he IAA Show in Hanover is a great thought starter, especially when it comes to adding value and improving efficiency to your vehicle selection. Australians have been adding more European vehicles to their fleets in recent years, and as a consequence we are now one of the few markets where buyers have access to products from all over the world. France, Spain Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Argentina, India, Thailand, Japan and China are just some of the countries sending their products Down Under. As well as the launch of the latest versions of new models and facelifted upgrades of older vehicles, the IAA provides all levels of the auto industry a chance to showcase their products, enabling the visitor to make sure that someone hasn’t invented a better mousetrap since they last enquired. As Hyundai launched its new HS350 van way ahead of its actual introduction to the market, the company took the additional step of stating that vans would be available completely fitted out with shelving and racking to suit individual company applications. This a little unusual as most van makers leave the interior fit out to the aftermarket, other than possibly offering plywood panelling to protect the interior walls or floors. The European aftermarket offers a wide range of products from companies that include, shelving, racking, slide out drawers, and even including wash basins and soap containers for the workers to clean up after the job finishes. This is one area of the industry where the buyer doesn’t necessarily have to look overseas for inspiration. Australian companies such as Vehicle Accessory Specialists offer a wide range of interior custom-built options under the Van Shelving Systems brand. While the European systems are undoubtedly well made, there’s a definite advantage of buying Australian made products built with Australian steel from an Australian owned company. 10

t’s easy to dismiss the option of running electric delivery vans around the inner city as being a five-minute fad, largely because we’ve heard the rhetoric from various manufacturers on zero emissions transport, but we haven’t seen any firm commitment. Mercedes-Benz toyed with an electric-drive Vito, but as Delivery found during the launch of the new Vito in Spain, the German manufacturer has lost interest in the project following the lack of interest of its customers. Renault appears to be made of stronger stuff, with its electrically motivated Kangoo now having sold 14,000 units globally and the company keen to expand the concept to new markets, including Australia. Australia Post has now taken the first two electric Kangoos into its national fleet, and over the next few months will be evaluating the concept and listening to feedback from its drivers. As Delivery magazine likes

to remain one jump ahead of our readers, we took the opportunity during a recent visit to Melbourne to toddle about the inner city and see for ourselves whether the Kangoo Z.E. is a viable alternative to petrol or diesel power. Renault has sensibly not followed the path of Nissan with its electric Leaf passenger car by suggesting the driver might like to indulge in feel-good games while at the wheel by watching outlines of trees growing on the dashboard display. The Nissan driver can practice light-footed tendencies to show they are at one with their environmental responsibilities as their dashboard tree sprouts leaves. Not so for Renault. The Kangoo Z.E. is just a van, plain and simple. Kangoo Z.E. is the same size as the petrol or diesel version, has a flat floor in the cargo area, barn doors at the rear and sliding doors at the side. The doors open with a key and you stick the key in the ignition slot to release the steering lock and activate the “engine”.

POWER PACK This where it starts to become different. The dashboard lights up but there’s no noise. Push forward the gear selector, release the park brake, and press the accelerator pedal and the van moves forward. Still no noise. Brake to a stop, select reverse, park or whatever and it steers just like a conventional van. Still no noise. Without the noise of an engine or gearbox there’s an air of peace and tranquillity about driving the Kangoo Z.E. If you manage to convince yourself that the sound insulation is the best you’ve ever encountered in a vehicle, then you will just point the van where you want to go and accelerate when you want to go faster. In traffic streams of all types the Kangoo Z.E. is well able to keep up with the peak-hour struggle. Lift off the accelerator and the regenerative braking comes into effect, slowing down the van in much the same way as an exhaust brake or engine brake, but still no noise. As the van slows under regenerative braking the electric current produced flows back into the battery. This happens without driver intervention. Within five minutes it’s our opinion that no driver will object to piloting an electric van around town. Rather, they will consider it a benefit, as it’s no longer a buzz box of transmitted noise.

Driving has never been as simple or as silent. It’s the ideal inner city transport for light goods or local commutes.

Power happens courtesy of a 44 kW (60 hp) electric motor that produces 226 Nm of torque. There are no gears to select other than forwards and reverse and speed varies just by the amount the driver presses the accelerator pedal. Zero to 50 km/h happens in 5.5 seconds and the Kangoo Z.E. can top 100 km/h within 22.4 seconds. Under the European test criteria the range is listed as being 179 km, but realistically for around town operations you are looking at a range of 80-125 km. The van spins in a circle within 11.9 metres diameter, weighs 1505 kg and can carry a payload of 640 kg with a cargo volume of 4.0 cubic metres. ABS, emergency brake assist and emergency brakeforce distribution are included as standard. In purely practical terms we can’t see any disadvantages in running a Kangoo Z.E., only benefits. At the end of your typical day’s travel you plug the van into the mains and it’s all ready to go again tomorrow when you return to work. There’s no fuel cost as in petrol of diesel, virtually no servicing charges and it’s a peaceful place in which to spend your day.

