Positive Thought The past 12 months have brought a strong upturn to the light commercial vehicle market, with strong growth in all sectors. Total sales in the light-duty truck segment set a record, with 11,628 sold, breaking the previous best in this segment that was set back in 2005. Compared to 2016, light-duty truck sales were up 9.0 percent or 959 trucks.

The light-duty van segment also bounced back in 2017 after recording softer sales in 2016, following its recordbreaking year of 2015. In total, 5883 heavy commercial vans were delivered in 2017, up 9.2 percent (497 sales) over 2016. This was a new record for Australian van sales, eclipsing the 2015 mark of 5515 by 6.6 percent (368 vans).

In the small van segment, it was VW Caddy first, followed

by Renault Kangoo. In the medium van segment Hyundai was chasing the Toyota HiAce with its iLoad, followed by Renault’s Trafic almost on par with VW’s Transporter, ahead of Ford’s Transit Custom and Mercedes-Benz with the Vito. The Chinese also made an appearance here with the LDV G10.

Buyers of 4x2 utes favoured the HiLux ahead of Ford’s Ranger, with Isuzu’s D-MAX challenging Mazda’s BT-50 for third place. Step up to the 4x4 ute market and Ranger beat HiLux, with Triton in third place, Colorado in fourth, Navara in fifth, and D-Max in sixth place.

In the larger van and light truck market, Isuzu once again romped home in first place with the N-Series, followed

by Mercedes-Benz with the Sprinter as the first of the Europeans, ahead of Hino, Fuso, the Renault Master and the Fiat Ducato.

These sales figures highlight the importance of trucks and light commercials to the Australian public.

The Internet might be the chosen child at the moment for ordering goods online, but the execution of the order relies on light trucks and vans to deliver to the customer’s door.

As mail order continues to grow, it can only boost sales of light commercials, despite suggestions that drones will start dropping parcels onto doorsteps.

Whether that trend will extend to the Australian buyer depends on how the manufacturers step up to the mark to introduce electric and hybrid options in light commercials, and whether governments, at state or federal levels, introduce incentives to move to greener technology.

The Australian love affair for a ute is also changing, with the range of choice broadening to include right-hand-drive versions of the American alternatives and higher specification levels for the existing Japanese inspired models. Buyers are finally realising that, despite claims of 1000 kg payloads and towing abilities of 3500 kg from ute makers, if you want safety you need to move to the larger US-sourced products or step into a European or Japanese light truck.

Delivery continues its ongoing evaluation of life with a RAM 2500 Laramie, with Stuart Martin putting it through its paces in South Australia with the equestrian set, validating its towing prowess.

As an indication of how the American brands are now gaining favour, we take a first drive of the Nissan Titan, complete with 5.0-litre V8 Cummins Diesel, and we profile news of Holden Special Vehicles offering an Australianised version of the Chevrolet Silverado, plus a tricked-up version of the Holden Colorado. Toyota, having seen the incoming change of emphasis is already suggesting a highly customised Tonka version of the HiLux, which only leaves Ford to introduce a right-hand-drive version of the F-Series to add to the excitement.

Our road test team has been busy keeping up to date with the full range of IVECO Dailys, now moving to Euro 6, plus we review the Series 2 Navara just prior to the launch of the Series 3, the Hyundai Mighty light truck, Mahindra’s latest Pik-Up, the Marco Polo version of the MercedesBenz Vito, and the LDV medium van. Also, up for discussion is the establishment of the Volkswagen Truck & Bus division, which makes for interesting reading.

ack in 2014, Delivery Magazine recommended the first model variants of the Renault Kangoo Maxi Crew as an ideal choice for tradies. With some engine and specification improvements the appeal of the Kangoo grew, and the following year Renault’s small van entrant into the market scored the accolade of Best Small Van.

In 2016 Kangoo repeated its award winning performance by duplicating its selection as Delivery Magazine’s Best Small Van of the Year. Meanwhile, the French manufacturer has not been resting on its laurels, and in November of last year it announced the availability in Australia of the Kangoo Z.E. (Zero Emissions) compact van.

The Renault Kangoo Z.E. arrived in Australia off the back of sales of more than 25,000 examples in Europe to a wide range of users, making it the most popular batterypowered van. With 34.5 percent of Europe’s E.V. (electric vehicle) commercial market, it has been the best seller in its segment in the six years since its European launch.

Renault-Nissan Alliance electric vehicles top the global market with more than half of worldwide sales. In Europe, Renault offers the only electric vehicle range of its kind in the world, with Twizy Cargo, new ZOE Company, new Kangoo Z.E. and Master Z.E. There are currently 120,000 Renault electric vehicles on the road in Europe, including more than 50,000 in France.

The Kangoo Z.E. for the Australian market comes as a long-wheelbase van with a 4.0 cubic-metre volume capacity and 650 kg payload.

The latest version boasts a new high energy density battery mated to a new motor, plus a heat pump and a new charger that is twice as powerful as before. These technologies have resulted in an increase of driving range of more than 50 percent to 270 km.

Charging the Kangoo Z.E. is also faster and easier. Its battery can now be fully charged in as little as six hours, while a one-hour lunch break allows enough time to add a 35 km top-up, helping users to optimise their working day.

Renault’s Kangoo fronts up for work with a diesel auto or full electric mobility

The extended driving range owes much to its new 33 kWh ‘Z.E. 33’ battery. This was developed jointly by Renault and LG Chem and features a significant innovation – upgraded energy density. This means its storage capacity has been increased without any changes to its bulk, so the vehicle’s load carrying capacity is unchanged.

Battery performance has been optimised not by adding extra modules but by improving the chemistry of the battery cells themselves, in order to increase energy density. This major improvement was achieved with no trade-off in terms of reliability, safety or payload.

The Kangoo Z.E. also benefits from a new energy-efficient motor and an optimised electronic battery management system, which limits the electricity consumed by the vehicle during road use, with no detriment to power output.

The all-Renault R60 motor delivers 44 kW (60 hp) and is based on the R90 motor that also powers the ZOE super-mini.

The engine is manufactured at Renault’s Cléon plant in France, the Group’s flagship facility for the production of high added-value engines, motors and transmissions.

The Kangoo Z.E. is also the first LCV to incorporate a heat pump in the climate control system to maintain driving range even in cold weather. This heat pump improves the driving range in cold conditions by restricting the use of electrical resistors that consume both power and range.

By using the pre-conditioning system (the trigger time of which can be adjusted via the vehicle’s steering wheelmounted controls), the new Kangoo Z.E. can be heated, or cooled, in advance when plugged in via the automatic climate control system.

Ever aware of the need to alert pedestrians to the presence of an oncoming vehicle that basically moves about nearly silently, Renault has added Z.E. Voice. This is a safety feature that operates up to speeds of around 30 km/h (above which tyre and road noise would be sufficient to alert pedestrians). The audible warning informs pedestrians and cyclists of the vehicle’s otherwise silent approach.

The sounds it makes were developed in association with organisations for blind and visually impaired people. It’s not known whether this noise generator can copy the sound of a Kookaburra or a love struck Brahman bull for Aussie drivers.

While on the subject of low noise, that’s one of the major attractions of the Z.E. Having driven a Z.E. around the streets of Melbourne, it’s reminiscent of driving a dodgem car at the local fair. Because it has an electric motor, it’s very quick off the mark, but, because of its lack of noise and vibration, there seems to be less effort required to drive it.

The R60 electric motor delivers maximum torque of 225 Nm in a fraction of a second, enabling brisk acceleration and pick-up from low speeds. This level of torque truly comes into its own when the vehicle is fully laden.

Harking back to the dodgem car analogy, there’s no gear changing because it’s just an electric motor spinning faster.

Fortunately, though, the driver should get through the day without other electric vehicles making a dodgem car play to impact broadside and push you to the kerb.

Delivery magazine can predict there could be significant appeal for an electric small delivery van, but, for those with a more conservative approach to their inner city operations, especially if their preference is for an automatic transmission, there are two further options.

The two-pedal gearbox is a development of the DC4 sixspeed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) automated transmission.

The six-speed EDC is an automated dry dual-clutch transmission, which automatically selects the ideal gear for any driving condition by an electronic control unit.

Back in February of last year the Kangoo popped up with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 84 kW at 4500 rpm and peak torque of 190 Nm rated at 2000 rpm. The other option is to go for the recently released 1.5-litre diesel engine version with 81 kW at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 240 Nm rated at 1750 rpm. The common denominator here is a sixspeed automatic Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission.

Gearshift control is of the ‘P-R-N-D’ type and includes an ‘up/down’ ‘manual’ shift mode. A push forward on the gear lever directs the transmission to downshift, with a pull backwards to upshift.

Shifts are smooth and intuitive at all speeds as well as being ultra-fast, with a shift time of just 290 milliseconds.

noticeable in some competitive transmissions, while Hill Start Assist holds the brakes momentarily as the brake pedal is released and the throttle is depressed.

Both the petrol and diesel versions are really pleasant to drive, with Delivery’s preference going for the diesel over the petrol, which seems to be better matched in terms of torque production for the EDC transmission.

If living or working in the inner city, Delivery would happily run with the Z.E. and electric drive, simply because of its efficiency, non-pollution and as it removes the bother of refuelling around town. With off-street parking and a

designated charger, it’s no more of a problem topping up the battery than with a mobile phone.

Vision on all sides is good, comfort levels are high, and there are plenty of inbuilt safety systems to keep your insurance quotes to a minimum.

Activation of ECO Mode on the petrol or diesel versions is by a switch alongside the handbrake and can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 percent through modifying the management of the gearbox ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to shift gear ratios at lower rpm. There are four airbags to protect the occupants and ESC is standard.

Chevy chases a new market as Holden jolts into gear to add a totally new focus to its ute brigade.

I

t took the demise of Holden local manufacturing, plus the end of the HSV specialist vehicle operation and its switch to converting left-hand-drive RAM Trucks under the American Special Vehicles banner, to hammer home the importance of Tom Walkinshaw Racing’s Fusion Limited to long-time bedfellow General Motors.

The decision by Fusion to set up American Special Vehicles and link in with independent distributor ATECO for the supply and marketing of RAM Trucks in the Australian market has obviously hit a nerve with what’s left of the Holden empire, now keen to capitalise on any potential for sales increase in any segment.

