Who are you, and what’s made you UAE famous?

I’m the founder of That Dubai Girl, a platform for supporting women, giving advice and championing local businesses.

What started as an inclusive social media community for all women in the UAE has grown into a thriving mini ecosystem of like-minded small businesses and entrepreneurs, which is based on mutual support and big thinkers.

Why did you start That Dubai Girl and what’s with the name?

I’m sure most young people in Dubai can relate to some of the cliquiness that inevitably results from a buzzing social scene like we have here.

Women want to be respected and supported, yet we still face criticism from other women – particularly on social media. I’d had enough and

What stresses you out about the UAE? As a small business owner, I’m someone who wants everything done yesterday!

When I need to do a task, I’m immediately working at breakneck speed to get it done. Everyone’s different and I understand that I can’t always expect everyone to be as 100 miles an hour as I am! Maybe I could be more patient, but no one’s perfect. I’ve had to learn to adjust and, luckily, I have an incredible support network to help, especially my TDG team!

Do you reckon Dubai is your forever home?

My friends have a running joke that I’m going to be an old lady, retired on a yacht in Dubai Marina called ‘That Dubai Girl’. Al Ain Camel Market

You’ll find this dromedary expo about 15 minutes outside of downtown Al Ain. The camel is of central importance to the UAE story, and their trade still takes place in these bustling market places today. Lucky guests might get the opportunity to see camels flexing their A-game in demonstrations of racing pedigree. You’ll have to brave some pretty formidable scents, but it’s rare to find examples of traditional Middle Eastern life, this authentic and open to the public. It also affords a perhaps unmatched opportunity to catch a candid camel selfie. a Al Ain, daily 6am to 7pm (although most of the trading happens first thing). visitabudhabi.ae

Al Ain Palace Museum

Al Ain Oasis This 1,200-hectare desert oasis is found in the middle of Al Ain and attained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011. It contains more than 147,000 date palms, trees bearing mangos, oranges, bananas, figs and jujube. With its whimsical shaded pathways beneath fractal canopies it’s a place that provides a shuddering contrast to the urban jungle of Abu Dhabi’s cityscape. If you fancy a trek round it, you can also swing by the Eastern Fort on the edge of the property, it was completed around 1910 by the late Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed. There’s also an Eco-Centre that offers insight into the conservation efforts at the oasis, and a look back at its history. a Al Ain, open daily 9am to 5pm. This re-instated fort was once home to the Founding Father of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who lived here before moving to Abu Dhabi in 1966.

The Bedouin-style structure houses a culturally immersive experience of life in the emirate before the discovery of oil, exhibits that give insights into the origin story of the Founding Father, and a room devoted to the Holy Quran, including teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), inscribed on the ceiling. a Al Ain, open daily 10am to 6pm, free.

Church and Monastery of Sir Bani Yas

Al Jahili Fort Home to exhibitions, surrounded by lush gardens and representing an entrancing architectural aesthetic, this Al Ain fort won a Terra Award for Internal Design and Layout in 2016. It was originally built at the end of the 19th century, on the orders of the ruling Al Nahyan family.

There’s currently one permanent exhibition running at the fort, a celebration of the adventures of Sir Wilfred Thesiger (also known as Mubarak bin Landan, ‘Blessed One of London’), who made multiple crossings of the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), in the 1940s. a Al Ain, open daily 10am to 6pm (Fri 2pm to 6pm), free. Al Qattara Arts Centre Housed in a traditional mudbrick ‘BinʿAti Al-Darmaki’ tower house, the mission of this Al Ain-baed arts centre is to both provide a stage for the creative works of locally-based talent, and a place to create it. Inside you’ll find art, archaeological and heritage exhibits; studios for music, handicrafts, drawing and painting; workshopping space; a digital room for photography; and a calligraphy studio. Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa Once the home of the late Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, father-in-law to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founding Father of the UAE — Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa has been renovated and transformed into a cultural community centre in Al Ain. Its new role is to provide a space for community arts, crafts and creativity. An integral element of the centre’s identity, Al Ain Theatre has established a permanent hub here, offering artistic and cultural events and workshops. a Al Ain, daily 10am to 8pm (Fri 2pm to 10pm), free. Originally discovered in 1992, the Church and Monastery of Sir Bani Yas is now available to visit for those willing to make the trip to the island. The site is located on the eastern side of Sir Bani Yas and is 1,400 years old, making it the oldest Christian site in the UAE. The complex is said to have housed about 30 monks and included a church, a courtyard, a kitchen and dormitories where the monks prayed and slept.

