Welcome to Delivery Magazine and the opportunity to look into a crystal ball at the changes the light commercial vehicle industry will undoubtedly face in the years ahead.

The recent IAA Show in Hanover proved its importance to the industry by showcasing where designers and engineers are taking their products for the future, with a focus on how electricity and alternative fuels are going to play an increasing role in all forms of transport. The shift to alternative fuel sources covers LNG, CNG, bio-diesel, ethanol and even hydrogen, plus complete plug-in electric vehicles. The introduction of vehicles using these alternatives to the common fossil fuels will decrease exhaust emissions, lower pollution levels in cities, decrease health costs, and slow the progression of climate change. This scenario is not a wild projection. European cities are currently contemplating restricting non-Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles −cars as well as vans and trucks − from entering their city centres. Access charges to operate in some city centres are already being applied to delivery vehicles and commuters because of the need to react to the issues of global warming. City deliveries in Europe are now being scheduled to take place during the night, when traffic volumes are reduced. The proviso here is for noise reduction to run concurrently with a potential for zero emissions, two objectives that electric vehicles have the capability to achieve. It’s here that urban delivery fleets will face major technology changes. When it comes to electric vehicles, we have to look much further ahead than just considering hybrid vans and trucks, and battery power. The next generation of light commercials may well run on battery systems that recharge without physical connections, by parking over a pad in the parking lot. The relevance of autonomous vans or utes operating on Australian roads is a different issue completely, despite the current publicity and vast sums of development funding currently being applied by vehicle manufacturers to remove the driver from the vehicle. Although feasible, attempting to apply this technology to an urban vehicle operation with complete safety and security is a totally different scenario. In this issue we review the return of SsangYong to the Australian market with a brand new Musso that is well placed to create a stir in the ute segment. We compare a duet of Nissan Navaras and a duo of Mazda BT-50s, score the first drive of Mercedes-Benz’s new V6 X-Class ute

and Sprinter van, plus we look at the new options for small refrigerated delivery vans from Thermo King. Add in a drive of the latest Fuso Canter range and a weekend jaunt in the Blue Mountains with the I-Venture club run by Isuzu Ute, and there’s plenty to catch up on. The vehicles we choose have a direct bearing on the safety of those that drive them or are carried as passengers. As a guide to safety, Australian buyers have the benefit of ANCAP safety ratings. It’s important that the purchase process takes note that these are not simply a number of stars that are attached to a vehicle for the benefit of the marketing team. The ANCAP team recently clearly laid out the benefits of modern technology and improved safety by comparing two passenger cars of different ages in daily use. One lacked safety features such as anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control (ABS and ESC) systems and SRS airbags, and the vehicle structure left a lot to be desired in terms of protecting the occupants in the event of an accident. The other vehicle, although not brand new, benefitted from dual front airbags, side chest-protecting and side headprotecting airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, seat belt pretensioners, ABS and ESC. The vehicle design was also far superior and purposely designed to protect occupants in a crash situation. The prognosis of both vehicles involved in a similar motor vehicle accident was that the driver of the newer vehicle would walk away, while the driver of the older vehicle would not survive. The rate of fatalities for older vehicles is four times higher than for newer designs. Out of 254 vehicles that have completed ANCAP testing, only 10 vans and 21 utes have been tested. Of these, only 11 utes and two vans scored a full five-star rating. As a fleet manager or owner of a company that uses LCVs, can you confidently support the concept of placing your staff in vehicles that do not reach the top level of safety? If their lives can better protected, will you play your part? Shouldn’t you, as an operator or driver, demand their fitment? As always, stay safe and enjoy the drive. Kind regards,

MUSSO MAGIC The return of SsangYong brings a capable and well-equipped ute to Australia – words by Chris Mullett.

I

t’s easy to become a bit complacent when evaluating the current range of utes on the Australian market, because in many cases there is not much to commend one brand over another. Most technologies available in the various products are a decade old and in the majority of cases, we are still awaiting the introduction of rear disc brakes − something that would be totally unacceptable in a modern passenger car. South Korean manufacturers such as Kia and Hyundai are these days acknowledged as innovators. Evolving product ranges incorporate new technologies with outstanding design, often outdoing the old European styling houses in the process. They also were amongst the first to introduce the seven-year warranty and SsangYong brings the same level of support to the Australian buyer, together with seven years’ unlimited distance provisions plus matching roadside assistance - something that is far from universal across the board, even today. The oldest South Korean automaker, with over 60 years history, is actually SsangYong. The brand has had a couple of goes at bringing its products to Australia and for those that like statistics, there are apparently still 18,000 SsangYong models travelling our road network. While establishing the brand as reliable and value for money, the manufacturer relied on importation handled by independent distributors, suffering the consequences of a retail process that lacked direction and a strong commitment. Recognising that Australia is one of the leading global markets for utes, SsangYong Motor Company has now established its own factory-backed retail distribution operation Down Under. Undoubtedly influenced by the success of Isuzu UTE Australia, the Korean company intends not only to match the rapid acceptance of Isuzu Ute, but to take its brand further thanks to a larger overall product range that includes three SUVs. 8

The Musso nameplate is retained for the ute from the previous model range but this latest version is totally new, with a specification that far exceeds the majority of its direct competitors. With around 32 dealers initially signed up, managing director Tim Smith is keen to increase retail outlets to the 40 mark by early 2019, and then continue to build the network from the ground up. Delivery is of the opinion that with the appeal of Musso, plus the added product range of the Rexton, Tivoli and Tivoli XLV, dealers looking for additional profitability will soon be

knocking on SsangYong’s door, probably adding to traditional dealer forecourts that once only sold Ford or Holden. Before delving into specifics about the size of the engine and the features of the three different versions of the Musso, we’ll first tackle driveability, ride comfort and family appeal. The interior of the crew cab ute gives the impression of increased space when compared to Ford Ranger and Holden Colorado, and the ride comfort is much improved over either. There’s plenty of leg, hip, shoulder and headroom in both the front and rear seats, with a centre fold-down armrest on the rear and centre console in the front.

The electric power steering is precise and well weighted, with the top-of-the-line version being speed sensitive. When driven without a load in the tray, it neither wallows through corners, nor thumps over bumps, and provides an impressive level of ride comfort. Despite having a live rear axle, the rear suspension runs with coil springs, providing a supple but well-controlled ride quality. At the time of evaluation it was not possible to experience the ride and handling when laden. The 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine is SsangYong’s own design, and conforms to Euro 6 exhaust emissions without the need for AdBlue, making it one of the DELIVERY ISSUE 82

most emission-friendly vehicles on sale in our market. The engine and driveline, and much of the vehicle’s mechanical specification, matches that of the Rexton SUV, removing some of the concern over the supply of genuine parts by having a high degree of commonality. Service intervals are 12 months/20,000 km, with fixed price costings. Peak power of 133 kW is produced at 4000 rpm, while 400 Nm of torque arrives from 1400 rpm out to 2,800 rpm, matched to a six-speed manual or six-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The driveline is completed by a Borg Warner selectable all-wheel-drive system featuring 2WD and 4WD low and high ratios, complete with hill descent control and hill start assist. Although the capacity of the engine might seem small on paper, the engine management programming and wellmatched ratios of the transmission make for a smooth and impressive level of performance. It’s easily up to everyday

driving, while at the same time being very quiet. Wind noise is also low, making it one of the quietest of the dual cab set. SsangYong is owned by the Indian giant conglomerate Mahindra, which also owns Italian styling house Pininfarina. This might explain why the Musso looks better than most, while managing to convey a brand feel that’s more European than Asian. Safety standards for light commercial vehicles have lagged a bit behind passenger cars, but the new SsangYong Musso is equipped with excellent levels of safety featuring six airbags on all models, with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and forward collision warning (FCW) for 2019 models. The high-strength steel construction of its Quad-frame is claimed by the manufacturer to make the Musso stiffer overall than its competitors, achieved by using 1.5 GPagrade ultra-strength steel.