Nobody has yet mentioned cost, but, with all the aforementioned benefits, Delivery sees Kangoo Z.E. as being the first practical application of usable electric drive so far introduced into Australia. If you want to make your mark on being progressive, give Renault a call at its head office in Mulgrave and start talking.

hink back 20 years and you’ll be hard pressed to remember anyone in your neighbourhood that owned a Hyundai car. Here is an automaker that didn’t exist before 1967, but, as the company sales records show, Hyundai today is a force not to be underestimated.

Hyundai is currently cementing a sales acceptance that sees the brand rank 3rd overall in the Australian market, for the 5th consecutive month, equating to a 9.8% market share. That share is the largest since April 1999 (11.7%) and is a record for the brand as a fully-owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company (V-Facts YTD August). Ranked 2nd overall for passenger car sales in August, its performance reflected the 27th consecutive month of year-on-year sales growth for Hyundai in Australia. In the light commercial sector Hyundai has seen its iLoad van and iMax people mover take No. 1 spot on more than one occasion, except when a lack of supply meant that it dropped back to enable Toyota to once again take the crown with its HiAce. Right now, the iLoad is holding 2nd place in the sales race with 27.5 percent market share, with the iMax enjoying No. 1 spot with 35.2 percent market share in the sub $55,000 segment. Delivery has shown strong support through the years for the iLoad, awarding it the prestigious Van of the Year crown on more than one occasion. While we wait for a new updated version in the relatively near future, the company has again reason to celebrate as it launches a completely new larger light commercial onto our market called the H350.

up Hyundai increases the pressure on the van market with the launch of the H350

The preview of the H350 took place in front of stiff competition at the IAA Show in Hanover Germany, where Allan Rushforth, senior vice-president and chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor Europe, gave Delivery a unique insight into what Australia can expect as soon as the right-hand-drive models become available. “From 2008 to 2012 Hyundai doubled its market share in Europe. With the debut of the new H350 rear-wheel-drive to compete in 3.5 tonnes segment, we have a product that can compete on equal terms in the three options of cab/chassis, van and 14 to 15-seat passenger bus,” said Mr. Rushforth. “Our timing sees a phased introduction starting in the first half of 2015 with Western Europe and then expanding to other European markets in the second half of 2015,” he added.

STEPPING UP Joining Allan Rushforth in Hanover was Brandon Yea, who, in 2013, left his role as president of Kia Motors Europe to take responsibility for the commercial vehicle export business at Hyundai. “The Hyundai H350 will play a significant role in the future of our commercial business globally. The LCV business in Europe is forecast to grow by 20 percent in the next five years. Now is the right time to launch this vehicle, and it puts Hyundai Motors in a new position to compete,” Brandon told Delivery. So far, Hyundai has only previewed the van version, but all three options share the same engine and driveline comprising a 2.5-litre, turbocharged and intercooled Euro 5 compliant diesel four-cylinder engine. This engine is believed to be a derivative of the engine from the iLoad and features a new-generation common-rail injection system and electronically controlled turbocharger. There is a choice of power and torque outputs that offer maximum power of 110 kW and 125 kW produced at 3,600 rpm, with peak torque ratings of 373 Nm from 1,350 to 2,750 rpm, or 422 Nm rated from 1,500 to 2,750 rpm. Delivery’s view is that Australia will only take the higher output version. Currently, the first transmission on offer is a six-speed manual, but the company is known to be working on an automatic option. “Because Hyundai tends to prefer to develop its own transmissions, we sometimes face a delay in being able to introduce both manual and auto options from day one. But it is in our plans,” confirmed Allan Rushworth. With a GVW of 3.5 tonnes there’s nothing sub standard about the launch spec’ of the H350. Hydraulic powerassisted rack and pinion steering, MacPherson strut front suspension, and parabolic, single-leaf-sprung rear suspension with gas dampers is standard fare for this type of vehicle. The H350 van derivative will offer two wheelbase options – 3,435 mm and 3,670 mm, with overall length dimensions of 5,515 mm and 6,195 mm – to provide cargo volumes of 5.5 and 6.2 cu. metres. The cargo payload options are 1,336-1,365 kg, and 1,233-1,262 kg for the higher volume version. The maximum towing weight for a braked trailer is 2.5 tonnes. Internally, the cargo area provides a load length of 3,100 mm, with a width of 1,795 mm, an internal floor to roof height of 1,955 mm, and a deck height of 695-700 mm.