As a result of the immense success of the RAM Trucks programme that has seen sales increase by over 31 percent (YTD November 2017 VFacts), GM Holden and HSV has struck a new partnership to level the playing field.

For 2018, that new partnership results in the Chevrolet Camaro and Chevrolet Silverado entering the Australian market to line up against the Ford Mustang and RAM 2500 Laramie and join the HSV produced Holden Colorado SportsCat in what the company calls a potential for a “Showroom Blitz”.

As far as dealership branding is concerned, the existing HSV dealer network will be progressively updated to carry the Chevrolet ‘bow-tie’ logo and branding, as part of Holden’s new dealership of the future programme.

As Tim Jackson, managing director of HSV, explained: “HSV engineering involvement starts and stops with the conversion of the vehicles from left to right-hand-drive.

These are iconic Chevys to the core and we’ll let the famed bow-tie speak for itself.

“SportsCat is a great example of how we can deliver improved on-road and off-road driving dynamics, and combine a great new look with improved vehicle capability and versatility. The segment is about much more than drag-strip times,” said Jackson.

HSV also revealed its intention to introduce a freshened logo concurrent with the introduction of its 2018 range.

The new visual identity offers a more contemporary interpretation of the lion and helmet that has adorned HSV vehicles, and represented the company, since its inception in 1987.

“The Australian market is shifting, and, like Holden, we’re shifting with it. This subtle logo change helps signify a new era of vehicle availability from HSV,” he said.

“But make no mistake, while it’s a new logo, our customers can expect the same uncompromising attitude to introducing exciting vehicles that Australians love to drive,” added Jackson.

Playing to HSV’s niche design and engineering capabilities, the Colorado SportsCat features a raft of styling and chassis enhancements that will position it as the most advanced sports 4x4 on the market.

To be available in two variants – SportsCat and SportsCat+ – the styling enhancements begin with radically modified exteriors featuring all-new fascias and grilles that, with the addition of LED fog lamps and functional tow hooks, combine to deliver two distinctive and sporty frontend appearances.

The SportsCat+ features a rugged “bonnet bulge” while, at the side of the vehicle, prominent wheel arch fender flares, smooth form on SportsCat and castellated on SportsCat+, frame bold 18” x 10” forged alloys wrapped in sports allterrain Cooper tyres.

A hard tonneau, with load-rail provision and quick-release mechanism, combined with a unique sports-bar on SportsCat and sail plane on SportsCat+, enhance the vehicles’ sporty profile, while, at the rear, a prominent “Colorado” tailgate appliqué makes a bold statement.

Both SportsCat models feature HSV sports suspension with the front spring rate stiffened to 110 Newtons/mm.

Its MTV dampers have been tuned around the revised spring rate, with both modifications contributing to a more performance-based handling characteristic.

The styling enhancements don’t end with the exteriors of the vehicles. The interior also comes in for a substantial makeover to deliver premium levels of comfort and style.

In addition to the increased spring rate, front ride height has been lifted by 25 mm. This modification further improves the approach angle of the vehicle, increases ground clearance to the body and reduces the vehicle’s overall rake, delivering a more natural on-road stance.

HSV Sports seats, the front heated, featuring uniquely designed seat foams for optimum support, are wrapped in Jasmine leather and Windsor suede, with this trim combination also adorning the instrument panel. Twinneedle red stitching provides an added highlight, also featuring on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, door trims and centre console cover. Branded floor mats complete the interior style and comfort makeover.

The chassis enhancements continue with the adoption of a Rear De-Coupling Anti-Roll Bar on the SportsCat+.

Developed specifically for the vehicle by HSV’s chassis engineers, the de-coupling rear sway bar improves the higher speed road driving performance of the vehicle by controlling rear roll, and thereby improving overall vehicle balance and turn-in transient response. The de-coupling feature ensures the vehicle’s suspension settings can be optimised for off-road performance.

VANABILITY Chinese manufacturer LDV is chipping into mainstream van supply with a cost-competitive alternative in the form of the G10

I

n the world of automotive envy, it pays to remember that some buyers have no interest in which brand, model or perhaps even colour of vehicle they purchase.

Some, having bought and paid for the new vehicle that will be used by their company, struggle to remember which brand they actually ordered. And really, who can blame them, as the web-based media tends to focus on the exotic but impractical models, while leaving the light commercial vehicles that work for their living devoid of attention at the back of the dealership showroom.

Buying a work vehicle, especially when you have no interest in vehicles in general, is turning into a similar buying experience to that of replacing a washing machine or family refrigerator. Indeed, it has been suggested that where a universal specification covers most requirements, a vehicle could be bought at your local hardware store or even online, at the click of a computer keyboard.

Very few instances exist today where a manufacturer makes a bad product, and with consumer protection laws there’s a certain degree of buyer protection already in the marketplace.

Chinese manufacturer LDV increased its vehicle sales in Australia for 2017 by 67.3 percent over the previous year, and, in respect of the G10, it sold 737 versions of its people mover, eating into the market share of the Hyundai iMAX and Honda Odyssey, which both lost sales.

In the van segment, sales expanded for the G10 from 471 in 2016, to 1108 in 2017, with all vans in this segment showing sales stability, and Renault Trafic and Ford Transit Custom also showing incremental growth.

Current pricing options for LDV see the G10 with turbodiesel and automatic transmission, together with cruise control and steering wheel switching for audio and Bluetooth, selling for the price of a manual at $28,990 drive-away for ABN holders. Warranty is for three years/100,000 km and it comes with 24/7 roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty.

“The auto for the price of a manual has worked extremely well for LDV because it reinforced two critical messages to potential customers – that the G10 is now available with a turbodiesel engine with a sophisticated automatic gearbox, and that it is available with an unrivalled price and specification,” explains Dinesh Chinnappa, general manager of LDV Automotive Australia.

The LDV G10’s 1.9 turbodiesel engine produces 106.5 kW with a peak torque rating of 350 Nm from 1800 rpm.

Buyers can select a six-speed manual gearbox, but, as long as the offer remains open for an automatic at the same price, it seems a foregone conclusion to opt for the self-shifter. In manual form the G10 turbodiesel has an official combined fuel consumption figure of 8.3 l/100 km.

The 5.2-cubic-metre load space accepts two standard pallets and is accessed through sliding side load doors on each side.

Again, there’s more choice for the rear access, between a lifting tailgate and traditional barn doors. All versions of the G10 have a payload above the one tonne benchmark.

Without looking at the styling design closely it would be easy to assume the LDV was actually a Hyundai iLOAD, but there is no connection between the two companies, suggesting that duplication by this Chinese manufacturer is merely a form of flattery.

The standard fit and finish of the interior does not quite match that of a typical Hyundai, but it’s not that far removed either. The cab interior is quiet, it’s easy to get in and out, and once seated it’s comfortable with good levels of vision all round.

There’s not much missing by way of the standard spec, with air conditioning, power steering, cruise control (in the automatic versions), power windows, electric mirrors, 16” alloy wheels, Bluetooth and a quality audio system including a large 7” LCD touchscreen.

Safety levels are looked after with electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, airbags, roll movement intervention, reverse camera, parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. If you want to option up further there is an approved list of accessories such as cargo barriers, easy load roof rack systems, load area lining kits, window kits, towbars and heavy-duty steps, as well as nudge bars and weather shields.

If your annual distance travelled is low and you don’t feel the love for a diesel four-cylinder, there is a choice of two petrol variants. The manual features a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre 105 kW engine, whilst the six-speed ZF automatic boasts a 2.0-litre, twin-cam turbocharged petrol engine that produces maximum power of 165 kW with peak torque rated at 330 Nm. Buying a Chinese-manufactured vehicle is appealing because of the low starting price, and LDV is no exception.

If you are keeping the vehicle for 10 years until you retire, the resale price is irrelevant. However, a low purchase price also results in a low resale price, and if you have a standard three to four-year replacement programme this needs to be factored in to your financial decisions.

VANABILITY A review of the secondhand G10s available showed pricing levels under $20,000 for a one-year-old G10 van that had completed 62,720 km, plus others with around 34,000 km selling at under $19,000.

Another point to watch when having Chinesemanufactured vehicles serviced is that of genuine parts support and availability. All too often Delivery hears of parts supplied for a standard service not being compatible with the model because of a spec change that has not been communicated by the vehicle maker.

With the design of some of the engines having originated from European or Japanese makers such as Mitsubishi, but built in China under licence, it may be possible to source parts more easily by researching which Mitsubishi model used that engine in a previous model. Another word of caution here though, is that, again, parts may not be interchangeable.

LDV is distributed in Australia through ATECO Automotive, which has considerable experience in handling small volume manufacturers and employs staff that understands the marketing expectations of Australian buyers.

Of more concern to buyers is where the Chinese parent has taken the decision to control its own destiny in the Australian market and chosen to manage its own distribution and product support. Attempts to contact any responsible person employed by these manufacturers requires an unsurmountable feat of endurance on the part of the complainant. Despite having head office operations based in Australia, finding a contact number, or person to answer the phone or reply to an email, will test personal levels of patience to biblical proportions.

midst the initial launch hype and much anticipated improvements expected throughout the Nissan Navara upgrades of the past two years, there have been some disappointments, especially with the rear suspension capability.

Nissan’s early mid-life update to the Navara brought the Series II to market in the first half of 2017, and went some of the distance in terms of making improvements to the products bound for the Australian market.

The five-link coil-sprung rear installed under the rump of top-end Series 2 models was upgraded with new dampers, as well as revised rear rebound dampers – the conical bump stops – while the front end also has new dampers.

The result is an improvement, but just how much it’s done and how much more work is needed…..we’ll get to all that.

There’s a Series 3 upgrade on the way and as we go to press with this issue Nissan is still in the planning stage for its introduction, with Delivery Magazine playing its part in the initial analysis of the changes for what is probably Nissan’s most important market outside Thailand, its home base for manufacturing.

The further development work attached to the Series 3 is claimed to extend much further than just cosmetic tweaks in appearances, and as we wait to report on the full implications and improvements to the Navara nameplate, here is what you can expect from the run out version of the Series 2 models.

