T
he Gulf has forged a reputation as a global tourism hub of distinction over the past decade, admired for its ambitious destination development strategies, world-class airlines and hotels, iconic architecture and more. The region has made no secret of its aspirations to be the best of the best, but until recently, was arguably judged solely on it headlinegrabbing aesthetics. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gulf has demonstrated there is much more to its tourism success than clever marketing, first-class cabins, glitzy suites, giant shopping malls and the world’s tallest tower. Countries have proven adept at tackling the health crisis having implemented stringent health and safety measures, industry leading innovations and strategies that have re-booted their tourism sectors despite the unprecedented challenges. Stand out examples include the UAE, which opened its borders to international travellers in July and where emirates including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah have not only rolled out their own tourism sector health and safety programmes, but have been awarded the ‘Safe Travels’ stamp from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) - the first global safety and hygiene certification for the travel and tourism industry, specifically designed to combat COVID-19 and similar outbreaks. Ras Al Khaimah was the first emirate to achieve the council’s stamp and notably, the first city globally to be certified as a ‘safe destination’ by international certification body Bureau Veritas.
The emirate also took the lead in testing all tourism and hospitality staff for COVID-19, closely followed by Abu Dhabi and from August 1, every air passenger entering or transiting the UAE must have a PCR test, demonstrating to the world the country’s commitment to monitoring and controlling the spread of the virus. We should not forget the airlines either, with Emirates the first carrier globally to conduct rapid pre-flight COVID-19 tests and the first to cover passenger COVID-19 medical and quarantine expenses. Meanwhile, Etihad has teamed up with Mediclinic to ensure customers can easily access testing prior to departure, with a home test service included in its offering. At its hub, Abu Dhabi International, the airline is also testing contactless health screening kiosks that can monitor a passenger’s temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate to help identify those that might have early COVID-19 symptoms. There are many more examples of measures that have set global standards and as a country that has been proactive and forward thinking throughout the pandemic, the UAE is gaining traveller confidence and trust, which in today’s world is the ultimate destination goal.

LIVE EVENTS MAKE DUBAI COMEBACK THE GOVERNMENT OF DUBAI has released a directive allowing live indoor and outdoor meetings and events to resume in the city. Concerts, conferences, exhibitions, seminars, training sessions, banquets, product launches, weddings and more are now permitted to take place, but venues must implement strict health and safety measures, including sanitisation, thermal screening and capacity limits. At seated events participants must adhere to a minimum of two metres social distancing, with two seats to be kept vacant between each group or between solo guests, including in VIP areas. Standing events have the same guidelines, but there must be markings on the floor to show individual and group spaces. Online ticket purchases are strongly advised but if event-goers need to visit the box office, floor markers must be in place to ensure social distancing in the queue Venues must also organise a staggered entry for ticket holders while post-event, guests should exit row-by-row via marked walkways. Guests and staff are required to wear masks at all times and performers are permitted to
remove their mask provided they remain at least four metres away from the audience. Physical interaction between performers and participants is strictly prohibited. In addition, all venues must be sanitised every 30 minutes for events of more than 25 people and every hour for events of under 25 people, as well as at the end of each day and at the end of the event. Pre-packaged food with disposable cutlery is allowed, while buffets must adhere to social distancing measures, including in queues, and self-service is not permitted. to cover its passengers’ COVID-19 costs. The airline will pay medical expenses of up to EUR 150,000 (US$173,000) and quarantine costs of EUR 100 ($114) per day for 14 days should guests be diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travels, while they are away from home. “Emirates has worked hard to put in place measures at every step of the customer journey to mitigate risk of infection. We are now taking it to the next level by being the first in the industry to offer our customers free global cover for COVID-19 medical expenses and quarantine costs should they incur these costs during their travel. It is an investment on our part, but we are
putting our customers first,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive. The cover, offered to all Emirates passengers free of charge, regardless of class of travel or destination, is valid until October 31, (with the first flight to be completed on or before this date). It is valid for 31 days from the moment they fly the first sector of their journey. This means Emirates customers can continue to benefit from the added assurance of this cover, even if they travel onwards to another city after arriving at their Emirates destination. Customers do not need to register or complete any documentation before they travel.

ABU DHABI MANDATES TOURISM STAFF COVID TESTS
NEW ‘DUBAI ASSURED’ PROGRAMME ROLLED OUT ACROSS TOURISM SECTOR
10
DUBAI HAS LAUNCHED a compliance programme to certify and recognise hotels and retail establishments, F&B outlets and attractions that have implemented all public health protocols for the prevention and management of COVID-19. The initiative is part of efforts to showcase Dubai as “one of the world’s safest destinations” as it continues to receive tourists following the city’s reopening to international visitors in July. The verification and validation process has been established in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism), Department of Economic Development (Dubai Economy) and Dubai Municipality, with the ‘DUBAI ASSURED’ stamp issued to tourism-related organisations that have complied with health and safety guidelines issued in accordance with the preventive protocols outlined by Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management. The stamp is valid for 15 days and can be renewed every two weeks upon further inspection. More than 1,000 establishments have already received the ‘DUBAI ASSURED’ stamp. “With health and safety foremost on the minds of travellers when selecting their destination, the ‘DUBAI ASSURED’ seal is a simple yet critical mechanism to ensure tourists enjoy a smooth and safe experience at every stage of their journey, from arrival at our airports to their departure from Dubai,” said His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Dubai Tourism. “The Safe Travels stamp Dubai received recently from the World Travel & Tourism Council further validates the city’s efforts to implement stringent hygiene and safety protocols and align itself with international health and safety standards and best practices.”
UAE TRAVEL UPDATE Passengers travelling to the UAE can now take their pre-fight COVID-19 test at any reputable overseas clinic. Federal crisis authority Ncema has said any facility approved by the government of the country of departure can conduct the tests. All residents, tourists and citizens must be tested within 96 hours of travelling to the UAE and present their negative report to airline check-in desk staff. Previously, travellers were required to take a test at UAErecognised clinics affiliated with Gulf testing lab Pure Health.

As Business Traveller went to press, Abu Dhabi was well on track to achieving total Go Safe certification by the end of August, with 146 venues already achieving this status by the end of July. All Go Safe-certified establishments are assessed against 313 checkpoints.
SHARJAH LAUNCHES TOURISM SAFETY STAMP

Jeddah
Set aside some time to explore this Red Sea city during your next business trip; you won’t be disappointed SEPTEMBER 2020

eddah is Saudi Arabia’s oldest city; a lively, cosmopolitan centre that is home to stunning architecture, pristine beaches and world-class cuisine. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in this historic mercantile hub, take some time out to discover how an ancient port has evolved into one of the region’s most popular ‘hidden’ gems.
1
Awaken your taste buds with Arabic coffee
Jeddah is known for its café culture and there are numerous places to grab a cup of coffee around the city – from a thimble-sized cup of aromatic Arabic coffee to an international-style latte with a local twist. Situated in Old Jeddah, Café Magad (@cafe_ magad) blends modern speciality coffee with a traditional Arabic brew, while Medd Café (meddcoffee.com/ en), the first café of its kind in Jeddah, sources its beans from international organic fair-trade farms.
2 largest market, you can find all manner of goods, from Arabian jewellery and Islamic art to local street food. Make sure not to accept the first price given to you as bargaining here is a must! In the centre of the Souq is Naseef House, once the home of King Abdul Aziz, the first monarch and founder of Saudi Arabia and today, a museum and cultural centre. Look out for the huge tree to the left of the door – up until 1920, this was the only tree in the whole of Jeddah. Tours of Jeddah’s historic old town can be taken independently or through Deira Tours (deira. com.sa) or Palms Land Tours (palmslandtours.com).

