AS DEPUTY EDITOR MILES REMINDS ME OFTEN…
You spend more time with your work colleagues than you do with your spouse. At least awake. And I don’t mean to brag, but I rather hit the jackpot with mine. Which makes this – my last editor’s letter – all the more bitersweet. So rather than dedicating it to what’s in the pages, I’m going to take a moment to appreciate the people behind them. Because as I reflect on the seven years that have passed since I first tumbled through the doors of What’s On as a driven but rather naïve junior writer, it’s the people that stick out, as much as the incredible experiences. Yes, I’ve interviewed A-Listers, confronted my biggest fears in zip lines and human sling shots, and eaten my way around hundreds of restaurants all in the name of critical reporting.
But it’s the BTS brilliance I’ve cherished. The on-duty LOLs, the outtakes, and the creative magic reserved for the lucky few - past and present - that get to be a part of this brilliant brand, that really make it so special. The talented reporters and editors, the passionate videographers and photographers, our hard working support team, all unified in their dedication What’s On.
But I must also pay tribute to our wonderful readers. Over the years I’ve read hundreds of emails, comments and DMs. You’ve trusted our opinions, you’ve corrected us, you’ve called us out, but largely you’ve supported the vision I’ve had for What’s On over the last few years, and I’m enormously grateful to have seen record numbers of you reading the magazine, visiting the website, and following us on social media.
What’s On has always served as that in-the-know friend to guide you through life in the UAE. And as I pass the baton to its next custodian, I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn.
Enjoy the issue,

Talking ‘bout a
We asked for willpower for Christmas. We didn’t get it, so in the classic ‘new year, new me’ tradition, the What’s On team has set some entirely unrealistic personal goals and self-vetos for 2025. The deputy editor has given each a rating out of 10 for the likelihood of followthrough.

RESO: Learn Arabic
I’ve said this for almost a decade – but this really is the year my Arabic extends beyond Inshallah and Yalla. I’m signing up for the Eton Instiitute’s starter course from December 30, getting my New Year’s resolution started two days early. Just call me an overachiever.

RESO: An attitude of gratitude
I have so much to be grateful for. But I do not appreciate this enough, and I find myself often envying others. This has to stop. So in 2025 I am going to maintain a gratitude diary logging whatever I am thankful for. Making it a digital version so it’s accessible to me at all times.

RESO: Stretching myself
This year, I’m focusing on making stretching breaks a habit – often small and overlooked as the day gets busy, yet impactful in reducing stress, preventing discomfort, and improving overall well-being.

RESO: More time to do physical health, like wall Pilates
Since I’m not getting any younger, I will put more time into improving my physical health. I’ll commit to do a regular exercise like wall Pilates, which I really like to try even just twice a week to start with just to keep my bones working.

RESO: Be better at staying in touch
129.1257. 359. These aren’t map coordinates. Those are, respectively, the numbers of unread messages on my WhatsApp, Gmail and Outlook inboxes. I selfticket this behavior as it just being the unavoidable object impermanence of ADHD, but that doesn’t make me a better friend. So in 2025 I’m going to work on this fault, I’m going to reach out, check in, and chip away at those unread messages. I’m sorry, I love you, I hope you’re OK.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 2/10

RESO:
Rediscovering my love for creative writing
There was a time when I used to write just for myself, and I still do, but my resolution for the new year is to get back into writing what feeds my soul. I want to do my best to make time to write more fiction, more stories that make me happy.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 7/10
Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor
RESO: Go on a health kick
To make a better effort to live a healthy lifestyle. It’s common to slip during the festive season, and while I can make excuses to myself, I can’t make any to the scales or to the mirror. So I hope to get back to adopting a cleaner, fitter lifestyle – and not just until Jan 5.
ED’S BELIEVABILITY RATING: 5/10
Madie Murphy, Senior Reporter
RESO: Getting clinical with my cosmetic routines
I never stick to New Year’s resolutions, so don’t hold me accountable. My aim this year is to consistently wash my makeup brushes. I mean, they aren’t growing mould or anything but the bacteria on them can’t be good for my skin. Don’t judge, especially because I know you’re pretending those brushes don’t have 862 layers of foundation on them.

Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Team AngelWolf
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Nick from Team AngelWolf (@teamangelwolf) the inspiring social impact organisation; dedicated to promoting community inclusion. Here he shares some of his favourite spots that you need on your radar.
With the dynamics of our life, it is truly hard to properly switch off, but the best way to do this for us, is to go for a family walk with our dog, Luna. It instantly puts us into a different mindset. So, we often take her for a walk around The Sustainable City, as there are some lovely walks there or we go to the desert with her and explore. Just being in nature helps us to switch off.
We like to find relaxed and friendly places to go as a family, where Rio is comfortable and feels welcomed. And we’re vegan, so need good options for that, too. Some of our favourite hidden gem cafe spots to pop to, are Spill The Beans (at The Sustainable City) and New Earth Cafe (at Al Barari)they are both dog friendly, so can take our dog, Luna, with us, too. @spillthebeancoffee, @newearth.cafe
@oceanichotel
As we race every weekend it’s wonderful when we get to travel to new and different places in UAE. One of our favourite events is the Oceanic Triathlon, at Oceanic Hotel in Khorfakkan. It is a great race, but the bonus is spending some time in Khorfakkan. It is such a stunning part of the UAE with mountains, beaches, dam, historical sites, lots of lovely little hidden restaurants and cafes, and lots of sporting activities - definitely worth a visit.
Head to YouTube and search for the song “Chasing Dreams by Team AngelWolf”. Like the UAE, Team AngelWolf has a strong foundation of family, community, teamwork and togetherness. We wanted to spread a message about community inclusion and thought the best way was through music. This was a two-year project, involving 50 people (with and without disabilities) who shared their expertise and time for free, to create the most beautiful music video with a special message. Our wish is that watching it will help us all and give us a feeling of hope.
Triathlon is our sport; so, we like to find scenic and accessible places to train. We live in The Sustainable City, where there are some stunning facilities. We also like to cycle in Al Qudra, open water swim at Jumeriah beaches and run along the beach tracks. We also train at Wellfit Gym in Meydan, as it’s great for Rio to get a variety of sensory environments.
@thesustainablecity, @wellfit
It can be challenging to find nice restaurants that are accessible, where Rio is embraced, and we all feel relaxed. As a family we love visiting SEVA Table (in Jumeriah 1) for some truly spectacular vegan food. For Rio’s 21st we were in Abu Dhabi and were taken to Cipriani at Yas Island for some amazing Italian food. And then an old favourite, and a real treat, Zuma in DIFC for modern Japanese cuisine.

