The week before Easter, while the boat was out of the water, the sun shone and the mercury hit the 20’s. How on earth do the weather gods know when Easter is? I thought one of the reasons we moved it around was to fool them into perhaps letting us have more of the same. Unfortunately it was not to be, but that didn’t keep us in port. I had to give those

I have cruised extensively enough to know that fishing pots can be a bit of a problem. If you have explored the Sussex coast you will have seen how they, almost universally, mark their pots with a big stick and a flag, east of Selsey bill, just how it should be. Venture west of the bill, however, and it’s a different story. Dark 5-litre bottles dropped in the middle of a fairway, being pulled just under the surface by the tide, are ready to catch the next unsuspecting boater. NEWS Lobster Pot Petition Through a petition to the government, leisure boaters in the power and sail sectors are campaigning against poorly marked lobster pots in UK waters. Entitled ‘Lobster Pots and Small Craft Safety, time to change the rules’, the petition states “We, the undersigned, urge the Minister of State (DEFRA) to improve the way static fishing gear is marked for the safety of all small craft at sea. We believe that the current, voluntary arrangements and guidance have not been adequate and that the number of call-outs by the RNLI and coastguard, to small craft disabled by fouled propellers and rudders, shows the significance of the problem. We ask that DEFRA seek views regarding enforceable regulation among other options. We hope that all stakeholders will work together, with DEFRA, to find a solution, particularly one that is cheap and practical for our fishermen.” The petition, which is sponsored by the Cruising Association (CA), needs 10,000 signatures for a government response, and at 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament. At the time of writing, the petition had received just under 6000 signatures. However, with a forthcoming general election, the petition will be cut short with a deadline of 2nd May.
New features at Southsea Fishing Show
On Saturday 6th May, between 10am-4pm the annual, free-entry Southsea Marina Fishing Show will be taking place, and this year it will have some new features. Local fishmonger, Johnsons Enterprises will be demonstrating the art of filleting fish in the Q&A tent and local sea anglers will also be talking about extreme fishing abroad and in the Solent. There will also be a boat jumble, RIBS and motorboats on display from Sea Ventures, Sussex Boat Shop, JBT Marine, RBS Marine and new equipment, with navigation equipment from Landau UK and a range of outboards from Golden Arrow Marine. Plus visitors will be able to get their lifejackets checked by the RNLI. 6

£1-million extension proposed for Mylor Yacht Harbour Mylor Yacht Harbour in Falmouth, Cornwall, has begun consultations for a project which could see more than £1 million invested in a new marina extension. The extension could see an extra 30 berths installed to meet with customer demands. Managing Director Neil Salter stressed “The extension we’re proposing is fairly modest, enhancing the site whilst not changing the views, the ambience or making any significant demands on either the environment or the shore-side infrastructure.” Discussions have begun with customers, local fishermen, neighbours and the community.

Do away with grubby canvas canopies when, at the touch of a button on the remote control, you can literally raise the roof in twenty seconds and cast off in the exciting new Alfastreet 18 or 23. The hydraulically operated, weatherproof, full canopy is just one of the great features of the
Alfastreet range of beautifully built dayboats available from Boat Showrooms. Visit our website to see full details including a YouTube video of the roof in action; better still come along and see the Alfastreet 18 or 23 demonstrators for yourself at Harleyford or Shepperton Marinas.

London Boat Show changes In response to visitor and exhibitor feedback, the London Boat Show organisers, British Marine, have made some big changes for the event in 2018, the most radical of which is turning the 10-day event into five days. The show will also be held a little later in the month, starting on the 10th of January, to provide a larger gap between Christmas and the New Year. While the boats will remain the ‘stars of the show’, there will also be complimentary ‘shows within the show’ with a Boating and Watersports Holiday Show already announced and another show to be revealed shortly. The London Boat Show will be held at ExCel London 10-14th January 2018. For tickets and details visit the website.

Brexit, what happens next ask RYA With Article 50 triggered nine months after the historic Brexit vote, in early April the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) addressed some important questions about what happens next and how will it affect boating in the UK. The RYA said it is ‘concerned about the prospect of border controls and restrictions on duration of stay, both for individuals and vessels wishing to visit Europe, the future ability of recreational craft and their contents to travel freely throughout Europe and the ability of RYA qualification-holders to work in EU territory. Clearly, many of the regulatory challenges currently faced by British recreational boaters have an EU dimension, such as red diesel, border controls, invasive non-native species, biocides, and European marine protected areas. The British exit from the EU might have an impact on all of these issues, but the nature and extent of that impact will remain unclear until the exit negotiations are underway.’ The RYA went on to state that it ‘works on a wide range of issues affecting boating that do not currently have an EU dimension’, giving the example of the requirement for private recreational skippers to hold qualifications as a national legislation and nothing to do with the EU. ‘Domestic UK issues, such as national marine protected areas (including MCZs), offshore renewable energy installations, carriage and disposal of flares, lifejackets, light dues, and alcohol limits, are unlikely to be affected by our exit from the EU’ it added. The RYA said it will play an important role in ‘lobbying the UK Government and European institutions to reduce the regulatory interference with boating. We will continue to engage with officials and politicians in an effort to minimise any impact on recreational boaters and to identify opportunities for improvement. Whatever the UK’s future relationship with Europe, we will work hard to ensure that recreational boating is as unfettered as possible.’ It added ‘During the forthcoming negotiations and transition period, as information becomes available, we will keep members updated and advise them on how their boating activities may be affected. We will also continue to ensure that legislators, regulators and other authorities understand, and take account of, recreational boating activity.’ 10

Poole Harbour Boat Show PREVIEW After being hailed a ‘resounding success’ in previous years, the freeentry Poole Harbour Boat Show is back for a third year and will take place between 19th-21st May. The show, sponsored by Poole boatbuilder, Sunseeker, and organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC), promises to be ‘even bigger and better’, with an additional display area located across the water on Ballast Quay, opposite Town Quay and a free passenger boat service for visitors. It is also a special year, as the show will coincide with ‘The Future of our Seas’, European Maritime Day held at Poole Harbour, which includes an important marine conference, so visitors to the harbour are sure to see it looking at its very best. Motorboat exhibitors include TBS Boats, Whyboats, Offshore Powerboats and Stingray Boats. Besides an array of motorboats, RIBs, and retail stalls selling chandlery, clothing and water-sports accessories, there will be plenty of features and displays. On the Friday night, there will be live music and a firework display. Four tall ships will be moored alongside Town Quay and will be open to the public. On the water there will be demonstrations by the RNLI and Border Force, plus watersport taster sessions, a junior RIB slalom race and flyboarding by Aqua Jetpack. There will also be live music on the Sunseeker Sessions stage, a ‘Royal Navy Village’ on Ballast Quay and the Royal Marines ‘Beating the Retreat’. Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of PHC explains “Last year more than a hundred exhibitors lined the Town Quay and filled Poole Quay Boat Haven. This year we have even more exhibitors, plus some exciting new displays, and are expecting to see more than 20,000 visitors.” Full details and timings are available on the show website.

Jenner’s Basin on the Norfolk Broads has been sold for a reported £200k. The basin had been the subject of a court ruling and the Broads Authority had been battling with the landowner, Roger Wood, for several years regarding planning permission for the development of his seven-acre site and basin at Thorpe Island. According to the authority, he had been developing the site on the River Yare without planning permission for five years and renting out moorings. Mr Wood has now sold the western end of Thorpe Island which includes the basin. The Broads Authority stated “This has been entirely his decision and the Broads Authority has not been involved. We have every sympathy for all those who have been affected by this long running planning dispute and will help ensure that the owners of any boats remaining there are aware of the change of ownership.”

Beaulieu Boat Jumble Under sunny skies the 40th Beaulieu Boat Jumble was held on Sunday 23rd April. For many the boat jumble marks the start of the boating season and an opportunity to search out those most-wanted boating bits, and, of course, it is a chance to pick up a bargain or two. The first Beaulieu Boat Jumble took place in April 1978 and saw over 7,000 visitors browsing 270 stands. This year
over 560 stalls assembled in the beautiful grounds of Beaulieu’s National Motor Museum, offering a whole host of nautical paraphernalia, boats and new and used equipment. The event saw enthusiastic and determined boaters queuing for up to 45 minutes before the opening and its organisers reported a total of 6,600 visitors coming through the gates from far and wide. A revised layout saw over 100

Event features included ‘Ask the experts live’ and the RNLI had their usual stand which was manned by volunteers, fundraising by selling and later auctioning off donated used boating bits and bobs. Next years Beaulieu Boat Jumble will be held on Sunday 29th April 2018.

