H

aving summited the leaderboard early, Renato Paratore and Shaun Norris clearly have designs on staying put throughout the remainder of the 15th Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. With the world No.1 lurking so ominously, that’ll be easier said than done, of course.

Rounds of 64, both coincidentally blighted by bogeys on the par-3 7th, will see Paratore (pictured above) and Norris (inset) take a two stroke buffer into Friday at the $7 million Rolex Series event. It’s way too early for leaderboard watching but chances are neither will be able to avoid it the way Brooks Koepka returned to competitive golf on The National layout Thursday.

Koepka’s bogey-free 66, matched

by Aussie Jason Scrivener, belied the three months he spent on the sidelines recuperating from surgery on his left knee. With four majors and a swag of other top flight wins, the 29-year-old American will clearly have no issue playing the role of hunter.

Both pacesetters at least bring form with them to Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

Paratore was second at the Mauritius Open last month and the 23-year-old Italian knows how to win too, even if the world No. 267’s sole triumph came back at the 2017 Nordea Masters.

Norris is still searching for a maiden European Tour victory but the world No.59 is no journeyman, having claimed

a pair of Asian Tour wins and two more on the Sunshine Tour – to go with six visits to Q-School. With a win, three seconds and seven top-five finishes in his last 14 starts, mostly in Japan, things are finally looking up.

“It’s been a rough year last year after losing my father. But my brother is back on the bag again and feels like everything is working at moment,” said the 37-yearold South African. “We are having a lot of fun out there, and that’s the main thing.

Really happy with what’s happening.

“Who wouldn’t want to win one of these events. To win one of the Rolex Series events to start off the year would be fantastic. I’ll stick to my game plan and just see what happens.” ■

f Brooks Koepka’s peers were secretly hoping the world No.1 would slowly ease his way back into competitive golf and leave them to scrap it out for the Falcon trophy this week, well, they should have known better.

A bogey-free 66 represented a fine return after three months out rehabbing his surgically repaired left knee.

It left the 29-year-old American just two shots adrift of -8 pacesetters Renato Paratore and Shaun Norris and ominously poised at the 15th Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. So much for ring rust.

“I’ve kind of known I’ve been hitting it really well, putting it really well for a couple of weeks,” said Koepka after his fastest start to the $7 million Rolex Series event following a 77 when he missed the cut here in 2014 and a 67 en-route to a T-9 finish last year.

“I think the first day I picked up the club, same thing. Felt like I hadn’t left. I’ve done it for years and years. You don’t forget how to swing the golf club.”

Apparently not. Koepka wasn’t flawless off the tee but managed to escape an awkward, partially (tree) impeded waste area lie at the first real hint of trouble on the 6th, his fourth to last hole after starting on 10. Throughout he relied on some silky touches around the greens, normally the last part of your game to return after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines, as he sauntered around the pristine National layout and up the front page of the leaderboard. The highlight was a chip-in birdie on the 17th, his 8th hole, from some gnarly rough beyond the green, before another gain from out of a greenside trap at the next to turn in four-under.

A lengthy putt for another birdie on the 2nd, his 11th hole, also made the highlights reel.

“Yeah, solid. I like the way I’ve played,” he said. “Controlled distances. Controlled flights. Controlled spin. Everything.

That’s exactly what you want to do. Felt good to be back out playing, just feeling the competition again. I’m pretty pleased with it.

“To chip one in there, I wasn’t expecting that, but my short game was really good. The strike was really good. I worked hard with Pete [Cowan] in trying to make sure that I know

what I’m doing, and understand what I’m doing and can make it repeatable.”

Koepka clearly seems to have Abu Dhabi Golf Club, with its lengthened 11th and 16th holes, sussed even if his new TaylorMade SiM driver wasn’t fully co-operating.

“Some of these fairways are like 12 yards wide, so I’m not really expecting to hit them,” he said. “But when you know where the pins are at, you can kind of play the hole backwards and figure out if you can be aggressive off the tee and hit driver…sometimes it pays off to have that lob wedge, even when it’s in the rough, and other times you’ve just got to lay it back. You’ve got to understand the golf course and really how to play it.”

As a statement of intent for the busy year ahead, Koepka’s opening round of 2020 was mightily impressive. Perhaps the only question mark now is how his knee pulls up overnight even if there were no concerns immediately after his opening gambit.

“I feel fine physically. I’m out of shape but…,” he said before being interrupted.

“You don’t look out of shape?”

“Well, it takes a little bit to get in golfing shape. You stand on the putting green for 30 minutes and putt and your back starts to ache. Just little things like that. But it will be fine.

Only take a couple more weeks.”

It’s scary to think how Koepka might play once he’s back up to full fitness.

