I’m going to start by saying that I like Belgium. I like its people, I like the country, and I like its beer and chocolate. It may be small, and have little coastline, but I have enjoyed some great times on the boat within Belgium’s borders, and see it as far more than a convenient stopping point on the way to the Netherlands. It is a great destination in its own right. Having said that, the recent debacle over red diesel

up in court. You can read his story on page 8. We still haven’t even been given an explanation as to why this sudden change of heart as taken place. Any connection to the fact that the British government announced plans to ‘take back’ control of British waters, seriously affecting the Belgian fishing fleet, just before the fines started, may be purely coincidental. You can read the latest on the situation in our news pages, and by latest I mean the information as we received it today, if you are reading this on the day of publication, and their current stance seems to be of a more friendly and welcoming nature. The big question is, can we trust them? If they changed their stance once, without warning or has been nothing short of farcical. Despite explanation, who is to say they won’t previous reassurances that the Belgian do it again? It sounds like, at least for authorities ‘understood’ our situation with now, that a trip to Belgium is back on red diesel, they took it upon themselves, without warning, to start fining skippers for the cards, unfortunately the card game having traces of red diesel in their tanks. We in question is one of chance, so you have have spoken to one of the skippers fined, and his story is truly quite shocking. He was to ask yourself; effectively held to ransom without any actual do you feel lucky? Well do you? evidence, at least nothing that would stand

NEWS RNLI issues safety warning after 16 people were rescued when their 19ft boat capsized RNLI

Sixteen people were pulled from the water when their 19ft Boston Whaler capsized in South Pool Creek in the Salcombe Estuary in July. Salcombe’s RNLI inshore lifeboat, pictured, was tasked to rescue the crew of the boat after it capsized at around 8.40pm on Saturday 22 July while visiting the area. Three young children were among those who ended up in the water, with two of those under the age of one. Several were plucked from the water by local boats that were nearby at the time and the RNLI crew picked up five men who were clinging to the side of the upturned hull. Lifeboat Operations Manager Simon Evans said ‘The boat overturned in chest deep water in a fairly narrow creek. Fortunately all 16 people were rescued safely from the water. However, the outcome could have been very different had the boat been in deeper water. When the volunteer crew reached the men they had been in the water for quite some time, were cold and were not wearing lifejackets. There was twice the number of people on the boat than there should have been when it capsized and this could have easily ended in tragedy.’ Shocked, cold and tired, the casualties were taken back to the lifeboat station where they were provided with blankets and towels. The Salcombe Harbour Master’s launch towed the upturned hull into harbour. RNLI Area Lifesaving Manager, Simon Crayfourd, said ‘The RNLI recommends that when you use your tender and your boat, everyone wears a buoyancy aid or a lifejacket. Fatigue can kick in quickly and a lifejacket could save your life. It’s also important to carry a means of calling for help if you do end up in trouble.’ The RNLI released some shocking statistics, saying that around 190 people lose their lives along UK and Irish coasts each year, and around half the people who die at the coast never intend to get wet. It also warned of the dangers of cold water shock. Such important safety messages are focal points in the RNLI’s drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water. 6

New marina planned for Poole Harbour The developer, Atlas Partners, has submitted plans for a new marina development in Poole Harbour that could take over the site of Sydenhams Timber Yard above Poole Bridge. Situated on the Hamworthy side, the new development will offer 365 apartments and incorporate a marina. Ground floor retail and business spaces for cafes, shops, restaurants and galleries, plus pedestrian and cycle routes through the site, will be added to encourage visitors. Sydenhams Timber Yard has been operating on the 4-acre Hamworthy Wharf site, where it was founded, since 1874 and, now with branches throughout the UK and having ‘outgrown’ the site, it will be relocating to new premises elsewhere.

Fairline’s former inspirational leader dies

‘The Fairline story is, perhaps, inextricably linked to one man’ is a quote from ‘Fairline: Golden Moments that built a British icon’ book. Sam Newington, the son of Jack Newington who was co founder of Fairline, has passed away aged 82. A former fighter pilot, he joined the company in 1970 and remained at the helm for 27 years. The company grew from strength-to-strength with Sam presiding over important model launches, such as the 40 in 1977 and Turbo 36 in 1982. Sam’s background in the air force also had an influence on many model names during the 70’s and 80’s, Squadron, Phantom, Vixen and Mirage. As boaters, Sam and his wife Briony, also became intrinsically involved in design, overseeing development of models such as the Sunfury. NEWS Red diesel in Belgium update

In June, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) received the first report of a yacht being fined in Belgium for having traces of red diesel in its tank. Since then a group of three boats were each fined €500 in Nieuwpoort, and in Oostende, two yachts were fined €750 and another €500 in July. Motorboat Owner spoke to one of the yacht owners who received a €750 fine in Oostende. The couple, aboard their Southerly, were enroute to Holland and were boarded by three Belgian Customs officers while moored at the Royal North Sea Yacht Club. The couple said “it was shameful, the customs officers boarded with a card reader ready to go. They went through all the usual customs checks, before moving on to testing the yachts fuel”. The owner said “Customs tried to dip my tank with a test kit, but could not get their pipe around the swan neck in the filler. They then went to the engine and looked at the sight glass, which they deemed to be marked. It would have been a mix of red and white fuel, but it certainly did not look very red. The appearance was enough for them to state I would be fined.” When they tried to contest the fine, the officers took their passports and started walking away. “Held to ransom”, the couple had no choice but to relent and paid the fine. Upon returning to the UK the yacht owner sent an email of complaint to the Belgian authorities, which was copied to the RYA, Motorboat Owner and the owner’s local MP. With no actual test of the diesel carried out, the yacht owner said “I have been fined €750 for an offence I have not committed, and feel very unfairly treated.” The owner received the following reply, “According to the (Belgian) Royal Decree of June 28th 2015, article 54, 2, states clearly that liquid motor fuels present, sold or used to drive an explosion or combustion engine of private pleasure crafts cannot contain any denaturates nor markers, on inland waterways or Union waters. Our colleagues were conducting controls on compliance with this legislation, as they are allowed to according to their powers.” The RYA continues to gather reports of fines, using email address boating.abroad@rya.org.uk. As MBO was going to press, after advising its members ‘not to call into Belgian ports’, the Cruising Association (CA) issued the following update, saying a Belgian Ambassador to the UK had informed them that “Belgium will suspend fines for boats found to be carrying red diesel, until the issue has been discussed by the EU Committee on Excise Duty on September 18th”. The German boatbuilder, Fjord, has announced a new outboardpowered version of its 36 model. The 36 xpress will be powered by twin Mercury Verado 350hp outboard engines, giving a brisk top speed of 45 knots. Below decks, it has a double cabin with a toilet compartment with a shower. A versatile cockpit incorporates an outdoor galley under the boats T-top. Priced from ÂŁ160,000 ex engines, the 36 xpress will debut at the Southampton Boat Show in September.

Nimbus W9 NEW BOAT Swedish boat builder, Nimbus, has launched a new model, the Weekender 9. Known as the W9, it is a 9-metre (30ft) sportscruiser which will offer nimble performance with a stepped hull, a large social cockpit and cabin accommodation for two people. It can be fitted with inboard or outboard, namely a Volvo D3 or V8 petrol and up to 350hp outboard engine, giving up to 40 knots. The boat will be launched at the 2018 Düsseldorf boat show, Boot in January. The W9 is the launch model of the W series, which will also include an 8 and 11-metre model. Additionally, using the same 8, 9 and 11-metre hulls, Nimbus has created two more new model lines ‘T’ Tender which will be a walkaround-style boat and the ‘C’ Commuter which will be a different style of walkaround. These boats combine the design DNA of the historic DC (Day Cruiser), R series and also the recent 305 Drophead.

ATYC Rally 2017 This August Bank Holiday (26th-28th), between 50-100 motorboats are due to descend upon Beale Park on the River Thames for the annual ATYC Rally. The ATYC (Association of Thames Yacht Clubs) was founded by the three motorboat clubs on the River Thames in 1949 to foster closer relationships and subsequently, others have joined. The ATYC now represents over 40 motorboat clubs on the tidal and non-tidal Thames. It is affiliated to the RYA and represents its members in matters concerning the running of and any issues on the Thames. For this years event, rally organisers are planning an informal, ‘fun-filled’ and ‘social gathering of like-minded boaters’, with a BBQ and disco on the Saturday night, followed by a ‘light-hearted’ test of boating skills on the Sunday, plus some on-the-water fun and games for younger crew members in the afternoon. Beneteau ST35 NEW BOAT The French boat builder, Beneteau is to expand its Swift Trawler range with the announcement of a new model, the ST35. Replacing the popular ST34 in the range, it will follow a similar design and feature DNA as the latest ST30, with single shaftdrive power, namely a Cummins 425hp diesel engine, and a semi-displacement flared hull. Its interior will offer 4-6 berths, with a spacious and light wheelhouse featuring a U-shaped galley, side door, saloon sofa bed, and two cabins with a forward double master and bunk-bedded side cabin. The ST35 will be launched at the Southampton Boat Show in September, priced from €239,700.

NEWS New 24-hour moorings open on the Broads Herbert Woods

New moorings have recently opened at Boundary Farm, just past Thurne Mouth, on the Broads. The Boundary Farm moorings, previously 150 metres, were closed in 2015 due to unsuccessful negotiations of the lease with the landowner. Under a new agreement, the Broads Authority obtained 40 metres of moorings, which have now been developed and opened as a free 24hr Broads Authority mooring. Funding for the project came from the Broads Authority and ‘Love the Broads’ visitor giving scheme, with a generous donation of £1,692 from boat charter company, Herbert Woods. This is particularly good news for boaters on the Broads, as the Broadland Flood Defences had necessitated the removal of many 24-hour moorings. Fittingly, a Herbert Woods hireboat was the first to be moored at the new site for the launch in July. Amanda Walker representing Herbert Woods said, “We are really excited to see the new moorings, we are sure they’ll be incredibly popular with our boat users”.