The cabin interior is spacious, as I found when sitting next to a member of the media from Eastern Europe who owned up to being a not inconsiderable 2.02 metres in height. Not one to doubt when he said he was comfortable. A multifunction steering wheel houses audio and multi-display controls to alter information shown on the dashboard display. Cruise control and telephone hands-free functions can also be controlled from the steering wheel. Much attention has been paid to interior noise, with Hyundai claiming a cab noise suppression level of 50 dBA at idle and just 70 dBA at cruise speed. The low interior noise levels were achieved through the addition of high-density floor mat material, designed to effectively absorb sound, as well as extra-thick interior and exterior insulation between the dashboard and cabin. The front wheel arches are covered with wheel guards to limit the ingress of road noise from the vehicle’s tyres. Work to strengthen the chassis and engine mounting points has helped to further dampen idling vibrations, while a specially-designed axle damper and propeller shaft reduce engine and booming noise under acceleration.

FEATURE

T

he future of Volkswagen is set to alter dramatically in 2015 as the company focus expands to encompass commercial vehicles in all categories. Admittedly, most casual observers probably already consider VW to be a major player in the world of cargo moving, but with the appointment of Andreas Renschler as the head of a new heavy commercial division, that’s all about to change. Until now, VW has held an enviable reputation in the one-tonne medium panel van market with its Transporter range, plus it’s done well to highlight ability in the small van segment. Thanks to the success of the Caddy, other manufacturers such as Renault, Peugeot and Fiat have jumped in and globally we’ve seen this segment expand and generate substantial interest in the 750 kg payload area. Moving up the weight range into large vans and the Crafter has always played the disadvantaged sibling to Mercedes-Benz and the Sprinter. At first glance both vans in this joint venture between Germany’s largest manufacturers looked pretty much identical. But on closer examination the result was far more than simply badge engineering. It was Mercedes-Benz that always held the upper hand in terms of specification, with full-fluid automatics on Sprinter versus AMTs (Automated Manual Transmissions) on Crafters, and a continual addition of electronic intervention systems that made the Sprinter the pick of the pack. Admittedly, both versions went down the same production line in the same factory in Dusseldorf or Ludwigsfelde, but, with VW not really focusing on adding much by way of an improved specification, the purchase decision probably resulted from which make had best relationship and the nearest dealership to the customer.

Eventually something had to change, and change it did, with Mercedes-Benz giving notice to Volkswagen that from April 2015 it would no longer facilitate production of the Crafter in its factories alongside the Sprinter. A recent visit to the Dusseldorf assembly plant showed some very persuasive reasons why this impasse occurred. The Dusseldorf plant is currently at full capacity, and to make more Sprinters means making less Crafters. Not making Crafter at all means adding ten percent additional Sprinter capacity, so by canning the Crafter the problem of having to build a new plant goes away and your competitor is itself disadvantaged. Volkswagen took the news well, and, with expansion in mind, in April 2014 the company committed to building a new manufacturing centre at Wrzesnia, Poland, an EU country that already plays home to the manufacture of the Caddy and the Transporter T5 in Poznan, just 50 km to the west of the new site. Production of an all-new Crafter is scheduled to start at Wrzensia in the fourth quarter of 2016. All indications are that this will be a totally new product, matching the size of the current Crafter but offering Euro 6 engines and providing a torque converter automatic option probably with ZF, rather than trying to extend the dual-clutch AMT that has never achieved star status in commercial vehicles. Revitalising the large van model range is only the start of a new era for Volkswagen. The new heavy commercial vehicle division kicks off with Andreas Renschler at the helm from April 2015, at which point the group will gather momentum through the absorption of the Scania and MAN brands and align further expansion through the existing heavy-truck business that includes the VW Constellation in Brazil.

VW TODAY It is known that Herr Renschler, who took Daimler Trucks to global domination before accepting the VW job offer, has been looking at adding new talent to the team. In the interim, we are already seeing signs of product consolidation, with the recent announcement that Scania will provide MAN with its Opticruise AMT as a replacement for the current ZF-AS Tronic. Undoubtedly, there will be more product rationalisation to come. Coming back to the present day, and it’s obvious that while it’s always been the car division at VW that took the podium under the spotlight, often to the detriment of the light-commercial division, the truckies are going to be after a lot more attention in the future. Right now, though, the product range is not going to go through a lot of change in the immediate future, providing Delivery with the opportunity to review the options available in Australia before the next-generation Transporter and the all-new Crafter break cover. In the small-van segment Caddy remains a clear leader, generating a market share of 56.5 percent for YTD September, and growing. Caddy is itself a great vehicle, but so too are other small vans from different manufacturers, it’s just that competitors such as Citroen and Peugeot have been woefully inept in marketing their products. Only Renault with its Kangoo has jumped into the fray with any conviction, and consequently this capable little French van is now enjoying a market share in numbertwo spot of 20 percent.

