MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA EXPERIENCE PRESENTED BY MONASH MOTORSPORT

In September, Motorsport Australia joined forces with Monash Motorsport (MMS) to host an experience with over 200 parents and students at the Monash University Clayton campus.

Hosted at the Woodside Building for Technology and Design, participants rotated through various activities across all aspects of racing as well as hearing presentations from motorsport industry professionals.

Kicking off with a workshop with MMS powertrain development partner, the Power Engineering Advanced Research Laboratory (PEARL), participants completed Monash University coursework in motor control using power electronics.

Participants were also given the opportunity to compete in high intensity racing with robotic, mini formula student cars built by the talented MMS team.

Following the initial workshop, students then tested themselves with an accurate cost cap challenge that encouraged the problemsolving required for real-world compromising budgets.

The activities concluded with students taking part in a racing simulation, with

equipment supplied by Motorsport Australia, as well as a remotecontrol car event where students had the opportunity to participate in a simulated skid pad event.

To wrap up the day’s proceedings, participants heard from Motorsport Australia Participation Coordinator Chantel Collins and Real Time Learning Australia’s Luke Kerr.

MSS expressed their gratitude for a fantastic event, with the team looking forward to more joint learning and development opportunities into the future.

RACE OF CHAMPIONS MAKES ITS AUSTRALIAN DEBUT IN 2025

The iconic Race Of Champions (ROC) will visit Australia for the first time in its more than 35 year history next March, with the event taking place at Accor Stadium in Sydney. Last run in 2023 on the snow and ice of Sweden, ROC will now travel 15,000 kilometres across the globe to the sun-drenched landscape of Sydney for a brandnew high octane challenge on the field at Accor Stadium.

With a history dating back to 1988, the Race Of Champions has been held at some of the world’s greatest venues – including Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium, Stade de France in Paris, London’s Olympic Stadium and Wembley Stadium, Mexico City’s Foro Sol plus a wide

range of exotic locations all over the globe from Bangkok to Barbados to Miami to Riyadh to Mexico City and the Arctic Circle in Sweden.

The ROC racing format is a unique, winner-takes-all contest that gives drivers from various disciplines of motorsport the opportunity to test their talents against competitors they would never typically encounter.

ROC is renowned for gathering some of the best drivers in the World, including superstars from Formula 1, Le Mans, IndyCar, Nascar, World Rally and Rallycross—legends like Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Sébastien Loeb, David Coulthard, Marcus Grönholm, and Jenson Button.

This also includes other international stars like Nascar champions Jimmie

Johnson, Kurt and Kyle Busch, and Jeff Gordon; Ryan Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden of IndyCar; Formula E Champion Lucas Di Grassi; Extreme sports star Travis Pastrana; and Indy 500 champs Juan-Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves.

The Race Of Champions will run over two nights with the purpose built track taking centre stage at Accor Stadium, seeing the ROC Nations Cup take place on Friday 7 March, with drivers paired up in teams based on nationality to bid for the title of ‘World’s Fastest Nation’.

The Saturday night will see the individual Race Of Champions, when all teamwork goes out of the window and it will be a flat-out battle for individual glory and the ‘Champion of Champions’ Title.

The event will not only celebrate the Global motorsport elite but also give an opportunity to celebrate the rich motorsport history of Australia with top Australian drivers competing head-to-head with the World's best.

“We are incredibly excited to bring the Race Of Champions to Australia

for the first time ever,” said Fredrik Johnsson, Race Of Champions President and co-founder.

“ROC has always been about pushing drivers to their limits in unique conditions.

“Australia has a rich motorsport heritage, and we're looking forward to celebrating that by pitting some of the best Australian drivers against some of the world’s most legendary racing stars in a spectacular showdown in the middle of Accor Stadium.”

Confirmed to make a start in the 2025 event, seven-time Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup will again represent Australia – having previously competed in the 2012 and 2014 events.

“I had a great time competing at the Race Of Champions World Finals in Bangkok and Barbados. I'm thrilled to be part of the ROC driver line up again in 2025, especially with the event being hosted in Sydney,” said Whincup.

“Competing alongside some of the best drivers in the world from so many different racing series is always an incredible challenge and representing Australian motorsport on home soil now that ROC comes to Australia for the first time makes it even more special. I can't wait to get out there and give it everything for the Aussie fans.”

Fans can expect a festival-like atmosphere surrounding Race Of Champions, with entertainment, activities, and a chance to witness some of the world’s best drivers up close in one of the most stunning cities in the world.

“The Race Of Champions is an incredibly exciting and new event for Sydney,” said NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper.

“This is an event like no other with the world’s best drivers to go head-to-head on Australian soil for the first time – it will be a spectacle not to be missed.”

SUPER SANDOWN ENABLES GIRLS DOUBLE-PROGRAM

Last month saw the completion of another successful FIA Girls On Track program held at the 2024 Penrite Oil Sandown 500 in the first of the Repco Supercars Championship endurance events.

Two separate programs were run across the event, the morning session hosting participants aged 8-15 years old for the Inspire program, followed by Pathways participants aged 15-22 years old in the afternoon.

The Inspire girls entered Sandown Motor Raceway early Friday morning, warmly welcomed and introduced to the event’s schedule by Girls on Tack Ambassador and Motorsport Australia’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs Nadine Armstrong.

The girls participating in the Inspire program were split into four groups to complete rotational activities, including a STEM workshop, media workshop, pitstop and reaction challenge and a look into the Supercars garages. The STEM workshop offered participants the chance to build and design their own race car using LEGO under certain time constraints, while the media group took a tour of the Supercars Media Centre and put their script writing and presenting skill to the test.

The pit stop challenge involved the girls completing a practice pit stop, learning the basic steps of removing tires, changing them, as well as jacking up the wooden car.

The day concluded with an exclusive tour of the teams’ garages, offering participants an eyeopening experience into what a Supercars paddock looks like.

Later that afternoon, the second group of participants arrived for the Pathways event, commencing with a panel discussion and Q&A session with three guest speakers.

The young women heard insights from Lisa Cramption, Motorsport Australia Sporting & Technical Director, Filippa Guarna, Media Coach, SuperUtes Operations & Comms Manager and Imogen Radburn, Formula Ford Driver.

Each guest discussed their journey in Motorsport, offering the girls advice on how to get their start in the industry and establish long-lasting careers.

The Pathways event continued with the young women being split into two groups to experience a Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia GR

Cup paddock visit and Pathways workshops with breakout discussions.

Both activities provided participants the opportunity to ask questions and make connections with professionals in the industry.

The day finished with a networking session, allowing the girls to exchange contacts with each other, strengthening their relationships and assisting them in taking the next step in their motorsport journey.

The next FIA Girls on Track Pathways event will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park for the next round of the Shannons SpeedSeries on Friday 18 October. The next Inspire event will be held on Thursday 14 November for the Repco Supercars Championship at VAILO Adelaide 500.
