EDITOR’S LETTER
THANK GOODNESS FOR ROOFUS
My dog is not an easy dog. He doesn’t like big dogs, or loud, breathy dogs. He’s not fond of strangers or our neighbours. He has a fit when the Deliveroo man rings the bell, and walking him around the cat colony of The Greens is a bit like braving the gauntlet. Come to think of it, Roofus is a rather difficult dog. But he’s been my lifeline during quarantine. Having something to focus on other than my own worry and fear has been essential. With a dog, our household has a forced routine, the type of schedule and consistency that experts say is crucial during turbulent times. We have to wake up to take Roo for an early walk; we have to make sure he gets outside to exercise; we must ensure that he eats right. And, aside from the many quirks mentioned above, Roo is amazing. He helps me see joy in the little things, like when he finds a treat I’ve hidden somewhere in the house, or when I make him a new toy out of old tea towels, and he squeals in delight not knowing what to do with himself. And so, I’m not surprised in the slightest that during these testing times animal shelters have seen a spike in applications. When you imagine unknown weeks of pacing the same home and seeing the same limited number of people, or even just your own reflection, the idea of a cute, cuddly companion, one you can pet, take walks with, and talk to (with the added benefit of them not talking back) – is suddenly incredibly appealing. But as the old adage goes (albeit slightly adapted), a dog is for life not just for Covid, so if you are thinking about adopting (and for the love of all things good, please adopt, don’t shop) do so knowing that this is a proper long-term commitment. In this issue, we’ve put together a guide to owning a dog in the UAE. We’ve sourced pet-friendly cafes, great daycare spots, and things to know before you home a rescue. We hope you find it useful. And if you’re still looking for your paw-fect pal, we’ve listed a handful of desert dogs desperate for a loving home. Roofus has given me the invaluable gifts of humour and joy during this extraordinarily challenging crisis. I’m not really sure how we’ll repay him, but we’ve got ample time, right here at home, to try. Enjoy the issue

ometimes the only thing that makes this crazy world feel like home is a semi-feral desert dog that watches you while you eat. And sleep. And go to the bathroom. The point is, having a dog changes your life. Fun fact: Dog people are fitter people. Take home man’s best friend and you’ll clock up to five hours of walking every week. Own a dog and you’re on your way to building a stronger heart, living longer, and having access to stress relief
on demand: just 10 minutes of playing with your dog leads to a dramatic drop in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. They offer companionship, help boost your mood, and, most importantly provide endless entertainment – just ask anyone who has been lucky to own a dog during quarantine. Of course, it’s not all licks and belly rubs. Dogs will have a huge impact on your life and if you’re seriously thinking about bringing one into your pack there’s a lot you need to be aware of. ay goodbye to sleeping in on Fridays. Your dog depends on you for food, exercise and toilet breaks and once you start them on a routine, they’re going to be following it every single day. And no more eleventh-hour travel plans, either. Unless you have a mate who is cool with dropping everything to watch your dog – if so, can we have their number? – you’ll have to arrange for boarding at least a week or more in advance. By getting a dog you are also committing yourself to something like 15 years of costs. Dog owners spend on average Dhs10,000 to Dhs20,000 minimum per year on their dog, factoring in stuff like food, flea prevention, treats and toys, day care, plus annual or one-off expenses such as neuter surgery, vaccinations, and pet insurance, as well as emergency vet bills, and pet sitting. In other words, if you want your dog to be healthy and happy (and they’re family now so you want that more than anything in the world) you’re probably going to be spending a fair bit.

Finding the dog for you
W
here you find your four-legged friend is a contentious matter, but if you really want a dog, then you should really want a rescue. The greatest thing about rescuing a dog (outside the sense of moral superiority) is that rescue mutts really are the best of all breeds, scientifically proven to be healthier than purebreds. There are plenty of shelters around the UAE, such as
K9 Friends (k9friends.com), SNIFF (facebook.com/SNIFF. MiddleEast), and Stray Dogs Umm Al Quwain ( facebook. com/straydogsUAQ), as well as dog-focussed Facebook groups like Dogs in Dubai who share pictures of dogs looking for new homes. But with hundreds of dogs at the shelters to choose from, how do you find the right pooch for you? At K9 Friends, they make an appointment for you
with one of their experienced homing staff. They also ask that new owners bring along everyone who will have daily contact with the dog and any dogs they may already have. They’ll chat to you about your lifestyle and experiences so that they can suggest a good match. It’s also possible that they suggest temporary foster arrangements so that you can experience life with a dog in your home first. What’sOn_33