Sing along under a sky full of stars…
ast year was no slouch in terms of phenomenal musical acts wowing the UAE capital. We’re only just recovering from one of the best performances Abu Dhabi’s seen with Eminem’s high-energy show at Etihad Park during Formula One weekend. In November, we had Diljit Dosanjh rack up record numbers here, and the month prior, pop legends Backstreet Boys returned for an encore on their DNA World Tour. And right as we dove into the summer, The Scorpions blew the roof off the Etihad Arena in May, especially with that drum solo.
But 2025 won’t just pick up from where the year prior left off, it’s about to hit a whole new note with the Coldplay coming to town. One of the most influential music groups in history, their concerts never fail to draw an ocean of fans, and as enjoyable as their tracks tend to be, Chris Martin and Co. have established a repertoire for putting on a peerless visual treat with arena-wide light shows and thousands upon thousands of glowing Xylobands painting a picture that must make it on your bucket list, if it hasn’t already.
WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAMME…
In the third week of September, it was announced Coldplay would be bringing their record-busting Music of the Spheres tour to Abu Dhabi in January 2025, with the UAE capital added to their touring schedule for a special GCC exclusive. What records, you ask? The tour’s sold 10 million tickets worldwide, with the band playing in Australia through Q4 after a packed European summer schedule, and will jet to Mumbai, Hong Kong, Seoul and the United Kingdom after setting Abu Dhabi alight with LED-laced euphoria.
When Coldplay announced their highly anticipated Music of the Spheres show in Abu Dhabi, the excitement was palpable and very soon, out of control. Fans across the UAE, GCC and even South Asia put their lives on hold (no exaggeration) for several hours, and days, to try and snap up tickets to the show. WhatsApp and Instagram DMs didn’t begin with “Hey”, “What’s Up?” or “Hola” anymore, everyone just did a Ctrl + V on “Did you get tickets to Coldplay?”. Fans were placed on mile-long queues, but there was no whining – just hoping. They flooded the ticketing site patiently, which as you would’ve guessed, caused the system to crash, leaving Coldplay loyalists, newbies, and FOMO-feelers

Known for their electrifying, soul-stirring performances and timeless hits that invariably become household tunes, the Grammy Award-winning group were initially only scheduled to play in the capital on Saturday, January 11 at Zayed Sports City. That soon turned into a second, third and fourth show, with unprecedented demand resulting in fan frenzy that required January 9, 12 and 14 to be added to their touring schedule –bringing us a whole week of Coldplay in the capital. A special number of Infinity tickets were also released to make the shows accessible to more fans.
WHAT MAKES COLDPLAY SO SPECIAL?
The UK band’s legacy is marked by their incredible influence on both contemporary music and pop culture, as well as their lasting impact on the music industry. Over nearly three decades, they’ve etched a place for themselves on the charts as one of the most successful and significant bands of this century (and while we’re only a silver jubilee in, we don’t see that changing anytime in the next 75 years). If you asked someone what genre Coldplay belonged to, chances are you wouldn’t receive a point-blank response, and that’s because the supergroup have successfully transcended the limitations of their initial alternative rock style by tactfully integrating pop, electronica, orchestral and world music elements into their sounds – think Hymn for the Weekend. And let’s not even begin on their incredible music videos, that have racked up their own record numbers online and in terms of TV viewership (Speed of Sound a la summer of 2005 comes to mind instantly).
They’re a little bit of everything, and a whole lot of legacy.
But we’re not just fanboying or fangirling. Coldplay is also one of the best-selling music groups in the world, with over 100 million albums sold to date. They guarantee a superhit, or five, when they put out an album as they dominate charts, radiowaves and casual conversation, and make it on everyone and their uncle’s list of things to experience before they kick the bucket. Albums such as Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011), and A Head Full of Dreams (2015) have become cultural phenomena, and have been acclaimed for their insurmountable reach across generations, age groups and continents.
On its way is a mesmerising show, to say the least. Like we briefly mentioned before, a Coldplay concert is as much of a visual spectacle as it is a musical treat. Their live shows are renowned for their spectacular light displays, which’ve unsurprisingly become one of the defining features of their sell-out performances. They achieve this with wearable LED bracelets that are handed out to every concert-goer, known as Xylobands – something that’s become a keepsake for people that’ve been to a Coldplay show (we’re guilty of this, ourselves). Lights flash, pulse, change colours, and even form patterns across the audience, amplifying the emotional impact of the music – now imagine that with a capacity crowd in attendance, singing along to some of the most popular tracks in music history. You can visualise it all you want, but you’ll need to be there to see it and feel it. Add in innovative lighting design, arena-style jumbotron screens, jaw-dropping visuals and supreme stage effects – yes, we weren’t kidding when we said you need to add this show to your bucket list.
If you meant the music, you can expect all of their greatest hits and more. Head to Zayed Sports City this January for a setlist that will likely include a thrilling mix of classics such as Sky Full of Stars, Hymn for the Weekend, Yellow, Clocks, Fix You, Speed of Sound, and newer tracks from Music of the Spheres, including My Universe and Higher Power. Soultouching tear-jerkers, near-depressing melodies and high-energy, evergreen classics will have you feeling a rush of adrenaline, euphoria, and collective energy that, irrespective of our literary excellence, is difficult to define in print. All we can say is, you’ll need to be along for the ride as the band explores themes of love, hope, human connection and life itself.
The Coldplay announcement just underlines how Abu Dhabi is turning into an entertainment and cultural behemoth in the UAE, region, and globally. Exciting times ahead= for the capital city – but for now, it’s showtime, baby…

