Welcome to MotorsportDays LIVE 2019 Welcome to the first edition of The Grid from MotorsportDays LIVE 2019. This publication is a great new addition to our on-track show package, bringing all competitors and visitors up-to-speed with the latest show news as it happens in Silverstone’s Pit Lane garages or throughout the halls of the Silverstone Wing. Motorsport UK’s CEO Hugh Chambers kicks off this year’s event, not only recalling his fast-paced days in Formula One with BAR Honda but revealing MS UK’s far-reaching and innovative plans to boost motorsport across all levels in 2020.

Ben Whibley Founder, MotorsportDays LIVE

Later today we are delighted to welcome the 2019 British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington and race team owner Dick Bennetts to the conference stage, but not before Colin has taken his BMW through its paces on the International Circuit. Dick and Colin have more motorsport experience between them than most of us can ever dream of, but we can share in their success. Louise Goodman, who earlier in the day will be running a media session with Colin’s West Surrey Racing team-mate Tom Oliphant and Racing Mentor author, Jess Shanahan, will be picking up her BTCC mic to tease out the secrets of this dynamic duo’s success. Tony Parraman is another with big dreams at Silverstone. He is a member of the Bloodhound Land Speed Record attempt team. Just back from highspeed testing in South Africa, Tony is here to talk about the addiction of breaking a speed barrier that has stood for 20 years. A packed pit lane schedule includes a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with Radical’s latest addition to its sportscar stable, The Rapture. I will be experiencing its power for myself this afternoon and have to confess, I cannot wait. As a competitive, amateur racer, my ethos for MotorsportDays LIVE has always been to deliver a previously unseen opportunity to get out on track in as many marques as possible. A new addition to the show for 2019 is the Engineering & Technology Show. Focused around the Haas F1 team’s Perfect Garage, it showcases the very latest in motorsport engineering and technology by those exhibiting here over the next couple of days. Meanwhile, Power Maxed Racing is hosting six suspension clinics in Garage 39, passing on their sought-after skills, honed in the heat of a racing garage, to us lesser mortals. So welcome to day one of MotorsportDays LIVE 2019. Explore every inch of the Silverstone Wing inside and out as our packed agenda has one simple aim – to get you out on track and on that podium!

DAY 1 Friday 1st November 2019

Introducing Alexandra Legouix: The face of MotorsportDays LIVE TV Alexandra Legouix is probably best known as the main face and pitlane reporter for Eurosport's live coverage of the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). However, over the next couple of days she will heading up MotorsportDays LIVE TV. A regular contributor already to the MotorsportDays annuals, Alex will be able to cover every angle of the show this year, from pitlane garage to exhibition hall, from live in-car reporting direct from the racetrack to conference interviews.

Alex’s WTCR work has seen her travel the globe, taking in 10 different countries in a season. In addition to this major undertaking the popular presenter hosts this Championship’s YouTube series, All Access Live. In addition, this season Alex presented an exciting new series for Barrett Jackson & Bentley celebrating Bentley's Centenary Anniversary. This show took her to Pikes Peak, Pebble Beach, Laguna Seca and most recently, she drove the new Continental GT through New York as part of the enormous Bentley Parade. The show will be released later this month. Alex has covered all areas of motorsport as is now viewed as one of the most well-rounded of female motorsports hosts in the industry. Over the years she has presented

WRC All Live for the World Rally Championship. She presented the Dakar for Red Bull TV. She presented World Rallycross for Eurosport. Alex is also no stranger to the world of Formula One either, she started her motorsport career as a presenter at the McLaren Technology Centre, before moving on to becoming the presenter for the main screens at Singapore F1 and interviewer for the Formula 1 drivers’ parade for the World feed. She also co-presented the inaugural series of F1 Esports. For OnlyMotors TV, Alex recently found herself battling fellow MotorsportDays LIVE host Louise Goodman in a head-to-head ice driving competition which Alex won. Apparently a new contest is being

planned for these leading motorsport presenters – this time in a stunt driving competition! Additionally, Alex is the creator and host of the newly released “Mindset Unfiltered” podcast which brings you raw, open, honest and unfiltered chats from some of our greatest racers including Carlos Sainz, Andy Priaulx, Yvan Muller, Gordon Shedden and many more. When not reporting from the pit lanes in an array of world class motorsport Alex focuses on her other great love, yoga. A qualified yoga instructor, she owns a yoga and meditation studio in Surrey. She has also released three top-rated yoga DVDs selling on Amazon, in HMV and in supermarkets worldwide. She is also the monthly yoga columnist for BestFit Magazine.