Wander through Jeddah’s Old Town
Spend the morning exploring the narrow streets of Jeddah’s historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as ‘the Bridge of the Red Sea’, Jeddah has welcomed traders and pilgrims for centuries and has been the official seaport for the Holy City of Makkah since 647CE. The best way to explore the old city is on foot. Start at the eastern edge of Al Balad (old town) by Makkah Gate. The city walls have been reconstructed to give you a sense of how this medieval city’s ancient walls once looked. Notice the beautiful architecture of the houses, built using coral from the Red Sea. The Matbouli House Museum is an example of a traditional Hijazi merchant’s home, minimally refurbished and converted into a museum containing wood lattice balconies and old artefacts. Continue walking and you will uncover Souq Al Alawi, which runs off Al Dahab St. Here, in Saudi Arabia’s

Try a tasty seafood lunch
As a coastal city, Jeddah is known for its seafood. Check out Miami-style Blue Ocean for seafood platters and, in the north of the city, Al Qalzam Fisheries. For something quick to go, you could try ‘Khubz’ flatbread (Arabic for ‘bread’) at Shukri bakery in the old town. Or, if you’re keen to sample a Saudi fast-food favourite, try Al Baik’s (albaik.com/en) fried chicken – Al Baik has more than 40 branches in Jeddah.
4
Visit Jeddah’s floating mosque
Located on the Red Sea coast, this beautiful mosque is one of Jeddah’s most popular attractions. Al Rahma, also known as ‘the floating mosque’, appears to be hovering above the water. Constructed in 1985 it blends traditional Islamic and modern architecture and uses state-of-the-art technology, including a digital display informing visitors of the day’s prayer times. The mosque is open 24 hours a day to Muslims and non-Muslims, but visitors should note that prayer times, held five times daily, are busy. Men and women are asked to pray separately and to dress modestly when entering the mosque.
5
Check out the world’s largest flagpole
Situated in the centre of King Abdullah Square is Jeddah’s flagpole. Erected in 2014, it has since become a major landmark of the city and was officially approved by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s tallest flagpole. Be sure to pass by to see Saudi Arabia’s national flag fluttering 171 metres in the sky. SEPTEMBER 2020

Opt for a selection of appetisers including hummus, muhammara (a spicy walnut and red pepper dip) and kibbeh (a Levantine dish made of bulgur wheat and finely ground lean beef, lamb, goat, or camel meat with Middle Eastern spices). If you are still hungry, try fatteh, a traditional Lebanese dish of baked yoghurt, tahini and chickpeas with the addition of eggplant or ground beef. hen the world went into lockdown, with offices and venues closing their doors and business travel virtually grinding to a halt, the meetings and events industry took a huge hit. The working population and businesses adapted quickly, thanks to video conferencing technology, leaving hotels and venues wondering how they would fit into the ‘new normal’ given the effectiveness of these online solutions. Zoom emerged as the pandemic’s global success story; for the quarter ending April 2020, the USheadquartered video communications specialist reported a massive 169 per cent year-on-year revenue hike to reach US$328.2 million, while daily meeting participants peaked at more than 300 million during the period, up from 10 million in 2019. Zoom’s measurement of “annualised meeting minutes” jumped 20-fold, from 100 billion at the end of January to more than two trillion in April. “We were humbled by the accelerated adoption of the Zoom platform around the globe in Q1,” says Eric S. Yuan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zoom. “The COVID-19 crisis has driven higher demand for distributed, face-toface interactions and collaboration using Zoom. Use cases have grown rapidly as people integrated Zoom into their work, learning and personal lives.” Despite restrictions on work, travel and events easing in many countries around the world, Zoom and similar platforms have become integrated into every facet of life and are now commonplace for meetings, conferences and more, even mega sporting events. Most recently, Formula 1 and Zoom Video Communications announced a new digital partnership to deliver the first ever virtual Paddock Club. Guests who join the Virtual Paddock Club through Zoom access a bespoke hospitality experience including live updates and insights from paddock legends, with more features planned.

Hybrid is the ‘new black’
With virtual tools proving their worth as a viable alternative to face-to-face interaction, where does that leave the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector? According to Tim Cordon, Area Senior Vice President Middle East & Africa, Radisson Hotel Group, the MICE market is one of the “biggest challenges” facing the hospitality industry given the post-COVID-19 recovery will be “mainly driven by a rebound in domestic travel”. “The meetings that will take place in person will need to have a very strong reason to happen. They will likely be limited to domestic events and have virtual alternatives as a replacement until there is a vaccine or other cure,” he says. SEPTEMBER 2020
“Small and local safe meetings will be the way the event “A lasting trend of industry rebuilds and COVID-19 will be the makes its comeback: internal meetings, increasing popularity of small workshops and hybrid events” seminars held locally with attendees from the near vicinity and the same geographic area.” Cordon says while most face-to-face events will resume when possible, “a lasting trend of COVID-19 will be the increasing popularity of hybrid events”, blending live and online participation. “Hybrid is the new black,” he declares, adding: “Perhaps the biggest Tim Cordon, Radisson Hotel Group
shift the hospitality industry has seen over the past few months is the ‘pivot’ from in-person events to virtual ones.” Milou van Zweeden, Events, Sales & Meetings Manager at Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara in Abu Dhabi, agrees that hybrid meetings will dominate in the near future. “Some people will use the hotel [venues] in person and others will attend the meeting [online] from overseas,” she says. “By leveraging the latest technology we can ensure meetings are easily accessible. [For example], QR codes will also be available to help guests register and manage event experiences.” The resort, which recently received the Go Safe health and safety certification programme endorsed by the Abu Dhabi Government, plans to

make the most of its outdoor venues, including Camp Nujum (Camp of the Stars), providing a tent and majlis setup in the desert valley. “We are also offering buyouts for our Royal Pavilion private villas or the entire resort,” adds van Zweeden. Although Abu Dhabi had not given the MICE industry the go ahead to resume operations at time of press, sister property, Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel, which is located in the city, was witnessing demand for “social events, weddings, corporate trainings and budget and sales meetings with local focus due to travel restrictions”, according to Group and Events Manager, Lamiaa Fatihi. Similarly, Rove Hotels, part of Emaar Hospitality Group (EHG), has received “more interest in hosting

The team is also noticing tremendous traction on temporary office spaces where employees can continue working remotely in their own private space [at the hotel],” he adds. Customisable spaces are core to the Rove hospitality model and this has paid dividends during the pandemic with clients using a variety of venues – from meeting rooms to guest rooms – to work or stage meetings and hybrid events. Many of Rove’s meeting rooms have been repurposed, notes Bridger, with standout examples including “the new self-service Rove Podcast Studio at Rove Downtown Dubai, which gives budding and established digital
content creators the chance to utilise a dedicated room setup”. “We are definitely going down the route of hybrid events, so we have implemented smooth and fuss-free videoconferencing technology [at our hotels],” he adds. The brand has also teamed up with Letswork to launch its guest rooms as private hotel offices. Day passes are bookable via the Letswork app giving guests access to specially fitted-out rooms at Rove properties to use as their office from 6am to 10pm. (IHG) to think outside the box, according to Head of Operations MEA, David Todd. “It’s definitely the time to get creative and we expect to receive some unusual requests,” he says. “As an example, a financial institution requested that for one of its smaller meetings, the speakers and delegates be seated in separate rooms. As a solution, the hotel split the speakers into different hotel rooms with an AV set up in each and a reduced number of delegates in the main room with the presentations broadcast on the main screen. Initially, the organiser was apprehensive about the information flow, however, the event proceeded smoothly and the technology support was commended.” Todd says the MICE sector needs re-thinking in the short term as larger meetings in most Middle East destinations have been cancelled or postponed. “At IHG we have already started to look at whitespace areas of the hotel that can be used for impromptu meetings for smaller gatherings or social hubs that can incorporate the new guidelines but allow for more flexibility,” he explains.

