Manar Abu Dhabi lights up the city…
Rafael Lozeno-Hemmer, Thermal Drift
T
he bustling art scene in Abu Dhabi has come to life with an enchanting art exhibition illuminating the city like never before. Manar Abu Dhabi is a citywide light art exhibition that’s a shining highlight in Public Art Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the capital’s public spaces. Using our city’s gorgeous natural landscapes as a blank canvas, it’s enriching destinations around the capital with breathtaking installations that need to be seen to be believed. And best of all, it’s running until January 30, 2024. The inaugural exhibition is held under the theme Grounding Light, an apt name to showcase the concept of grounding and self-enlightenment and the belief that light is a reflection of our inner selves, body, mind, nature and spirit. The theme is evident in each of the exhibitions on display from the sitespecific commissions to the light sculptures, projections, and immersive artworks. The key locations in the city to marvel at these luminescent showstoppers include Corniche Road and Beach, the Eastern Mangroves, Fahid Island, Jubail Mangrove Park, Lulu Island, Saadiyat Island and Al Samaliyah Island. These Abu Dhabi vistas are already stunning in their own way, but the ‘glow-up’ shines a light on just how beautiful these capital neighbourhoods are. The group exhibition features over 20

local, regional, and international artists, each presenting their own interpretation of the Grounding Light theme. As well as impressive entries from the region, visitors can admire pieces from artists commissioned from Argentina, Germany, France, India, Palestine, the United Kingdom and more. The best news? It’s all free to visit.
Here’s what you can see at this open-air art exhibition change. It is presented in three languages: Arabic, English, and Urdu, set against the beautiful Corniche. Here you will also be able to spot a fourmetre-high sculpture titled Coral Alchemy (Acropora Grove) – which promotes environmental awareness, highlighting the endangered acropora coral species.

T H E ‘G R A M M A BL E There won’t be a struggle to decide if these art displays deserve a spot on your ‘Gram or not. The most stunning art exhibition is a snapshot of the bioluminescent Abu Dhabi beaches called Luciferin Shores. Created merging sound, digital technologies, light and water visitors are treated to an aurora borealis-visuals. The beautiful display will lead you to reflect on the interconnectedness of all living beings. Manar Abu Dhabi even features a drone and light painting show called Chasing the dance of Alfay at the Corniche, offering sky gazers a preview of Saadiyat Island’s stunning architectural future. On Fahid Island, it’s hard to miss monumental land art installation, Self Similar by Jim Denevan, which features 448 pyramids that form a mandala pattern. While it’s a sight to behold when the sun is up, head over at night as the exhibition is illuminated by 432 solar lanterns complete with shadows and warm glows. I N T E R AC T I V E For an interactive experience, head to Lulu Island where Translation Island features 10 large-scale audiovisual multimedia artworks. Beach invites visitors to interact with light to change its properties, a familyfriendly exhibit we are sure the little ones will love. Here, visitors can be hypnotised by a beautiful waterfall thanks to Agua, a large-scale waterfall projection that serves as a full immersion, and treats its viewers to a spiritual cleaning process. The calming visual and audio recordings are a compilation of clips from around the world. T H E T HOUG H T P ROVOK I NG Now, of course, all of these displays are beautiful, but they all come with a deeper message. Take for example, this thoughtprovoking display titled This Horizon Inside Of Us, which reflects on humans’ ability for
A N ODE TO A BU DH A BI Celebrating the history of Abu Dhabi seafaring heritage, the large-scale light installation of dhows titled Flying Ships on Lulu Island celebrates a prized skill that predates pre-oil times. For a more playful journey, explore Dawaran on Eastern Mangroves, a series of artworks focusing on Abu Dhabi’s traditions and cultural practice as you walk along the Eastern Mangroves. Eyes on the Abu Dhabi Chamber Building where you can catch a video projection titled Memories of a Harbor, featuring archival photos of the city’s old and contemporary skylines. For sculpture fans, check out the visual display at The Corniche, Abu Dhabi Viewpoint, which will make old-time dwellers of the UAE reflect on their experience growing up in the country they call home. Showcasing just how much the UAE has offered up to countless number of expats, Directions on Al Samaliyah Island is a circular arrangement of numerical coordinates signifying a land of unity and boundless opportunities. And lastly, Saadiyat Island will be celebrated as a rising cultural district in the making with a display called Rise, with the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum rising in the horizon providing an iconic backdrop.
J UST A DDE D If you’ve ticked off all of these exhibitions, a second series of artworks has been added for the second half of the exhibition, running until January 30, 2024. As part of the exciting new additions, teamLab unveil startling immersive artworks that transport viewers into a world where nature and technology converge in harmony. Another immersive experience you won’t want to miss is One with the Soil, One with the Cloud in Jubail Mangrove Park, which will illuminate the life cycle of mangrove trees through a floating swarm of lights. If the art exhibitions have ignited the spark within you, and want to get creative yourself, there are a number of workshops taking place across the exhibitions to partake in. Additionally, a number of public talks and performances will take place across the city.

EDITOR’S LETTER
WE ALL HAVE OUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESS I’d put budgeting firmly in my weaknesses. I still have a slightly careless, book-the-flight, buy-theshoes, you-only-live-once approach to finances. You do only live once, after all. But better budgeting is one of my 2024 New Year’s resolutions. That, and reducing the seven hours per day of screen time I ashamedly amass. If you’ve not made your New Year’s resolutions yet, head to p47 to let team What’s On inspire you. So, I’m going to be keeping our January issue close as we head into the new year. From p17, we present an array of ideas to keep you having fun in the capital without breaking the bank. Some things don’t cost a dirham. Many more get you change from Dhs50. And all of them will set you back less than Dhs100. Consider this our case that you don’t need to blow the budget to have fun. It’s impossible to head into the new year without talking about how special this one is going to be. It’s set to be a year filled with celebration at What’s On HQ, as we mark a milestone 45 years since our first issue came out in June 1979. It’s hard to believe that even 15 years before I was born, What’s On began bringing residents of the emirates the news, inspiration and happenings they needed to know about. And in the near half century that’s followed, we’ve continued to be at the forefront of what’s new and exciting here in the UAE. To commemorate this remarkable anniversary, we’ll be spending the next 12 months looking back on some of our best bits (take a look on p15), while also bringing you plenty of celebrations along the way. You won’t want to miss a moment of it.

