twitter feed What people are saying about the MSA on Twitter
There’s a telling quote in our cover story, which comes from somebody who has invested over 10 years into his motor sporting passion, but has yet to make his real-life debut. It reads: “Motor sport cannot go on forever the way it us. There are too many finite resources. But enthusiasm, that’s not a finite resource.â€? It comes from Matt Hunter, who co-founded The Online Racing Association, and has since worked together with a group of friends to turn it into the UK’s largest virtual racing organiser. It’s quite a success story, but one most real-world racers probably won’t have heard of. However, the rise of professional eSports has shone a light on this form of motor sport. Opinions of virtual racing have changed. Gaming is no longer that frowned upon ‘waste of time’ hobby, and can now lead to genuine lifechanging possibilities for the best of the best. But the wider effect of eSports can already be seen. It’s an enormous tool for fan engagement, spreading the message and excitement of the sport. It’s allowing a whole new generation to fall in love with racing, rallying and everything in-between, just in a different way. How long until our future world champions are starting their careers in front of a console rather than a go-kart? Perhaps that time is already here‌

The MSA has announced the appointment of Hugh Chambers to the role of Chief Executive Officer from November 1, 2018. Chambers brings significant commercial, sports governing body and motor sport experience. His current role is as Chief Commercial Officer of World Sailing, where he has been instrumental in creating a new commercial and marketing proposition, credited with transforming perceptions of the sport to stakeholders and commercial partners. Prior to this, he enjoyed senior commercial and leadership roles at Team Sky and the British Olympic Association through London 2012. He also spent 10 years in motor sport management, including programmes in the WRC, Le Mans and Formula One, with BAR Honda. “This role combines a lifelong involvement in motor sport, with all of my broader experience, drawn from a career in sport and marketing,” said Chambers. “I am fortunate to have worked at the very pinnacle of motor racing, as well as participating across the breadth of the sport. “There is an incredible opportunity to grow participation at grassroots level, bringing the excitement of motor sport to new audiences. “I look forward to working alongside all the staff and stakeholders for the long-term benefit of the sport in the UK.”

ENTRIES OPEN FOR CLUB AND VOLUNTEER AWARDS
The best of UK motor sport will be recognised in this year’s JLT MSA Club and Volunteer of the Year awards, which are now open for entries. The awards focus on a range of grassroots activities. Clubs can nominate themselves and are encouraged to do so, no matter the size of their contribution to the sport. The volunteer awards recognise excellence across several categories, from Steward and Clerk of the Course to Technical Official, Marshal and more. Each category will have a winner and the best overall entry will be crowned the Volunteer of the Year. Nominators should ideally be from MSA-recognised Regional Associations, Clubs or Groups, although this is not essential and all entries will be considered. Suze Endean, MSA Development Manager, said: “Clubs and volunteers are the bedrock of UK motor sport; we want to celebrate and showcase their achievements. We’ve listened to feedback to further improve the awards this year, so we look forward seeing lots of entries start to roll in.” All category winners will receive a cash award and a trophy at the MSA Night of Champions ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in January. Nomination forms and further info can be found at www.msauk.org/ awards. Entries close on November 12.
WHY NOT BECOME AN MSA REGISTRAR? Historic motor sport enthusiasts with knowledge of period specifications and associated FIA regulations can become MSA Registrars, inspecting vehicles and processing applications for FIA Historic Technical Passports (HTPs). Although licensed by the MSA, registrars operate independently; those needing HTPs deal directly with the registrars, who inspect vehicles and complete applications on behalf of their customers. Registrars typically charge customers an inspection fee
10 10_MSA News.indd 1
and travel expenses. They handle applications from start to finish, including answering any queries from the FIA following submission. MSA Registrars must have: a good understanding of period competition vehicle specifications; an understanding of period FIA homologations and regulations, plus the current FIA Appendix K historic regulations; good attention to detail and good IT skills. Anyone interested in becoming an MSA Registrar should email michael.duncan@msauk.org.

NUMBER OF MARSHALS REACHES 10,000 FOR FIRST TIME
The marshalling community reached a major milestone this summer when the MSA issued the 10,000th registration for the first time since annual renewals began six years ago. The news means that there are more registered motor sport marshals in the UK than ever before. David Richards CBE, MSA Chairman, welcomed the news but cautioned against complacency. “We should always look for new ways to recruit and retain volunteers through further recognition and rewards,” he said. “It will not happen overnight but in time I believe we can put the right
initiatives in place to ensure that the volunteering community continues to thrive well into the future.” Marshals can now renew their registrations for 2019; renewal letters have been sent out with full details of how to re-register online (if eligible) or by post. Over 1500 marshals reregistered within the first week. All registered marshals receive official MSA publications and are entered in to a monthly prize draw. The MSA thanks every one of its 10,000 registered marshals for their invaluable contribution to motor sport in the UK.
in brief HOPPE CROWNED CHAMP
HOT WEATHER GUIDANCE
NEW RULES RELAXED
The first MSA British Champion of 2018 has been crowned, with Mark Hoppe taking his third Car Trial title. Hoppe enjoyed another excellent campaign, collecting an unparalleled run of five maximum scores despite swapping his usual Citroën Saxo for a Dutton Melos mid-season. The 50-year-old, from Dorset, collected the title with one round to spare, having previously won the championship in 2014 and ’15. Hoppe has also won the Woolbridge Motor Club Car Trial Championship for the fifth consecutive time.
In light of this year’s exceptional summer, the MSA has issued guidelines for events running during periods of hot, dry weather. Event organisers should be aware of the fire risks associated with motor sport. During periods of hot, dry weather, additional consideration should be given to the environmental factors which may increase the risk. Clubs should work closely with landowners to ensure appropriate measures are put in place. The document can be found under Clubs & Organisers in the resource centre at msauk.org.
The MSA has relaxed impending changes to roll cage rules in stage rallying to address concerns regarding compatibility with older cars and difficulties in retrofitting additional parts. Regulations due for implementation next year would have required all vehicles first issued with a Vehicle Passport after January 1, 2019 to comply with new roof and windscreen pillar reinforcement measures. However, those requirements have now been restricted to models first conceived after December 31, 2005. Details can be found at msauk.org.