DUBAI BALLROOM REIMAGINED AS A SPORTS ZONE Hotel ballrooms have become somewhat obsolete during the pandemic with glittering events, weddings, gala dinners and the like taking a back seat. It has led creative hoteliers to re-think these spaces, with Dubai’s Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City transforming its ballroom into a sports zone. As the Formula One season got underway and the UEFA Champions League and Europa League drew to an exciting conclusion last month (August), the property launched Grand Garden M’City – a sports fan zone experience with two 220-inch screens showcasing all the sporting action. Hosting up to 120 guests, the stadium-style venue serves freshly baked pizza, cheesy nachos, calamari and a wide selection of beverages to keep sports enthusiasts going during essential viewing. Grand Garden M’City follows strict health and safety regulations with measures in place including a digital menu available through a QR code and social distancing between tables. Dubai goes live

“There is no doubt that the event industry is going to look a lot different in the medium term”
Just as Dubai was one of the first regional destinations to open its doors to tourism, so it has taken the lead in re-invigorating its MICE industry and last month (August), the government released a directive allowing live indoor and outdoor meetings and events to resume in the city. Concerts, conferences, exhibitions, seminars, training sessions, banquets, product launches, weddings and more are now permitted in the emirate, although venues must implement strict health and safety measures, including sanitisation, thermal screening, social distancing seating SEPTEMBER 2020
plans and capacity limits, to name a few. Venues were quick to react, with the Festive Arena at InterContinental Dubai Festival City hosting Dubai’s first ‘live’ concert since the start of the pandemic. “While the arena’s physical capacity is more than 5,000 people, this time the venue was kitted out with booths that could be booked for small groups. The concert was also livestreamed on the day to allow for greater attendance,” explains Todd. “There are already more discussions for concerts later this year, at the same venue with a similar setup.” Meanwhile, Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena, located in City Walk offers
versatile indoor spaces that can safely accommodate corporate and private events of all shapes and sizes, says CEO Guy Ngata. “Thanks to the unique layout of the main bowl in the arena, which can be changed due to the built-in automatic drape reduction and retractable seating systems, any layout is possible across a floor area covering 3,870sq metres,” he notes. “This adaptability means social distancing guidelines and preventative measures can be adhered to at all times for gatherings of between 50 and 3,000 people while providing creative floor plans and experiences.” Coca-Cola Arena also offers multiple rooms outside of the main

bowl that can be utilised by smaller groups. “There is no doubt the event industry is going to look a lot different in the medium term as organisers and venues adapt to new procedures, protocols and etiquette and we will all need to work together to bring back to life this thriving sector of Dubai,” says Ngata. “We are talking to many event organisers locally and internationally and we are very pleased to see a confidence in the market to return to some degree of event activity, certainly around conferences and networking events. Many dates that were scheduled across Dubai in Q1 and Q2 are now looking at how

they can proceed in Q4 with new objectives and needs and we are very happy to have those conversations.” Coca-Cola Arena is a VenueShield protected venue. VenueShield is a new environmental hygiene protocol with a comprehensive, best-in-class programme deployed across all of the arenas, stadia and theatres globally managed by Coca-Cola Arena’s management company, ASM Global. Measures adopted include advanced hygienic safeguards, thermal cameras at all entrances, hand sanitiser freely available, increased sanitisation and cleaning sweeps before, during and after events and social distancing protocols.

Hotels have also implemented stringent health and safety programmes to protect guests attending face-to-face meetings and events. Hilton Hotels was one of the first to announce it sector-specific measures, which leverage its partnership with RB, makers of Lysol and Dettol and is an extension of the Hilton CleanStay programme. Hilton EventReady with CleanStay applies cleanliness protocols to “every touchpoint of the meeting experience”. These include meeting rooms seals and an extensive EventReady Room Checklist. and curated resources for solutions, such as hybrid meetings that seamlessly combine on-site attendees with those in remote locations, room sets and creative networking”. “In today’s new normal we know that people planning and attending events of any size are focused on their health and safety,” says Chris Nassetta, President and CEO, Hilton. “Hilton EventReady delivers innovative solutions for the entire event experience – from flexibility in planning and physical distancing protocols to transparency in cleanliness policies and inspiring catering options.” Radisson has introduced a 10-step protocol for meeting and event spaces at its hotels, developed in collaboration with partner SGS, a leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. Focal points range from personal belongings, sanitising stations and increased cleaning and disinfecting to physical distancing and food safety. Cordon says this new commitment to health and safety builds on the established wellness trend, which is more important than ever in 2020. “From more fitness centres to an onus on healthy food options, mindfulness and getting a good sleep, health has been an important factor at events for years and COVID-19 has amplified this focus on being bodysmart,” he notes. IHG’s MICE facilities fall under the IHG Clean Promise programme. “Additionally, we have had to rethink how we sell large meeting space within government guidelines and how to generate demand as markets recover,” says Todd. “For this we have created a programme called Mindful Meetings to reassure guests and MICE organisers that in addition to the enhanced cleanliness standards, they can continue to expect a great meeting experience with greater flexibility in meeting room setups, as well as terms and conditions.” Rove Hotels was quick to implement strict safety measures and SEPTEMBER 2020

‘ANTI-SOCIAL CLUB’ SETS NEW UK TREND
While many in the hotel and hospitality industry grapple with the challenge of converting their facilities to accommodate complex social distancing requirements, a boutique hotel in South-West England has opened the doors to the UK’s first purpose-designed and built ‘socially distanced’ hotel restaurant. Nicknamed ‘The Anti-Social Club’, the new dining concept at Cornwall’s St Moritz Hotel & Spa features 16 private dining rooms, providing a unique and exclusive private dining experience for individuals, couples and groups, with a maximum of 96 covers. Mixing the elements of private members clubs, private dining rooms, cool beach clubs and summer pop-up restaurants, the Anti-Social Club offers multiple dining times and follows UK government health and safety guidance. the Department of Health’s ‘Estijaba’ service for COVID-19 control. Temperature checks are standard at Rove too, as are individually packed meals and private catering for meetings delegates. Most hotels have eliminated buffet stations from the meeting experience, notes Todd, “but in specific markets or where a greater footfall is expected, we have assisted buffets in place, which still allow for a safe experience and a greater variety of dishes”. “We are also looking at the wellbeing offering in terms of healthier choices being considerate of what our guests are asking for at the moment. We do see this space evolving if the buffet service remains restricted in most markets. As an example, the concept of the Japanese style bento box has been around for quite a while and we are sure there is opportunity to add more variations, depending on what the organiser is looking for.”

