greater than ever before. Progress is impossible without change! Sometimes it is best to embrace change and focus on the positives rather than outline a negative. Whatever your views, we should all not lose the focus of this change, a change for the better... we hope. Although more importantly for the MsD brand, we saw one of the biggest changes in UK trade shows with MotorsportDays LIVE being launched at Silverstone. Removing the fan element was clearly the right thing to do as the 1000-plus people that went out on track over the two days – sampling more than 150 cars from numerous championships, race teams, manufacturers and track day organisers – were as passionate about motorsport as the MsD team itself. We are already planning next year’s show – 1-2 November 2019 – and aim to deliver another show that offers a unique perspective for both the professional and amateur racing driver.

his year’s motorsport season has seen some major changes, creating passionate discussions for both the fans and professionals. Take the new “W Series”, a single-seater series for women only. Comments on social media are stating this is the wrong step forward, it pigeon-holes women rather than leaving them to compete against men as they already are. Although we believe it creates a platform for sponsorship, and a championship worth winning which would surely be recognised as a route to Formula 1. Not to mention two rebrands for Liberty Media and Motorsport UK, formerly known as the MSA. Perhaps the most significant observation is that Formula 1 had a backlash from fans who were unhappy with the design and the Americanised changes but who now probably don’t batter an eyelid when watching this season and next. In this issue, I catch up with Hugh Chambers, the new Chairman of Motorsport UK. They’ve introduced a new logo and major change of focus, safeguarding the grassroots and making the sport more accessible to all. There has been a positive response to these changes – no doubt there are many other racers like me who welcome a governing body that is looking to promote motor racing. With all of these changes, I believe we are seeing an evolution of the sport, something far

THREE-TIMES BTCC CHAMPION GORDON SHEDDEN TALKS TO ALEXANDRA LEGOUIX ABOUT BATTLING JETLAG, A PASSION FOR MOTORBIKES AND WHY NEXT SEASON MAY BE HIS YEAR IN WTCR, EVEN IF IT DOES MEAN MISSING THE GOODWOOD REVIVAL

he World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) changed significantly in 2018. New name, new cars, new rules and regulations, new circuits and new drivers. Among this new line-up was a pretty handy British peddler – “Sheds” or “Flash” as he is affectionately termed – Gordon Shedden, the wee lad from the Highlands. Gordon started out racing in his native Scotland with limited funds but huge ambition and it is with talent and sheer hard work and determination that he has climbed the ladder to a notable wall of fame which consists of three British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) titles under his belt. A feat that only a handful of other drivers have managed to do. So does he want another and join Andy Rouse in that exclusive club? Sure – who wouldn’t but not right now, Gordon’s full focus is on getting a world title instead and he feels that 2019 could be his year. W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

This year has been tricky. It was full of ups and downs. Bad weather made testing at the start of the season pretty much a no-go. So kicking off his world campaign around the tricky Marrakech street circuit was tough. “We weren’t ready. We didn’t have time to lay enough foundations so we knew we would struggle,” explained Gordon. “It became very obvious that weekend that we were on the back foot and that 2018 was going to be about setting the foundations to move the project forward for 2019. Rome wasn’t built in a day! We have worked extremely hard since and I now feel that when we sit on the grid again in Marrakech 2019 we will be in a much better position.” So, it has been a tough season for Sheds. “Honestly, I expected better results too but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Some years are tough in racing and it is how you deal with it and make it better.” It didn’t quite meet expectations but with so many unknown new factors, that isn’t surprising. Gordon has been

racing alongside team-mate and close friend, Matt Neal for 11 years. He knows the BTCC inside out. He knows every circuit like the back of his hand and could race them all with his eyes shut. So, to be thrown into the World Series at such short notice was taking a huge leap in to the unknown. “I didn’t know anyone on or off track. I was racing against totally different people – all of an extremely high level who have been racing against each other for years,” revealed Gordon. “I haven’t really ever done street circuits before and we have four tough ones on the calendar. I didn’t know the car, the tyres or the team too well and you have just two 30-minute practice sessions before you’re into qualifying – so I was just on the back foot. Although all of that is what has made this year tough but fantastic. It has been a great

new challenge.” For most of this season, the top 20 has been well within one second of each other – the competitiveness of the Championship has escalated to a whole new level compared to recent years. So, of all seasons for Gordon to join, this was the hardest one by a country mile. In addition to all of the on-track factors, there is also the rather significant factor of jetlag to deal with. Being his first foray into an international series, he didn’t expect it to take such a toll. “That was something very new and hard to deal with! I am still not even sure how you manage it properly. I was getting four hours sleep generally and my focus wasn’t on time-zones but on just being awake enough to race well! I don’t know the magic answer of how to deal with that at all.” That definitely makes it

The world is different but it has been such a great adventure” harder for everyone in the paddock, especially with a double header in China, followed by Japan two weeks later. Although that didn’t seem to affect Gordon too badly as his first win was at Wuhan – the second of the Chinese rounds. “That was such a significant win

for me. One of my favourites of my career. To win at this level after such a tough year felt incredible. Not only that though; the most significant factor was that this was the only race on the calendar where everyone on the grid was a rookie as it was a brand-new circuit. We were all on the same level playing field and I won it.” A huge confidence boost for Gordon and for the team too. He has now found his place in the paddock and is excited about 2019. “I love it. It is like one huge travelling circus. I love the dynamic of it all. One day you’re racing against someone and the next day you’re waiting for a plane together in the airport lounge. The entire world is different but it has been such a great adventure. I love the tracks we go to, I love how different they all are and I cannot wait to race at The Ring again!” W W W. PRO ANNUAL 2019 Who would have thought that this champ has never before raced at The Green Hell? “Never! I went once as a passenger in a road car with Frank Stippler and I was hanging on for dear life! But to race there is on a whole new level. Everyone talks about ‘The Ring’. I thought it may have been a bit over-hyped and not be as good to race at as people had made out – but I was wrong! It was mega! We should have been more competitive and for sure we will be next time, but I cannot wait. It is great!” Alongside Knockhill and Bathurst, Nürburgring has become a firm favourite for Gordon. Next season sees the WTCR head to Sepang, Malaysia – another new track – which he is also looking forward too, although his reasons might surprise you. “I’m excited about Sepang because apparently it rains a lot. I like the rain. I am at home in the rain.” Although, when you remember it rains around 265 days a year in Scotland, this makes sense! Gordon will be back once again behind the wheel of the Audi RS3 LMS with team-mate Jean Karl Vernay, with whom he gets on well with. He does, of course, miss his long-legged mate Matt Neal but by all accounts, they still speak daily and Sheds still gets “massive amounts of abuse off him on Messenger”. After being title winner in the one-make Ford Fiesta series in 2000, Shedden finished runner up to fellow WTCR driver, Rob Huff in the SEAT Cupra Championship in 2003. While Huff then stepped up to the world stage, Shedden started his BTCC career in 2006. Although he won races in 2006 and 2007, he endured a tough few seasons before signing with the Honda–backed Team Dynamics outfit alongside Neal in 2010, winning the first of

three BTCC titles in 2012. He and Matt have a welldocumented close relationship. They have fought some incredibly close battles and it came down to the wire for the title battle between them in 2016. Although, apparently, it was thanks to Gordon’s fireproof undies that he trumped Matt! “I was never superstitious. Not properly. But Matt is – annoyingly superstitious. He has specific undies with things written on them. He has to do things in a specific order and he cannot cope if things are out of sync at all. At the end of 2016 it was between him and me for the win. He turned up in his lucky pants. I turned up in my lucky boots that I had won the title in before but this time I also had my lucky fireproof undies. Matt was so annoyed that not only were my boots not ‘on brand’ but that he didn’t have something for additional luck! I won. That drove him crazy!” Gordon may claim not to be superstitious but the number that always adorns his car is 52. It actually started as a random

number for Sheds – he chose it when karting – and then built his image and brand around it and it has stuck with him all the way through his career. The only time he has ever changed was after winning the 2012 BTCC title and he was given number one for the 2013 season However, he then had a tough season and as the number was the only thing that had changed “I obviously had to go back to 52, no matter what. It has never failed me”. So, not superstitious at all! In addition to his WTCR duties, Sheds has kept up with his various other driving commitments. Trimming the hedge in the Comet Cyclone at the Goodwood Revival was a fun experience to add to his memory bank from 2018. Not necessarily the gardening but getting to drive these incredible cars is something Gordon loves. “The thing I love most about Goodwood is that you drive with a huge smile. It is an absolute delight to be behind the wheel of these amazing cars without the pressure behind you. It’s

still competitive but it isn’t the same. In touring cars everything is deadly serious. You can potentially let down so many people. I don’t think I have ever driven a lap in touring cars with a smile on my face because I am so focused! At Goodwood I have a permanent, huge grin. As a driver, it takes you back to why you started in the first place. Raw passion. There is no data to go through, no engineer, none of the stresses and it is just full of flair. You can just enjoy the experience and atmosphere.” Gordon is beaming as he recalls the feeling of driving these cars and admits that the mid-60s is his favourite era; with the Lotus Cortinas, E-types, Cobras and all the dangers and atmosphere that went along with them. So, it is understandable that he is disappointed to discover that the 2019 WTCR calendar clashes with his Goodwood dates and so he won’t get to mow Lord March’s lawns again. “It is a huge shame. Every meeting clashes sadly so that will really make a huge W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

difference to me but I am so excited about the WTCR project so that makes it more bearable. I really didn’t expect to be competing in the World Series at the start of 2018 – so everything has changed so suddenly – so I am going with it and seeing where life takes me.” Life certainly took Gordon down a different route to that which he had pictured. The little boy who grew up loving cars and watching races with his Dad never imagined he would end up racing in a World Series. “I always loved cars but being a ‘racing driver’ was pie in the sky. I would peer over the barriers and dream of how amazing it would be, but that is all it ever was – a pipe dream. It wasn’t realistic. To go from that, to karting, to my first race at Knockhill in the Scottish Fiesta XR2 one-make series, to 11 years in BTCC and now racing touring cars at world level is just incredible. I feel so lucky. It just goes to show that if you’re willing to put the hard work in, if you’re truly determined and you want it enough it is do-able. Hard, but doable. You just have to keep fighting.” Gordon just loves anything fast. Hugely into his bikes when he is not racing, Gordon gets his W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

kicks from taking the bike out – be it trials or motorbikes. “It is one of the few things I get to do that is total focus and pure adrenaline,” revealed Gordon.