Greg Symes MSA Academy manager pays tribute to the Racing Steps Foundation
The trustees and beneficiaries of the Racing Steps Foundation gathered to celebrate the scheme’s lifespan
A
little over 10 years ago, world rally champion Robert Reid and motor sport marketing expert Derek Walters caught up in a pub near Banbury. Robert had persuaded the MSA that – in the absence of Richard [Burns] and Colin [McRae] – it needed a development scheme to support the next generation of young British talent. And Derek was fronting a new organisation with a remarkably similar vision: The Racing Steps Foundation (RSF). This pub chat became the catalyst for a unique partnership that would go on to benefit hundreds of upcoming race, rally and rallycross competitors over the course of next decade. The RSF was conceived by Graham Sharp, an extremely successful businessman who was keen to help youngsters with the talent, but not the funds to climb the racing ladder. Essentially, he became their benefactor. Graham brought Walters on board to run the new venture, while the late John Surtees became its ambassador. RSF beneficiaries have since earned 20 championship titles, 169 wins, 399 podiums, 124 poles and 128 fastest laps across many junior championships on both four and two wheels. Yet the initiative was never intended to last forever, and in July this year all those fortunate enough to have been part of the RSF story gathered near Silverstone to celebrate a truly outstanding contribution to UK motor sport.
For the last 10 years the Racing Steps Foundation has backed some of the UK’s most promising talent

17_MSA Views RL.indd 1
From an MSA Academy point of view, there is no doubt that we could not have built so strong and lasting a pathway, nor supported so many competitors, without the RSF’s support as our education partner. Initially Graham and Derek agreed to fund our new programmes for the first three years but ultimately, we stuck together for seven. The list of MSA Academy programmes that the RSF helped make happen include: Performance Master Classes, which have been delivered to countless junior drivers at events nationwide; the AASE programme, launched at Croydon College but now firmly established at Loughborough College; the Squad, catering for a wider group of drivers demonstrating potential excellence; our rally co-driver programme; and Team UK, providing bespoke support to a hand-picked cohort of the very best drivers just below F1 and the WRC. Most importantly, RSF’s support has allowed us to create the MSA Coaching pathway, aiming to bring motor sport in line with other sports by instilling a proper coaching ethos. Notable drivers who have felt the RSF’s guiding hand on their backs include Ben Barnicoat, James Calado, Jake Dennis, Jack Harvey, Oliver Rowland and Oliver Turvey. But add those who have been exposed to the MSA Academy and the number burgeons to over 1000 – far too many to list! Over the coming years we intend to help thousands more and I believe this will be the RSF’s true legacy. The breadth and depth of knowledge and materials that the RSF helped us to build up will benefit not only the current generation of young drivers but also the next and hopefully more beyond. We were incredibly fortunate to find a group that was not only launching at the same time as us, but which also shared our vision and wanted to help us achieve it. We and so many competitors owe the RSF – Graham and Derek in particular – a huge debt of gratitude. n

View from the volunteer
Nadine Lewis BMMC and MSA Working Group chair on PRC checks
I
think it’s fair to say that British motor sport marshals set the standard for the rest of the world to follow. Since the origins of the sport, Britain has been held up as a shining example of marshalling expertise, etiquette and professionalism. The only way to maintain the exceptionally high standards of our volunteering teams across all disciplines of the sport is to ensure that we follow the processes that helped make us the best in the first place. Last season, the MSA began running random spot checks on marshals’ Personal Record Cards (PRC), purely to ensure that volunteers are following the correct upgrade and training protocols for their specific grading. I am aware that this has caused some upset from certain ranks, and I understand that, but there are some very simple facts that explain why we are doing it and why it’s important. First of all, we’re certainly not singling anybody out, so any feelings that Big Brother is watching and checking up on every move are misplaced. Some people who have been doing the same job for multiple years and haven’t been checked before have felt a bit put out, but it’s most certainly not a personal thing. It’s a fact that there are a minimum amount of days and training sessions that need to be done for volunteers to

either maintain their current marshalling grade or seek to upgrade their status. For those doing the minimum requirements, and often those going way above and beyond, we have absolutely no issue. But why should somebody who isn’t doing those things be entitled to hold the same grade as somebody who is doing two or three times as much? This becomes particularly important at examining grades, such as Examining Post Chief, who are in charge of assessing those at lower grades for their upgrade eligibility. If that Examining Post Chief is not attending training regularly enough they may not be up to date with all of the rules – for example we’ve seen several changes in flag signalling in recent years – and we need to know that everybody is fully up to speed. It also highlights the importance of attending training. The minimum we set is one session every two years, but there’s nothing stopping people going every year and personally I always learn something new or get reminded of something important. Training is imperative, especially if volunteers have had five or more months off during the winter break. It’s a great way to blow off the cobwebs. We are always working to make things better. Through the MSA Marshals’ Working Group we are looking at ways to streamline the process, and make information easier to find and more readily available. Via the British Motorsport Marshals’ Club, we make a Regional Gradings Officer available for anybody to ask questions if they don’t understand the process. A huge part of marshalling is teamwork – from Cadets and Trainee marshals to Examiners. We’re not trying to make things routine-like and overly strict, we’re purely trying to maintain our world-class level, together. n

Andy Meyrick Bentley GT driver on the marshals who saved his life

don’t think I’ve ever been so grateful to have somebody holding my hand and talking to me when I’ve been in a race car. Sounds simple, and it’s not something you ever think about really… until you’re in the situation where you urgently need that kind of support. There’s been a history of big accidents at SpaFrancorchamps, and mine in the Blancpain GT Series 24 Hours earlier this year was easily the worst of my career. The race had just gone green after a safety car period and I was flat out up Eau Rouge when I found a car stranded at the top of Raidillon. I didn’t even have time to brake. Just come off the throttle and… bang! The data said the impact came at 150mph. Fortunately my Team Parker Racing-run Bentley Continental GT3 was built strong, and the safety cell did its job, but in those first few minutes after the impact I honestly thought that was it for me. The car immediately caught fire, and there’s that moment when all the other cars have gone past, and the medical crews haven’t arrived yet, and it’s all silent. It was scary, and lonely, and then the first responders arrived. A gentleman immediately set about extinguishing the fire and securing the car, and a lady opened my door and just started talking to me. She grabbed my hand and spoke

clearly, and all I wanted to do was go to sleep, which is never a good sign. She kept me awake and engaged, but most of all calm, until the emergency services turned up. I had seven broken ribs, a broken vertebra and a collapsed lung. If those two marshals hadn’t come to me, I don’t believe I’d be here. Even when the medical crews did arrive to help, I asked the first responders to stay with me and keep talking. I found it comforting. I’ve since found out they were husband and wife, and regularly travel the world volunteering and supporting drivers like me, especially when we need them most. As a driver it can be easy to forget the importance of our emergency services, particularly the marshals and the first responders, who I now owe everything to. Motor sport is a selfish activity in the main, and it can be so easy to take certain things for granted. Looking back, I think I was probably lucky. The accident was a horrific head-on impact, but I was on the right-hand side of the car and luckily the driver of the Lamborghini – Jürgen Krebs – was also on the opposite side, so we were both shielded from the impact to an extent. Since the accident I’ve been in touch with that couple who helped me initially, as well as many other members of the marshalling force and medical services who looked after me. I’ve sent many gifts and thanks, because I couldn’t appreciate their efforts more. These people volunteer and do this as a hobby, but it’s also their passion and they care so much. It’s quite moving. With the work I do with MSA Team UK, supporting and coaching the younger drivers from the MSA Academy, I always make a point of enforcing the respect that needs to be shown to the volunteers that keep us racing. After this I’ll be hammering that fact home more than ever. n

