EDITOR’S LETTER
EXPO 2020 DUBAI HAD ITS MOMENTS.
... Its epic opening ceremony moments. Its Riverdancing moments. Its royal visits and sporting heroes moments. Its, er, computer-crashing free concert moments. In this farewell issue to Expo 2020 Dubai, we look at 31 things that have helped shape ‘The World’s Greatest Show’ – a bucket list if you will of things to see, do, eat and drink, before it’s too late. Find our checklist from p23. But, as the saying goes, when one giant cubic gate closes, another futuristic one flies open (OK, that’s not exactly the phrase, but you get the idea). Yes, just as we bid farewell to Expo, we welcome the highly anticipated opening of Museum of the Future. Turn to p15 for a sneak peek of what’s inside. Elsewhere in our fair city, we explore the many pop-ups that are quite literally popping up across the desert; we loosen our belt buckles to explore another new food hall; and we even brave the dimly-lit rooms of a nightclub gym to rave and spin with a former Love Island reality star. It really is all in a month’s work here at What’s On. Enjoy the issue folks, and see you at Expo 2020 Dubai – blink, and you really will miss it.

Wadi Showka
THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES…
Hiking has always been a popular activity in the UAE but it blew up during the pandemic. It’s unsurprising really, with so many beautiful trails, wadis and coastal routes to explore. But it can be a bit intimidating for beginners. The Wadi Showka trail is a lovely route for hiking novices. Head to the Wadi Showka Dam, and park up on the side of the road (where you’ll find plenty of other cars parked). Then, use the Wiki Loc app to direct you. Our route was very manageable with gentle slopes, clear paths and it only took around two hours to complete. wikiloc.com – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content
Stouff Beirut Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene has had a real shake-up with the arrival of destinations such as Mamsha Al Saadiyat and Yas Bay. But away from the big new destinations there are noteworthy new openings to add to your culinary bucket list, like Stouff Beirut. It opened its doors in November, and on a mid-week lunchtime visit its botanical interiors are already filled with diners. The freshly baked hot mezze and woodfire pizzas are great but what I love about Stouff is chef Sharbel Akiki’s passion for produce – jams, oils, cheeses and more are all made on-site. @stouffbeirut – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor
Il Cafe, Bulgari Resort Dubai One of my favourite hidden breakfast spots is the stunning Il Cafe at Bulgari Resort Dubai. Get there early enough for a table out by the water and watch as the yachts sail out to sea. A Milano breakfast platter is Dhs165 and big enough for two to share, including a tea or coffee, bakery basket, granola, fresh fruit and eggs any style. If you’re still hungry, add on a French toast (I promise you won’t be disappointed). bulgarihotels.com
Poke bowls
It’s been a while since I’ve ventured down to City Walk. A recent visit to Galloire Art Gallery – a new contemporary art gallery in the cool neighbourhood, had me asking myself why I didn’t visit more often. There’s much to discover and enjoy, from dining, shopping and entertainment. You’ll most likely find me here again over a coming weekend or right after work unwinding and soaking in the cool vibes. @citywalkdubai.
Is it pronounced poke? Poh-kay? Pocci? I have no idea, but I am a devotee of these part-salad-part-sashimi Polynesian bowls of wonder stuff. My favourite discovery is ‘Build Your Own Poke’ via Deliveroo. They offer a range of salad/rice bases, proteins (including beef tenderloin), marinades (the truffle ponzu is life), and sauce (shout out to the umami aioli), and the pricing is decent. 100 per cent would poke on Facebook. Poh-kay on Facebook? Whatever. deliveroo.ae