“Autonomous is a ‘no’ from me – I hope they throw that idea out. We need drivers. But electric is where the future is at” So when asked if he had the opportunity to do life all over again, what would he do differently, he replied: “I love what I have done, but if I could do it again and have a parallel universe then I would be really interested to see how good I could be on a bike. With cars there are other large factors that affect your situation but with a bike it is about you and the bike. I often have that ‘what if’ feeling when I think about bikes.” Gordon may not be stepping into the bike world but fast approaching is the electric world, which he has positive feelings about. “Autonomous is

Fifteen years ago most of us didn’t even have an iPhone and now look. I feel so lucky to be in the era where there is still the engine but we are witnessing massive changes. It’s great.” Three days of testing in Portimao, Portugal, follow our chat before Gordon officially winds down for Christmas with his family. He is happy to have a break from travelling but is itching to get behind the wheel again and attack 2019 with full force. Armed with his number 52 and his lucky boots, let us see what he will bring us British fans in 2019. ■

W IS FOR WORLD-CLASS THE W SERIES REVEALS ITS LONG LIST OF 50 DRIVERS, ALL OF WHOM HOPE TO HIT THE HISTORY BOOKS BY MAKING THE GRID IN THE FIRST WOMEN-ONLY, SINGLE-SEATER CHAMPIONSHIP he W Series, the first all-female championship, has announced a long-list of more than 50 drivers who are competing for a place on the grid of this new championship, which is set to launch next season. Eighteen drivers will eventually make it through to race on Friday 3 May 2019 in Hockenheim, Germany. Every racer on this long-list has been carefully selected from a pool of more than 100 applicants from 30 countries around the world, including the USA, China and India, as well as the UK, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia. “We are thrilled but perhaps not surprised by the response,” said Catherine Bond Muir, CEO of W Series. “Even today there is a massive gender imbalance in motorsport and W Series is making the first step to correct that. Drivers from all

over the world have stepped forward, so it’s clear that with the right framework we can make the changes this sport desperately needs.” These 50 hopefuls will now have just two months to prepare for the next step in the selection process – a three-day, on-and-off-track trial, including fitness tests and psychometric profiling, as well as multiple driving skill tests. The final grid will be determined following a series of track tests in the W Series racecar – a 2019 Tatuus T-318. Former Formula 1 stars David Coulthard and Alex Wurz will be among the judges, alongside Dave Ryan, W Series Racing Director. “We designed W Series specifically to shine a light on female talent right around the world,” said David Coulthard, who also chairs the W Series Advisory Board, “and I can’t wait

to be part of the next stage and to see some of that talent in action.” Not only is the W Series a free-to-enter competition, but a total prize fund of $1,500,000 has been assigned, with the overall series winner receiving $500,000. The W Series will also fund travel and subsistence costs, which opens the competition to drivers from all economic backgrounds across the world. In addition. six drivers, Alice Powell (UK), Shea Holbrook (USA), Naomie Schiff (Belgium), Emma Kimilainen (Finland), Stephane Kox (Netherlands) and Vicky Piria (Italy), have been chosen as ambassadors to represent all the W Series qualifiers ■ For full details of all the qualifying drivers go to

THERE MIGHT BE SOME GOOD NEWS COMING OUT OF EUROPE IN THE NEAR FUTURE! NO NOT BREXIT, THE VNUK INSURANCE NIGHTMARE IS SLOWLY MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION s we enter 2019 and move towards a new racing season, it is fair to say that the UK is currently “enjoying” a love/ hate relationship with Europe! On track, we have seen many notable successes in Europe by teams and drivers based in the UK – with TF Sport, Barwell Motorsport, United Autosports and Nielsen Racing leading the way against their European counterparts. Off the track, the topics of Brexit and Vnuk continue to hover in the background, threatening to destabilise our buoyant and successful motorsport industry. The Brexit picture is changing on an almost daily basis, and at the time of writing, the crucial House of Commons vote was still to take place. Depending on its outcome, at some stage in the future, we may still have major concerns about a) the cost and/or transportation of race parts from the EU into the UK for marques such as Porsche and Mercedes etc, and

b) insurers pulling out of writing EU business (in the event of a No Deal Brexit). Watch this space... However, we recently received better news regarding Vnuk and its legislative journey through the EU Commission. For those that have been living on the moon since 2014, Mr Vnuk, a Slovenian farmer, had the misfortune to be knocked off a ladder by a tractor’s trailer on private land. Four years ago, the EU ruled that ALL mechanically propelled vehicles had to have compulsory motor insurance, affecting vehicles such as forklifts, golf buggies, sit-on lawn mowers and worryingly, any form of motorsport. The legislative journey has been “painful” up to now and earlier this year, the Motorsport UK counterparts in France, Belgium and Holland advised local organising clubs that the principals of Vnuk would apply in all of their race paddocks (but not on track). Some UK drivers attending lower profile race meetings in Europe were forced to source and take out

their own liability policies from “local” Insurers – thankfully any organising clubs from the UK choose to “ignore” / shoulder the risk and so the many competitors travelling to Spa and Zandvoort etc were unaffected. It has been reported, incorrectly, that the Saviour for motorsport is the addition of the words “in traffic” to the Directive. Actually, Amendment 4/Proposal 3b recommends that “the Directive excludes specifically vehicles intended exclusively for motorsports, as they are limited to a controlled track or space and thus having an accident with unrelated vehicles or persons is limited”. So motorsport is not quite in the clear. The next step is a vote on all the Directive amendments by the EU in the near future – fingers crossed everyone!! Final thought – there is one scenario where the UK leave the EU, but the Vnuk Directive gets passed as is; meaning that all European-based Championships would look to move to the UK in the future! ■

n Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE recorded its maiden FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) victory in Shanghai in November – the 6 Hours of Shanghai. This was thanks to a perfectly-judged performance by Danish drivers Nicki Thiim and Marco Sørensen, who were recording their first victory since Mexico 2017. The 2016 FIA WEC GTE Pro Champions navigated their way through no less than five safety cars and two red flag stoppages (for 90 minutes) due to torrential and persistent rain, before they could bring home the win for the #95 Vantage GTE. The Vantage was the class of the GTE Pro field in these difficult conditions though and ran one-two, with the sister #97 car driven by Maxime Martin and Alex Lynn. With an hour to go there was a possibility of a clean sweep at the top of the podium. Earlier in the race though, the team had decided to split the two cars’ strategy to optimise its chances for victory. This meant that #97 had to change to its final set of wet tyres earlier than the W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

#95 for the final stint. This left them struggling for grip when a further rain shower came at the end of the race and they had to settle for fourth place. So it was left to Thiim and Sørensen to battle for the win as the weather and the light deteriorated, making conditions treacherous. However, following on from a typically committed and hard-charging middle stint from Nicki Thiim, Marco Sørensen maintained his composure and delivered a historic victory. This was despite the increased pressure of another late-race safety car. “It was definitely a long race in very difficult conditions,” said Marco. “We are super happy that we got the first win for the new car. In fact, it was so quick today that it seemed we were almost fighting for the overall victory! The team has worked so hard and it has been a challenging start to the Super Season, so feels great to finish 2018 with a win and go into the winter focussed on optimising the car even more before Sebring next year.” Nicki added: “It’s been a huge learning curve for the team with this new Vantage GTE and to be standing here on top of the podium after

all the work we’ve put in is a really emotional feeling. The whole team delivered today. We had the most competitive car; the strategy was spot on and everyone worked perfectly together to bring this result. “I’m super-proud, not only to be a part of the Aston Martin family but to be able to help deliver the first win for the Aston Martin Vantage GTE. It’s been one chaotic race, but the end of it has produced the perfect result!” Coincidentally the Vantage GTE’s first win comes at the same venue as that of its predecessor – the V8 Vantage GTE – which won in Shanghai

in 2012. Aston Martin Racing has always shone in China and the team has had a car finish in either first or second at every Shanghai race in either the GTE Pro or Am. Aston Martin Racing Managing Director John Gaw added: “Obviously, it is great for us to record the first victory for the new Aston Martin Vantage GTE. It took Porsche 15 attempts to win with their new GTE car and we’ve managed it after just four! It was maybe the most complicated race there has been in the FIA WEC. It was also one of the most competitive GTE Pro races – outside of Le Mans – because

there were 11 cars in the class; which was a first. It was also a big boost for us to know that we were on exactly the same Michelin tyre as our immediate competition and today we had the fastest car. “I’m delighted for everyone but feel a bit sorry for the #97 crew, who also drove extremely well. We decided this weekend to ensure that we didn’t have both cars on the same strategy to stay in contention at all times because we were going for the win. This actually put the #95 on a sub-optimal strategy initially but meant the #97 had to run a full stint on worn wets at the end of the race.”

Meanwhile, in the GTE Am, the reigning World Champions Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda finished fifth in the #98 Aston Martin V8 Vantage after starting the race from pole position. The points they earned here moved them to second in the Championship. This, combined with a penalty given to the class points leader, closed the gap to 20 points (less than a race win) off the championship lead. So with the next round of the Championship, the 1000 Miles of Sebring in the USA, on Sunday, 15 March, 2019, there is still very much all to play for. ■

REGULATION UNIFORM PRO-AM’s Editor Ben Whibley put Walero’s temperature-regulating base layers through its paces out on track arlier in the year, Walero offered me the chance to experience its temperatureregulating base layers, featuring technology used by NASA astronauts. It is important to note that regulation is the key word here. This is not a sub-zero item to keep you cool or hot but an item of clothing which helps regulate your core body temperature. As most racers know, race suits are hot, especially after a test or race session. Magnify that with sitting next to a boiling hot engine or exhaust for half an hour and it is very hot. So these fully flameretardant, base layers are scientifically designed by a driver, for drivers, to regulate body temperature, enhance driver performance and ensure maximum comfort. That driver is Fiona James (owner, founder and racing driver) who has never accepted OK but has always strived for more. Fiona James’s background is at the highest levels of equestrianism, having fielded

several horses up to Olympic level. So she is well accustomed to pushing the limits and using technology to find that next 0.01s, always seeking that next incremental gain. When James was sat in her Praga R1, strapped in and ready to go, she was already being affected by the heat given off by her car, the elements and inadvertently, the insulating safety wear that she was wearing. So, she set herself a challenge: find a solution to heat stress suffered by drivers. From this, Walero was born. My initial test of the Walero clothing one could say was quite the opposite. It was at my local track, Brands Hatch, on a cold day and I got kitted up, ready for the test day. Out the bag, you can tell the Walero is a well thought out product - nicely packaged – and the quality was far greater than the usual layers I have worn previously. I put the layers on, along with my suit, and got comfortable in the car and that was it. I felt comfortable and my body temperature was perfect. I was driving a Caterham, so a full open top car, fully exposed

I’ve even started to use the Walero in motorcross and other sports. A multiuse item like this is essential and is an item you will always see in my kit bag ready for my next race meet to all the elements but I could feel none of the usual draft or unnecessary compression. Of course as an amateur racer you expect your race clothing to lose shape with washing, but over the past six months the Walero layers haven’t lost their shape at all. This is crucial and I’ve even started to use these layers during the off-season, in motocross and other sports. A multiuse item like this is essential and is an item you will always see in my kit bag ready for my next race meet. So thank you Walero for providing the perfect, regulating layers. My only regret is that it doesn’t have the same effect on my racing lines! ■