Check out Alex live from Silverstone via the MotorsportDays Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/motorsportdays/ 10

THE PRAGA R1:

Thoroughbred performance Praga may not be a name that is familiar to everyone here at MotorsportDays LIVE, but it has been making vehicles for more than a century. This Slovakian firm started life in 1907 by producing planes, military vehicles, motorcycles and agricultural machinery. Although none of those vehicles will be nestling in Garage 22 over the next couple of days. This garage will be home to a different sort of horsepower, the striking Praga R1. This stunner is a full-carbon track car that is designed around a composite

monocoque but inspired by endurance prototypes. Experienced drivers such as rally ace Sebastian Loeb and ex Formula 1 winner David Coulthard have both been impressed with this thoroughbred’s performance, with the latter left amazed by its on-track agility.

So make sure Garage 22 is on your list of musts for this weekend’s show and check out this Eastern European beauty for yourself.

Another stand-out car that comes with a Praga badge is the R1R. This is the first road car created by Praga since 1947 and is based on the racing models but, as they say on their website, “is available with licence plates”!

W. T. AUTHOR:

Unique watch collection For the last six years, W. T. Author has been releasing a new watch collection every September. It is all part of an elaborate 13-year plan to re-imagine the history of the wristwatch from its origins in the early 1900s, up until the present day. So far that includes pocket watches from the beginning of the 20th century, trench watches from the First World War, cushion cased watches from the roaring twenties, Art Deco watches from the 1930s, pilots watches from the Battle of Britain, and dress watches from around the time of the Queen's coronation. Their current collection or ‘Chapter Seven’ is the No. 1968, which takes

reference from motorsport watches from the 1960s, and the colours from the F1 starting grid of the era. By the year 2025, they will have completed the 13 chapters to form a unique watch collection with a 130-year history. Each watch is built in limited quantities, with a maximum of 125 pieces, and some one-of-a-kind watches that are exclusively auctioned off for charity every year. Each watch is uniquely numbered on the case back, and once sold out, they will be archived in their museum. All of the watches are handassembled in their workshop in rural Shropshire, with all of the leather straps hand-made there as well.

Steering to success with Team BRIT Head out to the Paddock at MotorsportDays LIVE over the next two days and you will discover the inspirational Team BRIT. This motorsport team supports people with physical and psychological challenges in accessing motorsport. However, during this year’s show they will be offering motorsport professionals the chance to experience life on the track as a disabled driver. At 1.50pm on Friday afternoon, in the main conference sector, MotorsportDays LIVE visitors can hear from Team BRIT Commercial Director Mike Scudamore, and Race Engineer Al Locke. They will be talking through the innovative technology the team has used to develop the world’s most advanced hand controls. The controls use fly-by-wire technology to create a system that allows disabled drivers to access everything they need from the steering wheel, a significant step forward from push/pull hand controls used by the majority of disabled drivers. The creation of an electronic braking system means that everything can be done with both hands on the wheel, taking away the disadvantage faced by disabled drivers in competitive racing. The bespoke,

interchangeable system, means that drivers with a vast range of disabilities, can drive in the same team. Guests to the show will also have the chance to drive one of the team’s BMW 116 cars, used in this year’s BMW 116 Trophy, to experience this intuitive tech for themselves. Also on display and available to test, will be the team’s full-motion Vesaro simulator, equipped with hand controls. Mike Scudamore said: “We’re really looking forward to this fantastic opportunity to meet with professionals across the industry to show them what Team BRIT is all about. We’re making a huge difference to motorsport by levelling the playing field for disabled drivers, and we’re only able to do that with our incredible technology. “Until now, disabled drivers have always been at a disadvantage and could never be truly competitive. Now, thanks to our innovation, the door is open for racing teams and their crew to welcome talented disabled racers to the track.” Want to know more? Visit Garages 70 & 72 in the Paddock area throughout the show or go to www.teambrit.co.uk

DAY 1 Friday 1st November 2019

Breaking records with the Bloodhound It seems slightly ironic that a small island such as the UK is so passionate about huge challenges like the Land Speed Record. However, those daring souls that attempt such records continue to inspire us. The latest team to take on this epic challenge is Grafton LSR with the mighty Bloodhound. This intrepid team is aiming to break the land speed record which currently stands at 763.035mph (1,227.985kmh).