Harleyford Lagoon opens Friday 21st April saw the opening of the newly completed Lagoon at Harleyford Marina on the River Thames at Marlow. An additional 148 berths have been created in the new basin, which is located alongside the existing marina on the 350acre estate. Harleyford Marina is part of the Harleyford Estate and is located between the two locks, Temple and Hurley. As the champagne flowed, the estate owners, the Folley family, were joined by key Marlow community representatives,
marina staff and berthholders, contractors from Greenford Ltd and representatives from marina construction company, Walcon Marine. The opening saw the arrival of a very special guest, Judith R, an impressive 60ft wooden-built art deco motor yacht built in 1935. At the opening, Judith R proceeded into the basin, through the new 14m wide entrance, with Harleyford Estate’s Chair Lady, Angela Folley standing at the bow and ceremonially cutting the ribbon stretched

After years of planning and hard work we are thrilled to finally have the second lagoon open and it was wonderful to share this day with key stakeholders involved in the works, as well as our valued friends and customers.” Construction began in August 2016, after over 180,000 tonnes of soil was excavated from the site. Marina Manager, Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
Mark Pearce, told Motorboat Owner “The Lagoon is already nearly full, with only 15 berths available. The next stage will be to install two toilet and shower blocks around the Lagoon and a club house on the east bank.” With many berthholders still wintering on the hardstanding or moved temporarily into the new Lagoon, the next phase of the development will see the original marina basin transformed, with the replacement of the existing fixed jetties with floating pontoons. That is my uncle’s Vixen
I have just opened the April issue and when I got to page 2 I spotted a Fairline Vixen just like the one my uncle owned years ago. Then, when I got to page 48 and saw the name and realised not only was it like it, it was the exact boat he owned years ago! He bought it new in 1973/74, just before boat prices rocketed due to the luxury VAT and the oil crisis. It replaced a 16ft outboard-powered Stuart Stevens cabin cruiser. I can’t remember how many years he had Leonora, I would guess maybe 10, before upgrading to a slightly larger Sealine, which he kept until advancing years meant an end to his boating career about 5 years ago. She was moored on a drying mooring in Tenby Harbour. It will be very interesting to follow her restoration and I will send him a link to the magazine. Andrew Lowe Editor replies: Thank you for your email, and what a coincidence. I have always said that boating is a small world and this just proves the point! If your uncle has any further info on the boat, we would of course love to hear it.
Thank you Motorboat Owner
I have only just discovered your online publication which is really excellent. I was on the verge of buying a cruiser equipped with very little knowledge and rather despaired at the lack of printed publications available that covered our sector of the marine market. Thank you very much. David R Austin Editor replies: Welcome aboard David. I hope our recent boat buying series helped you through the process and hope you have a great first season with your new boat. 20

Is there any chance you could combine the four parts of your recent used boat pre survey practical series, as it would be useful to have on hand when checking over a used boat. Also, what an excellent letter regarding the fire extinguisher (April Inbox), this is sure to make a few people stop and check. Terry Corner Editor replies: Thank you for your great suggestion. I’ve just read about your latest project boat and, as you can see from the photo, we have just taken delivery of a Fairline Vixen with a similar story to yours. It was bought new in 1977 from the Fairline factory in Oundle and used about four times on Lake Windemere before being laid up in the owners back garden in Scarborough for over 30 years. I was just casually looking for a Vixen, as we owned one about 20 years ago, and luckily we had seen the owners advert in gumtree the day it was put up for sale. I called the owner and he sent me some photos. It looked reasonable for the price at £975, so the next weekend I went to see it and a deal was done. The only problem was that it was now not possible to get the boat out of the garden the same way it came in. Luckily some new houses had been built at the rear with a tight access road but it would mean getting the boat onto a trailer and backing it down a steep muddy hill with the owners small garden tractor. I rang Chris from Topaz marine, who I have had boats stored with in the past and who also delivers boats, and he agreed to give it a go. With a few heart in the mouth moments, in the end it took us about 5 hrs to get the boat out of the garden and the next day it was deposited on my drive. After giving it a good clean the boat itself is in great shape, including the interior, but the engine has suffered from a damp atmosphere and all the ancillaries have corroded. I have so far refurbished the carbs, replaced the starter, rocker cover, plug leads, plugs, points, coil and alternator. I am hoping to get it started in the next couple of weeks with the aim of putting it in the water in the summer. I look forward to reading your articles over the coming months. Gary Greaves Editor replies: Thank you for your email and pictures. It seems that we have taken on very similar projects, although it sounds like you already have a head start on us. At least I will know who to ask for any tips. Your engine looks to be in similar condition to ours. I hope you manage to get it started. I suspect ours is too far gone, but I should have a better idea within the next few weeks. Perhaps you could keep us updated with your progress. 22

HOW TO
Servicing a Volvo Penta sterndrive
YOU WILL NEED TOOLS
L ove them or hate them, and there
are plenty in each camp, sterndrives offer some great benefits. Increased fuel efficiency is possibly the biggest, but the ability to operate in shallow waters, and even dry out, is not far behind. While the savings in fuel can easily add up to hundreds of pounds over a typical season, they will quickly consume that, and more, in repair bills if they are neglected. The best way to ensure maximum trouble free usage is to service them in accordance with the manufacturers requirements. These might sometimes seem a bit onerous, and expensive, but failure to do

so can lead to some rather large repair bills that will make the servicing costs seem like a bit of a bargain. With so many different drive makes and types on the water, it is difficult to be precise when it comes to servicing costs, but if you have your drive serviced by a manufacturer’s franchised dealer it will cost in the region of £400 per drive. You may be able to save a little by employing an independent to do the work, but the biggest savings can be had by carrying out the basic servicing work yourself. The actual process of drive servicing will vary between makes, and even between models from the same manufacturer, but many of the principles will be the same. On the following pages we will take you through the service of a Volvo Penta DP-D drive. This is identical to the DP-E model and very similar to the DP-B, DP-C and 290DP. Most of the procedures will also be applicable to Volvo drives from the 270 and 280 ranges, as well as the single prop version of the 290 and other SP drive models. A full service usually requires removal of the drive. We didn’t do that this time, although we point out how this is achieved, instead relying on the shortcut of splitting the drive and removing just the top half. We haven’t gone into detail about that procedure here, as we covered it in the February 2014 issue, which is available to download in the back issues section. We would recommend that if you follow this shortcut, you consider removing the drive fully at least every other service. This will allow you to inspect the fixture points for wear, to help ensure that they do not seize up, and to lubricate them where necessary.
I use a mix of OEM and quality aftermarket parts and consumables
When it comes to parts and consumables for this job, the easiest thing to do, to ensure you are getting the best, is to buy from your dealer. There are savings to be made in aftermarket parts, but in some cases the parts in question are too critical to take chances on with items of an unknown quality and origin. An exhaust bellows splitting is not that big a problem, so an aftermarket part here may be acceptable. The same cannot be said for a U-joint bellows. Anodes should also be sourced from a quality supplier, as a poor composition of materials may make them ineffective. If you choose to buy drive oil from any source other than your dealer, ensure that it meets all of the specifications required.

HOW TO IN 44 STEPS
1
As soon as the boat comes out of the water I remove the props and clean off any fouling. Props are taken home until nearer launch date to prevent theft 3
Next comes the removal of the old anodes, starting with the one behind the props. I always replace with new, even if they appear to have good life left in them
2
With the nose cone and rear prop removed, use a block of wood to stop the prop spinning and undo the retaining nut for the front prop 4
Then remove the large bar anode that is mounted on the transom shield. You will need to raise the leg a little for better access
26
May 2017
5
Lastly, some Volvo drives have an additional small triangular anode fitted to the drive fork
7
Now drain the old oil by removing the drain plug and the dipstick. Check the oil for water contamination, evidenced by a emulsified, milky looking oil
6
This is a good time to check the prop shaft and trim ram seals for evidence of oil leaks. If found, further work will be needed beyond a basic service 8
The drain plug is magnetic, so check for any metal fragments stuck to it. If water or metal particles are found, further work may be needed beyond a basic service

