ring rusty world No.1, a titleholder with half an eye on his Open Championship defence and his heart set on an elusive Ryder Cup debut, a fan favourite gunning for a share of history. To the names of Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood add PGA Tour winners Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay as genuine contenders to win the $7 million Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship presented by EGA. How about Brandon Grace after an amazing 62 to capture his home South African Open last Sunday, or any one of a posse of major champions, Ryder Cup stars and decorated European Tour players looking for a quick start to the new decade? Another stellar cast ensures the 15th fight for the Falcon trophy and the year’s first Rolex Series gold star will be nothing if not utterly absorbing once again. A European Tour debut for 15-year-old amateur qualifier Josh Hill, who created

global headlines when he became the youngest winner of an Official World Golf Ranking event by capturing the MENA Tour’s Al Ain Open last October, adds considerable local intrigue. Abu Dhabi Golf Club is again a fitting stage for golf’s “best of the best”. None are better currently than Koepka so expect much of the early narrative to centre around how the four-time major champion pulls up today after his first competitive round since withdrawing from a PGA Tour stop in South Korea on Oct. 18 with a knee injury. Lowry returns to The National with the callused, pre-season hands of a man determined to kick on from a career year. The Irishman will hope to become the third player after Martin Kaymer and Fleetwood to successfully defend the Falcon while Fleetwood can emulate Kaymer as the event’s only three-time winner. The European Tour season may already be four events old but make no mistake, the 2019-20 Race to Dubai gets serious here. ■