First, a reminder of the drivetrain, which had not changed from the shift of Series 1 to Series 2. The 1969 kg Navara has a twin-turbo, double overhead cam 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 140 kW of power at 3750 rpm, with 450 Nm of torque available from 1500 to 2500rpm.

BAROSSA BOUND The seven-speed auto is optional and sets the ST-X at a current starting price of $54,490. This is in the ballpark of Ford’s $55,490 XLT Ranger and the Z71 Colorado at $54,990, but overshoots the ageing Mazda BT-50 GT at $52,490 and the more refined and feature-packed Mitsubishi Triton Exceed dualcab (which falls short on braked towing capacity) at $48,000.

The Navara’s seven-speed automatic transmission delivers decent shift quality – if not at lightning speeds – and offers two overdrive gears into which it is all too keen to slip.

The torque delivery of the diesel doesn’t lend itself to such behaviour, which can prompt the driver to make use of the manual change mode on offer by way of the gear selector (not paddles).

The auto would benefit from reprogramming in terms of placing more emphasis on drivability over fuel economy. The fuel economy is certainly impressive, and for many drivers running solo down the freeway they’ll remain more than content with the claimed combined-cycle rate of 7 litres per 100 km. Our time in the dual-cab ute yielded 11.1 l/100 km at an average speed of 26 km/h, showing the 80-litre tank is more in tune with highway running than long distance touring off the beaten track, where slotting into overdrive becomes a rarity.

The latter figure indicates a larger than normal amount of suburban work, with half a tonne of quarry rubble out of a total payload of 941 kg in the tray and not a large amount of time on the open road. On the highway, the top two gears would likely take that real-world average back closer

to the 8.9 l/100 km ADR urban cycle, which is generally more realistic.

The model update has brought with it more robust suspension components and it has made a difference – there’s less tail-dragging when laden, but there are still some question marks over the damping control on big bumps, with or without cargo. Even unladen, large speed bumps could result in tickling the bump stops and residual vertical movement on its suspension – it’s improved, but hopefully the looming model update might enable the Navara to make even more ground when compared to the segment leaders.

The braked towing capacity remains at 3.5 tonnes and the 5.3 m long, 1.9 m wide, 1969 kg Navara has no trouble completing towing tasks – its GCM is 5910 kg. As a general comment on brake ability relating to all utes in this segment, it’s time for an upgrade to four-wheel discs, an advantage recognised by Mercedes-Benz and already incorporated in its X-Class.

The five-seater dual-cab’s steering is light, and that is of benefit when trying to manoeuvre the big ute, especially given the 12.4 m turning circle, and it is four turns lock to lock. What makes that ratio worse is the ongoing presence of the horn pad on the bottom (vertical) spoke of what is otherwise a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Inadvertent toots of the horn when brushed by busy hands in a carpark get on the driver’s nerves as well as creating potential problems with other “wrongly-tooted” drivers.

Once on the open road the ride quality for the most part is class-competitive, sitting on handsome 18-inch alloy wheels (including the spare) and not being overly disturbed by smaller road ruts.

The cabin is easy to access by way of standard side steps and is quiet enough, but is now without a standard sunroof.

The dash is topped with a touchscreen infotainment control panel, which is without Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, but looks after the decent sound system and the integrated satellite navigation, as well as some of the fuel economy functions attached to the trip computer.

There is no shortage of in-cabin storage or access to 12-volt outlets, including one in the dash top open storage tray.

There’s also a 12-volt outlet, USB outlet and an auxiliary plug at the base of the centre stack ahead of another storage area. The driver has to contend with tilt-only steering adjustment, but does get power adjustment for the seat; there’s also a centre information display that has all manner of information but still lacks a digital speed readout.

Leather trim, dual-zone climate control and heated seats keep front occupants comfortable; the rear occupants get vents, which is something of a rarity in this segment, as well as reasonable – if not cavernous – amounts of leg and head room.

The rear seat has a fixed backrest (with the clumsy child restraint anchor strap system) and a flip-up base cushion that reveals a small amount of under-seat storage, but no 12-volt or USB outlets.

Anyone looking to get muddy for work or play can make use of an old-school, part-time 4WD system that gets a rear diff lock and hill descent control, with 228 mm of 30

ground clearance, 32.4 degree approach, 26.7 departure and 23.8 ramp-over angles. The safety features list includes seven airbags (front, side, curtain and a driver’s knee bag), rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, traction and stability control with anti-lock brake-based limited slip diff functions, hill start and descent control and seatbelt use warnings for all five seats.

The ST-X also gets automatic LED headlights (but no rainsensing wipers), front fog lights and LED daytime running lights, keyless entry and ignition, power-folding and heated exterior mirrors and an auto dimming centre mirror, all of which combine to offer the driver good rear vision, although the sliding windows within the rear screen does obscure a little of the rear view but makes up for this by improving ventilation.

The rear tub is a decent size and gets an aesthetics-only sports bar, as well as adjustable tie-down points, a bed liner and 12-volt outlet. As with many tubs, the rear tailgate hinges can get clogged with trapped stones, which inhibit closing, plus the tailgate also needs to be manually key-locked.

The Nissan factory warranty stretches to three years or 100,000 km – with 24-hour roadside assistance. This is not class leading, but the scheduled service intervals are a little better at 20,000 km or 12 months.

There’s no question the suspension changes included in Series 2 have brought the Navara up to the ever-expanding pack of combatants in the dual-cab 4x4 ute market, but it’s still a step behind the field and Series 2 has more ground to make up with the next model update.

DAWN OF A NEW DAILY Ed Higginson moves through IVECO’s Euro 6 introduction to the Daily range

VECO launched its new Daily range back in 2015, achieving worldwide praise and recognition with the award of International Van of the Year at the IAA Hanover show in Europe. For 2018, IVECO has given the Daily van and light truck range several upgrades, through which it has already received the additional accolade of International Van of the Year – 2018 for its ‘Blue Power’ range and Delivery Magazine’s own Technology and Innovation Award.

The Daily range ranks well in the large van sales segment here in Australia, offering the largest volume of any van available on our market at 19.6 m3, the highest horsepower rating of 205 hp, and a van GVM of 7000 kg. However, the competition is strong, both from the van manufactures such as Mercedes, Ford, VW, Fiat and Renault, plus the cab/chassis offerings from Hino, Isuzu and Fuso.

A key part of IVECO improvements has been the introduction of several upgrade packs designed to make it easier for customers to pick a solution tailored to their applications. The various packs come with the names of ‘Business Premium’, ‘Comfort’ or ‘Efficiency’ in addition to individual options also on offer.

To find out how the new improvements have changed the already impressive Daily, Delivery Magazine joined IVECO’s media drive programme around Victoria. Up for review were six variants, being the 35S17 Van, 50C17 Van (12 m3), 50C17 Van (16 m3), 50C17 Cab Chassis (auto), 50C17 Cab Chassis (manual), and the 50C21 Cab Chassis. All vehicles were loaded so we could appreciate the impressive power and excellent Hi-Matic eight-speed full automatic transmission, especially along the climbs up Mount Macedon later in the day.

DAWN OF A NEW DAILY The smallest of the Daily range starts with the 35S Van, with wheelbases from 3000 mm up to 4100 mm, cargo volumes from 7.3 m3 to 18 m3 and a GVM of 3000 kg providing a GCM of 7000 kg. This amount of choice enables selection of payloads from 1669 kg for the smallest spec, or 1378 kg if you go for the maximum volume.

Next in line comes the 50C Van, with wheelbase options from 3520 mm to 4100 mm and cargo volumes from 9 m3 to 19.6 m3. Here the GVM is 4495 kg with GCM of 7995 kg if you want to stick to a car licence category, but can be optioned to offer a GVM of 5200 kg with GCM of 8700 kg. This gives a payload range from 1804 kg up to an impressive 2792 kg depending on spec and options.

The largest of the Daily van range is the 70C. It comes with a common wheelbase of 4100 mm, but with various heights, enabling the buyer to achieve cargo volumes of 16, 18 or 19.6 m3. GVM is a whopping 7000 kg along with a GCM of 10,500 kg and a payload up to 4064 kg. This is where the largest engine option rated at 205 hp with 470 Nm of torque comes in very handy, especially for those longer trips outside the city.

If you are in the market for a cab/chassis, the range kicks off with the 50C in single-cab or dual-cab form, with wheelbase options running from 3000 mm and going to 4750 mm. GVMs start at 4495 kg for those that hold a car licence with available options up to 5200 kg if needed, providing a GCM of 7995 kg and 8700 kg respectively. This gives impressive payloads of 2239 kg up to 3181 kg depending on specs, options and obviously body fitment (with a maximum width of 2350 mm).

The larger of the cab/chassis range is the 70C with single or dual cabs. Wheelbase options start at 3450 mm and go to 4750 mm. The GVM is 6700 kg with the dual-cab or 7200 kg with the single-cab. This gives a GCM of 10,200 kg or 10,700 kg respectively, and payload ranges from 4100 kg up to 4838 kg. Again the maximum width allowed for a body is 2350 mm.

There’s even an all-terrain off-road version, and, if you are looking for a serious off-roader, then the Daily 4x4 is for you. Built on a truck-derived chassis, the Daily 4x4 comes with a single or dual-cab and offers a GVM of 4495 kg for those with a car licence, or a no cost option of raising the GVM to 5500 kg. This gives payloads of 2510 kg up to 2800 kg depending on specs, and comes with a braked trailer towing capacity of 3.5 t. When off-road the ability of the 4x4 Daily is clearly class leading and not just a gravel road or snow time performer.

Consequently, it is ideal for emergency services vehicles, mining, off-road support, or even serious motorhomes for those that get the call for beyond the bush and into the extremes to find secluded spots and solitude.

To appreciate the definition here of a serious off-roader, you need to run through the full spec sheet to appreciate that this Daily will go anywhere. It can scale inclines of 45 degrees with approach angles of 48 degrees and wade through water of 660 mm. It has a full-time 4x4 system with front, centre and rear differential locks along with a double low-range transfer case with 24 gears and a high tensile steel chassis with parabolic front and rear leaf spring suspension. If you get this Daily stuck, I don’t believe you can blame the vehicle when asking your mate for help with a tow.