The same VW/Renault challenge also takes place in the medium-van segment, with VW’s Transporter and Renault’s Trafic each averaging around 9.0 percent of this segment. The traditional performer here is HiAce, which currently holds the lead with 41 percent, ahead of Hyundai with the iLoad and 28 percent. With Hyundai having been severely cut back on its iLoad allocation from South Korea, free supply would have undoubtedly resulted in Toyota losing face and market share. Citroen’s Dispatch and Mitsubishi’s Express are no longer on sale, Mercedes-Benz manages just less than 6.0 percent with Vito and Ford is struggling with the Transit Custom at just over 4.0 percent. In the large van segment it's Sprinter all the way, closing on 20 percent of the segment ahead of Renault with the Master at 8.0 percent, Fiat with the Ducato at 7.5 percent and IVECO with the Daily at 5.1 percent. Ford limps in with the Transit at 3.2 percent, a far cry from the days when it led this segment, and just ahead of VW with the Crafter at 2.4 percent. This is a tough segment when it comes to competition, as these Euro vans go head to head with Japanese cabover light trucks. So far the cabovers with unique bodywork hold the majority of sales in this segment, but the ratio splits are changing, showing an increasing market interest in fully enclosed vans. In the ute market its Volkswagen’s Amarok, built in Hanover and Argentina, up against just about every major global competitor. Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Holden, Toyota and Isuzu Ute all manufacture in Thailand, Foton and Great Wall hail from China, Ssangyong from South Korea and newcomer TATA manufactures in India. Our pick of the VW Amarok range centres on those models with the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. As the Delivery Magazine ute of the year for 2014, it is a class leader.

With Holden looking to grow its market share purely on the basis of its imports, once the company ceases production of the Australian products, it may only be a matter of time before it includes the light commercial range already available under the Vauxhall and Opel badges in Europe as an option for the Australian market. Until the current scenario changes, Holden dealers have but one light commercial product in the form of the Colorado.

GROUND WORK

DAVE WHYTE REVIEWS THE LATEST HOLDEN COLORADO

Over the past decade the typical application of a ute has switched emphasis from something that was used mainly for work and they have become more of a lifestyle vehicle. While most models are still capable of carrying or towing a decent load, the reality is that many will rarely see a hard day’s work. More often it will be the occasional trip to the tip or garden centre, or maybe towing the boat or caravan on the long weekend. I can hear all the tradies out there crying foul at this, but in reality the tradies’ market only makes up a part of the overall ute sales numbers these days. This shift has been welcomed by the manufacturers, and many have adjusted their offerings to suit. Some, including Holden, have gone even further, and adapted the ute platform to accommodate the whole family, doing away with the rear tray entirely. The Holden Colorado range offers five different model variants across the 4x2 and 4x4 ute and cab/chassis categories. In addition to the commercial range, there is also the seven-seat wagon, known as the Colorado 7. The different trim levels and the availability of a peoplemover/SUV demonstrate how the Colorado is not simply designed as a work vehicle, though it does still retain many attributes that make it appealing to the workforce. All models are powered by the 2.8-litre Duramax 2 diesel engine, which delivers 147 kW and up to 500 Nm of torque. However, this high torque output is only available with the six-speed automatic transmission, with the engine in the manual variants limited to 440 Nm. To see just what the Colorado range has to offer, I took the keys to a 4x4 dual-cab ute with the sixspeed auto transmission, for a week of work and play. The Colorado LTZ is the top-of-the-range offering, and comes with all the mod cons and comfort features you would expect from a flagship model. These include climate control, optional leather seats and a large touchscreen multimedia unit with Bluetooth connectivity. External features include a soft tonneau cover, polished alloy sports bar, and side steps, the latter of which are very necessary for those of us with young kids. While they weren’t really needed for adults to enter the cab, the floor height from the ground meant they were very handy for persons of a shorter stature.