WHAT’S ON Revisiting a brunch icon… Bubbalicious If you ask me about the one brunch everyone needs to go to in Dubai, I always say Bubbalicious. They’ve recently added some luxe elevations like a caviar room, ‘ring for Champagne’ wall, and a concise cooked-to-order menu. It’s the most extensive and decadent offering in the city. @westindubai – Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Adding to my scent collection with the UAE National Day fragrance edition from… flowwow I’m a perfume mega fan and I absolutely adore the fragrance collection from flowwow released for UAE National Day. There are seven bottles in the box, each inspired by the seven emirates in the UAE, and they all have a different scent. My favourites were Sharjah and Fujairah. @flowwow – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Revisiting films that used to terrify me, like… Scary Movie I was recently coerced into watching Scary Movie. As a tween, this film scared the living daylights out of me, but this time around I realised just how ridiculous the franchise really is. Safe to say I will now avoid re-watching them again. Watch it on @netflixmena – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Being happily influenced at… L’ETO Caffe A recurring discussion in my house these past few weeks has been the milk cake at the L’ETO Caffe, because my mother saw it on Instagram and decided she needed to have it her life. I had predicted it would be delicious, and being the genius I am, I was absolutely right. @letocaffe.official – Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter 12 JANUARY 2024 | WHATSON.AE
Unveiling our new podcast… Reborn in Dubai It’s been a team-collaborated labour of love getting the very first What’s On podcast series off the ground and on the air, but you can now listen to the first few episodes wherever you get your podcasts. It’s a series that shares the genesis stories from some of the region’s brightest expat entrepreneurs, thought leaders, community champions, and innovators. Listen on Spotify – Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor, What’s On Dubai
Enjoying a new comic... Eagerly Awaiting your Irrational Response Scott Adams’ own version of an MBA has graced my bookshelf for a long time, and he’s back with his newest collection of Dilbert comic strips, called Eagerly Awaiting your Irrational Response. This time, he has a go at corporate communication practices with all the usual suspects getting in on the action. @bookskinokuniyauae – Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor, What’s On Abu Dhabi
Filling up on pasta at… Signor Sassi I have a very long list of new restaurants in Dubai on my bucket list, and recently ticked London’s famous Signor Sassi, which opened on the Palm in October, off it. If I had to choose my top dishes, I’d say the octopus salad, truffle ravioli, and the Wagyu beef fillet with mushroom sauce were worth the food coma. @signorsassidubai – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter

MAZ HAKIM
ach month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month, we chat to Maz Hakim (@mazzhakim), Virgin Radio’s resident ray of sunshine and host of The Vibe with Maz Hakim. Here she shares some of her top spots that you need on your radar.
My local hidden gem is Çeşme Bazlama Kahvaltı in Al Safa. I first visited Bazlame in Cesme, Turkey, so I was very happy when they opened in Dubai recently. The Turkish breakfast experience is fantastically authentic, with a array of colourful dishes, homemade bread and jam, unlimited tea and gozleme (which is not very good for the waistline but a wonderful experience). @bazlamakahvalti.ae My go to staycation spot is Mövenpick Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khamiah. This hotel is a total slice of paradise – they even imported the sand on the beach from the Maldives, so it feels so silky when you walk barefoot across it. It’s a must-visit place that has a piece of my heart. @movenpickalmarjan
I’ve been to a lot of fancy restaurants, but I return time and again to Bosnian House. I love that I can go wearing my sneakers and sit on the couches on the floor while having the most delicious traditional meal. It’s frills-free and such a wholesome experience. @bosnian.house
Everyone should visit Al Seef when they come to Dubai, it’s particularly wonderful in winter. You feel like you’ve been teleported to a different century. It’s so artistic, so stunning, right by the water. Perfect for instagram or a casual stroll. @alseefdubai
Jumeirah Zabeel Saray’s Talise Spa is my favourite spa. This place is magic and like walking into a Pinterest board. You can spend your entire day here and have a full Ottoman-style spa experience in total luxury. I’ve been going to this spa for 10 years, and I’ve taken a lot of the fluffy slippers home with me! @jumeirahzs

In February 2001, a golfing great graced the cover of What’s On. Ahead of his first time competing at the Dubai Desert Classic that March, Tiger Woods played a starring role on our February cover. World number one at the time, he happily posed Charlie Chaplinstyle for the cover, which I still consider to be one of our best, 550 covers in. That year, Woods lost out on the title to Thomas Björn, a winter resident in the Emirate. But he wasn’t done. Woods would go on to grace the cover of What’s On several more times, including in 2006 and 2008, the two years he claimed the Desert Classic title. I had the pleasure of meeting Tiger Woods on several occasions at the winners reception, as part of Motivate Media Group’s – then known as Motivate Publishing – sponsorship of the event. It’s a partnership that began from the first tournament in 1989 and continues to this day. As What’s On celebrates its milestone 45th anniversary, the Dubai Desert Classic will mark the event’s 35th anniversary in 2024. While it’s been 35 years since the first Dubai Desert Classic, the iconic Emirates Golf Club course on which it’s played first got the green light several years prior. The Tiger Woods

then Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, gave his approval for the development of a grass golf course in the desert in 1986. The innovative project opened two years later in March 1988, paving the way for the establishment of a world-class golf tournament, now known as the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. This year, the tournament will see world number two Rory McIlroy (coincidentally Woods’ successor for the title in 2009) look to defend his 2023 win. He’ll be up against stiff competition though. American Major winner Brian Harman and rising PGA Tour star Cameron Young will both make their debuts at the tournament, while European Ryder Cup stars Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton are both returning to tee it up. The Hero Dubai Desert Classic returns to Emirates Golf Club from January 18 to 21. As always, What’s On is thrilled to be a part of it.