orest rallying is rebounding brilliantly in 2018, particularly in Wales where the sport appeared to be on the brink of turmoil just two years ago. Despite the best efforts by the Motor Sports Association and Natural Resource Wales – the government body responsible for Welsh-owned forests – and months of discussions, a stalemate was reached. NRW wanted a significantly increased fee – almost double – for repairing roads and rallying simply couldn’t afford it. But, in mid-2016, in stepped Rally4Wales. Founded by rally winning co-driver and proud Welshman Jamie Edwards, it was initially started to lobby the government, reminding it of the importance rallying holds for the Welsh economy. In a short period of time, and with the addition of forest repair expert Richard Ceen – another keen rally competitor with experience in World Rally Cars – it was pitching to repair the forest roads on its own. ❱❱

Boosting forest rallying
Rally4Wales organises the necessary road repairs after stage rallies. Heavy machinery, materials and logistics must be arranged. Right: Ceen in action
“It was a difficult situation,” says Edwards of the impasse in 2016. “At the time the MSA and NRW weren’t able to reach an agreement on charges for 2017 and afterwards. “It wasn’t easy, there were a lot of obstacles in the way and we’ve had to jump through a huge number of hoops along the way, we still do, and there’s still a lot of work we have to do in terms of health and safety and project management on a daily basis.” On paper, it was an outrageous task, but back in the present, the future of the organisation is strong and it’s looking forward to it. Despite having to almost pluck figurers out of the air for repairing roads in 2017 – with so many variables, the price of stone being a key one – the organisation made a very small profit in 2017 and that’s its aim, to wash its face and pay the bills, giving Wales a clean sport in return while doing so. It’s not as simple as just repairing a road. The equipment and workers must be arranged and delivered to the correct forest/stage at the right time; NRW must give permission to

“To run at the front again only compliments Rally4Wales’ work” make the necessary repairs, and the job must avoid delays to run to time. That puts the job at the mercy of weather and logistical costs. It’s a tricky task. The outcome of Rally4Wales’ involvement, along with the MSA’s recent seeding change – which now allows organisers to choose the running order of cars based on class rather than just performance, as it was before – has facilitated a boost in entries. Previously, the performance-first seeding had meant historic and two-wheel-drive cars had to start further down the running order, giving them rougher, rutted roads that the cars weren’t always equipped to handle. It was a situation that meant owners often needed the wallet capacity to repair any resulting damage. “The stages this year have been really smooth, on the Nicky Grist Stages the roads held up really well, even under double usage, which is great for us in our little 1400s,” explains 1400cc Ford KA driver Tommi Meadows. “To run at the front of the order again only compliments the work done by Rally4Wales, this year has all been
www.msauk.org / Autumn 2018

really good. They made it happen. We might not have been rallying on these stages or talking about this now if R4W wasn’t here. Everyone has to be really grateful for the fact we can go and rally on those roads now.” The combination of the seeding change and the Rally4Wales-repaired stages has gone down well in the historic rallying arena too. Ben Friend (Ford Escort Mk2) believes that the quality of the roads is directly affecting the number of entries. “Historics wasn’t in a great place at the start of this year as there were a lot of cars missing, like Category 1 [Pre-1968] cars due to the roughness of the stages,” he says. “Looking at the entries now there’s more Category 1 cars and more cars in general, because you know how good the stages are going to be. Before they were repairing the roads with stuff that was too big [stones], whereas now they’re being graded with the correct stuff and it’s obviously working well. With the likes of Jamie and Bob on board, they know what they are doing and know what we want and need. ❱❱

“The numbers are up and I think British rallying is in a good place”
“The numbers are up and I think British rallying is in a good place. Although there’s always a certain degree of negativity, I think it’s doing really well.” The specialist repairs Rally4Wales offers has really helped stage quality. It can give competitors the roads they want. It’s rally repairs, done by rally competitors. It doesn’t get much better than that. So, what of the future? Rally4Wales’ efforts have allowed Welsh rallying to continue, and at a similar cost to what was offered before. But instead of becoming complacent, Edwards wants the changes to kick-start a new generation of rally planning.
28 24_Rally4Wales RL.indd 5
Top: The smoother stages, and running order changes, have helped boost historic entries
“The forests are still a working environment and one of the ongoing problems we have is the issue of harvesting,” says Edwards. “Rallying is not a priority for NRW, they don’t technically earn any money for it. We get the roads in the condition that they are in, which means we have to work with organisers to have better routes, ones that aren’t going to be as badly affected by harvesting. “We currently rally on 10 per cent of NRW forest roads. There’s an enormous scope out there to look at other roads to use for rallying. We need to identify some new opportunities. We have a great chance to do some really cool things in Wales now, and it’s up to everybody to seize that opportunity.” R4W is already branching out in its operations too, by working with the MSA to outline a new kind of cost-effective grassroots gravel event, which currently doesn’t exist in the marketplace. Despite all but one of its staff being volunteers – including Edwards and Ceen – there’s real passion and vision going into the work done by the organisation. The future is bright in Wales. In the coming months, a renewed effort from all within the sport must capitalise on this opportunity, and see that rallying is made more flexible, and therefore safer, in the future. n