Etihad Modern Art Gallery A modern home for modern UAE creativity. This art-flex nexus contains a diverse collection of exciting work from international and locallybased artists, The gallery also has a calendar packed with special limited-time exhibitions. Heritage Village Get a taste of life before the skyscrapers and vibey beach clubs at this recreation of a traditional Emirati village, conveniently located next to Marina Mall on the edge of the city. Conceived by the Emirates Heritage Club, you can catch local artisans demonstrating their skills in metalwork, pottery, weaving and glassblowing. Hili Archeological Park This site contains the largest collection of tombs and buildings from the Bronze and Iron Ages, to be found in the UAE. Jebel Hafeet Tombs Another important archaeological site in Abu Dhabi, these 5,000-year-old tombs date from the very dawn of the Bronze Age. This necropolis is home to 500 or so rocky coffins, each made from mounds of unworked stone. Within the grounds of the tombs, several objects of interest were excavated, including ceramic vessels and items forged from copper. One of the best ways to learn about and experience these tombs is by joining up with a guided tour from the nearby Jebel Hafit Desert Park. a Al Ain. Tel: (03) 711 8362. jebelhafitdesertpark.com

One of the most significant cultural spaces in the region, this gallery-museum is the Middle Eastern sister of the original Parisian Louvre. Beautiful on the outside as well as in, the Jean Nouvel-designed structure opened in 2017 and has been beguiling visitors with its cleverly curated collection of artworks and objects of historical curiosity ever since. Manarat Al Saadiyat The name when translated into English from Arabic means ‘a place of enlightenment’. Manarat Al Saadiyat is the hang space of choice for a cool selection of temporary and more permanent curations. The annual Abu Dhabi Art fair is held here, there’s an epic outdoor events terrace, a café and brasserie, three galleries, a photography studio, an art studio, a 250-seat auditorium and gift shop. For those that like their art up high and their beats down low — current exhibition Contact High, charts the history of hip hop through some rare photography and an illuminating sample of rap-paraphernalia. a Saadiyat Island, daily 10am to 8pm, exhibition entrance fee Dhs30 per person. Tickets to visit the Presidential Palace of the Nation are just Dhs60 for adults (Dhs30 for kids), and once inside you can gawp at the epic architecture, visit the great hall and dive into the story behind the birth of the nation. You can also catch the popular Palace in Motion Sound and Light show, which takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Qasr Al Hosn One of the most important cultural centres in the whole of the UAE, Qasr Al Hosn is a national monument. Once the seat of the nation’s government, a home to the Al Nahyan family and the site of a national archive — the fort and watchtower (which dates to around 1790) now looks over its role as historian for the UAE. Qasr Al Muwaiji The permanent exhibition at Al Ain Palace, Qasr Al Muwaiji is housed in a gorgeous glass building in the main site’s courtyard. Here you’ll be told the origin story of the palace and its most famous former resident, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The Founder’s Memorial The capital’s stunning Founder’s Memorial is a tribute to the “life, legacy and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan”, founding father of the UAE. One of the world’s largest mosques, this inspirational building was commissioned

by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and was completed in just over a decade. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has space for 40,000 worshipers each day and pulls design features from Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan and Egypt, and other Islamic countries. It’s a little hard to spot as the signage isn’t great but seek it out and be rewarded with excellent service and amazing food that’s unbelievably inexpensive.