PRACTICAL
9
10
To remove the drive you need to remove the locking bolts on either side that hold the mounting spindles in place. The drive should be supported under the skeg with blocks of wood before starting
You also need to disconnect the power trim rams by removing the split pins and withdrawing the clevis pins
11
12
At the top of the drive you need to undo the two bolts that hold the steering helmet bush in place, remove it by screwing it out and push the steering helmet up and out of the way
Remove the gear selection mechanism’s protective cover. The screws for these are used to remove the bush in step 11
28
May 2017
13
14
Undo the large hose clamps that secure the two bellows, and the smaller clamp for the water intake hose and slide them off the drive
You now need to undo the gear cable mount, disconnect the cable end from underneath the cover you have just removed, and remove the cable
15
16
Now you need to remove the mounting spindles. These are designed to be removed outwards with a slide hammer, but can also be carefully knocked inwards with a drift*
The drive can now be withdrawn. This year I just removed the upper gear unit (see Feb 14 issue), which allowed access to change the U joint bellows
*If knocking inwards, ensure the steering is turned fully the opposite way to allow room for the spindle to be removed without coming into contact with the steering yoke Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
29
PRACTICAL
17
18
With the drive, or upper unit removed, you can undo the remaining hose clamps on the two bellows, remove them and discard
A new exhaust bellows is now fixed to the transom shield, noting from the instructions the right orientation of the hose clamp
19
20
Give the drive shaft a light greasing before installing the new U-joint bellows. Again note the right positioning for the hose clamp tightening mechanism
An original Volvo U-joint bellows must be installed the correct way round, indicated by the word ‘UP’ embossed into the top
30
May 2017
21
22
Also note that both bellows have raised lips on the inside at each end. These must seat in the associated groove before fixing in place
Volvo offer a flexible hose clamp tool, but with care, the clamps can be loosened and tightened with normal tools when fixed in the correct position
23
24
Now the drive, or in our case the upper unit, can be refitted. Grease the U joint splines and gently feed it in until it slots home. Tap the mounting spindles in to fix the drive in place
Slide the aft end of both bellows onto the drive until the lip locates in the groove and tighten up both hose clamps
Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
31
PRACTICAL
25
26
If you removed the complete drive, you will also need to reattach the water-intake hose, gear shift cable, trim rams and bolt the mounting spindles in place
Lightly grease the steering helmet bush and replace it, tightening the two bolts to the correct torque. (35Nm for the DP-D drive)
27
28
The drive can now be filled with some new oil. The drain plug should be refitted with a new O ring and the filler plug can be removed
I have a dedicated funnel with a short hose that I use to refill my drives. The hose is inserted into the fill point and the funnel tied up on the bathing platform
32
May 2017
29
30
I can then easily pour in the required 2.7 litres at a decent rate and, most importantly, without spillage
With the drive lowered, the level can be checked and, once correct, the fill plug refitted after the installation of a new washer
31
32
The dipstick can now also be re-installed, again with a new rubber O ring
I then like to give all of the gear linkages and moving parts beneath the gear selector cover a good coating with grease, before replacing the cover
Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
33
PRACTICAL
33
34
You may find other small issues with the drive while servicing. This year I found that one drive had lost its exhaust nonreturn valve
This meant drilling out the old rivets, removing the plate and sourcing a new valve, which cost ÂŁ26 from Volvo and is on top of the costs at the end of this feature
35
36
This was then fixed back in place using monel rivets for corrosion resistance
Another small job I like to do at service time is to thoroughly clean the exposed trim rams of any limescale or other contaminant that might damage the seals
34
May 2017
37
38
Now it is time to give the drives a coat of antifoul paint. I used International Trilux, but it is important to check that whatever you plan to use is suitable for aluminium
The next step is to add new anodes. I use aluminium, as I moor on brackish water, but you can also use zinc for saltwater and magnesium for freshwater
39
40
Having previously lost a gear selector cover, and finding out the price of a new one, I now cable tie mine on as an added precaution. Despite some loose and missing screws since, the covers have remained in place
Clean any old grease from the propshafts and give them a liberal coating of fresh waterproof grease
Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
35
PRACTICAL
41
42
Replace the front prop, ensuring that any thrust washers are also replaced, and tighten up the retaining bolt using a block of wood to prevent the prop spinning
Replace the rear prop, again with plenty of grease on the shaft, and tighten up the propeller cone and then the locking bolt, which should be replaced each time
43
44
The last little job is inside the boat. At the top of the drive, on the steering arm, there is a grease point. Pump a decent amount of grease into this, as it lubricates the top drive bearing
Job done. Two drives, serviced, painted and ready to provide another season of economical cruising
36
May 2017
COST £ Using all genuine Volvo Penta parts each drive will cost around £250 to service. This includes, a set of zinc anodes, both bellows, 2.7 litres of oil and some new O rings and washers. Using a mixture of genuine and non-genuine parts, as I did, this figure drops to around £160. Add in a small tin of Trilux antifoul, which is enough for two drives, and you need an extra £25, or £12.50 per drive, for a total of between £172.50 and £262.50 per drive.
TIME TAKEN To do all of the jobs here on a single drive will take the DIYer around a day. If you are not antifouling the drive, you can knock this down to just over half a day, perhaps a bit longer if you are completely removing the drive. The professionals would service a pair of drives in around six hours, but this would not include an antifoul.

tested Just Teak Cleaner & Brightener If your teak decks are looking a little green PRICE for 2 1-litre bottles around the edges after the winter, now is the circa perfect time to give them a clean. Our production team were faced with this problem onboard their Sealine F37 and with a new product to test, I offered to give them a (very small) hand. Having conducted a full-scale test of all teak cleaners on the market a few years back, I had a pretty good idea where I would spend my money if I were in the market for one of these products. Marine AGlaze Teakcare System not only offers great results, but is also exceptionally priced, when you consider it is used at a 10:1 ratio. Just Teak is a product that wasn’t around when I conducted my previous test, so not only was I going to give it a standalone test, I was also going to put it up against the AGlaze product. Just Teak is, like most other good teak cleaners, a two part product consisting of a cleaner and a brightener. To start, I had to thoroughly wet the area being cleaned and then ensure that it didn’t dry out during the process. The instructions recommend the use of polypropylene scrubbing pads. It took a while before I twigged that this means the likes of a Scotch Brite pad, so I ordered up some fine grade ones to avoid damage to the wood itself. It pays to read the label of most of these types of cleaners, as they can be quite harmful. Just teak specifically mentions skin and eye contact so rubber gloves are essential and some eye protection would also be a good idea. Stage 1 is applied to the teak neat and gently rubbed across the grain of the wood with the scrubbing pad. The grime that came out of the wood was quite surprising and the pad soon became

blocked with it and required a rinse out. Even without trying too hard, the difference after stage 1 was quite stark. After a thorough Value 2/5 rinse with freshwater, I was ready for stage 2. The brightener was Usability 4/5 also applied neat, and also with a soft Scotch Brite pad. Almost Performance 5/5 immediately the teak lightened to a lovely golden colour and the difference when we finished between the treated and untreated wood was night and day. The next day, when the deck had dried out, the results speak for themselves. The area treated is a lovely light gold colour, while next to it the teak is grey and dull. I think I could have achieved even better results with a bit more effort with stage 1, as there was still a little ingrained grime around the edges, but even so I was very happy with the results. Of course, to keep that lovely colour you really need to apply some kind of sealer/protector. We are currently running a test on a variety of these products and will bring you the results later in the year. The next part of the test was to treat the rest of the teak around the now clean part with AGlaze Teakcare System. The result was that you couldn’t tell the difference between the area treated with Just Teak, and that cleaned with AGlaze. So, on performance, Just Teak is a product I could happily recommend. On price though, it just cannot compete with the AGlaze product. For similar money you effectively get ten times the quantity with AGlaze, and when you have a large deck to do, that is going to make all the difference. We were notified, just as we were going to press, that the UK distributor has ceased supply of this product. If you see it on offer at a low price, it would be worth grabbing. In the meantime it should still be available to buy over the internet. Contact: www.greencorpmarine.com
With minimal effort the grey dirty teak was restored back to a golden colour

CLASSIC CRUISERS
a complete guide to the best boats on the used market
Fairline Carrera 24
T
his summer the British boat builder, Fairline, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the launch of its first motorboat in 1967. So this month we decided to take a look back at an era when Fairline was successfully branching into the small, starter boat market, by stepping aboard one of its early sportscruisers, the Carrera 24. By 1979 Fairline had welcomed onboard the talented naval architect, Bernard Olesinski. He had been tasked to design a series of small starter boats with coastal capabilities. Inspired by med-boating,
these boats had to have large sociable, sunseeking cockpits and spacious interiors. To this, Olesinski added his trademark soft-riding, deep V hull shape for performance, and a new breed of Fairline ‘sports’ cruiser was born. His first three designs for Fairline were the Fury 26 in 1978, the Weekend 21 in 1979 and, the Fury 26’s successor, the Sunfury 26 in 1981. Three years later, in January 1984, the Carrera 24 was launched. With a length overall of 27ft, deceptively the Carrera ‘24’ model name actually referred to its 24ft hull length.