This was set more than 20 years ago by another British team, including the current Bloodhound LSR driver Andy Green. So we are delighted to welcome Tony Parraman, a key member of the Grafton LSR team, to MotorsportDays LIVE to talk about the Bloodhound’s recent high-speed tests in the Hakskeenpan in the Kalahari Desert, South Africa. The plan was to take this car in excess of

400mph (643km/h), using the EJ200 jet engine and if the tests have gone to plan, the Bloodhound team will return to South Africa in 2020 to run for the record itself. So, join Tony in the Conference Area at 11:30 and be some of the first people to hear Tony update us on how the Bloodhound performed in the Desert and what is next for this beast of speed.

RADICAL SPORTSCARS: A purely race-bred thrill-a-minute driving experience 2019 has been another strong year for British sportscar manufacturer Radical, not least with its official championships continuing to go from strength-to-strength. Presenting something unique to its ever-increasing grids of newcomers, karting graduates and seasoned drivers of all ages, Radical is staying true to its company name – a purely race-bred thrill-a-minute driving experience both on the racetrack and road. The SR1 Cup has once again proved its winning multi-class formula as the UK’s leading entry level sports prototype racing series, with The Rookie Cup for the novice racer and Fangio Trophy, for drivers aged 40 years or over, proving popular with the addition of numerous teams and drivers. With over 1,200 cars produced so far, the SR3 remains the Peterborough company’s most successful model sold worldwide. The model’s official UK Radical Challenge championship never ceases to attract bumper grids with the 2019 title battle one of the closest yet, that went all the way to the 21st and final race of the season. Away from the racetrack, Radical also launched its new road-legal Rapture, which will be available to sample during MSDLive at Silverstone. Lanan Racing, Full Throttle Motorsport, JP Motorsport, Track Focused, Quattro Motorsport, University of Derby, Pyro Motorsport, and Matthew Bentley Racing, plus numerous new privateer entries.

Unrivalled level of competition In addition to showcasing its 2020 format for the SR1 Cup and Radical Challenge championships, Radical will also unveil its newly expanded international winter testing and racing programme. Recently launched by Radical Iberia, the Nevada Cup is an informal and friendly series offering a mix of open-pitlane testing and racing across a fourround calendar of circuits in Andalucía, Spain. The seven-round Gulf Radical Cup also returns for the 13th year. Staged at the Yas Marina and Dubai Autodrome circuits from October to March, it makes for an appealing overseas destination for SR3 drivers and their families. Radical’s racing championships are home to a diverse array of drivers from across the globe. The Radical Challenge series alone welcomed competitors from France, Germany, Iceland, New Zealand, Switzerland, Russia, the UAE and the USA this year.

If you are seeking an exhilarating racing experience at near-unrivalled performance within ever-growing and fiercely competitive grids, then come and talk to Radical Sportscars at MSDLive.

Radical’s new-for-2019 Rapture road-legal track car will be present to sample for the first time at a UK event since its global dynamic launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.

The unrivalled level of competition and consistently healthy grids continue to draw wider appeal as drivers migrate to Radical’s domestic championships from other top series, including from the Funcup, Ginetta, Porsche, Mini, Renault Clio, Lotus, and even rallying.

At MSDLive, Radical Sportscars’ best-selling SR3 RSX will thrill drivers and passengers alike.

This year also brought no fewer than 12 new teams to compete across Radical’s UK

ANGLO AMERICAN OIL COMPANY: Major supplier of racing fuels and oils

During 2019 Anglo American Oil Company Ltd celebrates 20 years of trading and is today one of the major suppliers of racing fuels and oils to the UK motorsport market. It all started in 1999 when former racer Anders Hildebrand was offered the distributorship for 76 racing fuels and oils. Within a couple of years, the company was the first to supply the British GT Championship with control fuel and soon British F3, SEAT Cupra and Radical followed. Today the company supplies over 20 different championships with Sunoco race fuels where full fuel testing is provided as part of the service package.

only protected the engines from mechanical failures, but also that gave that extra 0.5% power. A close partnership with leading additive manufacturer Lubrizol’s R&D department in the US led to the formulation of a bespoke running-in oil and much thinner racing oil than they were using. Today, the range comprises running-in, historic, street

Operating out of bespoke facilities in Poole, on the south coast of England, the company has the ability to not only store a vast amount of racing fuels and oils, but also to blend bespoke unleaded and leaded racing fuels. It distributes Sunoco race fuels and Driven Racing Oil lubricants in Europe and the Middle East through appointed distributors, whereas the UK market is looked after by themselves. In fact, any race fuel order will normally reach the UK market within 48 hours, although a 24 hour option is, for the most part, also available. The fastest-growing market for Anglo American Oil Company is, however, the US-developed Driven Racing Oil. The Driven oils came about when NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing started to see oilrelated issues in early 2000. As the difference between winning or coming second in NASCAR relates to big money, there was a major focus on finding partners to formulate an oil that not

The main target group for Anglo American is clearly racers, race teams and championships, and as Anders states “success is when you stock and sell products that the customers want and that you can dispatch quickly”.