FEATURE This not only gives greatly improved body strength but also reduces weight. Also important for those watching safety levels are the inclusion of impact-absorbing elements in the steering wheel and steering column to minimise injuries from a frontal collision, while the structure and materials employed in the frontal area of the body are designed to improve pedestrian safety. In addition to standard AEB and FCW for every model in the SsangYong range for 2019, the ELX model adds Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The top-of-the-line Ultimate comes with a 360°view camera monitoring system for enhanced safety, enabling the driver and passengers to view the total area surrounding the vehicle, a huge upgrade from a standard reversing camera. Rather than offering an inbuilt satnav programme, the infotainment unit includes AM/FM radio with Bluetooth connectivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supplied on the higher-specification ELX and Ultimate models, together with an eight-inch screen and a reversing camera. Other standard features include an adjustable tiltand-telescopic steering wheel, electric windows, cruise control, central locking, airconditioning with fine dust filters, a 12V/120W power outlet, and tie-down anchorage points in the fully lined cargo area (1300 x 1570 x 570mm). The maximum towing capacity is 3500 kg, which equals the class leaders in this category, but the payload in the tray area is 790 kg rather than the expected 1000 kg. For those hauling a 3500 kg braked trailer with a towball downforce of 350 kg, the payload would reduce to 440 kg, further reduced still by the weight of rear seat passengers or other cargo. Buyers looking for higher payloads and more cargo area have only to wait until the second quarter of 2019 for a long-wheelbase version of the Musso to join the range. Payload for the incoming LWB versions will increase to 1020 kg, body length will increase by an additional 300 mm, and the rear suspension will revert to semi-elliptical rear leaf springs. At a time when the long-term players in this vehicle segment have top-spec models nudging the $70,000 mark, SsangYong brings in the three Musso variants with a national drive-away fixed pricing structure that ranges from $30,490 for the Musso EX six-speed manual (adding $2000 for the six-speed auto), rising to $35,990 for the auto-only Musso ELX and $39,990 for the Ultimate, again fitted as standard with the six-speed auto. This value-for-money scenario is not to be taken lightly. Delivery believes the brand will very quickly carve out an excellent reputation for what it brings to the buyer, reestablishing the SsangYong brand towards the upper end of the available alternatives. 12

IN THE BLACK Navara increases its options- Words by Warren Caves, Images by Torque it Up

T

here’s no arguing that the 4x4 dual cab ute market is one of the hottest contested markets for new vehicle sales in Australia, making up nearly half of all vehicles sold.

With such fierce competition, vehicle manufactures are constantly looking for a sales edge by offering incentives and value-added deals. To this end, Nissan has followed up the successful 2017 release of the ST-X-N-Sport, which was released in limited edition numbers of 500 units, with the Series 3 ST Black Edition. With added value said to be in the vicinity of $10,000 worth of accessories and styling enhancements, Nissan has toughened the look of its popular, mid-spec ST variant in a bid to sway potential buyers. Black is the new black, and as the title gives away, there’s a whole bunch of black stuff themed into the vehicle. Up front, a black grille sits behind a black nudge bar with matching coloured bumperettes, with the nudge bar providing a perfect mounting platform for the LED light bar. The fog lamp surrounds also receive the black treatment with a smoke bonnet protector continuing the theme, as do the black sports bars on the rear. Included in the Black Edition offering is a soft tonneau cover, tub liner and 12volt power outlet in the tub. To compliment the five colour choices of Polar White, Brilliant Silver, Cosmic Black, Slate Grey and Burning Red, the Black Edition features unique black decals adorning the sides and tailgate, announcing to any who may have not noticed that this is indeed a limited edition car (900 units).

NISSAN NAVARA Apart from the decals, the boldest addition to the Black Edition’s styling is the black bolt-on wheel arch flares and the 255/60/R18 all-terrain tyres on 18-inch black alloys. While the flares impose a more aggressive stance, I feel the tyre and wheel package could have been more complimentary to the bold body styling. For me, the look would be improved with a slightly taller tyre on the current 18-inch alloys and a little more outward offset on the rims to fill the flares a bit more. While not a deal breaker, in my opinion it looks more like a gym-going ute that keeps skipping ’leg day’. In a smart move by Nissan, the ST Black Edition leverages the popularity of the mid-spec ST model, in what I believe is a package tailored to attract a more youthful customer as well as tradies keen to ’out-ute’ their workmates. For the standard ST price, the ST Black Edition adds a whole lot of extra punch in terms of the type of value-add extras that ST buyers may well have ended up adding to their utes anyway. Buyers are treated to the standard ST interior, with the exception of a handy mobile device holder adjacent to the forward cupholder in the centre console. With my phone in place, this did not affect the ability to use the cupholder. The ST interior is well laid-out, with hard-wearing, extremely comfortable cloth seats and plenty of leg room for taller drivers. The rear seats are − as with most of the competition in this sector − just OK for short trips or kids. Leg room is adequate yet limited, and the back rest is quite upright. Refreshingly, though, rear seat passengers are treated to aircon vents located in the rear of the centre console. The centre console and glovebox compartment provide reasonable storage, as does the small tray on the dash-top that includes a 12volt power socket. As mentioned previously, there are two cupholders in the centre console, accompanied by two slide-out cupholders in front of the side aircon vents. I’m a big fan of these, as they do a great job of keeping drinks cold, particularly with aluminium cans. There are also door bottle storage pockets. The seven-inch infotainment system features USB and Bluetooth connectivity as well as satnav as standard, but misses out on Apple Car Play/Android Auto features. The sound system’s audio performance was not what I would call premium, and the digital radio reception dropped in and out in my local area, only about an hour from Sydney.

FEATURE The drivetrain remains unchanged, with Nissan’s 2.3-litre bi-turbo intercooled diesel powerplant producing 140 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque. Our test vehicle was fitted with the seven-speed automatic transmission but there is also a six-speed manual transmission available. Activating the 4x4 is an electronic dial affair with shift-onthe-fly operation and high/low range gearing options. With the sensible and practical addition of General Grabber all-terrain tyres, the Black Edition gains improved off-road capability straight out of the box from Nissan.

On the road, the Series 3 D23 Navara performs well and benefits from improved steering geometry and suspension tweaks over its predecessor. Handling and surefootedness are excellent, with good road feedback from the rack-andpinion steering and the five-link coil spring rear suspension. Good roadholding and manners from the rear end promote a sense of security even when pushed into gravel road corners, where the locally developed suspension with dual rate coils and fine-tuned shock absorbers seem on-point, resulting in good ride quality. The Navara’s traction control system is effective even on wet roads, stabilising the rear end and providing controlled directional stability under power.

On the performance front, the 2.3-litre engine pulls strongly and confidently from quite low in the rev range, thanks to the twin-turbo set-up. Power delivery is smooth and effortless when unladen and the seven-speed auto makes sensible choices − although I felt sometimes that downshift points could have held off a bit to utilise the low-rpm torque availability, perhaps also to the benefit of fuel economy. The sports auto mode allows just this to be done, and I found that the engine was more than capable of pulling the unladen ute up small inclines at low revs without downshifting. The sports auto mode also provides optimal gear selection when used off-road. A rear electronic locking deferential is standard fare and provides some peace of mind when extricating the Navara from precarious off-road situations. Frontal illumination comes via the projector LED headlights, giving a good general light pattern. This light performance is dutifully backed up by the Black Edition’s LED light bar, giving great all-round vision and spread, although distance lighting waned a bit short for my liking.

A reverse camera is a standard feature and the display shown within the infotainment system adds an overhead view of the immediate surroundings, further enhancing safety when reversing. I spent one week each in the ST Black Edition and the STX, to gain a genuine back-to-back evaluation. This gave a valuable insight into the differences of the two vehicles. As both vehicles were identical in driveline, driving evaluation and impressions are essentially the same. The only exception is the small increase in tyre noise from the all-terrain tyres that equip the Black Edition and of course, the improved off-road ability they bring. As one might expect, both grades of Navara have identical maximum braked trailer towing limits of up to 3500 kg. With a GCM of 5910 kg, a quick calculation of a typical towing scenario of a big caravan with two adults and 100 kg of gear in the vehicle would see the tow mark legally pulled up at about the 3300kg mark. The test period did not include any tow test opportunity, but in my opinion the Navara’s 2.3-litre engine has enough power and capability for general towing and periodic heavy towing without complaint. The familiarity of Australian buyers with larger displacement engines might cause some to question the potential longevity of an engine with a relatively small capacity when required to pull heavy loads for extended periods. A smaller 18

engine displacement equates to smaller components and smaller surface areas in bearings, bushes and crankshafts to carry the burden of high engine power outputs. Although the seven-speed transmission offsets some of these concerns, if the intention is to tow a 3500 kg trailer over a long-term period, an engine of larger capacity than 2.3 litres might be warranted. The average fuel economy for the test vehicle showed 9.0L/100km over the week in a mix of freeway driving up to 110km/h, as well as city traffic and rural roads. This is quite a bit short of the claimed average combined cycle of 7.0L/100km.


NISSAN NAVARA With the ST-X − Nissan’s flagship dual cab ute − retailing at $51,990, only a couple of thousand more than the ST Black Edition, some may say, why not just go for the ST-X? However, the differences need to be weighed up. Leather seats, downhill descent control, reverse parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, sturdy adjustable tub tie-down points, push-button start, and true keyless entry are all ST-X features missing from the Black Edition. Essentially, apart from the abovementioned features, the Black Edition and the ST-X are very similar in performance and practicality. It comes down to matters of personal taste and intended usage. If price is your main influencing factor, you would swap the highway terrain tyres fitted to the ST-X at the time of purchase for some all- terrain tyres, at which point the comparative price gap starts to expand. The Black Edition automatic, as tested, still comes in under the $50K mark at a retail price of $49,690 and is off-road ready with a generous assortment of add-ons. The Nissan Navara ST Black Edition is a really appealing product, as is the ST-X. The more car-like on-road presence of the coil spring suspension and improved articulation offroad, combined with a rear diff lock, makes for a practical all-round performer − whichever option you choose. With some dealers offering run-out pricing on 2018-plated stock, there could still be keen pricing levels around from those wanting to clear the decks ready for 2019 models. Look around your neighbourhood dealerships for further bargains.