Like its Sunfury sister, its wide body provided oodles of space down below, and was almost identical in terms of its four-berth layout. It was also offered with a similar choice of single or twin engines. However, it was striking and sleeker by design, with a very flat foredeck that echoed that of other Fairline models, such as the Targa 33, Corniche 31 and Turbo 36. Its exterior design did evolve slightly, with the very first Carreras having a single long Perspex cabin window along each side, while later models have the characteristic two metal-framed windows.
The Carrera had several rivals during the 80’s, for example from the American brand, Bayliner, there was the wide body Ciera 2550 and the Senator 255 (1987) from British builder, Sealine. Unfortunately Fairline was unable to tell us how many Carreras were built. However, in a 1987 brochure, Fairline referred to the Carrera as ‘one of the best selling’ of its range, so we can only assume that the number is in the hundreds. The Carrera spawned several sportscruiser models during its production, the Sportfury 26 launching in 1986, the

ever-popular Targa 27 and, of course, the baby of the range, the Sprint 21, both launching in 1988. It ceased production in September 1990, at which point Fairline slowly started to move away from the ‘small boat’ market. Today the builder, now known as Fairline Yachts, produces a range of sportscruisers, flybridges and motoryachts of 38-78ft. Owners of older models can purchase new and used Fairline accessories and spares from companies such as HCS Marine, Coastal Rides and Bates Wharf. The
Fairline Owners Club Forum is also a great resource and a good place to seek help and advice. With used prices hovering between £1120k, the Carrera looks to be an affordable package from this well-known builder. We took a closer look at a 1988 version for sale at Val Wyatt Marine. double mid berth, a galley and a separate toilet compartment. However, as you make your way down steeply into the cabin via the offset companionway steps, what will immediately strike you is the width and sense of space and privacy this boat offers. On the port side the compact galley unit has a deep metal sink with a covered two-burner hob and grill set into the top. Integrated into the back of the worktop is a unique moulded GRP section with slots for cups and crockery. Under the worktop is usually a small 12volt fridge, a storage cupboard and drawer. One owner of a 1987 boat had cleverly modified this to incorporate a new L-shape galley unit and, as a result, the worktop top was fitted with a three-burner hob with the sink in front of it. This particular refit saw the fridge relocated into the bottom of the wardrobe opposite to make space for a full gas oven. Be aware that side windows do not open,
so ventilation when cooking in the galley is provided by an extractor side vent, the companionway door and forward hatch. The cosy and very private forward dinette area will seat four people comfortably. This usually has a rectangular table on a slot-in twin pedestal. The table can also be used out in the cockpit and it stows neatly above the mid-cabin berth when not in use. Under the seat

cushions you will find deep storage lockers each side, and the boat’s 100 or 128-litre (modified during build) moulded GRP water tank inside the forward locker. The dinette is usable in its V-berth formation as two singles, which is useful for a family with kids, and when converted to a triangular double, using the infill, it measures 5ft 9in in length. Opposite the galley is a large, half height, wardrobe with slotted Perspex top for glassware storage. The moulded toilet compartment is compact and a little tight for headroom, but is quite well appointed, most importantly it offers a shower. Inside is a moulded sink with shower mixer tap and storage. The Carrera was available with a choice of a sea toilet (with inlet and outlet seacocks found under the mid cabin berth) or a chemical toilet.
Crawl-in comfort. The mid-berth really benefits from the Carrera’s wide 9ft beam
Despite being a crawl-in arrangement, the double mid-berth is a decent size. It is both comfortable and quite accessible when compared to similar-sized sportcruisers with a mid-berth. With a central curtained opening between the toilet and companionway stairs, the berth stretches thwartships under the raised helm position, and while it is quite ‘cuddly’ in terms of width, at 3ft 8in, it is extraordinarily long at 6ft 9in, with sitting headroom. At the head of the berth is an open hanging locker and there is a long, thin opening window into the cockpit to provide ventilation. The majority of the main saloon area offers 5ft 10in headroom, reducing to 4ft 9in under the foredeck in the dinette area, which is very impressive for a boat of this size. Most importantly there is standing headroom at the sink and galley unit. Many sportscruisers can be quite dark down below. Be aware that this window is usually Perspex, which is prone to UV damage after years of exposure to the sun. Inspect for crazing and check that the window is not leaking. Stains on the cushions or galley unit below would be evidence of this. Boat’s without this window will have one less potential problem, but these will also be a little gloomier down below. Interior wood finishes available were teak or Afromosia, which is also a hardwood. Check for evidence of leaks from the forward hatch. Another good indicator of leaks, or previous condensation/dampness, is rust staining around the buttonhole upholstery, if fitted. Cockpit and Helm The boat’s moulded bathing platform, and a gap in the transom, make access to the cockpit easy. It is also accessible from alongside via the side decks, but this does involve stepping over a side cockpit guardrail. Ensure that the gas bottle is mounted securely if you are intending to do any coastal work, as it is quite vulnerable being at the bow. There were a few on-deck options available, such as a stainless steel framed windscreen for £695, stainless steel rubbing strake fir £165, a transom shower at £125 and an electric anchor winch priced at £535, all plus VAT. Hull and Handling These boats provide a good level of seakeeping, and you are sure to be impressed with the build quality but, like other short, wide-beam boats, they are prone to an occasional slam in a head sea. Designed by Olesinski and the design team at Fairline, the hull has a deep V forward, with a 16-degree deadrise aft. The boat also has full-length moulded spray deflectors and a pronounced chine knuckle. Give the hull a visual check over for signs of stress cracking and damage from careless handling, or from being driven too hard in rough seas, paying close attention to the underside of the sprayrails
Original two-colour decals can deteriorate but can be easily replaced or removed completely
Unusually the gas is stored in the anchor locker, which could prove vulnerable on coastal foreys
and around the bathing platform. Traditionally the boat was finished in a two-colour stripe above the gunwale, with the Carrera model name inset. Such decals are prone to peeling or fading, note these may have been removed entirely by previous owners. Companies like Boatnames.co.uk will be able to help supply made to measure coloured decals for the Carrera. However, it is worth noting that there might be differences, albeit millimetres, in window placements from boat to boat. Whilst statistically the boat is just about trailable. Realistically, it would be difficult to keep it under the legal maximum weight to tow on the roads once you put any kit, water or fuel on board. When it comes to maneuvering at close quarters, twin or single engine sterndrive configuration may take some mastering, but once done, the Carrera 24 is an easy boat to handle. Carreras fitted with single prop outdrives may suffer from paddle wheel effect, kicking the stern in a particular direction when you engage
48

The Carrera has Olesinski’s highly regarded deep V entry to cut through chop
reverse, which you can often use to your advantage. Engines The Carrera was available with a wide range of engines and drives, mostly Volvo Penta, in petrol or diesel, single and twin configurations. Originally, the Carrera was offered with petrol single or twin Volvo 145’s on 280 outdrives, offering 20-30 knots respectively, single or twin 175’s on 280 drives (25-35 knots) and twin 125’s on 270 drives (28 knots). Diesel options were single or twin Volvo AD30’s offering 12 and 30 knots respectively. Despite the choice, you will find that most early petrol boats tend to be fitted with twin 138hp AQ145’s. Later in the 80’s there were a couple of BMW options available, twin BMW B220 petrols, offering speeds of up to 35 knots and a single BMW D636 TAZ diesels giving 23-27 knots. The latter option saw the fuel capacity reduced to 60 gallons, we presume due to engine weight. These versions are quite rare as BMW closed their marine division in the late 80’s.
Today, despite parts being readily available, BMW marinised engines of this era are often viewed with some scepticism. If you are considering one of these versions, our advice would be to do your research and consider availability of parts. PH Marine based at Val Wyatt Marine on the River Thames is a known supplier of BMW parts in the UK, as well as being an expert on the brand. There is another company in Canada called V12 Engineering that provide refurbished engines and drive legs. BMW powered versions sometimes prove difficult to sell on the used market, and therefore will often carry an appealing, lower price. By 1988 the boat was only available with Volvo options. There were two single petrol options, a 229hp AQ231 (£32,758) and 270hp AQ271 (£33,390). Four twin petrol options were available, 120hp AQ131’s, 146hp 151’s, 167hp 171’s and 205hp AQ205’s. The single engined boats came with a top speed of 22 and 28 knots respectively, while the twins ranged from 28 knots with the 131’s to nearly 40 knots with the 205’s, A 1988 price list states that a ‘duo prop drive is strongly recommended

Petrol installations are common. This ‘88 boat for sale with Val Wyatt is fitted with 120hp AQ131C’s
for single 231 and 271 Volvo petrol engines at a cost of £475 ex VAT’. Diesel options were single or twin 130hp Volvo Penta AD31’s, priced respectively at £35,615 and £45,385. Single engine versions offer 10-14 knots, while the twins 28-32 knots. A single 307hp Volvo AQ311 was offered in 1989, with a top speed of over 30 knots. Engine access is via a large hatch in the cockpit floor, which sounds simple enough, but unfortunately the transom seat and lose GRP sunpad infill make it
AQ131C’s were mated to Volvo 275 single prop outdrives. The larger engines came with 290’s
awkward and fairly heavy to lift. Check that gas struts are fitted and functioning, as these are prone to corrosion and may need replacing. The 1988 boat we viewed was fitted with twin Volvo Penta AQ131C’s and, being small units, there was plenty of room to get down into and around the engines. These engines should push the boat along happily at a top speed of approximately 28 knots, and a cruising speed in the low 20’s. You will find the boat’s calorifier fitted on the port side in the engine bay and the batteries and shut offs will usually be along the forward bulkhead. Boats with a single engine will usually have a 125ah domestic and 50ah engine battery, while twins will have two 125ah batteries. Fuel shut-offs are usually set into the cockpit coaming on the port side. Old Volvo parts are relatively easy to source via local dealers and Internet auction sites, and consumables are still widely available. If you are considering one of these boats and are mechanically minded, savings could be made by doing