Wet Wheels Pedalo Challenge 2017

On Friday 11th August, 52 people are due to take to the water in a record attempt to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight in a pedalo, to help raise money for the charity, Wet Wheels. The Great Pedalo Challenge 2017 will see one pedalo cover 65 miles in 14 hours. The charity is looking to recruit fourteen teams of four people to take part in 1-hour relays, with each team hoping to raise £1,000. The Wetwheels Foundation provides disabled people access to the sea and now has five purpose-built, fully accessible Cheetah Marine catamarans, powered by twin Suzuki outboards, based in the Solent, east coast and Channel Islands. In raising money, the charity hopes to achieve its goal of launching two new boats in new communities in the future.

Jeanneau at 60 1957-2017 This year, the French builder, Jeanneau will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. The company was founded in 1957 and, as part of the celebrations, it has invited owners to take part by submitting images of their life onboard their Jeanneau motorboats via this link. Parker Monaco 110 NEW BOAT

The Polish motorboat and RIB builder, Parker has announced an all-new flagship model designed by architect, Tony Castro. The 10-metre, 33ft Monaco 110 is the first of a new series of outboard-powered cruisers from the builder. The interior will offer 4-6 berths with two cabins and a toilet compartment with separate shower stall. In the saloon is a large seating area with a galley, which is accessible from the cockpit. Outside, the design incorporates a deck bulwark door, a helm side door and a novel sunbed that covers the twin outboards. This aft seat-cum-sunbed slides aft increasing the cockpit area, and forward when you need to tilt the engines up. The boat will also have a glass sliding roof in the saloon area and a sliding canvas skylight over the cockpit. It will be available with twin 150hp or 300hp outboards. It is due to launch at Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

Red diesel fines in Belgium I’ve heard from some friends who are cruising in Holland that Belgium is still imposing fines on boats with red diesel in their tanks. I wondered what your views are on this and will it change when we leave Europe? I thought if you could prove you bought it in the UK you were OK. Also, can they board and fine you if you are just in Belgium waters? Chris Dawson Editor replies: Thank you for writing in. Yes, sadly what you have heard is correct. Last month the RYA reported a fine imposed on a British yacht in Nieuwpoort, and we have since heard of a few more. One of our friends was one of those hit with a €750 fine. We have spent many happy times cruising in Belgium, on the coast and inland to places such as Bruges, but traces of red diesel will stay in your tanks for a long time, so Belgium, and its waters, are best avoided for now. Whether this will change when we leave the EU is anybody’s guess. I have heard stories, although not documented, of non-EU vessels being fined in the EU for having red diesel in their tanks, so possibly not.

Fixing a GPS antenna

I was interested to see your article on ‘Fixing your GPS Antenna’, I did exactly that on a Raystar 120 just a few weeks ago. I note that you suggested cutting away the old battery, unsoldering the old tabs, and modifying the tags on the new battery so that they would fit. Without the right tools and a bit of experience working on printed circuits, there is a risk of damage doing it this way. Too much heat from the soldering iron can damage the components on the board. It is much easier, and less risky, to solder a couple of wires to the tags on the new battery, and the size and orientation of the battery tags does not matter. The wires can be very thin and flexible since any current flow is tiny. I used a couple of cores from a telephone cable about 10cm long. You then need to insulate the package. I used a short length of heat shrink sleeving which I had lying around, but a wrapping of insulating tape would do. Then all that remains is to solder the two wires to the remains of the tabs where you have cut the old battery away, making sure you get the polarity right. There is plenty of room to tuck the new battery inside the case. T

hink of centre console, walkaround boats and there are a few iconic brands that will spring to mind, Boston Whaler being perhaps the obvious one. However, there are plenty of other brands out there providing a similar package, often at more affordable prices. Wellcraft, is perhaps not

a name you would immediately think of, possible because the brand has been absent from our shores for a few years, but they are back, and if the Wellcraft name itself is not iconic enough for you, how about combining it with Scarab? The Scarab name is a Wellcraft brand, known largely to us in the UK, thanks to the 1980’s TV show, Miami Vice. Scarab branded boats were mostly large powerful offshore performance boats, some of which have a passing resemblance to what

we would call a centre console walkaround boat, albeit one on steroids. Wellcraft now produce some small performance runabouts under the Scarab name, but also give the name to some of its new brand of modest centre console boats. The boat we are looking at here is one of a five-boat Fisherman range, starting with the 182 and going up to the 302. In between, you have the 222, the 242 and the 262. which apart from coming in slightly heavier, appear to be more about graphics and styling than anything else. The 242 is, as the name suggests, designed as a fishing boat. If that is your thing, then the boat has plenty of features that are sure to tick your boxes. For a start there are more rod holders than you can shake a stick at, with four on the transom, another four behind the helm seat, a further four high up on the aft end of the T top, and six more in the console,

with three either side. The 242 also has a fish box with overboard drain, a livebait well on both sides of the transom and rod storage built into the coaming on both sides of the cockpit. Having said that, the 242 isn’t just a fishing boat, it also has some great features that would make it a really useful dayboat for cruising and watersports. That fish box, for example, could just as easily be filled with ice and turned into a coolbox for drinks and food, so let’s have a closer look at this boat’s features. In the bow you get some good seating options. The benches on either side have a backrest at the bow to provide two great aft facing loungers. The aft end of these seats can have removable backrests installed to turn them into forward facing loungers, if you prefer to see where you are going. The seats themselves house a good sized, self-draining locker each, and the whole area can be in-filled to create a nice sunpad area. You can also add a table up here to form a useful dinette. In between these seats at the bow there is a small draining locker, the lid of which forms a

step to access the boat over the bow, where you will find a pretty large anchor locker and an optional electric anchor winch. Moving aft, and to the front of the centre console, you have a forward facing seat with grabrails on either side. This whole section, seat and all, lifts up to reveal what Wellcraft call a changing room. In here you can opt for a toilet, either portable or plumbed in with holding tank, and with the door shut you do just about get enough room to make use of it. The large door to this compartment doesn’t open if you have the aft backrests of the bow seating in place, and care needs to be taken not to leave

it open, as the fibreglass edges sit just at head height for anyone walking around the deck. Having said that, a feature such as this is a fantastic bonus on what is essentially a day boat, and is a creature comfort that might make the difference between staying out on the water and heading for shore. Above the console is a hallmark feature that defines this style of boat, the T top. Despite its importance to the design, look and usability of the boat, this is not standard, and you can specify a 242 without it. There are a couple of different options here, but our test boat had a metal frame with GRP top, which incorporated a useful overhead locker, accessible from fore and aft, some overhead lights and a pair of speakers. The helm console itself is nicely laid out with plenty of space for electronics, a couple of drinks holders and a pair of charging points for your portable equipment. The windscreen is a single piece of clear plastic, which is curved to form two side pieces. This curvature does provide a distorted view forward if you need to look over the port or starboard bow, but it’s no big deal to shift your head Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd

to one side or the other for a better view. The helm position is made up of a non-adjustable leaning post, and the steering wheel is a sturdy stainless steel model with built in steering knob for comfortable one handed helming. The bottom cushion of the leaning post lifts, and underneath there is a small locker for ropes or other bits and bobs. Below the seat the boat comes, as standard, with a removable cool box.

On the transom you get a seat for two, which folds flat if you need a clear cockpit for fishing and lifts up to give access to the aft bilge area. A small transom gate leads out to the bathing platform where you will find a bathing ladder on the port side. Unusually for an outboard powered boat, the bathing platform is full width and usable across the width, even with the engine fully tilted.

without the prop ventilating. This was almost certainly a rigging issue on our test boat, but it meant that, during our test, it delivered quite a wet ride as the bow stuffed into the back of each wave. At slow speeds the flared bow kicked up quite a bit of water in the choppy seas. The wind then carried this onboard, again making a wet ride if the wind is in the wrong direction, but bring the boat up on the plane and drive into or across the waves and everything settled nicely, and that same flared bow does a great job of pushing water away from the occupants. The boat was easy to drive, and felt completely ‘in the zone’ at anything from 20-30 knots. Take her above 30 though and the fun begins, as the 242 turns into a real sportsboat that the helmsman needs to actively drive. places for your crew when underway. Conclusion This centre console boat is clearly designed for fishing, but we think it would make a great family boat too. It’s easy to drive at modest speeds, but can also deliver the engaging lively drive of a sportsboat, should you feel the need to go for a blast. It’s nicely appointed too, with a toilet compartment/cum changing room, lots of storage and plenty of comfortable seating options. The Scarab branding certainly adds to the overall look, and is available in three colour schemes, but if that is not for you then the standard boat comes with a choice of six conservative hull side colours. Pilgrim 25

Q In my search for an affordable family cruiser

I have stumbled upon a Pilgrim 25 being sold privately. The seller tells me the boat is actually a Princess, and is identical to the later Princess 25. They do look very similar, so is the seller correct?

Princess 25, built 1974-1981

A In short, yes and no. Princess boats, as we now know them, started

production in the late 60’s with boat models that were called either Project, as in the Project 31, or Pilgrim, like your 25. There was some crossover with the Princess name around 1970 when they launched the Princess 32. The Pilgrim and Project names were dropped completely by the mid 70’s, and all boats from 1975 on were called Princess. The Pilgrim 25 ceased production in 1974 and was immediately superseded by the Princess 25. The boats look very similar, but in fact have two different hulls, designed by different people, with the Princess 25 being one of John Bennett’s first designs for the Plymouth based builder. So, the Pilgrim is effectively a Princess, but it is not identical to the Princess 25.

Adding a water tank gauge

Q I want to add a level gauge to my boat’s plastic fresh water tank so I have some idea how much water we have. What’s the cheapest and easiest way of doing this?