Hamilton hits Abu Dhabi, at last. Here’s how Lin-Manuel Miranda created a revolutionary musical that became one of the greatest shows ever… WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN
WHATSON.AE | JANUARY 2024 25
H A M I LTO N
W
hen Lin-Manuel Miranda started working on Hamilton, he was a budding Broadway songwriter and performer, appearing in his own musical In the Heights, which was inspired in part by his experiences growing up in New York. It was 2009, and Miranda had just read Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founders and early leaders of the United States, and incidentally, also the face on the $10 bill. Miranda performed the song Alexander Hamilton at a showcase sponsored by the White House [Editor’s note: check it out on YouTube immediately] and it’s hard to imagine that anyone in attendance (including Miranda and the Obamas) had any idea of the cultural phenomenon that his musical would become. Six years passed before Hamilton premiered off-Broadway. During this time, Miranda engaged in various projects, such as co-writing songs for Bring It On: The Musical and taking on minor roles in
26 JANUARY 2024 | WHATSON.AE
movies and TV series. However, when Hamilton finally debuted, it propelled Miranda and his colleagues into a new echelon. The play quickly transitioned to Broadway a few months later, with its tickets becoming some of the most sought-after in New York City. Miranda has gone on to work on major Disney movies like Moana and Mary Poppins Returns, as well as the recent revival of The Little Mermaid, with his original Broadway castmates (including Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos and Leslie Odom Jr.) all enjoying serious bumps in the profiles of their stage and screen careers. After its first year on Broadway, Hamilton was nominated for 16 Tony Awards and won 11, including Best Musical. Miranda created something wholly original in a world that is still filled with musicals based on
movies, TV series and other media franchises. Not only did he tell a new story onstage, but he also infused it with a modern, progressive sensibility, both in the music and in its casting. Hamilton’s songs incorporate hip-hop, R&B and soul along with traditional musical theatre styles, and the show is deliberately cast with actors of colour in the roles of white historical figures. “This is the story of America then, told by America now,” Miranda told a US reporter when the play was first gathering acclaim off-Broadway. “It looks like America now.” The music from Hamilton has become its own pop-culture phenomenon, with an album of covers by pop superstars, including Usher, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys (The Hamilton Mixtape). The show is currently in open-ended residencies in Chicago and London in addition to New York, as well as on a North American Tour, UK & Ireland Tour, and a huge international tour all running concurrently. The production stopping at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi stars Jason Arrow as Alexander Hamilton, with Deaundre’ Woods as Aaron Burr and Rachelle Ann Go (the original cast member from London’s West End) as Eliza Hamilton. They’re carrying on a legacy that began in that unassuming moment when Lin-Manuel Miranda first picked up an intriguing historical book. Don’t wait for it. Book your tickets now. January 17 to February 11 Etihad Arena, Yas Bay, Abu Dhabi, doors open 7pm, from Dhs180 (weekdays) and Dhs240 (weekends). etihadarena.ae
HAMILTON’S 7 BEST SONGS
What’s On’s contributing writer – and Hamilton fanatic – Laura Coughlin shares her definitive ranking of its best hits 1. Wait For It Forever on repeat on my Spotify, Lin-Manuel Miranda considers this among the best songs he’s ever written. A stirring, emotionallycharged song from Aaron Burr, the supposed villain of Hamilton. 2. The Schuyler Sisters It’s giving Destiny’s Child circa 2000, introducing the audience to the formidable Schuyler sisters, three women with sharp minds and revolutionary ideas, particularly the eldest, Angelica. 3. Satisfied Speaking of Angelica, this cleverly staged performance sung by the eldest Schuyler sister is probably the most challenging song in the entire musical with witty, wordplay-filled rhyming raps mixed with more traditional powerhouse Broadway ballads. 4. Alexander Hamilton The musical’s opening number traces the tragic events during Hamilton’s upbringing in the Caribbean, then his migration to New York. It introduces the show’s colourful cast of characters, Hamilton’s tireless ambition, and Aaron Burr. 5. You’ll Be Back This is King George III’s comic response to the American Revolution. It’s a chirpy – yet casually homicidal – jaunty hit that’s serving 1960s Brit pop. 6. One Last Time This is a powerful song, and it’s hard to not get choked up as George Washington, the first United States President, seeks Hamilton’s assistance in crafting his now-famous farewell address. 7. Cabinet Battle #1 Only Lin-Manuel Miranda could turn an internal meeting into an electrifying rap battle, complete with George Washington as emcee. Brilliant.

BENJARONG AT THE DUSIT THANI ABU DHABI New menu, new flavours, same Thai excellence
S
tep into the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, and you’re greeted by a multitude of dining options that will only make it harder to decide where to go. Exemplary Thai elegance envelops you as you arrive and make your way through the property to Benjarong, located at the far right amid an incredible Indian concept, a good ol’ Irish pub, and more. This authentic Thai eatery packs in all the flavours you would expect at a five-star Thai dining concept. A revamped menu has greeted guests for weeks now, and we’re eager to unravel