SREADY, SET, SUSHISAMBA
It’s been a much-anticipated restaurant on the capital’s dining scene, and finally SUSHISAMBA is here. Here’s why it was worth the wait…
ome restaurants just have instant impact. They get the tri-factor of design, cuisine, and ambience so perfectly on-point that an entire city drops its knives and forks and makes reservations right away. Such was the impact of SUSHISAMBA Dubai. The venue is renowned for its Insta-breaking decor, jaw-dropping views, and menu of *chef kiss* Japanese, Peruvian and Brazilian fusion dishes. And since opening its doors in November 2021, it’s consistently impressed. whether you’re here for its business lunch, monthly brunches, a date night dinner, or in the hope that you might spot a royal dining adjacent to you, you know you’ll still get that exact award-winning formula.
Which is what has made its Abu Dhabi debut, at the Conrad Abu Dhabi
Etihad Towers, all the more exciting. Where Dubai’s culinary scene is wellversed in the kind of high-octane dining SUSHISAMBA has made its name in, the capital’s fun-dining scene can anticipate something entirely new, with the arrival of SUSHISAMBA Abu Dhabi.
Promising show-stopping décor and vibrant flavour from the very start, guests are welcomed into an entrance laced with lush greenery, inviting you to retreat from the urban jungle and modern neutral architecture of the city, into SUSHISAMBA Abu Dhabi’s maximalist world.
Guests are led into the main restaurant, which seats 100, and is a space filled with rich textures, lush greenery, and beautiful textiles that have been designed to be touched. An open-style kitchen features sushi and robata grill counters, where up to eight guests can marvel at the chefs at work.
Of course the Dubai venue’s soaring height on the 51st floor of the Palm Tower means it boasts panoramic city views. While Abu Dhabi’s iteration might not be set so high – it does have its own alluring vistas from an alfresco terrace, something entirely new for SUSHISAMBA in the UAE. Here, touches of SUSHISAMBA’s signature orange and lush foliage are scattered across the curved terrace, which gazes out over the scenic corniche and towards the stretching sea. Still to come, a second floor will house further exciting culinary experiences.
The menu is a master list of contemporary and prettily plated dishes that honour Japan, Peru and Brazil. Masterminded by culinary dirctor Kyung Soo Moon, who’s been with SUSHISAMBA since the Dubai opening, the menu promises premium ingredients and bold flavours in classic dishes like Peruvian Anticuchos, Chilean seabass, and an array of signature sushi and sashimi. Those familiar with the Dubai menu will also be pleased to see favourites like the flavour-packed sea bream ceviche, melt-in the-mouth black cod, and those unmistakable Japanese doughnuts make their way to the capital.
SUSHISAMBA Abu Dhabi, Podium 1, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi, 6pm to 1am Sun to Weds, 6pm to 2am Thurs to Sat. Tel: (0)2 811 5882. @sushisambaabudhabi
5 MINUTES WITH… KYUNG SOO MOON
Are there any Abu Dhabi exclusive dishes to look forward to?
As part of our global tradition, each SUSHISAMBA location from around the world features its own SAMBA roll. To pay tribute to Abu Dhabi, we have created The Wagyu Dhabi maki, a Wagyu sushi inspired by the city and injected with a touch of creativity.
What’s your favourite dish on the menu?
My all-time favourite dish, which is also one of our best sellers, is the Chilean Seabass Anticuchos. We describe this dish as our
“marshmallow” as it is so soft, and full of flavour with a bit of sweetness and smoke from the robata grill.
What’s your favourite part of the new venue?
The layout of the space. It’s way smaller than Dubai which gives it an intimacy and cosyness. It’s also great that this venue has an outdoor terrace, as the SUSHISAMBA experience in the open air has a completely different feeling.

BROOKLYN CHOP HOUSE AT W ABU DHABI
Flagging off race weekend with an exciting new opening…
When we heard W Abu Dhabi was bringing a duo of new concepts to town before 2024 was out, we were excited to say the least. The glittering Yas venue, known for its trackside views and race-themed brunches, opened Brooklyn Chop House Abu Dhabi right as we welcomed Formula One weekend this December, bringing with it a slice of New York cool. The launch resembled a nightclub opening, red carpet and all – and we were excited to see what lay behind the doors. Did we mention this was an existing steakhouse brand? The iconic brand makes its way to the UAE capital from the Big Apple, but with a fun twist that includes a very real Asian influence on an exciting menu. While the original location is reportedly a hit with A-listers from the US entertainment scene, the Abu Dhabi iteration is already beginning to make a mark with A-list flavours and a gorgeous
ambiance that is equal parts fine dining and laid-back cool. Even before you enter the premises, you’re introduced to hints of NY like red brick on the walls, and if you choose to dine on their terrace, you’ll feel that signature Yas excitement in the air as you’re bathed in the light of standing butane lamps.
Voyaging across their diverse menu, we spot everything from premium selections such as their melt-in-yourmouth Australian wagyu steak and grilled lamb rack, to popular Asian bites that we begin our meal with like the Kung Pao chicken (Dhs100) and fabulous dim sum. While the former is all you expect with its signature spice and tangy flavour, the latter is presented in multiple hues, all created with natural ingredients – think beets for the red dumplings. We try an
offbeat pick in the Impossible burger dumpling (Dhs60), and these green, meat-free bites do not disappoint.
While we’re on the fence about forgoing a mouthwatering steak for their Peking duck (Dhs390), a dish that was heavily recommended to us, we see why. It’s as much about showmanship as it is about authentic Asian flavours, and if you’re beginning to wonder whether this is a New York steakhouse that serves Asian food, you wouldn’t be wrong – they do both cuisines incredibly well. And that’s a conclusion we arrive at, rolling slices of finely-sliced duck into traditonal pancakes, topped off with fresh accompaniments and a dash of duck sauce.
For dessert, we stick with the tried and tested cheesecake (Dhs60), except this one is served with a pistachio filling that’s guaranteed to surprise, charm and have you returning clean crockery. Top it off with a shot of espresso (Dhs30), and you’re already planning your next visit.
Brooklyn Chop House, W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island, Tues to Sun 6pm to 11pm.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Watch authentic Asian flavours meet Empire City elegance beautifully, in a stunning Yas Island setting.