Driving Rally GB
The joys of Llandudno Dayinsure Wales Rally GB is based out of Rally Village on Deeside as usual this year. But for the first time there’s a full weekend of entertainment planned at Llandudno – centred, naturally, around the two special stages – with plenty to see and do through Saturday and Sunday (October 6/7). Go to Llandudno on rally weekend and your biggest problem will be where to look. There are rally cars from up and down the ages around every corner, stages being shown on the big screen, bungee trampolines, climbing walls and a whole lot more in the free-to-enter Dayinsure Family Fun Zone. “And don’t forget to look up,” says Ben Taylor managing director of Dayinsure Wales Rally GB, “because you’ll see Red Bull YouTube legend Kenny Belaey flying through the air on two wheels!” Talking of two wheels, that’s where you’ll find Paul Swift – one of Britain’s best known stunt drivers – for most of the weekend. Taylor continues: “It really is going to be an amazing weekend in Llandudno. This town has been part of Dayinsure Wales Rally GB for a long time and the chance to come here and, with the usual exceptional support from Conwy County Borough Council, put on a major event is so exciting. “I can’t wait to get here, the atmosphere will be incredible and there’s so, so much for families to see and do. Parking is all sorted, we’re putting in a grandstand that is available through the Rally Xtra package for those who want one of the best views. Honestly, the stage is set – quite literally – for a magic weekend in Llandudno.”
S
traight over at the roundabout outside Bengal Dynasty. Down Gloddaeth Street, turning just by the Turkish barber and back past the bookies. Got it? Got it. Matt Edwards has known these streets all his life. Born and brought up in Llandudno, there’s nobody better to give us an insight into what it’s going to be like when – for the first time anywhere in Britain – world championship motor sport comes to town at next month’s Dayinsure Wales Rally GB. “It’ll definitely be a strange feeling driving a rally car in the town,” says Prestone MSA British Rally Championship leader Edwards. “Obviously we’ve done road sections through there before, but to be coming through at speed and getting on the handbrake… you’d almost be expecting a knock on the door from plod the next day!” A few Sundays from now (October 7, to be precise), just after nine in the morning, Abbey Road, West Shore will be rocked by the fastest rally cars ever to grace planet Earth being launched the wrong way around the Great Orme. The wrong way? “Yeah,” says Edwards, “the Great Orme stage uses a toll road – known locally as Marine Drive – which is one-way. Every other day of the week you drive from the town side, anti-clockwise around the headland. On the rally, we’re doing it the other way and coming into town, through the toll booth and past the Grand Hotel. “And we’ll be doing it as quickly as possible. I still can’t believe this is actually happening, it’s going to be unreal.” Thanks to huge commitment and effort from the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB organisers, as well an unstinting support from Llandudno itself and Conwy County Borough Council, it’s real.
32 30_Driving GtOrme RL.indd SA.indd 3
www.msauk.org / Autumn 2018
29/08/2018 16:04
“The Great Orme stage is well known in the world of rallying,” continues Edwards, “it’s been used on old RAC Rallies and British national events for decades now. And the challenge of the place is just as big as it’s ever been. You might be tempted to dismiss this one as a spectator-pleaser… don’t. “The stretch around the Orme is tricky and needs a lot of respect. Having a rock face on one side, and the Irish Sea on the other, it’s as unforgiving if you get it wrong as it is rewarding if you get it right. “The grip’s really quite good on the road, but one of the hardest things about it is that your line in the rally car and the notes you make on the recce can’t follow the natural curve of the road, because the pavement sticks out so far.
Your eyes have to work in two ways: following the road and the line.” But as a fan, Edwards wouldn’t be anywhere else other than on top of the Orme. “The view up there’s fantastic,” he says, “you can follow a lovely sequence of corners and see the cars for quite a while. Doing that in some nice early autumn sunshine will be real treat for the hardcore spectators.” Edwards is a family man as well as a rally fan, so he can also see the appeal of the Llandudno side of the stage as well. “There’s so much potential for the family in the town section of the stage,” he says, “and it’s fantastic news that it’s all free. The noise, spectacle and atmosphere of the cars will be incredible when they come off the Orme ❱❱

The stunning scenery of the Great Orme will meet the urban roads of Llandudno to create a unique special stage
and go down to the roundabouts. The finish will be pretty special as well – flying over a jump along the promenade. “We’ve seen the R5 category cars – like the Swift Caravans Ford Fiesta I’ll be driving – actually beating some of those fearsome World Rally Cars on some street stages in the World Rally Championship. That won’t be happening here; the uphill section on the Orme is fast and the roads in general are wide enough that Elfyn Evans (M-Sport Ford World Rally Team star and Dayinsure Wales Rally GB winner from last year) and the rest of the factory drivers should be a fair bit quicker than us.” The Great Orme Llandudno stage is used twice on this year’s event, with the second run forming the 23rd and final test of Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship. The cars will go straight over the finish to a podium celebration on the sea front. “There’s so much to see in Llandudno that day – and for the whole weekend (see sidebar, p32),” says Edwards. “The feeling of anticipation is building in the town now, there’s a real buzz about what’s coming. “Me? Where would I watch? Straight over at the roundabout, outside Bengal Dynasty…” n

otor sport and the armed forces may have more crossover than you think. Much in the way that engineering and technology transfer can work between race engines and military vehicles, so can the skills and training aspect of the human element of the sport. All three of the UK’s armed forces – Army, Navy and Royal Air Force – are currently active in most disciplines of motor sport, and regularly see a benefit from having their serving personnel competing. The link stems back to the 1960s, when the British Army Motorsports Association (BAMA) was formed as a way of testing servicemen’s navigational and driving ability both on and off road. Then, during the late 1960s the BAMA was invited to the Scottish Rally, principally to aid with

the recovery of stranded cars with its fleet of Land Rovers. Turns out it got a taste for it, and since then the BAMA has offered its hundreds of members a plethora of motor sporting options – from rallying, to racing, karting, and everything in-between. Motor sport is one of 44 sports available to servicemen and women sanctioned by the Army Sport Control Board – the regulatory board for sport in the British Army. It became a recognised sport in 2010. The importance of motor sport in the army is reiterated by Captain Mark Saunders – head of the Army motor sport Four-Wheel Group (bike racing is also offered) – who has served for 30 years in the Army all over the world. He says: “Working under testing circumstances and high-stress situations is what we do on the battlefield as well as in the cockpit of a race car. ❱❱

Forces in motor sport

“I’m a weapons engineer and I was involved in rallying too. It always struck me that the Army gives you just enough time to get over the start/finish line in the normal day job.” The best way into Army motor sport, according to Saunders, remains 4x4 navigation, where service-owned green Army Land Rovers take part in 12-car rallies. He says: “Nearly every unit in the Army has a Land Rover, and the events allow you to turn up and drive down a set route, collect letterboards and prove that you’ve driven the set route and completed the complex 4x4 trials that are often dotted along the way. “It makes you a better driver, and it helps you to get the best out of those Land Rovers. Getting involved in motor sport really gives you the opportunities to test your skill off-road and on Tarmac, which close-protection teams, special forces and counter-terrorism teams do day-to-day.” For those in the Royal Air Force, the RAFMSA is the first port of call. Competition secretary Sargeant Chris Slator has served in the RAF for 17 years. Slator looks after many of the motor sport disciplines in the RAFMSA: karting, motocross, motor racing, motorcycle enduro, motorcycle trials, motorcycle road racing and rallying. He says: “Motor sport is important because it brings everybody together, teaches teamwork and you know your competitors and it serves as a social weekend with like-minded people.”