everything it promises. We’re told the term ‘Benjarong’ denotes Royal Thai ceramics; painted porcelain, that was once used to gracefully serve royal cuisine. On that note, we begin our evening with a serving of fresh Gillardeau oysters served with Thai lemon sauce (Dhs80 for three pieces). These are also served in portions of one, but that would be a mistake as this dish compels you to try, a second, third (and perhaps even an eighth, their larger serving size). A second appetiser arrives, the Yum Som-O (Dhs65), pomelo salad with seared scallops, water chestnut, cabbage and
lemon dressing. There’s the lemon again, and it’s added in so well to create a stirring combination with the seafood. We move on to the Tom Kha Pu Thalay (Dhs66), a tangy soup with mushroom, coconut foam and Thai herbs. Don’t think twice if you want to dig around in the foam and devour a spoonful. Next, freshly picked from Benjarong’s seafood aquarium, arrives a Canadian lobster Phad Pong Kraree (Dhs245). The meat is tender and mixed in with native seasoning, celery, onion, and egg. Meaty, flavourful, and quite the catch indeed. We round things off with the Khaow Neaw Mamung (Dhs55), mango done four ways with sweet sticky rice and coconut crème, for dessert. As you exit, you stroll back past the aforementioned culinary offering. Based on this dining experience, we’ll be WHAT’S ON back for more. ith a reservation at their Saturday brunch at White, we arrive at the Jumeirah Saadiyat Island. Descending the stairs to the sprawling resort’s lower level, what we’re introduced to is truly a unique sight to behold in the capital. The chic, multicuisine brunch at the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant is a setting that’s bright and breezy, with indoor dining and an alfresco terrace to choose from. If you prefer to be seated in the comfort of the air-con and stay shaded, you have the option to do just that as bustling service staff are quick to hand you your welcome beverage. If you’ve arrived in boat shoes and prefer to soak in beachside balminess as you down seafood and bubbles, you can opt for that with a seat on the terrace. This is the best of both worlds. With the dining space leading you to an
enticing pool area and the vastness of Saadiyat beach, a supreme spread beckons indoors. Take a detailed tour of the space before you alight at your preferred food station, which will have you burning calories just as quickly as you pile them on with table after table of endless eats on display for you to savour. Craving crabmeat, sashimi, oysters or caviar? Only a table away. Prefer to stick with Mediterranean classics like olive-drenched hummus, falafels, and healthy heaps of incredible salads? Grab some tongs and heap them on. Game for heavier mains like pasta, pizza, South Asian or skewers?
You’ll have your pick. And if that’s not enough, live stations are a mainstay on the capital’s brunch scene, and this one is no different. One thing’s for sure though, you’ll certainly be back at the buffet table for a second plate, if not for a third. Hours slip by as perfectly tanned folk return from the sea, sip on cooling drinks and begin to fill up. AFRICAN LOUNGE BY TASHAS GROUP Intimate indoor dining meets airy alfresco elegance at this Africa-inspired wonder
I
t’s been a couple of months since we brought you the first look of the Abu Dhabi iteration of wildly successful Dubai-born Flamingo Room by tashas. When it opened in Abu Dhabi, it brought with it a reputation of vibrant interiors, sparkling decor, intricate detail and a stirring, vivacious menu, long hailed by our neighbours in Dubai. So, we were just as intrigued, curious, and admittedly impatient to see what the rest of the space had in store. Step forward a new concept for the capital, African Lounge, located just next door. What do you look for when you walk through the doors of a new concept? Is it intimate interiors, a cosy bar and subtle hues that cradle your booth as you sip cocktails? Are you celebrating a special occasion that has you sidling up comfortably in a corner, tucking into delicious portions of healthy creations as you overlook glittering skyscrapers and

moonlit waters? Whichever you seek, step through the doors of African Lounge and that’s exactly what you’ll find. This capital-debuted concept is, in some ways, the stunning antithesis to the neighbouring Flamingo Room. Dark, earthy tones envelop you as you flip page after page of a carefully designed, cleverly crafted drinks and bites menu in a setting that’s best described as maximalist yet sophisticated, where design is as much an undertone as it is an overtone. Abu Dhabi’s island mugginess is melting away when we arrive, and we’re seated at the airy terrace overlooking the picturesque cityscape of Al Maryah Island. Round tables, umbrellas, wildlife-inspired drink glasses. The detail is minute, and we catch all of it. We’re served the grilled bao and spiced butter (Dhs26), and the rich, indulgent Malay latter is guilty of causing us to treat our bread like a main. Several dunks, dabs and nibbles later, delightful and decadent flavours come to life in a second starter, the miso grilled aubergine (Dhs60). We’ve opted to go light this evening, and the service staff enthusiastically guarantee we’ll still be spoiled for choice.
A tastebud-tingling tomato salad (Dhs66) is next, prepared with heirloom tomatoes, flavour-soaked tahini yoghurt, lemon vinaigrette, and a selection of subtle seasonings, making something oh-sosimple taste delightfully complex. Seaside indulgence would be incomplete without a seafood special, and the calamari sosaties (Dhs146) aptly makes its way to our table, with fresh herb salsa, lime aioli and picked red chilli culminating in a heady balance. We bid goodbye to our resolution of going light this evening, and wrap things up with the butternut curry (Dhs58) with crispy kale and tomato chips, and finally the prawn arancini (Dhs58), a hearty seafood special with julienne sambal salad. It’s a well-executed mix of bold flavours. Well-established names on the premium hospitality scene carry stacked statuses, and expanding to newer locations naturally warrants expectations. MEET THE CHEF
ANDREA FIORAVANTI Executive Chef at Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi
You’ve cooked all over the world, where stands out? My special city is Barcelona. It has long been considered a culinary crucible. The city’s markets are bustling hubs where locals and visitors alike come together to explore fresh, seasonal ingredients. As a chef, I’m inspired by the combination of traditional Catalan flavours with innovative and creative approaches to gastronomy. What three ingredients could you not live without? All-purpose flower, tomato, and olive oil. What’s one dish everyone should order at Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi? It’s found in Verso Italian Restaurant, and it’s our signature ‘Tortelli Caprese.’ This dish embodies the authenticity of Italian home cooking, drawing inspiration from fresh Italian flavours. If there was one meal you could pick for your final meal on earth, what would it be? The fettuccine pasta with ragu sauce handmade by my mamma, Agnese. This dish holds a special place in my heart as it embodies the warmth and tradition of our Sunday family gatherings — an integral part of the Italian way of life. @andrea_fioravanti_chef_