A This was another upgrade I carried out on my

Bayliner, on both the fresh water and holding tanks. I used a simple level sender, the type that has a float that runs up and down a straight shaft coupled with a basic water level gauge from the likes of Faria. Everything I used is still available from ASAP supplies. What is important is to get a sender with a shaft that is as near to the full depth of your tank as you can get, without being longer, and to make sure that you match the gauge and sender for either US or Euro resistance. It really is a very simple job, especially if your wire route is easily accessible, and you should be able to complete the job for under £100. 26

30ft low air draft aft cabin

Q Having enjoyed a Freeman 22 for several

years, I’m looking for another boat. I wondered if there was a boat that meets the following criteria, a maximum length of 30ft, a maximum air draft of 7ft 6in (must fit under Osney bridge on the River Thames), an inboard engine, an aft cabin, preferably with access to both sides of the bed and preferably with ensuite toilet with a shower cubicle. It would have to be cheap, so possibly many years old. It would only be for river use, so a powerful engine is not a requirement.

A We would suggest looking out for centre cockpit boats with folding screens

such as the rare Storebro 31 Baltic (non hardtop), Fairline Mirage 29 aft cabin (soft top or removable hardtop version) or slightly bigger the Freeman 32. Perhaps also the Fjord Selcruiser 27, Elysian 27 Centre Cockpit, Broom 30 Skipper, RLM aft cabin models and the Ocean 30. Unfortunately you will struggle to find an aft cabin boat of this size with an island double. Centre cockpit, sliding-roof ex-hire boats might also be a consideration. These boats may be basically appointed, but the engines are usually very well maintained and it could be an opportunity to put your stamp on a boat. Alternatively, if you were looking for something relatively new on a larger budget, the Dutch Antaris range may be of interest, particularly its aft cabin 950 model which is 31ft and low air draft. As well as River Thames brokers, it is worth keeping an eye on websites such as Jones Boatyard, Norfolk Yacht Agency, Norfolk Boat Sales, Newark Marina and Farndon Marina, as low air draft boats are extremely popular and a requirement for cruising in these areas.

First cross-Channel forey

Q I am looking to make my first foreign foray

with a cross Channel passage to France from my East coast base. I’ve been across the Thames estuary a few times so am familiar with the navigation of this part of the passage but beyond Ramsgate is all unknown. I am thinking of heading to Dover and then crossing to Calais for the shortest crossing. My boat is a Sealine F43. Any tips, or anything I need to be aware of?

A The first tip is to ensure that you have your paperwork in order. Passports for

all crew and the boat’s original registration (SSR or Part 1) document are perhaps the most important. Other paperwork to consider are insurance documents, radio licenses and VAT proof. The latter should not be required, but if you have it, it is always worth taking. You don’t require any certificate of competence, but again, if you have an ICC, it is worth carrying. Next you need to consider the shipping lanes. Cross them with a heading of 90° to the traffic, not a COG. This typically means a heading of 135°T between Dover and Calais and 315°T on the return journey. Now I am going to suggest something different. Rather than start at Dover, which is a very busy port and currently undergoing lots of work around the marina area, why not start in Ramsgate. It will make the journey a bit longer, but you definitely have the boat for it. I would also suggest considering a change of destination. Calais is another very busy commercial port, and I haven’t always had the warmest of welcomes as a leisure boater. Why not do a few more extra miles and head for Boulogne. This is an all tides port with a much easier entrance. I also think that the town is more interesting, especially if you make the effort to walk to the old walled part. Dover

Mystery boat

Q I recently took ownership of a motor cruiser as a long term project but I

have been trying to get some information on the makers and any schematics. Do you have any idea what the boat is?

A We have identified your new project as a Tod Tuna. Unfortunately we

have checked our archives and have found very little information on the boat. However, we understand it is a 20ft GRP open cockpit boat that was built between 1954-1970 by W&J Tod of Weymouth. It appears that they were offered with an array of engine configurations, petrol or diesel single or twin inboards or sterndrives, or single or twin outboards. The most common being twin petrol 30hp-50hp Watermota engines giving up to 22 knots, with petrol 60hp Volvos offered later giving 28 knots. It has a shallow vee hull shape with two small bilge keels. We have also discovered that examples were entered into the CowesTorquay races during the 1960’s and one was used as an Essex Police patrol boat, pictured. Its interior offers two berths, a toilet and a small galley. Interestingly W&J Tod of Weymouth appears to be one of several pioneers in the world of GRP in the UK. According to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, the builder manufactured ‘the first British fibreglass sailing dinghy’ in 1950. Q I have been offered a little jet RIB for a good price

but need to find out more about it before committing. The seller tells me it’s a Sealine. Did Sealine produce jet RIBs and, if so, do you have any more info, particularly size, weight and performance.

A Sealine did market a jet RIB back in 2002. It was

launched at the London Boat Show that year, and was called the SX70 (brochure image pictured). It was 3.26m long with a beam of 1.76m, and its brochure weight was stated as 250kg, although a full 42-litre fuel tank would add another 34kg or so to this. It was powered by a 70hp two-stroke 3-cylinder engine, which was said to provide a top speed of 35 knots. The price when new was a little over £11,000.

Aft cockpit cruiser for £80k

Q I’m looking to buy my first motorboat in the next year or so and will be

converting from sail to power. I have a budget of up to £80k and will be looking for a semi displacement, coastal cruiser with a relatively low air draft for inland cruising, potentially for crossing the Channel to explore European waterways. Ideally I would like an enclosed wheelhouse, shaftdrive diesel power, four berths in the region of 28ft. Do you have any suggestions what I should look at? Also is there anywhere I could charter a boat of this style to get some experience?

A We would recommend looking at the Swedish manufacturer, Nimbus

pictured, as we have found these are particularly popular with those moving from sail to power. They are good quality, are fitted with twin or single shaftdrive engines and offer practical and versatile interiors. Nimbus have produced several aft cockpit ‘Coupe’ models meeting your size and used boat price criteria, such as the 280, or the larger 310 or 320. Boats such as the Nelson 29, Hardy 32 Commander and Aquastar Ocean Ranger 33 might also be suitable, these are rugged, extremely versatile and very capable cruisers. Putting the budget to one side for a second, the Trusty 28 is an impressive wheelhouse cruiser offering two cabins with an island double in the forward cabin and semi displacement cruising. Regarding chartering motorboats, the British Boat Builder, Broom Boats has a very nice range of modern charter boats available on the Broads. Doing a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) boat handling course is another way to experience this type of boating. The RYA has schools throughout the country and many of these have sea school motorboats of various shapes and sizes.

Steeped in maritime history, this picturesque harbour in South Devon is awe-inspiring, and with great facilities, shelter, attractions and plentiful mooring opportunities, it is a must visit. The town of Dartmouth was established in the Middle Ages, and its deep-water

harbour saw it grow in importance through trade, namely the export of Totnes cloth, the import of wines from overseas, and as a military port. However, when Plymouth was instated as the preferred military port in Devon, Dartmouth was to receive a significant consolation prize in the form of the imposing, red-bricked Britannia Royal

Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority operate several visitor mooring sites in the harbour, each offering different facilities and vistas of the harbour, some with access to shore. Full details of these can be found on the Dart Harbour website. Charges range from 85p-£2.30 per metre per day, plus harbour dues of 85p per metre per day. If you intend to stay on one of the Dart Harbour pontoons you will need to contact the friendly harbour team, using callsign ‘Dart Nav’ on VHF ch 11 on arrival, or call the Harbour Office on 01803 832337/833767. Possibly the most remote and peaceful moorings are the Deep Water Visitor’s Moorings located on the Kingswear side of the channel. Despite having no walk ashore access, water or shorepower, we think these sets of pontoons (110 metres with plentiful cleats) are a great place to admire the spectacle that is Dartmouth. Plus, with an efficient water taxi service and many dinghy landing points, it is easy enough to get ashore. The nearby refuse pontoon now has a water point and here, visitors can temporarily moor up to wash off salty decks and top up their tanks. Other options are the DA and DC Pontoons on the Dartmouth side of the river, which cater for boats up to 12 metres. Again, these do not have shore access, so you will need a tender or taxi

to get ashore. Please note the residential pontoons on the inside are gated to shore, so landing here by tender is not advisable. If you are looking for access to electric and water, there are a limited number of 24hr berths available on the inside of the busy Town Jetty, which offers direct walk ashore access to the town embankment. It is also worth noting that the outside of this jetty, which is used by commercial boats during the day, is available for overnight stays, strictly between 5pm and 8:45am, so this could be handy if you arrive late at night. Destination available on the outside during the winter. Finally, there is the Yacht Club Pontoon just upstream of the Lower Ferry on the South Embankment. This small, seasonal (May-Sept) walk-ashore, T-shaped pontoon offers up to three berths for boats up to 9 metres and is conveniently positioned in front of the Harbour Office and the Dartmouth Yacht Club, with its bar, restaurant and coded toilet/shower facilities (£1-operated showers). If you are staying on the Dart Harbour pontoons you have two options when it comes to toilet and shower facilities, the facilities at the Dartmouth Yacht Club mentioned above (an access code is available at the Harbour Office) or the public toilets in Royal Avenue Gardens, which has a separate £1-on-entry toilet and shower block at the back. If you are looking for the comfort of a marina berth then there are three options, Darthaven Marina, Dart Marina Yacht Harbour and Noss on Dart Marina. The first marina on your approach is the family-run 270-berth Darthaven Marina on the Kingswear side. The marina is tucked just inside the Kingswear peninsula, next to the Dartmouth Steam Railway and the pretty Waterhead Creek. Accommodating up to 40 boats, its visitors’ pontoons are to the south of the main marina and arranged in a H shape. Visitors should call up on VHF ch 80 for a mooring or call 01803 752242. Please note berths are available on a first come first served basis. Visitor berthing is charged at £3.35 per metre per night including harbour dues. It also has a chandlery and extensive boatyard services available. The 110-berth Dart Marina Yacht Harbour can be found on the Dartmouth side just upstream of the Higher Ferry. Located in the grounds of the luxury Dart Marina Hotel and Spa, it has all the ingredients for an indulgent stay in Dartmouth. The marina is accessible at all states of tide and is approximately a 10-minute walk along the waterfront to town. Visitors’ berths are subject to berth availability, so we would recommend booking in advance (01803 837161 or VHF ch 80). There is shorepower, WiFi and water on the pontoons and, in addition to the toilet and shower facilities ashore, there are bathrooms with full