some or all of the engine maintenance yourself. Running a petrol-powered boat on the coast can be expensive, so price and availability of waterside petrol is an important factor to consider. Weekend dashes across the bay needn’t necessarily break the bank, but for more adventurous trips, diesel would be more cost effective. For inland boating, the quieter and less smelly petrol powered boats make a great deal of sense, with some petrol versions reputedly using less than a gallon an hour at river speeds. Re-engining is quite common in this model. Most installations tend to be petrol to diesel, or a single petrol is replaced with a modern petrol. We are aware of a 1987 example that was re-engined with twin 130hp Volvo Penta D3 diesels. This particular boat offered a top speed of 31 knots, a cruising speed of 22 knots and an
estimated fuel consumption of 30 litres per hour at cruising speed. Another was reengined with twin 105hp TAMD22 diesels, replacing Volvo Penta AQ171 petrols, giving a top speed of approximately 25 knots. Finally, a single 170hp Volvo Penta KAD32 diesel engine is a popular and excellent ‘fit’ for the Carrera. As a result we have known instances of twin petrols being replaced, and transoms modified, for this particular configuration. Conclusion The Carrera deserves to be called a ‘modern classic’. It is an affordable buy, and an ideal first-time buy for a family or couple from a well-regarded British builder. Buy well, and it could prove to be a cheap boat to run, as well as being easy and affordable to maintain, especially if you are prepared to get your hands dirty.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

PROJECT BOAT
PROJECT Fairline Vixen
A
lthough we have had Leonora, our project Fairline Vixen, in our possession all over winter, we hadn’t got started on it. In fact, we hadn’t even really looked at it again after getting it home. I love working on a project as much as anyone, but I am not going to work outside when it’s cold, wet, foggy, icy or miserable. That means that we have genuinely not looked at what we have bought, and exactly what work it is going to need, until this month. When we bought the boat we were told that the Volvo AQ151B engine was seized, so I thought the first thing I should do is to confirm that, and inspect the other expensive mechanical parts while I am at
it. The engine itself is a mess of powdered corrosion products. At first glance it looks like a hopeless case, and I suspect there is every chance that this will be confirmed in due course. With a socket on the crankshaft bolt and an extension arm on the socket, I tried to turn the engine over, gently at first, but then with increasing effort. The crankshaft did not budge, confirming that it is indeed seized. This in itself may not be the end for this engine. There are different levels of seized and we might yet get lucky. The next step was to whip the spark plugs out and see what I could learn about the internals. The plugs themselves were not corroded, in fact they had a nice

oily coating to them. Unfortunately they all had, to different degrees, some kind of fluffy mould growing on the tips. This is not something you see every day and I have no idea what it means. I then had an opportunity to get one of my, so far, unused Christmas presents out, a small digital endoscope. I poked the camera down each spark plug hole and had a look around inside the cylinders. There was not
much to see on the two cylinders that were near the top of their stroke, but in the other two I could see a small amount of corrosion on the cylinder walls and some kind of build up on the piston crowns. So far, not too bad, I was expecting worse. I squirted some oil down each cylinder, replaced the plugs and moved on. Looking externally at the condition of the twin carbs, I thought these might be
“Is the engine seized? Would it turn over? We were about to find out.”

Although the engine appears seized, the sump oil is in surprisingly good, clean condition
worth a closer inspection, especially as I was unable to move the throttle linkage. The cover and air filters came off easily enough and I was greeted by the sight of an interesting white residue that extended down into the throttles, and also coated the butterfly valve. The carbs are clearly going to need a strip down and rebuild if this engine is ever going to run again. I couldn’t get at the starter motor on my last visit, but the alternator is also seized solid so I suspect that it is unlikely that the starter is going to be free of problems. Interestingly, the coolant and oil inside the engine appear to be in good condition, so
there is a slither of hope that things are not as bad as they appear on the outside. While I was in a mechanical frame of mind, I decided to check the other expensive piece of machinery, the sterndrive. The retrofitted 1986 290A fitted to the vixen appears, externally at least, to be in reasonable condition. This is perhaps due to a lifetime spent in fresh water, at least its early life, before being abandoned on dry land. Both of these facts should at least lessen the problems caused by the completely rotten driveshaft bellows that were literally crumbling in my hand. This will have filled with water when we

undertook our short delivery trip, but I am hoping that when the boat was last in the water proper, the bellows were in good order so any damage caused should be superficial. I have also noted that the cooling water inlet pipe connection has completely corroded away. The oil inside the drive looks, at least on the dipstick, to be clean. I will drain the oil next to check for any water. Although the gear shift initially appeared seized, I disconnected the linkage and was pleased to confirm that the drive itself goes into and out of both forward and reverse easily and smoothly. At least a seized cable will be an inexpensive job to fix. So what next? The first job is to remove the drive, and I have already started on that process. I’ll get it home and into my
garage where I can pressure test it and see what needs doing. Then I am going to get the engine out. Again, this will be taken home where I can work on it more easily and I’ll start by taking the head off. I have a sneaking suspicion that the engine is beyond help, so I have started to think

I might need, I have already taken the first step down this route, just in case. I know that most people opt for the 2.5 litre Transit engine, but I had the opportunity to acquire an old Ford Escort Estate that was fitted with the 1.8 litre Enduro engine. Not only was this free of charge, it was also the 90hp turbocharged and intercooled version. Whether 90hp will be enough remains to be seen, but I am hoping the extra torque might make up for the lack of HP, and that it might perform as well as the original 120hp petrol versions. If not, I shall investigate a little fine tuning, as I understand there is more power to be had from the Enduro. All this depends on the fate of the original engine of course, as I would rather stick with the 146hp petrol,

“The interior is mostly original and in reasonable condition” even if it means higher fuel bills. Elsewhere, the boat has the usual snag list of things found on boats that have been unused and neglected. The interior is not too bad, although could still benefit from upgrading, but the exterior has seen its fair share of knocks and scrapes and will need some gelcoat work, and possibly a repaint. The electrics will need completely replacing and the gas, fuel and

water systems will also need some serious work to bring them up to scratch. With no electric onboard, I have so far been unable to test items such as the hydraulic drive trim, so that will need adding to the list of things to check/fix. Once we know where we are going with the mechanicals, we can start to think about the cosmetics, although that didn’t stop us from buying a new steering wheel at the recent Beaulieu Boat Jumble, to replace the rotten wooden original. One thing is for sure, this is not going to be the quick job we experienced with our first project. Wheels for inflatable tender
Q
I would like to add some wheels to my 2.7-metre RIB tender so that I can pull it up beaches and slipways without damage. There seems to be a few different types and wondered which ones would be best?
A I have had the Waveline style of dinghy
wheels on the last two of my RIB tenders and have been very happy with them. They are easy to fit, affordably priced, unobtrusive and the reasonably fat wheels mean they are quite good on loose sand and shingle. My only reservation is that if you carelessly hit something like a kerb at any speed you could rip them off the transom, as they are only fixed with screws, but this is likely to be the same with most types and could be overcome by bolting them through the transom. For beach use and concrete slipways etc they have proved great, and mine have remained firmly attached over a number of years.
Petrol-powered Eberspacher heaters
Q I have seen petrol powered Eberspacher heaters, and wondered if I could fit one of them into my petrol powered boat?
A You are not permitted to fit a petrol heater into a petrol boat, but you can fit a diesel heater into a petrol boat if you adhere to the following recommendations: 1. Do not fit the heater or exhaust in an engine room or tank space. Or any other space where flammable fumes are, or could be, present. 2. Do not take air for combustion from any area or space where flammable vapours could be present. 3. Intake air for heating must be taken from within the living accommodation (this does not include the cockpit unless outboard engines are fitted). 4. A separate diesel tank must be fitted, securely fastened and clearly labelled DIESEL. If the boat is an inland waterways vessel, the heater’s diesel tank must have a deck filler clearly marked DIESEL and a breather system. 58

Solent Mackerel fishing
Q I keep being told how easy it is to catch
Mackerel so I’d like to give it a go this year. I am based in the Solent, do I need to venture further, or are there fish to be found here? What is the best time of year to catch them, what kit do I need and are there any special tips?
A There certainly are Mackerel in the Solent, I often see them on the surface
chasing small bait fish, although I believe that just outside, either out towards the Needles in the west, or past the forts in the east is best. You really don’t need anything special in the way of kit. A cheap rod and reel is good, but they also can be easily caught on a hand line. Rig the 15-20lb line with a weight of around 1lb on the end, fixed with a swivel, and anything up to six feathers/lures up the line. The lures can be bought for pennies, so try a few different types. The best method is to troll at around 2-3 knots, varying the depth at which you are fishing, until you find a shoal. A paravane is often considered better than a weight if you are trolling, as it helps keep the lures down at the right depth. If you know of a good spot, you can also motor up tide, and drift over them. Mackerel tend to like rocky outcrops, sand banks and man made structures, basically anywhere where they will find an abundance of small fish to feed on. Once you find them, you will soon catch all you can eat. As Mackerel is best enjoyed as fresh as possible don’t catch too many in each sitting, in fact if you use just a couple of feathers/lures you might get to enjoy the fishing for a bit longer. The peak season for Mackerel is in the summer, but in the south it is possible to catch them all year round, although they tend to be further offshore in the colder months.