Crafty Fox
This relaxed gastropub is all about the laid-back vibes
I
t’s a warm and breezy afternoon that we find ourselves making our way through a throng of patrons engrossed in a game of pool, on to the terrace of Abu Dhabi’s new Crafty Fox location. As various games consume the big screens, there’s a relaxed feel to the atmosphere at this new Yas Links Golf Club venue, with bustling bar staff shuttling between tables. We’re seated at a spot overlooking acres of golfing greenery, gently bobbing water, and the vastness of Yas Island. Our server’s here to help us with our 4pm order. This is generally a tricky time of the day to get your eats in, as we’re straddling lunchtime and sundown. At this gastropub, however, anything goes, anytime. We’re served their Sunshine Mocktail (Dhs37) as we take in the sunset over the course, waiting lens in hand for perfect hues to bathe the golf course. To make the waiting easier, we get a plate of the Korean spring rolls (Dhs35). These are meaty, with slowcooked beef outmuscling Kimchi and a strong aioli aftertaste, all held together by a
crispy outer. WHAT’S ON As meaty as that was, VERDICT we’re far from finished. If a relaxed, We hop from Korea sporty to South America as gastropub with the spicy tuna tacos vast views is (Dhs38) arrive. Don’t what you’ve worry about things ordered, you getting messy as they’re won’t be packed neatly. Diced, disappointed. raw tuna, spicy slaw, avocado and more jostle for your attention before you’re hit with the seemingly sad reality that an order only comes with three tacos. Next we order the shrimp cocktail (Dhs40). Flanked with baby gem, two neatly arranged shrimps arrive and we savour each scoop. Dainty portions, a multitude of flavours, and yet, you’re not waddling out of the Crafty Fox, so you can head downstairs and get your swing on if you fancy a round or two. 7 MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2024 We had some huge box office bangers in 2023. But with the extended writers’ and actors’ strikes that stretched over a decent chunk of the year’s creative window, it’s natural to assume 2024’s flick pickings would be slim by comparison. Fortunately for film fans, there’s a twist... Mean Girls Expected: January This movie has been on my most likely for a sequel/ reboot list for the longest time. In truth, we’re not getting either. It’s a Broadwayfication, once again written by the great Tina Fay (and starring Jenna ‘Beesly’ Fischer as Cady’s mum) and will be the film version of the stage musical that was based on the original movie. Confusing enough (for Karen at least) but it’s still a step shorter than the Matilda adaptation tango – book, movie, musical, Netflix movie. And if that can happen, maybe 2024 might finally be the year ‘fetch’ happens, too.
44 JANUARY 2024 | WHATSON.AE
Argylle Expected: February Before Kingsman (2014), ‘comedy-action spy drama’ wasn’t really a distinct genre (do not Johnny English me), but then Matthew Vaughn came along and changed all that with a ‘manner of filmmaking that maketh big bucks’ at the box office. His latest work, Argylle, has an obnoxiously talented cast: Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa (yep, that Doo-la-pee), John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. It’s the story of an espionage novelist (Howard) whose work seems to eerily parallel the activities of a nefarious organised crime network. Now in the crosshairs of the cabal, an IRL spy (Rockwell) is sent to protect her. And her cat. There’s an obvious Bond reference there, but I’m going to let you do the footwork.
Joker: Folie à Deux Mickey 17 Expected: March It’s been four long years since we last saw directorial work from Oscar-winning Bong Joon-ho and this next notch on his filmography belt (starring Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun) already feels destined for celluloid-al immortality. It’s the adaptation of a highly praised 2022 sci-fi book, Mickey7, which syncs its cybernetic teeth into the subject of uploaded consciousness. Mickey (Pattinson) is on a one-way trip to colonise a distant ice world, a mission fraught with inter-planetary peril. But it’s ok, each time he dies, a new clone is spawned complete with the prior incarnation’s memories. Synthesised immortality in purgatory, sweet.
Expected: October When I first heard that the follow-up to Todd Phillips’s Batman villain origin story, so brilliantly given depth by a sparkling Joaquin Phoenix, was going to be a musical starring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, I thought it was an internet wind-up. An Arthur Fleck-caliber joke. But the more you think about it, the more sense it makes. Where else should you take the story of a tortured, ridiculed incel whose descent into psychopathy is counterbalanced only by his heightening obsession with performance ‘entertainment’? Surreal and macabre song and dance numbers, revelry in the pantomime of chaos – this could quite easily end up as something uniquely wonderful.
The Bikeriders
The Fall Guy Expected: May There’s a place for complicated, cerebral, abstract, arthouse concepts in cinema. There’s also a place for handing former stuntman David ‘John Wick’ Leitch a ton of cash and saying “do some Jason Bourne stuff ”. This movie (based on a 1980s TV series) is firmly of the latter designation, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. It’s about a stuntman (Gosling, and presumably vicariously Leitch – see, action can have art too) who’s tasked with diving into the criminal underworld to track down the movie star he’s been taking falls for. There’s a little romance in there, some comedy, a dog (obviously), and a whole lotta Wick-esque violent schtick.
Expected: June June is shaping up to be a huge month for cinema, with the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, Inside Out 2 and Bad Boys 4 all on track for an early summer release. But this one is different. Inspired by true events, based around a 1967 photobook and starring Jodie ‘Villanelle’ Comer, Austin ‘still sounds like Elvis’ Butler, Tom ‘born in the dark’ Hardy, Michael ‘Zod’ Shannon, and Norman ‘the crossbow’ Reedus, the story shines a light on “the golden age of bikeriders”. A ride-or-die family that operate criminal rackets with a famously blood-soaked moral code. Directed by Jeff ‘Mud’ Nichols, we’re expecting themes of loyalty, brotherhood, and what happens to those who try to quit the gym.
Nosferatu Expected: December Ok, who had a remake of a 1920s silent vampire movie on their 2024 blockbuster Bingo card? Wild, I know, but if anybody can make it work – and maybe add more meat to the pallid bones of this oft-cited ‘masterpiece’ of early cinema – Robert Eggers is the man. Despite a relatively short directorial career, he’s on a rare zero-miss, three-from-three spree (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman). This 2024 project will focus on our titular blood-sucker (Bill Skarsgård) falling for the charms of a young woman (LilyRose Depp). Team Jacob all the way. WHATSON.AE | JANUARY 2024 45

