THE NEW ART OF THE RAISED BED Keyhole Gardens and Other Ways to Grow More and Water Less
The New Art of the Raised Bed presents an innovative range of raised-bed designs that will suit any garden, large or small. The philosophy of “keyhole gardens” is employed throughout, producing raised gardens that require less watering, utilize kitchen and garden waste to produce their own compost, and use space more efficiently. Includes instructions for building and maintaining 17 different types of raised bed. Includes planting plans that can be applied to all types of raised bed, such as a herb garden and a vegetable garden.
G
ardeners today face a number of challenges that were almost unknown to their predecessors. Environmental concerns are foremost as we attempt to become greener, and constraints on our space and time become greater as more and more people move to urban areas and work longer hours. Furthermore, our expectations of what makes a beautiful garden are being raised, as the world’s media bombards us with images of more and more beautiful and creative gardens.
In the search for solutions, gardeners are constantly sharing, stealing and borrowing ideas, sometimes from one another, and sometimes from entirely unrelated disciplines. From the kitchen gardens of Africa comes the concept of “keyhole gardening,” and The New Art of the Raised Bed looks at how this relatively simple concept can transform the way we grow and garden with the humble raised bed.

ack to School for Grown-Ups is divided into five sections—Monday to Friday—each of which contains four lessons. Each lesson explores a subjectspecific area of knowledge and contains five questions based on “the five Ws”: Who, Why, Where, When, and What. For example, one of the science lessons contains a question titled “Who was Einstein?” From that question several aspects of modern physics can be explored, as well as the life history
and achievements of a great scientist. Each section, or day, concludes with a fun quiz. These are divided into two parts: Knowledge and Understanding. Knowledge questions are designed to test factual recall, while Understanding questions are posed to encourage readers to assess and interpret the information presented in the book. The tests are in a multiple-choice format for the Knowledge section, with open-ended questions for the Understanding half.

O
ver the course of human history, one of our central concerns has always been with our health and wellbeing. A History of Medicine in 50 Objects sets out to examine the many different ways in which we have attempted to maintain our good health and cure our ills by treating the numerous different diseases, injuries, and other misfortunes that afflict us, beginning with our distant prehistoric ancestors and continuing throughout our history and up to the present day.
The history of medicine is a very large and complicated subject, encompassing many different facets of human knowledge and experience, and one way of getting a grip on it is to focus on individual objects that exemplify particular aspects of medical practice and health care. This provides us with a way into the subject, giving us an appreciation of the circumstances of medicine during a particular period that can also be extrapolated to provide a wider perspective on medical history as a whole. We look, for instance, at the bizarre masks worn in the seventeenth century by plague doctors, who were attempting to treat a deadly disease that they knew almost nothing about. This allows us to consider the spread of bubonic plague across Europe in the 32

Medieval and Early Modern period, together with the enormous impact that its deadly progress had on society. Then there is the painting of an anatomy lesson, by Rembrandt, which demonstrates the advances being made in medicine at that time and can also be used to discuss the wider scientific revolution and its impact on our understanding of the human body. The objects covered in the book come in all shapes and sizes, from an X-ray diffraction image of the DNA molecule to the first TB sanatorium in Germany, and from the everyday, like a bottle of aspirin, to the truly extraordinary, such as a prosthetic leg that can be controlled by the mind of its wearer. We look at objects that relate to such important historical figures as Hippocrates and Galen, take examples from Ancient China, India, and Persia to examine different medical traditions and discuss the advances of modern medical science. There are MRI scanners, stethoscopes and eye test charts, together with Sigmund Freud’s couch, Louis Pasteur’s flasks, and a whole range of other objects which, when taken together, illustrate the remarkable and fascinating story of medicine as it has unfolded over the course of thousands of years.

T
he History of Fly Fishing in Fifty Flies recounts the history of a sport that dates back two thousand years, focusing on milestone flies from the first feathered hook to contemporary patterns using cutting edge materials. From the many thousands of fly patterns developed over the centuries, these fifty have been chosen to represent the development not only of the flies themselves, but also of fly fishing techniques—and of rods, lines, and reels. These iconic flies also chart the spread of this addictive sport from its origins on the chalk streams of southern England and the rivers of Scotland to the rest of the globe.
Once limited to trout and salmon, fly-fishing techniques today are used to catch a whole host of fish species, from minnows to marlin, in rivers, lakes, and oceans from the Amazon to the Arctic. Filled with profiles of the key characters, tying tips, photographs and illustrations of the flies, and detailed explanations of the techniques used to fish them, The History of Fly Fishing in Fifty Flies charts the exponential growth and diversification of this fascinating sport.