The trifecta is completed by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Motor Sport Association (RNRMMSA), which also offers an entry point to a multitude of disciplines – including motorcycle road racing, car racing, karting and endurance events. It has over 130 members from across the Navy and Marines. “The adage is ‘time for sport,’ not ‘time off for sport,” says Lieutenant Commander Keith Attwood, who has served in the Royal Navy for 17 years and is treasurer of the motor sport organisation. “We’ve got six sponsored disciplines – authorised disciplines – through our association, and for me that’s first and foremost the car racing team. We also have karting, which is even more geared towards grassroots membership and we own our own karts, which we allow service personnel to use.” Each association has karts for its members’ use, and the Army also has service Land Rovers for use, but the Navy and Marines MSA is the only association that allows its members to use pool cars, for a small fee. “That gives them a cheaper way into motor sport,” explains Attwood. “And for the car racing team we have two service vehicles that our association owns, that individuals can rent for about £100 per event, rather than the thousands people charge if you try and rent a car from someone else. That’s for the upkeep of the vehicle – stuff like the oil change afterwards.” ❱❱
39 29/08/2018 16:07
Forces in motor sport
“We afford people the opportunity to get in with a low cost themselves, but for the other disciplines, such as off-roading, our service Land Rovers can be used by drivers – provided that they’ve passed all the armed forces accredited tests to allow them to drive those. They can use them in an off-road environment and off-road competitions.” The MSA’s recognised Armed Forces Racing Challenge gives a home to circuit racing competition between the three, and they are all also set to go head-to-head in this year’s Birkett Six Hour Relay at Silverstone, which is organised by the 750 Motor Club. Attwood says: “It’s incredibly important, first and foremost, to allow people an outlet from general service life. The amount of engagement we actually get from the public at events is very good. We have a very professionallooking paddock and many members of the public come and have a chat with our service personnel to see what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and ask us about our jobs and roles as well. “It’s a great way, talking to the general public, to let them know about the work that we do at the same time. “If [a driver is] exceptional and identified at a young level, they will be allowed to progress their sporting career while serving as well. An example of this, while not to do with motor sport, is Olympic rower Peter Reed, who has
won multiple gold medals. He was a serving officer in the Royal Navy throughout all of that.” For now, the Birkett Relay on October 27 will decide which service holds supremacy when it comes to motor racing. This year, the Navy and Marines MSA hopes to field its own teams for the first time. “Chris Slator [who manages the AFRC] will have us compete under the same umbrella, to share the same garages and pit space as the rest of the community [at the Birkett],” says Attwood. “Regardless of what service you’re in, we all would operate together with the same camaraderie even though there’s competition between the same services themselves, we’d all pull together and use the resources that we’d only be able to use if we all pooled together. We all help each other in that respect.” n

Rise of eSports
Motor sport’s new
route
one?
The growth of eSports in motor racing has raised eyebrows. Can it be a new entry point for participants? By Robert Ladbrook

oute one into motor sport used to be straightforward. Karting had few rivals. It’s where many aspiring young drivers would traditionally get their first taste of driving on a circuit. And it was usually enough to hook them for life. But times have changed, and now achieving the thrill of driving a racing car can be achieved while sat on your sofa. Or even on the train to work via mobile phone apps. McLaren boss Zak Brown summed things up when he was recently asked about the best way to get started in the sport. He had two potential answers – karting being one – but he chose option B, as many younger drivers now are. “I think eSports is quickly becoming the new grass roots of motor racing,” said Brown. “Historically, it’s always been karting, but that’s very expensive and few people can do it. eSports is now massive and we’re putting the wheel in the hands of kids, boys, girls around the world and it’s very competitive. It won’t be long until teams discover talent through eSports.” ❱❱

Rise of eSports
British GT
“The question is where do we find our next licence holder?”
Much like race car technology has advanced, so have the methods of replicating it in a virtual world. Advancements in home consoles, computers, controllers and simulation rigs have meant that some serious gamers can now accurately replicate professional racing without even leaving the house. Remember those days of being told you were wasting your life playing a game? Well, eSports is proving that there’s now a fair bit more to it. There’s already been a history of gamers successfully converting to real-life racing drivers. Nissan’s GT Academy contest – run in association with the Gran Turismo title – ran from 2008-2016, and proved revolutionary, producing more than 20 drivers – including names such as Jann Mardenborough (GP3 and Japanese Super GT) and Lucas Ordoñez (a Le Mans 24 Hours podium finisher). While GT Academy no longer exists, it proved a point that the correlation between racing in the real and the virtual worlds is strong, and that top eSports players can now be looked at as potential rising talent. McLaren backed the World’s Fastest Gamer contest last year. That was won by former Dutch karting champion Rudy van Buren, who was handed a contract to become the British team’s official simulator driver. Darren Cox was one of the founders of both GT Academy and WFG, and has also launched professional eSports team eSports+Cars. The team currently has 27 pro gamers on its roster. Among them is Briton Brendon Leigh, who
44 42_eSportsRacing RL.indd 3
Darren Cox was a key mover behind GT Academy and World’s Fastest Gamer. He believes eSports has many benefits for realworld motor sport
won the inaugural Formula 1 eSports Series title last year, taking the trophy in a lavish finals event held on the undercard at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Leigh has since taken part in the Race of Champions in Riyadh. Cox says: “I’m actually surprised that eSports hasn’t grown faster or sooner, because I can see the benefit of it. GT Academy was the first proof that gamers genuinely can cut it on the track in reality and perceptions of eSports have changed a lot since then. “I think when categories like F1 get involved, everybody takes notice and it proves a tipping point.” This year F1 took its investment in eSports further, with nine of its teams now fielding virtual counterparts and signing professional players to contracts worth real cash. It’s something that Cox equates to being “Like a kid growing up playing the FIFA games, and then being signed to play for his favourite team. It makes things so real it’s unprecedented.” Series like the World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship and World TCR have also followed suit in creating virtual alternatives. While those players at the top are more likely to concentrate of forging careers purely as professional gamers with income now available via gaming and streaming platforms such as YouTube or Twitch, the growth of motor sports in the eSports world will also have a positive effect further down the ladder. “The key question with eSports is not where do we find
www.msauk.org / Autumn 2018
29/08/2018 16:09
Nissan GT Academy kick-started the real-world careers of many virtual racers
the next world champion driver, it’s where do we find the next licence holder?” adds Cox. “The younger generation now gets engaged in things differently. They don’t stand on the banks at Brands Hatch each weekend watching Minis or whatever race in the rain. Now they pick up a controller and realise they have some skill. Those are the people who could then go and do their ARDS test for fun, and then wind up racing a Citroën C1 at club level. We’ve shown that gaming can be a great entry platform for motor racing, and it can also be a key talent identifier.” Former single-seater racer Rupert Svendsen-Cook has established his own virtual racing team – Veloce eSports – which operates the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 eSports squad. “eSports is refreshing because the competition is so pure,” he says. “In F1 we’re told we’re watching the best drivers in the world, but in truth we’re probably watching 10 of the best and then a bunch who have gotten there through luck, money, politics or other things that aren’t talent-dependent. With eSports everybody has had to earn their slot in competitions by beating thousands and thousands of other players, so you know that you are genuinely watching the 20 best virtual drivers in the world at any given event. “There’s a key difference between simulators and games. Titles like Forza and Project Cars are games, so they’ll always be unrealistic to a point. The feedback drivers get from them is all visual, and a bit of force feedback on a wheel, but because of that all of your senses