CULTURE IN THE CAPITAL A celebration of culture and creativity as Al Hosn Festival returns
About Qasr Al Hosn This celebrated heritage site is worth a visit any day of the year, even if you are unable to attend the festival. It comprises two major iconic buildings: the Inner Fort, originally constructed in 1795 and the Outer Palace, built from 1939 to 1945. After 11 years of conservation and restoration, the site reopened to the public as a museum in 2018, showcasing the development of Abu Dhabi from a settlement dependent on fishing and pearling back in the 18th century to the buzzing metropolis it is now. Expect to see artefacts and materials dating back as far as 6,000 B.C.
A
bu Dhabi’s own annual celebration of Emirati heritage returns from January 19 to 28. The 10-day festival takes place at one of Abu Dhabi’s oldest heritage sites, Qasr Al Hosn. Al Hosn Festival’s strategic placement, among the bustling Abu Dhabi city centre, and amidst the glittering skyscrapers makes it a perfect spot to celebrate the UAE’s history. From the second you enter the picturesque birthplace of Abu Dhabi’s cultural scene, you’re time-travelling to as far back as 1795. What can you expect at the festival? Visitors will be able to explore Abu Dhabi’s historic traditions and its connections to contemporary and newly emerging cultures. In past editions, residents and visitors to the capital have enjoyed live performances, family workshops, food and beverage stalls, art and cultural exhibitions, immersive trails and much more. For those looking to take a piece of UAE history away with them, there’s a bazaar where you can shop an array of artisans, that have handcrafted thoughtful souvenirs that make for a lasting momento. Fashionistas can also find local retailers showcasing beautiful Emirati fashion. 46 JANUARY 2024 | WHATSON.AE
In years past, there have also been competitions featuring Emirati culinary mastery. In 2023, the competition centred on Qahwa (Arabic coffee), but we will have to wait to see what is in store for 2024. Additionally, the entire lineup of events and timings will be announced via Al Hosn Festival’s social media channels, so be sure to turn on your alerts and keep your eyes peeled. Tickets to the Festival will also go on sale soon, so stay tuned to whatson.ae for updates. Al Hosn Festival, Qasr Al Hosn, Al Hosn, Abu Dhabi, Jan 19 to 28, Dhs30. @alhosnfestival
CULTURE // WHAT’S ON RESOLUTIONS
WHAT’S ON We asked for willpower for Christmas. We didn’t get it, so in the classic ‘new year, new me’ tradition, the What’s On team has set some entirely unrealistic personal goals and self-vetos for 2024. The deputy editor has given each a rating out of 10 for the likelihood of followthrough. Alice Holtham,
Group Editor RESO: reduce my screen time I’ve got a few resolutions this year. Stop biting my nails: a resolution that returns year in, year out. Learn Arabic, beyond the embarrassingly scant few words I’ve picked up in the last near-decade. But my main focus is to spend less time glued to the screen that’s rarely out of my left palm, and more time being present in the real-life things going on around me. ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 2/10
Aarti Saundalkar,
Online Reporter RESO: work-life balance Striking a work-life balance for me is always a struggle. I want more time for me - to read, to exercise, to meet friends, to chill and even get enough sleep. So, this year, I aim to consciously figure out the right balance for me. It may take me some time, and I may fail (a lot) at first, but I am hoping I will get there in the end.
Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter RESO: Taking the bull by the horns I would say I’m already a mildly spontaneous person. But this year I’m going to focus on saying ‘yes’ to even more. Yes, to going to the beach with friends, even though I want to stay in on a weekend. Yes, to taking myself out for drinks or treating myself to a nice dinner. I’m going to let 2024 be a year of yes. I hope.

Miles Buckeridge,
Deputy Editor RESO: quitting the vapes My relationship with nicotine has been a Sovietly-bleak story of toxic codependence. “I need to give this up” he says, taking another puff. But the start of a new year represents perhaps the strongest arbitrary stop date in the calendar. And I’m bringing out the big guns this time: Paul McKenna hypnosis audiobooks and scattered chewing gum stashes.
Dinesh Ramanathan,
Deputy Editor RESO: positivity I’m aiming to adopt more of a glass-half-full mindset. We’re living at a go-go-go pace and sometimes, we forget what we have and how fortunate we are to have it. In 2024, I aim to be more mindful of this and be grateful for what I have, and also give back to the less fortunate. ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING:

Tamara Wright,
Online Reporter RESO: to embrace being four-eyed and fabulous… Despite being told, twice now, that I “must” wear my glasses “at all times” – I seem to be in denial. The thing is, I love a good pair of specs on others, they just get uncomfortable after a while when I wear them. So my mission is to find a spectacular (sorry, couldn’t resist!), comfortable pair that suit my subscription needs, and actually wear them.
Manaal Fatimah,
Junior Online Reporter RESO: stop fruit-dodging As much as I would like to, I just don’t care about fruit. The vegetable stuff, I can do, but if all fruit was wiped from existence tomorrow, it would make absolutely no difference to me. I tolerate the berry and the citrus varieties, so that’s probably where I begin, but some rewiring will be required to start considering those as valid sources of sugar.

S
aadiyat Island sets the stage for three months of mega-music this January with the first ever Saadiyat Nights music festival. And making sure the festival brings the noise from the very first night, the world famous performances begin with Mariah Carey on January 6. The songbird supreme will belt out a string of her best loved hits from the decades, including Hero, One Sweet Day, and Always Be My Baby. Her performance, as with all Saadiyat Nights performances, will take place at a purposebuilt open-air venue on Saadiyat Island, backdropped by the island’s beautiful vistas and cultural institutions. It’s been just over three years since the pop diva last performed in the emirates.
Andrea Bocelli
In October 2019, fans almost broke the internet when a free concert was announced to mark one year until Expo 2020 with a headline performance by Mariah Carey. As she did that evening, Carey will lend her five-octave vocal range to a score of her biggest tracks when she inaugurates Saadiyat Nights on January 6.
Next up, the new musical extravaganza will feature a performance from one of Iran’s most popular musical stars, GooGoosh, who will take to the Saadiyat stage on January 20. Billed as her last tour, it’s a final opportunity for fans to hear GooGoosh perform some of her biggest tracks from the last six decades. Then on January 27, it’s Time To Say Goodbye to the first month of shows on the island with non-other than world renowned Italian tenor
Andrea Bocelli. Returning to Abu Dhabi two years after his last sold-out show in the capital, fans can expect to hear a selection of the celebrated classical artist’s most iconic songs, including Vivo Por Lei, The Prayer and Because We Believe. We’re promised that the three-month musical medley will bring plenty more international and regional talents to the Saadiyat Island shores, so stay tuned for more Saadiyat Nights headliners...