Destination size bathtubs inside. Visitors can book into the hotel spa and restaurant, and overnight berths are charged at £3.85 per metre per night (including harbour dues). Transeurope marina berth holders will get a 50% discount off their mooring fee. Tucked into the leafy eastern bank, the next marina upstream is the secluded Noss-on-Dart Marina. This former shipbuilders yard was recently acquired by the marina group, Premier Marinas, and works are currently underway to revitalise the site and create additional berths. It offers a tranquil setting, with picnic tables along the foreshore and good facilities. Dartmouth is still within reach by tender and there are also plans to provide a ferry service into town. Here visiting boats between 8m-12.5 metres are charged £3.10 and 12.6-16m £3.30 per metre per day. Further up the Dart you have Dittisham, Stoke Gabriel and Totnes to discover. At Dittisham the Dart Harbour authority is responsible for 30 white visitors buoys, each marked with a V. These are accessible at all states of tide and each one is marked with an appropriate boat size. Here there is a landing stage next to The Ferry Boat Inn and Anchorstone Café. Next you have Stoke Gabriel with The Castle Inn, Rivershack Café and landing stage. Here there are two buoys suitable for boats up to 9 metres. It is possible to visit Totnes

Dartmouth has a mid-river fuel barge (above) offering petrol and diesel and run by Yeowards Marine Fuels. The barge is contactable on VHF Channel 6 or by telephone 07801 798861, and is open from Easter to 30th Sept, 7 days a week, 8am-6pm, and Mon/ Wed/Fri/Sat 12-5pm 1st Oct to Easter. It operates from both sides with two petrol and diesel pumps, with a faster diesel pump for larger quantities.

on a half flood tide, and dry out overnight against the quay walls each side. Here you will find the picturesque waterside pub the Steam Packet Inn, which has berthing by arrangement for patrons. When it comes to getting ashore by tender in Dartmouth, there are several dinghy-landing pontoons to choose from. The most popular is the short stay pontoon known as the ‘Double Steps’ (6hr

stay), or the water taxi point, which you will find just north of the ferry terminal. There is another, quieter, landing further north along the embankment, known as the Green Pontoons (12hr stay). Be aware that this dries out over low water. On the Kingswear side there is a small section of pontoon for short stays on the residents’ dinghy rack pontoon, located next to the Dart Harbour Hoodown

Facility (workshop). There is also a short stay dinghy pontoon and taxi landing at Darthaven Marina on the inside of the innermost pontoon in the visitors’ area. Anchoring is permitted in a designated area of the harbour off the Kingswear side. We would recommend contacting the Harbour Master on VHF ch 11 ‘Dart Nav’ for further instructions on this. If you are thinking of visiting with a trailboat, unfortunately Dartmouth is quite restricted when it comes to public launching sites and trailer storage facilities. We would recommend contacting one of the marinas for launching and storage opportunities, or calling the Dart Harbour Office for information. Dart Harbour is responsible for the narrow public slipway on the south side of the Higher Ferry ramp and there is local council-run trailer parking in the Coronation Park, for trailers up to 15ft from the 1st of May. There are more launching and trailer storage options up at tidal Totnes, at Blackness Marine (01803 722654) and Baltic Wharf (01803 867922). There are also small slipways at Dittisham, Stoke Gabriel and Greenway Quay.

Where to eat and drink Dartmouth has a reputation for good

The Dart Harbour Taxi service can be hailed on VHF channel 69 or 07970 346571. For security reasons, taxis will not pick up or drop off passengers on to boats in marinas. It is a 40-minute bus ride to Totnes on the x64 from bus stop ‘Pontoon’, which is next to the North Embankment Ferry Terminal. Totnes train station offers Great Western services to Penzance, Plymouth, Taunton, Bristol and London Paddington.

Food supplies

You will find a convenient Coop food store one road back from South Embankment, in Fairfax Place (open from 7am-10pm and has a convenient ATM inside). There is a larger M&S Food Hall located in Mayor’s Avenue, just north of the public car park (open 8am-8pm Mon-Sat and 10am-4pm Sun). There is a McColls newsagent close to the North Embankment Ferry Terminal (overlooking the Boat Float), which sells some basic food essentials. If you are looking for local produce head to Duke Street, where you will find two bakeries, a butcher and deli. Fresh fish is available from Mark Lobb in the Market Square, Moby Nick’s in Fairfax Place or the Crab Shell in Raleigh Street. There is a Spar shop (also a Bureau du Change & Post Office) in Victoria Road. If you are looking for a big shop, catch the X64 bus towards Totnes, and at Townstal there are large Sainsbury’s and Lidl supermarket (7-minute ride).

If you are looking for breakfast ashore Café Alf Resco is popular. It is open 7am-2pm daily, serving up a full English, pastries, coffee and crab sandwiches. If you love a pub with a bit of character, The Cherub Inn in Higher Road dates back to 1830. It is actually one of the oldest buildings in Dartmouth and was visited by Sir Francis Drake. This timberclad inn is tucked away up the Horn Hill Steps and serves bar food and local ales. The Floating Bridge, close to Dart Marina, is a favourite, serving breakfast and many pub classics. If you are craving an Indian there is the Taj Mahal on Horn Hill Steps. Dartmouth Yacht Club is a good place to start an evening, enjoy a lunch or evening meal. It is open from 11am11pm Mon-Sat and Midday-10pm on Sunday when it serves a carvery. On the Kingswear side, the Royal Dart Yacht Club also welcomes visiting boaters, serves food and caters for rallies. There are countless opportunities to enjoy a Devonshire Cream Tea. Tucked away in Smith Street, the Singing Kettle offers a ‘cuppa’ in a traditional setting with proper china crockery. Finally, if you are looking for food on the go, we can highly recommend a hot pasty or a naughty cake from the bakery in the Buttermilk.

Places to visit

You’ll get a real glimpse into the harbour’s past by walking past the Lower Ferry to Bayards Cove. Here the picturesque medieval, cobbled quayside has many stories to tell with its bronze cannons,

the Old Custom House built in 1739 and Bayards Fort dating back to Tudor times. Visiting Dartmouth Castle and its surroundings is a must. It has guarded the narrow entrance to the River Dart for over 600 years and has a tall gun tower, church and a Victorian gun battery topped with a white-painted castellated tower. It is said, in times of war and sea battles, a chain stretched across the estuary from the castle, to trap any unwanted visitors. The castle is run by English Heritage and is open daily from 10am-6pm daily from April to September. Entry is £6.60 for adults and £4 for children. You’ll find a lovely gift shop and the Castle Tea Rooms on site. Closeby there are two picturesque coves to discover, Castle Cove and Sugary Cove. You can also join the South West Coast Path, and there are a number of circular walks that start from this point. Even the walk out to the castle itself, passing Warfleet Creek, is pretty special. It takes approximately 25 minutes (1.2 Miles) from town, following the Newcomen Road and Castle Road. Alternatively you can catch the traditional, open Castle Ferry from the steps on the South Embankment. It is £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for under 14’s one way for the 15-minute ride. The ferry runs daily from

Destination Dartmouth between 10am-4:45pm, from Easter until the end of October. Dartmouth has plenty of shops to keep the most discerning of shopaholics busy. Its main shopping streets, Fairfax Place and Duke Street have many of the well known nautical ‘boatiques’, such as Sea Salt, Joules and Henri Lloyd. Plus there are lovely gift, jewellery, antique and art and crafts stores, not forgetting fudge shops to tempt you. Visiting Foss Street is an absolute must. This pretty narrow shopping street is full of quirky and independent shops, and leads into Dartmouth’s Historic Market Square with its cafes, shops and stalls. If you have youngsters onboard, there is a fun-filled family day out to be had at nearby Woodlands Park. Here you’ll find zoo and farm animals, places to eat, playgrounds and lots of great rides to keep the kids (and big kids) amused. Entry prices vary throughout the season, so its best to check the website first. There are also 10% or 20% discounts available for bookings made online. The park is a 20-minute bus ride away, aboard the X64 towards Totnes, from the ‘Pontoon’ bus stop next to the Station restaurant and North Embankment Ferry Terminal. A ride aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway is a must. This nostalgic railway departs from the Kingswear side of the estuary and winds its way up the River Dart, passes Churston, Broadsands and

Goodrington Sands, before reaching the traditional seaside resort of Paignton, which is full of gift shops, arcades, a small harbour, a pier and of course a sandy beach. During the season the train runs up to nine times a day and you can buy combined ferry and railway tickets online or from the kiosk at the top of the ferry terminal ramp. Tickets are £16.75 for adults, £10 for children, over 60’s £15.75 and a family ticket is £45.50. You will find Dartmouth Museum on the first floor of the Butterwalk building in Duke Street. The small museum charts the history of the town through artefacts displayed across several rooms. Entry is £2 for adults, children aged 12-16 are 50p and concessions are £1.50. It is open daily all year round and you will find the latest opening times on the website. Next to the museum is the Dartmouth Wine Company offering 120 varieties of Malt Whisky, and is definitely worth a browse. For maps, local transport and attraction information visit the Dartmouth Visitor Centre, which is in the west corner of the Royal Avenue Gardens. Other attractions the include Greenway Estate, the home of the late writer Agatha Christie. Tours of the Britannia Royal Naval College can also be arranged through the centre.

HOW TO

Paying VAT on an imported boat BY TREVOR DANN Peters & May

T

he subject of a potential VAT bill on a used boat comes up regularly in internet chat rooms and yacht clubs across the country. These discussions normally take the form of whether a VAT bill is likely when buying a used boat, possibly because the original bill of sale is lost, or because the purchase is across borders. The truth is, there is a huge feature in that alone, but today we are going to look at how you

actually pay the VAT, if you know that VAT is due. The most likely scenario in which you will find yourself liable to pay VAT, is if you buy a boat from outside of the EU. That’s not to say that boats purchased within the EU are always VAT paid either, so it is a case of buyer beware. Our closest non-EU neighbour, and most likely source of a good value non VAT paid used boat, is

of course the Channel Islands. If you buy a boat in Guernsey or Jersey, you will have a VAT liability to settle. Even if that boat was previously VAT paid in the UK or EU, if the change of ownership takes place outside of the EU, and the new owner brings the boat back into the EU, the boat will have lost its VAT paid status and there will be a bill to pay. If you are buying from further afield, such as the US, the boat will be shipped and landed and will need to clear customs. If VAT and import duty is due, it will need

to be settled before removing the boat and you will get all the help you need from UK customs to ensure that happens. But what if you buy a boat from the Channel Islands and motor it back to the UK, or even one that is in the EU or UK but which is deemed VAT unpaid. How do you ensure that your import or sale is correctly accounted for in terms of VAT? Trevor Dann has been through this process, and found that it was not as easy as you might imagine to give money to HMRC. Here’s his story.