The F1000 single seater series was the first whole grid single manufacturer championship to run the SpeedMarshal rear light system and in 2019 it certainly proved its worth when there were a few stalls on the start line. The GPS controlled yellow flashing lights which remain on until the cars move above 15kph give drivers those extra moments of awareness to help them avoid the stalled car in front. Additionally, at any time during the race, the lights come on again if a car drops its speed below 45kph, for any reason. SpeedMarshal will continue its support with F1000 for 2020 to ensure the whole grid maintains its use of the FIA approved rear light.

REVOLUTION WHEELS: World-leading supplier of solutions to boost your performance Revolution Wheels will launch a new 18” R5 rally wheel this year, as well as expand the CR10 race wheel range which utilises flow form technology to maximise tensile strength.

With over 50 years of designing, manufacturing and delivering customised wheels to motorsport competitors, 2019 was a year of impressive expansion for Revolution Wheels. “We have invested heavily in new staff, facilities, equipment and software so that we can offer 95% of our product range within three to five days,” says Warren McKiernan, Managing Director, Revolution Wheels. “The key to that is getting the necessary information, so we have also developed new digital resources to help our customers define exactly the specifications they require.” Despite the uncertainties surrounding Brexit, Revolution Wheels is preparing as best as it can to minimise the impact on its customers both in the EU and globally. “Our biggest message to our customers at the moment is that just because we are a British company, don’t forget us, whether we are in the EU or not,” highlights McKiernan. “We are doing everything we can behind the scenes to prepare for the consequences of Brexit, whilst continuing to bring new products and technologies to market – so our customers should feel reassured. We may be a British company, but our business is global, and our technology is world-leading.”

Revolution Wheels will launch a new 18” R5 rally wheel this year, as well as expand the CR10 race wheel range which utilises flow form technology to maximise tensile strength. While the renowned RFX wheel range for historic motorsport has been expanded into 16”, 17” and 18” sizes. “The RFX wheel may look exactly the same as those raced in the 80s, but we have completely re-engineered it using innovative technologies such as flow forming to ensure it can cope with the ever-increasing performance of modern tyres,” explains McKiernan. “This achieves

that classic 80s look, but with the impressive performance of today.” Revolution Wheels is a small company, but a world-leading wheel supplier that demands quality throughout every stage of a wheel’s manufacture; from using the purest aluminium available to the most up-to-date technology. It’s not just high-performance wheels that the UK-based firm provides, but also friendly, reliable and helpful support to meet the customer’s needs – whatever they may be. “We know through testing that our products match and exceed the performance of our competitors,” concludes McKiernan. “We’re growing at 15% every year and that’s down to a balancing act of continuously developing our core technologies whilst introducing new products. But the most important aspect is our customer relationship.” So, wherever you are, whatever you race, Revolution Wheels has the solution to boost your performance.

These tests demonstrated that, by simply wearing our underwear, Walero is able to stabilise the driver’s core temperature, lower heart rates (by up to 10%) and reduce perspiration (by up to 40%), reducing fatigue and improving performance.” Such was the magnitude of these results, that Walero has had a significant amount of interest from high-level teams globally.

“After a few months of careful consideration, July saw us form a technical partnership with the highly regarded Audi Sport Team WRT,” says Grant. As a result, Walero is utilised at some of the highest levels of global motorsport, such as DTM and WTCR. “Off the track, our partnership with New Era baseball cap company is also very cool,” Grant adds. “These guys literally invented the baseball cap! We have collaborated with them to create a cap that uses the same tech that is in our underwear, Outlast©! For those that are unaware of New Era, in Europe the only other people they work with in motorsport are Renault F1, McLaren F1, Red Bull and Ducati. In the US they supply all the major NASCAR/INDYCAR

teams and they are the sole supplier to the NFL, MLB and NBA. It’s been a pretty big year.” Walero emphasises that it is not simply supplying underwear – it’s important to understand how the technology works and how it can contribute to improved performance out on the track. “What does 2020 hold? Well, that would be telling. No doubt, there are some very cool things in the pipeline for 2020, but nothing we can talk about just yet,” Grant comments. “2020 will bring socks, bras and boxers to the range. All will be FR and will utilise the same temperature regulating technology, Outlast©, that we use in our regular range. The sock will also be compression, helping to reduce fatigue even further.”