OPINION
Working towards sustainable recovery When the pandemic subsides, smarter travel should be at the top of company agendas, says Sarah Wilkin, the founder and CEO of the Fly Green Alliance
28
A
s we know, business travel isn’t all Champagne and business-class seats. In fact, for many, it’s never that, and on the negative side, extensive travel can impact our health and wellbeing. Despite the personal and professional stresses we have witnessed during this lockdown, it has also given many of us the chance to take a break from the daily grind. We have proven that flexible working is possible – we can be productive while spending time with loved ones – but once the lockdown ends, will we return to the way we were? Before the pandemic, corporations were working towards sustainability. To drop a few names, Amex GBT, Booking.com, SAP Concur, Microsoft and Mastercard are all on this journey with their business strategy aligning with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria.
SEPTEMBER 2020
A high ESG score is not only good for the environment, but for business too. Share prices often increase as sustainability commitments are made and employee satisfaction and engagement improves. To take specific examples, in January, Microsoft announced it would throw US$1 billion into decarbonising by 2030 and removing historical carbon by 2050. Meanwhile, 90 per cent of consultancy firm PWC’s carbon footprint is from travel and it recognises the need to address this. All companies can start to ‘Travel Smart’, which in some cases may even mean choosing not to travel at all. Many will realise that video conferencing and working from home or the office is advantageous for the bottom line and the environment. If the pandemic can act as a test case for new ways of working, then some good may have come of it. Employees are proving they can be trusted to work from home and this
will lead to flexible working arrangements being added to more company policies. We have the technology, we have smart people and we have the money when we need it, so why is finance not reaching the circular economy, green projects and emission-reduction programmes as quickly as it should, even though we have now seen the benefits of cleaner ways? In April, an appeal for a #GreenRecovery was proposed in European Parliament. The idea is that bailouts and -re-building the economy should be a ‘Green Deal’ and conditions should be applied while finances are being shared out. We believe this is a prime opportunity to accelerate the work towards carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement. We set up flygreenalliance.org to support the mission to increase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The challenge is that even as greener fuel is adopted, a predicted doubling of aviation passenger traffic by 2036 to 7.8 billion passengers would swamp any improvement gained from SAF, so we needed to broaden our mission and encourage people to fly less. This led to us establishing the FGA Travel Smart programme (FGAtravelsmart. com), challenging the corporate travel industry to consider employee wellbeing, reduce global carbon emission, create optimum productivity and ensure the future of travel and business is sustainable and supported by all. We advocate quality travel, which means paying to fly green and making a contribution to decarbonising the industry through meaningful offsets that support research into industry innovation and which pay for SAF. We have based this on our research and following discussions with companies about their goals to reduce their emissions and contribute to climate work globally. We are working on a best practice sustainable travel policy document and you can register to receive a copy on our website. We welcome your comments and wish to open up some discussions so we can begin to rethink how we conduct work and travel for business, so we can all contribute to our green future. We are #Strongertogether in everything. We have seen this from COVID-19, so let’s work for a #GreenRecovery.

How the pandemic is reshaping the airport experience
WORDS SEHER ASAF
C
leaning robots, sanitising booths, rapid blood tests and contactless kiosks – the coronavirus pandemic is transforming the airport experience worldwide. As border restrictions begin to ease, airports and airlines are looking to restore confidence in travel by redesigning the passenger journey. Airports have adopted a slew of procedures to deal with new customer expectations, according to Stefano Baronci, Director General, Airports Council International (ACI), Asia Pacific. “There are a number of measures airports are considering or have already implemented to create what we call the ‘healthy passenger experience’, which focuses on preventing the risk of [COVID-19] transmission from passenger to passenger,” he explains. “Passengers now expect sanitation measures, contactless journeys, physical distance with other travellers and clear instructions on how to stay safe.” Here, Business Traveller takes a closer look at how the COVID-19 crisis is changing airport experiences around the world.

CONTACTLESS TRAVEL The coronavirus crisis could speed up the adoption of technology that offers a low-touch or even touch-less travel experience at airports. In May, Malaysian low-cost airline Air Asia introduced contactless kiosks and payment options at airports in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Japan where it operates air services. Passengers can check-in and make payments using airport systems without having to actually touch them, according to the carrier. In Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways is testing contactless health screening kiosks that can monitor a passenger’s temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate to help identify those that might have early COVID-19 symptoms. According to the UAE national carrier, the system will automatically suspend the self-service check-in or bag drop process if a passenger’s vital signs show potential symptoms of illness. It will then divert to a teleconference or alert staff at the airport, who will make “further assessments” and “manage travellers as appropriate”. The airline also recently teamed up with Mediclinic Middle East to offer UAE-based travellers a convenient COVID-19 PCR testing service at their home or at a Mediclinic facility before they travel. It’s part of the recently introduced Etihad Wellness sanitisation and safety programme, which aims to maintain health and hygiene standards at every stage of the passenger journey. According to Sumesh Patel, Asia Pacific President at SITA, an IT company providing services to the air transport industry, many familiar airport procedures could soon be a thing of the past. For example, physical check-in desks could be replaced by online or mobile check-in services as airports and airlines look to restore consumer confidence in travel. “Your mobile phone will become your boarding pass and you will be more comfortable using your own device rather than third-party devices SEPTEMBER 2020
at the airport,” says Patel. Although mobile boarding passes have been available for some time, the pandemic could make the use of electronic passes more pervasive, he adds Biometric technology that relies on facial recognition could also offer a potential solution to airports looking to minimise touch during the passenger journey. This type of technology scans and captures a passenger’s biometric details to verify their identity. Once checked against the passenger’s travel documents, a secure digital travel ID is created, which can be used all the way from the self-service check-in to boarding.

ABOVE: Iris and facial recognition for immigration clearance
“When you walk through the airport terminal, your face is your passport so you don’t need to touch anything. When you go to the bag drop you just stand next to it and it recognises you. You don’t need to produce any documents; your face is good enough,” Patel explains. He says SITA’s product that relies on biometrics, Smart Path, is currently operating at multiple airports including Beijing Capital International and Kuala Lumpur International. In July, Singapore’s Changi Airport upgraded its auto-clearance immigration lanes to a touch-less option. The airport’s new biometric system uses face and iris recognition technology to match passengers with their travel documents. This replaces the need for traditional fingerprintscanning.
33
HEALTH SCREENING Airports around the world have adopted a series of health screening measures in the wake of the pandemic, including pre-flight temperature checks. While some airports like Hong Kong International were already conducting these before the pandemic, others are only just catching up. In July, Canada announced temperature screening requirements for passengers at all airports, while thermal scanners have been installed at Dubai International and at Vietnam’s major airports. Meanwhile, London Heathrow is trialling camera systems capable of monitoring the temperatures of multiple people moving through the airport at one time. Temperature checks could become standard as a tool to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. However, according to a report from the
Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the screenings are not 100 per cent effective because some travellers carrying coronavirus will be asymptomatic.

COVID-19 TESTING The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recognises that COVID-19 testing could become the new normal as global travel resumes The aviation body recently called on governments looking to introduce COVID-19 testing for travellers to deliver test results quickly and accurately. IATA says testing must also be costeffective and not create an economic or logistical barrier to travel. Hong Kong International was one of the first airports in the world to introduce COVID-19 testing. All inbound travellers are sent directly from the airport to an off-site testing centre at the Asia World-Expo where saliva samples are collected. SEPTEMBER 2020

Robust cleaning procedures have also become the airport norm
34
The Korean government introduced “walk-through” coronavirus testing stations at Incheon International Airport in March. Travellers enter the booth, which is the size of a public phone box, where a medical staff member collects samples. In April, Emirates became the first airline to conduct on-site rapid COVID-19 tests for passengers. Every passenger on a flight bound to Tunisia was tested before departing Dubai International. The blood test was conducted by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and results were available within 10 minutes, according to the carrier.
FROM TOP: Robots clean at Hong Kong International; Hong Kong is trialling a full-body disinfecting machine SEPTEMBER 2020
ROBOTIC SOLUTIONS Of course, robust cleaning procedures have also become the airport norm and Hong Kong International has deployed self-driving robots to carry out these duties. Its Intelligent Sterilisation Robots (ISR) are equipped with a UV light
steriliser and an air steriliser to kill harmful bacteria. Every ISR has a head that can spin 360 degrees to spray disinfectant and a body that is lined with bulbs that emit ultra-violet lights to zap germs. The airport is also testing a full-body disinfecting booth-style machine that could be used to sanitise passengers. Air movement inside the booths brings any bacteria and viruses on the passenger to the surface and the antimicrobial coating on the interior kills both, according to a spokesperson from Airport Authority Hong Kong. Singapore’s Changi Airport says it has “at least doubled” the frequency of its cleaning efforts in the four terminals and at its dedicated entertainment and retail complex, Jewel. It is now using a chemical liquid that destroys bacteria, instead of “general purpose cleaning solutions”, it stresses.