On the safety front, the Colorado is fitted with driver, front passenger and curtain airbags, electronic stability control (ESC) and mounting points for child seats in the rear. The LTZ also has Projector HID headlights, front fog lights and LED lights at the rear, making nighttime vision very good. The first thing I noticed about the Colorado, as is common among the current era of utes, was its sheer size. The new breed of utes have grown to be the size of a light truck, and while this does have some benefits in areas such as towing capacity and ground clearance, it can be a bit of a nuisance. The height of the tub means it can be difficult to load or unload by hand. The top edge of the Colorado tub was at my chest height, and so anything that was sitting in the centre of the tub could only be removed by dropping the tailgate and climbing in, not exactly glamorous for a bloke of my size and shape. Size is also a factor in visibility from the driver’s seat, though the Colorado didn’t seem to suffer too badly here. Forward vision is good from the high seating position, and large mirrors provide good sight down either side. The centre-mounted rear view mirror is good for watching the following traffic, but not so much for reversing in tight spots. With even an average parking space being a tight spot for a vehicle of this size, the rearward reversing camera is a very handy piece of kit. I found it especially helpful for hooking up a trailer, with the camera positioned directly over the tow ball. The Duramax 2 engine seems a little rattly at idle, and engine noise is obvious at low speeds. Once up to highway speed though, it is barely noticeable with the engine ticking over at around 1700 rpm. This left plenty of reserve power for overtaking, and provided plenty of torque for pulling up hills without the need for a lower gear. I did find myself selecting manual mode a few times to maintain the right gear where the driveline wanted to go down a gear. The six-speed made very smooth gear shifts, loaded or empty, and provided for smooth acceleration. This is important if you plan to use the full 3.5-tonne towing capacity, as it reduces the shock through the coupling and chassis, and gives a better ride for whatever is on the trailer. DELIVERY

t Delivery we love technology, and when it relates to new and significantly improved vehicles we see it as a winner on several counts. For the buyer it means higher safety levels and better efficiency, for the environment it means lower emissions, and for the driver it means a much improved working environment to make the day in their “office” a better experience.

While Daimler and Volkswagen perform the light commercial market equivalent of the “Battle of the Titans” to achieve global domination, the launch of the new Vito and its upmarket V-Class people mover represents one of the most significant events in recent years. To see what the Australian buyer can expect when the range launches into our market in 2015, Delivery headed to Spain to experience first hand what we consider to be an absolute game changer for the medium van and people-mover market. Vittoria in Spain is the location of Mercedes-Benz Vito and V-Class production. The factory was founded back in 1954 as a DKW production plant, was purchased by MercedesBenz in 1986 and started producing the Vito range in 1995. Recent investment of $280 million (AUD) enabled the Vittoria plant to start production of the latest Vito in August of this year. Thanks to a very enthusiastic and highly professional workforce there’s every reason to believe this is one model range that will cement the future of Spain as a highly valuable manufacturing base.

Think of the new Vito as being the point where prestige car meets working van. The Mercedes-Benz team under the leadership of Dr. Klaus-Jürgen Benzinger has brought the accepted technical sophistication of its prestige and luxury cars to the van market, and the result is impressive to the level that other manufacturers are going to find it hard to match the result. As of now, the new Vito comes in three distinctly different categories, offering the choice of front-wheel-drive, rearwheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. Although the previous Vito was engineered for electric propulsion, a lack of buyer interest in this green power segment has left this option off the order books, at least for the current development cycle. According to Dr. Benzinger the development of the front-wheel-drive Vito was purely cost driven, with the easier assembly of the East/West transverse design of transaxle making for faster and cheaper production. Fitted with a 1.6-litre, turbocharged and intercooled, four-cylinder diesel available in a selection of power and torque outputs, there’s no automatic transmission option and all models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox.

It also takes the buyer into the next round of emissions levels with all 140 kW versions of the 2.1-litre engine conforming to Euro 6 legislation, using AdBlue (DEF) to minimise CO2 production at the tailpipe. The AdBlue tank is 11.5 litres, enough for an average 10,000 km in normal use before refilling. Gross vehicle weights range from 2.5 to 3.2 tonnes, providing payloads of up to 1,369 kg. Vito is available in two wheelbases, three body lengths and up to four weight variants as a panel van, crew cab van (with centre seats) and as a people mover.

VACANCES

Feel like a holiday with French style?

David Garcia reports on the latest Renault Motorhome he Australian light commercial vehicle market is a tough nut to crack. The van segment has a committed handful of players, and if you add a cab/ chassis to the model mix, you’re suddenly up against the dominance of the Japanese with their expansive ranges and strong market entrenchment.

A saturated marketplace hasn’t stopped manufacturers from trying to succeed, however. Renault extended its LCV range in 2012 with the front-wheel-drive, 3.5-tonneGVM Master van, and followed this late last year with the launch of the 4.5-tonne-GVM Master rear-wheel-drive cab/chassis.