side from the basics such as a dog bed, set of bowls for food and water, good quality dog food and some toys and treats, you must prepare mentally. “Remember, your new family member will be with you for their whole life. Ruff guide to pet-friendly spots
S
o now you’ve picked the Hooch to your Turner, where do you go for some bonding time? There are a handful of terraces around Dubai that will welcome dogs once we’re all allowed outside again proper. The most popular spots are listed on the next page. Keep an eye on Facebook group Doggie Diners for an updated, definitive list. Elsewhere, owners with big dogs championed the opening of Bark Park (barkparkdubai.com) in Al Awir. The desert park is a fullyenclosed area for dogs to exercise and socialise off their lead – and it’s certified and approved by the Dubai government. Similarly, and much closer to the city, Unleashed Dog Park (instagram.com/ unleashed_dxb) opened relatively recently, and is Dubai’s first urban outdoor dog park, dedicated to dogs that love to run free. And finally, if you fancy taking your pup away for a desert adventure complete with home comforts, check out pet-friendly Airbnb RAK Glamping (rakglamping.com).

PET-FRIENDLY CAFES
Because you shouldn’t have to choose between responsible pet ownership and a great meal, What’s On has scoured the city to find Dubai’s best venues for enjoying both 01. Arrows & Sparrows
08. 1762 – Stripped

Q&A
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Paul Sowerby, co-founder of My Second Home How do you reassure worried owners that their animals are okay in daycare? Why was My Second Home set up? After a chance encounter walking our dogs in the desert, Vaughn, Sanjiv and I (now all co-owners of My Second Home) agreed that there needed to be somewhere that Dubai’s dogs could enjoy some respite from the heat and have an opportunity to play and socialise freely without the constraints of community rules and regulations. We wanted to create a truly world-class resort.
How does it differ to offer facilities? There’s no shortage of good facilities in the region, but we’ve always felt we needed to go a step further and create an environment where dogs and their owners could access luxury, enrichment and wellbeing all in one resort – and on a scale never seen before. Covering 18 tennis courts and with 149 individual rooms, the world’s biggest indoor dog park, daycare for 250+ guests, a grooming and pampering salon and three pools – the biggest difference is its sheer size. And to add a little extra pizzazz, the resort
36_What’s 36_What’s On
Our facility has been split into several zones so that dogs only socialise with others of a similar size and temperament. Our handler-to-dog ratio is more than adequate to make sure daycare play and rest is safe and suited to individual needs. All our suites are equipped with individual cameras, which owners can access and check up on their pups when they are resting in their suites.
How do you become a member? is managed and run under the supervision of general manager Sean Parker, who joined from Atlantis, The Palm.
Why is it important to socialise your dog with others? Just like children, dogs thrive on interaction, enrichment and vitality. Those that have a chance to play together safely and regularly are healthier in both mind and body. That translates into a better lifestyle experience for both the pet and its owners. We have trained handlers to make sure all our four-legged guests get the best possible experience when they’re with us.
Do all dogs share the same space? One of the benefits of having so much space is being able to give dogs the opportunity to enjoy numerous different playtime environments and experiences. It also gives us the flexibility to make sure that they only interact with dogs of a similar size, temperament and outlook. Because we understand that’s especially important for our smaller guests, we’ve just completed building a new loft penthouse with breakout space for what we call our Little Gems. They also have their own pint-sized outdoor splash pool as well as a private area within the main Dog Park. Those that wish to mix it with the bigger boys and girls are welcome to, providing they get permission from mum or dad.
Easy, just give us a call and organise to come and meet us. Because the safety of our guests is our principal focus, each dog must undergo a behaviour assessment. As an additional safety measure we only accept dogs that have been neutered/spayed. The assessment takes about 20 minutes and is the first stage in the registration process. After the assessment there’s an induction day to give your dog a chance to get used to our facilities and other guests, and vice versa. Also included is the set-up of your account and login details for webcam access etc when you’re away, an initial frontline treatment and a voucher for four days (worth Dhs200) in the Dog Park. A one-off fee of Dhs500 covers the whole process. a For more information, visit mysecondhomedubai.com