Even if the waitstaff don’t speak your language, don’t let that stop you from trying it. While it may be intimidating to not know ‘how to do’ a cuisine, your curiosity is appreciated and will be rewarded.

You may even find some curiosity-seeking diners stepping up to help you with the menu. After all, this may be their national cuisine, and they’re passionate enough about it to help. So, don’t be too shy to ask a perfect stranger for advice.

MONTAUK BOUTIQUE CAFÉ AND RESTAURANT A taste of Long Island arrives in Al Bateen

uch like the cheery pilgrimages that well-heeled New Yorkers take to the tip of Long Island, Montauk Boutique Café and Restaurant in Abu Dhabi has the feel of a seaside retreat conveniently located in the city.

Known for its breakfasts, the café’s menu and timings are adapted for Ramadan.

Nevertheless, we arrived for a late lunch or early dinner – whatever you want to call it – and discovered a gem of a spot.

The décor is breezy, beachy and bohemian, and the menu is just what you’d be looking for if you were sitting in the sun, by the sea and desperately seeking

a refreshing and light meal. Even if you rarely take note of décor, you’ll notice the artistry here. Thoughtful details prevail in everything from the comfy furniture to the menu illustration and artwork to even the ever-present Covid-19 dividers that, here, somehow don’t feel that invasive.

The salads are fantastic. We were swift to dig right into the sumptuous burrata salad’s (Dhs89) complementing orange slices and basil dressing. Though it’s everything you already love in a burrata, it’s even more thanks in part to its flavour foils, and a darling eyedropper’s generous drizzle of a balsamic reduction. You may even find yourself munching the last sprouty garnishes just to let the flavour profile linger.

The spicy lemon butter tiger prawns (Dhs75) and Montauk black Angus sliders (Dhs80) also didn’t disappoint.

Though not spicy in any way to which we’re accustomed, the tender prawns were bathed in sauce that was subtle with the right amount of spice so as not to trample over the seafood’s salinity. What’s becoming the usual charcoal bun didn’t feel kitsch like it does elsewhere. The ‘zingy sauce’, as it’s called on the menu, was harmonising, if a bit too mayonnaise ladened, and the unusual addition of the soujuk (a dry, spicy sausage) added a smack of a certain something that was simply nice and good.

VERDICT: Like a cherished memory of a beachside spot where you stop after a long drive, Montauk will either start or finish your day on just the right note. The food is artistic without trying. REVEAL: SIDDHARTA BUDDHA BAR ABU DHABI Capital Motion, the team behind Siddharta Lounge Abu Dhabi by Buddha Bar, says that it’ll be a “dazzling rooftop playground complete with a Mediterranean menu, clever mixology, jaw-dropping views and state-of-art concept events.” Big statement. But judging by the success of its counterpart in Dubai, it should live up to the hype. We’ve also heard rumblings of two more exciting Buddha Bar concepts making their way to Yas Bay. FACT: MAZAJ BAB AL BAHR The new restaurant in Fairmont Bab Al Bahr specialises in dishing up delicacies from the library of Lebanese-Mediterranean cuisine, flame-grilled with flair.

Signature dishes include kebabs, manakish, kunaffa, baklava and aromatic hot and cold mezze. Redevelopment plans have placed an important focus on the alfresco section of the restaurant. The beach garden area has space for 149 guests, in a chic wood-framed network of cabana-like structures. The restaurant’s celebration of refined traditional craftsmanship quite literally begins at the door – the main entrance is framed by an ornate 3.3 metre-high, three-century-old gateway. RUMOUR: CAFE DEL MAR The original Balearic apres-rave hub, Cafe Del Mar, is the stuff of Ibizan legend.