Dependent on which new Daily catches your eye results in whether you get to choose between the current Euro 5 engine and the latest Euro 6 offering. The Euro 5, 2.3-litre engine has a turbocharger with wastegate and intercooler producing 126 hp (93 kW) from 3000-3600 rpm and torque of 320 Nm between 1800 and 2500 rpm.

The Euro 5, 3.0-litre offering is also turbocharged but uses a variable geometry system and intercooler to produce power of 170 hp (125 kW) at 2900-3500 rpm and torque of 430 Nm between 1500 and 2600 rpm.

Also available is a twin-turbo version of the 3.0-litre, which offers increased power of 205 hp (150 kW) at 3100-3500 rpm and torque output of 470 Nm at a low 1400-3000 rpm. This performed really well on the day and was very impressive when taking the 50C21 Cab Chassis up the steep inclines leading to Mount Macedon.

In the Daily 4x4 and 70C Van, you get the new Euro 6, 3.0-litre engine that requires AdBlue for the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, with an output of 180 hp and 430 Nm of torque. Although it was not possible on the day of our trials to get precise comparative fuel and AdBlue consumption data, if the move to Euro 6 gives similar fuel savings as is found in the truck market, then it should be a valuable option to consider when purchasing a new van or cab/chassis.

The auto now boasts a revised oil to air cooler and a new two-speed fan for even better performance in Australia’s hot conditions.

I’ve always been a big fan of the automated transmissions in all types of applications, and the torque converterequipped Hi-MATIC eight-speed could not be faulted. If you plan on putting different drivers in your new vehicles, then you would be wise to go for the auto to reduce the chance of driver abuse, but also give the driver one less thing to worry about whilst finding their way through city traffic by letting the computer concentrate on swapping the gear ratios.

In terms of fuel figures, our drive on the media programme was pretty hard on the engines, running fully loaded all day on some hilly country roads. With that in mind, the following figures are worst-case scenarios being: 35S17 Van – (9.3 l/100 km), 50C17 Van 12 m3 – (10.8 l/ 100 km), 50C17 Van 16 m3 – (12.4 l/100 km), 50C17 Cab Chassis auto – (12.1 l/100 km), 50C17 Cab Chassis manual – (12.0 l/100 km) and 50C21 Cab Chassis – (12.7 l/100 km).

The IVECO Daily comes with a long list of standard features in the new model line-up. In terms of safety, the range includes four SRS airbags, front and rear disc brakes with ABS and Electronic Stability Program, and IVECO ‘ESP 9’ safety package.

DAWN OF A NEW DAILY For comfort, the range includes a four-speaker audio system with FM/AM radio, CD/mp3 player with USB and AUX input. You also get Bluetooth connectivity with radio and phone controls on the steering wheel, which, most importantly, works perfectly, and was easy to connect with my iPhone, unlike some others on the market.

With the Business Premium pack added, you can then also opt for the Comfort pack, which adds a very comfortable suspended, fully adjustable and heated driver and passenger seat with armrests, which was impressive for a van and ideal for those long shifts behind the wheel. The Comfort pack also adds automatic climate control.

On top of the standard features, the Daily has three main option packs, with the first being called the Business Premium. This option is ideal for courier work and city pick-up/delivery applications as the pack adds reverse buzzer, fog lights and IVECONNECT multimedia system with GPS and rear reversing camera.

The Efficiency pack focuses on reducing the running costs of the vehicles. The Eco switch is an option with the manual transmission to reduce the torque of the engine when running empty, and so reducing fuel consumption.

With the 2.3-litre 35S model, the electronics bring you start/stop technology that automatically switches off the engine when the Daily comes to a stop. The pack also gives lane departure warning for added safety.

IVECO Australia's marketing manager, Darren Swenson, says the availability of the new option packs has two main benefits for perspective buyers.

“The new pack options allow buyers to more closely align their van or cab/chassis specifications with the application at hand and to enjoy the cost benefits of grouping several of these options together,” Mr. Swenson said.

“Also, some prospective buyers may prefer an entry-level package that, although is still well specified, doesn’t have features that they may not want or need – we can now better cater to these people and provide them Daily ownership at a lower price point,” added Darren.

Along with the packs, buyers also get a list of additional options, such as rear airbag suspension, alloy wheels, sliding doors on both sides and internal walk-through access, ideal for courier drivers so they don’t need to open their doors into traffic.

The new range is backed by a three-year/200,000 km standard warranty. There is also a range of extended warranties available at additional cost if you want peace of mind over the long term.

In terms of servicing, IVECO Daily boasts a 40,000 km or 12-month (whichever comes first) engine oil service interval.

You will also be covered by IVECO Assistance, a 24 /7 roadside assistance programme, while owners wanting the peace of mind of fixed service and maintenance costs can opt for an IVECO service agreement that is available with several levels of cover.

The IVECO Daily was an impressive van and light cab/ chassis when launched back in 2015, and the new upgrades have made it even more so. The engines and Hi-MATIC eight-speed transmission were great to drive and never felt like they were struggling, even in the serious terrain that we encountered on our run. The new styling, especially on the inside, gives the Daily a very modern look, although I wasn’t a fan of the strange smiley face grille.

As with a lot of the vehicle reviews we conduct, the final result of whether we would choose a particular brand over another comes down to an individual application. If you are looking for a small van for everyday use, the IVECO Daily is an impressive choice, but compared to its rivals you may be swayed by price, and, with the options we had on our vehicles, it is certainly not the cheapest on the market.

However, if you need a serious workhorse with the volume and weight capacity of a truck, but want to enjoy the drive standards to be closer to that of a car, then the IVECO Daily comes out the winner. Also, if you want a great cab/ chassis for your minibus or motorhome, along with style and comfort, the IVECO is an excellent choice here too.

Just WHAT does Mahindra offer the Australian ute buyer that makes it a unique prospect?

T

he Indian auto industry is one of the largest in the world, and yet for many Australians it remains largely an unknown quantity. In our domestic market we reach total sales of around 1.1 million vehicles per year. Compare this figure with the total annual production of commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles and two wheelers in India of 25.3 million, and you start to get some idea of the local economies of scale.

By 2020, India expects to be a world leader in the export of two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles, and that the current sales performance of electric vehicles at 22,000 units will rise to match the Government of India’s vision to see six million electric and hybrid vehicles in India by 2020.

European and US automakers have invested $17 billion (USD) since April 2000 and June 2017

Mahindra and Mahindra is the third largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in the Indian market, following the lead position of Maruti Suzuki and second place Hyundai Motors India. In fourth position is Honda Cars, ahead of TATA Motors, owners of Jaguar Land Rover, followed by TKM, Renault, Ford India, Nissan and Volkswagen.

That background brings us to the launch into Australia of the all-new “Tougher Next Generation Mahindra Pik-Up”, and we mention the background to the company simply to underline that, with the global growth prediction mentioned above, it is reasonable to expect that there’s a lot more to come in the near future.

Mahindra’s Next Generation Pik-Up, with its refreshed outer body styling, new six speed transmission, increased turbo diesel power, and more stylish new interior, sets the scene for the Indian manufacturer to expand into country Australia, using its agribusiness activity as a support for its growth as a vehicle supplier through a network of 40 dealerships.

The original Pik-Up was launched in Australia in 2007, and in that time it’s been a case of no news is probably good news as it has made its entrance without tales of woe of vehicle failure. Its basic design seems to have coped well with the tougher conditions of country Australia out of a total snapshot of combined global sales of the Pik-Up and Scorpio SUV that now exceeds 500,000 units.

Joydeep Moitra, head of international operations for Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, “We have been here in business for over a decade with a local Mahindra subsidiary and on-ground team to focus on needs and aspirations of the consumers and to build our offerings.

INDIAN ECONOMY “For the new Mahindra Pik-Up, a six-month test schedule was carried out in Australia and concluded in August 2017, clocking up over 80,000 local kilometres. This input has helped create a Mahindra Pik-Up perfect for local conditions.

This is a testimony of our commitment to developing products for the Australian market,” added Mr. Moitra.

The new Mahindra Pik-Up boasts significant enhancements in its drivetrain to 103 KW of power and 330 Nm torque, an all-new six-speed gearbox, totally new attractive interiors that will appeal to a much wider customer profile, and the inclusion of ISOFIX child restraints with top tether standard on all dual-cab models.

The upgrade includes a complete overhaul of the Mahindra Pik-Up’s aesthetics, with specific emphasis on the frontend styling. The vehicle comes in two specification levels: S6, which provides function and value; and the S10, which offers an SUV-like-specification yet remains within the identity of the Mahindra Pik-Up’s rugged and reliable focus.

Styling has certainly improved, with the square cut previous appearance now softened through changes to the front of the vehicle where the grille, headlights, bonnet and fog lamps have all undergone a substantial redesign.

The new grille design is smarter, utilising a glossy black finish with subtle chrome accents (S10 models), as well as a more prominent Mahindra badge, while the lower air intake has been reshaped to provide a stronger visual integration with the grille. Black mesh inserts are consistently applied to both the main grille and the lower air intake, creating a more consistent appearance.

The headlights on either side of the grille are also completely new, with a cleaner, more resolute appearance and a new curved LED daytime running light signature for the S10 Double Cab. Bolder fog lamps are mounted in restyled apertures that are linked to the lower edge of the headlights. The redesigned front-end styling is accompanied by static bending projection lamps.

The cabin of the Next Generation Pik-Up has undergone important upgrades as part of the model line-up. Perhaps the most obvious improvements are to the upholstery and the six-inch, full colour touchscreen display on the S10 Double Cab models located in the centre console.

The Mahindra Pik-Up’s cabin is also comprehensively equipped. As the flagship model of the range, the S10 Double Cab benefits from useful features such as remote central locking, cruise control, satellite navigation, reversing camera and a multifunction steering wheel.

Equipment upgrades now include auto wipers and intelligent headlamps, plus a fully automatic climate control system for the S10 variants.

Safety features like hill descent control, ESC, ABS, EBD, rollover mitigation, airbags, crash protection crumple zones and a collapsible steering column are standard across the range. Also new are head rests and three-point lap sash seat belts for all seats along with two ISOFIX anchors in the rear seat with three top tether points for all double-cab models.