STRAWFIRE BY ROSS SHONHAN
Savour the flavours of Warayaki cooking here…
One of Abu Dhabi’s most exciting restaurant openings of 2024 happened in November, as celebrity chef Ross Shonhan lifted the curtains on his stunning new venue at Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. The venue introduces Abu Dhabi’s diners to the flavours of Warayaki, a traditional Japanese cooking technique native to the country’s Kochi prefecture, ramping up the UAE capital’s standing as a growing culinary hub nationally, regionally and globally.
LOOK AND FEEL
Automatic doors make way for an absolute visual treat that is the Tsukimi Lounge, which reflects a full moon harvest scene, before you find yourself giving in to the charms of a dimly lit, intimate, yet spacey main dining area. On your way to finding a table, enjoy views of its open grill centre stage and golden drapery that symbolise dancing flames, setting the stage for a truly
unique and memorable dining experience in Abu Dhabi.
Your experience at Strawfire will include live entertainment, with a DJ playing Jazzy House and NU Disco. On Fridays and Saturdays, a live jazz band accompanies the DJ.
PRIVATE DINING
Like several of the capital’s fine dining restaurants, Strawfire’s private dining room is truly one to experience. The Toyama private dining room’s walls and ceiling are covered with hand-painted silk, inspired by Japanese artwork, including a gold leaf-embellished 17th-century masterpiece, “In and Around the Capital”, and scenes of rural life depicted in works by artists Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai.
FOOD
Our servers explain to us that in Japan, Warayaki cooking involves the preparation of food in strawfired flames, which allows your dishes to be infused with a distinct smokiness. Strawfire’s carefully-curated menu features a selection
of dishes that highlight fresh ingredients cooked over the open flame, so be prepared to choose from their à la carte selection, a signature tasting menu, or the chef’s Omakase menu, which has already proven a great hit with diners.
Strawfire’s menu is a delightful sensory voyage, and if you’re new to wood-fired cooking, these are smoky flavours like none you’ve tried prior. Whether it’s sushi picks like their hand-rolled bluefin tuna akami with crispy lotus and spicy mayo, or the Japanese Wagyu sashimi with mizuna and gyu tare that we personally love, or their prawn toast tempura with bonito flakes and the okonomiyaki sauce you came for, or our highlight of the evening, the half-chicken skewer set that arrives in a septet, you’ll head out knowing you’ve experienced a truly unique, memorable menu. More on that marvellous skewer set: it’s a selection that includes thigh, tenderloin, crispy skin, wings, leg and a savoury tsukune, expertly seasoned to the highest standard.
Strawfire by Ross Shonhan, Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, West Corniche Road, Abu Dhabi, 6pm to midnight daily.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Strawfire is all about the experience, so take your time experiencing it.

On January 27, chef Fayçal Bettioui from Casablanca’s Table 3, will team up with the Butcher & Still’s own Marshall Röth at the Four Seasons Abu Dhabi, while on January 29, one of the capital’s prime seafood spots, Catch at St. Regis will see José Avillez, the pioneering chef from Belcanto in Lisbon (currently No.31 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list) collaborating with Head Chef Kessav Kutwaroo to present a special seven-course, four-hands tasting menu that highlights the finest regional seafood. Four of the courses will be crafted by José Avillez, showcasing his mastery of Portuguese flavours in a sophisticated, coastal-inspired setting. Additionally, Eddie Castro from Kuuru in Jeddah, celebrated for its modern Nikkei cuisine, will unite with Chef de Cuisine Fernando Tapia at the Abu Dhabi EDITION’s Oak Room.
To round things off for the signature series, Chef Sergio Cabrera of MouzMari, Abu Dhabi’s Emiratiinspired Argentinian steakhouse will be joined by Mostafa Seif, chef of Khufu’s Restaurant in Cairo on January 30.

IN YOUR FITNESS ERA
Whether you’re trying a yoga class for the first time, or you’re preparing for your seventh marathon, these pieces will get you fully motivated…
Writer-director Leigh Whannell received just acclaim for his soft reboot of gothic horror feature, The Invisible Man. For his next cinematic trick, he’s taking another classic monochrome monster – the eponymous Wolf Man – and giving it a new set of fangs, fit for the 21st Century. It stars the magnificent Julia ‘if-you-want-to-stop-me’ Garner, and Christopher Abbott, who we’ll be seeing a lot more of in the very near future.
Captain America: Brave New World
Expected Release Date: February 14
He’s back, no cap. We’re now in the Sam Wilson (Anthony ‘Clarence’ Mackie) era of Captain America, after Steve’s emotional Vibranium baton pass at the end of last The Avengers saga. The world is on the precipice of all-out war once again, a situation likely to be hampered by the fact US President-elect (played by Harrison Ford) moonlights as a beetroot-faced, hair-triggered, violently obstinate, smashfetishist. Red Hulk, wait, who did you think we were talking about?
Sinners
Expected Release Date: March 7
Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler places his celluloid muse, Micheal B. Jordan, in a period American horror piece against an unspecified – but pretty harrowing if the trailer is anything to go by (which it absolutely, necessarily is) –evil. Jordan plays twin brothers trying to make peace with their troubled past by returning to their hometown. But as the VO explains in the trailer, “If you keep dancing with the devil, he’s going to follow you home”.
Disney’s Snow White
Expected Release Date: March 21