THE 5G FACTOR The next generation of telecommunications is coming to a hotel near you – and changing the stay as we know it
WORDS MICHAEL ALPINER

SEPTEMBER 2020
TECHNOLOGY OF THINGS
I 5G can transmit data up to 10 times faster than 4G, reaching speeds of over a gigabit of data per second
n the beat-your-chest world of technology, the natural evolution from a 4G network to a 5G network is akin to The Terminator’s progression from cybernetic organism to a robot made of liquid metal. Sure, the shape-shifting killing machine has more bells and whistles, but the “old but not obsolete” model still manages to save the day. So although 5G is the buzzword for the future of hospitality, most owners and operators are sticking with 4G until they can be sure that 5G technology can catch up to its expectations. For one thing, 5G is not yet available in all locations. Second, not all buildings are set up to accept this emerging technology. Third, there have been troublesome health concerns around the type of radiation emitted by the 5G dome. All that said, what exactly is meant by 5G? Think of it as technology through the ages – or in this case, generations: 1G delivered analog voice. 2G introduced digital voice. 3G brought mobile data. 4G LTE revolutionised mobile network capabilities. The 5th Generation is aptly named 5G, able to connect devices to other devices practically in real time. The covered areas, called ‘cells,’ are serviced by individual antennas, which every major telecommunication service provider is deploying. The frequency spectrum of 5G is divided into millimeter wavelengths of mid- and low-band, using a similar frequency range as 4G. Thus, 5G can transmit data up to ten times faster than 4G, reaching speeds of over a gigabit of data per second. The wavelengths have a shorter range even than microwaves,
and therefore the cells are limited to a smaller size. Each cell will have multiple antennas, albeit smaller antennas than with previous generations. These will connect to similar antennas in the paired devices, thus forming a network of data on multiple bitstreams. However, these waves will have difficulty passing through walls and other solid obstructions. As soon as the obstacles and glitches are ironed out, 5G is set to become the new norm in an increasingly tech-based and techreliant world. The possibilities are as boundless as the landscape of human ingenuity, since 5G will be able to support a million devices per square kilometre.
A different kind of welcome
What does this mean for the hotel industry? Of course, hotels are already bustling hives of digital devices buzzing around in hope of connectivity. Properties also face stiff competition for market share, as travellers seek an immersive and unique experience, and are able to shop around for it. The upshot is, a list of hotel amenities these days seems more like character traits on a dating site profile than a reason to lay your head down on a foreign pillow. Some hotels are providing augmented reality experiences to guests while others are using virtual reality to alter the vacation experience to fit the unique diversions of individual travellers. For example, at the InterContinental Shenzhen, AI robots accompany guests to their rooms where 5G cloud-based computers are available for personal use, or for planning and managing the SEPTEMBER 2020

hotel experience from reservations to room service to business meetings. Huawei provides information and communications technology for the hotel, which includes a network to support the many devices and applications running simultaneously in a setting where hundreds of people are in one place. Such information and communication technologies, or ICT, puts the emphasis on telecommunication to deliver a much better technology experience. Highend hotels serving elite customers have long used ICT to become more digital and intelligent. 5G, however, ups that game exponentially, not only creating better connectivity for communications, but also enabling intelligent connectivity using AI, cloud and more. Henn Na Hotel in Tokyo Ginza, for instance, uses robot technology to aid in front desk check-in. In New Orleans, the Marquee Resort by Bluegreen Vacations utilises augmented reality to showcase its cinematic motif, a throwback to the Roaring ‘20s. Besides the period decor, guests can download the Marquee Hotel app and watch the pictures above the headboard come to life through the lens of a hand-held device, as they depict the history of the time period. In addition, large portraits in the hallway adjacent to the elevators

on each floor are triggered by motion sensors to morph from a still portrait to a live motion – and quite seductive – burlesque-era woman beckoning the guest to proceed down the hallway. The integration of these technologies requires seamless transfer of data since many devices might be operating at the same instant throughout the hotel. From the first moment in the hotel lobby, the combination of 5G and AI enables swift check-in and

checkout through facial recognition, which improves service efficiency and security. This is especially important considering recent reports of security lapses in the hospitality industry that have alerted owners and operators to the concerns. The technology available through 5G will help dispel these worries. Robots assigned to the front desk provide information, guide guests within the hotel, and offer delivery services, enhancing guest interaction, service quality and customer satisfaction. Within a hotel room, 5G not only provides guests with faster, more secure Internet access, but can also be used to enhance guest preferences. For instance, CitizenM Hotels allow guests to control their room environment through smart technology. Ambient lighting, images on the TV screen, and privacy settings on window shade controls are just a few applications that will become smoother and more reliable through 5G networks. Likewise, hotels are implementing more advanced video conferencing platforms, interactive communication, and meeting space augmentations. In this way, 5G will meet guest needs for business and entertainment.
TECHNOLOGY OF THINGS
The faster exchanges between devices that 5G allows will redefine the term ‘service’ by addressing requests more expediently. The speed comes from the fact that a network is the caretaker of most of the data exchange, putting less burden on the device itself. This will also increase battery life for the same reason.
Tipping point ahead
Envisioning the future, it’s easy to imagine the aloof autonomy of a world on the borderline between paradise and dystopia. However, there is an in-between space in which 5G networks will allow the hotel experience to cross beyond
the boundaries of the lobby. Communication through apps linked to the hotel extend the experience to the guests’ leisure time activities Video and real time can connect travel agent with clients, hotel with guests and guests with each other. Rental cars are an amenity already offered by many hotels, such as the SLS Hotel in South Beach, FL. Soon enough these vehicles will be autonomous, a technology some experts predict will be the norm as early as 2030. Most major automotive brands have already begun equipping their cars with autonomous technology, which requires cars to be able to communicate with road signs,

pedestrians and each other. Tesla vehicles use an app, and offer connectivity packages as options for its most in-demand features, such as live traffic visualisation, GPS, Bluetooth, long-range cameras, radar and touchscreen controls. In fact, the very viability of autonomous vehicles in general will depend on data reliability and speed. Thus 5G is essential for this technology to be fully accepted and deployed. As the hotel industry continues to adopt fresh ideas and more marketable tools to attract the new traveller cohort and ‘keep up with the Joneses’, it will be technology, connectivity and integration that drives change and better enables properties to offer the personalisation travellers have come to expect. The Fifth Generation of telecommunications will certainly be a game changer for practically every industry, as will the use of robotics, autonomous vehicles and virtual/augmented reality. Indeed, it is a brave new technological world, and the irony of people being better connected yet further isolated can certainly be seen as a bleak omen. Maybe the world at large can take a page from the book of hospitality, which seems to be using this emerging technology to truly break down the walls between us.