ABU DHABI’S FIRST SAILGP COMES TO TOWN Sailing into the new year at mystical Mina Zayed
SPORT // SAILGP Words: Dinesh Ramanathan
The Abu Dhabi experience
S
ailing enthusiasts in the capital, we have big news for you. Just when we thought Abu Dhabi’s roaring final quarter in 2023 saw the best of global sporting action with a stacked calendar featuring the F1 Grand Prix, UFC 294, NBA pre-season play and much more, the new year is showing no signs of letting up. This month, the capital will host the firstever edition of the Abu Dhabi Sail Grand Prix on January 13 and 14. The heavyweights of sailing will go sail-to-sail during a fierce-two-day contest on the waters of Mina Zayed, gunning for top spot from close to the shore as part of a global championship that also includes iconic locations such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney and St. Tropez. You can watch the world’s most exciting race on water transpire as the global championship features national-level competitors from New Zealand, Australia,
the US, France, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, and Canada. A battle will ensue in short, intense races, with high-tech, high-speed action featuring identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans ripping through the water at speeds approaching 100 km/h.
At Abu Dhabi’s inaugural race, leading attractions will include a first-come, firstserved Waterfront Grandstand that will offer you the ideal vantage point as you experience the thrill of flying catamarans hurtling past at blistering speeds. You can also look forwarded to getting a closeup view of the action on big screens, a food and beverage zone, fan activations and merchandise stands. For those in pursuit of a more premium experience, the Premier Waterfront Grandstand is what you’re looking for, with upgraded seating, premium views, complimentary refreshments, live DJs, and more. If what you desire is an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience, their team-based tours will have you soaking in the action on the water from less than 50m away, with prime positioning at one of the turning gates. Get ready to set sail... Abu Dhabi Sail Grand Prix, Mina Zayed, January 13 and 14, from Dhs330. sailgp.com

Germany GREEN, GREEN
Berlin is emerging as one of the world’s top destinations for eco-tourism. Here’s how to tread its best bits without leaving a heavy footprint
58 JANUARY 2024 | WHATSON.AE
T
ravel. Whatever the reason behind it, business or pleasure, the thrill of experiencing new cultures and cuisines, or just ticking a landmark off your bucket list, we should always consider the impact that travel has on our planet. The buzz surrounding eco-tourism has never been more prominent. And in some destinations, such as the German capital of Berlin, green travel is making exploration of the city’s big-hitting hotspots even more fulfilling.
WHERE TO STAY
Here’s how to get the best out of Berlin, whilst staying green.
DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Lulu Guldsmeden Berlin A number of hotels in Berlin have made the choice to go sustainable. Stay at Lulu Guldsmeden in the heart of the city, where sustainability has always been a priority with huge efforts being directed towards minimising its environmental impact and responsibly managing the resources the hotel relies on. Inside, the hotel and the rooms feature a unique combination of modern design and Nordic-style sleekness. You will find bottles made from recycled plastics which you can take around as you explore Berlin, bamboo toothbrushes, toothpaste tablets, bed linen made from organic cotton, and much more. Incredibly cosy, warm and homey, the rooms are just what you need after a long day of exploring the city’s cultural and culinary spoils. Tucking into a meal at the hotel? Lu Liba serves a fusion of Mediterranean and Lebanese flavours with a unique Guldsmeden twist. All the dishes are made with 100 per cent organic ingredients. Additionally, all food is sourced sans flight and even though the varied menu serves meat, many items can be ordered in vegetarian or vegan versions. At Lu Libar, you can enjoy the local beer, great wine, organic soft drinks, spirits and more. Additionally, any elements from the breakfast buffet is implemented into the a la carte menu, reducing food wastage to nearly zero. If there are any leftovers after that, the scraps are taken and turned into biofuel.
If you want to really feel like a Berliner, few sites embody the city better than Tempelhof Airport. No, we aren’t embarking on an elaborate way of telling you to go home: what was Berlin’s first airport is now a public park. It’s free to enter and is packed with people taking walks, exercising, skating, walking their dogs, or just enjoying me-time. There’s even an urban gardening section in the park, which is owned by residents, where they grow lettuce, carrots, tomatoes and more.
From Dhs450 per night. guldsmedenhotels.com

TRAVEL // GERMANY
WHERE TO EAT Berlin, like any other multicultural cosmopolitan city, is home to a number of cuisines for you to enjoy. And most of them, if not all – can be enjoyed with a vegan twist. Want a guide? Explore the streets of Kreuzberg with Fork & Walk Tours and get ready to be veganised.

Soi and Co For dessert, Soi and Co is a plant-based cafe serving up Instagrammable vegan pastries, ice cream and specialty coffee. Chocolate fans must try the tamari chocolate sponge cake, which is an undoubted highlight on the city’s dessert scene. It’s created by infusing three-year fermented tamari (a type of soy sauce) into the cake creating umami notes, which complement the rich, bitter and sweet, notes of chocolate. @soiandco
momos

For a light bite in-between your Berlin exploration, make a pit stop at momo – a 10-year-old restaurant serving up homemade organic veggie dumplings made with plenty of love. Only certified organic ingredients are used in the preparation, from the veggies to the herbs, but the result is a mouthful of pure goodness. There are eight dumpling filling choices including hot potato, eggplant, chickpeas, mushroom and feta cheese & spinach. There are three dip options to dunk your momos in, and you can pick from a platter of eight, 14 or 18 momos. @momosberlin