The updated 2.2-litre four-cylinder mHawk turbodiesel engine with its variable geometry turbocharger now achieves a power output of 103 kW, with peak torque of 330 Nm rated from 1600 to 2800 rpm. Completing the drivetrain is a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels through a 4×4 transmission with low range. The entire range of the Next Generation Mahindra Pik-Up is fitted with an Eaton MLD (Mechanical Locking Differential) as standard.

Mahindra Automotive Australia has already released a range of aftermarket accessories for the Pik-Up range that includes a genuine towbar rated at 2500 kg, aluminium, galvanised and colour-coded steel trays, winch compatible steel bullbars, air intake snorkels, interior mats and canvas seat covers, and suspension upgrades with increased ground clearance.

At launch, there are four Pik-Up models available, starting with the single cab 4x4 S6 cab/chassis from $26,990 drive away, the dual-cab 4x4 S6 with factory well-sided tub from $29,990 drive away and the dual-cab S10 4Ă—4 with factory well-sided tub from $31,990 drive away. From early 2018, the single-cab Pik-Up will be available in 4x2 S6 cab/ chassis configuration from $21,990 drive away. The pricing includes a five-year/100,000 km limited warranty with fiveyear roadside assistance.

Delivery Magazine has yet to drive the New Generation version of the Pik-Up, but drive evaluations of the previous model confirmed that they were a no-frills, basic offroader that was capable of performing well in typical rural Australian conditions. Adding a more sophisticated series of upgrades and equipment can only enhance its appeal at a realistic pricing level.

Rather than retrace the exploits of its namesake through Asia over 24 years, Stuart Martin selected Adelaide for seven days as an alternative to evaluate the new Mercedes-Benz that bears the explorer’s name

T

here will be no gasps of surprise at the assertion detailing the desirability of the Mercedes-Benz Vito commercial van range. Carting crew, cargo or a combination of the two, the big Benz is a safe and versatile option, and the three-pointed star has added another string to its bow, sitting in price terms above the $58,100 Valente and below the luxurious V-Class, which starts from $74,990.

The introduction of the $69,990 Marco Polo camper model delivers a pop-top offering sleeping space for five, up to a point, but more on that later.

Getting the accommodation to the venue isn’t an overly laborious task – the monocoque-bodied Marco Polo weighs an extra 120 kg over its Valente cousin, tipping the scales at 2380 kg. Benz lists the gross vehicle mass at 3100 kg and the gross combination mass at 5600 kg, with 44

a braked towing capacity of 2500 kg, so you can pack a bit in.

Power and performance come in the form of the 2.1-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder producing 120 kW and 380 Nm, sending the drive via a standard seven-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. There are 4MATIC fourwheel-drive versions, and that could be worthwhile for Australia, but this is not a go-anywhere off-roader, more a careful climber in slippery circumstances.

This engine uses AdBlue within its emissions controls, although it’s 11.5-litre tank has shrunk from the 25 litres carried by other models due to the addition of the auxiliary heater.

The official fuel economy claim from the manufacturer is 6.3 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle, rising to 7.4 on the urban test and dropping to 5.7 on the extra-urban

cycle. After 532 km at a 21-km/h average the trip computer showed the Marco Polo had used 10.8 litres per 100 km from the 70-litre tank, giving a good indication of the value of low engine rpm at higher cruise speeds these days.

Service intervals are once a year – or every 25,000 km if you are covering serious territory on a regular basis, all backed by a three-year/200,000 km warranty. The driver gets paddle shifters and the ability to hold a gear, which is more useful on descent than anywhere else as the extra weight puts pressure on the brakes.

The addition of the pop-top roof is noticeable at first due to the increased lean that’s a little more noticeable in the corners, but, once acclimatised, it wasn’t a factor and the Marco Polo was able to hustle along at a reasonable rate.

A tight 11.8 m turning circle was useful in getting the 5x2 m van through tight spots on the school runs, and we

discovered other advantages such as the opportunity for quick changes of clothes for after-school activities, which have never been so easy.

The driver still has to put up with a foot-operated park brake and the gear selector on the steering column, but gets a leather covering for the reach and rake adjustable steering wheel, automatic headlights, an auto-dimming centre mirror, the very-welcome Crosswind Assist, heated and power-adjustable exterior mirrors (which offer a good rear view) and a trip computer with fuel and AdBlue use.

Standard fare also includes dual batteries, an auxiliary heater (effective but difficult to operate), stability and traction control, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, dual front, front-side and front curtain airbags, but no airbag action behind the B-pillar, yet it still gets the fivestar ANCAP rating.

DRIVEN The material for the walls is breathable and water-resistant, says Benz, but also lets plenty of light through, so an alarm clock is not something you’ll need. A ladder of some description is required to reduce clambering on seats and the centre table to gain access to the roof bed.

The aforementioned table sits low in its housing, with cupholders for the rear seat occupants to complement the drink holders near the rear of the doors. The table can be difficult to move along its floor track, but easily rises upward and folds out two tabletops. It’s not an expansive dining table but it delivers a decent space for a meal or as a workspace.

Manual air conditioning with rear vents is also standard, as is the four-speaker USB and Bluetooth-equipped (for phone and music link) four-speaker sound system, with satnav on the small screen, which is not yet touch controlled.

The test vehicle had a few options, with the chief attraction among the highlights for the driver being the Driving Assistance Package, which adds Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist and rain sensing function for the sum of $1345, while the LED intelligent headlight system adds $2545.

There are side doors on both sides that are poweroperated with child locks and buttons on the B-pillars as well as up front for an extra $2264, but there’s no moving windows within these doors.

The 18-inch alloy wheel option looks nice but has 45-profile tyres. It’s not uncommon for marketers to specify larger rims and low aspect ratio tyres, all in the name of good looks, but for those that prefer comfort it would be prudent for ride quality to stick with the standard 16s and 65-profile rubber to take the edge off what is an otherwisedecent ride.

The downstairs compartment is also optionally available with three rows of seats (another $1500), but the test vehicle had instead a rear folding cushioned platform that combines with the rear bench folded flat to deliver a bed long enough to accommodate my 191cm frame.

There’s room for three kids or two adults, and, while the cushioning of the optional leather trim ($1409) is too firm for some, it delivers a decent sleeping space.

The pop-top rises on its own by way of struts to offer a 200-kg rated comfortable double bed above the cabin, which can be tethered to the roof when not in use to improve cabin headroom.

LED reading lights (fed by a dual-battery system) are included for the upstairs residents, and there are zipsecured ventilation flaps on either side, as well as smaller vents nearer the roofline, but more of the former would be a good idea.

Rear passengers have acres of leg and headroom, with 12-volt outlets and rear vents but no moving windows (there are powered pop-out rear windows controlled by the driver), as well as curtains all-round for complete shade and privacy. The driver might prefer the curtains all remained stowed for the sake of vision, but the mirrors and blind-spot warning system will help.

The rear bench can “slide” fore and aft to increase cargo space and set-up for the bed fold, but it’s a two-adult job to shift the hefty bench and that’s before the storage drawers within it were loaded with anything weighty.

The two front bucket seats pivot to the rear, offering more seating options, but like the rear bench it’s a fiddly task to turn them. A combination of pivot and fore/aft slide controls into one lever would make the job less laborious.

Winding out the $682 side awning is a job made precarious by the close proximity of the winding handle to the flank of the vehicle and the chance of an awning leg falling if it’s not been properly stowed. Once the handle had been fixed, the awning wound out without concern, but pegs and tie-down ropes are needed if even moderate winds are forecast.

Anyone on the tall side of 180 cm will need to duck, but most won’t have an issue with the verandah.

Aftermarket crews are coming up with cooktops and sinks in rear drawers, as well as awnings and annexes for the tailgate. This all points to the Marco Polo being a good vehicle in its own right (for a couple, comfortably, and a few kids if necessary) as well as the foundation for moretailored efforts by owners.

TEAM BUILDING The emergence of the Volkswagen Truck & Bus division signals the intention of the group to consolidate its assets and make its move to rule the major league.

E

very successful company needs a strategy, and, when the person announcing the strategy is Andreas Renschler, it pays to listen carefully and take notes.

As the CEO and member of the board of management of Volkswagen AG, Mr. Renschler has the background of success achieved by previously running Daimler’s truck and bus division and steering that group to global domination.

Unfortunately for Mr. Renschler, the timing of his move in February 2015 from one German giant to another 48

was somewhat turbulent. While he was forming up the amalgamation of brands such as Scania, MAN, Volkswagen Caminhoes e Onibus (RIO), and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the global perception of the VW brand was shattered by the Dieselgate scandal.

Not only did the credibility of the car division brands plunge, the continual attack on their profitability by claims for compensation and retribution now totalling $30 billion (US), reduced the funding for the formation of the venture, delaying progress and destabilising the group before it had even begun.

TEAM BUILDING

Time certainly either heals wounds or creates memory loss, and for Volkswagen the cloud of poor publicity that encompassed the group has cleared to the point where global sales appear to be back on track, with the exception of the US and Korean markets.

Spare a thought for Oliver Schmidt, VW’s compliance liaison with American regulators, who pleaded guilty in August to one count of conspiracy to defraud the US and another of violating the Clean Air Act. Herr Schmidt has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined $400,000 (US).

Schmidt is the second employee sent to a US prison for participating in the cheating scheme. James Liang, a veteran VW engineer, was sentenced by a Detroit Court to 40 months in prison and fined $200,000 (US) in August.

Liang, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy last year, has been cooperating with prosecutors.

A former Audi AG manager, Giovanni Pamio, has also been charged by the US for his alleged role in helping Volkswagen cheat emissions standards.

FEATURE As reported in the Washington Post, Liang and Schmidt are among eight VW executives criminally charged for their alleged roles in the scheme. Attempts to extradite VW executives in higher positions from Germany to the US have been resisted so far, although an investigation is ongoing in Germany and against individuals in the US. In January 2017, a South Korean court sentenced a Volkswagen executive to 18 months in jail for allegedly fudging the type approval of Volkswagen vehicles, according to Reuters. South Korea’s environment ministry also filed a criminal suit against Johannes Thammer, CEO of Audi Volkswagen Korea.