Joining the more compact Kangoo and mid-sized Trafic models and the Master van, the rear-wheel-drive cab/chassis derivative impressed us enough to award it Delivery’s 2014 Light Truck of the Year.

Judges particularly liked the vehicle’s high standard specification levels, driver comfort and ease-of-use. Renault Australia LCV Model Line Manager, Lyndon Healey, said that the model was gaining traction with buyers.

“It’s an ideal vehicle for tradespeople, garden nursery supply work and the like,” Mr. Healey said. “Those wanting to put a tonne and a half in the back, or need a bigger space for volumetric loads are finding the Master cab/chassis a very good fit.” While it’s all well and good to be keeping the tradies happy, Renault realised that the Master platform had far greater sales potential, especially given its long-standing position as Europe’s number-one LCV manufacturer, and as a successful supplier to the European motorhome market. At a recent reveal event in Melbourne, Renault shared its ambitions, partnering with Melbourne-based motorhome builder, Sunliner, to provide a glimpse of what the Master platform could offer the RV market. The motorhome-optimised cab/chassis is fully imported from France with an open back-of-cab, and the cab features standard door mirrors with extendable arms ready for the wider motorhome body. The vehicle’s electronics have also been designed with motorhome builders in mind – there’s a six-way connector under the dashboard, a two-way 12 V (40 A) connector located in the right-hand B-pillar, as well as an engine running signal and additional earth cabling. There are multiple locations on the dashboard to install switches for auxiliary equipment, a 110 A battery and a 185 A alternator, connectors for additional batteries and an extra-long wiring loom. The Master’s chassis structure also comes, from the factory, strengthened against twisting, resulting in less local modifications leading to a more efficient and cost-effective build process. For the end-user, there’s plenty to like about the Master cab/chassis as a motorhome platform, particularly for those wanting a model that can be driven on a car driver’s licence.

BON VACANCES As per the regular cab/chassis, power comes courtesy of a Euro-5-rated, 2.3-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 150 hp (110 kW) and 350 Nm of torque at a low 1,500-2,750 rpm. The availability of maximum torque low in the rev range provides comfortable cruising, good fuel efficiency and ample grunt for a three-tonne towing capacity.

Realising that drivers of motorhomes can spend many hours on the road, the Master’s cabin is not wanting for driver and passenger comfort and convenient features. The seats are eight-way adjustable with arm rests; optional are swivelling bases allowing the seats to be rotated to face the living area. The audio system provides Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and audio streaming as well as a USB audio input. Additional cost options include satellite navigation, automatic wipers and headlights, side airbags and fog lights. The Master motorhome cab/chassis is available in a range of 10 standard or optional metallic colours directly from the factory, and is covered by Renault’s three-year/200,000 km factory warranty. Parts coverage for the model will be broad, with replacement components available via the Australia-wide Renault-Nissan Alliance, with Renault providing greater than 95 percent first pick.

The motorhome-optimised cab/chassis is fully imported from France, complete with standard door mirrors with extendable arms, ready for the wider motorhome body.

Further aiding fuel economy are standard Continental low rolling-resistance tyres and optimised gear ratios, and, to help the driver keep fuel use down, a gear change indicator light on the dash prompts early up-shifts. Power is driven to the dual rear wheels via either a smoothshifting six-speed manual transmission or there’s also the option of a six-speed automated manual from renowned transmission builder, ZF.

Renault believes that the Master’s rearwheel-drive configuration, dual wheels and optional mechanical Eaton differential lock, will provide owners with added stability and traction on unsealed roads and on wet grass in caravan parks. On the safety front, standard features include anti-lock brakes with EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and ESP (electronic stability control) with rollover mitigation programming. Traction control is fitted. Dual front airbags are also standard and side airbags are available as an option (if swivelling front seats are not selected). The seatbelts feature pre-tensioners and load limiters.

hen it’s important to maintain your street cred, there’s nothing that makes it more difficult than having a Mum-Bus parked in the driveway. It sets an immediate implication that nobody in the family actually enjoys driving and the meaning of life revolves around, kids, nappies and school runs. Well, thanks to the V-Class that’s all changed.

The Mum-Bus has gone upmarket, and, with the V-Class, automaker MercedesBenz has introduced a total game changer that brings the people mover into the realms of the prestige car, particularly the Benz C-Class with which the V-Class shares its ideology.