MAZDA BT-50 XTR & GT AUTO Before Time – Mazda’s BT-50 retains its appeal as it heads towards future product sharing with Isuzu Ute - Words by Warren Caves, images by Torque it Up Photography In a bid to secure continued sales of its popular dual cab ute, Mazda has freshened up the venerable BT-50 with styling and equipment changes in the most comprehensive upgrade of the model since 2011. The next step is a completely new model, badged as a Mazda but developed with Isuzu Ute, and scheduled for release in 2020. Sales of the 4x2 versions in 2018 put the Mazda in fourth place with a market share of 11.8 percent, behind Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and Ford Ranger. Its 4x4 version scored a market share of 5.0 percent, again following HiLux and Ranger, but also Mitsubishi Triton,Holden Colorado, Nissan Navara, D-Max, Toyota Landcruiser and Volkswagen Amarok. The new-look Mazda BT-50 is a joint design upgrade by Mazda Corporation in Japan and the Australian-based EGR group, culminating in a model that will be exclusive to Australian customers. The core design platform remains largely unchanged. Retained is the MZ-CD 3.2-litre in-line five-cylinder turbodiesel engine and for our test, the six-speed automatic transmission with normal and performance modes as well as manual and sequential shifting options. Four-wheel-drive activation is via the rotary dial on the centre transmission console, enabling electronic, shift-on-the-fly operation from 2H to 4H at speeds of up to 120 km/h. Power ratings are unchanged at 147 kw of power at 3000rpm and 470 Nm of torque from a low 1750 to 2500 rpm, and the front suspension consists of a doublewishbone and coil spring set-up on the front, and leaf springs on the rear. The new-look Mazda BT-50 has undergone significant front-end design changes to achieve a stronger exterior look. To match the tougher stance, Mazda has stepped up the game by offering an impressive list of standard features across the range. 20

Safety features and programmes have carried over from the previous model to include EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), TSC (Trailer Sway Control), RSC (Roll Stability Control), HLA (Hill Launch Assist), TCS (Traction Control System), LAC (Load Adaptive Control), EBA (Emergency Brake assist), ABS and more, to deliver a five-star ANCAP safety rating. An electronic locking rear differential is standard across the entire 4x4 range, together with a reversing camera. A bold new bumper and grille have been added to create a wider

look and tougher frontal impression, and the popular XTR and flagship GT models feature chrome grille fins paired with dark grey bumper inserts over the satin black found on the lower XT models. In a first for Mazda, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard across all BT-50 grades, while the XTR and GT feature a larger eight-inch Alpine infotainment system over the seven-inch system in lower-spec models.The two latest specification offerings of the XTR and the GT have only subtle differences in features to appeal to varying tastes.

BT-50 XTR Dual Cab The spec here is for cloth trim seats with manual positioning adjustments. Manual lumbar adjustment is included, although I found the range insufficient to gain a good lower back arch. Generally, the seats felt firm and comfortable, and well suited to tall drivers on long distance touring duties. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and transmission selector knob add a touch of refinement. A soft tonneau was fitted to our test vehicle, which I found clunky and cumbersome to use and feel it would easily DELIVERY ISSUE 82

scratch the paint in careless hands with its metal lugs at the rear. Disappointingly, there’s no 12-volt power supply as standard fitment for the tub liner. A low-line, three-inch black nudge bar with spotlight mounts adorns the front of the ute. Black tubular sidesteps allow easy entry for the vertically challenged, although these do little in real-world unsealed road conditions to protect the lower sill from stone peppering. Lower bumper-mounted foglamps, chrome mirror skins, rear bumper accents and 17-inch alloy wheels round out the external styling.

BT-50 GT Dual Cab The GT shares a good deal of the features from the XTR, with a few noticeable differences. Standard fitment on the GT includes a tub liner and 12-volt accessory supply socket in the tub, polished alloy sports bars with a high-mount LED brake light, and chrome tubular sidesteps accentuated with black step point in-fills. Leather upholstered seats with electronic adjustment lift the interior space to more opulent levels. Both grades feature impressive standard equipment levels to include an eight-inch Alpine infotainment system featuring satnav and live traffic updates plus six-speaker sound, reversing camera and parking sensors. Staying charged and connected is easy with numerous 12-volt sockets front and rear, as well as USB and AUX sockets on the dash top which helps to manage the cabling for windscreen-mounted devices.

Steering wheel controls allow easy operation of the cruise control, phone and audio functions. Dual zone airconditioning is also fitted to both the XTR and GT. The 17-inch alloy wheels are the same across the two models, although I would have liked to see the GT with a bolder wheel and tyre package to differentiate itself from the XTR and strengthen its pose to a look worthy of the GT moniker. Both models feature a standard rear electronic differential lock. On the road, performance from the 3.2-litre engine was excellent, and while engine noise levels within the cabin were noticeable and even quite audible when pressed, it was not overbearing. The closely spaced ratios of the six-speed transmission kept the engine within its optimal torque band, alleviating any undue turbo lag. The manual sequential shift ability allowed for a more spirited drive experience for the adventurous, and would prove a prudent choice to provide increased engine braking when descending steep grades while towing heavy loads.

FEATURE Handling and cornering were refreshingly controlled for a leaf-sprung vehicle even when empty, with that impression reinforced when covering varying camber corners with uneven surfaces that proved no problem for the BT-50, even at speed. The ride comfort was a little stiff from the rear springs, as are most utes of this type. A little weight in the back did smooth things out a bit. I can’t help but wonder who will be the first manufacturer to develop an integrated, automaticallyadjusting air suspension arrangement to cater for weight differentiation and provide the perfect balance between comfortable unladen ride quality and load-carrying ability? That would surely be a winner. In the wet on two occasions I found the traction control being pressed into duty under power, taking off from a standstill for a right 90-degree turn. Its activation seemed a little slow, only really settling things down after a reasonable amount of wheelspin and subsequent tail kickout was sensed. Claimed fuel economy for the BT-50 on a combined cycle is 10.0 L/100km, which is fairly accurate. The GT returned a figure of 9.5 L/100km for the week-long test period, and the XTR showed a reading of 10.2 L/100km for the same duration but incorporating a long freeway-speed drive in high wind, which no doubt contributed to the increased fuel consumption. The long-serving, tough, capable all-rounder from Mazda should continue to see strong sales, with styling and equipment upgrades luring potential new buyers until the launch of the new model.

MAZDA BT-50 The smooth and powerful five-cylinder workhorse, with up to 3500 kg towing capacity, has been a popular choice as a caravan tow vehicle and tradie toolbox for some time now. The larger displacement engine proves a less-stressed powerplant for the heavy lifting jobs, with potential for greater longevity when compared to some of the competitors’ sub-3.0-litre engine alternatives. There are a couple things I didn’t like about the Mazda BT50. Firstly, the rear seating is pretty ordinary for full-sized humans, being too upright and with minimal leg room. The ride unladen was a tad firm, though I could overlook this if I was planning on putting the vehicle to work - a dual functionality always requires a compromise somewhere. For me, the reversing camera is far too bright at night. I regularly operate vehicles in unlit transport yards in the wee small hours where there is little to no outside lighting. When reverse is selected, the display is too bright and when switching from looking in the mirrors to the display, my eyes could not adjust quickly enough, resulting in temporary blindness when looking outside again. I did try to find an adjustment for brightness, with no success. While the GT commands a price of $54,990 driveaway over the $51,990 for the XTR, I found the XTR to have a more elegant feel about it (well, as elegant as a ute can be). Or perhaps it was the white colour of the GT tested, which I don’t like (white utes just scream council car to me). With the only real difference being the leather seats and electric adjustment for the GT, my money would go to the XTR.

AMAZING PACE

T

here’s a lot to be said for knowing the history of a brand, especially when considering the purchase of a new ute with your own money.

It’s now 10 years since Isuzu Ute Australia took responsibility for marketing the D-MAX to the Australian market. In that time the brand has gone from zero sales to break the 100,000 barrier, ending 2018 having retailed a total of 112,536 D-MAX models, aided and abetted by sales of the MU-X SUV that have now reached 35,284 units. In that decade of growth, the D-MAX has maintained its reputation as the ute that engineers and mechanics prefer above all comers. As one experienced independent local mechanic told Delivery; “The Isuzu people design and build trucks, and have transferred their technology and reliability downwards into a ute. Other competitors that manufacture utes start from the other end of the spectrum and try to turn a car into a ute.“If you are looking for reliability, strength and longevity, go for the D-MAX,” he added. 26

Throughout the past decade, Delivery has owned three D-MAX models, starting with a single cab tray back that was subsequently replaced by a 2012 space cab tray back and a 2015 crew cab that remain in the fleet today. Delivery, therefore, has first-hand experience of the reliability factor; and apart from body damage resulting from animal strikes while operating in the rural area around Scone, in NSW, any mechanical concerns have been confined to general servicing, plus one steering rod ball joint and an EGR valve replacement. From a heritage perspective, Isuzu Trucks − the parent company of Isuzu Ute − this year will celebrate its 30th consecutive year of commercial vehicle market leadership in Australia. When you look at the way the D-MAX is designed and manufactured, you can appreciate the strength built in to the product.