NEHA MISHRA RAMEN ROYALTY
his friend. I made ramen and we had the best night. Then, one of their friends called me up after hearing about the dinner and asked if I could do the same for their friends. And I did, but I wanted to host the dinner at mine. And so, my first supper club launched. Then those 15 people told more people and it snowballed. What made you decide to open a Kinoya? In August 2020 my silent partner got in touch with me. It was a 15-minute meeting and by the end of it, we’d decided to go for it. So, I started looking for spaces. I wanted something inconspicuous, similar to the hidden gems you find in Japan. It was imperative the space was licensed, too. I knew from the supper clubs that was important. I also wanted to open a restaurant that I would want to eat at. Not in DIFC, but more casual. At
U
AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…
Your rise to fame in Dubai’s dining scene has been meteoric. How did it begin? It was one thing that led to many things. As a creative outlet from my job, I created A Story of Food (@astoryoffood).
“PEOPLE WOULD SAY: ‘I WAS EXPECTING THIS MEAL TO CHANGE MY LIFE’. AND I’D THINK: ‘WHY? IT’S JUST A BOWL OF RAMEN!” I always loved cooking and it was a space just to freely pursue that love. Then you got into ramen? Oh, I became obsessed. Japan is such a hyper-focused culture, and ramen is so layered and complex that you have to keep doing it over and over again. It really fit with my personality. I was obsessed with improving the dish. How did the supper clubs begin? I had the owner of 1004 Gourmet over for dinner with
the supper clubs I had people from all socio-economic backgrounds and I wanted Kinoya to continue that story; this was a place that was affordable and akin to eating at someone’s home. ‘Hype’ has been used alot to describe you and Kinoya. Does that feel weird? I went from a ‘home cook mum’ situation. You always like that type of person, right? People root for you. But when you open yourself up to this set up, it’s different. You are fair game. People are paying
for their food and they have a perception of you. People with conviction would say ‘Kinoya is just hype’; that I ‘had a fanbase and I’d landed so far’ but I ‘was going to fall’. You always remember the negative reviews. People were saying: ‘I was expecting this meal to change my life’. And I’d think: ‘Why? It’s just a bowl of ramen!’ Well, you did just receive a huge award – MENA’s 50 Best’s ‘One to Watch’… Validation is always nice because it gives you a boost and it buys you time to get better. It was amazing, but it’s time to keep working hard. Are you feeling positive about the future of Dubai’s restaurant scene? Yes. Now we’re growing from within. Ten years ago, you never saw stories like mine. The barrier to entry was insane. That’s changing for the better. What do you love about the UAE? It’s like saying ‘what do you love about home?’. It’s everything I know. I grew up, and had children here. So much of what I love is influenced by my upbringing here. What frustrates you about the UAE? I’m quite an unfiltered person and I like to say how I feel. But because of where we live that’s not always such a good idea. Do you reckon Dubai is your forever home? I love Dubai and would always love a base here, but sometimes I think you have to know when to leave the party. If all this goes well, and Kinoya expands, I’d love to see what new adventures that leads to. q @kinoya | @astoryoffood

MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE
It’s the news Dubai has been waiting for – the Museum of the Future is finally open. Here’s everything you need to know about the iconic museum
What’s On_15
MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE
hat’s the question our culture writer Aarti hears the most in Dubai? No, it’s not “can you get me tickets to the next musical at Dubai Opera?” (although that does get asked quite a lot). It’s “when is the Museum of the Future opening?” And with good reason. The construction site on Sheikh Zayed Road has been teasing the city’s residents for seven years now – take a drive past it and your mind can’t help but wonder what it’s going to look like inside, and what incredible futuristic sci-fi awaits. But wonder no more. The museum is finally open to the public and inside you’ll find immersive exhibitions, the likes of which have never been seen before. But the museum structure itself is equally dazzling. Made out of a fibreglass and stainless steel frame, the unique eye-like development was designed by architecture firm Killa Design, and has already been recognised by National Geographic as one of the world’s 14 most beautiful museums. Museum of the Future is an achievement on many levels. Not only is it an architectural marvel offering a peak into the world 50 years from now, but it rubberstamps the city’s position as one of the globe’s top tourism destinations.
THE ICONIC BUILDING All you need to know about Museum of the Future
Spanning a colossal 323,000 square feet and comprising seven stories, the 252-square-foothigh museum has a number of floors dedicated to different experiences. Three floors include immersive exhibitions focusing on outer space resource development, ecosystems and bioengineering, along with health and wellbeing.

Another floor showcases nearfuture technologies that aim to revolutionise the world by addressing challenges in areas that include health, water, food, transportation and energy.

AARTI’S TOP TIPS
What’s On’s favourite spots at Museum of the Future
16_What’s On
01. Be sure to take a photo from the viewing deck of Museum of the Future, where visitors stand on the inner shell of the museum with the beautiful curve of the building behind them. 02. We could spend an hour at the DNA library, where over
2,400 models of species are displayed in tiny glass vials. Illuminated with changing radium lights, it’s well worth exploring. 03. Feel a rush of new emotions at the Heal Institute, a sensory experience where visitors close
their eyes and listen to soothing sounds as you rest your palms over a vibrating basin. 04. Don’t forget to place an order with the robot barista on the ground floor. Then watch and be amazed as it prepares your drink for you.

The museum is covered in quotes from Sheikh Mohammed. Of the quotes enveloping the façade, one translates to: “We may not live for hundreds of years, but the products of our creativity can leave a legacy long after we are gone. The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it and execute it. It isn’t something you await, but rather create.” The last floor is all about the little ones – dedicated to children to explore and solve challenges in their own way to become our future heroes.

The museum signifies a peek into the world 50 years from now, exhibiting and predicting how next-generation solutions – from artificial intelligence to augmented reality and identifying potential threats – can enhance and revolutionise humanity for the better.
A one-day ticket will set you back Dhs145. Children under three years and people of determination enter for free. Museum opening times are daily from 10am to 6pm. Tickets must be purchased online via museumofthefuture.ae

The Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) has grown from humble beginnings to become the biggest pop culture phenomenon in the region. Here’s exactly what you can look forward to