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Six reasons why pets love ZIWI® Peak
T
hough it may seem like pet food is pet food, not all are created equal. The quality of pet food products varies greatly from one company to another, and it can be hard to determine what the best food is for your furry friend. It’s important to remember that the quality of your pet’s diet is directly related to their health, so don’t settle for mediocre food, treats or supplements. At ZIWI, a New Zealand family owned business, their recipes feature high inclusions of free-range meat and organs and sustainable wild-caught fish, all sourced from New Zealand. But that’s not all...
03
01
Whole-prey recipes ZIWI’s whole prey recipes are rich in meat, organs, bone and seafood, with added superfoods for a nutritional boost. Every ZIWI Peak recipe is made without unwanted carbohydrates and is free from artificial preservatives. Designed to deliver peak nutrition, all recipes feature up to 96 per cent meat, seafood, organs and bone in authentic inclusions and whole-prey ratios to mirror the natural diet.
02
High meat. Rich in protein Following Mother Nature’s lead, ZIWI Peak is free from less digestible and incomplete plant proteins. Instead, recipes are loaded with up to 96 per cent meat to deliver a natural source of protein and amino acids.
100 per cent raw ingredients Many pet foods use highly processed rendered meats or meals. Raw inspired, ZIWI Peak uses only raw or fresh meats, poultry or seafood.
04
10 per cent superfood blend Every ZIWI Peak recipe features a minimum of 10 per cent superfoods – a blend of cold-washed green tripe or poultry heart, whole New Zealand green mussels and organic kelp. This powerhouse source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants supports brain, heart and joint function while contributing to skin and coat health.
05
Gently air-dried ZIWI’s Peak’s air-drying technology – inspired by centuries-old meat preserving techniques – locks in the goodness of its raw ingredients without artificial preservatives, made to combine the best of raw and fresh diets with the safe convenience of dry foods.
06
Moisture-rich A moisture-rich diet is critical for healthy kidney function and urinary health. ZIWI Peak offers a wide variety of wet recipes too, to keep pets happy and healthy.

ROKA
Can Zuma’s little sibling live up to the family name? f there’s any culinary cuisine brave enough to take on the fine-dining scene in Dubai, it might as well be Zuma founder Rainer Becker. The chef and restaurateur already has four Roka outlets in London, and chose Dubai as the location of its first international venue. It seems Roka Dubai hasn’t come in quietly either, taking a coveted spot in The Opus, designed by Zaha Hadid, in the recently opened ME Dubai Hotel. The restaurant opened soon after the hotel’s launch, but was quickly forced to close under the government’s precautionary restrictions. As soon as it was safe to do so, Roka announced its reopening, with all the necessary safety measures in place. Ready and raring for an outing after so long, we enter the restaurant and are warmly welcomed, followed by a quick temperature check. We’re shown to a booth sandwiched between the open robata kitchen and the outdoor terrace, complete with all-important Burj Khalifa views. The restaurant is busier than expected, with almost all of the two-metres-apart tables filled with hungry guests. Our knowledgeable server makes drinks recommendations and gives us a moment to check out the menu.
I
46_What’sOn