The V-Class is the replacement in the Australian market for the Viano. Scheduled for introduction in mid-2015, Delivery Magazine was the only Australian-

based media invited to experience a unique five-day drive programme that ran from Stuttgart through to the Alsace region of Southern France and then up through Germany to Munich, returning to the Stuttgart start point. The selection of the route produced two distinctly different driving experiences. After the run from Stuttgart in Germany and crossing the border into France to Strasbourg, the touring opportunity around the Alsace wine region provided a continuous selection of spectacular villages, with architecture dating back over 500 years. Houses and converted barns, with a plethora of wineries, showed how this region should be on the list for any Australian with a week to spare. For those keen on exercise there are also spectacular walks of varying length, clearly marked and with different degrees of difficulty, all usually concluding at a local restaurant. The roads through this region are narrow, with yet narrower roads through the towns and villages. This makes for some interesting passing manoeuvres and the need to be very aware of the width and length of your vehicle.

When heading forwards there are again parking sensors in the front bumper and blind spot warning radar that shows a red signal in each door mirror as vehicles come up alongside on the road. Adaptive cruise control, called Distronic PLUS by Mercedes-Benz, means that not only will the car reduce speed if it detects a slower moving vehicle travelling ahead in the same lane on the highway, it will maintain a safe distance behind at the lower speed until either the vehicle in front moves out of the way or the driver overtakes. Adaptive cruise control systems can be a significant safety benefit, especially if there is a risk of inattention on the part of the driver, as it reduces the opportunity of rear-ending the vehicle in front. The system can and does apply the brakes if the driver simply is not concentrating and the radar guidance considers an accident may occur. The V-Class maintains rear-wheel-drive, but from December this year in Europe will also be available with all-wheel-drive, catering for those trips to the snow. This is an on-road safety advantage and not to be confused with the all-wheel-drive alternative provided by an SUV or fully blown 4WD off-roader. In Europe it is also available in a choice of two wheelbases and three body lengths with seating capacity ranging up to eight passengers. Up front under the bonnet is a new 2.1-litre, four-cylinder diesel with two-stage turbocharging and intercooler that conforms to Euro 6 emissions requirements. Called the V250 BlueTEC, the engine produces maximum power of 140 kW and a peak torque rating of 440 Nm. In the European markets there are two other versions of the same engine available with Euro 5 emissions ratings that offer different power and torque ratings, with 100 kW and 330 Nm of torque or 120 kW and 380 Nm of torque. Given the intended exclusivity of the V250 V-Class in Australia, Delivery expects the powertrain choice to be limited to only the V250 Euro 6 engine. This rating offers a 28 percent gain in economy when compared to the previous 3.0-litre V6, with reduced exhaust emissions in 2WD form of 149 g/km. When launched onto the Australian market, the V-Class is going to be one of the front-runners when it comes to conforming to Euro 6 emissions levels. To achieve these green credentials the 2.1-litre features Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), using Ad/Blue (DEF). The use of AdBlue, known in the US as DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), involves automatically injecting a solution into the exhaust system to remove or reduce the amount of Nitrous Oxides in the exhaust flow. This process requires a separate tank to hold the AdBlue/DEF fluid with its own filler cap, mounted alongside the diesel fuel cap.

V-Class is full of electronic intervention systems to make your piloting through narrow spaces as easy and safe as possible. When going backwards there are reverse warning sensors in addition to the rear-vision camera that displays space and parking line guidance on a wide screen on the dashboard. The same rear-vision camera can also zoom down onto the tow ball should you be trying to reverse onto a trailer hitch.

On average, the V-Class is expected to run with enough AdBlue capacity for up to 10,000 km, at which point the driver simply tops up the tank with AdBlue that is obtained at the fuel station. It’s as easy as topping up the windscreen washer reservoir, but if you don’t top up the engine it will downrate on power when it runs out. In case you are wondering, you can only use the proper AdBlue/ DEF fluid. Vehicle service intervals are at 40,000 km.

FUSO’S ALL-ELECTRIC CANTER PROMISES TO SHOW BETTER RESULTS THAN HYBRIDS AND NATURAL GAS. CHRIS MULLETT REPORTS FROM THE IAA SHOW IN HANOVER.