COMIC CON
The celebrities Let’s be honest – the thing that gets us most excited about the upcoming Comic Con is the chance to get within photo (or even selfie) distance of our favourite film and TV stars. Headlining this year is British actress Nathalie Emmanuel, better known as Missandei from Game of Thrones. She’ll be joining MEFCC on March 4 and 5, as will Giancarlo Esposito. He is best known for his role as El Presidente in first-person shooter game Far Cry 6, and for portraying Gus Fring in the crime drama series Breaking Bad. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal, star of horror TV series The Walking Dead, and hit movies The Unforgivable and Baby Driver joins the event on March 5 and 6, along with actress Ming-Na Wen, the voice from Disney’s Mulan and Aki Ross in Final Fantasy, and Michael Rooker, best known for his portrayal of Yondu Udonta in the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Barry Keoghan, best-known for playing Druig in the Marvel superhero film Eternals, also makes an appearance this year, alongside Kevin Conroy, the voice behind Batman in Batman: The Animated Series. Finally, a veteran star in the gaming world rounds off the celebrity headliners. You know Mario. Who could forget the cheery “woo-hoos!” of Nintendo’s most beloved video game character? Now meet Charles Martinet, the voice behind the iconic mustachioed man. Martinet not only voiced Mario, but he also created the voices for Wario, Luigi and even Donkey Kong. He’ll be at Comic Con all weekend-long.

The cosplayers If the closest you get to fancy dress is a half-hearted trip to Mr Ben’s when the Rugby Sevens roll around, you are missing out. Middle East Film and Comic Con is a time when fans can really go wild with the costumes. But as well as getting to dig out your Stormtrooper suit, you can also admire the handy work of the professional cosplayers, who’ll hit the mainstage to compete in daily contests.

EAT // REVIEW ON THE RADAR
Beefbar Will a level-up on location make it second time lucky for this Monte Carlo import? IN A NUTSHELL: Beefbar near DIFC is now Beefbar in Jumeirah Al Naseem. WHAT IS IT? The first Beefbar Dubai opened in 2018 at Al Fattan Currency House. Few people cared because it was in Al Fattan Currency House. Sadly, so many great restaurants have failed there. (RIP Sass Café, Cle, Crazy Fish, R Trader et al). It was a shame because by all accounts – including ours – it was rather good. We ended our 2018 review like this: “In a city where steakhouses are in plentiful supply, Beefbar delivers a balance of atmosphere, service and food that marks it out as something special. Here’s hoping the location doesn’t let it down.”
It’s with joy and elation then that we heard of Beefbar’s rise from the ashes, taking over the space once occupied by Black Tap at the restaurant-savvy Turtle Lagoon in Jumeirah Al Naseem. Well played to serial restaurateur – and self-proclaimed ‘Beef Boy’ – Riccardo Giraudi for that smart move. Somewhere along the way, they’ve picked up some Asian things on the menu. Things like wok fried pepper beef (Dhs89) and steamed ginger sea bass (Dhs69) and some extra leafy dishes such as stracciatella fattoush (Dhs79), vegan bowls from Dhs130 (with add-on options to make it Keto-friendly) and
an organic cauliflower steak (Dhs130). But ultimately the brunt of the well-designed one-pager menu is still meat in all forms, from grounded and teppanyaki to barbecue and rotisserie. The star dish popping up on everyone’s Insta feeds? That’s the croque sando (Dhs145), which features slices of dry aged ribeye ham and a grainy Beefbar signature sauce that’s poured over the top of your sarnie as soon as your flashlight’s ready.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: We love the art deco brasserie feel at Beefbar. It’s cosy without being too squashed, and elegant without being too
snobby. The menu is less steak heavy than before, which is good as you’re bound to find something to suit all tastes. The beef fillet carpaccio and filet-frites were great. The signature croque sando was only OK (the mustard sauce lacked much of a punch and the whole thing was pretty small for the price tag). But there are plenty more solid dishes to warrant a return visit, which you’ll likely do, since the location is so much better. a Beefbar Dubai, Jumeirah Al Naseem, Mon to Sun noon to 11.30pm. 11 WOODFIRE
A trendy neighbourhood spot serving up smokey steaks ver in Jumeirah 1, a large villa has been converted into a contemporary eatery specialising in open-fire cooking. 11 Woodfire is a meat lover’s dream but the menu caters to all, using that signature smokey flavour in everything from starters to sweets. Its modern interiors are spot on, with aesthetic archways, on-trend limewash walls and plush red seating. As you enter, the open kitchen draws you in as bright flames flicker from the burning logs and chefs work quickly to plate up. The menu is clear and categorised into sections with whimsical names like Botanic Kingdom for seasonal vegetables and Ocean’s Bounty for seafood. The restaurant is unlicensed, so we try our luck with a nonalcoholic beer before quickly deciding to stick to water. Thankfully the starters are more enjoyable, beginning with red shrimp
O
(Dhs95), which consisted of four shrimp pieces swimming in a pineapple gazpacho with chopped endive and coriander. A delicious and refreshing dish, but we’d expected a bigger portion for the price tag. We also chose the wagyu burger (Dhs100), a beef patty in a potato bun with tasty melted gouda and mushrooms. We’re all for a medium-cooked burger but the one that arrived could definitely have used a couple more minutes on the grill. The signature series wagyu striploin (Dhs850), however, was cooked perfectly, with melt-in-the-mouth pieces of Japanese beef, salted to perfection. Kept simple, the steak was dressed only with a sprig of rosemary and ground pepper. Guests can choose their firewood for differing levels of smokiness. We went for the hickory (less strong) to allow the natural beef flavour to come through.
A mistake on our part was getting too excited at the prospect of potato gratin (Dhs48), and thinking it would pair well with a marbled steak. Both dishes stand out strong separately, but the combination was uncomfortably rich so we’ll just stick to the asparagus (Dhs47) next time. The quality of ingredients has evidently been a focus for the 11 Woodfire team, but the menu is pricier than we expected for a neighbourhood restaurant. Still, if you’re into grilled dishes, you won’t be disappointed with the choices here. a 11 Woodfire, Jumeirah 1, Mon closed, Tue to Fri 12pm to 4pm and 7pm to 11pm, Sat & Sun 8am to 4pm and 7pm to 12am. @11woodfire RATING Food B Atmosphere Price