Maneuvering a single shaftdrive
Q At the end of last
season I sold my speedboat and replaced it with a Mitchell 31 powered by a single diesel engine. I have only been out on it a couple of times, but what is very apparent is that I cannot seem to maneuver the boat at slow speed. My old outboard powered boat was very maneuverable, but the rudder on the Mitchell seems to have little effect when I am at close quarters, although it is fine when at speed. I tried to carry out a ‘three point turn’ in the marina last week and spent ages going back and forth without actually changing direction! What am I doing wrong?
A The only thing you may be doing wrong, is thinking it will act like your
previous boat. You have to remember that on a single engine shaft drive boat, the rudder will have almost zero affect in reverse until you have a decent flow of water over it. In the tight confines of a marina, it is often difficult to create that situation. Think of reverse as something that will mostly take the boat straight backwards, to allow you more space to go forward where the rudder will have better effect due to prop wash, as well as forward motion. You will also need to use a decent burst of power going forward, to get the rudder to bite as quickly as possible. Most single shaft drives also deliver a kick, one way or the other, when reverse gear is engaged. Find out which way your boat goes and use it to your advantage. If you try and fight it, you may end up just cancelling out any turning effect of the forward part of your maneuver, which may be what happened last week. Also, you need to work with the elements, when you have little directional control. If there is a breeze, or a current, it can easily be enough to overcome any small directional changes you manage to make. It would almost certainly be useful for you to spend a day onboard your boat with an RYA instructor who can show you the techniques for handling a single shaft drive boat, but if you want the ultimate aid to close quarters though, fit a bowthruster. It won’t be a cheap modification, but trust me, you will think it is money well spent. 60

Repair or replace trim rams
Q The trim rams on my Volvo DuoProp drive are
leaking hydraulic oil. The rams look badly pitted and I suspect this is what has damaged the seals. What are my options for repair, rather than replace?
A Assuming that the cylinder itself is still in good
condition, you can have the rams re-coated, but they require a hard coating, which is a bit more specialized than a soft re-chroming. I had mine hard-coated , and then ground down to the correct diameters. The cost of doing this, plus the seal kit that you will also need, starts to add up, not to mention the time and hassle, so you might want to consider ordering a replacement ram, complete with seals and new end cap, from Seabridge Marine.

a few marinas for leisure boaters on the Severn Estuary. It offers good shelter and modern facilities, plus there is a town, a good choice of restaurants and plenty of large food supermarkets closeby. It is a useful tidal stepping-stone for passages up the River Avon to Bristol, or up the River Severn to Sharpness. The marina is just 8.5 nautical miles by water to Bristol, a journey by public transport that will take just over 30 minutes. The town of Portishead was established in Roman times at the southwestern end
of a natural drying tidal pill, or creek. Its name derives from the ‘port at the head of the river’ and Portishead grew as a community reliant on fishing. However, by the 19th century the neighbouring busy Bristol City and Avonmouth docks were stretched to capacity, so builders seized the opportunity to develop Portishead’s tidal creek into a dock. The inlet was excavated and a long harbour wall, or wharf, was constructed along its north side, still seen today. The docks opened in 1879 and soon were receiving trading ships carrying

Years later the local coal and phosphorus industries moved in, and huge power stations flanked the waterfront on both sides of the dock, with smoking chimneys that could be seen from miles around. As well of being a place of great industry, Portishead had also become something of a seaside resort. Holidaymakers and daytrippers would arrive aboard steamers, disembarking at Portishead Pier, to take in the scenery or take a dip in the openair pool (heated by the local phosphorus

Due to rising oil costs, by the late 20th century the power industries based at the Portishead Dock gradually fizzled out and vanished and, after a period of demolition and decommissioning, the dock was left dormant and surrounded by baron wasteland. The site was ripe for redevelopment and, to the tune of ÂŁ400 million, work began on the site developing housing and a marina complex. Portishead Quays Marina, operated by Quay Marinas, has continued to develop through the years, with a new lock opening in May 2001 and a hardstanding area added in 2002. More recently the marina has been extended further into the basin, creating 28 large boat berths (375 berths in total). Today an old white-painted tide mill, now the White Lion Inn, at the start of the High Street, marks where the original

For boats with a draft of 1.5 metres, access to Portishead Quays marina is approximately 4½ hours either side of high water on neap tides, and 3½ hours either side on spring tides. Lock-out times are available on a month-by-month basis via the marinas navigation page, and lock-ins are usually timed 15 minutes after each lock out. On a rising tide, visitors can wait for the lock in a sea area called Portishead Pool. Here you can, if necessary, drop anchor while you wait. It is possible to stay anchored overnight here and dinghy ashore, but it is not generally recommended, as it is quite exposed,

particularly in strong onshore, northerly winds. You’ll also need to be wary of the tidal eddy that forms on an east going tide, commencing 3 hours before HW. When navigating the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary it is important to know that the tide ebbs west for at least 6 hours. This is when it achieves its maximum flow rate, on a spring tide, of up to 5 knots, approximately 2 hours before HW Dover. Also be aware, in wind against tide conditions, a short steep sea will develop in certain areas such as King Road, particularly in northwesterly, northerly and northeasterly wind conditions. With Bristol Port being one of the UK’s major ports, the sea area off Portishead is busy with shipping, therefore it is necessary to keep a listening watch on VHF Channel 12, as this sea area, from the Lower Shoots to the Holm Islands, including the River Avon, is monitored by Bristol VTS. All vessels over 50 tonnes should call ‘Bristol VTS’ at the reporting points shown on the relevant charts. Be advised that VHF Channels 8, 10 and 72 are commonly used for ship and tug communications, so should not be used for leisure boat communication. Bristol Port has produced a really useful leisure guide which is available online. The main shipping channel is well marked with buoys and lights, it is also in regular use by large commercial vessels, often travelling at speeds between 10-

For passages to Portishead this means travelling along the southern edge of the Bristol Deep, navigating buoy-to-buoy using the ‘Inshore Route’. the headland. Beyond this is Portishead’s distinctive facade of the National Nautical School. Further northeast you will see Battery Point Lighthouse. The marina entrance channel and lock faces northeast and is tucked inside the wooded peninsula. After passing closely south of starboard channel marker ‘Firefly’, turn west-southwest towards Portishead Pool until you can see the marina approach channel, this can be identified by a tower capped with a hexagonal roof to starboard. As you approach the marina entrance from the
northeast, approximately 218 degrees, you will see the Old Portishead Pier on your starboard side. This pier covers on a high spring tide, and is marked by several yellow-special marks and a green beacon (isophase light) at the end. Be aware that fisherman cast out into the channel from the end of the pier. There are two vertical fixed port and starboard beacons at the lock entrance (both lit). Initially you will find deepest water closest in to the pier on the starboard side, but as you move closer to the lock this shifts to the middle. Be careful not to stray over to port as there are shallow muddy banks, rocks and stakes underwater here.

Approximate distances in nautical miles from Portishead Quays Marina: • Bristol 8.5 miles • Penarth & Cardiff Bay 18 miles • Sharpness & Gloucester 20 miles • Watchet 30 miles • Swansea 61 miles • Milford Haven 100 miles • Padstow 110 miles Ascents up to 8 metres. The lock looking inland, with the Lock/Marina Office on the port side.
The lock is controlled by traffic lights, which can be seen on the port side ahead of the lock control (also the Marina Office) building. Visitors will need to call the marina using callsign ‘Portishead Quays Marina’ on VHF channel 80, or telephone the marina office 01275 841941 (24 hours) upon arrival, to request a lock-in and a berth. The lock operatives look for a depth of 6 metres over the sill outside and usually have an outbound lock readied prior to the first inbound opening, so always be aware of traffic exiting the lock. Enter once the lights are green, but keep monitoring channel 80, as larger vessels may be asked to enter first. The lock, measuring 40 metres in length and 9 metres in width, has two floating pontoons either side. Boats
Transport
The X3 and X4 bus routes, operated by First West, go to Bristol. The X3 is the most convenient with a bus stop at the marina in Newfoundland Way and in Harbour Road. If you are in Portishead town, you can catch the X4 at the bus stop in Combe Road. Both buses run approximately every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays and Bank Holidays, and the journey time to Bristol City Centre is approximately 35 minutes. You can pick up bus timetables and bike route maps from the Portishead Library. You can rent a car from Enterprise (01275 846916) in Old Mill Road. Bristol International Airport offers UK and European flights and is 30 minutes by car.