According to The Korea Times, Mr. Thammer has refused to stand trial in Korea, and, having left Korea after the indictment, has stated he would not return to Korea from Germany. He has been indicted for VW importing 15 different models of 120,000 manipulated diesel cars to Korea between 2008 and 2015. In 2016 the Korean Government banned sales of Volkswagen vehicles and revoked certifications of 80 models, also imposing a fine of $16 million (US).

The latest development in the Dieselgate saga is the decision

by Volkswagen Group Canada and Audi Canada to further compensate Canadian motorists while continuing to snub Australians that have been affected by the same scandal.

In a proposed further settlement, Volkswagen Group Canada and Audi Canada have offered to pay more than CAD$290m to resolve class action claims on behalf of 20,000 affected 3.0-litre diesel Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche branded vehicles.

The compensation will include buybacks, repairs and restitution payments in addition to a CAD$2.9m fine to be paid to the regulator. This follows the earlier Canadian Court approved settlement in respect of 105,000 affected Canadian 2.0-litre diesel vehicles, whereby Volkswagen and Audi agreed to pay CAD$2.1 billion to motorists and a CAD$15m fine.

In announcing the settlement, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada, Daniel Weissland, is quoted in a media statement as saying: “This is an important milestone for making things right for all of our customers with affected diesel vehicles in Canada”.

Paradoxically, the German vehicle manufacturer’s parent company, VWAG, along with Volkswagen Group Australia – which is under the leadership of CEO Michael Bartsch (also formerly the CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada) – refuse to agree to any compensation deal for the equivalent 100,000 or so affected Australian 2.0-litre diesel vehicles, which contain the same emissions cheating software.

Jason Geisker, Class Action Principal at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, which is representing thousands of affected Australian Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda motorists in the Australian class action, said there is simply no credible excuse for Volkswagen to continue to refuse compensation for Australian motorists, particularly as VW profited from its decade-long deception.

“Promptly apologising and compensating Canadians and Americans whilst paying millions of dollars to defence lawyers here in Australia to defend exactly the same conduct is simply deplorable,” Mr. Geisker said.

“In its smokescreen attempts to justify shocking double standards, Volkswagen seeks to hide behind carefully worded and formulaic statements about differences in emissions standards around the world.

“But let’s clear the air – the deception of testing authorities and cheating on emissions tests was always prohibited – both in the US and elsewhere around the world including Canada and Australia.

"So until Volkswagen is prepared to admit and accept responsibility for its deceptive conduct and compensate affected motorists accordingly, it will continue to lack credibility and will further damage its already sullied reputation,” Mr. Geisker said.

“By joining forces and merging the competencies of our brands in these focus areas, we believe we can massively increase efficiency – not only for our customers, but also for the entire transportation system, society, and the environment,” said Mr. Renschler.

Undoubtedly, the truck and bus division is maintaining a high degree of separation from the car division, especially in light of the strategy announced by Mr. Renschler to become the Global Champion in terms of profitability, customer innovations, global presence and employee satisfaction.

“The data available as a result of connected vehicles will allow real-time capacity planning and seamless sales – bringing together supply and demand. This and other digital services will in the future raise capacity utilisation by up to 80 percent.

The VW Truck & Bus group is imposing, comprising a product range that includes light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses as well as digital services, with 77,000 employees, truck and bus sales that total 184,000 units, 25 vehicle/chassis production plants in 17 countries and 5 component plants in 4 countries. The revenue for 2016 was estimated at 21.3 billion Euros, producing an operating profit of 1.3 billion Euros. Market share equates to 30 percent in Western Europe, 37 percent in Brazil and 22 percent in Central and Eastern Europe.

“Along with this, we can improve road safety. Traffic accidents are still the cause of far too many deaths on European roads. Today, seven percent of all European road accidents involve trucks, and, sadly, seventeen percent of them are fatal.

As VW Truck and Bus brings the various divisions under one umbrella, the final conglomerate changes the way the individual groups have operated in the past.

The current interest by European and North American markets in automated trucks also comes into the VW Truck & Bus equation through the Rio Group, and the intent to bring together autonomy, connectivity and cleaner emissions.

“Advanced driver-assistance systems and the different levels of autonomous driving, from platooning up to fully self-driving vehicles on public roads, will significantly reduce the number of collisions, with accidents involving trucks estimated to go down from seven to two percent,” Mr. Renschler added.

One aspect of technology adoption that is very interesting is the connectivity of vehicles to exchange information.

As Mr. Renschler explained: “In our Group, every new truck sold in Europe is equipped with built-in digital solutions.

We have over 300,000 trucks on the roads that are fully connected and serving customers with higher efficiency and better performance every day, thanks to our digital services.

FEATURE and have it available at a dealership on the planned route of the vehicle, and having a maintenance team standing by as the vehicle arrives is impressive by anyone’s standards.

But telematics and connectivity can do much more.

With systems that monitor vehicle road speeds across a section of the country, it’s possible to re-route trucks to engage with a shorter journey time by circumventing areas showing a delay. Telematic communication of when vehicles are using their windscreen wipers indicates where weather patterns are impacting on traffic flows and visibility, providing advanced warning to connected vehicles to inform the driver.

For inner city operation, especially at night where noise levels are regulated, it’s anticipated that electric hybriddrive trucks will become a positive option in terms of operating cost by 2020-2025. Not so for long haul, where diesel and LPG dual-fuel systems may provide an option.

One outcome from the formation of VW Truck & Bus is the ability of the group to operate globally through the collective individual technical benefits of the individual brands.

“We believe that the vast majority of new trucks on the roads will be connected by 2020. For now, the focus of most of the industry’s connectivity applications is on compliance, such as driver log files and cost optimisation for single trucks.

“Today, Volkswagen Truck & Bus is already the market leader in Europe when it comes to connected trucks on the road. And we are ready to rock the industry with our common, open, and cloud-based platform, which is jointly developed by MAN, Scania, and RIO. Right now the ‘RIO platform’ is being tested intensively on 20 customers around selected European countries,” he added.

This level of connectivity within the European brands has also now been extended into North America through the strategic alliance partnership with Navistar, again made possible by the adoption of the RIO platform.

The first step will be the adoption of the in-cab connecting hardware device. This will serve as a major step towards creating a global connected platform – covering roughly 650,000 vehicles worldwide. That will make it the world’s largest global ecosystem for commercial vehicles once the migration is completed.

The advantages extend much further than being able to offer predictive maintenance programmes that can monitor engine functionality from any distance. The ability to identify faults, recognise a solution, order a component 52

In the light commercial market the Group has a joint model-sharing programme that can offer the MAN TGE and Volkswagen Crafter replacement globally. Current plans are to launch the new Crafter, which is built at a new VW/MAN factory in Poznan, Poland, into the Australian market in late April. A date has not yet been announced for the introduction to Australia of the MAN TGE.

TEAM BUILDING

Features include App-Connect, Driver Fatigue Detection and Post Collision Braking, as well as Park Assist and side protection in a range that spans 59 different configurations with choices of wheelbase, roof heights, door placements and GVM upgrades across the van and cab/chassis offerings.

Engine choice will be confined to turbocharged and intercooled diesels, but, for the first time, the Crafter will offer an automatic eight-speed automatic transmission with torque converter, steering clear of the DSG dualclutch AMT popular in the car division products.

Moving down to Transporter-sized LCVs brings us to the I.D. Buzz Cargo, an electrified version that shares many of its design features with the iconic VW Transporter (Bulli) while offering a range of 200 km.

One thing is certain, VW Truck & Bus division intends to grow its various brands covering the light, medium and heavy commercial sector in Europe, North America and the Asia Pacific basin. It’s definitely a work in progress situation currently, but, over time, it could significantly impact on the current status quo.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be optional, and driveline configurations will span front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, dependent on model selection.

VW has already commenced field-testing of an e-Crafter version. With a 100 kW electric motor, the e-Crafter can accept 80 percent of a recharge within 45 minutes, weighs in at 2500 kg, has a payload of 1.75 tonnes and offers a range of 160 km.

MAN and VW previously collaborated on a medium-duty truck, and that option has now resurfaced in the form of the VW e-Delivery truck range. With its lithium-ion battery, this 4x2 urban distribution truck of 9-11 tonnes GVM can travel up to 200 km with a 4.5-6.7 tonnes payload. It’s the first 100 percent electric truck developed in Brazil, and it offers three-stage regenerative braking, startability up to 25 percent and gradeability up to 30 percent.

David Meredith climbs aboard the new generation of Hyundai’s light truck

M

y first encounter with the Hyundai truck range was a few Brisbane Truck Shows ago, when the previous model was trying to make its mark. It didn’t help that it’s styling was archaic, tinged with cheap, and mingled with just plain awful.

Whatever the technical credentials of the truck may have been, the mournful look of the cab and grille invoked depression, perhaps indicating that the owner or user clearly couldn’t afford a decent truck.

Fast forward to late 2016, and I was persuaded to attend the Australian release of the latest version of Hyundai’s light truck range in Western Sydney.

Strangely, Hyundai chose to appoint a privately-owned national distributor, Hyundai Commercial Vehicles Australia, rather than doing the job itself. Maybe its earlier experience played a part here.

The company is wholly owned by the Peninsular Motor Group, headed up by Sydney based and highly accomplished auto retailer, Dilip Kumar.

At the time, Mr. Kumar said his new venture had appointed 21 dealers from Brisbane to Adelaide, with an additional nine – including a WA venue – in process.

With Truck Centre WA now appointed the WA dealer for the new brand, I made sure I lined up one of the first trucks to arrive in the state for a decent drive.

Firstly, it must be said that with this latest version of the “Mighty,” as it is called, there isn’t the slightest trace of the previous assault on the visual senses. This truck looks clean, sharp, modern, and competitive with the best of Japan’s entrenched market dominators.

A low sill line and a deep windscreen enhance the grille, which is now functional and attractive. This version won’t have you squirming with distaste if you see it in the rearview mirror.

The Mighty range was previewed in three weight ranges – 4.5, 6.5 and 7.5-tonne – each in a range of wheelbases.