“I’m excited and it will be nice to be able to practice again. I haven’t been able to practice; last year, I just couldn’t practice. It was too painful and wasn’t being able to do the things I wanted to do.

“I told my team last year, I was just going to really rededicate myself for the next five, six years, and we’ll see where we are. From there, you know, who knows, other things might be a priority.”

Who knows what Koepka’s record might eventually look like. One round doesn’t make a tournament, much less a season, but on the early evidence, don’t be surprised if 2020 Abu Dhabi champion is part of the legacy. – Kent Gray

esterday was a timely reminder of why this is one of the best weeks in the sporting calendar. We were lucky enough to witness an incredible start to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA; Brooks Koepka, world No.1, got his tournament off to a strong start with a brilliant round of six-under par with Australian Jason Scrivener also registering a 66.

Spaniards, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Sergio Garcia, also begun the tournament in fine form with a pair of 67’s.

The best round of the morning, however, came from Italian Renato Paratore who put together a spectacular round of eight-under par. The best of the afternoon play came from South African Shaun Norris who matched Paratore’s 64 and registered an incredible nine birdies over the course of the round.

The Championship Village, a staple of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA, is focussing on family-fun and wellbeing this year and was full of spectators enjoying the experience. Whether it is watching the world-famous Trick Shot boys, tackling the formidable obstacle course or trying your hand at VR golf, there is truly something for everyone in this year’s Championship Village. We’re just one round in, but we’ve already seen some of the best players in the world displaying their incredible talent to an enthusiastic crowd of UAE golf fans. With the likes of world No.1 Brooks Koepka putting on quite the show yesterday, the leaderboard is fascinatingly poised heading into round two.

we were not disappointed with their responses! Brooks Koepka predicted that Rory McIlroy would dominate the Majors this decade, while the subject of slow play set pulses racing, including Bryson DeChambeau who admitted that a round of golf should take no longer than 3hrs 30mins. Joining the stars at the launch event were members of the HSBC Future Falcons Junior Golf programme. Standing shoulder to shoulder with some of their sporting heroes and helping them measure up for the next decade of golf, these future stars of UAE golf had a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it was a privilege to be able to make that a reality.

Activities like these are a key part of bringing our partnership with the tournament to life in a way that is fun and open, helping to encourage the growth of the sport. We are committed to supporting the development of golf in the region and we are proud to work alongside our partners, The Abu Dhabi Sports Council and The European Tour, to make sustainable growth of the sport a reality.

New sticks, smiling Sergio

N

ew year, new clubs, same old Sergio Garcia.

A five-under 67 sees the former Masters champion in a six-way tie for fifth heading into Friday’s second round at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. The 40-year-old enjoys his position on the first page of the leaderboard with, among others, fellow former Dubai Desert Classic winners Rafa Cabrera Bello and Haotong Li. It seems he’s just as comfortable with his new Ping driver, Blueprint irons, Glide 3.0 wedges and an Anser-style putter.

Garcia caused the first big equipment stir of 2020 when it emerged he had parted company with Callaway on the eve of this week’s $7 million Rolex Series event. He’d signed a deal to play Callaway woods, irons and wedges, the company’s Chrome Soft balls and an Odyssey putter in 2018 after a 15 year stint with TaylorMade; interestingly he was spotted with a TaylorMade SiM fairway metal yesterday.

He insisted there was no animosity over the Callaway split.

“Unfortunately I wasn’t comfortable enough with the [Chrome Soft] golf ball, and they needed me to play it. You know, we decided to kind of part ways.

Nicely, though, so there was no bad feelings from any part or any side which was great,” Garcia said.

“I’m fairly comfortable. I had some good practice sessions throughout Christmas and New Years. It’s just a matter of kind of getting a bit more used to it

[the new equipment] as the year goes on, but for the most part, you know, it feels quite good and I’m happy the way it went today.”

Why not after a round only marred by a bogey on the 9th, his final hole after starting on the 10th.

“Obviously I would love to par the last but unfortunately that didn’t happen, just a little unfortunate on the last that that pitch bounced on that pitch mark and just died. Other than that, I felt like I played pretty solid. Hit a good amount of shots, good, solid shots, a couple here and there that I didn’t quite commit as well as I should have.”

After winning the Desert Classic in 2017 before going on to claim the green jacket, Garcia clearly has desert pedigree. He wasn’t getting ahead of himself on Thursday but is happy to get the new year off to a fast start.

“I can’t put my hand on it or I can’t tell you exactly why, but I’ve always enjoyed the desert.

It feels like you can hit different kind of shots.