Brammibal’s Donuts

Did you know, a vegan diet results in less climate-heating emissions, water pollution and land use. So remember, the next time you’re in Berlin, make it vegan it’s absolutely veg-tastic… 60 JANUARY 2024 | WHATSON.AE
Arrive too late at Wen Cheng and you may just miss out on some of the city’s best homemade Chinese hand pulled noodles. Before even opening its doors, diners are queued up outside the restaurant hoping to get a table at first seating. Hand pulled noodles in homemade stew and a mild chilli oil are plated with the restaurant’s special sauce, coriander and Asian pickles. You can pick your spice levels – spicy (a level two spice level) or Asian spicy (a level three spice level) and if you want more heat, you can add chilli oil. There are beef, lamb and tofu options, or opt for aubergine with soy minced meat for a plant-based alternative. @wencheng_ handpullednoodles
For a lighter sweet treat end to your dining experience, make a beeline to Brammibal’s Donuts. There are six locations around Berlin, and they’ve been serving up vegan handmade gourmet doughnuts and coffee since 2015. The flavours are numerous and there are seasonal flavours too for tucking in with a twist. @brammibalsdonuts
You can find this lively Mexican taqueria in Markthalle Pfefferberg – a food hall in Schönhauser Allee, which serves up delicious mouth-watering tacos. The menu is limited, but crowds of hungry tourists and locals line up for a chance to tuck in. There’s also a vegan version and each bite is packed with freshness and flavour. You can add on as many topings as you like before you run back to the line for seconds. @taqueria_el_oso_berlin
WHERE TO SHOP Love fashion? Walk in style across an environmentally friendly green catwalk decked out in Berlin’s finest handmade sustainable fashionwear.
Meher Kakalia You can spend an hour in Meher Kakalia’s store just admiring the finely crafted shoes, bags and accessories. All of the pieces in Meher’s unique collection stand out with craftwork from the Moghul Kings and Queens era, which is over 400 years old. It has been passed down through the generations and Meher worked closely with these women learning the tricks of the trade. She is now helping keep the craft alive in her ateliers in Berlin and London. In keeping with the theme of sustainability, Meher’s workshop in Karachi operates only in the daylight and uses embellishments spun from plastic waste. @meherkakalia
Trippen Trippen is an unconventional footwear store designed in Berlin born during the early 90s. Each shoe looks different and is created using a sustainable process. This includes using a water-based glue, vegetable tanned leather and other green initiatives. The store is even working intensively on the development of vegan shoes. When you do shop here, you will see a few symbols next to the shoes which showcase if the shoe is undyed, vegetable tanned, metal free, plastic component free, adhesive free and more. @trippen.official
If you’re the sort of traveller that likes to plan ahead, your top itinerary hot spots should include the Bradenburg Gate (though it’s currently under restoration), and the Berlin Cathedral. For art lovers, your trip is not complete without a visit to Museum Island, which is home to five popular museums: the Altes Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode Museum, Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum (also currently under renovation). Humboldt Forum The Humboldt Forum opened its doors in 2021 and is considered the ‘German equivalent’ of the British Museum. It houses nonEuropean collections of the Berlin State Museums, temporary exhibitions and even hosts public events. humboldtforum.org/

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS IN BERLIN
SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL Intercity buses, subways, trams, bicycles, scooters, car sharing – if there’s a sustainable way to get around the city, you’re sure to find it in Berlin. Of course, you can make like a local and walk from one spot to the other. Psst Berliners love to walk, so you’ll fit right in.
Futurium Museum About a 20-minute subway ride away from Museum Island, you will find The Futurium, (also known as the Futurium Museum, or Musée Futurium), a museum focusing on the future. Similar to Dubai’s own Museum of the Future, the innovative exhibit-packed space invites guests to answer the question ‘how do we want to live?’. Visitors can explore many possible futures here and they can participate in open discussions or even try out their own ideas in the super fun, hands-on Futurium Lab. futurium.de/

Address Beach Resort Fujairah A beach break that ticks all the boxes on the East Coast… LOCATION If complete seclusion is what you’re after, Address Beach Resort Fujairah is calling your name. Located around a 90-minute drive from Dubai, it swaps the sounds of traffic and general city life for the calming lap of Gulf waves and views of the rocky Hajar Mountains at its idyllic east coast Address.
LOOK AND FEEL The drive in might be longer than the average commute, but it’s picturesque, and any tired feelings evaporate at the door with a warm welcome in the airy lobby, and that signature Address scent wafting through the air. The hotel is just seven floors tall, forgoing the skyscraping heights its sister properties in Dubai tend to favour to make the most of the mountain vistas.

ROOMS
FOOD AND DRINK
Pick from mountain view rooms, pool view rooms, ocean view rooms, and even a suite that sleeps up to eight. As for the aesthetics, the rooms are adorned in blue, beige and white hues bringing an extension of the outdoor natural elements to the interiors. Oh-so cosy beds are perfectly springy to sink into and doze off on, which is exactly what we did after a blissful afternoon at the resort.
Although SALiA is primarily a beachside seafood restaurant, where you can dine on the fresh catch of the day, you can also find great steaks and pasta on the menu. Our favourite dish was the confit calamari, a pan-fried dish swimming in a lemony buttery sauce with a great punch of Emirati spices. The staff here go the extra mile to really make your night special. As with all other Address hotel venues, you’ll find The Restaurant where you can fuel up at breakfast for the day ahead, be it filled with water-based adrenaline pumping activities, or the drive back home. If you choose to bask by the pool, there’s The Pool Lounge, which serves up a dazzling selection of refreshing beverages, attractive snacks, healthy salads, aromatic pizza and more.
FACILITIES The hotel is home to cascading pools for both little ones and adults, plus a private stretch of beach that encourages visitors to make the most of the stunning surrounds with a day on the sand. For those seeking more adventurous activities, Al Boom Water Sports Club at the property will be able to sign you up for wakeboarding, windsurfing or diving. For adults looking to further relax, there’s a lovely spa that offers pampering treatments like hammams, facials or manicures. For those who can’t afford to miss gym-time, the well-equipped fitness centre is open 24/7 with views of the beach to pump you up.
RATES Prices for a one-night stay in a deluxe mountain view king room with breakfast start from Dhs700 for two people. Address Beach Resort Fujairah, Al Aqah, Fujairah. Tel: (0)9 204 7777. addresshotels.com