During its 40-year non-stop party manifesto, it launched an uncountable number of ‘chilled house’ playlists, hosted almost every DJ hall-of-famer, and established itself as an essential strand of the tapestry of the Ibiza music phenomenon. New Cafe Del Mar venues have sprung up in Phuket, Tenerife, mainland Spain, and there’s even one offering warm welcomes and fond farewells at Ibiza Airport. Back in 2015, there was a UAE location penciled in for Dubai, which sadly never got the greenlight, but our neighbour’s loss is likely our gain. The word on the grapevine is that its next Cafe Del Mar adventure will be right here in the capital, at the new Yas Bay development.

IDIN ASMITHA Executive Chef at Anantara Eastern Mangroves I was 12 years old when I first joined my mother in the kitchen preparing chicken porridge. That’s when I found my passion. Even now when I cook porridge, the memory of it makes me smile.

My home country is Indonesia.

I have been living in the Middle East for 20 years.

I work a 14-hour day. It all starts with the daily morning briefing, coordinating the activities of the cooks. During the day, I frequently visit the kitchens for inspection and oversee the operations to ensure food quality and presentation.

My greatest achievement was back in 2007 during Ramadan. I was the head chef in one of the five-star hotels in Dubai. At the time, I worked up to 18 hours a day together with a team of 15 chefs serving 5,000 covers a day per outlet. It resulted in a recordbreaking Dhs10million food revenue that month.

For non-Muslims, it marks a wonderful opportunity to embrace the culture here by partaking in iftar, too. And, if you like culinary surprises, the cooking collab at the Abu Dhabi Edition between Michelinstarred chef Tom Aikens and local chef Mohamad Orfali will wow you.

Other hotel buffets can leave you with a sense of deja-vu that you will not have here. This buffet is attractive and not so gauche as to pile up mountains of food that may go uneaten.

The live stations prepare only what’s ordered in keeping with Market’s dedication to sustainability.

True to his Michelin stars, Aikens delivers a superstar dish in the za’atar spice rubbed chicken breast. Zesty yet juicy, the addition of za’atar can gum up the works but not with this chicken dish; it was triumphant. You can barely refer to the bulghur bed upon which the chicken rested as a ‘side dish’.

Its citrus seasoning glinted through the delicate grains, allowing this supporting dish to be so much more than the sum of its parts.

Mohamad Orfali offered what he calls a ‘Come with me to Aleppo’ beef kebabs with sour cherry ketchup alongside his ‘Roots of My Backyard Forest’ slow-roasted baby carrots served atop walnut muhammara and yoghurt sauce. He had us at the poetic names, but the carrot starter was surprisingly the stunner.

The masterstroke of this iftar is the entire dessert buffet, specifically the Edition’s Arabian ice cream and gelato selection. You may not ordinarily save room for dessert, but here you must.

Choose between flavours like toffee popcorn, smoked apple, watermelon and chilli, beetroot and rose and coconut sorbet. Standouts were the popcorn, beetroot and watermelon and chilli sorbet. If you can’t decide, you don’t have to commit to just one, they offer a platter of small bites of every flavour if you ask.

VERDICT: Leave it to the Edition to bring us iftar that we won’t soon forget.

I’ve always had a natural affinity for coffee. My family have loved it for generations.

Some of my fondest memories are listening to my late grandfather, who’d tell us his life story while sipping on a cup of fragrant, freshly brewed Arabic coffee.

coffee beans to generate other sources of revenue. We also launched Nabtih, (meaning plant). It’s a new initiative to reduce waste associated with harvesting and distribution of coffee by recycling and repurposing its byproducts.

Welcome to the orient noveau in Jumeirah e were optimistic about Mimi Kakushi from the start. It’s run by the same people behind celebrated French restaurant La Cantine du Faubourg, casual Portuguese spot Lana Lusa, the What’s On award-winning Middle Eastern restaurant Ninive, and Twiggy, easily 2021’s most exciting opening to date. Adding a new notch to its gastronomic belt is this, a fun yet fancy Japanese restaurant perched just above Coya at the Four Seasons Jumeirah Restaurant Village.