Usually I’m fairly good in the wind, and usually it gets a little breezy here, so that kind of helps my game a little bit.” - Kent Gray

osh Hill opened his maiden European Tour round with a birdie and finished it in similarly spectacular style. All he’s got to do now is sort out the rough stuff in between.

The 15-year-old Dubai amateur eventually signed for a two-over 74 in his Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship debut, meaning he’ll start Friday’s second round tied 97th and with much work to do to make the weekend.

But that’s exactly what the MENA Tour star intends on doing, especially if he can get his wayward driver to cooperate. After the impressive start, Hill was punished for missing three fairways, mixing a total of five birdies with as many bogeys and a double on the 9th.

“Two sixes, on 8 and 9, killed the momentum, and then I started hitting my driver bad on the back nine, which didn’t help,” Hill said afterwards.

“Three bad bogeys, but other than that I was hitting it alright. Just three mistakes and three bad drives.

“I’m a bit disappointed, but it was really good out there. I was a bit nervous walking on greens, if I’m going to stand in front of a line or make a spike mark. But once I got into the round I started to feel more comfortable. Not too happy with the end result, but two-over, and a good round tomorrow hopefully.”

How about that 1st hole, the dream start after rolling in a 15-footer?

“On that first tee, I was shaking a bit over the ball and I was just, in my head, [saying] just take it back and it’ll be fine. Took it back and just ripped it, then holed a good putt. So it was very nerve settling.”

Once he got going the youngster even felt like he belonged.

“It felt normal, actually. It felt like I was playing on the Mena Tour. Just with a few people watching. It was nice that a few people watched and hopefully I’ll get the same support tomorrow.

“Probably the support coming down the last [was the highlight], everybody shouting my name. That was quite nice.”

Hill’s driver can expect a stern talking to overnight before his 8.10am (10th) tee time in the company of Charl Schwartzel and Austrian Matthias Schwab. For the record, Hill matched Schwab’s 74 and is only two shots adrift of former Masters champion Schwartzel. As it stands, the top 60 players and ties are at -1 but the cut mark is likely to be lower.

“I’ve just got to make sure I’m in play off the tee. I lost about four or five shots off the tee today. If I'd just hit it somewhere on the grass, I could’ve probably easily shot two or three under. Considering I was hitting my driver bad, two-over’s not too bad.

“Yeah up early but I don’t mind that. Fresh greens and hopefully a better score.” ■

“Usually in the afternoon the wind picks up and you know that going in, so when you have a morning tee time, you have to take advantage of it. I did that today. Hopefully tomorrow the wind stays down a little bit because this golf course into the wind, or with the wind, can be very difficult.”

“Any time I was out of position, play for par and when I was in the fairway, I could play more aggressively. I think that’s the way we’ll try to play the rest of the week and stick with that plan.”

Next Stars I

f you’re joining us for the first time this year, a warm welcome to you! And if you’re returning, welcome back for what has been a thrilling Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. While some of the biggest names in golf are going head-to-head this week, our focus has also been on golf’s future stars. At HSBC we believe that together we thrive - and that starts with the youngest members of society. In Abu Dhabi, we have invested in the future with our HSBC Future Falcons Junior Golf Programme, which has had a huge impact in getting young people involved in golf.

The HSBC Future Falcons gives children their first swing at the sport in a fun way. Designed to develop golf at a grassroots level across the region, the programme has introduced nearly 80,000 children aged 4 to 16 to the game of golf, with 95 percent of participants receiving their first taste of golf through the programme. Through hundreds of hours of coaching, members of the programme have learnt the basic golfing fundamentals through activities such as HSBC Hours, school visits, and clinics. Some of the HSBC Future Falcons have already gone on to do tremendous things in the game, including Daniel Robinson who at just six years old won the HSBC Future Falcon Under-8 Par 3 competition and who already has two hole in ones under his belt, and Ali Sumaidaa who is 15-years-old and represented the UAE at the Special Olympics and won a silver medal.

It is for this reason that the HSBC Future Falcons Junior Golf programme is so important to us. It is a joint initiative with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) and HSBC and aims to educate, engage and inspire youngsters in a bid to unearth the next generation of UAE golfing talent. The initiative is an

investment in the future of the UAE and the health and well-being of the next generation.

Through the HSBC Future Falcons, the first ever schools golf league has been established in Abu Dhabi through the ‘Skills 4 Schools’ initiative. This is now an active programme in some 39 schools in Abu Dhabi with 18,385 school participants including 7,565 Emirati students. We are very proud of this and look forward to seeing young careers blossom in the years ahead. It won’t be long until some of our HSBC Future Falcons members are teeing it up alongside today’s golfing stars.