OF CHANGE Motorsport UK’s CEO Hugh Chambers talks to PRO-AM’s Benjamin Davis about the name change, Brexit and racing his MGB when time allows ugh Chambers might have only become Chief Executive of Motor Sport UK in November 2018 but he is already making his mark. A new name and a new logo are just the first hints of the many

strategic short- and long-term strategies that are being rolled out. Working alongside him to effect these changes is his boss, and old friend, the Association’s Chairman David Richards – Hugh’s former boss at Prodrive. This dynamic duo is working hard to launch this governing body into the 21st century and W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

beyond. “We are changing the way in which we embrace the entire motorsport community – not just those who have licences,” explained Hugh. “Motorsport UK is expanding from a rules, governance and regulations organisation to one that is promoting the sport and looking after its best interests. Ultimately we want an organisation that is customer-centric and looking to innovate in terms of products, technologies and championships. “In the short-term we are already initiating various things which have gone to market, such as taking the British Kart Championship in-house. This has been extremely well received from engine manufacturers, circuits, BKDA – we have already achieved our target in terms of numbers of entries for 2019 season – as well as the drivers, who clearly voted with their credit cards, and that is just one initiative. We have a whole pile of other things coming up. “ He continued: “ I think in terms of bigger, broader elements, we are changing W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

“Ultimately we want an organisation that is customercentric and looking to innovate in terms of products, technologies and championships” our internal governance of the sport. I think we will be recruiting a lot of people on the commercial and marketing side, placing a lot more emphasis on that. As we go through the year, I think you will see a lot more external facing comms and collaborations with different stakeholders across the landscape. We want to get closer to the track day industry, things like commercial karting and some series which are not recognised by us such as drifting, even though the FIA does, although I think that will change.” The response to MSUK’s rebranding programme has been really positive so far, although the CEO is well aware that it is the work that goes on behind the scenes that will ensure success in the end. “A

new name and new branding are not in themselves anything to celebrate but symbolic of a very different change of direction for the organisation,” he said. “We are viewing 2019 as a transition year in lots of regards. There are a lot of things that we are doing that are not going to be fully embedded or changed until we get to 2020. What I would say though is the name and the branding has been universally adopted and accepted and embraced by all different stakeholders.” Motorsport UK’s long-term plans are impressive and Hugh Chambers is perfectly positioned to help secure these vital changes as he has not only worked at the highest level in motorsport but for several other influential, governing bodies too, including the British

Olympic Association (BOA) and World Sailing. “All my roles in sport since 1995 have been of a commercial/marketing nature. I had 10 years at Prodrive as one of the partners and my responsibility really covered the marketing communications roles, working with the various teams that we had, the Subaru World Rally Team etc. However I became increasingly engaged with the commercial agenda and ended up running the sales division of Prodrive, which is all the customer teams and all the customer cars that we built. So I had responsibility for the British Touring Car Championship with Ford and the Ferrari programme that we ran at Le Mans etc. “Then, we got the contract to run the BAR Honda Formula 1 team for BAT [British American Tobacco]. BAT had been sponsors of the Subaru World Rally team, that is where that relationship came from. They had great faith in David [Richards] and the team. BAR was doing very badly after three seasons, think they had got about nine points, and so they gave it to David. He very much wanted it to be a Prodrive team

that came in, rather than just him as team principal. So it was me, Nick Fry and David that effectively took it over. We were lucky that Jeff Willis had joined about six months earlier from Williams – he was very much Adrian Newey’s protégé – and so for three years we ran the whole thing. “We learnt a great deal about the commercial side of Formula 1. It was interesting, although it is a pretty constrained environment in terms of what you can do and Bernie [Ecclestone] had it very well locked down. There weren’t many assets other than the direct property around the car. You couldn’t then activate anything within the event – you had to buy your hospitality from paddock club so it wasn’t the most flexible and creative environment in which to do deals as a team.” So is there any tie-in between his new role at Motorsport UK and his previous work the nonmotorsport organisations? “There is synergy 100%,” said Hugh emphatically. “The most obvious is that they both involve athletes and large bits of kit so you have got human endeavour

and a bit of technology and the interface between those two is quite similar. The rules and regulations are clearly a lot more complex when you have bit of technology involved than if you just have to put on a pair of running shoes. “Motorsport is fairly complicated to administer and I would say, as a consequence, that it probably attracts a slightly different type of competitor and a slightly different type of fan than some other sports. That is the starting point in terms of the DNA of the sport. “In more generic terms though there is a lot to learn from those governing bodies which have reinvented themselves from their original format, which were decades, if not for 100 years, all about the rule book. The modern, forwardfacing organisations realise they need to be on the front foot of promoting the sport for all the stakeholders. They also need to create tangible value through the creation and ownership of intellectual property and assets which can be the basis of partnerships with other W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

This could then be used to promote the sport to drive more people into it. That is really where we are. Where World Sailing was two years ago is where we are now.” One thing that Motorsport UK has in common with these other sporting associations is on dealing with Brexit, although Hugh’s take on the situation is surprisingly philosophical. “Motorsport is an expensive pastime compared to many other hobbies and scale-able to people’s resources and expenditure so if people feel economically vulnerable they feel unsure about the future, which is not a good thing for a sport like ours,” he said. “I am not sure we have seen a massive or substantial consequence of that at this point but I think it would be helpful to have economic stability and a solution to Brexit. Ultimately, we are governed by the FIA and so in that regard it is not going to make any difference whether we are in or outside the EU. “Yes, there are some potential legislative consequences – the Vnuk insurance situation is one, although I believe that will be resolved with a sensible solution. However, I don’t think it is the best environment for us to be promoting a relatively expensive hobby W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

and pastime. At the same time though, motorsport has been through any number of different economic upturns and downturns. I think there is an enduring fascination for fast machinery and where there’s a will there’s a way!” Hugh could easily be talking about himself when referring to a fascination for fast machinery. He grew up in a motorsport family – his father was a driver and then a big team manager in the 1950s and ‘60s and so it was always in the blood. “I’ve always loved motor racing,” he said. “I’ve karted and I’ve always raced things through the years, Caterhams, Formula Fords etc, and I now have a 1964 MG B which I race so I am used to being involved in motorsport. “ I have never really had the time to take racing that seriously, professionally. After racing karts as a teenager I carried on racing karts over the years. I suppose, reflective of a lot of people’s lifestyle, it is helpful that you have something that you can arrive and drive. My MGB is run by a little race team. They do a fantastic job, I just turn up at Snetterton, the car is prepped and off we go. I don’t have the time to have a garage to pull things to pieces at the weekends. I have done things like Club 100 over the years which is a fantastic series; extremely well run and a

whole variety of different kit. I like racing different circuits, different things. “What I would like to do is experience a broader spectrum of UK motorsport – do a trial, an auto test, an auto solo. These are on my list and hopefully I will tick a few of them off in 2019. Hugh also admits that if money was no object or if he won the Lottery he “would go and race a wonderful 1964 AC Cobra in a historic race series across Europe, that sounds like a fun thing to do.” This new Motorsport UK CEO was also complimentary about our own MotorsportDays LIVE show in November, which was supported by Motorsport UK throughout the two days. “I was supportive of MotorsportDays LIVE when I first heard of it and it is something that we would like to see succeed.” So that seemed like the perfect moment to conclude our chat – but not before I had given him the dates for MSDLIVE 2019! British motorsport is clearly in good hands – Hugh’s personal passion for motorsport and his extensive experience in sports management can only reap rewards for all drivers, be they professional or amateur, wealthy or racing on the tightest of shoestring budgets. ■

Three-time World Touring Car Cup Champion Andy Priaulx teams up with Lynk & Co Cyan Racing in time for the 2019 WTCR season

hree-time World Champion Andy Priaulx has joined Lynk & Co Cyan Racing for the 2019 FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). The introduction of this multi-year contract means that Cyan Racing can boast a total of eight world titles in the team; Priaulx’s new team-mates will be Yvan Muller and Thed Björk. “I’m delighted to become a Lynk & Co Cyan Racing driver and have no doubt that we are in a strong position to fight for the overall title already in our first year,” said Andy Priaulx. “We have a tough job ahead of us; the competition is as tough as it has ever been in the WTCR. However, I have followed Cyan Racing’s process over the years and this was an easy decision for me to join them ahead of 2019.” Priaulx claimed three straight World Titles in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Most recently, he has raced in GT, claiming the bronze medal of the 2017 FIA GT World Endurance Championship. “Andy is a true touring car legend and his track record speaks for itself. His mix of experience and raw speed will be vital to us. We are glad to have him on board for the 2019 WTCR season that looks to become one of the toughest ever,” said Christian Dahl, CEO of Cyan Racing. This team, which is privately owned and operated, has claimed multiple titles, including the 2017 FIA WTCC titles for driver and team. it was founded in 1996 but was previously named Polestar, until Volvo Cars acquired the performance section and trademark in 2015. t is impossible to write about touring cars without thinking about one legend. With more titles, wins, poles, fastest laps and laps-led than anyone else, Yvan Muller is the most successful driver in FIA World Touring Car history. Muller followed in the tyre tracks of older sister Cathy, whose racing career spanned the Renault 5 Turbo series, British Formula 3, Indy Lights and latterly, a dabble in the 2010 SEAT Leon Supercopa. In fact, the Mullers are a family of racing machines. In 2017, Cathy’s son – Yvan’s nephew – Yann Ehrlacher, stepped up to the World Touring Car stage, joining his uncle on the grid. Not as a team-mate though but as an extraordinarily strong competitor. Over the past two years we have witnessed some wonderful battles on track between uncle and nephew. As a child, Yvan actually wanted to be a truck driver. His father was a “truckie” and owned a haulage company. Naturally, Yvan was keen to follow in his father’s footsteps so got his truck licence and was fairly committed to go down that route. However,

in 1988, he tried his hand at racing in the French Formula Renault and the French Formula 3 and discovered that he was pretty handy behind the wheel. After winning the British Formula 2 Championship in 1992, he continued his singleseater journey and competed in the FIA Formula 3000. However, his single-seat life was relatively short-lived and in 1994 Yvan switched to touring cars and never looked back. He became French Super Touring Champion in 1995. Three years later he made the move to the UK and started an eight-year campaign in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Yvan’s years in BTCC were fantastic and he looks back on them fondly. His winning year – 2003 – was one of his favourite seasons to date. He had some excellent dramas – most notably the on-going feud and on/off track clashes with team-mate and arch rival Jason Plato, which delighted the fans. Then, after finishing second in the championship for the fourth time in five years, he made the decision to switch and drive for SEAT in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCR). He also started racing in the Andros Trophy Ice Racing series W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