DRAPER TOOLS:

Offering extreme power and reliability 2019 has been a fantastic year for Draper Tools, in which it has celebrated its centenary. Established in 1919 by Bert Draper, the business is still family-owned and run today by the fourth generation of the Draper family. “Other benefits of a brushless motor are that they generate no friction, so produce less heat, which means that the tools last up to 10 times longer than brushed tools,” says Leslie. “Thanks to the brushless technology, all these tools are also quieter, more compact and more lightweight.”

“We have continued to further expand our ever-growing range of tools with more professional garage equipment such as the Digital 3-D Four Wheel Aligner, diagnostic tablets and engine testing equipment,” explains Dean Leslie, Business Development Manager, Draper Tools. “We also launched our comprehensive range of timing tools, and our liquid cooled induction heater which solves the issue of using naked flames in the workshop, thus keeping insurance costs down.” Draper has had success with its partners Prodrift, having both Martin Wannacott and Alan Haynes competing in the BDC, and both making it to the podium. “Will Martin take the 2019 trophy home? Come over to Garage 21 to find out more,” says Leslie. “We also signed a partnership deal with EXCELR8 and a sponsorship deal with driver Rob Smith, we are proud to see Rob making his way up the leader board at the BTC.” In 2020, Draper plans to continue expanding its diagnostic tools range to include smoke machines with variable pressure settings, allowing the testing of turbo engines. “We have just launched the XP20 cordless power tool range and this will be on show in Garage 21 along with our Expert range of tool boxes fitted out with our unique EVA foam kits,” Leslie comments. “While you are visiting us, please talk to our trained staff who will be on hand to talk you through all our ranges and help you choose the right product to get the job done.”

The brand-new XP20 range of power tools offers extreme power and reliability for the professional tradesperson. All tools in the range have brushless motors, which generate more torque than a brushed motor while draining the battery up to 50% less.

Designed as a multi-battery system, all the tools use the same lithiumion batteries and charger. “This range is just an example of the impressive and growing selection of hand and power tools available from Draper. To see the XP20 range for yourself, visit Garage 21,” Leslie adds. Meanwhile, don’t miss Draper’s Prodrift partners Martin and Alan, who will be on track offering drift passenger laps. Experience the adrenaline as you buckle up and handbrake in to corners at high speed. Feel the transitions as you scream corner to corner!

EEC PERFORMANCE SYSTEMS: Intelligent race fuel bowsers The EEC Performance Systems range of f-POD intelligent race fuel bowsers is fast becoming the market leader for motorsport fuelling equipment. “We supply teams worldwide, including F1, F2, F3, F4, WEC, ELMS, Asian LMS, Indycar, Indylites, Porsche Super Cup, Blancpain, British GT, and BTCC,” explains Derek Hodder, Director, EEC Performance Systems. “Our wide range of machines has been designed to suit all applications and budgets.” EEC Performance Systems began 2019 by becoming the exclusive fuel bowser supplier for the inaugural W-Series, with an order for eight of its entry level f-POD Ecos, which are ideal for budgetconscious teams. “Congratulations to Jamie Chadwick taking the championship at a thrilling season finale,” says Hodder. “The highlight of 2019 has to be our partnership with Racing Point F1 to develop a version of our f-POD Max that is fully integrated into their pit garage walling, complementing their slick new look for 2019,” he adds. “Now known as the f-POD Max-i, these machines have been shortlisted for an award at this year’s Race Tech World Motorsport Symposium.” Orders are still coming in at this late stage in the season and EEC Performance Systems is thrilled to be chosen to supply bowsers for the F4 Cup in this weekend’s Motorsport Games in Italy. “During 2019, we have further developed the f-POD Ultra, enabling us to connect to the

machine remotely via the internet. This has proved to be a great success, particularly with our customers overseas,” says Hodder. “We have also developed software enabling ‘live’ information to be shared remotely between the f-POD in the pit garage and race team engineers. Well received, this is currently used within the F1 championship.” EEC Performance Systems is excited to be involved with the ‘Perfect Pit Garage’ at this year’s MSD Live. “This provides a great opportunity for us to demonstrate how the f-POD works and highlight its unique software and safety features, superior to other similar products currently available,” Hodder comments. “GRID Dailies readers can come and talk to us, ask questions and find out why the f-POD has gained its enviable ‘World Class’ reputation.” For 2020, EEC Performance Systems is launching the Wi-POD wireless corner weight scales at the Autosport International Exhibition. In line with the f-POD, the Wi-POD will feature unique features and provide consistent, accurate, reliable results, ensuring cars are balanced with weight evenly distributed, every time. “The Wi-POD will become a critical component within every professional pit garage,” Hodder concludes.