But, at the moment, the only models available are the 4.5-tonne versions, all with ready-to-go bodies suited for the most frequent applications. More on those later.

All the trucks are powered by Hyundai’s 3.9-litre fourcylinder Euro V diesel with 103 kW and 393 Nm of torque.

At present, it’s tied to a five-speed, dual-mode manual gearbox, but that may be a ratio down on the ideal for the mix of suburban stop/start and freeway cruising that most light trucks have to handle.

A six-speed box will be standard on the 7.5-tonne unit when it arrives.

Hyundai has tipped a truckload of safety and driver aid electronics and mechanicals into this new package. Vehicle Dynamic Control keeps its electronic eye on the state of play at any given time or circumstance. Four-wheel discs are standard across the range, and hill-start assist is also in every truck.

HY AND MIGHTY Every model has an active steering wheel incorporating the most frequently used controls, and the infotainment system includes the connectivity today’s drivers demand.

For the owner/operator, who depends on a range of devices to stay in touch with base and customers while on the road, there’s a 12-volt and a 24-volt outlet, plus two USBs to keep essential devices powered up.

All trucks have a 24-volt system and feature power windows, an essential tilt and telescopic steering column and cruise control. The headlights aren’t LEDs yet but have a dusk-sensing feature as standard.

Of course the trucks are pitted against well-entrenched models from Fuso, Hino and undisputed market leader, Isuzu, and face many years of ownership and reliability history for most fleets.

Nonetheless, I felt the trucks deserve a close look for lightduty users, particularly with the factory body packages and pricing.

The Hyundai chassis design is common across the range, with the differences only being in wheelbases. A cab/ chassis is available for those who want to fit a local tray, but the product from Korea looks pretty hard to beat, particularly as it carries the same three-year warranty as the truck itself.

Additionally, most remedial work required on the bodies, including the freezer unit, can be done at the local dealer’s workshop.

I drove the tipper truck on a run heading east up the Greenmount hill, loaded to capacity with some water tanks.

Hyundai’s own 3.9-litre Euro V turbo diesel develops 140 hp and 392 Nm of torque, with maximum torque coming in at around 1400 rpm. The five-speed all-synchro gearbox is also Hyundai’s unit.

At this stage there is no auto available in the range, a point that means the significant rental market will be a hard sell.

Additionally, although the manual gearbox delivers a set of ideal ratios up to third, there’s a huge and breathless gap to fourth.

On the steepest part of the hill, we were holding up pocket road trains and being passed by B-doubles as the truck was stretched in third but couldn’t maintain a higher speed in fourth.

Hyundai has fallen into the same trap as its competition showed with their early versions – importing the truck with an Asian-spec gearbox. The ratios are fine for predominantly suburban twists and turns and speeds up to 50 km/h, with fourth and fifth ready for the rare times the truck will hit a freeway. Not so here. The local application and terrain really requires a six-speed unit with even spread in the mid-range. Add a plant trailer and the point would be made even clearer.

DRIVEN That aside, the engine pulls strongly and smoothly, and there is very little road noise in the cab. Wind noise is there, but not really much different to the Isuzu.

I suspect Hyundai has learned from its successful entry into the van market, the iLoad, that a driver-focused cab is always appreciated by drivers and owners alike. The Mighty has a fully featured active steering wheel, with almost all operational controls available at the fingertips.

The dashboard and instrument array is clear, concise, and easy to reach. Ratios aside, the gearlever is perfectly placed for frequent stop-start deliveries. The competition makes a big point about 90-degree door openings, and the Hyundai is behind the eight-ball there.

Assuming a positive view of the truck’s reliability, perhaps the most compelling argument for Hyundai is the pricing structure. All versions have list prices that are effectively drive away.

In WA, the paradox is the bigger stamp duty and registration fees for sub-4.5-tonne trucks versus heavier units. You can save over $2100 by ordering the truck for a truck licence instead of squeezing the GVM below the car-licence threshold with a down-rated compliance plate.

As Truck Centre’s Hyundai Truck manager, Grant Renell, pointed out, “If you spend a few bob getting your truck licence, you’ll pay less for your new truck”.

Drop-deck trailers can substantially improve turnaround times for delivery and pick-up of plant and equipment.

ome 26 years ago, George Fendyk and business partner Fabian Burder combined forces to establish Burder, in Wangaratta, Victoria.

Burder was originally set up as a manufacturer of front-end loaders to suit a wide variety of agricultural tractors. The Burder designs subsequently quietly revolutionised Australian-built tractor implements due to their unique features and benefits, which included selflevelling loader frames.

Starting from humble beginnings of just five staff members, Burder now employs 60 personnel, with full-time staff manufacturing not just front-end loaders, but various other implements and attachments such as forklifts.

It’s been some years now since Fabian Burder left the company, but, in 2005, George’s son Adam joined the business in a full-time capacity as general group manager overseeing all aspects of the running of the family-owned business. George is still involved full time in the business, and has taken a key role in research and development. In particular, George’s interest has been in another arm of the company called Titan Custom Trailers, building a variety of unique solutions directly for the transport sector.

Titan’s revolutionary drop-deck trailer is certainly a new concept to the market. In a world of increasing Work Health and Safety requirements, and even stricter compliance measures, any design that can increase safety for company employees is going to be of great benefit to all concerned.

TITAN TRAILERS An area that’s always been a point of concern is the loading and unloading of plant and equipment off machinery trailers (floats). This concern is due to a variety reasons, including the potential for back injury caused by lifting heavy ramps and the risk of falling from heights that can occur while climbing onto the deck of the trailer to chain the equipment to the deck. Furthermore, there’s a significant risk of a machine falling off the ramps while being driven up onto the deck, due to the angle of the ramps plus the potential for ramps to collapse, when not of sufficient strength to carry the weight of the equipment driven onto the trailer.

To combat all of the above challenges, George’s new Titan drop-deck trailer solves all these problems, making the loading and unloading of plant and equipment both safer and easier. Power for the trailer comes from an electro/hydraulic system, via a 12 V battery that is trickle charged via the standard seven-pin trailer plug when being towed. Using the drop-deck trailer is very simple, through the operator switching on the batterypowered electric motor and using a remote control with a simple up and down toggle switch for the raise and lower function.

The operation of the trailer is extremely simple. Apart from two safety shut-off valves on the hydraulic lines running to the main lift rams, there are no other pins to pull or locks to remove in order to either raise or lower the trailer. Once lowered, the trailer deck is flat on the ground, which means that equipment can be driven straight on without the need for ramps. For example, a local council could use this trailer to shift ride-on lawn movers from site to site, and once they reach the new site, the operator simply lowers the trailer (as described above) and then once tiedown chains/ropes are removed, the operator can simply back the mower off the trailer, as simple as that, and all risk of falling off the ramps, ramps breaking, or the operator injuring himself/herself climbing off the load deck are removed.

In current guise, the deck can lift up to 3500 kg, which would be suitable for a variety of equipment not limited to rideon lawn movers, small tractors, bobcats, or company excavators. In a recent order for a local council, Titan has manufactured the trailers in galvanized steel to prevent corrosion and has also installed large lockable lockers at the front of the trailer so that the user can securely store tools, jerry cans of fuel and other accessories such as a chainsaw safely and securely to avoid the risk of theft.

FEATURE The Titan drop trailer uses fully independent suspension on all four axles, and, as such, this allows the deck of the trailer to be lowered down between the four wheels. The centre axle, where the deck platform pivots off, will sit directly on the ground. When fully raised, the trailer still has an impressive 300 mm of ground clearance allowing it to traverse off the bitumen and into golf courses and building sites, all likely places for the trailer to spend its life.

Braking is done electrically back to the towing vehicle through the seven-pin electrical plug, and also includes a breakaway system in the unlikely event the trailers connection via the 50 mm ball coupling becomes dislodged. Operators can either leave the trailer connected to the towing vehicle when lowering the trailer, or they can disconnect the trailer from the towing vehicle allowing for a fully-flat bed in order to load the equipment.

Another unique innovation Delivery was privy to was George’s new single-axle fixed dolly he has installed underneath a conventional threeaxle side-loader trailer. Those operators in the business of container distribution will know all too well the problems of overloading when carrying a 40’ container fully loaded on a side-loader trailer. Even with mass management, allowing a gross combination weight of up to 46 tonnes, overloading can still be an issue. To help solve this dilemma, George has fitted a single-axle dolly under the front of a conventional tri-axle side-loader.

Whilst some trailer manufactures have gone down the path of quad-axle trailers with steerable rear axle, George’s conventional tri-axle trailer with a dolly fitted has several key advantages.

George explained that quad-axle semitrailers can potentially cause increased damage to the roads due to higher weights being carried over a small area, and they are also more difficult to tow due to increased cut in, particularly relevant around suburban streets of Australia’s capital cities.

Furthermore, higher tyre wear can be expected due to the increase tyre scrubbing effect of a four-axle group configuration. With the dolly setup George has built, all of the above problems are solved, and to overcome a common criticism of trailers with dolly’s – increased difficulty in reversing – George has fitted a dolly lock, so that the trailer can be reversed easily as would be the case with a conventional semitrailer.

George and Adam Fendyk’s business of Burder and Titan are testimony to Australian innovation, design and manufacturing. Whilst we have lost our Australian-made car industry, it’s reassuring to see local businesses still innovating and producing high quality products here in Australian and employing Australian men and women.

Sure as eggs are eggs and Kentucky is the home of Bourbon, RAM Trucks, Chevrolet Silverados, GMC Sierra Denalis and Ford F-Series in all their glory have been overlooked by their originating manufacturers in terms of exports in any configuration other than left-hand-drive.

Designed in California by Randy Rodriguez (now you have no doubts of the American involvement), it was engineered in Michigan, tested in Arizona and is assembled in Mississippi. Randy actually designed the exterior, while teammate Diane Allen looked after the interior, with Fred Diaz providing assistance as executive consultant along the way.

Australia has a love affair with utes, but it’s no less than the love affair Americans have for their pickup trucks, the only difference being that the purchase price in one of the fifty states, five territories and one district that comprise the United States of America is way below what we pay here for something that’s considerably smaller and with a much more restricted specification.