PRO ANNUAL 2019

in 1996. He went on to win the title for the next 10 years and, as a result, was effectively banned from the championship after dominating it for so many winters. Keen to do the same in WTCR, we witnessed a formidable year. Yvan won his first WTCR title in 2008. He went on to dominate the championship and although he narrowly missed out on a repeat title win in 2009, he managed to raise the title trophy for the following two years. This racer was very much on a charge, continuing that mission until he retired in 2016 when, very contentedly, after 11 seasons of fantastic racing, he packed away his helmet, hung up his racing boots, grew an unruly beard, and enjoyed the extra time with his family, wife Justine and daughter Tia. That should have been the end of the tale, but it wasn’t. Yvan returned to the WTCR with his own team, YMR Racing, for another full season as team boss and driver at the start of 2018, partnering with the 2017 WTCC Champion, Thed Bjork. W W W. It was my baby and so to go from the mess we were in at testing in Barcelona to the top step in Macau was just the very best feeling ever” The result: Yvan had the busiest year of his entire career! Narrowly missing out on his fifth title – he lost the drivers’ championship by just three points to the oldest gent on the grid, Gabriele Tarquini. This battle came down to the wire, with an intense showdown around the streets of Macau. The win would have meant the world to Yvan, but he was rewarded with something that meant more to him that any individual drivers’ championship– the teams’ title. “I feel so good, it is crazy. I was so happy to be retired, I was so certain of my choice and was enjoying my life so much. However, I had to come back and take this opportunity to race

with my own team in WTCR. It was so tough; we were so far from being ready. Just three days before the first round in Marrakech we almost decided to pull out as we just weren’t ready to run a full season but decided to go for it and commit and I am so glad we did. To win the team title was the most important win for me and it was the dream I never expected to come true.” It was such a worthy win, YMR was the true zero to hero team. It is rare to witness such a genuine team effort. Normally the drivers are there for testing and the races but never before have I seen the drivers physically working so hard behind the

PRO ANNUAL 2019

scenes. It wasn’t uncommon to see both drivers with a broom in their hand, or behind the wheel of one of the forklift trucks. “We were both involved so much but that made it even more rewarding for us all. The pressure was on to do well, especially for me as I had risked so much to try to make this happen. All the investment was from me, my people worked on it all, it was my baby and so to go from the mess we were in at testing in Barcelona to the top step in Macau was just the very best feeling ever.” Not only did Yvan have the pressure of his team running the Hyundai i30 N in WTCR but he also had a number of other campaigns running too. This included various GT and LMP3 activities as well as 11 drivers to look after. “Basically, I was always at a race and always busy juggling everything and I didn’t really have time to think about anything else. So, it was the opposite of what I had planned to do. But it’s OK. It was worth it.” With 2019 looming, there is no chance to rest even

now. Yvan is busy prepping for next season as he recently announced his bid to return to the WTCR with the new Lynk & Co team. “Gabriele said I am not allowed to retire. . . and as it turns out, to lose by just three points means I am still pretty fast, so I guess it was too early!” This Swedish team were winners of both driver and team championships in 2017 and Yvan is a major part of its 2019 assault on the WTCR. “I am pretty confident we will do well but it is too early to say for sure. The car is well born but to say if it is faster or slower is impossible right now. With the change in the regulations too it isn’t just about the car and the team now, there are so many other factors to take in to consideration; the BoP [Balance of Performance] is one of the hardest things to manage. We will see.” When you look at the team announcements for the 2019 season it seems that everyone has stepped up a gear and looks to be one of the most competitive seasons to date.

The driver line-up includes the return of not only Nicky Catsburg and Augusto Farfus but Yvan’s new Lynk & Co team-mate (in addition to Thed Bjork), multiple WTCC Champion Andy Priaulx. “It will be great racing alongside Andy again. We have had some fantastic, close battles for the title bid in the past in WTCC. He is an excellent driver and is a great addition to the team. I feel like we have a very strong line up.” Yvan lost the championship in 2007 to Andy Priaulx and that was Yvan’s toughest moment of his entire career. “It was down to the last race. We were in Macau and I was leading right to the final lap; then I suffered a mechanical failure. The car stopped and I lost the championship. When you lose a race like that you are reminded of it forever more. I have never forgotten that moment. Hopefully the new stories between Andy and I will be more positive on my side!” It will be great to see these two powerhouses back in action, although it is Rob Huff who is W W W. He is by far the toughest driver to battle against and I really enjoy it when I end up behind him or if I see him coming up behind me. I know that I am on for a tough fight and a real race and they have been some of my most memorable moments.” Although when asked what his most memorable win is, he replies: “My next one!” Andy Priaulx is, I know, is working hard towards getting physically ready for 2019, spending time in the gym but Yvan still has no time for this. “I’d like to and always did in the past but I really don’t have time for ‘proper exercise’. Just working hard is what keeps me fit and firing right now. I do enjoy cycling though and so when I do have the odd moment to myself, I do that.” W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

Did you also know that Yvan Muller is a keen gardener? “I love it. When I have true down-time I will potter around and work in the garden. I love nature. Around my house is incredible countryside so sometimes I just go for a quiet walk in the forest. It helps calm my mind, stop me thinking and gives me a chance to unwind. I hope I get to do more of that in the future.” If running his own team and an array of other drivers is not enough, Yvan also goes to Lapland around this time for two days driving. Two extremely full days in fact. “Last year I did 600kms in two days. That’s plenty! I will do the same this year at some point.” Not yet though. He worked up until 23rd December and started again at the beginning of January, prepping for the 9th, when everything is due back from its long shipment from Macau. “I get bored when I stop for too long! I love spending

time with the family, of course, but they are always with me and they are also happier being active. I just want the season to begin again properly.” Touring cars is clearly Yvan’s passion through and through. “I am very happy with how the championship (WTCR) is now. The cost is correct. The manufacturers are not so involved which is better and I hope we stay like this for the future. “At the end of the day, no-one is perfect. Least of all me. Of course, I have made mistakes over my time – doesn’t everyone - but I have done 12 years of touring cars and in the last 11 years I’ve finished in the top three and that is what I will fight hard to make happen again in 2019.” ■

Mercedes-AMG unveils its limited-edition AMG GT R PRO, clearly ready to pounce on to that top step of the podium, alongide an equally honed GT t its debut four years ago, the AMG GT confidently sought out competition on the global sports car scene and conquered a large part of the market. Now this athlete from Affalterbach not only returns to the start line honed further but accompanied by a new, limitededition AMG GT R PRO. This top-of-the-range R PRO is characterised by improved

driving dynamics, especially on the racetrack. Invaluable experience from the AMG GT3 and GT4 racing cars were included in its development and the measures from motorsport can be clustered into four areas: suspension, lightweight construction, aerodynamics and looks. “The AMG GT embodies the core of our brand, “Driving Performance”, in a unique way.” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of

Mercedes-AMG. “At its debut four years ago, it not only turned heads of customers and sports car enthusiasts but created new dimensions in the competitive environment. “No other production model of Mercedes-AMG presently is as close to motor racing as this new AMG GT R PRO. The agile responses to all driver commands and the overall performance delivers even more of that incomparable feeling that our racing drivers experience on the track.” In fact, the GT R PRO has already demonstrated its performance potential on the racetrack. In early November, AMG brand ambassador and AMG GT3 racing driver Maro Engel completed a circuit of the Nürburgring North Loop in 7.04.632 minutes, driving a still disguised AMG GT R

PRO. This was a considerable improvement on the previous time for the AMG GT R. With an autumnal ambient temperature of 12 degrees, this test clearly demonstrated the great potential of the AMG flagship model. The R PRO features the new AMG coil-over suspension, delivering more choices for tailoring the set-up to a particular circuit. The driver is not only able to set the spring preload length mechanically but can adjust the compression and rebound of the dampers. This is done quickly and precisely, without tools, via a click system with an integral adjustment dial on the damper. The compression rate is adjusted separately for high-speed and low-speed movements. This means that the settings can be dialled-in for slow and fast compression

movements and enables the driver to influence the body dive and roll as well as the traction of the AMG GT R PRO more selectively. Meanwhile, the front axle is fitted with an adjustable torsion bar made of lightweight carbon fibre. Its counterpart at the rear is made of steel, is likewise adjustable and also saves weight due to its hollow tube design. The AMG GT R is already fitted with Uniball spherical bearings at the lower wishbones of the rear axle but the PRO version gets these bearings for the upper wishbones too. They are significantly more wear-resistant than conventional wishbone bearings and, due to their design, have no play, which means toe-in and camber do not change, even under high loads. As a result, the AMG GT R PRO can be driven with even

more precision. The carbon-fibre shear panel in the underbody of the rearend also contributes to the high handling precision. This lightweight and rigid element stiffens the rear-end structure and as a result adds even more stability to the body shell. The standard delivery of the AMG GT R PRO includes the Track Package (not for USA, Canada and China). It comprises a roll-over protection system, enclosed four-point safety harnesses for driver and front passenger, and a 2-kg fire extinguisher (both scopes exclusively for use on the racetrack). brake callipers as well as by the AMG bucket seats made of clear-coated carbon fibre (again not for USA, Canada and China). The aerodynamic, finetuning increases the overall performance of the AMG GT R PRO too. The redesigned front apron has been fitted with two flics at the sides made of clear-coated carbon fibre. The lower flics transition virtually seamlessly into the front splitter, which was extended further forward and is held by small metal braces. These stabilise the front splitter at higher speeds. The louvres (air slots) in the front wings effectively vent the wheel arches and consequently contribute to reducing front-axle lift. At the rear, a clear-coated carbon-fibre aero element at the wheel arch on either side rises up vertically almost to the level of the tail W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

lamps. The interplay of all these measures significantly reduces front-axle lift without negatively impacting the aerodynamic conditions at the rear axle. The active aerodynamics profile in the underbody, the AIRPANEL active air regulation system in the front apron and the large aerofoil on the hatch, are part of the standard specification. In addition, the rear aerofoil is fitted with a spoiler lip (gurney), which increases downforce at the rear axle, and now sits on milled aluminium brackets that underscore the proximity to motor racing. The AMG GT R PRO does not only drive like a racing car, it also looks the part. The standard-fit Carbon Package comes with front splitter, fins in the wings, trim strips in the side sills and a diffuser with high-

quality clear-coated carbonfibre finish emphasise the proximity to motorsport, as does the redesigned carbon-fibre roof with lowered centre. The marque’s special status is also underscored by the car wrap with racing stripes running over the bonnet, roof and hatch as well as along the sides of the vehicle. This car wrap is light green exclusively in combination with the selenite grey paint finish. With all other colour variants, the stripes come in dark grey matte. ■

