SEVEN EMIRATES. ONE DESTINATION

T

he United World Tourism Organisation ranks the UAE among the top 10 fastest growing tourism hotspots in the world. The capital city, Abu Dhabi has been named as the world’s fourth favourite city by research giant Ipsos Mori, while the dynamic emirate of Dubai has won a series of accolades including ‘one of the world’s top 25 destinations’ by TripAdvisor and 2014's ‘must visit destinations’ by New York Times. So what makes the UAE such a fantastic holiday destination? The answers are many. In 2014, the UAE invested nearly Dhs105 billion in the tourism sector. Government reports also suggest that nearly 20 million tourists visited the country last year. Prior to this, an investment of around Dhs92.2 billion earned the UAE the 9th rank in terms of tourism investment in a 2013 World Travel and Tourism Council report, covering 181 countries. The country also came in at 4th position globally and at the top in the Middle East in terms of tourism infrastructure. Simply put, these rankings mean that the country has some of the best facilities for tourists both regionally and globally. An exciting meld of heritage, culture

and contemporary lifestyle captivates, both, the hearts and minds of guests. The brilliant infrastructure and awe-inspiring structures leave tourists wonderstruck while globetrotters and returning guests affirm that the lavish hospitality, delectable cuisine and shopping and leisure options found here are unparalleled. The National Council of Tourism and Antiquities (NCTA) aims to tell the UAE’s extraordinary story to the world. Since 2008, the NCTA, a federal entity, has been consolidating efforts between the tourism authorities of the seven emirates. The maxim, ‘Seven Emirates. One Destination’ aptly sums up the Council’s ambition of establishing the UAE – as a whole – as the leading global tourism hub. The NCTA is also committed to preserving the UAE’s ancient values and heritage. Toward this, the Council coordinates each Emirate’s separate efforts to preserve and maintain the antiquities of the UAE. The NCTA is committed to bringing the world to the UAE. From creating tourism awareness within the country and outside it, to establishing the UAE’s position as a leading cruise hub and sustainable ecotourism base, the NCTA covers every aspect of the nation’s tourism industry.

WELCOME TO THE UAE

I

n the 1950s when the rest of the world was exploring space and New York’s Times Square had been illuminated for decades, the UAE was way behind. But today, its brilliantly lit up cities and roads leave most people awestruck. Not only has the country caught up with the rest of the world in a very short span of time, but it has also raced ahead of all competition. Take for instance the nation’s win of the World Expo 2020 bid. Four years from now, the UAE will host the world’s biggest exposition in 2020. This win is even more significant given the fact that it will be the first Arab country to do so. The UAE has succeeded in creating an enviable and inimitable lifestyle of leisure, luxury and culture for both its residents and visitors. From super yachts to traditional dhows, shopping malls to souks, Michelin–starred cuisines to Arab mezze, convertibles to camels – these amazing contrasts lend the country fascinating exoticism. 10 | visitUAE Tourism Guide 2016

HISTORY Five decades ago, the seven emirates were separate political entities. Known as the Trucial States, they were under British protection. In 1968, when the Britain planned to withdraw its military troops from the Arabian Gulf, these seven states decided to form a federation that would become symbolic of Arab unity. The unification was spearheaded by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, along with Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. On December 2, 1971, rulers of six of the Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman) formally established the federation with Sheikh Zayed as its President and Sheikh Rashid as vice-president. Ras al Khaimah joined the federation on February 10, 1972. The newly founded federal state was officially named Dawlat al Emarat al Arabiyyaal Muttahida or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

ACHIEVEMENTS Since its formation, the UAE has only gone from strength to strength. It is one of the fastest developing nations in the world. Furthermore, the union has earned an outstanding international status and has successfully formed strategic political, economic, commercial, cultural, scientific and educational partnerships with many countries of the world. Today, the UAE has diplomatic relations with 183 countries across six continents. The UAE is at the forefront of international humanitarian work and development aid with the United Nations choosing us as a major hub for its global humanitarian efforts. As a seat of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), a host of the annual World Future Energy Summit and patron of the Zayed Future Energy Prize, it has consolidated its position as a key player in the international renewable energy sector. The nation also boasts the largest space ventures sector in the entire Middle East. Culturally, the UAE is a vital focal point of the Middle East and wider region. Prominent, internationally acclaimed exhibitions are regularly held at Manarat Sa’adiyat. Outposts of the Louvre and Guggenheim will soon open their doors in the capital, Abu Dhabi.

