LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Now is the moment pent up demand can be captured by those of us who are still trying to make a living in the powersports business.

motivation. A buying signal. An offer to give you business.

The shake up in the industry of the last few years has seen a number of long time figures age out of the business and move on, struggling shops closed up and some just decided to do another thing.

But what if they do the entire transaction over the phone and internet and Fed-Ex?

And you know that. Yet in the end - as in lately - there seems to be more interest by new riders of a fresher demographic. Increased demand as it were. Thanks to health concerns that demand is also pent up to a degree, but only a Small degree.

You knew that too, so just capitalize on it.

Magnify your efforts ten fold. Know the answer to every question before it’s asked. Be able to keep that conversation going to it’s profitable conclusion . Chances are you already know the customer’s FAQ anyway. Yet by how much would your sales improve if you rarely had to say “I’ll check into that”?

If they can not easily get what they think they want to relive boredom or stress they’ll just move on. They probably will anyway, sooner or later.

Sales is a tricky little beast in every department. Do not discount these employee’s. They need to be just as qualified, on point and capable.

Another side of this new business oriented Rubik’s cube is near instant gratification. When people decide they want relief in some form it had better happen, and it better be PDQ.

Service after the sale is a real thing and it can make your whole store a Hero or a Zero to a customer.

And you probably knew that too. Oh, and by the way whatever the service or product, it is a really good idea for those rendering to be at the pinnacle, on point and tuned in because these buyers are. They’ve done their research, sorted it out, eliminated prospects, investigated venues and made the choices. Yes, choices. They will still compare the top couple results in person. It’s due diligence and while they may have food deliveries and all kinds of other things delivered right to their door if they are there in your store or shop that is a sign of very high WWW.MOTORCYCLETIMES.COM

As you work through the day take time to give yourself a checkup from the neck up. If you are the dealer principle, give the whole dealership a tune up.

Perhaps hosting a Season Opener Barbeque for customers and employee’s complete with games and rides in order to start off on a really high note. Keep the idea of a season closer in the customer’s thoughts as well, and of course the employee’s. Consider holding them the weekend after Memorial day and Labor day so more can attend. You know the FAQ’s. Chances are you know the answers too. Now is the moment.

ONE HUNDRED THINGS TO DO Take note of the following paragraph. I read the full story quite a while ago in 2008. LOS ANGELES — Dave Freeman, co-author of “100 Things to Do Before You Die,” a travel guide and ode to odd adventures that inspired readers and imitators, died after hitting his head in a fall at his home. He was 47.

I am, somehow, reminded of the Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:13-21) whose life was ended abruptly and unexpectedly. By no means do I denigrate either Mr. Freeman nor any of those who seek out places and adventures – as we do on our rides. As a motorcyclist, I tend to feel a bit more aware of my mortality while also not riding in fear. Perhaps, that’s an advantage to the comfort of a routine life as it focuses the intent of why I ride. As a Christian Biker, I feel that I have what Mark Twain described as “the calm confidence of a Christian with four aces.” But, let’s consider Mr. Freeman’s book in light of his unexpected death. Not having read the entire book (only select portions), I don’t know what the complete list entails. It seems to me, however, that such a list should certainly include a reconciliation with the Creator of the universe, and that on a person’s “to do” list, personal repentance should be pretty close to the top of the list next to breathing. You might have read before that one of my favorite sayings is “If you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans.” God has a “to do” list for us that, while in His will, gives us a freedom to act in our own free will for tremendous adventures. We execute our plans while serving others at rallies, open houses, poker runs, and meetings. We gas up our tanks and, in obedience, follow His command to “Go…” The comparisons of our efforts in Christian service and God’s leading could, of course, continue extensively in this writing, and that’s the point. I have a lot of “to do” lists for household activities and workrelated projects. For me, God has already provided an extensive “to do” list which is well suited to getting out there on a motorcycle. Even better, the efforts within the ministry of the CMA are not disparate, disjointed, unrelated activities on a simple “punch list” but rather exist to singularly point all (who are paying attention and inclined by the Holy Spirit) to the cross and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yep. Out of curiosity, I still might fully read that book of “100 things to do” with an eye towards God’s Word. As a biker who is still currently breathing and saved by Christ, I already enjoy a wealth of options in my service to Him. I hope that particular “wealth” is fully spent before I go to my eternal home. Dave Freeman almost certainly didn’t expect to leave this world when he did at the age of 47 while looking to finish his list. Something to think about. “For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) In HIS Service, Jack Applebaum