get heightened as you’re having to try and second-guess the car’s every movement because you have less inputs of data. In the real world you feel the sensations of a car skipping and moving around, but in eSports you actually have to be more dialled-in and I think that has strong real-world relevance. It’s also a huge educational tool. I was educated on world football by playing FIFA, and eSports can do the same thing for motor sport. It’s an enormous tool for fan engagement.” eSports doesn’t just exist at the higher levels of the sport either. Many British championships now sanction virtual versions of themselves as a way of reaching out to a new audience. The UK’s leading organiser is The Online Racing Association (TORA), which was the first eSports organisation to be recognised by the MSA and currently has just under 7,000 active users. British GT, Porsche Carrera Cup, Ginetta GT4 Supercup and LMP3 Cup are all among TORA’s current offering of virtual championships available through the Forza or Project Cars games. British GT was one of the first to be founded, and organisers of the real-world championship have reported a genuine hike in its fanbase because of it. Matt Hunter co-founded TORA back in 2007. He says: “We’ve definitely seen things go more mainstream in recent years. Series and organisers are now coming to us wanting to get involved and spread their message to our community. I also think the advent of proper regulation ❱❱

“You’d be a fool if you were a young driver not using simulation...”
of eSports has helped to move things forward. Games five years ago didn’t have many real-world boundaries, and we wanted a faithful representation of the sport we love, so we enforced our own track limits and driving standards. Now developers are bringing in the same levels of track limits that the MSA uses. That level of reality makes things relevant. [BTCC champion] Ash Sutton was one of our original members when we first set up, and he raced virtually as often as he could to stay sharp. “Gaming can definitely attract the next generation of motor sport fans, who will hopefully one day translate into licence holders, and I think the sport’s embracing of eSports makes that all the more likely. Sure, virtual racing will never truly replicate the physicality and fear factor of real racing, that’s a non-argument, but what it does do is help to destroy the elitist air the sport has. Anybody with a console or a PC can now try it and that’s great for the sport as it begins to future-proof it. From a certain standpoint, motor sport cannot continue how it is forever, be it the money involved, or the fuel – it’s all a finite resource, but enthusiasm isn’t a finite resource. eSports can help get more people enthused about the sport and keep them coming back, and hopefully getting involved themselves.” Perhaps the biggest name in the home-racing simulation is the American-based iRacing. The developers are celebrating iRacing’s 10th anniversary this year, and its virtual options include everything from single-seaters and GTs through to NASCAR, shale ovals and rallycross.
46 42_eSportsRacing RL.indd 5
“For years, we’ve provided a pathway into real-world motor sports,” says iRacing’s Kevin Bobbitt. “For some maybe they try iRacing, get hooked and get started. Then there’s been real, concrete paths that began in iRacing. “I don’t think you will find any up-and-coming drivers who haven’t used simulation – and most use iRacing. We are inexpensive compared to real track time and I’d be so bold as to say that you’d be a fool if you are not using a sim when you are learning the sport. The younger generation of racers have grown up online, so there is no real barrier anymore – when we first launched we’d get lots of real drivers saying: ‘these games aren’t really for me’ – we don’t get that at all anymore, and now even veteran racers are using iRacing to get more seat time. eSports is not just for fun anymore, it is real racing. Racecraft, learning the tracks and lines, repetition and muscle memory – they are all things you can work on when racing virtually. “Max Verstappen made a daring pass at Blanchimont at Spa in 2015 that he first tried through iRacing, and he made it stick, and then used the same move in a grand prix. It doesn’t get much more real than that.” Karting, track days and grassroots club events will continue to play crucial roles in getting new people started in motor sport. But eSports has presented an alternative avenue for spreading the message wider than ever; it could be the big, untapped recruitment ground for the next generation of competitors and volunteers, and perhaps even a discipline in its own right. n

he remarkable VW Beetle rally car of Bob Beales has been in active service for 58 years and the Hereford driver has owned and rallied it for the past 52. Prepared to Oettinger GT specification in order to qualify for FIA historic papers, the 1958 car is one of the oldest currently active in historic special stage rallying and in early October it will be back on the gravel stages on the national section of Dayinsure Wales Rally GB. Beales can trace his sporting roots back to family holidays on the Welsh coast. “My father was registered blind so lived his motor sport through me. I used to drive the family car on the beach as a kid, setting up autotest courses and getting my parents to time me,” he says. Beales will reach 70 in January, so this is very much rallying on a pension. He has been competing pretty much ever since he passed his driving test aged 17 and had his first rally in a Standard 10. “The Beetle is 60 years old and has been active in competition for all but two of those,” says Beales. It was originally used by local rallying hero Bill Bengry, who was a family friend and used it as a spare car during his successful rallying programme in 1960 and 1961. The teenaged Beales used his own Beetle road car in the mid 1960s before his dad decided he needed a separate car for motor sport. Bengry suggested the Beetle, which by then was lying unused. That was in 1966 and Bob has had ‘UWP 401’ ever since, with it standing idle only for a few years in the 1970s when a young family forced a sabbatical. In 1982, Beales went to watch the Lombard Golden 50 Rally. His desire to compete was reignited and the Beetle was retrieved from storage and re-prepared for rallying. For a decade and more Bob and the Beetle were regular contenders. He won the Welsh historic in the early 1990s but, in the face of ever-rising entry fees, now concentrates mostly on demonstration events. This spring, he took the Beetle to Spain for the high-profile Rally Trasmeira. Dayinsure Wales Rally GB has been the exception, and he first tackled the national event in 2015, when a stub axle broke. “Doing WRGB again is a big deal,” he says. n