must secure themselves for the ascent, which could be up to 8 metres and takes approximately 15 minutes. Be aware, when the tide is dropping boats may be directed to the pontoon on the port side of the lock, as the lock has deeper water on this side. Rafting will be advised at busy times. During the ascent, marina staff will usually visit inbound visiting boats to provide directions to a berth. Boats transiting the lock can usually take advantage of a hot cup of tea/coffee and a bacon buttie from the food kiosk on the quayside, Captain’s Cabin (note there are steps on the port side and ladders to starboard). The speed limit within the marina basin is 4 knots. The lock operates a free flow. However, due to the strong tidal current, entry/exit is often restricted. Again speak with the lock on your approach, or prior to leaving your berth, and obey the traffic lights. Be aware, when it comes to locking out, you will need to book a locking time in advance. You will need to monitor VHF channel 80 and contact the marina again once you are in the fairway. Tide times are displayed daily on a chalkboard on the side of the marina office building.
Where to moor
The marina, which occupies the port side of the basin, is made up of two separate networks of pontoons, each with facilities
There is a path around the marina basin with pretty grassy park areas at the south west end
and a coded access ramp. Pontoons A to J occupy the first section of marina (note E pontoon is around the back of this section) and K to R lie further west. Visitors may be directed to hammerheads, or to vacant berths within the marina. The overnight rate for visitors is charged at ÂŁ2.80 per metre, and visitors will be given pontoon and facilities access codes, which are changed regularly. There are toilets, showers and a laundry (with a book exchange) located on the ground floor of the marina office building, and also in Halls & Woodhouse building close to the hoist. The latter has a bathroom cubicle with a full size bathtub. There is free WiFi available throughout the marina, with a code available from the marina office. We would also recommend collecting the latest marina guide, which is extremely useful and includes tide times. It is also available online. The marina is

Also, being part of the Quay Marinas group, Portishead Quays berthholders can take advantage of a reciprocal free berthing arrangement at other Quay Marinas, such as Penarth Quays in Cardiff Bay. The town is at the southwest end of the marina and is roughly a 15-minute walk away. To get there you’ll need to follow the marina waterfront to Harbour Road, and cross over to the pedestrianised precinct, which includes Waitrose and the library. This leads out onto Station Road which, at the roundabout, leads south into the shopping High Street. The town centre has a eclectic mix of shops, several banks and chemists, cafes and restaurants. There is also a sprawling retail area to the east of town with stores such as New Look, Homebase, Argos and several large supermarket chains.
Where to eat & drink
You needn’t stroll far for good food and watering holes at the marina. Halls & Woodhouse (01275 848685), or H&W, is a unique bar and restaurant housed in a two-storey building built out of shipping containers. Located directly behind the boat hoist area, it serves pub favourites

Where to fill up
Portishead Quays has a fuel pontoon (Petrol and Diesel) on Pier A, just inside the lock. The diesel pump is self-service and accessible 24hrs, but you will need to radio up on VHF channel 80 to check availability. An attendant will assist with petrol pump operation.
Slipway
The marina has a gated slipway next to the hoist, and use of this is by arrangement through the Marina Office. The concrete slipway has a steep gradient and a 5-metre drop off at the end. Launching vehicles must be a 4x4 and boats exceeding 1-tonne must be launched by the marina tractor. Qualifying vessels for self-launch will be charged £23.50 for use of the slip and lock in and out, plus parking in the Boatyard for vehicle and trailer. If the tractor is used the charge is £32.50 plus a locking fee of £23.75. Berthing is charged at £2.80 per metre per night.
Further afield?
With all states tidal access, Penarth Quays Marina is a popular lunchtime or weekend jaunt from Portishead. Bristol’s locked historic harbour is a 7-mile passage up the River Avon and visitor berthing is available in the Floating Harbour or Bristol Marina. 30 nautical miles west is Watchet, a quaint coastal Somerset town with a 240-berth marina with tidal gate. Be aware that Watchet marina is prone to silting, so we would recommend calling ahead for instructions.

La Marina (01275 842266) is a popular Italian restaurant overlooking the lock entrance, it serves up many superb traditional dishes as well as a Sunday Roast and takeaway fish and chips. At the southwest end of the marina there is a choice of two more Italian restaurants, Aqua (01275 842590) and Bottelinos (01275 846443). If you are looking for a spot of lunch
or an evening meal,we can recommend visiting The Royal Inn (01275 843944), in Pier Road. Dating back to 1830, its garden is a great place to soak up the afternoon sunshine with a drink and, being set high on the peninsula, the garden offers panoramic views out across the estuary, Severn Bridge and, on clear days, over to Wales. To get there, follow the scenic waterfront, passing the Old Pier and Lifeboat Station, and climb Pier Steps. There are more restaurants in town along the High Street. For example, if you like Spanish tapas, Venga (01275 814391) is recommended, or if you are craving Indian food head to Ghandi Tandoori (01275 818515) at the southern end of High Street. Finally we would recommend The Windmill Inn (01275 818483) in Nore Road with its original round stone tower dating back to the 1830’s. It is a lovely coastal pub, with superb views over the estuary towards Wales, and serves local ale, Sunday roasts and many pub favourites. It is also a great place to enjoy the sun setting. Places to visit
Visit England
We can recommend a walk out to the waterfront to see the old pier and the new Portishead Lifeboat Station and slipway. If you are feeling fit, Portishead Esplanade is approximately a 30-minute (1.2 mile) walk from the marina lock, via Pier Road, where Woodlands Road provides a scenic coastal detour. At the north end of the Esplanade at Battery Point is the Portishead Open Air Swimming Pool and Café Lido. Opened in 1962, the 33-metre pool has recently undergone a facelift and is environmentally heated to 28 degrees. Entry is £5 for adults and £3.50 for children aged 2-15 and over 60’s. To the west of the open air pool, on a grassy open space, is Battery Point
with its lighthouse. Along the esplanade you will also find a boating lake and childrens playground. If you continue walking alongside Sugar Loaf Beach, following Nore Road, you will find the aforementioned Windmill Inn and, for golf fans, directly next door to the pub is the 9-hole and 18-hole Portishead Golf Course (01454 313029). If you have youngsters onboard, the marina has a dedicated Kids Crabbing Pontoon located next to the new Tingdene Boat Sales office. On rainy days there is also Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, at the southwest end of the marina in Harbour Road, with its indoor heated swimming pool and gym. MBO

Overheat Alarm
Most boat engines are equipped with a high temperature alarm, but these are usually connected to the cooling system, which triggers when the situation has reached a critical point. A better way to monitor temperature is via the exhaust, which heats faster during an overheat. Boaty Tech’s new exhaust alarm is a cost effective way to add this useful feature. The alert is user adjustable and it comes with a remotely positioned 95dB alarm, but can also be connected to an external siren of up to 10A.

think that it is fair to say that, if you want almost any style or size of boat, at almost any budget (Russian oligarchs aside), boat builder Jeanneau will have something suitable. You have the Cap Camarat range at one end of the spectrum, and the clever and luxurious Prestige models at the other. In between you have the Merry Fishers, the NC’s, the Velascos and the Leaders. A quick tot-up shows that you have an incredible choice of 46 models to choose from, and that doesn’t include those with rag and stick or the open/wheelhouse versions of some of the models. Jeanneau, however, are not prepared to sit back and reap the rewards of this wide array of offerings. They continuously update and improve existing
models, as well as launch a host of new ones every single year. 2017 is no exception, and we have just returned from an event organized by Jeanneau to show off their latest boats. The peach of the 2017 crop, at least of the Jeanneau branded boats, was the Leader 33. If your budget stretches a little further, I would highly recommend a look at the new Prestige 680S. The 2017 launch of two new Leaders

“The Leader 33 is the peach of Jeanneau’s 2017 new launches”
The 33 has a very sociable cockpit and a clever navigator’s seat that reverses and drops down
suddenly puts their previous entry level Leader, the 36, slap bang in the middle of a five boat range. The other new model was the 30, and we will be reviewing that boat later in the year. The Leader 33 is available in two versions, an open sportscruiser or hard top. We are testing the arguably more northern European friendly version with the GRP lid, and have to say that on first glance it is a very good looking boat. It is easy to make a small, hard top boat appear dumpy and top heavy, in the attempt to get good headroom in a shortish hull, but Jeanneau are masters at pulling this off and the 33 appears to have perfectly balanced proportions and nice flowing lines. In the cabin, Jeanneau have reproduced the clever dividing door first featured on the Leader 36. With the door open, the open plan bow consists of a short double berth with an L-shaped saloon seating area Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
directly aft. The double berth is too short in this guise to be used, but can be easily extended by removing the settee cushion and sliding out the base of the bunk over the space where the bench seat once was. The base cushion of the bench seat, together with a second smaller infill, now becomes part of the mattress to provide a bunk that is a full 6ft 5in in length and 5ft in width. Obviously this boat is smaller than the 36, so compromises have been
The Leader 33 is also available in an open version
79

