his is our fifth year as a proud supporter of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, and we’re glad you’ve joined us to kick off 2015 with some world-class tennis. This year’s tournament promises to thrill, with six of the world’s top players here to compete in Abu Dhabi. At Mubadala, what excites us most about the tournament is the tremendous impact it has had on the wider community. Living a healthy and active lifestyle is a key component of preparing UAE youth to participate in the country’s future, and our youth engagement strategy focuses on initiatives that help inspire them in this journey. The tournament has also given rise to the Mubadala Tennis in Schools programme, which gives students across the UAE access to equipment and coaching to start enjoying this great sport. I am proud to say that this programme has introduced more than 40,000 students to tennis over the past four years. And what could be more exciting than going head to head with one of the star players from the Championship? Through the Mubadala Community Cup, tennis fans of

all ages have a chance to do just that. Players across the emirate play against each other in the spirit of healthy competition to win the chance to play in a clinic with a pro from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. These programmes have harnessed and extended the excitement that the Mubadala World Tennis Championship brings to Abu Dhabi by extending its reach and encouraging the next generation to get active and engaged in sports. he emirate of Abu Dhabi is yet again poised to deliver a fantastic year of sporting and cultural events in 2015. An action-packed 12 months are planned to entertain and enthral visitors and residents alike. The award-winning Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship celebrates its 10th anniversary with a superb line-up of entertainment, both on and off-the-course, as it returns to the Abu Dhabi Golf Club from January 15th to 18th. The Championship is a jewel in the desert, with the highest profile players, that forms part of the European Tour’s ‘Gulf Swing’ and is seen by a global TV audience of 400 million. But it’s not all about sport, there’s also a rich mixture of cultural and musical events, exhibitions and festivals taking place throughout the year. The inaugural Abu Dhabi Food Festival will be held emirate-wide from February 5th to February 21st, which has developed and built on the success of the annual Gourmet Abu Dhabi, held since 2009. The festival, served up by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), is supported by the emirate’s leading hotels, restaurants, malls and main attractions. Building on the success of the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon, which took place in the capital from 2010

to 2014, the brand-new ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi is set to be even bigger and better this March 6th and 7th with a variety of course options to suit a range of abilities. With a ground-breaking series of concerts, performances and exhibitions, the Abu Dhabi Festival – the county’s leading celebration of arts and culture - returns from March 2nd to April 2nd with award-winning Brazilian music legend Sérgio Mendes, worldrenowned conductor Riccardo Muti and internationally-acclaimed violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter performing at the 12th edition of the festival among a host of other musicians and orchestras. The summer months are also event-filled – from heritage events such as June’s Liwa Date Festival, to the Al Gharbai Watersports Festival to the action-packed Abu Dhabi Summer Season running from June 11 to September 5. November’s F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – a sporting spectacle which guarantees the eyes of the world are focused on the city for a whole weekend. Yasalam is the largest citywide free entertainment programme by any race host city, blending motorsport with a multitude of music, film and community events during F1. The

programme of activities and events has attracted over a million attendees and seen more than 150 performing artists, including 20 multi-award winning international and regional superstars. Abu Dhabi Science Festival will host even more exciting scientific experiences building on the success of the previous four editions. Visitors can look forward to an array of new workshops, shows and interactive exhibits. Alongside returning blockbusters such as Dig-up-a-Dinosaur, OR Surgery and CSI Crime Scene Investigation workshops, ADSF will showcase new science experiences in health, cleantech, astronomy and mathematics. Abu Dhabi Art returns for its seventh edition, also in November, showcasing some of the leading modern and contemporary art galleries from around the world while the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup also sets sail for five days of competition in and around Lulu Island off Abu Dhabi’s Corniche. ntering this year’s tournament ranked World No. 1 in the Emirates ATP World Rankings, three-time Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC) winner Novak Djokovic will return to Abu Dhabi this January to defend his Championship title and kick-start the 2015 tennis season. Novak Djokovic started his 2014 season falling to eventual Australian Open winner – and fellow MWTC player - Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. In March, Djokovic won his third Indian Wells title, also taking home his first trophy in the 2014 season. Djokovic followed up Indian Wells with another