Getting advice

Plenty of places will tell you that you have to pay VAT, but not many places will inform you of how you go about it. Although Customs Notice 8 is the primary source of information about VAT liability, even this does not explain the process for actually paying the VAT if you do decide to import a boat. This is the process I went through in August/September 2015 when I bought my Corvette 32, then Coolavin II, now Boadicea, from St Helier, Jersey in the Channel Islands. Firstly, when I was narrowing down my purchase interests, and thought that this might involve a non-VAT paid boat from the channel Islands, I spoke with HMRC Small Craft Unit, also known as the Yacht Unit, in Portsmouth (0300 051 6922) for advice. Be aware once you have spoken to them you are on their radar, and they did follow up with a couple of calls to see how my search and purchase were proceeding. In Jersey When you buy

the boat, ensure that the invoice only shows importable goods. Services provided in Jersey, e.g. brokerage fees, do not need to be part of your VAT payment, but be sensible with any offsets or deductions, HMRC are not fools. I made a separate agreement to pay the broker his fee on behalf of the purchaser. I think that it may be possible to extend this to items of used inventory, but I am not sure of this point, and I didn’t reduce for inventory provided. If you are interested in this, then I would suggest discussing it with HMRC staff. For use of the boat whilst still in the Channel Islands check with the HM, they will know their rules. I did have to show my purchase invoice to be able to buy duty free fuel on my departure. I also had to ensure that the broker had declared the sale to the Jersey HM, who de-listed the boat, but this was not an issue at all. The SSR in Jersey is different to the one in the UK so the original SSR number was not transferable and I had to register the boat on the UK SSR. 50

Arrival in the UK Fill out the normal Customs declaration C1332 Part 2 (Part 1 is for an outward voyage which will not exist) for vessels arriving in the UK from outside of the EU, and notify the HMRC yacht unit at Dover of your arrival in the normal way. I also informed them it was an import from CI and that I was already in contact with their Small Craft Unit. No arrival inspection was required. I did fly a Q Flag A yellow Q Flag should be flown until advised I could haul it down, as is the until a boat has cleared customs normal procedure. Within a couple of weeks of arriving in the UK, fill out HMRC form C384 and send this to HMRC Small Craft unit, with a copy of the boat’s purchase invoice. HMRC SCU (or Yacht Unit) will then send you their VAT invoice, which you pay in the normal way to HMRC. Make sure you get a payment receipt, as the departments find talking to each other difficult, and I had to prove separately to the SCU that I had paid. I was then sent a stamped receipt version of the C384 which is now laminated as my VAT paid proof. Because I was changing the boat’s name I requested that they show both the old and new names on the C384, for avoidance of any doubt at a later date, and they were quite amenable to doing this. The amount is levied at the current % VAT rate on the purchase price as shown on the invoice, and this is non negotiable. They did not pass an opinion on the purchase price nor invoice. However, I would expect that they do have the power to re-value the vessel if they feel the submitted sum is unrealistic. They did visit my boat, although they did not undertake any form of inspection, nor did they make any comment about the boat beyond exchanging normal pleasantries.

A note about Duty and RCD

Import Duty is different to VAT, and will depend upon where the boat has originated from, and the type of boat you are importing. For the Channel Islands, who although outside the EU, are part of the European Economic Area (EEA), the Duty rate is 0%. If you are buying outside the EEA you should consider the Duty % as this could be a significant extra cost, which itself is liable for VAT. If you have the boat shipped to the UK, your VAT liability may be for the price of the boat, plus import duty, plus shipping costs, so do your research thoroughly as a larger than expected VAT bill may seriously affect the economics of importing the boat. Also be aware that boats imported from outside the EEA / EU will also require compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive. Even older boats that were built before the RCD was introduced, will need to be proved RCD compliant before being put into service, or sold on, within the EU. This process is called post construction assessment, and is worth a feature in its own right, but getting an imported boat through post construction assessment will be much easier if the boat is a model already imported and sold into the EU, fitted with an engine that meets the same criteria. RCD II has tightened up procedures but, undertaken wisely and on the correct boat, post construction assessment can cost from as little as a few hundred pounds, as long as no serious rectification work is required. F

ollowing hot on the heels of Bavaria’s E40 sedan and flybridge models, the German builder has just unveiled their new, smaller model from the same range. The E34 left the factory just a couple of weeks ago and Motorboat Owner was the first UK mag to get onboard for a test. Like the E40, a flybridge version will be following shortly. The E40 was quite remarkable in its design and the E34 continues this trend. In fact I’ll go beyond that and say that the E34 is like a mini-me to the E40, with just a couple of compromises due to the reduced space the designers had to work with. If you liked the E40, but found the price was out of reach, then the E34 could be just the boat for you.

One of those compromises comes in the form of the number of cabins. The E40 we tested had three doubles, while the E34 has just two. Having said that, the two it has are both very good. Starting with the bow cabin, you get a nice big double island berth, that can be converted into two singles by releasing a couple of latches and pushing the aft

ends apart, scissor style. This provides the owner with the flexibility of a cabin for either two children, or some adult guests. At the aft end of the berth there is a reasonable amount of free standing space and, with well over 6ft headroom and a full-length mirror on the door, this is a great place to get dressed and

prepared for the day. Overall the cabin is quite simple, with a single hanging wardrobe to port, a small locker below and some shelf space down either side. There is a small opening port on either side, together with a larger fixed window, and an opening hatch overhead. The use of light materials, and the sheer volume of space in here creates a light and airy space, despite the relatively small glass area. This

cabin comes with the benefit of a private ensuite toilet compartment. Again this is simple, but practical, with a toilet, sink and a generous amount of storage courtesy of cupboards above and below the sink, a small locker within the worktop, and an open shelf below the opening port. On the aft bulkhead, a hatch provides access to the holding tank. There is no shower in this toilet compartment, but that is because the boat has a separate shower compartment, accessed from the companionway just aft of the forward cabin, on the port side. This

compartment, like the toilet, also offers over 6ft headroom, has a decent amount of lateral space and comes with a small opening port and a seat. Back out in the companionway, a set of steps take you aft and up into the wheelhouse. These steps lift, with the aid of two gas struts, to provide access to the forward end of the engine room and good access to the service items on the forward end of the engine, with enough space to crawl in for further access, if needed. Moving up and aft into the wheelhouse, there will be a feeling of dejavu for anyone

who has been on the E40. Apart from the smaller dimensions, there is very little to tell the models apart. The main feature is, of course, the helm position, which is placed aft and comes with a yacht style binnacle. Despite the space limitations of not having a full wraparound dash, there is still plenty of room for all the essential controls, instruments and a decent sized multi-function display. Like the E40, the helm provides a commanding view, aided by the vast glass panels around the wheelhouse, and in particular the panoramic forward screen, while allowing the helm to feel part of the social scene onboard. There is room for one more to sit next to the skipper, with space for a few more around the saloon table just in front. Again, like the E40. The glass doors and panels behind the helm open up to also bring those sitting in the cockpit into the mix, effectively joining the outside space to the inside. be dropped to create a further occasional double berth if required. On the port side of the wheelhouse you get a large, and very practical, galley. This comprises a double sink, a two-burner hob, an oven and a top opening fridge within the worktop. A second, drawer type, fridge is located in the base of the starboard seating, easily accessible from the galley. In the forward most part of the galley worktop, there is a concealed TV.

I wasn’t able to see this working on the day, but hopefully when it pops out it also swivels to face the starboard side seating. Storage in the galley is plentiful, with numerous lockers and drawers beneath the worktop, as well as further storage beneath the starboard side seating. Headroom in the wheelhouse of the sedan version is 7ft 6in and this, together with the large wheelhouse windows makes this space feel bigger than it is, giving you the sense that you are on a boat of a much larger size. As well as being able to open up the back of the wheelhouse, extra ventilation is provided by a sliding window above the galley, another next to the helm, two electrically operated overhead hatches forward and another two manual hatches aft, just above the helm position. Like the E40, just aft of the helm position there is a set of steps leading down to a lower companionway. Here is where you will find the boat’s second cabin, as well as a second toilet compartment. The cabin provides a double berth, thwartships, with a small opening port

and fixed hull window like those found in the forward cabin. Storage is plentiful, with a half height hanging locker plus two large cupboards on the inboard bulkhead. Again, headroom in the standing area of very generous, at 6ft 5in and standing room floor space is more than adequate. Hatches on the aft bulkhead provide access to the boat’s steering gear, and here is where you will also find the boat’s emergency tiller handle. The toilet compartment, which is not ensuite and acts as the boat’s day toilet, again offers good headroom and facilities to match the forward cabin’s en-suite. There is just a little less storage here compared to the forward toilet, as the holding tank has been installed behind the mirror therefore losing this space as an additional locker. The set of three steps that lead up from this aft accommodation lift to reveal a space that can be occupied by another fridge. This full-sized unit compliments the two smaller refrigeration units found in the wheelhouse. On the forward bulkhead

to this lower companionway, a half height hatch provides access to the aft end of the engine and engine room. Moving outside, the cockpit provides seating for four on an L-shaped bench with the option for a table, if required. An additional seat is also available on the port quarter, within which there is a useful locker for ropes or other deckware. The L-shaped seat only has storage below the starboard section, the forward section forming the standing headroom in the cabin below. This locker is large enough to store the cockpit table, when not in use, as well as the set of steps that can be fitted on either the port or starboard gunwale for boarding purposes, or on the swim platform, to act as a bathing ladder. of the steps down into the wheelhouse, houses the boat’s gas cylinders and looks to have been designed for a pair of Camping Gaz 907’s. A cockpit overhang provides a good degree of protection to the occupants, although the outermost seat of the L shape, and the individual seat opposite, are just on the edge of the overhang so are likely to get dripped on in rainy conditions. Like the E40, the swim platform is a section of the transom, which is lowered and raised with gas strut assistance. When it is down, you have three nice, large steps down from the cockpit, the middle one of which contains a small hatch that provides access to the emergency tiller connection. A nice improvement here over the first E40 that we tested, is that the small section

of deck between the cockpit and platform when it is raised, is no longer loose. Instead of having to lift this heavy piece of GRP out, and finding somewhere to store it, when you want to lower the platform, it now folds back on itself to form part of the lowered unit, which is a much better arrangement. Boarding is best achieved via a gate in the guardrails on either side, aided by the steps if coming up from normal pontoon height, but you also get some very small, but eminently usable moulded steps on each aft corner. They don’t look much, but work well for the nimble. The side decks are approx 9in wide and easy to negotiate, with access all the way around the boat aided by grabrails on the wheelhouse sides and nice high guardrails.