frica has its own seasons. From November to April, while many of us in the Northern Hemisphere are donning winter coats and battling sub-zero temperatures, the great plains of the Serengeti are springing to life with fresh green growth on hardy acacias and lofty crotons and flaming red blooms on ubiquitous tulip trees. This is called “the Green Season,” and it contrasts from Africa’s peak safari season, from July to September, in some dramatic ways – making it Africa’s “Secret Season” for the wealth of rare natural treasure to be discovered. Tanzania is a land of Edens within this drama, bringing the wildlife spectacles to be found at Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park in the north as well as the Ruaha and Selous Game Reserves in the south. Lake Manyara frames a vista of exploding pinks against blinding blotches of black and white as flamingoes nest, herons light and zebra, wildebeest and giraffes cool off in the equatorial sun. Mt. Kilimanjaro looms in the distance on a clear day as the highest (19,341-foot) mountain on the continent and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. All of this is within reach of Arusha, fast becoming one of the top MICE locations in Africa. The Arusha International Conference Centre is a spectacular custom-built facility with the capacity to host up to 10,000 delegates. “We are steadily preparing the country for the big time when it comes to business tourism,” says Arusha ICC CEO Elishilia D. Kaaya in an interview with AfricaLive.net. “Arusha is home to some of the most acclaimed natural sites in the world and our center is closely associated with these amazing sites because of our proximity to them. We want people to think about these wonders of the world whenever the Arusha International Conference Centre is mentioned.” The development of the industry in Tanzania will see continued investment in infrastructure and facilities with new conference

centres developing close to the country’s main tourist and business hubs such as Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. For those who want to mix meetings with a magical immersion in Tanzania’s natural beauty, there is no shortage of luxury safaris that can fill the bill. Familiar names include Micato Safaris, African Travel, Collette, Globus, Gate One, Goway, SITA, Intrepid, Tauck, Travcoa and many more. They manage group travel, private travel, super luxury travel, even jet safaris. Choices come into play for level of luxury and lodging rather than animal sightings. In Tanzania, Big Five conquests come with the territory. It’s important to note that in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, many governments advised against all but essential travel to Tanzania. However, as the situation evolves, these advisories are likely to change. At time of press, international flights were operating to and from Tanzania and Emirates resumed services to the capital, Dar es Salaam, on August 1.
SELECT EXPERIENCES
Access to Tanzania has been boosted in recent years by the return of national carrier Air Tanzania in 2016, which was able to establish direct flights from Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Travellers can now fly easily into air fields near Kilimanjaro and the other three national park zones as well as Zanzibar – the Spice Islands, all well worth the exploration. If Tanzania were to delve into the top five reasons to visit, it might look something like this: • Wildlife Safaris: The great migrations, Ngorongoro Crater National Park that is home to the largest volcanic crater on earth with the largest concentration of varied wildlife to be found on the planet – and all this comes with the comforts and luxuries of five-star travel.
A RISING STAR IN TANZ ANIA
TANZANIA 1ON1
In 2019, Elizabeth Mwakajila Ayo was named one of three winners of the Tourism Star Award at the World Tourism Forum Lucerne. She is founder of Elizabeth Women Empowerment Foundation, which supports training women as professional tour guides in Tanzania’s tourism industry.
BTME: Explain a little about why tourism is so important in Tanzania. ELIZABETH: Tanzania’s tourism sector is booming with more than 1.5 million visitors a year contributing in excess of $2.4 billion to our GDP, or about 17.5 per cent. Our many tourism destinations include 22 national parks, like BurigiChato the new park, which our president recently opened. We have Ngorongoro Crater and Kilimanjaro. And no one can forget our beautiful beaches on Zanzibar island. BTME: Why is this female safari guide project important for the country and the women of Tanzania? ELIZABETH: Participation of women in Tanzania’s tourism sector – in particular as tour guides – is very low. Supporting women to participate as tour guides has several different advantages, including
empowering young women and enhancing equal opportunities in the tourism sector. Furthermore, having female tour guides enables tour operators to meet the needs of women travellers who prefer a female guide. It can be embarrassing for a tour operator when clients are looking for a qualified female guide and there is not one available. It is clear that women safari guides are in demand and can make a big impact. BTME: What inspired you to establish the Elizabeth Women Empowerment Foundation? ELIZABETH: I realised that we need to make sure these young girls who live adjacent to the national parks are empowered so they can reach their full potential and rise above the poverty line. So I identified this as one of the projects that will bring the biggest impact. By giving these girls this special training and being safari guides, this will
51
enable them to change their community economically. And these girls will be the best ambassadors of sustainable tourism for Tanzania, and for the whole world. They see the benefit of caring for natural resources, especially the animals, because these girls understand that this is the reason tourists visit our country, and when tourists visit they help raise our GDP. BTME: How will these women fit into the role of tour guide? ELIZABETH: Similar to other sectors, traditionally the tourism sector is dominated by men. Tour guiding in particular has been considered limited to men, because of the demanding experiences out on the roads and in the wilderness. But in practice, women are capable of doing everything that men can do in

the tourism sector, including managing tours and leading activities such as trekking, hiking and mountain climbing. More importantly, women are equally passionate about wildlife, conservation and tourism. Being connected to their traditional settings, women tour guides can describe their culture, history and religion, as well as local geography, topography, flora and fauna, and other natural features found in their environment. Female guides can even be more interesting to passengers by sharing personal stories of their families and their struggles to become a tour guide.
52
BTME: What role will the Elizabeth Women Empowerment Foundation play in growing the number of women tour guides? ELIZABETH: The project aims to support determined young female pioneers from indigenous communities in their quest to become tour guides. Since the tourism sector involves dealing with people from different countries and
cultures, professionalism is very important. Therefore, this project initially intends to support 20 female tour guides per year from the local communities to undertake training that will enable them to become professional tour guides. BTME: Tell us about the support you’ve received for the program. ELIZABETH: When I won Tourism Star Award at the World Tourism Forum Lucerne, I met Mr. Rob Gurney, the CEO of the Oneworld alliance. He was very supportive when he heard about our initiative to raise girls in Tanzania to work in the tourism and travel industry. Rob invited me to New York to see how he and the Oneworld team members could support the foundation. I am so very grateful for the connections we made through Rob and I hope to see many CEOs like him support us. The cost is $6,000 per girl per year. This will support these guides as they receive training in attitudinal changes – to create positive attitude towards

As travel resumes, fresh ideas for luggage and accessories will come along for the ride