MEET THE CHEF
TIMOTHY NEWTON Group executive chef at Myrra
The first dish I made from scratch was chicken enchiladas with salsa verde. I must have been about eight years old. I grew up in southern California so Mexican food was always around. When I was younger, France had a huge impact on my cooking. But now I am really seeing a lot of exciting and innovative things coming out of the US. My culinary heroes are chefs like Thomas Keller and Gordan Ramsay. I admire Anthony Bourdain as a food historian, too. My favourite dish at Myrra? It has to be the seafood paella fideua. It’s an absolutely amazing dish that everyone needs to try. As Dubai grows, location is no longer the key to a successful restaurant. I would say the basics of good food, good service and good prices are most important to make a lasting impression in the city. My last supper? I’d have fried chicken, mashed potato, gravy, biscuits and creamed corn. Oh, and a cold pint of the black stuff. a Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah. Tel: (0)4 770 1433. @myrrarestaurant

BRUNCH MONTH O F
T H E
Saturday brunch in its purest form On the heels of its dinner service success, this new modern brasserie and grill adds ‘brunch’ to the ever-growing list of reasons to pay Bastion a visit. Located on the 25th floor of Jumeirah Beach Hotel (where La Parilla once presided), Bastion now welcomes guests to its cosy venue every Saturday for a simple yet elegant feast. First, aim for a window seat. That’ll give you front row views out across the sea and the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, then prepare for a long and lazy brunch of both well-executed breakfast and lunch dishes prepared by chef Sebastien Torres. We kicked things off in Continental style with a basket of fresh pastries and butter, before immersing ourselves in a wondrous world of elegant breakfast items; a croissant monsieur, lavishly topped with gruyere cheese and turkey ham, a goat’s cheese tart salad with honey dressing, and a levelled-up egg and soldiers served in dainty cast iron pots with the choice of mushroom, salmon and duck confit. Even behind his mask, you can sense the pride emanating from restaurant manager Branimir Radosavljevic, who delicately rests each dish proudly on the table as if it’s a work of art. Onto more ‘lunch’ items, and we’re served a rich salt cod brandade topped with an olive tapenade crostini, a juicy Australian wagyu
skirt steak with fries, and a board of cold cuts, baby potatoes and baked vacherin Mont D’or cheese. It’s a full-on meal for two and we’re barely able to make much of a dent in it – much less the lovely desserts that include Baked Alaska, Gateau Basque and frozen yoghurt – much to our dismay. As brunches go, Bastion stands out by staying true to brunch in its purest form. That is, elegant breakfast and lunch dishes, mimosas, with many hours to enjoy it all. After all, brunch should be your most unhurried meal of the week, and at Bastion, you’ll want to take your time. a Bastion, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Sat 1pm to 4pm, Dhs390 with soft drinks, Dhs490 with house drinks, and Dhs690 with Champagne. Chef Vivek Singh
CINNAMON BAZAAR
Textures and flavours collide at chef Vivek Singh’s new restaurant at Park Hyatt Dubai n a crowded curry marketplace it can be hard to stand out whilst still trying to remain traditional and free of gimmicky dishes. It’s a cuisine so close to Dubai residents’ hearts that everyone thinks they know best, too. Chef Vivek Singh has a better claim than most though, having six cookbooks and a handful of revered Indian restaurants to his name. Following the success of The Cinnamon Club, Cinnamon Kitchen, Covent Garden’s Cinnamon Bazaar, Cinnamon Kitchen Oxford and most recently Cinnamon Kitchen Battersea, he’s now opened his first international post at Park Hyatt Dubai. Presentation is certainly something not too high on the agenda at your standard curry house, but our starters here – inside the colourful world of Cinnamon Bazaar – were certainly there to be enjoyed by the eyes first.
I
The Jodhpuri kachori chaat was a fury of texture, colour and spices. Essentially a collection of triangular spiced onion dumplings stuffed with curried white peas, and smothered in a medley of multicoloured chutneys, pomegranate seeds and crispy sev puri (Dhs70), it burst with a parade of flavours. For us to call the watermelon chaat (Dhs50) a palette cleanser, almost seems to do the dish a disservice, but that’s what it felt like; a fantastic accompaniment to the former chaat (kudos to our waiter for suggesting it), the sweet, pressed watermelon, amaranth seeds, date chutney and masala cashew nut provided a sharp and clean mouthfeel. Choosing a main course was harder, especially when you’re not familiar with which are gravy curries and which are plated. But it was impossible for us to see past the grilled aubergine (Dhs45), with sesame peanut crumble, labnah and toasted buckwheat (Dhs45). What a unique mix of ingredients – the gummy peanut flavour offered in a novel crispy snack worked beautifully with the slightly charred yet soft aubergine. Meanwhile, our one gravy curry, the Rajasthani lamb and corn curry with stir fried greens (Dhs90), may have been the ugly duckling on the table, but it was practically licked clean. The small hunks of meat were tender and deliciously enveloped in a curried corn gravy with bok choy. A menu then with a real capacity to
surprise, and you get the feeling there is plenty more to come from the team as they get their feet under the table over the coming months. They have more than enough rivals to keep them on their toes of course, but you can see a genuine desire to create exciting dishes without using shortcuts. So, if you’re after trying something done a bit differently, or even just something done a bit better, look no further. a Park Hyatt Dubai, Tue to Sun 12.30pm to 3pm and 6.30pm to 11pm. EAT // NEW FOOD HALL
New food hall
Twelve homegrown concepts at wallet-friendly prices, and all under one roof. What’s On looks inside Neighbourhood Food Hall in Motor City
O
ver the last few years, food halls have been springing up across Dubai, bringing together the great and the good of the UAE’s culinary scene. The latest, in Motor City, boasts 12 homegrown concepts, including High Joint and 1762, plus a range of other foodie institutions. Neighbourhood Food Hall is located on the site of an old Spinney’s supermarket, next door to SanSation, and its bright lighting and simple industrial-style design make it a cool place to grab a meal with friends if you’re after an unpretentious vibe. The focus here is on diverse, budget-friendly food, and one thing’s for sure – foodies will be licking their lips over the list of brands now under one roof at Neighbourhood. Offering everything from coffee and cake to burgers, tacos, hotdogs and pizza to Japanese Udon and yummy Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Korean food, there’s so much to choose from and each concept has been carefully selected by owner Nicky Ramchandani who knows a thing or two about good grub. Probably best known for being the founder of JLT’s popular Asian food hall, Streetery, Nicky’s passion lies in bringing together a community of food lovers and giving restaurant owners a chance to overcome some of the challenges faced in the industry today. 46_What’s On