These have been extended on the transom to form a smaller ‘gate’ for bathing platform access, which provides better ‘grabability’ when ascending the transom steps. While the total walk around decks are nice, you do have to be aware of the small steps that are moulded into them on each aft quarter. You will soon get used to them, but probably not until you have experienced the odd trip or toe stub. Up at the bow, you can have sunpad

“The yacht style console provides a great helming experience” cushions on top of the forward cabin roof and in front of this your crew gets a nice big flat area to work the bow lines or anchor. A hatch in the floor here lifts to reveal a big, deep anchor locker with a concealed horizontally mounted electric anchor winch. The section of the wheelhouse roof that overhangs the cockpit can have optional solar panels installed. These are designed to charge the service batteries which, on hybrid or fully electric versions, are kept completely separate to the propulsion units, and would be a great option to take if you are planning to cruise away from shorepower for an extended period. Underway With the largest engine option, the E34 will cruise at speeds of up to 12 knots. With the 110hp Volvo D3, as fitted to our test boat, we achieved 9 knots flat out. Drop down to 7 knots, which is a nice cruising speed, and you get a range of around 350nm. Or 700nm with the extended tank option, which doubles your fuel capacity to 540 litres. At river speeds of around 5 knots this boat was burning just 1.7lph, meaning you can go for nearly 800nm with the standard tank or 1600nm with the additional tank option. That means that you could go from Calais, all the way down to the Med, and back, on one fill up! If you opt for the little D2 60hp engine option, expect a top speed of around 7.5 knots.

Like the E40, the helming experience is a joy. The large windows give a fantastic view, and the aft helm position feels far more natural than you might expect. What feels a little unnatural, at least at first, is the way the hull handles. The hull is round in shape with a keel and the result is a boat that leans out on a turn, rather like a ship. The big yacht-like steering wheel provides a slow but steady response, but you can speed up and tighten a turn with a little bit of throttle if needed. One noticeable improvement over the E40 that we tested was noise levels. We tested an early E40 and found that the aft hatch to the engine bay allowed sound to escape, which was then enhanced, drum-like, by the aft lower companionway. Bavaria has clearly sorted this on the E34, and I suspect later E40’s, and noise levels were much more acceptable, even at full speed. Having said that, this is not a boat that requires full throttle, not least because of what it does to your fuel consumption for very little gain. Stick to no more than 7 or 8 knots and you are rewarded with a relaxed driving experience, made all the more pleasurable by being able to enjoy the time on the water surrounded by your friends or family. During our test, we were met with mill pond like conditions, so

didn’t get to experience the boat in any kind of sea. Tackling the wake of other boats indicated that it almost certainly delivers a soft ride, like the E40, but we suspect in a head sea the going might be a little wet. That’s not a problem though for this wheelhouse cruiser. Just stick the wipers on and continue to enjoy that panoramic view. Conclusion When you are onboard, it is hard to believe that you are on a 10m boat. Two cabins at opposite ends of the boat, two toilet compartments, a separate shower compartment and a wheelhouse large enough to hold a party in, all on a boat that is 33ft long, is only just short of physics defying. Add to this the exceptional headroom throughout, an inland

waterways compliant air draft and cheap and efficient cruising and you have the perfect package, as long as you are happy to forego speed. As an inland waterways based boat, maybe with an occasional estuary or coastal foray, it is going to be hard to find a better gathering of features, function, specification and price than that provided by the E34. A flybridge version, which will be available soon, will add just 0.35m to the air draft, which is achieved by stealing a little bit of height from the wheelhouse, but it will be interesting to see how the slightly higher centre of gravity affects the on-water experience. Bavaria tell me that they set

out to create a floating apartment, and with the space and facilities that the E34 offers, I think they have fully achieved their aim. If you are looking for a boat for extended inland cruising, then look no further.

Navico, the electronics giant that owns the Simrad, B&G and Lowrance brands, has enhanced its range of Lowrance Elite entry level multi-function displays with some new 9 and 12-inch models. The Elite-9 Ti and Elite-12 Ti are both touchscreen chartplotter/fishfinders with all the usual Elite-Ti functions and features, but on larger, higher resolution screens. These features include CHIRP and Broadband sounder, SideScan, DownScan, StructureMap Live, trolling motor and power pole control, wireless and Bluetooth connectivity and screen mirroring. They also use Navico’s smart TotalScan transducer, which means that a single transducer will do all of the clever underwater stuff, making installation easier and helping to keep the cost down. On that final point, the 9 inch model starts at £910, and the 12 inch at £2,230. For those on a budget, or with limited space, there are also 5 and 7 inch models available starting at £610

To me, true ease of use means being able to do all of the basics, and some of the more complex stuff, without needing to refer to the manual. On that score, the EliteTi series scores pretty well. I was able to enter waypoints and create routes, either on the touchscreen or via the menus and I was able to enter the setup functions to adjust units and colour schemes etc. The units are able to display all NMEA2000 data, so you can use them as a glass bridge in place of engine instruments and these screens are all customisable and easy to set up as required. In short it was about 95% instantly intuitive with just a little bit of fumbling through the menus to find the exact function I needed. When There are many different charting options with the Elite-Ti series including Navionics & C-Map customizing screens, it mostly works 66

on a drag and drop basis and perhaps the only thing I found non-intuitive was how to change the size of the boxes when you had multiple functions on one screen, I wanted to simply slide the box edge to make it bigger and smaller, but I had to go through the menu functions first, which was a bit more fiddly than I would have liked. Although the units mostly operate via the touchscreen, there are a few buttons on the side and these are needed for certain functions. In fact some functions are unique to either the touchscreen or the buttons, so they are not totally one thing or the other. Charting options include the built-in charts that the units come with, or the possibility to upgrade using either C-Map or Navionics cartography. You can also use Navico’s Insight Genesis cartography with the option to create your own, more accurate charts of your local area, which is great for fishing. The processor was plenty fast enough, with seamless zooming and fast scrolling across the map. Bow trolling motors are not that popular in the UK, but it was interesting to see how the unit integrates with one and allows you to control the bow motor from the helm. You can also operate an autopilot from the screen too, if you have one fitted. The underwater features were good. The sounder delivered a crisp return and the SideScan and DownScan delivered some nice imagery of the water and seabed below the boat, although advances in this technology are starting to separate entry and mid-level kit from the top end stuff,

and TrackBack allows you to scroll back through StructureScan history to analyse any features seen. One thing to bear in mind, particularly with SideScan, is that if you combine a transom mount transducer with an outboard motor, you will seriously affect the ability of the SideScan to deliver good imagery on the outboard motor side of the transducer. The units come with two Ethernet connections, which means you can daisy chain multiple units together, and with the wireless connections it is easy to set up a phone or a tablet to act as a repeater or even controller for some functions. Material Matters

Simon Everett looks at the evolution of boat building materials, probes the pros and cons of each and ponders how each material still has a place in modern boat building W

ood is the most natural thing to build a boat from, and is the material that all of our modern designs have to thank for the quantum leaps in progress from the very simple shapes of the earliest boats. Working with wood though, does require highly skilled labour who understand the traditional building methods that have

been used for boat and ship building for centuries. Wood is incredibly durable, relatively easy to repair and, provided the top coat of varnish, paint or epoxy sheathing is looked after properly, will last as long as any other material. For proof of this, just look at some of the classic yachts that are hundreds of years