Pro driver Bobby Thompson is all about appearance both on and off the track but don’t let looks deceive you. This young BTCC racer is 100% focused on winning in style obby Thompson looks across Team HARD’s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC ) workshop at his stripped-down, matt black Volkswagen CC. This touring car currently resides in a busy corner of Bobby’s team garage, just a stone’s throw from Brands Hatch, site of the last round of Bobby’s rookie BTCC season in 2018 and the venue for the first round of his sophomore campaign in 2019. “This time last year I had just

been confirmed as one of the Team HARD drivers for 2018 and it is fair to say it has been a whirlwind ever since,” said the 22-year-old, Hornchurch based driver who admits to feeling slightly braced at the British winter, having taken a trip back to his family’s oval racing roots with a visit to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the NASCAR Cup Series finale. “Watching the BTCC on TV you don’t get the full picture of just how intense the entire event is and as someone who had never done any of the championships on the support package it took me

a couple of meetings just to get up to speed with the pace of the event itself, never mind the pace on track.” Growing up in a motor racing family, Bobby has been around circuits all his life, from watching his Dad, Paul, and Uncle, Steve race firstly in bangers and then Legend Cars. While there is still an affinity for all things oval (indeed when asked which circuit he would like to see replace Rockingham on the BTCC calendar he halfjokingly replied Arena Essex), the BTCC has been Bobby’s

main focus since his early days in karting. “When I raced in Formula Kart Stars they would have displays of Formula 1 cars at some of the rounds and although they were great to look at and be around, I’ve always had the BTCC in my head as my ultimate goal in racing,” said Bobby. “From a very young age my family has been very honest about what sort of budget we had to go racing with. When we finished karting I have always known that,without sponsorship, it is

game over. My Dad is a plumber and for the first few years it was just me, him and one or two of his friends helping out. Although it was tough going from race to race not knowing if you would be able to carry on, I wouldn’t change the memories of that for the world and it has meant that, as a family, we have become very proactive in looking for sponsors and then looking after them when they come on board.” Armed with a small but hard-working team behind him, Bobby spends his time out of his touring car in a car, working as an ARDS race instructor and driver coach for a number of junior drivers. This is something that he says goes a long way to dispel the myth that he is just a pretty face. “Being an Essex boy and proud of it I do get a bit of friendly stick in the paddock and on social media about my ‘look’ but that’s just me. I haven’t got a problem with the references to TOWIE [The Only Way is Essex] and stuff like that but my team knows

that I’m deadly serious about the engineering side of things. Sometimes, when I first meet people, it comes as a bit of a shock to them but in a good way. I love having a laugh and a joke with the fans and some of my fellow drivers but being in the BTCC is my dream and I’ve learned very quickly that if you are not on your ‘A Game’ in and out of the car in every session it really does show up on the time sheets. “So to sit here, three months before the start of the season, with the budget in place for my second year in touring cars is a massive weight off my shoulders. I can really push ahead and focus on what needs to be done to the car for the first time really in my whole career. I know I had been announced as a BTCC driver this time last year but like I said, the BTCC is so intense and competitive I don’t think any rookie can really get their head around what needs to be done engineering and set-up wise until they have properly got to grips with actually being in the

BTCC first.” Arriving on the BTCC scene on the back of a dominant titlewinning campaign in the 2017 VW Cup Series, Bobby admits to setting high expectations for himself, even though he was largely an unknown quantity among his fellow drivers. While there were occasional issues with the car itself that masked Bobby’s raw speed, a top 10 finish in Snetterton’s Diamond Double race and a stunning drive through the pack to claim seventh place in the finale BTCC race at Rockingham showed the rest of the paddock that Bobby was not there to simply make up the numbers. “Rockingham was probably the biggest emotional rollercoaster I’ve ever been on. Our car was just so fast and even though we didn’t get the results we deserved in the first two races, something inside me just told me that we could still get points from the back of the grid in the last race. It didn’t matter who I was racing and how many races or championships they had won.

I just felt able to make moves and clean passes all race and the tyres just stayed with me all the way through. There were definitely some emotional scenes in the pits after the race, especially from my Dad as my family has sacrificed so much to keep me racing. It was special to re-pay all their hard work on the biggest stage in British motorsport.” Looking ahead to the 2019 season, Bobby knows that if he is to become further established within the BTCC family, occasional top 10s have to become regular point-scoring drives. He points to several of the key changes that Team HARD has made during the off-season as the reason why staying with Tony Gilham’s four-car operation was the right decision to make. “I did have some interest from one or two other teams at the end of last season and we had a long discussion with Tony about what we all needed to do better in 2019 if we were going to move up the grid. Tony has been very loyal to me since W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

at the base with his engineering expertise has been a huge plus, the team has done more development on the cars than I’ve ever seen before, and so far in advance ahead of our 2019 campaign. Being able to

continue to work with Mike on the engineering side and share ideas with him and to have a lot of the same faces around me who know how I work and what I want from the car means I am going to be better prepared than ever when the season finally arrives. I’m not into making predictions anymore because you can never predict what will happen in the BTCC but I know for a fact that we will be faster, stronger and capable of taking on the big guns when the lights go out at Brands this April.”■

he final months of 2018 were pretty memorable for former Formula 1 racer Karun Chandhok. Not only did he become a father for the first time and announce that he was re-joining the Sky Sports Formula 1 presenting team for the 2019 season, but he also officially opened the first MotorsportDays LIVE show at Silverstone. So an ideal opportunity to chat with this talented racer – who had just hot-footed it to the Northamptonshire track from the Mexico Grand Prix pit lane. Not surprisingly, our conversation started with Lewis Hamilton’s victory at Hermanos Rodriguez. “Obviously it was a very special weekend for Lewis – winning his fifth World Championship,” said Karun. “It was an amazing achievement and something only two people in the history of our sport [Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher] have achieved before. As a Grand Prix I think it was fantastic. It is the first time since Monaco that we have had three teams in contention on merit and in a straight fight, with Max once again underlying why he is a future star and one of those special, once-in-ageneration talents. “On the whole I think the double header – Austin [USA] and Mexico – were both very exciting races. Kimi winning in Austin was hugely popular, despite the fact that he never says anything.” The Formula 1 fan base has a bit of a Marmite (love/hate) relationship with Lewis Hamilton, despite him being the most successful British driver in the history of Formula One. Karun Chandhok is no stranger to the Formula One circus himself – as a former driver and a TV presenter – so does he think that young drivers can learn from Hamilton? “I think the key thing is that Lewis delivers when it counts on a Saturday and a Sunday,” said

“GEORGE RUSSELL IS GOING INTO FORMULA 1 WITH HIS EYES WIDE OPEN. HE RECOGNISES THAT HE IS NOT WALKING INTO A TEAM LIKE LEWIS DID AT MCLAREN. IT’S GOING TO BE HARD WORK, HE IS GOING TO HAVE TO GRAFT BUT GEORGE SEEMS UP FOR THE CHALLENGE” Karun. “Every human being is different – I think that is good – if we were all the same life would be boring. Lewis gets his mental stimulation and his way to wound down by staying busy. He manages to keep up all of his training discipline while jetting across to do his fashion shows and his stuff in LA and all of the rest of it. “At the end of the day, when you get to qualifying, especially when you get to Q3, you have got two sets of tyres so you have got to nail the lap. There is nobody better on the planet since Ayrton Senna than Lewis Hamilton and as long as he keeps delivering that it is quite hard to fault all the other stuff that he’s doing, or to question all the other stuff he’s doing. I think ultimately it comes down to what keeps him in the right mental space when he arrives at the racetrack to deliver.” There will be a new, British driver on the grid next season, George Russell. What advice would Karun give him before he starts his first Formula 1 season? “George doesn’t need any advice from me! I think that a) he’s a fast racing driver and b) I have known George for a very long time. I first met him here at Silverstone, he was racing in Formula Ford at the time and his team-mate was a young kid called Arjun Maini who I manage. Arjun was actually a lodger in George’s sister’s house

so we got to know George quite well. I have followed George throughout his career and he is very down to earth. “Williams is having a tough period at the moment and we don’t yet know what next year’s car is going to be like,” Karun added. “Certainly, George is going into it with his eyes wide open. He recognises that he is not walking into a team like Lewis did at McLaren, winning races straight away. It’s going to be hard work, he is going to have to graft but George seems up for the challenge. “I had lunch with him last Sunday in Mexico and he spent his first weekend with Williams, shadowing the team. It was his first time being in the meetings, seeing how they operate! He seems really motivated and hungry for the challenge ahead. So how different was Karun’s journey into the heady heights of Formula 1? “Coming from a country like India was always going to be a challenge. We have 1.2billion people and only two Formula 1 drivers, so that kind of sums up the challenge involved in some ways. We never had a go-kart track when I grew up – I have never did a go-kart race in my life.” He continued: “It is only when you get to the UK and start competing against people in Formula 3, who’ve been doing

10 or 12 years of karting before that, that that you realise the disadvantage. They put a new set of tyres on and know how to extract the grip straight away and know how to drive on cold tyres or how to drive when conditions are a bit tricky! I had never driven in the wet until I rocked up to do Formula 3, which is bonkers but it’s the truth! “So there were certainly a lot of disadvantages. The advantage, from a marketing standpoint, was that you had a story that was different and that helped to open certain doors with sponsors, that sort of thing. “Really the biggest challenge to any driver is that step into Formula 1. There have been thousands of drivers who have continued until Formula 3000 or Formula 3 and haven’t made that final step. A lot of it is about timing. Look at George Russell. He is in the right place at the right time. The driver market in F1 has been more fluid than at any time before and all of a sudden a couple of seats have opened up. Politics have played a hand and the fact that Esteban Ocon is not going to have a seat and all of a sudden George is there to capitalise on it. Karun continued: “It was a similar thing for me. I did GP2 in 2007 – 2009 and in 2010 the FIA opened up the entry to four new teams. All of a sudden it meant that there were eight new seats on the grid and that opened the door for people like Bruno Senna, Lucas di Grassi, Nico Hulkenberg and me, who were not in F1. We’d all raced at GP2 together and were able to make that step up. “Although, to take a step back, I had run out of money in 2005 and stopped my F3 season halfway through and had actually accepted a job to be a team manager for an F3 team in 2006. We were sorting out the paperwork for my work permit to come back as a team manager and I got this deal to race in Asia. W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

“ALL OF A SUDDEN I WENT FROM DOING A DAY JOB AS A TEAM MANAGER TO RACING GP2. THAT IS JUST THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME AND SOMETIMES I THINK THERE IS AN ELEMENT OF THAT IN THE SPORT” “Along the way I met Bernie [Ecclestone] and we started doing some things for the Indian Grand Prix. Bernie introduced me to Helmut Marko and Dany Bahar, who at that time was at Red Bull. We got talking and it opened the door for me to be on the Red Bull Programme. All of a sudden I went from doing a day job as a team manager to racing GP2. That is just the right place at the right time and sometimes I think there is an element of that in the sport.” So what chance do the aspiring young hopefuls of today have of getting into Formula 1. Former racer and MSV founder Jonathan Palmer is thought to have said that the door to Formula 1 has been bricked up. Does Karun concur with that theory at all? “I don’t think the door has been bricked up at all,” said