THE GOOD LIFE
W
ith global travel at an all-time low, luggage was bound to follow. Brands, such as Away and Samsonite, continue to reel in the wake of the damage wrought by the novel coronavirus as travel bookings saw a near 90 percent plunge. However, those in the know also know that good luggage does not go out of fashion. Well-made travel accessories can outlast pandemics, recessions, shut-downs and delays, and will be ready to roll with stylish ease and inventive efficiency once the going gets going again. At the 2020 Travel Goods conference held in the pre-pandemic days of March, the luggage innovations were out in force offering solutions to travellers who, at the time, were jet-setting more than ever and needing convenient answers from the luxury end, as well as the everyday luggage lines. Whereas in past years, the conference was dominated by smart luggage embedded with trackers, chargers, and drivers that turned bags into handsfree rollies that follow owners around the airport, and other bags that would morph into small transport vehicles with seats, this year’s lot proved to be lower key. The focus was one of usability and functionality rather than splash – which proved to be a good move as countries around the world began to shut down. “We definitely have seen a hit in sales but luckily we offer everyday bags and goods and that has made it easier for us to stay afloat,” said Jacob Durham, co-founder and CEO of Nomatic, a boutique line of smart-looking travel packs, camera bags and roll-on luggage in the midpriced range. “Our mission since we launched in 2014 has been simple: function, innovation and quality, and that has kept us going.” The company backs that up with a no-questions-asked exchange for any
defects and also with an affordable three-year extended warranty that allows easy exchanges for any damage a customer might do to a bag for what basically amounts to the cost of a scone and latte at Starbuck’s. While the company is doing business online and partnering with such companies as Best Buy for distribution, Durham says he sees a shift for this year, although he remains confident that travel will return with force, and with it, the joy "People will be looking of upgrading one’s for the right bags with luggage. the right look, feel and “Pre COVID, our customers were weight, with all the traveling at least every smart pockets in the month if not more. But right place” now as people are not yet comfortable getting on planes, travel is shifting to car trips so investing in bags is not so much on people’s minds. This will change, especially as business travel comes back. Then people will be looking for the right bags with the right look, feel and weight, with all the smart pockets in the right place,” he says. At the travel goods show, several interesting and innovative luggage options stood out from the crowd and could be seen as solutions toward smoothing the discomforts of travel – whatever route that travel might be taking.
kilos that can be viewed while packing is in progress. The key differentiator from other self-weighing luggage is the readout appears as you pack rather than after the process – no need to close, zip, lift and weigh the bag, and then re-pack. The bags come in an assortment of colors in carry-on, mini and large sizes. The hard-shell polycarbonate suitcase is fixed with plenty of extras: A removable battery charging station, an affixed TSA-approved combination lock, durable wheels, easy-grip telescoping luggage handles, and a zippable internal clothing divider with storage compartments. As an extra convenience, the bag comes with a portable coffee tray that fits onto the luggage grip to hold that Starbuck’s and scone while waiting to board. Solution: Briggs & Riley, an independently-owned brand that’s the travel authority in the luggage space with an almost cult-like customer base, offers a patented compressionexpansion tool inside its better carryon bag selections. The engineering allows travellers to expand a bag up to 34 per cent, but then compress it back down to carry-on size. In durable soft or hard cases, the expander is released and pops up to turn the luggage sides into solid expanded walls. The traveler places items inside to create an overstuffed case. The bag is zipped and then the compression design takes over as the bag is easily pushed back into its original carryon dimensions with all the goods inside. Meanwhile, the latest at Briggs & Riley is a series of convenient day and weekend packs under the Delve moniker. “We make solving customers’ problems a fundamental part of everything we do and building products as well as services that can do that is the key to our brand,” said

Or you are taking a cruise and inside the tiny stateroom, luggage either becomes something you eat on or trip over. Solution. The Rollink Flex Earth bills itself as the world’s thinnest suitcase. These items come in neon colours or black with popsicle-hued accents. The hard shell bags offer all the classic dimensions of a regular suitcase but then squish down, accordion style, into a flat surface that is no thicker than the latest Thomas Piketty tome. The bags roll on two wheels and are designed so that a small suitcase can fit flat into a larger suitcase and be popped into action as the need arises. The bags stack neatly into closets or under beds for safe navigation. rollink.com

magnetic strapping design and using separate compression packing cubes. The shells are strong enough to be carried into a war zone or slammed with a sledge hammer, should these occasions arise. Wheels, handles and zippers follow in line. A built in TSA-approved lock keeps items safe, and the strong, balanced product allows for easy luggage stacking and rolling with the help of a three-tier telescoping handle. Other travel accessories include an apparel sleeve for wrinkle-free travel, a vacuum bag that acts as a sort of duffle and then compresses the load by 50 per cent, toiletry bag, packing cubes and a shirt organiser. Customisable backpacks also provide lightweight comfort and organisation. The company is offering comfort-boosting discounts in these COVID times. nomatic.com 5. SOLO The Problem: The world is drowning in discarded plastic bottles. Solution: Solo New York has a bag for that. Solo’s Re:cycled Collection takes discarded plastic bottles, breaks them down, melts them into fiber, and weaves them into stylish gobags, briefcases and backpacks. The company is a sister enterprise with Briggs & Riley and offers a varied line of products and styles to fit the Millennial set in handsome textiles of greys and blacks. Currently, the Re:cycled Collection is available only for the Re:move Duffel, the Re:vive Mini Backpack and the Re:store Tote, but a new robust line of bags are in the offing. solo-ny.com

The polyester blend is waterproof for a convenient answer to storing soiled clothing, liquid containers or bathing suits while traveling. RAIDO LUGGAGE The Problem: Traveling well requires luck and who could not use a boost from some higher powers for a safer, hassle-free trip? The Solution: Raido Luggage, with offices in Miami and Florence, embeds ancient runes into their designs. These are the letters of an ancient Germanic-Etruscan alphabet, the Futhark, each ideographic symbol representing a cosmological power. B A C K G R O U N D The Beaumont is an independently-managed, privately-owned five-star boutique hotel that opened in September 2014. W H A T ’ S I T L I K E ? As I entered the lobby, it oozed quintessentially British opulence in an intimate setting. Enhancing the ambiance were Art Deco-inspired interiors and an Old World charm that struck a chord with the history buff in me. W H E R E I S I T ? Situated in the very
centre of Mayfair, the hotel is within walking distance of Oxford, Bond and Mount Streets; Grosvenor Square; Berkeley Square and Hyde Park. Heathrow Airport is 35 to 55 minutes away and Gatwick Airport is 55 to 90 minutes by road.
R O O M S I stayed in a beautiful Mayfair Suite affording picturesque views of Brown Hart Gardens. Subtle shades bedecked the suite, creating a minimalistic and calming vibe. However, an unmissable sense of grandeur came from the silks, mohair velvets, bronze detailing and rich artworks adoring the suite. Guests staying at the property also have exclusive access to The Cub Room, a relaxing lounge space where they can enjoy a cocktail, coffee and home-made viennoiseries.

F O O D & D R I N K The Old Drift Restaurant is the hotel’s main dining venue, but Kubu, the deck overlooking the Zambezi, serves lunch and dinner too. That’s where we savoured sundowners on our first night before heading for a boma dinner, which was due to take place between the hotel and its sister property, the adjacent AVANI Victoria Falls Resort. Unfortunately, a storm forced us indoors, but we still enjoyed a delicious buffet by the large pool at AVANI; think multiple meat options, crunchy veggies and malva pudding. The next day we ate breakfast and dinner at The Old Drift.
There’s a good chance you’ll see a giraffe or zebra grazing just metres from your room In the evening I opted for Carpaccio of Zambian Beef with Grilled Artichoke and Mexican Salsa, followed by a main of Seared Duck Breast, leaving no space for dessert. Hilton’s CleanStay programme was in full force with the room door sealed with a sticker indicating it had been thoroughly cleaned. The entire hotel demonstrated great attention to the details of the latest coronavirus precautions. The room’s hardwood floors and brick surfaces lend a rustic, yet urbane, feel to the place. Tall, cushioned headboards have built-in reading lights and I appreciated having both power and USB outlets by the bed. Views are of the neighbourhood, courtyard, or of the rolling hills behind the hotel. I was really impressed that the curtains were electronically controlled. Editor’s Note: We visited the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach Resort in early 2020. This review is meant to share our experience so you can plan future travel when you feel safe to do so. The resort closed due to travel restrictions, but has since reopened with ample precautions for guests and staff. Its famous views and hospitality are as enticing as ever.
B A C K G R O U N D Wyndham Grand Rio Mar is the longest running hotel name on the island showcasing its popularity over the decades with visitors. W H E R E I S I T ? Nearly 25 minutes from
San Juan, this resort enjoys beachfront access, two championship golf courses and incredible views without city traffic, noise and crowds.
W H A T ' S I T L I K E ? The staff here has an
unbreakable spirit. Hurricane Maria caused damage to much of the island forcing the resort to close. During this tumultuous time, the hotel stayed open for relief workers, which was one of the many ways that management was able to support its staff. Also during that period of time, the resort underwent a substantial, multi-million dollar renovation that has left it gleaming with modern amenities.
R O O M S The 400 guestrooms and suites sparkle with tiled floors, island-spirited artwork and colours and oversized beds with plush pillows and duvets. Refrigerators, bottled water and coffeemakers with Puerto Rican coffee beans are in all rooms. Bathrooms have enormous lighted mirrors, ample vanity space, and Institut Karité Paris toiletries. Furnished balconies overlook the manicured grounds, pools, two miles of beach, or El Yunque rainforest. Wireless Internet is impressively speedy, which highlights the resort’s focus on balancing

