1.0 Urban Design My passion for Urban Design is unprecedented to none. I have partook in the preparation of many different Urban Design Project. Though I have not been trained fully in the specialty, I rely mostly on my talents and continuous learning. I am very conversant with various design software's and these includes SketchUp, AutoCad, InfraWorks 360 and City Engine. Also I am very gifted at Hand sketching which I conceptualize my ideas through.

1.1 Kopano Open Space Masterplan 2019 In 2010, the then Town Planning and Development Committee approved permission for Kopano Ward Development Committee (WDC) to use the open space for recreational purposes that will eventually benefit the community and generate revenue. Plot 6408 was identified. Plot 6408 is zoned open space according to Selebi Phikwe Development plan (2016-2035) and measures 1.75ha.

I was tasked with designing a Masterplan for the Community Open Space of Kopano Ward in Selebi Phikwe. The intention of the Masterplan is to give guidance regarding utilization of open space in Kopano and how the project can be implemented as well as providing guidance towards requesting funding from the Constituency Community Programme (CCP). The design of the Park Layout incorporated the Traditional Tswana “patlelo” (Open Space) elements which has always been the norm in traditional planning. Members of the community would gather to relax, perform traditional rituals such as ‘merero’, within ‘patlelo’. A conceptual design was hand sketched and later SketchUp Software was utilized for designing and rendering the final output. 3D Illustration Location Map

1.2 Sekgoma Mixed Use Tourism Corridor Rezoning Plan 2018 In 2018 while working for the North West District Council, I was tasked with the responsibility of coordinating the production of the Sekgoma Mixed Use Tourism Corridor Rezoning Plan. I was responsible for guiding a team , designing and mapping inputs of the project proposals.

We Successfully Completed the project within scope and limited time of 8 months. Intensive consultations including a Business Community breakfast seminar, Village Ward Development Committees and the general public were conducted. The project was approved by the Physical Planning Committee and is currently awaiting the Minister approval which then shall lead to its implementation. This project came about after the realization that a number of applications for change of land use from the predominant residential to other land uses were continually being turned down on the basis of noncompliance to the area land use zoning prescribed by the Review of Maun Planning Area Development Plan (1997-2021). Sekgoma-Disaneng Road is used by residents and visitors, including many who are attracted to the iconic World Heritage Site the Okavango Delta. The visual impression presented along this corridor can create a lasting image of Maun. The Main Objective was to: To create a mixed-use Tourism Gateway precinct that contains a diverse variety of land uses, services and activities that promotes a vibrant sense of place in which to live, work and play.

1.3 Francistown A1-Blue Jacket Corridor Revitalization Plan The City of Francistown Council noted the urban issues challenging the city’s growth and expressed desire for Francistown to be strategically positioned within the economical context of the region. A vision was therefore initialized to kick start the transformation process; “An investment center of Vibrancy by 2022.” The Vision was aimed at creating investment climate which is conducive for the region, to strive to project and position the city as a leading economic hub in Southern Africa by 2022. The Francistown Investment Forum was formed to drive the Vision. The Department of Town and Regional Planning’s whose mandate is to ensure spatial development of the Country responded by undertaking an urban Design project (Francistown Revitalization Plan) that will aid FIF achieve its mandate. A team of Planners and designers was formed to produce and compile the Revitalization Plan. The following consists the plan outputs which I was responsible for. Unfortunately, due to limited capacity the project was outsourced and the tender awarded to a private Consultant to produce the Plan and Development Guidelines.

2.1 Samedupe Structure Plan and Detailed Infill Layout Plan

Okavango

Among the Layout Plans I designed, Samedupe Settlement in the North West District, Maun is one of them. I was responsible for conceptualizing, designing, producing a design Brief write up and presenting the plan to different stakeholders for approval.

Samedupe is settlement located 10km south East of Maun, along the A3 Maun -Nata road. It is a settlement that has been incorporated into the Maun Growth area therefore it is considered a ward of Maun. According to 2011 census Maun has a total population of 55,784. The aim of the Structure and detailed layout plan was to guide orderly growth and make available adequate plots for the various land use categories. The layout plan promotes optimal use of land, economic growth, environmental protection and embraces the major principle of physical planning, compatibility.

Sector Model Periphery Agricultural Land Residential Central

Industrial The structuring of Samedupe has adapted elements of the Sector Model which emphasizes the placement of land use activities into sectorial functions and cohesion. This model also suggests that the Central Business District be found in the settlements geographical center; therefore, ensuring convenience and proximal accessibility by all the settlements.

Also, the main aim is to intensify the existing residential area and at the same time preserving agricultural land.

2.2 Shorobe Detailed Infill Layout Plan Another Layout I designed and presented for approval in 2018 is the Shorobe Layout Plan. Shorobe is a settlement located in North-West District, it is about 43km north east of Maun. Shorobe falls within the Maun Planning Zone as categorized by the Ngamiland Integrated Land Use Plan and is administered under the Maun Administration Authority. The estimated population of Shorobe is 1031 in 2011 census. It was 955 people 2001 census, thus there was 7 % increase in a decade which indicates low growth.