Mirror mirror on the wall, what’s the riskiest Disney live-action remake of them all? Doing a film about dwarfs in 2025 maybe? Still, the makers of Snow White must have been surprised to see the extent to which the controversy blizzard has raged around creative decisions, and certain cast member comments in the past year. Despite the internet outrage (which now seems to be an integral part of the House of Mouse publicity cycle) I hope it doesn’t put cinema-goers off seeing what I’ve been led to believe is a more female-forward reimaging of the 1937 classic. A reboot that stars West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler as Snow White, and is directed by The Amazing SpiderMan helmsman Marc Webb. Seriously, Webb.
Alto Knights
Expected Release Date: March 21
5
2025 really must be the dawning of the Age of Gemini, or split personality disorder (same same), because this is the second film on the list where the lead actor plays two roles. And it’s only March. This time around it’s double Oscar-winner, Robert De Niro in a movie where he plays both antagonists in the narrativisation of the reallife mob war between Italian American crime bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello.
A Minecraft Movie (2025)
Expected Release Date: April 4
Skibidi your rizzlers, and fanum tax your Ohios (I’m pretty sure that’s correct terminology usage) because the cultural keystone of Gen Alpha, Minecraft, is getting a big-screen live-action adaptation. I know what you’re thinking, that game has no storyline and the graphics are blocky. But if you can build a successful franchise from the blank cheque narrative world of LEGO, anything is possible. This film stars Jack Black as craft table kingpin Steve, Jason Momoa, Jennifer ‘Stiffler’s mom’ Coolidge, and Matt Berry, with a plot synopsis that sounds eerily like a Jumanji homage.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning
Expected Release Date: May 23
The final mission. Probably. It’s not clear. But the smart money is on this likely be the last time this particular IMF squad gets wheeled out to face seemingly insurmountable odds, only to surmount them. Once more unto the rubber masks my friends. We know the formula now – twists, epic stunts, apocalyptic peril, characters you think are dead turning up unannounced, betrayal, gadgets, AI and Tom Cruise running along a landmark he shouldn’t be running on. We can’t wait. However that appears to be our mission, so we’ll have to accept it.

Karate Kid: Legends
Expected Release Date: May 30

Disney’s next (mostly) live-action remake, is a Hawaiian tale of ohana (family). It’s about looking past the faults of those dear to us, of not always having to fit in with societal norms, and the dire consequences of a lab-engineered weapons-grade space koala discovering Elvis Presley, the ukulele and coconut cake. This remake sees original cast members Chris Sanders (Stitch), Tia Carrere (Mrs. Kekoa), Amy Hill (Tūtū), and Jason Scott Lee (David) reprising their roles, alongside some exciting new additions, including Zach Galifianakis.
Netflix hit, Kobra Kai has seemingly re-stoked the public’s appetite for the sweep-the-leg-verse. This, the sixth film in the franchise, takes place in the same universe as the original trilogy, the 2010 remake and the Kobra Kai series. A timeline that even on paper gives me eye-twitch migraines. Mr Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel ‘San’ LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) must find a way to wax on and wax off in harmony, so that their young prodigy, Li Fong (Ben Wang) can – and I’m just working off past material here – either restore slighted honour, or batter a band of bullies.
Expected Release Date: June 13
After travelling to the innermost depths of the soul in the last few movies, the next Pixar film concentrates on outer space. Elio (which is derived from the Latin and Ancient Greek words for ‘sun’ if you’re a fan of prematurely jumping to conclusions) is a young boy possessed by contemplation of the ethereal mysteries of the universe. It’s perhaps his curiosity in these matters that leads him to being identified as the official head of state for earth and invited to attend an intergalactic parliament of space oddities. Voice acting comes from a cast that includes Yonas Kibreab, Jameela Jamil, Brad Garrett and Zoe Saldaña.
How to Train Your Dragon
Expected Release Date: June 13
Not content with sitting on the sidelines and watching Disney have all the live-action remake fun, DreamWorks have opened their own account with the ballard of Hiccup and Toothless, How to Train Your Dragon. And yes, that means in all likelihood there probably will be a Shrek remake, that will either galvanise or pulverise our collective cherished memories. The location shoot of the first instalment of this Vikings vs Dragons saga wrapped, in Belfast in May and the great news is Gerad Butler, has retained his role as village chief, Stoick the Vast.
28 Years Later
Expected Release Date: June 20
The next chapter in the zombie chronicles of Alex Garland (writer) and Danny Boyle (director) is 28 Years Later. This end-of-days bleakquel (because, perhaps more than any other cinematic dystopia, the 28 franchise just oozes apocalyptic melancholy), was shot entirely on iPhone to really hammer home POV reliability. The “I definitely didn’t get bitten” action here is chaired by actors Aaron TaylorJohnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.
F1
Expected Release Date: June 27
Before he gets to work on Top Gun 3, Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is gearing up for the release of F1. The film stars Brad Pitt as a retired Formula One driver (spotted filming in racing fatigues at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix), who’s lured back into the sport to coach a promising young motorist (Damson Idris). Expect drama on and off the track with appearances from a grid of real-world F1 drivers including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly.
Jurassic World Rebirth
Expected Release Date: July 2
Next on the summer blockbuster blockchain, is the seventh instalment in the Jurassic Park collection of movies. This iteration was directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla (2014), Rogue One and The Creator), and stars Scarlett Johanson and Mahershala Ali. It’s set several years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, and involves a team heading to an island (uh oh), to secure genetic material (here we go again), from several giant murder lizards (RIP). But what they find there, is even more disturbing than discovering a velociraptor in your pantry.