the needs of leisure travellers with those of corporate groups.
F O O D A N D D R I N K With nine restaurants and bars, there are options for every taste. Palio Seafood & Steakhouse prepares elaborate meals with Caribbean flair for dinner. Roots Coastal Kitchen continues the island theme with a menu crafted in collaboration with Top Chef finalists. The farm-to-table dishes use a lot of local ingredients; the coconut curry rice is a must, in my opinion. It also has a
takeaway counter with sandwiches, pizza, salads, coffee and homemade ice cream (the oatmeal flavour was my favourite). Puerto Rican fare is the focus at Iguanas Cocina serving tasty island mofongo and chicken with rice by the golf course. Poolside servers deliver tasty sandwiches, salads and cocktails all day long from the waterfront Tiki Hut.
L E I S U R E Three pools are ringed with lounge chairs beneath swaying palms. It’s worth paying for one of the cabanas that come with greater privacy and refreshments. Besides the sizeable Mandara Spa and fitness center, there are numerous resort activities like rum tastings, salsa lessons, cigar rolling and nature walks. The two championship golf courses draw golfers from around the world to play too. M E E T I N G S The property hosts conventions and incentive groups yearround. Just as important are weddings thanks to a beachfront platform and beautiful garden spaces for outdoor functions (now more popular than ever). Some groups opt for the resort’s allinclusive plan option. V E R D I C T Island paradise, no passport

An easy stroll southward is the River Arno spanned by the ancient Ponte Vecchio Bridge; and a couple of blocks north of the hotel is the Cathedral of Florence with its soaring red-tiled dome, the very emblem of the city.
W H A T ’ S I T L I K E ? The Hotel Savoy dates back to 1893 and in its day was considered a modern marvel. R O O M S The Hotel Savoy’s 80 rooms and suites are generous by city-centre standards, ranging from about 270 sqft up to the new 1,600-sqft Duomo Presidential Suite. My Classic room was spacious, almost what other hotels might call a suite, with a separate sitting room populated by a couple of comfy overstuffed chairs and a sofa facing the flat-screen TV on the wall. The furnishings and appointments were an eclectic mix of clean modern and Tuscan vintage, with fabrics in soothing, inviting colours. The star was the dramatic view out my sitting room window, which was taken up almost entirely with Brunelleschi's famous Duomo and bell tower. The marble-clad bathroom offered a wonderful rainfall shower and a full
complement of Forte Organics bath products. A little personal touch that I found particularly memorable; three monogrammed face towels were rolled and placed to form my initials.
F O O D A N D D R I N K Irene is the name of both the restaurant and bar located on the Savoy’s ground floor. In nice weather, inside seating spills out onto the Piazza della Repubblica, making for a supremely European dining scene. The menu, developed by director of food Michelinstarred Chef Fulvio Pierangelini, features a range of Tuscan dishes, none predictable, all inventive. From the panzanella and buffalo mozzarella (unlike any I’d had before) to the mixed seafood grilled cooked on Himalayan salt stone, everything tasted fresh and creatively presented. SMART TR AVELLER
Project Runway Far from the ‘fly-in’ properties of yesteryear, airport hotels are a breed apart
F 66
or the most part, the reason exhausted road warriors have looked to airport hotels is convenience, but today’s runwayfacing rooms may not be as humdrum as you might remember. Meditation guides and farm-totable dining tell another story. Today hotel brands proliferate around airports. But one in particular led the way. Dubbed the world’s first “fly-in” hotels, Hyatt House kicked off the trend in 1957. Founder Jay Pritzker’s contract to purchase the Hyatt House at Los Angeles International Airport from Dutch businessman Hyatt von Dehn (hence the hotel company’s name today) was said to be scribbled on a hotel cocktail napkin. The convenience of Hyatt House LAX led to several other Hyatt House openings near airports along the West Coast. Soon, other brands followed suit with hotels popping up around airports worldwide. Today, Hyatt House is no longer exclusive to airports. While it recently opened its 100th hotel at California’s San Jose International Airport, its suite-style accommodations with kitchens and living rooms designed for longer stays are located in downtown and suburban locales, too.
CONVENIENCE IS KEY
From the humble beginnings of the first Hyatt House to today’s amenity-laden airport properties, a lot has changed. But proximity and efficiency are still the priority. For example, to reduce wait time, the Hyatt Regency San Francisco installed a locationtracking system for its airport shuttles to keep guests informed when the next one will arrive. The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport, which is directly connected to the terminal, has its own TSA security checkpoint taking SEPTEMBER 2020
ISTOCK/CHANYARITA
WORDS RAMSEY QUBEIN
guests directly from the lobby to their gate. Other hotels connected to airports, like the recently opened art-laden Grand Hyatt at SFO and Grand Hyatt DFW are just a short walk from gates.
21ST CENTURY PERSONALISATION
Today’s traveller wants both convenience and personalisation; bots that offer neither are a Millennial no-no. But if you’re too tired to exchange niceties with someone, robots, apps and digital room keys activated via Bluetooth signal get you from plane to bed with minimal fuss. Chat features like those via the World of Hyatt app allow travellers to text specific requests (like extra towels or a particular view) to a real person without picking up the phone. Some hotels even offer robots to speed up the process.
WORLD-CLASS DINING
Regional culinary experiences aren’t forgotten either. Many hotels are partnering with wellknown chefs or local farmers to elevate what’s on offer at the airport. At Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, Indian restaurant Mr. Todiwala’s Kitchen is under the helm of celebrity chef Cyrus Todiwala. Andaz Delhi operates a 24-hour, farm-totable food hall where every possible menu item is locally sourced. Chefs regularly interview new purveyors, depending upon
the season, to keep the menu fresh. Guests can even personalise their meal by snipping their own produce directly from refrigerated gardens lining the walls. Locals visit the food hall to purchase produce and ingredients and guests can organise their own visit to some of the featured farms.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
The Grand Hyatt at SFO is on its way to becoming the world’s first Zero Net Energy (ZNE) airport campus by 2021. Photovoltaic roof panels, a complex water conservation programme and in-room (boxed) water and toiletry products are among the many elements required to achieve this goal.
MAINTAINING LIFE BAL ANCE
Fitness centres and spas are great, so wellbeing is top of mind for airport hotels too. Hyatt’s Exhale spa brand streams self-improvement content to guest rooms of US Hyatt Place and Hyatt Regency properties. A soon-to-launch alliance with meditation brand Headspace will deliver short meditations, soothing sleep sounds, wellness content and even expert guidance from a former monk to in-house guests via the World of Hyatt app. Airport hotels can deliver plenty of notable amenities plus greater convenience, and sometimes, a lower price.