Conceptual Framework The neighborhood Concept with Clusters was adopted during detailing. The layout is predominantly residential with ancillary uses such as commercial and civic and community plots. Commercial, recreational and community facilities are within reach by all in various clusters. Vehicular and pedestrian circulation within the planned area has been designed to ensure maximum convenience. The road reserves and hierarchy as specified by the Urban Development Standard were adopted during the design for circulation. Existing roads in the area were taken into consideration including other utilities to be provided within these road reserves like, telecommunication, water and power

2.3 Sefhare, Borotsi & Chadibe Structure Plan 2017 A development Planning document aimed at shaping and guiding the spatial growth and development of Sefhare, Borotsi and Chadibe. I initiated a brief informative structure plan approach for Sefhare, Borotsi and Chadibe Settlements. This was to reduce the bulkiness and uninteresting typical approach we have always carried out. The Regional Office management adopted and also the Concerned Plan Settlements communities approved of it during Kgotla consultations. Also from the experience learned at the ISOCARP program, real and sustainable proposals have been made for the plan aimed at improving the community livelihoods.

14

3.0 Mapping I am also passionate about GIS and Mapping. I have from time to time been engaged for Cartography services and mostly rely on GIS for all my planning and design work. I mostly utilize ArcGIS, Global Mapper and Google Earth Softwares for mapping.

15

3.1 Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme Project (PSUP) – UN-Habitat 2017 The main objective of the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme is to develop urban poverty reduction policies which go in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) targets 7C (to halve by 2015 population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation) and 7D (to achieve significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers). As a member of the PSUP team in Botswana, I was tasked with designing high quality and presentable Maps for the Urban Profile documents. These maps included the Land Tenure Map of Botswana and Slum Profile and locations Maps of Gaborone, Francistown and Lobatse Towns respectively.

16

3.2 Travel Safety Maps In 2017 I was engaged by Landmarknews on Upwork online as a freelancer to create travel safety maps indicating Travel Safety off-limits area in different countries across the world. I created over 30 maps which were published on Travel Safety Briefs and sold to travelers worldwide. I designed these maps using ArcGIS-ArcMap. The data used in these maps was sourced from various open online sources such as openstreetmap.org. Upon completion of the maps the client was impressed with the timely delivery and level of quality of maps. The project contract is still ongoing.

17

4.0 Design Workshops To develop my planning and design passion, I have made it a point to take part in various workshops and programmes around the World; among them being ISOCARP Young Planning Professionals.

18

4.1 Industrial Heritage and Regional Revival – YPP Participant ISOCARP Young Planning Professionals Workshop—2018 July 21st – 28th, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China I had the privilege of being selected for the second time to participate in another ISOCARP YPP Programme in Xi’An, China 2018. I was part of the only 4 international participant with other 20 Chinese YPPs. The overall theme for Xi’An YPP workshop is ‘Industrial Heritage and Regional Revival’, making the workshop an important entry point for ISOCARP to discuss Sustainable Development Goals Target 11.4 which calls for “making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by strengthening efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage”. Envisioned as an urban laboratory to integrate heritage conservation agendas with those of sustainable urban development, the workshop focused on Textile City as one of the ‘156 Project’ sites. The workshop searched for best practices on preserving the industrial heritage, while taking into consideration the potentials on developing locational advantages and resource superiority, promoting industrial upgrading and integrative use of land and the ecological environment, protecting urban morphology including the buildings and environs of factory areas and bridging the old with newly constructed projects in the near surrounding and creating new landmarks in the eastern part of the city. The proposals focused on innovation design accelerating the pace of regional old city renewal and providing ideas for transformations of other factory areas.

4.2 Rethinking the Clyde Waterfront-ISOCARP Youth Planning Professionals Think Deep Program, 23 October 2016 – 28 October 2016 Glasgow, United Kingdom Selected as a Participant for the ISOCARP Youth Planning Professionals Think Deep Program. I was the only African at the program and only Motswana to have ever been selected and participated in the program. The selection was based on individual professional merit and portfolio. The Program was themed; Rethinking the Clyde Waterfront Connecting the infrastructure development into integrated above and below ground urban design for the brownfields redevelopment schemes The project ‘Rethinking the Clyde Waterfront‘ was jointly chosen by ISOCARP, ITACUS and representatives of the local partners from Glasgow City Council.

20 Young Professionals including 10 urban designers/planners/ architects and 10 civil engineers/underground space specialists under the guidance of tutors from ISOCARP, ITACUS and Think Deep UK discussed the topic and designed practical solutions from the 23-28 October 2016. The presentation we gave as Young Planning Professionals on the last day of the workshop was received very positively and with great interest by local planners from Glasgow. The report produced by the young professional would further be presented at the forthcoming ASK (Accessing Subsurface Knowledge) event in Glasgow, and also the COST Final conference at Bucharest, in March 2017; also be published into the ISOCARP website for appreciation by everyone across the world. I shared the experience learned from the program with my colleagues and applied them to different projects back home, e.g. Sefhare Structure Plan. https://isocarp.org/young-planning-professionals-programme/national-yppworkshops/ypp-workshop-glasgow-uk-oct-2016-rethinking-clyde-waterfront/

5.0 Reports I have been engaged in producing reports for different projects I worked on.

23

5.1 Declaration of Planning Area 2017 Okavango Sub District The need to declare the Okavango Sub District area as a planning area comes from it being a fragile area and comprising of sensitive tourist sites which require great protection. This protection can only be assured through some degree of development control. Declaring Planning areas is contained in Part IV Section 15 of the new Town and Country Planning Act which mandates the Minister of Lands and Housing to declare planning areas. Therefore with these provisions I Facilitated and headed up team for Carrying out Community Consultations of 33 Villages in the Okavango Sub District on Declaring their area a planning area in a short period of 10 days. This fast tracking has saved the Department time and money that was initially not budget for. The consultations entailed sacrificing and waking up early at 6am everyday and travelling a minimum of 120 Km gravel distance in the vast sub district of the Okavango, also utilizing personal airtime to arrange the consultation meetings. A report of consultation was compiled immediately upon return from consultations and shared with concerned stakeholders.