With some big names on board, Neighbourhood Food Hall is bound to get the punters through the door, but the lesser-known outlets are also set to gain a raft of new fans. Because that’s the beauty of a food hall, right? You come for one thing but end up trying something else.
Serving: Traditional Indian favourites with a modern BBQ twist What to order: The Psychedelic Lamb Chops (Dhs64) are really spectacular. Perfectly seasoned and juicy, they’re served with a tzatziki dip. If you want some of the most tender chicken you’ve ever tasted, order the Bihari Bhaiya (Dhs48). q @meatishdxb
yourself a special token to get access to the secret menu but on the regular menu you can’t beat the High Jamz burger (Dhs55) - a beef patty topped with American cheese, bacon jam (made from house bacon and onion cooked for over three hours), ranch sauce and crispy onions. q @high.joint
02. High Joint Serving: Burgers What to order: If you’re in the know, you’ll try and wangle
02
03. Authentic Ceylon Serving: Sri Lankan food What to order: The Mud Crab Curry (Dhs80) is packed with flavour and worth getting messy for (it comes with a claw cracker and latex gloves). The rich sauce is absolutely delicious when loaded on to the accompanying fresh paan bread and you can’t leave without trying the Wood Apple Mousse (Dhs30), which is a must for dessert. q @authenticeylon
04. Sausage Fabrique Serving: Artisanal, handcrafted sausages What to order: Can we remember having a better hot dog in the UAE than the Spicy Italian (Dhs35)? Nope. Beef sausage is accompanied by grilled peppers, mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and pesto mayo and it’s seriously that good. q @sausagefabrique.dxb
MEET THE OWNER
NICKY What is it about food halls that you love?
05
05. Tacos Los Hermanos Serving: Mexican tacos, burritos and more What to order: All of the fresh-off-the-press tacos are superb and made with love, but we particularly loved the crunchy battered fish (Dhs15 per pc). Don’t miss the homemade guac’ and chips (Dhs30). q @tacos.los.hermanos.dxb
06. Maru Udon Serving: Fresh Japanese udon noodles What to order: There’s so much good stuff on the menu but you won’t go wrong with the Karamiso Spice (Dhs55) gourmet bowl. Ramen-style udon is topped with corn, spinach, marinated boiled egg, bean sprouts and mizuna (japanese mustard greens). q @maru.udon
When you visit a food hall, the buzz, the vibe and the energy all add up to a great experience. I grew up in Bangkok where the street food is some of the best you’ll ever find. I’ve modelled my own food halls on the hawker stands in Singapore. Going out for food shouldn’t be restricted – it should be pocket friendly and something we can all do regularly.
Tell us about your vision for Neighbourhood Food Hall I believe there is a need for the food industry to go back to what it was before cloud kitchens and delivery aggregators, and that is communicating directly with the community in which you’re operating. I’ve teamed up with vendors who are there to serve the community and enjoy doing it. I want to give small business owners who love food an opportunity to do something innovative.
Why did you choose Motor City as your first location? We did our research into the area and its demographic, and realised there’s a niche for our product in this market. This will be an enjoyable dining destination for families and friends to gather and enjoy food at afforadable prices.
What’s next? We’re looking into the first fleet of eco-friendly deliveries for Neighbourhood Food Hall and are hoping to launch our own app. That means you’ll be able to order from all 12 outlets in one transaction. We’ll be the first place in Dubai that’s doing that. This is just the beginning…