This is just one of our global golf grassroots programmes. Our other programmes include the CGA-HSBC China Junior Golf Program – a sustainable long-term structure and framework upon which the future of Chinese golf is being built and helped with the development of two players in the field this week in Haotong Li and Yuxin Lin - and the HSBC Golf Roots programme in the UK, developed in partnership with The Golf Foundation.

The HSBC Future Falcons, an initiative that aims to inspire and engage young children to be the next generation of golfing talent in the UAE, continued their unforgettable week yesterday as they took on two-time European Tour winner, Eddie Pepperell, in a series of challenges including a chipping competition.

Following the event, we caught up with Emirati local and star of the future, Sara Al Hashmi…

How did you get into golf?

My mum and dad bought me a plastic set when I was three years old and after a few more years bought me a real set. I really enjoyed it and have been playing golf for the last eight years.

What do you like most about the game?

I like how you get to hit balls very far, which you can do in many sports, but especially in golf. I can’t hit it as far as my dad right now but I’m practicing to be better than him!

Who is your favourite player and why?

I used to like Rory McIlroy but now I like Bryson DeChambeau. I like him because he has a great golf swing and is a very nice guy. I met him on Wednesday when we teed off from the 4th hole together. It was very exciting to have the chance to play with my favourite professional golfer.

Who are you most looking forward to watching at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championships presented by EGA? Um… probably Bryson because I saw him play one of the holes today on TV and it looked like a great shot, so I think he if keeps hitting those type of shots, he will win.

Who do you think will win the 2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championships presented by EGA? I think it will be either Bryson DeChambeau or Brooks Koepka. I haven’t looked at the scoreboard today, but I think it will be one of those two. abudhabichampionship.com

SAFETY Golf can be a dangerous game – even with the best players in the world the ball doesn’t always go where it is intended! Be aware of your location on the course and pay attention to any instructions given to you by the course marshals; their role is to ensure the smooth running of the tournament and to ensure the players are not distracted by any untoward noise or movement.

It’s best to stay quiet and still while the players are about to hit the ball – but feel free to clap or cheer at any other time when you’re impressed by the standard of play!

STAY BEHIND THE ROPES There are rope lines along both sides of most holes. These ropes are put there to ensure the hole is clearly defined for the players and the TV audience, but importantly they also mark where it is considered safe for spectators to stand and watch the action.

It is, therefore, in your own interest to stay behind the ropes and only cross fairways at the designated crossing points – there’s usually at least one on every hole. If a ball lands on the spectator side of the ropes, please do not touch or move the ball. A course marshal will then move the ropes and instruct you where it will be safe to stand.

PHONES Please ensure your mobile phone is switched to ‘silent’ mode and the ‘flash’ function is switched off. If you have to make or take a call, please talk quietly and avoid disturbing the players and/or other spectators.

AUTOGRAPHS The players will not sign autographs on the course during play, but are quite happy to do so once they have finished their rounds or at designated autograph sessions in the Championship Village.

CAMERAS While cameras may only be used on the golf course by officially accredited photographers you may use your mobile phone camera so long as the flash is not activated.

RESPECT THE PLAYERS You may have a favourite player competing for this year’s title, but we ask that you do not applaud or cheer a mistake made by one of their opponents.

his year’s Championship Village came to life yesterday in spectacular fashion at the 2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. With an assortment of activities designed to promote well-being and family fun on offer, day two promises to be even more enjoyable!

For the early bird, gates open at 6.45am with a mouth-watering variety of food available from 7am, including quality meats from Shmokins’ Low & Slow and delicious burgers from BurgerItch.

With the exceptional standard of golf set to continue on day two, make sure you catch the pros teeing off from 7.20am. The players will tee-off at 10-minute intervals until 9am with the second set of teetimes starting at 11.45am.

One of the main attractions in the Championship Village this year is the brand-new eTour Competition that starts at 10am. As part of the annual season long eTour, eight competitors from around the world will do battle at World Golf Tour (WGT) by Topgolf for an eye-watering $10,000 prize. If gaming is your thing, then be sure to check out this unique competition.

The Trick Shot boys return for a second day running and will be performing their mesmeric bag of tricks over on the Garden Course, where they will take on the major winners of tomorrow in the form of the HSBC Future Falcons.

Today is also Ladies Day; glamorous women from across the world will be dressed to impress in preparation for the annual “Best Dressed” competition. They will be judged by a panel of world class fashionistas with the winner set to claim two business class flights to any Etihad destination, one night’s stay for two at the Shangri La Qarayat Al Beri, along with spa vouchers and the wonderland brunch.

To round off a remarkable day of activity in the Championship Village, the Mini Village Vibes stage comes to life at 5.45pm. Adjacent to the first tee, different bands throughout the week will perform a collection of party classics to ensure the day draws to a close in style. ■