Launched at the North American International Motor Show in 2015, it’s powered by a V8 turbocharged Cummins diesel of 5.0 litres (310 hp/230 kW with 752 Nm of torque) and it drives through a six-speed automatic transmission controlled by a column shift.

microns. And before the uninformed brand these vehicles as gas guzzling polluters, these technologies work together to refine an emissions system that results in near zero oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).

The result is a frugal fuel user that kicks down with good levels of acceleration when required, but it’s greatest appeal lies in how quiet the engine is under normal operating conditions.

Calling a Titan a full-sized pickup in the US means that, for the Australian market, it’s bigger than anything built for our market in Thailand, Spain or Japan by the Japanese manufacturers, but it’s smaller than the F250, RAM 2500 and Chevy.

The Cummins two-stage M2 turbocharger is configured to work well at both low and high engine speeds. High injection pressures from the Bosch common-rail system with Piezo injectors is amplified by an integrated electronic control system to provide the best performance with a clean exhaust emissions set-up that uses cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and Cummins emissions solutions aftertreatment (AdBlue) with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Together with two-stage fuel filtration, the final system that’s based on the stringent US emissions legislation traps greater than 99 percent of all particles as small as four

Recently there have been suggestions by senior management at Nissan that a right-hand-drive factory option is under discussion for the future. But for those that want a Titan in their driveway right now, there is a solution in the form of Australian supplier Performax International of North Lakes, near Brisbane.

FEATURE Available in the Australian market to provide a mid-sized vehicle that’s between a standard Japanese dimension and the sometimes too large US alternatives, the Nissan Titan comes with front and rear ventilated disc brakes, ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake force distribution), and BA (Brake Assist). Add to these features the vehicle dynamic control (VDC) with traction control (TC), plus the active brake limited slip differential (ABLS).

Tyre pressure monitoring is also a very valuable addition as it enables you to keep tabs on how the P275/70R18 rubber is performing on each corner.

The front end is an independent, double-wishbone set-up while the rear runs with a solid DANA axle on multi-leaf semi-elliptical springs, using Bilstein dampers.

The standard spec of the Titan makes the best of the current Australian/Japanese/European alternatives look like a poverty pack special edition. The cabin is huge by comparison, and with fold-up rear seating and a fold-down flat floor system the interior is much more versatile for load carrying.

Up front, the driver and passenger seats are also huge, power adjusted, comfortable and leather trimmed, featuring heating panels and cooling fans.

Only currently available in Australia as a crew-cab with full all-wheel-drive layout, the chassis and driveline are protected by a transfer case and lower radiator skid plates.

A large screen rear-vision camera supplements bumper mounted proximity alerts, and when reversing onto a tow ball connection or 5th wheeler the proximity vision on the large screen of the hitch location is also transmitted to the driver to simplify coupling. Towing limit for a braked trailer is 4259 kg, but remember that when heading above 3500 kg the tow ball and assembly needs to be rated for 4500 kg with a 70 mm ball and not the 50 mm ball of a 3500 kg rated tow package.

When driving the Titan the driver and passengers literally do have to step up to the mark when entering and leaving the cab, as it is higher than expected. It also takes longer to turn around than the average sedan at around a 13 m turning circle.

Where vehicles like the Titan and all the other larger US alternatives make a name for themselves is the way they eat up the kilometres when out on the highway. With almost double the torque of a typical Aussie-style ute, and with a six-speed automatic transmission, the highway cruising ability is effortless, even when towing a large caravan or boat. Delivery Magazine predicts that the next five years will see a considerable increase in the number of right-handdrive American-designed utes coming on to our market and giving the existing Aussie alternatives a tough battle for customers looking for a high-specification model with the power to do the job and tow the weight. These big Americans are easy to drive, ride well for their size and quickly grow on you by way of appeal.

Expect to see pricing around the $125,000-$135,000 sector for large utes competing in this area. At that level, if the ability of the vehicle is more important than the final price tag, you should end up a very happy camper. Don’t, however, fall into the trap that this is a go-anywhere, off-roader. All-wheel-drive at this level, except for those that then go highly modified, means coping with snow, ice, sand and dirt roads. It is not an adventure buggy for climbing mountains and crawling through creek beds.

THE RAM REPORT

F

inding the right tools for a towing job is a complex task now; with so many vehicles laying claim to a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.

Some are optimistic, many can do the job but you know the vehicle is at its limit – then there are those machines, which are purpose-built for the job and feel it.

Affectionately known as ‘Rambo,’ the RAM 2500 Laramie under long-term evaluation by sister publications PowerTorque and Delivery is one of those machines. As it squats with menace in the Brisbane airport carpark, just squeezing in beneath the roof, you know it’s itching to put something on the tow bar. Not today, but soon its wish will be granted.

Adorned with a “Tuff” bullbar and sidesteps, it looks ready for cattle mustering north of Wilcannia – we’re not planning on testing it, but you never know, particularly with the road ahead.

The immediate journey has Adelaide as the first destination, just over 2000 km and two border crossings away from Brisbane’s domestic terminal, allowing the behemoth to canter along at a restful rate on the tachometer not that far above idle.

The big Cummins diesel, an overhead valve in-line castiron six-cylinder unit, produces 276 kW and 1084 Nm of torque in a smooth even manner, passing on little of its efforts to the cabin in terms of vibration or noise.

The tight squeeze out of the carpark continues through the roadwork-riddled Brisbane streets – if it had lane departure warning it might well be going off on both sides at once, such is the girth of this beast.

The high seating position allows a view over the top of even ‘large’ SUVs, and lane choices are made to easily avoid snarls. The big mirrors have a programmable downwards tilt when reversing but blind spots need to be well monitored for ‘shopping trolleys’ and family sedans.

Not that many get in your way, although more than a couple times Neanderthal drivers felt the need to ‘teach the big boy a lesson’ – perhaps an automotive version of the tall poppy syndrome – and make life difficult in traffic, but there’s no accounting for idiocy.

Regardless, the gentle giant lopes easily through the traffic on a whiff of throttle, slipping through the relaxed-pace sixspeed auto smoothly.

The column shifter hasn’t made the journey to the lefthand-side of the steering column during the otherwisecomprehensive RHD re-engineering program, but it’s not that difficult a set-up into which the driver can adjust.

The foot operated park-brake next to the right foot also takes some familiarity, but it feels solid (more than others of its ilk) and only the popping of the cable off the back of the plastic lever panel caused any grief, something for the technicians to reattach at its next service.

The satnav eventually got the big red RAM out of the Brisbane metropolitan area – although it and Google Maps on the iPhone disagreed on the quickest route – and the fuel use that was in the high teens per 100 km fell closer to single digits as the road opened up and highway speeds were a regular fixture.

At 100-110 km/h it is ticking over at the bottom of the boost range, around 1500 rpm, with gear-changes only elicited for the steeper hills or quicker overtaking manoeuvres.

Aside from those tasks the engine is quiet and distant from the cabin, the big six-cylinder not making much noise as it effortlessly swallowed distance. Rougher sections of country B-roads made snoozing co-drivers groan as the over-zealous springs and lazy dampers took the edge off an otherwise-comfortable cruising experience – smooth bitumen sections were a bonus for the weary in the lefthand seat.

Mind you, the climate control still sees that side as the commander-in-chief when it comes to the climate control – hit the SYNC button on the touchscreen to align the two selected temperatures and it’s the passenger’s selection that wins. Some – including the Speaker of The House here – would say that’s the rightful balance of power.

The Alpine sound system controlled from the same touchscreen is a little leisurely in its discussions with the iPhone’s music function, but once on speaking terms it fills the spacious cabin with plentiful noise and nice bass.

The large seats cosset occupants and offer some lateral support, although cornering in its current chassis guise is not going to set records for lateral Gs – that said, the Nexen tyres performed better than expected.

Low levels of wind or engine noise made for pleasant highway cruising, and once on the single-lane country roads of outback Queensland (then NSW, Victoria and SA), Rambo’s indifference to oncoming B-doubles and their turbulent wake of air was also a pleasant surprise.

With cruise control deployed – it has a nice natural gait at an expensive and demeritorious cruising speed if left to drift on the driver’s right foot – the fuel use average settled in between 10 and 11 litres per 100 km, and it ended our 2091 km Brisbane-Adelaide jaunt on 13 litres per 100 km.

Suburban road use in the home of the Crows had fuel use climbing into the mid-teens, some of which was the result of rapid departures from traffic lights to amuse those within and confound other traffic, but heavier work to come also saw the thirst increase, but not by as much as expected.

Rambo has since shouldered the load of a Titan threehorse angle-load horse float – well over a tonne before any horseflesh gets on board – and it pulls the weight without concern, although the fuel use has crept back above the mid-teens as a result.

The tow ball is a little high for our low-slung US-built horse float, but the integrated trailer brakes speak proficiently to the float’s system and only locked the float’s front axle up when unladen again – remedied by a quick tap of the adjustment button that’s mounted with the electric brake controller as part of the dashboard instrumentation.

It’s easy enough to get the brakes balanced for the load on board when lanky and long-armed, but the stretch across to the left-hand-side of the transmission tunnel is not easily achieved for shorter folk – much of the switchgear has made the move across to the driver’s side, but perhaps the brake controller should have been a higher priority.

The centre display’s trailer information screen is also handy, showing the results of efforts with the brake controller.

Switching on the exhaust brakes and the “tow/haul” mode is easy and worthwhile, taking the pressure off the big ute’s all-round disc brakes, with the six-speed auto transmission’s extra enthusiasm for a down-change resulting in easy descents when laden.

Ascents are just as relaxed – the considerable urge from the 276 kW/1084 Nm Cummins diesel straight-six makes the “slow-vehicle bays” on country roads merely an extra part of the scenery.

Vision from the standard mirrors down the flanks of the horse float makes reversing an easy task, but lining up the tow-ball with the trailer when the camera is slightly offset takes some familiarity – some more clarity from the cameras (there’s also one to monitor the load in the tray) would make that a little easier.

So far, the RAM has proven a great tow tug and easier than expected around town – just don’t take it to a shopping centre pre-Christmas – and we’ll keep it working at hauling horses and detail its efforts.