Design-wise, Mimi Kakushi packs a visual punch. A clandestine entrance leads you up a flight of stairs and through a closed door. Once inside, welcome to 1920s Osaka, a glamorous homage to the

avant-garde oriental era, with a sultry amalgamation of big round leather booths, a large mahogany-esque bar with a cool jazz soundtrack playing in the background.

The new venue also has major people-watching potential – we spotted a few of Dubai’s social elite sampling the goods when we visited. All of this added up to a fair amount of gawping, but we soon snapped out of it when the food started to arrive.

A selection of small dishes left us struggling to decide if we preferred the silky miso marinated black cod gyoza (Dhs85) or the rich Wagyu and foie gras dumplings (Dhs70) – both with their glorious pouches made with the best slippery silken casings – until the unimpeachable quality of their greaseless tiger prawn tempura (Dhs90) arrived and quickly became the winner.

The smashed hamachi (Dhs86) makes all other hamachi’s look like a first draft with its lip-smacking, sweet and tangy

mix of garlic yuzu soy continuing far beyond what feels decent.

The main course of braised short ribs with sweet garlic soy, ginger wasabi relish and pistachio (Dhs395) was another spectacular hit, so tender and juicy you’ll wish you had left more room to enjoy it.

We skipped desserts in favour of the drinks menu, which had extensive sake lists and eclectic bottles of grape, but a reasonable choice by the glass. As ever at these places, the bill racks up faster than a Land Cruiser down Sheikh Zayed Road.

An unassuming, authentic Japanese eatery in Barsha… ou’d be forgiven if the recent opening of Wawa Dining flew under your radar. Unlike its flashy competitors, Japanese restaurant Wawa chose a more modest launch approach. This, along with its paired-back interiors, is what attracted us to the concept in the first place.

Found in Golden Tulip Al Barsha, guests will face geisha printed curtains and a small dark passageway before entering the venue. It’s an izakaya (a casual Japanese bar), making it a fun afterwork hangout spot.

There aren’t too many other guests on our visit, but the ones that are there are Japanese – a sure fire sign of authenticity.

The menu splits between starters, sushi, noodles, seafood and signature dishes.

Most of the plates are small and ideal for sharing. We’re intrigued by the deep fried tofu (Dhs47). Five parcels of batter filled with creamy tofu arrive with a fresh sweet chili jam on top. They’re tasty and nicely combine both crispy and soft textures.

We’re told the salmon carpaccio (Dhs56) is a must try and gladly oblige. It’s a

refreshing dish, with orange segments and truffle ponzu. Gyoza is usually a winner in any Japanese restaurant but Wawa’s is exceptional enough to tempt us for a second helping. It’s filled with Osaka beef (Dhs56) and drizzled in teriyaki sauce before being topped with thin and crispy onion strips.

We order the volcano maki (Dhs53) on the promise that it’s ‘not too spicy’, but we would’ve enjoyed its fiery sauce on the side

as the rolls were completely coated in spicy aioli, overpowering everything else.

Currently the only option for dessert is flavoured mochi ice cream, so we opted for another gyoza instead.

Each dish is beautifully presented in a fine-dining style you’d expect in any contemporary DIFC bar, which is surprising given its casual vibe. Price wise, the dishes aren’t too far off it’s fine-dining competitors, but if casual, unpretentious dining is what you’re looking for, then follow Dubai’s Japanese crowd and head to Wawa. a Wawa, Golden Tulip, Al Barsha, daily 12pm to 3pm, 6pm to 12am. e’ve hit the art jackpot, the art motherlode, the art Shangri-La, and there’s no turning back. Until June 30, Mall of the Emirates will host the world’s largest collection of recreated Banksy art. ‘The World of Banksy - The Immersive Experience’ is devoted to the world-famous street artist, and reveals over 120 works spread

throughout the gallery at The Theatre.

The reproductions of graphic murals will enable visitors to rediscover iconic pieces, including Girl with a Balloon, the Flower Thrower, the Mobile Lovers, and many other works by Banksy.