ONE HUNDRED EVENTS T H AT S H A P E D W O R L D WA R I I One Hundred Events that Shaped World War II looks at 100 landmark moments and explores the ways in which each one had a decisive impact on the course of the conflict. Includes the battles that decided the military outcome of the conflict, and also the social, economic, technological, and political factors that dictated the course of the war. Demonstrates that it was often events away from the battlefield, as well as incidents that were at first seemingly insignificant, that shaped the ultimate outcome of the war.
N
o war or battle has a simple, linear narrative. Each is a collection of disparate events, with many turning points and significant moments along the way. This is especially true of World War II, which spanned many years and continents, and took place in several different theaters. One Hundred Events
that Shaped World War II reflects on the fractured nature of the conflict by selecting 100 moments that were pivotal to its outcome. From the famous to the obscure, and from the large to the small, the origin and impact of each one is explored in detail, with archive photography and specially drawn maps.

Secret Heroes of World War II is an inspiring collection of tales about people who showed great courage and bravery in life-threatening situations behind enemy lines. Includes: “The White Rabbit” (Forest Frederic Edward YeoThomas), who survived torture by the Gestapo; “Garbo” (Juan Pujol Garcia), who tricked the Nazis into believing that the invasion of Normandy was a ploy to distract from the real invasion in the Pas-de-Calais; and “Artemis” (Virginia Hall), who worked with the French Resistance while posing as a correspondent for the New York Post. Illustrated throughout with photographs and detailed maps.

any of the heroes of World War II are well-known, larger-than-life figures. This book does not tell their story. Rather, it is a tribute to some of those equally amazing individuals—some working secretly behind the scenes on the Home Front and others behind enemy lines—who made just as significant a contribution to the wartime story. It sheds new and timely light on 50 of the hitherto unsung heroes and heroines of the world’s greatest ever war.

“ Gives fascinating details about the people who worked behind the lines to interpret aerial photography.” —Library Journal
W
orld War Two from Above retells the fascinating and little-known story of the battle waged by Allied and Axis spies in the skies to obtain accurate aerial intelligence during the Second World War. It features dozens of eye-catching aerial reconnaissance photographs drawn from the archives of all the major fighting powers. The text sheds light on the daring pilots who risked death to shoot these photographs, and the photographic interpreters who pioneered a totally new
science to reveal the secrets they contained. Inspiring, informative, and entertaining special features focus on particularly crucial operations. Examples include: the aerial reconnaissance that led to the aerial assault on the Italian fleet at Taranto; the hunt for the supposedly unsinkable German battleship Bismarck; and the bridge on the River Kwai. The final chapter focuses on Operation Market Garden (the Arnhem parachute attack), the firestorm raids on Tokyo, and the dropping of the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

World War II in Secret tells the hidden stories of the war, from classified weapon programs and top-secret technology to covert operations and clandestine missions. Copiously illustrated with photographs drawn from the archives of all the major Allied and Axis powers. Features chapters on: espionage; technology (radio, radar, and codes); resistance movements and saboteurs; weapon programs (such as the Manhattan Project and Hitler’s Wunderwaffe or “Miracle Weapons”); camouflage and subterfuge; and covert operations.
W
orld War II was a conflict of tanks, ships, and aircraft fought across the globe, from the icy waters of the North Atlantic to the steaming jungles of southeast Asia. It was a war that called for that most basic of battlefield requirements: brute force. However, World War II was also a war of top-secret technology. A conflict that began with Polish horsemen attacking German tanks ended with the dropping of two Atomic bombs.
World War II in Secret is a fascinating exploration of the hidden stories behind the first truly technological war. From Bouncing Bombs to Atomic Bombs, from S.O.E to S.A.S and from radar to Enigma, the book will lift the lid on all aspects of World War II that were crafty, cunning, and covert, explaining the thinking behind their creation and the influence such secret weapons had on the war.

hough the First World War had seen 9.7 million combatants and over 6.7 million civilians killed, this would rise to an 23.6 million military and some 34 million civilian deaths in the second war. Large numbers of combatants were taken prisoner, and while Russians in Germany would have less than a 50% chance of survival, Germans in Britain would have a 99.97% survival rate.
This was a war of numbers, and World War II in Numbers brings statistics into perspective through the use of visual comparisons. Combining detailed descriptions with readily accessible quantitative information, it illuminates the reality of the war, its impact on the individuals involved, its economic and social costs, and its indelible effects on the landscape of Europe and beyond.