Prescott Speed Hill Climb One of British motor sport’s true originals
T
hread your way beyond Cheltenham’s Regency elegance, head up past one of the UK’s most celebrated racecourses, traverse the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway and continue towards Evesham. After a few miles, a small sign invites travellers to bear right towards Gotherington – the closest village to one of Britain’s oldest operational motor sport venues. Run since day one by the Bugatti Owners’ Club, Prescott celebrated its 80th anniversary earlier this year – and it has changed relatively little with time’s passage. Sprigs of Armco have been installed here and there,
and there are a few sprinklings of gravel, but archive photographs reveal that its original character endures. The BOC ran speed events at a variety of locations in the early 1930s, before setting out to establish a permanent venue all its own. In collaboration with members of the Vintage Sports-Car Club, BOC officials pinpointed Prescott House and its surrounding land as a perfect location. The BOC acquired the site in 1937 and hosted its maiden event (for club members only) on April 10 1938. The original course measured 880 yards, but an additional loop – incorporating Ettore’s, a tricky right-hand hairpin – was introduced
Prescott has changed little since it opened as a motor sport venue 80 years ago

in 1960 and extended the climb by 247 yards. Today almost all Prescott events take place on the longer hill, although the VSCC – which staged its first meeting here in August ’38 – continues to use both. As locations go, Prescott is one of the planet’s most photogenic. Visitors can begin their day on the clubhouse terrace, taking a hearty breakfast while watching drivers commence their first practice runs of the morning. The course rises more than 200 feet, but the stroll towards the top is not too challenging and the view from the summit is magnificent, offering spectators a close-up of Semi-Circle, an awkwardly cambered right-hander, with a significant chunk of the Cotswolds as a backdrop. From time to time, the distinctive vapour of a passing steam train can be seen in the valley below. Oh, and did we mention that the paddock is set in an orchard? Motor sport and the natural world are rarely so seamlessly integrated. n

From professional kit to eSports essentials DURA RACE PERFORMANCE RPS SIMULATOR Northamptonshire could lay a strong claim to being the professional motor sport simulation hub of the UK, and the latest entry into this sector of Motor Sport Valley comes from Dura Ltd. Usually known for its modular workshop furniture, Dura has branched out by launching its new RPS – standing for Race Performance Simulator – service at its headquarters in Brackley. The system offers both professional drivers and keen amateurs the chance to book sessions of virtual track time for practice, testing and familiarisation. The sim features a 180-degree 4-metre wraparound screen, single-seaterstyle chassis and force-feedback steering. Drivers can choose from 130 circuit layouts worldwide, and have scope to alter setups during sessions and run in a variety of different weather conditions. Each session will be monitored by live data, which can be replayed and analysed in real time or saved as a record of performance, benchmarking for repeat visits. Dura also offers to provide tuition with professional drivers as an added extra. Alternatively, the system can also be rented for group or corporate events. £POA. www.duraperformance.com
SYMDECK MOTION DECK If you’ve been caught up in eSports fever and fancy upgrading your home simulation rig, Symdeck has developed its console-compatible RS Decks. The system is designed to be a scaled-down version of professional race sims. While those larger rigs tend to use three degrees of freedom, Symdeck’s design instead focuses on one – surge. The company’s GCR1000 deck has been designed as a plug & play addition to your Xbox One, PS4 or PC and interacts with the brake and accelerator pedals, moving the user forwards and backwards to simulate acceleration and braking. Fans also replicate the feeling of wind flow at speed and auto-tensioning harnesses tighten and relax with the movement of the deck. It can also replicate saloon or single-seater driving positions. Symdeck’s system can be bought as just the base alone, so existing simulation cockpits can be fitted on top, or as a complete setup with a cockpit fitted. There are choices for two- and three-pedal boxes, as well as options for manual or sequential shifts. Most come equipped with Thrustmaster equipment, a built-in 32’ HD 1080p curved monitor, compact 30W soundbar and bass shaker. The company has opened a showroom in Staffordshire for test drives. £1380 (base only), £3810-4194 (full system). www.symdeck.com

National Court
Motor Sports Council National Court SITTING TUESDAY, 31ST JULY 2018 David Munro, Chris Mount, Richard Norbury Case No: 2018/8 This matter comes before us as an appeal against the decision of the Stewards of the Meeting at Snetterton on 27th May 2018. It has been alleged that the appellant’s car had been in contact with another competitor’s vehicle during a British GT Championship Race on 27th May 2018. The Clerk of the Course had considered the evidence in relation to this incident and had imposed a penalty for a breach of General Regulation C1.1.5 driving in a manner incompatible with general safety. This was expressed as being
under GR G5.3.5 and was stated to be “…the addition of 30 seconds to your race time in lieu of a drive through penalty.” In addition 3 penalty points were imposed on Flick Haigh’s competition licence, under GR C 2.1.7 / G5.3.9. This decision was appealed to the Stewards of the Meeting who did not hear oral evidence or review video evidence and dealt with the matter on the basis of written documentation only. They concluded that the “appeal cannot be accepted as penalty is not subject to appeal under regulation C2.1.6. Penalty points shown on CoC decision of 14.25hrs are annulled” They did not consider any evidence in relation to the ontrack incident in question, and were concerned only with the
provisions of GR C.2.1.6. The appellants then sought leave to appeal to the National Court. Leave was subsequently granted under GR C7.1.3(a) and (b). Decision: During the course of submissions by the parties the Respondents concluded that the appeal could not be resisted in so far that the Stewards had failed to interpret GR C2.1.6 correctly and had failed to draw a distinction between “penalties” and the underlying breach for which those penalties might be imposed. GR C2.1.6 has subsequently been amended, but at the time of the Stewards decision, prohibited any appeal against a time penalty or drive through penalty. The Stewards therefore fell into error in declining to hear
an appeal against the Clerks decision that a breach of GR C1.1.5 has occurred. The National Court therefore allows the appeal against the decision of the Stewards to refuse to hear this appeal. The appeal fees are to be returned to the Appellants. The National Court is asked by the Appellant to quash the decision of the Clerk of the Course on the basis that the judicial process was fatally flawed. The Respondent seeks to ask the National Court to refer the matter back to the Stewards with a direction that they should now hear the appeal. The National Court is sitting as an appellate tribunal and as such is not persuaded that it has the jurisdiction to make the direction sought by the Respondents or to grant the relief sought by the Appellants. Both parties are reminded of the provisions of GR C.9. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN
SITTING TUESDAY, 31ST JULY 2018 David Munro, Chris Mount, Richard Norbury Case No: 2018/11 The National Court has considered an Eligibility Appeal by Luke Browning and Richardson Racing, following the exclusion of car number 11 from a Ginetta Junior race at Oulton Park on the 10th June 2018. The appeal was against a finding of non – compliance and the consequent penalty of disqualification from the race results. Car number 11 was one of a number of vehicles which were subject to post race scrutineering. ❱❱