It starts with the chassis − a ladder-frame style with six cross members on the standard range, increasing to seven cross members on 4x4 and 4x2 Hi-Ride models.

turbocharger is a variable geometry unit and the fuel injection system uses the latest high pressure, common rail design.

The front suspension on all models is independent, using coil springs, upper and lower wishbones and a stabiliser bar. The rear suspension on 4x4s uses a conventional solid beam axle mounted on semi-elliptical leaf springs. The steering system is by rack-and-pinion with engine-speedsensitive variable power assistance.

We are yet to find an unhappy Isuzu Ute engine owner and it’s got all the right recommendations by way of support. The big difference, though, is how the engine delivers its power and torque. It feels tougher than anything else on the market and its strength enables it to hold a ratio longer on a steep climb. It also shows this ability at low speeds when off-road, and carrying a full payload.

The heart of any ute is its engine, and we reckon that Isuzu has the strongest of any model on sale in Australia. From day one the power and performance has come from a 3.0-litre, in-line four-cylinder turbocharged diesel with a double overhead camshaft design and 16 valves. With chain-driven overhead camshafts you don’t have to worry about breaking rubber V-belts, the valve design features roller rockers, and the combustion chambers have a variable swirl system to improve combustion. The

Isuzu fits something it calls first gear stall saver, which brings in electronic engine control when in first gear, low range and with the manual gearbox. Ease your foot off the clutch and the engine just idles the ute up from wherever you happen to be, climbing the steepest gradients, never seeming to miss a beat or stall. It works really well, even when fully laden, and is streets ahead in delivering engine torque to all four wheels compared with the competition in this category. DELIVERY ISSUE 82

Slight increases in power have seen the output grow to 130 kW at 3600 rpm, with a rise in torque rating to 430 Nm at 2000 to 2200 rpm, then reducing to 380 Nm. Transmission choice is now either a six-speed manual or automatic. Fuel economy is a claimed 7.2 L/100 km, ranging up to 8.1 L/100km for the ADR combined cycle, from its 76-litre tank. During 2018, Isuzu UTE Australia established a new annual sales record of 27,640 vehicles — successfully growing the two-car brand by 7.1 percent year on year. Its highest-ever December sales result, 3244 vehicles, was an increase of 10.5 per cent on the previous year. It ended the year in 4th position in its class, outselling the Holden Colorado (18,301), Nissan Navara (16,469) and Volkswagen Amarok (9,290).

The X350d is available in two trim variants − the Progressive, with a base retail price (including GST but excluding on road costs) of $73,270, and the top-of-therange Power, costing $79,415. In the ‘base’ Progressive model, key highlights include 18inch light alloy wheels, seven airbags, ‘Audio 20’ head unit with Garmin map pilot navigation, cloth trim, manual seat adjustment, Keyless GO, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and park brake lever. The extra $6145 for the Power model adds LED headlights and LED partial taillights, COMAND Audio and navigation unit, a 360-degree camera with front and rear parking sensors, 19-inch alloys, aluminum trim dashboard, black roof liner, electric seats, Artico man-made leather seats, and additional chrome exterior highlights.

uch anticipation has surrounded the new V6-powered variant of Mercedes-Benz’s attention-grabbing ute, the X350d V6. Following the initial launch in early 2017 of the four-cylinder-powered X220d and X250d featuring Nissan-derived engines and transmissions, the X350d is regarded by purists as the ‘true’ Mercedes with an engine and transmission arrangement directly sourced from the Mercedes-Benz group. Powering the X350d is a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 190 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, linked to Mercedes’ 7G Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h for the V6 ute is a useful 7.9 seconds, and combined cycle fuel consumption is claimed at 8.8L/100 km.

The vehicle tested for this review was the Progressive variant, which had options fitted including metallic paint ($950) and the style pack ($3350) which provides privacy glass on rear windows, electric rear window, side steps, roof rails, LED headlights and partial LED tail lights. Also included was an additional and very worthwhile bedliner ($899) and a full tow kit (including electric trailer brakes) for $2063. These options brought the price of the vehicle up to $82,083 including GST (but excluding on road costs). To my mind, if you are spending that sort of money on a ute, you would be better off spending the additional $6145 for the X350d Power model, to bring in some essential items that are otherwise not included in the Progressive trim grade. That includes the electric seats and parking sensors which, on a vehicle of this size (and price), should be mandatory. Our X350d, with its black 18-inch wheels, black roll bar and black privacy glass (along with black metallic paint) was an impressive-looking vehicle. During a trip to Melbourne’s beachside suburb of St Kilda on a sunny Sunday afternoon, I was amazed at the attention the ute caught. DELIVERY ISSUE 82

FEATURE Numerous people stared and pointed as I drove down some of the heavily populated streets. If you want a vehicle that turns heads, the X-Class is ideal. From the power and torque figures mentioned above, it’s obvious that this is a quick vehicle. Impressive both from a standstill and also when overtaking, the huge shove driven by that torque figure makes light work of shifting the 2166 kg kerb weight. Where the V6 made a huge difference was with towing. As mentioned in my review of the X250d last year, the four-cylinder engine is fine to haul around its own weight;

however, if you were to tow the legal maximum weight of 3500 kg, it would be left lacking. Hooking onto a Pegasus horse float for the evaluation of the X350d demonstrated it was seriously capable, making light effort of both the weight and wind resistance of the tall box hooked to the towbar. The X350d would be a handy unit for someone wanting to tow a heavy boat, caravan, or horse float. I imagine Benz has the ‘grey nomads’ in mind when it markets this vehicle, as it would be a powerful, economical, comfortable and safe vehicle for long-distance caravanning journeys. Unlike the four-cylinder variant, the V6 also includes Benz’s Dynamic Select system, which allows the driver to chose from Economy, Comfort, Sport or Off-Road settings, enabling the driver to customize the engine response and transmission shift strategy.

FEATURE The V6 X-Class also has a full time four-wheel-drive system known as 4Matic. With this system the driver has the ability to lock the centre diff, and there is also a rear diff lock, and low-range gearbox as standard fit. The ute is also fitted with steering wheel paddle shifts, should the driver wish to directly control the gear shifts, which is always useful when travelling off-road. I found the steering quite heavy, particularly when negotiating tight car parks, and I would appreciate additional assistance from the power steering system. When it comes to competitors, the most obvious is the V6 Amarok TDI 580, featuring the same 190 kW output as the Benz, with slightly more torque at 580 Nm. Other competitors, albeit from different classes of vehicles, would be the Toyota Landcruiser GXL V8 turbo-diesel dual cabin, and then some imported options including the Chevrolet Silverado and the RAM 1500. The ride comfort of the Mercedes is class-leading. Although its closest competitor is probably the V6 Amarok, as VW did not make a model available for subjective analysis, I cannot compare it directly. Compared to the other Japanese utes, which I drove back-to-back with the X-Class, the Benz comes out easily on top, largely due to the coil spring suspension found both at the front and rear of the ute – which is quite unusual in this class of vehicle.

X-CLASS

The coil springs provide improved ride quality and are better off-road, due to their ability to offer increased axle articulation in rough terrain. Furthermore, payload is not compromised, as the spring is progressive in nature, which offers a legal payload of 1034 kg. The interior is near-identical to the X250d, with many interior features borrowed from the C-Class passenger car. There’s a 7-inch colour display mounted like an iPad in the centre of the dash, along with the steering wheel, gauge package and the knob mounted near the gear selector to control the functions on the infotainment system. Unfortunately, the Progressive model misses out on the smart-looking aluminum dash trim. In-cabin storage is quite limited with a small centre console and small cup holders, which made storage of daily necessities like phone, keys and wallet somewhat difficult. As with the 250d, this ute includes an electrically sliding rear window, which would be ideal when carrying long items such as a fishing rod or a set of skis as it allows them to poke from the tray into the cabin. Also ideal if you have a dog! Another unique feature that I liked a lot was the adjustable tie-down points in the tray. There are two on each side of the tray that, once unlocked, can be slid along a track, allowing them to be positioned in the most appropriate spot to tie down the cargo being carried. For instance, they’d be ideal when carrying motorbikes as they can be adjusted to the most secure tie-down position. The X350d is an impressive package, and would be a welcome addition to my garage any time. If I was spending this kind of money on a ute in this class, I would definitely pay the extra $6000-plus to get the Power grade. DELIVERY ISSUE 82

COOL AND CALCULATED Thermo King thinks outside the usual square to bring new solutions to old ideas

G

ood food needs good refrigeration to keep it fresh. For a long time, the insulated transport industry has been following the same process of attaching a small-capacity diesel engine to the front bulkhead of a box body and running two engines throughout the day. The main engine runs the van or truck, while the power source for the refrigeration unit churns away on its own, keeping the cargo space cool and effective.