Superman
Expected Release Date: July 11
This is it. The temperature check. Just how good will James Gunn’s DCU actually be? Based on his previous work, and looking at the individual ingredients (including David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman), I’m going to stick my head above the predictive parapet and venture this: Superman has within it the makings of one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. The only potential Kryptonite I could envisage, is Gunn’s favoured humour-heavy dialogue approach, jarring with how the son of Jor-El has traditionally been framed. Fun bit of trivia for you: Nicholas Hoult who plays Lex Luthor, auditioned for the DCU versions of both Superman and Batman. If at first you don’t succeed, watch the world burn.
The Naked Gun
Expected Release Date:
August 1
Did you know there’s a Naked Gun sequel in the works starring Liam Neeson as the lead (and on-screen son of Leslie Nielsen’s Detective Frank Drubin)? Looks like the cows have finally come home to roost. This next-gen Naked Gun will be directed by Akiva ‘Hot Rod’ Schaffer, and features writing credits for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.
Michael
Expected Release Date: October 3
If you were thinking it was just a matter of time before Michael Jackson got a posthumous biopic, You Are Not Alone. It comes to us directed by Antoine Fuqua of The Equalizer Trilogy and stars Micheal’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson (son of Jermaine). Nepo-baby casting... you can’t Beat It for authenticity. The film covers a long stretch of the King of Pop’s life, from his childhood Jackson 5 days right up until his death. Whatever your opinion on Michael, good or Bad, this film will be Moonwalking into theatres this October, and has the potential to be an edge-of-the-seat, musical Thriller
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Expected Release Date: December 19
Wicked: For Good
Expected Release Date: November 21
It appears there really is no rest for the Wicked cast, because they’re chasing down a sequel release date precisely one year after the first instalment. In truth though, the movie – which is essentially the stage musical’s second act –was shot alongside the original, and it’s Jon M. Chu and the post-production team that won’t be getting any rest. Love spoilers? Can’t wait for the concluding chapter of cinema’s most melodic ‘villain’ origin story? The Wicked stage show is still running on Broadway and the West End.
The third (in what will likely be a five-or-more-part series) outing for the Smurf-Pocahontas sci-fi mash-up sees a lot of the surviving cast members returning (most notably Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña). These movies are works of art and really have to be watched on the largest available cinema screens for maximum effect. Director James Cameron hasn’t shared much detail about the plot, other than Fire and Ash will explore populations within the Na’avi Pandora diaspora that aren’t so necessarily good-willed or are at least a little more complicated in their cultural morality. He’s also stated that there are some big upcoming twists to the story, and an exponential growth in the richness of characters and worlds as the series progresses. Fair warning: the release date has already been moved nine times, so maybe don’t get too attached to the 2025 time frame.

WAL HOSN FESTIVAL
A celebration of the Emirates’ heritage
ant to experience a deeper connection to this country you call home? The Al Hosn Festival taking place this month offers a glimpse of Abu Dhabi’s rich cultural heritage, allowing you to understand the traditions, values, and history that shape modern Emirati life.
The annual event this year takes place from January 25 to February 9, 2025, and over the 15 days, visitors can immerse themselves in local customs, cuisine, art and workshops. It takes place at Qasr Al Hosn, a historical landmark and the oldest stone building in the city of Abu Dhabi, a symbolic backdrop for this festival.
What can you expect at the festival?
Nestled between the city’s skyscrapers and glittering skyline, Qasr Al Hosn, stands as a powerful reminder of the emirate’s past, and it’s within this historic setting that the Al Hosn Festival truly comes to life.

Ladies, if you’re visiting the festival, don’t forget to check out the all-new Women’s Majlis. The unique space offers a glimpse into the roles, traditions, and stories of women in Emirati culture.
Although they tend to work ‘behind the scenes’, you can’t help but develop a sense of respect for their contributions.
Art lovers will get to immerse themselves in a series of exhibitions showcasing both contemporary and traditional Emirati art created by local and regional artists.
To get a little bit creative yourself, you can try out one of the many workshops. The family-friendly sessions can be found at the Makers Space, and you can pick from a vast array focusing on Arabic
calligraphy, art and craft, nature and more.
At the House of Artisans, you can also learn the art of fragrance-making, discovering the deep cultural significance of scents in Emirati life. You can even try crafting your own.
For more fun for the little ones, there’s face painting and storytelling sessions, which will introduce them to the history and culture of the UAE in easy terms.
You can also visit the Souks dotted around the space and pick up a gift or two for a loved one, or purchase something for yourself.
And of course, it won’t be a festival without food. The focus is on Emirati cuisine, and visitors can indulge in machboos, harees, and luqaimat served at various food stalls.