Take for example the tulip, whose introduction into Europe from the Ottoman Empire led to it becoming an increasingly valuable trade commodity. The meteoric rise in its value represented history’s first economic bubble, and its subsequent crash was a precursor to the global financial crises that would later grip the globalized world.

he emergence of new technologies in the late 1880s stimulated a revolution in design not seen since the introduction of movable type to Europe in the fifteenth century. What had been known as commercial art became what we now call graphic design, and a new industry was born, fusing technical skill with artistic vision, craft with creativity. These innovations took hold at the turn of the century and continued at an astonishing pace as designers devised new techniques, developed new styles, and discovered new uses and outlets for their work.

RE:TYPE Digital Typefaces Inspired by the Past
R
e:Type is a collection of contemporary digital fonts with origins in the past. Examples include translations of inscriptional, calligraphic, or written letterforms that never existed as type before. Others are direct revivals of metal and wood typefaces. And still others are looser interpretations of older typefaces. Among the fonts are interpretations of classic designs by Nicolas Jenson, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, William Caslon, John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni, Firmin Didot, and other iconic names. Alongside them are typefaces rooted in the work of important, though lesser known, names such as Eudald Pradell, Philippe Grandjean, and Richard Austin. Finally, there are updates and revisions of 20th-century classics like Palatino, Meridien, DIN, Metro, and Neue Haas Grotesk (the original name of Helvetica). The notion of a type revival is more complex than it seems at first glance. The digital type “revivals” that exist today go beyond the straightforward idea of taking a typeface from the pre-digital past and converting it into pixels for use on computers and mobile devices. Some designs are not revivals of typefaces but
60

of letterforms, from inscriptions and calligraphic manuals to letters in posters and bookjackets. Some revivals are aesthetic extensions of 20th-century typefaces that have been updated technologically. Others are actually reinterpretations or variations on typefaces from the past necessitated by having to make types that function in the 21st-century and not in the distant past. Re:Type looks at type “revivals” in this broad manner.

he Evolution of Type examines 100 landmark typefaces from the history of font design, from the type used by Johannes Gutenberg to produce his 42-Line Bible to the latest digital typefaces. A full spread is devoted to each typeface. Its origins and usage are explained, along with details about its long-term impact on the development of typefaces. Key glyphs from each typeface are enlarged and annotated to show the new features that it introduced and emphasize the most important characteristics of its design. A fascinating journey through the history of typefaces, The Evolution of Type also has practical applications: by knowing how, when, and why typefaces developed it is possible to match the right typeface with the right project. 64

T
ypeface combinations don’t always work together naturally. For an experienced designer, the process becomes largely intuitive after years of practice, but even seasoned professionals sometimes struggle to come up with the perfect pairing. It’s often obvious what not to use, but it’s less obvious what you should use when a range of good typefaces can differ in very subtle ways. Type Teams is the ultimate guide for anyone wishing to get to grips with the best techniques for combining individual

ime spent sketching can be glorious as the chatter and demands of everyday life take a temporary back seat. How to Sketch Trees and Plants encourages readers to look afresh, providing a complete beginner’s guide to producing dynamic, spontaneous images of the natural world around us.
Using trees and plants as a framework for a series of sketched investigations, this uniquely presented book and sketchbook offers new ways of slowing the world down and, ultimately, keeping our curiosity fresh. 210 x 145 mm, 81/4 x 53/4 in, 128 pages
The introduction explains the ethos of the book and features examples from art history of the importance of sketching from nature. The Basics section runs through the fundamentals of sketching such as line, tone and composition. Each ends with exercises (called Your Turn) in which readers are encouraged to practice for themselves what they’ve just learnt. The accompanying sketchbook provides an easy opportunity to do this. One issue with many how-to-draw books is that they demonstrate only one way of drawing (i.e. that of the author). The next section, “Multiples,” includes a number of different artists’ responses to the same subject (a piece of fruit, a tree in the garden etc.). This underlines the central idea that readers can and should discover their own way(s) of working. 80