INTI
Nikkei is Dubai’s latest dining trend, and we’re here for it ore people need to be talking about Nikkei. It’s not often that a fusion cuisine gets us so excited, but whoever thought to combine food from Japan and Peru needs some sort of shiny award. And it seems we’re not the only ones who think so, as more and more Nikkei concepts continue to open up. The most recent of which is Inti, found on the rooftop of the newly opened Dubai Edition hotel. With Burj Khalifa views and an openair terrace, the spot is a no-brainer for tourists, however we preferred a table further inside, choosing a cosy booth overlooking the entire restaurant. Much attention to detail has been paid to the décor. From the eye-catching lamps to intricate wall carvings, the space feels contemporary and authentically Latin American. A 360-degree bar sits under a large amber light fixture, which looks like a work of art in itself, while a DJ stands close by, delivering endlessly ‘Shazamable’ tunes. We kick off with fresh guac (Dhs65) prepared at the table, which comes with a range of different chips. This, combined with the lubina tiraditos (Dhs80), starts us off on a great note. The thinly sliced sea bass tiradito has an incredible flavour, combining sweet passionfruit with spicy jalapeño to achieve the perfect balance. We also try the salmon tiradito (Dhs95), which fared well but didn’t quite match the level of the lubina. From the anticuchos section, make sure you order the corn (Dhs50); we love when a simple dish is elevated without becoming too fussy. A cob is sliced into four and poked with sticks for sharing ease and smothered in a creamy sauce before being rolled in crunchy breadcrumbs. It’s the best kind of basic. The atmosphere builds throughout the night, with stylish guests taking tables on the terrace, or heading into Waska, Inti’s private lounge. Service is attentive and the

food arrives quickly, which is impressive for a restaurant so new. Mains included pesca (Dhs190), a buttery-smooth, miso-marinated black cod with yuzu. Portion-wise we would’ve liked a bigger piece of fish, mainly because it was very tasty. The wagyu sirloin (Dhs450) was a more generous size and served perfectly medium-rare alongside a brilliant homemade chimichurri sauce. To finish things off, it had to be churros (Dhs50 for half a dozen, Dhs88 for a dozen), which came with both a raspberry and a chocolate dipping sauce. The churros were warm and fresh, covered in cinnamon sugar and made even more delicious by both dips. If you’re yet to hop on the Nikkei train, now is the time and make sure your first stop is Inti. Bar Du Port
T H E
The first venue bringing the party to Dubai Harbour One of the top priorities in March here in Dubai is making the most of its alfresco venues, and Bar Du Port is the spot everyone’s talking about. It’s the first to open in the new Dubai Harbour neighbourhood, and is already drawing in the crowds. We paid a visit one Wednesday and were welcomed with gorgeous sunset views out across the Dubai Marina skyline, Ain Dubai and yachts docked in the harbour. Bar Du Port has a boho-chic feel to it, with
décor inspired by the Côte d’Azur and Greek islands. A DJ spun as we settled at our table to make our way through the cocktail menu, which is extensive. Bar bites are good for sharing so we ordered the lentil du Puy salad (Dhs70) with butternut squash and kale, chicken croquettes (Dhs70), with an oozing cheese filling and lashings of truffle sauce, and the mouthwatering 12-hour slow-cooked smoked beef mini burgers (Dhs95). By 9pm, Bar Du Port is packed and we’re cajoled into staying a little longer as the whole venue transcends into an ultra-cool party, with a live band and DJ. Bar Du Port just introduced a brunch, too, priced at Dhs360 for house drinks and Prosecco. We’re told the brunch is already proving popular – so be sure to book well in advance. On Wednesdays, ladies can enjoy a canapé platter and two hours of free-flowing drinks for Dhs160. a Bar Du Port, Dubai Harbour, Dubai Marina, Mon to Fri 5pm to 3pm, Sat & Sun 1pm to 3am. Tell us about some of the characters joining you on stage. My regular characters are Sam, Albert and Baby. My bodyguard Roger will join me – he’s a paranoid American exmilitary type who thinks everyone is out to get us, so he interrogates the audience. We also have Urban Fox who accidentally got stuck in my luggage after sneaking in to eat my packed lunch. Surely you have a favourite? Ha! Albert my old man character is actually my favourite as he is 93 and says what he wants. He does magic and ventriloquism and of course it all goes wrong. Any surprise acts at the Theatre by QE2 performance? Yes, two people from the audience will become my ventriloquist dummies. It’s one of my favourite bits to do. Top three things you’re looking forward to doing when in Dubai? I’ve never done a desert safari so I’d really like to do one of those. I’ll probably visit the Burj Khalifa and I love water skiing, so I’ll hopefully do that somewhere on Jumeirah Beach. Read the full interview on whatson.ae