crown in the Miami Open later the same month. May saw Novak withdraw from the Mutua Madrid Open after suffering a recurring right arm injury that gave him pain whilst playing in MonteCarlo. He returned to tennis at the end of the month to defeat Rafael Nadal in Rome, winning his 19th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy and winning five of the past seven titles at the 1000 tournament level. Djokovic won his seventh Grand Slam championship and second Wimbledon crown this spring beating Roger Federer in four sets in the 2014 Wimbledon Final. On July 7th, Novak reclaimed the World No. 1 ranking

ahead of Nadal. Later at the 2014 US Open, Djokovic fell to Kei Nishikori of Japan in the semifinals. On 2 November, he became the fifth active player (23rd in Open Era) to record 600 match wins as he captured his 20th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. Novak finished the year at World No. 1 after taking home the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals trophy for the third consecutive year. However, he never got to play the final as his opponent, Roger Federer, withdrew to injury just ahead of the match. also became the first player in tennis history to win at least one Grand Slam title for 10 straight years, giving him a total of 14 Grand Slam titles. Nadal’s 2014 season came to a premature end after contracting appendicitis and withdrawing for surgery in November. His appearance at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship will mark the Spaniard’s first match since he played in Basel, his last tournament of the year, as he looks to kick-start his 2015 season. Murray’s year kicked off at the Qatar Open in Doha, where he played his first ATP tournament since having back surgery in September 2013. He then battled the heat and opponents at the 2014 Australia Open, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Rodger Federer in their fifth meeting at a Grand Slam. Murray played through the quarter finals at both the Canadian Open

and the Cincinnati Masters following Wimbledon. After a defeat at the US Open to Djokovic in the quarterfinal, Andy Murray picked up his first title at the 2014 Shenzhen Open held in the end of September, defeating Tommy Robredo in 5-7, 7-6(9), 6-1. He’s since added two more titles to his belt and became the fifth active player to lift 30 trophies with his victory in the Vienna final in late October. After a strong finish to the season, Murray qualified for the ATP World Tour finals in London where he won two matches before going out to eventual finalist, Roger Federer. For the fifth year in a row, Lopez competed in the US Open and for the fifth time would be eliminated in the 3rd Round losing out to Dominic Thiem. His great form in the ATP World Tour Masters continued with a two sets victory over World Number 2 and fellow countryman Rafael Nadal in Shanghai. Almagro’s year began in good form as he reached the Semi-Finals of the Vina del Mar losing out to Fabio Fognini in three sets. He then made his ninth appearance at the ATP in Buenos Aires. The Spaniard couldn’t repeat his 2011 heroics however and

On May 27 Almagro had to retire in the First Round at Roland Garros with a foot injury when up against American Jack Sock. ubadala Tennis in Schools (MTiS) and award winning Best Community Initiative for the 2014 Sports Industry Awards is an inspirational grassroots community initiative championed by Mubadala in order to grow the game of tennis in the UAE. It gives pupils aged 7-10 from across 20 local schools the chance to take their first steps in the sport by introducing them to mini-tennis. The programme provides pupils and their Physical Education (PE) teachers with the equipment and skills they need to nurture a life-long passion for the game from an early age and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. Thanks to the success of the programme, this year MTiS has been extended to run throughout the full school year. 20 schools from across Abu Dhabi and Dubai were given Wilson mini-tennis kits and were visited twice monthly between October – December 2014 by top UAE tennis coaches who gave mini-tennis coaching sessions as well as advice on living an active and healthy lifestyle. Through the free mini-tennis equipment and lesson manuals provided, PE teachers are able to teach their pupils minitennis throughout the school term and integrate into their curriculum. During the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, two lucky students from each school have been selected to demonstrate their minitennis skills on centre court on day 1 of the tournament. These talented students will continue to develop their skills with sessions hosted at the International Tennis Centre at Zayed

Sports City twice monthly until May 2015, culminating in an ‘End of Season Championship’ where the youngsters will experience their first test in competitive tennis. The MTiS programme is run in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi Education Council. The extension of this programme has been developed to ensure tennis is an all-year-round sport which is readily available and accessible to young people.