The first question that needs to be asked is: why do we need two engines? Followed immediately by: how can we do this better? When we start off looking at the small van and light truck segments of the commercial vehicle market, refrigeration experts Thermo King bring their solution to the table for discussion with the all-electric B-Series refrigeration units. These zero-emission units for small trucks and vans are designed for inner-city distribution and last-mile deliveries in restricted urban areas.

The B-Series covers all types of applications including fresh, frozen and heat products, and pharmaceutical applications because of good distribution practice (GDP) qualification. GDP guidelines ensure that the high level of product quality, determined by good manufacturing practices, is maintained throughout the entire distribution chain. New B-Series units are fully compatible with internal combustion engine (ICE) and full-electric vehicles, which allows distribution companies to operate a zero-emission and fully-electric powered refrigeration fleet. Part of the B-Series range, the B-100 ECO units, have been specifically developed to meet the extreme low consumption requirements of small electric vehicles. The tests conducted on various small electric vans available in the market showed a limited impact of 5 to 8.5 percent on the range of the vehicle, considering a delivery run of eight hours with 32 door openings of two minutes each. This means that the standard 12-volt auxiliary battery of the electric vehicle is enough to power the B-100 ECO unit, and there is no requirement for additional batteries.


THERMO KING The low power consumption of the B-Series ECO units (48 amps at 12V) makes them also a good fit for ICE vehicles when there is no possibility to upgrade the van’s alternator. The B-Series ECO units cover fresh and heat applications. In examples such as fitment to the Citroën Berlingo to be powered by its standard 12-volt auxiliary battery, the Thermo King B-100 ECO unit doesn’t require additional power sources to provide full autonomy. All B-series models are available with low global warming potential (GWP) R-452a and R-134a refrigerant options across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Iñaki Fernandez Blanco, head of engineering for Vehicle Powered Truck at Thermo King, said: “Unlike the B-100 ECO, alternative small fully electric refrigeration units available on the market today require installation of an additional and costly battery in order to provide full autonomy to the unit.. “The tests showed that this additional battery pack of approximately 90 kilograms impacts the electric vehicle’s range by 3 percent. This makes the cost, space and weight factors critical in choosing the most efficient and reliable fullyelectric small refrigerated van solution and paving the way for inner-city, last mile deliveries that are truly zero-emission”.

To make sure the refrigeration unit and the van are running as expected and meeting customer expectations, the B-100 ECO unit can be connected through Thermo King TracKing™ telematics to allow for easy monitoring and analysing of the refrigerated operations. This ensures temperature control, compliance and maximum uptime — without taking the vehicle off the road. TracKing Connected Solutions are available across all Thermo King direct drive units and offer 24/7 visibility of the vehicle, the unit’s performance and the load condition. This allows fleet managers to access critical unit data through a computer or mobile device, and interact with the unit to ensure that the load is protected at all times and the unit is running at it most efficient. Renault is a leader in the development of electric delivery vehicles with its Kangoo Z.E. in the small van segment. When the time came to find a solution for a larger van, Thermo King turned its test protocol to the Renault Master, partnering with Petit Forestier, a European leader in refrigeration rental, to showcase an all-electric, zeroemission and zero-noise refrigerated van. Petit Forestier’s Renault Master Z.E. is a 3100 kg electric van equipped with the first Thermo King E-200 full-electric refrigeration unit available in the market.

The breakthrough set-up of the E-200 unit provides constant cooling and heating capacities independently of the vehicle operation. Designed for both electric and engine-powered vans and trucks below 3500 kg, the key differentiators of the E-200 include increased uptime and utilisation, with an improved maintenance interval, higher reliability with customised components, and improved temperature control thanks to constant capacity based on actual need of the moment. The intelligent power management algorithm helps safeguard and optimise the power supply, with an optional hold-over battery capacity independent from the vehicle. Also optional is the embedded Thermo King telematics system, which allows effective management of the fleet with full visibility of both unit and load conditions. The E-200 uses components not seen before in the refrigerated transport industry. Chief among these is a new controller that can adapt the capacity based on the actual need, available power and manage different available power sources at the same time. With the unit fitted with the optional TK battery, the controller manages different power sources at the same time, to get hold-over capacity during stops for deliveries or breaks.

All major components of the E-200 are integrated, making it a plug-and-play solution that requires no vehicle modifications to function and eliminates the issues and costs associated with installation. Thermo King telematics systems again allow effective management of the fleet with full visibility of both unit and load conditions. The E-200 is available with low global warming potential (GWP) R-452a and R-134a refrigerant options to meet the efficiency requirements of high ambient and low ambient temperature applications. Delivery was present during the launch of the Thermo King vision of the future, which it called Thermotopia, at the IAA event in Hanover. Thermotopia is a fictional city of the future where the transport refrigeration industry ensures the safety of transported foods and goods for rising populations while eliminating smog, congestion and excessive noise. Technology helps transport companies to stay ahead of regulations and grow their businesses with increasingly cost-effective and environmentally-sustainable solutions. CHINA CALLING

Competitive pricing helps LDV to more than double its market share

C

hinese van maker LDV flew under the radar in 2018, quietly growing its market share and producing a growth rate to the end of November of 145 percent (source: VFACTS). Sales increased from 2017 to the corresponding 11-month period of 2018 from 2315 to 5679 vehicles, represented by the LDV G10 van, G10 People Mover, T60 4x2 and 4x4 ute, and V80 van and bus. LDV’s parent company, SAIC Motor Corporation, is no third-rate manufacturer. With origins dating back to the late 1940s, this Chinese state-owned automotive design and manufacturing company had the largest production volume of any Chinese automaker when, in 2014, it built more than 4.5 million vehicles. In 2010, SAIC acquired the intellectual property rights to what had once been known as Leyland DAF Vans from administrator Pricewaterhouse Coopers, subsequently commencing manufacturing in China in 2011 under its Maxus division. The Australian van line-up starts with the medium-sized G10, which offers the choice of a turbocharged petrol 2.0-litre four-cylinder, a naturally aspirated petrol 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or a 1.9-litre, turbocharged diesel four-cylinder.

LDV Power and torque come in at 105 kW/200Nm, 165 kW/330Nm and 106 kW/350Nm respectively. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual for the 2.4-litre, a ZF six-speed auto for the 2.0-litre turbo, and a six-speed manual or auto for the diesel. Pricing ranges from $27,358 to $30,516. Moving up in size is the LDV V80 Low Roof SWB (short-wheelbase) in manual and automatic form at a driveaway price of $32,621 and $34,736. ABN holders get the preferential treatment, with a reduction to $30,990 and $32,990 respectively.

Moving up to the LDV V80 Mid Roof LWB (longwheelbase) brings in driveaway six-speed manual pricing of $37,886, with the auto at $39,989 ($35,990 and $37,990 for ABN holders). At the top of the van range, pricing for the LDV V80 High Roof LWB hits $39,989 and $42,095 (manual and automatic driveaway), with ABN holders paying $37,990 and $39,990. Along with a revised pricing structure, the 2019 models have stronger frontal styling, contributing a more purposeful appeal for quite a long-standing design. The engine throughout the V80 van range is a VM Motori Eco 2.5-litre turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder diesel with Bosch common rail direct injection that produces 100 kW at 3800 rpm, with peak torque of 330 Nm rated at 1800 to 2600 rpm.

FEATURE From an engineering perspective it’s all pretty conventional, with MacPherson struts and coils on the front and taper leaf springs on the rear, plus disc brakes all-round. Standard features include sliding doors on both sides, plus barn doors at the rear with 16-inch alloy rims running 215/75/R16 tyres. Technically and electronically, it’s not disadvantaged. Every V80 buyer benefits from ABS braking, electronic stability control, hill hold, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist system, reverse parking sensors, reversing camera, driver and passenger SRS airbags, and central locking. Buyers of the LWB version gain blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning systems. When compared to long-standing brands such as the Ford Transit, the base specification stands up well. Admittedly, the wider range of wheelbases, cargo lengths and roof heights of the Ford are not available, but most buyers can cope with what is offered dimensionally, especially when everything is included in a one-sizefits-all driveaway pricing structure. To reach the same level of inclusions as Ford usually brings a hefty series of extra costs, illustrating that Ford product planners have little interest in the practicality of the specification. For them, it’s all about technology and voice-activated command systems that annoy drivers more than the old alternative of pressing a button. Payload figures come in at 1204 kg for the SWB, rising to 1419 kg for the LWB Mid Roof and dropping back slightly to 1389 kg for the LWB High Roof. As most vans in this segment carry volume rather than weight, that’s all acceptable to the average buyer. The maximum towing limit for a braked trailer is 1200 kg, but very few buyers would consider towing an important part of the purchase decision, as the extra length compounds problems when parking.

LDV

With cruise control, power windows, a sound system and three years’ roadside assistance, the warranty of 100,000 km is somewhat on the short side of distance travelled if buyers are going to be made to feel comfortable at the time of vehicle selection. Nobody raves about driving a van − it either works well or doesn’t, and with some good safety features and driver aids to assist with parking, that’s usually enough to keep the owner or driver satisfied.