Art attack
Art Dubai adds a splash of colour to the city this month ART
M
arch is art season in the UAE, and the main event is Art Dubai. Now in its 15th edition, the fair will run from Friday, March 11 to 13 at the picturesque Madinat Jumeirah. The prestigious art fair has been a launchpad for many artists, curators and art professionals over the past 14 years and celebrates the arts through several initiatives. This year’s event seeks to further reinforce Dubai’s emergence as an international hub for art and culture and a major contributor to conversations about contemporary art.
What can you expect at Art Dubai? Quite simply, loads of art in all shapes and forms. There are over 100 exhibitors from 44 countries, including more than 30 first-time exhibitors. There will also be newly commissioned site-specific works by internationally renowned artists, group exhibitions and interactive exhibits. Visitors can find the usual three sections at the event: Art Dubai Contemporary with first-time exhibitors;
Art Dubai Modern with solo presentations of museum-quality works by 20th century masters; and Bawwaba (meaning ‘Gateway’ in Arabic) featuring works made in the last year or art made specifically for the fair. This year, Art Dubai has introduced a new section, and a rather important one – Art Dubai Digital. The dedicated gallery section will bring to the forefront the bridge that connects crypto and the art world, shining a light on the unique and new digital art age that we live in. There will be interactive installations, group exhibitions created by UAE-based and international artists, innovative talks by noted collectors,
conversations discussing the rapid growth in digital platforms and more.
Around town… While there is a lot to see in three days at Madinat Jumeirah, other top institutions around the country have partnered with the fair, including Jameel Arts Centre, Alserkal Avenue, Sharjah Art Foundation and Louvre Abu Dhabi. Each art space will present a vast programme of solo and group exhibitions, talks and events. Artistic director Pablo del Val stated: “For over 15 years, Art Dubai has been a place to discover and celebrate new trends, creating and facilitating conversations, and
celebrating the strength of creative output across the Global South. This year’s programme places particular emphasis on where the physical and digital realms intersect and represent what is our most ambitious and extensive programme to date”. FILM FILM
RELEASES NEWNEW RELEASES
DIRECTOR: Matt Reeves CAST: Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Zoe Kravitz
The Batman The caped crusader returns The Batman promises to be a caped crusader story that is fundamentally different from anything we’ve seen on the big screen before. It will stand alone, a full bat span away from all the other DC Universe releases. And from the trailers, it certainly feels like director Matt Reeves’ vision of the billionaire vigilante Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) is a much darker, more conflicted, human take on the costumed detective. The Batman is a year two story, which means we join the hero in his formative years beneath the cowl, where he’s finding his feet, finding out who he can trust, and indeed who he truly is. 58_What’s On
R-Patz does Batman When British actor Robert Pattinson was cast as Batman, many were shocked. None more so than his own agents, who assumed the actor only wanted to play more unusual characters. In reality, Pattinson was deeply intrigued by the role, ready to stand up to the judgement of diehard Batman fans. Since Twilight ended in 2012, he pivoted to more off-beat indie roles in movies such as The Lighthouse (2019) and The Devil All the Time (2020). Until now. This month, he suits up for a different franchise, arguably bigger than his one before…
On preparing for the role “I had a lot of time, about a year, and I read so many Batman comics, It’s insane. I was looking at my iPad and it was full. I wanted to absorb as much of the legacy of the character as possible and learn as much as I could about his history.”
On working out “You have to believably look like you’re able to beat up 15 guys. I had two and a half months to get bigger and look stronger. It’s early Batman so thankfully he’s not a huge bruiser.”
On Batman’s internal and external battles “It’s a difficult thing to accept that, at the end of your character’s ark, you’re never going to be OK. But in some ways that is kind of what Batman’s journey is.”
On playing a hero “Batman’s not a hero. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”
Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre DIRECTOR: Guy Ritchie STARRING: Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett Super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) must track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world’s best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world.
The Lost City DIRECTORS: Aaron Nee and Adam Nee STARRING: Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe Brilliant but reclusive author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) has spent her career writing about exotic places in her popular romance-adventure novels featuring handsome cover model Alan (Channing Tatum), who has dedicated his life to embodying the hero character, “Dash”. While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who hopes that she can lead him to the ancient lost city’s treasure from her latest story. Wanting to prove that he can be a hero in real life and not just on
the pages of her books, Alan sets off to rescue her. Thrust into an epic jungle adventure, the unlikely pair will need to work together to survive the elements and find the ancient treasure before it’s lost forever. What’s On_59
CULTURE The Bad Guys DIRECTOR: Pierre Perifel CAST: Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos After a lifetime of legendary heists, notorious criminals Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) are finally caught. To avoid a prison sentence, the animal outlaws must pull off their most challenging con yet – becoming model citizens. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade), the dubious gang sets out to fool the world that they’re turning good.
COMING TO NETFLIX
Against the Ice DIRECTOR: Peter Flinth CAST: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Joe Cole Based on the memoir by Ejnar Mikkelsen, Against the Ice stars Nikolaj CosterWaldau as Mikkelsen, an Arctic explorer who is determined to find the diaries of the Mylius-Erichsen expedition: diaries that would prove that the previously held understanding of the shape of the East Greenland coast was a myth, erroneous and presumably self-serving to the United States. While the plot is steeped in Denmark’s history, the trailer is quick to establish the stakes of the film, highlighting the harsh conditions and the seemingly futile expedition that Mikkelsen and his sole accomplice, Iver Iversen, played by Joe Cole, embark upon. 60_What’s On
The Adam Project DIRECTOR: Shawn Levy CAST: Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo After accidentally crash landing in 2022, time-travelling fighter pilot Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) teams up with his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell) on a mission to save the future. Expect timeline paradoxes and plenty of witty one-liners from Reynolds.