The exhibition is set up on the basis of the geographical distribution of Banksy’s works. The countries covered are the UK, the US, France, Canada, Australia, and Mali.

With very little known about the mysterious street artist, Banksy’s

recreated exhibitions are eagerly attended by art lovers across the world keen to learn more about the enigmatic figure. ‘The World of Banksy’ will offer insight into the work, influences and inspiration of the artist, giving local art enthusiasts the opportunity to get up, close and personal with his work.

e’re not sure if you’re aware, but Abu Dhabi is a pretty big deal in the film industry. It’s established itself as a shoot location of note for both Hollywood and Bollywood, most recently hosting the cast of the upcoming seventh installment of the Mission Impossible franchise.

The emirate’s role in cinema hasn’t been restricted to a passive backdrop of wallflower either. The number of UAE-made films has steadily been increasing over the past four decades, and some of its finest examples have

won international attention.

Emirati filmmaker Sheikha Alyazia bint Nahyan’s short film about the pre-Islamic poet Tarafa, entitled Athel, released last year, for example, was selected for five international film competitions, winning commendations at the Berlin Flash Film Festival and the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.

But a UAE-producedand-shot Hollywood movie has always been the bigger picture. And it’s coming into sharp focus with the release of The Misfits this summer.

The Misfits stars Academy Award nominee Tim Roth and ex-007 lethal-licensee, Pierce Brosnan, and is the story of a gentleman thief preparing for a big heist that could ultimately save thousands of innocent lives.

It’s a film created by FilmGate Productions, an Emirati-owned production company, in partnership with Paramount Pictures and the US wing of Highland Film Group. It was also filmed entirely in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking about this giant leap for UAE filmkind, Emirati producer, director, and writer Mansoor AlDhaheri (who you may remember from The Platform) said: “When we started FilmGate Productions, our goal was clear: put Abu Dhabi on the global entertainment map and show the world what we’re truly capable of.

“Today, we are proud to say that FilmGate has produced, filmed and financed a Hollywood movie from start to finish right in the heart of our capital, and partnered with industry

leaders such as Paramount Pictures and Highland Film Group to bring it to audiences everywhere.”

The Misfits also stars Jamie Chung (The Hangover franchise), Hermione Corfield (Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation), and Nick Cannon. Saudi sensation

Flash Entertainment continues its quest to champion musical talent in the region

or the third month of Regional Artist Spotlight, we stay in Saudi Arabia to celebrate the first female artist on Flash Entertainment’s dedicated platform: Saudi rap artist Jara.

Jara is one of the kingdom’s only female rappers and her music is taking the region by storm.

Rapping in English, Arabic and Swedish, Jara’s vibe is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Through her music, lyrics and self-expression, Jara is paving her own path in the urban hip hop scene.

In defiance of categorisation and arbitrary labels, she aims to tell fearless tales in the face of change. Jara is in the midst of putting the final touches to Diggity – a new song, which will be released soon. Her latest track, 966, a reference to the kingdom’s telephone code, was released to celebrate Saudi National Day in true Jara style…

Regional Artist Spotlight ONE TO WATCH: JARA How did you first get into music?

It was by chance and very unexpected, to be honest.

Unlike most of the artists I know, I was never really a big hip hop head – I actually started listening to rap pretty late. When I first moved to Sweden a few years ago that’s when it started. I guess the solitude I dealt with there got me 52_What’s On

come up with two or three songs. Most of the time, I’m usually looking for inspiration so whenever something hits me I’d always keep a note of it for later. In terms of the actual process, it’s always just me and myself. I prefer being alone because that’s when I come up with my best work.

Where have you performed?

I’ve done a few small performances in Jeddah, Riyadh and Stockholm. I’m sure being on huge stages

“MUSIC IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST HAVING SOMETHING TO BOP YOUR HEARD TO – IT’S ABOUT MOVING PEOPLE” into writing everything I was feeling. Then it just evolved, from me just talking to myself in my head, to me talking out loud, to freestyling, and flowing and it kind of just happened.