The actual driving experience is little different from its competition, although there are indications that higher-priced alternatives feel more solid and more dynamic in performance. The customer receiving the parcels certainly won’t notice that the van bringing them was $15,000 cheaper than a Europeanmanufactured alternative. As long as it starts and stops when required, and parts are available on demand, expect sales to continue to rise.

VANTASTIC The award-winning Mercedes-Benz Sprinter just raised the bar – again. Words by Warren Caves, Images by Torque it Up.

W

ithin days of the launch of the all-new Series Three Mercedes-Benz Sprinter into Australia, Delivery magazine hit the highway with two examples of the more than 1700 variants available for a combined three-week test evaluation. The two available models were the MWB High Roof Van and the MWB Cab Chassis rear-wheel-drive models. Both were equipped with a four-cylinder, 2.1-litre, turbocharged, intercooled diesel engine, producing 105kW of power and 330Nm of torque and 120kW / 360Nm respectively. Both models feature Euro 6 emission compliance with the use of SCR (ad-blue), and are mated to the 7G-Tronic sevenspeed automatic transmission that is a familiar tool across the Mercedes Benz range.

The Series Three Sprinter receives some subtle external refinements, but the real surprise is on the inside. Mercedes Benz has focused on improving technology and comfort levels to enhance the operating experience within the medium to large van market, whilst also increasing safety levels. I had a very short introduction to the new Sprinter in Slovenia in mid-2018, which comprised a couple of hours’ driving in a variety of conditions. I was keen to gain a more in-depth impression of the Series Three Sprinter on home turf. The Slovenian drive was in a 105 kW version of the Sprinter, which handled its 300 kg payload without too much fuss.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 314 MWB High Roof Van (105 kW) Driven unladen on open freeways and regional Australian rural roads, the Sprinter Van accomplished and maintained speed limits without any real fuss, and did so quietly and quite nimbly for a large van. Adding a payload of around 300 to 400 kg of fencing timber proved an ideal test load for a run up and over the famous Razorback Range, south of Sydney. This pressed the 2.1-litre engine a little harder, sending the tacho needle up to the 3700 rpm mark with some associated engine noise apparent; however, maintaining the posted 80 km/h speed up the hill was no problem, requiring only mid to three-quarter throttle to ascend the range and negotiate its corners.

Descending the other side also posed no issues. With the manual shift paddles engaged to lock in a suitable gear for engine braking to control descent speed, only minimal use of the foot brake was required. The 7G-Tronic transmission is a smooth operator, intelligently selecting appropriate ratios most of the time. Shifts were slick, and the relationship between the engine and transmission harmonious. For the sporty at heart, the paddle levers for manual shifting are located behind the steering wheel spokes. Ride comfort for a big van was reasonable, and cornering was as expected for a vehicle with a high centre of gravity, inducing some noticeable levels of body roll.

FEATURE The steering was extremely light, thanks to the electronically-assisted power steering system, something that would make for a relaxed day running parcels around city environs. The turning circle was impressive for a large van, further enhancing the Sprinter’s practicality. The greatest changes in the Series Three Sprinter are noticed in the cabin space. The days of hard-as-nails seats, a basic radio and limited driver comfort and safety seem to thankfully be fading, at least as far as the Sprinter is concerned. Both test vehicles featured almost identical interior provisions. What really grabs the eye upon entry is the 10.25-inch MBUX screen (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia system. This is optional over the standard fare seven-inch screen and has been adapted from the A-Class hatchback. The system features satellite navigation, plus audio and Bluetooth functions. A raft of extra features enables future connectivity to company IT systems, which is set to allow direct interface to company inventory and delivery systems for a more streamlined transport operation. The MBUX system can be controlled via controls on the left steering wheel spoke, or via its touchscreen. Voice operation is also available, with which I had mixed success. Sometimes it understood me, other times not.

The right-hand steering wheel spoke houses function buttons for the radar cruise control, speed limiter and in-dash information panel display for engine operational statistics, trip meter, digital speedo display and the like. Storage options were abundant with six drink holders, door pockets, under-seat openings, open dash-top recesses and overhead shelf areas for storing and keeping the workplace tidy. On the top of the dash is a pop-up lid covering charging sockets and power outlets, as well as an optional charging pad for wireless charging of supported mobile devices. The only thing missing for me would be a centre console bin between the seats with a lift-up lid for storing bulkier items and keeping valuables out of sight, although this space can also be utilised for a third seat option. If safety is a priority, the Sprinter does not disappoint. SRS front and side airbags protect both occupants. Lanekeeping assist, crosswind assist, active brake assist, blind spot assist, ABS, radar cruise control and an amazing elevated view on the 10.25-inch screen from the reverse camera mounted high above the rear doors are all to be commended. These features bring new levels of safety to a market that until recently was not known for advanced safety features. The large-framed rear doors do, however, obstruct the view directly behind the van via the rear-view mirror, effectively hiding a vehicle presence at a distance as close as 30 metres or so.


MB SPRINTER Seating in the Series Three Sprinter is top-notch, and our test vehicle featured the optional comfort seat pack. As the name suggests, the seats are extremely comfortable and supportive, with good rearward adjustment for tall operators and manual adjustments for the base and seat back, accompanied by electric adjustment for lumbar. Both front seats feature an armrest on the inboard side.

The standard Continental tyres produced quite an audible hum from the cargo area, which acts as a large amplifier, and some panel creak was also noticeable. Recessed tiedown points within the floor were sensibly located and felt quite secure. The only downside was the absence of any wall-mounted area to which goods can be strapped and secured (which I wanted to do).

The semi-automatic climate-controlled air conditioning struggled to drag the temperature down to a comfortable level within the occupant space in a short timeframe, with several factors influencing this. Ambient temperatures were in the high 30s, the van was black, the absence of a bulkhead behind the seats meant that the aircon had to cool a large area, and sometimes the ECO stop/start feature turned the engine off when stopped, further compounding the problem. (In view of the effort required to combat ambient temperatures, I eventually turned this feature off.)

Fuel economy for the test period in the van showed 650 km on the odometer from the 71-litre tank when the reserve fuel supply warning came up on the MBUX screen, despite there being two bars showing on the incremental fuel gauge. I looked, but could not familiarise myself enough with the system (even when using the owner handbook) to locate the average fuel usage display. Surmising that there would have been 8 to 10 litres of fuel left in the tank at this point, an average fuel consumption of somewhere between 8.5 to 9.0 litres/100 kms would be an estimate.

A positive to all this cavernous cargo space of nine cubic metres is the seemingly insatiable appetite for freight, although to utilise this space to its full capacity, a bulkhead or cargo barrier would need to be installed for safety purposes. Adding to the huge volume cargo area, a 3550 GVM with a payload of 1316kg makes the Sprinter van a very versatile piece of kit.

There were only a couple of minor points that I didn’t like. The forward grab handle for entry is fixed to the inside of the door; when the door is open, the handle swings too far forward for comfortable use.

FEATURE The automatic transmission selector lever is positioned on the right-hand stalk behind the steering wheel, a common location for the indicator on Japanese-built vehicles. For those unfamiliar with the Benz positioning, it is easy to select Neutral by mistake when applying what you thought was the left indicator. I did this on numerous occasions early in my test period, until I retrained my brain. This was easily corrected by pushing the gear shift selector lever down to re-engage Drive. In summary, the Sprinter 314 CDI van performed well, and would be highly suited to task, with comfort and safety levels to satisfy the duty-of-care needs of most employers. During my two-week test period I had no problem utilising the van for all my normal household duties including shopping, post-Christmas “tip runs”, bringing home building and fencing materials, and social visits to friends − although the Esky looked a little lonely in that huge cargo space. Our vehicle as tested was fitted with the following optional extras: • Comfort seat pack ($715) • 7G-TRONIC auto transmission ($2875) • Wireless smartphone charging tray ($185) • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC ($1067) • Leather steering wheel ($231) • MBUX system with 10.25-inch screen ($1584) • High roof ($2050) • Digital radio ($246) • Chrome grille ($415) • Metallic paint ($2200) This results in a total retail price of $68,042 including GST + ORCs

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 516 MWB Cab Chassis (120 kW)