ou’d be forgiven for thinking that crazyloud beats, strobe lights and choruses of “woos!” were reserved solely for bars and clubs. While that may be true, you’ll also feel those same reverberations at Dubai’s newest gym in Al Quoz. Welcome to the world of Junk, where members spin to Spice Girls and squat under strobe lights. Junk is a dive-bar meets hybrid gym that blends the energy of a nightclub with the challenge of a workout. There’s one large black box room where all classes take place, including Beatbox (box fit); RE-Cycle (spin); DanceFit (dance/cardio); RE-Boot (high intensity conditioning bootcamp); and Yoga. The brainchild behind Junk is Dubai’s party king DJ Chris Wright – the man who created the incredibly successful Secret Parties brunches that cover the whole of the city. And if there’s one thing this guy knows, it’s how to throw down a party. Chris has pulled out all the stops to make Junk feel like a rave, with thrilling visuals, LED interiors, and a booming sound system to keep the energies high. We love the computer generator at the start of class that offers up a roulette of musical genres. Will your workout see you cycling to house, R’n’B or cheesy pop. Will you be squatting to the best of Beyonce? It’s a mystery.
And what of the trainers? Well, we’re so glad you asked. Leading the list of trainers at Junk is none other than Anton Danyluk. The former Love Island contestant relocated to Dubai last year to begin work on building Junk with Chris as a co-owner. He heads up a lot of the classes at

LASTMINUTE TRIP Discover worldrenowned Thai hospitality at this waterfront property Hailing from Thailand, Centara Hotels & Resorts is built upon traditional family values.
The location Tucked away on a prime stretch of the Deira Islands waterfront, this staycation spot will see you swapping bustling Dubai life for still blue waters paired with adventure, thanks to the family-friendly waterpark.
The look and feel Keeping little ones in mind, pops of colour alongside beach and ocean elements are dotted throughout the hotel. Expect under-the-sea murals and photos of Thai beaches paired with giant elephant sculptures, bamboo umbrellas, and tuktuks for that cultural touch of Thailand.
The rooms A variety of room styles are available with views of the beach and waterpark or the city. If you’re going with little ones, opt for the room which comes with bunk beds – they are sure to be a hit. For design, a minimalistic approach is taken with predominantly blue hues paired with touches of Arabia and a cool art piece that hangs over the bed.
Facilities and activities The facilities at this resort are plentiful, but the highlight is the waterpark which includes slides, cliff jumping points, play areas, a lazy river and more. For water sport activities head to the beach and take a dip in the Arabian Gulf. For non-water related activities, back in the hotel there’s plenty for the kids to enjoy in the Mirage Family Lounge. 74_What’s On
“ROUND UP THE FAMILY AND WATCH A MOVIE ON THE BEACH” Other must-try facilities include Spa Cenvaree, which offers an extensive selection of treatments and hot and cold plunge pools. Once the sun sets, round up the family and watch a movie on the beach.
The food and drinks The hotel is home to a number of restaurants but our favourite was Sands, aptly named as it’s located right on the beach. The restaurant serves up fresh seafood and grills and thanks to the friendly and attentive staff, the dining experience was truly memorable.
For dinner, we opted for Lebanese eatery Sheesh where we enjoyed dishes such as hummus, cheesy rakakat, shish tawook and the Lebanese mixed grill. If you fancy Thai food, there’s Suan Bua (where breakfast is also served), or for grills with Argentinian flavours, go to Uno Mas.