Hot-moulded mahogany was used in the production of Faireys and Dell Quay Rangers in the 50’s and 60’s. In ancient times, oak was used to build iconic battleships, such as the Mary Rose

old and the wooden planks are still strong and resilient. Early racing boats that were built from wood delivered brilliant performance, and many circuit catamarans are still made from lightweight plywood, due to its excellent weight to strength ratio. Timber is also a very practical material to build a boat from, having positive buoyancy to start with, as well as natural insulating properties that reduces condensation on the inside of the hull. Not only that, but it is ecological too, provided the source of the timber is from sustainable, regenerated forests, or natural tree fall. The build process does require more time, but for exotic, one off, custom boats, wood still has a lot going for it. One cannot argue with the sheer beauty of a wonderfully prepared, mahogany and light wood combination sitting on the water. Next came iron, or steel as the form it is used in now, because nobody uses cast

iron, the SS Great Eastern. That single project changed the face of the ship building industry for ever. Prior to his all-metal ship, wood was still used as the main construction material, with metal sometimes used for protective sheathing. The SS Great Eastern had a hull made entirely from cast iron sheets riveted together and supported by beams every 6 feet. It featured a true, double skinned hull for the first time. She was truly a ship that was years ahead of her time. Steel is not very popular for leisure boats because it is cold, noisy and can be

rather high on maintenance. However, in its favour is the fact that steel is cheap, strong and easy to weld or rivet. It can also be built in sections that can be joined later, which is why it is used for the very largest vessels on earth. The downsides are that it can corrode rapidly, given the wrong environmental conditions and poor protection, and is heavy in comparison to all other boat building materials. This last point means a steel boat will require more power than a similar boat made from lighter materials, such as aluminium or a modern composite. Steel tends to be used

on larger craft, where economies of scale play a major part, and especially where the vessel is expected to come into contact with ice, as steel is very abrasion resistant and, by increasing the thickness in critical areas, can be made massively strong and stiff. Areas thinned by corrosion can be cut out and new panels easily welded in place at a realistic cost. As an alternative to steel, aluminium has been used as a boat building material since the days of Napolean, when he had a small lake boat built out of the material purely to make a statement. In those days aluminium was more expensive than gold. Since the 1920s aluminium has been commonly used as a boat building material. In many of the more remote regions of the world or where there are extremes of climate it is the most popular material of choice due to its ruggedness, its ability to shrug off weathering and good impact resistance. Aluminium is a third of the weight of steel for a comparable strength, thereby resulting in lighter displacement and shallower draft. A lighter boat requires less power thereby

reducing the initial capital cost for a smaller engine and running costs through better fuel consumption. Aluminium creates a stiff, strong hull with minimal maintenance and a very long service life. The ubiquitous GRP boat has now been around for over 60 years, with the Chris Craft Silver Arrow being credited by some as the first all GRP production motorboat. Chris Craft also dabbled with the use of the new fangled material when they used GRP for the engine hatches and aesthetic mouldings, the most notable being that huge, signature fin on the Cobra that was inspired by a shark. When the Silver Arrow was built, GRP sailing boats had been around for over 25 years, in small

numbers, and mainly as experimental designs, but the system had been well tried. Modern boat building is dominated by the use of laminated plastics of various types, all generally lumped under the heading of Glass Reinforced Plastic, or GRP for short. These modern composite materials have plenty of desirable properties, not least of which is the ability to perfectly replicate shapes, time after time, using automation or relatively low skilled labour. This singular ability allowed the boat building industry to mass produce craft to very close tolerances and replicate in a much shorter time frame. Composite materials are incredibly strong and can rival metals for their strength to weight capabilities. There are pros and cons for all materials used for boat building, one of the greatest concerns that gets talked about is the

maintenance factor. GRP is not, as so many people think, maintenance free and cannot simply be washed off and left. The resins used in modern laminations are better than the earlier versions, with the inclusion of colour fasteners and Ultra Violet inhibitors to prevent fading and chalking, but even these modern resin matrices require regular maintenance in the form of washing, waxing and polishing if they are to remain looking as good as new for any length of time. The early adopters of GRP didn’t know the material like we do now, so they tended to use more of it, with a ‘make it thicker, make it stronger’ mentality, consequently many classic boats made of GRP are in good or worthwhile restorable condition because they were so over engineered, but they are heavy in comparison to a more modern boat. As

time goes by, more and more GRP boats will become classics, so don’t be put off by those purists who say this material is, “not quite right” for a classic boat, there are some absolute head turners and iconic boats made from GRP. Aluminium is another very good boat building material that has started to find wider appeal, although in Australia and

the northern latitudes aluminium has been the material of choice for many decades because, particularly as far as the latter is concerned, it doesn’t become brittle at low temperatures like GRP can. after the end of World War II were built from a saltwater corrosion resistant alloy of aluminium. These runabouts were built using engineering and fabrication techniques employed for building Spitfires, which may explain why they have endured. Throughout their lives, mostly as waterski towing boats, they have withstood a tremendous pounding for 60-odd years, yet they are still almost as good as the day they were made. The paint might require attention, but the material is sound. Riveted boats do need to be carefully inspected for missing or bodged rivets, as well as dents to the skin sheets, but that is all, the design was superlative, thanks to the aeroplane designers’ input who were used to making things that

had to endure far higher stresses than these little boats will ever have been put through. Modern forming techniques allow sheets of aluminium to be shaped without any seams whatsoever, so there are now smaller aluminium boats where the hull has been formed from one sheet of material, which is cold rolled into shape and then fitted out by welding or riveting the components into place as required. Other models are an allwelded construction, with high precision welding able to create perfect joins, which are immensely strong. These boats are reinforced by the use of channel extrusions to create a boat that is insanely robust. The majority of these boats are used in the hard, workaday world of heavy commercial use. Many fast ferries around the world are built from aluminium, as are a huge number of the vessels that service windfarms, landing craft and a number of smaller fishing craft and fish farm tenders. Aluminium is chosen for these boats because it results in boats that can stand continued abuse for many years. It is now possible to order aluminium

boats in kit form, with all the panels pre-cut, using laser or plasma cutting technologies for ultimate precision, ready for the components to be welded together, which speeds up the time in production. Whilst this technique has yet to be applied to the leisure boat market, it is very prevalent in the commercial workboat world, especially for wind farm supply vessels where the demand for boats is seemingly insatiable. So, as you can see, there is no perfect boat building material, but the choice we have now means there is a construction material and method to suit all purposes, given the necessary budget. The main components of hull and deck are just the start, the real cost and consideration needs to be applied to the machinery and accommodations, which is where the majority of costs are accumulated.

Once built, boats can be kept going almost indefinitely, regardless of the construction, provided they are given regular maintenance and repairs are carried out correctly. Being part of the liquid world, an old boat is much like the man Heraclitus wrote about: ‘no man steps into the same river twice, for he is not the same man, and it is not the same river’.

Sealine S23/25

S

ealine has a long history of delivering entry-level sportscruisers, but there is one boat that we think stands out from the crowd as the perfect package, and sadly the last of its size from the British manufacturer, the S23/25. Sealine burst onto the British boating scene in the 1970’s with outdrive or outboard-powered, open-plan cabin cruisers offering weekending and family boating. It all started in 1973 with the conservatively-styled, simulation clinkerhulled 23 Continental. Years later the colourful, sporty and fast 18, 19 and 22 models followed. Considered ‘retro’

today, these compact trailboats proved very popular, and were the aspiration of many a young British boater. Sealine had landed. Soon the boatbuilder, now based in Kidderminster, was expanding into, what we would call, the ‘wide body’ sportscruiser market, with the introduction of models such as the iconic Ambassador 285 and 255. However, the 20ft+ bracket was still being addressed with the Envoy, and later Senator ranges. This brought us a succession of compact and trailable models including the 215, 218, 220, 230 and 240. Such boats were powered by a single petrol or diesel sterndrive and offered four berth

accommodation down below. The introduction of the 28 Bolero saw the birth of the S series, when it was renamed as the S28. Consequently the 240 Senator, Sealine’s smallest, trailable model at the time, became the S24. Sealine would, no doubt, have been feeling the heat from the petrol-headed US market with a deluge of entry-level cruisers from the likes of Bayliner and Sea Ray, entering the UK. However, Sealine were still quite unique in producing a 20ft+ cruiser with a diesel engine. Even when US company Brunswick, owner of the Bayliner brand, took Sealine over in 2001, they stood by

its accessible entry-level models, and most importantly, the S24. In January 2002 the all-new S23 Open Sport was unveiled at the London Boat Show, replacing the S24. Stylish, sporty and priced from £45k, it was a little more subtle in its styling and more upright in form than the 240/S24. It also had a deeper vee hull than its predecessor. Measuring 25ft exactly, it offered four berths, a versatile cockpit, and came with a choice of two, well-matched, petrol or diesel sterndrive options. It had some clever features too, such as asymmetrical side decks and a fold-out bathing

platform. It also came with a rather clever buyer incentive, Sealine was offering buyers their money back on all diesel S23s if they traded up within two years of purchase. It was a massive success. By the late 00’s, US boat builders were beginning to import diesel-powered 25ft sportscruisers into the UK. Plus there was a threat from a new German make, Bavaria, with its Volvo diesel-powered 25 Sport model. In 2005 the S23 was renamed the S25, which was not only a better representation of its actual length, it also placed it in a better market position to tackle the 25ft opposition head on. With the new Volvo D-series range of diesel engine expanding, by late 2006 the S25 was being made available with a D3 190hp engine priced at £60,674. The S25 ceased production in 2008, and was sadly the last of a breed from Sealine. After this date, the entry-level models became the S29 and

the hardtop version, the SC29. Today, used prices for diesel-powered S23s and S25s range from £28-£36k. We decided to take a closer look to see what you get for your money. Interior Three narrow teak steps lead down into a saloon area, which feels quite spacious, private and cosy. Sealine opted for a clean, but quality look for the interior, offering a classic but basic choice of colours and finishes. Consequently interiors will be very similar across the models. Metallic surfaces, glossy Rosewood, ivory coloured vinyl linings, taupe coloured carpets and blue or beige upholstery, even leather, give the feel of a bigger boat and are easy to care for. The headroom in this main cabin area is approximately 5ft 9in, expanding to 6ft with a convex moulding in the roof lining where you need it most, in front of the dinette

table and hob. Light and ventilation is provided by a porthole on each side and a foredeck escape hatch. Immediately to port, a flush galley worktop disguises a two-burner hob and grill, with a large metal sink/drainer aft, beneath a glass cover. The compact galley unit offers a surprising amount of storage for weekending, or longer stays aboard, arguably more so than its US rivals. Under the sink there is a huge storage locker, which is ideal for stowing pots, pans and crockery. In this locker you will also find the gas shut-off valves for the hob/grill. Under the hob/grill is a large drawer with various storage solutions that can be suspended from its metal framework. There is also a shelf above the galley, which can be used for cups and condiments. You will note that there is no galley fridge. This is, in fact, in the cockpit, which unfortunately means that your ‘morning cuppa’ will call for a visit to the cockpit, potentially in your PJ’s. Inspect the galley worktop, which appears to be aluminium and is susceptible to

corrosion. There is only a single socket in the galley, and this is one of just two in the boat’s interior, which could prove a little restricting. However, with gas for cooking, prolonged stays away from shorepower should be manageable. Finally there is a small rubbish bin housed inside the companionway steps. In the forward part of the cabin is a raised U-shaped dinette area with a twin pedestal table. Here you can seat four adults or a family around the table, or it is an ideal and cosy place for two to lounge of an evening. The dinette converts into a double berth by dropping the table top, and hinging up the forward backrest to provide extra legroom. Two infill cushions, which stow neatly in the bow void, and a small bolt-in extension, complete the bed, which measures 5ft 10in in the middle. Obviously it is important to check such items are onboard the boat at the time of purchase, and not in the previous owner’s garage. Three lined storage bins under the seating provide plenty of storage for items such as bedding and lifejackets.