About Qasr Al Hosn
This important heritage site comprises two major iconic buildings – the Inner Fort originally constructed in 1795 and the Outer Palace built from 1939 to 1945. After 11 years of conservation and restoration, it reopened as a museum in 2018, showcasing the development of Abu Dhabi from a settlement dependent on fishing and pearling back in the 18th century to the buzzing metropolis it is now. Expect to see artefacts and materials dating back as far as 6,000 BC.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Abdulla Lutfi
The illustrious Emirati illustrator
He may be a young artist, but he’s already racked up quite the portfolio of creative achievements. He worked with popular marketplace noon in 2024 to create a cool illustration clad delivery bag (one piece of packaging that we’ve made sure to hold onto). His art is displayed on a 46-metre-long wall between Concourses B and C at DXB Terminal 3; his work also graced the cover of the Emirates’ inflight entertainment (IFE) guide; and he collaborated with popular street artist, Maddy Butcher to create a mural at Kite Beach for Converse. He’s also had his work displayed at the major art festivals in Dubai including World Art Dubai and Sikka Art and Design Festival.
Abdulla Lutfi, or, A.L. as he prefers to be called, is a 31-yearold artist on the autism spectrum. But that hasn’t hampered his creativity or success.
Quite the contrary, A.L. considers himself an ambassador for People of Determination and is on a mission to enable special needs artists to find and share their own unique style, “so they too can be seen, heard, loved and accepted in the same manner that he has.”
As of January 2, 2025, A.L. closed a solo exhibition, Luffy x Lufti: Emirati Manga at Mestaria Gallery at Alserkal Avenue. The exhibition showcased a blend of cultures, pieces inspired by Japanese cartoon styles and contextualised by UAE culture. A number of his black and white canvases dotted the walls, showcasing Emirati men and women with anime like features. Some frames seem as if they’re page stripped right from a comic book, while other examples feature a single scene with large speech bubbles with relatable quotes, drawing warm smiles from gallery visitors.
Often cartoonish in theme and aesthetic, with striking monochrome lines his illustrations are rich with warmth and empathy. You’ll often find humour, as well as humanity, in A.L. originals reflecting his upbeat personality. He feels that his small canvases with funny writing and honest quotes are what people like most about his work.
THE EXHIBITION SHOWCASED A BLEND OF CULTURES, PIECES INSPIRED BY JAPANESE CARTOON STYLES AND CONTEXTUALISED BY UAE CULTURE.
One of our personal favourites… An Emirati riding on a camel (also adorning a ghutra) in the desert with the caption ‘Habibi Come to Dubai!!!’ They may look like prints, but his art is all hand drawn. For some pieces he sketches digitally, using a stylus pen on a computer screen. And it’s always in black and white. They animate the stories of Emirati life and frequently feature iconic UAE including the Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future, Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Dubai Frame. And it’s this signature A.L. style that makes his work so instantly recognisable.
His love for drawing began in the seventh grade. To broaden his talent, he later joined Mawaheb, an art studio for adults with special needs. Here he met his mentor Gulshan Kavarana who helped him reach his true potential. She was the one who asked him to draw a caricature of an Emirati man and woman – an element that became a staple theme in his drawings. In an interview with Dubai One, his art mentor Kavarana says that despite having studied art for a long time, she is now the one learning from Abdulla Lufti.
When it comes to fans of his work, it appears we’re all in good company, as A.L. tells us proudly of the time he met HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, who purchased a number of his artworks.
In between hosting exhibitions and collaborations and rubbing shoulders with royalty, A.L. creates his art in a studio at The Next Chapter in Al Fahidi District 10. Here, he also teaches children to sketch out their own masterpieces. “They love being taught by me” he tells us, smiling “they listen very well’’.
What does an artist do to relax in Dubai? A.L. tells us he meets up with cousins over the weekend and drives his 4x4 truck to the desert, playing video games and watching funny videos.
A.L. is already thinking about his next exhibition and while no solid plans are in place yet, we are sure he will be ready to display his work in the near future. You can stay up to date with the artist on his social channels, @abdullalutfi.
If you want to hang one of his creations in your own home, you can visit his art studio The Next Chapter in Al Fahidi District. You can also purchase an NFT of his work, which is available on his website, abdullalutfi.com
CULTURE // JIMMY CARR
JUST FOR L AUGHS
A masterclass in clipped comedy, British funnyman Jimmy Carr brings his new show – and unmistakable laugh – to the UAE once again…
Words: Laura Coughlin
If you’re a fan of razor-sharp oneliners and unapologetically dark humour, prepare yourself for Jimmy Carr’s latest comedy tour, Laughs Funny. The British comedian, known for his devastatingly tasteless two-liners, is bringing his signature style of wit to audiences around the world. With his trademark deadpan delivery, Carr’s gags are as quick as they are brutal, and they hit hard – delighting fans and making them cringe all at once.
Carr, who rose to fame with his notorious brand of offensive comedy, embraces his privilege with a sense of self-aware irony. Raised in the affluent UK home counties and a graduate of Cambridge, he’s a far cry from the working-class comic, but that’s exactly what makes his humour so distinctive.
Carr revels in his wealth, and his comedy reflects that boldness, whether he’s poking fun at his own upbringing or skewering society’s ‘sacred cows’.
The Laughs Funny show is a masterclass in timing and precision. Carr will likely open with a series of disclaimers to ensure the audience is prepared for what’s to come. Think: “I’m not being condescending. I’m too busy thinking about far more important
things you wouldn’t understand.” And “I was walking the streets of Glasgow the other week and I saw this sign, ‘This door is alarmed’. I said to myself, “How do you think I feel?’” They’re pompous, they’re tasteless, and they’re exactly what fans love.
Though Carr’s physicality on stage is minimal – he’s often still and awkward below the neck – it’s his quick-fire responses to audience interactions that leave a lasting impression. A master of comebacks, he crafts each joke with meticulous care, honing them over hundreds of performances. The result? A comedy show that’s as quick, calculated, and darkly funny as Carr himself. If you’re looking for a show that will have you laughing while also questioning your moral compass, Jimmy Carr Laughs Funny at the Etihad Arena on January 11 is must-see.
“THE TRAGEDY FOR COMEDIANS IS THERE’S NOTHING MORE THEY WANT THAN TO BE LIKED. WE DESPERATELY SEEK APPROVAL. IT’S ALMOST LIKE A PERSONALITY DISORDER YOU CAN DO AS A JOB.”
From the man himself…
I have a very strange laugh. I laugh on the in, not the out, so it sounds like a seal honking. I don’t know where it comes from.
There’s no lesson to be learnt from my shows. No takeaway “Aha!” moment. I’m trying to release endorphins by making people laugh. I’m not sending any message, and I’m not running for office.
Every comedian is Marmite. You have that reflex action whereby you laugh, or you don’t. You either love us or are left lost. The tragedy for comedians is there’s nothing more they want than to be liked. We desperately seek approval. It’s almost like a personality disorder you can do as a job.
Criticism of me is absolutely valid. People have a right to be offended. But I also reserve the right of freedom of speech to make a joke about whatever I want. I respect that people might say: “He’s a terrible human being” but when they say I step over the line – well, they’re drawing the line! I’m not.
You need to have a word with yourself if you’re ever in danger of a showbizzy hissy fit, going, “Oh, I’m rushed off my feet.” You’re doing stand-up three times in a week, telling jokes to people who like you and have paid to laugh. And the problem?