National Court
On examination the car was found not to comply with Championship Regulations CR 5.1.14 and Ginetta Cars Bulletin 2. Championship Regulation CR 5.1.14 requires the use of lubricants specified and supplied by Ginetta in the specified amount. Bulletin 2 requires that each component must be able to produce a minimum sample of lubricants. In the case of the differential this is to be 0.5 litres. Whilst the car was in parc feme the differential oil level was checked. It proved to be difficult to extract a sample and ultimately no more than 0.2 litres could be obtained. The appellants assert that oil must have been lost during the course of the race and maintain that this was due to the mechanical failure of a component. The Panel have not been provided with any cogent evidence that this is, in fact, the case. It is noted that the team declined to act on the suggestion that the components in question should be examined by Ginetta. The Panel has considered the video evidence submitted which does not support the contention that oil was lost during the competition. The Scrutineer did not find any evidence of fresh oil when the vehicle was examined in parc feme. The Panel concludes that car number 11 contravened CR 5.1.14 and as a consequence this appeal must fail. It is not considered that exceptional circumstances are present in this case and it follows that the disqualification from the results of the race is upheld. The appeal fee is forfeit and the appellants are ordered to pay costs in the sum of £500.00. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN
58 59_National Court RL EDIT.indd 2
SITTING TUESDAY, 31ST JULY 2018 David Munro, Chris Mount, Richard Norbury Case No: 2018/14 The National Court has considered the Eligibility Appeal of a minor, who was a competitor in the Junior X30 class at Lakeland Stadium, Rowrah on 17th June 2018. His kart was subject to post race scrutineering. The Technical Commissioner, Mr Paul Klaassen, examined the kart and found there to be contamination on the clutch running surface. This led him to conclude that the kart was ineligible to race by virtue of a breach of regulation C5.8 of the Kart Race Yearbook. The clutch assembly was removed from the kart and was sealed. It has been inspected by the Panel as forming an essential component in this appeal. The appellant asserts that the clutch surface had become contaminated during the race itself which was run in wet conditions and maintains that the contamination is the result of the ingress of chain lubricant and track debris which would inevitably be worse in such conditions. The presence of contaminations is not disputed. The essential feature of the appellant’s very lengthy submissions is, in essence, that the combination of the design of the clutch drum together with the prevailing weather conditions meant that contamination was almost inevitable and as such GR C.3.1.1 should apply in that it could be said that there should be no disqualification in such circumstances. It is common ground that the design of the clutch cover had, prior to the incident been
modified to improve enclosure. The modification under variant homologation was approved from 1st January 2015. It follows that it was open to all competitors to use the modified design if they chose to do so. The Panel can see nothing that would suggest that there were exceptional circumstances that should have been considered when making the decision to disqualify the competitor. This appeal must fail. There is clear evidence of contamination. The appeal fee is forfeit and the appellants are ordered to pay costs in the sum of £1000.00. The National Court is concerned that much time and effort seems to have been devoted by the parties to this appeal in detailing in matters that were at best peripheral and at worst simply irrelevant. It is incumbent on those making submissions to the National Court to avoid falling into this trap. It does not assist the National Court in reaching a decision when time has to be expended considering superfluous material both before and during hearings. Matters were scarcely improved in the present case by the derogatory language used by the parties in the course of their submissions. Offensive suggestions about the character of advocates and witnesses will do nothing to further the interests of the parties and the practice is to be deplored. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN
SITTING TUESDAY, 31ST JULY 2018 David Munro, Chris Mount, Richard Norbury Case No: 2018/20 The National Court has
considered this matter as a General Regulation C.9 Inquiry and has determined that a defect or default has occurred in that:1. A 5 second penalty was issued to driver Kevin Straw in race 1 of a 750 Motor Club meeting held at Brands Hatch on 21st April 2018. This penalty was imposed for exceeding track limits. The Clerk’s decision incorrectly notes that this was a breach of GR C1.1.5, which would have incurred penalty points. 2. The decision should have been expressed to be made under GR Q14.4.2 which does not incur penalty points. The National Court therefore orders the amendment of the Clerk’s decision so as to ensure that the penalty points are removed from Mr Straw’s licence. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN
SITTING TUESDAY, 31ST JULY 2018 David Munro, Chris Mount, Richard Norbury Case No: 2018/21 The National Court has held an Inquiry under General Regulation C9 in relation to an incorrect declaration of results published by the West of Scotland Kart Club at a meeting held at Larkhall on 13th May 2018. A 10 second time penalty was issued by the Stewards of the Meeting to a competitor in race 23, this being the TKM Extreme Final 1. This was incorrectly recorded in the results as being imposed on competitor number 23. The National Court therefore orders that the results of race 23 should be amended to show that the penalty was imposed on the correct competitor. The correct results should be published without delay. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN

The Manx Classic offers some stunning scenery and three varied hillclimb challenges
Manx Motor Racing Club There’s more to motor sport on the Isle of Man than just the TT...
F
ounded in 1987, the Manx Motor Club organises closed-roads events for vintage, classic and modern sports cars in the Isle of Man, and each spring its flagship event – the Manx Classic – proves a big draw to the island. It’s a unique event in British motor sport, three hillclimbs in three days on three different sections of closed public road. The Isle of Man has a proud heritage of motor sport on closed public roads, dating back more than 100 years. Away from the high-profile TT motorcycle races and the popular Rally Isle of Man, the Manx Classic offers speed event competitors a chance to compete on three challenging hills, two of which use sections from the world-famous TT course. The Classic first ran in 1989 and is an event that depends on visiting competitors from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as entries secretary Bill Welden explains: “We want people to come over to the island. The entry is

usually split between about 30 from the island and around 60 additional competitors from the mainland.” The action starts at The Sloc on Thursday, a fast and flowing mile-long climb to the south west of the island on a newly resurfaced road. On Friday, the action moves to Creg Willey (1.4 miles), a section of the TT course north of Peel, before Saturday’s jewel in the crown: the Lhergy Frissell climb out of Ramsey taking in TT landmarks at the Ramsey Hairpin and the Gooseneck. At 1.5 miles, Lhergy Frissell is the UK’s longest hillclimb course. Each day features two practice runs in the morning and at least two timed runs in the afternoon and most competitors tackle all three hills. For a mainland team, that means travelling out on Wednesday and back on Sunday. “We encourage the older cars but we do have classes for modern cars as well,” says Welden. Single-seaters up to 1969 are permitted, and cars tackle the hills in two batches from a paddock area at the bottom of each hill. n