How would you describe the music that you make?

I’m still in the process of exploring different genres and styles right now, and I’m trying to push myself out of my comfort zone.

I think the music I make, and will make, will always keep evolving. I’m always adapting, morphing and shifting into different versions of myself and whatever mood I’m feeling at the time definitely translates through my music. So, I would say the music I make is pretty diverse and always susceptible to change.

Who are the artists, or people, who inspire you?

Since making music for me is more about the messages and power it holds, I listen to other artists like Joyner

Lucas, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and NF. I try to focus on their lyrical word play and try to absorb that knowledge and channel it through my art. Music is about more than just having something to bop your heard to – it’s about moving people and using your platform for a greater purpose.

What are your latest musical accomplishments?

I’m currently shooting my upcoming music video for Diggity, which will be out Eid 2021. Other than that, I would say being a part of Spotify’s Sawtik campaign for female artists and being on billboards all around the MENA region was pretty dope.

What is your creative process like? Has it changed since the pandemic?

I would say my process varies. Sometimes I would sit alone for a few hours, play instrumentals/beats and

would be a whole other experience.

What are your latest releases?

My latest release was a song I made for Saudi National day, 966. The whole

message behind it was to highlight the diversity and show the fusion of cultures and races we have here. It’s my way of debunking the stereotypical assumptions people have about Saudi. I really wanted to merge the underground urban scene with the more cultural parts of Saudi.

What does your involvement in the Regional Artist Spotlight mean to you?

Honestly, it’s beyond surreal.

It usually takes me a while to let things sink in and I’m mad honoured and grateful to get this exposure and support for real.

n the UAE, popular hikes like Wadi Showka tend to be one-day adventures. But there are a plethora of amazing nature excursions in and around the UAE, scattered across our surrounding mountains and wadis, that could be explored for days.

Ready to make that a reality is Highlander adventure. The brand was created in Croatia in 2017 with the intention of producing premium hiking experiences for nature lovers around the world and, from November, will be operating in Ras Al Khaimah. The route The hike begins at the Wadi Ghalilah Dam, through the rocky wadi bed before the notoriously challenging, albeit immensely rewarding, climb of Stairway To Heaven, right to the summit. After this huge accomplishment on day one, you will camp under the stars at the UAE’s highest spot, Camp 1770, named so after its height above sea level. Here you can catch up with fellow trekkers, exchange stories and tales around camp fires and enjoy the most spectacular sunset.

The following days will have you winding down along the ridge on the western side of the mountain, with breathtaking views of the rugged cliffs to

one side and the glistening coast on the other. You will discover unbeaten paths that have never been experienced before and pass picturesque mountain villages where time has stood still and you can observe the ancient civilisation.

Things to consider before joining To participate in Highlander55 or the Highlander Experience, there are a few requirements to consider beforehand. All hikers must bring – and carry – their own equipment such as sleeping bags, tents, stoves and cutlery. Nine meals and water will be provided over three days, but you need to bring your own snacks. There are daily checkpoints that must be reached, with time limits to adhere to, and although this is not a race, you will need to collect the checkpoint stamps in order to receive your completion certification and badge. As Highlander is dedicated to the preservation of nature and sustainability, littering and fire lighting are strictly forbidden.

ave you ever wanted to wake up to an African dawn? Or dreamt of seeing gazelle nibbling the grass metres in front of where you sit with your morning cuppa, or watching a giraffe lazily munching the top of a tree just a few metres further away?

Well, you can do all that at a place that’s only a road trip away.

Many UAE residents are often surprised to learn that Abu Dhabi has a remote island housing 11,000 wild animals.

Those who are in the know about Sir Bani Yas, however, will already appreciate the unique characteristics that make a 3.5-hour trip to the island feel more like a Kenyan escape than a staycation in the capital.