made. As a result, the saloon area aft of the berth is quite compact, even with the bed pushed back, and standing floor space with the bed fully extended and the door closed, to provide the full privacy of a separate forward cabin, is rather limited, with around 20 inches between the end of the bunk and the dividing door. Having said that, the ability to close the forward part of the boat off completely does provide a very generously sized bow cabin for a boat of this size and you do get up to 6ft 4in of standing headroom. In daytime mode, a table, that is stored in a floor locker just aft of the seating, can be installed to provide a lower, and private, dinette/seating area. Storage in this part of the boat is quite good, with six eye-level cabinets, three down each side, one eye-level open locker
on the port side, a small hanging locker on the starboard side, and various lockers and cubbyholes beneath the saloon seating and double berth. Like on the 36, some of the galley storage is placed forward of the dividing door, and hence is effectively in the forward cabin. This comprises a small cutlery drawer and a single cupboard with bottle holders, so at least you won’t need to venture far for that bottle of wine and corkscrew of an evening. The forward section of the boat is nice and light, thanks to two high level windows,
80
May 2017
two hull windows lower down, a skylight above the saloon area and an overhead hatch. Ventilation is provided by the latter, together with an opening port within the port side hull window. Lighting at night is provided by hidden LEDs within slits in the headlining, as well as LED lighting all around the shelf unit above the eye-level cupboards down both sides of the cabin. The dividing door is a two-part slider and, when fully open, sits neatly, and is locked in place, behind the bulkhead between the forward cabin and toilet compartment, so is completely unobtrusive. You might think on first impressions that this arrangement would rattle when at sea but, if it does, I didn’t hear any evidence of that when driving the boat. Aft of the dividing door is a lobbyGalley storage is plentiful, and the layout and cum-galley area. The galley is to port and features make for a practical and usable space provides a double burner hob, a large sink and a reasonable amount of work surface. The large cupboard beneath the hob is completely filled with the boat’s fridge, but you still have another cupboard under the sink, which is half filled with a rubbish bin. You also get an all-important bottle store low down, and three spacious cupboards above the work top. There are also a couple of lockers in the floor that, although filled with boat equipment, have some space for storage, and another locker in the bottom of the companionway steps. All of this, together with the cupboards in the saloon area, means you should not be short of places for your galley supplies and equipment. The galley delivers well over 6ft headroom, and a skylight overhead, combined with two in-hull windows, the lower with built in opening porthole, bathe the working space in natural daylight. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Opposite the galley is the boat’s toilet compartment. This provides 6ft 4in of headroom and is divided up to provide a separate toilet compartment, which also contains the toilet. Although the compartment as a whole is quite spacious, with plenty of room to do what’s necessary, the division does mean it is quite tight when opening and closing doors, particularly the shower door. It’s a nice feature but, perhaps on a boat of this size, a single spacious compartment might have been better. Two low level windows, one in each compartment, plus one eyelevel across the two, means there is plenty of natural light in here. The lower window in the shower section has an opening port for ventilation and all windows have blinds for privacy. Elsewhere you get a sink, a good sized cupboard below, another cupboard in the shower compartment and a cover for the toilet to allow you to sit down and ablute. Aft of the galley is the door to the boat’s mid cabin. Just inside the door is a small standing area offering 6ft 8in headroom beneath a skylight, with plenty of elbow room for changing. Along the port side there is a two-seater settee with a hinged lid to access the storage compartment beneath. Despite being in the depths of the boat, this cabin is quite light and airy thanks not only to the aforementioned skylight, but also to two windows on the port side and another on the starboard. There is an opening port in one of the port side windows and another into the cockpit. The cabin offers a twin berth configuration with an infill to create a large double that is 6ft 6in long and 5ft wide. As single berths, the bunks are 2ft 2in wide. There is good sitting headroom at the starboard end of the berths, and the
A separate shower cubicle is a nice feature, but is perhaps a step too far in this 33 footer
inboard end of the whole sleeping area lifts on a gas strut to reveal a very useful locker. On the aft bulkhead there is a cavernous half-height hanging locker. Moving up the three steps, through the companionway and into the cockpit you quickly realize that the saloon area down below is very secondary to the boat’s living and lounging space up top. The aft section of the cockpit consists of a large L-shaped seat along the port side and across the transom, arranged around a nice teak table with fold-out leafs that allow everyone, and I think you could probably get up to 8 people sat here, access to somewhere to place a drink or plate. The seats are all quite deep, so not so easy to sit back into, but perfect for lounging or sitting forward

Guest or master, the mid cabin offers two singles, or a large double with the use of an infill
around the table. On the starboard side, behind the helm, there is a small wetbar with a sink. Our test boat had no hob/griddle or fridge. The latter is an option here. The former is not, although with the gas locker located just underneath, I am sure it wouldn’t take much to install one if you wished. In the cockpit sole there are two hatches that lift, with the table still in place, to reveal a pair of large, lazarette style storage compartments. Inside the transom seat there is another large storage compartment that is accessed either from the cockpit, by lifting up the cushion and base, or from the bathing platform via a large opening hatch. The backrest of this seat also folds flat to create a sunpad area, or somewhere to sit on the bathing platform. In fact, the cockpit table can also drop down to provide a sunpad that stretches from the bathing platform all the Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
way to the cabin, if needed. The whole transom seat assembly lifts electrically to provide access to the boat’s huge engine compartment. With the twin D3’s, there is lots of space in the engine room to get around the engines for maintenance and servicing, although ideally some ladder or step arrangement would make descending down into this space much easier, and would also avoid

the temptation to step on parts of the engine. At the helm the skipper gets a nice comfortable seat that swivels and slides and has a bolster for standing or leaning. There is a drop-down flap for the helmsman to stand on, to allow them to poke their head out of the roof. This provides good visibility forwards and is great for close quarters maneuvering and communicating with your deck crew. However, the flap itself was rather flimsy on our test boat, and didn’t feel strong enough. This may be one of those preproduction issues that gets sorted on later boats, but is something to look for. The helm console is well laid out, with room for a decent sized multi-function display, although the top row of engine instruments

Access to the side decks is from the cockpit on the starboard side, with a couple of steps up, or from the bathing platform to port. Whichever way you go, there are numerous grabrails to aid your passage, and over knee height guardrails ensure a feeling of security. The side decks are a good size, at around 7-8 inches wide, and guardrails that lean out slightly provide even more room. The downside to this could be that the guardrails are vulnerable when mooring alongside a wall, if your fenders are poorly positioned. On the foredeck, you can have more sunpad cushions, complete with drinks holders. The flat side decks continue all the Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
way to the bow, where you get a large flat working area. Beneath this is a huge anchor locker with reasonable access. This locker is plenty big enough to store all of your fenders, provided you chose the right size to fit through the access hole, but the locker is, in fact, so deep that retrieving them from the bottom may prove quite difficult. Underway For our first run, the sea was like a millpond, but as is often the case in the Med, the afternoon saw quite different conditions with a force 4-5 chop, so we took the boat out again to experience a more broad range of conditions. Overall the 33 delivers a very competent package and offers a perfect balance of performance and economy. With the D3’s it was no
85
sportsboat, with the Volvo’s taking a while to spool up, and we experienced a decent amount of, what felt like, turbo lag. Having said that, once up and running the 33 cruised effortlessly at 25 knots at around 3400rpm, and has a top speed of a very acceptable 33 knots. The steering is responsive, light and perfectly balanced and the boat turns well in a controlled and safe manner. We did experience some reverberation in fast tight turns, but the boat kept up a decent turn of speed and never felt like it was getting out of shape. In short, the 33 is a very easy boat to drive. Visibility is good with the roof open, but as is the case with hard top boats, a turn to port with the roof closed meant that you were almost blind on the inside of the turn, so you need to have a very good look around first. Close quarters maneuvering was also excellent, the joystick working well when used. We also found that the 33 responded well to split throttle maneuvering too, as well as
The bow offers good crewing facilities, as well as somewhere to relax with a drink
the usual vectored thrust approach used on sterndrives. The helm is comfortable, whether seated or standing, and we also found the navigator’s seat a comfortable place to be when underway. On our second test run, in the lumpy seas, the 33 was still able to achieve a comfortable cruising speed of 25-27 knots, despite the considerable chop, as long as you trimmed it correctly. At slow speeds the boat delivered a wet ride into a head sea, but the closed roof did its job of keeping us dry and the twin wipers did

a great job of maintaining visibility. Some tab was needed to correct wind induced lean when the weather was on the beam, so the optional trim tabs would be a box worth ticking. If you could upgrade further to auto trim tabs, I don’t think you would regret it. Conclusion The Leader 33 packs a lot into a small package. It may be over 34ft overall, but the hull is in fact only 29ft. Despite this you get two separate cabins, some very practical and usable cruising features and a huge sociable cockpit, complete with that UK friendly hardtop. Underway, the 33 feels completely ‘sorted’ as a cruiser. If you want
A 10 metre boat that handles as good as it looks
more sports from your sportsboat, I am sure that the twin V8 option will fulfill your desires. With the diesels you get great cruising performance combined with good economy and, on the water, the 33 appears to be completely free of any real vices.