There is a small hanging locker to starboard, with a shelf, 240v plug and TV socket, if fitted, on top. Unfortunately Sealine’s one-piece interior moulding does not incorporate bilge hatches in the floor, which is a shame, particularly for the areas under the raised dinette and saloon floor. This also leaves no opportunity to inspect the internal hull structure of the boat. Further aft is the compact toilet compartment, which is well appointed, with a washbasin, shower mixer tap, sea toilet and two open storage shelves. However, this lined compartment is raised and therefore is quite restricted in headroom, approximately 5ft 5in, so those taller will need to take their shower seated. Boats destined for inland waterways were often fitted with a waste holding tank and electric macerator, a useful extra costing in the region of £1280 in 2004. The boat’s main switch panel is located above the entrance to the mid berth. When it comes to the mid berth Sealine followed a classic blueprint seen on historic models such as the 218. The

companionway is to port, thus leaving access to the mid berth still very much a crawl in, albeit cushioned, affair. However, the berth redeems itself by being of ample proportions, at 6ft 4in in length and 4ft 2in in width. It is also lit and ventilated by a large hatch into the cockpit, and has a curtain for privacy. The moulding of the double helm seat above provides seated headroom, approx 3ft 6in. Removable Velcro-ed panels in the aft bulkhead allow access to the transducer and log to port, and toilet seacocks and main fuse box to starboard. Whilst in this berth we would recommend inspecting the 50-gallon fuel tank. The top of tank is accessible by lifting out the base of the open locker in the bulkhead. The tank is usually aluminium and could be suffering from corrosion. Repair or replacement of the fuel tank is likely to be a major job. You’ll find the boat’s 26-gallon water tank, plus access to the shower sump and water pump, under the berth. Diesel heating (a £2k factory extra) is a useful addition, and will definitely extend

your season. Look for a heater vent in the cockpit, as this will keep you nice and toasty under cover in colder months. Cockpit and helm The one-level cockpit seats six people, and has a double helm seat backing on to a four-person dinette-cum-sunpad area on the starboard side. A good size, 46-litre fridge can be found in the locker opposite the dinette, which has a useful shelf on top. Next to the fridge is a gas locker, capable of taking two 907 size Camping Gaz cylinders, and another useful storage locker. The cockpit dinette usually has a heavy-duty blue composite table, which clamps onto a rail on the cockpit coaming and is supported by a pedestal. The tabletop slots between the two seats and, with two infill cushions, forms a sunpad. All items mentioned above can be stowed in the mid berth. However, the tabletop is quite awkward and heavy to move about, so therefore can be hinged up for easier engine access. The UK teak supplier, Marine Teak offers replacement S23/25 teak tabletops for £349. Popular cockpit extras are a transom shower, which was £158, and a navy blue cockpit carpet at £141. At the helm, a navy blue console incorporates a stylish metallic dash panel, chart storage, a

The versatile cockpit offers seating for up to six people and has a 46-litre fridge built in to the coaming

compass and navigation equipment, if fitted. Factory optional extras here were a Raymarine Raychart 425 chartplotter and ST60 speed and depth instruments. Inspect the aluminium dash panels, which can corrode through exposure to saltwater and the elements. There is a nonadjustable double helm seat for the driver and co pilot, and here the windscreen provides decent protection when seated. There is a lack of storage for small items, such as sunglasses, at the helm, so owners may have fitted a storage pocket under the helm console. There is a fair bit of canvas to wrestle

with on these boats. The front, rear and side screens can usually be rolled up or removed individually. The top bimini part of the canopy is often in two sections, which can be rolled and secured inside a special cover around the stainless arch. For blasting about in sunny weather, removing all covers will provide the best driving experience This will also reduce the windage, which always helps on a light, single engined outdrive powered boat, especially when maneuvering at close quarters. A tonneau cover may also prove practical for weekend foreys. Removing the arch, brings the 3.04 metre air draught down to 1.95 metres, which is useful for low bridges.

On Deck Unlike many of its US 25ft rivals, this boat actually has enclosed side decks, as opposed to a walk-through windscreen and, uniquely on the S23/25, these decks are asymmetrical. Accessing these from the cockpit is easiest on the port side, where the deck offers between 7-8 inches Everything is neatly laid out on the stylish helm in width, while on the starboard side there console, with room to upgrade to a larger plotter is just enough legroom (4 inches approx) 82

The S23/25 offers sporty and reassuring handling. Unique asymmetrical side decks are very practical

to shuffle back to the cockpit. However, with the canopy and framework in place, moving out on the decks from the cockpit is somewhat precarious, so again with the canvas ‘all off ’ it makes life on deck easier. Alternatively, the boat is small enough to step off the stern with a bow rope, negating the need to go forward on deck at all. The boat is equipped with three cleats on each side. On deck, a gradually sloping foredeck leads to a recessed flat section at the bow. This incorporates a large anchor locker, which is ample for swallowing items such as a bucket and hose reel, plus there is a bar on the inside of its hatch for tethering stowed ropes and fenders. An electric winch was a popular extra (£822), fitted on top of an internal moulding. In achieving maximum space for the interior and cockpit, Sealine was left with a very narrow integral bathing platform at the stern, so a clever foldout platform was added. Measuring just under 2ft and offset to starboard, not only is it solid enough for regular use, but you don’t have

to pay mooring fees for it in your marina. Access ashore is via a transom gate on the port side. This is set deep into the transom moulding, maximising the amount of platform on this side, and incorporates an integral bathing ladder. Hull and Handling These boats are very easy to handle at slow speeds. When it comes to putting on the power, an inner sportsboat is just waiting to be unleashed. The S23/25 is a fun boat to drive, but most importantly, with its deep V hull shape, it is also forgiving, responsive and offers a reassuring ride, should conditions become choppy. Like many boats of this size, it is quite sensitive to wind and weight distribution at speed. Therefore trim tabs, which were a factory extra on the S23/25, are very useful, maybe even imperative. If fitted, we would recommend checking these are functioning correctly on a seatrial. Most S23/25’s were fitted with an Eltrim system, which has the electric motor mounted in the water. Unfortunately these can be a

A Volvo KAD32 is the most common engine, mated to either a DPE or DPS outdrive

little temperamental if the rubber bellows are allowed to deteriorate and let water in. These boats are quite buoyant, and are therefore described as ‘tippy’ at rest. This is common for boats of this size, and is something that you will get used to. If the boat is out of the water, inspect the hull for damage, the underwater skin fittings for corrosion, and the plastic hull skin fittings for degradation. A moulded, anchor-stowing bowsprit is a characteristic of this model. It is worth inspecting the surrounding fibreglass for anchor retrieval nicks or rubbing damage from the chain. You will find the boats HIN (hull identification number) embossed into the hull on the stern quarter. This indicates the production year in the last two digits. Weighing approximately 2.5 tonnes, with the right tow vehicle and heavy-duty trailer, the Sealine S23/25 is trailable. At approaching 3.5 tonnes on a trailer, it is large and heavy, so perhaps not a boat that you would want to consider launching and recovering regularly. However, towing it to the Med, or far flung UK destinations such as the Caledonian Canal, Windermere or Loch Lomond, is very doable. For those going coastal, it is also ideal for

drystacking, which could prove a cheaper option than a marina and save money on service and antifoul costs. Engines S23 and S25’s were fitted with a single diesel or petrol Volvo sterndrive. From 2002 the S23 was offered with a petrol V6 225hp 4.3l GXi engine, giving a top speed of 31-33 knots and priced at £51,444, or a diesel 170hp KAD32 priced at £53,854 giving 28-30 knots. The KAD32 was mated to either a DPE or DPS drive, while the V6 petrol would have been mated to a DPS drive, both with duo props. By late 2006 the S25 was available with the existing petrol engine or a Volvo D3 190hp diesel, priced at £60,674. The D3 came with the upmarket EVC electronic controls. Very few petrol or D3 versions were built. The Volvo KAD32 engine is the most common installation and delivers 4-5 miles per gallon at cruising speeds of approximately 25 knots, and a safe range of approximately 150 nautical miles. It is a basic, reliable, mechanical engine that is very simple to work on and an excellent match for this boat. The only thing we would point out for coastal cruising

is, if you are running at intermediary speeds, which is often unavoidable if you hit choppy conditions, the whine from the supercharger can be quite intrusive. Otherwise it is quite possibly one of Volvos best compact diesels. You should expect to pay in the region of £600 for engine and drive servicing. We would recommend checking that engine and drive have been maintained regularly, ideally with records to document this since new. One weak point on this engine is the oil sump, which is prone to corrosion, eventually leading to oil leaks. Replacement is around £700 and will require engine removal. A properly maintained KAD32 with correct props on a sea trial should rev under load between 3600-3900. If the boat is out of the water, check the drive for excessive play and corrosion. Also inspect the bellows and duo props for damage. Engine access is via a large and heavy

hatch in the cockpit floor. Lifting this requires the removal of the two dinette seat cushions, with the hatch lifting the aft seat base simultaneously. The hatch is supported by a metal arm, much like the bonnet of a car, which can be a bit tricky to put in place, whilst holding up the hatch. For ease, a gas strut would be a great upgrade here. Inside the neatly fitted out engine bay there is a surprising amount of space to work around the engine, which is a real plus when it comes to maintenance. A calorifier is fitted on the port side, with engine and domestic batteries each side. Conclusion Sealine, we salute you for bringing us generations of compact sportscruisers, and for supporting this market for over thirty years. The S23/25 is compact, versatile, easy to maintain, easy to handle, fun and above all, affordable.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.