The island itself is bigger than Abu Dhabi city, coming in at 87 Sq Km – that’s equal to 378 Bluewaters Islands. The three available resorts are all operated by Anantara. There’s Desert Islands Resort, and two types of villas: Al Sahel Resort has lodges in the forest, while Al Yamm Resort has villas on the beach.

What’s On recently spent two nights at Al Yamm Resort (Dhs1,520 per night).

The first thing to note is that the resorts are open to all guests, allowing you to explore each hotel, its pools, and restaurants as you please.

However, due to the size of the island, there are drivers to take

you between each upon your request.

right next to you. Peacocks are common too, and more than happy to show off their mesmerising iridescent trains.

Al Yamm Resort’s rooms look out onto the mangroves and have sun loungers as well as an outdoor deck to relax and take in the serene setting.

The villa has plenty of space inside, with a passagewaystyle bathroom, leading to a separate shower guarded by swinging saloon doors.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas provides an extensive list of activities to keep you busy throughout your stay.

As with any safari, there’s a little luck involved but we managed to catch a glimpse of cheetahs and get up close and personal with a friendly giraffe from within our open-top Land Cruiser. Other pursuits available include archery, kayaking and horse riding.

The cultural and historical tour (Dhs295 per person) stops off at some of the archaeological sites on the island, including a cemetery of the Bani Yas tribe, which lived on the island from 1800 to 1935.

Olio is Al Yamm’s signature restaurant – an endearing Italian spot directly next to the beach. Enjoying breakfast here while watching the waves crash into the shore has to be one of the best ways to start a day.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Abu Dhabi, take the E11 towards Tarif and Mirfa. Take Exit 113 and follow signs to Jabel Dhanna Jetty, and then Sir Bani Yas Island. A 20-minute ferry boat ride takes you to the resort.

Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers has a reputation for delivering on its promise of luxury. With a huge portfolio of awardwinning restaurants, a spa, beach club and Gulf-facing infinity pool, it ticks a lot of those top holiday boxes. But how does it compare as a destination for families?

The location Hollywood big-shots, the Etihad Towers represent some of the most cinematic components of Abu Dhabi’s spire-studded skyline. Found at the western edge of the Corniche’s golden shoreline, and just a short walk away from the Presidential Palace, these hyper-modern monoliths occupy capital real estate.

The look and feel There’s nothing understated here.

Opulence and splendor are deservedly on full and unashamed display from the lobby to the 74th floor observation deck.

Design touches such as the grand artwork and marbled facades are clear markers of class, but there’s also a warmth to it. It’s an aspect mirrored in the service of the resort staff, who retained all professionalism even when faced with the decorum fail of a four-year-old skidding across the reception area in their socks.

The facilities Gastronomy is a big reason to visit this hotel with 12 excellent restaurants and bars on site, and importantly most of them are actively family friendly. There’s a large dedicated children’s pool and a sheltered play area for the kids. Plenty of traditional bucket and spade fun can be had on the beach, and if parents need an escape, the spa has 13 treatment rooms.

The rooms This is what really elevated the whole ‘family experience’ for us. We stayed in a King Premier Family Room with a View, and it was one of the best-equipped setups for kids and grown-ups as a unit we’ve experienced in the UAE. It’s separated into two bedrooms and sleeps up to five people in total. It also features a collection of engaging wooden toys, books (in English and Arabic) and games. The in-room tent was a bedtime gamechanger – it’s amazing how much easier the lights out tango becomes when choreographed to the beat of a (climate controlled) camping trip.

The food and drinks The dozen varied restaurants at Conrad ensure that even the fussiest of palates are

catered for. And what a collection of eateries it is — Nahaam, Li Beirut, Tori No Su, Sole, VaKaVa and more. It’s often the case that allday-diners become overshadowed by their glossier, nichey neighbours — but visiting Rosewater for breakfast was a hugely enjoyable family meal in its own right.