Karun., “otherwise people like George [Russell] and Pierre Gasly wouldn’t have the opportunity and it now looks like Alexander Albon, another F2 driver, is going to get a chance. There are plenty of young drivers coming in. You have got Charles Leclerc, Verstappen has just turned 20 so many young drivers now on the F1 grid. “However, I would say that it is much harder to get to Formula 1 as there are only 10 teams. You think back to the early ‘90s, you had free qualifying because you had 32 cars on the grid. Those seats aren’t available anymore. “People often ask me ‘what was the point of Minardi’, or ‘what was the point of these teams running around at the back?’ The point was to give these young drivers an opportunity, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber etc. I think F1 does

miss that. You do miss having two or three small teams that open the doors for young drivers and because of that we are seeing more people go down the sportscar route and GT racing. The latter has got enormous grids at the moment – sportscar racing with Le Mans prototypes has got huge grids. You are getting a lot of young drivers who are committing very early on in their careers, saying ‘I don’t think I am going to get to F1 so I am going to go down this path’.” In fact, Karun is more concerned about keeping the personnel that Formula 1 has already attracted and so has called for the end of Friday practice. “The Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, could underline why we need to get rid of Friday practice. First of all there are 21 grands prix in a year. It is all well and good for me – when I was driving or now working in television – I rock up on a Thursday morning and leave on a Sunday night. For the mechanics and personnel involved in the teams, they leave home on a Monday, maybe Tuesday and are there for a week at a time. So that is 147 days that they are out of the country and away from their families, away from home. Plus the testing, throw in all the other things and all of a sudden it’s quite hard. “Teams are struggling to hold on to personnel. People are

thinking of work/life balance and thinking, ‘actually we we could go to WEC or Formula E and do 10 or 12 weekends; earn a bit less money but we get to spend more time with our families. I think having an extra day at home for people would be good first of all. Secondly, it would be cheaper for the teams, have less running. “A lot of fans have tweeted me saying: ‘We’ve paid to have three days of track activity and we feel cheated’. Well, I think you will have a better grand prix on the Sunday if the teams haven’t had Friday. We saw that in Austin. Friday was a washout, they didn’t have reams of data to look at, they couldn’t get the drivers in the simulators on Friday night studying and replaying the data from the track. Therefore, there was a degree of unpredictability going into Sunday. “The same in Mexico. They didn’t know what the tyres were going to do, they didn’t know what the degradation of the strategy was going to be and there were unknowns and we had two great grands prix. So to me it’s going to be cheaper and be more unpredictable. So, if you are a fan, wouldn’t you rather see a better race on Sunday rather than cars going around and around in circles in a meaningless session on a Friday?” Unsurprisingly, Karun already

has ideas on how to use that Friday for other things. “Maybe make the drivers do fan events; get a load of older cars out and do some demos, I do some stuff with Williams and the older cars. Bring the Mansell 92 car and do a demo; the fans love it. Or use the Friday for young driver tests – if a promoter, say Silverstone, is keen to have contemporary F1 running on a Friday, force the teams to do a one-hour P1 session but only with young drivers. One car each and it means that the young drivers get a chance to get mileage. Now that testing is banned pretty much in season – they only get two days – it would mean that all these F2 drivers get an opportunity to drive a Formula 1 car.” Of course, when Karun Chandhok was racing there were no shows like MotorsportDays LIVE, which enables drivers to test on track before committing to a series. So how helpful would a show like this be to those just starting their own motorsport journey? “I think it would be really helpful, particularly as you are able to scale the event, grow the event and get different manufacturers involved,” he said. “If you are planning on getting into a particular championship with multiple manufacturers rather than a single make then it is useful. How do you choose,

for example, if you are going into Formula Ford, to chose to drive a Van Diemen, a Swift or a Minardi or whatever? Similarly, if you are starting off and want to do some club racing do you want to spend your money buying a Radical or do you think, maybe I prefer a saloon car or something a bit different. There is a great deal that you can learn in just 15 minutes driving one of these cars. So there is great value in that. “My own case was a bit unique, a bit different, I followed a trajectory that was well established at the time. Don’t forget that came up at a time when the British Formula 3 was the championship that every young driver aspired to be in. Today it is very different and what we have here at Silverstone with MsD is much more relevant today than it would have been 10 years ago because you have so many different championships. “What does a kid coming out of karting do? Drive LMP3 cars and go down the sportscar route or drive single seaters and try and chase the F1 dream? Or do they choose saloon cars and go down the touring car path? For all of these options there is high value in what is happening here.” ■

and YouTube – make the decision. The result was a GT3 Lamborghini at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina. I’ve driven the circuit before but had to get used to the car first. After a few laps, the times started to come down as I managed to get fully submerged into the sim. This was achievable thanks to DURA’s seat, which is adaptable for all sizes and the pedals can move back a long way. I am 6ft 1in but still had a lot of clearance. With most sims you can go through specific details of your performance but this DURA sim analyses far quicker and in more detail. Comparing

racing lines, throttle control and brake uses are all mapped out in minute detail. This really does highlight any issues or habits you have and allows you to hone in on them and change them. TANTALISINGLY CLOSE THE MCLAREN 720S GT3 STUNS ON GLOBAL RACE DEBUT IN ABU DHABI

he new McLaren 720S GT3 came tantalisingly close to a stunning win on its global, competitive debut at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi in mid-December. The first GT racer designed and built in-house by McLaren Customer Racing, this supercar dominated much of the second half of the race at the Yas Marina Circuit before suspension trouble dropped it to a still impressive fifth place. The car’s pace – plus a trouble-free run for 10 hours in the hands of Ben Barnicoat, Álvaro Parente and Shane van Gisbergen – turned heads in a paddock that included top GT racing cars, teams and drivers from around the world. Run by McLaren Customer Racing, this GT was quick outof-the-box and set encouraging times during the three practice sessions on the Yas Marina circuit – home to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It was in the hunt for pole position in its first qualifying session, with Barnicoat immediately topping the times. Co-drivers Parente and van Gisbergen continued to show impressive pace but the car was pipped at the post by just half a tenth on aggregate times to take second in the GT3 class - ahead of 16 competitors – and third overall on the 33-car grid. The race itself was split into two sixhour events. In the first of these, Barnicoat took the 720S GT3 into the lead after just an hour. The combined efforts of all three drivers and the McLaren Customer Racing team helped keep this McLaren in the hunt for the entire six hours, despite several incidents and two safety car interventions. The team reached the mid-point of the race in second overall and ready to attack from the start of the second race. The second part of the race showed the potential of this new McLaren as the #5 car headed the charge to the flag. Within two laps, Shane van Gisbergen had taken

the lead on the back straight, and by the end of Hour 10, the car had lapped the entire field. Unfortunately, the dream of a win on the car’s global race debut was over moments later when an issue with the right front suspension forced van Gisbergen into the pits for repairs. Rapid work from the team saw the car return to action after just 13 minutes and with McLaren factory driver Barnicoat back behind the wheel, he set about chasing down the leaders. In the closing 90 minutes, the gap was reduced and #5 crossed the line in an impressive fifth place in the GT3 Pro class and eighth overall, completing 309 laps of the Yas Marina circuit. “It’s been a great start to the competitive life of the 720S GT3, which has proven itself against a world-class field. Just as importantly, we have successfully progressed the development programme. I am incredibly proud of the efforts of the team at the circuit and back in Woking, who have achieved this result against world-class opposition,” said Dan Walmsley, Motorsport Director, McLaren Automotive. “The experience of going wheel-towheel with the teams and cars that our customers will be aiming to beat with the 720S GT3 in the future has proved invaluable as we continue to learn lessons about how to get the very best from the car. Add that experience to the vast amount that we have learned during the design, build, testing and development with the McLaren 720S GT3 so far and we are growing in confidence about the prospects for the newest racing member of the McLaren family.” The McLaren Customer Racing team will continue the 720 GT3 test and development programme, ahead of homologation early in 2019. This will enable the car to compete in a variety of GT3 racing championships around the world. ■

PASSPORTS REQUIRED THE PURE MCLAREN GT SERIES FIXTURES FOR 2019 HAVE BEEN UNVEILED AND INCLUDES AN EXCITING NEW FIXTURE IN BAHRAIN he FIA-approved Pure McLaren GT Series Championship will be going truly international in only its second season. The 2019 fixtures list for these McLaren 570S GT4s features six rounds, starting at Portimao, Portugal, in May. This is one of five European tracks featured before all competitors head to the Bahrain International Circuit in November 2019. This will be the first time that the Championship has ventured beyond Europe. “After the success of season one, the 2019 Pure McLaren GT Championship calendar promises our drivers even more fun and excitement with the addition of a track like Bahrain,” said Jolyon Nash of McLaren Automotive. “This Series is all

about McLaren enabling its customers to experience the exhilaration of racing our 570S GT4 cars, while also allowing them to improve their race craft alongside meeting like-minded racers in a relaxed, informal, family-friendly setting.” Five of the circuits are current Formula 1 venues, including Spa-Francorchamps, the site of Bruce McLaren’s 1968 Grand Prix victory for the marque he founded. In addition to competing for the overall title, those drivers who have only held their racing licence for less than 12 months and have not competed higher than club level in that year, also have the chance of winning the Bruce McLaren Cup. The 2019 Championship format remains unchanged – six rounds, with two races per

weekend. Each competitor can take advantage of testing on the Friday, with two practice sessions, a 20-minute qualifying session and a 30-minute race on both the Saturday and the Sunday. unday 14th October 2018 is a date that will forever be remembered in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) history books. This was the last time that the three prominent German luxury brands – MercedesBenz, BMW and Audi – raced around the 4.574km Hockenheimring circuit. Add to that auspicious moment some V8 power totalling a combined 9000bhp roaring into life and it was the perfect last hurrah before the “Class

One” era brings back turbo power for 2019. The final day of competition also delivered closure for the brand featuring the “three-pointed star”. All three titles were secured by Mercedes-AMG Motorsport on the 20th and final race of the year. The 2018 season saw a major shift in how DTM would improve excitement, for the fans at the racetrack and for those watching at home. The introduction of Indystyle restarts after a safety car period, plus an increase in horsepower, coupled with a 30% reduction in

aerodynamics dislodged Audi as one of the title contenders early on in the campaign. Gerhard Berger, the ITR e.V. Chairman, has done much to help the ever-growing prominence of the series, with guaranteed action being one the promises he has made. The way that 2018 played out echoed this ex-Formula 1 driver’s sentiments for many different reasons. The door rubbing between eventual drivers’ champion Gary Paffett (MercedesAMG Motorsport) and BMW Motorsport’s Timo Glock for more than 50 kilometres on that first weekend’s second

race at the Baden-Württemberg track, had everyone enthralled. Both experienced veterans played hard and fair throughout the octane-fuelled encounter. Glock’s post-race, expletive-filled, planned radio transmission expressed the desire from many, including the DTM race winner himself, that Mercedes should make a U-turn on its decision to leave the series. The Stuttgart marque was clearly the class of the field all season, even though Glock and his BMW were in the mix for first six races. In fact, the leading light for the Munich manufacturer would actually be two-time champion, Marco Wittmann. He had struggled whilst Glock shone in the early stages, but the Fürth-based racer then started a comeback. Audi Sport’s defending champion, René Rast, had the most dramatic exit of any of the 18 drivers competing fulltime in the series. He ended up rolling his Audi Sport RS5 DTM during the first race of the weekend on the infield, putting his hopes of being the W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

first driver since Timo Scheider to secure back-to-back titles at risk. Then the Bregenz-based racing driver mounted a comeback that no one could see coming. Having completed a clean sweep of victories in the final six races, the 32-year-old Rast finished just four points behind Paffett, setting a new race win streak record in the process. Paul Di Resta was also in contention in the title fight as the Scotsman helped Mercedes set a pole-position run that saw the team, run by HWA, take nine pole positions from race one in Hungary through to the first ever night race at the Misano Circuit in Italy. Di Resta was regularly swapping the lead in the drivers’ standings with Paffett. In the end Di Resta missed out on the title by 22 points. Spain’s Daniel Juncadella had his chances after a sabbatical from the series in 2017; the matador returning to attend to unfinished business. The Barcelona racer took his Mercedes to three pole

positions at Norisring, Brands Hatch and Red Bull Ring, including his first and only career win at the Kent-based circuit. Meanwhile, newcomers Philipp Eng and Joel Eriksson, who had joined BMW following the departures of Tom Blomqvist and Maxime Martin at the end of 2017, showed their pedigree. They took pole positions, wins and podiums during the most exciting season in recent times, with Eng heading in from sports cars and Eriksson from Formula 3. However, it was a jubilant