MB SPRINTER

The Sprinter 516 Cab Chassis shared similar characteristics to the Sprinter Van, with a few exceptions. The 516 Cab Chassis was fitted with the same family of 2.1-litre engine, with an increased output of 120 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque. This would be beneficial to accommodate the extra weight-carrying capacity of a 2315 kg payload, equating to a GVM of 4.49 tonnes. Driving around unladen, I didn’t notice any great difference between the two engines − both performed adequately. Both vehicles were also fitted with the same 7G-TRONIC, seven-speed automatic transmission. Understandably, the Cab Chassis version of the Sprinter was a lot firmer in the rear suspension when unladen; however, there was no evidence of axle hop or excessive traction loss on corners or when taking off from a standstill. A partially loaded test involved 1000 kg of freight placed in the 3600 mm x 2120 mm tray, which smoothed out the ride somewhat and gave the engine a workout. The vehicle seemed unstressed by the challenge and held its own when negotiating freeway traffic or overtaking slower vehicles. At no point was a wide-open throttle required to extract the necessary performance. The steel tray, with aluminium sides fitted, seemed of rugged construction with a solid headboard, incorporating ladder racks and an adjustable rear rack. Adjustments to the rear rack require the removal of bolts in order to raise the rack and re-fit it, whereas a pin or latch system might be more functional for some users. The side latches are quite sturdy, clamping the tray sides firmly and resulting in a rattle-free experience. A fold-out rear step is located on the tailgate panel, which felt a bit flimsy. A notable and sorely missed omission from the Cab Chassis was a reversing camera. I find it difficult to judge rear closing distance when parking vehicles fitted solely with convex wing mirrors. The Cab Chassis also missed out on the blind spot assist lights embedded in the wing mirrors. The air conditioning, unlike in the van, had no difficulties in cooling the reduced space within the cabin. The Sprinter Cab Chassis as tested was fitted with the following optional extras: • Comfort seat pack ($715) • 7G-TRONIC ($2875) • DISTRONIC ($1067) • Leather steering wheel ($231) • MBUX 10.25-inch ($1584) • Steel tray with aluminium sides ($4626) • Rear ladder rack ($611) This results in a total retail price of $69,257 including GST + ORCs The Mercedes Benz Series Three Sprinter models we tested offer a myriad of design and configuration options, tailorable to almost any application. I CAME, I SAW, I VENTURED Trekking in the Blue Mountains with the I-Venture Club

Isuzu D-MAX ute and MU-X buyers are special. So special in fact that Isuzu Ute Australia runs a special fun-filled escape adventure in different areas of the country where owners gain expert tuition in how to get the best from their vehicles when travelling off the bitumen.

The mountains to the west of Sydney present challenges even today, although less strenuous than it was for the likes of explorers Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth, who completed the first trek across in 1813.

Isuzu’s determination to provide great aftersales customer support goes way past that of its competitors in order to show D-MAX and MU-X owners the abilities of their vehicles, as well as developing skills, all wrapped up in a good time under the heading of I-Venture.

The Isuzu I-Venture club is taking the convoy through the magnificent bush regions either side of the highway, using tranquil tracks through the scrub that require genuine offroad ability of the vehicle and some skills behind the wheel.

Delivery recently joined an I-Venture group of owners across some of the more challenging terrain of the Blue Mountains in NSW, taking a far less direct but more scenic path through the reserves and national parks than the direct run on the Great Western Highway.

The D-MAX utility and its MU-X sibling offer the mechanical skill set to complete some challenging tracks to stunning lookouts, the first foray of about 500 km on largelyunsealed roads over the following three days. The drivers are supported by 4WD trainer, David Wilson, who imparts advice, instruction and directions, in tandem with tour guide Greg ‘Simmo’ Simpson, a Bathurst local.


D-MAX I-VENTURE CLUB

This is no sojourn on graded pristine back roads to wineries for wines matched to undersized meals on oversized plates. The convoy has varying experience levels of drivers, but it is soon traversing rocky, rutted tracks, with less-experienced drivers (and their passengers) having any concerns allayed by instructions over the two-way radio, or by Mr. Wilson on foot. The convoy winds its way through the scrubby Gardens of Stone National Park, taking in the panoramic view from the Lost City lookout over Marrangaroo. It is the fourth year of the Isuzu programme, with more than 2100 customers participating in over 100 day-trip or longweekend events, ranging from driver training days to longweekend trips of the same ilk as the Blue Mountains event. Interest remains strong, with weekend trips like this run selling out in a matter of days – the training days cost $300,

which covers two people with vehicle, breakfast and lunch, and a dedicated 4x4 trainer. The longer format trips generally cost between $1500 for three days or $2000 for a four-day sojourn, and that covers two people, all food and non-alcoholic beverages, the trainer and overnight accommodation. Isuzu Ute Australia’s marketing and public relations general manager, Mike Conybeare, said the I-Venture Club was all about enabling customers to experience the lifestyle that comes with owning an Isuzu vehicle. “We take the time to educate our customers in a safe and controlled environment and equip them with the tools they need to confidently ‘go their own way’,” he said. FEATURE Mr. Conybeare said the programme was a key factor in the brand’s ongoing success. “Our aim is to inform and educate our drivers on the correct way to tackle any terrain in a way that both looks after the vehicle and the safety of its passengers. Most of them are blown away by the inherent capability of the vehicle offroad and are empowered to then head off and enjoy all the benefits that owning an Isuzu offers,” he added. The convoy is well fed and watered, with the lunch stop in the quirky village kiosk – once the pub – of Newnes, a highlight. Nestled deep in the Wolgan Valley, surrounded by thick bush and abrupt and tall rocky peaks, there’s precious little to interrupt the tranquillity, made even better by an absence of mobile phone coverage. After an overnight stop in Wallerawang, the Isuzu convoy returned to the bush, heading into the Ben Bullen State Forest. The rookies were feeling a little more at ease behind the wheel, coming to grips with the talents of their vehicles and growing in confidence. The lookout over Wolgan Gap provided a stunning backdrop for selfies and a group shot. Steep downhill sections soon tested the confidence of the drivers and the mettle of the machinery. The group all negotiated the slippery rock-riddled and deeply-rutted section under the direction of Mr. Wilson, with instructions and humour in equal measure. Lurching through ruts and lifting wheels like seasoned campaigners, the participants repeatedly expressed amazement at the terrain their vehicles could cover, as well as praise for the brand and its customer programme. A dusk gold-panning lesson on the banks of the Turon River was a quirky conclusion to the day, which finished with dinner and overnight accommodation in Bathurst.

A few relaxed laps of the famous Mount Panorama motor racing circuit – a public road and NSW Highway Patrol turf for most of the year – preceded more off-roading, this time through the Mount Walker and the Marrangaroo National Parks. The vehicles and their occupants were again challenged by slippery rock-riddled tracks, as well as some creek crossings.

It’s interesting to note that Isuzu Ute Australia is the only vehicle retailer in Australia to actively promote vehicle familiarisation and driver training options to its customers. In Thailand the company operates an off-road driver training centre that is world class. By extending this experience to Australian buyers, Isuzu puts more back into the value of ownership, increasing the appeal of a brand that has the reputation of being one of the most reliable in the market.

At the end of the I-Venture journey, the crew tucked into pub lunches and reflected on the 500 km jaunt, during which confidence and skill grew, enthusiasm for four-

he term “watching your back” is very familiar in defence vernacular; but when you travel on Australian roads in the country at night, it’s equally important to consider just who or what is “watching your front”.

Delivery fully understands the concerns of city-dwellers when they see 4WDs with full-frontal protection systems driving around urban streets, with little likelihood of venturing further than the local reserve. The sight of some heavily modified 4WDs with high-lift suspension kits and over-the-top bullbars and roll cages can be confronting to drivers in small hatchbacks, prompting a knee-jerk reaction for bullbars to be removed before entering the city.

At the other end of the spectrum, bullbars supplied through new vehicle dealerships are, in many cases, little more than large bumper bars. Fabricated of thin metal sheet, the mounting points on the front of the chassis do little more than position the bar and prevent it from falling to the ground. When subjected to an impact, the ‘bar may deform into the vehicle bodywork, preventing the vehicle from continuing its journey rather than providing tangible protection. A workable solution for country travel, especially at night and in areas away from major population centres, requires a different approach to vehicle and occupant safety. Delivery’s preferences are based on vehicle application, and concern the hazards likely to be encountered during on-road driving in extreme or remote areas. As an alternative to steel or alloy bullbars, a sensible frontal protection option for vehicle owners facing the risk of animal strike each evening is provided by SmartBar Australia. SmartBar was established in 1996 when its then-parent company, Team Poly, had a fleet of 39 water tank delivery trucks across Australia that were constantly being damaged by animal strikes. After the company added a SmartBar to each vehicle in the fleet, truck immobilisation from animal strikes became a rarity and vehicle repair costs were significantly reduced. 54

The company is now owned by 4WD accessory specialist ARB and retains its lead in the provision of Vehicle Frontal Protection Systems (VFPS) for light-commercial vehicles, particularly in government, mining and emergency service sectors. Unlike the wide range of steel or alloy bullbars, the SmartBar is made from an advanced polymer material which allows it to absorb an impact by temporarily deforming and then returning to its original profile. Its tested-and-proven safety rating has made the StealthBar the first VFPS that complies with the European Regulation for Pedestrian Safety and meets full Australian Standard AS 4876.1-2002 (including Clause 3.2, Road User Protection).


BULLBARS

The SmartBar is lighter than a corresponding steel bar, reducing the influence on suspension and steering systems that results in the need for extra wheel alignment and wheel balance maintenance. When adding any additional frontal protection, driving lamps or winches, it’s important to confirm that the total weight after fitment is less than the rated maximum front axle loading. The weight also needs to be included in the calculation for determining the maximum payload or towing limit. There are SmartBar designs available for the majority of utes sold in the Australian market, plus vans such as those from Mercedes-Benz where SmartBar plays an important role in protecting Sprinters operating in the ambulance and police services.