Furthermore, the UAE presents a strong and vivid repertoire of cultural fests each year: Abu Dhabi International Film Festival, Art Season, Dubai International Film Festival, Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Taste of Abu Dhabi, Dubai Food Festival, Sharjah Biennial, Ajman Shahinda Festival and Fujairah International Monodrama Festival to name just a few. These regularly draw in the world’s best talents to the city. It is no surprise then that the UAE has become the region’s art, film, literature and culture hub. Shopping in the UAE is a fabled experience. Think gold, designer labels, souvenirs, bargain hunting and electronics. Here visitors not only have the choice of goods but also the choice of ambience to buy them in: sophisticated malls or bustling traditional souks. For thrill seekers, the UAE is a paradise of many pursuits. From Ferrari World Abu Dhabi to iFly and Iceland, jet skiing, white water rafting and kayaking to dune bashing and skydiving, the options are unlimited. Whatever the budget and taste, we have accommodation choices to suit every traveller. Emirates Palace Hotel, Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Hotels and Kempinski Resorts are renowned globally for their luxurious offerings. But apart from these stellar addresses, each Emirate has made sure to provide stays that will cater to even the most modest traveler without compromising on service. Getting around the UAE is extremely convenient and economical, thanks to its well planned and world class infrastructure. Interactive maps, comprehensive bus routes, easily available taxis and simple car hire procedures make travel across the country absolutely hassle free. While each of the seven Emirates is a destination in itself, a true feel of the UAE can only be had when tourists visit all seven. Each Emirate lends its own colour to the national fabric: Abu Dhabi’s understated elegance, Dubai’s dynamism, Sharjah’s cultural ethos, Ajman’s quietude, Umm Al Quwain’s natural bounties, Ras Al Khaimah’s mountains and Fujairah’s raw rugged beauty. Make the most of nature and technology, shopping and sightseeing, cultural exchange and contemporary living in just one holiday and that too within one country – BE HERE! www.uaetourism.ae |

GOVERNMENT Abu Dhabi prospers under the leadership HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is assisted by the Executive Council, the Emirate’s governing body. Chaired by HH General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Executive Council supervises and looks after the administration of various activities such as economic development, pensions, environment, health, food control, education, culture and heritage, among others.

ECONOMY Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Oil was first discovered in 1952 in Abu Dhabi, onshore petroleum was found in 1960 while the commercial exploitation of petroleum began in 1962. The Emirate is blessed with 95 per cent of the UAE's proven oil reserves and 92 per cent of UAE's gas reserves. Based on current utilisation rates and no additional discoveries, Abu Dhabi's oil reserves will last for 150 years. In spite of its massive oil and gas reserves, the

Emirate has adopted a strategy of branching out into other industrial sectors as well as tourism and aviation. Due to its strategic geographical situation, Abu Dhabi is counted as a window to the whole region and aims to become the Middle East hub for industrial and manufacturing companies. The construction sector is another important contributor to Abu Dhabi's GDP. There is massive government or governmentrelated investments in shipyard, seaport, airport expansions, healthcare, education, major road upgrades and transportation. The Emirate has also undertaken a massive expansion project for its main airport. In recent times, aerospace and defence have emerged as important pillars for Abu Dhabi's diversification plans. The city has been developing specialised economic zones in strategic locations to attract investments.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Abu Dhabi has a well-planned road system and getting around Abu Dhabi is easy. A new interactive map initiative, darb.ae, provides useful information on travel and transport in the Emirate.

Taxis Taxis are reasonably priced and can be flagged down at the roadside or booked by phone through the TransAD hotline 600 535353. The metred street taxis are easily recognised by the yellow roof sign. A tip is not expected but always welcome. Shopping centres have specific taxi stands, and most Abu Dhabi roads are equipped with taxi drop-off / pickup areas. To get to the airport, you can use regular taxis, as well as specially registered airport taxis and limo services, but these can be more expensive. 36 | visitUAE Tourism Guide 2016

It offers an important access to the markets of the Indian sub-continent and East of Africa. Fujairah is the world’s second-largest supplier of bunkering services, fueling ships at sea on a scale lower than only Singapore.
