intense detox experience that combines an affusion shower, a Dead Sea mud wrap and lymphatic drainage. A special detox drink is also provided. There’s also the Diamond Multisensorial Lifting treatment said to regenerate and energize the skin, or the Chakra Balancing Therapy which promotes peaceful well-being and balance. If you’re feeling brave, there’s even a snow room that is said to aid circulation and leave you with an instant glow. For a more leisurely start to the day try pilates or reiki. Budding yogis will be content with the numerous yoga classes held throughout the week in various different styles, such as sunrise, hatha and aqua. After a weekend at this resort, you’ll return home having discovered your inner zen – and, if all has gone to plan, perhaps a slightly more toned physique for 2016.