There’s plenty of choice, with one page dedicated to various methods of sushi, and another offering signature dishes, seafood and meat. The price point is reduced compared with Zuma, and the kitchen team use the same methods as its sibling, just with more accessible ingredients, we’re told. We start off with the iceberg salad no wafu (Dhs45), a beautifully light dish which offers a teaser of the flavours to come. Shredded iceberg leaves are carefully moulded into a mini mountain and drizzled with a sweet onion dressing, before being topped with seaweed. Don’t skip the opportunity to try the gyuniku to goma no gyoza (Dhs56). Although, for the price, we would hope for more than four pieces, the pretty bite-sized parcels are packed with flavour. Inside the soft dumplings are a balanced mix of minced beef with hints of ginger and sesame – simply delicious. For the mains we opt for a meat and a fish dish. Sadly, the arima sancho no hamachi (robata grilled
kingfish), although beautifully presented, misses the mark as it’s far too salty for our liking. The hinadori no lemon miso yaki (Dhs110), however, is accomplished. The cedar roast baby chicken is just the right mix of savoury and sweet thanks to its chilli and lemon seasoning. The final showstopper is worth the trip to Business Bay on its own. Roka’s stunning dessert platters are sure to be coming to an Instagram Story near you, as they are a work of art. A four-tiered masterpiece filled with exotic fresh fruits, homemade ice creams and sorbet, an unforgettable banana and caramel dish with ice-cream puffs as well as vanilla cheesecake and a unique twist on apple crumble. We wished we’d saved more room. a Roka, ME Dubai, The Opus, Business Bay, daily noon to 7pm. The condensed menu still boasts enough of the restaurant’s superb appetisers and entrees to make your at-home meal feel memorable – like the deliciously creamy guacamole, the fully-loaded nachos, and the chicken quesadillas, which are served in takeout form as cylindrical cheesy wraps. The shrimp fajitas are a decent size for sharing and travel far better than its beef counterparts (which after a 15-minute journey are a bit chewier than you’d normally get them), and the pots of sour cream, salsa and rice help make it more of a heartier home-meal. EAT // HONEY
Making a buzz How to adopt a beehive in the UAE All of the sweetness, none of the sting… Spread over hot toast, dolloped into a stir-fry, or drizzled into tea – when it comes to ingredients, honey is Mother Nature’s original multitasker. Over the past few years, the world has seen a huge spike in the number of urban beehives, as people pay more attention to the provenance of their food and the plight of the honeybee. While it may not be practical to have your own hive here in Dubai, honey lovers can get the liquid gold on tap, thanks to a clever concept from MyHive. Based in The Sustainable City, MyHive lets you adopt your very own beehive. You get all the benefits of owning hives, without any ongoing maintenance. The hives are located in the Hatta Mountains, where the unpolluted air makes for clean, pristine honey. When you adopt a hive, you’ll be invited to visit it three times a year to learn about the honeyharvesting process.
Show me the honey Your personal honey stash will be delivered to The Sustainable City for collection three times a year, to coincide with the local honey seasons in the UAE. You can expect to receive eight to 10kg of pure honey each year. Each batch of honey will have a distinct flavour and aroma profile, thanks to the particular blossoms the bees feed on. In May and June, you’ll receive your share of the nutrient-rich Samar honey. June and July is the rich red honey from the Ghaf tree; and October and November will be the top-shelf Sidr honey, said to be the tastiest – and most
expensive – of all the honeys. Not only will you get to enjoy pure, unadulterated honey straight from the source – you’ll also get the pleasure of helping protect the local bee population. To adopt a beehive with MyHive, you’ll need to pay a registration fee of Dh750 and an ongoing annual fee of Dh2,250. This includes the thrice-yearly honey delivery, plus three arranged trips to the Hatta hives. You can also monitor your beehive remotely to track its progress. a For more information about adopting a beehive in the UAE with MyHive, visit myhive.ae What’s On_49