Gary Paffett who achieved his goal of becoming a two-time champion. The Briton has been the bridesmaid several times over the past 13 years, ending up second-best most recently to former stablemate Bruno Spengler in 2012, when Paffett was leading coming into the final round. So the emotions hit their high point when he crossed the finish line in 2018 – Mercedes-AMG’s mission was finally achieved. Its run of success speaks for itself and it was not just Paffett who shed tears of joy on that day. Mercedes-AMG has been

part of the DTM paddock for the past 5½ years and it has been a pleasure to have got to know so many wonderful characters within this very close outfit. HWA will remain in DTM next season, as part of the R Motorsport team – they are bringing Aston Martin into the series – but it won’t feel the same without the team’s passion, commitment and fullblown motivation to win, above all else. So the brand may be leaving for Formula E but I for one won’t be saying “goodbye”, rather “Wir sehen uns”. ■

With dual electric motors, all-wheel drive and an aggressive, restyled body shape, this purpose-built car demonstrates how Nissan’s electric vehicle technology can deliver exciting yet quiet, zero-emission power – a key component of the company’s NISMO vision. The model is equipped with advanced battery technology and drivetrain

It is slightly longer than its predecessor – an overall length of 4,546mm – and a wheelbase that measures 2,750mm. he 2017 season was going so well for Tiago Monteiro. Everything was going to plan. By the end of round six of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCR) in Argentina, Tiago was well on track to win the, being 12 points clear of Polestar Cyan Racing’s Thed Bjork. Things were going extremely well - his best season to date. However, everything changed in September. A high-speed crash during testing in Barcelona in the Honda Civic WTCC test car, following

a failure in the brakes, called an abrupt halt to Tiago’s hopes. He spent two weeks in intensive care; he had suffered major nerve compression and had extensive eye damage. Doctors were not very hopeful for a full recovery. There was definitely no chance Tiago would make it to the first of four fly away races – the first being Honda’s “home race” in Suzuka. “I want to race – I will race” is how Tiago ended our last interview for Motorsport Days in the 2017 Pro Annual. Fast forward one year and I caught up with an emotional Tiago after his first weekend back racing in Suzuka. He had picked up exactly where he left off. “I am so relieved I cannot tell you. I didn’t want to just get back in a car - I wanted to be back and at the same level

“I could have retired. I have done 22 years of racing – 10 in touring cars. I could have easily stopped and would have been proud of my achievements. But I just can’t. I can’t give it up. I still want to be fighting. I want to feel that adrenalin and I hope to go on for many more years” before I stopped and I pretty much was,” revealed Tiago. “The feeling was incredible. It was all so emotional from beginning to end. I am quite an emotional man anyway – I wear my heart on my sleeve but this was extreme. Getting to the airport knowing I was flying out to actually race again, arriving at such a symbolic track was insane. Even going to scrutineering was emotional! “When you realise where you’ve come from and what you’ve been through to get there and then you see the faces of the mechanics, the team, it’s overwhelming. I was so thankful every step of the way. The welcome back from everyone at every stage was incredible. Everyone in the paddock was so supportive.” There was a wonderful moment on the Friday when all the other drivers prepared to head out for free practice and instead of heading straight out W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

on track, one by one they all lined up along the pitlane, got out and clapped Tiago, letting him go out first on track. “It was such an intense moment and I was just so grateful that everyone had my back so much. I was crying as I drove down. I was meant to be speaking to the television feed but I am not sure anyone would have been able to understand me as I could barely speak for the tears.” Tiago went out on track with zero expectations that weekend. He just wanted to get a feel for the car and team again. With absolutely no way of knowing if he would be capable of fighting for any sort of position, he took all the pressure off and just enjoyed the experience. That said, in true champ style, he was not far off the pace at all. “I was amazed. My lap times were better than I ever anticipated.” He added: “The Friday was super tough as there was a lot to deal with in one day.

Unusually, we had both the two free practices and qualifying all in one day so the pressure was even higher than it would have been on any other race weekend. That was a lot to deal with in itself but I felt I coped well and to only be seven-tenths off the pace was pretty good.” It is fantastic to be able to speak to “Tiago the racing driver” again. He has had a hugely difficult year – full of doubts and pain – but it has been an evolution. Apart from the physical pain initially and the long, hard recovery process, the toughest thing Tiago has had to deal with is that he never truly knew if he was going to have a real recovery. After six months of hell, his progress has been incredible and with that came an abundance of motivation and a positive mindset. “To not know if you are going to be able to have a regular, normal life again is awful. To see how much it affected my family,

I am so relieved I cannot tell you. I didn’t want to just get back in a car I wanted to be back and at the same level before I stopped and I pretty much was. The feeling was incredible”

my children and friends was really difficult. To see everyone racing was hard too – not knowing if I’d ever be able to do the same again. It was when it became a reality that I could come back to racing that turned everything around for me. That motivation made everything easier and suddenly everything went so fast. Having good news like that was unreal, having come from such a low place.” Tiago has come back stronger, having learnt so much from it all both professionally and personally. “I have learned to give value to many things that didn’t seem so important before – to focus on what really matters. I am a stronger person psychologically than I was before and I am determined that I will be stronger physically too.” The new touring car series is a huge success and, not surprisingly, Tiago wants to get back to it properly. “You never really know how a new

championship will turn out but it has started well. Great fights, unpredictable results, close competition. It has a very good mixture of ages and talents; a good mix of brands and cars. It was a huge step up for the championship and well on the right road and I am looking forward to the start of the 2019 Championship, which will be even tougher than 2018.” So, after standing on the sidelines for the past year, will we definitely see him behind the wheel of a Honda again next year? “I cannot say for certain until Honda announces its official plan but I am contracted to them again. If it does happen and I decide to come back fully – and I get the definite green light from the doctors and insurance - then yes, I want to do it. I want to keep going for many years to come. As long as I feel good and competitive then I won’t stop. I want to be like Gabriele

Tarquini and Yvan Muller.” No plans to retire just yet then? “Well, I could have retired. I have done 22 years of racing - 10 in touring cars. I could have stopped easily and would have been proud of my achievements. But I just can’t. I can’t give it up. I still want to be fighting. rying to build a racing circuit in the Europe pretty much stops there. Noise limits, infrastructure, location, environment; all these things must be addressed, although some circuits have managed to break the mould with a hefty whack of investment. So, it is a massive loss to motorsport to lose a circuit such as Rockingham. The UK has a massive reach of over 35,000 Motorsport UK licence holders. Although, in reality, there are only a handful of circuits of top pedigree to choose from or which feature on most driversâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wish lists for a

It worked, it had the infrastructure, adhering to noise limits and location. But it can also make a lot of money as a car storage facility race season. This has resulted in many championships looking at circuits outside the UK for the occasional race. The new TCR Championship in 2019 will feature as part of its European, bigger brother series. Even Jonathan Palmer, a mere track god, who has taken over circuits such as Snetterton and Donington, has had to deal with major restrictions.

Take a look at Brands Hatch for example. Inaugurated in 1950, but in the present day has neighbour issues. Limited running on the GP circuit to appease the locals results in exclusive and expensive track time on such an amazing circuit which is almost 80 years old! So it is sad to receive the news that Rockingham Motor Speedway has been sold. You

It worked, it had the infrastructure, adhering to noise limits and location. But it can make a lot of money as a car storage facility which it will become. This is why I felt compelled to write this article. As a racer, I enjoyed the slippery circuit and was lucky enough to stand on the top spot. The grandstand views, space and challenging circuit were brilliant and I include Brook as one of my favourite corners leading onto a

straight. Although I would have liked to of seen a few changes over the years to the infield, making it bigger and better, but Rockingham has always been a great circuit. What a great history it has had in such a short period. Rockingham opened in 2001, after a spend of £45million, with the bold tag line of “Europe’s fastest racing Circuit”. A true fact; the fastest ever lap on the oval was achieved by Tony Kanaan. He registered 24.719 seconds at an average speed of 215.397mph in a Lola-Ford, CART, overlooked by more than 52,000 seats which unfortunately rarely got filled. W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . What a great history it has had in such a short period. It opened in 2001, after a spend of £45million, with the bold tag line of “Europe’s fastest racing Circuit

When booking a Rockingham track day one had a choice of more than13 configurations with The International Super Sportscar Circuit (ISSC) Long being the favourite and used by the likes of the British Touring Car Championship. This resulted in the famous fight scene between Matt Neal and Jason Plato in qualifying, where their confrontation spilled into the pits. So Rockingham was a circuit that was always in the news. We have also seen a circuit dedicated to oval racing. Rockingham organised and funded American-style Stockcar racing on the oval from 2001 to the end of 2007. Originally known as ASCAR, the series changed its name to “Days of Thunder”, and then to SCSA (Stock Car Speed Association), before re-branding to the MAC Tools V8 Trophy for its final season in 2007. variants of the American “ASA National-Tour”. After the recent sale of the venue, Rockingham held a “super send-off” to mark its final day as a racing circuit on 24 November 2018. The race winner was Peter Hardman in the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) Sports & GT race. A few track days concluded Rockingham’s on-track activity

and sadly much of the site will now be demolished to become a logistics hub for automotive logistic companies. So thank you Rockingham and everyone that has worked, participated or watched motorsport. We hope we see the gates open again in the future... fingers crossed. ■

he innovative G1 Series has lofty ambitions – to revolutionise racing. This single-make race series aims to provide data to both fans and drivers and change the way racing series will run throughout the world. The G1 plan is quite simple – deliver content to fans to create an exciting and engaging viewing experience while giving drivers the data they need to improve and grow. Launched this year and delivering a second racing season in Varano, Italy, in 2019, the G1 Series aims to connect drivers and fans on one platform. Another unusual addition to this series that the all the G1 drivers will compete in virtual races too. These will count towards the overall series points total score. So, by bringing the gamer and the fan into the motorsport mix, Griiip is probably the only company in the world that is looking to blend the virtual and real motorsport worlds together. ■