Kurulu Bay, Sri Lanka
Words like ‘sustainable’ and ‘eco-resort’ are often overused in the travel industry but Kurulu Bay, a boutique hotel set on the shores of Sri Lanka’s largest lake, embodies these principles in every sense. The serene retreat boasts a mere 14 luxurious accommodations, from treehouses to twobedroom cottages with private pools, each built in harmony with the surrounding nature, without a single tree being cut down. The design is contemporary and beguiling with unified indoor-outdoor design and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Koggala lake and dense jungle, where crocodiles reside and monkeys swing playfully in the trees above. Spend blissful days drifting away by one of two pools, gentle swims, morning yoga sessions, and calming massages at the spa, fueled by soul-nourishing homegrown dishes at The Kitchen (we recommend the prawn curry and chargrilled cabbage). For a bit of adventure, guests can take a boat ride across Koggala Lake, exploring its islands, Buddhist temples, and spice gardens. This eco-friendly hideaway is also just inland from famous surf spot, Ahangama Beach, and a tuk-tuk ride away from the historic fort city of Galle. Life at Kurulu Bay is slow, you’ll cherish every second and appreciate the beauty of life.

Habitas AlUla, Saudi Arabia
Boutique eco-retreat Habitas made roots in the Ashar Valley of AlUla in 2021. Complete with 96 villas dotted across the vast desert landscape, rooms are set between manmade dunes for optimum privacy, and many feature epic mountain views from their private terraces. The best way to get around is on an electric bike, and there’s something truly freeing about whizzing through the valley that way (although there’s buggies too for those looking to give their legs a rest). The main restaurant Tama, which means ‘here and now’, is designed as a space for bringing guests together, with big lounge spaces and lots of long tables for dining in big groups. On the menu, nourishing dishes are globally influenced with a strong Middle Eastern presence, and ingredients sourced from local farms take centre stage. There’s a separate, open-air seating space, which leads out to a shimmering infinity pool: it’s the perfect spot to dip between the water and the relaxing ambience of the lounge. Habitas started as a community-focused series of events, so it makes sense that there’s plenty of other gathering spaces too, including the glass-lined reception, Moon Shell coffee lounge, and an open-air space for breathing workshops and meditation. Relax and restore through ancient healing practices at Habitas’ Thuraya Wellness. From yoga and mindfulness to date seed body scrubs and herbal aromatherapy, Thuraya focuses on centuries-old practices to help clear the path to self-discovery and awaken focus on both our physical and energetic bodies.

STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT:
Delano Dubai
It was a celeb-adored icon on Miami’s social scene. But what can Delano bring to Bluewaters?
LOCATION
Tucked away in the far corner of Bluewaters, you’ll drive past the Banyan Tree, then La Cantine Beach Club to get to Delano. It unrolls along the beach on one side, with the looming facade of Ain Dubai on the other.
LOOK AND FEEL
It’s all rather understated and sophisticated – a bright and breezy reception is adorned in neutral hues, flooded with natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that run down the length of the sumptuous space. Billowing white drapes, a Delano signature, are found in the corridors, at the valet, and in guest rooms, a reminder of the stories laced through the walls of this historic brand. At the heart of the resort, the pool sits pretty in the centre, flanked by palm trees and sun loungers laid with canary yellow towels.
FOOD AND DRINK
Tutto Passa is the main restaurant, serving a concise continental buffet and then a more detailed a la carte menu for breakfast. Order eggs half a dozen ways, or one of the sweet options like fluffy pancakes with an airy whipped cream if you’re after something more indulgent. For dinner,
Italian flavours take centre stage, and it’s a wonderful menu that focuses on the coastal classics – think iced bowls of oysters with a zesty vinaigrette, and a long bowl of lobster pasta for two, where the ribbons of linguine come perfectly al dente and topped with chunks of meaty lobster.
For drinks Miami’s storied Rose Bar, where former guests included Madonna and George Clooney, has been given a Dubai glow-up. It’s still laced with rose-tinted glamour through its crimson velvet curtains and leather booths, and drinks on the menu include nods to the original through names like Miami Vice(s), a rum-based mix with strawberry and coconut water; and the South Beach, a tequila-based cocktail with mandarin and white chocolate.
ROOMS
Our guest room felt warm and cosy, a separate bathroom and WC on either side as you walk-in, and a wardrobe in the corner where we found some of the comfiest hotel slippers we’ve ever tried – making each step feel like walking on clouds. The Marina-facing balcony was a lovely spot to unwind in an evening, sipping on the welcome amenity of the Delano apple juice. Crisp cotton sheets, grand
marble bathrooms, and an extensive mini bar stocked with everything from tea and coffee to Humantra hydration shots gave the space an elevated and exclusive feel.
FACILITIES
One of the star features of Delano Dubai is the pool. While the Miami original was a regular drawer of the city’s who’s-who, the Dubai iteration appears to appeal more to families, who largely surround the front row of beds at the pool. Access to one of the best beaches in the city is another draw, and guests can enjoy days on the sand relaxing under a yellow and white striped parasol, while soaking in the stretching Arabian Sea views.
SERVICE
The hotel is still ironing out a few teething issues, and as such service lapses a little during busy periods at Tutto Passa. But at all other touch points – valet, reception, and particularly at the pool – everyone we meet is friendly and eager to make our stay memorable.
RATES
An entry level guestroom with resort view starts from Dhs2,460.
VERDICT
Delano Dubai might have a more familyfriendly feel than the storied original, but it’s adapting to its audience. Lacing its legacy through design details and its F&B offering invites you to experience the brand ethos, while still ensuring you get a quintessential luxury Dubai stay.