EAT // HOT SAUCES HOT LIST
Spice up your life
It’s hot but that won’t stop hot sauce fans from skipping any Scoville units. Here are eight top hot sauces you can get delivered in the UAE THE APPROPRIATE OPTION
THE BUDGET OPTION Excellence
Zombie Apocalypse
There are dozens of entrylevel hot sauces on the market, but few hammer the flavour notes quite as hard as Excellence’s range of tonguetinglers. Instantly identifiable by the spice-addled eagle on the packaging, this sauce is a cupboard essential for chilli sommeliers. There are habanero, garlic and jalapeno variations, but as purists we feel the original version is the brand’s magnum opus. Pairing suggestion: Shake it all over your fries. Around Dhs3.50 for 177ml. Available for delivery from most supermarkets via Instashop or noon.com.
The Zombie Apocalypse Ghost Chili Hot Sauce is a blend of the super-hot ghost pepper and always-classy habanero. Yes, it is wildly warm on the tastebuds, but it’s more than the sum of its spice. There’s an entirely unique tang to it once the burning subsides, and we are a huge fan of using it to bolster the flavour of casseroles and stews. You can grab a bottle from whizz.ae for Dhs145. Pairing suggestion: Whack it in your next chilli con carne, and pour over a bowl full of nacho chips.
THE MILITARY GRADE OPTION Reaper As the appearance of The Grim Reaper – the literary embodiment of death – on the front of the bottle suggests, it’s not a drop for noobs. Essentially weapon’s grade hot sauce, it’s made from the hottest known chilli pepper on Earth, the Carolina Reaper, hitting a nuclear, two million Scoville units (Tabasco is about 2,500). It’s a TikTok challenge waiting to happen. Order via importer Ubuy for Dhs82. Pairing suggestion: It really doesn’t matter what you put it on, all you’re going to taste is fire. 50_What’s On
THE BEST ALLPURPOSE OPTION Pain 100% Pain 100% Hot Sauce has broad shoulders, carrying both a weighty heat punch and a complex flavour profile. It’s a habanero and capsicum mash, made with 100 per cent natural ingredients and a little sprinkle of acidic pixie dust. At once forceful and subtle, this sauce makes sense on almost any meal and is a tabletop staple for spice seekers. You can pick this up in supermarkets across the UAE (and via their delivery services), but if you strike out there, you can also get it online at Ubuy.ae for Dhs54. Pairing suggestion: A handsome dip for grilled lamb chops.
THE CARIBBEAN OPTION
THE CONNOISSEUR’S OPTION
Encona
Purple Hippo Hot Sauce
Made with choice scotch bonnet and habanero peppers, Encona Hot Pepper Sauce holds a prestigious place in the hearts of many Caribbean food fans. It packs a pretty formidable punch, but sacrifices no flavour in doing so. The round smokiness of the scotch bonnet, and the cutting acidity are the perfect level-up for meats, stews and carb loads alike. The little taste of island life has been spotted on the shelves in Al Maya and LuLu, but it is elusive. We recommend trying to track it down through the usual grocery ordering apps in your area. If unsuccessful, you can order it from the US or UK through desertcart.com. Pairing suggestion: Our guilty hot sauce pleasure is pouring rivers of this stuff over fluffy white rice.
Purple Hippo Hot Sauce is a little-known, award-winning hot sauce that is a blend of habanero and scorpion peppers, balanced out with prickly pear cactus juice, agave nectar, strawberries, lemon and lime juice. Once you get past the initial burn, this sauce packs a whole olfactory orchestra of different aroma and flavour notes. It’s Cabo in springtime, a Hawaiian volcanic breeze, you hum the chorus, and this sauce will sing the melody. Available on special order through desetcart.ae for Dhs191. Use sparingly. Pairing suggestion: Sausages. Trust us
THE CHEEKY OPTION Nando’s You can’t really discuss spicy food in the 21st century without nodding at Nando’s. This cult spice-slathering chicken chain is now a global phenomenon, built on a passion for piri-piri and precision-grilled poultry. Hot, citrusy and complicated… forget KFC, this is the secret herbs and spice blend recipe we want in on. And having sampled the full range many times over, we find the ‘medium’ sauce gives the best balance of heat and flavour. The sauces are available to buy from many supermarkets in the UAE, but for the real fans, we present the full restaurantsized bottle available from LuLu at Dhs23. Pairing suggestion: Chicken, obviously, but it makes a surprisingly welcome accompaniment to a steak too, or anything with a good char.
THE HIPSTER OPTION Sriracha We’re not sure how the popularity of sriracha exploded so quickly, but this Asian hot sauce sensation is here to stay. You’ll find it cropping up all over trendy menus, in mayo, reductions or even **shudders** some more avant-garde desserts. There are plenty of brands to choose from, but one of the most popular is the Huy Fong Foods variety, emblazoned with a rooster, green cap and Vietnamese, Chinese, English, French and Spanish script on the bottle. The distinctive distilled vinegar and garlic taste create a jagged tastebud highjack that is so easy for extreme flavour fans to fall in love with. Get yours at supermarkets across the UAE. Pairing suggestion: Eggs. It’s the ultimate omelette relish… What’s On_51

Lebanon
LEBANON How tiny is it: 10,400km2 Or roughly: Eight times smaller than the UAE With dramatic snow-capped peaks and a coastline that shimmers like the Côte d’Azur, you won’t find a better slice of land in the Middle East. Time it right and you can spend your morning shredding nearperfect snowpack at a Swissstyle ski resort, then cruise back down the mountain for an afternoon dip in the Mediterranean. Visitors can expect cosmopolitan cities, fantastic food, and an ancient wine-growing culture. Beirut channels both the seaside glitz of Miami and the leafy, walkable charm of southern Europe, with sidewalk cafes, 70_What’s On

SLOVAKIA How tiny it is: 49,035km2 Or roughly: 1.7 times smaller than the UAE Simply put, Slovakia is a sensational steal. It offers the best of romantic Europe (rolling countryside, a relaxed capital city, jaw-dropping castles, Renaissance churches, and excellent food) for a third of the price of nearby destinations. The country inherited some of the best aspects of its five neighbours, enjoying Czech-style brewing, Polish diligence, Austrian architecture, Ukrainian good looks, and Hungarian stews.