W

atching the continuing development of cleaner emissions strategies that have combined with more fuel efficient engines has been interesting to say the least, given that just a few years ago engineers were claiming that all emissions gains would result in fuel economy suffering dramatically. That prediction did not eventuate, and, with enough development dollars invested in finding better solutions, we’ve seen some really substantial gains in both fuel efficiency combined with lower emissions levels. In the light truck market most of the hybrid activity has been confined to Mitsubishi Fuso and its rival Hino. Both have seen sales where government incentives exist, but in open markets these manufacturers have struggled to find the critical mass necessary to keep these products as a viable option in their respective product ranges. Mitsubishi Fuso used this year’s IAA event in Hanover to showcase some of its latest ideas for improving fuel efficiency, starting with what the company calls “Ecofficiency”, and now available in the Canter range, the top-selling model in the Daimler Trucks portfolio. Ecofficiency comprises a whole raft of measures available as standard for all Canter model variants. There are many different aspects to this: higher injection pressure for even more efficient fuel combustion, low-friction engine oil to reduce in-engine friction, an electromagnetic fan clutch, an optimised cooling system, a start/stop system for the engine, a new axle ratio configuration, low rolling-resistance tyres for the Euro VI models and reduced friction losses in the transmission with manual gearshift. The combination of these strategies has resulted in the latest Canter being up to nine percent more economical than its predecessor, depending on variant and field of application. At the same time, CO2 emissions have been reduced by a similar amount. In line with the general development of common-rail fuel injection systems, Mitsubishi Fuso has increased its fuel injection pressures to 2000 bar, a rise of 25 percent and achieved through fitting a new design of injector. The engine itself has chain-driven twin overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder and is now using an exhaust gas driven turbocharger with variable nozzle turbine, not yet moving to the next possible level of having electrically powered supercharging. 74

The Canter's power and torque outputs remain unchanged following its further development. There are three versions of the 4P10 engine and these are 96 kW at 3000-3500 rpm with 300 Nm at 1300-3050 rpm, 110 kW at 3500 rpm with 370 Nm at 1320-2840 rpm, and 129 kW at 3500 rpm with 430 Nm of peak torque rated at 1600-2860 rpm. Auto stop/start is now standard on all models and this is claimed to reduce fuel consumption in city driving by up to three percent. High-pressure injection and improved torque spreads have enabled engineers to revisit standard rear axle ratios to reduce engine rpm at cruising speed. Most Canter versions now have a longer ratio option, and this selection suits operators that are not running consistently at full gross weights. Where high payloads are the norm, or when towing a trailer or in hilly country, almost all models are available with a ten percent shorter axle ratio. The slightly lesser emissions standards of Euro 5b in light trucks for Europe with GVWs of up to 6 tonnes are achieved by using a combination of exhaust gas recirculation, oxidation catalytic converter and particulate filter. Stepping up to full Euro 6 compliance sees Fuso incorporating the Daimler BlueTec engines with SCR technology. These feature AdBlue injection and a downstream oxidation catalytic converter. The capacity of the particulate filter and the SCR catalytic converter has been increased to meet the stricter requirements of Euro 6. In all models, the particulate filter is configured for the vehicle's lifetime and is maintenance-free, meaning that it never needs to be cleaned or replaced. It is regenerated automatically. In the case of extreme short-distance use, low exhaust gas temperatures may make manual regeneration necessary. A status indicator on the multifunction display indicates this to the driver, should this be the case. A button activates manual regeneration. Moving up the Canter range in terms of technology is the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid. In typical urban operation cycles the Eco Hybrid achieves fuel savings of up to 23 percent. Compared to the previous model, the already low fuel consumption has been reduced further whilst CO2 emissions have also been cut through including the previously mentioned move to a longer axle ratio and an optimised gearshift strategy. The Canter Eco Hybrid starts off from rest using electric power before switching to conventional diesel propulsion. This model also includes engine stop/start and features the Duonic dual clutch transmission, which is unique in this class.

CLEAN CUT The 3.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel produces maximum power of 110 kW and peak torque of 370 Nm and runs to Euro 6 emissions standards using SCR technology and AdBlue (DEF). It is teamed with a 40 kW electric motor that produces peak torque of 200 Nm fully available from start-up. Energy for the electric motor is provided by lithium-ion batteries. The batteries have a capacity of 2.0 Ah and weigh 63.5 kg. Fuso provides a five-year or optional ten-year warranty on all major battery components. Every time the brakes are applied, the batteries are replenished through recuperation, i.e., the conversion of kinetic energy into electric current. The driving strategy for the Canter Eco Hybrid is based on the vehicle starting up and moving off in quiet, electric mode. Then at a speed of around 10 km/h the diesel engine kicks in. Below this speed the diesel engine runs in neutral, supplying power to the ancillary equipment. The electric motor assists the diesel engine when accelerating, even at higher speeds, and start/stop control stops the diesel engine when the vehicle is stationary. Japan is the home of Daimler Trucks' centre of competence for hybrid technology, and, with this experience behind it, Fuso has also been responsible for developing the new battery-electric-powered Canter E-Cell.

100% ELECTRIC

The Canter E-Cell for Europe is manufactured at the Tramagal plant in Portugal and is particularly suitable for use in limited-distance operations in environmentally sensitive areas, for example in city-centre traffic or in eco-zones and pedestrian precincts.

Canter now provides power choices - diesel, diesel hybrid and full electric.