T H E H I S TO RY O F P H OTO G R A P H Y IN 50 CAMERAS The History of Photography in 50 Cameras explores the 180-year story of perhaps the most widely used device ever built. Covers cameras of all forms, from the first “mousetrap” camera of 1835 to the latest camera-phone. Reveals the origins and development of each model, and traces the stories of the photographers who used them. Lavishly illustrated with photographs of all the camera models, as well as iconic images made with them by world-renowned photographers.
F
rom the moment of photography’s introduction in 1839, it changed the way the people saw the world and everything in it. The camera was the tool that brought new chemistry and optics together, and as photographic chemistry improved and new materials developed, so designs changed. More importantly, as the demand grew from ordinary people, so manufacturers changed how they made cameras. For much of the camera’s history it was a mechanical device. By the 1950s, electrical control of shutters and
exposure requiring a battery had increasingly became the norm. The arrival of commercially viable digital cameras, which recorded an image on a CCD sensor rather than film from the early 1980s, transformed the camera to a fully electronic device. The History of Photography in 50 Cameras relates this story by selecting fifty landmark cameras and analyzing them in chronological order. The origin and development of each model is described in detail, along with its impact on both the art and science of photography.

THE ART OF THE CYCLING JERSEY Iconic Cycle Wear Past and Present
C
ycling jerseys represent many different things. For a cyclist they must be functional. For team sponsors they must stand out, and in doing so they must increase brand awareness. For cycling fans they help pick out their favorites or a race or competition leader. Jerseys show who is a world or a national champion. And in some races, jerseys tell of a competitor’s nationality.
But cycling jerseys have evolved into something bigger than all those things. Some jerseys are iconic, others stylish, and some are beautiful. They can evoke good times or bad times, success or failure. Above all, jerseys mark the great occasions of cycling, they speak of its history, its personalities and its style. And all jerseys have an element of art in their design. The Art of the Cycling Jersey celebrates the cycling jersey in all its forms. With stunning pictures and snatches of history, this is the story of the cycling jersey told in 192 gorgeous pages. From the first simple garments that early cyclists raced in, to the technology-laden jerseys top riders use today. This book looks at the iconic jerseys associated with great riders and with great teams, the jerseys of champions and nations, and the jerseys that leaders wear in the most famous races.

THE BIKE DECONSTRUCTED A Grand Tour of the Modern Bicycle
D
o you know the difference between a head tube and a headset? Can you tell whether a frame is made from steel or carbon fiber? Do you know how a derailleur works and why it revolutionized bike design? If not, this is the perfect guide for you. The Bike Deconstructed celebrates bicycle design by looking at its individual components, large and small. Their historical roots are explored, key features identified and principal uses (and sometimes misuses) revealed. Along the way, you’ll learn how they are made, how they function, and why we need so many different variations. The book includes detailed text, eye-catching photographs, and a wide range of diagrams. Revealing the evolution of each part, from its origins to the latest technology, the bicycle is literally and figuratively dismantled, with chapters on seven key areas: Materials, Frameset, Wheels, Drivetrain, Brakes, Contact Points, and Accessories.

T H E H I S TO RY O F C Y C L I N G IN FIFTY BIKES The History of Cycling in Fifty Bikes tells the 200-year story of the bicycle by looking at 50 of its most important and interesting models. Covers social history (the bike provided cheap transport to the masses), sporting history (from the origins of the Tour de France to the model used by the great Eddy Merckx), and the history of technology (from the development of the chains and gears to “superbikes” such as the Lotus 108). Illustrated throughout with a wide range of classic and contemporary images.
F
or an invention that has only been around for 200 years, the simple bicycle has changed the world in many ways. It democratized transport for the first time, allowing ordinary people to travel at reasonable speed without need of a horse, to commute further afield to work and to enjoy the benefits of the countryside. It has challenged social conventions, granting women a newfound freedom, and it has played an important role in wartime, whether used by British paratroopers or in Vietnamese supply lines. Today, despite the prevalence of the car, the bicycle is as important as ever, with more cycles appearing on city streets each year.

The History of Cycling in Fifty Bikes tells the story of the bicycle through 50 iconic machines, starting with the first primitive wooden two-wheelers through to carbon-fiber super bikes and the designs of the future, celebrating sporting achievements, technological advances and world records along the way.

It will be your job to teach them appropriate behavior.
The Secret Language of Puppies is your partner during this first year, your one-stop guide when looking for answers. Learn to translate the vocal communication, behavior, and body language of your puppy. Understand how your puppy sees the world.