“The one-piece UV-treated bar can absorb an impact, compressing up to 85 per cent of its width upon impact and returning to 95 per cent of its original shape within minutes,” said Adam Hixon, SmartBar’s Business Development Manager. “You’re not transferring force into the vehicle, so it pops back into shape and doesn’t leave you on the side of the road. The weight is about half that of a steel bar, and it’s also airbag compatible”. Those who live and work in remote rural areas often need to explain to those that have not experienced night driving in a conventional, unprotected vehicle, that a ‘roo strike on a highway or dirt road at night is neither unusual, nor always avoidable. It is however, a sufficient impact to potentially damage a vehicle to the point where it is undriveable. DELIVERY ISSUE 82

When faced with an animal appearing on the road, never swerve to avoid an impact, as a sudden steering input can induce instability that can take the vehicle into a rollover situation. Brake firmly to minimise the impact. Of course, reducing your speed where you see wildlife near the road is sensible and advisable, but also prepare for the unexpected. When driving into remote areas, Delivery suggests taking a close look at what locals buy to protect their vehicles. Our enquiries amongst local farmers and cattle producers reveals that, “Tuff Bullbars are the only ones capable of withstanding an accidental animal strike at high speed, while protecting the vehicle and the occupants. Based in Toowoomba, Tuff Bullbars is a privately-owned company that was founded 25 years ago. Fully compliant with Australian Design Rules and Australian Standards requirements, Tuff Bullbars has notched an impressive sales record of more than 30,000 units sold either domestically or internationally. The product range includes three-post, four-post and five-post designs, with tubing dimensions of 50 mm, 60 mm or 76 mm, dependent on the vehicle and application. Powder-coated with a primer and finish coat on steel construction, there’s also a choice of polished aluminium bars that reduce concern about excess weight over the front axle. Material thickness used in steel bars is of 3 mm plate, while alloy bars are fabricated from 8 mm thick plate.


BULLBARS

Not surprisingly, the five-post design is expected to withstand extreme animal strikes; the four-post provides comprehensive protection in remote or rural areas; the three-post is probably the next step up from vehicle manufacturer bars; and the Aerostyle is more for those living on the edge of town, together with a nudge bar option. The Tuff Bullbar range is aimed at providing protection for on-highway or dirt road driving, and this added frontal protection extends right across the front and lower section of the fabrication. The design will not assist in challenging

off-road terrain, however, where the angle of approach and departure is critical. For this application, you need to consider a design that provides the necessary front approach angle clearance. For these applications, both ARB and Tuff have a range of specialist options. The strength for which Tuff Bullbars are renowned also comes from the fitment of twin pipe brush rails that connect through from the front bar to steel sidesteps mounted off the chassis. FUSO – READY Warren Caves finds that Fuso is geared up to start work with pre-bodied options

uso plans to help customers to “hit the ground running “with its Built Ready range of pre-bodied trucks, centred around its hard-working Canter and larger Fighter models.

As dependable as a pair of old boots, Fuso’s Canter range has been a common sight on Australian roads since the early 1980s. The company plans to make new truck purchases a lot easier with a selected range of trucks wearing the Canter and Fighter badges, available for immediate delivery complete with work-ready bodies. “Fuso wants to make it easier for our customers to do business, so we have developed the Built Ready range that covers a wide range of applications, “Fuso Director Justin Whitford said.

“We know that our customers would rather be out there getting the job done, rather than waiting for a body to be built up”. At the invitation of Fuso Trucks, Delivery attended an introduction and drive day in Canberra to view and test drive the available range of Built Ready options. Delivery’s focus starts at the lighter end of the weight segment with the Canter range, deferring the in-depth analysis of the larger Fighter models to its sister magazine PowerTorque. The Canter range includes five body- and two cab-width variants for multiple applications. Two tipper-bodied trucks are included in the Built Ready range - the 615 City Cab and the 815 Wide Cab.


FUSO CANTER

TO WORK The 615 City Cab Tipper, as the name suggests, features a narrow cab and tipper body for tight site access and would ideally suit small landscape operators or council park and garden types of work. It features a two cubic-metre capacity tray. The 615 tipper is the only Japanese tipper model to come with an integrated strengthened box-chassis section to support the tipper and mechanism rather than a separate sub-frame. This construction technique reduces weight and subsequently gives the little 615 a GVM of 6 tonnes, an increase in payload of an additional 500 kg. All Canter models can be downgraded to 4.5 tonnes GVM to allow the trucks to be driven on a standard car licence.

The 615 city-friendly tipper is fitted with the 4P10 3.0-litre, four-cylinder engine with 147 hp (110 kW) of power and 370 Nm of torque and is available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed Duonic automated transmission. A limited slip differential is standard equipment for both tipper variants, and reversing cameras are standard across the range.

The larger 815 Wide Cab tipper has recently received a range of engineering upgrades to enable its GVM to be increased to 7.5 tonnes, with the GCM also increasing to a useful 11 tonnes, up from the previous 10 tonnes GCM. By increasing the length of the body to 3150mm, a cubic capacity increase over previous models of 14 percent has been achieved, giving a 2.4 cubic metre capacity, further boosting productivity. It’s available with a five-speed manual transmission or Fuso’s quick-shifting Duonic, automated DCT. Both the Canter Built Ready tipper models are fitted with their respective bodies direct from the factory in Japan and come complete with a Fuso manufacturer’s warranty of five-years or 200,000 km, whichever comes first. The remainder of the Built-Ready range is fitted with bodies manufactured by specifically selected Australian body builders.

The 515 Canter is available with three body choices to suit popular applications. All feature the 4P10 four-cylinder engine and the driveline runs on a standard suspension design of front independent double wishbone with coil spring and rear parabolic leaf springs. For the cool kids, there is the refrigerated 515 Canter City Cab. This fridge/ freezer v500 is Thermo-King equipped with a 240-volt plug-in option for stand-by, and is capable of operating down to minus-20 degrees Celsius. The refrigerated bodies are manufactured with white styrene sandwich walls and roof, with non-slip fibreglass over a 17mm CD ply floor. Internal LED lighting, grab handles and foldout steps keep the workplace bright, safe and functional, while cold air curtains on the side and rear doors maintain product delivery temperatures when unloading.

Needing only a standard car licence, the 515 Canter Wide Cab with alloy tray is heavily targeted toward the tradie sector. Features include a four-tonne rated floor, two-piece drop-sides, 65mm removeable ladder racks with load pins and 40mm rope rails with integrated front step. The 515 alloy tray Canter is available with a fivespeed manual transmission or the six-speed Duonic automated transmission. The Canter Wide Cab alloy tray model tested was the five-speed manual version which performed well, and I particularly like the dash-mounted gear shift positioning, although the gear changes seemed a bit notchy if rushed. The wheelbase is 3400mm and the little truck had an amazing turning circle provided by the rack-and-pinion steering configuration. In Pantech guise, the Built- Ready range includes the 515Wide Cab Canter. This comes with the six-speed Duonic automated manual transmission and is fitted with a 4319mm-

long, 2205mm-wide by 2135mm-tall body of 20mm thick fibreglass-reinforced walls, an aluminium roof and internal tie-down rails. The floor is 3 mm chequer plate and at the rear sits a 600 kg Dhollhandia tuck-away tailgate loader. The 515 Pantech is clearly aimed at rental fleets, with a spec that excludes a manual transmission option, standardising on the Duonic automated manual and with ratings nudging 4500kg GVM, plus the obvious attraction of car licence compatibility. All Canter models tested come standard with a touchscreen multimedia system that includes satellite navigation with three-years of free map upgrades. The multimedia screen also gives a clear view of the reversing path, a feature particularly handy for rental fleets. Dual airbags are also included.


FUSO CANTER

The independent front suspension fitted to the Canter (with the exception of the tippers) provided good road feel and increased comfort over traditional leaf spring systems. More and more I am finding myself advocating the use of fully automatic fluid transmissions, or AMT (perhaps I’m just getting lazy in my old age), and in the main I guess it depends on the work being carried out. With the target market of the Fuso Built-Ready range most likely to be operated within city environs, I was pleased with the performance of the AMTs and the automatics, and these would be my choice. In the fast-paced transport game, contracts and opportunities can reveal themselves at any given moment, sometimes without much notice. This type of scenario may

drive the need to secure equipment rapidly or risk getting left behind. The Built Ready range from Fuso goes a long way to help with these situations, offering trucks of proven reliability fitted with work-ready bodies to cater for some of the commonly operated configurations in the small- to medium-duty market. Adding to the ease and speed of equipment purchase made available by the Built Ready range is the bumper-to-bumper manufacturer warranty included. Other advantages such as long 30,000km service intervals help to keep costs down. That meeting with the accountant alerting you to the fact that you’ve had a GOOD year, may make the idea of purchasing a new, work-ready truck highly appealing prior to the end of the financial year.