rewind 2014 SEASON Tennis enthusiasts around the globe have certainly had their fair share of entertainment throughout the 2014 tennis season – a season that has seen some fabulous surprises and upsets that have given us as tennis fans, some amazing entertainment! Here’s a look at some of our favourite moments... STAn wAwrinKA wins his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open Stan took the Australian Open title in a four set victory against Spaniard Rafael Nadal becoming the second Swiss man to win a Grand Slam singles title. rAFAeL nAdAL captures his ninth French Open title Rafa captured his ninth Roland Garros title in the past ten years with a four-set final win over Novak Djokovic making it his fifth straight win at the French Open. Nadal equaled Pete Sampras’ total of 14 Grand Slam wins, the second highest number of single Grand Slam titles after Roger Federer. AndY MUrrAY won 3 titles in 5 weeks Murray shone in the latter part of the 2014 tennis season; he won 3 titles in an astonishing 5 weeks in Shenzhen, Vienna and Valencia. Murray picked up his first title of the season at the Shenzhen Open, after having been a set down and saving 5 match points, Murray came back and beat Tommy Robredo in a 3 set victory. In an attempt to qualify for the World Tour Finals, Murray triumphed at the Vienna Open in another 3 set victory but this time over David Ferrer to take his second title for the season and 30th of his career. The Battle for the TOP SPOT If Nadal and Djokovic both make it through their respective matches, sports fans in Abu Dhabi could be treated to a battle of epic proportions as the two titans of tennis potentially face each other in the final on Day Three. One of the greatest rivalries in tennis history, Djokovic and Nadal have faced off against each other a colossal 42 times, the most headto-head meetings of any pair in the Open Era. With their match-ups usually reserved for Grand Slams and finals, the last time they met was at the French Open final where the ‘King of Clay’, Nadal, came away victorious and leading their overall head-to-head 23 matches to Djokovic’s 19. Come January 3rd, the stakes will be high. Should the duo come to blows, pride, as well as the first trophy of 2015, will surely be at stake. Geneva to HOST 250 event from 2015 The Tennis Club de Genève at the Parc des Eaux-Vives, the oldest and largest club in Switzerland is over the moon that the ATP has granted them the right to host an ATP World Tour 250 tournament from 2015. The Geneva Open will take place from 16 – 23 May in 2015, returning to the Swiss city for the first time since 1991. THE GENERATION GAME With Nadal, Djokovic and Wawrinka taking home three out of the four Grand Slams and seven of the nine Masters 1000 events in 2014, the rest of the ATP Tour were left to take what they could and pick up the scraps. Kyrgios hit a careerhigh 37 aces during the match, the most Nadal has ever faced in a match in his career. Kyrgios finished the season at world number 52 however keep a close eye on this one; he’s coming through the ranks and fast! 23 year old, Grigor Dimitrov made a splash at the Australian Open, reaching his first quarterfinal at a Grand Slam! TE is responsible for the Rules and the Regulations of tennis in the UAE and the running and enforcing of a joint anti-doping programme. TE works closely with organizations holding tennis events in the UAE such as ATP World Tour, WTA, ITF Juniors, Challengers, Satellites, Asian, Arab and GCC Competition and Exhibitions, etc. TE participates in the organization of local and international competitions strongly emphasizing the development and promotion of the game.

For the first time in the region, TE managed a successful 2014 ITF Annual General Meeting in Dubai. More than eighty nations participated and praised TE for their wonderful organization. The outcome of the meetings was a great boost for the region and congratulatory letters and emails are still pouring in two months post-event. For a few days, the Davis Cup trophy was displayed around Dubai in different places for the public to view. TE is also a strong supporter of the Mubadala Community Programmes run annually in conjunction with the MWTC that offer youth the opportunity to get involved in tennis from an early age. Encouraging kids to not only play tennis but to learn the importance and benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle is of very high importance to TE. TE is pleased to announce an outstanding achievement of the 16’s & Under TE National Team taking the Gold medal at the GCC Championship Cup 2014 with the U12’s receiving the bronze medal.