On the cusp of a new motorsport season, we shine a spotlight on the Vorsprung Durch Technik brand’s success on the motorsport stage so far and ponder their plans for 2019 and beyond

udi has enjoyed plenty of success in motorsport over the years, recording remarkable achievements in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans race. So, the endurance world was rocked by the announcement in October 2016 that Audi would be ending its LMP1 programme at the end of that year’s season. A decision that meant that the brand was bringing down the curtain on more than a decade of being one of the dominant players of endurance racing. Comments from FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) series boss Gerard Neveu summed up the feelings shared by fans and those involved with the event alike, when he said: “We understand this decision [by Audi], although obviously we regret the departure of a major player in the WEC. Audi has been involved in endurance racing for 15 years, and more particularly in the first five seasons of the WEC. Today we spare a thought first for everyone at Audi Sport and at Team Joest. We offer them our admiration and gratitude for their extraordinary sporting performances in the WEC since 2012.” Indeed, Audi’s performances at the FIA WEC since the new era in endurance racing was ushered in during 2012 is part of motorsport folklore. The German carmaker wasted no time in showcasing its immense capabilities, becoming the first race winner of its category in the new WEC in the 2012 seasonopener. After another seven races, Audi was celebrating again when winning the 2012 FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship. They ended that season 113 points ahead of Toyota (although it should be noted that the Japanese manufacturer only entered the competition from the third round onwards). While Toyota did put up a tougher fight in 2013, Audi made it two FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’

Championship wins on the bounce. The marque’s total points haul of 207 points was 64.5 points ahead of that recorded by Toyota. Although Audi was knocked off the summit a year later when they finished runner-up to Toyota in that same championship. Audi may not have won the title again in their remaining two years in WEC but they always gave the fans plenty to talk about. They began the 2015 FIA WEC season by beating Porsche at Silverstone in a nail-biting race that saw the two teams swapping the lead on numerous occasions. They followed that victory with a first-place finish at Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Audi would eventually finish second once again in the 2015 FIA Manufacturers’ Championship and drove off into the sunset in style by winning the final round of the 2016 WEC season, in Bahrain. Of course, when Audi announced that it was pulling out of WEC, it meant that the German manufacturer would no longer be competing in the world-famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Audi has revelled in this competition over the past couple of decades, with 13 victories recorded since they made their debut with a third-place finish in 1999. While that statistic is impressive in itself — the German car maker is the race’s second most successful manufacturer behind Porsche, who have 18 victories — it is the way it has repeatedly rewritten the history books that is just as remarkable. History was made when the Audi R8

recorded a hat-trick of wins at Le Mans between 2000 and 2002 and when the Audi R10 TDI became the first diesel-powered racing car to take the chequered flag here too. Audi cars fitted with TDI technology have won Le Mans on eight separate occasions The Audi R15 TDI was also able to revel in a 1-2-3 victory in the fastest 24 Hours of Le Mans race in history. The car set a new distance record in the process too. Meanwhile, when the Audi R18 e-tron quattro won Le Mans in 2012, it was first time that a hybrid racing car had won the event. This same vehicle would go on to take victory in the 2013 and 2014 competitions. The German manufacturer would bring the curtain down on its time competing at this French race with back-to-back third-place finishes at the 2015 and 2016 events. At the same time that Audi announced that it was exiting the World Endurance Championship, the German manufacturer’s Chairman Rupert Stadler stated that they were “going to contest the race for the future on electric power”. So how has the decision to focus on Formula E fared for Audi so far? The company had already made history before even completing a lap of a Formula E circuit, as Audi was the first German automobile manufacturer to race in this area of motorsport. Although this was just a sign of things to come as Audi set out to showcase its electrical prowess. Brazilian driver Lucas di Grassi started the Audi Formula E story when he became World

Champion in the 2016/17 season when racing for Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport. Since that key moment, Audi has been involved in the following Formula E feats: •

March 2018: Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler driver Daniel Abt became the first German driver to win a Formula E race — securing the chequered flag at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Mexico City.

•

May 2018: the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team recorded first, second, pole position and fastest race lap at Tempelhof, Berlin. This meant that the team collected a maximum points haul of 47 points, the first time this has been achieved.

•

June 2018: Lucas di Grassi won the first Formula E race to be held in Switzerland, a city circuit around Zurich. This also represented the first international circuit race to be hosted in Switzerland since 1954.

July 2018: Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler completed a fantastic fightback from a relatively slow start to the 2017/18 Formula E season. They were 74 points behind rivals Techeetah after seven races and just three remaining, but went on to clinch the team’s maiden ABB FIA Formula E Championship by two points in some thrilling racing in New York.

If we decide to participate in 2021, we have to decide soon” DIETER GASS Audi is hoping it can maintain the momentum through the 2018/19 season. It will be bringing its second-generation Formula E car, the Audi e-tron FE05, on to the track, with Di Grassi and Abt remaining as the German manufacturer’s drivers. So, what next for this German marque? Will it be taking its first steps into Formula 1? Such a scene seemed very unlikely as recently as 2015, especially when an Audi spokesperson told BBC Sport: “The current situation is that Audi definitely has no intention to enter Formula 1.” Although there appears to have been a change in Audi’s feelings since then. This is because the German manufacturer stated that it was not ruling out entering Formula 1 in time for the new engine regulations, which are being introduced in 2021. Maybe more significantly, Audi participated in talks about the future of Formula 1’s engine rules during 2017? Audi Motorsport Chief Dieter Gass commented: “Like all other potential manufacturers, we were invited by the FIA and have discussed a possible participation. he world of karting continues to be an ultra-competitive and high-octane filled arena. It is one of the main building blocks towards a future that will surely see some amazing young talents reach the higher echelons of the racing ranks, including Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship. You could class all of these gifted young racers as “stars of the future” but even among this talented group there are always those who catch the eye for standout performances and a sheer determination to win. Throughout my travels this year as a karting commentator in Europe, there has been a handful of drivers who have stood out. Although it has not been an easy task as there is such a huge depth and breadth of quality racing drivers out there to choose from. My top five here really are just the tip of the iceberg!

HANNES MORIN

SWEDEN - 16 YEARS OLD

This young, hard-charging Swede, who is part of the Morin Racing Academy, has made his mark in the Senior Max division this season, having been able to compete not just in his native country, but also across Europe. Based just outside Umeå, more than 600 kilometres north of Stockholm, this Dan Holland W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

Racing driver made history in October when clinching the first Rotax Max Euro Trophy title. This was despite a topsy-turvy season in the Senior division, suffering dramas in his home venue of Kristianstad and the penultimate round in Austria. Morin sealed off title victory though in superb style at the ProKart Raceland facility in Wackersdorf, Bavaria, in the last weekend of September, taking two wins in the last two finals of the year. This 16-year-old, who started karting in 2009, also competed in the ROTAX Max Challenge Grand Finals at the Circuito Internacional Paladino in Brazil. Morin had looked on course to become World Champion but despite taking pole position (best of the 72 drivers in his class) and three successive heat wins, he had to settle with finishing fourth in the world. Hannes may very well be the next best thing to come out of Sweden since the likes of Indycarbound Felix Rosenqvist, Joel Eriksson, currently a BMW works driver in the DTM and Linus Lindqvist, the recently crowned BRDC British Formula 3 Champion. NETHERLANDS - 14 YEARS OLD

Max Verstappen had better watch out for this young “Flying Dutchman”, especially as

this Wogsum-based racer may well be looking at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing in the not too distant future. Mike Van Vugt became a champion in Junior Max in the Euro Trophy, the BNL Karting Series and the Dutch national series and is one of a substantial Dutch contingent that races in multiple championships across Europe. This energetic youngster has a real killer instinct to get to the front in qualifying and lead from lights out. Mike also qualified for the World Finals in Brazil and managed to make his way to the final step of the podium in the Junior Max division, with countryman Robert de Haan winning the final, ahead of Australia’s Jayden Pope. However, Mike showed off his prowess from further down the order, and successfully scythed his way through the field. Does this remind you of someone currently in Formula 1 per chance? AUSTRALIA - 11 YEARS OLD

This young Australian has moved up the ranks over the past few seasons, taking several ROTAX titles in his native country, along with vice-champion status in this year’s Euro Trophy, just behind Mike Van Vugt. With international wins and podiums in the USA at the SKUSA Super Nationals and on the WSK Final Cup in the

latter part of the 2018 season, James Wharton’s prowess as a quick and skilled driver has been showcased greatly. James has also been impressive in his work ethic, which sees him cover more than 700 laps a week. According to his father, Shane, this young racer considers his karting exploits to be his “day job”. Of course, being away from home means Wharton is virtually schooled, so keeping up with his education is another high priority, along with the craft he continues to refine out on track, in categories such as OK Junior, Junior ROTAX and KA100. BELGIUM - 14 YEARS OLD

Following in the footsteps of Belgian racing talent such as Jerome d’Ambrosio, Stoffel Vandoorne, Dries and Lauren Vanthoor, this driver is striding forward figuratively and literally. Kobe Pauwels has already competed in several championships, including the Rotax Max Euro Trophy and the FIA Academy Trophy. In the latter, Kobe would take the final race win of the season, in front of 3,000 people. He only missed out on the title by a solitary point to Spain’s Jose Maria Navalon Boya, in a category that has seen the likes of Esteban Ocon, George W W W. M OTO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

Russell and Charles Leclerc go on to reach the top flight of single-seater racing, Formula 1. The 14-year-old also secured his place in the 2018 ROTAX Max Challenge Grand Finals by taking the Junior Max title in the Belgian Max Challenge Championships with a total of 657 points. His closest rival, Dutchman Justin Polman, was 44 points adrift. Based out of Leopoldsburg, Kobe represented Team Belgium in Brazil in late November against 71 of the best Junior Rotax drivers in the world. Having made it through to the Grand Final, he started in 23rd position but battled his way into the top 10, finishing ninth in this 16-lap race. Kobe is now in the process of making his transition into the senior ranks. He made an impressive dĂŠbut appearance within the class at his home circuit of Karting Genk at the BNL Rotax Golden Trophy, two weeks before the Grand Finals, finishing seventh in the final. MATHILDA OLSSON SWEDEN - 17 YEARS OLD

Another member of the successful Morin Racing Academy, Mathilda Olsson has been very competitive in the Senior ranks this season. Despite suffering a broken knee earlier in the year, it did not stop this Strawberry Racing driver going W W W. M O TO R S P O R T D AY S . C O M

head-to-head with the best in Europe in both the IAME and Rotax classes. Mathildaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one-off appearance in the IAME Euro Series at Wackersdorf in June paid dividends too, with the Uppsala native taking sixth place. This was almost three months before she returned to the Bavarian circuit and secured her place in the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals, finishing third in the Senior Max standings. During the final race weekend of that particular campaign, Mathilda was also the quickest, posting the fastest lap in three of the four races she took part in.
